Transcript
- 0:05Hi, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:08a Thursdays. The Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:11Trent Condon and Ken Miller kicking off 6 hours of Iowa
- 0:15based program. Thanks for starting your
- 0:17afternoon here with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:20program at the bottom of the hour around that time we'll head
- 0:23north of the Twin Cities den Mizutani St.
- 0:26Paul Pioneer Press. He's been covering the T Wolves,
- 0:29doing all the home games, been in the building and writing
- 0:32about them on the road. Also yesterday, yesterday was at
- 0:34Vikings OTAs. Little recap, a little Intel
- 0:38perhaps on how JJ McCarthy looked as he and the other JJ
- 0:44the All pro JJ was on the field together for one of the few
- 0:48times in the last little while. So we'll get the latest on how
- 0:51the Vikings looked OTAs from what the media could see
- 0:54yesterday, but Dane Moussatani will join us on that.
- 0:57Maybe a little twin stuff, but recap the Wolves season.
- 1:01The 2425 season comes to an end. Last night in in a whimper as I
- 1:05got beat by 30 crying out loud. So Dame Mazzutani, our only
- 1:09guest in our number one, our number 2, Elliot Clough is going
- 1:12to join us no longer with rivals, but some things on the
- 1:16back burner including a stint next week with Sean Roberts to
- 1:20kick off Monday and Tuesday. He will Co host with Sean right
- 1:23here on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 1:26Perhaps something percolating there, We don't know, but we'll
- 1:28see. Elliot Clough.
- 1:30And then we'll go from the Hawks to the Clones with Bill Seals.
- 1:35That he covers Iowa State. cyclonereport.com.
- 1:38There's both Iowa and Iowa State related news when it comes to
- 1:41football, and some of the kickoff times have been
- 1:44announced within the last couple of hours.
- 1:46The SEI Hawk game is going to kick off at 11:00 in the
- 1:49morning. You happy with that?
- 1:51Yeah. You like it?
- 1:53Yeah. It's a national spotlight.
- 1:55It's and yes, and Fox gets it. I mean.
- 1:57The the complaints, it's, it's all over the.
- 1:59Place no I wish it was at night I mean I'm a going, but I.
- 2:02Just like you're, you're in a different world too, right?
- 2:05You're sitting at home. Night games are hard.
- 2:08Night games are hard for that one for the most of the public.
- 2:11You know why? Because it's a party.
- 2:13And most people, when you're partying all day that game at
- 2:15night, you're not seeing all of it.
- 2:18We'll just put it that way, alright?
- 2:20For the people, for the. 100 You could put a slug in the jug or
- 2:23pace yourself a little bit You. Don't have to tell me.
- 2:26I mean I'm talking about 10s of thousands of people, The 100,000
- 2:30people that are going to descend upon AIMS.
- 2:32Tell them. A big noon kick off.
- 2:34Will it be there? Yes, it has to be right.
- 2:37Well, they already put the announcement.
- 2:39I mean the graphic was put out by Fox.
- 2:40So they are going to be there done deal as as Doctor Man
- 2:43speculated with us on Tuesday. Yeah.
- 2:46So do you like the 11:00 better for Psy Hawk or for Black
- 2:50Friday? Well, 'cause that's an 11.
- 2:53In general for me personally, I like them either way.
- 2:56I mean, if it had my choice I'd go back to traditional 1:00
- 2:59kickoffs but never gonna get. That no, those days are long
- 3:02gone between the last year on Big or on ESPN Plus and we have,
- 3:07we've seen that. We've seen a few of those really
- 3:09once a year names, yeah. But between the two, what do I
- 3:12prefer more? I think the Black Friday game, I
- 3:15like the spotlight of it, where it is that stand alone well.
- 3:19There's competition this year, there's more games, there's.
- 3:22More games, but it's not the same.
- 3:23It's not the same as a college football Saturday.
- 3:26Now we know Week 2 is also not very good, but I'm just speaking
- 3:28in generalities. More Black Friday Iowa, Nebraska
- 3:31has become a tradition. It has, yes.
- 3:34Nebraska traditionally playing on this day, Colorado and before
- 3:37that, Oklahoma. So it's kind of their spot.
- 3:39But I went out for this last decade and what they've been
- 3:41able to do in the game, I think it's a game that nationally
- 3:44resonates. And because of that, I like,
- 3:46let's just open up the day and we're going to go right into
- 3:48that and begin it now. You're talking about a short
- 3:50week, one last day of rest. That's also a component there.
- 3:53But you know what? Ferris isn't is doesn't.
- 3:55Seemingly, he's not as bothered by that as he was when the game
- 3:58first begins on. That day, I think he kind of
- 4:00likes it. Well, I think he he believes
- 4:02they have an advantage. He believes.
- 4:04It didn't in the beginning. Right.
- 4:06But they'd also been through it. They'd gone through those short
- 4:09weeks and Iowa hadn't. I wonder in a quiet moment, and
- 4:13we'll never actually get this from Kurt cuz it's Kurt Ferrets.
- 4:16He has such a coaching advantage.
- 4:18Not just him as a head coach, him and his staff over every
- 4:22staff that's been in Nebraska. And we'll see if Rule can change
- 4:24that. But his staff has been so much,
- 4:26I mean, run circles around that group of buffoons on the other
- 4:29side of the. River, are you including Brian
- 4:31Ferrets? Besides the sun, OK, bloodlines
- 4:34cut off. They have run circles over
- 4:36around them. Nebraska's had a more talented
- 4:39team almost every single year in terms of just Rod.
- 4:42Palace, You could say that about a lot of I was at.
- 4:45Absolutely. But Nebraska?
- 4:46Up your point. Yes, at the top of the list.
- 4:48And he says short week advantage us.
- 4:51Short week, that works better for us, that rule.
- 4:54We'll see if he can change that. But a decade into this thing
- 4:57now, that has been an advantage for the Hawkeyes.
- 4:59Texas and Texas A&M are moving the Black Friday.
- 5:02The Egg Bowl's moving the Black Friday.
- 5:04I don't know how many more games are going to find their way over
- 5:07there, but I kind of liked it when there was only a few.
- 5:10I know that the NF LS elbowing their way in there.
- 5:12What do we get this year is the Chiefs, Raiders on Black Friday?
- 5:15It's Chief, somebody I want to say on Black Friday.
- 5:18Regardless, it's for college football for me anyways.
- 5:21But we're starting to see some of the games that have been
- 5:24announced. Iowa State's got a bunch of
- 5:26them. No, it's the Bears.
- 5:27Eagles is Black Friday. Oh, is it?
- 5:29So when do the Chiefs play Chiefs Raiders?
- 5:33I thought they. Played.
- 5:33You're throwing a lot at me here.
- 5:34Geez, get me on my toes right? Maybe.
- 5:36That was last year. It was, was it?
- 5:40Well, what? What are the Thanksgiving games
- 5:41this year? They're, oh, they're playing the
- 5:44Cowboys. The Chiefs are, yes, good,
- 5:48right, 3:30. Oh man, I'm all over.
- 5:52Well, what is so the Black Friday game is.
- 5:54Yeah, I had that right. Packers, Lions, Chiefs, Cowboys.
- 5:57And then the Nightcaps. The Eagles.
- 5:58The Ravens, Black Friday Eagles. Bears.
- 6:02I like it. What was What's the night Game?
- 6:06Bengals at a Ravens. Oh, that and Joe Burrows.
- 6:09Pissed. Yes, because they only play
- 6:12primetime Thursday games. Baltimore.
- 6:14Seemingly. Never in Cincinnati.
- 6:16No, I make any. He's got a point.
- 6:17He does have a point. Iowa State's kickoffs.
- 6:20We knew about the K State game, that it was going to lead off
- 6:24the day at 11:00 on ESPN. Now we know when the Seihawk
- 6:28game is going to be played. There's one before that.
- 6:30South Dakota, right? That's a 230, and that's also on
- 6:34Big Fox. It is.
- 6:36But this just goes to kind of back up the point of maybe not
- 6:40the shiniest of weeks. What else is takes place that
- 6:42that week? Well, I'm kind of surprised at
- 6:45Fox 2:30 in the afternoon. Wonder what NBC will have?
- 6:52Well, now you're I'm bringing all this up here and trying to
- 6:55get through feels like, hey, you got me like 6000 tabs open over
- 6:59here. You're keeping me on my toes.
- 7:00All right, so I we're talking Week 2.
- 7:02That's what you're looking at Week 2.
- 7:04Let's get into it. TV schedules, college football
- 7:08and Week 2. What else is out there that
- 7:11week? Because I was with you, South
- 7:12Dakota, Iowa State on big Fox at 2:30, not in a weird 5:00 game
- 7:19like Iowa has in week one against Albany.
- 7:21And that's an odd one. Here's what we have on the
- 7:23slate. Texas play host to San Jose
- 7:26State? Good.
- 7:28Texas A&M? OK, hosting, yes.
- 7:31Utah State, OK, doesn't exactly get the juices flowing.
- 7:36Here's one it actually is decent. 2:30 on the Deuce,
- 7:39Kansas at Missouri. I like.
- 7:41That that's a nice game, yes. Fresno at Oregon State on the
- 7:45CWI know you'll be locked in. Florida hosts in state rival
- 7:49South Florida. Arkansas hosts in state rival
- 7:54Arkansas State. I might watch that game a little
- 7:56bit. That's on the SEC Network at
- 7:584:00, just because Iowa State, of course, plays Arkansas State.
- 8:02So at least at at minimum that's going to get a DVR click that's
- 8:05going to get the older record button on DIRECTV.
- 8:08Yeah. Skin and through this thing is
- 8:11hideous. Stanford at BYU.
- 8:14And that's a late, late game, is it not?
- 8:16Illinois at Duke. That's all right.
- 8:18It's OK, just a whole bunch. But you know what, Trent, you
- 8:24know, we're discussing right now, we're talking about college
- 8:26football. We actually have some kickoff
- 8:27times and it feels a little bit realer.
- 8:29Is that a word realer, More real, more real?
- 8:32It feels like it's a little bit more real that it is coming,
- 8:35that the long wait is we're starting to check some boxes
- 8:38with some kickoff times that have been announced.
- 8:40So another component to the Iowa State part of the schedule I
- 8:43thought was interesting is it's just the four first four weeks
- 8:46and that's it. No homecoming, no night game, no
- 8:51moving to do a Friday night, none of that.
- 8:53But also Speaking of the Arkansas State game, that that
- 8:58game's going to be on real TV on the Deuce.
- 9:00I've had a crazy weird time. Anything like?
- 9:03Middle of the afternoon, right? Yeah. 3:00 There was part of me
- 9:08wondering, is that ticketed for an ESPN Plus?
- 9:12Is this going to be something with the new app that's coming
- 9:14out with ESPN? Yeah.
- 9:15You know what I don't understand what, what are we doing here?
- 9:18What, what is going to change for for me, for you?
- 9:21We're both. So we're both ESPN Plus
- 9:23subscribers. And the way that I understand it
- 9:27is you have a subscription to ESPN Plus coupled with your
- 9:31DIRECTV or your cable system, whatever.
- 9:33Which I do. Yeah, I have both.
- 9:35That you're not going to have to go out and pay extra like the
- 9:37ESPN Plus games, those things, that it's all coming together
- 9:41under one umbrella. That's my understanding is if
- 9:44you're already paying for it, it's nothing extra.
- 9:46It's nothing more. Don't have to do anything,
- 9:48uninstall another app or their password.
- 9:50Yeah, it's going to be the same and it'll eventually update and
- 9:53everything will be in there and you're going to be OK.
- 9:55That's my understanding of it. This is more for the cable
- 9:59cutters or people. We talked about the cable
- 10:02nevers, the people now in their 20s and into their 30s that have
- 10:05never had cable and satellite before and trying to get them
- 10:08now on board, actually spending money on ESPN 'cause they
- 10:12haven't. No.
- 10:14Well, it's going to force them to do so.
- 10:16And that's the hope is what this eventually turns into is you're
- 10:20going to be able to bring all those people back in.
- 10:22The people that the last decade haven't been spending on ESPN,
- 10:25they'll be spending in this direction.
- 10:27OK, good. So those are the kickoff times
- 10:30as we know it. And again, it just feels like
- 10:32it's a little bit, you can almost grab it, right?
- 10:34You can almost wrap your arms around.
- 10:35Are you ready for 5:00 Iowa Albany?
- 10:39What a weird. Weird start when that one's
- 10:41being who's got that BTN. I think let me pull it up here.
- 10:46FS1 game, if memory serves, something like yeah, it's it's a
- 10:50weird 1 though. 5:00 kickoff. Well, I had the e-mail and then
- 10:54I must have deleted it. But yeah, 5:00 for week 1.
- 10:57Of course we know week two, 11:00 with big Fox.
- 11:01So. And we know 11:00 on on Black
- 11:03Friday. Yes, the new Big Noon kickoff is
- 11:07going to be in Ames. I just sent you the announcement
- 11:10that came from their Twitter account.
- 11:12Week 1 they're in Columbus. Week 2, they're in Ames.
- 11:15Week 3. Where are they?
- 11:18They're making a trip to Chicagoland.
- 11:20All the Northwestern game. Northwestern's got a big game.
- 11:22Who are they playing? Oregon, right?
- 11:24Oregon at Northwestern Week 3. Those are locked and loaded.
- 11:29The first three stops for Big Noon kick off.
- 11:32We do know that I would get, say, a night game at Kinnick in
- 11:36middle of September, right? A night game against.
- 11:39UMass UMass, that is a BTN affair, so at least it'll be at
- 11:44least we got one under the lights.
- 11:45Will there be another one come their way?
- 11:47As far as night game they usually get?
- 11:49I mean, that can't be the only night game, right?
- 11:51You wouldn't think so. Also thought it was interesting.
- 11:54The USC game though, there is no television that is attached to
- 11:57it. It'll either be a 2 or 230 kick
- 12:00off on Saturday. So no moving this to a Friday
- 12:03night like we saw last year for UCLAI know that's going to make
- 12:06a lot of Hawkeye fans happy because wanted to go.
- 12:11Because it was a Friday night, that was, yeah.
- 12:12Yeah, had the plan. Yeah, we're going to make this
- 12:14happen this Friday night. Just completely changed the
- 12:17plans because instead of hey, you know what, we'll duck out,
- 12:20get a Thursday evening flight. Good luck.
- 12:22Yeah, now you're leaving Wednesday, basically your whole
- 12:24week's ruin. And so people are going to
- 12:26hopefully be able to make that one happen right before
- 12:29Thanksgiving, November 15th. For that one.
- 12:32The Indiana game also got. Here's the announcement.
- 12:35It'll be either at 11 or 2:30 or three.
- 12:40Thank you for that. And then the Friday night game
- 12:43against Rutgers, I think it sets up perfectly though, in the way
- 12:47that it goes because of who they play beforehand.
- 12:50Again, short week, you're going out to Rutgers.
- 12:52We play UMass the week before and that should be deep reserves
- 12:57into the ball game. Well, you want me to think?
- 12:59Coast in guys are ready knowing that the week's going to look
- 13:03different. Plus, they've been through it
- 13:05and didn't look like it against UCLA last year, but they've been
- 13:08through it so many Times Now it's it's not as big of a deal
- 13:10as it was in the past. Fun stuff.
- 13:13Let's let's go back to last night and and talk a little bit
- 13:16about the basketball game. And maybe my biggest take away
- 13:18from this whole thing is just how much better OKC is than the
- 13:21T Wolves. What what does this do as far as
- 13:24as how you now view the 2425 season for Minnesota?
- 13:28Still a success. Was it?
- 13:30Back-to-back seasons of getting to the Western Conference
- 13:32finals. This is an organization.
- 13:35They'd only won one playoff series before the last two
- 13:37years, only won two in one season.
- 13:39They'd only advanced the lack of playoff appearances.
- 13:42This is a morbid organization. This is one of the worst
- 13:45organizations in professional sports at Eddie Miniature and to
- 13:49get to the Final Four in back-to-back years.
- 13:51But what could have been though? I mean the KG era back-to-back
- 13:54in the day, but at Marbury nothing happened.
- 13:57No, I know that being Marbury left town.
- 14:01It's a bad organization and you have a guy that's going to get
- 14:05there, you know people. Well, SGA, he's got it.
- 14:07SGA is 3 years older than Anthony Edwards.
- 14:11Well, let's talk about this in three years, if we're still
- 14:13having the same conversation at that point.
- 14:14Because guess what? Three years ago, SGA was not in
- 14:17a Western. No, but SGA, I mean SGA and his
- 14:19his mates aren't going anywhere. I mean this, this roster is
- 14:22going to be intact for a while, one would assume.
- 14:24Well paying and that is not an organization that is going to
- 14:27get up and going to be paying that tax apron either so I'd
- 14:30pump the brakes on that we see windows close they it happens a
- 14:34lot more what is the number now? Well we're going to have a
- 14:36different champion for the ninth or tenth straight season in the
- 14:40NBA. That never happened to the NBA.
- 14:42We back-to-back to back a three peat became a term that Pat
- 14:45Riley's made hundreds of thousands of dollars on that
- 14:48doesn't happen to this league. It does now though because of
- 14:50the salary structure and the way that it's set up.
- 14:52Sustainability is not what it once was.
- 14:55I just the thought out there, SGA, well he is so much better
- 15:00than the Ant he is right now. His team is a whole lot better.
- 15:04Talk to me in three years. That's all I want to say about
- 15:06that. Talk to me in three years.
- 15:08That is a fair comparison. SGA now compared to Ant now is
- 15:12not a fair 1. He wasn't here.
- 15:15His team wasn't even making the playoffs three years.
- 15:16But are you confident that they're going to be able to
- 15:19retool the roster in the Twin Cities?
- 15:21Because this is an old roster in a.
- 15:23Lot of it is and the possibility that Nas isn't going to be there
- 15:26and a couple other pretty major pieces including Julius Randall.
- 15:30I just believe in Anthony Edwards.
- 15:32I believe that this guy is 23 years old after back-to-back
- 15:35Western. Conference, even after what you
- 15:36just saw the last five games, Absolutely still do.
- 15:39I do. I don't as much I wanted to, and
- 15:42I think it was. Maybe it's a product of being
- 15:45forced into believing that this guy is one of the faces of the
- 15:48league and I hope he turns out to be, but he's not there yet.
- 15:52He he's just not. He was he was bad, you know, by
- 15:56his standards. He was bad in the in this in
- 15:58this series. He was he was really good before
- 16:00that when he won. Good game in this series, one
- 16:03good game. We'll see where it goes.
- 16:05I just I don't have the confidence that maybe that you
- 16:09do that they're going to put the right pieces around him.
- 16:12When did they when did they start getting draft picks?
- 16:14Not that that's the be all end. All in that.
- 16:16League by any means, but. And those draft picks are going
- 16:19to be in the 20s. Sure, but at least it's it's
- 16:23something you can, you know, barter if you've got those,
- 16:27they're paying through their nose there.
- 16:28We'll see. We'll see.
- 16:29I hope that this isn't the window that's closing, Right?
- 16:32And I mean, you got Superstar. I think you didn't look like it
- 16:37in this last five games, but I think you do.
- 16:41We'll see where it goes. And hopefully they clean up the
- 16:44SGA in the way the Thunder play because it's unwatchable.
- 16:46It is, but you know what? Maybe that's just an US problem.
- 16:51I don't think so. I don't think we're the only
- 16:53ones complaining about that. No, but I mean, it's not
- 16:55changing anytime soon. I mean, whoever wins this out of
- 16:58the Eastman Cats, questionable. I don't know if that's good or
- 17:00bad for tonight's game. Do you see the Pacers or the
- 17:06Knicks? Should they somehow come back in
- 17:08this series giving them a run? I don't.
- 17:10Know this thing's over? I think it is too.
- 17:12Can they win a couple of games? 2 comes out of the.
- 17:14E 2 at best, I hope. Yeah.
- 17:16And that's a hope. And that's a hope.
- 17:18I mean, Halliburton has been unbelievable as as much as that.
- 17:22We're talking about his triple double and his four steals that
- 17:24he had yesterday and when we maybe kind of glossed over.
- 17:27No turnover, no turnovers. My God, all of the that that
- 17:32stat line and then you just get to that big goose egg and your
- 17:35eyes are kind of drawn to the total points and the total
- 17:37assist and the total rebounds and there's that goose egg under
- 17:40the TO for turnover. It's a phenomenal game.
- 17:43He really was and. How much he handles it?
- 17:45No constant. Yeah, this isn't a center.
- 17:48No, that didn't turn. This guy's got the ball in his
- 17:50hand. And the pace that they play at,
- 17:52the tempo that they play at, and to not turn it over, yeah,
- 17:54that's a great point. How big of a favorite did you
- 17:56say OKC would be? What was it yesterday minus they
- 18:00were -4 something weren't they, 475 right in that range?
- 18:04Well, now that they've officially clinched, is it -500
- 18:06now you? Think, I hope not.
- 18:07That's too. That's that's crazy.
- 18:09That gives me no hope if that's the case, that this series is
- 18:11going to be any good. You know what I did and I
- 18:13continue to keep doing it. I just think you got to swallow
- 18:15hard. Put the Florida Panthers to the
- 18:17OK C Thunder and take your plus money.
- 18:20Can't you hit plus buddy? Anymore you still can, but not
- 18:22much. Like it's like $1.15.
- 18:24The Thunder are -680. Five.
- 18:27Are they that big? To win the NBA championship.
- 18:29Currently at Circus Sports, you can get the Knicks at 20. 8 to 1
- 18:32No thanks. How about the Pacers at plus
- 18:346:15? Nope, Nope, Nope, Nope.
- 18:37Put. So this is circa.
- 18:38Can you? Can you do a multi team prop at
- 18:42circa? Let's see here.
- 18:43Could you put the Panthers with them?
- 18:45I got to login in order to do that.
- 18:47Let me login to make that happen.
- 18:49Mike, give me a moment. I don't think you're getting
- 18:51plus money at 685. I know you are at DraftKings.
- 18:55I know you are. Was that after things?
- 18:57This was this morning. It was this morning.
- 18:59OK, C is -750 at DraftKings. Jeez Louise.
- 19:03All right, so there's NBA. We got that one in the back
- 19:05pocket. Let's jump over to hockey series
- 19:09prices. No Stanley Cup, yes, no
- 19:12Panthers, Oh yeah, they're -118 so yeah, it would be.
- 19:17What would you get plus 1/17? All right, DraftKings is plus
- 19:241/16, so they're they're pretty much even yes on that.
- 19:27But it sure looks as though these are the two champs we will
- 19:30see both have qualified for the respective sports final and away
- 19:34we go from that. How about this kids parlay
- 19:36ticket? What would you do?
- 19:37Let me pull it up and get it in front of me when I do this.
- 19:40So this kid bet $13.13, but he's a kid.
- 19:44All right, sounds like my kind of better.
- 19:45All right, $13. This is what he put together,
- 19:48$13 ticket. Yep, he's got the LA Dodgers to
- 19:51win the World Series last year. Last year.
- 19:53So that's it. He had the New York Liberty to
- 19:56win the WNBA winner. He had the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 20:00Winner. He's got OKC.
- 20:04Winner. And the Edmonton Oilers his $13.
- 20:10DraftKings wants to give him $83,000 right now. 83 grand.
- 20:15If he holds his ticket it pays 270,000 assuming the Oilers win
- 20:21and OKC wins. So AKC is a cinch so I would
- 20:25take that guaranteed payout. 83 grand.
- 20:30Put right now, what are the Oilers to win the series?
- 20:35Take 20 of it. 20 grand of that 83 Put it on the Oilers to win
- 20:40it all right now and call it good.
- 20:42At minimum, you got $63,000 in your back pocket and it can grow
- 20:46even more if what you initially had was there.
- 20:49But if they do do it, you'd be kicking yourself, right?
- 20:52You would, absolutely. I mean, but this just goes to
- 20:54show you A, it's incredibly difficult.
- 20:56This kid caught lightning in a bottle.
- 20:58But it's not like you have to bet hundreds, right?
- 20:59And this kid put $13. I'm looking at his ticket right
- 21:02now, Dodgers, Oilers, Liberty, Eagles, and OK C and DraftKings
- 21:06wants to give him $83,687.00 today.
- 21:10Man, that'd be a nice payout. It would be.
- 21:12We'll take a time out. We'll come back.
- 21:14I will talk to Dane Mosutani. We'll go to the Twin Cities.
- 21:17Talk to Dane next. What do the Timberwolves do from
- 21:19here? Where do they go?
- 21:21Do or do they do anything? Do you?
- 21:23Can you? What do they need?
- 21:27What do they need? What does?
- 21:28What does? Ant need If he's going to take
- 21:29that next step, he needs Randall every night.
- 21:33Well, do they need a real point guard?
- 21:35I mean, do you want him handling the ball as much as he does?
- 21:39Well, because Connelly is, too. Old.
- 21:41He's too old. He's too old.
- 21:43Do you want a a quick pass first point guard?
- 21:48Does that make sense for him? Or are you taking the ball out
- 21:50of his hands too much and you don't want to go that direction?
- 21:53Does it make sense to bring in maybe another two guard kind of
- 21:56shooter? Answer your point.
- 21:58You go that direction and add a guy with some size, some
- 22:01versatility defensively like that 6566 shooting guard and
- 22:05then Ant becomes your point guard.
- 22:07I think somebody in the backcourt though, you start
- 22:08right there. Does D Vincenzo need more
- 22:11minutes on this team? He was so bad though, for so
- 22:14long as stretches he couldn't shoot the ball.
- 22:16He's unplayable when he can't shoot.
- 22:17But but he had pretty good playoff series.
- 22:20Two of the games they needed it. What was he, 5 and 19?
- 22:24I think the first three games of the series, it's not good
- 22:26enough. Or first two, whatever it was,
- 22:29they can't afford that. And a lot of those were open
- 22:31shots. I think they got to get better
- 22:33at that spot. I like him.
- 22:34I don't love him if he's your eighth guy.
- 22:37Now we're cooking. But when he's in your top five,
- 22:40I can't get there with Divincenzo.
- 22:42Do you like Alexander Walker? I do, yeah.
- 22:45That's a piece. That's a piece you got to stay
- 22:46with. Does he need starter minutes
- 22:49next year? Well, you don't go real deep in
- 22:53the playoffs in general anyway. I think he's good in that 28 to
- 22:5632 minute range though. I think that's a good spot on a
- 22:59team that's going to win a championship.
- 23:00Like you don't want to play in 40 minutes.
- 23:02That's not his role. I think the role that he has,
- 23:05how? Old is he?
- 23:0726 maybe something like that. He's 26, you're right.
- 23:10Yep, 26. Nailed that one.
- 23:12All right, take your time out. We'll talk to Dane Mazatani
- 23:15next. We'll also get an update.
- 23:17He was at Vikings practice yesterday.
- 23:18Had a chance to meet with some of the players and coaches
- 23:21following the game. Mazatani next.
- 23:23Miller and Condon, we're on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:30I'm Miller. Condon.
- 23:31Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network, wherever you're
- 23:33listening in the state of Iowa. Thank you for doing so.
- 23:37We will talk to Dane Mazatani. In fact, when we get to him
- 23:40right this very 2nd St. Paul Pioneer Press
- 23:43twincities.com covers the Vikings.
- 23:45That is his primary beat. He comes off the bench was going
- 23:48to say pinch hits, but he comes off the bench cover the T Wolves
- 23:52as he did during the run through the playoffs and he joins us.
- 23:55Dane Trenton Ken, as always, thank you.
- 23:58Didn't obviously the 30 points lost last night was not the way
- 24:03that T Wolves fans wanted it to end, clearly, but they were just
- 24:07overmatched seemingly. Just at the end of the day,
- 24:10maybe just got to take your medicine and, you know, come to
- 24:14the belief that just OK, C is just better than the T Wolves
- 24:17were this year. Is that how most will see it or
- 24:20will they see it that there's just something missing on this
- 24:22team or maybe the maybe both to to an extent?
- 24:27Yeah, I think when you kind of really break it down to the
- 24:31series itself, you look at the the difference in the teams and
- 24:37what kind of showed up on the court, it's kind of hard to deny
- 24:41that one team was better than the other.
- 24:44But then when you really kind of micro analyze each game as a
- 24:48whole, just a couple runs here and there, that did prove to be
- 24:52the difference. Obviously, last night, the run
- 24:55lasted for an entire half that title with, you know, ended up
- 24:59being being something that the wolves got punched and they
- 25:02didn't really show up after that.
- 25:04But I think it's easy to look at a series like this that went
- 25:08five games and say all the wolves are so far away.
- 25:11But I really think they're probably closer then it might
- 25:15seem at the surface. It's just a matter of those
- 25:18little things doing the right things over and over again.
- 25:21And I think when you really look back on this series, it is the
- 25:24little things that made the biggest difference, even though
- 25:28as a whole what was probably looked like the team that was
- 25:31very, very much overmatched. Definitely there were those
- 25:34stretches and defensively what the Thunder do they make it
- 25:37difficult on everybody? Ken asked me earlier interesting
- 25:40question. I want to get your perspective.
- 25:42What does Anthony Edwards need going forward?
- 25:44What kind of running mate, what kind of roster construction?
- 25:48What does he need to hit that apex that I think that he
- 25:51definitely can hit? He has the talent to do it.
- 25:53What needs to be around him? Yeah, I mean, I think first it
- 25:57starts with an Ant and that might be a little unfair because
- 26:02he was still their best player in the series when you look at
- 26:05it as a whole. But he needs, I think
- 26:09fundamentally probably a mid range game getting to his spots.
- 26:12You saw what it does for Shay. I think he might need to figure
- 26:16out a way to to use drawing fouls to his advantage.
- 26:19I know he doesn't like to play that way but that seems to be
- 26:22getting rewarded in the league. I think he needs to get out and
- 26:26transition more and use force in the open floor, not just in the
- 26:31half court. So I think improvements need to
- 26:33come from within him starting off.
- 26:36But what he needs around him, I think he needs Jaden McDaniels
- 26:40to take the next step. We talked to Jaden McDaniels
- 26:42today at at exit interviews. He said he's going to work on
- 26:45his entire offensive game. You know what you're going to
- 26:47get from Jaden on defense. How can he level up offensively
- 26:52to help Ant and be that running mate he needs?
- 26:55I don't think you're going to see them bring in another, you
- 26:59know, two or three guys. I think the team is the team
- 27:02now. Tim Conley might make a trade.
- 27:04We've seen him do that. But I think right now you just
- 27:08look at what the team has in place who needs to take steps
- 27:11forward. Jada McDaniels is the top of
- 27:13that list. He he he stepped up this year.
- 27:16He needs to take another step next year.
- 27:19Same with Nas Reed. I think you saw a lack of
- 27:21consistency from Nas Reed in the playoffs.
- 27:24If they're going to pay him or he has to be a guy that can
- 27:27bring it every single night, I think the pieces are in place.
- 27:30It's easy to react to a series like this and say they just
- 27:34don't have enough, but frankly, with the way the new NBA is
- 27:38trending with the new CBA and how it kind of locks you into
- 27:41your roster pretty quickly, a lot of the growth is going to
- 27:46have to come from within. Luckily, if Ant continues to
- 27:50take steps forward, the Wolves have one of the best players in
- 27:52the league and that's going to make them relevant in the
- 27:55conversation every single year. Yeah, Mcdadge is probably best
- 27:58known in this series for being fed up and just pushing SGA from
- 28:01behind under the ground. What about a guy like Terence
- 28:03Shannon who we watched in the Big 12 and then the Big 10 and
- 28:07and finally got to watch him more so as the playoffs went on?
- 28:11Is this a candidate to take a step forward in a bigger role
- 28:14next year? Dane.
- 28:16Certainly, I think you saw that in the playoffs in the spot
- 28:19minutes that he got. Just the force that he plays
- 28:22with is something that, one, you can't teach, but two, you need
- 28:26in the NBA without defenses are trying to kind of muck up the
- 28:30middle and, you know, close off the paint.
- 28:34Well, you can't really close off the paint against Eric Shannon
- 28:37with the force with which he plays the game.
- 28:40So I think yeah, you're going to see him take on a bigger role
- 28:42next year with Terence Shannon. It's easy to kind of look at him
- 28:46and on a roster and say he's a rookie, how are we going to be
- 28:50ready for him to take a big step forward next year?
- 28:53Then you look at his age, he's played a lot of basketball.
- 28:55He's actually older than Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels.
- 28:58So if they want him to step in and and play a bigger role,
- 29:02well, he's a grown man. He should be ready for that.
- 29:04He's not a 1920 year old kid that needs to kind of grow into
- 29:08his body. As you've seen, he can step up
- 29:11and play right away. Now it's I keep going to keep
- 29:15saying it's about consistency with him too.
- 29:17And I think consistency will come with more minutes, a bigger
- 29:20role. But yeah, I think the playoff
- 29:22experience was big for him, and I think it was kind of a sneak
- 29:25peek at what could be in store for him next year when they're
- 29:29probably relying on him a little bit more.
- 29:31Going back a couple summers ago, the trade of Rudy Gobert, many
- 29:36people including two people sitting here talking right now
- 29:39thought it was maybe 1 of the worst trades in in basketball
- 29:41history. Here we are back-to-back Western
- 29:44Conference finals appearances. How do we look at that trade
- 29:47now? And still to be determined,
- 29:49obviously, but I think it looks a whole lot different than it
- 29:52did a couple summers back. I think they won the trade, I I
- 29:55really do, and I think you can say that right now.
- 29:57Even if they don't win a championship, Rudy has helped
- 30:01establish a culture here. And the thing about Rudy is a
- 30:05lot of his impact on the game is invisible.
- 30:07It's that he exists on the court and defenses play or offenses
- 30:11play differently around him. Now, the struggles of Rudy and
- 30:15the madding part of his game is that sometimes it looks like
- 30:19it's his first time on the court, playing when he's on the
- 30:21offensive end. But I really think with him that
- 30:24that's just kind of the ebbs and flows you have to take the good
- 30:28and the bad because what he brings defensively, it's just
- 30:33something that I think if you know, I know fans right now,
- 30:36they're they're mad at Rudy because we couldn't catch a pass
- 30:39yesterday. Well, the entire team forgot how
- 30:41to dribble and pass and choose at the same time.
- 30:43So it wasn't just Rudy, but if you traded Rudy Gobert, your
- 30:47defense would fall off a Cliff. It already trended backwards
- 30:51last year. I think they regressed
- 30:52defensively as a team and I think some of that comes with
- 30:55just a commitment to that side of the ball.
- 30:57They were the best defensive team in the league last year.
- 31:00I think 6th or 7th this year when you look at defensive net
- 31:03rating, if you were to just trade Rudy Gobert, the defense
- 31:07would fall off a Cliff. So I think with him, he's always
- 31:11going to be someone that's kind of an easy punching bag because
- 31:14when and he struggles, it's very, very obvious, very, very
- 31:18apparent. But I think when you look back
- 31:21on that trade, even now, they could they could never reach in
- 31:27a Western Conference finals again.
- 31:29But I think that's right. It was worth it.
- 31:31Just look at what the Jazz have on the other end.
- 31:33Most of those guys don't play. Most of the picks have already
- 31:36conveyed they they traded Rudy Gobert, who's one of the
- 31:40greatest defenders of all time for a bunch of guys who are no
- 31:43longer on the roster, and Walker Kessler, who they've been
- 31:46looking to trade. So it was a, it was a trade that
- 31:50that made waves at the time. But I think right now, hey,
- 31:54they, they, they won that side. Yeah, Trent and I took the L, no
- 31:57doubt about it and I think we both admit so and have already
- 32:00in the past for those reasons you spelled out.
- 32:03I know that this probably didn't come up with the exit
- 32:05interviews. I know that the media is not
- 32:07clamoring to find out about Luca Garza's club option for next
- 32:12year. What do we know about the former
- 32:14Hawkeye? Guess the the team will have
- 32:16till the end of June. He's making league minimum which
- 32:19is just over $2,000,000. Do you think Garza is a is a
- 32:22wolf next year? Hard to say.
- 32:26I think if he's, I mean he's pretty cheap and like I said,
- 32:31your roster kind of is your roster with the new CBA.
- 32:35So if it's just a $2,000,000 team option, I wouldn't be
- 32:37surprised if they picked it up. He's a guy who has consistently
- 32:42got better every single year he's been with the organization.
- 32:47He's a guy that I think will have limitations that kind of
- 32:51stopped him from being a super impactful rotational player.
- 32:56But I think there are ways that he can impact the game.
- 32:58So wouldn't be surprised if he his team option was picked up
- 33:02and then wouldn't be surprised if he was back on the team next
- 33:05year. We'll see what that means as far
- 33:08as role, yeah, he didn't come up today, but but I think he's a
- 33:11guy that they really like here in Minnesota.
- 33:14Over to the Vikings, OTA is happening and saw a big throng
- 33:18of media there watching listening to JJ McCarthy when he
- 33:21was at the podium. I think yesterday the questions
- 33:24are going to be coming. This what turned out to be
- 33:27basically a red shirt year though for JJ McCarthy.
- 33:30How good could this be for him not having to worry about being
- 33:33on that field that first year? Yes, injury was obviously a big
- 33:36component to that, but just getting that year of just
- 33:38learning, how important is that for now his first year as a
- 33:41starter? I think it's huge and I think
- 33:44there's a world in which JJ McCarthy does not get hurt and
- 33:50he still plays no games because Sam Arnold was that good.
- 33:54Now, obviously if you were saying here's a 21 year old kid,
- 33:59you would not choose for him to have a knee injury.
- 34:02But I think the time kind of watching from afar, seeing Sam
- 34:07Darnold do it without having that pressure and that
- 34:11conversation of when the heck are they going to put JJ
- 34:14McCarthy on the field? I think that he was kind of
- 34:17inherently like not having to deal with that because of the
- 34:24injury probably helped him progress and just really buckle
- 34:27down and and be in the playbook and focus on what he needs to
- 34:30focus on. And I think the most impressive
- 34:33thing with with what JJ McCarthy did is you saw Steph forward
- 34:38last year from rookie mini camp to OTAs to training camp to
- 34:43obviously that pre season game. And he was at a certain point in
- 34:47his progression. And then I see him on the field
- 34:49yesterday and he looks like he's picked up right where he left
- 34:53off. And I think that's a testament
- 34:56to all the work he put in during that time during that quote UN
- 34:59quote red shirt year, like a lot of people are calling it.
- 35:02So I think it was big for him and I think it is something that
- 35:06will help him hit the ground running this year when he is QB
- 35:09one for this team. They haven't officially named
- 35:12him the starter. I don't think they will
- 35:13officially name him the starter, but I'll go ahead and say it on
- 35:17the radio. He is the starting quarterback
- 35:19Viking. I think the year kind of
- 35:21watching and and and look, experiencing the highest of
- 35:25highs and seeing Sam Darnold, who you know, it was a
- 35:29professional quarterback and really, really excel in the
- 35:32system. I think it was all good for JJ
- 35:34McCarthy and I think we'll see. It doesn't mean he's going to
- 35:38win 14 games and throw a 35 touchdown, but I think he has at
- 35:41baseline a very good, good spot. And then I think the Vikings are
- 35:45going to be, you know, looking at at what we saw at JJ
- 35:50McCarthy, I think the Vikings are going to be relevant for a
- 35:52very, very long time with him at the helm.
- 35:54You know what I thought was good yesterday as well because these
- 35:56ones are still voluntary, but Jefferson and Addison apparently
- 35:59were both there and both wanted to be there with the rookie
- 36:02quarterback, which I thought was he, I guess the red shirt rookie
- 36:06quarterback, which I thought was telling as well.
- 36:08Dane. Yeah, I'm actually writing about
- 36:11that today, which is from Justin Jefferson's first perspective.
- 36:14Like he's a guy who he missed OTAs last year because of the
- 36:18contract dispute. I I mean, we would all miss OTAs
- 36:22if we were about to negotiate a super lucrative contract and we
- 36:25didn't want to risk anything. But Justin Jefferson and Jordan
- 36:29Addison both being there huge because it allows JJ McCarthy to
- 36:34continue or start the process of building some chemistry.
- 36:37He, you remember last year in the spring, in the summer, Sam
- 36:41Darnold was getting a majority of the first team reps, which
- 36:44means JJ McCarthy really didn't throw to Justin Jefferson.
- 36:47He didn't really throw to Jordan Addison that often.
- 36:50So now he's getting all of these reps he's getting, you know, the
- 36:53early stages of learning the timing, learning what works,
- 36:56learning what doesn't work. And I think that's just going to
- 36:59be great for everybody involved. So when you look at what, you
- 37:04know, the participation as a whole across the board, I think
- 37:06it speaks to the culture the Vikings are built.
- 37:09I also think OTAs across the league has become, you know,
- 37:14they're not mandatory, but they kind of are like she want to be
- 37:17there. So I'm not surprised that they
- 37:19had such good attendance. But when your stars are the ones
- 37:23showing up, when you're Justin Jefferson's of the world are the
- 37:26ones showing up and putting in the work, that's a pretty good
- 37:30example for everyone else to follow.
- 37:32Yeah, they kind of are voluntarily, but they're kind of
- 37:34not. And if you need an example of
- 37:35that, look what New England and Vrabel was not happy that Diggs
- 37:38was not there to work with Drake May etcetera and rather spend
- 37:41time on a boat. But anyways, good stuff.
- 37:44Hey, Dana, as always, thank you for doing this, for recapping
- 37:48the Wolves season looking ahead and obviously your primary beat,
- 37:51the Vikings. We'll talk to you in the weeks
- 37:53ahead. Dane, thank you again.
- 37:54Appreciate it. Sounds good anytime.
- 37:57Thank you, buddy. Dane Mazatani, St.
- 37:59Paul, Pioneer Press, twincities.com as we check in on
- 38:02the Wolves and the Vikings. Time out, come back, finish up.
- 38:04Hour number one, Miller and Condon.
- 38:06Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller and Condon.
- 38:09Final couple of minutes, hour number one.
- 38:11Hour #2 we'll talk some Hawks, we'll talk some clones.
- 38:14Trump will make some picks. Circus sports sponsor those.
- 38:18The College Football Hall of Fame is lowering, lowering its
- 38:21standards, not significantly, to allow for the inclusion of Mike
- 38:27Leach into the Hall of Fame for coaches.
- 38:29The bar the the threshold was 60% winning percentage.
- 38:34His was 59 and a half .595. So they're going to lower it to
- 38:40that to make him eligible. Would they do it if he was
- 38:44living? No.
- 38:45Should they do it when he's? Gone.
- 38:47Yes, he revolutionized offensive football as we know it.
- 38:51But if he was living, he still would have had that as part of
- 38:53his resume. He would have, but we don't know
- 38:55how that resume would have ended and that resume well.
- 38:57It would have ended in some obscure talk college town.
- 39:00We know that. And it could Allman, Starkville
- 39:02and Lubbock. And it could have been back in
- 39:04Mount Pleasant. I mean, it could have been, you
- 39:06can see that guy coach in NAA IA football somewhere.
- 39:09That's just he beat to his own drum.
- 39:12He died in his press conferences were one-of-a-kind.
- 39:14What did he have? Spears for something in his
- 39:16office A. Pirate stuff.
- 39:17Pirate stuff. That's big big fan of.
- 39:20Pirates. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:22Yeah, and that's the schwa. He's he's one of one.
- 39:25No. He is I, I don't want to sound
- 39:27like I don't like the guy. I do.
- 39:28I thought he was phenomenal, I think.
- 39:30Miller hates him. That's that's what I took away
- 39:31today, hatred of Mike Leach. No, it's just that.
- 39:36With their circumstances that are out of control, change the
- 39:39circumstances. So what if will they change them
- 39:41back If if Ference, let's say if it doesn't go well for Ference
- 39:44and he doesn't meet that threshold?
- 39:46Yeah. Will they change it for Kirk
- 39:47once he passes? No, because Kirk Ference, as
- 39:50good of a football coach as he is, he didn't change the game.
- 39:53He didn't. He wasn't that kind of.
- 39:57There wasn't something special that needed to happen like that.
- 40:01Kurt's been with us for a long time.
- 40:03But. He does not.
- 40:04He is not an iconic figure. Gotcha.
- 40:07Like Mike Leach. So if I asked you like Tan
- 40:09Patrick, says Trent, what did you learn today?
- 40:12I learned that you don't like Mike.
- 40:13Leach, You don't like Mike Leach?
- 40:14That's. Couldn't be further from the
- 40:16truth. Hour 2 Coming up next Miller and
- 40:18Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
