- 1:27Football League. Kayla and Carl discuss her journey to pro football, her vision

- 1:40let's get to the conversation. Hollo, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carly

- 2:13Well, I gotta, I gotta actually, yeah, see today I am
- 2:19all messed up because we've been running around, we've been trying to get this
- 2:23show set and and so give me help me with this okay, in your
- 2:30introduction, In your introduction, help me with because we're gonna talk about something
- 2:35that I did not know, Okay, and I'm wondering if people knew and
- 2:43if and again because this will probably get some airtime here in Minneapolis. So
- 2:46there's some people who know you. Sure you know, there's people who know
- 2:51you and know the game that we're gonna talk about today. And I don't
- 2:55want to. I don't want to ruin that. Tell me give me your
- 3:00full name, and give me your sport, your favorite sport, and don't
- 3:07elaborate in the sport. Just give me your favorite sport. Okay. So
- 3:12my name is Kayla Ross. I grew up here in Minnesota, and we
- 3:15met before. Yes, we met actually like a little sort of meet and
- 3:19greet situation a long time ago, a couple of years ago. And right
- 3:23now, I'm a school teacher. I teach pe and health. I love
- 3:28my job. I've been around sports my whole life, mainly basketball. I
- 3:32have to see that my favorite sport is football. Okay. Now you ended
- 3:40up we started talking about doing this show, and I'm trying to figure out
- 3:46why I did not know that there was professional football for women. I do
- 3:54I remember way back in the day when it first came out. Yep,
- 4:00have not heard anything else remotely about it going on or even how big it
- 4:06is here in Minnesota. How do I how do I not know? How
- 4:10do people not know that there is professional football women's professional football and no one
- 4:18knows about it? A lot of people don't know that. You're yeah,
- 4:21You're not alone in that. I think there are a few reasons when when
- 4:25we talk about women's sport in general, right the media coverage, and I
- 4:29think you talked about that in your last podcast. You had media coverage.
- 4:33We don't typically get the same coverage as you know men's sports do, and
- 4:40so we struggle in that way, things like funding, resources, sponsorships and
- 4:46those for an organization to run right, money is an important piece. And
- 4:54however, I will say over the past five years, specifically on my team,
- 5:00which is the Minnesota Vixen, we've seen a big growth in media coverage
- 5:06and in funding. We actually are seeing more of that. Does that have
- 5:11anything to do with the way the WNBA is taken off or is that just
- 5:15because of the sport itself? And that's the thing is when we talk about
- 5:18women's football, not just women's sport, but women's football, I think such
- 5:24because it's such a male dominated sport, right, Like you don't when you
- 5:28think of football, you don't think of women, right or not binary athletes.
- 5:31You think of men. So I think just because the societal norms around
- 5:35it too. It's like unheard of to hear and when you hear about it,
- 5:39you're like, wait, what do you mean pro? There's a pro
- 5:41level, right, because there's actually different We actually have different divisions within the
- 5:46WSA three, right, Yeah, so D three, D two and then
- 5:48pro is our D one. We call it pro and so you know,
- 5:53it's growing and growing and growing. Actually, the Minnesota Vixen have been around
- 5:58since nineteen ninety nine. We were the first professional or women's tackle football team
- 6:03in the nation. Minnesota was and not again, I'm how long ago was
- 6:10that, because I remember that being talked about and I don't know, I
- 6:15don't like it. Like once that I heard it, I never heard any
- 6:19follow up about it. Yeah, I think it. You know, I
- 6:25was talking with her owner about this a couple of days ago when when it
- 6:29first came to be, there was only like what twenty five people trying out
- 6:32for this team fifty people trying out, you know, the level of skill
- 6:35or play you know, maybe wasn't as diverse as you see now because now
- 6:40twenty five, twenty six years later, we're getting one hundred and fifty women
- 6:45trying out for the team, right, And so the actually the level of
- 6:47skill, there's more selection things like that. Who're actually seeing a more competitive
- 6:53game too. The game itself is evolving for women, it's in it and
- 6:56again it's still developing. I think that's another piece to point out, is
- 7:00that women's football specifically is still developing. You know, when you talk about
- 7:04men's football, young boys have a chance to put on the pads, put
- 7:09on the helmet and play at what's six, seven, eight years old,
- 7:12right, and they're on an all boys team. That's actually our youth football
- 7:15starts at five. Who yeah, So I make the case that's probably too
- 7:19young. We started at seven. I think that's probably the right age.
- 7:26But again to your point, you're starting at such a young age and unless
- 7:30you play on a boy's team at that level, which I don't know how
- 7:36many moms or dads are gonna want that to happen, right, And so
- 7:42the point being like young girls are necessarily having that opportunity to start that young
- 7:46to you know, develop those skills till then they're at my age twenty five.
- 7:50Who do you when you say that, are you saying are you saying
- 7:54it because the league or not? Or parents are just not? I mean
- 7:59just I mean it could be both. I mean, like you said,
- 8:01parents, do they want their young girls going into playing tackle football at seven
- 8:05years old? Right? Or is it that there's not the there's no societal
- 8:11norm around it, there's no what team are they going to? You know,
- 8:13when I when I was in middle school, I told my parents,
- 8:16say I want to play some football, and you know, my dad was
- 8:18like, hey, yeah, let's go. And he's like, bull,
- 8:20yeah, we got to put you on a boys team, right, There's
- 8:20no girls team for me. So I did play I think a year or
- 8:24two in middle school with an all boys team, and then you know,
- 8:31I ended up dropping out of that because people, you know, and girls
- 8:33and boys grow differently and so you have to part ways with that. But
- 8:37what I would love is there to be a somewhere some time where it's a
- 8:46norm for there to be women playing football. And it's not this I've never
- 8:50heard of this before well, and is it to the point you made just
- 8:54a second ago which kind of changed the direction for you of getting out of
- 9:01it. You know, there's there's the whole locker room issues, all of
- 9:07that kind of stuff, But does it really that doesn't seem to be a
- 9:11major problem to me in all reality. I mean, there's there's boys and
- 9:16girls locker rooms almost everywhere you go. There's not just men's because everybody's playing
- 9:20either a middle school or a high school, so there's two locker rooms,
- 9:26and so there's I don't see that being an issue, but I think we
- 9:31use that as an issue to kind of hinder the sport the females into the
- 9:39sport. Am I Am I wrong on that judgment. I see what you're
- 9:43saying. I see what you're saying. I think though women or girls playing
- 9:48with other women girls, I think is really important to have that space and
- 9:52an option. And I actually, you know I see that with the development
- 9:56of play right now, it's an Olympic sports. There's some word around about
- 10:01it. It's high schools are making it a sport that you can opt into
- 10:07playing. And they have it for girls right all girls flag football team.
- 10:11And you've seen amazing athletes going out there and playing flag. I wish that
- 10:13same norm kind of went along with women's tackle football, and I get some
- 10:20like hesitation around it, but I'm telling you, I'm playing with other women
- 10:26and non binary athletes in the league, and they're incredible athletes, right,
- 10:33And you've used the word athlete like a couple of times now. One of
- 10:39the things that when I think about football, and I think when people when
- 10:43when the general public thinks about football and women, yes, the first thing
- 10:48that I think comes out of everybody's mouth is the physicality. Yes, And
- 10:54can women have that physicality? Well? You know, I mean you're starting
- 11:01to look just with the with the w n b A. You you you
- 11:03see that that game is more physical and and and the actions that players are
- 11:09taking against other players are uniquely to them. That doesn't happen in the NBA
- 11:16because you know, that's that's that's gonna bring the benches out on the court
- 11:20and everybody's going to blows. But for the women, they they're having this
- 11:26physicality in basketball, which kind of shows that Okay, they they can be
- 11:33physical. And I think I think that is usually like the hindrance of most
- 11:39men is like that the women can't be and I can and and I'm going
- 11:43to practice today if if if the weather holds up, I'm gonna go to
- 11:48practice because I want. I want to see it, you know, because
- 11:52I've never I've never, ever ever ever seen it. So I can't wait.
- 11:58I'm excited to see it. Yes, it's I'll tell you. Uh,
- 12:03they're physical. I play wide receiver, so I am getting tackle right
- 12:09and I can tell you they hit. There's there's women on my team that
- 12:13are just I mean, I don't know. I think they're hitting harder than
- 12:16the boys out there. I started got like, I'm like, I do
- 12:20not want to be in their line of sight. It's and you know what
- 12:24people ask, you know, why why do why do women want to play
- 12:26football in the first place? Right? Like where's that? And then I
- 12:30challenged, you know, as a man, why do you why do you
- 12:33play football? Why did you play football? It was just it was the
- 12:37sport that my dad he played the old sandlot leagues, and and me and
- 12:43him share that that passion of the game. And he was because you know,
- 12:50sandlight, no helmets, no shoulder pads, it's just you know,
- 12:52just out there just tackling. So he was an extremely physical, tough kind
- 12:58of guy, and and he he he wanted me to play, but I
- 13:07wanted to play. You know, we were both Cleveland Browns fans. And
- 13:11there was something to me about the physicality of it that my dad loved and
- 13:18he kind of passed that on to me. And so I loved the idea
- 13:22of hitting somebody, like I just there was something about it. There was
- 13:28something you know, I ran track, So if you if you run one
- 13:33hundred meters and you win it, there's something about that feeling that you get.
- 13:39Yes, And to me, hitting was exactly the same way like if
- 13:43I if I hit somebody and I hit him hard, and it's like and
- 13:46the fans are like who like? To me, like, there's there's nothing
- 13:50better than that. And my dad was always about you know, and this
- 13:56is this is before you know, all the brains stuff and all this kind
- 14:01of stuff before the and again all the protection is rightly in place to try
- 14:05to protect the players. But back in the day, my dad would tell
- 14:09me, like, you know, run through his neck, like you know,
- 14:13you ought to hit him, or you should have hit him, and
- 14:16you should have hit him like in his neck, and you can come out
- 14:18the back of the outside of him, you know, And so I'm hearing
- 14:22that, and then I know that if I don't do that, we're going
- 14:26to have another conversation. Why didn't you hit him? So for me,
- 14:31I didn't know anything but the physicality of the game and then getting to coming
- 14:37here in Minnesota and then becoming a corner back. Typically corners don't necessarily supposedly
- 14:43aren't supposed to be that physical, you know, or the rap on them
- 14:48wasn't that so much because you're not doing a lot of tapping, But there
- 14:54were, you know, I was on special teams and I had an opportunity
- 14:56to make some really really big hits that you know, that I'm proud of,
- 15:01and I just and it was just part of who I was. It
- 15:03was like just the makeup of what my dad instilled in me. And it's
- 15:07not even my personality because I don't come, I don't I'm not like,
- 15:11I don't consider myself a tough guy walking around or anything like that. But
- 15:16on football field, it's a total different thing. And so so so it
- 15:22was it was embedded in me with my dad. Where So to my point,
- 15:28the reason I asked that is because it's the same for women. It's
- 15:31people in general. Why do people like football? They like that? Maybe
- 15:35they like that side on defense where they like to hit right, they like
- 15:37to be aggressive like that. For me, like, I'm not on defense.
- 15:43I'm not a big like, oh I'm gonna take her out. I'm
- 15:45not built like that, Okay, but I really enjoy like the mental side
- 15:50of the sport connects with the physical. I think football is like the most
- 15:56intricate intriguing sports there is. Honestly, when you think about in the scheme
- 16:00of like sports, I think it's just that that's where I feel like the
- 16:06mental side of it. Okay. So I can hear the passion in in
- 16:11in your conversation and talking about where did that like when and how did that
- 16:17get into you? Honestly, I think my dad too. I think,
- 16:19yeah, he's a huge Vikings fan, loved to be unlike somebody else whose
- 16:25house has Steeler names Stiller Nation. We won't talk too much about that,
- 16:30but yeah, I mean I grew up watching football. I'm really a big
- 16:34Steelers fan, NFL fan in general. And I think when I was young,
- 16:38and I said in middle school, I just wanted to try I'm like
- 16:41I don't want to be a quarterback, you know, I just want to
- 16:42try this out. And uh just I'm competitive, like in everything, like
- 16:48board games, I'm talking anything, I'm competitive at it. So football for
- 16:52me is like the highest level of like a mental thing sport you could play,
- 16:59especially being core because I play quarterback too, and I think it's just
- 17:03you don't get that in like other sports, Like I played basketball my whole
- 17:07life. It's a very it's a very fun, uh you know, pretty
- 17:11physical kind of mental game where it's back and forth, it's a quick going.
- 17:14Football is just like to the next level. I don't know how to
- 17:18explain that other than the the the mental toughness it takes to play football,
- 17:25and a lot of people they don't they don't know that, right, you
- 17:29know, and they've never if you've never played football, and you've never because
- 17:33it takes you to get hit, and then how you get hit and what
- 17:37you think about after that hit can determine whether or not you're going to be
- 17:41a player, because that first hit that you're going to get hit and and
- 17:48you're like laying there and like, oh my gosh, I think I'm they
- 17:51got dead. Right, If you get up and assume and stay in that
- 17:56space. Football is probably not going to be for you. But if you
- 17:59get up and think to yourself, Okay, he got me, I'm gonna
- 18:03get him back, you know. And again I hate I don't want to
- 18:07sound like I'm saying stuff like a dirty part of the game, but it's
- 18:11just to to the point of the mindset. You have to be in a
- 18:15mindset to where you know you're gonna get hit. You as a receiver,
- 18:21you know that there's gonna be a time you're gonna go out try to kiss
- 18:23the ball. Somebody's gonna go light you up. Now, the question is
- 18:29is what happens when you get up? What is in the mind when you
- 18:33get up? And because you like, you have to go past it,
- 18:37yes, And I think to be good, to be great, I think
- 18:42you have to be able to get past that at each level. And I
- 18:45think it's I think it gets worse at each level. And so I think
- 18:49in order for you to get to somebody, I think somebody somebody had said
- 18:53something on on on Facebook about getting to the you know, getting to the
- 19:00next level basically what it takes. And I and I and I really don't
- 19:08know if if that's you know, even if you type it out and it's
- 19:14right, you don't have any idea, you know what I'm saying, Like
- 19:18like you like for a female saying you know that might even let's say even
- 19:23may have your built and say, oh, I could probably play receiver in
- 19:26that lead. That's easy to say. It is. That's easy to say,
- 19:30but it is, it is. It is different. You know,
- 19:33we're talking about what the weather might be and you're talking about, well,
- 19:37we're gonna probably have practice one way or the other. We're gonna have,
- 19:40you know. And some folks like not stereotyping, but some women don't want
- 19:45to They would not want to be in the rank. Some gys don't want
- 19:48to be out in the rain, you know. And I'm like, if
- 19:52it's rain and it rain, we're gonna play. We're gonna play in the
- 19:56rain. We're gonna practice, right right, best player, best player that
- 20:03you've that you faced thus far as a receiver, Who's who's the best player,
- 20:11and that your worst hit somebody who's already have you have you had that
- 20:17big hit already? Honestly, I've had them in practice more than I haven't.
- 20:21Okay, Okay, because you know the I would say, and this.
- 20:26I can't remember her name right now, and it's number seven on the
- 20:32Saint Louis Slam. Okay, I get it to give her a shout out
- 20:34here. I played against your last weekend. I played against her earlier this
- 20:38year. She's probably the most She's a very tough defender because she's technical,
- 20:45she's aggressive. Oh she can hit, but she's it's like a mind game
- 20:49when we go out there and I see I'm facing her, I've got to
- 20:53really really think through how I'm gonna run this route. She's inside shage,
- 20:57she's turned here, is playing cover three, you know whatever, and she's
- 21:00fast and quick, aggressive. She's playing the game for I don't even know
- 21:03how long. She's well respected in the league. And it's for me to
- 21:08be able to go up against somebody. I'm my second year in this league,
- 21:11right, So I played a little bit of backup quarterback last year,
- 21:15didn't do much playing time. This year, I'm playing wide receiver. I'm
- 21:19starting at wide receiver, which it can be intimidating going up against a girl
- 21:23who's been in the league for fifteen years, right or something like that,
- 21:26you know, so I learn every time I'm out there though, and by
- 21:33the end, you know, towards the middle of the game, I'm figuring
- 21:36it out a little bit, right, Like I'm starting to know what works
- 21:38and what does kind of game planning, scouting a little bit right after a
- 21:42couple you know, a few of those reps, you start to know.
- 21:45And that's why I think is so great about about this is like all of
- 21:51these women are are developing. We all are kind of starting from from ground
- 21:56up. And I actually I have a teammate who is retired. She was
- 22:00Her name was Red. I'll give a shout out to Red real quick.
- 22:03Red was on my team from the very first year they started, so she
- 22:07was on the team for twenty five years. She's in her fifties. She
- 22:10plays like she's twenty five though, I mean she she's a D lineman,
- 22:15and it was incredible to be on a team with somebody who who is that
- 22:18much of a legend for women's football, right and now she coaches on her
- 22:22team, she's a D line coach. And I just think being in this
- 22:29atmosphere with these women who either are new to the sport been playing it for
- 22:33years, we're all learning. We're all like supporting each other. It's kind
- 22:37of weird because like we'll play each other and we're like, I don't know,
- 22:40like I was exchanging some words with the corner of the other day at
- 22:42custin or something. You know, we're like fight and then at the end
- 22:45of the game we all both teams circle up. You know. Actually it's
- 22:48a it's a kind of like a little bonding moment where we all kind of
- 22:52like the NFL players do at the game, right, and it's just like,
- 22:55hey, we're here to like lift each other up, make each other
- 22:56better. Is there has there been a moment that like you kind of would
- 23:06yourself like you like you like, did I really do that? Or did
- 23:11that really just happen? You know, like like something that you were like,
- 23:15even though you like felt comfortable about knowing that you could play, what
- 23:22was that aha moment that you were like, okay, because like I said,
- 23:26you've only been in now for two years, and so something has to
- 23:30something somewhere there's confirmation that I can do this right because you're right in that.
- 23:37And sometimes it's like because it's women's football and size developed you you come
- 23:41in you're like, am I built for this? Am I you know,
- 23:44am I athletic enough for this? Those those thoughts do come through for sure.
- 23:48And then when you you're like that, what's that proving moment? I
- 23:52think being seeing my teammates who are incredible and even being somewhere near that realm
- 24:00of good, like I can keep up with them or those dbs in practice,
- 24:03I'm like, oh, I'm kind of keeping up with these. Like
- 24:06number seven on the slam, I was keeping up with her, and I'm
- 24:07like, maybe you know I can do this. And then I think,
- 24:11just a play this year. It was a first play of the game.
- 24:15Is that the video you're sitting, Yeah, I think so. It was
- 24:19forty five hour pass from our quarterback Aaron Kelly. First play of the game.
- 24:22I just had to go route and it was double covered and I just
- 24:26I slipped my one hand in there, hoping around the dB and I caught
- 24:32it and I turned and I ran it in the end. So I was
- 24:33like, did I just do that? Like it was kind of like an
- 24:37instinctual thing, and it's just it's just something that you know, I have
- 24:41such a passion for sports and football and then being able to play at this
- 24:45level, it's it's a blessing seriously. You know we'll get back to Let's

- 25:52is let's talk with Carl Lee. Now back to the conversation between Carl Lee
- 25:57and Kayla Ross, a professional football play from the Minnesota Vixen. You spoke
- 26:02about the love of the game, you know, just just the just the
- 26:06passion for it, and and it got you into playing as a kid.
- 26:12Yeah, and now here you are as an adult. Yeah, I mean
- 26:18in golf in it, right, and it is being at this pro level
- 26:23again, being that that highest level you can play, which all the divisions
- 26:26are great, and learning it every The goal is to get to Division one,
- 26:30right, right, because there's only I think there's fourteen teams in this
- 26:33division, so it's the pretty most competitive fourteen teams you can be on in
- 26:38the States. And it's a huge it's a huge commitment. Right, So,
- 26:42like all of us, none of us are getting paid, right,
- 26:45we actually have to pay one thousand. Some teams pay over one thousand dollars
- 26:49per player, plus our equipment. My pads were eight hundred dollars, my
- 26:52helmet was four hundred dollars. When we fly into away games, we got
- 26:55to pay for that. We got to pay for our lodging where we're staying
- 26:56at the hotel, I mean there's so much money energy practicing three to four
- 27:03days a week, and that's you know, we got full time jobs,
- 27:07Like I'm going to teaching at school and then I change quick through my braid
- 27:11and going football, right, Like it's a it's a huge commitment. And
- 27:15people who who don't love it and aren't doing it, Yeah, yeah,
- 27:21yeah, that makes perfectly good sense because like that's tough. I mean,
- 27:26that's you. You're doing something because you because you love it, right and
- 27:32and and no one's no one's really rewarding you for it, and and and
- 27:36my question, my question is is why why not? Why? Why is
- 27:41this Why? Why is this particular football league not being recognized? Why is
- 27:51it not? Why? And and and I'll i'll I'll make an assumption,
- 27:56and then I'll hear what you got to say. I think, I think
- 27:59because people just see it as a as a as a man's that's that's the
- 28:03man's game, that's where that's where men show their their real toughness in in
- 28:10football. And there can't be a place for a female to be in it
- 28:17and doing it like us. So we don't, we don't, we don't
- 28:22want to pay attention to it. And see, and I'm like thinking,
- 28:25like when you when you first told me that, I was like, oh,
- 28:30I gotta get you on. I don't know how well we got to
- 28:33make it work because I was like, because I feel I have a whole
- 28:37new respect for women's sports now, and it's unfortunately it's late, you know,
- 28:44but the w n B A that that's just a and and again the
- 28:49physicality of it, I can see it and I can appreciate it, you
- 28:53know, strategy, the technical like all of that. And so now here
- 29:00I'm on that high and all of a sudden, you're telling me, oh,
- 29:06I'm playing professional football, right, and I'm like, what we gotta
- 29:10have We gotta have this conversation. Yeah, And so I and I think
- 29:14and for me, like, I feel like the public has to be more
- 29:19aware of it so that you you ladies are able to get paid and because
- 29:27there's there's no way, there's no way. And the number of teams shows
- 29:33interest, so you can't deny that there's not interest, right, sixty plus
- 29:36teams, Yeah, in just this WFA league that we're in, right,
- 29:38there's other leagues out there too, see, Yeah, so it's clear.
- 29:42I think I just think that we we no one's no one has seen it,
- 29:47no one has said anything about it. There's no there's no national television
- 29:51piece tool so there is. So that's the thing I, like I said
- 29:53in the beginning, over the past five years, there's been a growth more
- 29:56growth in it. It's actually like our championship which we're just starting playoffs this
- 30:02surfirst practice today, we got a bye week and then we play our first
- 30:06round of playoffs. So the championship game is always in Canton, Ohio,
- 30:11and it is on ESPN two, which we just got that like two years
- 30:15ago or something that that game is on ESPN two Women's Sports Sports Network is
- 30:21showing it. And then there's some local channels, but really like those which
- 30:26are great and like social media and things like that, but we need more
- 30:32things like this right where you're like, I want to have you on this
- 30:36podcast, right, because that's that's I think the best way to spread awareness
- 30:41about it and just having different platforms and channels. Going back to your point
- 30:48about you know, people saying, well, it's a men's sport and women,
- 30:52you know, can they really be playing and it's really physical? My
- 30:56point to that would be, come watch a game. I actually so I
- 31:02love Dave's Hot Chicken. Dave's Hot Chicken, you should sponsor me. I
- 31:06go to Dave's Hot Chicken a lot, and there's this there's this guy there.
- 31:10His name is Chuck. And I was just eating there one day and
- 31:12I come back, Oh, hey, there's Chuck. He's always so nice
- 31:15to me. And he sees me wearing this shirt one day and he's,
- 31:18oh, Vixen, what's that. I said, you know, professional women's
- 31:21football team. He's like, no, way, yeah, we got there
- 31:22right here. No, and he's like, you know, I'm a coach.
- 31:26He's he's well established in the sport of football. I think he played
- 31:30some semi pro. He's like, you know what, I'd love to come
- 31:33watch you sometime. I'm like, okay. So he comes to our one
- 31:36of our games, our home games this year, and he was blown away.
- 31:40He went to our owner of our team, actually our last home game,
- 31:42and he's like, I was just he said. He's like, not
- 31:45trying to be rude, but he's like, I wasn't expecting it to be
- 31:48at that level. Like he said, the way that he was even watching
- 31:52like pursuit angles right and things like that, Like he was like, whoa
- 31:56just taken aback by it because I think people do have that, like the
- 32:00narrative that it's not going to be competitive or it's not going to just because
- 32:02it's not going to be as good as the boys, and why would we
- 32:06watch that? And we have the NFL things like that, and I think
- 32:08I would encourage people to watch a game or to look at different teams.
- 32:14I think so, So I'm trying to figure out like what in West So
- 32:21in West Virginia we do obviously we do not have a team. So Ohio
- 32:27does Ohio have a team? Or I know that there's a game there.
- 32:30There's so many I don't think, so don't quote me on it off the
- 32:37look, but we haven't played this so like we have like you know,
- 32:38our our divisions, just like you know FC North and stuff like that.
- 32:43So it's kind of like that. So we play like the Saint Louis Slam
- 32:45a lot, We play Nebraska a lot. You got teams like right now,
- 32:50I would say the top. So the Vixen are number five. We
- 32:52were number two last last week, so we dropped out a five right now.
- 32:58But Saint Louis Slam is number one. Okay, Boston has been just
- 33:02a powerhouse. They've won the championship like through three some three or four or
- 33:07five years in a row. Now Boston's doing incredible. I do believe,
- 33:10and I don't want to misquote this, but I do believe the Patriots have
- 33:15some funding with that Boston women's team. I know they tweet about them,
- 33:21like the Patriots team will tweet about them when Boston's gonna go play. So
- 33:23they have some partnership there, which which I would love if the Vikings were
- 33:28somebody to do that for the Vixen. But they're successful, Pittsburgh Passion.
- 33:32Pittsburgh's like one of the top three teams right now. So I know a
- 33:37lot about those teams as we play them. Is there any are some of
- 33:42those more quote successful teams and the teams that specifically the teams that you named,
- 33:49do they have affiliations with the with the teams in their area? See,
- 33:54I don't know. I don't I don't like follow them on like you
- 33:59know, Instagram to see what they what they get. I heard something about
- 34:01the Patriots. I think I saw the Patriots tweeting about Boston Renegade, so
- 34:05I knew that there was some sort of partnership there. I think they actually
- 34:08use their facilities maybe sometimes again don't quote me on that. I had heard
- 34:13that, but the Vikings this year actually let us use their training facility for
- 34:17a couple of practices, which is really nice. Like we got to be
- 34:21in there, you know, we're justin Jefferson's reading and you know, like
- 34:23so it's that's that was super helpful for us, and I wish there was
- 34:30some more partnership in that because we're not trying to take a we're not trying
- 34:36to take NFL fans or we're not trying to you know, knock on the
- 34:39NFL or men's sport. We love that, right and we want I think
- 34:45it's just yeah, I think to me, it's it's an existence alongside,
- 34:50yes, yes, just just to have the ability to be beside it,
- 34:53to say, the NFL, you know, and the women's professional So is
- 34:59it Women's Professional Football League? Yeah? Does each league have it? Yeah?
- 35:05So the WFA is the Women's Ball Alliance, Yes, WFA, that's
- 35:09our that's our league. But yeah, there's I think there's some other ones
- 35:15out there. So like each league plays their you know, different divisions and
- 35:17stuff. But the WFA is owned by I believe a woman that plays for
- 35:22the Cali war So California. We've played them before too. They live there
- 35:27in California. They own the league, and they've been I think doing a
- 35:30really good job on trying to promote and lift up the league so that more
- 35:35people are knowing about it. Our players are players able to get sponsors?
- 35:39Like you know, like yes, so who are those Are those specific players
- 35:50just considered the best players in the league. Is it just based on notoriety
- 35:55on the team or it's kind of it's kind of the players job to get
- 36:00the sponsors. Like you have to pay one thousand dollars every year to play,
- 36:02right, you can pay that on the pocket. You can do that,
- 36:05you can do monthly payments, or you can go get sponsors to help
- 36:07pay you pay that for you. So, like you have to pay one
- 36:12thousand dollars every season, every season just to play. That's not including like
- 36:16anything else. And so like my first year, I had like a meditation
- 36:21app company that sponsored me. They gave me some money and they were like,
- 36:25hey, if you promote our business, like we'll give you some money
- 36:29for it. And so you could, but I'm in charge of making those
- 36:31deals on my own, right, like my my president, my coach doesn't
- 36:35go and do that for me. Now there are our team does get sponsorships
- 36:38as like a team thing, right, so we have like different businesses sponsor
- 36:45the team as a whole. So okay, so the sponsors who sponsor the
- 36:51team itself. I don't want to be controversial here, but like why wouldn't
- 36:59that be something used to buy equipment so that you have that equipment every every
- 37:06year, so that it saves you all as the player is necessarily having to
- 37:14you know, suit up yourself, you know, get sponsors for equipment yourself.
- 37:19I get that, Like, you know, at first that was kind
- 37:22of my questions too, like where does you know how do we get funded?
- 37:25How does this work? And I think really it's just that the money
- 37:30we use from the sponsorships, we're using it for like facilities to practice and
- 37:35because they're they're they're charging you yes, so we can't eat. We don't
- 37:39haven't have enough money for everybody to have to get them gear right like we
- 37:44don't. We don't have nearly enough funding for that. So we are in
- 37:47charge of going and getting our own stuff. So the even so even at
- 37:52the having the growth of the team kind of almost kind of works against you
- 37:59a little bit when it comes to money needed. Yes, as a whole
- 38:05for the program, Yes, there's a lot that goes into it. And
- 38:07I think I didn't understand that at first two. But yeah, we there's
- 38:12lots of fundraising, Like we have to do mandatory fundraising, like every year.
- 38:15I'm pretty sure every girl, every person in the WFA, every team
- 38:19you're you're doing fundraising. Like I just go, like work security shifts at
- 38:22like a baseball game or something like you you have to do those things so
- 38:27that those places give your team money so that you can have practice facilities.
- 38:30Like it's a grind. It's a grind to try to get these this organization,
- 38:37you know, keep keeping it going. All right, So let's go.
- 38:40I want to switch gears and I want to I want to I want
- 38:45to talk about like game on the field. Yeah, like stuff. Okay,
- 38:52Like so what is that? What is your personality? How different is
- 39:00your personality here? Yeah? And uh, the young lady that I spoke
- 39:06to on the phone, yea, and the lady that's or the football player
- 39:10on the field. Yeah, the difference. Ask my teammates. I think
- 39:14it's I think I'm definitely uh a goofy gal. So I'd like to take
- 39:22life not too serious. But it's hard because I'm like a big time like
- 39:25jokester. I'm my coach probably gets so annoyed by me. But I'm also
- 39:30like so competitive at the same time, So I'm like super serious like in
- 39:35a lot of the moments, but I'm also just trashed. All yeah,
- 39:40you know, that's try. You know, sometimes I know my place though
- 39:45I'm like, Okay, I'm not like I'm not the best girl on my
- 39:47team by any means or and I'm not somebody in the league that people are
- 39:52oh kay La Ross is like no, But I can be competitive and I
- 39:58make I think I keep people on their toes for sure. I think that
- 40:01playing receiver this year, people are not expecting what I can bring. Okay,
- 40:07So you said something that that kind of struck a struck a little nerve
- 40:14in my stomach, in my chest maybe even like you're you're okay, and
- 40:21I get it. I'm not the I was not the best corner you know
- 40:25in the league when I played, and and maybe you know, there may
- 40:30be some folks may not think I maybe it was the best corner you know,
- 40:36on the field at one particular time. Sure. But one of the
- 40:43things, one of the things that I learned growing up my dad was if
- 40:52you say it, if you say it, there's a there's a there's there's
- 40:58something to say who you are and what you are and true story. I
- 41:05was talking to I was talking to a friend of mine at one point and
- 41:07he and we were talking about football, and he said that, he said,
- 41:14well, you know, Carl, you were You're okay. And I
- 41:20was like, no, no, I wasn't just okay, and and and
- 41:24the way that he said it, and in the in the context of the
- 41:27conversation, it was like I felt like he took he was taking something from
- 41:31me. And I'm like, I'm like and and and I don't. I
- 41:37try my best not to be arrogant. I try my best not to be
- 41:39you know. I don't really talk about my career, but I would never
- 41:45I would never downplay how good I was, because I do know how good
- 41:52I was, not because of the accolades, but the fact that I got
- 41:57there. There's a whole lot of people who can't get there. You if
- 42:00you're not there, then you have no judgment. People who say this stuff
- 42:06on Facebook and all this kind of stuff, and you didn't play. I
- 42:08get it that you're a fan. And when you say, oh gosh,
- 42:13this guy is so terrible, how's he terrible? He's playing the league,
- 42:19he's in the league, and and you know his name enough to talk bad
- 42:22about him or try to make the case he's not very good compared to what
- 42:29compared to Randy Mass as a receiver. There's a whole lot of people who
- 42:34say, well, I'm not Randy Mass, But that doesn't mean, you
- 42:37know, I don't know if if I was a Daryl Green, okay from
- 42:43the Redskins, you know, hall of Famer, I'm not in the Hall
- 42:45of Fame, will not go in the Hall of Fame. And I'm comfortable
- 42:49saying that and knowing it. But but there's no way to play professional a
- 42:58professional sport and not be good or even even great. And you can't.
- 43:04And and to be honest, if you're playing, you're in a very small
- 43:08window of people. That's why I say, I feel blessed. But yeah,
- 43:15but but you're but there can't be a time where you actually make the
- 43:20case that you know, I'm okay, no, no, The people who
- 43:23are not playing are okay, you're actually playing. And I saw you catch
- 43:30a touchdown a bomb, okay, So that tells me that this is somebody
- 43:36who is really good. And and and and I and I interrupt you there
- 43:43because I did, because I believe most folks are afraid to say or to
- 43:50or to stand up for how good they are. I refuse to do that.
- 43:54If you know, like I said, I know, I know where
- 43:58I'm at. I know how good of a professional athlete I was. I
- 44:02know how good of a professional athlete that I was for the Minnesota Vikings.
- 44:07If you vote me in as the fifty greatest, I'm not mad, and
- 44:12I'm the corner. I'm the corner that you put on there. Then I
- 44:15know that in this in this D one professional league, I see you catch
- 44:22a touchdown, you're not just okay, you know you and you and you
- 44:28can't say that and and and to me, I think when you when you
- 44:34when you stop thinking that way and start thinking upwards, I think that changes
- 44:39the dynamics of who and what you want to be. Yeah, and I
- 44:44think you know, so I challenge you to not to say when you think
- 44:52about yourself, you have to think and specifically we're talking sports, specifically,
- 44:58when you start talking about your football judge fairly, and I feel like that's
- 45:04my thing, is like I'm my biggest critic. I'm my biggest critic.
- 45:09I am always like and especially paying. But that's the thing too, is
- 45:14I'm also my biggest fan. You should see me out there. I practice,
- 45:16I'll be like flexing on them and all the but then as soon as
- 45:20I mess up, I'm like, bench me, take me out. I
- 45:22mean, I have. It's so back and forth. I think it's so
- 45:28I try to keep myself in the middle and say, like, you know,
- 45:30I'm not the best player on my team, and I play with amazing
- 45:34female athletes that I and it's hard to say to you're best person on the
- 45:37team and I haven't seen you yet, you know, But you're on your
- 45:44your starter, You're a starter yeah for the most part. Yes, and
- 45:49you're making plays. Yeah. And it doesn't it doesn't matter who's the best,
- 45:52right, It doesn't even matter to me. No, it doesn't really
- 45:55matter who's the best. But it's what you think. To me, I
- 45:59think to what you think about who you are, because if I'm on that,
- 46:04if I'm on the if I'm on the football field. I can't care
- 46:07what receiver's coming out that I'm getting ready to come. Yep, if it's
- 46:12Jerry Rice, it's no different than Joe Blow, you know. If it's
- 46:15Stirling Sharp, it's Joe Blow. I know that's not true, you know.
- 46:21But if I if I'm like, oh my gosh, here comes Rice,
- 46:23Oh what am I going to do? I don't have that. I
- 46:28don't have that ability to do that because in my mind, I'm thinking,
- 46:34I'm I'm built for this, you know I can. I am, I
- 46:37am built for this, and I'm this is what I had dreamed all my
- 46:40life. I wanted to be in the NFL on Sunday, and I know
- 46:45the guys that are great that are gonna be there. I want to prove
- 46:50that I can be there, I can get there, and I can be
- 46:52as good as them. So it's hard for me to hear saying okay,
- 46:58I'm okay, you know, and I don't. And I think that you
- 47:00personally, privately, you have to you you you have to. You have
- 47:07to go after greatness absolutely, you know, and you have to and you
- 47:10have to you have to think, Okay, am I my step away?
- 47:14Am I five steps away? Or where where am I in that? Because
- 47:19if you're if you're just a step away, you're gonna work harder, you
- 47:25know what I'm saying, Because you because you can see it. And then
- 47:28so and so, which brings me to this question. Can you can you
- 47:32see yourself great? Can you can you like you? Okay? Yes?
- 47:37And what what what would you? What do you think that you are lacking?
- 47:44Not necessarily skilled, but work ethic, work out you know what?
- 47:49What what? What do you feel is the is the thing that gets you
- 47:52to the next level. It's got to be the training. It's got to
- 47:53the amount of time that I spend outside of practice, outside of the season
- 47:58working because that's something that that's the time we get better. And life is
- 48:04so because I say, you know, we have our full time jobs things
- 48:08like that, but you know what, if you wanted to, you would
- 48:13And that's how I feel about myself. You know, if I really want
- 48:15to be great, then I got to do the things. And that's the
- 48:19thing is like I learn more about play and wide receiver and I'm like,
- 48:22oh, I want to do that. I see a video, I'll learn
- 48:24that. So then I got to go do it and I know I can
- 48:28do it. I know, I know how athletic I am, and I
- 48:32know what I can do, and if I would take that next step,
- 48:37I can be up there with the grades I and have you have you just
- 48:43not made that step or just haven't had time or feels like us, I
- 48:49mean essentially, and it get me justified. I mean, that's that's justified.
- 48:52I mean, there's probably a ton of things you have to do around
- 48:54here, and you're, like you said, you're a teacher, so you
- 48:57got papers, the grain and all that kind of stuff. So there's justifiable
- 49:01reasons. But if you can, if you honestly can say to yourself,
- 49:07actually, if I'm this good with what I do, put in what could
- 49:13I do? If I put in just a little bit more? Can I
- 49:17find that a little bit more? Yeah, to add to my skill set?
- 49:25Right, because like anybody can go out there, not anybody, but
- 49:34lots of people go out there and run a route. It's not about just
- 49:37the route though, it's like the release and then if you have like rocker
- 49:39steps, or you're adding things into and you're reading the defense and there's so
- 49:45many pieces to it that if I really put my time and energy into learning
- 49:50these skill things, I think I think I'm good to go, Like I
- 49:55really want to be that good. I really do. And I watch my
- 50:00teammates who are that good, and I'm like, damn, like, oh
- 50:05my god. And I see, you know, some of my teammates be
- 50:06working out twice a day outside of practice. I'm like, wow, you
- 50:08guys are laing. They just enjoy you know, working out and things like
- 50:12that. But you can see how much time and effort people put into it,
- 50:15and you can see it on the field. But see, I can
- 50:17feel it. I can feel it from you that like you like you love
- 50:22it, like yeah, and I want to be a coach one day.
- 50:25That's like my goal is to be a coach for for the Vixen. But
- 50:30but I'd like to you know, get all American Verse and like you know,
- 50:35win the championship and all that, because yeah, I can. I
- 50:37can. I can feel that. I can feel that energy off of you.
- 50:40I can feel that excitement about it. And even just when we were
- 50:44talking about trying to get it set up, like you were like you know,
- 50:46you were you you were excited about having the opportunity. But see that
- 50:52comes well, you know, and and you you have that opportunity to to
- 51:00step into a space of greatness. But it does take it does take those
- 51:08extra that extra time to work out, and the loan can only get you
- 51:15so far, only so far, and so height wise, as a receiver,
- 51:22are you one of the tallest. I'm on like what five eight,
- 51:25five nine, I'm not that tall. That's pretty tall still for probably,
- 51:30Yeah, I think I'm pretty lanky. You can tell in difference with even
- 51:36with receivers on my team and other teams. Yeah, I'm pretty lanky.
- 51:37I think my wingspan is like ridiculous. It's but I would say, like
- 51:44I'm not built, like muscular, very muscular, right, So I think
- 51:49sometimes people see me and like I got her because it's like even with blocking,
- 51:53I keep up with the blocking too. Actually that's one of my favorite
- 51:55parts of being wide receiver. Now can you welcome? Can you cut?
- 52:00Like? Can you do the cup of No? No, it's illegal.
- 52:04But my speed, I think is a really big asset for me. You
- 52:10said you ran track in your bio. You said you ran track, but
- 52:14you had that No, I didn't retract, No, no, no,
- 52:16you're thinking of my coach O Connor did like d one and I don't even
- 52:22know, but I did basketball. I think that's where the wingspan thing comes
- 52:25in with the blocking I do. I play really basketball lesque when I'm out
- 52:30there. Actually, even my footwork and my releases in my routes, you
- 52:35can see it. I've always thought that basketball I played basketball was horrible.
- 52:40I was I was like, was that horrible? But our team was great.
- 52:45We ended up like we lost one game in our season and we ended
- 52:49up losing the playoffs my senior year. But I was the guy who was
- 52:52coming the other player. And to me, basketball is the number one sport
- 52:59that can help you naturally with footwork. Yeah, a lot of people try
- 53:02to work on footwork outside of it, but man, playing basketball is truly
- 53:08where you become naturally gifted in footwork if you can master it. Yes,
- 53:15and you can tell, like people on my team who played basketball, and
- 53:19some of them at like D one levels. I mean, we have really
- 53:22good collegiate athletes on our team. You can tell that they play basketball the
- 53:25way that they move, the way we step even. Yeah, you know
- 53:29we have one of our DB's Sam Barber, played basketball. Our quarterback Aaron
- 53:35Kelly played basketball. The one you can tell. It's just the footwork piece
- 53:38and how we move our bodies. And it's actually, like I said,
- 53:42it's it's helpful to this sport because they kind of cross over a little bit
- 53:47when it comes to that. Hmm. Well, one of one of the
- 53:52things that I can't wait for it And I don't know how much what time
- 53:58we got, No, I got practice soon. Yeah, I know.
- 54:00I can't wait because I want to go to I'm going to go to the
- 54:02practice, yeah, and I want to. I want to kind of see
- 54:08I want to see what you look like out on the court. And you're
- 54:14all to judge me stretch, I'm gonna. I'm gonna. I'm gonna first
- 54:21of all, like I said, like I don't have any reason to judge
- 54:24you, but I want to just like I want to see women playing football.
- 54:30No, I'm going to today. It's gonna be good. I think
- 54:34you'll be surprised. I think you're going to be taken away by like the
- 54:37amount of passion, the discipline that our team has, the togetherness, the
- 54:43family, and and then the concepts specifically on offense. I mean, if
- 54:47you're following my group around, you're going to see like offense defense usually splits
- 54:51up in practice just the schemes and the everything that goes into it. I
- 54:55think you're going to be like, wow, this is like this is actually
- 55:02fairly what's that word? I'm looking like intens or well coordinated. I think
- 55:10I think you'll be surprised. I'm hoping to be truthful, like I am
- 55:15hoping to be surprised. I want and maybe I'm already I don't even know.
- 55:22Maybe if I if I'm not going to be surprised, I'm already thinking
- 55:25like I'm going to enjoy it, you know. And again, like I'll
- 55:30be honest, I don't really watch a lot of football anymore, like you
- 55:32know, it just it's just different, and so you know, so I
- 55:36don't really I don't. Yeah, the game is different, and you know,
- 55:39and nothing taken away from the skill set or talent from the guys that
- 55:43that playing in the NFL NBA. I don't watch any of the NBA.
- 55:47But but you know, again, my interest has been into the w n
- 55:52B A and so now well players are just starting, so you're actually entering
- 55:59it a great time because and you all played when's your first game? So
- 56:02we're not this weekend, but the next I think it's twenty ninth we played
- 56:07Denver, so Denver flies here, we play them at home, and if
- 56:10we win there, we go to the second round. Whoever wins that go
- 56:13is a championship, and the championship is it'll be where Canton, Ohio.
- 56:19They want you. My owner already said she wants you to come. That's
- 56:22close to me. Okay, so that's not far from me. She said,
- 56:24she wants to give you a whole vip all that stuff. Yeah,
- 56:29that's gonna be hard to pass up. I knew we coul Yeah, I
- 56:32knew. Yeah for sure. If I can, I can make sure that
- 56:38you shoot me a text and let me know that day because I don't want
- 56:43to forget it and I want to make sure I blocked that out, So
- 56:45put on the calendar. Yeah, so I can put it on the calendar.
- 56:47Hopefully we're going to be playing in it. That's ideal. That would
- 56:51be. I don't know if i'd go if you all weren't playing. Yeah,
- 56:58because I mean it's got a personal now, like like like I want
- 57:01to I have to see you play at some point, so you know that's
- 57:06you know, so somewhere I'm going to see you playing in the game.
- 57:10I'll get a chance to see you in practice today, but live stream.
- 57:14They got a live stream, so like that's that's the thing is, like
- 57:16it's not always like on like you're saying, like the networks we have it's
- 57:20called town Square TV. They're the ones that film our team, but every
- 57:23other team has a different than they do, like Facebook lives or something like
- 57:25that. So it's not really like wow, I want to come, Like
- 57:30I want to come, I want to come and be at the game.
- 57:35This year, Oh, we had like eight hundred fans. I was like,
- 57:38which is a lot for us. Yeah, we had eight hundred fans
- 57:40at our last home game. And you and you guys play where now you
- 57:44were? It changes different times every year, so like this year we've been
- 57:49playing any Dinah. Dinah is like the high school field, but like for
- 57:52playoffs now we had to like they're not we don't have they don't have room
- 57:55for us, so we have to find quickly find a new stadium to play
- 57:59at. So like I think we're playing and like Saint Paul now in two
- 58:01weeks at that at a high school field there. So like our president does
- 58:06a lot of coordination of like where we're going to be practicing and playing and
- 58:08it changes and and I just don't understand, like why it's not like like
- 58:15why it's not either like somewhere biking affiliated, University of M affiliated. I
- 58:22don't understand, like why that's not happening. Well, you think because I
- 58:25think it would. I think it would excite other young ladies, oh to
- 58:30be interested in it. For sure. We have a lot of young girl
- 58:32fans that like and and you look at w NBA, like the links are
- 58:37at the Timberwolves, like the target, right, you look at the p
- 58:39WHL, which I don't know if you knew about. The professional women Hockey
- 58:44just came to be about this year. The Minnesota team one and all,
- 58:46they took the cup and they play at the Excel or the wild Play.
- 58:50So then it would only make sense that the Vixen would play with the Vikings,
- 58:53right, But that for some reason, and I don't know all the
- 58:55backstory on that. I'm sure they've tried, but I don't know why that
- 58:59is in the thing. Well all right, well, ladies and gentlemen,
- 59:07I just wanna I just want everybody to understand that, and hopefully we can
- 59:15find a place to watch these games, support these ladies and for sure when
- 59:23I get back. When I when I get back with my co host,
- 59:27Hollis Lewis, I'm gonna let him know that there was a quarterback. There
- 59:30was a lady quarterback, probably better than he was when I coached them at
- 59:36West Virginia State. We'll be back with you as soon as we can get
- 59:39soon as I can get home, and I'll talk to you later. Carl,
