Transcript
- 0:11Hi, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon.
- 0:14On a Tuesdays, the Iowa Sports Radio Network back to talk Iowa
- 0:19sports with you for the next, well six hours.
- 0:22We're going to start things off. Miller and Condon go to from
- 0:25noon until 2 and then off the bench coming up from 2 until 5,
- 0:29overtime Iowa 5 until 6. Coming up on our program today
- 0:33along with Trent Condon, Ken Miller here.
- 0:36We will at the bottom of the hour thereabouts, depending on
- 0:39how long it went. Matt Campbell just got off the
- 0:41stage, the mainstage as he spoke to the media and Frisco at Big
- 0:4512 Media Days. So we will hear that 12,
- 0:49whatever it is, minutes of Matt Campbell answering a variety of
- 0:52questions from the national media that was there.
- 0:55There was one local question, but national media had an
- 0:59opportunity to talk to Matt Campbell.
- 1:01We'll hear that at the bottom of the hour.
- 1:03David Icolt will kick off hour number two.
- 1:05He covers the Hawkeyes for 24/7 sports.
- 1:09We'll take a look at the Hawkeyes football.
- 1:11I believe that the Iowa media was invited to Iowa women's
- 1:17basketball practice today, so we'll get a recap on what he saw
- 1:20there. Pick his brain.
- 1:22Obviously a newcomer to the men's basketball roster as well.
- 1:25So a lot of ground to cover with I Colt when he joins us and then
- 1:28Bill Bender on Big 12 Media Days, but just more than I would
- 1:32state the conference overall what he has heard so far.
- 1:35He'll join us at 1:30 with a recap of that Trent's plays of
- 1:38the day, Circus sports sponsor, those those coming to us at
- 1:42about 1:50 or thereabouts. And then we'll turn things over
- 1:46to Sean and Lucas as they come off the bench from 2:00 until
- 1:495:00. How are you this morning and,
- 1:51well, this afternoon? Yeah, this afternoon doing well
- 1:54off and running again for another day, Big 12 Media Days.
- 1:57Good to see Matt Campbell up out there and the new script helmet,
- 2:01which is a big upgrade. Do you like it?
- 2:03I absolutely love it. I I'm getting old now.
- 2:07I used to proclaim myself the uniforms are of the state of
- 2:10Iowa. Now as a made in my mid 40s,
- 2:14it's a little bit more difficult to pull off because it's not
- 2:16about us old guys. It's about the kids and.
- 2:18That's why I don't care. And I'm, I'm trending more and
- 2:21more of that direction as I get deeper and deeper into life.
- 2:24But I love them. I, I think they're beautiful.
- 2:26A little bit of throwback. I just like script uniforms in
- 2:28general. There's something about that
- 2:30script and it probably brings me back to the time when I was
- 2:32growing up when script uniforms, the 80s, certainly the early mid
- 2:3580s were a real big thing. And those throwbacks, now with
- 2:38the new flair, they look good. Jeff FOMO at all today.
- 2:42I kind of do fear of missing out just because we were there last
- 2:45year in Las Vegas for Big 12 Media Days and it just seems
- 2:48like, man, I kind of wish that we were there for this and but
- 2:53we're going to Vegas for Big 10 Media Days.
- 2:55But it's always fun to just kind of, you know, it's a box to
- 2:58check, right? You inch your way a little
- 3:00closer to college football, listening to the coaches and
- 3:03some of the players and Brett, your mark, the commissioner of
- 3:06the conference who is going to dig in his heels apparently,
- 3:09when he wants this model to be 511 when it comes to the
- 3:12playoffs. He thinks that in the long run,
- 3:14that is going to benefit the Big 12.
- 3:16He doesn't want the, you know, the 2 automatic bids.
- 3:18And then, you know, you'll hope and pray you get one of those
- 3:21that are left come your way. But he wants 5:00 and 11:00.
- 3:24So we'll see if he gets his wish.
- 3:26But after all, not sure he has vote.
- 3:29It's going to be the SEC and the Big 10 that are going to
- 3:32determine that they'll listen to everything and they'll do what's
- 3:35best for themselves and everybody will have to come
- 3:37along. Now I understand my view is a
- 3:39little tainted because yes, I am a Hawkeye fan.
- 3:41However, I do like the model that Tony Petiti laid out
- 3:47because it adds depth for everybody.
- 3:50Look, is Mississippi State going to finish in the top two of the
- 3:53SEC any year? But can they finish in the top
- 3:57six? Can they have a special for them
- 3:59nine and three-year in this new behemoth of a conference and
- 4:05have a chance to get into the playoff?
- 4:07You'll have an opportunity. Those are the programs and of
- 4:10course you're locally, yes, Iowa, that opportunity.
- 4:12How often in an 18 team Big 10 are they getting to the
- 4:15championship game place that they've been three times?
- 4:18Not very often. When it was yeah, leaders and
- 4:21legends and. Once every quarter century,
- 4:23yeah, probably 2 decades. I mean, that's realistically
- 4:26what you're looking at in this league, however.
- 4:28Not just for I would put Northwestern in there, put soda,
- 4:31put, you know, like schools. Per view.
- 4:33Yeah, on and on and on. But now you get this carrot that
- 4:37is a reasonable expectation. You have a special season, you
- 4:42go nine and three, you get a chance to play yourself in to
- 4:44the big bracket. I like that part of it, but I
- 4:47also understand my view is tainted.
- 4:49The other part though, that I continue to just be so surprised
- 4:53by is the pushback from the Big 12.
- 4:57We know the SEC is going to get a ton of teams in every year.
- 5:01A16 team bracket, they're going to get 567 teams in the five and
- 5:0611 model, but with the model where you're guaranteeing
- 5:08yourself 2 bids every single year at minimum, and it's not
- 5:11only two bids, you can earn more.
- 5:13Absolutely can. The push back, I understand
- 5:16where it comes from because you're elevating the SEC in the
- 5:19Big 10 to a level, but that's where they're already there.
- 5:22They are financially right to guarantee yourself for the ACC
- 5:25and the Big 12. Those two bids, I still see it a
- 5:29short. Side I'm with you, I'm with you.
- 5:30But no, ultimately they can have their wish, but ultimately it's
- 5:35not going to be up to them, right?
- 5:36It's going to be up to the the two power of conference, the two
- 5:41power, the two most powerful conferences.
- 5:43And when you think about it in the SEC, and I mentioned
- 5:46Mississippi State, Old Miss has never been in an SEC
- 5:48championship game. Which is surprising.
- 5:50To me it is Vanderbilt and on and on.
- 5:52Those middle Orc, Arkansas, who was in one of the first SEC
- 5:55championship games in the late 90s and these programs, why
- 5:59isn't the pushback coming from there?
- 6:00And we mentioned the Big 10. I mean, you go through
- 6:02Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana
- 6:05outside last year and we can keep going on that list.
- 6:08Nebraska on the list. Washington, we keep pushing down
- 6:12that. That's a ton of schools.
- 6:14Is it just because they don't have the power?
- 6:16Is it the old Big 12 where Texas runs things?
- 6:19Is it in the Big 10, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan are running
- 6:22things and everybody else just fall in line?
- 6:24Is it as simple as that? Because you would think there's
- 6:26strength in numbers, right? And if you got over half your
- 6:29school saying whoa, whoa, whoa, we want this, that push becomes
- 6:33stronger. And the same thing of the SEC.
- 6:35Arkansas is just going to sit back and hope maybe we'll attend
- 6:37the two one year Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, these kind of
- 6:41programs. I I'm surprised that we're not
- 6:43hearing more from that next tier team trying to push for that
- 6:47kind of model too. And maybe that's happening
- 6:49behind the scenes. Maybe I was just about to say
- 6:51something similar. Just, you know, pipe down.
- 6:53Well, well, we'll see where it goes.
- 6:55No decision yet. It's coming at some point before
- 6:58December. Yeah.
- 7:00But anyway, so. So, Campbell, again, we're going
- 7:02to hear from. I don't want to spoil it.
- 7:04I listened to it. It was.
- 7:06There was nothing out of the norm, but some some decent
- 7:08answers that I think Cyclone fans will be happy to hear their
- 7:11head coach is addressing. I thought there was some decent
- 7:14questions out there. But when it comes to Iowa State,
- 7:17Trent, I'm just trying to wrap my mind around what this season
- 7:21will look like. And but one more thing on your
- 7:24back before we go there. It is.
- 7:26It it become very apparent after today.
- 7:28The reason that the Big 12 media poll went away.
- 7:30He thought that that Arizona State was punished, penalized
- 7:35last year. What am I missing?
- 7:36They were a playoff team, right, right.
- 7:38They got one of the four. What did they did?
- 7:41They want to be seated higher. If the Big 12 media would have
- 7:44picked them fifth, would that have somehow benefited them?
- 7:47How am how am I missing a preseason media poll who means
- 7:50nothing, right? Nothing.
- 7:53It helps media people. It gives them something to write
- 7:56about, in our case, something to talk about and your marks
- 7:59holding that it's not that big of a deal.
- 8:01You know, to, to 98% of the people listening, but it's just
- 8:06a, it's a talk waking point, if nothing else, a place to start.
- 8:10And how did that hurt Arizona State?
- 8:12Please help me out. I don't even know if it's even
- 8:15Arizona State. I think it's just the Big 12 in
- 8:18general. BYU, another program that came
- 8:20out of nowhere. You remember where they finished
- 8:21in the final College Football Playoff rankings.
- 8:24They're down at 17. Right on the outside, just on
- 8:26the outside looking in. And that was in the 12 team era
- 8:28of a 12 team era. Arizona State was actually
- 8:31ranked 12th though they got the four seed, they were the 12th
- 8:34ranked seed. So team.
- 8:35So I think that's kind of the reason for it.
- 8:37It wasn't just your champion who got in.
- 8:39It was also because you have just those negative comment.
- 8:42How many times do we talk about Arizona State pick last
- 8:45throughout the course of the season?
- 8:47And in a way, I'm sure it taints the mind of voting public.
- 8:51Oh, this team was supposed to be terrible and they they won this
- 8:53league or the league maybe isn't very good.
- 8:55So you think that came up in the room with the with the selection
- 8:59committee. You know, let's think back to
- 9:01July, the 1st week of July. Where did the media have, I
- 9:05mean? I think it's a narrative though
- 9:07about this. How good can this team actually
- 9:09be? Maybe.
- 9:11Just they're supposed to watch the games.
- 9:12If they watch the Big 12 championships, yes.
- 9:15I mean, come on. Yes, but that was won and he had
- 9:18two losses in there. You had a season where Arizona
- 9:21State had a great year last year.
- 9:22It's not to diminish what they were, but then you kind of look
- 9:25under the hood. You beat a bad Mississippi State
- 9:27team in the non conference. You struggle by Texas State.
- 9:31I was on the Bobcats in that one.
- 9:33You lose to Texas Tech, you lose to a very average Cincinnati
- 9:36team, and you look under the hood.
- 9:38The wins at the end of the year were great.
- 9:40BYU, the K State game, of course, Iowa State, the
- 9:42championship game. But maybe.
- 9:44That maybe there was a lot of parity in the league last year,
- 9:47but it wasn't upper echelon parity.
- 9:49Maybe this was a group of not mediocre, whatever the next step
- 9:53between mediocre and really good would be.
- 9:57You know, maybe that's what we saw last.
- 9:58Year. I think it's just more of that
- 10:00innate kind of feeling that you have when you hear a team, boy,
- 10:03they were picked last and that they win the conference and it
- 10:06leads, I think, for a lot of people to just take a look at
- 10:10the whole league and say, well, it must not be very good.
- 10:11No, you know what they should be doing?
- 10:12This should be blaming, should be poor.
- 10:14The bunch of dope sticks cover I with that cover, the Big 12, I
- 10:17mean that they couldn't figure this out as we were.
- 10:19Sitting at the booth at Circa I remember talking to.
- 10:21It's unbelievable, Brett, everybody, national media.
- 10:24Brett Mcmurphy, Colin Wilson. Who else?
- 10:27Tim. Tim from.
- 10:29From visa, yeah. What's his last name?
- 10:30Tim Murray. Tim Murray, all those guys.
- 10:33Well, there's one thing that's easy.
- 10:34Arizona State 16 figured out from there, but that's the easy.
- 10:38One, that's the free square. Colin was showing me his
- 10:40spreadsheet and going through it and yeah, just the negative, the
- 10:44red marks on everything. Arizona State, it was
- 10:46incredible. And then you didn't like the
- 10:48running back, didn't like the quarterback, didn't like the
- 10:50receiver. No saying love it, too young,
- 10:52not ready. Unbelievable.
- 10:56So we'll get back to the Big 12 again, Campbell toward the
- 10:58bottom of the hour, we'll hear his entire address to the media
- 11:03that just took place within the last 20 minutes.
- 11:05So we'll get that relatively fresh.
- 11:07So last night from baseball, anything strike your fancy?
- 11:09You know what? I've done this.
- 11:11I've watched more Kansas City Royals over the last couple of
- 11:13weeks of the last week for sure. They're on the West Coast.
- 11:18It's so much easier, you know what I mean?
- 11:21Because the, the, the central teams that you're watching, in
- 11:24my case, the Cubs are in the Blue Jays or the, you know, the
- 11:29something, the Twins, when I watch the Twins, they're over
- 11:31and done with. And having the Royals on the
- 11:33West Coast, I think I know more about this team at this point
- 11:36maybe than I have all year long. And another win against
- 11:39Pittsburgh. WIT starting to heat up a little
- 11:41bit now there's no path for anything to track down the
- 11:44Titans. No, absolutely not.
- 11:45All about the wild card. And when you look at this Royals
- 11:49team, they're 5 back in the wild card.
- 11:51They still got a jumps. Ahead of them.
- 11:52Three or four. They got three teams in front of
- 11:54it. Well, four if you include the
- 11:56team. You got to get 2 to get there.
- 11:57Which is Mariners at this point are Mariners.
- 11:59Hold it. Yeah, Mariners are two up on the
- 12:01Red Sox. 4 back are the Angels, 4 1/2 the Rangers, and then five
- 12:04for the Royals. Also the Twins. 5 back.
- 12:07Buyers. Sellers.
- 12:11Is Buxton available? Speaking of buyer sellers in.
- 12:12I don't believe so. He has maintained through all
- 12:15his injuries he wants to go nowhere.
- 12:17He loves fishing. He loves Minneapolis.
- 12:19He's in the right state. Yes, absolutely.
- 12:21He doesn't want to go anywhere. He does have a no trade clause,
- 12:24which would be difficult. Bobby Witt, not a great season
- 12:29for his standards. He's heating up.
- 12:32But a guy like that, that is it at his apex.
- 12:35And as we talked yesterday, Mike Trout came up into our
- 12:38conversation, you have a super duper star that's Bobby Witt
- 12:41junior. He is at that level.
- 12:44Do you ever have A1A year where even you're on the periphery of
- 12:47the playoffs that you're selling?
- 12:49Or do you just say, look, we got a generational talent year after
- 12:53year after year, If we can do anything to augment our
- 12:55situation or even just stand pat because we have a player like
- 12:59that, Is that the mindset that you need to take?
- 13:03No, the American leads wide open.
- 13:05Just. Get in.
- 13:06Is it wide open? I think so.
- 13:09The Astros. It seems like it's, you know why
- 13:11I'm drawing a line through Trent and I'm not.
- 13:13Yes. I'm not answering your question
- 13:15about what you would do with Kansas City, but you can you.
- 13:20Yeah, I'm sure you can. I'm not sure the Yankees are
- 13:23going to make the playoffs the way they're going right now.
- 13:26I mean, after Max Freed help me out, there's nothing.
- 13:29There's absolutely nothing. The bullpen is good.
- 13:33Yeah, all right. But the yeah, he's good.
- 13:36The depth of the line up, I mean, radones here.
- 13:39Number two, you don't know what you're gonna get with that guy.
- 13:41No, these are two. You know, you wouldn't play up
- 13:43series with that. Nope.
- 13:44Not that two you have to have two high quality starters at the
- 13:49top of your rotation. I think to be considerably the
- 13:52legitimate team that can make a run in the in the Major League
- 13:55Baseball playoffs and they don't have.
- 13:58I'm with you. I think Rodon's a nice player.
- 14:00I don't think he's that, you know, that guy that you feel
- 14:04comfortable. And I get it.
- 14:05Gerrit Cole got hurt. I mean, Cole Freed would be an
- 14:07entirely different story, but but Cole's not there.
- 14:10I just work. I just don't think this Yankees
- 14:12team is going to even, I want to say in free fall, but man.
- 14:16One guy that is starting to heat up, Jason Dominguez, who we
- 14:19heard about a lot before the season, he's another young guy
- 14:21that is definitely heating up. And you know, he's a young
- 14:24talent. He was a huge prospect coming
- 14:26up. Feels like those Yankee
- 14:27prospects are always elevated a little bit more maybe then they
- 14:30should be in the rankings. But that's a guy that still only
- 14:3322 years old. He's been talked about with his
- 14:36upside and if he continues at the path he has for the last 3-4
- 14:39weeks now, you're talking about him and Judge together and a
- 14:42little bit of depth that line up.
- 14:43They're going to have to mash their way.
- 14:44I mean, it's going to have to be a lot of nine, seven wins, going
- 14:46to have to be a lot of games like that in order to get there.
- 14:49I'm not going to throw dirt on him yet.
- 14:50I'm not going to put a line through them because it's still
- 14:52the 8th. They sure seemed like they were
- 14:54home free a couple of weeks ago. So back to your Bobby Witt
- 14:57question with the Royals. You know what?
- 14:58I wonder what I wonder if you asked this question to Bobby
- 15:01Witt what he would like to do. I would like.
- 15:04I think you got a. I think every baseball player
- 15:06said go all in. Yeah, but I don't think you
- 15:08should. I don't think you should.
- 15:09I I think you got to be realistic about your chances.
- 15:12You're not catching the tigers. So you're hoping for one of
- 15:15three wild cards, right? And there's, there's one, one of
- 15:20the wild cards, at least to me, is going to come out of the east
- 15:24and probably one out of the West.
- 15:25I think so I. Mean the Mariners are good.
- 15:28The Mariners are a good team. They've always had the pitching,
- 15:31you know, Julio Rodriguez. Is he shouldn't be an All Star?
- 15:36Has he disappointed? Yes, he should not be on the All
- 15:38Star. Team what we thought he was
- 15:39going to be two years ago. Yep, I think so.
- 15:42A. Bad year for him.
- 15:44I thought this guy was going to be.
- 15:45Yeah, mega *. Every single year, top five of
- 15:48MVP voting and yes, he's an All Star, but that next year and
- 15:52he's not that he hasn't been that he hasn't been that the
- 15:54last two years. Cal Rally is ridiculous.
- 15:57Oh my. God.
- 15:59Met you a couple of weeks ago with the Twins and and Mariners
- 16:01were playing and my daughter had 32 home runs and yeah, he's only
- 16:05played half the year. It's unbelievable what he is
- 16:08doing. That Mariners team is dangerous
- 16:10because of what? They have depth in that
- 16:12rotation. I like their bullpen.
- 16:14That's a team. And you wonder they haven't had
- 16:16a big winner in a long time. They made the playoffs a couple
- 16:18years ago for the first time in what, 20 years?
- 16:21If that's a team, though, finally, hey, let's push our
- 16:23chips in. Let's go go after this one
- 16:27because yes, the Astros are the Astros.
- 16:29However, the rest of the American League.
- 16:31Are you scared of the Tigers? School's great the team is
- 16:35playing at such a high level, but is that a team even in A5
- 16:38game ALDS series? You say, huh, we can't get over
- 16:41this. Huh.
- 16:41The Tigers? No, but to be fair, who's there
- 16:48to? It's not Flaherty, is it?
- 16:50Probably they. Certainly you've never met a
- 16:55Flaherty. Guy no Griebart Torres has had a
- 16:57phenomenal year. I love Torkelson.
- 16:59Miley Green is the star. Yes.
- 17:02Do they have enough? Mize has been great.
- 17:05He's probably their number two. Then Flaherty, Flaherty's your
- 17:08three. You're in good.
- 17:09Shape. Bullpen outstanding.
- 17:12They do have a lot of pieces and they are I love what Hinch does.
- 17:17Is he manager of the year? Slam dunk?
- 17:18Oh. I think so.
- 17:19Really. Oh yeah.
- 17:21Can I sell you, Joe? A spot of stock?
- 17:24Look at Houston, man. Yeah.
- 17:26That's a good one I think though the Tigers going from out of it
- 17:31August last. Year, but you're gonna have to
- 17:33lay money to bet. AJ Hinge, Oh yes, you would get
- 17:35some plus money I would think on his spot.
- 17:39Does it come down to who gets the number one seed?
- 17:41I think it does. Probably, yeah, I think it
- 17:43probably does. And it's not that big of a what?
- 17:45What is the difference? I mean two and a.
- 17:46Half. See.
- 17:47Yeah, Houston's, they're closing the gap.
- 17:50I didn't realize it was that close either.
- 17:51Wow. So I'm not so sure that you can
- 17:55just go ahead and print Hinch's name on that trophy.
- 17:57All right, real quick, 5 minutes on this.
- 17:59So I was talking to somebody about Survivor yesterday and I
- 18:03want to get make this a Survivor conversation, but where I do
- 18:06want to go and and maybe it maybe we talked about it before
- 18:10when the schedule came out. Have you looked at week one of
- 18:11the NFL? Week 1 of the NFLI have.
- 18:15It's been a while though, probably.
- 18:16I didn't think me too. And just when you reacquaint
- 18:20yourself with week one, just how amazing this week of the
- 18:24schedule is and all of the well, let me do this.
- 18:27We got time, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 18:28OK, 5 is the 5 is oh, Oh my God, what a game.
- 18:32All right. And you can work your way down
- 18:34from them. You can even have half scores if
- 18:36you want. So we we open the we open the
- 18:38season Dallas and Philly. Well, how many stars is that?
- 18:41Is that 4? Yes, absolutely.
- 18:43All right, then we go. Friday night we get another
- 18:45game. Chargers and Kansas City at
- 18:48Chargerville in Brazil, 3 1/2 four four.
- 18:52OK, Tampa, Atlanta Pretty big in in in division rivalry game,
- 18:56right? Incredibly important.
- 18:57Game. How many?
- 18:58Four. Yes.
- 18:58OK, since he at Cleveland 3 1/2 three. 2.
- 19:04OK, Miami Indy Two Yeah. Raiders Patriots 2 One and a
- 19:10half 1 1/2 Arizona at New Orleans Zero.
- 19:14You don't think you don't. You have 0.
- 19:15Zero star game. OK, maybe it's not as good as I
- 19:17thought. Pittsburgh and Aaron Rodgers
- 19:20going back to take on the NYJ New York Jet Jet Jets.
- 19:25Because of narratives, that's a force.
- 19:26Right, because of the storylines, giants and
- 19:29commanders. Two and a.
- 19:31Half I will go 3 Carolina, Jacksonville one.
- 19:36Half, half a star. I think both of these teams
- 19:39arrows pointing up, but I'm going to go 1 Tennessee at
- 19:42Denver. Well, that's a 5 for you.
- 19:44It is. It's the first five we've come
- 19:46across. Trent Cam Ward's first start,
- 19:48Denver. It's a three best at best, maybe
- 19:502 1/2 to be fair, Niners at Seattle.
- 19:53Love this game. You're like 3 1/2.
- 19:56Do you like Seattle this year? I'm in like with him, not in
- 19:59love. Who?
- 20:00Finishes 4th in the West. I got Seattle.
- 20:06Yeah, but they might be 8-9, no? True, true.
- 20:10Here we go, Detroit at Green Bay. 4 1/2.
- 20:14Houston at Ramville. 3 1/2. Sunday night.
- 20:18Football. Ravens Bills, get your tickets
- 20:23early. Huge 5.
- 20:25Yes. And Monday Night Football
- 20:28bringing the curtain down in week #1.
- 20:30This is always a five star for me.
- 20:31Vikings at Bears. A lot of internal disagreement
- 20:36in the Cotton household about this game.
- 20:38No, but, but yeah, I mean, and yes, there is, but this is big.
- 20:42Yes, this is big. I mean, I think even football
- 20:44fans would say at minimum 4 out of five.
- 20:47It's a good kick off to the seat.
- 20:48It's a pretty good seat. It's a pretty good lid lifter,
- 20:50is it not? And when you mention the
- 20:52conversation starting with Circa Survivor, I'm using your Denver
- 20:57Broncos in Week 1. I think you have too.
- 20:59Yeah. You know, there's one, there's
- 21:00one other. That's got my attention.
- 21:03One other that has your. This would be so far down your
- 21:06list of where you think I would go.
- 21:08You'd probably guess eight games before you got to this one.
- 21:11And I'm going to try and convince my partners in our
- 21:15group to take this team and I know I'm going to get outvoted.
- 21:18Cardinals at the Saints. The Saints are going to be
- 21:21terrible. Trent, well done.
- 21:23I thought you'd take a bunch of games.
- 21:24No, no, no. It's the Cardinals.
- 21:25Because that's that's that has a star next to it.
- 21:28On my survivor list already is How often are you going to use
- 21:31the Cardinals? That's just it.
- 21:33The Saints are going to be brutal awful.
- 21:35They are taking for arcs. And they should.
- 21:37Go to grandpa's team. Absolutely.
- 21:39I mean, it makes a ton of sense. Perfect for the league.
- 21:41No doubt this is exactly what you want.
- 21:45Now we want Arch to hold on a couple of years to see his kid
- 21:48right, Because he's. Getting older, yes I I think
- 21:53that is one that bears weak. 1 is just so goofy.
- 21:57Well, here's the thing, Trent, look, go back to last year and
- 21:59everybody that got knocked out with the, quote, free square,
- 22:02right? Everybody's going to be on it.
- 22:04And Cincinnati got beat by the Patriots and then we come back
- 22:07the next week. Oh, this is too easy.
- 22:09The Raiders going to Baltimore to play the Ravens.
- 22:13If you can get one of those huge upsets and you're flying under
- 22:18the radar, maybe I'm not flying under the radar.
- 22:22I thought that the Cardinals Saints game might be one of
- 22:24these games that you can latch onto and just hope for carnage
- 22:28for everybody. Else.
- 22:28Well, even week one last year with the Cardinals going to
- 22:32Buffalo, how many people had Buffalo?
- 22:34That was a close game. And and the Bills had to come
- 22:36back from a pretty big it. Was it was they were down in
- 22:39half time, maybe double digits? Weak ones, goofy and and that's
- 22:44the part I know a lot of people would point to Cincinnati a
- 22:47their September woes are brutal. They're they're just awful.
- 22:50They are, I mean, it's, it's more than just a narrative.
- 22:53It is definitive. Last half decade of Joe Burrow,
- 22:56they've been awful the first couple of weeks of the season,
- 22:58losing 2 teams they have no business losing before injuries
- 23:01hit. You know, those kind of things
- 23:02that just happened in the course of football.
- 23:05And it's a divisional game. I hate divisional games.
- 23:08So you would stay away from the Commander's game for that
- 23:11reason. Same thing.
- 23:12Giants are going to be awful. Washington's a lot of people's
- 23:16girl with the curling that division this year.
- 23:19Am I alone on an island thinking there's going to be a step back
- 23:21from Washington? I don't know if there'll be a
- 23:23step back. I don't know if they're going to
- 23:24be as good as as they were because they were a threat.
- 23:26Last year they. Won't.
- 23:27Let's face it, I mean play for a championship you can't go there
- 23:34with. When you say that, what do you
- 23:36mean no playoffs? Yeah, like an 8-9 type of team,
- 23:39nine and eight outside looking in, that type of so.
- 23:41Regression from Daniels. Maybe a little bit.
- 23:45I mean, sophomore, step back, those kind of things, I mean.
- 23:47It doesn't. It's not going to have Bonex.
- 23:49It's not no, I've I've been told that I've heard that one before.
- 23:53They had so many, I don't want to say low level, but just mid
- 23:57level veteran signings and almost every one of them hit.
- 24:01That doesn't happen often in the NFL.
- 24:03And now those aging veterans, another year we're going to run
- 24:06it back again to have the health that they had.
- 24:09Those kind of I, I love Terry Mclaurin.
- 24:11I I love the receiver crew. I love the offense and it's so
- 24:13fun to watch Daniels just the way that he is so precise and
- 24:17executing and then he's going to tuck it and make plays.
- 24:19He's an outstanding player. It's the NFL and we've seen so
- 24:24many times those teams that come out of nowhere just take that
- 24:27step back, and that is my concern more than anything with
- 24:30Washington. Did their season, was there one
- 24:36game in the schedule that was a turning point for both?
- 24:38For for two teams, yeah. One went, one went into the
- 24:42tank. The others arrow started to
- 24:43point up a little. Bears commanders, right?
- 24:45Uh huh. What a different season it was.
- 24:47So maybe that maybe that was, we know what it did for the Bears,
- 24:50maybe that propelled the Commanders is where I'm going.
- 24:52We're going to break. But before we do that, we're
- 24:54going to hear from Matt Campbell on the other side.
- 24:56You Cyclone fan, you football fans want to hear from Iowa
- 24:59State's head coach. We've got him not live, but this
- 25:01was from the Big 10 Media days as he met with the media within
- 25:05the last 45 minutes. But right now, if you're so
- 25:07inclined, you can head to KX and o.com.
- 25:11This nationwide keyword contest. The bonus box continues on.
- 25:15You'll see the pop up box. Type the keyword pay.
- 25:17Pay at KX and o.com. Your chance to win $1000 pay at
- 25:22KX and o.com. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 25:26Tuesday. Matt Campbell from Big 12 media
- 25:28days. Next.
- 25:29It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:34I'm Miller Congan. Welcome back.
- 25:35Iowa Sports Radio Network, up and up an hour.
- 25:38Number two, David I Colt on Iowa and the Big 10.
- 25:41Bill Bender from the Sporting News on college football.
- 25:44We'll take a look back at the Big 12 with everybody's
- 25:47perspective, at least what he's heard so far.
- 25:49You're about to hear from Matt Campbell as he met the media
- 25:52earlier this morning. Players are out there, a lot of
- 25:55buzz. Seems like there's a pretty good
- 25:57group of media that have assembled, haven't been able to,
- 26:00you know, compare the last year to this year as far as numbers
- 26:03that went out to that, but seems like a pretty good group.
- 26:05Yeah, You kind of wonder about the national part of it.
- 26:07I mean there's so many Texas based reporters that are going
- 26:10to be down there, Heartland College sports obviously with
- 26:12our guys down there making, making that be happen a big part
- 26:16of it. But yeah, that'll be kind of the
- 26:18interesting as well. We'll talk to a few of the
- 26:20national media members that we've got to know throughout the
- 26:21years when we're in Vegas and see their perspective, not the
- 26:25local perspective, but the national perspective of what the
- 26:28difference was. Because you thought it was going
- 26:29to be a pretty big impact movement.
- 26:31Yeah. I, I thought that they would be
- 26:33a pretty significant reduction in number of media that make
- 26:37their way down there because. We've been to Big 10 a couple of
- 26:39times in Chicago. Yeah.
- 26:41But Indianapolis didn't move our knee.
- 26:43No, I didn't. It didn't.
- 26:45It's a longer drive. It's just, it's just Chicago,
- 26:48Yeah. I mean, there's two Chicago in
- 26:50the summer and Las Vegas anytime, right?
- 26:53Right, let's hear from Matt Campbell, Iowa State's head
- 26:56football coach, Big 12 Media Days.
- 26:58First and foremost, just an honor to be here today.
- 27:01I, you know, can't believe we're going into our 10th football
- 27:04season here at Iowa State. It's truly an honor to represent
- 27:09Iowa State University, our athletic department, certainly
- 27:11our football program. And you know, from my
- 27:14standpoint, been really rewarding to watch our football
- 27:18program align itself back together in January and really
- 27:23watch the strain of our young men really go to work on
- 27:26continuing to elevate our football program forward.
- 27:30And we brought 5 tremendous young men here today with us.
- 27:34I I'd like to talk a little bit about each one of them.
- 27:36Really quick on on the defensive side of the football, we we
- 27:40brought our senior safety Jeremiah Cooper, a young man
- 27:44that started for four years and our football program has had a
- 27:46tremendous career. I'm really coming off another
- 27:49great year as a junior and it's certainly expecting his best
- 27:52going into senior year. Senior defensive tackle, nose
- 27:56guard, defensive lineman Dominic Orange.
- 27:59You know, we feel like Dominic's got a chance to be one of the
- 28:02best players in the defensive line in the country.
- 28:05We're really proud of what he's done and continue to do in our
- 28:07football program is made unbelievable growth on and off
- 28:10the football field and certainly proud of who he is.
- 28:14And then junior defensive back John Tez Williams coming off 5
- 28:17interception season from a year ago, a young man, one of the
- 28:21hardest workers in our football program, great young leader in
- 28:24our football program. And then on the offensive side
- 28:26of the football, two young men came with us today.
- 28:28Senior, six year offensive lineman, a young man that's had
- 28:32a tremendous career, four year starter the last four years and
- 28:35Tyler Miller has had a tremendous career.
- 28:38You talk about leader of men, one of the great leaders in our
- 28:41football program. And then last but certainly not
- 28:43least is our junior quarterback Rocco Beck.
- 28:46And, and Rocco has evolved into one of the best quarterbacks in
- 28:49college football, a guy that has been just a great leader in our
- 28:53locker room, stands for what's right, and certainly really
- 28:56proud of all he stands for and what he does for a football
- 28:59program. So for me, it's been great to
- 29:02align with our coaches, like I said, are these great young men.
- 29:05We've got 18 great seniors and a real great opportunity for Iowa
- 29:09State football to continue to grow itself forward.
- 29:11So with that said, we'll certainly answer any questions
- 29:13you'd have for us all. Right.
- 29:15We'll open up the questions immediate.
- 29:16Please raise your hand if you have a question.
- 29:18We'll go here. Center left, Barry.
- 29:20Yeah. Barry Trammell, Tulsa World,
- 29:22man, you're talking about Rocco. This is a pretty heavy
- 29:25quarterback league this year. A lot of veterans.
- 29:27Does that just keep you sort of even par?
- 29:30Does that keep you behind the 8 ball?
- 29:32What is what is having a veteran quarterback this particular year
- 29:36do for you? Yeah.
- 29:38You know, and Barry, I probably don't know enough about
- 29:41everybody else in this conference from that
- 29:42perspective. But I do know about Rocco and I
- 29:45know what he's proven, not just last year, but the last two
- 29:49years. I, I'd say in a lot of ways,
- 29:51he's the reason why our football program has clawed back to where
- 29:55we are right now. And, you know, I thought he had
- 29:58an incredible red shirt freshman year, came onto the scene and
- 30:01really had a great year, you know, in, in 23.
- 30:05And then for him to have the maturity and, and honestly, the
- 30:09leadership to do what he did last year was, was really
- 30:12special. I mean, the moments that he was
- 30:14able to play, especially when you look at, you know, late in
- 30:17the game, what he was able to do in some critical moments, the
- 30:19ability, ability to extend plays, make the winning plays
- 30:23really special. And so from our end of it, every
- 30:26time we've had a guy like that, it's given us a chance to to
- 30:29reach our full potential as a football team in a program.
- 30:31And, you know, I think Rocco's leadership is as special as what
- 30:34I've I've seen or been around from a quarterback.
- 30:37So we're really proud of him. And obviously, we've been really
- 30:39fortunate to have some great quarterbacks at Iowa State.
- 30:42We're going to the center left, far back.
- 30:47Good morning, coach. I'm Melissa Cooper with the Fort
- 30:49Worth * Telegram. So the Big 12 has changed the
- 30:53lot. You've seen teams leave the
- 30:55conference. You've seen new.
- 30:57Teams come in, but how does that impact the way that you were
- 31:02Crew players, either from the transfer portal or high school
- 31:06players in terms of illustrating that level of competition that
- 31:11players can expect? Yeah, that's a, that's a unique
- 31:16question for sure, especially in our landscape today.
- 31:18I, I think the, probably the great thing about Iowa State
- 31:21football is we really haven't changed.
- 31:24And, you know, I, I think from our end of it, you know, we've,
- 31:28we've certainly put a priority on recruiting high school
- 31:31student athletes into our football program and developing
- 31:33those young men and keeping those young men in our, in our
- 31:36football program. And over the last 10 years, it's
- 31:39probably been the pillar of our success.
- 31:42Now, also certainly identifying, you know, using other resources
- 31:47to get player acquisition. You know, whether it's been the
- 31:49transfer portal at one time it was graduate transfers.
- 31:54We've always tried to use every resource to build the best team
- 31:57year in and year out to help our team be the best.
- 32:00But I think what we've always tried to do is never flinch from
- 32:04the standards that it takes to play in our program.
- 32:06And it's probably the one nice thing about being at one place
- 32:09now for 10 years is we know who fits.
- 32:12We know what works in our football program.
- 32:14We'd say all the time, our kind of guys, OK G, who fits Iowa
- 32:18State football. And it's really helped us be
- 32:20able to navigate the player acquisition process and and
- 32:23certainly find the right young men for our program.
- 32:27Gentleman standing center left. Hey, Matt Callas Rabinet here
- 32:31with the Kansas City Star. You got a unusual season opener
- 32:36with Kansas State and Ireland. It's early.
- 32:38It's in a different country. What kind of preparations are
- 32:41you asking your kids to do to get ready for that?
- 32:44Yeah, I, you know, certainly a unique challenge.
- 32:47You know, when you look at at the start of the college
- 32:50football season, I, I think you, you look first and foremost and
- 32:54you're very honored to play in this game.
- 32:56And obviously the respect that myself and our kids have for
- 32:59Kansas State and being a rival game and a respect for their
- 33:03program and their players, you know, it just makes it a really
- 33:06unique opportunity. And, and so I think sometimes
- 33:10when it is unique, it really focuses zoom focus.
- 33:13And I, I almost feel like since January, we've had to talk about
- 33:16this, not only, you know, man, what does it mean to play a game
- 33:20like that, that early in the season, but also the travel and
- 33:24what happens post that game. I, I think if you look at the
- 33:27history of this week 0 game, I don't know if anybody's really
- 33:30handled it very well, whether they won or lost the game.
- 33:33I think they've, they've had some tougher moments post that
- 33:37game. And so I think when you look at
- 33:39this, you got to look at it in its entirety and you got to be
- 33:43able to look at what are the challenges.
- 33:45How did you set up your spring calendar?
- 33:47How do you set up your summer calendar?
- 33:49How do you do a great job of making sure practice fits, fall
- 33:53camp fits, you know, the lead up to this unique opportunity in
- 33:56week zero? And then obviously, how are you
- 33:59preparing post this game to get ready to play some hugely
- 34:03impactful football games right as soon as you get back from
- 34:06Ireland? So it's really been a great
- 34:08challenge for the head football coach and for our staff to sit
- 34:11together and and really kind of troubleshoot this from a
- 34:14multitude of different angles. And, you know, we've really
- 34:17tried to look at it as that, but as big of a challenge it is,
- 34:20it's certainly a great opportunity and we certainly
- 34:22feel honored to be able to be a part of it.
- 34:25The center right. High Coach Campbell, Alec Bussey
- 34:2824/7 Sports You talked about this being your 10th year at
- 34:33Iowa State, and you called the Kansas State game a rival
- 34:36opponent. I'm curious how you've maybe
- 34:38seen the Farmageddon rivalry evolve over your last decade in
- 34:43names. Yeah, you know, the evolution of
- 34:47that. I, I just, you have so much
- 34:50respect for the consistency that Kansas State football has had
- 34:54over, you know, 2 great coaches now during my time here in this
- 34:58league to, you know, what that team has stood for.
- 35:02So I think from, from our perspective, we have tried to
- 35:06really make it equated to a rivalry game and to be able to
- 35:10get our football program to have, you know, the similar
- 35:14characteristics that, you know, the consistency of excellence
- 35:17that that program has stood for. So, you know, to me, you've
- 35:20always had great respect for Kansas State from the time that
- 35:23I was at Toledo to obviously the time that I came into this
- 35:27league to where we are today, 10 years later.
- 35:30Go center right in the back. Hi coach David Helman with
- 35:37Devils in detail. You lost your top 2 receivers
- 35:40last year. Jaden Higgins and Jalen Noel
- 35:42both had almost 1200 receiving yards each.
- 35:45What goes into the challenge of replacing two players that were
- 35:48so productive at the same position?
- 35:51Yeah, You know, obviously both of those young men were
- 35:53tremendous players. And, you know, I don't know if
- 35:56you're just going to draw up the the have Higgins and Knoll right
- 36:00back there. But I think what you have to
- 36:02collectively have is, you know, great people around your
- 36:06starting quarterback. And obviously we're really
- 36:08blessed to have a building block in Rocco in that passing game
- 36:12and a guy that knows what it takes to be successful.
- 36:15And I, I think both Jaden and Jalen would say was a huge part
- 36:18of their success. You know, I think you look
- 36:20around the other rooms before you even talked about the wide
- 36:23receiver room, You know, we feel like we have one of the best
- 36:26tight end rooms in the country, you know, with Ben Bramer and
- 36:29Gabe Burkle. And obviously we didn't have Ben
- 36:32last year, which we thought really hurt us to be able to get
- 36:34him back to have Burkle, who came on and was just incredible
- 36:38down the stretch run for us as elite pass catchers, guys that
- 36:41can really, you know, challenge the defense.
- 36:44Then you look at the the offensive backfield and what
- 36:46Hanson and Sama can do both as runners and catchers out of the
- 36:50backfield. And then you talk about that
- 36:52wide receiver room, you know, and, and we're we're fortunate.
- 36:55Yeah, it's a couple freshmen stand up and really play good
- 36:59football for us. Brett Eskelsen won us the
- 37:01Cincinnati game last year late in the season.
- 37:03Had five catches for almost 100 yards in the game.
- 37:06Man, had some big catches for us down the stretch run in the
- 37:09season. Yet Dominic Overby is a freshman
- 37:11that really stepped in and had some really big moments for us.
- 37:15And then you you talk about Daniel Jackson, a six year
- 37:17senior that in 23, the reason we kind of got off the off the mat
- 37:22after that tough Ohio loss was Daniel Jackson LED us to some
- 37:25huge games in 23. And you know, he got injured in
- 37:29fall camp. We didn't have them last year.
- 37:31And to get him back as a veteran is huge.
- 37:33And then you talk about the addition.
- 37:35You know, we were fortunate that you know, we chased Soul, a
- 37:37young man from East Carolina that had a great start to his
- 37:40career. There is now in our program.
- 37:43We really had a great spring ball for us, Xavier Townsend
- 37:46from Central Florida who is tremendous skill football
- 37:49player. So we've got some great pieces.
- 37:52Obviously those pieces are going to have to prove it in our
- 37:54system. But to have some guys that have
- 37:56proven in our system around a great quarterback, we feel
- 37:59really confident about what that has the ability to look like.
- 38:02We'll go center left. Center for JT Wister still
- 38:07locked on youths coach So often you see teams rarely make it
- 38:12back to the Big 12 title game for a second year in a row.
- 38:15What is it about this conference that makes it so challenging to
- 38:18do that And do you just how do you feel your team is ready to
- 38:21try and make it back to that game with a different result?
- 38:25Yeah, You know, I, I just, I think from top to bottom, the,
- 38:28the consistency of this conference, you've got great
- 38:32quarterbacks, you got great coaches right now and you've got
- 38:35a lot of great programs. And so, you know, I, I think
- 38:39again, you got to try to stay healthy.
- 38:42You got to get on a great run and you got to be able to, you
- 38:45know, you got to be able to kind of what I would deem if we're
- 38:47going to get back there this year, you got to be pretty
- 38:49tough, you know, or are we? We've we've changed a lot of
- 38:52things in football, but the one thing you haven't changed is
- 38:55arguing tough enough. And you know, that toughness
- 38:57isn't just physical. Sometimes it's mental too.
- 39:00And you know, we deal with 18 to 22 year olds and are you
- 39:03mentally tough enough to stay the course through the entirety
- 39:05of a football season? And I think that's a real
- 39:07challenge. So, you know, I think it is
- 39:10really unique for Iowa State football this year and we're
- 39:12going to figure out if we're tough enough to be able to to do
- 39:15it again. All right, Matt Campbell as he
- 39:21met the media Big 12 Media Days. We'll take time out, come back,
- 39:25react to that in our final couple of minutes, our #1 Miller
- 39:28and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 39:32All right, finally, a few seconds literally of our number
- 39:35one, you heard from Matt Campbell.
- 39:36Anything stick out to you? Love the K State rivalry.
- 39:39Continue to build that up. Yep, and.
- 39:41Don't get it every year though, no.
- 39:44Protect it. I would like to see it, I
- 39:46really. Would I would like to see it.
- 39:48You know what? I keep coming back.
- 39:50Higgins and Knoll. Yeah, it's a lot of receptions,
- 39:53man. You could count on those dudes.
- 39:55We'll see. Maybe Townsend and Seoul are a
- 39:58reasonable facsimile, but that that would be, at best, brought
- 40:01them both up. Yeah.
- 40:04Hour 2 coming up, David Eichold kicks it off.
- 40:06Bill Bendermore, college football.
- 40:08We'll focus on the Big 12 with Bill when he joins us at 1:30.
- 40:12Trends, plays of the day. Still to come Miller and Condon.
- 40:16We are on the Iowa Sports Radio Network flagship at KXNO.
