- 0:02Speaker 1: Me and my boyfriend were literally holding each other all week.
- 0:06Speaker 1: We couldn't stop talking about waiting to see this one
- 0:08Speaker 1: moment from the trailer that we were obsessed with. And
- 0:11Speaker 1: it is, of course Selma Hiak saying tanos, and then
- 0:16Speaker 1: they re dubbed it and now in the movie she
- 0:18Speaker 1: says than os. I know, I'm as Marvel has such
- 0:31Speaker 1: a special place in my heart, friend, because this time
- 0:35Speaker 1: last year, my only social interaction was every week was
- 0:39Speaker 1: going over to your apartment to watch One Division. Yeah,
- 0:43Speaker 1: we had nothing, truly nothing else to live for at
- 0:45Speaker 1: that stage in our lives. And I really feel like
- 0:47Speaker 1: wand Division was the thing to make me care about
- 0:51Speaker 1: the rest of the m c U. And so I
- 0:53Speaker 1: was like, Hm, what did these Avengers like? What's there?
- 0:55Speaker 1: What's their story? I do think it kind of pulled
- 0:58Speaker 1: everyone back into the see you in a way because
- 1:01Speaker 1: it was like one of those rare Marvel things that
- 1:04Speaker 1: like people who like don't usually watch that kind of stuff.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We're watching it and you know, like the ubiquitous nous
- 1:12Speaker 1: of it. I'm like Agatha all along, and it was
- 1:16Speaker 1: the moment exactly. I do feel also that there is
- 1:19Speaker 1: like there was a compelling humanity to like Wanda that
- 1:23Speaker 1: helped me start to see what was so amazing about
- 1:26Speaker 1: all the other members of the n c U. And
- 1:29Speaker 1: like maybe for the virgins at home that are turning
- 1:31Speaker 1: on this episode and being like a Marvel I'm just
- 1:34Speaker 1: like not prippy to like whatever the funk this is.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I encourage you as someone who is kind of that person,
- 1:40Speaker 1: because I'm never paying attention honestly during Marvel movies. As
- 1:43Speaker 1: much as the post credits kind of entwined narratives of
- 1:47Speaker 1: all of the twenty seven of these movies is very overwhelming,
- 1:50Speaker 1: it actually is not as complicated as you think if
- 1:53Speaker 1: you get as invested in the kind of emotions and
- 1:57Speaker 1: characters as you do for watching, or if you have
- 2:00Speaker 1: Marvel stands to talk through it with you like we
- 2:04Speaker 1: do today because Jolk and Booster is here to talk
- 2:07Speaker 1: about Marvel with us and a very irreverent but like
- 2:11Speaker 1: also like serious and analytical way, because this is like
- 2:15Speaker 1: a virgin the show where we give yesterday's pop culture
- 2:18Speaker 1: today's takes. I'm Rose damn you, and I'm Fran Toronto.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And before we go into the multiverse of madness, let's
- 2:25Speaker 1: talk about what's going on in today's pop culture. Absolutely,
- 2:33Speaker 1: she lived, she served, kunt she died, and of course
- 2:38Speaker 1: the she we are talking about is the Green Eminem.
- 2:43Speaker 1: May she rest in peace, May she rest in power,
- 2:46Speaker 1: May she rest in power, the Green I can't believe
- 2:50Speaker 1: they deascified the Green Eminem. Honestly dsified. And I have
- 2:55Speaker 1: been told for at least a year now that the
- 2:58Speaker 1: Green Eminem is canonically trans Have you ever come across
- 3:01Speaker 1: this conversation on the internet. Yeah, I used to see
- 3:03Speaker 1: her in line at Colin lord Um. I feel like
- 3:10Speaker 1: Eminem's caught wind of this internet conversation and usurped it
- 3:14Speaker 1: for recuperations on a deteriorating brand. Why did they have
- 3:20Speaker 1: to take away her tabby boots? We need an eminem
- 3:24Speaker 1: who eats us. If anybody doesn't know, there was like
- 3:28Speaker 1: basically a press release of some kind sent out last tweet.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It was a tweet that showed a picture of the Eminem's,
- 3:37Speaker 1: all of the different Eminem's, saying that they're globally rebranded
- 3:40Speaker 1: for a more inclusive era. They grabbed Chad as this
- 3:44Speaker 1: woke button and hit it. They didn't hit the sleigh button.
- 3:48Speaker 1: They hit the woke button. They hit it hard. A
- 3:50Speaker 1: couple of times. Yeah. So people were quick to point
- 3:54Speaker 1: out that Mars, the overall company, is in a child
- 3:57Speaker 1: slavery lawsuit. Um, and so this is all of smoke
- 4:01Speaker 1: screen distract people, purportedly all of smoke screen because they've
- 4:05Speaker 1: been profiting off of like eleven year olds who work
- 4:08Speaker 1: on cocoa farms in the Ivory Coast without pay for years.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I believe it. I will believe any conspiracy. Yeah. Same,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and like unfortunate have to say it, our girl Tucker
- 4:18Speaker 1: Carlson felt to type away about these eminem's And obviously
- 4:23Speaker 1: Tucker Carlson is like abhorrent and like obviously it's like
- 4:26Speaker 1: so gross because like the reason he's so mad is
- 4:29Speaker 1: because he wants so bad to like fuck an eminem
- 4:32Speaker 1: but he really does. But unfortunately he didn't make some
- 4:37Speaker 1: points and he has a right to make fun of
- 4:40Speaker 1: us as a culture. I think, Yeah, well, I don't
- 4:43Speaker 1: know that I want to be lumped in with us
- 4:45Speaker 1: that made under the eminem's. You know who asked for this?
- 4:51Speaker 1: I mean I did. I've been writing in every Day
- 4:53Speaker 1: Rose asking them to please please create a more inclusive
- 4:57Speaker 1: green ups. Did they hire you freelance to work on
- 5:00Speaker 1: the campaign brand where you did you consult is such
- 5:09Speaker 1: an accurate drag. I hate you, but you have done
- 5:18Speaker 1: a disservice to your community and you need to be
- 5:22Speaker 1: held accountable. You know. I don't want to talk about
- 5:24Speaker 1: it too much more, but I just have to say,
- 5:26Speaker 1: you know, in the same line of like when Oreos
- 5:29Speaker 1: tweeted that trans people exist, or like the we don't
- 5:33Speaker 1: stop it, the mixed potato head of it all, which
- 5:37Speaker 1: I think happens like the same week. And then, of
- 5:39Speaker 1: course there was Patty Harrison's iconic Twitter takeover of the
- 5:43Speaker 1: Nilo Wait First account. She said that she was Sia
- 5:49Speaker 1: doing a Twitter takeover, that there were only two gators,
- 5:54Speaker 1: which is notoriously how people get taken off Twitter. Yeah,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and she's verified, so it looks like it's real. She said, Hello,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I am Cia, the singer doing social media takeover for
- 6:03Speaker 1: Nila way First today there are only two genders. Then
- 6:07Speaker 1: she tweeted trans women are men. Then she quote tweeted
- 6:12Speaker 1: that and said, transphobia is never okay. Thank you for
- 6:15Speaker 1: holding us accountable. We are better than this. We strive
- 6:17Speaker 1: to learn and grow as a brand, and you make
- 6:19Speaker 1: that possible. I'm I'm gonna swing from the chandelier from
- 6:24Speaker 1: the chandelier. Cia. She did also tweet if you're bisexual,
- 6:31Speaker 1: we do not want your business, which, honestly fair. Wow,
- 6:36Speaker 1: that's extremely biphobic. Fran You know what I am biphobic? Well,
- 6:41Speaker 1: you know what. I'm fran phobic. Oh are you really? Yeah?
- 6:45Speaker 1: Specifically you not. Fran find is not included in this.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Oh I see, okay, what about fran Lebowitz. No comments.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Speaking of fran Lebowitz, I have to say I watched
- 6:56Speaker 1: the Andre Leon Tally documentary over the weekend, which is
- 6:59Speaker 1: on HBO. Max. Fran is in it, I think for
- 7:03Speaker 1: like one interview, but the documentary as a whole is
- 7:07Speaker 1: like amazing. I strongly recommend you would actually love it. Rose.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Everyone listened to this podcast, would I don't like you
- 7:13Speaker 1: telling me that I'm going to love things? Yeah, and
- 7:15Speaker 1: I want to not like them out of spice that said,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you know, Andrelean Tali was like such an incredible person.
- 7:22Speaker 1: He's like someone that I personally have admired for so long.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And did you read his book? No? I didn't, And
- 7:28Speaker 1: you know it's funny. Is I also very classic? Me
- 7:31Speaker 1: had no idea that he was a judge on America's
- 7:34Speaker 1: Next Top Model. He did really make the pop culture
- 7:37Speaker 1: rounds the last like decade of his life, maybe more
- 7:42Speaker 1: than a decade. Yeah, well, I mean when did the
- 7:44Speaker 1: Sex in the City movie come out? Was he in
- 7:46Speaker 1: the Sex in the City movie? Yeah? The first one
- 7:50Speaker 1: when Carrie is doing her Vogue Bridle shoot, He's sitting
- 7:55Speaker 1: behind the cameras in full regalia. I didn't remember, so
- 8:00Speaker 1: I did so much weed. Anyways, my point is it's
- 8:03Speaker 1: a great introduction to the breadth of his work, so
- 8:05Speaker 1: definitely go check it out. Um, what did you watch
- 8:07Speaker 1: this weekend? Rose? Um? I had been seeing some tweets
- 8:11Speaker 1: about this new sitcom, Abbott Elementary that's on Hulu and
- 8:16Speaker 1: watched the four episodes that are out. It's so cute
- 8:20Speaker 1: and so funny. It's like Parks and rec style, like mockumentary,
- 8:25Speaker 1: you know, like The Office, and it's about teachers at
- 8:29Speaker 1: a public elementary school in Philly, like a school that's
- 8:33Speaker 1: really underfunded. And I have not laughed out loud like
- 8:38Speaker 1: that watching a TV show in a very long time.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It's so sweet and funny, kind of the same way
- 8:44Speaker 1: Parks and Wreck was, where it's like about good people
- 8:47Speaker 1: trying to do good things within a bad system. So
- 8:51Speaker 1: I really liked that. And then last night I watched
- 8:55Speaker 1: The Kill did Age on a trio. Max Fellows is
- 9:00Speaker 1: new period drama Julian Fellas, who created Downton Abbey. Oh wow,
- 9:05Speaker 1: I didn't realize it as him. Yeah. I mean, well,
- 9:07Speaker 1: that's why you know everyone was so excited about it
- 9:09Speaker 1: and that it has this pedigree because you know it's
- 9:12Speaker 1: by the creator of Downton Abbey, who is like the
- 9:15Speaker 1: king of campy period dramas currently. I it was pretty boring. Um.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I did zone out for a lot of it. Some
- 9:28Speaker 1: good performances, you know. Love seeing the girls Christine Brand's case,
- 9:32Speaker 1: Cynthia Nixon. Um, I wonder how many episodes it will
- 9:35Speaker 1: take for Cynthia to get like a gender queer chimney
- 9:38Speaker 1: sweep under under her hoop skirt named commodore adeas. Yeah,
- 9:44Speaker 1: Harry Coon, who plays the like new rich woman who
- 9:50Speaker 1: is trying to like enter the world of old money.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I thought was very good. Um. And I also found
- 9:57Speaker 1: off that she was in one of the Avengers movies,
- 10:00Speaker 1: so that's we love to see the range. There was
- 10:03Speaker 1: gay stuff. I don't know if you made it to
- 10:05Speaker 1: the end. I mean, of course they're not going to
- 10:08Speaker 1: bring on to Cynthia without giving us some gay stuff. No,
- 10:11Speaker 1: it wasn't Cynthia was it was gay guys, gay guys. Okay,
- 10:18Speaker 1: I just have to say quickly. Unfortunately I started to
- 10:22Speaker 1: watch it after, you know, we were texting about it,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and I do not know if Christine Branski and our
- 10:27Speaker 1: girl Cynthia, as much as they're two of my favorite
- 10:30Speaker 1: people in Hollywood, are like not enough to get me
- 10:34Speaker 1: to watch what is like a very lukewarm period It's
- 10:38Speaker 1: not your kind of show. I'm not you are a
- 10:41Speaker 1: period drama girl. I know it takes a lot to
- 10:44Speaker 1: get me two things. These heights. Yeah, it digs a
- 10:49Speaker 1: lot for me to get there. But I would have
- 10:51Speaker 1: finished the episode if that guy that I sent you
- 10:54Speaker 1: the voice membo about didn't come over, And while I
- 10:56Speaker 1: was he came over. He did. He did come over.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Unfortunate for the too you that don't know there's this
- 11:02Speaker 1: guy that I slept with like over a year ago.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Who who would be the ones who did? Know? Of
- 11:08Speaker 1: listeners people that listen to Food for Thought. So so
- 11:12Speaker 1: I forgot that you have another podcast. You forgot that
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm cheating on you with with another podcast actually, like, actually,
- 11:19Speaker 1: you're cheating on them with me. You're the miss, I'm
- 11:21Speaker 1: the other woman. I love that. I love Obsessed. Um,
- 11:25Speaker 1: but the Obsessed starring Beyonce, which I've never seen and
- 11:28Speaker 1: we need to do an episode on soon. Yeah but anyways, Um.
- 11:32Speaker 1: The cliff notes on this guy, which no one cares about,
- 11:35Speaker 1: are just that it was like one of the worst
- 11:37Speaker 1: most media grew dates I've ever been on over a
- 11:39Speaker 1: year ago, and in the meantime he has slid into
- 11:41Speaker 1: my d M. S tas. That's the guy who ordered
- 11:43Speaker 1: Indian food to your house. This is the guy that
- 11:45Speaker 1: took me out and he was like, let's go get
- 11:47Speaker 1: Indian food, didn't ask me what I wanted. Yeah, girl,
- 11:51Speaker 1: he's really hot. He looks like so there's so many
- 11:57Speaker 1: hot men, like like like Disney cartoon Tarzan. He is
- 12:01Speaker 1: so hot. He's like the like manifestation of like so
- 12:05Speaker 1: many of like my erotic Okay, that's that's fine for
- 12:08Speaker 1: you to keep having sex with him, you just need
- 12:11Speaker 1: to do less. I made a decree last night, and
- 12:14Speaker 1: that is we're not douching anymore. We are doing the
- 12:19Speaker 1: bare minimum for our partners. If that they don't know
- 12:23Speaker 1: if they don't want us, if they don't want us hairy,
- 12:26Speaker 1: sweaty and full of ship, then they don't want us
- 12:29Speaker 1: at all. Yeah, fool me once, Shame on you fool
- 12:32Speaker 1: me twice. I can't read and I have no critical
- 12:35Speaker 1: thinking skills, so you know it would make sense that
- 12:37Speaker 1: you would fool me a second time. Like I said
- 12:39Speaker 1: to the children I used to nanny when I gave
- 12:41Speaker 1: them apples instead of cookies. You get what you get
- 12:44Speaker 1: and you don't get upset. And then after that I
- 12:47Speaker 1: would steal crates of pellegrino from their parents kitchen cupboard
- 12:52Speaker 1: and take them home before the parents got back to
- 12:55Speaker 1: the house. Look, you get what you get, you get,
- 12:58Speaker 1: you don't get upset. But it's so true because you
- 13:00Speaker 1: have free pellegrino. It's so true. And I wish I
- 13:03Speaker 1: had free pellogreno because last night I got buffed and puffed.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I douched for way too long. And let me tell you,
- 13:10Speaker 1: this guy was like three hours like I felt like
- 13:13Speaker 1: I was humiliated. Um, but yeah, it's humiliating. And let
- 13:19Speaker 1: me tell you, the year old gaze on the Gilded
- 13:22Speaker 1: Age were certainly not douching, and they were doing, but yes'
- 13:27Speaker 1: and sure they had like maids and like ballots and
- 13:30Speaker 1: stuff to clean up after them. They weren't, you know,
- 13:33Speaker 1: washing their own soiled sheets. But but we have made
- 13:38Speaker 1: do for centuries millennia without douching. Agreed. But that said,
- 13:44Speaker 1: he did leave at one am, and I was so
- 13:46Speaker 1: hungry that I drove and got my very first on
- 13:50Speaker 1: my own, my very first on my own fast food
- 13:53Speaker 1: drive through. I went to Wendy's. It was the only
- 13:57Speaker 1: thing that was not a Wendy's Girl, It was only
- 13:58Speaker 1: that was open near me. And I do love me
- 14:01Speaker 1: a spicy chicken club. I ate two of them, and
- 14:03Speaker 1: I'm paying for it this morning. Let me tell you
- 14:06Speaker 1: this has taken a turn. Um we have to touch
- 14:11Speaker 1: briefly maybe on this week's And just like that in
- 14:16Speaker 1: which Miranda finally left Steve for Ja Daz, which solidified
- 14:23Speaker 1: her status as the villain of and just like that
- 14:26Speaker 1: kind of yeah, like that's not even like cray perbole,
- 14:30Speaker 1: Like she really is off her rocker in a way
- 14:33Speaker 1: that is relatable. Like who among us has not in
- 14:36Speaker 1: a manic episode booked a flight to get some long
- 14:40Speaker 1: distance dick? I haven't you've never done? Would I would
- 14:44Speaker 1: never travel for a man, or or them or a woman.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I've traveled for anyone for a long distance at least twice, really,
- 14:52Speaker 1: at least twice. Maybe we need to free you of
- 14:54Speaker 1: the shackles of testosterone. Yeah, I mean I kind of
- 14:58Speaker 1: agree with that. But poor Steve, Poor Steve, Poor Steve.
- 15:02Speaker 1: But you know what, like honestly, he will have a
- 15:04Speaker 1: new girlfriend in a week and Miranda will be left
- 15:10Speaker 1: by Chay in a couple of days. Yeah, it's it's true.
- 15:15Speaker 1: The scene between the two of them was so gorgeous.
- 15:19Speaker 1: I mean it was gorgeously lit. First of all, just
- 15:21Speaker 1: the lighting in this scene like draped behind them, this
- 15:25Speaker 1: like golden like aura of light in their breakup was
- 15:29Speaker 1: like so beautifully stage. I thought the conversation was so
- 15:32Speaker 1: well written. Like I know, we dragged like m p
- 15:34Speaker 1: K and everything that has gone down to the season,
- 15:37Speaker 1: but I felt that the breakup really stuck the landing.
- 15:41Speaker 1: As hard as it was to watch, it was like
- 15:43Speaker 1: a very real because it leaned into Miranda being awful.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Yeah it did, it did. But like Steve's final plea
- 15:51Speaker 1: was perfect, It was exactly but it wasn't. But it
- 15:54Speaker 1: wasn't a plea, which is why I liked it. Yeah,
- 15:58Speaker 1: I've been fighting for us and I'm not going to anymore.
- 16:01Speaker 1: That's so t it's it's it's the thing that she
- 16:04Speaker 1: needed to hear. And I have a feeling that those
- 16:07Speaker 1: words she's not hearing them now, but they're going to
- 16:09Speaker 1: haunt her later, you know what I mean? Yeah, because
- 16:12Speaker 1: Jay is a fuck they and is going to break
- 16:15Speaker 1: her heart. So, as I mentioned earlier, I paid for
- 16:20Speaker 1: season fourteen of America's Next Top Model because I wanted
- 16:23Speaker 1: to watch Andre Leon tally season. I also have never
- 16:26Speaker 1: watched a full season of America's Next Top Model. You
- 16:29Speaker 1: need to go back and watch one of the earlier seasons.
- 16:31Speaker 1: So I'm going to start from one because I started
- 16:34Speaker 1: to watch fourteen. One is okay too? Is Oh my god.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'm definitely gonna Sandy if real ones no Shandy Jowanna.
- 16:42Speaker 1: The girls, the girls were girling. I know I'm going
- 16:44Speaker 1: to watch the first four or five seasons because Tiffany obviously, um,
- 16:48Speaker 1: but like, I have no regrets about my choice as
- 16:51Speaker 1: fourteen for an entry point, the array of girls they
- 16:54Speaker 1: have on this season. There's this girl named Brenda. She
- 16:58Speaker 1: says she's looking for biological father. She showed up on
- 17:02Speaker 1: her father's doorstep. Her father says, I'm not your dad
- 17:06Speaker 1: completely rejects her. She used that this happens on America's
- 17:10Speaker 1: next toime on America's Next Top Model, Like, does she
- 17:13Speaker 1: go to his house for ghost season? No, she and
- 17:17Speaker 1: she unless the help of her cop boyfriend to find
- 17:19Speaker 1: her biological father, which sounds illegal. Sally Hershberger chops fifteen
- 17:25Speaker 1: inches of hair off this girl into like a red
- 17:28Speaker 1: bob and she like cries through all of it. Oh
- 17:31Speaker 1: my god. The makeover episodes are always so good. There
- 17:34Speaker 1: used to be I don't know if it exists anymore.
- 17:36Speaker 1: A YouTube compilation that is just every makeover from America's
- 17:39Speaker 1: Next Top Model, all seasons. I'm sure I have to
- 17:42Speaker 1: watch that. I will sometimes go back and just watch
- 17:45Speaker 1: the makeover episodes from earlier seasons, or like, if I'm
- 17:48Speaker 1: trying to figure out if I want to watch a
- 17:49Speaker 1: certain season of Top Model, I will just watch episode three,
- 17:53Speaker 1: which is the makeover episode. It's the best. The things
- 17:57Speaker 1: Tyra did to these girls emotional terrible. Some I mean
- 18:00Speaker 1: we'll get into it in the episode. But with this season, specifically,
- 18:03Speaker 1: they chopped this girl's hair off and she like sobs uncontrollably,
- 18:07Speaker 1: and all the girls immediately start making fun of her
- 18:09Speaker 1: in the house. They say that she looks like Miranda
- 18:13Speaker 1: from Sex in the City. That's not an insult, it's
- 18:16Speaker 1: a compliment. But like the girl brandas like that her
- 18:19Speaker 1: my feelings. That's not nice, like because in this time
- 18:23Speaker 1: no one wanted to be the girls make fund and
- 18:25Speaker 1: then everyone wanted to be the Miranda, and now we've
- 18:28Speaker 1: swung back around to exactly one wants to be the Miranda.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Culture really is a full circle. The pendulum always swings back.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Speaking of which, this was the season where the girls
- 18:39Speaker 1: walked down a catwalk with a huge swinging pendulum that
- 18:43Speaker 1: hits them as they walked on the runway and amazing,
- 18:46Speaker 1: it's giving legends of the hidden Temple. She had very
- 18:49Speaker 1: Indiana jokes, But basically, this girl's real kuled so bad
- 18:52Speaker 1: that Sally Hershberger comes back to the house to cut
- 18:55Speaker 1: her hair again. I want to Sally Hershberger hair cut.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I mean it starts at like thousands of dollars. I'm sure,
- 19:01Speaker 1: Fran should I get bangs? I have told you that
- 19:05Speaker 1: you should get curtain bangs. I think it would be
- 19:07Speaker 1: very No. I got Curtain Banks last year. I'm not
- 19:10Speaker 1: doing it, Phoebe. Should I get bangs? Virgins? This is
- 19:12Speaker 1: your action item for this week. If you think I
- 19:15Speaker 1: should get bangs, tweeted us and let us know. So.
- 19:29Speaker 1: I tweeted something recently that made our guest Joel Kim
- 19:32Speaker 1: Booster side into my g M s to start a
- 19:35Speaker 1: fight because I tweeted that Captain America the Winter Soldier
- 19:41Speaker 1: is the gayest Marvel movie, and Joel, you disagree. Um,
- 19:45Speaker 1: it's not that necessarily that I disagree. It's that I
- 19:48Speaker 1: totally get it. Like the vibes between Bucket and Steve
- 19:52Speaker 1: Rodgers are like pretty like almost text like it's not
- 19:56Speaker 1: even subtexts, like it's there. I get that. Um, I
- 19:59Speaker 1: do think that, like in spirit though, there are gayer options,
- 20:03Speaker 1: like I think some of the Thorn movies are a
- 20:05Speaker 1: little bit gayer. Is there is there a specific one?
- 20:08Speaker 1: I think Ragnarok? I agree? I agree. I mean Kate
- 20:12Speaker 1: Blanchet's presence alone makes it one of the gayest, even
- 20:16Speaker 1: though the majority of her presence is like c G
- 20:18Speaker 1: I like, but everything else she does. But you were
- 20:22Speaker 1: saying that you don't like you didn't like Ragnarok and
- 20:24Speaker 1: you just like her performance in it. This is honestly,
- 20:27Speaker 1: I have like a middling reaction to a lot of
- 20:30Speaker 1: Marvel movies because I'm watching them in the wrong context.
- 20:33Speaker 1: So I try and watching Ragnarok on a plane, which
- 20:36Speaker 1: is just not It's not how I wanted to watch it.
- 20:38Speaker 1: So I actually rewatched it this week because I was like, well,
- 20:42Speaker 1: what is this? And I do feel like maybe next
- 20:45Speaker 1: to like some Spider Man, maybe even the most recent
- 20:46Speaker 1: Spider Man movie, which I think is very gay. I
- 20:48Speaker 1: agree like Ragnarak had so many things about it that
- 20:51Speaker 1: I felt we're kind of queer, and like Thor himself
- 20:54Speaker 1: like gives like a there there's there's something really like
- 20:59Speaker 1: homoerotic and like makes me hard when they strap him
- 21:02Speaker 1: down and shave his head. That is there. It is
- 21:06Speaker 1: like the beginning. It is the it is the beginning
- 21:09Speaker 1: of slash fiction. We speaking, it's the scene that launched
- 21:12Speaker 1: a million flash I mean speaking of slash fan fiction.
- 21:15Speaker 1: And four like a lot of it is about Thor
- 21:17Speaker 1: and Loki. Yeah fake incest and Loki is actually textual.
- 21:22Speaker 1: They're queer according to yes, yeah yeah, and also they're
- 21:26Speaker 1: not really blood related And this is one of my
- 21:29Speaker 1: hottest and least well received takes ever. But gay people
- 21:33Speaker 1: should be allowed to do incest. Okay, lateral incested here,
- 21:37Speaker 1: lateral incests, brothers, cousins, yes, anything with a power differential
- 21:43Speaker 1: of course. No, But I just feel like, literally, the
- 21:51Speaker 1: only real problem with incest is inbreeding. And that's that's
- 21:56Speaker 1: not the problem. It's the only problem, literally, And like
- 21:59Speaker 1: you could even ask the question, like, is it incest
- 22:02Speaker 1: if you're gay? You know what I mean? Like you
- 22:04Speaker 1: could ask that question, but that is maybe not a
- 22:08Speaker 1: question this podcast that we started to open us right up.
- 22:14Speaker 1: So Joel, you I even like, just from a like
- 22:18Speaker 1: kind of peripheral like view of your um like internet presence,
- 22:24Speaker 1: I think I wouldn't understand that you were into sort
- 22:26Speaker 1: of like geeky comic bookie stuff. I am. Yes, I'm
- 22:31Speaker 1: a geek, I'm a gamer, I'm a nerd. I'm all
- 22:35Speaker 1: the things anything genre related. I'm pretty much down for.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Especially comic books really was my entry point for a
- 22:42Speaker 1: lot of culture when I was growing up. I started
- 22:44Speaker 1: collecting comic books when I was nine. Um, I own
- 22:47Speaker 1: like thousands at this point, and where are they? They're
- 22:50Speaker 1: all in a half of them are in a stoge
- 22:52Speaker 1: unit in New York and half of them are somewhere
- 22:54Speaker 1: in my mom's new house in Chicago. Are they in
- 22:57Speaker 1: a carry Bradshaw's size storage unit? Like different very teeny,
- 23:02Speaker 1: very teeny tiny um, And like I haven't actually stopped
- 23:06Speaker 1: buying them regularly, like um, several like probably went sometimes
- 23:10Speaker 1: at some point when I was living in New York.
- 23:11Speaker 1: But it is still like I I love the lore
- 23:17Speaker 1: and I love like the continuity, especially which is it's
- 23:20Speaker 1: funny because we'll talk a little bit. I think we'll
- 23:22Speaker 1: get into it. I think that the m c U
- 23:24Speaker 1: is sort of suffering from the connective tissue that it's
- 23:27Speaker 1: forced itself into a little bit because the comic books
- 23:30Speaker 1: do not care about continuity. They do and they don't.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I think that like there's a little bit more freedom
- 23:37Speaker 1: um in comic books. But like famously, like they started
- 23:41Speaker 1: to care about continuity in a big way in the eighties,
- 23:44Speaker 1: especially like DC Comics basically did a whole event called
- 23:47Speaker 1: Crisis on Infinite Nurse where they were like all of
- 23:50Speaker 1: these different threads of like wait a minute, the huntresses
- 23:53Speaker 1: Batman's daughter in this version, but she's not in this version,
- 23:55Speaker 1: and they basically just did what Marvel is doing right now,
- 23:58Speaker 1: which is saying like, oh, there's some multiverse and then
- 24:00Speaker 1: they destroyed the multiverse and squished it all into one.
- 24:04Speaker 1: And and that's for you know, decades, was what the
- 24:07Speaker 1: continuity that DC was working off of. And Marvel has
- 24:09Speaker 1: done a few of those events themselves. They've like killed
- 24:12Speaker 1: the Avengers and the Avengers came back. In fact, one
- 24:14Speaker 1: of the earliest comic books I ever bought was the
- 24:17Speaker 1: rebooted Avengers book where they brought them all back to
- 24:20Speaker 1: life and like kind of restarted a lot of the
- 24:22Speaker 1: continuity in a way. Did you have a favorite team
- 24:26Speaker 1: or so this is gonna automatically people will sort of
- 24:31Speaker 1: take what I'm saying about the m c U a
- 24:32Speaker 1: little bit less seriously when I say this, But I
- 24:34Speaker 1: am a d C boy. The first comic book I
- 24:39Speaker 1: ever bought was a Justice League comic book. Um, and
- 24:42Speaker 1: I've always been like, I think the iconography of d
- 24:45Speaker 1: C and sort of the maximalism of d C is
- 24:48Speaker 1: more appealing to me as as like somebody who if
- 24:50Speaker 1: I'm going to read a superhero story, like I want
- 24:52Speaker 1: gods and icons, like I don't necessarily need like street
- 24:55Speaker 1: level like realism with when it comes to superheroes U
- 25:00Speaker 1: and I think DC does that better. Obviously, they're far
- 25:02Speaker 1: less successful in the movie space than than Marvel has
- 25:06Speaker 1: been because of the tone that they can't find in
- 25:09Speaker 1: certain ways. But I do think what DC is doing
- 25:12Speaker 1: now where they have the ability to do something Marvel can't,
- 25:16Speaker 1: which is have these extremely totally different projects, um, whereas Marvel,
- 25:22Speaker 1: like everything kind of has to ultimately fit back within
- 25:26Speaker 1: the Marvel formula, and DC can do something like have
- 25:29Speaker 1: the Suicide Squad and Justice League and well that's that
- 25:33Speaker 1: was a decision that they came to relatively recently. In fact,
- 25:37Speaker 1: they came out and said basically after Justice League flopped,
- 25:40Speaker 1: and um, they were like, but we're actually doing like
- 25:44Speaker 1: a soft connected universe. But I think on your face
- 25:49Speaker 1: right now, I think I d F queen um Gaga
- 25:52Speaker 1: dot iseah know she is um, I think one of
- 25:58Speaker 1: the definitions right now of star nut actress. Oh she is,
- 26:03Speaker 1: she is Lady Rock. She is. She is beautiful and
- 26:07Speaker 1: charismatic and like Pops on screen, but like there, she's
- 26:10Speaker 1: not a good actor, but she can sell. Can't we
- 26:13Speaker 1: just be her? Deep character work and murder on the Nile.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Oh my god, even in the trailer movie coming out
- 26:19Speaker 1: and the new trailer that's been recut around Army, who
- 26:23Speaker 1: is a major character in the movie. Yeah, I do
- 26:26Speaker 1: kind of want to see the will not train wreck
- 26:28Speaker 1: boat wreck that will be yea, Yeah, for sure. I
- 26:31Speaker 1: want to know a little bit about like your comic
- 26:32Speaker 1: book upbringing. But before we go there, I actually think
- 26:35Speaker 1: maybe to contextualize for the actual True Virgins, Slash producer
- 26:38Speaker 1: Phoebe hasn't really seen any of the Marvel movies. So
- 26:41Speaker 1: for someone who hasn't been inducted into this cinematic universe,
- 26:45Speaker 1: how would you describe Obviously they're like what twenty seven
- 26:48Speaker 1: movies or whatever they start with iron iron Man techno,
- 26:51Speaker 1: how would you describe how these wine together, like for
- 26:55Speaker 1: someone who has maybe never seen them before war propaganda
- 26:58Speaker 1: with good jokes yea, literally though, Yeah, I think it
- 27:02Speaker 1: was the like the first time since the Joel Schumacher
- 27:06Speaker 1: Batman movies where they were like, oh, this is kind
- 27:09Speaker 1: of this can be silly, but then they were like
- 27:11Speaker 1: but not campy. And then and so they sort of
- 27:14Speaker 1: like they took the note and we're like, Okay, people
- 27:17Speaker 1: like it when they're fun because they're superhero movies, but
- 27:20Speaker 1: it has to always be like self deprecating and like
- 27:23Speaker 1: a little in on the joke um, which is why
- 27:27Speaker 1: cam and and the thing is they were really smart
- 27:29Speaker 1: to start the franchise a with something a character like
- 27:34Speaker 1: iron Man, who is the stakes are low going in
- 27:37Speaker 1: like people who like comic books know who iron Man is.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Like iron Man, He's had cartoons, you know, he's shown
- 27:42Speaker 1: up in other media, but like the culture writ large
- 27:46Speaker 1: was not like it's not Batman, it's not Superman, it's
- 27:49Speaker 1: not the X Men. Like they dip their toes in
- 27:52Speaker 1: with a character that if it failed, it wasn't going
- 27:55Speaker 1: to be like a huge i P. Disaster for them
- 27:57Speaker 1: because it's iron Man, you know. And and they think
- 27:59Speaker 1: that's why it was even because it was such a
- 28:01Speaker 1: huge success, it was even it was able to sort
- 28:05Speaker 1: of launch the m c U in a big way
- 28:07Speaker 1: because they were like, oh, we can take risks with
- 28:09Speaker 1: these relatively sort of like I would say, iron Man
- 28:12Speaker 1: at the time, even though he's been a huge presence
- 28:15Speaker 1: on the Avengers in the comic books for years and
- 28:17Speaker 1: years and years, is not an a list character. I
- 28:21Speaker 1: think it also like iron Man made a lot of
- 28:23Speaker 1: sense for the like cultural context of the time, because
- 28:27Speaker 1: like you're thinking about the entertainment landscape, which is like,
- 28:31Speaker 1: you haven't really had a good superhero movie since what
- 28:34Speaker 1: X two, Um, the Batman movies the right, okay, the
- 28:37Speaker 1: Batman movies. And also like I think iron Man makes
- 28:40Speaker 1: a lot of sense as a post nine eleven superhero, absolutely,
- 28:44Speaker 1: and that first movie is so post nine eleven, and
- 28:47Speaker 1: and and I think the smartest decision they ever made,
- 28:49Speaker 1: and the thing that really separates the successful m c
- 28:52Speaker 1: U movies from the non successful m CU movies is
- 28:55Speaker 1: casting Robert Downey Jr. Because here's the thing, especially as
- 28:58Speaker 1: we go on with the m c U, as they
- 29:00Speaker 1: start to build on them, you really start to realize
- 29:03Speaker 1: that these movies, because they're so formulaic, and because they
- 29:06Speaker 1: become very similar in tone and theme and visually, there's
- 29:10Speaker 1: a the house style that the m c U has.
- 29:13Speaker 1: If it's not anchored by an actual star, they do
- 29:17Speaker 1: not work. Okay, Well, who do you think is is
- 29:20Speaker 1: well cast? I think Robert Downey Jr. I think that
- 29:23Speaker 1: I think the actual the original cast of the Avengers,
- 29:25Speaker 1: the original core Avengers cast. I think they're all stars
- 29:29Speaker 1: eating Jeremy Renner. That's the one I was forgetting. Jeremy
- 29:33Speaker 1: Renner not a star um and and Mark Rufflo is
- 29:37Speaker 1: probably on the bubble, but I think he acquits himself
- 29:39Speaker 1: well and especially well there's a reason why there was
- 29:43Speaker 1: never a solo Hulk film. There was though, but not
- 29:46Speaker 1: with him, and that's technically a part of the m C.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Tyler and um I think it's I totally agree. I
- 29:55Speaker 1: feel like like it's grounded in these kind of very
- 29:59Speaker 1: speci a fick and singular performances. And I feel like
- 30:02Speaker 1: Robert Downey Jr. At the time, like that was kind
- 30:04Speaker 1: of his comeback as an actor, in addition to like
- 30:08Speaker 1: the comeback of Iron Man, who no one really knew about,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and Marvel too, because here's the thing, beyond the X
- 30:12Speaker 1: Men movies, Marvel had never had like a good Big
- 30:17Speaker 1: or Spiderman too, obviously, but like they never like really
- 30:20Speaker 1: had a hit as like a solo with a solo
- 30:23Speaker 1: superhero other than Spiderman and the X Men, because those
- 30:25Speaker 1: are huge, obviously recognizable properties. But like it's interesting because
- 30:29Speaker 1: like you look at movies like Captain Marvel, which I
- 30:32Speaker 1: don't think is the greatest movie, um and it's and listen.
- 30:36Speaker 1: I think Bree Larson is an amazing actress. I think
- 30:39Speaker 1: she has was amazing in Room. She deserved that Oscar like,
- 30:44Speaker 1: but there's a difference between being a star and an actress.
- 30:46Speaker 1: And I do not think she has the charisma necessary
- 30:49Speaker 1: to lead a Marvel movie, especially one where the character
- 30:53Speaker 1: is such a cipher that, like you really need an
- 30:56Speaker 1: actor who can fill in the blanks of that because
- 31:00Speaker 1: the whole point of that character is that she doesn't
- 31:03Speaker 1: have a personality and she doesn't remember her personality. And
- 31:07Speaker 1: if you had cast somebody like Emily Blunt, oh, I
- 31:11Speaker 1: want to watch that, Like, I think it would have
- 31:13Speaker 1: really been a much stronger movie because someone like that
- 31:17Speaker 1: can really sort of imbue the character and sort of
- 31:20Speaker 1: like give you, you you know, someone who's going to make choices.
- 31:23Speaker 1: They also have to they have to like crack jokes too,
- 31:26Speaker 1: you know, and that to be funny. It really like
- 31:28Speaker 1: comedies such an essential part of all of it pulled together.
- 31:31Speaker 1: But like, I see why Patty Harrison should be in that.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I do see the thinking behind Captain Marvel or whatever,
- 31:37Speaker 1: because it's like they love throwing in you know, a
- 31:39Speaker 1: Katherine Han, a Julia Louis Trifus, like Florence Welt. They
- 31:43Speaker 1: love throwing people that actually already feels kind of like
- 31:51Speaker 1: part of it, So Florence View. But like, yeah, it's
- 31:53Speaker 1: like these these Oscar nominated actresses or like actresses that
- 31:57Speaker 1: give performances that also have a very singular sense of
- 31:59Speaker 1: humans ry like kind of like the way they cast
- 32:01Speaker 1: the professors on Harry Potter. Yes, it's also counterintuitive, like
- 32:05Speaker 1: you wouldn't think of a Katherine Haunt in a super
- 32:07Speaker 1: hero movie. And they love to cast that way, which
- 32:10Speaker 1: I think is they love to lure in, you know,
- 32:14Speaker 1: these prestige actresses and then make them be the girlfriends
- 32:17Speaker 1: um in a really like they're like, hey, do you
- 32:20Speaker 1: want a couple million dollars so you can buy your
- 32:23Speaker 1: summer house? And they're like sure, yeah, I mean why not,
- 32:26Speaker 1: I'll do like Rachel McAdams, I'll do two weeks on
- 32:29Speaker 1: Captain Doctor Strange. Like sure, like that's totally fine. I
- 32:33Speaker 1: have herforman scene Doctor Strange. It's really fun, get really
- 32:36Speaker 1: stoned to eat a little bar of mushroom chocolate. I'm
- 32:41Speaker 1: never doing the mushrooms. I think Tilda is hard to watch. You.
- 32:46Speaker 1: I don't hate it. I don't hate it. I know
- 32:48Speaker 1: that's problematic and I get it, and like, um, my
- 32:51Speaker 1: good friend Mark Petrow has every reason to be mad
- 32:55Speaker 1: about But I do think that like it is a
- 32:59Speaker 1: good one. I think Bennet at Cumberbatch is a star
- 33:01Speaker 1: and and can anchor them. I went into that movie
- 33:03Speaker 1: thinking that I was gonna love Tilda and it came
- 33:06Speaker 1: out of it being like Benedict was that girl, you
- 33:08Speaker 1: know what I mean? Um, but you were talking about
- 33:09Speaker 1: prestige actresses or whatever, and like random girlfriends in the
- 33:12Speaker 1: m c U. Are there like stars that have been
- 33:15Speaker 1: cast as Anselar characters and the m CU that you
- 33:18Speaker 1: really wish would come into the cinematic universe and like
- 33:22Speaker 1: get their own superhero movie or something like that. Um. Yeah.
- 33:24Speaker 1: And I think the biggest example of this, and one
- 33:27Speaker 1: of my favorite sort of like under storylines is Lupita
- 33:31Speaker 1: And so like Lupida in Black Panther is amazing, and
- 33:35Speaker 1: Black Panther is definitely top five like one of the
- 33:38Speaker 1: best m CU movies for sure, like stylistically, like it
- 33:41Speaker 1: is one of the ones that is like within the
- 33:43Speaker 1: voice and tone and how style of the m c U,
- 33:46Speaker 1: but does manage to make some choices that like set
- 33:49Speaker 1: it apart. But my favorite thing is is that, like
- 33:51Speaker 1: when it came to The Avengers, Lupia was like, yeah, no,
- 33:55Speaker 1: actually I think I'm gonna do an off Broadway play
- 33:57Speaker 1: um instead, Like I I wish I could be a
- 34:00Speaker 1: fly on the wall in like listening to her agents
- 34:02Speaker 1: explained to Kevin Figy, like yeah, I know that, like
- 34:07Speaker 1: every single other actor that has ever appeared in a
- 34:11Speaker 1: Marvel movie is going to be in Endgame, But Lupida
- 34:15Speaker 1: wants to do a play at Playwrights Horizons. She pulled
- 34:20Speaker 1: at Kim Control, she really did, and it doesn't make
- 34:23Speaker 1: any sense that she's not in that movie. Which of
- 34:26Speaker 1: the Sex and the City actresses do you think would
- 34:29Speaker 1: best fit into them? See you? I weirdly think Cynthia, Okay,
- 34:38Speaker 1: what in a sort of like well, I mean basically
- 34:41Speaker 1: I'm thinking of a net and Captain Marvel. I mean,
- 34:43Speaker 1: what a wasted opportunity. Glenn in um in the Guardians
- 34:47Speaker 1: of the Galaxy, like they're they're they're getting them minimum
- 34:50Speaker 1: Glenn close and Guardians of the Galaxy, right yea, Rachel,
- 34:54Speaker 1: I mean Rachel McAdams, Rachel McAdams russo the time that
- 34:59Speaker 1: she plays a time traveler's wife or girlfriend. Yeah, oh,
- 35:02Speaker 1: I should say the other person they couldn't get back
- 35:04Speaker 1: for Infinity War, who was also Prestigie. They lured back
- 35:06Speaker 1: with a more interesting part, Natalie Portman. Now, I was
- 35:10Speaker 1: so excited Natalie Portman who said, I will give you
- 35:13Speaker 1: one day of reshoots on Infinity War, and otherwise you
- 35:16Speaker 1: have to c g I that fucking raccoon into existing
- 35:20Speaker 1: footage because I will not. Literally, the one scene that
- 35:23Speaker 1: she shot for Infinity War is a scene of her
- 35:26Speaker 1: in the hallway walking into the room, and everything else
- 35:29Speaker 1: is existing footage from that that didn't make it into
- 35:33Speaker 1: the movie. Yeah, you can understand why Gwen had no
- 35:35Speaker 1: idea that she was in any It's like they just
- 35:37Speaker 1: they don't even tell. Yeah, they don't really tell. Yeah,
- 35:39Speaker 1: the funeral just show up at a at a like
- 35:42Speaker 1: at a sound stage in front of a green screen,
- 35:44Speaker 1: stand there for like a couple of minutes and they're like, okay,
- 35:47Speaker 1: by yeah, I can't even remember who it was, but
- 35:49Speaker 1: somebody who was at the Tony Stark funeral scene. They
- 35:52Speaker 1: didn't tell them, like most of them could put two
- 35:54Speaker 1: and two together about whose funeral they were at, but
- 35:57Speaker 1: a lot of them didn't know who they were mourning.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Um is insane. You think a lot about how like
- 36:06Speaker 1: I mean, the way they wind these movies together. A
- 36:08Speaker 1: lot of it has to do with that post credit scene.
- 36:10Speaker 1: It's like, how do they when they film those, They
- 36:13Speaker 1: probably don't give a kind of context into how these
- 36:16Speaker 1: they create these like many even what must that be
- 36:18Speaker 1: like as an actor to to have someone say, okay,
- 36:22Speaker 1: react to this, but you don't know what this is.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Also side tangent, the experience of sitting in the movie
- 36:29Speaker 1: theater and waiting after the credits, and then waiting a
- 36:32Speaker 1: second time for the post credits. It's a humilium like
- 36:35Speaker 1: what happened with Spider Man. I waited for the second
- 36:38Speaker 1: post credit scene, and it was just the Doctor Strange
- 36:40Speaker 1: trailer that I had already that really made that really
- 36:44Speaker 1: made me mad. Um like baby, I saw that on Twitter. Yeah.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I just think that some of the movies that have
- 36:51Speaker 1: come out recently are actually hindered by their the need
- 36:54Speaker 1: to connect them to the larger I know, I wish
- 36:57Speaker 1: because that was such a problem for me with wand
- 36:59Speaker 1: of it and we're now like a year out from
- 37:02Speaker 1: when One Division really took over the culture. Um, it
- 37:06Speaker 1: was so great, and then like for the whole thing
- 37:08Speaker 1: because it felt so fresh and disconnected. And then you
- 37:13Speaker 1: come when with the finale, which has to fit itself
- 37:15Speaker 1: back into the Marvel formula and lead you back into
- 37:19Speaker 1: the broader story. And I really think it, like it
- 37:23Speaker 1: kind of trashed all of the storytelling because they had
- 37:26Speaker 1: they had really put story first for the whole series.
- 37:29Speaker 1: And then it just ends in like you know, a
- 37:31Speaker 1: big C G I battle. You can feel the mandate
- 37:35Speaker 1: on a lot of these things of like you have
- 37:37Speaker 1: these you bring in these amazing writers and these rooms
- 37:40Speaker 1: that create these amazing stories like Wan Division, and then
- 37:43Speaker 1: you can just feel the looming the like email that
- 37:46Speaker 1: they got that was like Ohn, by the way, this
- 37:48Speaker 1: story has to end here and it has to end
- 37:50Speaker 1: this way, and like it just doesn't feel great. Like
- 37:53Speaker 1: I'll say Shanxi, which I really loved. I think I
- 37:57Speaker 1: loved it too, I just watched it. I will say
- 37:59Speaker 1: that the Origin m you movies are now starting to
- 38:02Speaker 1: feel very formulaic in a way that like the beats
- 38:06Speaker 1: are almost all the same. I still enjoy them I
- 38:08Speaker 1: said to somebody, I think to you, even over d M,
- 38:11Speaker 1: I was like, I still will watch every single one
- 38:14Speaker 1: of these Origin movies even though I know exactly how
- 38:16Speaker 1: they will play out beat for beat, because it's like
- 38:19Speaker 1: watching it's like seeing an amazing production of a Midsummer
- 38:22Speaker 1: Night stream where you're like, oh my god, this one's steampunk,
- 38:25Speaker 1: but like it's it's the same story that we know,
- 38:28Speaker 1: but it is fun to see, like, oh, they're gonna
- 38:30Speaker 1: make Titania, you know, a robot in this one, you know,
- 38:34Speaker 1: and like and see how they like remix the formula
- 38:37Speaker 1: a little bit, but you still know, like because Sean
- 38:40Speaker 1: she really is like very similar to Black Panther. It's
- 38:43Speaker 1: very similar in Marvel. It's very similar to a lot
- 38:46Speaker 1: of the Origin movies. Well, I think it's part of
- 38:47Speaker 1: why these these movies are so successful is because you
- 38:51Speaker 1: can show up and just plug yourself in because they're
- 38:54Speaker 1: all such archetypes in a way, and like you can
- 38:57Speaker 1: come in and like not really know about the larger
- 39:01Speaker 1: mythology and just like get it. I think that creates
- 39:04Speaker 1: a differentiation between like who comes to these theaters because
- 39:07Speaker 1: there's like the two of you that are extremely active
- 39:10Speaker 1: like viewers of the movies, and like when the post
- 39:12Speaker 1: credit scene happens, you actually know what's going on. And
- 39:15Speaker 1: then sometimes and then like I didn't know what was
- 39:17Speaker 1: happening in the postcardit scene of Eternals, right, Well, that's
- 39:20Speaker 1: like it's like two Well, it's it depends on like
- 39:22Speaker 1: what order you watch them, right, because nobody watches them
- 39:25Speaker 1: in order really unless you're at the theater like every
- 39:27Speaker 1: single But like with me, it's like I'm such a
- 39:29Speaker 1: passive viewer that like I I'm just like, oh, yeah,
- 39:32Speaker 1: here for the right, here for the formula, which is
- 39:34Speaker 1: why like one division like lit my ass on fire,
- 39:37Speaker 1: because even though it ends on like that formula, it
- 39:40Speaker 1: is so like incredibly different from like what we've seen
- 39:44Speaker 1: before and how it starts. Yeah, and it was also
- 39:46Speaker 1: anchored I think in a way that the Marvel movies
- 39:50Speaker 1: sometimes aren't by like real deeply felt performances by Paul
- 39:55Speaker 1: Batany and Elizabeth Like I really think that none of
- 39:59Speaker 1: the would have worked, and it's it is such a
- 40:01Speaker 1: cheap because like their entire relationship pulled from the comics
- 40:05Speaker 1: and then sort of really shoehorned in, like it really
- 40:08Speaker 1: like you see traces of it in Civil War, you see,
- 40:12Speaker 1: it's like barely begun in um Age of Ultron, and
- 40:17Speaker 1: then by the time we get to end uh Infinity
- 40:20Speaker 1: War or whatever, it's like, Oh, they're in a relationship,
- 40:23Speaker 1: really asked to like investors in that relationship, and you
- 40:27Speaker 1: have to do a lot of work of about understanding
- 40:30Speaker 1: and accepting things that you don't get to see. And
- 40:33Speaker 1: again it's that thing of the really good actor filling
- 40:36Speaker 1: in the blanks emotionally for us, because when we get
- 40:40Speaker 1: to one division, it's like, Okay, like, I'm not that
- 40:43Speaker 1: invested in this relationship. I don't really care. But they
- 40:46Speaker 1: really sold like they filled in the gaps because their
- 40:50Speaker 1: chemistry and the writing and the performances really made that relationship.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Like I was not invested in that relationship at all,
- 40:57Speaker 1: and then by the end of one division, I was like, oh, yeah,
- 41:00Speaker 1: when she does the backbend, you know I was there.
- 41:04Speaker 1: It's all over it. What comic book character who hasn't
- 41:17Speaker 1: been in the m C you yet would you want
- 41:20Speaker 1: to see in it? Squirrel Girl? Squirrel Girl. She is
- 41:26Speaker 1: like a d D D list Marvel character that has
- 41:29Speaker 1: sort of been memed into popularity. I think in recent years.
- 41:32Speaker 1: She in like marveled, marveled like like people. Yeah, like
- 41:36Speaker 1: people are like squirrel Girl iconic and it's like, okay,
- 41:39Speaker 1: but like name one thing that she's as would play
- 41:42Speaker 1: squirrel Girl. Um, I think there was. There's been a
- 41:44Speaker 1: bunch of fan campaigns for like Alison Bree and like
- 41:48Speaker 1: different actresses like Quirk, and I feel like we will
- 41:51Speaker 1: wind up and it's absolutely absolutely she's she's read for something. Yes,
- 41:57Speaker 1: she absolutely has. But like the secrecy is like an interesting,
- 42:01Speaker 1: like weird thing that I think is going to hurt
- 42:03Speaker 1: them as they move forward. I also think that, like
- 42:06Speaker 1: even the stuff that they have done with the Multiverse,
- 42:08Speaker 1: I'm I mean, I'm I cannot wait for Doctor Strange.
- 42:12Speaker 1: I think that would be very interesting. Do you think
- 42:15Speaker 1: we're going to get X men in it, because that's
- 42:18Speaker 1: the big rumor, because James McAvoy and Sophie Turner have
- 42:22Speaker 1: both been spotted with a shaved head and red hair, respectively,
- 42:26Speaker 1: and so the rumor is that because of the success
- 42:30Speaker 1: or like the early success of the insertion of like
- 42:34Speaker 1: the Spider Man into Spider Man, when they did all
- 42:37Speaker 1: of the Doctor Strange reshoots, they went back to reshoot
- 42:40Speaker 1: cameos interesting and maybe that's the way that the X
- 42:44Speaker 1: Men are wind. I would I would rather we we
- 42:46Speaker 1: start over. I would rather we start anew with the
- 42:49Speaker 1: X Men. I think that franchise is a little tired.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Um are you? Are you an X Men girl? I
- 42:56Speaker 1: win the comic books that I did buy from Marvel,
- 42:59Speaker 1: We're all X Men all the time. Like Grant Morrison's
- 43:03Speaker 1: run on X Men is I think amazing. Josh Weeden,
- 43:05Speaker 1: I know, problematic now, but his run with Kitty Kitty
- 43:10Speaker 1: and with the Rocket, oh my god. I mean like
- 43:15Speaker 1: I've cried a lot reading comic books with that, like
- 43:18Speaker 1: really like gets me every time I go and return
- 43:20Speaker 1: to it. If you have astonishing X Men by Joss Weed,
- 43:23Speaker 1: and if you can get over that part, highly we're
- 43:25Speaker 1: gonna been picking up the trade back paperbacks for those
- 43:28Speaker 1: because it is really really well told. X Men definitely
- 43:31Speaker 1: is the thing that got me into superheroes. Like cartoon, no, no,
- 43:35Speaker 1: well the cartoon, yes, the nineties cartoon, but really the
- 43:39Speaker 1: movie and that is like what what restarted superhero culture
- 43:44Speaker 1: in you know, the late nineties. Early X two I
- 43:47Speaker 1: think is one of the best superhero movies. I think
- 43:49Speaker 1: I was saying that before you got here that I
- 43:51Speaker 1: think the best superhero movie. The best X Men movies
- 43:54Speaker 1: are X two and Days the Future paste well, and
- 43:57Speaker 1: I guess Logan if you're if we're counting, I haven't
- 44:00Speaker 1: seen Logan. Logan's fantastic. It is like prestige like X
- 44:05Speaker 1: Men in a in a really delightful way, and I yeah,
- 44:08Speaker 1: I definitely think you should check it out. It's great.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Do you think as a kid, y'all, like caught we're
- 44:13Speaker 1: in on the like latent queer appeal of X Men,
- 44:17Speaker 1: Like it's such a lot, I mean a lot of
- 44:19Speaker 1: superhero stuff. I think that's why I liked Mystique so much.
- 44:23Speaker 1: There was definitely some stuff happening there. And I also
- 44:27Speaker 1: really loved Rogue, and I think Rogue there there's like
- 44:31Speaker 1: a case to be made for Rogue is like, you know,
- 44:34Speaker 1: a queer teen runaway, especially in the first movie, and
- 44:38Speaker 1: then like you know, no Brian Singer, but like there
- 44:43Speaker 1: is a lot of that in that metaphor infused. I mean,
- 44:48Speaker 1: it's it's almost like bald with the have you ever
- 44:51Speaker 1: tried not being mutant? Seen? Like that is like pretty
- 44:53Speaker 1: much is that the one played with it by the
- 44:55Speaker 1: ugly Betty actress. Oh, Rebecca Romaine, Yes, Rebecca Romaine who
- 44:59Speaker 1: So she's the original so she's basically played trans twice
- 45:03Speaker 1: because mystique well. And and also the next two we
- 45:07Speaker 1: get the scene between Alan Cumming and Rebecca Remain where
- 45:12Speaker 1: he was like, you could be anybody? Why why don't
- 45:14Speaker 1: you you know, hide basically and she says we shouldn't
- 45:16Speaker 1: have to um, which is what I pass no passing. Um,
- 45:22Speaker 1: So yeah, I think um the X I don't think
- 45:27Speaker 1: I love any of the X Men movies. I don't
- 45:30Speaker 1: love any of the newer X Men movies nearly as
- 45:32Speaker 1: much as I have loved those first two, I think
- 45:36Speaker 1: and logan I do like. I think First Class has
- 45:39Speaker 1: a lot of charm. I think is also very gay,
- 45:42Speaker 1: also very like the Magneto Professor X stuff is pretty explicit.
- 45:47Speaker 1: And I gotta say, um, our girl, what's her face?
- 45:50Speaker 1: From mad Men? As a living diamond? Like oh, January
- 45:55Speaker 1: January Jones as a living diamond, which is like one
- 45:58Speaker 1: of the acting at all. Thank you Grant Morrison in
- 46:02Speaker 1: a in um New x Men for giving us secondary
- 46:06Speaker 1: mutations that have nothing to do with the person's original powers,
- 46:09Speaker 1: which is when he made Amister and Frost be able
- 46:13Speaker 1: to turn into diamond. Um for no reason. It's an
- 46:17Speaker 1: amazing power, Love, Joel, What what superpower would you want
- 46:21Speaker 1: to have? Um? I think I'm a I'm a mind girl.
- 46:25Speaker 1: I would love like the classic combo telekinesis telepathy combo. Yeah,
- 46:33Speaker 1: I think, like I do. Love. I have sort of
- 46:36Speaker 1: gotten on the train of like I love like you know,
- 46:39Speaker 1: if your power is only telepathy, like what are you
- 46:42Speaker 1: gonna do? Like how are we going to use that
- 46:43Speaker 1: in interesting ways? Like you know, fun stuff like that?
- 46:46Speaker 1: But like so if I had to choose, definitely telepathy,
- 46:49Speaker 1: but I would love the combo pack if I could
- 46:52Speaker 1: get it. Brand what would what would your super power
- 46:54Speaker 1: if I could pick a combo, it would definitely be
- 46:57Speaker 1: shape shifting and maybe invisibility like okay completely but maybe
- 47:02Speaker 1: actually well I think that could be part of the
- 47:03Speaker 1: shape shifting maybe not even like invisibility, but like undetect
- 47:07Speaker 1: like ghost like okay, so like if you're a mystique,
- 47:10Speaker 1: like you know, your scales ripple and maybe like they
- 47:12Speaker 1: turn into a mirror to hide you something like that.
- 47:16Speaker 1: But I want to be ghost ee. I want to
- 47:18Speaker 1: go through walls okay, so maybe something like that. So
- 47:21Speaker 1: Kitty Pride, so Kitty Pride kind of yeah, Kitty Pride
- 47:24Speaker 1: and Misty combo. One of my one of my favorite
- 47:27Speaker 1: sort of like comic book um like moves that we've
- 47:30Speaker 1: sort of moved into in the century is like there
- 47:34Speaker 1: needs to be an explanation for the power. So you
- 47:37Speaker 1: see a lot of like breakdowns of characters who can
- 47:39Speaker 1: become invisible. It's not that they're becoming invisible, it's that
- 47:42Speaker 1: they're bending light around themselves, like Fantastic four. Have you
- 47:50Speaker 1: watched the new Fantastic Four? I did, and it is
- 47:54Speaker 1: I wanted it to be good so much. It's a
- 47:56Speaker 1: plane movie, and like even on a plane, even on
- 47:59Speaker 1: a plane, it is not good. It's this is the thing.
- 48:02Speaker 1: And I love Kate Mara same. I think the superior
- 48:05Speaker 1: Mara for me, Um, I disagree, but superior Mara. I
- 48:11Speaker 1: wonder if they're both anti Baxers. There's going around the
- 48:15Speaker 1: race an anti Baxer. I could see it. Um. But like,
- 48:19Speaker 1: I definitely think like the cardinal sin of these movies
- 48:23Speaker 1: is don't be boring, don't make laugh. It is actually
- 48:31Speaker 1: that's like Kevin five. Every time there's a Marvel f
- 48:34Speaker 1: I gotta make route laugh. Has RuPaul ever seen a
- 48:40Speaker 1: Marvel movie? Do you things? Absolutely not? I mean we're
- 48:44Speaker 1: steps away from seeing a cameo. Yeah, maybe she can
- 48:47Speaker 1: be the new Stanlee. Yeah, I would actually really love that.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Has Michelle Vissage I ever seen a Marvel movie? No?
- 48:53Speaker 1: But did you see that Michelle Vissage got turned down
- 48:56Speaker 1: from UM drag Races Spana. No. She wanted to be
- 49:00Speaker 1: a judge and they said, now, oh that sucks. She
- 49:03Speaker 1: she's a great judge for literally anything. Sure, but like
- 49:06Speaker 1: I will say that like culturally sometimes like she is
- 49:09Speaker 1: pretty like tunnel vision and like what she knows, and
- 49:14Speaker 1: like the international ones. The problem with that I'd see
- 49:17Speaker 1: is like imagine Michelle Facade trying to judge drag Race
- 49:21Speaker 1: Spania or I'm snatch Game of Spania, you know, like
- 49:25Speaker 1: it would be entertaining, but like incorrect. Yeah, I've never
- 49:28Speaker 1: watched a non US drag race. Unfortunately, I have brain
- 49:32Speaker 1: rot and UM, I've seen almost I have now started
- 49:36Speaker 1: to fall off now that we're getting like twelve a year,
- 49:38Speaker 1: but like I have watched most of them. I will
- 49:40Speaker 1: say this about the international ones. I realized very quickly
- 49:43Speaker 1: watching I think Spain that drag Race is not a
- 49:47Speaker 1: show that merits my full attention, and when you have
- 49:50Speaker 1: to like, I never realized how much I was on
- 49:53Speaker 1: my phone watching some of the international seasons until I
- 49:55Speaker 1: had to read the subtitles and I was like, oh,
- 49:59Speaker 1: I don't care enough about this to like give it
- 50:02Speaker 1: my one attention. It's a great phone show, and honestly,
- 50:05Speaker 1: like Marvel movies are good phone movies. Okay, you say that,
- 50:10Speaker 1: but also like I as an extremely passive viewer of
- 50:13Speaker 1: the Marvel movies, some would say groundbreaking, lee passive, I
- 50:16Speaker 1: truly like I watched in Infinity War? Is that what
- 50:19Speaker 1: it's called Infinite War? Last night? I know you watched
- 50:22Speaker 1: Age of Ultron and I watched I watched Age of
- 50:26Speaker 1: Ultron the night before. Anyways, watched um Infinity War. About
- 50:31Speaker 1: forty minutes in. I realized I went to the theater
- 50:34Speaker 1: alone and fell asleep during this movie. So I like
- 50:38Speaker 1: there were multiple scenes where I was like, oh, I
- 50:40Speaker 1: remember waking up to this and and seeing that and
- 50:43Speaker 1: then going back to well. We also, friend and I
- 50:45Speaker 1: watched Winter Soldier the other night in preparation of this,
- 50:48Speaker 1: because you and I had had this fight where you
- 50:50Speaker 1: called me a transwhobic slur and I noticed a couple
- 50:56Speaker 1: of times like her getting her phone out, and I
- 51:00Speaker 1: said it was like, I was like, friend, can you
- 51:02Speaker 1: just like pay attention during this part because I don't
- 51:04Speaker 1: want to have to explain it to you and you
- 51:06Speaker 1: still had to explain it to me probably, um, yeah,
- 51:08Speaker 1: I mean the thing to me is like and this
- 51:10Speaker 1: is what I was trying to say earlier about like
- 51:12Speaker 1: active versus passive watchers is like something that I've discovered,
- 51:15Speaker 1: especially getting to know you, Rose, and like how you've
- 51:18Speaker 1: kind of inducted me into this and honestly, like I
- 51:21Speaker 1: did not have a real fan like interest in the
- 51:24Speaker 1: m c U until maybe Wan Division, because even though
- 51:28Speaker 1: I had watched so many Marvel movies, I wasn't interested
- 51:31Speaker 1: in the entwined world until I was so emotionally invested
- 51:35Speaker 1: in Wanda. And unfortunately, I think it was like episode
- 51:37Speaker 1: four or five and I turned to Rose and I
- 51:39Speaker 1: was like, oh, Wanda was in the Avengers and I
- 51:43Speaker 1: had like fully watched like several Avengers movies and I
- 51:46Speaker 1: didn't ever pick up that, you know, Elizabeth Wilson was there. Okay,
- 52:02Speaker 1: I have a very important question which is what do
- 52:05Speaker 1: you think is Scarlett's worst wig? All of them very important? Well,
- 52:13Speaker 1: I mean, I think it's probably Iron Man too. I
- 52:15Speaker 1: think it's the first couple of wigs that they were
- 52:16Speaker 1: really struggling to figure out the wig situation. That fight scene,
- 52:20Speaker 1: that first fight, the scene that she does not not
- 52:22Speaker 1: in like the boxing ring, but like when she's in
- 52:25Speaker 1: her full Black Widow regalia, I think is icon. Yeah,
- 52:28Speaker 1: it was great. Um. I don't love the ombree wig
- 52:31Speaker 1: that they felt they needed to do for her, like like,
- 52:34Speaker 1: why would she cut her She's too morose, she can't,
- 52:37Speaker 1: can't five years she never cut her hair. It's like,
- 52:40Speaker 1: okay girl. When we were watching Winter Soldier, she also
- 52:44Speaker 1: did an amazing wig reveal of the Wigsraxy Andrew. Yes,
- 52:48Speaker 1: it was what's your favorite Scarlet wig? Bin, I haven't
- 52:53Speaker 1: watched enough of I don't think I differentiated the wigs.
- 52:57Speaker 1: I think her best hair is in Black Widow. I
- 52:59Speaker 1: think Scarlett's us performance. I was gonna say Black Widow,
- 53:03Speaker 1: but I actually felt like more compelled by the other
- 53:05Speaker 1: three actors in that movie. More than is a start,
- 53:10Speaker 1: and I do think sin Field delivered. I'm sold. I
- 53:13Speaker 1: do kind of think that like Scarlett should have been
- 53:16Speaker 1: in the opening scene and then it should have been
- 53:18Speaker 1: like a younger you know, yeah, I will say the
- 53:21Speaker 1: real smoke and mirrors and the magic trick of the
- 53:24Speaker 1: m c U. And again goes back to my point
- 53:25Speaker 1: of like why casting is so important is that, like
- 53:28Speaker 1: that character was a cipher through almost the entire run
- 53:32Speaker 1: of her movies. She just was whatever they needed. They yeah, exactly,
- 53:36Speaker 1: and they like they deliberately kept vague they like, you
- 53:40Speaker 1: know that her uterus was stolen and like and then
- 53:43Speaker 1: they kept pivoting and pivoting and pivoting and pivoting and pivoting.
- 53:46Speaker 1: The romance between her and Hulk completely like deserted, Like
- 53:50Speaker 1: they would start things and dessert them almost immediately with her,
- 53:53Speaker 1: and it was like Black Widow was like the opportunity
- 53:56Speaker 1: to really like close the loop and like really definitively
- 53:59Speaker 1: say like this is who this person is. And again,
- 54:02Speaker 1: the whole point in the movie was that like she
- 54:04Speaker 1: sort of doesn't know who she really is, and like
- 54:07Speaker 1: she felt like more of a supporting character to the
- 54:09Speaker 1: actual story of this family. It became kind of like
- 54:12Speaker 1: a family comedy at some points when they were all
- 54:14Speaker 1: sitting at the dinner table and stuff like that. Okay,
- 54:16Speaker 1: so what even not, fran I want to know, even
- 54:19Speaker 1: like not knowing anything that happens in the Marvel Comics universe.
- 54:24Speaker 1: What is like the craziest prediction you have for the
- 54:28Speaker 1: next phase of Marvel or gayest. I mean, it's not
- 54:33Speaker 1: a crazy prediction, it's it's so hard to separate, like
- 54:35Speaker 1: when when, because I'm so in like the sub credits
- 54:39Speaker 1: and I'm like, you know, I'm an active participant in
- 54:42Speaker 1: all the boards. But like, I think Elizabeth Wilson is
- 54:46Speaker 1: being set up to be the big bad for this
- 54:48Speaker 1: next phase. Like, I think that's very interesting and it's
- 54:51Speaker 1: very true to like what happens in the comic books.
- 54:53Speaker 1: I think be a really interesting way to get the
- 54:55Speaker 1: X Men into the oh real quick sidebar the fake
- 54:59Speaker 1: out in wand Vision with the X Men furious. Yeah,
- 55:03Speaker 1: I was you, I was convenued. Evan Peters played Quicksilver
- 55:10Speaker 1: in The Sony X Men or is it Sony Fox?
- 55:15Speaker 1: The Fox X Men basically before it was owned by
- 55:19Speaker 1: before they had exactly and um uh, Aaron, what's the
- 55:24Speaker 1: hot guy who? Aaron Taylor Johnson played her Quicksilver in
- 55:29Speaker 1: the m c U dies in Age of Ultron, as
- 55:32Speaker 1: you just saw in one division, they like bring back
- 55:35Speaker 1: Pietro and it's Evan Peters and everyone's like, oh my god,
- 55:38Speaker 1: this is how they're going to get the X Men.
- 55:40Speaker 1: And it's some machination of her creating like the universe
- 55:44Speaker 1: and like bringing in like the uh Fox Quicksilver instead,
- 55:48Speaker 1: and then it just was like a complete Red Herring
- 55:51Speaker 1: fake out. And and then like even actually made me
- 55:54Speaker 1: really mad because it's sort of um, like the head
- 55:58Speaker 1: shot that he reveals, Like why is that in that confusing?
- 56:05Speaker 1: Like that felt messy to me by the end. I
- 56:08Speaker 1: wasn't it so much into that? I am curious. Actually,
- 56:11Speaker 1: just a very rudimentary question. You're talking about like maybe
- 56:14Speaker 1: some least favorite additions to m c like you were
- 56:16Speaker 1: talking about Hawkeye, didn't love Captain Marvel or whatever. What
- 56:20Speaker 1: are like the the heroes or like characters where you're
- 56:24Speaker 1: just like Marvel. You cannot make me care about this,
- 56:27Speaker 1: you know what I mean, like aunt Man or whatever.
- 56:29Speaker 1: I mean, I don't care about aunt Man. I like
- 56:33Speaker 1: the first aunt Man movie a lot. Actually again it's
- 56:35Speaker 1: it's a it's a heist movie and a Marvel movie.
- 56:38Speaker 1: I can't. I can't do Guardians of the Gallupy you
- 56:40Speaker 1: and I don't care about that. I loved the first Guardians,
- 56:43Speaker 1: I will say, Chris Pratt, sort of it's really hard
- 56:47Speaker 1: to separate now, crisp Ratt. Yeah, I will say it's
- 56:51Speaker 1: really tough for me because the MC has made me
- 56:53Speaker 1: care about characters that I have never cared about. I
- 56:56Speaker 1: I do not, never cared about Iron Man, never cared
- 56:58Speaker 1: about Thor, never certainly cared about Captain America. You know,
- 57:01Speaker 1: like all of these men that I like suddenly care about.
- 57:05Speaker 1: It is like, so they have done Hung Chi certainly, Like, um,
- 57:09Speaker 1: it was like sort of might take on that was
- 57:12Speaker 1: I was like, yes, there is only one canonically Asian superhero,
- 57:17Speaker 1: but maybe we just take a better one and make
- 57:21Speaker 1: him Asian. Like I don't know that I necessarily like
- 57:25Speaker 1: I find this the most compelling story to tell, but like,
- 57:29Speaker 1: I think they pulled it off well and I think
- 57:31Speaker 1: Aquaphina is a star clearly. And I will also say
- 57:33Speaker 1: this is the other thing that was crazy about Chungchi
- 57:36Speaker 1: and Aquapina is like, of course I want Aquaphina to
- 57:39Speaker 1: continue on in the m CU, but when the when
- 57:42Speaker 1: the Hung or whatever his name is calls them and
- 57:45Speaker 1: he's like, your guy's life about to change, and it's like, well,
- 57:49Speaker 1: why is her She's not a Yeah, I was like,
- 57:53Speaker 1: she's not a part of this. And also she learned
- 57:55Speaker 1: how to be an expert level archer. And although the
- 58:00Speaker 1: time I cannot wait. I cannot wait for the eventual
- 58:03Speaker 1: next Avengers movie when Hayley Steinfeld and Aquafina have a
- 58:07Speaker 1: moment when they're like both shooting, because you know that
- 58:10Speaker 1: will happen. I think part of like what my apathy
- 58:13Speaker 1: towards the Avengers and a lot of movies like entailing
- 58:16Speaker 1: these multi superhero movies is like I mean, like call
- 58:20Speaker 1: me crazy, but like I do crave like films that
- 58:23Speaker 1: are not about the end of civilization, very basic. I
- 58:27Speaker 1: do love Spider Man, so Rose and I have talked
- 58:29Speaker 1: before about how like I love that a lot of
- 58:31Speaker 1: what Spider Man deals with, even though there is end
- 58:33Speaker 1: of the world stuff, is on the micro He's a
- 58:35Speaker 1: friendly neighborhood Spider Man. It's like it's good when the
- 58:38Speaker 1: stakes are a little lower. That's why I I think
- 58:40Speaker 1: Homecoming is one of my favorite MCU movies, and it's
- 58:44Speaker 1: in my top three of this period Spider Man movies,
- 58:47Speaker 1: Like I think the first two Toby McGuire movies and
- 58:49Speaker 1: Homecoming are the three best Spiderman movies. And it's in
- 58:52Speaker 1: large part because of that, because the stakes are very low,
- 58:55Speaker 1: because he's very bad and you see and and it's
- 58:58Speaker 1: also the thing about Spider Man Homecoming is that you
- 59:00Speaker 1: don't really feel in any of the other Spider Man
- 59:03Speaker 1: movies is it's a high school movie. It is a
- 59:05Speaker 1: high school movie, and you really feel the age and
- 59:08Speaker 1: you feel that the youth of that character in a
- 59:11Speaker 1: way exactly like Andrew. Andrew and Toby like them them.
- 59:17Speaker 1: I actually saw Okay, so I haven't seen the Andrew
- 59:19Speaker 1: Garfield movies. They're all on YouTube, so but I saw
- 59:24Speaker 1: a TikTok recently that was talking about how they are
- 59:26Speaker 1: a direct product of Twilight. Oh absolutely, I literally said
- 59:32Speaker 1: the same thing. My boyfriend and I watched them um
- 59:34Speaker 1: as quimbies because we I didn't want to sit down
- 59:38Speaker 1: and watch them, but for a couple of weeks we
- 59:40Speaker 1: would watch them at ten minutes at a time, just
- 59:44Speaker 1: a quick bite, just a quick bite of Andrew Garfield movies.
- 59:47Speaker 1: But like, yeah, it is definitely such a broody like
- 59:50Speaker 1: you can tell it is so two thousand twelve, like
- 59:53Speaker 1: the vibe, it is such a product of its time
- 59:55Speaker 1: in a way that like doesn't really work for me
- 59:58Speaker 1: as a Spider Man movie. I think m a star
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: like really makes those movies fun and watchable in a
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: big way. Andrew an amazing actor. Do I think he's
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Peter Parker or Spider Man? Do we think Cruella exists
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: in the m C? You would love to see that.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I'm so sad because there were so many rumors that
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Emma Stone was going to be in no way home
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: as Spider Gwen likes as a reality maybe that, you know,
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: maybe five years from now that and then maybe Katherine
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Han could come back as doc. Yeah, I mean, what's
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: House of Harkness going to be? Like? I don't know,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: is it gonna be charged? You don't care? I love
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: Catherine Han, I loved Agathe as much as everybody else,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: But I I am like, what is this story going
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: to be? And why should I care? Like if it's
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: if it's a prequel to how she got to where
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: she is, I don't know that. I'm wet. I think
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: we got enough of that in that one episode. Personally,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: I'm just so attracted to the a story and encapsulated
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: story that might be completely outside I think. I also,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: I know, I hope it doesn't fall into that pattern
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: where it does that for the whole season and then
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: the last episode she gets into a big battle and
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: like Gwyneth Paltrow takes off her Iron Man mask, like
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: you know, well that's the that's the thing, and but
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: this is I guess, like I would like it if
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: it's stuff contained. Because the other big problem, and I
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: think the smart the smartest thing they have done is like,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: and I think this is a two way decision, is
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Robert Downey Jr. And Chris Evans both leaving. Because one
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: of my biggest problems now with the expansiveness of this
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: shared universes is that they're not doing as good a
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: job of tracking character development across these films. What piste
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: me off about Endgame is all of the character development
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: that we saw in Ragnarok, they completely ignored an endgame.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Like when we got to Fat Thor, it was like
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: and then like all the stuff about him not wanting
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: to lead and all of this stuff, and it's like, well, then,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: what did we just watch in this last film? Yeah,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: because it was so good. Yeah, it really was. It
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: was like, oh, we finally see this character move forward
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: and become something different and sort of grow and mature,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: and then they completely for a visual joke of about
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: his fucking pop belly. We're going to throw it all away,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Like it just didn't. It's like, I want them to
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: do a better job, and like I'm worried. I'm so
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: excited to see Natalie carry the hammer. I mean, I
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: just that video of her at Comic Con, excited for
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: more tests to I haven't been this excited since Fox Lux. Okay, like, oh, okay,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: now we won't go into box Lux. I'll come back
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: in a couple of months in the public world, but
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: box Lux does exist in in the m c U.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: I think it's you. She's like, she's like Dazzler. Dazzler
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: Dazzler is x men who like her power has to
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: do with singing. She can turn no, she can turn
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: sound into light. So she's like she was creating the
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: seventies as like a disco star that was also I
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: mutant um and like Lady Gaga was for many years
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: rumored to be at some point at some point, but
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: as who because it's not. It won't be Dazzler. Maybe
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: like Emma Frost, a rebooted Emma Frost. That could be
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: cool if they put g gun into you. I really
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: hope it's something that's more contained, like I would. I
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: just think that there, what's the accent? Yeah, that's that's true.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: Is that she she will be like, well, I'm only
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: going to do the role if I can do an ax.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: I would love to see her as Madam Webb in
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: a future Spider Man, just like in like to like
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: teeny tiny black sunglasses and like sitting on a giant
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: like magical spider web like fashion dictating. You know. Um,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: you were talking earlier about how like, um, there was
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: a turn in how they were making superhero movies that
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: like left out like camp in some ways. Obviously like
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: new Marvel movies are still so funny and can play
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: into things like that. But like I will say, like
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: it would be amazing for someone to write now it
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: doesn't have to be like Marvel a d C, but
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: for someone to make like a superhero movie that did
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: feel like you know, the Arnold Schwarzenegger and where he
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: literally was on set screaming, remember we're making a cartoon. Yeah,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: like that is like because that movie for sure is
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: like maybe my favorite superhero movie period. It's so fun.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: I mean the nipples nipples um, as I told Lady
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Freeze when I pulled her plug show, um, Poison Ivy
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: was such a queer awakening for like so many girls.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: Her entrance. Oh yeah, well this is I mean, like
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: many gay boys. If there's a woman fighting in a movie,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: like give it to me, like put it in my vein,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: especially if they're a villain. Because her whole thing was
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: that she just you know, wanted to repopulate the earth
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: with plants. She thought like people were. Poison Ivy was right,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: which is which is actually now brings us back because
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: maybe I do agree with you that Ragnarok is the
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: gayest m CU movie because it's the only one with
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: a great female villain. It is crazy see that we
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: are not seeing more and better female characters in the
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: m c U. Well Thanos is maybe like social culturally queer,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: like I feel like, and I also, I mean if
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: there's a lot of chosen family going on with with
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Fantas as well. His daughters not biologically related, but he
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: said we are family, were family, Yeah, and I mean
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: the fact that his sole mission is to like end
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: our conscious existence because he knows that existence like only
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: entail suffering. I mean that's very queer like fans was right,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: honestly was written on the urnal in Hawkeye, we should
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: have been that we should have been snapped? Would okay?
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Would you have been snapped? No? Why who do you
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: think of the two of us would have been snapped?
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: I think you really think so. But then we have
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: to watch Rose emotionally process that. I would have moved
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: on pretty quickly, I know, but that's why it's not
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: a very compelling story. That's not a whole movie. Um.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Before we go, though, I have to ask what did
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: you think of eternals? What do we think of the
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: gay representation that we're getting internals in Richard Madden, I
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: just want a fucking fag get, you know what I mean?
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: Like I thought that it's cool to see a kiss,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: it's cool for them to be here. His power was
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: super lame, like he there were so many primary characters
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: that I don't think any of them had their moment
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: they should have. You could have used some editing. Eternals
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: is maybe one of the biggest misses that they've had
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: in recently. And also I was shocked that Thanos wasn't
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: I mean, like Thanos is an eternal or whatever? Right, yes,
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: so like I'm I was shocked that they like, yeah,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: he's an eternal canonically. Oh, I didn't know that. I
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: will say that, going back to the very first point
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: of like needing to be a star to lead these movies.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: I love Gemma not a star. I didn't realize she
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: was going to be like the anchor. The anchor. It
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: didn't work. I thought she was very compelling actually, but
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: because there are so many there was no center to me. Also,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: that sex scene was weird as fuck. Yeah, it was tough.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: I think that, like, there's so many interesting things they
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: could have done with that little girl. I mean, fucking
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: interview with the vampire did it better? Yeah, you want
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: to talk about little being stuck as a little girl
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: for centuries, like give us some real like like then
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: they just forgive her and like you a chance powers kids, Yeah,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: it's like, oh, we I made that a tree. I
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: don't know how, and then they never really explain how.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: I don't I don't understand like the power threshold, like
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: how powerful they are the degenerates or whatever. We're just
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: like like generic spaghetti monsters that didn't really come into
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: play at the end. I thought they would join forces
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: or something at the end that made more sense. Generic
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: spaghetti monsters. Like they did feel like the ones from
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Quiet Place. Yeah, they felt like the Quiet Place monsters.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: They felt like the machines in the Matrix. They felt
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: like literally like all the every monsters in Infinity War,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: the ones that come down from the well. And you know,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: it's crazy. In the comic book, Angelina Jolie's character and
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: the generate that she like ends up killing and fighting
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: at the end there um have kids and like fall
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: in love and like, I really like much more interesting
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: than what they actually ended up doing. They did kind of,
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: it was kind of they squandered one. One really fun
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: fact that Rose and I learned, though, is that Angelina
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: Jolie and Lady Gaga had the same dialect coach and
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: it was Doree Kemsley. They literally, you know, both worked
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: with the same person. It was amazing. I'm just happy
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: that I got to touch Angelina Jolie's blonde wig um
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: during my Eternal set visit and walk on the spaceship.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: But also like of all of this, of all of
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: the Marvel sets to visit, like kind of the lamest one. Yeah,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: I was Salma having quite a year. I will say
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: she was under utilite. She's been having a good couple
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: of years. I think since like a boss ship she's
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: amazing and which also exists in the MC. She was
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: underutilized in both House of Gucci and I think she
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: was utilized perfectly the right amount in do we think?
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Do we think Das will be part of Phase five? No?
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Stop it. It's the first non binary character in the Yeah,
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: I can't wait to be the first woman to be
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: misgendered in a Marvel Yeah. Actually that's going to be
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: like my groundbreaking. How do you think they're going to
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: incorporate transnarratives into the m c um badly by dead
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: naming someone? Yea. I mean this just reminds me that
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: ultimately we need an adventure who eats us literally though,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: and that is enough. These adventures that are like sexually
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: fluid or whatever. That is the platform of this podcast,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: that's our stands. How are you gonna how are you
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: gonna save the world if you're afraid of Giardia? Okay, Like, yeah,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: We will be back next week with the gushion on
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Finally, we will be joined by
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: Evan ross Katz, the gay Buffy Expert, which I will
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: say because I'll guess, I'll consider myself the trance Buffy Expert.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: In the meantime, if you've never watched Buffy, catch up
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: watched some episodes. You can also always call us to
