- 2:00Larry Moore is going to join us. We're still kind of weighing everything from
- 2:02this past Monday night city council meeting, and council in war was one of
- 2:07those. There was a no vote on the issue of the latest needle program
- 2:12here in Charleston. The one who was being discussed, he was a no
- 2:15vote on that and he wanted a little time to explain that, and we're
- 2:16gonna have him on the show a little bit later on. Also, more
- 2:20economic development news coming out in West Virginia in our state Economic Director Secretary I
- 2:23think is the actual title. Amidst. Carmichael is going to join this a
- 2:28little bit later on as well. But before we get to all that,
- 2:30I have a little fun this morning. You know, it's fun when you
- 2:32do this, Julie. I don't know why. It's a girls night out
- 2:37and it is happening this Saturday night, only a few days away at the
- 2:40coliseum and convention sitter. Julie, how are you? I'm great, awesome,
- 2:45Thanks for having me, Thank you for being here, Thank you for
- 2:46making the rounds here at the radio ranches we call this morning. So you're
- 2:51hanging out with Stephen Jenny a little bit earlier this morning talking about girls night
- 2:53out. From those that may not be familiar with us. Number one,
- 2:58how many years. Has this been going on at least twenty closer to twenty
- 3:01five and it's this Saturday night the Collossy we give Age Center. So what
- 3:06exactly goes on in Girls Night Out? What's the whole concept? Okay?
- 3:07So it is a we call it the Party with the Purpose and it's a
- 3:13fundraiser for the YWCA's Resolve Family Abuse program. We're the domestic violence services provider
- 3:21for Canal, Boone and Clay Counties. We serve about two thousand people a
- 3:24year with all sorts of things, from long term housing to short term emergency
- 3:34shelter. We are the first, and we won't be the only, but
- 3:38we are the first pet friendly domestic violence shelter in the States. So we
- 3:44have four individual little pet apartments where people can bring their pets with them while
- 3:49they're fleeing. We serve everyone regardless of gender. We also have court advocacy
- 3:54in all three of those counties, so we can help people fill out those
- 3:59domestic violence petitions. We do counseling, support group and we do some education
- 4:04in the schools about healthy relationships and healthy boundaries. So we aren't always just
- 4:13working after the fact. We're really trying to make some positive changes that the
- 4:16next generation. If I could just jump in here one second, that's something
- 4:19that I learned when I started having you on the show to talk about this
- 4:23is one of the things that your organization does, is that preventative maintenance.
- 4:28As they say in your Car. I don't know, that's probably not the
- 4:30right term for people, but did you understand what I'm saying is planning that
- 4:32seed early on, because sometimes after the fact and they become adults and it
- 4:38becomes a way of life, especially when you factor in that they saw mommy
- 4:41and daddy going out, they saw the grandparents or you know, whatever going
- 4:44on. You get them early. Exactly does an education look like when you
- 4:48go into so it looks like so many different things. It can be a
- 4:51one time we go into the schools and talk to kids about domestic violence and
- 4:57also realizing that domestic violence isn't just intimate partner violence. It's also that family
- 5:03violence where you have abuse towards kids and we're asking kids to reach out to
- 5:12a safe person. But what if that safe person isn't in your household?
- 5:15Right? What do you do? Then? There are a lot of secrets
- 5:17that kids have to keep when there's violence in the house and it's gotten I
- 5:21mean, this has been going this sort of thing, Julie has been going
- 5:25on since the beginning of time. We all know that. But when you
- 5:29throw in the drug crisis and you throw in this, you know, all
- 5:31the situations that kids have to deal with now that you and I at our
- 5:35ages couldn't even think about when we were when we were growing up, it's
- 5:40a it's a totally different ball game now with absolutely bullying, and so two
- 5:45of the things we see on the increase are bullying and stalking. You know,
- 5:51when when you look at stalking back in the day, you actually had
- 5:55to get in a vehicle and go somewhere and drive by somebody's house. But
- 5:59stalking is so easy now and it's so different than what it used to be,
- 6:01and the criminal justice system hasn't kept up with that. So talking with
- 6:08kids a lot about their online presence and how make how there's a very subtle
- 6:15shift between someone knowing where you are because they're worried about you, and then
- 6:23someone knowing having to know where you are all of the time because they have
- 6:30other ideas that you are now their person or they own you. And so
- 6:35we also talked to kids about healthy boundaries. What a boundary means. I
- 6:43mean, that's something you know people through the word boundaries around all the time
- 6:46now, but what does that mean? And then we have some longer weekly
- 6:55projects that we do with the kids in the schools. We've been in Riverside
- 7:00quite a bit. They've been incredibly receptive to what we do and have offered
- 7:04it and continue to offer it all the time to any of the schools in
- 7:08all the counties that we serve. So again, what it can be a
- 7:12one off or it could be a whole dating violence prevention going in and talking
- 7:17with kids. And then we also provide bystander intervention because there are a lot
- 7:26of people that want to step in when they see violence happening and sometimes and
- 7:30that's not always safe, right, There's a there's a way to do it
- 7:34where it was safe because quite often somebody who intervenes is going to be that
- 7:39person that ends up getting hurt. We're talking with Julie Britten and back Girls
- 7:42Night Out and again I wanted to get this kind of the some of the
- 7:45things that they do because it is a party with the purpose, as you
- 7:48call it, and people do show up for this big event at the Kyles
- 7:51Sema Convention Center and they have a great time, but we do want to
- 7:55know that they're that they're there for a reason. And when you're out there
- 7:58raising you know these fine we want to know where those funds are being spent.
- 8:03Now, this has become one of really the Canal Valley's premiere events.
- 8:07When you start thinking about and I've done this show now for three years,
- 8:11and when you start thinking about, Okay, these are the big events in
- 8:13the Charleston area and the Canal Valley, and you start thinking about things like
- 8:16where God are you start thinking about this and these things. This is and
- 8:20has men Julie one of those things for some time. That is one of
- 8:24the premiere events, one of the top five six things that people look forward
- 8:26to every year. Absolutely, and we at the why we are so privileged
- 8:30to be that. You know, there are so many people that are out
- 8:33there doing great work. We happen to be one of them. And we
- 8:39have amazing support from this community. I couldn't ask for more. So we
- 8:45whenever we have a need or a want, people show up for it.
- 8:48But the Girls' Night out, where else can you get twelve hundred women out
- 8:54supporting the work that we do and each other and have a safe space,
- 9:01tons of great food, signature cocktails, an amazing auction, and just the
- 9:07ambiance and the decorations. It's a I mean, at this point we're going
- 9:13back in time. Yeah, yeah, so we are doing the theme is
- 9:18the Roaring twenties do the Charleston and I love people and these I know.
- 9:26Yeah, No, there was a there was a herd of us that that
- 9:30came up with that. That wasn't my only brain child. I wish it
- 9:33was, but it wasn't. And so to be able to see everybody,
- 9:39I mean just show up embracing the theme and just living it up for four
- 9:46or five hours, like, it's absolutely amazing. We have partners with two
- 9:54work with people to get everybody home safely, you know, lifts and ubers
- 9:58and all of that. We will have stations set up so you don't have
- 10:03to worry about that. But what I love is the number of partners who
- 10:07drop their girlfriends and wives off and then are like, hey, go have
- 10:11a great time. I'll be back to pick you up. It's amazing.
- 10:15That's now. What is the ticket situation looking like now? Is we're just
- 10:18you know, seventy two hours or so away. Well, so we are.
- 10:22We are absolutely still selling tickets. We'll sell them up until the you
- 10:26know, up until the time. Uh, they're one available at the door,
- 10:31absolutely at the door, available, what times the doors open, doors
- 10:35open at six, Okay, two hundred dollars at the door. We are.
- 10:41So it'll be online ticketing, it'll be on your phone, and then
- 10:43we will give folks we need to check IDs and give folks wristbands and then
- 10:48that's all they'll need to enter for food, all the food. And I
- 10:52do want to bring that up about the ID because I overheard a conversation that
- 10:56you are having earlier in the green room with one of my co workers here
- 11:00that there is an early check in or there was a question about that you
- 11:03have to you have and we say this to the ladies, and I'm gonna
- 11:07go out on a limb and wait and mint. I don't know what I'm
- 11:09talking about here, but when it comes. You know, sometimes women when
- 11:13they go out, they don't want to necessarily carry a big purse with them,
- 11:16or they just want to just take the bare minimums in with them.
- 11:18You gotta have your ID, absolutely everyone will be I d So, ladies,
- 11:22don't leave it in the car, don't leave it at home, don't
- 11:24leave it with your significant other that drop you off or whatever. You must
- 11:28bring your photo ID in order to get in, no matter how old you
- 11:31are, right, absolutely got to bring your photo ID. Just put it.
- 11:35Nobody leaves without their phone. Slip in your phone case. Bring it.
- 11:39There you go, Yeah, there you go. And so tickets will
- 11:41be available at the door. And where can people go online and get them?
- 11:43Between now and them g n ow V, dot com, dot org.
- 11:48I'm sorry, one of them dots, you know, just just just
- 11:54use your Google you'll be able to find. It's gonna be a great night.
- 11:58It always is. And again it's at the Kyle Sea and Convention Center.
- 12:01And that theme of the nineteen twenty you see to doin the Charleston And
- 12:03approximately how many are you expecting? Again you threw out a number earlier,
- 12:07aproximate And I would love I mean so that so we do use listen.
- 12:16Here's our thing. We realize that while women are ninety six percent of those
- 12:26have used, it does happen to men. But it's really important to me
- 12:31as a program director that we have guys helping out and being allies and taking
- 12:37part in this. So we have men volunteers. They're greeters, they're helping
- 12:41to serve signature cocktails. They're just really make we call them ambassadors. They're
- 12:48just making sure the women have a have a great night there. And it's
- 12:52so important for us as women to see that they're there are good guys out
- 12:58there. Well. I have mental and staff that we've hired and they're amazing
- 13:01people who absolutely want to do that hard work and be that ally ship.
- 13:07So we I'm sure folks can still sign up on GNO w V to b
- 13:13ambassadors if they want to come, if guys want to come and help out,
- 13:18Indeed, it's gonna be a great night. Girls Night Out is this
- 13:20Saturday night at the Kittles Seam Convention Center. Julie as always a pleasure to

- 16:36later on in the show, Charleston Citycouncimant Larry Moore is going to join us
- 16:38want to welcome to the show. Now the West Virginia Economic Development Secretary,
- 16:41Mitch Carmichael. Good morning, sir, how are you. I'm great,
- 16:45Dave, good morning, how are you. I'm fine. Thank you for
- 16:48being here. I know you've got a busy schedule, lots going on,
- 16:49so I want to make this kind of quick for you. I know,
- 16:53Mitch, you've been chris crossing the state as of late making economic development project
- 16:59announcements. Well, get to those soon. But before we get to that,
- 17:02I want to talk about something else, and that is a in any
- 17:07true conversation, Mitch about economic development, this has to be mentioned. And
- 17:11of course I'm talking about broadband. After years of promises, broken promises in
- 17:18some cases, it looks like it's finally going to happen here in the Mountain
- 17:22state. Finally some comprehensive broadband coverage for the entire state of West Virginia,
- 17:26I mean the entire area. It looks like we're gonna make this thing happen,
- 17:30Mitch, talk about them. We are absolutely going to make this happen.
- 17:34The governor, Governor Justice and his administration have put forth incredible emphasis on
- 17:40expanding broadband to every West Virginia citizen, and fortunately there are some federal programs
- 17:47that we're taking advantage of. Currently. Many people your listeners probably heard of
- 17:52the large federal grant that West Virginia one based upon our great program that we
- 18:00already have in place, and many of your listeners will know that that they're
- 18:03all read. We're already well underway to expanding broadband throughout West Virginia. We
- 18:08have probably around our mapping data is so accurate, we have around two hundred
- 18:15and seventy thousand addresses in West Virginias that do not have adequate broadband services.
- 18:22And so our programs are one hundred percent focused on reaching the unserved and the
- 18:27underserved locations, and we're just we're making them happen in a big, fast
- 18:36way. And metcha someone who has served the people in the public for some
- 18:40time. You know yourself as a legislator or in private business, and in
- 18:44this relatively new role for you, This sort of announcement, when these announcements
- 18:48come out about this broadband has got to make you happy. Oh, this
- 18:52is such an and critical component for economic development and for the future of our
- 18:57state and West Virginia. As you know and all your listeners will acknowledge the
- 19:02fact that broadband is a necessary component of a twenty first century economy and society.
- 19:08And Dave, I mean the things that we talk about and we perhaps
- 19:12take for granted, shopping online, our healthcare, of ability to do tele
- 19:19medicine, remote or distance learning that we saw how important that was during the
- 19:25pandemic, as well as remote work. So everything centers around the connectivity of
- 19:32our citizens to the outside world from a Internet perspective. Furthermore, I'll highlight
- 19:38this. I've said this over and over that this new economy, West Virginia's
- 19:44poised to benefit in this scenario to a greater extent than perhaps any other state
- 19:49because these traditional barriers of our mountains and difficult terrain and so forth are now
- 19:56becoming like these welcome signs to the outside world to say we want to be
- 20:00a part of this, We want to come to West Virginia, but we
- 20:04absolutely have to have broadband connectivity. And it is it amazes me. Mentioned
- 20:10We'll move on to something else that amazes me that we have people that still
- 20:14say they don't maybe understand the importance of broadband for economic development. This is
- 20:19the electricity, the water, the sewer, etc. Of one hundred years
- 20:25ago without quality broadband. And I'm talking from a business standpoint right now.
- 20:30We can get to residential at some other point, but I'm talking about business
- 20:32without it. There's no business being conducted in West Virginia at all. Yeah,
- 20:36right, And every company that we recruit to our state just assumes that
- 20:41you're going to have broadband. And I'll give credit to Senator Capito who's done
- 20:45such a great job in leading the efforts, and Senator Mansion as well,
- 20:48but Senator Capito in particular with her capital connect and then Governor Justice has from
- 20:53the second took this role and he began his administration, he said, look,
- 21:00we've got to have world class broadband services throughout our state. And we've
- 21:07got a great team here in place at our Development Office that he's allowed us
- 21:11to really put forth programs that are moving the needs in our state. We've
- 21:15had already over the last several years about one hundred and twenty thousand new fiber
- 21:22optic connections in our state, and we're quickly rolling out programs that are going
- 21:27to have a ubiquitous network in our state that everyone is connected. Talking to
- 21:33Mitch Carmichael again, the Westvinin Economic Development Secretary. I want to move on
- 21:38to some other announcements, and there's been so many. I mean, you
- 21:41start with New Core, and I saw a story on television this morning about
- 21:45some of the roadwork that we're doing now down in that area getting ready for
- 21:49New Core, the road expansion and the green bus facility in South Charleston.
- 21:55More things coming out for the panhandles an announcement, I think it is coming
- 21:59soon. There was a story in the paper and we reported on A two
- 22:02about this hydrogen plant in Mason County. There's a lot of big stuff going
- 22:06on in the Mountain state. Match. No, you're you're not kiddy.
- 22:10This has been the greatest time of economic growth in our in my from my
- 22:15perspective, in our state's history. We've added so many jobs to our payrolls.
- 22:22From the low of our pandemic, uh you know, layoffs and so
- 22:25forth, we've come basically all the way back. And we've added incredible world
- 22:30class companies to our portfolio of corporate citizens in our state. And you mentioned
- 22:34one in New Chord. Then we have Berkshire half away in Ravenswood. We
- 22:41have as you mentioned, the green Power motor company, pure Watercraft, commercial
- 22:45medals, form Energy. I could go on and on and on. In
- 22:48fact, from I was watching South Carolina's economic announcements, the governor was standing
- 22:56up there saying, we got ten billion dollars in announcements in the state of
- 23:02South Carolina in the year twenty twenty two. And I looked at what we
- 23:06did, and we did in West Virginia six point two billion dollars of investments.
- 23:11Now it's not ten, but it's way more than what we've ever done
- 23:15in the past. And these are we're nipping at the hills of our competing
- 23:22states with great and people want to be here. I mean, we have
- 23:26put the policies in place, in the leadership in place, and the governor's
- 23:30a great coach on these teams. He has good instinct for it, and
- 23:34it's just it's clicking on all cylinders. And we could we have more and
- 23:38more and more coming to West Virginia. And we have a great workforce that
- 23:45and just a perfect geographic area, great assets that these business communities can come
- 23:52here, locate, grow and expand their business and help our society prosper.
- 24:00Bitch, when when you're courting and talking to some of these other companies about
- 24:04possibly coming here. What do you tell them? You mentioned the broadband thing,
- 24:10which we're working on hopefully going to get to take care. But what
- 24:11do you tell perspective companies when they're looking to come to West Virginia about this?
- 24:17What are some of the selling points that you tell them about the actual
- 24:19people here. Yeah, well, we have a what I would refer to
- 24:22as a value proposition that we bring forth to place before these prospects, and
- 24:27the value proposition encompasses a lot of different things about four or five main points.
- 24:33Though we are perfectly located in the Eastern time zone in a geography that
- 24:40allows for us to drive a five hundred mile radius around. West Virginia takes
- 24:45in fifty percent of America's population and thirty percent of the Canadian population. So
- 24:51these companies want to be now close to their suppliers and close to their customers
- 24:57and West Virginia's perfec for that location. Furthermore, we have a data point
- 25:03here that I didn't realize that the federal government attracts, but the customer or
- 25:07clients love when they hear West Virginia has the most loyal workforce in America.
- 25:15In other words, when one of our citizens gets a good job and a
- 25:18factory or an advanced manufacturing plant that we're bringing to our state, they maintain
- 25:25that position at a higher rate than any place else in America. And when
- 25:30those companies here that day, they're like, wow, turnover costs me a
- 25:33lot of money, and I want that loyalty and that, you know,
- 25:38sort of that small town attitude about keeping a job and knowing that it makes
- 25:45a difference in a person's life. So that's a big point. And then
- 25:48second is our community and technical college education system. We and the governor has
- 25:55the Jobs for Hope for Jobs program that those who are had been previously maybe
- 26:03through addiction or so forth, had gotten on the wrong track, and they
- 26:07rehabilitate those citizens and are able to place them in great jobs. And then
- 26:12West Virginia has a program called West Virginia and Vest that will train and your
- 26:18listeners need to know this. We will train any citizen of West Virginia and
- 26:23our community and Technical college system at zero cost. And so businesses here that
- 26:30and they say, g is, you guys are making a real commitment to
- 26:33the workforce. You've got a great location, you've got a good tax structure,
- 26:37judicial system is in line, and your physical houses in order. Those
- 26:42are the kind of places they want to locate, and we feel like we
- 26:45can deliver that message better than anybody. All Right, I know you gotta
- 26:49go. But to final thirty seconds here, Mitch, what's on the horizon.
- 26:53Can you give us a little hint about anything coming in the future.
- 26:56Well, I guess I really want to focus on what now. It's impacting
- 27:00the people of West Virginia with these programs that we're rolling out in terms of
- 27:04broadband connectivity. So all of the people that have currently have broadband, you
- 27:10will be seeing some perhaps some upgrades to your service as well as those who
- 27:15do not have it. That's our complete focus of our program is to get
- 27:18to those who do not have world class broadband services, and so your state
- 27:23government is committed to ensuring world class service throughout West Virginia. Mitch is always
- 27:30a pleasure to talk to you. Keep doing good things. We'll talk again
- 27:33soon. Thanks a lot, Dave, Thank you so much. That's what's

- 31:32comes in and he's in the green room and I bring him in and I'm
- 31:34kind of going on what we're gonna talk about, and he just goes automatically,
- 31:37just starts talking about Dave, I gotta save it for the air man,
- 31:41save it for the air. But you're a passionate guy. Yeah,
- 31:44I am. It's just you for a neighborhood man. And the people that
- 31:47I represent that voted for me, the they entrusted their votes for me to
- 31:51fight for him. So that's all. I look at it, and I
- 31:52want to I want to get in right to it. It was a long,
- 31:56long discussion city council Monday night. I think the discussion on this particular
- 32:00issue with the needles that was like two and a half hours. I think
- 32:05itself, I think if I understand correctly, But in the end, you
- 32:07know, the council was asked to approve of this needle program through the Women's
- 32:12Health Center and Charleston public meeting was held, of course week or so ago
- 32:15week or two speakers on both sides of the argument from the public spoke Monday
- 32:17night. Council members spoke, but in the end it was the nose that
- 32:22won out. And you were one of those nos. Why, sir,
- 32:23well, I was representing my people and the people who have called me,
- 32:28because like the thing of it is is that a lot of my residents,
- 32:30we've lived in a neighborhood fifty sixty years, and they felt a second class
- 32:34citizens. And a lot of people that want to come to the West Side
- 32:37won't live on the West Side, but they always have an idea about the
- 32:38West Side. They don't ever come and talk to the people. They just
- 32:43kind of treat us our second class citizens. And they felt that way.
- 32:45I mean, it was to a point like when the first one happened,
- 32:47I wouldn't even see the council yet they nobody ever came door to door acts
- 32:52how do y'all feel about this? And they just popped up and why do
- 32:54you think that is? Larry interrupt, What do you think they know?
- 32:57Because what it is is a stigma about the West Side. You know,
- 33:00we're just that we're one demographic of people, one type of you know,
- 33:06But the West side of a cosmopolitan society. Man, there's Republicans, there's
- 33:08Democrats's independence the west side. It's a mixture of people. And until you
- 33:14need to go over there and talk to the people first, and don't assume
- 33:16what somebody tells you without talking to the people. And we have this big
- 33:20haze on the west side that it's just this way now, it's just this
- 33:22way, but it's not. It's still people who've been living there for sixty
- 33:25seventy years man, and younger people that want to move there. But you
- 33:30don't ask us how they feel about, well, what should go in their
- 33:32neighborhood. But now you are somebody, and I've done you for some time
- 33:37later, you're somebody that does talk to your constituents. And when when when
- 33:39this issue first came out, you and and other council members too, you
- 33:45spent time talking to your constituents. What did what did they say to you?
- 33:47Well, it asks me about it first, and I told them like
- 33:50they were doing a horn program and that the people were all for the narc
- 33:53hand give outs, the counseling and the count an. When't care, don't
- 34:00care, and people were there, they're they're still for that. You know,
- 34:01people were for that, but just they have a bad taste because with
- 34:05the first time the first needles changed that happened, it brought a lot of
- 34:08unsheltered people because most people that are fighting addiction were on sheltered So our neighborhood
- 34:12got indicted with like like the houses were getting broke into people's stuff, We're
- 34:16getting scuffed porches, the house fires, and just like the overabundance of like
- 34:21unsheltered people because you know they were you know, most time you're fighting addiction,
- 34:23a lot of people are unsheltered, and our neighborhoods got flooded. But
- 34:27just like certain things that were happening to our elderly residents were scared to leave
- 34:30the doors open and stuff. And this is people who were calling me.
- 34:34They was just like they told us one thing and it always changes to be
- 34:37something different. So these have a bad taste in their mouth. They don't
- 34:39feel that when you tell them something, it's not gonna be what you promised.
- 34:43And this seems to be and this is a bigger societal issue. Again,
- 34:45we're talking with Charleston City councilor larity more. And I've seen this happen
- 34:49in other areas too. Sometimes people maybe in their heart they have they want
- 34:53to do good for other people, but they come into areas that they don't
- 34:59know, they don't understand, and they're trying to tell you what you're facing
- 35:02and you don't one that's living there. Yeah. Yeah, and then they
- 35:07kind of make you a villain if you don't agree with them. They'll be
- 35:08like they'll tell people you don't want to help people. No, No,
- 35:13that's not the that's not it at all the West Side. If you know
- 35:15anybody from the West Side, that's we are the most loving type community man.
- 35:20And like I even said myself in the meeting, I wish I would
- 35:22come when we need a grocery store where all y'all at, when we need
- 35:25to help these grade schools and middle schools with these kids in our test scores.
- 35:29But it's not. When it only affects them your need or your want,
- 35:34you don't really care about the whole community. Like my my job is
- 35:36the whole community. And I'm like, I'm my my job is to make
- 35:39sure that everybody in my awards t't care of and I mean, even the
- 35:44people that are fighting addictions, we still said we were about them getting the
- 35:46nark can, which to me, the narc can is the most important thing
- 35:50because this fit nailed out here and that's killing people. They need this nark
- 35:52candon whatever the other I can't think of the name of the other. Well,
- 35:57no, no, the other like the nark cans stuff that helps them
- 36:00when the od we're not saying, don't get that out, but they will
- 36:02make it seem like you were just like you're not against them, you just
- 36:05don't want to help anybody. It's not that that's not the case, but
- 36:07we're just like, y'all come and just help us with everything. Don't just
- 36:12come for your own personal agenda, but don't come in the neighborhood. Talk
- 36:15to people, like help the little leagues and that'll help the after school programs
- 36:17we have over there. Help people over there. We're trying to get people
- 36:20to be on homeowners generational wealth. We need that help. But just come
- 36:23for your own agenda. And if we don't agree with your agenda, it
- 36:27shows how much you really care about our neighborhood. Because when we don't agree
- 36:30with you, you villainize this and you disappear and we don't see you anymore.
- 36:32What do you think the agenda is? I mean, why why would
- 36:36people of that are pushing this in this neighborhood that obviously some there are some
- 36:42I'm sure they wanted, but but why is it? What is in your
- 36:45opinion, Larry, is what is the agenda of these folks? Well,
- 36:47I think they want to help people, and what it is is that they've
- 36:50been struck with that addiction, most of them have. But they sometimes get
- 36:53blindly caught up in their vision. They don't think taking account of everybody else
- 36:58in the neighborhood and everybody else's needs and wants. And sometimes when you you
- 37:02know they've some people this human nature when you want something and your focus is
- 37:07only that one thing, and you don't think about everybody else and everybody else's
- 37:10I wants the needs or this secondary to yours, And like everybody wants to
- 37:15help people. We're not saying no help people, but you gotta take into
- 37:17the whole community how it affects everybody, like from the homeowners to the kids
- 37:22walk into school every day like you got grown people out the asking kids for
- 37:24money like dollars and stuff, and like I remember a few years ago,
- 37:27I had a parent at the West Side Middle School. She called me and
- 37:30was like, can you maybe have a police patrol more when the kids walk
- 37:34into school? Just because And I understand that, but people don't want to
- 37:36see that because they then they think you're a bad person. It's not that
- 37:38man. You gotta take care of everybody. What have you heard from your
- 37:42constituent since the meeting Monday night? A lot of them just like you know,
- 37:45they hope that they still do the like the wound care stuff and then
- 37:49our can and they're just like, you know, just keep just keep fighting
- 37:52for our neighborhood in our community. Just thank you, just like you know,
- 37:54and just keep doing what's right. Again, we'll talk about city councilor
- 37:59and Larry More and not putting words in your mouths, sir, But do
- 38:02you feel that the West Side seems to get picked on a lot more or
- 38:07maybe get some bad breaks from people who think that they're doing good. What
- 38:10it is is that we are like the people in the neighborhood or treat like
- 38:14second class citizens sometimes like our voices are not heard and people assume what they
- 38:17like, what they think should be done, but they don't really talk to
- 38:21the people, and then if they do something, it comes in. It's
- 38:24like Africa, Debra, it changes up. So like we I mean,
- 38:28I feel like we really are because I mean, like like I said earlier,
- 38:30we don't have grocery stores. We have all kind of issues going on,
- 38:35but people only focus on what they want to focus on and the true
- 38:37issues we have, like we need homeownership over there, our schools or get
- 38:40a bad rep because we need families to move in our neighborhoods. But that
- 38:43stuff gets pushed back for your own personal agenda because you don't come talk to
- 38:46the people, and our people feel slighted. I mean, I have people
- 38:49who live in the neighborood for sixty seven years and they like, man,
- 38:52we feel like second class citizens in our own neighborhood at times. What does
- 38:55the west I mean you talk about what the west Side needs, You mentioned
- 38:59girltre stores and these other things, but how do we how do we get
- 39:02there? Man? I just think like we just gotta just keep being vigilant
- 39:07in the right programs and right people come in with the right ideas and this
- 39:09you gotta galvanize and just talk to the people and find out what they really
- 39:14need. Now we have some things coming along that I've been speaking to a
- 39:16few people, hopefully it will come. And just talk to the people in
- 39:20the neighborhood, I mean everybody. You can't just talk to a certain group
- 39:23of people, like I can't just talk to people that I hang with or
- 39:27that we have the same thought of me, because you'll never grow as a
- 39:29person, So you have to always be diverse. Talk to every I mean
- 39:32I think, like I'll talk to the person even at the homeless gown on
- 39:37the street. I'll talk to him, like I give a guy pack of
- 39:38sucks, just talk to him. And I found out he wasn't even from
- 39:42Charleston, but he got on this down on his luck, and I just
- 39:44you know, you gotta talk to everybody, find their needs and to help
- 39:46him out. I want to address that before we let you go, because
- 39:50some of them, Again, you can't paint everybody at the same brush.
- 39:52But there have been certain people that have pushed these agendas over the year that
- 39:57say that it's a myth that people come to Charleston just for these services,
- 40:00or in your case, that people come to the West Side just for these
- 40:05services. You're saying that's not a myth that it actually happens. Well,
- 40:07a lot of people they do. Cause like it's you go to the services
- 40:10or is this people, you're gonna go where the services or for you?
- 40:15If you if I'm hungry and you're giving out free food downtown, I'm gonna
- 40:17go eat at the free spot downtown. It's just wherever your need is.
- 40:21You're gonna go to where the needs at. So if I open up like
- 40:23I said, if I got a hundred spots, I'm giving our free socks
- 40:28and I'm gonna give our freestocks down by the mall. People don't go to
- 40:30the mall. This is about where you put stuff at. That's what's gonna
- 40:34drop. The location of people, that's all it is. And people are
- 40:36gonna come to where they need they need help. That's just how it is.
- 40:38Give me some positive things getting away from the subject. Give me some
- 40:42positive things going on on the West Side right now. Well, you know,
- 40:45we got a HULP project coming up, a Councilwomen for They Help Dad
- 40:49coming through. Then we got a book bag giveaway this Saturday, and Second
- 40:52Avenue Community Center that's going on. Uh, we got a lot of things
- 40:55that are going down just like you know, people are starting to gathering outs
- 40:59on the West Side. Like a lot of businesses go over support, like
- 41:00the old West Washington Street district, a lot of unbusiness over there. My
- 41:05buddy Don Wilson has his Capital insurance over there. You go check him out.
- 41:08We got just like things, there's things going on on the West Side.
- 41:10We're just trying to We're just trying to build back up and the people
- 41:14over there. We've got great people over there, man. We just want
- 41:15to see the West Side be great, you know, and just be the
- 41:19community that I remember growing up and people always talking about, oh, you
- 41:22know, things change, but being a neighborhood and having families and stuff that
- 41:25should never change. That should something that should always be timeless, you know,
- 41:29because when you bring people in your neighborhood families, it changes the grade
- 41:32schools, it changes the middle schools, it changes everything, and it gets
- 41:36pride into your neighborhood. And that's what we're trying to do. Just get
- 41:37that back. If you could talk to your buddy Don Wilson about his choice
- 41:39of football teams, that would be that would be good. There's something you
- 41:43can I'm just I'm picking ima you text messes later, Larry, It's always
- 41:49a pleasure to talk to you, man, because I mean, you're one
- 41:51of the good guys out here. Uh you know that that that's doing good
- 41:53things. And and you're not doing it to get your picture in the paper.
- 41:58That's not why you're And there's others out there like you that are doing

- 45:16Cross Lanes. Follow up to my interview there with Councilman Larry Moore. You
- 45:21know, like I said, I'm at Larry a couple of years ago and
- 45:22I first started doing this job, and he's appointed to city council. Then
- 45:24he ran and he won. I mean, Larry is one of the good
- 45:28guys that's out there, and Larry and I don't, you know, there's
- 45:30a couple of things he said I don't necessarily agree with, but he's he's
- 45:34a good dude, And there is nobody I don't think they're going to find
- 45:37that cares for their community as much as what Larry Moore and others do for
- 45:42that community. And sometimes people may they go in, maybe they got some
- 45:45ideas to help, but they don't always help, and they don't always talk
- 45:49to the people that live there. And this was something that I I guess
- 45:52I'm a little empathetic toward that because, you know, being a southern West
- 45:57Virginia as I am, and growing as somebody grew up in the coal fields,
- 46:00you know, we were we were told constantly, people coming in and
- 46:04saying how bad it was, and we're like looking around, saying, what
- 46:07exactly are you talking about? I mean, we're we're living a pretty really
- 46:10good life here with six figure salaries. Not me necessarily because you know I
- 46:15didn't achieve that, but I mean other people and anyway, Uh, I
- 46:21mean I got some text here Texas. Did your Girls' Night out guests really
- 46:23say there are good men out there? Yes? Yes, she did,
- 46:28and uh, and Julie did say they are good men out there, and
- 46:30sometimes we had to be reminded that there are good men out there. So
- 46:32yes, yes she did say that Texas thirty three trillion federal debt. But
- 46:37glad some kid living up a holler can now have high speed internet to play
- 46:40online Xbox. Please have mister Carmichael back. I'll tell us about the economic
- 46:45development that occurs in these areas. Again, folks, and with all due
- 46:49respect to the texture, this is not about playing Xbox, okay. This
- 46:53is about broadband that is needed. It is the water and the sewage and
- 46:59the power that was in nineteen twenty five or nineteen thirty. You do not
- 47:05develop businesses and have quality businesses without broadband. It affects every aspect of the
- 47:12business. This is not about video games. This is about the ability during
- 47:15if you don't believe me, walk into any business, retail establishment, whatever,
- 47:20whose internet happens to be down and see how far you get if they
- 47:23don't have quality internet. And for years, and there's plenty of blame to
- 47:28go around, but for years, the mapping was a really really big issue.
- 47:32I've given the examples and people know what I'm talking about. You know,
- 47:37a company fill in name here would come in and say, well,
- 47:39okay, at the beginning of this holler, we have the first two families
- 47:44have internet, so we've got high speed internet here. Well, there's twenty
- 47:46more families up at hollow, so you know, we got we got to
- 47:52get that taken care of. And I think mentioned is folks and Kelly Workman
- 47:54and others are doing a great job of it right now. And yes,
- 47:58it would not be possible without the federal component. You'll never hear me say
- 48:02that that wasn't part of it. I mean a lot of people of my
- 48:07ilk Republicans conservatives don't want to admit it, but yeah, a lot of
- 48:09this would not be happening, happening. I wish it all could come from
- 48:13private business, but that's not the reality. And a lot of this would
- 48:16not be happening if it were not for the infrastructure Bill's that's the bottom line,
- 48:21bottom line, All right, Get you popcorn ready, because one week
- 48:24from yesterday, next Tuesday, think Ryan, think Oli Frasier, think Chamberlain
- 48:31Russell, think Rick Flair, Dusty Rhodes. You get my point. It's
- 48:37Hodge v. Pushkin next Tuesday for the entire show. We're going to have
- 48:42a debate, a discussion, whatever you want to call it, between State
- 48:45Democratic Party Chair and Delegate Mike Pushkin and State Republican Party co chair Tony Hodge,
- 48:50both in studio in one room. You're in the Palmar storage studio.
- 48:52It should be fun. No other guests, just those two small dose of
- 48:58me and of course you callers and textures. It's going to be next Tuesday,
- 49:01mister Pushkin and mister Rodger. And mister Pushkin is losing one of his
- 49:07top capos in Senator Mike Caputo, who was announced he will not be running
- 49:12for re election next year. Now, State Senator Caputo will be on with
- 49:15Hoppy around ten thirty this morning on talk line to discuss his decision not to
- 49:20run. So also on also next to our Hoppy won't have a rap of
- 49:24course on the special session and interims, including a discussion with State Corrections Commissioner
- 49:30Billy Mitchell. Now, we just learned yesterday that Governor Justice and the state
- 49:34are now being sued for the conditions in the states regional jails and prisons.
- 49:37That lawsuit filed in the federal court. It's going to be in the southern
- 49:44district. I think of that stories onww mentor news dot com. Steve Knu
- 49:49is the attorney in that case. Very very well known, heavy hitting attorney
- 49:52is Stephen Knew and he is going to be the attorney in the case.
- 49:57And he's also going to join Hobby to talk about that case during the eleven
- 50:00o'clock hour this morning on talk Line. History has been made into Mountain State
- 50:05as Delegate Sean Hornbuckle of Cabell County is now the first African American to serve
- 50:09as minority leader. He will be replacing Delicate Doug Skaff. Of course,
- 50:14Doug was on the show last week. Doug or was it two weeks?
- 50:16He was on Hoppy last week and maybe on my show the week before that
- 50:21is stepping down as not as a delegate. He's staying as a delegate,
- 50:24but he did step down as minority leader amidst the rumors that he Doug Scaff
- 50:30may be switching parties and may run for a different office, perhaps Secretary of
- 50:35States. That's what I'm hearing. But anyway, I don't want to bury
- 50:37the headline here. The headline is Sean Hornbuckle, Delegate out of Cabell County.
- 50:43Delian Hornbuckle's a good guy, even for a Democrat. He's a good
- 50:45guy. Now I mean that in all sincerity. I don't know him well,
- 50:50but in the times I have been around him, he has always been
- 50:52a class act and he served his citizen. And I thought it was very
- 50:54interesting that I was listening to some of the audio from one of the home
- 51:00last night and Delegate Marty Gearhart, who's a very good friend of mine out
- 51:04of southern West Virginia, who was about his right wing as you can get.
- 51:07Marty Gearhart was the was the one that had everybody in a standing ovation
- 51:14and welcoming delegated Hornbuckle. So that was kind of cool. I thought the
- 51:17Republican doing that for Delegate Hornbuckle. But again, Sean Hornbuckle, good guy,
- 51:22serves as district well, and I'm sure he'll do a great job as
- 51:25the House Minority leader. Not easy being in that position, as mister Pushkin
- 51:30can tell you. It is Wednesday, which means we'll be out at the
