- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host Anna Mcgevern for November 7th.
- 0:12Today is National Hug a Bear Day, celebrating those faithful
- 0:16companions that have comforted children and adults alike for
- 0:20over a century. The teddy bear was born in 19
- 0:23O2, named after President Theodore Teddy Roosevelt after
- 0:28he refused to shoot a captured bear on a hunting trip.
- 0:31A political cartoon captured the moment and a toy maker created a
- 0:35stuffed bear in his honor. The teddy bear became an instant
- 0:39sensation. What makes teddy bears special
- 0:42isn't just their softness, it's their constancy.
- 0:47They never age, they never judge, they never leave.
- 0:50They're there for the scrape knees, the first days of school,
- 0:54the lonely nights. And somehow many of them survive
- 0:58well into our adult years. Writer Pam Brown perfectly
- 1:02captured their importance when she once said, in a world gone
- 1:09bad, a bear, even a bear standing on its head, is a
- 1:14comforting, uncomplicated, dependable hunk of sanity.
- 1:19Brown understands something essential.
- 1:21We all need something to hold onto when life gets complicated.
- 1:26Teddy bears don't require anything from us.
- 1:28They don't need to be fed, walked or entertained.
- 1:32They simply exist to be there, offering quiet companionship
- 1:36without demands or conditions. In an increasingly complex world
- 1:40full of uncertainty, a teddy bear represents simplicity
- 1:44itself. Pick it up and it's exactly what
- 1:47it was yesterday and will be tomorrow.
- 1:50Soft, safe, familiar. That's not childish, that's
- 1:56wisdom. She may have been talking about
- 1:59teddy bears, but in my neighborhood we have plenty of
- 2:03actual bears, black bears galore, and we see them all the
- 2:09time walking down the street and in the trails by her house.
- 2:13And my wife took the dog for a walk a couple of nights ago,
- 2:17just after dark, because she needed to get a couple thousand
- 2:21more steps. Make 10,000 and on the sidewalk
- 2:25in front of her, there was a bear walking towards her.
- 2:29She didn't think it was comforting at all, but maybe if
- 2:33the bear was standing on his head, she would have thought
- 2:36that was funny. Anyway, today, hug a teddy bear.
- 2:43If you still have your childhood bear, pull it out of storage.
- 2:46If your kids have one, respect its importance.
- 2:50If you don't have one, maybe it's time to get one.
- 2:54Comfort has no age limit because Pam Brown was right.
- 2:58In a complicated world, sometimes the most sophisticated
- 3:02thing we can do is hold on to something simple.
- 3:06That's going to do it. For today, I'm Andrew McGivern,
- 3:08signing off for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:14Then Pod Time fame Pod station with another daily quote.
