- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not so fast, my friends. Welcome to Not So Fast.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps. We are in the
- 0:20Speaker 2: baseball corner of the Dan Patrick Show Man Cave. One
- 0:24Speaker 2: of the best spots in this whole unbelievable building, Paul.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Yeah, we got baseball behind us, baseball next to us,
- 0:29Speaker 3: and baseball all day on NBC and Peacock. Four games
- 0:32Speaker 3: coming up. You're going to get to those. Lou Merloni
- 0:34Speaker 3: of NBC Sports, our old buddy from the Red Sox,
- 0:36Speaker 3: will be joining us to get us ready for baseball.
- 0:38Speaker 3: And an unbelievable night ahead. That was like a TV
- 0:41Speaker 3: show at Soldier Field last night. We got to chop
- 0:43Speaker 3: that up.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Awesome. All right. Well, the MLB postseason begins today on
- 0:46Speaker 2: NBC and Peacock. First up, Phillies and the Braves, followed
- 0:50Speaker 2: by White Sox and Astros. Then in primetime, of course,
- 0:53Speaker 2: Red Sox, Yankees. And then to wrap it up, the
- 0:56Speaker 2: Cubs face the Padres. MLB Wild Card presented by AbbVie
- 1:00Speaker 2: begins this afternoon on NBC and Peacock. Paul, there is
- 1:04Speaker 2: a lot of positivity to this, but there's something I'm
- 1:07Speaker 2: worried about.
- 1:07Speaker 3: You're worried as a Phillies guy?
- 1:09Speaker 2: No, as a human being, how are we going to sleep?
- 1:10Speaker 2: When are we going to sleep, Paul?
- 1:11Speaker 3: It's a great point. You've got to get your nap now.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I don't know how this is going to work, but
- 1:15Speaker 3: you have to get an hour nap before watching 10 hours.
- 1:18Speaker 3: And you're up late last night because it was a
- 1:19Speaker 3: really good game. So October is the embrace not being
- 1:23Speaker 3: rested month, but enjoying a lot of sports month.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Oh, it's going to be so cool. And obviously, as
- 1:27Speaker 2: you can tell, if you're watching us on NBC and Peacock,
- 1:30Speaker 2: I'm wearing a Phillies jersey. Paul's wearing a Cubs jersey.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I mean, it is a little hard because we are
- 1:35Speaker 2: rooting and trying to be analysts.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Well, let's start with Braves-Phillies. Braves outscored their opponents by
- 1:40Speaker 3: 116 runs this year. Two years ago, it felt like
- 1:42Speaker 3: that was the Braves' year, and they didn't get to it.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Last year, a little down. Chris Sale is back, their
- 1:47Speaker 3: starting pitcher. And the Phillies are wonky. There was a
- 1:50Speaker 3: point in the season where the Phillies were a big disappointment,
- 1:52Speaker 3: one of the biggest disappointments in sports. And now, do
- 1:54Speaker 3: they feel like they've made the playoffs to make an appearance,
- 1:58Speaker 3: or are they threatening?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Well, in 2022, they were pretty bad during the regular season.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Got all the way to the World Series. I'm hoping
- 2:04Speaker 2: that magic rekindles, but they can't hit at all, Paul.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I'm a little worried about the inconsistency.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Okay, White Sox over the Astros. The AL West stinks, man.
- 2:13Speaker 3: I guess they have to have someone out of the
- 2:14Speaker 3: AL West. I think it's a rule. You have to
- 2:15Speaker 3: have someone out of every division. The White Sox are
- 2:18Speaker 3: a feel-good story, but can they be more than that?
- 2:21Speaker 3: Because I think America would jump on their bandwagon. Two
- 2:23Speaker 3: years ago, 121 losses. Feel good story. Not a lot
- 2:26Speaker 3: of star power. Murakami, the Japanese slugger, he's kind of
- 2:29Speaker 3: their star guy. You remember the celebration after they made
- 2:32Speaker 3: the playoffs? It feels like that's the team that America
- 2:34Speaker 3: could jump on the bandwagon.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Well, I mean, Astro, they're the NFC South of baseball.
- 2:39Speaker 2: First 500 team or lower to win a division. You're right.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Somebody had to win this, but it feels like they're sputtering,
- 2:45Speaker 2: which kind of makes them a little dangerous, by the way.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And of course, the hangover from the Astros. Now, I
- 2:49Speaker 3: know the scandal with the Astros is like nine years
- 2:51Speaker 3: old now, but it doesn't feel.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Like it ever goes away. No, not to fans.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Not to fans.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Red Sox versus Yankees. We have some news on that one.
- 2:58Speaker 3: The Sox have been streaky all year. There was a
- 2:59Speaker 3: point in the season where it looked like the Sox
- 3:01Speaker 3: were sellers at the trade deadline. And then they kind
- 3:03Speaker 3: of got it back together. But the bigger news is
- 3:06Speaker 3: it came out today. Yes, network. Aaron Judge is out
- 3:09Speaker 3: for the wildcard round with the shin injury. He was
- 3:11Speaker 3: banged up all season. He played 66 games. In those games,
- 3:14Speaker 3: he hit 241. That's the lowest in eight years for him.
- 3:17Speaker 3: He's 34 years old, Aaron Judge. He had a really
- 3:20Speaker 3: good playoffs last year, but they didn't close the deal.
- 3:22Speaker 3: He needs a signature playoff run that results in a
- 3:25Speaker 3: World Series. And now He's not even in the playoffs yet.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know. I mean, you're already talking about
- 3:29Speaker 2: his legacy in the end. I mean, this year we
- 3:31Speaker 2: don't expect much. He's played seven games since May. But
- 3:34Speaker 2: you can't tell me a 34-year-old Aaron Judge is on
- 3:37Speaker 2: the downside.
- 3:37Speaker 3: You can't be an all-time great Yankee and not have
- 3:40Speaker 3: a World Series on your docket. It's almost automatic. It's
- 3:42Speaker 3: like even harder than, it's easy almost with the Yankees.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, I guess the big issue is
- 3:47Speaker 2: if they do get past the Red Sox, will we
- 3:49Speaker 2: see him at all this postseason? But the Yankees' strength
- 3:52Speaker 2: is their pitching, so who knows?
- 3:53Speaker 3: You know, we had Joey Votto, the former Reds All-Star,
- 3:56Speaker 3: earlier on the Dan Patrick Show. When he heard about
- 3:57Speaker 3: the injury to Judge and him not playing in this series,
- 4:01Speaker 3: he thought that it's way worse. If he was available
- 4:03Speaker 3: and didn't play, you feel okay. But not available means
- 4:06Speaker 3: he thinks he's out for a longer duration.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And it's kind of a weird dynamic because it seemed
- 4:09Speaker 2: like Judge wanted to play and the team had different ideas.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Padres versus the Cubs, late night at NBC. Bullpen issues
- 4:16Speaker 3: all year long with the Cubs. I mean, their bullpen...
- 4:18Speaker 3: They just have to out-hit you. They truly have to
- 4:20Speaker 3: out-hit you with PCA and everyone else on that team.
- 4:23Speaker 3: And it's the opposite with the Padres. Mason Miller, you
- 4:25Speaker 3: get it to him in the eighth and ninth, it's
- 4:27Speaker 3: kind of over, Johnny, at 103 miles an hour.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You know, I pulled PCA's stats from last year's playoffs. Oh, no.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Not good.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Not good.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But 185, Paul, in the playoffs, I mean, they did
- 4:37Speaker 2: beat the Padres.
- 4:38Speaker 3: 185 is the weight you want. It's not what you
- 4:39Speaker 3: want to hit.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that he's actually under a bit of
- 4:42Speaker 2: a microscope. It's been his breakout year. He's going to
- 4:44Speaker 2: win the MVP title. A little bit of pressure. You know,
- 4:47Speaker 2: young players can feel pressure.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's pressure because he's going to get
- 4:50Speaker 3: the MVP and he's going to get it over Otani.
- 4:53Speaker 3: It kind of feels like a quarterback where you had
- 4:55Speaker 3: this great regular season. You're going to get the MVP,
- 4:58Speaker 3: but what do you do first in the playoffs?
- 4:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's going to be a great night. This is
- 5:02Speaker 2: an incredible wildcard round. I've got to be honest, as
- 5:04Speaker 2: a Phillies fan, I'm excited about that.
- 5:06Speaker 3: It's so tense, though, because if you're a team that,
- 5:09Speaker 3: let's say you're the Braves and you've got a lot
- 5:11Speaker 3: of wins, over 90 victories, You lose game one, it's
- 5:14Speaker 3: like all this for nothing.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:16Speaker 3: It could be over so fast.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And then you have the history with the Yankees, Red Sox.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Feels to me... You can sit and analyze and predict everything,
- 5:24Speaker 2: but I'm talking about everything that goes along with that.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I feel like something wild is going to happen.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Doesn't it feel weirdly too early in the playoffs to
- 5:31Speaker 3: have Yankees-Red Sox? Like North Carolina versus Duke in the
- 5:34Speaker 3: first round of the NCAA tournament. Too early.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Great for ratings.
- 5:37Speaker 2: No, it's going to be great for ratings, and it's
- 5:39Speaker 2: going to be fun baseball because that's another series. We
- 5:41Speaker 2: really have no idea what's going to happen.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Speaking of good TV, Monday Night Football, your guy, Case Keenum.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Let's get to it.
- 5:48Speaker 2: So... Chicago Bears, I'll be honest. If you don't know,
- 5:51Speaker 2: if you haven't watched the show, I wrote a book
- 5:52Speaker 2: with Case Keenum. He's a good buddy. But last night
- 5:54Speaker 2: he was playing my Philadelphia Eagles with low expectations. Maybe
- 5:59Speaker 2: this show predicted that he would do well. But low
- 6:02Speaker 2: expectations around the NFL and he came out. It was
- 6:05Speaker 2: almost flawless football in the first half especially. Case looked tremendous.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I was a little bothered by the lack of
- 6:11Speaker 3: expectations for Case Keenum. He is the highest end of
- 6:13Speaker 3: third string quarterbacks. Most teams don't even have a third
- 6:16Speaker 3: string quarterback. This guy is an all-time college great. He
- 6:19Speaker 3: was good when he played. Some could make the case
- 6:22Speaker 3: that the Vikings should have never let him go when
- 6:24Speaker 3: they were better with him. And so when he came out,
- 6:26Speaker 3: what I really liked about this game was the first
- 6:28Speaker 3: two plays they passed the ball. Nice, crisp, short passes.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Not avoid your quarterback case game, embrace your quarterback.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the Eagles were geared up to stop
- 6:36Speaker 2: the Bears running games. Last year, the Bears ran all
- 6:38Speaker 2: over them. And Ben Johnson, head coach of the Bears...
- 6:42Speaker 2: I'm starting to think he might be, if not one
- 6:44Speaker 2: of the top three NFL head coaches, maybe the best
- 6:47Speaker 2: NFL head coach. He totally toyed with Nick Sirianni and
- 6:50Speaker 2: Vic Fangio. They had no idea what was coming.
- 6:53Speaker 3: They played call that way to a win. Because if
- 6:55Speaker 3: you look at the two quarterbacks, Caleb Williams is an improviser.
- 6:57Speaker 3: He makes things happen. Case Keenum is the complete opposite.
- 7:00Speaker 3: He's a timing quarterback, old school, a smaller dropback quarterback.
- 7:05Speaker 3: But I bet you he got every pass out in
- 7:06Speaker 3: under two and a half seconds last night.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You know, I don't even want to say this, but
- 7:09Speaker 2: I know you're excited about Caleb Williams and the Bears.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Does it make you think that maybe Caleb Williams is
- 7:14Speaker 2: in the right style for Ben Johnson? Because Ben Johnson
- 7:17Speaker 2: was awesome in Detroit with Jared Goff, who never runs
- 7:20Speaker 2: at all. Caleb Williams wants to extend every play as
- 7:23Speaker 2: long as he can.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Well, you could go back to last year, and they
- 7:25Speaker 3: always wanted Caleb Williams to throw on platform, as they
- 7:28Speaker 3: like to say, and he doesn't do that that often.
- 7:30Speaker 3: He seems to be better at it. But going back
- 7:31Speaker 3: to last night, there was a point in the first quarter,
- 7:34Speaker 3: the Bears are playing well, Casey Keenum's a feel-good story,
- 7:36Speaker 3: and everything's going well, and they didn't score. The Eagles
- 7:39Speaker 3: get the ball back, and they go on this 99-yard drive.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Hurts gets hurt, no pun, and they bring in Dalton. Dalton,
- 7:45Speaker 3: one pass into the end zone pick, and it felt
- 7:48Speaker 3: like the air came out of the balloon.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know. They had other opportunities, too. I mean,
- 7:52Speaker 2: the Eagles then, it was 10-7 at halftime after that
- 7:55Speaker 2: last-second Jalen Hurts touchdown.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Right.
- 7:57Speaker 3: It felt like at halftime, the feel-good story might have
- 7:59Speaker 3: been over.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I don't even think it was a game of momentum.
- 8:02Speaker 2: There was a part early in the game on that
- 8:05Speaker 2: 99-yard drive where Saquon was running the ball well for
- 8:07Speaker 2: the Eagles. But I'm not sure that Philadelphia's a great matchup.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I don't think there was any way they were coming
- 8:12Speaker 2: out with a W last night. They're 2-1 now. It
- 8:14Speaker 2: felt like they were dying to lose a game the
- 8:16Speaker 2: first two weeks. So I know what you're saying, that
- 8:19Speaker 2: one play by Andy Dalton might have affected everything. I'm
- 8:22Speaker 2: not sure that Chicago just didn't outplay them all night long.
- 8:24Speaker 3: You know, in the second half, Keenum stepped on the gas, 247,
- 8:27Speaker 3: two touchdowns. He ran in a quarterback sneak where they
- 8:29Speaker 3: call their, basically like their surprise sneak where the linemen
- 8:33Speaker 3: pull another way and he ran. The defensive linemen were
- 8:35Speaker 3: completely surprised. Jalen Hurts couldn't get it together. Saquon Barkley
- 8:39Speaker 3: didn't run as much in the second half. I want
- 8:41Speaker 3: to go with the fallout of this before we get
- 8:43Speaker 3: back to Keenum. The fallout of this for the Eagles
- 8:45Speaker 3: today is what? They're still 2-1.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I mean, not much. Everyone expected this.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Really?
- 8:50Speaker 2: They looked awful the first two weeks. Against Washington, they
- 8:54Speaker 2: didn't have anything going offensively. Then against Titans, they only
- 8:57Speaker 2: got it going toward the end of the game. That
- 8:59Speaker 2: was the Titans.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I'm kind of surprised by your reaction here. I thought
- 9:02Speaker 3: in Philadelphia today this would be like national embarrassment time.
- 9:04Speaker 2: No, I think the Philadelphia fans are very skeptical. They're very,
- 9:08Speaker 2: very knowledgeable. I mean, they're not like normal fans. They
- 9:10Speaker 2: know this offense in and out, and they knew that
- 9:13Speaker 2: something's not clicking for four quarters with Sean Mannion and
- 9:16Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts. This is my opinion. I listened to the
- 9:18Speaker 2: Three Eagles podcast this morning. They're like, wow, we saw
- 9:21Speaker 2: this coming because the offense has not been humming all
- 9:23Speaker 2: season long.
- 9:24Speaker 3: There was an unbelievable play here. I think we just
- 9:25Speaker 3: showed where Edwards, the linebacker for the Bears, is looking
- 9:28Speaker 3: into the huddle and trying to see what Jalen Hurts
- 9:30Speaker 3: is saying. And he's reading his lips or actually hearing
- 9:32Speaker 3: what he says, drops back.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Here it is right here.
- 9:34Speaker 3: It's like he was almost in the huddle there. Drops back,
- 9:37Speaker 3: almost on cue, and made the interception. It's one of
- 9:39Speaker 3: the plays of the night.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Yeah, he had a second play like that where he
- 9:41Speaker 2: dropped back and almost intercepted it. There was some writing
- 9:45Speaker 2: after the game that Dennis Allen knew this play was coming,
- 9:47Speaker 2: the defense coordinator for the Bears, and that Hurts is
- 9:49Speaker 2: not good when the linebacker drops off. Again, Bears outcoach
- 9:53Speaker 2: the Eagles in every single turn.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Okay, let's look at the Bears going forward. Case Keenum starts,
- 9:57Speaker 3: plays well. It was like one of those major... events
- 10:00Speaker 3: last night. They were celebrating with their kids. I thought
- 10:03Speaker 3: he was retiring after the game. Maybe he should have.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Going forward for the Bears, Caleb Williams out a month, likely.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Do you pivot back to Tyson Bajent, or do you
- 10:10Speaker 3: ride Case Keenum until it goes poorly?
- 10:13Speaker 2: I mean, you've got to ride Case for one more game.
- 10:16Speaker 2: The Jets are coming up. And it feels like this
- 10:18Speaker 2: is not going to be good for Case because it
- 10:20Speaker 2: was such a high. How do you go any higher? Typically,
- 10:23Speaker 2: you come down from that. No, you can't switch up
- 10:25Speaker 2: and down, especially because the offense moves so well. I
- 10:27Speaker 2: was actually surprised. I thought Bajan might even play last night.
- 10:30Speaker 2: He got out of the concussion protocol on Saturday, but
- 10:33Speaker 2: they went with Case. It just seems like Case fits
- 10:35Speaker 2: this offense very well. Remember in the preseason, Case played
- 10:38Speaker 2: the Cleveland Browns in week one, had the game of
- 10:40Speaker 2: his life. It was 9 for 10, 180 yards, two touchdowns.
- 10:44Speaker 2: So he obviously is very comfortable. Bajan is also comfortable,
- 10:48Speaker 2: but you've got to ride this until the wheels come on.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Yeah, not near the experience. I think the fans would
- 10:52Speaker 3: revolt if you replaced Case Keenum right now.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Well, I wonder, though, is Caleb Williams definitely out, too?
- 10:57Speaker 3: Well, they've said two to four weeks. You see him
- 11:00Speaker 3: on the sidelines. Everyone's trying to read body language. They're like,
- 11:02Speaker 3: he doesn't have a hitch in his step, but he's
- 11:04Speaker 3: walking out of the field.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Two weeks? That would be two weeks. It would be.
- 11:07Speaker 3: All right, let's get to helmet stickers last night. I'm
- 11:10Speaker 3: going to let you go first. I think it's obvious
- 11:12Speaker 3: where you're going. I'm going to yield the floor to
- 11:13Speaker 3: you and your co-author.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Oh, I'm not doing Case Keenum. He deserves more than
- 11:18Speaker 2: a helmet sticker for that. He deserves a statue outside
- 11:21Speaker 2: the Not So Fast studio. I'm going to go with
- 11:23Speaker 2: a surprise wide receiver, Kalief Raymond.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Kalief Raymond, he's on his 15th in 10 years. He
- 11:29Speaker 2: is 17th in the league in receiving yards, which is amazing,
- 11:34Speaker 2: because you have Roma Dunze and you have Colston Loveland,
- 11:36Speaker 2: and it seems like the Bears quarterbacks only want to
- 11:38Speaker 2: throw to Kalief Raymond.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Well, it is funny that I didn't think in week
- 11:41Speaker 3: three I'd be discussing the Case Keenum-Kalief Raymond connection being
- 11:44Speaker 3: one of the best, hottest in the NFL, but that's
- 11:46Speaker 3: a great pick. I'm going to go my helmet ticker
- 11:48Speaker 3: to Case Keenum. We weren't that surprised. I think we
- 11:51Speaker 3: had the clip yesterday of us talking about this game,
- 11:53Speaker 3: and we weren't that surprised. We believed in Case Keenum
- 11:57Speaker 3: from the standpoint of, Yeah, he's not like an all-star.
- 12:00Speaker 3: He's not an all-pro, and it's been a long time.
- 12:01Speaker 3: But here's what we had to say yesterday. I think
- 12:03Speaker 3: they're going to have trouble with Keenum because he is
- 12:06Speaker 3: beyond a veteran. The guy's 38 years old. He's got
- 12:08Speaker 3: more gray hair than us. But they have no tape
- 12:10Speaker 3: on the guy. He doesn't play a lot. He hasn't
- 12:12Speaker 3: started the game in three years.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I think the Bears win this one 21-19. The Eagles
- 12:16Speaker 2: almost lost to the Titans, and you saw how bad
- 12:18Speaker 2: the Titans were this weekend. The Eagles' offense has yet
- 12:21Speaker 2: to figure out its rhythm.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I'll go 24-23 Bears. Completely self-serving by us.
- 12:26Speaker 2: By the way, we were wrong. It was 27-7. We
- 12:29Speaker 2: had a close game. It should have been a close game,
- 12:32Speaker 2: by the way. The teams were evenly matched. But I
- 12:35Speaker 2: think once the Eagles fell behind too far, they kind
- 12:37Speaker 2: of gave up on the game.
- 12:38Speaker 3: You know, a bigger picture, forget about the Eagles and
- 12:40Speaker 3: the Bears. That was a great night for sports. That
- 12:42Speaker 3: was a night where you're like, if you didn't have
- 12:43Speaker 3: a dog in the fight and you're just sitting down
- 12:45Speaker 3: to watch Monday Night Football, you're like, this is a
- 12:46Speaker 3: fantastic story of a guy who's 38 and never really
- 12:50Speaker 3: had that great moment in the pros. I know he
- 12:52Speaker 3: had some good days with the Vikings. But it felt
- 12:54Speaker 3: like great TV.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. It felt like Case won the Super Bowl.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I thought he was going to say, I'm going to
- 12:58Speaker 2: Disneyland after the game. I don't know if you watch
- 13:01Speaker 2: all the post-game interviews. His daughter was out with SVP.
- 13:04Speaker 2: His wife was on camera. Hi, Kimberly, if you're watching.
- 13:07Speaker 2: It was a great night for Case. Maybe I was
- 13:10Speaker 2: thinking to myself, you know, you have the Jets in
- 13:12Speaker 2: six days. Maybe, you know, what if you win that game?
- 13:15Speaker 2: Is it going to be as exciting? Forget it. He's rolling.
- 13:17Speaker 2: All right. We're going to have a lot more NFL
- 13:19Speaker 2: coming up, including I have an interesting take. It is
- 13:23Speaker 2: not the Chinese year of the horse. It is a
- 13:25Speaker 2: year of the backup quarterback. Get excited. That's next on
- 13:29Speaker 2: Not So Fast.
- 13:39Speaker 3: First time I met Andrew Perloff, I remember it well.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I was with Dan Patrick at the SI Studios in
- 13:44Speaker 3: New York City in the offices. And we were talking
- 13:46Speaker 3: to different editors about editing Dan's page. And the first
- 13:49Speaker 3: guy came in, the second guy came in, and they
- 13:51Speaker 3: were normal, nice guys. And Andrew came in kind of
- 13:54Speaker 3: like Kramer, just like papers. And then like one shirt,
- 13:59Speaker 3: the thing was out, but he was funny and he
- 14:01Speaker 3: had ideas and he was goofy, but he had ideas
- 14:05Speaker 3: and they were funny ideas. And then we met two
- 14:07Speaker 3: more people. And when we got done, Dan and I,
- 14:09Speaker 3: I think we took a train home for God's sake.
- 14:11Speaker 3: And he goes, which guy do you like? I'm like,
- 14:13Speaker 3: you know, the tall guy. And we didn't remember anybody's name.
- 14:15Speaker 3: He goes, the guy who looked like McLovin from Superbad?
- 14:18Speaker 3: I'm like, well, he's a little older than that, like
- 14:19Speaker 3: McLovin's uncle. He goes, yeah, that guy. So we call
- 14:22Speaker 3: back and say, like, we like that guy, like Andrew Perloff.
- 14:26Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, I think that's his name, but he
- 14:28Speaker 3: stuck out in a good way. All right, Pearl, back
- 14:35Speaker 3: on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff. Midday Pigment. This
- 14:38Speaker 3: is the Dodgers bonus coverage for the postseason. Baseball glove
- 14:42Speaker 3: bowl of nachos. You know, sign me up. A plastic
- 14:46Speaker 3: glove full of questionable cheese and nachos. I would wolf
- 14:51Speaker 3: that down in a second.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. When did the tradition of putting nachos in
- 14:55Speaker 2: non-bowls start in baseball? I feel like it's been around
- 14:57Speaker 2: for a while.
- 14:57Speaker 3: I would like to know. Maybe we could call Peter
- 14:59Speaker 3: Gammons or some historian like that or.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I think that's a moment that is really, you know,
- 15:04Speaker 2: there's Jackie Robinson, of course, playing, and then there's the
- 15:07Speaker 2: first person to put nachos into a helmet. Of course.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Those are classic moments. Now, if you think about those moments, though,
- 15:12Speaker 3: I've been to Cubs games before, and you get the
- 15:14Speaker 3: helmet of nachos. You've got to eat them fast. They
- 15:16Speaker 3: can get a little soupy in inning 7, 8, 9
- 15:19Speaker 3: in the hot summer.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll be honest. I do like the concept. I
- 15:23Speaker 2: don't like having too messy of food here. I'm more
- 15:25Speaker 2: of a straight— Peanuts and Diet Coke. Yeah, you are.
- 15:28Speaker 3: A lot of baseball coming up today, but it's time
- 15:30Speaker 3: for Warm Takes. It's what we do here on Not
- 15:31Speaker 3: So Fast. And I'm going to go first, Pearl. I'm
- 15:34Speaker 3: going to stay with baseball. Baseball playoffs are here. It's
- 15:37Speaker 3: a month-long session of baseball, and it hits you hard
- 15:40Speaker 3: with the wild card. And as much as I love football,
- 15:43Speaker 3: there's a difference to the playoffs in baseball. There's attention,
- 15:46Speaker 3: bat to bat, pulling the pitcher, bringing the pitcher in, bunt,
- 15:51Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff. And I find it to
- 15:53Speaker 3: be a more tense sport in the postseason. the pauses,
- 15:56Speaker 3: the foul ball calls, all the different things that increase
- 15:59Speaker 3: the drama, the likelihood of extra innings. And there's another
- 16:02Speaker 3: thing that happens. I think it's unique to baseball, maybe
- 16:04Speaker 3: not to other sports. It's superstition. I'll be watching a game,
- 16:07Speaker 3: my team in the playoffs. If I'm sitting in a
- 16:09Speaker 3: certain chair and they get three hits in a row,
- 16:11Speaker 3: I'm not leaving that chair. And it works in reverse order.
- 16:15Speaker 3: If I'm standing in the kitchen watching the kitchen TV
- 16:18Speaker 3: and they give up three runs, I am out of
- 16:19Speaker 3: the kitchen for the rest of the night. I like
- 16:21Speaker 3: to think that I'm not superstitious as a person, But
- 16:24Speaker 3: I think we all have that superstition as a sports
- 16:26Speaker 3: fan in the moment. If you're watching your football team,
- 16:29Speaker 3: baseball team, basketball team in a certain room in the
- 16:31Speaker 3: house and they start playing well, you're not going. I've
- 16:34Speaker 3: been at bars before with people. And when a team
- 16:36Speaker 3: is doing well, they're like, let's stay here. Or if
- 16:38Speaker 3: a team is not doing well, my buddies are like,
- 16:40Speaker 3: let's go to another bar. It's just not working out
- 16:41Speaker 3: for Team X. So superstitions is real in sports. And
- 16:45Speaker 3: as much as I'd like to say I don't have
- 16:47Speaker 3: it and you'd like to say it, you know you
- 16:49Speaker 3: have it. Tell me what yours is because everybody has it. Pearl,
- 16:51Speaker 3: what's yours?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Well, you're saying, by the way, that it's real. Like,
- 16:55Speaker 2: do you think it actually affects the play? For example,
- 16:57Speaker 2: if I am standing by my refrigerator and Jalen Hurts
- 17:00Speaker 2: throws a touchdown and then I move, is Jalen Hurts
- 17:04Speaker 2: definitely going to suffer? Like, I'm trying to assess what
- 17:06Speaker 2: you're saying here.
- 17:07Speaker 3: You both don't believe it's real, but you don't want
- 17:09Speaker 3: to mess with it, right?
- 17:10Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 17:11Speaker 3: So you're superstitious-ish.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. No, I'm absolutely, I stand in my house
- 17:18Speaker 2: where they're doing well, and then I move. There's a
- 17:21Speaker 2: scene in Always Sunny in Philadelphia where Jason Kelsey comes
- 17:23Speaker 2: on and explains that everything we do out on the
- 17:25Speaker 2: field is because of where you are standing in your kitchen.
- 17:28Speaker 2: I mean, listen, whether it's real or not, it's happening, Paul.
- 17:31Speaker 2: We are all superstitious.
- 17:32Speaker 3: We don't walk under ladders, and when our team gets
- 17:34Speaker 3: four hits in a row, we stay in that chair.
- 17:35Speaker 3: That's what we do.
- 17:36Speaker 2: All right. Absolutely. Okay. You know, Paul, I love me
- 17:40Speaker 2: some backup quarterbacks. I know a lot of backup quarterbacks.
- 17:43Speaker 2: They're always the friendliest guy on the team. Often they
- 17:45Speaker 2: become head coaches. I got to tell you, 2026 is
- 17:48Speaker 2: the year of the backup quarterback. There's a stat that
- 17:51Speaker 2: was put out by ESPN Insights that really sums it up.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Quarterbacks who did not start week one for their team
- 17:58Speaker 2: are now 6-0 for their team. No quarterback who did
- 18:02Speaker 2: not start week one and started another game has lost
- 18:05Speaker 2: a game. Carson Wentz is 1-0. Marcus Mariota is 1-0.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Jameis Winston, believe it or not, beat the Titans. He's 1-0.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Of course, Case. Panics came back and won. And Drew Locke,
- 18:16Speaker 2: you forgot about two weeks ago, won. So there seems
- 18:19Speaker 2: to be something going on here. And I'm kind of
- 18:20Speaker 2: making light of this. But I have a theory, Paul,
- 18:23Speaker 2: why backup quarterbacks are doing well. Go ahead. I think
- 18:26Speaker 2: we're seeing some very strong head coaching around the league.
- 18:29Speaker 2: I think last night you can bring in a Case
- 18:31Speaker 2: Keenum and he's running Ben Johnson's offense. And Ben Johnson
- 18:35Speaker 2: had so many tricks up his sleeve, the Eagles did
- 18:37Speaker 2: not know what was coming.
- 18:38Speaker 3: So they're being propped up a little bit.
- 18:40Speaker 2: It's not even that they're being propped up. I think
- 18:41Speaker 2: that the systems are so strong right now that they
- 18:44Speaker 2: can win with almost any quarterback. You look at, obviously,
- 18:47Speaker 2: Seattle with Mike McDonald. That coaching staff is great. Kevin
- 18:50Speaker 2: O'Connell has proven he can win with a variety of quarterbacks,
- 18:53Speaker 2: even though their offense has been terrible. So I think
- 18:55Speaker 2: in today's day and age, with the systems we're seeing
- 18:58Speaker 2: around after Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, I think they're set
- 19:02Speaker 2: up so backup quarterbacks can win.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think the backup quarterbacks, we always hear
- 19:06Speaker 3: the phrases that they don't get first-team reps anymore. It's
- 19:09Speaker 3: not like they're not doing anything.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Oh, I know. I mean, they've also, these guys have
- 19:12Speaker 2: been around.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and the more age you have on the backup quarterback,
- 19:15Speaker 3: like a McCown brother back in the day, age is
- 19:18Speaker 3: a good thing for a backup quarterback. I don't want
- 19:20Speaker 3: my backup being 23 years old.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Even a guy like Drew Locke. Surprisingly, he's over 28
- 19:25Speaker 3: years old.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, he's been around a while now.
- 19:27Speaker 3: So that's the kind of guy you want.
- 19:29Speaker 2: It's funny, if you have a young rookie, for example,
- 19:31Speaker 2: the Rams, of course, draft Ty Simpson, but then they
- 19:34Speaker 2: want to make Stetson Bennett the backup. So Fernando Mendoza,
- 19:37Speaker 2: there was talk he'd be third string behind Aiden O'Connell
- 19:40Speaker 2: or somebody there. Yeah, O'Connell. So basically, coaches are smart.
- 19:44Speaker 2: They want the old guy to run the system if
- 19:45Speaker 2: they need to put in the backup.
- 19:46Speaker 3: All right, let's stay with backup quarterbacks and go back
- 19:49Speaker 3: last night to Monday night. Football at Soldier Field.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 19:51Speaker 3: I must have heard 38 times last night on the
- 19:54Speaker 3: air that Case Keenum is 38 years old. I don't
- 19:57Speaker 3: know why that's such a big topic. There are a
- 19:59Speaker 3: lot of quarterbacks over 35 in the league, and now
- 20:01Speaker 3: it's not even that big of a deal. We have
- 20:02Speaker 3: quarterbacks over 40 playing well, like Aaron Rodgers. But Case
- 20:05Speaker 3: Keenum's age I didn't think was a negative in any way.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Rustiness?
- 20:08Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Age? No.
- 20:10Speaker 3: I think a guy like him knows all the ins
- 20:12Speaker 3: and outs of the sport. And by being on the sidelines,
- 20:14Speaker 3: he may know even more than some guys who are playing.
- 20:17Speaker 3: You know, this isn't the 1970s where Ken Stabler looked 70,
- 20:21Speaker 3: even though he was 30. These athletes are in better shape.
- 20:24Speaker 3: They got all the physical and mental abilities to do
- 20:26Speaker 3: what they want to do. They have all the training
- 20:28Speaker 3: and the eating. So 38 now is not 38 of
- 20:31Speaker 3: the 80s, plus the money. You know, Case Keenum is
- 20:34Speaker 3: making $ 2 million a year to be like a player coach,
- 20:36Speaker 3: so he had his unbelievable night last night. But you
- 20:39Speaker 3: shouldn't be surprised. A guy like him who threw for
- 20:41Speaker 3: 20,000 yards in college, he doesn't forget how to play
- 20:44Speaker 3: because he's not playing for three years. And I think
- 20:46Speaker 3: he was completely underrated by mostly the media and the
- 20:48Speaker 3: fans last night. So back to Keenum. This was one
- 20:51Speaker 3: of those nights you don't get very often in your career.
- 20:53Speaker 3: If this is his last start, which it probably won't be,
- 20:55Speaker 3: it felt like a celebration. But don't be surprised when
- 20:58Speaker 3: a veteran does something. Like Joe Flacco a couple years ago.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Flacco.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Flacco couldn't run when he was young. What do you
- 21:03Speaker 3: think he's going to run now? Case Keenum wasn't fast
- 21:06Speaker 3: when he was young. The same player he was. Case Keenum,
- 21:09Speaker 3: they're like, you know, he doesn't have that big of
- 21:11Speaker 3: an arm. Calm down a little bit. Just because he's
- 21:13Speaker 3: a small guy, he has a very good arm. So
- 21:15Speaker 3: it's almost like it was dismissive going into the game
- 21:18Speaker 3: and everyone bought into the concept.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you're absolutely right. I mean, Matthew Stafford is
- 21:21Speaker 2: playing incredible football at 38 and he's a guy who never,
- 21:25Speaker 2: you know, if you're a mobile quarterback, it's a different formula.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Josh Allen, will he last till 38? I don't know.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Will Lamar Jackson be the same quarterback?
- 21:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Cam Newton after 30 is not the same Cam Newton.
- 21:33Speaker 2: But it doesn't affect a guy like Case Keenum. It
- 21:35Speaker 2: doesn't affect a guy like Andrew Perloff on the basketball
- 21:37Speaker 2: court because I could never run and jump anyway. I'm
- 21:39Speaker 2: just an outside shooter.
- 21:39Speaker 3: And now you can really, really not run and jump.
- 21:41Speaker 2: But you're right about Case Keenum, though. Case did say
- 21:43Speaker 2: after the game, he gave an interview, Paul, you'll appreciate this.
- 21:47Speaker 2: And he said, well, one thing I decided to play
- 21:49Speaker 2: again this year, I had to change my diet immediately
- 21:51Speaker 2: to get back in football shape. So he had to
- 21:54Speaker 2: eat right for a whole summer.
- 21:55Speaker 3: I want to know the Texas off-the-board diet by Case Ginnis.
- 21:58Speaker 3: That's the diet I want.
- 21:59Speaker 2: No, it's probably a lot of barbecue. Come June, he's like, sorry,
- 22:03Speaker 2: no more barbecue. But you're right, 38 is definitely not old.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Although Case did say, I don't know how many more
- 22:10Speaker 2: of these I'm going to have. Feels like he's had
- 22:12Speaker 2: enough football. You're right, he was in Houston for a
- 22:14Speaker 2: long time. He's good.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Two more starts and right off into the sunset.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Absolutely. Okay, I'm going to have a combo NFL college
- 22:21Speaker 2: football topic here. Now, the University of Michigan, of course,
- 22:25Speaker 2: did win the title, and that was great. But since then, Paul,
- 22:29Speaker 2: things have not exactly gone according to plan. There's so
- 22:33Speaker 2: many little signs of things that have gone wrong with
- 22:35Speaker 2: the Wolverines. Obviously, all the NCAA problems. Then you get
- 22:40Speaker 2: Jerome Moore takes over. We know about him. He's a
- 22:43Speaker 2: total disaster. There was a guy with the program, Matt Weiss.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Remember him? He did the things on the computer. I
- 22:49Speaker 2: don't even know where his legal case is. But it's
- 22:51Speaker 2: not just that. It's the NFL part, too. Jim Harbaugh,
- 22:54Speaker 2: who's still associated with that title team, is 0-3. And
- 22:57Speaker 2: then J.J. McCarthy, I think we can say it now,
- 23:00Speaker 2: that he's traded from the Vikings to the Giants for
- 23:03Speaker 2: a fifth-round pick. That is officially a bust. We don't
- 23:06Speaker 2: like the word bust, but it says bust.
- 23:08Speaker 3: He's entered the bust zone.
- 23:10Speaker 2: So what has happened now? And then Michigan loses to
- 23:13Speaker 2: Western Michigan when they kind of cheated. I mean, it
- 23:16Speaker 2: wasn't their fault, but they got an extra second.
- 23:17Speaker 3: You know, we've talked about this before, Perloff. We said,
- 23:19Speaker 3: will you sell your soul for a title? Did Michigan
- 23:21Speaker 3: sell their future for a title?
- 23:22Speaker 2: They absolutely did. And then I was going to say Iowa,
- 23:24Speaker 2: last second touchdown, that whole drive was a mess for Michigan.
- 23:27Speaker 2: So it feels like everything from the championship team has
- 23:30Speaker 2: gone downhill. And now people, future generations are going to say, wait,
- 23:34Speaker 2: was it all Connor Stallions? Harbaugh needs to win to
- 23:38Speaker 2: help his former team.
- 23:40Speaker 3: And 10 years from now, you can have the reunion
- 23:41Speaker 3: of the national title team and all the badness will
- 23:44Speaker 3: be off it. All right, let's stick to that with
- 23:45Speaker 3: the college football play of the season. And you just
- 23:48Speaker 3: referenced it, Pearl. Now, it was NC State versus Vandy.
- 23:52Speaker 3: I'm very sorry about this one, but this was an
- 23:54Speaker 3: all-time bad play. So we're tracking this all season. The
- 23:57Speaker 3: best play, the greatest play, the wonkiest play of the
- 24:00Speaker 3: college football. You remember this from a couple weeks ago?
- 24:02Speaker 3: NC State going to win this game. And here's what
- 24:04Speaker 3: happened against Vandy. Oh, I can't believe we're showing it again.
- 24:07Speaker 2: This seems cruel and unusual.
- 24:09Speaker 3: It does seem like we're piling on. We're flogging the
- 24:11Speaker 3: horse a little bit. You know what, Perloff? Here's the
- 24:14Speaker 3: next play. Here we go, Perloff. This is the next play.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Iowa quarterback Hank Brown to wide receiver Reese Van Der
- 24:21Speaker 3: Zee to end the game against Michigan, as you referenced earlier.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Back shoulder, bango, win, walk off, back to Iowa City.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Well, we have a big audience in Michigan, I know.
- 24:29Speaker 2: We're not trying to rub it in, but this was
- 24:32Speaker 2: play of the year. This was unbelievable.
- 24:33Speaker 3: And so let's let NC State off the hook. Let's
- 24:37Speaker 3: go to Iowa. The quarterback's name is Hank Brown, a
- 24:39Speaker 3: very Iowa-sounding name, Hank Brown. Great play, Iowa play.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Of the year.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and also it's Iowa. They do not have plays
- 24:44Speaker 2: like this. You know, touchdown passes, things like that. That's
- 24:47Speaker 2: not an Iowa thing, let alone dramatic touchdown passes.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Not in big games.
- 24:51Speaker 2: So you're right. You know, you're right. I do think
- 24:53Speaker 2: the Vandy NC State play will go down in history,
- 24:56Speaker 2: but we're going to be positive here.
- 24:58Speaker 3: We're going to be positive. All right, let's talk some
- 24:59Speaker 3: more baseball in a little bit. Lou Merloni of NBC
- 25:02Speaker 3: Sports will be joining us. And coming up next, LeBron
- 25:05Speaker 3: haircut talking about why he's a Sixer.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 25:08Speaker 3: This is Not So Fast.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. Perloff here. Paps there.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Big day of baseball at NBC and Peacock. Let's run
- 25:18Speaker 2: it down. 2 p.m. Phillies at Braves. 5 p.m. White
- 25:21Speaker 2: Sox at Astros. 8 p.m. Eastern, that is. Red Sox
- 25:24Speaker 2: at Yankees at NBC and Peacock. And 10 p.m. Paul's
- 25:27Speaker 2: Cubs at the Padres on Peacock and NBCSN. It's so exciting.
- 25:32Speaker 2: I can't tell you which series I'm more excited for, Paul,
- 25:35Speaker 2: because I'm into all of them. But the early game
- 25:37Speaker 2: has got me really nervous about the Phillies.
- 25:39Speaker 3: You've got to get home fast, bud.
- 25:40Speaker 2: I've got to get home fast. Prime time is a whopper,
- 25:44Speaker 2: of course. Red Sox, Yankees, and here to talk about
- 25:47Speaker 2: it is Lou Merloni. Of course, calls games for Nesson.
- 25:51Speaker 2: He's here on behalf of NBC. He's going to call
- 25:53Speaker 2: the game tonight with Jason Benetti and Joe Girardi. Lou,
- 25:57Speaker 2: how you doing? Lou, do you happen to remember when
- 25:59Speaker 2: you filled in for DP's show? It might have been
- 26:02Speaker 2: a decade ago. You came in and you were hanging
- 26:05Speaker 2: with the Danettes in the old Milford Man Cave, and
- 26:09Speaker 2: it was awesome. I don't even know if you remember that.
- 26:11Speaker 6: I do remember that because I didn't want to leave
- 26:13Speaker 6: that studio. I think we were shooting hoop. I mean,
- 26:15Speaker 6: it was the best studio I've ever seen.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Yeah, Lou, I remember you being here and you judged
- 26:19Speaker 3: our batting stances and you just had your hand over
- 26:22Speaker 3: your head like, these guys clearly never played baseball.
- 26:26Speaker 6: Well, that was a long time ago, so I'm sure
- 26:27Speaker 6: the stances have improved with all the technology out there.
- 26:31Speaker 2: All right, Lou, obviously big game today. What was your
- 26:34Speaker 2: reaction to the official Aaron Judge will not be on
- 26:36Speaker 2: the Yankees playoff roster when the news came out?
- 26:41Speaker 6: Well, that Stanton, I guess, is apparently closer because, you know,
- 26:43Speaker 6: if there's one pinch hit opportunity for Stanton in the game,
- 26:46Speaker 6: they're going to give it to Stanton rather than Judge.
- 26:48Speaker 6: So I know there was a lot of debate, right,
- 26:51Speaker 6: like do you want Judge in there or not because
- 26:52Speaker 6: he can only DH, which may get Goldschmidt or Rice
- 26:55Speaker 6: out of the lineup because that would be a tough
- 26:57Speaker 6: decision for Booney. I have a hard time rooting for
- 26:59Speaker 6: Judge to be in the game because if he do,
- 27:01Speaker 6: he's going to hit two or three home runs. But, no,
- 27:04Speaker 6: I thought it was interesting. They don't want to push him,
- 27:07Speaker 6: and they're hoping that they can obviously move on and
- 27:08Speaker 6: he'll be in better shape for the next round.
- 27:10Speaker 3: You know, Lou, we had Joey Votto on earlier on
- 27:12Speaker 3: the Dan Patrick Show, and he said his concern was
- 27:14Speaker 3: when you leave someone out for a series, that makes
- 27:17Speaker 3: him think that the injury is worse and could be
- 27:19Speaker 3: the entire playoffs. Is that something you felt or are
- 27:21Speaker 3: you not sure yet?
- 27:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not so sure.
- 27:23Speaker 6: You know, Judge is one of the best. When healthy,
- 27:27Speaker 6: he's the best hitter in the game, right? He's top
- 27:28Speaker 6: two or three, whatever you want to call it. So
- 27:31Speaker 6: I know I'm sure he was itching to get back
- 27:32Speaker 6: into this. No superstar at his level wants to miss
- 27:35Speaker 6: a playoff game knowing that, you know, this thing could
- 27:37Speaker 6: end without him getting in at bat. So I do
- 27:40Speaker 6: think it plays a little mind game, but I think
- 27:42Speaker 6: if they can move on, I think then he's going
- 27:44Speaker 6: to push hard to hopefully be available after that.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Okay, Lou, it's funny because the Yankees now are more
- 27:50Speaker 2: of a pitching team for this series. How concerned are
- 27:52Speaker 2: you from your Red Sox fandom about the Yankees' three starters?
- 27:58Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I think.
- 27:59Speaker 6: I think both staffs, both starters are all capable, all
- 28:01Speaker 6: six of them. So I think offensively, this is going
- 28:03Speaker 6: to be, I don't expect to see eight to seven.
- 28:06Speaker 6: That's why I think, you know, we may see it.
- 28:07Speaker 6: I don't know, but that's the way it works sometimes.
- 28:10Speaker 6: But I think runs would be tough to come by.
- 28:12Speaker 6: I'm with you. The starting rotation is outstanding. I can
- 28:14Speaker 6: tell you tonight, I'd hate to be one of the
- 28:16Speaker 6: first three or four hitters because these guys are going
- 28:17Speaker 6: to be throwing about 110, I think, in the first
- 28:20Speaker 6: couple innings, maybe hitting a bottom third, get them down
- 28:22Speaker 6: velocity wise. But There's some elite pitching on both sides,
- 28:26Speaker 6: so it's going to be a challenge, I think, for
- 28:28Speaker 6: both teams. That's why I think scoring early is going
- 28:31Speaker 6: to be very important in this series.
- 28:33Speaker 3: You know Peyton Tolley. You cover the Red Sox on
- 28:35Speaker 3: a daily basis. He's kind of this breakout star, the mustache,
- 28:38Speaker 3: the character. He's one of those guys that you're like,
- 28:40Speaker 3: I wish he was on my team. Plus, he's obviously
- 28:42Speaker 3: a great pitcher. When a guy like that has that
- 28:45Speaker 3: type of tone, you played with guys like that back
- 28:47Speaker 3: in the old days. How loose does that make a
- 28:49Speaker 3: ball club going into the playoffs?
- 28:51Speaker 6: Well, it's nothing like seeing a guy in game one
- 28:52Speaker 6: starter in Yankee Stadium kind of joking and laughing before
- 28:55Speaker 6: a game and just looking at him going, OK, everything's
- 28:57Speaker 6: the same, right? Like this is the same guy because
- 29:00Speaker 6: you're right.
- 29:00Speaker 2: He's a tough guy to hate.
- 29:01Speaker 6: I mean, I know Yankee fans may not like him
- 29:03Speaker 6: if he goes out and throws the ball real well.
- 29:05Speaker 6: But if you know this guy, you'd root for him.
- 29:07Speaker 6: He plays with joy. He's always smiling. He's joking. He's
- 29:10Speaker 6: laughing on the mound. And when that glove comes up
- 29:12Speaker 6: to his face, it's game on. I mean, he tries
- 29:14Speaker 6: to bully you. So it's great to see. It's refreshing
- 29:18Speaker 6: to see. And hopefully he never changes because it's a
- 29:20Speaker 6: lot of fun.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Lou, take us back to the spring and early summer.
- 29:24Speaker 2: It really didn't look good for the Red Sox. Was
- 29:27Speaker 2: there any reason for hope back then? Did you see
- 29:29Speaker 2: any of this coming?
- 29:31Speaker 6: Well, I remember back then it was like you're 10,
- 29:33Speaker 6: 14 games under. 500 and you're saying, you know, this
- 29:35Speaker 6: normally doesn't happen when you look at a team that
- 29:38Speaker 6: is one of the best defensively. team in the American
- 29:41Speaker 6: League that has a very good rotation and a lights-out
- 29:45Speaker 6: back end at a bullpen. Like, that type of team
- 29:48Speaker 6: should not be the worst team in baseball in the
- 29:50Speaker 6: American League.
- 29:50Speaker 7: They should not.
- 29:51Speaker 6: be 14 games under. But the offense at the time
- 29:54Speaker 6: was so bad, especially at Fenway Park. They couldn't get
- 29:58Speaker 6: that big hit. They couldn't get the run in the score.
- 30:00Speaker 6: They were averaging two, two and a half runs a
- 30:01Speaker 6: game at Fenway, which is unheard of. So you say,
- 30:05Speaker 6: but are there answers here offensively? Who's going to come
- 30:08Speaker 6: to the rescue? Where's the difference? Where's the changing going
- 30:11Speaker 6: to take place? And I think as a whole, they
- 30:13Speaker 6: just grinded out at bats. They had tougher at bats.
- 30:15Speaker 6: They started getting those big hits. And when the offense
- 30:18Speaker 6: went from scoring two and a half to three runs
- 30:20Speaker 6: a game to four and a half, five That elite pitching,
- 30:22Speaker 6: that elite defense allowed them to go on that run.
- 30:24Speaker 6: So you could see it, but you were questioning where
- 30:27Speaker 6: that offense could come from.
- 30:28Speaker 3: All right, the series before yours, the White Sox are playing,
- 30:30Speaker 3: and they're a bit of a feel-good story. 121 losses
- 30:33Speaker 3: two years ago. When you look at a team like that,
- 30:36Speaker 3: I don't know if America thinks they can go on
- 30:38Speaker 3: a run. It's like, oh, good for you, kind of cute.
- 30:39Speaker 3: You saw them play a lot during the regular season.
- 30:42Speaker 3: What do you think of the White Sox' chances to
- 30:43Speaker 3: advance even one round?
- 30:45Speaker 6: Well, you know, the thing is, that's part of the
- 30:46Speaker 6: whole Red Sox when they got hot. They rolled into Chicago.
- 30:49Speaker 6: They came into Fenway Park, and the Red Sox beat them.
- 30:51Speaker 6: They were 6-0, you know, and they kind of walked
- 30:53Speaker 6: through them a little bit. There were some tight games there. So,
- 30:55Speaker 6: you know, I was actually surprised. I've been on some
- 30:58Speaker 6: of those teams. Like, I was, I think it was 0-4.
- 31:00Speaker 6: I was in Cleveland, and we had a great young
- 31:02Speaker 6: group of guys, and young Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner
- 31:05Speaker 6: and CeCe and all these guys. But we were young,
- 31:08Speaker 6: and it really kind of affected us. Like, in August,
- 31:11Speaker 6: when we started getting to that race, and we just
- 31:13Speaker 6: really fell off. That's why I was really impressed with
- 31:16Speaker 6: what the White Sox did. They held on, right? They
- 31:17Speaker 6: rolled into Chicago and won a series in Detroit late
- 31:20Speaker 6: in the seasons and really held that spot. So it
- 31:23Speaker 6: was impressive. It's just you wonder, you know, they're in
- 31:26Speaker 6: the right bracket, I will say that, but you wonder,
- 31:29Speaker 6: you know, how far that pitching could take them. The
- 31:31Speaker 6: offense has been fantastic.
- 31:32Speaker 2: All right, Lou, do you have a prediction who comes
- 31:34Speaker 2: out of the American League? Well, let's see. I grew
- 31:37Speaker 2: up just outside of Boston.
- 31:38Speaker 6: I played there for 10 years and now I do
- 31:41Speaker 6: 120 games for the Red Sox on Nesson. So and
- 31:43Speaker 6: I'm not so sure if I'm supposed to give predictions
- 31:45Speaker 6: right before the game. But I listen to the Red Sox.
- 31:49Speaker 6: I think the Rays are the best team in the
- 31:51Speaker 6: American League. That doesn't mean that they will win it, right?
- 31:55Speaker 6: Because this is baseball. This is the 2026 season. So
- 31:59Speaker 6: I'm very impressed with watching them. And I think Red Sox, Yankees,
- 32:01Speaker 6: I just think it's coming out of that bracket. You know,
- 32:04Speaker 6: it's just coming out of that bracket. Obviously, I'm a
- 32:05Speaker 6: little biased.
- 32:06Speaker 3: All right, Lou, before we get you out of here.
- 32:07Speaker 3: By the way, it's great to see you again. It's
- 32:09Speaker 3: been a long time. We do a thing here called
- 32:11Speaker 3: Such Thing is a Dumb Question. We did not play baseball.
- 32:14Speaker 3: When you watch baseball movies, they always tell the kid,
- 32:16Speaker 3: get hit by a pitch. Were you ever told when
- 32:18Speaker 3: you played in the pros... Get hit by a pitch,
- 32:21Speaker 3: or did you ever intentionally get hit by a pitch
- 32:23Speaker 3: and get congratulated by your manager and your teammates?
- 32:26Speaker 6: Well, I would say I was never told to get
- 32:28Speaker 6: hit by a pitch, but for me at times when
- 32:31Speaker 6: it was two strikes, I mean, I wasn't exactly moving.
- 32:33Speaker 6: You know, two strikes, I'm trying to get on base. Like,
- 32:37Speaker 6: that was my role. You know, I was utility guy
- 32:40Speaker 6: for the team. When I played, get on base. If
- 32:42Speaker 6: it's two strikes and it's a breaking ball or a fastball,
- 32:45Speaker 6: I just sort of turn that arm and take it
- 32:46Speaker 6: and move on.
- 32:47Speaker 2: And then, yeah, and then it's just like, hey, good job.
- 32:50Speaker 2: You know, wearing one.
- 32:52Speaker 3: When you're running down to first base, do you act
- 32:53Speaker 3: like it hurts, like it was a total accident?
- 32:57Speaker 6: No, I think you want to sort of act like
- 32:59Speaker 6: it doesn't hurt, right? But sometimes you just can't help
- 33:03Speaker 6: it because it gets you in the right spot where
- 33:05Speaker 6: you're trying to be the tough guy, but it got
- 33:07Speaker 6: you pretty good.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Lou, we're working on our stances. This is Mike Schmidt. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:11Speaker 2: We got a lot of work to do. And you
- 33:13Speaker 2: have a lot of work tonight. I think everyone will
- 33:15Speaker 2: be watching 8 p.m. Eastern, Red Sox, Yankees. Have a
- 33:18Speaker 2: great time tonight. All right. Appreciate it, guys. Enjoy. Oh, man.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Lou got me fired up for that because, you know,
- 33:24Speaker 2: he knows this rivalry. It's been a little cooler in
- 33:27Speaker 2: recent years, but this series, because it's so evenly matched,
- 33:30Speaker 2: I feel like it's back on in a big way.
- 33:32Speaker 3: It doesn't feel like either one of them is a heavyweight.
- 33:34Speaker 3: Back in the day, it would be the Dodgers- Sox, Yankees,
- 33:37Speaker 3: and maybe one other. It feels like Sox, Yankees, they're
- 33:41Speaker 3: just a little down from where they were a decade ago.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Well, yeah. I mean, especially tonight because there's no judge. Yes.
- 33:46Speaker 2: But that makes it even better because it's going to
- 33:47Speaker 2: be so evenly matched. I can't wait. Of course, as again,
- 33:50Speaker 2: 8 p.m. Eastern tonight on NBC and Peacock. All right.
- 33:55Speaker 2: But coming up next, we're going to hear more from
- 33:57Speaker 2: the Bears-Eagles game. My guy, Case Keenum, with the night.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Although he did have the Minneapolis miracle, but we'll break
- 34:04Speaker 2: it all down next. Not so fast.
- 34:12Speaker 6: The Yankees without Aaron Judge means what for that lineup?
- 34:15Speaker 7: You're leaning on Schlittler. You're leaning on Cole. I can't
- 34:18Speaker 7: stand it. And I don't think he's going to be back.
- 34:21Speaker 7: If he can't play now, he's clearly... not going to
- 34:25Speaker 7: be useful throughout the entirety of the playoffs if they
- 34:27Speaker 7: do happen to go deep into the playoffs. If you're
- 34:30Speaker 7: hurt and you can't play, and I watched a bunch
- 34:32Speaker 7: of his live at-bats yesterday, and you can't play in
- 34:34Speaker 7: the first series, what's he going to be, 50%, 75%
- 34:39Speaker 7: come the ALCS or the World Series? It's a huge
- 34:44Speaker 7: hit to that roster because their offense is mediocre at best.
- 34:48Speaker 7: They may be one of the bottom five offenses in
- 34:51Speaker 7: all of baseball without Aaron Judge.
- 34:53Speaker 3: Back on Not So Fast, Paxton Perloff. Baseball playoffs start
- 34:56Speaker 3: today on NBC Sports. All day, 10 hours plus of baseball.
- 35:00Speaker 3: That's Joey Votto. If I'm a Yankees fan and I
- 35:02Speaker 3: heard that, now he was told moments before about the injury,
- 35:06Speaker 3: so that was his real reaction. That doesn't sound good.
- 35:09Speaker 2: No, that does sound bad, but it's funny. We had
- 35:11Speaker 2: Lou Merloni, of course, the Red Sox guy in the
- 35:13Speaker 2: last segment. He's like, well, I'm glad Judge isn't playing
- 35:15Speaker 2: because he would have hit two or three home runs.
- 35:17Speaker 2: When you see Judge at the plate, that man mountain,
- 35:20Speaker 2: you just have a feeling that he still could hit
- 35:22Speaker 2: a home run. So I'm not sure I agree with
- 35:25Speaker 2: Votto in the sense I take 65% of Aaron Judge
- 35:28Speaker 2: right now. The Yankees need him.
- 35:29Speaker 3: I read this article about Aaron Judge. It's from like
- 35:31Speaker 3: seven years ago, and it was talking about his future.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Once he hits like 28, they said, being that tall
- 35:36Speaker 3: and with that long swing, He's not going to be
- 35:38Speaker 3: that good after age 28 or 29. Not so fast
- 35:41Speaker 3: on that one.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Well, you know what? He's been awesome. I mean, I'm
- 35:44Speaker 2: going to out you. Pre-show, you started to wonder. He's 34.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 35:48Speaker 3: Yeah, he's 34. He feels younger than that.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, would you bet on him for the
- 35:51Speaker 2: next six years?
- 35:54Speaker 3: I don't think you have a choice if you're the Yankees. Financially,
- 35:56Speaker 3: they're already kind of committed to him. But there's a
- 35:58Speaker 3: guy where he's going to go down in history in
- 36:00Speaker 3: some fashion. whether it be a disappointment. Not a disappointment personally,
- 36:04Speaker 3: but if he doesn't win a World Series.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Disappointment because he's so great that if he didn't get
- 36:07Speaker 2: all the way, absolutely.
- 36:08Speaker 3: He may get that quarterback treatment of the guy who
- 36:10Speaker 3: does not win the title.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Well, Barry Bonds never won, and he's still legendary for
- 36:14Speaker 2: a couple reasons.
- 36:15Speaker 4: A couple reasons.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Joey Votto, by the way, he's one of my favorite
- 36:18Speaker 2: guests with Dan. He's got incredible chemistry. He had another
- 36:21Speaker 2: take about how cool it is to see left-handed batters.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Dan actually asked me about that. I am so on board.
- 36:27Speaker 3: What is this based on?
- 36:29Speaker 2: Well, it's because everyone loves Ken Griffey, right? Ken Griffey
- 36:32Speaker 2: and A-Rod were in Seattle together in the 90s. Nobody
- 36:34Speaker 2: cared about A-Rod. It was all about Griffey's beautiful swing.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Of course, Ted Williams. Votto said the lefties have more
- 36:40Speaker 2: of an uppercut. I like watching lefties do anything. I
- 36:42Speaker 2: don't care if it's Michael Penix Jr. I don't care
- 36:45Speaker 2: if it's Harold Miner. Give me a left. Chris Mullen.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Any left-handed athlete, to me, it's just more interesting to
- 36:51Speaker 2: watch them play.
- 36:52Speaker 3: I wonder if this comes back to childhood where lefties
- 36:54Speaker 3: felt special. Remember you being flasked? And someone would go,
- 36:57Speaker 3: I'm left-handed. You're like, oh, that kid's left-handed. It feels
- 37:00Speaker 3: like they're special without actually accomplishing anything.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Well, to me, the prettiest swing in baseball is Bryce Harper.
- 37:05Speaker 2: It's just when he gets a hold of one, it's beautiful.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Kyle Schwarber's not far behind. It doesn't even matter if
- 37:10Speaker 2: they're on my team or not, if they're Phillies. I
- 37:12Speaker 2: love left-handed hitters. And Votto is so funny talking about that.
- 37:16Speaker 2: He is so cool. And the outfit, I was like,
- 37:18Speaker 2: where is this Joey Votto? Is he going to a
- 37:20Speaker 2: prom or something? He looked pretty good.
- 37:22Speaker 3: All right, let's go back to Monday Night Football last night,
- 37:24Speaker 3: career night for Case Keenum. unbelievable night for the bears, 27,
- 37:28Speaker 3: seven over the Eagles. And here's a little bit of
- 37:29Speaker 3: case Keenum after the game.
- 37:31Speaker 5: Playing well, anytime in your career feels good, um, to
- 37:36Speaker 5: do it on Monday night football. Um, after, uh, after you,
- 37:41Speaker 5: you thought you weren't ever going to play again, multiple times. Um, golly, um,
- 37:50Speaker 5: this is special. Uh, it's really special. Uh, and I
- 37:52Speaker 5: don't know if I'll be able to put it into words, uh,
- 37:55Speaker 5: tonight um but i'm gonna enjoy it tonight that's for sure.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Yeah i love to see our buddy case keenum doing
- 38:02Speaker 2: so well you know what stands out it's obviously the
- 38:05Speaker 2: humility he's you know some quarterbacks win and just be
- 38:08Speaker 2: like oh you know this is what i do you
- 38:10Speaker 2: can tell he wears emotions on the sleeve he was
- 38:12Speaker 2: as happy as the fans were.
- 38:14Speaker 3: Yeah and if you go if you look at it
- 38:15Speaker 3: from a reality standpoint if you're a bears fan and
- 38:17Speaker 3: you're thinking about advancing this season in the playoffs further
- 38:19Speaker 3: than you did last year This could be a big game,
- 38:21Speaker 3: and the next two games could be huge because you
- 38:23Speaker 3: took a loss and made it to a win with
- 38:26Speaker 3: a third-string quarterback. And if somehow they just barely sneak
- 38:29Speaker 3: in the playoffs, Case will be remembered for that, for
- 38:31Speaker 3: riding the ship for two or three weeks.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Absolutely. It's a huge deal. It's a conference game. You
- 38:36Speaker 2: know what? It also was a statement. Ben Johnson and
- 38:38Speaker 2: Dennis Allen, the defensive coordinator, that's an elite coaching staff.
- 38:41Speaker 2: People said Ben Johnson's never done it with a backup,
- 38:44Speaker 2: but there he did.
- 38:44Speaker 3: By the way, bonus coverage. Big guy, big moment last night.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Joe Tooney, the offensive left guard for the Bears. Case
- 38:51Speaker 3: Keenan should thank him. Watch this play on the blitz.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Watch Tooney, top of your screen. He is about to
- 38:55Speaker 3: get de-cleated, and that one forearm, complete pass for a
- 38:58Speaker 3: first down here. Great job by Joe Tooney. We feature
- 39:02Speaker 3: the big guys here on Not So Fast.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Oh, love it. Love it. I can't believe Case kept
- 39:05Speaker 2: saying it in the pocket with Jalen Carter coming at him.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Good job all around. All right, speaking of Philly, LeBron
- 39:12Speaker 2: made his sort of debut yesterday, said lots of stuff,
- 39:16Speaker 2: and explained kind of why he wanted to go to
- 39:18Speaker 2: the 76ers.
- 39:20Speaker 4: We have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. That is
- 39:22Speaker 4: the best way to expedite being great. You have to
- 39:26Speaker 4: fall in love with doing things that's uncomfortable. And if
- 39:29Speaker 4: we can do that, then we can be a great team.
- 39:33Speaker 4: If we don't do that, then we'll be like, oh man,
- 39:36Speaker 4: it was a great team on paper and we had
- 39:37Speaker 4: a lot of great talent and we lost in the
- 39:40Speaker 4: second round.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Like, I.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Don't want to do that. I didn't leave my family
- 39:46Speaker 4: to lose in the second round. I know that for sure. So,
- 39:49Speaker 4: Work needs to be done, and I'm ready to put
- 39:52Speaker 4: the work in.
- 39:53Speaker 3: By the way, I'm not 100% sure what he's talking
- 39:55Speaker 3: about there, but all I know is he looks really
- 39:56Speaker 3: cool in the Philadelphia uniform, and I like bald LeBron
- 39:59Speaker 3: a lot better than holding onto the hair LeBron. It's
- 40:01Speaker 3: like he said, it's over, Johnny. Let's call it. call
- 40:04Speaker 3: my guy, shave it down, streamline for the 2026 season. Well, yeah,
- 40:08Speaker 3: I mean.
- 40:09Speaker 2: He has not let himself go in this league.
- 40:11Speaker 3: No, he looks like he works out.
- 40:12Speaker 2: He looks like he's 25, which is incredible. But I
- 40:14Speaker 2: know what he's talking about. On paper, you put Joel Embiid,
- 40:17Speaker 2: LeBron James, Jalen Brown, Tyrese Maxey. That's pretty crazy on paper,
- 40:22Speaker 2: but it's so on paper. There, that photo alone, I
- 40:26Speaker 2: don't know.
- 40:26Speaker 3: Do you think people are going to root for this team?
- 40:28Speaker 3: I find them interesting, and I'm definitely going to watch them.
- 40:31Speaker 3: I'm curious if the casual fan... roots for the Sixers.
- 40:34Speaker 2: I think it's confusing because I don't think a lot
- 40:36Speaker 2: of people don't like LeBron. I'd say it's 50-50. You
- 40:38Speaker 2: either love LeBron or you don't like him.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Brown is polarizing.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Brown, a little less so. I think everyone loves Tyrese.
- 40:44Speaker 2: If you know who Tyrese Maxey is and B.J. Edgecombe,
- 40:47Speaker 2: everyone loves him.
- 40:47Speaker 3: And Bede when he plays.
- 40:48Speaker 2: I don't know anybody. Is Embiid popular out of town?
- 40:50Speaker 2: There aren't a lot of kids who walk around in
- 40:52Speaker 2: Embiid jerseys. No one wants to be the big man.
- 40:54Speaker 3: In my neighborhood, they're all in Embiid jerseys. All right,
- 40:56Speaker 3: let's get to it. John Harbaugh, the head coach of
- 40:58Speaker 3: the Giants, acquired a new quarterback yesterday. We talked about
- 41:01Speaker 3: that on Not So Fast, but He talked a little
- 41:03Speaker 3: more about it after practice.
- 41:06Speaker 8: Really glad, really happy, very excited to add J.J.
- 41:10Speaker 2: McCarthy.
- 41:10Speaker 8: I think he's a strong young quarterback, has some experience
- 41:15Speaker 8: in the National Football League, obviously was a very high
- 41:18Speaker 8: draft pick, very talented player, and is going to make
- 41:21Speaker 8: us a stronger football team. So excited about it. I
- 41:24Speaker 8: think it makes us better.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Wow. Okay, so obviously this is a favor. Is it
- 41:29Speaker 2: an older brother or a younger brother? Is Jim older?
- 41:31Speaker 2: He's older, right?
- 41:32Speaker 3: I think Jim's older.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Jim's older. He's doing a favor. Jim Harbaugh and J.J.
- 41:35Speaker 2: McCarthy tied at the hip in Michigan. John calls Jim
- 41:38Speaker 2: and said, what's the deal with McCarthy? I know Jim
- 41:41Speaker 2: Harbaugh loves him. So John sees something here. Fifth round
- 41:45Speaker 2: pick's not going to kill you.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think this is a favor between brothers
- 41:47Speaker 3: as much as it's like, I could take this risk
- 41:49Speaker 3: because what if Jackson Dart has knee issues that go
- 41:52Speaker 3: on for longer? There's no future with Jameis Winston. This
- 41:55Speaker 3: guy had a rookie year and a second year after
- 41:57Speaker 3: the injuries, I should say, where he made some great throws,
- 42:01Speaker 3: but he didn't make normal throws. He didn't make easy throws.
- 42:04Speaker 3: This guy is a fastball guy with no curveball and
- 42:07Speaker 3: no off-speed pitch. I think that could be worked on.
- 42:09Speaker 3: I think John Harbaugh thinks... This guy's 23 years old.
- 42:12Speaker 3: I'm getting him for almost nothing.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Why not? I don't see it. I think his accuracy
- 42:17Speaker 2: is not going to be fixed. 57%. That's my problem,
- 42:21Speaker 2: and I think a lot of people are like this.
- 42:22Speaker 2: A fifth-round pick is something, but generally I don't see
- 42:25Speaker 2: him as more than a career backup, which might be fine.
- 42:26Speaker 2: I don't think you have a problem with that.
- 42:28Speaker 3: I brought this up on the Dan Patrick Show. This
- 42:29Speaker 3: rookie year stats or first 10-game stats of J.J. McCarthy
- 42:32Speaker 3: and Josh Allen are almost simultaneous.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Josh Allen was terrible as a rookie.
- 42:36Speaker 3: He was terrible, but then, of course, he has the
- 42:38Speaker 3: running ability, as Dan mentioned. But I think there is
- 42:40Speaker 3: a chance, but it's not going to be instantaneous. And
- 42:43Speaker 3: I don't think he should play in the next four weeks.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think accuracy cannot always be taught in the NFL.
- 42:49Speaker 2: So that's my big issue. The issue is he never
- 42:51Speaker 2: should have been a first-round pick. I think DP said
- 42:53Speaker 2: that today. All he did was hand the ball off
- 42:56Speaker 2: to Michigan. We never saw him in a passing offense. Now,
- 42:58Speaker 2: it was a pro style in Michigan, but nothing like
- 43:00Speaker 2: what he has to do now. If Kevin O'Connell can't
- 43:03Speaker 2: make anything out of him, how are the Giants going
- 43:05Speaker 2: to do it?
- 43:05Speaker 3: Yeah, they just want him out of the building. All right,
- 43:07Speaker 3: coming up next. More baseball. We're going to get to
- 43:09Speaker 3: our wild card picks. We're going to get to constructive
- 43:12Speaker 3: criticism and the feel good. Stick around. Not so fast.
- 43:14Speaker 3: Right after the break.
- 43:14Speaker 2: All right. We're back on Not So Fast. NBC Sports Now. Peacock.
- 43:19Speaker 2: All right. Every week we do the NFL and college
- 43:22Speaker 2: football play of the season. Right now, Paul, we have
- 43:26Speaker 2: a strong contender at the top of the mountain. Of course,
- 43:28Speaker 2: that is the Jamar Chase team. catch against the Texans,
- 43:32Speaker 2: I believe, in the corner of the end zone. I've
- 43:34Speaker 2: seen this play replayed so many times already. Jamar Chase
- 43:37Speaker 2: twists and turns, tracks the ball. Only he can do this.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Arguably the best receiver in the NFL. This is going
- 43:43Speaker 2: to be tough to beat.
- 43:43Speaker 3: The more I watch it, the better it gets. He
- 43:45Speaker 3: actually got pushed right before he had to make the turn.
- 43:48Speaker 3: That seems impossible even in regular motion.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Yeah, but for Jamar Chase, I guess it is possible.
- 43:53Speaker 2: All right, this week's contender coming out of the San
- 43:56Speaker 2: Francisco 49ers. We got a little hook and ladder. Oh,
- 44:00Speaker 2: you got to love that play. Debo Samuel runs it in.
- 44:03Speaker 2: I mean, it was against a Cardinals team that did
- 44:05Speaker 2: not show up at all on Sunday. But I love
- 44:07Speaker 2: this play, and I love Debo. It looks like he's 25.
- 44:10Speaker 2: He's played great.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Are you a hook and ladder guy or hook and
- 44:12Speaker 3: lateral guy? Because I don't know which one is correct.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Are they interchangeable? Oh, I don't know. I call it
- 44:18Speaker 2: the hook and ladder. Is it called the hook and lateral?
- 44:20Speaker 3: I think it's the hook and lateral, but people use
- 44:22Speaker 3: hook and ladder because, shout out to the fighter.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Isn't the most famous one Miami Dolphins way back in
- 44:28Speaker 2: the day? I feel like Dan Marino to Duper and Clayton.
- 44:31Speaker 3: The running back was Tony Nathan for the Miami Dolphins
- 44:34Speaker 3: who caught the hook and lateral.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Okay, so who do you think should win? Is it
- 44:38Speaker 2: Jamar Chase or Debo in the hook and lateral?
- 44:40Speaker 3: I think we're staying with Chase. That thing's freakish.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree. It's got to be Jamar Chase. That
- 44:46Speaker 2: is one of the greatest catches I've seen. Not quite
- 44:49Speaker 2: Odell Beckham one-handed, but it's not far behind. And Debo,
- 44:53Speaker 2: he didn't really have to do that much work. He
- 44:55Speaker 2: outran the Cardinals.
- 44:56Speaker 3: It didn't even count as a catch for him. He
- 44:57Speaker 3: didn't even get a reception on the play. But, you know,
- 45:00Speaker 3: he looks pretty fast. You want to hit some baseball?
- 45:01Speaker 2: Yeah, let's get into it.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Okay, here we go. Baseball playoffs later today. NBC Sports, Peacock, NBCSN.
- 45:08Speaker 1: All day.
- 45:08Speaker 3: Tune in. Braves over Phillies. I'm going Braves over the Phillies.
- 45:12Speaker 3: They are so due. Chris Sale, this is career recovery time.
- 45:16Speaker 3: I think he's going to pitch a four-hitter.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I like the Braves in the series, but I
- 45:20Speaker 2: think it's going to be close. The Phillies just aren't
- 45:21Speaker 2: hitting right now, at least not consistently. But the Braves
- 45:24Speaker 2: don't have much besides Chris Sale. I'm not sure if
- 45:27Speaker 2: either team is a World Series team.
- 45:28Speaker 3: I'm going to go White Sox over Astros. Astros don't
- 45:31Speaker 3: look very good. They've been outscored all season. I think
- 45:33Speaker 3: the White Sox have a wild card victory in them,
- 45:36Speaker 3: two games out of three. I don't know if they're
- 45:38Speaker 3: going to go much further than that, but it's a
- 45:39Speaker 3: feel-good story.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Yeah, if you pitch around Jordan Alvarez, what else is there? Astros,
- 45:43Speaker 2: the worst division winner of all time. I'm going White Sox.
- 45:46Speaker 3: I'm going to pick Red Sox over the Yankees, mostly
- 45:48Speaker 3: because of Peyton Tolley's mustache. It's fantastic. I want to
- 45:51Speaker 3: see more of this guy. But the Judge thing, that's
- 45:53Speaker 3: a hit. That's a big hit. I mean, no pun intended.
- 45:56Speaker 3: That's where, if you're a Red Sox fan, if you're
- 45:58Speaker 3: a Red Sox player, this is it. This is your
- 46:00Speaker 3: opening in a season where you never thought you'd be here.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going Yankees. I like Schlittler. I like, obviously,
- 46:05Speaker 2: Garrett Cole. So I think pitching actually carries them until
- 46:09Speaker 2: Judge can get back, if Judge gets back.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Last one, believe it or not, I am going the
- 46:13Speaker 3: Padres over the Cubs. Shota in the playoffs, I'm worried
- 46:16Speaker 3: about with the Cubs. Their bullpen hasn't done anything almost
- 46:20Speaker 3: all season. They have to hit their way out of this,
- 46:22Speaker 3: and if they're not in the lead and the ball
- 46:23Speaker 3: goes to Mason Miller, I feel terrible about the Cubs' chance.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Yeah, is this a location, location, location thing? I'm picking
- 46:28Speaker 2: the Padres, too. I don't know. PCA kind of choked
- 46:33Speaker 2: last year. He's got to do a lot here. This
- 46:35Speaker 2: is one of the most interesting series to me. There's
- 46:37Speaker 2: so many stars to watch in this series. I feel
- 46:40Speaker 2: like three games is not enough.
- 46:41Speaker 3: I wish it was a five-gamer. All right, let's get
- 46:43Speaker 3: to a little constructive criticism. Your feedback on how we're doing,
- 46:46Speaker 3: what we're doing, what we're wearing. Perloff, the first one
- 46:49Speaker 3: coming up here is... Here we go. If Andrew Perloff
- 46:53Speaker 3: put on a Bears uniform, doesn't he look like Case Keenum?
- 46:56Speaker 3: Like a stretched out Ivy League Case Keenum?
- 46:58Speaker 2: So something weird happened on social media last night, and
- 47:01Speaker 2: I can explain this. They're talking about you, Paul. You
- 47:03Speaker 2: look like Case Keenum. If you put on a Bears uniform.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Me?
- 47:06Speaker 2: Yes. You look a lot like Case Keenum. Because last night,
- 47:10Speaker 2: how many people said, Paul, someone sent a social media message, Paul,
- 47:14Speaker 2: did you write a book with Case Keenum? Which I
- 47:16Speaker 2: replied to, he sure did.
- 47:17Speaker 3: So you wrote the book, I Look Like Him.
- 47:19Speaker 2: You, of course, you think I look at, I don't
- 47:21Speaker 2: look at anything like Case Keenum. I was going to say.
- 47:23Speaker 2: I think you look a lot, I mean, who's the
- 47:24Speaker 2: coach that you're a total doppelganger for? That's not me,
- 47:27Speaker 2: that's you.
- 47:28Speaker 3: I look like Pat Fitzgerald of Michigan State without 20
- 47:31Speaker 3: pounds less, less jacked.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, you're starting to sort of veer a
- 47:35Speaker 2: little bit because Pat Fitzgerald keeps on putting on weight.
- 47:37Speaker 2: I don't want to be mean. But yeah, you look
- 47:39Speaker 2: exactly like him. You look closer to Case. I do
- 47:41Speaker 2: not look anything like Case.
- 47:42Speaker 3: All right, let's stay on the same topic because it's
- 47:44Speaker 3: time for the feel good. And there's only one to
- 47:46Speaker 3: choose from from last night. It was Case Keenum night.
- 47:49Speaker 3: It was as good as it gets before the game,
- 47:51Speaker 3: after the game. The kneel down. The Bears fans going berserk. Oh,
- 47:56Speaker 3: and look at this. The kids, Van Pelt. People staying
- 48:02Speaker 3: in the stadium to hug him.
- 48:04Speaker 2: I mean, that is almost like Justin Berlander's daughter running
- 48:07Speaker 2: out to the mound when Berlander retired. As two daughters,
- 48:11Speaker 2: I get really emotional.
- 48:12Speaker 3: He ran around like Cal Ripken for 18 minutes. He
- 48:15Speaker 3: was like doing laps in the stadium.
- 48:17Speaker 2: And he did a lot of very interesting and funny
- 48:19Speaker 2: post-game interviews. Do you like bringing the kids out after
- 48:23Speaker 2: a Week 3 win? You know what?
- 48:24Speaker 3: You have nothing to apologize for. It's a Week 3 win.
- 48:27Speaker 3: You didn't think you were going to play it down
- 48:28Speaker 3: this year if all went right with Bears football. This
- 48:31Speaker 3: is an all bets are off game with Case Keenum.
- 48:33Speaker 2: So he had a funny comment. He said, I'm going
- 48:36Speaker 2: to watch the game again with him tomorrow. I'm sure
- 48:38Speaker 2: they'll get bored after two plays and want to put
- 48:40Speaker 2: on Bluey.
- 48:40Speaker 3: Yeah, put on Bubble Guppies.
- 48:42Speaker 2: All right, tune in.
- 48:43Speaker 3: Baseball playoffs all day right here on NBC4. Tune in today.
- 48:46Speaker 3: We'll recap them tomorrow right here on Not So Fast
- 48:49Speaker 3: and the Dan Patrick Show.
- 48:50Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Enjoy the baseball.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Take care. Go Bills.
