- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. Welcome, friends.
- 0:03My name is Tracie Foster, and I am your host for
- 0:07today's episode. And I am so excited about this
- 0:11episode. As you are maybe scrolling all the way
- 0:15through your TikToks, you are seeing weighted
- 0:17vests. And so in this episode, we are calling
- 0:20it weighted vest. What's weighing you down? And
- 0:24so, you know, I love fitness. I love health.
- 0:27I love exercising. I love cardio. I love lifting
- 0:30weights. I don't know if there's an exercise
- 0:34that I don't like. There's some that I don't
- 0:38love, but I will do. And so my weighted vest
- 0:42walks in the mornings and it was just a great
- 0:46reminder for me. I have a 20 pound vest and I
- 0:50was thinking about it like, two miles into it
- 0:53and I was like, man, 20 pounds, 20 pounds. I
- 0:57would have to put eight of these suckers on to
- 1:01mimic the weight that I have lost in my weight
- 1:04loss journey. And so my weight, uh, being my
- 1:08heaviest to the weight that I am now, I would
- 1:11have to put on eight 20 pound weighted vest and
- 1:16walk. And that got to me to be thinking like,
- 1:20Man, he says that my burden is like, give me
- 1:23your burden. And so that's what sparked this
- 1:26podcast. And so I want to talk about something
- 1:30that hits home. What's weighing you down? Now,
- 1:34I'm not talking about your gym bag or your laundry
- 1:37that you've been putting off. I'm talking about
- 1:40those invisible weights, the ones on your heart,
- 1:43the ones on your mind, the ones on your soul.
- 1:49call today's episode weighted vest and what is
- 1:53weighing you down. And so if you have ever seen
- 1:56someone training for with a weighted vest, you
- 1:58know, it's not easy. The purpose of the vest
- 2:00is to add that resistance to build that strength
- 2:03and build that endurance. But in life, we often
- 2:08carry weighted vest, not to build strength, but
- 2:12because we haven't taken the time to lay the
- 2:14weight down. And that's what we're going to unpack
- 2:17today. And so invisible weights. And so let's
- 2:22start with the visual. So picture someone jogging
- 2:25down the street, but instead of their workout
- 2:28clothes, they've got a 50 pound vest on, they're
- 2:31sweating, they're straining, maybe even just
- 2:34struggling to breathe, but no one sees the weight.
- 2:38And that's how so many of us are going around
- 2:41through spiritually, emotionally. We're walking
- 2:44around smiling. Doing our job, raising kids,
- 2:49attending church, showing up for others while
- 2:53carrying shame, anxiety, fear, bitterness, perfectionism.
- 3:05We have Hebrews 12 .1 that says, Therefore, since
- 3:09we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witness,
- 3:11let us throw off everything that hinders. and
- 3:16the sin that so easily entangles, and let us
- 3:20run with perseverance the race marked out for
- 3:23us. It says, throw off everything that hinders.
- 3:30That doesn't say just sin. It says everything
- 3:35that hinders. So maybe the thing that's weighing
- 3:39you down isn't even sin. Maybe it's a story,
- 3:43a situation. A struggle? And so whatever it is,
- 3:50what is your best made of? For some of us, it's
- 3:55guilt, unforgiveness, comparison, control, fear,
- 4:04insecurity. And we didn't say, I'm fine. But
- 4:11inside, we're dragging a weight around that no
- 4:14one else sees. And so guilt, you did something
- 4:19years ago and you haven't forgiven yourself and
- 4:22you're thinking there's no way that he's going
- 4:24to forgive me for that. I did the ultimate sin.
- 4:27I did this. And then you have unforgiveness towards
- 4:33somebody who hurt you deeply that they don't
- 4:36deserve forgiveness. Comparison. You constantly
- 4:41measure your worth by someone else's success.
- 4:47Control. You've exhausted trying to manage everything.
- 4:52You're just exhausted. You can't balance everything,
- 4:56but you have to have that control. Fear. Fear
- 5:01of failing. Rejection. What's next? I cannot
- 5:07deal with another thing. Insecurity. Feeling
- 5:13like you're never going to be good enough. And
- 5:19so let me be real with you. I carried a ton of
- 5:22weight before. Physically, spiritually, emotionally,
- 5:27insecure for years. Every room I walked into,
- 5:30I questioned if I even belonged there. It wasn't
- 5:33until I named the weight and brought it to God
- 5:36and found my worth in him that I could finally
- 5:41breathe. And let me tell you, freedom feels a
- 5:46whole lot lighter. The burden that you weigh
- 5:50and that you have to carry with you every day
- 5:53whenever you feel like you are not good enough,
- 5:55that you are empty and that you're searching
- 5:57for love, you're searching for that right person,
- 5:59you're searching for all these things. And it's
- 6:02so heavy and you're just exhausted and you can't
- 6:06even get out of bed some days. There's some days
- 6:08that you just, you can't even open your eyes
- 6:10and you just lay in bed because the weight of
- 6:12the world is so heavy. But we have Psalms 55,
- 6:1722. That says, cast your cares on the Lord and
- 6:21he will sustain you. He will never let the righteous
- 6:24be shaken. But that casting requires action.
- 6:31You just can't talk about the weight. You've
- 6:35got to take it off. And so why we get used to
- 6:40carrying it. And so have you ever worn something
- 6:44uncomfortable for such a long time that you stopped
- 6:47noticing how comfortable it was? Maybe it's a
- 6:50new pair of shoes that rubbed your heels raw
- 6:51and it hurt for a little while because a blister
- 6:56was forming and you kept walking and kept walking
- 6:58and then like, well, it's not that bad. And then
- 7:03eventually you're like, your foot goes numb and
- 7:05then you get home and you take off your heel
- 7:07and then you have this hugest blister and then
- 7:09the burning and just that God awful pain just
- 7:13happens. That's the same thing that happens whenever
- 7:17we have emotional weight. We normalize dysfunction.
- 7:22We say things like, that's just how I am. You
- 7:27know, I'll deal with that later. It's not a big
- 7:32deal, but it is a big deal when it's stopping
- 7:37you from living with peace, purpose, and joy.
- 7:44It is the freedom in Galatians 5 .1 that says,
- 7:49it is freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand
- 7:53firm and then do not let yourselves be burdened
- 7:57again by the yoke of slavery. Jesus didn't die
- 8:01on the cross so that you could live chained to
- 8:04fear, shame, or anything else. He didn't set
- 8:10us free so that you could pick up another burden
- 8:13and call it normal. But here's the kicker. Oftentimes,
- 8:20wearing a weighted vest makes you look stronger,
- 8:27you think. We think that if we keep going, no
- 8:31one will see us struggling. But strength is not
- 8:37in hiding your struggle. Strength is surrender.
- 8:44And so taking off your vest. How do we get this
- 8:48vest off of us? Unclip it and throw it away.
- 8:52Let's get practical. If you're thinking, okay,
- 8:54Tracy. I'm tired of carrying this vest. Now what?
- 8:59Here's some three steps to drop the weight. So
- 9:05one, identify the weight. Be honest with yourself
- 9:08and God. Write it down if you have to. Pray.
- 9:13Ask God to reveal what is weighing me down. And
- 9:17guess what? He'll answer. Two, take it to him.
- 9:23take it to God. Matthew 11, 28 through 30 says,
- 9:26come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened,
- 9:30and I will give you rest for my yoke is easy
- 9:33and my burden is light. This isn't just a nice
- 9:37verse. It is a daily invitation. Trade your burden
- 9:41for his peace. And so, as you know, I'm a huge,
- 9:48huge advocate for writing it down. And so in
- 9:51my line of work, I don't have really anybody
- 9:54to talk to. I can't come home and talk to my
- 9:57family about my day. I have restrictions and
- 10:00regulations that I can't talk about really anything
- 10:03to anybody. And so I carry 120 people's burdens,
- 10:09150 people's burdens every week. But for me,
- 10:13I get to unload that and unpack that daily. I
- 10:18get to take that to God and pray over other people's
- 10:21burdens. And I get to take that to him and say,
- 10:24what do we do with this? You are the ultimate
- 10:26physician. You are the one that is giving us
- 10:29wisdom and guidance and making our steps and
- 10:32our path straight. What do I do with this? And
- 10:34I get to lay that down. And so I'm refreshed
- 10:37and renewed every day before I get to go do another
- 10:42day. And I get to then unload my weight with
- 10:46him. on the daily, all throughout the day, because
- 10:49he says my burden is light and I do heavy lifting
- 10:53and I do enough cardio. I don't need other people's
- 10:56stuff weighing me down. And so I give it to the
- 11:00guy that has the answers. And three, take one
- 11:05step of obedience. One step, not a mile, not
- 11:11a quarter mile, just one step. And so maybe that
- 11:14one step. It's going to be really hard because
- 11:18maybe it's forgiving somebody. Maybe it's calling
- 11:23and getting counseling. Maybe it's about having
- 11:27a really hard conversation that you know the
- 11:29person needs, but they're not ready to receive
- 11:33it. And you don't know how to approach it, but
- 11:35you know that that conversation has to be had.
- 11:38Maybe it's a simple rest, like for real rest,
- 11:42not scrolling rest. like Sabbath rest, like a
- 11:45legit rest. And so friend, whatever you've never
- 11:52meant to carry in that vest forever, you were
- 11:54never meant to carry it. God wants you light,
- 11:57free, joyful, and bold. He wants you to run your
- 12:02race, not weighed down, but wide open to his
- 12:07grace. And here's the truth. You can't be full
- 12:12of purpose when you're full of pressure. You
- 12:18can't follow Jesus when your shoulders are all
- 12:21hunched over with a load he never asked you to
- 12:25carry. So today, take off the weighted vest.
- 12:31You don't need it anymore. And so I would love
- 12:36to pray for you. Dear Heavenly Father, thank
- 12:39you so much for today. Thank you so much for
- 12:40these listeners. Thank you that the burdens that
- 12:44we are carrying, that we give it to you, that
- 12:48you are the burden lifter, that you are the chain
- 12:50breaker, that you are the Prince of Peace for
- 12:52everyone listening who feels like life is just
- 12:55too heavy. I pray that you meet them where they're
- 12:58at. Help them identify what is weighing them
- 13:01down and give them the courage to release it
- 13:03to you. Remind them that in you, there is freedom.
- 13:07There is rest. There is joy. There is love. There
- 13:09is peace. Thank you so much for being our strength
- 13:12whenever we are weak. In Jesus' name, I pray.
- 13:16Amen. Thank you so much for spending this time
- 13:20with us today on fostering faith. And if this

- 13:40Jesus. We love you guys. Have an amazing week.
