- 0:24Speaker 1: From Darrell K. Royal, Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, it's
- 0:28Speaker 1: the season opener. The 2026 college football season begins today
- 0:32Speaker 1: with the Texas Longhorns taking on the Texas State Bobcats.
- 0:37Speaker 1: On first down, with Smothers the running back, Manning will
- 0:40Speaker 1: take the snap from under center, turns, hands it.
- 0:42Speaker 2: To Hollywood Smothers, sweeps outside, breaks free to the.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Left side across midfield. Down the sidelines, the 30, 25, 20, 15,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and near the 10-yard line. nifty moves by Hollywood Smothers
- 0:55Speaker 1: before Amari and Atwood ran him down but he'll take
- 0:58Speaker 1: it all the way down close to the 10 yard
- 1:01Speaker 1: line and it will be first down for Texas what
- 1:04Speaker 1: a huge run all the way down to the 11
- 1:07Speaker 1: yard line so it is a game of 45 yards.
- 1:10Speaker 2: On third down and five, Brown shifts to the left
- 1:13Speaker 2: side of Manning, arch for the snap, back the throw,
- 1:15Speaker 2: lofts it in the.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Corner, and he ends on there to make the catch
- 1:18Speaker 1: for the touchdown. Ken Coleman, his first touchdown as a
- 1:22Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns, and the Longhorns score for the first time
- 1:26Speaker 1: in 2026.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Manning out of his shotgun. Raleigh Brown offset to his left.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Turns and sweeping back to the left side is Wingo
- 1:34Speaker 1: to the 5, to the goal line. Touchdown, Texas. Ryan Wingo,
- 1:37Speaker 1: a little jet sweep action to the left side. Takes
- 1:40Speaker 1: it across for his first score of the brand new season.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Raleigh Brown gets the toss to the left side. Turns inside,
- 1:47Speaker 1: a 15-team 5-2. Early foul, picked up two huge blocks,
- 1:53Speaker 1: he turned that play in the alley for his first
- 1:56Speaker 1: touchdown as a Longhorn. It's a handoff, Atkins, Adachi Atkins,
- 1:59Speaker 1: the ball's loose, picked up, picking.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Up the fumble and bringing it down to the 30,
- 2:06Speaker 3: to the 20, Grayson Littlewood, touchdown Texas! The ball just
- 2:10Speaker 3: popped out, got knocked loose, Littlewood just scooped it up
- 2:13Speaker 3: and took it to the house.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Manning from the gun. Has to snap. March back to
- 2:17Speaker 1: throw with some time.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Looking.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Going to throw it deep. Down the left sideline. He's
- 2:21Speaker 1: got Wingo open.
- 2:21Speaker 5: Right in the gaps.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Inside the 29-ounce. Wingo just flew past the corner. Craig Royal.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And takes it downfield. Will mark him out at the
- 2:33Speaker 1: 22-yard line. Line up for the pistol. And Manning looks
- 2:37Speaker 1: to throw third and two down the sidelines, looking for
- 2:40Speaker 1: and making the catch right along the boundary is Coleman.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Kim Coleman targeted it all the way. Amari and Atwood
- 2:47Speaker 1: have the coverage, but Coleman hauls it in down at
- 2:50Speaker 1: the Texas State 23-yard.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Line is where they'll mark that. It's a 39-yard strike.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Manning from the shotgun, arched with a snap.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Looking, still looking, sends it over the middle, Coleman, a catch,
- 3:01Speaker 3: and a touchdown.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Cam Coleman leaping into the air, pulls it down for
- 3:06Speaker 1: his first touchdown as a Texas Longhorn, a 20-yard strike.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Looking over the Texas defense, has the snap back. The
- 3:13Speaker 1: pro looks, steps up the pocket. He'll go down. Ball loose.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Longhorns have it. Colin Simmons recovers it.
- 3:20Speaker 2: They strip the ball from Brad Jackson, and Texas will
- 3:25Speaker 2: take over in Texas State territory. Has the snap.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Looks to throw. Swings it out to Hollywood Smothers. A
- 3:32Speaker 1: catch at the 10. Makes a move to the 5.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Smothers to the goal line.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Touchdown, Texas. On third down and 13 from a 14-yard line.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Smothers.
- 3:44Speaker 1: A catch. A waggle. A wiggle. And in for the score.
- 3:48Speaker 2: He has Raleigh Brown offset to his right. Two receivers
- 3:50Speaker 2: wide left. One on the short side split right.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Has the snap. Turns hands off to Brown. Breaks outside.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Raleigh Brown.
- 3:56Speaker 6: Touchdown, Texas.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Sprints that one into the end zone.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Does Raleigh Brown his second rushing touchdown of the ballgame.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Good snap and hold. Spedic's kick on the way, and
- 4:09Speaker 1: the kick is good. Knocks it through to Spedic. So
- 4:14Speaker 1: his first try kicking for the Longhorns is on the
- 4:18Speaker 1: field goal side. Goes through from the seven-yard line. Hands
- 4:23Speaker 1: it to Simon. Cuts inside. James Simon to the goal line. Touchdown, Texas.
- 4:28Speaker 1: James Simon, a sophomore from Shreveport, Louisiana, tacks on one
- 4:33Speaker 1: more Longhorns score. Longhorns win big today. Final score here
- 4:38Speaker 1: this afternoon in the 2026 college football season opener. The
- 4:42Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns 59, the Texas State Bobcats 7. That's the
- 4:49Speaker 1: way the 2026 college football season begins for the Texas
- 4:53Speaker 1: Longhorns on the plus side, and that's always a good thing.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Welcome to a Labor Day edition of the Craig White
- 5:02Speaker 2: Show here on Sports Radio AM 1300 The Zone and
- 5:04Speaker 2: where you can always catch us for free and easy
- 5:08Speaker 2: on the iHeartRadio app.
- 5:09Speaker 1: My name is Craig White. Thanks very much for joining us.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Jake Herman is the producer.
- 5:13Speaker 2: You can't see Jake right now because we have one
- 5:15Speaker 2: malfunctioning camera in studio.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Is that correct?
- 5:18Speaker 7: Yeah, it looks like it's... Just the Craig Way Show
- 5:20Speaker 7: today for those of us joining us on Facebook, YouTube,
- 5:23Speaker 7: and X.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Well, as always, the Craig Way Show, but you are
- 5:26Speaker 1: always a part of it. It's just we can't see
- 5:28Speaker 1: you today, right?
- 5:29Speaker 6: There it is, yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 1: But we'll be able to hear you. We'll be able
- 5:32Speaker 1: to hear you. So it's Jake, of course, the producer
- 5:34Speaker 1: of the program.
- 5:35Speaker 2: We're with you each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through
- 5:37Speaker 2: Friday from 2 p.m. through 5 p.m., 2 p.m. to 5.
- 5:41Speaker 2: So plenty to talk about, obviously. In the recap and
- 5:46Speaker 2: the wrap-up of the Longhorn season opening 59-7 win, over
- 5:50Speaker 2: the Texas State Bobcats. This is a Longhorns Monday edition
- 5:54Speaker 2: of the program during Longhorn football season. On Monday, we
- 5:57Speaker 2: call it Longhorns Monday because we bring you, as Jake
- 6:02Speaker 2: so expertly edited all that together, a highlight montage to
- 6:05Speaker 2: open the program. Then we bring you the highlights from
- 6:11Speaker 2: the press conference, the weekly news conference from the head coach,
- 6:14Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian.
- 6:15Speaker 1: We bring it to you live each.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And every Monday Monday morning during football season at 11.30 a.m.
- 6:23Speaker 1: We actually take care of it at 11 a.m. on Mondays.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Mike Hardball Harge joins me.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Of course, Mike and Mark Henry bring you the morning
- 6:30Speaker 2: kickoff Monday through Friday from 6 a.m.
- 6:32Speaker 1: To 9 a.m. So Harge and Henry do that for you.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And then Harge comes over and joins me for our
- 6:39Speaker 2: coverage from campus. And we have Longhorns Monday where we
- 6:42Speaker 2: have some highlights from the game and some post-game interview
- 6:46Speaker 2: conversations with some of the players. that sort of thing.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And then Sark's press conference, we bring it to you live.
- 6:52Speaker 2: It's usually right at the bottom of the hour, 1130.
- 6:55Speaker 2: It started a little bit later today with some stuff,
- 6:57Speaker 2: but pretty close to that. And we bring you that
- 7:01Speaker 2: live from the UT campus on Monday. Then when we
- 7:05Speaker 2: assemble in here for the program, we kind of recap
- 7:11Speaker 2: not only the game, but also the press conference itself.
- 7:14Speaker 2: We let you hear all of the all of the
- 7:19Speaker 2: audio from the press conference done in soundbite fashion. So
- 7:23Speaker 2: we just kind of work around, rather than just re-air
- 7:26Speaker 2: the entire press conference, we bring it to you and
- 7:28Speaker 2: set up each of those questions and things and let
- 7:31Speaker 2: you hear from that.
- 7:31Speaker 1: So we do that.
- 7:33Speaker 2: We look around the SEC. We look around college football
- 7:37Speaker 2: in general. There's plenty to talk about there in a
- 7:40Speaker 2: number of areas. And then, of course, starting next Monday,
- 7:44Speaker 2: we'll be talking about NFL coverage. as well because the
- 7:47Speaker 2: national football league begins its season this week, starting action
- 7:50Speaker 2: Wednesday night, Superbowl rematch with the defending Superbowl champion, Seattle
- 7:55Speaker 2: Seahawks against New England Patriots on Wednesday, the Los Angeles
- 8:00Speaker 2: Rams and San Francisco 49ers play on Thursday. And that
- 8:04Speaker 2: is in Melbourne, Australia. So, uh, there's those two games.
- 8:08Speaker 2: And then of course the rest of the NFL schedule, uh,
- 8:10Speaker 2: finishes up on Sunday and Monday included in that is
- 8:13Speaker 2: the Sunday, uh, season opener for the Houston Texans at
- 8:19Speaker 2: home against the Buffalo Bills at noon, which you can
- 8:21Speaker 2: hear here on 13 Under the Zone.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And then the Dallas.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Cowboys Sunday night, their season opener against the New York
- 8:31Speaker 2: football Giants, against the New York Giants. And I believe
- 8:35Speaker 2: the kickoff for that is 720. You'll be able to
- 8:37Speaker 2: hear that game on our sister station, 98.1 KVET FM,
- 8:43Speaker 2: the home of Austin's all-time country favorites. So, the NFL
- 8:48Speaker 2: season gets underway. But Longhorns Monday, a lot of zeroing
- 8:51Speaker 2: in on the Longhorns. Their opponent for this week, who
- 8:54Speaker 2: just happens to be the number one ranked team in
- 8:56Speaker 2: the nation, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the rest of
- 8:59Speaker 2: college football. So plenty to get to here on this Monday.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I know you had a football game to call on
- 9:09Speaker 2: Friday night. I did manage to catch some of it
- 9:12Speaker 2: on YouTube, but nice bounce back by the Bastrop Bears.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Yeah, playing on the road without their quarterback, able to
- 9:18Speaker 7: get a win, get to 1-1. It was a 28-18 final.
- 9:23Speaker 7: Bastrop defeating Colleen Chaparral over at Joseph Searles Stadium.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And now there's going to be quite a challenge this week.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Is it Brenham?
- 9:31Speaker 6: They'll welcome Belton this week.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Well, that's a challenge, too. So that'll be the home
- 9:36Speaker 1: opener for the Bears?
- 9:37Speaker 7: Yep, home for the next two. They've got Belton and Midland.
- 9:40Speaker 7: I'm very happy.
- 9:41Speaker 6: The second one of those that I mentioned is a
- 9:43Speaker 6: home game.
- 9:44Speaker 1: The Midland High game? The Midland High game.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, because that's a bit of a drive. From here,
- 9:49Speaker 2: I know from the Metroplex, it used to take me,
- 9:52Speaker 2: if I was going out there to do a ball game,
- 9:56Speaker 2: in the neighborhood of five hours, something like that, I
- 9:59Speaker 2: would miss. venture to guess it's at least that from
- 10:02Speaker 2: here if not longer that's almost hotel territory almost so
- 10:07Speaker 2: so anyway at least you don't worry about that this
- 10:09Speaker 2: season so and then and then of course you were
- 10:14Speaker 2: a part of our Longhorns game day coverage and from
- 10:17Speaker 2: down on Bevo Boulevard on Saturday.
- 10:19Speaker 1: How'd all that go?
- 10:20Speaker 6: Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
- 10:21Speaker 7: And for everyone that came by the area where Winship
- 10:25Speaker 7: Circle kind of used to be, now it's more flat
- 10:27Speaker 7: and spread out.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It's a Winship area.
- 10:29Speaker 7: Yeah, the Hook'Em Hangout, the Winship area, which is partially
- 10:32Speaker 7: under construction, but there's still plenty of food trucks around.
- 10:34Speaker 6: And we had a fantastic time.
- 10:36Speaker 7: It was great seeing so many of you out and
- 10:37Speaker 7: about joining us for the show. We had some Texas
- 10:40Speaker 7: State fans booing at different times.
- 10:42Speaker 6: That created a good game day atmosphere for us.
- 10:45Speaker 7: And yeah it was a lot of fun to to
- 10:48Speaker 7: join uh harge and henry and and cameron and the guys.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Well that's good um all the while everybody trying to
- 10:55Speaker 2: stay hydrated and cool it's pretty hot wasn't.
- 10:58Speaker 7: It yeah that that was uh that was a team
- 11:00Speaker 7: effort and shout out to our promotions team as well
- 11:03Speaker 7: um should shout out giselle jacob eric and everybody that
- 11:06Speaker 7: came out and helped us with that and made sure
- 11:09Speaker 7: we were staying cool with that big old cooler behind
- 11:12Speaker 7: us full of waters and Gatorades to keep the crew
- 11:14Speaker 7: ready to go.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Very nice. Okay. So there was that.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Then, of course, we had the game broadcast and had
- 11:21Speaker 2: a lot of fun by then climbing back into the
- 11:25Speaker 2: saddle again to do that and working with Roger Wallace
- 11:28Speaker 2: and Will Matthews down on the sidelines and our crew,
- 11:32Speaker 2: all of our crew, our engineer, Greg Klingensmith, our spotter,
- 11:36Speaker 2: Andy Way, our statistician, Steve Leach, with Jason Wade down
- 11:41Speaker 2: on the sidelines with a parabolic microphone.
- 11:42Speaker 1: So it all went really, really well. So it was good.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Had a good time. It's off and rolling.
- 11:48Speaker 2: And Texas looked impressive. And now they get ready for
- 11:51Speaker 2: Ohio State. So toward that end, coming up, we're going
- 11:54Speaker 2: to bring you the press conference in, like I said,
- 11:58Speaker 2: cut-down form. You'll hear it, the comments from Head Coach
- 12:03Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian from the press conference. Later this hour, we
- 12:07Speaker 2: do have Inconceivable. because there is some inconceivable. There's one thing,
- 12:11Speaker 2: I don't know whether to classify this as junk food
- 12:14Speaker 2: or alcohol. The answer is probably both. My wife turned
- 12:19Speaker 2: this one up and sent that to me. And then
- 12:23Speaker 2: there's some other things. And then we'll do this in
- 12:26Speaker 2: the three o'clock hour. We'll dive into the whole Michigan,
- 12:31Speaker 2: Western Michigan thing and the Big Ten officials because For
- 12:39Speaker 2: all of, and I don't want to light a fire
- 12:42Speaker 2: under anybody, but you need to know this. For all
- 12:47Speaker 2: of the fuss and falderol and all of that kind
- 12:51Speaker 2: of stuff, the Big Ten officials, let me put it
- 12:58Speaker 2: this way.
- 13:00Speaker 1: The clock, the one that counts, was correct.
- 13:05Speaker 7: Correct.
- 13:07Speaker 2: In what they did, it was correctly adjudicated by adding
- 13:10Speaker 2: the extra second.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Now, let me finish.
- 13:13Speaker 2: The clock that's official was correct in the way it
- 13:19Speaker 2: was interpreted, but it created a gigantic problem in that
- 13:28Speaker 2: the rest of the world, including yours truly, sitting in
- 13:31Speaker 2: my chair, getting home Saturday night after doing the game,
- 13:34Speaker 2: And everybody else, we saw a different clock. And therein
- 13:41Speaker 2: is the problem. There should not be a different clock.
- 13:45Speaker 2: The two were not synced. And that remains the big,
- 13:48Speaker 2: to this point, unanswered question. And again, I'll give you
- 13:52Speaker 2: some of the detailed explanations.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Maybe you have seen the actual rehashing from the Big
- 14:01Speaker 1: Ten's side of things.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And from their explanations and all of that, and Mike
- 14:09Speaker 2: Pereira was asked about it yesterday, and he said from
- 14:12Speaker 2: that perspective, they were correct in doing what they did.
- 14:18Speaker 2: But that does not address the problem of what created
- 14:22Speaker 2: all the controversy.
- 14:23Speaker 1: So see if you can stick with me on that.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I'll get to it into all of our perspectives, mine included,
- 14:29Speaker 2: who thought Western Michigan got absolutely robbed.
- 14:34Speaker 1: And I know a lot of people still feel that way.
- 14:38Speaker 2: There was a misdeed done, but it wasn't the misdeed
- 14:43Speaker 2: that most folks think.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It was a completely different kind of misdeed. So we'll
- 14:46Speaker 1: get to all of that.
- 14:47Speaker 2: If you would like to comment, not only on that
- 14:49Speaker 2: or on the long horns, or if you've got a question,
- 14:52Speaker 2: feel free to join us on our text line. All
- 14:55Speaker 2: you have to do is text the word Texas, followed
- 14:56Speaker 2: by your question or comment to 81530. So you text
- 15:00Speaker 2: the word Texas. followed by your question or comment to 81530.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Standard messaging and data rates may apply. So we'll get
- 15:07Speaker 2: into that certainly in the 3 o'clock hour.
- 15:08Speaker 1: And some other topics.
- 15:09Speaker 2: 4 o'clock hour, more from SART. Also, there is one,
- 15:17Speaker 2: to this point, I'm going to do one more check
- 15:20Speaker 2: and make sure about this. There's one FBS team that
- 15:26Speaker 2: could be a playoff team that is already 2-0. And
- 15:32Speaker 2: there could be two if the other one wins tonight.
- 15:38Speaker 2: But right now, there's only one. And we're going to
- 15:42Speaker 2: visit with a play-by-play voice of that team coming up
- 15:44Speaker 2: in the 4 o'clock hour. But up next, we'll hear
- 15:47Speaker 2: from the head coach from Sark's news conference here on
- 15:50Speaker 2: a Longhorns Monday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And the iHeartRadio app.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I truly think that the reason that the producer, Jake Herman,
- 16:06Speaker 2: selected George Harrison's My Sweet Lord to bump back with
- 16:11Speaker 2: is simply because of the line, I really want to
- 16:14Speaker 2: see you, because the camera wasn't working at the time.
- 16:20Speaker 2: But now you got it working. So you say, well,
- 16:22Speaker 2: I really want to see you. Now everybody who's watching
- 16:25Speaker 2: on YouTube can see you.
- 16:28Speaker 1: There we go.
- 16:29Speaker 6: We can get that. We can go with that.
- 16:30Speaker 7: We could also go with today, the 50th year anniversary
- 16:34Speaker 7: of the plagiarism lawsuit over this song.
- 16:36Speaker 2: I was starting to say, you're playing the song that
- 16:38Speaker 2: launched a huge plagiarism lawsuit. For folks who never heard
- 16:43Speaker 2: the song, He's So Fine by the Chiffons.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:49Speaker 2: George Harrison says it had nothing to do with that song.
- 16:53Speaker 2: But the similarities... are quite, quite stark how, how truly.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Similar they are.
- 17:06Speaker 6: I don't know that I've ever heard that song either, so.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Pull it up. Pull it up.
- 17:11Speaker 2: So you hear how this is going to, really want
- 17:13Speaker 2: to see you, really want to, and George's song is,
- 17:16Speaker 2: is Eastern religion based. Because at the end of the song,
- 17:21Speaker 2: you hear him saying Hare Krishna when he was, when
- 17:23Speaker 2: he was aligning with them for a while.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And so it's more, he's, This is it right here.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Keep listening. Instead of.
- 17:37Speaker 2: My sweet Lord, he's so fine. Tell me if this
- 17:41Speaker 2: doesn't sound.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Like the other one.
- 17:47Speaker 6: Right down to the backup singers. That's pretty close.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 4: I get it.
- 17:57Speaker 6: I get it.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Yeah, so, yeah, launched a lawsuit, and George Harrison and
- 18:03Speaker 2: Apple Corps wound up paying quite a bit as a
- 18:07Speaker 2: result of that. Anyway, okay, we're on a Longhorns Monday here.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Let's jump right into it. Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian.
- 18:17Speaker 2: The weekly news conference, we brought it to you live
- 18:19Speaker 2: as we do every Monday morning around 1130 AM. This
- 18:22Speaker 2: was earlier today, but here it is in the cut-down fashion.
- 18:26Speaker 1: First of all, starting with his opening comments.
- 18:28Speaker 8: First of all, I'd be remiss if I didn't thank
- 18:30Speaker 8: our fans. What an amazing turnout. Under those conditions, where
- 18:37Speaker 8: I think we were 105 heat index, on the field,
- 18:41Speaker 8: the field reached 160 degrees for our players. But when
- 18:46Speaker 8: you looked in that stadium at the opening kickoff and
- 18:48Speaker 8: just the atmosphere, the energy, was really awesome. So thank
- 18:52Speaker 8: you all, Longhorn Nation, for your support. I know I
- 18:56Speaker 8: don't need to be asking for you this Saturday night.
- 18:59Speaker 8: I know we'll be there ready to rock and roll,
- 19:01Speaker 8: so it should be a fun night for everybody that way.
- 19:05Speaker 8: I think coming out of the game, we talked about
- 19:08Speaker 8: playing 52 guys in the first half I thought was huge.
- 19:11Speaker 8: We played upwards into the 70s for the total of
- 19:14Speaker 8: the ball game. A lot of guys played. A lot
- 19:17Speaker 8: of guys got opportunities. A lot of guys got touches.
- 19:19Speaker 8: You know, I know that some of this is redundant,
- 19:22Speaker 8: but man, you think about the five turnovers essentially we
- 19:25Speaker 8: created defensively in a variety of ways, right? With Biles
- 19:29Speaker 8: with the punch out, Grayson scooping and scoring, Murad Watson,
- 19:34Speaker 8: you know, with the forced fumble, Colin with a great
- 19:37Speaker 8: job on the recovery, the interception by Biles, the two
- 19:41Speaker 8: fourth down stops, but all those, you know, that's 35
- 19:44Speaker 8: points in a game. And that's playing complimentary football. I
- 19:47Speaker 8: know y'all have heard me say that before playing complimentary
- 19:50Speaker 8: football working together i thought offensively you know the third
- 19:54Speaker 8: down efficiency was really good um you know i think
- 19:57Speaker 8: arch was like six or seven on third down something
- 20:00Speaker 8: like that the short yardage offense That's how you're able
- 20:03Speaker 8: to extend drives. And then when we didn't, there were
- 20:06Speaker 8: some that were intentional, you know, going two for two
- 20:08Speaker 8: on fourth down. So I guess it's always a good
- 20:11Speaker 8: day when you don't punt. You know, it'd been nice
- 20:15Speaker 8: to get Mac out there. I know that sounds crazy
- 20:17Speaker 8: to say, and that was part of why, you know,
- 20:19Speaker 8: we put G out there to kick that field goal
- 20:21Speaker 8: just so he can make a field goal in DKR
- 20:24Speaker 8: as we start to move forward. But all in all,
- 20:27Speaker 8: it was a good win for us. It was a
- 20:29Speaker 8: good start to the season. But we also know the
- 20:31Speaker 8: challenge that we have this week. Ohio State, they're number
- 20:34Speaker 8: one in the country for a reason. Ryan has done
- 20:38Speaker 8: a tremendous job with that program since taking over, obviously,
- 20:41Speaker 8: national champs a couple years ago. Brought in Matt Patricia
- 20:46Speaker 8: last season, led the country in just about every defensive
- 20:49Speaker 8: statistical category.
- 20:51Speaker 5: This year he.
- 20:52Speaker 8: Brings in Arthur Smith. So it's a nice luxury to have,
- 20:56Speaker 8: having two NFL head coaches on your staff as your
- 20:59Speaker 8: play callers. And they've reloaded. You know, they're extremely talented.
- 21:03Speaker 8: I think we all know who Jeremiah Smith is offensively,
- 21:06Speaker 8: but Julian Sands, a heck of a player. You know,
- 21:09Speaker 8: Bo Jackson running the ball. They got a veteran O-line.
- 21:12Speaker 8: They've added some receivers to the mix, losing Carnell Tate.
- 21:16Speaker 8: And then defensively, they've reloaded as well. You know, they
- 21:19Speaker 8: got some really good players and some guys that have
- 21:21Speaker 8: grown up you know, with McLean, Matthews, those guys, you know, Pierce,
- 21:26Speaker 8: but also the addition of an Allegro, the addition of
- 21:29Speaker 8: a John Walker. They still have Kenyatta Jackson. They still
- 21:33Speaker 8: have Devin Sanchez. So this is a very, very talented
- 21:35Speaker 8: football team that's well coached. But these are the games
- 21:39Speaker 8: that you love to be part of, you know, and
- 21:41Speaker 8: we're fortunate that we get to be part of these
- 21:43Speaker 8: games as a staff, as players, as a fan base.
- 21:47Speaker 8: We're obviously looking forward to the opportunity. Should be a
- 21:49Speaker 8: heck of a week.
- 21:51Speaker 2: All right, so those comments from Sark led into the questions.
- 21:56Speaker 2: And first out of the box, asked about his evaluation
- 22:01Speaker 2: of the running game for Texas, which had some bright
- 22:04Speaker 2: spots like the first carry of the game, Hollywood Smothers
- 22:06Speaker 2: going 45 yards, and then had some.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Times when the run got stuffed. And so he was
- 22:10Speaker 1: asked about that and also his thoughts on Ohio State's
- 22:15Speaker 1: interior defense.
- 22:17Speaker 8: So from a run game perspective, you know, I thought
- 22:20Speaker 8: we had a good plan going in. As always, you know,
- 22:25Speaker 8: when you get into some of those games, there's a
- 22:27Speaker 8: lot of slant and stunt and moving. And there's some
- 22:30Speaker 8: things where we didn't have great angles on plays as
- 22:33Speaker 8: the game went on. There was others where I felt
- 22:35Speaker 8: like we could have strained a little bit more in
- 22:36Speaker 8: the run game. And that's all parties involved. You know,
- 22:40Speaker 8: I'm not talking just about the O-line. There's opportunities for
- 22:44Speaker 8: tight ends. There's opportunities for receivers that could have created
- 22:47Speaker 8: some bigger runs. I thought at times the runners ran
- 22:49Speaker 8: it good. I thought at other times. We dance too much.
- 22:52Speaker 8: And so I think the byproduct of everybody looking at
- 22:54Speaker 8: the tape, all right, now where can we improve from
- 22:56Speaker 8: week one to week two? And that's going to be
- 22:59Speaker 8: needed in a game like this to have the ability
- 23:03Speaker 8: to have balance in these types of games. But again,
- 23:07Speaker 8: everybody's got to take a step forward from week one
- 23:09Speaker 8: to week two. And generally that can happen as long
- 23:12Speaker 8: as we're coachable and then as long as we apply
- 23:14Speaker 8: the things that we need to apply to try to
- 23:15Speaker 8: get better. As far as Ohio State's interior defensive line,
- 23:19Speaker 8: they're deep. Uh, they're talented. You know, Larry Johnson has
- 23:22Speaker 8: been there a long, long time as a heck of
- 23:24Speaker 8: a coach. Um, and so I know they lost some
- 23:26Speaker 8: of what was the veteran guys. They still have some, um, but, uh,
- 23:31Speaker 8: they're good, you know, and, and they, they're a penetrating group.
- 23:34Speaker 1: They're active.
- 23:35Speaker 8: Um, they do a good job of, of, you know,
- 23:37Speaker 8: collapsing the pocket in the past game and they're stout
- 23:39Speaker 8: in the run. So it's a heck of a challenge.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Okay.
- 23:41Speaker 4: All right.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Um, you know, Julian saying, of course, as the Ohio
- 23:45Speaker 2: state quarterback, it is number one target clearly. is Jeremiah Smith,
- 23:49Speaker 2: the junior who has just been lighting up opposing defenses
- 23:53Speaker 2: since his freshman campaign. And Sark was asked, what makes
- 23:58Speaker 2: Smith so special and how can you limit what he can.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Do to you on a football field?
- 24:04Speaker 8: Well, I mean, I think one, he garners your attention
- 24:07Speaker 8: and he deserves our attention. It's arguably the best player
- 24:11Speaker 8: in college football. And the challenge is with him, it's,
- 24:17Speaker 8: the size, speed, catch radius, you know? He's a big
- 24:20Speaker 8: physical guy who can cover a lot of ground in
- 24:23Speaker 8: a short amount of time. And it doesn't always look
- 24:28Speaker 8: like it, but it almost feels like it. Like you
- 24:30Speaker 8: can feel his presence on the field. I know I
- 24:33Speaker 8: said this about Cam, but we were talking about Cam's
- 24:36Speaker 8: catch radius. When you just talk about body structure, this
- 24:40Speaker 8: guy looks like Julio Jones. This guy looks like A.J.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Brown.
- 24:43Speaker 8: Like when it physically... And he can cover ground. And
- 24:47Speaker 8: then because he's so strong, 50-50 catches are very difficult
- 24:51Speaker 8: with him. And so, you know, you have to have
- 24:54Speaker 8: a plan. But I think like anything, when you have
- 24:57Speaker 8: a plan against somebody like him, You can't just throw
- 25:00Speaker 8: all fastballs. Even as good of a fastball as you have,
- 25:03Speaker 8: if that's all you got, sooner or later, they're gonna
- 25:06Speaker 8: hit it. So we've gotta be able to mix our
- 25:07Speaker 8: pitches up and how we defend him and how we
- 25:10Speaker 8: defend the scheme. Because Arthur and Ryan, they believe in
- 25:14Speaker 8: running the ball and they've got a good runner and
- 25:16Speaker 8: a good old line. They've got other weapons. And so
- 25:20Speaker 8: we've got to be diligent in having our ability to
- 25:22Speaker 8: throw different pitches and then be sound in the back
- 25:26Speaker 8: end to make sure that we're aware of where number
- 25:29Speaker 8: four is. And he garners that. Not every game do
- 25:33Speaker 8: you go into where you say, hey, we need to
- 25:34Speaker 8: know where this guy is every snap. We better know
- 25:37Speaker 8: where number four is on every snap.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Okay.
- 25:39Speaker 2: And one more this hour from Sarcoma. Again, we'll hear
- 25:42Speaker 2: the recap of this press conference throughout the course of
- 25:45Speaker 2: the program this afternoon. This question is understandable why it
- 25:51Speaker 2: was asked, even though we're so far out from it.
- 25:55Speaker 2: And I'm speaking of the college football playoff, you know,
- 25:58Speaker 2: because of seeing results from over the weekend.
- 26:01Speaker 1: It was just, you know, first full weekend in the books.
- 26:06Speaker 2: And then on top of that, the already analyses have
- 26:12Speaker 2: come out that show Which teams would be the 12
- 26:16Speaker 2: teams in the playoff right now? It's only one week
- 26:19Speaker 2: in the book. But leave it to Heather Dinich to
- 26:22Speaker 2: come up with that and a couple other sources as well.
- 26:25Speaker 7: I texted my dad, who, by the way, is celebrating
- 26:27Speaker 7: a birthday today. I texted him one snap into the
- 26:30Speaker 7: Longhorn game.
- 26:30Speaker 6: Who's in?
- 26:31Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Exactly.
- 26:34Speaker 2: So the question was asked of Sark about the magnitude
- 26:39Speaker 2: of this game.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Number one, Ohio State.
- 26:43Speaker 2: For the moment, number five, Texas, the updated rankings don't
- 26:46Speaker 2: come out until tomorrow because of tonight's game between SMU
- 26:49Speaker 2: and Florida State. But what about the magnitude of this game,
- 26:53Speaker 2: given the implications that it could, could have on the
- 26:57Speaker 2: college football playoff down the road?
- 26:59Speaker 8: I don't think I need to really like spend so
- 27:03Speaker 8: much energy and time on, um, What does this game mean, right?
- 27:09Speaker 8: I think as a competitor, it's like, hey, we get
- 27:13Speaker 8: an opportunity to play the number one team in the country,
- 27:15Speaker 8: a team we've had two battles with the last two years,
- 27:19Speaker 8: and we know what that takes. I'm not so consumed
- 27:23Speaker 8: with what the end result might be four months down
- 27:27Speaker 8: the road. We've got other games to go play that
- 27:30Speaker 8: can contribute one way or the other to our success
- 27:33Speaker 8: that we have in the season. What I am excited
- 27:36Speaker 8: about is as a competitor and for our team, the
- 27:40Speaker 8: locker room and building full of competitors that we have
- 27:43Speaker 8: is that we get an opportunity to go against the best.
- 27:45Speaker 8: And how are we going to perform against the best?
- 27:48Speaker 8: And because our best is going to be needed and
- 27:50Speaker 8: our best is going to be needed for four quarters.
- 27:51Speaker 8: And so that's what excites me. Like I said, I'm
- 27:55Speaker 8: not so consumed with what could be down the road.
- 27:58Speaker 8: We got 10 other games to go play that'll contribute
- 28:02Speaker 8: to that. This is about the life of a competitor
- 28:05Speaker 8: and putting yourself in the arena and performing under what
- 28:10Speaker 8: would deem stressful conditions, right? Because If you're wrong, they
- 28:14Speaker 8: can hurt you. But if we're right, we can hurt them.
- 28:17Speaker 8: And so that's the exciting part of preparing for that
- 28:22Speaker 8: at DKR in front of our crowd. I bet there's
- 28:26Speaker 8: close to 20 million people that watch this game. And
- 28:29Speaker 8: so that's pretty cool when you think about it that way.
- 28:32Speaker 1: No doubt about it.
- 28:32Speaker 2: We'll hear more from Sark coming up throughout the course
- 28:35Speaker 2: of the program this afternoon. Up next, inconceivable for Monday
- 28:38Speaker 2: afternoon here on 13 Under the Zone. Second hour of
- 28:59Speaker 2: the program here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the
- 29:02Speaker 2: Zone on the Longhorns Monday. Glad to have you with us.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Craig Way alongside the producer, Jake Herman. We're with you
- 29:08Speaker 2: up until 5 o'clock. You're free to reach us here
- 29:11Speaker 2: on this holiday, Labor Day Monday, if you so choose,
- 29:14Speaker 2: by accessing us via the text line. All you have
- 29:17Speaker 2: to do is text the word Texas, followed by your
- 29:20Speaker 2: question or comment, to 81530.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Standard messaging and data rates may apply, like our man.
- 29:29Speaker 2: CPAL, who in response to the story we had in
- 29:32Speaker 2: Inconceivable about the woman slipping, trying to get her child
- 29:36Speaker 2: up on the zip line, said, be careful where you zip.
- 29:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 2: That could go any number of directions. But yes, if
- 29:43Speaker 2: you've ever seen There's Something About Mary, the movie, you'll
- 29:46Speaker 2: nod your head in agreement with that. So I'm just saying,
- 29:49Speaker 2: be careful where you zip. We're going to hear some
- 29:53Speaker 2: more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, coming up this hour.
- 29:57Speaker 1: And again, in the four o'clock hour, we're going to.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Take a look at the team that has a leg
- 30:05Speaker 2: up on all the rest of college football to make
- 30:09Speaker 2: the playoff simply by the fact that they're 2-0 already.
- 30:15Speaker 2: And it's not an FBS. I mean, it is an
- 30:17Speaker 2: FBS team. It's not a Power 4 team. It's a
- 30:19Speaker 2: G6 team. And we're going to visit with their play-by-play
- 30:21Speaker 2: voice coming up next hour as well. But I wanted
- 30:25Speaker 2: to get to this, the Michigan story. because it has
- 30:33Speaker 2: obviously become quite a story. And I'm talking, of course,
- 30:40Speaker 2: about the game Saturday night where Michigan, you know, was
- 30:47Speaker 2: taking on Western Michigan and it looked like Western Michigan
- 30:51Speaker 2: had pulled off the 12-7 upset. It looks for all
- 30:54Speaker 2: the world as though that they had pulled off the upset.
- 30:59Speaker 2: As Bryce Underwood was trying to lead a comeback down
- 31:03Speaker 2: the field in the waning seconds. And with nine seconds left,
- 31:07Speaker 2: rolled to the right off a snap, fired to the
- 31:09Speaker 2: end zone. And all of us, all of us who
- 31:13Speaker 2: were watching it, saw the clock hit zero. And then
- 31:18Speaker 2: a Western Michigan player in the back of the end
- 31:20Speaker 2: zone touched it. And it was incomplete.
- 31:25Speaker 1: And that was it.
- 31:27Speaker 2: And Western Michigan was on the field celebrating all this stuff.
- 31:30Speaker 2: And then they said it's being checked for further review.
- 31:37Speaker 2: And my first thought was, for what? And I thought, oh,
- 31:41Speaker 2: they just want to make sure the time ran out. Well,
- 31:43Speaker 2: then you could see it. I forgot, who was calling
- 31:46Speaker 2: the game on NBC? Do you remember who it was?
- 31:48Speaker 6: Noah Eagle and Todd Blackledge.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Yeah, okay.
- 31:50Speaker 2: And they were like, well, this is done. You know,
- 31:52Speaker 2: this is, you know, this is, you know. And we
- 31:55Speaker 2: all felt the same way. And then they said, there's
- 31:57Speaker 2: one second left on the clock. We're like, what? How
- 32:01Speaker 2: do they get that? How do they get one second left?
- 32:04Speaker 2: And then they run another play. And then one second
- 32:06Speaker 2: makes all the difference in the world because it's a
- 32:07Speaker 2: Hail Mary and it's pulled down for a game-winning touchdown
- 32:11Speaker 2: to give Michigan a 13-12 victory. So then immediately, there
- 32:17Speaker 2: was all manner of attempts to either explain or figure
- 32:23Speaker 2: it out. They went to Terry McCauley to get his
- 32:27Speaker 2: thoughts on it. He said he didn't understand it because
- 32:34Speaker 2: he was convinced that the game clock that we saw
- 32:38Speaker 2: on television there was in fact synced up with the
- 32:43Speaker 2: official clock, which is through the Big Ten Conference.
- 32:47Speaker 1: So he didn't know. And then what preceded the rest
- 32:52Speaker 1: of the deep night Saturday into Sunday, was this volley
- 32:56Speaker 1: of anger and confusion and shock and indignation and all
- 33:04Speaker 1: of those kinds of things, feelings and things like that
- 33:06Speaker 1: over why and how this could have happened when it
- 33:08Speaker 1: was clear to all of us watching.
- 33:11Speaker 2: That time had expired before there was even a touch.
- 33:17Speaker 2: So Underwood's pass went beyond the end zone and into
- 33:22Speaker 2: the arms of Western Michigan safety Micah Davis but the
- 33:25Speaker 2: replay clock that showed zero with the ball still in
- 33:29Speaker 2: the air, but Big Ten replay officials did put a
- 33:32Speaker 2: second back on the clock.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Wolverines got another chance. J.J. Buchanan hauled it in, 47-yard touchdown,
- 33:37Speaker 1: and they went 13-12.
- 33:40Speaker 2: In addition to all of the things that went on
- 33:43Speaker 2: with this, the president of the University of Western Michigan,
- 33:48Speaker 2: Russ Cavalhuna, I think is how it's pronounced, had.
- 33:54Speaker 2: A conversation with Big Ten officials who explained to him
- 34:01Speaker 2: what everybody saw on the clock was not the actual time. Now,
- 34:05Speaker 2: I'll come back to that in a moment, but just
- 34:08Speaker 2: saying that alone makes no sense, but I'll come back
- 34:10Speaker 2: to that. Then they went on to say, here, and
- 34:14Speaker 2: they gave the university president a video or outlook and said,
- 34:20Speaker 2: this is how it really looked. And when he saw it,
- 34:24Speaker 2: it shows when Davis in the end zone actually makes
- 34:27Speaker 2: contact with the ball out of play, that there's still
- 34:31Speaker 2: one tick on the clock.
- 34:33Speaker 7: By the way, can you believe there's another Davis in
- 34:35Speaker 7: the end zone involved in an extra one second play?
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah. How about that?
- 34:39Speaker 6: Sorry, dad. I know it's your birthday. I'm a fan.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Exactly.
- 34:43Speaker 6: Rod Bramlett.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:48Speaker 1: The late Rod Bramlett.
- 34:49Speaker 2: So anyway, so, uh, At the time, the first quote
- 34:55Speaker 2: that came out from Kavahuna, the Western Michigan president, was
- 35:01Speaker 2: they provided me video with it and I accept it
- 35:04Speaker 2: or something like that. And it seemed, you know, even
- 35:07Speaker 2: though everybody's still very upset about it and said Western
- 35:09Speaker 2: Michigan robbed and all that kind of stuff. Here's a
- 35:12Speaker 2: university president saying I accept their explanation. I've seen the
- 35:14Speaker 2: video proof.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Now, ESPN went back and had a conversation with him
- 35:21Speaker 1: and said, really?
- 35:22Speaker 4: Really?
- 35:24Speaker 1: You're good with this, huh?
- 35:25Speaker 2: So then, further cross-examined, if you will, the university president
- 35:32Speaker 2: from Western Michigan, Russ Cavalhuna, then said he did not
- 35:39Speaker 2: think the replay process was, in his words, quote, is
- 35:44Speaker 2: as good as it could be, end quote.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Here's what he said. He said, and.
- 35:51Speaker 2: That's because What the TV viewers see in a pivotal
- 35:55Speaker 2: question is different than what the review process shows. Is
- 35:59Speaker 2: there a real reason why we can't have those things equal?
- 36:02Speaker 2: And if there is, let's try and fix that. And
- 36:04Speaker 2: if there isn't a real reason why we can't have
- 36:05Speaker 2: those things synced up, then we should sync them up
- 36:08Speaker 2: so that everybody who's watching at home doesn't start to
- 36:10Speaker 2: wonder what happened. So he said he spoke to Big
- 36:14Speaker 2: Ten officials after the game, including the conference commissioner, Tony Petitti,
- 36:17Speaker 2: to get an explanation for why the clock that the
- 36:21Speaker 2: Big Ten reviewed was different than the one showed on
- 36:24Speaker 2: the NBC telecast. And this is the university president's quote.
- 36:28Speaker 2: If you look at what they saw, then you reach
- 36:31Speaker 2: the conclusion they reached. However, if you look at what
- 36:34Speaker 2: the broadcasters broadcast, you reach a different conclusion. I think
- 36:38Speaker 2: it would be good to ask ourselves, can we sync
- 36:40Speaker 2: those up so that the viewers could see what the
- 36:42Speaker 2: officials would be looking at? Cavalcuna added that if there
- 36:46Speaker 2: was an appeals process, he would ask for a review
- 36:49Speaker 2: to determine whether the Big Ten's clock was more accurate
- 36:52Speaker 2: than the one shown on the broadcast.
- 36:54Speaker 1: There is no mechanism to appeal. He said that just
- 36:58Speaker 1: doesn't exist. If there were an opportunity to do that,
- 37:00Speaker 1: what I would ask is, hey, are we sure that
- 37:03Speaker 1: the sync that the Big Ten used is better than
- 37:06Speaker 1: the sync that the broadcasters and all my fans saw?
- 37:09Speaker 1: He reiterated that he didn't believe that the Big Ten
- 37:13Speaker 1: was trying to change the process or apply it inequitably.
- 37:17Speaker 1: But he does believe his players deserve evidence showing why
- 37:19Speaker 1: the Big Ten's clock was more than accurate. The Big
- 37:23Speaker 1: Ten stood by the statement at issue two hours after
- 37:26Speaker 1: the game. This was their quote.
- 37:28Speaker 2: It was determined that Davis started his jump from an
- 37:31Speaker 2: established out-of-bounds position with his left foot and made contact
- 37:35Speaker 2: with the ball with one second remaining on the clock.
- 37:38Speaker 2: A side-by-side view of the play and the clock using
- 37:41Speaker 2: a different shot of the game clock in the stadium
- 37:43Speaker 2: was used to determine the final ruling. The commissioner of
- 37:46Speaker 2: the Mid-American Conference, John Steinbrecher, earlier said that the review
- 37:51Speaker 2: process was properly followed and that he thought, and though
- 37:54Speaker 2: he might not like the outcome, it was ultimately correct.
- 37:59Speaker 2: I have confidence in the integrity of the process and
- 38:01Speaker 2: the integrity of the people involved. The process was followed,
- 38:04Speaker 2: and given that, you have to go with the decision.
- 38:07Speaker 4: So.
- 38:09Speaker 1: That's where that is.
- 38:12Speaker 7: Where do you come down on fans being able to
- 38:14Speaker 7: see and hear a more transparent look at the replay process?
- 38:18Speaker 6: I know the ACC tried this.
- 38:20Speaker 2: I come down where I always come down on this thing,
- 38:22Speaker 2: the whole thing about replay review in the first place
- 38:26Speaker 2: and how I feel about the ABS system. If it
- 38:30Speaker 2: gets the call right, it should be in the game.
- 38:33Speaker 2: And for people who say, well, human error, is part
- 38:38Speaker 2: of the process. Human error is part of the game.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Doesn't have to be. Doesn't have to be.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Human error, if you can remove as much human error.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Out as possible, it makes the game better. Why? Well, A,
- 38:55Speaker 1: first and foremost, you can get more calls correct or
- 38:58Speaker 1: the call correct. B, it removes any suspicion on the
- 39:03Speaker 1: part of the unfortunate party that something nefarious went on,
- 39:09Speaker 1: that something was done to get them. And it also takes.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Away the people in the degenerate world who think that
- 39:17Speaker 2: it's all gambling-based as well.
- 39:20Speaker 6: Oh, Kalshi made the call.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 39:23Speaker 2: That kind of stuff. If you can get it right,
- 39:26Speaker 2: get it right. Now, here's the question I've had all along.
- 39:30Speaker 2: since Saturday night before I even saw the Big Ten's explanation,
- 39:34Speaker 2: because what I guessed is ultimately what the deal was.
- 39:38Speaker 2: I said, well, for them to go to the replay
- 39:42Speaker 2: review and say that on their review, There was a
- 39:47Speaker 2: second left. That tells me those clocks were not in sync,
- 39:51Speaker 2: which begs the question, why?
- 39:54Speaker 1: How?
- 39:55Speaker 2: Why were they not in sync? Supposedly, it's done before
- 39:58Speaker 2: every game, and it's in sync. Not only that, not
- 40:03Speaker 2: only that, you may remember that on the play before
- 40:07Speaker 2: the first attempt at the Hail Mary when they spiked
- 40:09Speaker 2: the ball, the NBC clock, what we also showed, 8 seconds.
- 40:16Speaker 2: The official came on, the referee said, please reset the
- 40:18Speaker 2: game clock to nine seconds. Well, if you're resetting to nine,
- 40:22Speaker 2: why wouldn't it be synced at that point?
- 40:24Speaker 6: 9.0000.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Why would it not be synced at that point?
- 40:30Speaker 2: So my question is, does that mean that on the snap,
- 40:38Speaker 2: the television replay system was quicker to start the clock
- 40:44Speaker 2: than the Big Ten?
- 40:45Speaker 6: Maybe. And why would that be?
- 40:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:48Speaker 2: So those are the unanswered questions. And those are the
- 40:51Speaker 2: reasons why this remains a mess right now. So, you know,
- 40:58Speaker 2: that's the problem. I believe the Big Ten when they say, look,
- 41:04Speaker 2: here's our replay.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Here's what it shows. I saw it.
- 41:07Speaker 2: I understand why they said what they said. It shows
- 41:09Speaker 2: one second as Davis is touching the ball. It's Those
- 41:14Speaker 2: two views are synced, but it's not synced with the
- 41:18Speaker 2: television thing. And why is the television telecast not synced
- 41:23Speaker 2: with it?
- 41:23Speaker 7: And it didn't look to me like the television broadcast
- 41:26Speaker 7: started too early. Did you check if the in-stadium clock,
- 41:30Speaker 7: the one the Big Ten officials are using, did you.
- 41:32Speaker 6: Check if that started too late?
- 41:33Speaker 1: Yeah, right. So that's it.
- 41:37Speaker 6: By the quote-unquote hometown timekeeper?
- 41:39Speaker 1: You're right, exactly. Now, here's the other thing that's come
- 41:42Speaker 1: down out of this.
- 41:45Speaker 2: There was another thing that's come down. I think this
- 41:51Speaker 2: might have been on the American Athletic Conference. I have
- 41:55Speaker 2: to look it up. And it had like the most
- 41:58Speaker 2: controversial endings and those kinds of things in college football.
- 42:03Speaker 2: The second or third one on the list was the
- 42:05Speaker 2: Texas-Nebraska 2009 Big 12 Championship. I talked about this last week, ironically,
- 42:10Speaker 2: before this Michigan thing ever happened, where Texas... is trailing
- 42:14Speaker 2: 12 to 10. And ironically, same final score too, 13
- 42:19Speaker 2: to 12 as it wound up being as Saturday night.
- 42:23Speaker 2: But Colt McCoy is rolling out, running, running, time's running out.
- 42:30Speaker 2: He throws and it skips out of bounds. The clock
- 42:34Speaker 2: is supposed to stop once it makes contact out of bounds.
- 42:39Speaker 2: The clock at AT & T Stadium went on and
- 42:43Speaker 2: clicked to zero. So Nebraska players and coaches rushed the
- 42:47Speaker 2: field and all that kind of stuff. Mack Brown stood
- 42:49Speaker 2: there calmly on the sideline and raised his finger and said, nope,
- 42:53Speaker 2: there's one second left. And I thought there was at
- 42:56Speaker 2: the time, but we had to look at it on
- 42:58Speaker 2: the replay. And you can tell on the replay that
- 42:59Speaker 2: there was. There was still time. In fact, I saw
- 43:02Speaker 2: a lot of people on social media in the last
- 43:04Speaker 2: 24 hours say, I went back and I looked at
- 43:06Speaker 2: that Texas-Nebraska game. It wasn't nearly as as controversial as
- 43:10Speaker 2: this thing was, you know, um, and, uh, the other
- 43:14Speaker 2: thing was in the athletic, they said, ultimately Mack Brown
- 43:16Speaker 2: was proven, right. There was extra time left. Um, and
- 43:19Speaker 2: then Hunter Lawrence kicks the 46 yard field goal in
- 43:21Speaker 2: Texas wins. Uh, and I mentioned this on the deal
- 43:27Speaker 2: that when we were done with our post game after
- 43:32Speaker 2: Texas had won the big 12 and they're headed to
- 43:34Speaker 2: Pasadena to play Alabama for the national championship, uh, I
- 43:39Speaker 2: ran into the timer, the guy who was, and I'd
- 43:44Speaker 2: known him. He'd been a football official for years and
- 43:47Speaker 2: then transitioned into the booth. And he was the one
- 43:51Speaker 2: on the time. And I didn't even ask him about
- 43:56Speaker 2: the time. All I said was, wow, some finish on
- 43:59Speaker 2: some game. And he said, you want to know how
- 44:01Speaker 2: much time was left?
- 44:02Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah.
- 44:05Speaker 2: He said, in that room, in the clock room, We
- 44:09Speaker 2: keep time down to hundreds of seconds, tenths and hundreds.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Of course, on a standard scoreboard clock like what we
- 44:17Speaker 2: saw Saturday night, all you see is 0-0-0, you know,
- 44:22Speaker 2: minutes and seconds. He said, we have it down to
- 44:25Speaker 2: hundreds of seconds. And the actual time that was left
- 44:29Speaker 2: on the clock when Colt McCoy's pass kicked out of
- 44:31Speaker 2: bounds was 0.39 seconds, almost four-tenths of a second. And
- 44:38Speaker 2: my response was, hey, in college basketball, that's enough time
- 44:41Speaker 2: for a catch and a shoot, you know, in the
- 44:42Speaker 2: NBA as well. He goes, that's right. It's time for
- 44:45Speaker 2: a play. It's enough time for a play. So it
- 44:49Speaker 2: was 0.39 is what.
- 44:52Speaker 1: The clock operator told me after the game.
- 44:55Speaker 2: So there appeared to be less than that in this
- 44:58Speaker 2: Michigan game, but again, two different clocks. And the question
- 45:02Speaker 2: that everybody's going to ask is one of sinking.
- 45:05Speaker 1: And is it like that everywhere?
- 45:08Speaker 2: Is the clock at DKR synced with the SEC timer's crew?
- 45:18Speaker 2: Is it like that everywhere else? Immediately, somebody else said,
- 45:24Speaker 2: aren't Big Ten officials the officials of for this game
- 45:28Speaker 2: this Saturday with Ohio State.
- 45:29Speaker 6: Sure will be.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Yeah, because it was a reciprocal deal. Last year was
- 45:32Speaker 1: SEC officials.
- 45:33Speaker 7: I wonder if Joel Klatt will bring it up on
- 45:35Speaker 7: every call like he did last season.
- 45:37Speaker 6: These are SEC officials. He said it probably 12 times.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we'll see if that's the case.
- 45:43Speaker 1: But Joel Klatt won't be on the call. It's on ABC.
- 45:45Speaker 6: Right, that answers that.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:47Speaker 2: All right, we're going to hear more from Longhorn's head coach,
- 45:50Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian, from the press conference today when we continue
- 45:53Speaker 2: on 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Just
- 45:57Speaker 2: don't ask any of the officiating crew in Michigan what
- 46:00Speaker 2: time it is. Boy, the memes and the gifs that
- 46:03Speaker 2: have come down since then have just been amazing to
- 46:07Speaker 2: see some of those.
- 46:08Speaker 1: They've been pretty entertaining. Somebody on the text line said,
- 46:13Speaker 1: I would have thought the officials from the 1988 Southwest
- 46:16Speaker 1: Conference crew would have retired by now. Good to see
- 46:18Speaker 1: they're still getting work in Michigan.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Yeah, there were some controversial calls there in that.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 46:29Speaker 2: It talked about the Michigan Seat Palace, the Michigan receiver
- 46:31Speaker 2: called the ball a Utah transfer.
- 46:33Speaker 1: A good choice, Kyle Whittingham.
- 46:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Transferring in on that.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Let's hear some more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian,
- 46:41Speaker 2: from the press conference. And this was, again, the press
- 46:47Speaker 2: conference that we brought to you live this morning, just
- 46:50Speaker 2: past 1130 this morning here on The Zone. and make
- 46:57Speaker 2: sure I pull up the right file here. I see
- 46:59Speaker 2: where you gave me some of the other stuff on
- 47:02Speaker 2: a different email, and I accidentally pulled that up and
- 47:05Speaker 2: should not have done that, and.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Now I have.
- 47:07Speaker 6: Well, are you sure that that email matches the Big
- 47:10Speaker 6: Ten's email?
- 47:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a good point. It's a good point. Anyway,
- 47:13Speaker 1: Sark was asked about a question of pomp and circumstance
- 47:17Speaker 1: of non-football-related things, and it talked about, ESPN College Game
- 47:24Speaker 1: Day is going to be here. There's all kinds of
- 47:29Speaker 1: concerts and stuff happening, musical appearances and things like that.
- 47:34Speaker 1: I think Chris Stapleton is doing a show on Thursday
- 47:36Speaker 1: night over on campus. And then.
- 47:43Speaker 6: Who's... I think Robert O'Keen is coming too.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Robert O'Keen is performing on Saturday. And so there's a
- 47:50Speaker 2: lot of stuff surrounding that. And then the question also
- 47:54Speaker 2: brought up the, and you may have seen this by now,
- 47:58Speaker 2: all the smoke that came out of the tunnel. And
- 48:01Speaker 2: as the Longhorns came out of there, there was a
- 48:03Speaker 2: kind of a collision with a guy in the tunnel.
- 48:05Speaker 2: And Arch Manning kind of got knocked down a little
- 48:07Speaker 2: bit along with some other players.
- 48:09Speaker 7: If I didn't know better, if I didn't know the
- 48:10Speaker 7: Longhorns took care of business, I'd think, oh, that's not
- 48:13Speaker 7: a good omen.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Yeah, but they did take care of their business.
- 48:19Speaker 1: But anyway, it.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Went from there, and they asked him if he was
- 48:24Speaker 2: concerned about those non-football-related things.
- 48:27Speaker 8: I think it's great for our game. I'll say this.
- 48:30Speaker 8: The fact that we have College Game Day coming back
- 48:33Speaker 8: to Austin, that's great. The fact that we'll have— Whether
- 48:38Speaker 8: it's the Spurs team, the Rockets team, how many other
- 48:42Speaker 8: people on our sideline. That's great because these are two
- 48:45Speaker 8: great teams that are going to battle and going to
- 48:48Speaker 8: compete against one another. It's awesome for the university. It's
- 48:52Speaker 8: awesome for the city of Austin. It's awesome for college football.
- 48:55Speaker 8: I mean, this will be the most watched regular season
- 48:57Speaker 8: game arguably of all time in the regular season. That's
- 49:02Speaker 8: great for everybody else. For us, what are we doing today?
- 49:05Speaker 8: How are we preparing today? And that's been the message
- 49:08Speaker 8: to our team. You know, today's the most important day.
- 49:11Speaker 8: We need to focus on the task at hand and
- 49:13Speaker 8: we need to be enamored with us because I think
- 49:16Speaker 8: this week can be full of distractions if you allow
- 49:18Speaker 8: them to be distractions. And so, you know, focus is
- 49:21Speaker 8: a very powerful thing. And so we use a very
- 49:24Speaker 8: simple adage, starve our distractions, feed our focus. And if
- 49:28Speaker 8: we do that, we'll put our best foot forward and
- 49:31Speaker 8: play the best game that we're capable of playing. But
- 49:33Speaker 8: all that stuff is really good for the game. It's
- 49:35Speaker 8: really good for everything else. For us, It's about our
- 49:37Speaker 8: prep work and about our preparation mentally, physically, and emotionally.
- 49:41Speaker 2: Now, a whole lot was brought up about the fact
- 49:47Speaker 2: that Texas has lost its last two games to Ohio State.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Last year in Columbus in the season opener, 14-7. The
- 49:53Speaker 2: year before in the semifinals of the college football playoff,
- 49:57Speaker 2: and that was in the Cotton Bowl.
- 49:59Speaker 1: They lost 28-14.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Texas, of course, beat them. in the Fiesta Bowl in
- 50:08Speaker 2: January of 2009. They had a home and home in
- 50:11Speaker 2: 05 and 06, just like the home and home that
- 50:13Speaker 2: took place 20 years later in 2025 and 2026. In 2005,
- 50:16Speaker 2: Texas won that thriller up in Columbus en route to
- 50:20Speaker 2: going on to win the national championship. In 06, in Austin,
- 50:25Speaker 2: Ohio State won 24-7 and went on to win the
- 50:29Speaker 2: national title. Now, Sark, of course, was only involved in
- 50:34Speaker 2: two of those Texas defeats, the two most recent ones.
- 50:37Speaker 2: And both of those games were close games, games that
- 50:42Speaker 2: went down in the waning moments of the contest. And
- 50:46Speaker 2: the question was asked by our good friend Cedric Golden
- 50:48Speaker 2: of the Austin American Statesman. Ced's going to be on
- 50:50Speaker 2: with us on the program on Thursday of this week,
- 50:51Speaker 2: by the way. And Cedric said, Matt Brown once told
- 50:55Speaker 2: me that he was kind of in a flunk after
- 51:00Speaker 2: the loss to Alabama in the 2009 national championship game.
- 51:03Speaker 2: And it took him a while to climb out of it.
- 51:04Speaker 2: I remember Mac telling that story pretty publicly about this.
- 51:10Speaker 2: And he asked Sark, how long did it take him
- 51:15Speaker 2: to get over those two tough losses in the playoff
- 51:19Speaker 2: semifinals to Washington there in 2023 in the.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Sugar bowl. And then of course, in the cotton bowl,
- 51:29Speaker 1: Ohio State in 2024.
- 51:31Speaker 8: I think it would probably have been easier to get
- 51:33Speaker 8: over if we had just gotten blown out. You know,
- 51:38Speaker 8: I think when you get so close, you know, when
- 51:41Speaker 8: you have a fourth down against Washington with a fade
- 51:45Speaker 8: to A.D. Mitchell, that's off his fingertips that if he
- 51:49Speaker 8: catches it, you know, for a little better pass, maybe
- 51:51Speaker 8: they call a holding. I don't know, like, that you're
- 51:54Speaker 8: playing for a national title. I think back to the
- 51:56Speaker 8: Ohio State game and, you know, I look at like,
- 52:00Speaker 8: I can count them on one hand, plays that maybe
- 52:02Speaker 8: were difference making plays in the game. You know, the
- 52:05Speaker 8: screen at the end of the first half, I still
- 52:07Speaker 8: see Travion Henderson running in front of me. You know,
- 52:10Speaker 8: I still think to his 21-17 and I think to
- 52:16Speaker 8: the sack fumble, you know, that they run back. And so,
- 52:20Speaker 8: when you're that close, it's probably harder to get over.
- 52:24Speaker 8: But like I say it a lot, that's the life
- 52:26Speaker 8: of a competitor. And we're very fortunate to put ourselves
- 52:30Speaker 8: in that arena, to put ourselves on that stage. And
- 52:33Speaker 8: I wouldn't want it any other way than to be
- 52:35Speaker 8: on that stage. There's a lot of other people that
- 52:38Speaker 8: were sitting at home on their couch, watching us play
- 52:41Speaker 8: in that game. And the goal is to win that
- 52:45Speaker 8: one and then win one more. And we've got to
- 52:47Speaker 8: do everything in our power to try to put ourselves
- 52:49Speaker 8: back in those positions to be even better if we're
- 52:51Speaker 8: fortunate enough to be in that situation again.
- 52:53Speaker 2: And those situations include the goal-to-go situations where the Longhorns
- 52:57Speaker 2: came up short not only last year in Columbus, but
- 53:00Speaker 2: also obviously the most famous or infamous, depending on your perspective,
- 53:05Speaker 2: there in the Cotton Bowl there, down 21-14, and then
- 53:08Speaker 2: the scoop and score, the fumble return, the touchdown.
- 53:10Speaker 1: To give the final of 28-14.
- 53:13Speaker 2: And so he was asked, does he feel like the
- 53:16Speaker 2: personnel he has added to his roster and to his
- 53:20Speaker 2: team now has his team in position to get past
- 53:26Speaker 2: Ohio State in these types of situations?
- 53:29Speaker 8: When it comes to those scenarios, personnel helps. Schemes help.
- 53:34Speaker 8: The right play call at the right time helps. The
- 53:37Speaker 8: mentality helps. It all adds up because... They've got good scheme.
- 53:42Speaker 8: They've got good players. They've got good play callers. And
- 53:44Speaker 8: so it's the marriage of those two things coming together. Ultimately,
- 53:51Speaker 8: we need to be better in those scenarios, you know,
- 53:53Speaker 8: and you just think about these last two games we
- 53:55Speaker 8: played them. That was probably the difference in the ball
- 53:58Speaker 8: game was our inability to score inside the 10. And so,
- 54:01Speaker 8: you know, that's why we do the extra work. That's
- 54:04Speaker 8: why you play certain emphasis on different seasons of where
- 54:08Speaker 8: do we need to improve? You know, hopefully this time around,
- 54:11Speaker 8: we get more opportunities like that and we can capitalize
- 54:14Speaker 8: on them.
- 54:15Speaker 1: All right. Then he was asked about Cole Hudson.
- 54:19Speaker 2: Now, 80-some-odd players, I think it was like 85, over
- 54:22Speaker 2: 80 players played in the game on Saturday. That's what
- 54:25Speaker 2: happens when you are impressive and you win one-sided games
- 54:30Speaker 2: against the opponent. And more than 80 players got on
- 54:34Speaker 2: the field for Texas and played in the game. One
- 54:36Speaker 2: who did not was Cole Hudson, who had returned under
- 54:40Speaker 2: that temporary restraining order and had trained with Texas. And
- 54:44Speaker 2: Sark was asked why didn't Hudson get in the ballgame,
- 54:46Speaker 2: and he gave an explanation for it That involves eligibility,
- 54:51Speaker 2: but it's not eligibility in the way we were all
- 54:54Speaker 2: picturing and envisioning what happened with LSU and what was
- 54:57Speaker 2: going on there where those players were.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Left off the roster. Here's Sark's explanation about Cole Hudson.
- 55:03Speaker 8: From Cole's perspective, technically today he is ineligible, not because
- 55:08Speaker 8: of the ruling, because of something different when it comes
- 55:11Speaker 8: to the NCAA that he's working through. But as I
- 55:15Speaker 8: said before, we are respecting the SEC's decision. And once
- 55:21Speaker 8: he can get cleared, and if he gets cleared from
- 55:23Speaker 8: the NCAA, then we'll go back to the SEC. And
- 55:26Speaker 8: what does that look like? He falls under a little
- 55:29Speaker 8: different category than... what so much the hoopla was made around.
- 55:34Speaker 8: I think it needs to be stated and it needs
- 55:36Speaker 8: to be clear. Cole never signed a professional contract. He
- 55:40Speaker 8: was never technically a professional player. He tried out, you know,
- 55:44Speaker 8: and that's what those tryout camps were, you know, when
- 55:47Speaker 8: he went to the Cowboys, I believe, and the Browns.
- 55:50Speaker 8: But he was technically not a signed player. And so
- 55:52Speaker 8: he falls under a little different caveat. We'll leave it
- 55:55Speaker 8: up to the NCAA and then we'll leave it up
- 55:58Speaker 8: to the SEC to determine if he's eligible to play
- 56:00Speaker 8: for us or not.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so there it is.
- 56:03Speaker 2: We'll hear some more from Sark coming up when we
- 56:06Speaker 2: continue here on this Longhorns Monday on 13 Under the Zone. Yeah,
- 56:17Speaker 2: still talking about all the time here. Here's a tweet,
- 56:20Speaker 2: by the way. It was retweeted by Stuart Mandel, of course,
- 56:22Speaker 2: from The Athletic. He said, this is the best technical
- 56:26Speaker 2: explanation I've seen of what might have happened Saturday night.
- 56:32Speaker 1: There are not two clocks.
- 56:34Speaker 2: There was a video syncing issue that other sports need
- 56:37Speaker 2: to know how to deal with. So this comes from
- 56:43Speaker 2: Alex Farmentino, who works at ESPN. And I think he's
- 56:49Speaker 2: a producer. And so that would mean he would be
- 56:53Speaker 2: in the truck on a lot of these things.
- 56:56Speaker 1: And he goes, couple thoughts.
- 56:58Speaker 2: One, Multiple leagues are allowing these reviews, audio and video,
- 57:04Speaker 2: to be aired live after the ACC broke the seal
- 57:08Speaker 2: last year. Much of this dialogue goes away if no
- 57:11Speaker 2: discrepancy between TV interpretation and what replay officials actually decided.
- 57:17Speaker 2: It shows the power of that access. Two, basketball has
- 57:20Speaker 2: already solved this problem. Add tenths of a second to
- 57:22Speaker 2: a clock in the last minute and have a backboard
- 57:24Speaker 2: light as a frame of reference to true zero.
- 57:28Speaker 1: That'd be funny.
- 57:29Speaker 2: Maybe you could, you know, when the ball's in the
- 57:30Speaker 2: air or something, have the lights up on the goalpost
- 57:33Speaker 2: or something, you know, illuminated when it goes to zero. Three,
- 57:36Speaker 2: why is that reference light so powerful? Any clock as
- 57:40Speaker 2: a separate source in two box like Big Ten released
- 57:44Speaker 2: is dependent on an accurate synchronization of those two sources.
- 57:49Speaker 2: People are rightfully asking, how do I know that the
- 57:51Speaker 2: clock camera is in sync as the Western Michigan player
- 57:56Speaker 2: is touching the ball? Nothing obvious in this video to
- 57:59Speaker 2: tether those two sources together.
- 58:01Speaker 1: We just have to take the word for it.
- 58:03Speaker 2: I produced plenty of shows where syncing one camera or
- 58:06Speaker 2: another was trouble shot throughout the game.
- 58:08Speaker 1: Doesn't mean it happened here, but it is possible.
- 58:11Speaker 2: Wide shot with a light to show true zero in
- 58:14Speaker 2: a frame of play, much simpler. Four, as for what
- 58:18Speaker 2: was shown on TV, any video source, the clock in
- 58:22Speaker 2: this case, layered on top of another video digital video effect, DVE,
- 58:28Speaker 2: has the potential to be delayed by fractions of a second.
- 58:35Speaker 2: It takes time, albeit very small, for video sources to
- 58:39Speaker 2: move around in a production router where they're mixed together
- 58:43Speaker 2: by the video switcher. There are plenty of instances where
- 58:46Speaker 2: a basketball final second shot shows time on the DVE clock,
- 58:51Speaker 2: what TV shows in the lower corner, while the light
- 58:54Speaker 2: and the physical clock in the frame of the camera
- 58:57Speaker 2: shot have already hit zero. It may only be a
- 59:00Speaker 2: difference of a frame of video, usually one one-thirtieth of
- 59:04Speaker 2: a second, but plenty of sports moments prove to be
- 59:07Speaker 2: that close. The data feed that powers the virtual bug
- 59:11Speaker 2: with the clock and the score can have a similar lag,
- 59:15Speaker 2: thus the power of the light. If football puts a
- 59:18Speaker 2: light on the goal post or on some other place
- 59:21Speaker 2: on the field, nearly all the ambiguity of this instance
- 59:24Speaker 2: goes away. It would be interesting to see if this
- 59:27Speaker 2: lightning strike moment brings any change or just get swept
- 59:30Speaker 2: away in the flow of the season as such tech
- 59:32Speaker 2: would take investment for far fewer close moments than in hoops.
- 59:36Speaker 6: I had that thought. How many times is this really
- 59:38Speaker 6: going to come into play?
- 59:40Speaker 7: For that big of an investment that has to come,
- 59:44Speaker 7: what officiating is handled at the conference level, the way
- 59:47Speaker 7: it is in college football, that investment's got to come
- 59:50Speaker 7: from the conferences, and that can be a whole process.
- 59:54Speaker 1: Okay, here's the other slippery slope. I haven't brought this
- 59:57Speaker 1: up yet.
- 59:58Speaker 2: For those who are saying, well, it's Big Ten officials.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: You know, they hosed Western Michigan, all that stuff. It's
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: important to understand that many of the officials, you know,
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: and they're in crews.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: So it's the same crew.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: But a lot of the crews that work Big Ten
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: games work MAAC games too, Mid-America. It is a co-op agreement.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: The SEC has one similar with the Sun Belt. And
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: I believe the Big 12 has one with the Mountain West.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: So a lot of times, it's cross-pollination. So these crews
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: work games in both leagues. So saying that this is
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: specifically a Big 10 crew would be faulty to say that.
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: Can we just centralize it already, though? I mean, I've
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: heard this brought up by a lot of people in
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: the college football world. But here's the problem you have
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: with centralizing. First of all, if you have to centralize,
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: it's important to centralize full crews. Second, most of these
- 1:00:59Speaker 7: guys who work in college games, that's not their only income.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: And so they've got day jobs, whereas the NFL, full-time
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: officials doing their thing. Thirdly, and this is important to mention, thirdly,
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: different conferences pay different rates. So if you were to
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: centralize it, You'd have to get to a centralized rate.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: It might be more than, say, a G6 conference wants
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: to pay. I've seen this with umpiring crews. When the
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: Longhorns have played a road game against what would be
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: a G6-type school, they only got three umpires, not four.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: They have first, third, and home.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: That's it. They don't have a second-base umpire.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: And it really sticks out like a sore thumb when
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: you have a check-swing situation And the umpire from first
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: with a base runner on has had to move behind
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: the mound. And he's trying to evaluate a left-hander swing.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: Did he go all the way around and you're at
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: second base? You can't have an accurate view of that.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: Yet he's the appeal guy. You can't go to the
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: third base with a guy from, you know, that side.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: So anyway, there you go.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: Um, we'll, uh, I'll tell you what, let's hear one
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: more from, uh, uh, Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian. He
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: was asked, uh, if he had taken the time to
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: evaluate himself as a play caller from those past Ohio
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: State meetings.
- 1:02:29Speaker 8: I felt like last year, you know, unbeknownst to probably
- 1:02:32Speaker 8: more of the national media, we ran the ball really well.
- 1:02:36Speaker 8: I think people think we just went out there and
- 1:02:38Speaker 8: laid an egg and had minus 10 yards rushing or something.
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: We ran the ball pretty well. I felt like the
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: passing game was not where it needed to be, you know,
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: the first two and a half, three quarters or so
- 1:02:49Speaker 8: in that game. Then when you get behind, you got
- 1:02:52Speaker 8: to start throwing the ball and now you got to
- 1:02:54Speaker 8: try to find your way into the end zone. And
- 1:02:56Speaker 8: I felt like we had some opportunities and we just
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: didn't get that done. Two years ago, I think the
- 1:03:01Speaker 8: run game was where we didn't have as much success
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: as we would have liked. So what does that tell me?
- 1:03:07Speaker 8: I got to find a way to find balance in
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: this game. You know, when you're playing really good teams,
- 1:03:11Speaker 8: which Ohio State is a very good football team, you
- 1:03:14Speaker 8: have to try to find a way to have balance
- 1:03:16Speaker 8: in the game. Because The coaches are too good. The
- 1:03:20Speaker 8: players are too good. The players are too smart. And
- 1:03:24Speaker 8: when you become one-dimensional, you're that much easier to stop.
- 1:03:26Speaker 8: And so finding balance in a game like this is important.
- 1:03:30Speaker 8: You know, we hit a few of those passes. I
- 1:03:32Speaker 8: probably feel a little better about me as a play
- 1:03:34Speaker 8: caller in those games. You don't hit them, I don't
- 1:03:37Speaker 8: feel quite as good. You know, that's kind of the
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: life of a play caller. That's the way it goes,
- 1:03:40Speaker 8: you know.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: It is indeed. Okay.
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: We will be back to wrap up our number two
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: here on 13 Under the Zone. Third and final hour
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: of the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300 Design.
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: What's that? I didn't.
- 1:03:59Speaker 6: Know if we were going to come back with the
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: highlight montage there.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: Oh, I was going to come back with the highlight montage.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: I don't know why we didn't.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: I've got to get back into the habit of things, too.
- 1:04:12Speaker 6: You know what?
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: I actually looked back at the tape, and there was time.
- 1:04:15Speaker 7: You actually didn't come in before the montage. There was
- 1:04:17Speaker 7: an extra second.
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: Oh, really?
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you very much. I appreciate that.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: I'll tell you what, let's save it for a little later.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: We'll bring it back for folks who missed out on
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: the highlight montage. We'll do it in a little bit.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: Here's where I want to do that. I had to
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: make a correction, first of all. There is another FBS
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: team that is 2-0, and that would be USC.
- 1:04:37Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: I forgot about that. They played Friday night, and they
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: won over Fresno 39-0. Did they play week one, though,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: for named directional school?
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: They played San Jose State.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Three-name direction. So they played them.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: But the other team that is 2-0 in that early
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: stage are the Memphis Tigers. And they're kind of intriguing
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: in that they might have a leg up, an even
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: better opportunity than perhaps USC. And here's where I'm going
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: with this. USC, of course, has to compete in the
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: Big Ten. And they're going to have to deal... With,
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: you know, some of the best in all of college football,
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: including the team that's coming to Austin this week. They
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: have to deal with Ohio State. Penn State looked pretty
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: good there on Saturday in their win in the season opener.
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: Penn State has a real shot because they don't play
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: a lot of the top Big Ten teams this year.
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: I was talking about this out at Back Porch on Friday.
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: Their schedule is very, very fortunate in avoiding both Oregon
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: and and Indiana, and Ohio State.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and Matt Campbell's debut came off very, very well
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: off of that. The reason why I bring this up
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: with regard to Memphis is because Memphis stands a decent
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: shot at getting in to the playoff as a G6
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: representative due to the fact that they've already won a
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: couple of ballgames. On the road, they won at UNLV,
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: and then they defeated Arkansas State at home.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: Uh, on a Saturday. So they're off to a two
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: and O start are the tigers.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: And they may stand up there with say the service
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: academies and obviously Boise state as, as trying to get
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: in there. Well, guess what? Memphis plays at Boise this week.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: So we're going to have Dave will ocean, the play
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: by play voice, the Memphis tigers join us here in
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: just a few moments.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Uh, baseball that I wanted to get to, uh, uh,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: A couple of big series are getting underway. The Brewers
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: came back to beat the Cubs. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: were chasing a wild card, were in a scoreless game
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: with the Kansas City Royals going to the 10th. Arizona
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: scores five runs in the top.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Of the 10th. So you're thinking ballgame, right? Not quite.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Kansas City has come back with four in the bottom
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: of the 10th. Salvador Perez just hit a bases clearing
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: double and he represents a tying run with only one
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: out in the bottom of.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: The 10th in Kansas City. Pinch run. Yeah.
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: The craziness of baseball right now. Toward that end, here's
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: something else I was going to get to. There were
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: a couple of history making moments over the weekend in
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Major League Baseball.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: One of those.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Took place yesterday in San Diego. I don't know if
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: you heard about this. The Yankees were playing the Padres.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: Garrett Cole was on the mound. So Cole's on the
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: mound and the Padres, who have kind of stepped up
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: their game of late, come up and they hit three
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: straight home runs to start the game.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Back to back to back.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: That would be unusual enough had it only happened one
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: time in his career. But no, Garrett Cole did have
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: it happen to him four years ago when he allowed
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: the first three hitters on June 9, 2022 at Minnesota.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: So Garrett Cole is the only pitcher in Major League
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: history to allow back-to-back-to-back home runs to the first three
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: batters of a game more than once in his career.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: How weird is that number? He's the only guy ever
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: to do it.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: Twice it's happened where the first three guys have homered
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: off of him.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: That was one weird thing.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: The other one was Jake's team was playing my team
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: over the weekend in Los Angeles, Dodgers against the Nationals.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: And the Dodgers scored first in all three games and
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: had to come from behind yet to win all three games.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: They got a three-run homer by Tommy Edmond in the eighth.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: On Saturday night, they got a three-run homer from Mookie
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Betts in the bottom of the eighth last night.
- 1:09:17Speaker 7: I mean, the Nats are taking promo kids from the
- 1:09:20Speaker 7: back of our office here at iHeart and putting them
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: on the mound at this point.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: It must be that because I don't know if you've
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: heard this number. The Washington Nationals have set the major
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: league record for most blown saves in a season. Now
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: with 37 blown saves in a season.
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: Oh, but sure. Trade Kyle Finnegan for prospects. Yeah, it's
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: going to go great.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: Is that when you gave up on him?
- 1:09:45Speaker 7: Well, that was last year, so it was a move
- 1:09:48Speaker 7: that turned out to really hurt them because they are
- 1:09:51Speaker 7: wasting one of the best offenses in the league with
- 1:09:54Speaker 7: an now historically incompetent bullpen. The Nationals, Craig, are the
- 1:09:59Speaker 7: 2025 Dallas Cowboys of Major League Baseball right now.
- 1:10:04Speaker 6: Great offense, equally terrible defense and pitching.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: Yeah, they hope to be better defensively, and they look
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: decent in the preseason for what that's worth in the preseason.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: They did get bad news, or at least it was
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: released bad news today. We'll hear more from Brian Schottenheimer tomorrow.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: But Tyler Smith is out, I think, four to six
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: weeks with a fractured thumb. He's going to have to
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: undergo surgery tomorrow. So he's going to be out in
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: advance of the Cowboys season opener on Sunday night against
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: the New York Giants, which you can hear on our
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: sister station, 98.1 FM KVET.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: So there's that. I had my fantasy football draft last night. Actually,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: I don't usually make a habit of drafting Dallas Cowboys,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: but I did take Dak Prescott.
- 1:10:49Speaker 6: Let's see that team. Let's see.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: No, I got a D plus grade.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: Now, I get usually a D or a C minus
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: grade every year from the CBS Sportsline people.
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: That's based on their ranking, not yours.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: And not only that, their system, their algorithms are different
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: than ours. So it does that. I think it's okay.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: We'll see. I rolled the dice on a couple of players,
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: most notably Dallas. as a backup quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. You
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: guys play two quarterbacks though, right?
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: And Mahomes, two years ago when I had the number
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: one pick in the league, I drafted him first overall
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: two years ago before the injuries. I got Patrick Mahomes
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: at the bottom of the sixth round. Pretty good for
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: a two quarterback league.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: That's what I figured. That's what I figured.
- 1:11:32Speaker 6: Who'd you take a chance on otherwise?
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: We'll see how... We know what a workhorse Derrick Henry is.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: So we'll see... How that plays out.
- 1:11:43Speaker 6: Good pick, though. I like that schedule for the Ravens.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: I thought about that as well. I did have requisite
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Rams on the team. Kyron Williams, I got as a
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: running back for the team. Even Blake Corham, because Williams
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: tends to get banged up, so Corham would be the
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: guy to step in for.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: But I got him, like, 15th round pretty late. Yeah,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: good move.
- 1:12:00Speaker 6: This was the year I finally got Puka Nakua.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: Yeah, see? And I wanted him, and I didn't get
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: him on that. So, anyway....
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: The pro football notes, baseball notes come to mind and
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: those things as well. But up next, we go back
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: to college football. We'll talk about the Memphis Tigers and
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: we'll visit with Abel Ocean, their play-by-play voice, when we
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: continue on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: the IR Radio app. We welcome you back here.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: On a Monday.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: Labor Day holiday, but we're glad to be with you here,
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: Craig Way, alongside the producer, Jay Kerman. Nothing like a
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: little Paul Simon with going to Graceland. Not going exactly
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: to Graceland, but we are going to Memphis there to
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: visit with a longtime friend of mine and the voice
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: of the Memphis Tigers, Dave Woloshin, who joins us now.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Wolow, great to see you. How are you, my friend?
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: Uh-oh. Your intro says Hall of Famer. Is that correct?
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: I am.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: I am a Hall of Famer.
- 1:13:08Speaker 9: How in the world is a Hall of Famer working
- 1:13:10Speaker 9: on Labor Day? They should be much more respectful than that.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: I guess I could say you don't get to be
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: in the Hall of Fame unless you do work on holidays, right?
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: I'll tell you why.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Here's the simple explanation, Wolo. Sark has his press conference
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: on Monday. So if they're all working, they got the
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: press conference on Monday. And I'm over on campus until
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: after 1 o'clock in the afternoon, and my show starts
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: at 2. I might as well just come over here
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: and do the show, you know, and give everybody.
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: There you go.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: And so we hear from Sark, you know, on Mondays.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: But I'm glad you joined us. And Dave and I
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: have known each other a long time. Wolo and I
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: go back, I guess, almost, it'd be an even 40 years,
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: wouldn't it?
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: I mean, was it 80?
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: 85.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: 85 was when you came to Dallas.
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: I met you at TRLD in Dallas. You were a youngster.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: So were you.
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: I was young, too.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: We both worked at KRLD in Dallas there in 85
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: and 86.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: You think about this, Roger.
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: You know, we'd like to talk about coaching trees that
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: Roy Williams, Dean Smith of the coaching tree, and John
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Wood and all these great coaches at coaching trees. The
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: KRLD broadcaster coaching tree, even before Brad Champ, Frank Lieber,
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: the immortal Frank Lieber.
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: That's the guy that I replaced because of his– unfortunate passing.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: That's exactly right. And so you had Frank Lieber and
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: Vern Lundquist working there and doing Cowboys games. And then
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: Brad Sham, Chuck Cooperstein, Dave Woloshin, and myself, and George
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: Dunham and Craig Miller of the Ticket in Dallas were
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: with us as well later on.
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: Brian Briscoe was also kind of like the fill-in guy, uh,
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: great producer guy.
- 1:15:03Speaker 9: And, and, and, and he went to the motor sports way, right?
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: The Texas motor sports way.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: He did.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: He worked, he, he, he worked at, uh, uh, Texas
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: motor speedway. He did that for years now, uh, uh,
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: pretty much retired doing a podcast in Denton. That's, that's
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: called built for this. And it's, and it's really entertaining.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: It's really, in fact, I'm going to put him in
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: touch with you, if you don't mind, because I know
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: he'd love to have you on his podcast.
- 1:15:28Speaker 5: No, I would love to chat with him.
- 1:15:29Speaker 9: I would tell you, you're not going to believe this,
- 1:15:32Speaker 9: but we were doing, I can't remember if the game
- 1:15:35Speaker 9: was in Memphis or somewhere in Texas, probably in Texas,
- 1:15:38Speaker 9: because Fran Fraschilla was doing the game on TV. His
- 1:15:42Speaker 9: wife comes up to me and she goes, you know,
- 1:15:45Speaker 9: I just love listening to you.
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: You were part of the dream team.
- 1:15:49Speaker 9: She considered that group of 85 a dream team. And
- 1:15:54Speaker 9: if you think about it, Cooperstein, you, me, we're still
- 1:15:56Speaker 9: all working. And so is Sham.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: Yeah. How about Brad? They're going along. Yeah, it's amazing.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: You're mentioning the former Meg O'Connell, Meg Fraschilla, Fran's wife.
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: And at the time, Meg was working in the Southwest
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: Conference Media Relations Office.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: That's how she got to know us. That's how she
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: got to know us.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: Meg worked in the Southwest Conference Office and then met
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: Fran later when Fran was coaching and.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Married Fran. And they had two sons and yeah, great
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: people as well.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: So the reason I wanted Wolo on the show today
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: was not to talk about our indoor soccer backgrounds, because
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: we both have that. Wolo was the voice of the
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Memphis Rogues, and I was the voice of the Dallas
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Sidekicks for a time.
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: And don't forget the Memphis Americans. That was the first
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: one that.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: I did.
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: That was an MISL team. They took on Dallas. Who
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: was the guy?
- 1:16:50Speaker 9: There was a great player at Dallas. It was while
- 1:16:53Speaker 9: we were in Dallas.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: Short guy.
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: You're talking about the wonderful... Antonio Carlos Pecorari, who we
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: all knew as Tattoo.
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: Tattoo, that's it, yes.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: Tattoo is coaching now. He's coaching, yes.
- 1:17:08Speaker 5: So you called me to talk about my Cubs. I'm
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: very sad today. They blew.
- 1:17:12Speaker 9: A 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth and
- 1:17:16Speaker 9: lost 4-3.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: Oh, I saw Zephyr John let it get away.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw Zephyr John let it get away from
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: him when me as the Dodger fan is wanting to
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: see L.A. make up ground on Milwaukee there. So I
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: was rooting for the Cubs today as well. But the
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: reason I asked Wolo on the program today is not
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: any of the stuff we've just talked about, although it's
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: great to catch up. How many years now for you
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: is the voice of Memphis Tigers?
- 1:17:40Speaker 9: Well, I came back from Dallas to start doing basketball
- 1:17:44Speaker 9: and football for them on television. And then, I don't know,
- 1:17:47Speaker 9: I think it was 98 I transitioned over after doing
- 1:17:50Speaker 9: a bunch of ESPN stuff.
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: I transitioned over to radio. And so that's, you know,
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: really 86. Go back there.
- 1:17:57Speaker 9: So we're talking 40 years.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: Okay. The reason why I also bring this up.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: I've watched and listened, by the way, to Wolo call
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: the first two games of this football season for the
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Memphis Tigers. And I got a chance to hear and
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: watch with the zero week win over UNLV. And then
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: the other night driving home after the Texas-Texas State game,
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: I'm listening to you, I picked you up on SiriusXM,
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: when you're playing Arkansas State. And the Tigers won a
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: couple of ball games now. So Memphis, one of the
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: few teams that you could even have in a conversation
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: to talk about the possibility of being in the college
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: football playoff, that's 2-0.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: USC is there. Florida State can get there tonight if
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: they can.
- 1:18:50Speaker 7: Win.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: But USC, I think, I would submit, has a much
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: more difficult path to try to get to the playoff
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: existing in the Big Ten and having to deal with
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: with the likes of Ohio State and Penn State and
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Indiana and those. Of course, Memphis, a G6 school, is
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: in the American. Not to say it's an easy path,
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: because you have to go to what many consider to
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: be the favorite to be the one automatic out of
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: the G6, Boise State.
- 1:19:18Speaker 9: Well, the gamblers in Vegas agree with you. They made
- 1:19:20Speaker 9: it an eight and a half point game after it
- 1:19:22Speaker 9: opened up.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: Did they? Okay.
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: But we'll get to that in a moment, but I
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: want to get your thoughts on this Memphis team, which,
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: you know, I was, I was listening to you describe
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: the exploits on the field and a tremendous game from
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: Jalen Carter who ran for 183 yards. And before we
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: even get to that, you're on a new head coach.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: And Charles Huff, not only is the new head coach
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: at Memphis, Charles Huff is on his third head coaching
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: job in his many years. So he's been the turnaround
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: guy at Marshall, at Southern Miss, and now at Memphis.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: So how has it gone so far with Coach Huff and.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Him getting acclimating and getting the program off to a
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: good start?
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: Well, yeah, there were many question marks.
- 1:20:14Speaker 9: I really did not know what to expect going into Vegas.
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: You got 81 new players. 81.
- 1:20:21Speaker 9: You've got 61 transfers and 20 freshmen. You did have
- 1:20:26Speaker 9: a bunch of those transfers that came from that Southern
- 1:20:28Speaker 9: Miss school. And no one was able to go from
- 1:20:33Speaker 9: Marshall to Southern Miss to Memphis because they ran out
- 1:20:36Speaker 9: of eligibility.
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: But those players love Charles Huff. They really do. Charles
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: is a Nick Saban disciple. He also learned from James Franklin.
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: So he says.
- 1:20:47Speaker 9: He learned all about recruiting and how to work boosters
- 1:20:55Speaker 9: from Franklin. He learned about the process from Saban. Part
- 1:21:00Speaker 9: of that is you don't learn very much at all.
- 1:21:03Speaker 9: So I had no idea. I had no depth chart
- 1:21:07Speaker 9: until the night before the game.
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Oh, my goodness.
- 1:21:11Speaker 5: We had a thought about how it was going, but
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: that's it.
- 1:21:14Speaker 9: And by the way, you know when Arkansas State give
- 1:21:17Speaker 9: us their dub chart for the game on Saturday?
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: Literally five minutes before the game. So, you know, you
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: can find out ways.
- 1:21:27Speaker 9: There's ourlands.com and you talk to the other broadcasters and
- 1:21:30Speaker 9: they'll give you some, but they can't give you everything.
- 1:21:34Speaker 9: And a kid that you know, that Owens kid, Trey Owens,
- 1:21:38Speaker 9: was a backup attack.
- 1:21:39Speaker 5: He's a junior. I guess he couldn't beat out Arch.
- 1:21:42Speaker 9: He was the number 16 quarterback prospect of the class.
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: Of 24 when he went to Texas. We didn't know
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: if it was going to be him. Butch Jones said
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: it could be four guys. Four guys. Come on now.
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: But that's the way it is. So we didn't know
- 1:21:56Speaker 5: anything about Huff.
- 1:21:57Speaker 9: Huff is a great orator without telling you a whole lot. Um,
- 1:22:02Speaker 9: until finally we went to this production meeting that was
- 1:22:05Speaker 9: with Tim Brando. So, cause the way it works is
- 1:22:08Speaker 9: you don't get coordinators and in your production meeting, it's
- 1:22:12Speaker 9: always going to be TV and radio. So you've got
- 1:22:14Speaker 9: to share your time kind of, and it's hard to
- 1:22:16Speaker 9: share with Tim Brando.
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: Love the guy, but it takes them about 20 minutes
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: to ask one question. Um, But we did find out
- 1:22:25Speaker 5: some stuff then.
- 1:22:26Speaker 9: And you can't help but like Charles.
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: He is a good football coach. When he tells you.
- 1:22:31Speaker 9: About the strategy and why he's doing this and why
- 1:22:34Speaker 9: he's using this guy and what he expects and how
- 1:22:37Speaker 9: that's overrated.
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: You understand that he really knows X's and O's.
- 1:22:43Speaker 9: And he knows motivation or he couldn't get these these
- 1:22:45Speaker 9: kids to keep following him.
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: So I'm really impressed with that. I had no idea.
- 1:22:51Speaker 9: Memphis's defense won the game. In Las Vegas, it was
- 1:22:55Speaker 9: really their offense and their offensive line.
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: So the two lines.
- 1:22:59Speaker 9: O-line, D-line have really been the factors in the game
- 1:23:02Speaker 9: against Arkansas State. They just took over and they trained
- 1:23:05Speaker 9: to 30 yards rushing and two 100-yard runners.
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: You mentioned Jalen Carter and Manny Covey.
- 1:23:11Speaker 9: So Manny Covey is a kid that came from the
- 1:23:13Speaker 9: University of Cincinnati, had a great game in the AutoZone
- 1:23:17Speaker 9: Liberty Bowl the year before, liked the stadium.
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: And I guess, I don't know how he knew Huff,
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: but he did.
- 1:23:22Speaker 9: Or maybe he knew Kevin Decker, who was the OC
- 1:23:26Speaker 9: that came from Old Dominion, he's really a bright guy.
- 1:23:30Speaker 9: He had actually been a player for Tim Cramsey, who's
- 1:23:35Speaker 9: the OC at Arkansas that was Memphis' OC for the
- 1:23:38Speaker 9: last four or five years. So it's a similar offense,
- 1:23:41Speaker 9: but it's even more spread out. It's really fun to watch.
- 1:23:44Speaker 9: But it's the line play on both sides that has
- 1:23:47Speaker 9: impressed me so far. But they haven't seen a team
- 1:23:51Speaker 9: as good as the guys that almost upset Oregon today.
- 1:23:57Speaker 9: Boise is really good. They got two good running backs.
- 1:24:00Speaker 9: They got a really good quarterback. Memphis beat Boise a
- 1:24:03Speaker 9: few years ago. I think it was 23. And believe
- 1:24:06Speaker 9: it or not, the kid was there then. He was
- 1:24:08Speaker 9: a freshman. And Memphis got a pretty good lead on them.
- 1:24:11Speaker 9: And they just changed quarterbacks to see what would happen
- 1:24:13Speaker 9: in the second half. And Madsen almost brought them all
- 1:24:16Speaker 9: the way back. So, you know, this game is a
- 1:24:20Speaker 9: tough game that Bluefield is hard to play on for visitors.
- 1:24:24Speaker 9: They're really good there. It's their 40th anniversary. Their record
- 1:24:27Speaker 9: over 40 years is pretty darn impressive. And it's a
- 1:24:31Speaker 9: little like Vegas. I mean, Vegas was about a six
- 1:24:34Speaker 9: and a half, seven and a half point favorite. And
- 1:24:36Speaker 9: that's what Boise is right now. So who knows?
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: Tell me a little bit about Marcus Stokes, what you
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: saw out of him at quarterback.
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: Boy, Marcus Stokes was so nervous.
- 1:24:51Speaker 9: In that first game. He threw his first two passes
- 1:24:56Speaker 9: into the dirt.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: That sounds like Arch Manning last year in Columbus.
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: Exactly. Exactly.
- 1:25:04Speaker 9: And then toward the end of the first half, he
- 1:25:08Speaker 9: runs over the line and throws the football. He went
- 1:25:13Speaker 9: over the line of scrimmage and threw the football. So
- 1:25:15Speaker 9: he had really lost his awareness a little bit. And
- 1:25:19Speaker 9: of course, the The pass was completed. I'm going, of
- 1:25:23Speaker 9: course the pass was completed. The guy that was covering
- 1:25:25Speaker 9: the receiver came to tackle you. But then in the
- 1:25:30Speaker 9: second half, he really, he steadied himself.
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: And he played pretty well. I thought he played fair.
- 1:25:37Speaker 9: I don't think we've seen the best of him yet,
- 1:25:40Speaker 9: but he played a couple of touchdown passes, but he
- 1:25:43Speaker 9: threw two picks. So we'll just have to wait and
- 1:25:46Speaker 9: see how he plays out.
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: You mentioned the line play in the interior lines on
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: both sides.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: Do you feel good about the defense? I mean, they've
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: given up.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: Some points in the game, but on the road at
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: UNLV was going to be tough, and they held the
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: line late in the ballgame and then did so as well,
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: stopping Arkansas State down the stretch.
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: Had him there. I'll tell you what. Let's do this.
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: We'll take a break, and we'll get him back, and
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: we'll get a few more minutes out of him before
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: we wrap up here. here on a Monday afternoon on
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:26:19Speaker 8: But I know who placed the call. Cause Monk took
- 1:26:24Speaker 8: the message and he wrote it on the wall.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: All right, so we've reestablished the long-distance connection here with
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: the voice of the Memphis Tigers. Well, I was right
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: in the middle of asking you about how you felt
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: about the.
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: Can I just say something really quick?
- 1:26:40Speaker 5: I love that song.
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: I do like the Chuck Berry version better, just so
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: you know. If I ever want to.
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: Get it, you do that.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: Next time, you'll get the original from Chuck Berry instead
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: of the Johnny Rivers rendition.
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: I have no disrespect for Johnny Rivers.
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: Believe me.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: That's true.
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: Maybe we should restrict Johnny Rivers to secret agent man
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: and some things like that.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: Slow dance and sway into the music, stuff like that
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: as well.
- 1:27:09Speaker 5: I love that song. Absolutely.
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: I was just starting to ask him when we had
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: the dropout. I was starting to ask you how you
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: felt about the defense. Gave up some points in each
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: of the first two ballgames for the Tigers, yet got
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: stops certainly down the stretch in the second half of
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: the game when you had to have it.
- 1:27:27Speaker 5: Well, that's it. They have been a second-half team.
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: Memphis has outscored the opposition in the second half, 41-14.
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: And I think a lot of that, Craig, and this
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: is what Huff has preached all year long, he does
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: these training drills the players have talked about that are
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: just so tough. And they, they just say, as, as
- 1:27:48Speaker 4: they're doing it, they're, they've all accepted his culture, right?
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: I told you he's a players coach and they really
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: had come, you know, some have, have, have, uh, transferred
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: schools with him. Like he had 30 guys that went
- 1:27:59Speaker 4: from Marshall to Southern Miss, um, and the 18 from
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: heat from Southern Miss to Memphis. Uh, They bought into this. So,
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: you know, he says to them, look, I'll, I'll make
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: you a better player.
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: You'll win.
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: If you listen to what I say. And part of
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: that is you've got to be in the best shape
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: of your life. We're going to put weight on you
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: or you're going to lose weight. You're going to go
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: on this diet. You're going to do this training. You've
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: got these, these numbers and goals. When, when it comes
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: to weight training, we've got these numbers and goals when it,
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: when it comes to cardio and this, They believe when
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: the fourth quarter comes, the other team's going to wilt,
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: and so far that's been the case. Memphis has just
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: dominated the fourth quarter in both games. And it's come
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: from lines. You asked me specifically about the defensive line.
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: He's playing 10 different guys. He's got two guys that
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: are outstanding. One's a young guy who played for McSouthern
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: this last year named Elijah Kinsler. He's a kid out
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: of New Jersey, and he's the guy they had to
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: put weight on. He was like 230. They list him
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: now at 256. They said at one point he got 260.
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: And then there's this guy who started in Texas.
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: So you may know him.
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: He went to Arizona State and then to Southern, and
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: his name is Jamon Tapp. He's a kid out of Louisiana.
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: He's just a high-energy guy, and he's made him a
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: good player. There's an interesting thing that Huff said. He goes,
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: and so this guy was on his third school. Now
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: he's on his fourth, but his third school, he went.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: To Southern Miss.
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: And Huff says, I'm really good with guys who are
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: on their last chance. I'm the guy you want to
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: play for if you're going to last chance you need.
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: Because I can relate to you and I will make
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: you better, but you've got to live by.
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: What I say.
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: And he goes, most of the time, it doesn't always work.
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: Most of the time, because they know it's their last chance,
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: they're going to listen to him and they buy in.
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: Well, and by the way, since that was two schools
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: ago when he was here, I see that he's changed
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: his name slightly.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: When he was here was Jamond. So apparently going by
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: Jamond now may have helped his game. He was Jamond
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: when he was here, and he was a good player
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: when he was here.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: He just got caught up in a numbers game.
- 1:30:14Speaker 7: We've got an.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: All-American playing on that same spot on the rush end
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: as a freshman two years ago came in, Colin Simmons.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: Who's a preseason All-American now, and that's right. I think
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: he just got caught up in the numbers game.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: Let me ask you about this.
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: I kind of build this in talking about it today
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: as saying that Memphis might have as good a shot
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: as any G6 team to get into the playoff if,
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: and this is obviously the big if, if you win
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: the game in Boise this week. Because I look at
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: the rest of your schedule. You've got UT Martin, and
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: then you've got an open day. My goodness, Charlotte lost
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: to the Citadel. They lost to an FCS team over
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: the weekend.
- 1:30:55Speaker 7: I know.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: Moving the football at Duke, and they lost. You have
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: ECU at home. You do have Army at home.
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: You do have to go to South Florida, but they're
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: rebuilding with Golish having gone to Auburn. Maybe that trip
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: to Annapolis helps determine conference championship seeding or something like
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: that before you finish on Black Friday against Temple. Do
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: you see it in similar ways, Wolo, if the Tigers
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: are able to find a way to get that win
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: on the Smurf turf that they got a shot to
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: win run the table and get into the American Championship
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: game with a chance perhaps to play for.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: A playoff spot?
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: Two thoughts.
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I think since the college football playoff expansion and
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: the group of six has sort of been now it's
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: the best ranked group of six. Doesn't have to be
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: the champion like it used to be thanks to the
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: ACC and Duke last year. I think this is the
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: best draft of, at this time, the best G6 matchup
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: in the history of the separation between the P4 and
- 1:32:02Speaker 4: the G6. Because UNLV was the second best G6 team
- 1:32:08Speaker 4: coming in. Memphis took care of them on the road.
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: A lot of people thought Memphis was the third and
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: Boise is number one. And Boise didn't hurt their stock
- 1:32:18Speaker 4: by going to Oregon and being tied at the half
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: and being tied at 27 and losing by a touchdown.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: I think if you're Bob Arum and you're promoting this game,
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: this is maybe the greatest G6 matchup since the college
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: football playoff expansion and the seat at the table. Because
- 1:32:38Speaker 4: it's clearly defined now. These are the two best teams
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: at the moment. Now, you mentioned the American schedule. Every
- 1:32:45Speaker 4: tough game, although Army looks like they're a little bit
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: better than maybe I thought. They put 59. I know
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: it's on Bryant, but you put 59 on a team
- 1:32:53Speaker 4: is pretty good. Um, every other game that, uh, that
- 1:32:59Speaker 4: the prognosticators preseason thought was tough is on the road.
- 1:33:03Speaker 5: You got to go to USF.
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: Brian Hartline was the big hot hire because he was
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: the OC at Ohio state. Uh, you've got to go.
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: to South, uh, to, uh, Tulane, you got to go
- 1:33:14Speaker 4: to Navy. And most people pick Navy kind of to
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: win this league. So, uh, even though to me, they
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: lost their quarterback, who was one of the best they've
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: ever had in Blake Corvette, they lost their best tackler, uh,
- 1:33:26Speaker 4: tackling machine and defensive lineman. They lost their best running
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: back and they best lost their best receiver from last year.
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: Now there's great continuity there. So, uh, I don't know.
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: You've got to play in Annapolis. That's a tough place
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: to play. So I would say to you that Memphis'
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: schedule in the conference is one of the toughest, if
- 1:33:48Speaker 4: not the toughest. But I don't think they have to
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: win every game. If they get the leg up here
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: and they only lose.
- 1:33:54Speaker 5: One, say, in conference, I think the winner.
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: clearly, of this Saturday game in Boise, has the leg
- 1:34:02Speaker 4: up on everybody in the G6 to make the playoffs.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: Absolutely. Couldn't agree more. Hey, before I let you go,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: for folks who don't know... Lola will be in town
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: December 16th. Memphis plays Texas in basketball.
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: So tell me what kind of team Penny Hardaway is
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: going to bring in to Moody. I see you've got
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: two big-time exhibition games in Starkville and Mississippi State against
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: Arkansas in Fayetteville. Texas has to play St. John's at
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: Madison Square Garden. That's an exhibition game. I think that's
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: their one public exhibition.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: But what kind of team is Penny Hardaway going to
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: bring into Austin in December?
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: That's another one of those. Every single player, well, there's
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: two guys on the team. One that was at the
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: end of the bench is a high-flying athletic guy. And
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: the other is a pretty good guy in Fedford. All
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: the other guys are new. You've got a kid named
- 1:34:59Speaker 4: Reed who went to Northwestern, but he played at USF.
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: I've seen him before. He's really a good point guard.
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: You've got some really good three-point shooters. And here's the caveat.
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: Here's what I think will make them a good team.
- 1:35:14Speaker 4: They've got a kid who will be 25 in December
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: named Popovich. He played in the Polish league prior.
- 1:35:20Speaker 5: I think he's Ukrainian.
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: He is truly a pro, and we're waiting on eligibility
- 1:35:27Speaker 4: with him. They think they're going to get that. He
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: may have to sit on a few games early in
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: the year, but he's going to be the key that
- 1:35:35Speaker 4: really makes this team, I think, a solid ball club.
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: I think they'll be one of the best in the American.
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: How they will line up with you, that's another story.
- 1:35:44Speaker 5: We'll see.
- 1:35:45Speaker 4: You've got to play in Austin, but I'm hoping that
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: that means that you guys come to Memphis the year
- 1:35:50Speaker 4: or two after.
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: I hope so.
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: I loved the one game I got to call there.
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: Two nights before Texas played USC for the national championship
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: in football, remember, was there when Texas played Memphis when
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: they had P.J. Tucker when they played there. That was
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: a heck of a ball game that night. I do
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: remember that very well. So you're telling me this guy
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: Popovich will be in a Memphis uniform if Lane Kiffin
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: doesn't get him through the portal first.
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: Can you believe what we're doing here?
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: The reason why I bring this up, for folks who
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: don't know, Dave also, like I do, hosts a daily
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: show in Memphis. And I can only imagine, because you're
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: only an hour away from Oxford, I can only imagine
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: what your show has been like over the past couple
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: of weeks, given everything that's gone down in the name
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: of the SEC and Lane Kiffin and LSU.
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: Well, Lane Kiffin is a magnet. You can't help but
- 1:36:50Speaker 4: watch him. he's like a car wreck. You know, you,
- 1:36:54Speaker 4: you want to turn away, but you can't. This is
- 1:36:57Speaker 4: a guy. He doesn't need more help. Look what he
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: did to Clemson.
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: My God.
- 1:37:03Speaker 5: And he's literally willing to.
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: Risk 50% of his budget, 50% of his games, because
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: they can suspend them for 50%. And literally if, you know,
- 1:37:17Speaker 4: because Clemson, Greg Senkin, the SEC commissioner, has sued Lane Kiffin,
- 1:37:22Speaker 4: sued LSU, sued the administration. It's unbelievable. But he's saying,
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: and everybody in the league agreed, LSU has said, we're
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: not allowing players who have signed pro contracts.
- 1:37:35Speaker 5: Back into the league.
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: You made your decision to go pro.
- 1:37:38Speaker 5: That's it.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: Now, the European thing is a little different, Greg, because
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: they don't have a college system. So they put them
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: into the pros when they're 12 years old.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: To me, that's a little different story than a guy
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: like Daquan White or Zabian Harris, who said at the
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: end of their senior year, last year in Oxford, you
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: know what? We got a chance to make an NFL team.
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: We're going to go.
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: And they signed a contract. to play for those NFL teams, respectively.
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: And then because they can make more money at LSU
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: with Lane Kiffin and still go back to the NFL,
- 1:38:14Speaker 4: and they want guaranteed slots, they go, well, why wouldn't.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: We go back?
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: And you know Kiffin, he's going to.
- 1:38:21Speaker 5: Do whatever it takes to win.
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: But the commissioner is saying, don't do it. Because if
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: you do, here are the penalties. And I don't the
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: judge that made an injunction from a temporary to a
- 1:38:34Speaker 4: full injunction, I thought he was going to bail out
- 1:38:38Speaker 4: Lane Kiffin by not allowing it. But once he did, now...
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: The administration probably sat down Lane Kiffin and said, hey.
- 1:38:47Speaker 5: Let's not take a chance.
- 1:38:48Speaker 4: Because these guys, look what happened with Texas.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: Tech and Sorsby.
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: I mean, the league basically said, we.
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: Won't play you.
- 1:38:54Speaker 4: That could have happened with the SEC and Lane Kiffin.
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: No doubt about it.
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: By the way, since you're right about the Europeans coming in,
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: which gives you time to work on the pronunciations of
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: Matas Fokatidis and Matas Lorenzikas before you get here in December.
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: Well, look, I did tennis. I mean golf.
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: And I've done, I'm sorry, soccer with all those Czechoslovakian names.
- 1:39:19Speaker 5: This is nothing.
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: Yeah, Lithuanians are easy, right? Yeah.
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: Hey, give my love to Gail. Appreciate you taking the time.
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: And I'll look forward to seeing you in December. But
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: best of luck up in Boise this week. And I
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: hope it goes really well for you. And I appreciate
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: you joining me today.
- 1:39:39Speaker 5: My pleasure. Happy holiday to you and your loved ones.
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: And I can't wait to see you in December.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: Okay. Thanks, Willow.
- 1:39:47Speaker 5: You got it.
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: That's Dave Woloshin, play-by-play voice of the Memphis Tigers. We'll
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: be back to wrap up today's edition of the program
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:39:55Speaker 8: All right, Texas fans, game day checklist.
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: Burnt orange? Check. Radio on AM 1300.
