- 0:00Speaker 1: Well this so I uh once a year we try
- 0:03Speaker 1: to go to this little place in Escalante. It's now
- 0:09Speaker 1: so you know where Escalant is, right. You go from
- 0:12Speaker 1: you know, you get to Torri where Capitol Ride Escalante
- 0:17Speaker 1: and uh then you then you drive to Boulder and
- 0:20Speaker 1: up Overhell's Backbone and you drop down uh in to uh.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Well outside of Escalanti is where we we are. And
- 0:29Speaker 1: it's just past the Calf Creek Recreation area. And there's
- 0:34Speaker 1: a thing there's a sign there that says Escalante Escalante
- 0:38Speaker 1: River trailhead, I think it says. And you turn and
- 0:41Speaker 1: you go out, go drive down this dirt road through
- 0:44Speaker 1: the trees, and then you have to drive like the
- 0:46Speaker 1: road goes over the you have to actually drive through
- 0:50Speaker 1: the river and you know how it's it's shallow enough
- 0:53Speaker 1: that you can drive through the river up to the
- 0:54Speaker 1: other side. And you get up there and there's uh
- 0:58Speaker 1: this little house and it is just beautiful. Uh shaw
- 1:03Speaker 1: the front door of it X ninety six dot com
- 1:05Speaker 1: slash live. So that's kind of the front door of
- 1:07Speaker 1: the house. And behind it there you can see the
- 1:12Speaker 1: gigantic rock cliffs that that really butt up right against
- 1:16Speaker 1: the back of the house and we stay there usually
- 1:20Speaker 1: three nights, maybe.
- 1:21Speaker 2: This same house you've stayed, Yeah, and we'll go there.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Well, like I think we made it's it's almost always booked.
- 1:28Speaker 1: It's like constantly booked as an Airbnb. And it's and
- 1:33Speaker 1: there's there's nobody out there. You you don't see any
- 1:37Speaker 1: other people. And sitting on the front porch, you're looking
- 1:40Speaker 1: out over this just this vast meadow and then cottonwood
- 1:45Speaker 1: trees and then huge red cliffs over on the other
- 1:47Speaker 1: side of you. And uh, and it's just so quiet
- 1:51Speaker 1: and peaceful. You know. We take our supplies and we cook,
- 1:55Speaker 1: cook meals. There has a nice kitchen and it has
- 1:58Speaker 1: a couple of bedrooms. Now, the next picture show This
- 2:00Speaker 1: is the picture window. So once you're inside the house,
- 2:03Speaker 1: that's the picture window looking and that that red rock
- 2:08Speaker 1: cliff there that looks very close.
- 2:10Speaker 2: It is, I mean, it's like you're right there.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's it's ten feet away. And uh, it's
- 2:17Speaker 1: just a gorgeous little house. And so we cook meals
- 2:21Speaker 1: and we have a nice time and there's no TV,
- 2:26Speaker 1: no uh, no internet. You know, there is internet. There's
- 2:33Speaker 1: I think there's a CD player there where we never
- 2:36Speaker 1: mess with that, and it's one there's one big bedroom
- 2:40Speaker 1: and then a smaller bedroom, so it's it's good for
- 2:43Speaker 1: four people tops probably And although people could see that,
- 2:47Speaker 1: so that window seat there, people could actually sleep on that.
- 2:51Speaker 1: It's huge. Yeah, it's huge. You could one person could
- 2:54Speaker 1: sleep at one end, in the other at the other end.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And it's and then we'll usually go out to dinner.
- 3:01Speaker 1: We'll drive back up to Boulder, which is about twenty
- 3:04Speaker 1: minutes away, and go to the Hell's Backbone Grill.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Did you have the lemony clock?
- 3:09Speaker 1: My kid? Did?
- 3:10Speaker 2: I love the lemony clock?
- 3:12Speaker 1: My kid has the lemony clock. I had the the
- 3:16Speaker 1: They had a pork chop special which was just delicious
- 3:20Speaker 1: with little bits of a low tech corn on top
- 3:23Speaker 1: of it and mashed potatoes or whipped potatoes, I guess,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and just a delicious sauce. Hell's Backbone Grill just a
- 3:31Speaker 1: wonderful play And my god, that place was hopping'. We
- 3:35Speaker 1: had a reservation for six fifteen and there were I
- 3:38Speaker 1: bet there were forty people standing around waiting to get in.
- 3:42Speaker 1: You just really terrific. So we usually eat dinner there,
- 3:47Speaker 1: but then we make nice meals down at the house
- 3:49Speaker 1: and I very seldom see any wildlife there. But this trip,
- 3:53Speaker 1: I saw wildlife. And I hope we got the video here.
- 3:57Speaker 1: This is the wildlife I saw. That's the that's my sink.
- 4:01Speaker 1: That's the sink in the house. And that's a video
- 4:03Speaker 1: of a scorpion in the sink that I took. I
- 4:06Speaker 1: don't know why it's flashing like that. That's kind of weird,
- 4:09Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 4:09Speaker 2: It's probably our processor.
- 4:11Speaker 1: And I he looks a lot bigger. He looks a
- 4:17Speaker 1: lot bigger in this video than he really was. He was.
- 4:20Speaker 1: He was a tiny little.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Little stinger that's curled up there and get you.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Yeah, And I I washed him down the drain, you feel,
- 4:33Speaker 1: And I felt bad about that. I felt terrible about it.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Might have survived.
- 4:38Speaker 1: You were him, I could you know, I could have
- 4:41Speaker 1: picked him up and with a piece of paper.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And you know, my rule is inside is my house,
- 4:48Speaker 2: outside is your house.
- 4:51Speaker 1: But but then I told my kid I I washed him,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and and they were very upset with me.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Did you say, well then, why didn't you you come from?
- 4:59Speaker 1: This is this is my k this is my kid.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Oh there's a black widow in my bed down there? Yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 1: And I and I said, oh, what and and uh
- 5:08Speaker 1: and they said, I'm gonna I'll get it and take
- 5:10Speaker 1: it outside and they and they did. They captured it.
- 5:14Speaker 2: In class black widow and a scorpion.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'd never seen I'd never seen either. The
- 5:19Speaker 1: only thing I've ever seen in that house is mice.
- 5:22Speaker 2: It's got everything.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Yeah, well now I it's got it. Yeah, we've got
- 5:32Speaker 1: we got a check and see we've got scorpions, we
- 5:34Speaker 1: got mince. Uh.
- 5:35Speaker 2: You'll usually discourage you from going back there.
- 5:40Speaker 1: No, why would well?
- 5:42Speaker 2: Because they can hurt yours.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I've been, I've been widow.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Can put you, that can put you in the hospital.
- 5:48Speaker 1: You know, Gena, you should never you should not. Could
- 5:51Speaker 1: we set it Gina up a microphone at home? You
- 5:54Speaker 1: should never leave your house. It's a tempter, so the
- 6:00Speaker 1: so you you'll usually just see a mouse once, maybe
- 6:05Speaker 1: one mouse a trip who not realize, like where everybody's
- 6:09Speaker 1: being quiet, and the mouse will not realize and will
- 6:11Speaker 1: come out from behind something and then sort of stop
- 6:14Speaker 1: and look at you and go, oh my good, and
- 6:16Speaker 1: then run.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Back what are you doing here? Still here?
- 6:19Speaker 1: Yeah? I came out to get some crumbs and here
- 6:22Speaker 1: you are. And that's I've never seen. That's the first
- 6:25Speaker 1: time I've ever seen a scorpion there, but I have
- 6:28Speaker 1: seen The first time I ever saw scorpions was an Escalante.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I was on a This was many years ago, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: I was on a camping trip. We hiked up this
- 6:38Speaker 1: little canyon and camped overnight outside of Oh, I take
- 6:42Speaker 1: it back, No, it was Escalanti. Was outside of Escalanti
- 6:46Speaker 1: and uh. And I woke up in the morning and
- 6:48Speaker 1: my eyes, both of my eyes were swollen shut, and
- 6:51Speaker 1: I thought, what I mean, really just swollen shot didn't
- 6:54Speaker 1: really hurt, but it was just like, what the hell?
- 6:58Speaker 1: And so, you know, I'm putting some car presses on
- 7:00Speaker 1: and getting it in there. The swellings kind of going down,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and we tore down our tent and there were two
- 7:05Speaker 1: scorpions underneath the tarp of the tent.
- 7:09Speaker 2: And I you hadn't felt, no.
- 7:12Speaker 1: But I'm speculating. That's I speculated. Oh, that's why my
- 7:16Speaker 1: eyes are spolling up. And then I got stung by
- 7:19Speaker 1: a scorpion once in Texas too, on the ankle, and
- 7:22Speaker 1: it hurts, but it didn't you know, you're still here.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I didn't get sick, and that little guy was you know,
- 7:31Speaker 1: probably it would be like a beasting probably, but they're
- 7:34Speaker 1: I gotta say they're pretty creepy. I was gonna say,
- 7:37Speaker 1: looking at that video, I just their creatures.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I don't want to encounter out, which is why they
- 7:43Speaker 2: look like aliens.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, they do.
- 7:45Speaker 2: That's why I will stay away from places that have them.
- 7:48Speaker 1: There is again X ninety six dot com slash live.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I found a black widow in the garage this weekend.
- 7:56Speaker 1: So you're never going in the garage again.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Well, I called my husband and I said, get it
- 8:05Speaker 2: now please.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I saw my grandfather on occasion. He was a carpenter
- 8:13Speaker 1: and he worked in basements and stuff, and I was
- 8:16Speaker 1: helping him out something. There were black widows in the
- 8:17Speaker 1: basement and he just squishing with his thumb.
- 8:22Speaker 2: My sister mckel twice ended up in the hospital with
- 8:28Speaker 2: black widow bites. Really wow. Our bedrooms were in the
- 8:32Speaker 2: basement and for whatever reason, her room was like she
- 8:36Speaker 2: has had like it so it's necrotizing, like it kills
- 8:40Speaker 2: your tissue. She's got a hole in her arm where
- 8:43Speaker 2: they had to cut out the dead tissue where it says.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Texter says, scorpions are attracted to water, so he's fine.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Plus They're extremely hard to kill, so.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I think I kind of thought maybe he just swam
- 8:57Speaker 1: down the drain and went I went elsewhere.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Not.
- 9:00Speaker 1: The only way to kill him is to smash them.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and Burnham. You got to cut their head off
- 9:05Speaker 2: with Burnham. Beat them, shoot them right between between guys.
- 9:08Speaker 2: That's the only way to take beat them.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Burnham, beat them, shoot them right between you. Oh and
- 9:13Speaker 1: then one other place to eat down. There's another place
- 9:15Speaker 1: in Boulder called the Burr Trail Grill. Best Hamburger uh
- 9:21Speaker 1: top top ten hamburgers I've ever had? Really, Yeah, I've
- 9:24Speaker 1: been there twice now, and just their basic hamburger with
- 9:28Speaker 1: a with white cheddar cheese melted on it. And it's
- 9:31Speaker 1: got onions and pickles and tomato and lettuce and and
- 9:36Speaker 1: a and a briosh toasted brioche bun and it's and
- 9:40Speaker 1: it's got to be local beef. I'm sure it is.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And I'm sure it's like ninety fat content, probably because
- 9:45Speaker 1: it's like you bite into it and the juice kind
- 9:48Speaker 1: of runs down your fingers and onto the plate.
- 9:50Speaker 2: And your beer. It got in your beard, didn't it?
- 9:52Speaker 1: No? Oh? Yeah I did, Yeah I did. Oh wait,
- 9:54Speaker 1: it's still oh is it.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I'm sorry that's with that shy, but.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I think we made reservations all ready to go down
- 10:04Speaker 1: there again next year.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Yeah, if you find a place like that, it's kind
- 10:08Speaker 2: of nice to just say we like going there, we
- 10:10Speaker 2: want to go back every year.
- 10:11Speaker 1: There's some nice hikes in the area, which I can't do,
- 10:15Speaker 1: so I stay home and read, and I can I
- 10:18Speaker 1: can hike down and it's not a hike. I can
- 10:20Speaker 1: walk down to the river and sit in a lawn chair,
- 10:24Speaker 1: dangle my feet in the river and read, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 1: but it's just a it's so peaceful.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I mean, other than the critters, it sounds nice. If
- 10:34Speaker 2: I'm going to relax, I don't know if I can
- 10:36Speaker 2: relax around critters.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Well, you have to just decritorize.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you know you have to.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Now that now that I mean, I've never seen a
- 10:43Speaker 1: black widow down there. Now that I know they're there,
- 10:47Speaker 1: I would I would just you know, turn the covers
- 10:50Speaker 1: back on the bed and make sure they're not because
- 10:53Speaker 1: they don't. I mean, they're you know, they don't want
- 10:54Speaker 1: to they don't want to mess with you. They want
- 10:57Speaker 1: you to leave them alone. As much as you want
- 10:58Speaker 1: to be lesser.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Now I feel itchy. Whenever I have this, you feel
- 11:03Speaker 2: like there's something.
- 11:06Speaker 1: You know what, I feel scratchy?
- 11:09Speaker 2: Oh, believe me, there's something in this studio. What there's vermin,
- 11:14Speaker 2: There's there's something there.
- 11:15Speaker 1: What are you meaning you right now? I don't know what.
- 11:17Speaker 2: There's something.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Don't you feel it? Oh? Wait a minute, Oh yeah
- 11:22Speaker 1: I do. Yeah, it's making my eyes it exactly. Geez,
- 11:27Speaker 1: all right,
