- 0:00SPEAKER_02: In this episode, the Foundation has left the house.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: The captain has left the ship.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: The hockey team has lost its coach.
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: Brendan and I are on our own trying to record an episode all from scratch.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: Enjoy.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: So you talk me through your weekend fixture.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: To be honest, I don't really want to talk about the weekend yet, because I'm very annoyed with Phil's amateurism and his lack of commitment.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: You know, I feel like it's been you and me who like like put the podcast on our shoulders, who are always here, always on time, are dedicated.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Phil just does fuck all, does nothing, and now he doesn't even care to show up.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: So I'm quite annoyed.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: But my weekend, my weekend was pretty good.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: I was uh ill for most of it, but still played, battled through it, uh won against Pino K, and we're still uh in it to reach playoffs.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: So I'm actually quite okay.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: How was it with uh Bowen FC uh and HC?
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: How'd you guys go?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, pretty tough weekend.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Uh a loss away at Cardiff, so we drove three and a half hours for a 6 p.m.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: game, drive back three and a half hours, get home at 1 a.m.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: with a loss.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for me, that's not a fun Saturday.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Um wasn't the best performance.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Um, do you know what's really nice, Yupe, and it sounds really weird.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Before, when they're like this, so our league splits right at Christmas.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: You go top six, bottom six.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Before, because I was in the top six and never traveled far, so it was never bad.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Now I'm in the bottom six.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Our closest game is an hour and a half, and our furthest game is something like four and a half hours.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: So I'm now like firsthand seeing how shit this league actually can be from a travel point of view.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: So get this right.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: We have a double header weekend where we play, we travel four and a half hours to play at 4 p.m.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: on a Saturday to drive back four and a half hours to then play a home game on the Sunday.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Like, that's ridiculous.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: To be fair, if I was setting up the league, I would not give a shit about the bottom six teams somehow they had to travel and shit.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: So, like, I can I'm I'm willing to say that that that that's not ideal to travel four hours back and forth, half hours, back and forth, and then play another game on Sunday.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: But they also gotta say, I get it.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: I get that they want to make lives of the bottom six teams even more miserable than miserable than they already are.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Philip, how was your weekend?
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: What did you do?
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, he's not fucking here.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Now it also becomes very, very clear and very uh it shows how much Phil actually does, and like because we don't have a clue what to talk about right now.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: I do, and I do have a genuine question.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Uh, and it happened last week in the game between Pinnacle and Amsterdam.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Domerhausen hitting Van Orbel in the face.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Oh what actually happened after that?
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Because I thought Domerhausen carried on playing, whereas on video I reckon that's a red card.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, I've I I actually spoke to Phil this week and we had kind of the same discussion.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: I think if it was anyone else but Luc Domershuizen, who is one of the nicest guys out there, I think you would think it's foul play, but I genuinely believe because it's like it's between two of the nicest guys in the hoofklasse, Van Albou and Domershuizen.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: So they won't, they were not in a fight, I'm sure they were not uh uh giving each other shit.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: They were not like there's no bad blood between the two.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: So I'm I'm sure it's accidental, however, I think Amit got a red card for less in the European or in the uh Olympic quarter final.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it did look very bad, but I gotta vouch for Luke Domusauser here.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm a thousand percent convinced there is no foul play, it's just he he it's a very unlucky and stupid movement with the stick, which which is like dangerous if that makes sense, but it there is no foul play there.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would because I watched it back and I like slow-mo doesn't help the situation, but it looks pretty bad.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Like, and I don't know the guy, I only know Van Orbal, and I'm protective of Van Orbal because he is single-handedly the nicest bloke, and it turns out there's two of them.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: So I think it was one of those where you're like, didn't look great, probably didn't mean it, but it really didn't look great this one.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: It looked like it, and it also looked like I thought genuinely Van Orbal was going to be broken nose and out for a few weeks with a face mask and whatnot, but he seems to be alright.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he played against us and he was uh pretty good again, so you should have hit him a little harder.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: No, uh well, I no.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: As I said, I think I'm I'm I'm willing to vouch for Luke.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: On the other hand, you never know.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: So he might have just seen red and thought, fuck it, I'm gonna whack this Belgian motherfucker in the head.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I don't I don't uh I don't think so.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: I think uh we give we give them both because of their personalities.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Well, we don't have to give Donalbo the benefit of the doubt, but we gotta give Luke Domushuis the benefit of the doubt.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: I have another question for you.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: You relate to your league.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Pinake this year, are we seeing the effects of not having a world-class drag flicker?
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Um, no.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Um, I think we are seeing the effects of not having a world-class drag flip drag flicker at the moment because uh we haven't scored a single corner in the second half of the season, uh, and we've had uh 10 already.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Okay, Pinoquet is actually scoring corners.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: Miles Buckers has 20 goals right now, uh, so that I don't think they're lacking in the corner division.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: They've scored a corner against us and they've scored a corner against uh Amsterdam.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: I do think uh Pinocchio is seeing the effects of um yeah, um, what's the correct English words?
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Like being satisfied or being uh like the same that happened a bit with the Belgium team, if that makes sense, that they they they got their championship, they won the EHL.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, you just feel that it there's a little less pressure on them, but like in a in a bad way.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: They're a bit they're they're rolling a bit, they're going through the motions a bit.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: It's not the same Pinot K as it was the last couple years.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, and you kind of feel that also.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: I think they still play exactly the same system, uh exactly in the way the same way they press, and they always used to press, but then I think with just a little less quality on the field.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: So they're kind of predictable now.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, I do think they will still be a team, they will never reach playoffs.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: I will I will I will vouch for that one.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: But they will make sure other people don't make the playoffs, if that makes sense.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: They will like fuck up another couple teams.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's yeah, it's difficult.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: I think their coach has all has also been the coach for like eight years or nine years now, uh, which also is like time for a new coach there and like time for a new like a breath of uh fresh air.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: So I think that'll also play it.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: And then yeah, I just I think they lack a little bit in the quality department right now.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: A lot of young guys uh lost a couple important players, so I I'm not too surprised Pinocchio is not the same as they used to be.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Um, is uh the the the uh Bowen uh being in last place also due to not having a world-class drug flicker, or are there more issues there?
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: First of all, I'll correct you.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: Bowden is the team.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Um Bowden, I'm sorry.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: It's do you know what it's really it's really interesting to see in the um it's interesting seeing how difficult it is being on northern side it is to try and one recruit players, but two to also like keep players.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Like it's pretty difficult if a kid's if a kid's good, they're gonna be gone down south to go and join the central program or at least try to.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: So I think from that point of view, of like certain teams struggle to recruit.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It's the same thing with your like your Stixers and your um Nine Megans and things like that.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Like they'll have a potential junior and the junior or Hadi M and the junior will go to a bigger team, like because it's just better for them from a development point of view, it's better for them from a like challenge point of view, it's better for them from financial point of view.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Like, there's so many different benefits that it's really interesting coming back to what I love, or like a club that I'd loved playing for previously, and seeing like how different it is now, there's a centralized program because the last time I played for these guys, there was no centralized program.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: So it was really different from a point of view of like if you recruited and you had players because the national team was camp-based, it meant that you could keep the national team players being at the home clubs or being around the country.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Whereas to see the real effects of not having that is really interesting.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: And like we had a discussion about coaches and things like that, and it's like really interesting to see that there's also just a real lack of like high-quality coaches in the north, like in general, um, which is also really interesting.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Like, there's there's there's there are some, but they're very few and far between, and it's quite difficult to kind of like pinpoint that.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: But the only only real thing I can see from a point of view is the fact that one, there's more money in hockey in the south of the country, and two, like everything that happens within hockey is all based down south, unless you're at university.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: So, like it's pretty fucking difficult to even like get a foot in the door.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: So you almost have to like go a different route.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Like, ultimately, we don't have a world-class drag flicker, yeah.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: That heavily impacts it, but also like there's more to it than that from like a bigger picture thing, which I think is really interesting, but also like it's quite hard to see from like a point of view of I care this much.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: But I don't see that changing in the next few years whilst the program is still afloat.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I can imagine.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: I like I I feel it's it's uh and it's exaggerated in your league, but I feel that even in like the Hofklasse, where like Oranje Road is based in the south, so not in the north, but in the south, but it's a bit the same, it's a bit isolated in Dutch terms.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: I think it's only an hour 15 towards Amsterdam, which in England terms is probably pretty close.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: In Holland terms, it feels like uh a continent away.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: Um, so like we're very we're also like pretty much isolated from the rest, so it's pretty tough to get Dutch talent um to play for Oranje Road because like everyone wants to live in Amsterdam.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: Um, so I kind of get the struggle you're in, and it's tough to change it because you kind of have to change uh and uh culture and feel like you gotta find players willing to stay in the south, or in your case, in north, which is like rough everyone wants to live in London, probably.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Everyone with us wants to live in live in Amsterdam.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a struggle, and we have the luxury that we have like enough money in like most clubs in Holland have enough money to to get foreign players, like get Brits, Belgian players, Spanish players, whatever.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, and don't think guessing Bowden doesn't have that luxury of getting players from abroad.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: No, you've got and the that's the thing is like you've got to be then creative with how you use that money.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Like, is it that you actually then set up a network that provides jobs for people that then actually because I think the hardest thing for like a student coming out of university now in England is the fact that trying to get a job is really fucking difficult.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: So then actually, like even just setting someone up with an interview is a is quite a lot now, I think, these days.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Whereas previously, I think it's been a case of right, what cash can you give us?
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: I think that's now starting to change again from the point of view of just trying to set people up for a bit longer term, like a three, four-year plan rather than here's a bit of money for a year, let's see how it goes.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: But as you say, like it's so difficult.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: And I think that's like that's what I find really interesting with the Dutch side of things, is the fact that you see teams like like Stixer, for example, over the past few weeks obviously picked up points against Blumenthal.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: You see like KZ picking up points against Blumenthal as well, and they haven't necessarily got loads of money.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: And actually, it's guys that have been around, like KZ probably have a bit more than than um Stixer, but like Stixer's money, obviously, like ultimately, they've got a load of Dutch guys and a few foreigners, but not necessarily like big names.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: It's really interesting to see how it like plays out because I think there's they're smart with how they use the money, whereas I think in the UK we're just a little bit behind with that from like we've got money, right?
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Well, what's the smart way to use it?
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, KZ is a bit of a uh different ball game.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: I think KZ is like they kind of invested, they have quite a few foreign players, they have two right, two Argentina players, they have a German player, they have an American player, they have like they they invest always quite a lot, but they just I think lack a little bit in.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: They're still building up like a uh culture and a new team, and it's like they they made the leap, I think four years ago, and they kind of kept they're still building, building, building, but it's tough to like have a foundation with foreign players in Holland because you're kind of you have Aussies flying in and out, Argentina players flying in and out, and they're not the best in like setting or like building your foundation because you're very uh how do you say that?
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: You're very um dependable on the on the international program, uh whether whether international programs allow foreign players to even come in.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Uh I think SCSA is doing a really good, uh a really good job at the moment, SCHC.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: Um I think they're just but I think their coach is pretty good.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know him, I have no clue what his name is, even, but he's doing really well.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: He's like they're very tough to play against, like structurally.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: They know who they are, they know what they can do, they know what they can't do.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: But it's very shit to play against them, especially on their ground.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, and they kind of know it, so they they kind of feed off that uh that energy, and you look at their faces, and you know they know you're like if you guys fucking hate it here, yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: But they kind of own it.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so uh we had a tough game there.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: Bloom up had even a tough game at home against them, like they know who they are, and I think that's also very vital.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: They just embrace playing shit hockey, playing a lot of high balls, uh, and defending really hard, but they own it.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: So I think it's a bit similar to what HDM is doing the last couple years, especially on their grounds.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: They just they own being dickheads, yeah.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Uh and they're probably not, but they like kind of own that that mentality, and I think uh that that works well for them.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that'll be really interesting, like off the back of the HDM side of things.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: It's really interesting to see how much of an impact the Casey and brothers have had at Amsterdam.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I know we talked about it previously on the pod, being like it'll be really interesting just to see how they're doing.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's nice to see it actually like working for them.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Like they've they've clearly like gone with like a real energy and a real effort to kind of make a difference.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: And I think they have, I think they've been really good.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Um, it's just been really interesting to see Hadiam off the back of losing them, not necessarily being in the position that they want to be in, and actually again seeing like then almost the negative impact of them leaving has been really interesting to see as well from that point of view of like almost being that like hard to play against side.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: HadiM were that side before, whereas I think they're just struggling a bit now.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I think HDM's still a place to come.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Um and it's still uh but I think they've lost, as you said, quite a lot of quality the last year.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: They had uh the Cassim brothers are uh are are doing um uh softly put very well at Amsterdam, and they've made uh quite an impact on that team, and I think not only with their hockey skills but also their the way they approach the game, uh with their mentality, getting a bit more fuck you into into that Amsterdam squad, uh, which they kind of inherited from the HDM squad, I think.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so they're doing very well, and they're they're they they're a very tough team to play, and I think they're really up, they're up there with with with the with the best teams of the Holf class and can really give Blumedaal a run for their money or a kampong um to go for a championship this year.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: Uh and hopefully we can do the same.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Um, but um to get back to uh to England, um, are you now um in at the bottom of the bottom six teams?
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's very depressing, Brendan.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: No, it's not.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is a little bit.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: It's fucking depressing.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Like to be in the bottom six league, okay.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: Then to be the bottom of the bottom six league, you're like the loser of the loser pack.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Do you know what?
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: You one, you could look at it that way, yes.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Or do you know what's really nice?
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: It sounds really weird, but like going out and your performance matters each week is a really nice way to like feel about playing.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Sounds ridiculous, right?
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: But like going through the servers and stuff, there was two games, maybe four games a year where like you had to perform well or else it hurt you.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: I've now got to basically perform well as an individual every single week to even give a slim chance of getting points.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: And how how I was fucking dreadful last week.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Um but like it sounds ridiculous, but like this is gonna sound even more ridiculous.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: So watching the Pro League, um, the first game of the pro league, and seeing that someone's moved to my number in the national team, like even that was like a bit of like a shit, like life's moved on.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: Do you know what I mean?
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: So it's like rather than like being like, oh, I miss Serviton and like I miss playing national team stuff, it's been like shit, like it's just move on.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: And I think that's been like a bit of a blessing for me of like there's no point like fixating on other stuff.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: So, like again, going back to it, like Serbon stuff was fun, but just like it just most weeks we'd win like seven, two, seven, three, and I'd come away and I'd be in a shit mood because we'd lose.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: We'd concede three games, three goals, but we still win.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, well, that's just like such a weird way to look at it.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: Whereas now I'm a bit like I actually'm just scrapping for everything.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, now you concede seven and you still feel you're feel just a little less shit.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: No, I just I don't know, there's just something about it of like the simplicity of the fact that I'm just playing the sport that I really, really like in a group where I actually feel like I matter.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Sounds weird that, but like it's just been really fun.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's been learning on the job, learning how to do things differently, like working out how to maximize what we've got when it's limited.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Like it's a really cool thing to actually like go through and like learn rather than previously having like a pool of players where it's ridiculously high level, um, but actually what it means is that half the people don't play as well as they should do because they're being held back because they're not playing as many minutes or they're not getting the right position, or this, that, and the other.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: It's like it's just really interesting going through it differently.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: But in answer to your first original question, mate, yeah, it's shit being bottom of the bottom.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I very I like your philosophy like your philosophies and feeling value in the shit.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: You're in the group of people being bullied, like from the in-betweeners, you know who you are.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: The question I've got you is if you were in my position, would you have moved clubs bad out?
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: That's a tough, tough question.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: What's the guy?
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, by the way, what's the guy from in-betweeners?
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: With uh it's not Simon, but the guy with the Mill with the hot with the hot mom and was getting briefcase briefcase wanker.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: Brief wanker, yeah.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: I knew that was gonna be.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: League next year.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, you are nothing but negative.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: If you by the way, we haven't decided an episode name for this.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: We didn't do the intro either because Phil's not turning up now.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: So Phil is not even joining in.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: No.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Is he not joining?
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: No.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Okay, I want to take this moment to address the listeners.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: Because I was, you know what?
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: All we do, Brandon and me, is we give, we give, we give.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: I was.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: I got some text from people who are who asked me, hey, when are you gonna record again?
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: When are you gonna record again?
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: I thought I'm actually too busy to do it, but you we gotta give the fans what they want.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: The millions of people who listen to Let's Stick Together, we gotta give them what they want.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: So I make time in my schedule to record.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: Then fucking Philip just decides to not show up.
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: That's so not like Brendan.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: Don't take this personal.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: I expected that from you, not from Philip.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: He's like the one thing in this podcast that we could depend on, that we could like count on, that would always deliver, who makes an episode sheet, who like he's the he's the spirit of this.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: No, not the spirit, I'm the spirit.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: He's like the foundation of this of this of this podcast.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: He decides to fuck off.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: The house is falling apart.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: Our foundation is gone.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: I think we're actually, and I want to give you a compliment, Brandon.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: We're doing very well without our foundation right now.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: The house is wobbling.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: To give you a real insight to the listeners, uh, Bill is dealing with uh one of his children being ill at the moment, so that's why he's not here.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is the first time I think ever that me and Yup have turned up on time and Phil hasn't.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: And Yupe's right, our foundations are currently not there.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: So we're we're basically being held together by maybe three nails, a bit of wood, and we're hoping for the best.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: But we know full well that the house is coming down at some point.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: It's just a question of when.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: You know what we're gonna do.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: I think it's time for a break.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: I think we've done very well up until now.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: We're gonna we're gonna try and get uh get uh our foundation back.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: If we cannot get our foundation back, we might look into a vacation home and try and see if we can get surprised guests on the podcast who's willing to come on their Wednesday night to join.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: If not, you guys have to deal with me and Brandon pre-wheeling it and seeing what we come up with.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: We'll be back later.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Thanks for listening for now, and we'll see you after the break.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: We're back and no guest.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: So we did some digging, we tried to get Phil to come back and help us, but he didn't, left us out to dry.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: So, you know what?
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: Brendan, I mean, we're both almost.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: Brendan is already 30, I'm almost 30, we're grown men, we can handle ourselves at least somewhat.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna just rock with the two of us.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: They're with us in in complete uh Brendan and Yub de Mol fashion.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: We did not prepare anything before the episode and trusted uh our foundation of our home, Philip Roper, to do all the preparing stuff.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Um but you'll see, Brendan, that this will be the best episode yet in all our seasons because it's purely spontaneous and it's about winging it.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Welcome to my style of podcasting, Brandon.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: In my in my defense, I've actually written notes, but I don't want to waste the notes on just us two when I feel like we can have a full discussion with the three of us.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: I'm very, very honored that you don't want to waste notes on me.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Brandon.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: That makes me feel very good.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, the one thing we are is we are honest with each other after telling me that it's depressing the fact that I'm playing for the bottom of the bottom.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, great.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: I think my uh comparison of you and briefcase wanker will is uncanny.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Um we did prepare in the last 10 minutes something.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: It shows how quick on our feet we are, how agile we are, how we don't get rattled by the situation of losing our foundation to a home.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: We just build another fucking home.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: What we're going to do, my dear listeners, is since Phil is not here, it's very easy to talk about him and give him shit because there's no no chance for him to give a rebundle.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: So I came up with five questions about Philip.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: Brendan came up came up with five questions about Philip.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: They are very valid questions, they're questions I think everyone, the people want to know.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, and we're just gonna um talk about Phil since he's not here.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: That seems like a completely fair thing to do.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: You agree, Brendan?
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: Do you want to start?
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: I'll go I'll go first.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Um if you could have one thing from Phil's body, what would you choose?
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, what a great question to start with.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: Good luck.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: Um well, I have pretty glorious hair, so I wouldn't give up my glorious hair to Phil's muffin top.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: I don't want the broccoli either.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: No, he he is a very handsome man though.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: Uh I I choose his his lack of body hair.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: I think that's quite a desirable trait.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: He never has the he just doesn't grow it, just doesn't get any.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but to give you a little secret I I don't I also don't have the ability to grow any body hair as well.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: Um so I'm not too jealous about it.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: I'd love to have a good full beard, but Phil also has like like pubes on his face.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: So hey, that's question two.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think uh Phil's uh he's not a really desirable man if you think about it, huh?
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Maybe his his chest.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: No, it's okay.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Because because both of us have a lack of, yeah, I like it.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Mine grows inwards.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: That's not right.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: My first question about Phil.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Would you rather have Phil's speed or Phil's ability to pass?
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Both pretty undesirable.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: Um I think I'd choose his ability to pass, and the reason is is I think he can, he just chooses not to a lot.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, my I had I had the exact same thinking.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: I was like, yeah, I know he's not quick.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: Like, I know he's like getting old and doesn't run uh very quickly anymore, but I don't know if he can pass because he never does.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: So he might have a really good pass, he just never shows it.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: So I would also choose his ability to pass.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Your next question.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: We both came up with this question to be fair.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Um, if Phil wasn't British, what nationality would most suit him as a player?
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: So this is actually like a serious question.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: You go for it.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I had the same idea.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: Which country next to GB would Phil best fit into play at.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Um, I was having a pretty tough time.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Like, I know how much he loves uh Australia and all the people and the players in it.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: So my first guess would be Australia, but then again, he's not the best, the most physical player.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: Like he's a bit too like the um like I'm actually gonna give him like he's a very stylish player, like his game would kind of suit uh uh uh Holland as in uh bit similar, similar playstyle to to uh to to England, the running gun, the man-to-man.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: Um also I would like to see him play in India.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: What he has he has a really good right foot dribble.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't think he's very tactically uh strong.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: I think he has no clue what's going on half the time in the field, but he is very skillful, can eliminate anyone and every and and and everyone at any place in the field, and also tries to eliminate everyone and anyone at any place at any time in the field.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: So I think he would fit in perfectly in India.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Okay, you went for completely the opposite to me.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: I went for I went for Spain slash Argentina.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, good one.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: He's got a little bit of a I actually wrote two players down that I would compare him to uh Manini and Matsilli.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: Now I know Manini's originally Argentina, but Phil's got that like ability to basically just beat people if he wants to.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: He'll shoot from some rogue places, but he also looks like he's never really sprinting.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: And those two players kind of always make me think of like they're moving and they are sprinting, but they just don't look like they are.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: So I that's why I went with those two.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: And the same for the exact same reasons of tactically not necessarily always there, like drifts around a little bit, and then when he gets on the ball, he creates shit.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: I think Minini is the perfect comparison, player comparison to Phil.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: I think they're very similar, and they're very they're like strikers who play on the midfield, they're very skillful, they always want to have the ball and always want to play hockey, find a hockey solution.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: Like, we're actually gonna give Philip Philip also some credit.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: He's he's one of the more fun players to look at, and I think that's a really good one.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: I think you want it with uh with Spain, I think it would fit in very well there.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: Um okay, next one.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: Uh, hypothetical.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Would you forgive Phil uh for not being there to start the podcast season opener or look for another host to replace him?
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Specifically hypothetical.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not real because who would skip the first podcast of the season when you're the foundation uh of the house.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Um, but if he would, would you look for another uh host or cut him some slack and uh uh um say that having an ill child uh is a valid reason to not record a podcast on a Wednesday night with two pretty random guys?
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go with I'd cut him some slack.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: I've just had a thought.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: Do you think he's done it on purpose?
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: And the only reason I say this is we have a distinct lack of commitment, and the fact that we've tried to record as the two of us is all Phil needed to come back because he now sees that we really do care and we do want it to work, and that's the reason all he needed was a bit of confirmation that we'd put in the effort to try and make it work and fail.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: And knowing we might fail, I think he's not that far ahead and he his child is genuinely ill.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: I do think Phil would not lie about his child being ill, and I also don't think Phil is smart enough to come up with such uh such an elaborate plan.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, I also think Phil loves doing this podcast too much, loves the fans too much, and I might even go as far as loves us too much to let us swim around in our own sorrow here and try to make something of this episode.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: So uh no.
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: But okay, I would also choose to cut him some slack uh and uh uh uh kind of agree that uh that an ill child is a good reason not to do a podcast, although I think us recording a podcast with us and like two of your best friends is more important than your child, but that's in my opinion.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: Okay, next question about Philip Roper.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, would you rather have Phil's facial hair or his headband?
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: And you'd have to have it on the whole time, can't take it off, can't shave any of his facial hair.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: You just get a little bit of a touch and a little bit of a beard, like a little bit of a chin, and that's it.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Or headband 24-7.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's so the headband 24-7 is definitely not an option, like it kind of looks ridiculous on Phil, so it would look even more ridiculous on me because he he kind of pulls it off.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it does.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: Again, I don't really have facial hair, I have like a little patch here and a little patch on my upper lip, uh, which looks like uh pubes that ran from like my ball sack to my face.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: Um so it wouldn't it wouldn't change a whole lot to be honest.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: Um, so I think I'd go for the facial hair of Philip.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Gin ginger facial hair is not a good look, mate.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: Believe me, I know, but it's the look it's the look I'm rocking with.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: I got it, I gotta, I gotta, I gotta do it.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: I honestly on Phil, I kinda it kind of works, right?
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's got a little bit of a Greek vibe to him, so I think it kind of works.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: Kind of.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: I mean I'd choose the headband, I wouldn't want that facial hair.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: It's it's crap.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, with yeah, with your face, I would also like to cover as much as possible.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thanks, mate.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: Or is the best yet to cover?
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Do you know what?
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: I had a phone call with him the other day.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: It's the first time he's had a break for I reckon a good few years.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: I genuinely think that he might still be at the top of his game.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: I haven't watched him play, I haven't seen him since week one, so I can't give any comment on how he's actually doing, but it's nice to know that he's kind of like feels he's got the vibe and the buzz back for it again, which I think is quite cool because like there comes a point where obviously, like, if you do it the whole time and you don't have any break, there is a point where you're like, What am I doing?
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: And I think it's actually quite healthy to have that break, and I think he's had that.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: So for me, I don't think he's past it.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: And I feel you're gonna say something different.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: No, me neither.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: I have a lot of faith in my friends, I think the best is yet to come.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: Because let's be honest, not a lot of good has been there yet, right?
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Like, what has he really done?
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: Can we not do this?
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Because I've I've accomplished less.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: I I'm full aware, Brendan.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: I don't need this right now.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: No, I think he's I think he's he's doing I think the best is yet to come.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: I think he has uh the fountain of eternal youth next to him.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: So I think he's uh he will he will his body will rejuvenate, he will stop being injured injured, uh injured, and I think he will get back.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: I have all the faith.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna kind of positive thinking for him.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: He is gonna achieve something with uh all Georgians.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: He'll probably end up winning the league because there's no other good team in England, right?
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Except for Bowden.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: I do have a question, I've not even written this down.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: Do you think Phil at the top of his game would walk into is there a is there a nation that you don't think Phil would get into?
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: Holland.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: No, other than that, I think he would uh Do you not think he would get into the Dutch side?
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: Nah, I think he would.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: On top of his game, I think he would, but he he really can't defend, can he?
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, I've seen him tackle someone I'd like made two tackles in a game once.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: That was pretty impressive.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: But other than that, but if you have to say about a player, if you have to say about a player, I've seen him tackle twice in one game and it was impressive.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: I think that's that's yeah, you say that, but for a forward, if you actually cleanly tackle someone twice, I think that's actually quite a good thing.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's impressive.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: But that's a good I'm I think a serious question though.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't think there's a team that you wouldn't get into at the top of his game.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: No, fair.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: I think on top of his game, I think any team would be would be happy to have a Phil Roper on board um on top of his game.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: On the other hand, when he's not on top of his game, yeah, tough player to have in your team.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he can also I've played, I've played, I've played uh uh a season with him.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: I think I give him a lot of shit, but I think I'm it might be his biggest fan on on the hockey field.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: I love him to death, but he also he can be a and and it takes one to know one, eh?
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: Don't get me wrong, but he can be a real bitch in the field.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: He's a diva.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, he's a diva.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, we are I think I think that's what I think all three of us have in our locker that we're not necessarily proud about, but we will own it.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: Like it again, it takes one to know one because I know I'm a terrible bitch sometimes on the field, and I can be I look like the whole world is against me, but Philip also really has that, so it kind of when you have it yourself, you're kind of very aware of when someone else has it.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um I I had one final question about Phil.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, if a Saudi hockey league would come up uh where you would sell your soul to play hockey for a shitload of money, do you think Philip Phil would go for it?
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah, no thoughts, sports washing, not asked.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: How much is it?
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: But then the question is, would you do the same?
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: No, I'm uh I'm I loved the game of hockey.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: That's an absolute lie, especially if all three of us were on the same team.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: I would want to play on the same team with the three of us once.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: It would be fucking hilarious.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: Um did you have another Philip Rober question?
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what's Phil's favorite holiday destination?
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: See if you really know him.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: Because I'm guessing at mine.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: I'm guessing at my answer.
- 40:14SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I know his family-in-law has a Greek background, right?
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Specifically which island?
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: Make sure it's a Greek, I want to make sure it's a Greek island.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: So uh I I to be honest, I don't know the island, but I know like uh uh Nicole has Greek roots.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: So you think Greece?
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: You think I know I know his favorite, his dream holiday right now at this part of his life would be to make the trip over the canal to Holland to come to my place, sleep over with the two kids, and have the weekend of their lives.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: Nicole seeing her best friend Yub de Mol again, Phil seeing his best friend Yupe de Mol again, the kids seeing their favorite Funkel Jub de Mol again.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: That would be his if if it would be anything else, I'd be very disappointed.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: And the other answer would be San Francisco, uh, to see uh Steph Curry play in an NBA game.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: Hey, tell you what, I think you know what, I think you've genuinely, apart from all that shite in the middle about going to Holland, I actually think you've done pretty well there.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: I think I genuinely think I think Cree is the favorite holiday destination.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, fair.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: But I also think that if there's one thing I think he would love to do is to go watch Steph Curry play.
- 41:45SPEAKER_00: I think whether that's in San Fran or whether that's in the UK, if if the Golden State ever play in London, that's one of those things that I think, yeah, that'd be that'd be up top of his list, I think, from a like holiday point of view.
- 41:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so too.
- 42:00SPEAKER_02: Um, so I think that that wraps up the Phil Roper part of this uh podcast.
- 42:04SPEAKER_02: If you guys have any questions about Phil, um please send them to Phil Roper92 at uh gmail.com uh and he will answer all the questions you have left for him.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: Um, you can ask him anything you want.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: Uh again, he'll be there 24-7 um to take care of you guys.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: And I hope you like this part of the podcast about Phil.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: Um, to wrap up the episode, um uh and again bear with us.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: We try to do our best.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: I know it's probably not content-wise the best episode we did, but again, our foundation decided to fuck off.
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: Um we we came up with a with like three coupon questions, Brent.
- 42:48SPEAKER_02: I've got two.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I have one.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: And one and a half.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: I'll come up with another one.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: I feel like intense though.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: Sorry?
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: I feel mine's quite intense.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: That's the that it's perfect for the coop.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: That's like right up my alley for the coop.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 43:11SPEAKER_02: I I that's also I gotta learn as a host, uh as a stand-in host.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, Brendan.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: I owned up I I owned the host job right now.
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, to write shit down because I came up with an amazing coup question and now I forgot.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: You start, then I'll think of my coop question again.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: Um best coach you've ever had.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: We might have asked it before, but more like I've always I'm I'm intrigued more from like a your own Del May, Eric for Boom point of view, because I feel your own part to actually like your development has been actually part down to your own almost not picking you.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: So that makes sense, that makes sense.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: It sounds really weird, but like almost like the fact that you were able to have like series.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Honest conversations with him has got you to where you've got to without it being like, Do you know what I mean?
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: So he's almost like, yeah, yeah, Brandon.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: I completely get what you mean, and I think it's a very good question.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: But to be honest, when you said to me it was gonna be intense, I thought you had to choose whether you would kill like your mom or your dad or something like that, like intense, intense.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: And now I get a question who my best coach has ever been.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: So I kind of have to like rethink and like re-regenerate my brain, because now I feel like I have to give a serious answer when the group is there to fuck around.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: But I like the question.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just to go, just to warn you, wait for question two.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: Okay, good great.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: I think my best coach, like I have I think I've been lucky enough to work with a lot of good coaches.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: I think on a club level, uh, because I think there's a difference on the club level and an international level.
- 44:50SPEAKER_02: I think on the club level, uh Michel van der Heuvel was up there, but it was also because we had an incredible team uh back then at Orange Schwartz, yeah, and he was like on top of everything, and I think he was really good at making every top player uh and wasn't me because I was quite shit back then, but like make every top player feel valued and feel uh good and perform at their best.
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: And I think internationally it's like pretty easy right now because Del May, I think, has been so good, at least for for the last three years, uh on top of everything and making everything so clear and so uh yeah, no, there was like no room to not get on board with what he was doing, as in like there was, but like you just didn't want to.
- 45:39SPEAKER_02: Uh I tried to not be on board, but lost me a world that's not true.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: No, but like he's been so good, and just like you said, I think him dropping me made me the player I am today.
- 45:52SPEAKER_02: I think him dropping me was kind of the best thing to happen to my hockey career.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: Um there is there has been because it like drove me towards becoming a better player.
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: And if he would have taken me towards the World Cup, I don't think I would have been at uh Paris, like I would have missed a tournament if he didn't give me that signal of mate, what you're doing now is just not good enough.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so and I don't I'm not I'm I'll never know if he did it on purpose to make me a better player or that I just wasn't good enough and he thought I don't need this guy, but it it turned out uh fucking great, and he was the one thing I always valued in him is even though he dropped me, he still gave me attention the attention I needed to become a better player.
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: Like he didn't give up on me, he still texted me, he still wanted me to do better, still like wanted me to perform and get help me reach my goals.
- 46:43SPEAKER_02: So I think yeah, I really valued that.
- 46:46SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I think uh Del May.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: I think I know Del May, and I gotta give credit to Eric van Bohm, like you said as well, because I think he's the best field hockey trainer there is right now uh in setting up making exercises, making it work.
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: They both um wake up thinking about hockey and go to bed thinking about hockey, and I think that's what it's what's needed to be a good coach.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, and you yeah, I think I I find that really interesting just from like just before I go on to my stuff, like it's the fact that he's wanting, like you feel like you're wanted with both.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: I think is one of those like really interesting things because even though he doesn't pick you, he still wants you to be better.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: And I think that like that requires quite a lot, I think, from a coach to be able to spread yourself across a squad of 30 is quite impressive if you can do that.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: Um it's just also like maximizing the time and finding the time to be able to do it.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: Um, internationally, the last two years, I think I got a lot better because of Craig Sieben, who's now what Belgian assistant.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: Um I think he like his attention to detail is something else, and from the understanding of his conversations with other people as well, his like the way he sees the game has genuinely changed the way I've seen the game as well, which I think is quite cool.
- 48:03SPEAKER_00: Um, to have some such little time to have such an impact, I think is really interesting.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: Um club-wise, I don't know, probably Beckman, but probably for the similar reason of Michelle van der Hervel, like, or in the same for Del May, like you don't have a choice but to be on board.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: Like you just don't have a choice because they live and breathe what they do, they wake up, they give so much passion and energy towards it, or you're kind of like you've got nothing but buy-in from it.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, and I think like the loads of people talk about Beckman, basically, who's now based at Hamburger Polo, I think.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: They talk about him basically managing to do ridiculous things with a squad that should never be able to do what they do.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: And I think that kind of like appreciation for squeezing every single bit of energy and juice out of someone is something that I think is quite difficult to find.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: But once you find it, it's quite hard to almost step away from.
- 48:57SPEAKER_00: And it and if the other thing that I found really interesting with him is the fact that people did walk away because they couldn't deal with him, and he was like, Okay, like happily give you a good resume and off you go.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not gonna kick off, but I'm gonna push you as hard as I can.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: So I think from that point of view, it's really interesting.
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it's a it's a special job being a coach.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: You gotta I think you gotta live briefly.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 49:22SPEAKER_00: Because you don't you don't get paid like, and that's what I tell you what, moving into that world is like a real eye-opener into how hard people work.
- 49:33SPEAKER_00: Like I know Maddie, when she first started in the coaching world, she said that like every player should almost do a month of coaching to appreciate how much work goes into like each training session or like each like pre-match briefing or post-match brief debrief and stuff like that.
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: I think it's really interesting to kind of like to have an appreciation for how hard that job is, I think is something that shouldn't be understated.
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well done.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: Go on then, hit me.
- 50:02SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm expecting something rogue coming from you.
- 50:04SPEAKER_02: I yeah, I think we kind of it's not really rogue, but I think we kind of discussed it already.
- 50:09SPEAKER_02: But I think it's cool to have an update.
- 50:11SPEAKER_02: If an if an actor would play uh uh the the the lead role in the in the movie about your life, who would who would play you?
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: Oh Jesus, mine would have changed.
- 50:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: It's I think it's changed.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: Who who would play Phil?
- 50:30SPEAKER_02: Uh Banderas.
- 50:33SPEAKER_02: Do you remember him?
- 50:34SPEAKER_02: Antonio Banderas?
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so from Zorro.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel like that he's got a bit of Phil facial hair, and he's got that flowing brown locks a bit like I was thinking about the guy who played McLovin.
- 50:48SPEAKER_02: Super best.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: I was gonna I was about to say either that or Jonah Hill with Phil's like curls at the top.
- 50:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, slim Jonah Hill would better really be a very good one to play.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: What's his name?
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: Who does play McLovin?
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna it's gonna kill him.
- 51:00SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna find it.
- 51:02SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: Or maybe who would like who generally looks at it is Andrew Garfield.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: You know him, yeah.
- 51:09SPEAKER_02: He kind of he would pull he's a bit the same build.
- 51:12SPEAKER_02: He he he could play Philip in a in a no, he's too good looking.
- 51:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay, but it's a movie, like you you're coming off a little better than you are.
- 51:21SPEAKER_02: So I think I he would play very well.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: Do you know who I do know who I would have said for me?
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: Well, Heath Ledger.
- 51:29SPEAKER_00: That's what I think could have done.
- 51:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's a heavy one, Brent.
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sorry.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: All right, uh Will Farrell or Mark Wahlberg.
- 51:47SPEAKER_02: Will Fitma, I can see Mark Wahlberg, come up.
- 51:50SPEAKER_02: You're giving come on, you're giving yourself a lot of credit.
- 51:53SPEAKER_02: Choose Brett Pitt or George Crude for us.
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, yeah, do you know what?
- 51:59SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to think of like I was trying to think of someone who's got decent long blonde hair.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: That's the problem.
- 52:05SPEAKER_02: No, I think I think who's the guy from the Ricky Gervais show with the glasses, the long tall guy.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: Merchant, Steven Merchant, he would play you 100%, same same, same kind of appearance, but also same personality.
- 52:24SPEAKER_02: I think he would play you perfectly.
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: Oh my lord.
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: Do you know what?
- 52:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we can't even argue.
- 52:30SPEAKER_02: Anyone in the if if if this was like a common thing, if anyone in the comments says the guy who plays Ron Weasley for me, I will come at you and fucking kill you, uh, or at Sheeran.
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: Haha.
- 52:42SPEAKER_02: Fuck both of you.
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: I think for me, it would be good.
- 52:50SPEAKER_02: I've been thinking so much about you and Phil that I don't really thought, haven't really thought about myself.
- 52:57SPEAKER_02: I'm leaning, leaning towards um that's that's a tough one, eh?
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: No, I'm gonna just gonna type in extremely tall actors and see who comes up.
- 53:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you gotta have like a like a tall, handsome, full of charisma, funny, nice, loving person.
- 53:19SPEAKER_00: Got it, Vince Vaughan.
- 53:21SPEAKER_00: Who's Vince Vaughn?
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: What do you mean who's Vince Vaughn?
- 53:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, who is Vince Ball.
- 53:31SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, he's yeah, okay.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: I take that.
- 53:36SPEAKER_02: He doesn't look at all like me.
- 53:38SPEAKER_02: He doesn't look at all like me, but in wedding, oh fuck, I know Owen Wilson.
- 53:48SPEAKER_00: That's not a bad shot.
- 53:49SPEAKER_00: You both got big noses as well.
- 53:52SPEAKER_00: Wow, wow, wow, wow, yeah.
- 53:57SPEAKER_02: So either Vince for like wedding crashes, like I think that would also be a good movie for me.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: I think I do well in that movie.
- 54:04SPEAKER_00: I feel like you when ropes was uh I tell you what, when it was ropes yourself and Amesy at OR, you could have had Steven Merchant as Ames, you could have had Vince Vaughan as ropes, and you could have been Owen Wilson, and that would have been a three.
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fair.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: Fair also thought, yeah, yeah.
- 54:22SPEAKER_02: Well, I think to be honest, I think we kind of hit our peak.
- 54:26SPEAKER_02: Uh or we have another maybe, maybe do your your coop question.
- 54:30SPEAKER_02: No, my coop question is gonna drag it down.
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: We don't need to do that.
- 54:33SPEAKER_02: Well, we need some dragging down because it's been too good.
- 54:36SPEAKER_00: I think everyone can agree.
- 54:37SPEAKER_00: This episode we've had a hell of a ride, just the two of us.
- 54:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, we'll save it for next week.
- 54:43SPEAKER_02: Um, so that that wraps it up, lovely listeners.
- 54:47SPEAKER_02: Um, maybe it's good to say we're both here by Y1, um, sponsor of the podcast.
- 54:53SPEAKER_02: If you've made it this far, uh thank you.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, this this has been it.
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, we're not also not very used to doing outros.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: Um, normally Philip does that, uh, but as we said multiple times, our foundation left the house.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: We had to build another house.
- 55:11SPEAKER_02: Um, again, thank you to Y1 um for uh for uh being brought by.
- 55:18SPEAKER_02: And uh I hope you guys enjoyed.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: We'll make sure we Philip is there next week to bring some order in our chaos.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: Do you have anything to say, Brendan?
- 55:27SPEAKER_02: No, I I agree.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: We need order.
- 55:30SPEAKER_00: We need help, we need a career.
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: Give us a break, we tried.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: Um, thank you all, and we love you.
- 55:38SPEAKER_02: And Philip, we hope you're back soon.
- 55:41SPEAKER_02: Cheerio.
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: Cheerio.
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: I think we call the episode the one without foundations.
- 56:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 56:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 56:13SPEAKER_02: A house with no foundation.
- 56:15SPEAKER_00: Yes.
