- 0:02Speaker 1: I'm the biepock mang Gender. Welcome to Like a Virgin
- 0:12Speaker 1: the show. Will we give Yesterday's pop culture, Today's takes.
- 0:16Speaker 1: My name's Rose. Damn you let me swallow my Hall's
- 0:20Speaker 1: lozenge real quick and let my co host introduce themselves.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Oh it's Rand Torondo. Um. Rose and I are reporting
- 0:29Speaker 1: to you live from our Um. We're merging from the sickness,
- 0:34Speaker 1: the sickness that sweeps the gay cough that sweeps our
- 0:37Speaker 1: our community. And every time to see the gay cough,
- 0:40Speaker 1: because I know straight people who have colds now too,
- 0:43Speaker 1: We're not We're not doing that. It's not it's not
- 0:47Speaker 1: specific to gay people. I'm also really hopeful that the
- 0:50Speaker 1: gay cough did like rise and then go extinct in
- 0:54Speaker 1: the summer of twenty twenty, which was truly nightmarish when
- 0:58Speaker 1: everybody caught that. Do you remember. Yeah, I also fully
- 1:01Speaker 1: caught this cold that I'm coming off of from my
- 1:04Speaker 1: straight relatives. So there's nothing gay about it. Could not
- 1:09Speaker 1: be could not be more, um more from the head
- 1:13Speaker 1: of aero patriarchy. Um, I'm coming off of having a
- 1:17Speaker 1: horrible cold, which honestly was most upsetting to me, not
- 1:21Speaker 1: only because I was sick, which I hate being sick.
- 1:24Speaker 1: But also I had so many cute plans this weekend.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I was supposed to go see Titanic and three D
- 1:31Speaker 1: on the big screen. Devastated now it's out of theaters. Um.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Howd a friend's birthday dinner to go to? And then
- 1:38Speaker 1: on Sunday, my friend was taking me to the ballet
- 1:41Speaker 1: and I had to miss it. No, what would you know?
- 1:45Speaker 1: What ballet? Was it? Sleeping Beauty at Lincoln. I'm Chakowski
- 1:51Speaker 1: is my face. It's the only thing I'll show up
- 1:52Speaker 1: to a ballet for. I'm devastated. I had had a
- 1:55Speaker 1: whole outfit planned. I was me fit, pick, let's go
- 2:01Speaker 1: to the Valet Rose. I think I still want to go.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I want to get tickets and go. Um even though,
- 2:07Speaker 1: but you know, this was free, so I was very
- 2:09Speaker 1: much looking forward to that. We love free. Oh I'm
- 2:15Speaker 1: still flemy. And then of course yesterday was the day
- 2:19Speaker 1: I was finally feeling better, and I had therapy this morning,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and I was like, you know what, I'm gonna go
- 2:23Speaker 1: to therapy. I'm gonna like get dressed up and wear
- 2:27Speaker 1: cute outfit and put makeup on and like be alive
- 2:29Speaker 1: for the first time in a week. And I woke
- 2:31Speaker 1: up this morning in like horrific neck pain because I
- 2:34Speaker 1: slept weird, and so I had to do therapy remotely.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So it's like I just can't win. My body is
- 2:41Speaker 1: falling apart. Oh no, oh god. Honestly, I'm like same
- 2:47Speaker 1: but different Mike. Mike hold is not as intense. It's
- 2:49Speaker 1: been like a loose cough this whole weekend that I
- 2:52Speaker 1: have tried to party my way through bad idea. I
- 2:55Speaker 1: did get COVID tested at the very least um, but
- 2:58Speaker 1: now last night I just like found myself getting sick.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And do you know what I have been doing with
- 3:04Speaker 1: my downtime over the last I guess, like I would say,
- 3:11Speaker 1: six five or six days now, I have a feeling
- 3:13Speaker 1: it involves reclining and watching a television show. It involves
- 3:20Speaker 1: rewatching Ugly Betty, which I hit play on season one,
- 3:25Speaker 1: episode one when I was in New York last weekend
- 3:27Speaker 1: and rose I have consumed now almost a complete three
- 3:33Speaker 1: seasons of Ugly Betty about to encroach on the fourth.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I am honestly I feel insane, Like no, what should
- 3:41Speaker 1: you should have feel insane? Because I it tis the
- 3:45Speaker 1: season to rewatch familiar TV. I'm neck deep in a
- 3:50Speaker 1: Buffy the Vampire Slayer rewatch and I started two and
- 3:56Speaker 1: a half weeks ago, perhaps who am now currently? I
- 4:01Speaker 1: just started season five and okay those are these are
- 4:05Speaker 1: twenty episode you know, forty five minute long. And I
- 4:11Speaker 1: mean to be fair, like I was sick this weekend.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I did not leave, as I said, I didn't leave
- 4:15Speaker 1: my apartment for days. I watched, um, you know, like
- 4:18Speaker 1: a season and a half over the course of three
- 4:22Speaker 1: days or less. Um. So I really have that. It's
- 4:27Speaker 1: so much And I haven't even been doing what I
- 4:34Speaker 1: used to do the last time I rewatched Buffy, which
- 4:37Speaker 1: was skip the episodes that I don't care for umiliar
- 4:42Speaker 1: with it. I really have been watching everything. Wow, Okay,
- 4:47Speaker 1: I honestly similarly, I was like, let's do it in
- 4:50Speaker 1: sequence all the way through. When was the last time
- 4:52Speaker 1: I did it? And honestly, this is like so fitting
- 4:55Speaker 1: because I ugly Betty is, as I've said on before,
- 5:00Speaker 1: like one of the most formative shows on the planet,
- 5:01Speaker 1: if not the most formative show of my life. And
- 5:04Speaker 1: I feel like Buffy is the most formative show of
- 5:06Speaker 1: your life. Um yeah, I like it's like such a
- 5:11Speaker 1: reward for Ugly Betty specifically, it's like such a rewarding
- 5:13Speaker 1: rewatch and like we'll do a full episode on it,
- 5:16Speaker 1: so like I won't get into it, but like it
- 5:19Speaker 1: is so amazing. It's such an amazing show, and it's
- 5:24Speaker 1: so deliciously problematic and exactly the time frame that it
- 5:28Speaker 1: came out. It's like a period piece. And also it's
- 5:31Speaker 1: a fantasy, like it is in a fantasy. It's it's
- 5:35Speaker 1: a yeah, it's a fantasy where in trans women look
- 5:38Speaker 1: like Rebecca Romaine. There are some trans women who look
- 5:42Speaker 1: like Rebecca Romaine, I know, I mean where they just
- 5:46Speaker 1: get to like emerge on the scene. It's like it's
- 5:48Speaker 1: a fantasy where trans women are cis women. Yes, yes,
- 5:52Speaker 1: that's what I but everyone calls them tranny and cheta. Yes,
- 5:58Speaker 1: we will be doing a Wee Betty episode. Very we
- 6:02Speaker 1: should do another Buffy app as well. Um yeah, I
- 6:05Speaker 1: mean I do think we covered it pretty you know, Um,
- 6:09Speaker 1: we we covered it pretty well. And we also did
- 6:11Speaker 1: our recent Sarah Michelle Geller sort of cruel intention but well,
- 6:18Speaker 1: never say never. But I have really been enjoying rewatching
- 6:22Speaker 1: it because I'm you know, over the year I haven't
- 6:27Speaker 1: done a proper all the way through Buffy rewatching probably
- 6:30Speaker 1: ten years UM. But I there are certain episodes that
- 6:34Speaker 1: I revisit, like the holiday episodes, like I always watched
- 6:39Speaker 1: the Thanksgiving episode of Thanksgiving, the Halloween episodes at Halloween,
- 6:43Speaker 1: the Christmas episode at Christmas UM, and then there are
- 6:46Speaker 1: a few other episodes that I've gone back and revisited
- 6:49Speaker 1: throughout the years. But this is the first time in
- 6:52Speaker 1: over a decade that I have truly gone through and
- 6:54Speaker 1: watched every episode in sequence, even the ones I don't
- 6:58Speaker 1: really care for. And it's interesting how I'm reacting to
- 7:05Speaker 1: it and like favoring plotlines and characters that I didn't
- 7:11Speaker 1: like as much the last go around, and like seeing
- 7:15Speaker 1: what it's like to interact with the show at the
- 7:17Speaker 1: place where I'm in my life now, and like how
- 7:19Speaker 1: it's different. You know, art media is ever changing, even
- 7:26Speaker 1: though it is you know, static. We we evolve and
- 7:31Speaker 1: the shows and pieces of art we love, I guess
- 7:34Speaker 1: evolve with us. Yeah, I mean, I when I'm watching
- 7:38Speaker 1: Ugly Betty for the first time post New York Magazine
- 7:43Speaker 1: media career, some of these plotlines, Girl, my jaw is
- 7:48Speaker 1: dropping because this show that was formative to me as
- 7:51Speaker 1: a teenager prophesied so many things that literally happened in
- 7:57Speaker 1: my life where I was Betty like, it's correct, crazy,
- 8:01Speaker 1: But wait, I want to know. When you were watching
- 8:03Speaker 1: Buffy you said some things you're watching, and now retroactively
- 8:06Speaker 1: you're like, I'm evaluating this different as an adult. Can
- 8:08Speaker 1: you give an example? Okay, So I was a diehard
- 8:13Speaker 1: Buffy Angel shipper the first time I watched Buffy, like
- 8:18Speaker 1: Buffy Angel fan fiction with some of the first fan
- 8:20Speaker 1: fiction I ever read, and watching it back again, I'm
- 8:26Speaker 1: now looking at it through the lens of like, why
- 8:29Speaker 1: is this old ass man hooking up with this teenage girl?
- 8:34Speaker 1: And like, obviously it's still emotional and powerful, but it's
- 8:40Speaker 1: just not doing it for me in the way that
- 8:42Speaker 1: it used to. And I'm at the point in season
- 8:44Speaker 1: five now when Spike is realizing that he is in
- 8:48Speaker 1: love with Buffy or at least attracted to her. And
- 8:52Speaker 1: I was never into the Spike and Buffy pairing quite
- 8:55Speaker 1: so much because I believed that she belonged with Angel.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And now that I'm watching it slowly unfold or like
- 9:02Speaker 1: organically and not looking at it like as something I've
- 9:06Speaker 1: already experienced. I like get it more and I'm kind
- 9:10Speaker 1: of like, wait, I'm kind of excited for them to
- 9:13Speaker 1: eventually become an item. Now are you saying here and
- 9:17Speaker 1: now on this podcast that you are team Spike, No,
- 9:21Speaker 1: because what I actually am is team Faith. Faith who
- 9:26Speaker 1: is the Slayer who went evil? There is so much
- 9:32Speaker 1: subtext there of her and Buffy having a vibey and
- 9:37Speaker 1: I remember, you know, I love that. I would love
- 9:43Speaker 1: to watch it one day. I I famously still have
- 9:46Speaker 1: not watched it all the way through, but I know
- 9:48Speaker 1: I will. It's it's it's honestly, the fact that I
- 9:50Speaker 1: got around to a Golden Girls watch is like proof
- 9:54Speaker 1: of concept enough that like I can do a Buffy watch, yes,
- 9:57Speaker 1: even though I mean the episodes are longer, I'm not.
- 10:02Speaker 1: It's it's definitely a bigger commitment. And Golden Girls you
- 10:09Speaker 1: can kind of like be on your phone during Buddy
- 10:13Speaker 1: It's a little harder to do that. But I have
- 10:16Speaker 1: to say, like, you know, fuck Jos Sweden and all,
- 10:20Speaker 1: but so much of the humor and the writing really
- 10:23Speaker 1: holds up. And I know that's not um solely because
- 10:28Speaker 1: of him, but you know, it's whatever death of the author. Um, yeah, please,
- 10:35Speaker 1: we can say the same thing about Ugly Betty, like
- 10:37Speaker 1: a show that is like astoundingly ahead of its time
- 10:40Speaker 1: and also like horribly horribly like something horrible to watch now. Yes,
- 10:46Speaker 1: you know, um, dear Virgins, you might you might have
- 10:49Speaker 1: cottoned on to the fact that we are taking our
- 10:54Speaker 1: taking our damn time today with little, our little chit
- 10:58Speaker 1: chat catchup moment. And that's because we are not going
- 11:01Speaker 1: to have a main discussion topic today. We didn't do
- 11:05Speaker 1: news last week, so we're going all in on, you know,
- 11:11Speaker 1: catching up. What's the goths, what's going on? So this
- 11:16Speaker 1: is just going to be like a true hangout key
- 11:19Speaker 1: key episode girls girling. This is a girls girling episode,
- 11:24Speaker 1: and we know that you do love those, so yeah,
- 11:28Speaker 1: So what's going on in your life? Girl? I know
- 11:30Speaker 1: you're about to make finally the big move. As of
- 11:35Speaker 1: time of record, I only have a week left in
- 11:37Speaker 1: Los Angeles. Feel um insane. I have not packed a
- 11:42Speaker 1: single I know. I'm looking behind you what you're a partner,
- 11:44Speaker 1: and I'm like, um, all of your stuff the walls.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I'm one of those girls that I don't like to
- 11:50Speaker 1: draw out, like tasks that I don't want to do Like,
- 11:54Speaker 1: I'm a girl that wants to do it all in
- 11:56Speaker 1: a consolidated time period about thirty six hours thirty six
- 12:01Speaker 1: to seventy two hours before. Oh that sounds super fun. Yeah,
- 12:05Speaker 1: I mean that's that's my stamina preference. I think it's
- 12:08Speaker 1: a better use of my time. But it is also
- 12:10Speaker 1: stressful sometimes. But you know, all things considered, I am
- 12:14Speaker 1: not very well rested. I was like up all last
- 12:17Speaker 1: night coughing and also thinking about a very bizarre interaction.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I had just a very bizarre experience I had yesterday.
- 12:26Speaker 1: That's like really fresh on my mind. Okay, I want
- 12:28Speaker 1: you to tell me, but first I do want you
- 12:29Speaker 1: to give you the chance to plug the fact that
- 12:31Speaker 1: you are casting off some of your possessions this weekend.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Oh my god, wait, I'm so glad that you said that. Okay,
- 12:41Speaker 1: dear Virgins, I am having an estate sale and a
- 12:45Speaker 1: goodbye soiree that almost everything must go okay in my apartment.
- 12:50Speaker 1: No Weirdosum, you can't get the address unless you know
- 12:54Speaker 1: you RSP. That information should be available on my Instagram
- 12:57Speaker 1: profile by the time this episode comes out. Thank you
- 13:00Speaker 1: for that, Rose, because I need cash. Not gonna lie
- 13:03Speaker 1: I'll get your transparent with all of you, and I
- 13:05Speaker 1: have nice things that you can come and pick up.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And also all patrons get a mimosa come on by. Okay, So,
- 13:28Speaker 1: so tell me about this weird interruption that you had
- 13:32Speaker 1: over the weekend. I dyed now, Okay, So I it's
- 13:37Speaker 1: crazy because I actually haven't talked to you that much
- 13:41Speaker 1: about this yet. But I enrolled in a recreational acting
- 13:46Speaker 1: class or what. We have discussed it a bit, but
- 13:50Speaker 1: not not at length. Yes, but I will say I
- 13:53Speaker 1: signed up to what I thought would be a recreational
- 13:57Speaker 1: acting class, is how I should say it. And honest,
- 14:00Speaker 1: this is going to be a little bit of like
- 14:01Speaker 1: a fran voicemail length story if you're willing to hear it.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But like I, I'm directing some of this year. I'm
- 14:10Speaker 1: trying to learn about acting because of that. Have you
- 14:14Speaker 1: ever taken acting class? Roos girl, I went to acting
- 14:18Speaker 1: school in college. I always forget about our ghost lives,
- 14:25Speaker 1: right of course. Okay, So acting's insane, yes, Like acting
- 14:29Speaker 1: is an insane thing to do with your life. And
- 14:33Speaker 1: I didn't realize that I couldn't just like come in
- 14:36Speaker 1: and be like, hey, I just want to learn about this. Like,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I'm like a respectful student that genuinely just wants to
- 14:41Speaker 1: learn about acting. I'm not trying to be an actor,
- 14:44Speaker 1: you know what. I see. The problem there is that
- 14:46Speaker 1: you're in Los Angeles, where, yeah, everyone is trying to
- 14:49Speaker 1: be an actor or at least get cast on a
- 14:52Speaker 1: reality dating show. Yes, okay, wait, you are hitting the
- 14:57Speaker 1: nail on the head about because Okay, so I signed
- 15:02Speaker 1: up for literally eight classes. I was like, let me
- 15:04Speaker 1: dip and dip out right before I leave to New York,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and if I like it, I can keep doing it
- 15:09Speaker 1: in New York whatever. Day one hour one of this class.
- 15:13Speaker 1: It is a three hour class. I hate this class.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Like the first hour. I hate this class. In my mind,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I'm hating the teacher. She is giving like really like
- 15:28Speaker 1: violent erratic energy, like really blunt, really kurt, like doesn't
- 15:34Speaker 1: say things that are like mighty to people, like just
- 15:37Speaker 1: speaks to everyone in a way that I'm just like,
- 15:39Speaker 1: I don't love this, like white woman, Yeah that's an
- 15:42Speaker 1: acting teacher. Yeah, that's an acting teacher exactly. And that
- 15:46Speaker 1: was kind of so our one. I was kind of
- 15:48Speaker 1: just like realizing things in real time about like what
- 15:50Speaker 1: acting is a world that I very naively knew nothing
- 15:54Speaker 1: about going into it. I don't have anything in common
- 15:58Speaker 1: with anyone in this class. It is a student body
- 16:01Speaker 1: like I can only really describe as like twenty or so,
- 16:05Speaker 1: like cis gender, nano influencers, and I feel like that
- 16:09Speaker 1: sounds right, yeah, yeah yeah, And I feel like I like,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I'm like, this class is going to be a colossal
- 16:15Speaker 1: waste of my time. Hour two of my first class,
- 16:19Speaker 1: I was like, wait, actually, like this teacher is like
- 16:22Speaker 1: really hard on them, and she's pushing them, and like
- 16:24Speaker 1: she's actually really smart, and like I'm kind of listening
- 16:26Speaker 1: to what she's saying, and I'm like the classes, I
- 16:29Speaker 1: should also say, the classes never really explain or described.
- 16:32Speaker 1: There's no introductions, Like it's not a class where like
- 16:34Speaker 1: you meet each other, you do like fun little games
- 16:36Speaker 1: and exercise ice breaker. Yeah, there's no fucking icebriggers. Yeah no,
- 16:40Speaker 1: that's not Yes, it's a cheap, cheap class and you
- 16:43Speaker 1: only get to participate in like five minutes per class whatever.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It's kind of crazy. Um. And so by hour three
- 16:53Speaker 1: of my first class, I'm just like, actually, this teacher
- 16:56Speaker 1: is iconic, and I think that I love you Yes,
- 17:00Speaker 1: I love her because she's a bitch, and I think
- 17:03Speaker 1: that I actually really even if I don't really agree
- 17:06Speaker 1: with how she's kind of treating the students. I fucked
- 17:09Speaker 1: with her, and I only need to be in eight classes,
- 17:11Speaker 1: so I'm just gonna be like invisible. You think it's fierce.
- 17:13Speaker 1: She's mother, Yes, she's kind of giving mother's yeah's mother, Okay, okay, okay.
- 17:19Speaker 1: So I'm going to say something else that's probably really
- 17:21Speaker 1: stupid to actors. So this class teaches Meisner the Meisner method, Right,
- 17:25Speaker 1: are you familiar at all? Somewhat? You might need to
- 17:28Speaker 1: refresh my memory on the specifics of it. To be honest,
- 17:31Speaker 1: if I were to try to get into it, it
- 17:33Speaker 1: would be so difficult to describe. It's like so annoying
- 17:36Speaker 1: and weird to describe. But all you need to know
- 17:38Speaker 1: is that it's a methodology of acting that's taught in
- 17:40Speaker 1: a lot of to reenacting schools. There are a few
- 17:42Speaker 1: different methods, and it's like next to like Stanislavski and
- 17:45Speaker 1: like method acting and like, yeah, Stanislavsky was more what
- 17:48Speaker 1: I fucked with when I was an actress. Wait, really
- 17:52Speaker 1: you were? You learned much like Gaga the Stanislavsky method. Yes,
- 17:56Speaker 1: my college acting professor was a devotee of Staroslavsky Waite.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I feel honestly ashamed that I actually don't know that
- 18:06Speaker 1: much about your era as an actress. That's that's on purpose, babe,
- 18:12Speaker 1: that is my designs. Like you also haven't seen a
- 18:14Speaker 1: lot of photos of me pre transition, you know, like
- 18:17Speaker 1: obviously this is all intentional. I've seen literally one that
- 18:22Speaker 1: you can centrally showed to me on this podcast. Um
- 18:26Speaker 1: one photo. Um okay, okay, okay, back to back to
- 18:29Speaker 1: let me. I'm trying to stay on track on the
- 18:31Speaker 1: friend voicemail on the friend voicemail here. Um. So this
- 18:35Speaker 1: class teaches Meisner from a truly cold outside perspective, someone
- 18:40Speaker 1: who knows nothing about acting or about Meisner. I have
- 18:42Speaker 1: to say, the vibe is immediately giving cult like immediately
- 18:46Speaker 1: like she is berating these kids, kids she doesn't know
- 18:50Speaker 1: at all. By the way, like a lot of these
- 18:52Speaker 1: students have, like me, have been in three or four classes.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Others have been there for like you know, a month
- 18:58Speaker 1: or two. Like there there are tears at which the
- 19:00Speaker 1: students have been in the class because it's on a
- 19:02Speaker 1: rolling basis. But she is like speaking to these kids
- 19:05Speaker 1: like they're her children and not necessarily yes, because she's
- 19:10Speaker 1: weather and it's and it's and honestly, it's just it's
- 19:13Speaker 1: it's crazy. So, uh, we have to do this exercising
- 19:17Speaker 1: class that's again really difficult to describe, so I'm not
- 19:19Speaker 1: going to get into it, but like the baseline is,
- 19:23Speaker 1: there is an extremely difficult kind of like technique to
- 19:26Speaker 1: learn that requires like a lot of mental brainwork and
- 19:28Speaker 1: it's almost like a little bit of a riddle UM.
- 19:31Speaker 1: And you do this like repetition exercise that is it's hard,
- 19:35Speaker 1: it's it's hard to do as a beginner. This is
- 19:37Speaker 1: a beginner level class and we're all learning UM, and
- 19:40Speaker 1: we have to perform these exercises, performing the kind of
- 19:45Speaker 1: like this like very specific rule UM of the Meisner
- 19:50Speaker 1: School of acting, and these little sketches in groups of
- 19:54Speaker 1: two or three at a time, like one after another.
- 19:57Speaker 1: So I've been at this in this point three or
- 19:59Speaker 1: four classes. I really have not experienced a ton. I
- 20:02Speaker 1: don't know any of my fellow students really, like like
- 20:07Speaker 1: we're all a lot of us are in this cold.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Yesterday I was an acting class and this woman was
- 20:17Speaker 1: on a death rampage like she was like, leave no prisoners,
- 20:24Speaker 1: scorched Earth, I want to kill everyone, and I'm in
- 20:28Speaker 1: today is the day that you all die? Like it
- 20:31Speaker 1: was so I'm not gonna lie. Riveting. It was riveting.
- 20:37Speaker 1: And and victim number one, so like there a few
- 20:40Speaker 1: exercises happened. They were going, Okay, Victim number one. A
- 20:43Speaker 1: girl gets into this exercise. She is not doing amazing
- 20:48Speaker 1: basically because she's not really following this like Meisner rule
- 20:51Speaker 1: that is drilled into us. At this point, she's repeating
- 20:54Speaker 1: this Meisner rule over and over to us. And this
- 20:57Speaker 1: girl is kind of just like that, you have to
- 21:00Speaker 1: repeat what the other person is saying to you. It's
- 21:03Speaker 1: it's it's kind of it's it's again, it's it's. So
- 21:07Speaker 1: it's hard to describe without me going into like no,
- 21:09Speaker 1: no it because yeah, like it's like about scene it's
- 21:13Speaker 1: like about scene work and like that. You're like listening
- 21:16Speaker 1: before you speak, but you're not but you're not really
- 21:18Speaker 1: supposed to. Yeah, you're listening and you're not really supposed
- 21:21Speaker 1: to improvise, right, you're not supposed to be conversational. You're
- 21:23Speaker 1: not asking questions, You're just really trying to repeat things
- 21:26Speaker 1: at each other until you catch an emotional pinch point.
- 21:29Speaker 1: It's so I sound I see I'm participating in the cult. Okay,
- 21:34Speaker 1: So this girl finishes the exercise, she kind of that
- 21:37Speaker 1: kind of just oh my god, I just said her name.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Will you believe that? Okay? Okay, So I just said
- 21:45Speaker 1: the teacher's name, and I have to say that this
- 21:47Speaker 1: woman has a very satisfying white woman. No, when you
- 21:51Speaker 1: said it, I was like, yep, that's her name. Um,
- 21:54Speaker 1: she kind of cuts you off. She decides when you're done.
- 21:56Speaker 1: The teacher says what says when you're done? And she
- 21:58Speaker 1: turns to the class and she goes, so, what was
- 22:00Speaker 1: wrong with this iconic? And she trains the kids to
- 22:10Speaker 1: to humiliate the students on stage in real time by
- 22:15Speaker 1: repeating the thing that everybody knows that this person on
- 22:17Speaker 1: stage doesn't know. Isn't that isn't that crazy? And she goes,
- 22:21Speaker 1: so this isn't working because she's not repeating blah blah
- 22:24Speaker 1: blah and all these ds like she's culturing and conditioning
- 22:28Speaker 1: the class to Brady. Yeah, acting is any kind of
- 22:33Speaker 1: acting school or theater school is psychological warfare? Yes, and
- 22:38Speaker 1: through the whole time this whole class, and honestly a
- 22:40Speaker 1: little bit in previous classes. She's really like specific about
- 22:44Speaker 1: pitting the kids against each other. She goes, she'll say, actually,
- 22:48Speaker 1: like yes exactly, so I'll get into that. But she
- 22:52Speaker 1: she goes, did you She turns to the girl and
- 22:54Speaker 1: she goes, did you rehearse? And she goes, no, I
- 22:55Speaker 1: haven't rehearsed. And she's like really big about rehearsal, and
- 22:57Speaker 1: she goes, you guys need to rehearse. You guys need
- 23:00Speaker 1: to rehearse or you're gonna show up and you're gonna suck.
- 23:02Speaker 1: You're gonna show up and you're gonna suck. And she
- 23:04Speaker 1: turns to the girl and she goes, she was like,
- 23:06Speaker 1: how do you think you did today? And she was
- 23:08Speaker 1: like the girl was like literally just trying to advocate
- 23:10Speaker 1: for herself, Like she's not being disrespectful, she's just kind
- 23:13Speaker 1: of like, you know, at our time, I think I
- 23:15Speaker 1: did okay, Like she's genuinely trying to analyze herself and goes, Okay,
- 23:20Speaker 1: well you sucked. I love her. She's victim number two
- 23:28Speaker 1: steps up here, and again not the same mistake, but
- 23:33Speaker 1: like a truly a truly honest mistake. And infraction on
- 23:39Speaker 1: like not understanding what the Meisner method is. And this
- 23:42Speaker 1: is a girl who is at the same experience level
- 23:44Speaker 1: as me, So the previous girl she's been in like
- 23:47Speaker 1: another month or class. This girl, like like me, has
- 23:50Speaker 1: only met Kathleen three times. I just said her name again.
- 23:55Speaker 1: This girl, much like mother, much like Brenda, has only
- 24:01Speaker 1: we've we've only met her. Oh wait, sorry, So this
- 24:05Speaker 1: girl has literally only met Kathleen like three or four times. Um,
- 24:11Speaker 1: I can't believe. I just said. I can't believe. I'm
- 24:15Speaker 1: so sleep deprived. So this girl literally has only met
- 24:21Speaker 1: my teacher, has only met mother three or four times.
- 24:25Speaker 1: She doesn't do the exercise right. She has watched other
- 24:28Speaker 1: students get chewed out. And she's doing this thing that
- 24:32Speaker 1: mister people hate, which is acting. She always says, like,
- 24:35Speaker 1: no acting up there. I don't want to see you
- 24:36Speaker 1: putting on a character. And she kind of puts on
- 24:38Speaker 1: a teeny bit of a character, just like a wink.
- 24:40Speaker 1: And this woman, this woman to shoots her in the head. Yes.
- 24:45Speaker 1: And this girl was like a teeny tiny little white
- 24:48Speaker 1: girl from Kansas City, Like she just stepped right off
- 24:50Speaker 1: the bus and she was here to like live her
- 24:53Speaker 1: dream like she believed in my will. But Kathleen, Kathleen, sorry,
- 25:02Speaker 1: I keep saying her name, And so mother turns the
- 25:04Speaker 1: class again and she's like, okay, so why was this weird?
- 25:06Speaker 1: This was weird right, like like cuts her. It's so bizarre.
- 25:10Speaker 1: She's like, so, why was this weird? Yeah, and she
- 25:12Speaker 1: turns to the girl and she goes, so what you
- 25:14Speaker 1: did it was fucking weird. And she goes okay, and
- 25:20Speaker 1: she's smiling receiving this feedback, like tears streaming down her eyes,
- 25:25Speaker 1: and she's just like, she's like okay, and this woman goes,
- 25:29Speaker 1: she goes, if you show up and you do that
- 25:31Speaker 1: at your job, it's like everyone's gonna be annoyed with you.
- 25:35Speaker 1: You will never work in this town if you show
- 25:38Speaker 1: up and do that. She's three class. She's so real
- 25:42Speaker 1: for that, and then she love her Yes, she says you,
- 25:46Speaker 1: she says, you're never gonna work in this town again.
- 25:48Speaker 1: And then she says, she goes, she goes, what you
- 25:52Speaker 1: did up there was annoying. You annoy me, and this
- 25:58Speaker 1: girl grinned and took it, and that this is the
- 26:02Speaker 1: point in the class. There was also another group of
- 26:04Speaker 1: victims where in like someone wasn't doing the exercise properly,
- 26:07Speaker 1: so that my teacher went for that person. She choose
- 26:10Speaker 1: them out. The other student throws the other student under
- 26:13Speaker 1: the bus. It's like it's like their carnivores. Like we're
- 26:16Speaker 1: just trying to survive out here. And I'm realizing, Rose,
- 26:19Speaker 1: in real time, that my teacher is lydiatar, and that
- 26:27Speaker 1: I am literally in real time experiencing the auditorium scene,
- 26:33Speaker 1: and I as a first time student, I am about
- 26:36Speaker 1: to get on stage after all of these students have
- 26:39Speaker 1: been chewed out, and I am a BIPOC fan gender
- 26:44Speaker 1: you said it, and so okay, look we're traumatized people.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I was in fighter flight mode. I was like actually
- 26:52Speaker 1: kind of wigging out because I was like, I Rose,
- 26:55Speaker 1: you know me, like I will grin and bear a
- 26:58Speaker 1: lot of things. I will not let someone disrespect me. No,
- 27:03Speaker 1: you you know, and even in a professional setting, I
- 27:08Speaker 1: will not tolerate any level of disrespect. And so when
- 27:13Speaker 1: if someone said to my face, you suck, I honestly
- 27:18Speaker 1: have no idea like what I would have done. It's
- 27:21Speaker 1: always kind of preparing myself for like what this woman,
- 27:25Speaker 1: what this teacher was going to do, to me and
- 27:27Speaker 1: you slayed. No, I didn't. I didn't slay. And what
- 27:32Speaker 1: I thought that was going to be the triumphant twist
- 27:34Speaker 1: of this story. Well, to be totally honest, like I
- 27:37Speaker 1: have actually been doing I feel a really great job
- 27:40Speaker 1: in the class for like what I wanted to accomplish.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I am taking this class, and this I think is
- 27:45Speaker 1: a good way to kind of polish it off. But
- 27:47Speaker 1: like I'm taking this class specifically because like I'm bad
- 27:49Speaker 1: at being in my body. I'm like really bad at
- 27:52Speaker 1: listening a lot of the time, and like I feel
- 27:55Speaker 1: like it's acting is like a really worthwhile skill set,
- 27:58Speaker 1: especially this method that would help me with a lot
- 28:01Speaker 1: of things that I want to learn how to do
- 28:03Speaker 1: in an outside of Hollywood. And so I'm they're just
- 28:05Speaker 1: like genuinely trying to learn, and she's up here being like,
- 28:08Speaker 1: you guys will never make your dreams. You're all gonna suck.
- 28:12Speaker 1: You all suck, and I'm just kind of like this
- 28:13Speaker 1: isn't my dream and I'm like perfectly fine with sucking.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Like that's kind of that was kind of the issue
- 28:19Speaker 1: that I was like going through my head, is like
- 28:20Speaker 1: I was like, I have no problem with you tell
- 28:22Speaker 1: me I suck. I'm not trying to be an actor,
- 28:24Speaker 1: you know what I mean, So, like your words don't
- 28:26Speaker 1: really affect me, but everyone else in that room is
- 28:29Speaker 1: trying to be an actor. Yes, And also no offense
- 28:31Speaker 1: to everyone else in this room. I don't care about
- 28:33Speaker 1: what any of these people think. So like, this woman
- 28:35Speaker 1: can try to humiliate me, but like she's not going
- 28:38Speaker 1: to And she tried it, she literally tried it, and
- 28:42Speaker 1: she started by coming for me by something that I
- 28:45Speaker 1: did that was not against the rules of the exercise,
- 28:48Speaker 1: but because she was on a rampage, she decided to
- 28:51Speaker 1: come for me, and so I was like, look, and
- 28:54Speaker 1: luckily the girl that was in the exercise with me
- 28:56Speaker 1: also advocated like for both of us, and we were
- 28:59Speaker 1: both kind of we were the only students the entire
- 29:02Speaker 1: class that ever stood up to her because she was
- 29:07Speaker 1: being crazy, like truly being crazy, but she was also
- 29:11Speaker 1: being iconic, and so it's like really hard it goes. Yeah,
- 29:17Speaker 1: But anyways, I know exactly who I am and I
- 29:20Speaker 1: know my self worth and I'm going to advocate for
- 29:23Speaker 1: that every time. So like what you say to me,
- 29:25Speaker 1: like has no bearing on what I do outside of
- 29:29Speaker 1: this class, because you don't know anything about that, And
- 29:31Speaker 1: I think that it was just weird to experience this
- 29:34Speaker 1: place where the stakes were very high for everyone else,
- 29:37Speaker 1: and I'm just like kind of a weird fly on
- 29:41Speaker 1: the wall slash, Like it feels like I'm in a documentary. Well,
- 29:45Speaker 1: I mean, good for you for telling mother to go
- 29:49Speaker 1: fund herself. You know, you never have to deal with
- 29:52Speaker 1: this again because you're literally moving across the country, But
- 29:56Speaker 1: you know, it is rough for people who legitimately want
- 29:59Speaker 1: to be act and the amount of torture you have
- 30:02Speaker 1: to put yourself through to do that. I remember there
- 30:05Speaker 1: was one scene study class that I was in in
- 30:07Speaker 1: college where we did this exercise where we would have
- 30:12Speaker 1: to run up and down the stairs of the building
- 30:16Speaker 1: five times and then come in and do our scene,
- 30:20Speaker 1: because the thought was that like getting to an extreme
- 30:24Speaker 1: level of physicality would bring out genuine emotion. And like,
- 30:28Speaker 1: of course, in the moment, you're telling yourself like, yeah,
- 30:32Speaker 1: that totally worked. That was amazing, But like that's not
- 30:35Speaker 1: something that's replicable when you're a working actor, which like
- 30:38Speaker 1: ostensibly is the goal of going to acting school. And
- 30:42Speaker 1: I think a lot of this and probably what you
- 30:44Speaker 1: experience is like a lot of teachers are able to
- 30:48Speaker 1: tell themselves that it's okay to be hard on their
- 30:50Speaker 1: students because of how cutthroat the business that they're going
- 30:55Speaker 1: into is. And a lot of them are failed actors themselves,
- 30:59Speaker 1: and they're thinking, like, well, if they can't handle this
- 31:02Speaker 1: in class, then it's better that they learned that now
- 31:05Speaker 1: before they go out into the world and try to
- 31:08Speaker 1: make it as actors. It is literally it's exactly what
- 31:12Speaker 1: like it reminded me of Tyr Banks in America's Next
- 31:15Speaker 1: Top Model, where she like choose, you choose if you,
- 31:17Speaker 1: as the teacher or arbiter of this space, are choosing
- 31:20Speaker 1: to just like just to like participate and to enforce
- 31:25Speaker 1: existing oppressive systems in your industry instead of actively wanting
- 31:28Speaker 1: to change them. Like it's just kind of bonkers. And
- 31:31Speaker 1: the reality is like to be an actor, all you
- 31:34Speaker 1: have to be is hot, Like it truly doesn't matter
- 31:36Speaker 1: how talented you are. Yes, yes, yes, yes, I completely
- 31:41Speaker 1: agree with that. And also just to as a side note,
- 31:44Speaker 1: you have to run up like ten flights of stairs
- 31:46Speaker 1: or whatever for like acting, like listen, that is a
- 31:49Speaker 1: method that only works if you went too like the
- 31:51Speaker 1: Matilda school of like musical theater where they make those
- 31:54Speaker 1: kids probably run like fifteen flights before every scene. Honey,
- 31:58Speaker 1: you know I do. I think it's interesting that you
- 32:16Speaker 1: are talking about this as a cult, because I've been
- 32:18Speaker 1: thinking a lot about cults over the past couple of days.
- 32:22Speaker 1: I watched this new Hulu documentary Stolen Youth. Have you
- 32:27Speaker 1: heard about it? No? I haven't so Stolen Youth as
- 32:31Speaker 1: a documentary about it's Stolen Youth, the cult inside the cult,
- 32:34Speaker 1: it's Sarah Lawrence. I totally didn't know that this ever happened,
- 32:39Speaker 1: but in like the early twenty tens, there was a
- 32:43Speaker 1: cult of kids who went to Sarah Lawrence. And it
- 32:48Speaker 1: was these kids who all lived together and like on
- 32:52Speaker 1: campus housing or off campus housing, I don't know um
- 32:57Speaker 1: and one of their dads had been in prison and
- 33:01Speaker 1: when he got out, came and stayed with them, which
- 33:04Speaker 1: is like why would you let it happen? And then
- 33:07Speaker 1: he basically like became a cult leader and a bunch
- 33:12Speaker 1: of them like moved into a one bedroom apartment in
- 33:15Speaker 1: the city with him, and there was like sex trafficking
- 33:20Speaker 1: and all this crazy shit. And you know, it's a
- 33:23Speaker 1: very interesting documentary. It's only three episodes, which is good
- 33:27Speaker 1: because I like, couldn't have done more, and it's I
- 33:33Speaker 1: I appreciate it because with something that's like true crime,
- 33:39Speaker 1: I need it to have like a definitive ending. Like
- 33:42Speaker 1: I hate a true crime thing where it's like the
- 33:45Speaker 1: mystery is still unsolved or like the killer is still
- 33:48Speaker 1: out yeah, or like you know, it's the trial hasn't
- 33:50Speaker 1: happened this like the trial happened very recently. This guy
- 33:54Speaker 1: is serving sixty years in prison with that parole. It's
- 33:58Speaker 1: like it's done. You know, people have gotten out of
- 34:01Speaker 1: the cult. There's one girlie who's still like she has
- 34:04Speaker 1: only just now disavowed him. But the thing that I
- 34:09Speaker 1: was thinking, which is what I always think when cult
- 34:11Speaker 1: stuff happens, is couldn't be me. He couldn't he could
- 34:15Speaker 1: have never gotten me. I would never have bought into
- 34:18Speaker 1: that ship. And honestly, I kind of judge them for
- 34:22Speaker 1: being susceptible to it because like this guy is so
- 34:28Speaker 1: he's like so clearly, like he's this like ugly like
- 34:33Speaker 1: doughey white guy who just like manipulated all these college
- 34:37Speaker 1: kids and like they were you know, they were adults,
- 34:42Speaker 1: they were they were like sophomores. In college. And I'm
- 34:45Speaker 1: not not to victim blame, but but but I'm victim blame.
- 34:50Speaker 1: But I just I watched this and I just like
- 34:53Speaker 1: truly don't get how you can be how you can like,
- 34:59Speaker 1: uh like be a sheep a sheep like that and
- 35:02Speaker 1: and let this person like the things that this guy
- 35:07Speaker 1: had them doing. Like obviously you know some of these
- 35:13Speaker 1: like there was one kid who, um, you know, was
- 35:17Speaker 1: like struggling with his sexuality and the guy like twisted
- 35:21Speaker 1: all of his ideas of like what it was to
- 35:23Speaker 1: be a man. And you know, um, I get that
- 35:27Speaker 1: people are vulnerable and could be manipulated, but I just
- 35:29Speaker 1: watched these cult things and I'm like, no, not me,
- 35:32Speaker 1: because like, if there's two things I'm always happy to do,
- 35:36Speaker 1: it's not listen to what people have to say and
- 35:38Speaker 1: just stay home. And you know, for the for those reasons,
- 35:42Speaker 1: I truly believe I could never be I could never
- 35:45Speaker 1: be hoodwinked into joining a fault. But on the flip side,
- 35:49Speaker 1: I do think I could very easily start a cult.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Oh I do that I could. I could really um,
- 35:56Speaker 1: I could manipulate. I could be a good cult leader
- 35:58Speaker 1: and manipulate people into like living or dying on my word. Well,
- 36:02Speaker 1: for the virgins, I think that that was implied. It's
- 36:04Speaker 1: just very interesting to like look at this. I'm able
- 36:08Speaker 1: to like watch these things from such a such a
- 36:11Speaker 1: distance and like find it interesting and just fully not
- 36:15Speaker 1: understand what could lead someone to think that that was normal. Yeah,
- 36:21Speaker 1: I just yeah, I just really get it. I just
- 36:23Speaker 1: really don't get it. It's like being a turf, you know,
- 36:25Speaker 1: I don't. I don't get so you can like devote
- 36:28Speaker 1: your whole life to something that is like so lame
- 36:33Speaker 1: and like unimportant and like just like go touch grass.
- 36:38Speaker 1: It's wretched and it's also like not even about you
- 36:41Speaker 1: like you are. That's the thing about cults. I honestly
- 36:44Speaker 1: I empathize. I also feel like I can be I
- 36:47Speaker 1: can feel judgmental about people that are highly susceptible, but
- 36:50Speaker 1: I'm also a people pleaser. Like I feel like I
- 36:52Speaker 1: am highly susceptible, and I don't know, It's it's tough.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Sometimes this is a grey area. Yeah, um, I do
- 37:00Speaker 1: want to take a little trip into Rose's book corner. Yes,
- 37:06Speaker 1: we need like we need like some theme music or
- 37:08Speaker 1: something for Rose's book Corner. We need like a kind
- 37:10Speaker 1: of reading rainbow ass like theme music kind of momentum So,
- 37:16Speaker 1: as any of you who have been falling along with
- 37:19Speaker 1: Rose's book club no m our. First, like foray into
- 37:23Speaker 1: this was reading man Hunt by Gretchen Felker Martin. Um
- 37:28Speaker 1: I just finished it about a week ago. It took
- 37:30Speaker 1: me a little bit to get into it, but then
- 37:33Speaker 1: once I was about halfway through, I really powered through
- 37:37Speaker 1: the end and read it in like a like a
- 37:39Speaker 1: day or two. Um. So, the novel is a post
- 37:43Speaker 1: apocalyptic zombie horror story in which a virus called t
- 37:49Speaker 1: Rex has decimated the world's population. It's a zombie virus
- 37:53Speaker 1: that specifically targets testosterone, so it turns anyone with you know,
- 38:00Speaker 1: an abundance of testosterone in their body largely sis men
- 38:03Speaker 1: into these you know, like very animalistic, super disgusting zombies
- 38:10Speaker 1: who in like a somewhat like different take on zombies
- 38:17Speaker 1: not only like eat and kill people, but rape people.
- 38:22Speaker 1: And so that was like a you know, disturbing edition
- 38:25Speaker 1: and like for anyone who hasn't yet read this book,
- 38:28Speaker 1: like some serious trigger warnings about sexual salt, transphobia, like
- 38:33Speaker 1: lots of different stuff, but you can you know, investigate
- 38:36Speaker 1: that on your own and so the survivors in the
- 38:41Speaker 1: zombie apocalypse are women and m sis women trans women,
- 38:47Speaker 1: and that is really the divide of this novel. So
- 38:50Speaker 1: there's um. The two real main characters are these two
- 38:56Speaker 1: trans girls, Beth and Fran, and they and it's such
- 39:00Speaker 1: a good One of them is named Fran. Her name
- 39:03Speaker 1: is Fran fine like the Nannie. Yeah name, I love that, Okay,
- 39:09Speaker 1: but it's never really like talked about, but it just
- 39:11Speaker 1: that's her name, and I think that's funny. So so
- 39:15Speaker 1: they um then and then when the novel starts, they
- 39:18Speaker 1: are so they they they call themselves man hunters. They
- 39:23Speaker 1: go around um hunting down zombie men to extract their
- 39:27Speaker 1: testicles because they're the only source of estrogen in this
- 39:32Speaker 1: post apocalyptic world. They are friends with the doctor who
- 39:36Speaker 1: extracts estrogen from the testicles and um like sells it
- 39:42Speaker 1: to women like older women with pcos um. And the
- 39:47Speaker 1: premise is so it's really fascinating because, like you know,
- 39:52Speaker 1: as we've been talking about with like the Last of
- 39:54Speaker 1: Us all zombie media, UM looks at the way the
- 39:59Speaker 1: world old reforms after it falls apart, and so to
- 40:03Speaker 1: look at through the lens of transness, and gender is
- 40:06Speaker 1: really fascinating. And so these these women are like out hunting,
- 40:14Speaker 1: they come across this roving band of turfs. So turfs
- 40:18Speaker 1: have now banded together to form this thing called the Matriarchy,
- 40:22Speaker 1: and they are like a militant organization who you know,
- 40:27Speaker 1: go around like killing trans women, and they've taken over
- 40:30Speaker 1: different cities. And then also like in their travels, they
- 40:35Speaker 1: pick up a trans man who has been living on
- 40:40Speaker 1: his own, like living on the land, and he's very
- 40:43Speaker 1: like he he like is really like gun savvy, and
- 40:46Speaker 1: he doesn't want to go with them because he has
- 40:48Speaker 1: some like bad experiences in his past, but he ends
- 40:51Speaker 1: up joining them. They and their doctor friend eventually become
- 40:55Speaker 1: part of this commune that's run by this like this
- 40:58Speaker 1: little billionaire girl. There's also another character who is a
- 41:03Speaker 1: POV who is part of the matriarchy, but she is
- 41:08Speaker 1: a chaser and is like in love with this non
- 41:12Speaker 1: binary sex worker. And so it's like just all these
- 41:16Speaker 1: different viewpoints into what this world looks like and the
- 41:21Speaker 1: thing most about but I felt while reading this, and
- 41:24Speaker 1: I brought this up a couple other times talking about
- 41:27Speaker 1: novels written about or by trans people is like reading
- 41:32Speaker 1: this gave me this feeling like I would love to
- 41:36Speaker 1: only read novels written by trans people, because I only
- 41:41Speaker 1: want to read trans characters who are written by trans people,
- 41:44Speaker 1: Because there's just something that SIS people don't get. There.
- 41:48Speaker 1: There are ways of thinking that SIS people just don't
- 41:51Speaker 1: think about the ways in which we talk to each other,
- 41:56Speaker 1: the ways in which we think about ourselves, how mean
- 42:00Speaker 1: we can be about each other, Like you know, like
- 42:04Speaker 1: the it's there. There are some ridiculous moments where like
- 42:08Speaker 1: we're in the we're in the apoc like post apocalyptic world,
- 42:12Speaker 1: zombie world, and people are still worried about like how
- 42:16Speaker 1: how much they pass, which is how it would work.
- 42:19Speaker 1: How like how fem they are compared to other trans
- 42:21Speaker 1: women still like calling each other bricks. Um. It's it's
- 42:26Speaker 1: just it's so scary, but it feels so possible, which
- 42:33Speaker 1: is I think the best. Um, the best like the
- 42:38Speaker 1: when when dystopian fiction is at its best is when
- 42:42Speaker 1: you can see how it would happen. Um. And I
- 42:46Speaker 1: also love that like within the kind of thematic question
- 42:49Speaker 1: of this book that you're laying out, like a lot
- 42:52Speaker 1: of the things you're talking about, like these kind of
- 42:54Speaker 1: trans two point zero three point zero conversations or ways
- 42:57Speaker 1: of thinking to then be met it on the rest
- 43:00Speaker 1: of the world, because it's now become a biological impart,
- 43:04Speaker 1: Like it's become a cultural disaster that now requires the
- 43:09Speaker 1: help of trans women, and you still like now you're
- 43:12Speaker 1: forced to wrap your head around this in some way
- 43:14Speaker 1: or to think about it. Yeah, and then and you
- 43:17Speaker 1: see the way that sis people who like would consider
- 43:20Speaker 1: themselves allies, how they would behave in the apocalypse. Like
- 43:24Speaker 1: one of the one of the main characters, you know,
- 43:28Speaker 1: has flashbacks too. When the virus first broke out, she
- 43:31Speaker 1: lived in this like queer commune house and the trans
- 43:36Speaker 1: women like eventually were kicked out of it, even and
- 43:40Speaker 1: you know, all of the people in the house were
- 43:42Speaker 1: like you know, play acted being like devastated about it,
- 43:46Speaker 1: and like we're you know, chiding them for their like
- 43:50Speaker 1: problematic reaction to it. And it's it's just like a
- 43:55Speaker 1: new take on what the world looks like when it
- 43:58Speaker 1: falls apart from a specifically not just queer perspective, but
- 44:03Speaker 1: trans perspective, and like they're just it's also extremely funny. Um,
- 44:09Speaker 1: you know, at one point they go into this like um,
- 44:12Speaker 1: you know, like trans lesbian um like camp and it's
- 44:18Speaker 1: like the one thing that survives the apocalypse is Dike drama,
- 44:21Speaker 1: which is so funny. Um it is such a Oh. Also, um,
- 44:30Speaker 1: at the end of the novel, there's this whole um
- 44:33Speaker 1: plot point of this um like ruined naval ship that
- 44:36Speaker 1: the Turfs reclaim and they rename it the gall Braith,
- 44:42Speaker 1: which is anyone who doesn't know is jk Rowling's pseudonym.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Pen names so fucking funny. So you also you also
- 44:51Speaker 1: do find out what happened to JK Rowling in the
- 44:54Speaker 1: Apocalypse and it's it's like delicious Okay, no spoilers, Okay, spoilers. Um,
- 45:01Speaker 1: let's just say her money could not protect her. And
- 45:06Speaker 1: it is really sad, moving, grotesque, hilarious, and I'm so
- 45:14Speaker 1: excited to see, um, you know, more work from the author.
- 45:18Speaker 1: And it just really invigorated me about, you know, the
- 45:22Speaker 1: future of specifically trans fiction and trans art, because it
- 45:29Speaker 1: just shows what can happen when we're allowed to tell
- 45:34Speaker 1: our own stories to each other and not worry about
- 45:39Speaker 1: you know, like the CIS gays or the CIS audience
- 45:43Speaker 1: or the CIS gay Yeah, yeah, exactly, And yeah, I
- 45:48Speaker 1: would love to hear what virgins, what you thought of it,
- 45:52Speaker 1: if you read it, if you decide to read it
- 45:54Speaker 1: after this slide into our DMS and let us know. So, wait,
- 45:57Speaker 1: sounds like a great book. We I feel like we
- 45:59Speaker 1: should have some sort of like um evaluation for Rosa's
- 46:02Speaker 1: book quarter How many out of five roses? How many
- 46:05Speaker 1: roses does it? Oh? Out of five roses? I would
- 46:07Speaker 1: get Well, I did rate it five stars on good Reads,
- 46:10Speaker 1: five out of five. But but that was like also
- 46:13Speaker 1: because I know that this author has been review bombs,
- 46:16Speaker 1: so I wanted to do my part in like getting
- 46:19Speaker 1: it up there. Um, I would say, if we're grading
- 46:22Speaker 1: it on the like a virgin Rosa's book corner spectrum,
- 46:27Speaker 1: I'm gonna say, um, eight point five out of ten roses. Oh,
- 46:32Speaker 1: we're doing out of ten? That gives you quite a scale. Yeah, Okay,
- 46:35Speaker 1: I think that's important. Okay, good love eight point five,
- 46:38Speaker 1: So it's a B plus. Maybe it's a it's an
- 46:42Speaker 1: an okay an an. Yeah. I I sounded like it
- 46:45Speaker 1: sounded like a knock out of the park. It sounds fine. Yeah,
- 46:48Speaker 1: it is fascinating. Maybe I'll learn to read one day.
- 46:52Speaker 1: And I do think I do think I have the
- 46:54Speaker 1: next book. Oh look it's right over right over your shoulder,
- 46:58Speaker 1: right there behind me a little. And so this so
- 47:00Speaker 1: I wanted to do something that is like that is
- 47:03Speaker 1: not new and is and I still want to stick
- 47:06Speaker 1: with queer literature, but um, a little a different side
- 47:11Speaker 1: of the spectrum. So this is finger Smith by Sarah Waters.
- 47:16Speaker 1: Sarah Waters is an iconic lesbian novelist. Her novel Tipping
- 47:20Speaker 1: the Velvet is one of my favorite books, possibly possibly
- 47:26Speaker 1: my favorite book. What, um, you always I've ever your
- 47:29Speaker 1: favorite book ever? Yeah? Wow? Um, but I've never read Fingersmith.
- 47:33Speaker 1: It has been adapted into a miniseries. It was also
- 47:37Speaker 1: adapted into the film The Handmaiden, which which I've never seen.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Um wait but you've never really I've never seen The Handmaiden,
- 47:46Speaker 1: but I've heard really good things about it. But apparently
- 47:48Speaker 1: the novel is very different. Um. So I started reading it,
- 47:52Speaker 1: um a couple days ago, and I'm not that far
- 47:54Speaker 1: in so again, like as as we did with Manhunt,
- 47:59Speaker 1: like maybe a month from now, we'll check in and
- 48:03Speaker 1: do you know my thoughts in Rose's book Corner? Um,
- 48:07Speaker 1: I honestly was trying to pinpoint where i'd heard Fingersmith
- 48:10Speaker 1: before Handmaid. The Handmaid is like one of my favorite
- 48:15Speaker 1: gay movies of all time period. Rose, you and I
- 48:18Speaker 1: should watch it together, we should do a virtue. Okay,
- 48:20Speaker 1: well that's well, I'll definitely watch it after I read. Yeah,
- 48:23Speaker 1: of course. And I think that'll be a really nice
- 48:25Speaker 1: way for us to talk about it in the next
- 48:28Speaker 1: installment of Rose's book Corner, because you'll be able to
- 48:30Speaker 1: speak about the adaptation, and like I'll be able to
- 48:33Speaker 1: give sort of like a counterpoint of the of the
- 48:36Speaker 1: knowledge and maybe I'll read it. Who knows? Do you
- 48:38Speaker 1: want to know something? And this, actually I'm realizing in
- 48:41Speaker 1: real time. I used to be a voracious reader. You
- 48:43Speaker 1: know this in college before I had an iPhone, Like
- 48:46Speaker 1: books where my only friends and so I used to
- 48:50Speaker 1: read all the fucking time. Do you know what killed
- 48:53Speaker 1: my love of reading? One? Entering the workforce will really
- 48:58Speaker 1: kill the imagination, really kill your spare time. Two. I
- 49:02Speaker 1: worked at random House for a year. And when you
- 49:05Speaker 1: work at a book publishing company, books are garbage. Books
- 49:09Speaker 1: are garbage you used to wipe your ass with. And
- 49:11Speaker 1: every single floor, no seriously, and every single floor of
- 49:17Speaker 1: the publishing company it has multiple bookshelves filled with free
- 49:20Speaker 1: books that I would just like, in my spare time,
- 49:22Speaker 1: wander around and collect all of these books, being like
- 49:25Speaker 1: I'm going to read these someday and like just slowly
- 49:28Speaker 1: devaluing the thing that I love most in the world,
- 49:31Speaker 1: which is books. Um. Anyways, that was Rosa's book corner
- 49:52Speaker 1: before we log off. I guess, do we want to
- 49:55Speaker 1: do a Drag Race mid season check in because we
- 49:59Speaker 1: are now we have crossed the halfway. Yeah. So I
- 50:03Speaker 1: am really liking this season. I think it's kind of
- 50:06Speaker 1: the best crop of girls we've had in a couple
- 50:09Speaker 1: of seasons of main Drag Race. I think after the
- 50:12Speaker 1: first four four we're cut out I agree, yes, um
- 50:15Speaker 1: and really bringing the interpersonal drama, which I love. Um,
- 50:20Speaker 1: which is why I wish we were getting the ninety
- 50:22Speaker 1: minute episodes and that they just like feel it feels
- 50:27Speaker 1: like we're not getting enough of the stuff that we want. Um.
- 50:30Speaker 1: And then but and you know, um, MTV recently announced
- 50:33Speaker 1: that in March, ninety minute episodes are returning, but by
- 50:36Speaker 1: that time, there's gonna be like none of them left. Yeah. Um,
- 50:39Speaker 1: at least that means more Sasha Colby lip syncing, Like
- 50:43Speaker 1: that's all I really want this. The the Lala Perusa
- 50:48Speaker 1: episode was thrilling. Um you know some some front runners
- 50:51Speaker 1: really have emerged for me. I obviously like still love
- 50:55Speaker 1: Sasha Colby and um A Nietra was one of my
- 50:58Speaker 1: early faves. I am a mistress stand first and an
- 51:02Speaker 1: American scand period period period. She's so good. What she
- 51:08Speaker 1: does is drag like drag in the most in the
- 51:14Speaker 1: most classic sense. She is old school Southern painted but
- 51:21Speaker 1: painted for the gods will fucking shade you until you
- 51:26Speaker 1: jump off a building. Drag queen. And I love it.
- 51:29Speaker 1: And I honestly think it's the first time that like
- 51:32Speaker 1: a plus sized girl who coming from that drag perspective,
- 51:36Speaker 1: Like truly I think she could win. Yeah, I I
- 51:40Speaker 1: it would be really it has actually been a while
- 51:43Speaker 1: since we had something of and I'm trying to I'm
- 51:47Speaker 1: going through the winners in my brain like something of
- 51:49Speaker 1: an old school queen, right like, like I'm thinking about
- 51:52Speaker 1: like someone like Beyond adel Rio or something like that.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Like it's it's like classic like clown paint like drag.
- 52:00Speaker 1: Sasha Colby also does a version of like classic drag,
- 52:03Speaker 1: but hers is like Toagin style, right like it's it's different,
- 52:07Speaker 1: like Mistress is captivating I think in the art and
- 52:11Speaker 1: also like I don't remember if this was in Untucked
- 52:14Speaker 1: or in one of like the debriefs, but like, I
- 52:16Speaker 1: love her story. I love that she's literally never had
- 52:19Speaker 1: another job and that she had drag as survival to
- 52:23Speaker 1: like this is all she could do to like not
- 52:25Speaker 1: be homeless. Like it painted a picture of her more
- 52:29Speaker 1: clearly and showed us. I think, what's at stake for
- 52:33Speaker 1: a competitor like her versus what's at stake for other competitors,
- 52:37Speaker 1: Not that it makes the other competitors, you know, like
- 52:40Speaker 1: not worthwhile, but like she's just it's different for her.
- 52:44Speaker 1: Drag is life for her, Drag is life. Is there
- 52:47Speaker 1: anyone else who you've who has emerged as someone you're
- 52:52Speaker 1: into or um? My Top four remains the same, Anietra, Sasha, Mistress,
- 53:03Speaker 1: and Spice. I love Spice, Spice has gotta go. I
- 53:10Speaker 1: need Spice like I need Derek Barry. I need this
- 53:13Speaker 1: woman on screen as much as possible after your a
- 53:17Speaker 1: certain point, like she really showed her ask this episode,
- 53:20Speaker 1: even though I will say her lip sync with Malaysia
- 53:25Speaker 1: was the second one. Yeah, I think Spice one. I
- 53:28Speaker 1: think Spice eight. I think Spice ate her up honestly
- 53:31Speaker 1: a little bit, But it was so long ago, I'm
- 53:33Speaker 1: trying to remember the nuances of the actual lip syncs.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Like obviously Nietra was the standout, you know, that was
- 53:42Speaker 1: that was the moment that was one of the best
- 53:45Speaker 1: lip syncs in Drag Race her story. I totally agree,
- 53:48Speaker 1: Like it's something that you would revisit, something that will
- 53:51Speaker 1: like click back on and rewatch, Like it's so thrilling
- 53:55Speaker 1: to watch Sasha perform, especially on TV now. God, I mean,
- 53:59Speaker 1: can't even say more. And to watch a Niittra perform
- 54:02Speaker 1: a Nietra just had this. She has this um like
- 54:06Speaker 1: fluidity and grace to her um and you can definitely
- 54:10Speaker 1: see like she's so Vegas, like she's such a show
- 54:14Speaker 1: girl and that and so is Sasha, And like I
- 54:18Speaker 1: love seeing that kind of drag be praised on this platform.
- 54:23Speaker 1: And I'm just very excited by this cast after like
- 54:28Speaker 1: I don't know, a couple of seasons of like sure
- 54:30Speaker 1: having a few standouts here and there, but I think
- 54:32Speaker 1: this is a very solid cast all the way through.
- 54:35Speaker 1: They have good drama, and the challenges have been really
- 54:40Speaker 1: good and um yeah, I'm I'm enjoying the ride. We'll
- 54:44Speaker 1: see how we feel after we watch I don't know,
- 54:46Speaker 1: two more months of two more two or three more
- 54:48Speaker 1: months of this? Yeah okay? Um another midseason check in
- 54:52Speaker 1: the Last of Us. Did you watch? Did you watch
- 54:54Speaker 1: Sunday Yesterday's episode or Sunday's episode? I did? Um. It
- 54:58Speaker 1: was so happy to see Routina West from True Blood
- 55:02Speaker 1: back on HBO because my girl Tara stand for Life,
- 55:07Speaker 1: which which character was that she was his brother's wife,
- 55:11Speaker 1: the one who was pregnant. Oh okay, who gave Ellie
- 55:15Speaker 1: the Diva cup? That was I love. I loved moments
- 55:20Speaker 1: like that. That was so funny. Um. I love the
- 55:23Speaker 1: heart that the show continues to build, like, I love
- 55:26Speaker 1: their relationship. Um. Yes, And I liked that there was
- 55:30Speaker 1: a little bit of the passage of time because I
- 55:34Speaker 1: think we needed that. I think we needed them like
- 55:36Speaker 1: further solidified into their dynamic, especially after what happened at
- 55:40Speaker 1: the end of last week's episode, which was so traumatic,
- 55:44Speaker 1: you know, like traumatic and jarring, and you know, I
- 55:49Speaker 1: think it was really cool to see. I mean, Pedro
- 55:52Speaker 1: Pascale is such an incredible actor, and that scene where
- 55:56Speaker 1: he broke down and like finally kind of confessed that
- 56:01Speaker 1: he really cares about this person and like and doesn't
- 56:05Speaker 1: want to fail her. And the parallels of her and
- 56:09Speaker 1: his daughter is really heart wrenching. And you know this,
- 56:14Speaker 1: you know, if you watch the inside the episodes that
- 56:17Speaker 1: Atrio does after the episodes, like they talk a lot
- 56:19Speaker 1: about how this show is ultimately about the ways in
- 56:23Speaker 1: which the different ways in which love destroys people, and
- 56:27Speaker 1: I think this was like such every episode is a
- 56:30Speaker 1: great example of that, but this one was, you know,
- 56:33Speaker 1: so fascinating on the writing and the acting level. That
- 56:39Speaker 1: like scene with Pedro Pascal like is just it's so
- 56:42Speaker 1: I'm always in awe of like actors who portray, for
- 56:46Speaker 1: lack of a better word, like emotionally stunted people because
- 56:50Speaker 1: to act emotion like through this like huge wall that
- 56:53Speaker 1: this character has built up, it's like, yeah, you just
- 56:56Speaker 1: like have to watch every second of it. It's so
- 56:58Speaker 1: so fun to watch. Patrovisk is about to become so
- 57:03Speaker 1: much more famous, Like he is going to be booked
- 57:05Speaker 1: and busy. Also, the guy who plays his brother is
- 57:10Speaker 1: so hot and so hot to see them kiss. Oh
- 57:13Speaker 1: you know what. My favorite moment from the most recent
- 57:16Speaker 1: episode after they have their huge argument, which is like,
- 57:19Speaker 1: to me, that was the moment that stuck out to
- 57:21Speaker 1: me as like where they're just like they're crying and
- 57:23Speaker 1: screaming at each other or whatever, and he you know,
- 57:27Speaker 1: shows up the next morning and he's like, listen, you
- 57:30Speaker 1: can make a choice, and she just cuts him off
- 57:32Speaker 1: and she's like, okay, let's go. So fucking good like
- 57:37Speaker 1: it was, I laughed out loud. It's so satisfying, a
- 57:42Speaker 1: great writing, great storytelling. I also loved the scene where
- 57:45Speaker 1: he goes back to the house they're staying at and
- 57:47Speaker 1: I guess that scene is directed is I guess that
- 57:51Speaker 1: scene is lifted directly from the game, and they were
- 57:53Speaker 1: incredibly faithful to it. But I especially love that it's
- 57:59Speaker 1: taking place in this house, in this you know, bedroom
- 58:02Speaker 1: of a teenager who probably died twenty years ago, and
- 58:07Speaker 1: it like mirrors um a fight between a father and
- 58:11Speaker 1: a daughter, but it's like they're this different version of that,
- 58:15Speaker 1: and it's just fantastic storytelling. It's so good. And I
- 58:21Speaker 1: just like, Pedro Pascual, sit on my face, Sit on
- 58:25Speaker 1: my face. After this gift was shared with a huge ass,
- 58:28Speaker 1: Oh my god, little little booty bump. I haven't even
- 58:33Speaker 1: watched the interview, so I don't know the context of
- 58:34Speaker 1: the booty bue, but like damn that it doesn't matter.
- 58:37Speaker 1: Context doesn't matter. And I also didn't realize I can't
- 58:41Speaker 1: remember which podcast clue me into this. Um oh it
- 58:44Speaker 1: was Last Culture. Um, I didn't know that Pedro was
- 58:47Speaker 1: the buy one from Game of Thrones. You didn't know
- 58:52Speaker 1: I watched Game of Thrones in like a in a
- 58:56Speaker 1: haze Lucid dreamstay yeah, yeah, yeah, Um that's crazy. Elavender Hayes.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Oh God, I shouldn't have brought her up. How dare
- 59:06Speaker 1: you so? Um? Catch up with us on Like a
- 59:18Speaker 1: Virgin four twenty sixty nine. Tell us, um, what what
