- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, guys, here is Housewives Goss and Glitter, and we are gonna finally review Cop Without a Badge.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: This is the story of Kevin Mayer, but Daniel Staub makes quite the appearance at the end of the book.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: So Kevin Mayer is a confidential informant for the NYPD and the FBI.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: So the book follows him, not Danielle.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: But he's also Danielle Staub's ex-husband, aka Beverly Merrill's ex-husband.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: She changes her name and it is like quite the star.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: He's also the highest paid confidential informant that the drug enforcement agency ever had.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: So it's actually a really interesting book, but it is not about Danielle, it's about Kevin.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: But she, I mean, when you're his makes a big splash.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she makes a big splash, obviously, in season one.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So this book is like a hot topic at the end of season one of The Real Housewives of New Jersey.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And ultimately leads to the table flip during the finale.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Danielle reveals the book, she slaps it down on the table.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: It was random and so unnecessary.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Well, they had all been talking about it.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: But still a question mark on who actually like uncovered the book.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Like Dina and Caroline had brought it to Teresa, and like they were all talking about it, and Jacqueline was talking about it too.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: But Dina and Caroline claimed that it was like somebody external to the show that just knew about this and like brought it to their attention and they brought it out on the show.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: But anyway, the book was uncovered.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: It was published in like the 90s.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: So it's just pretty crazy how like the book and the fact that she had like a whole different name and identity was uncovered on the show.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't think the producers knew that when they hired her for Housewives, do you?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think so.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: Because like what she was charged with and what she ultimately got was so different.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: She was given five years of probation.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: When she was charged with kidnapping, extortion, and ex assault.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: I feel like you wouldn't exactly get on Housewives.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: But it was a pretty iconic discovery on Housewives.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Like that's a goal find.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Like you hire someone and you think she's a little like sexually promiscuous or whatever, and then come to find out she has like a whole other identity, and it's this.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: The whole like, yeah.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: And like she kidnapped someone, and then you're like, and then she also got off on probation.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: She kidnapped the part about the kidnapping that bothers me the most is that like I get, I mean, not that I agree with it, but like I get the part about how she was like dating the drug lord, and the guy had like made a deal with them and then he owed the money, so he was like this rich kid from the Hamptons.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: They kidnapped him for ransom so that his dad would give the money, they would give him back.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: But like, did they have to starve and pistol whip him?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, come on.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Like the dad paid them like pretty immediately.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: Even so, did they have to take him?
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, like, I mean They were trying to collect.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: I I know, but that is kidnapping.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Yes, they're already doing the illegal activities by dealing all the drugs, so they were trying to collect on the payment.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: So they were just trying to get the money from the dad.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And what I'm saying is, like, the dad's a super rich guy, he paid them right away.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Like, did they have to pistol whip and starve the kids?
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Did she have to pistol whip him?
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Okay, is the question.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Also, I want to know how much of this book did he exaggerate.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: He is very, it's it wasn't written by him, it was written by Kipps, but it is very like complimentary of Kevin.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I I rolled it a few stuff.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I will say he's very into himself that I really enjoyed it.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Yes, it was super interesting, super fascinating and very well written.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Like, I've read books since he didn't write it.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know, but I'm just saying, especially well, if you think about like Jackie's book.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Jackie's book, first of all, in the 90s, self-publishing on Amazon was not possible.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: That is true.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Jackie basically just like printed her book out on Microsoft Word without using spell check and just sent it off to the to Amazon publishers to self-publish her book.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: That is true.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: But anyway, this was was written by like someone real, someone who had a publisher and was a real author.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: It's a real book.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: And but I do really want to know how much Yeah.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: That is true.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: But I did really enjoy it, and I felt like it read like an episode of Law and Order.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Law and Order is one of my ultimate TV shows.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: It's what I put myself to sleep with.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, that is weird.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: No, I wouldn't have to be able to do that.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I put myself to sleep with The Office.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Something funny.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Law and Order and Top Chef are like my two go-to nap shows.
- 5:20unknown: Probably.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Because I've seen every episode have like the thousands.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Disturbed by Law and Order being your nap show, but we'll move on.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Anyway, I thought the opening of this book was so intense.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, right.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: So when we open the book, it's the year 1971.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: So Kevin, the main character, Danielle's ex-husband, is 17.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: He's an Irish teen.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: He lives in the Bronx.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And basically he's like a fucking car thief.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Just like a really reckless car thief as well.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: Surprised me throughout this whole book is that he steals all these cards, he gets the book thrown at him for one of them, which will be.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And they act like it's so unfair.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, he wasn't exactly an innocent flower.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: I know that they wanted to get at the bank robbers, but he admits the bank robbers and then nothing happens.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: No, he never gives up the bank robbers.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: I know, but like he's talking about them in the book, and then it's like obviously way past, like, I guess the Statue of Limitations.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Anyway, they like just pretend it doesn't exist after this.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: What are you talking about?
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: They like I know that he goes to jail because they're trying to put the book on, like, throw the book at him to go to jail to give up the bankers.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: To give up the bank robbers, but he doesn't.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: He doesn't, and then he just lives his whole life and then admits the bank robberies, and then nothing happens.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: You mean after the book is published?
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Like it's just so this is 1971.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: The book is published in like 96.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Nothing happens.
- 6:59unknown: I know.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: They're gonna go back and arrest the bank robbers from 1971 and he's changed the names of the people.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: I'm not saying that they need to do that.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: What I'm saying is I just find it like fascinating that somehow he works with the cops and the FBI on all of these things.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: And he never gives up the robbers.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: He never gives up the robberies.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Because it didn't benefit him in any way.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: If you've learned anything from the book, is he ends up using his relationship with the police to like fulfill his own personal vendettas?
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: It is true.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: I just thought, but like I feel like they just got forgotten about.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: Anyway, we can continue.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: I just have to say that was like a part that annoyed me.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: So anyway, it opens, he's stealing a bunch of cars.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: So he still wants the Bracini brothers to be brought to justice.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: Yes, I do, I do.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: And anyway, it starts off with like how he steals cars and how his growing up, like his parents got divorced, and he is just like never ever forgives his mom.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Being a hoe.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Being a hoe.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: And like, but just his dad is his like god.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: And his dad, I get it, like his dad wasn't the best, and he was just like a hardworking guy, but like he puts his dad on a pedestal.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: He just can't get over his mom.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: He can't get over the fact that they split up and his mom is like dating other men, basically.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, he lit his mom's hair on fire.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Literally.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: So one of the things that bother like one of the things that did bother me about his early life is like, yeah, like he was underage when he stole all these cars, and he was like the getaway driver for these Italian bank robbers.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: And so he's like really out together.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: So annoyed when he came into this deck.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: But and like they send him to like a mental hospital at first, which is like kind of disturbing because it's like he wasn't mentally unhinged.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: But that's what they did in the 70s.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: But if you weren't perfect, then off you go.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: But like the part that bothered me about it wasn't that.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: It was the fact that, like, in the book they kept expressing how like shocked they were that they threw the book at him.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: And it's like, they're actually like he did this one time.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Like he got arrested many times for stealing cars.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: And then he also like told these other stories about, yeah, these like terror stories with his mom and stuff, and they just act like he was like this innocent kid that just had like a bad luck of the draw.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: And it's like, you weren't, you didn't do one thing and were in the long, wrong place at the wrong time.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Like you were like a constant troubled teen, and yes, they threw the book at you.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: And he impersonated a friend at 14 to join the military.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: He wasn't, yeah, which was interesting.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he wasn't like a good I don't know why they kept acting like it was so unfair.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: I was like, he had done this already like many times before they sent him to Rikers.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: People impersonating into the military was like a big thing.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: I know, like, he's obviously he's more the age of my dad, but my grandpa like entered the military young and forged his birth certificate.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: But that was so he could join World War II, this same thing where he was just like, Oh, I have nothing to do when I'm 14 and my friend got drafted.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna become him.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: But it was definitely more of a thing to do at that age.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Then they talk about so like he gets in trouble afterwards for this these car thefts.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: They send him to the mental hospital, then they determine that he's not mentally unhinged, so they send him to Rikers.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: And then in Rikers, he like makes his reputation supposedly by being the shit out of some guy who wanted to be like his boyfriend.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: And so he ends up intimidating all the other guys in there, according to him, after defending himself.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Right, these are the parts that I'm kind of like, okay.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: So anyway, during that time, as Zoe says, they're trying to get him to like rat out these two Italian mobsters that he was like the getaway driver from, and he thinks for, and he thinks that like that's the reason why they gave him such a harsh sentence and tempt him to Riker so that he would give up these brothers.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: And he refuses to give up the Cross Bay Bank robbers.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: He doesn't get out early because of that.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's sentenced to a month in the mental hospital, which he hates.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: It's horrible, obviously.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: In times like that, it makes sense.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're very good now, let alone in the 70s.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: So he gets four years at Rikers.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so he ends up in four years.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: I just like wrote down though that like in the mental hospital, it's so bad that he sleeps and his roommate sleeps under the bed.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: Because he's not mentally unhinged.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: He just is a criminal.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: And he's need he's getting going to get punished for being a criminal.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: And but he just keeps on getting interrogated about these bank robberies, and he never gives them up.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: And then after this, it's like they just forget they exist.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: It drives me nuts.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: It's like a huge part of the book.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: No, it isn't.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: It's a big part of the beginning.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: And like a reason why they like it.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: He gives up a lot of people in this book.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: That is true.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Like he rats out like a lot of people in this book and are just upset up with these two bank robbers.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: That is true.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Anyway.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, the other thing too is like, so this is another example of him constantly acting like everything is like so unfair and like he's so innocent and only ever stole a car.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: But like once he so he's in, he goes to the mental hospital, then they determine that he's not actually mentally imbalanced.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: So then they send him to Rikers.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: And he's while he's waiting.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: No, so like after he finally gets his sentence, like you're gonna get four years and you're gonna go somewhere upstate.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Then they like take him from Rikers and they're transporting him, and then he escapes on the way there.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: What you think after they trust him, like they're like, he's like, Oh, I have to go to the bathroom.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: They're being really nice to him, they're trusting him because he's like this young kid, and he goes to the bathroom at this rest stop and then escapes out a window, and then they catch him and they beat the shit out of him, and he's acting again like this is so unfair.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: It's like, dude, you're helping these bank robbers.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: You've stolen numerous cars, you're trying to escape from prison.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Like you're gonna get in trouble.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: The cops are like, Oh, we trusted you, like Yeah, they were really mad.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he's just like, I don't know why you're so pissed at me.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: He still gets stuck going in prison, somehow gets out to go see his dad.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Because he makes friends with the priest, because he makes friends with the priest.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so he makes friends with the priest, and the priest takes pity on him, and his dad is like dying, basically.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: So he gets permission to get leave to go see his dad while he's dying.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Some of the best luck I've ever seen in my entire life.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: Like this whole book is about this guy just getting lucky.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: So, exactly.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Like, he he really like wins over a lot of people and gets their sympathies.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Like, I've never heard of anybody just getting to take like a little leave from jail, no, and then be trusted to go back.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Like he reported himself and went back, but like they trusted him to like go leave, go back to New York City to have like a little visit with his dad and then go back to prison, and he had to bring himself back to the city.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: Was like this more of a thing though, because later in the book, another inmate does this and goes on a furlough, and I'm like, But were they in the halfway house or prison?
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I understood it as in prison, but maybe you're right.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: But I just thought it was very interesting that these people were getting out of jail on like a mini vacation.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and they're like, Oh, just come back on this day.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was definitely interesting.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, so he's like making a good impression in jail, winning over the pasture.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: He goes and visits his dad.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: His dad is really sick.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: He's like, I just want you to make sure that you report back.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: So he did, and he goes back to jail after visiting with his dad.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: But then he serves the rest of his time, which isn't the full four years, but he serves some of it.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: He gets out early, he races back to New York City, his dad's dead, like that day.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the same day.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: So he moves into his apartment.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: His dad had arranged for him to get a job at this bar for when he got out.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: But he can't actually work at the bar because he's a felon and on probation.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Like, this is this is kind of like I kind of had this issue when they talked about this with Teresa when she can't like drink with the ankle monitor.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: I'm like, if your crime has nothing to do with drugs and alcohol, why can't you work in a bar?
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Like it's a job.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: It doesn't make any sense.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Like that, I don't get like what does that have to do with being a car thief?
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but apparently it's existed since the 70s, so Teresa.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, I just wouldn't think they'd be happy that he has a job.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Like, if he's not an addict, I don't really understand why he can't work at the bar.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: And at this point, he wasn't an addict.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: No, he was just a normal teenager.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: We'll get to that.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: So because of that, because he can't work at the establishment that he thought he was going to be working at, he goes back to his old antics and starts stealing cars and taking out the Vins.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Can we talk about this, though?
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: So he goes back to stealing cars.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: He links up with this other guy who he used to know, like back when he would steal cars.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: And the guy's like, Oh, you can help me with this job.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: And they're the job is to go way outside the opera house and rip the mink coats.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Rip the mink coats off of old ladies coming out of the opera.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: I was shocked.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: And he was like, I can't do that.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, that there's gotta be a line.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: Like, you're gonna chase down old ladies coming out of the opera and rip their coats off.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: He was like, and then run away with them.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: And that was like his line.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: He was like, I can't do this.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: He like punched the guy in the face.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: I was like nervous laughing during that part in the book because I was just like, I can't believe that this is like this guy's hustle.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: He rips coats off of old ladies coming out of the opera.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Like, are you kidding me?
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: I guess there's gotta be something else you can do with it.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, the people that he knows.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh my god.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: So anyway, after that work, he seals a bunch of cars and swamps.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: And he gets caught again, so he has to go back to jail.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: So then at the beginning, so that's like just the first two chapters of the book.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: It already a lot is going on.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: Like this guy has a fascinating life.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: Then like right.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: So he can't work a legitimate job.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: He doesn't want to rip the coats off of ladies, so he goes back to morals.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: He does, he does.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: So he goes back to jail for stealing cars, and they send him to the Queen's House of Detention, and he makes friends with Morris Weiss, who's in there for a really who's like this old guy that's in there for like a really long time because he's like this old hitman.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, guys, he's a charter member of Murder 8.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: Direct quote from the book.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: And this guy was like a hitman, or like the guy who assigned the hitman.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: No, he was like a hitman.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: He had like a fault, like he had people that like worked for him though.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Like that was his he's like the chief, and everybody's afraid of him, even though he's just this like really old man.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah and basically he bankrolls Kevin's time in jail in exchange for Kevin having his lady friends visit the jail, visit Morris in a private room and strip for him while he just washes for a hundred dollars a pop.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Which it makes me a lot of money.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: My main question is how did Morris get away with just having a private room with these ladies?
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: Have you ever watched Narcos?
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: No.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Well, I highly recommend the first two seasons.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: The first season.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: If it's scenes of women taking their clothes off for a wrinkly old man, I don't want to watch that.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: So the first season is is on Pablo Escobar.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: And basically, like Pablo is such a figure that he gets whatever he wants in jail.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: And when you have a guy like Morris, who's like a hitman and in the mob, and there's so much money, he's obviously paying people off for like these most for this private time.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Like he's not just like, oh, I'm in jail for he is paying people off to like live the luxury and the high life.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: And I know we want to pretend that doesn't happen, but it does, especially in the 70s.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I could see how it would be easier to get away with in the 70s.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: I was just kind of like, who's giving him these private rooms?
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: And I found it weirder that he wasn't having sex with them.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: He was just watching.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: But he but if you read the timeline at the end, he got out.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: So he wasn't like that old.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was old, but he wasn't like that old.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that is true.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm like, I found it odder that he was just watching.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: Everyone has their own, I guess.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but he wants Kevin to like supplying him with like ladies.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: And then what are the ladies getting?
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Because Kevin's getting the hundred dollars.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Are the ladies getting a cut?
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, Kevin's just getting the protection.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, gotcha.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Anyway, if any ladies are doing this today, let us know how it works.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: We would like to know if you're getting paid off to go strip in jail.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: But I would be curious, I would be curious.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: I would be curious just to know, like how it works.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: I feel like there's a lot of cameras today.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: We need to blow up on TikTok.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Someone let us know how this works.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: Um, anyways, during this time, these two detectives, Wayne Wright and Doherty, come to talk to Mare.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: And Mare thinks they're gonna come talk to him to badger him about the bank robbers again that Zoe really wants to take down.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Um, but they really are just talking to him because they know of his reputation.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: And they want to see if he has any information pertaining to these other cases that they're investigating.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And Mare doesn't really know about anything that they want to know about, but he sees an opportunity to get himself out of jail.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: So he talks about this guy that stole a Persian rug for$7,500.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: This huge thing.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: It was a big rug.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: It was in the paper.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: There's a picture of it in the book.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: It turns out to be a really, really valuable rug, but Kevin doesn't even know that at this time.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: He thinks it's just worth the rug.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: And he thinks it's just worth like$7,500.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: And he tells them about it.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: And so after he does that, this guy, Doherty, who the detective really takes a liking to him, and like it turns into this blossoming friendship for the rest of the book.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: And that's like the beginnings of Kevin becoming an informant.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: So this is the birth, is Kevin offering information about this Persian rug.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: Doherty like realizes that Kevin is gonna miss his parole hearing because of just like paperwork and it being it, and they basically want to keep Kevin like in jail.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: And Doherty makes all these sacrifices to make sure that Kevin ends up like at this hearing.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: And it's that like helps and helps him out.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: But it can be a big difference between like spending years, like lots more time in jail and bail and all of these things.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: And he really just wants someone on his side.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: So he ends up helping him out.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: Kevin does get released from jail, but he has to go to a halfway house.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: And so he gets transferred to a halfway house for six, and he's there for six weeks, and he has to get a confirmed job and a residence before he can leave.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: And while he's at the halfway house, that's when he meets Brian Malisi, who's a total dick.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Like, oh my god.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he is a horrible person.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: He hates his wife.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: Well thinks she's like has all this money, which she did for a minute.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: And then he, oh man, the story on this guy.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: We can't jump ahead.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: We can't, yeah, we can't because it's just so insane.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: She can't ruin it for you, but this guy's a giant ass.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's horrible.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: And so Kevin's like first interaction with him is he's just talking to Kevin about how he has a super fat wife named Alice.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: And he hates her.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: And he calls her fat Alice and he hates her, and he's just using her for her money and all of these things.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: And Kevin's like, oh my god, yeah.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: You're like so mean to your wife.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: And he wants, he like at the very beginning of their relationship, like has a conversation with Kevin and asks if Kevin can help him like kill his wife for the insurance money.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: And so Kevin goes immediately to visit Doherty, who he now has this relationship with.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Nothing happens yet with Brian, but he does also tell Doherty about his other acquaintances when he's in jail, including Morris, the old guy who had the stripper's dance for him.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Morris had, of course, told Kevin that he could work for him when he gets on the outside and that he has jobs for him.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: So Kevin pretends that he's interested, but then goes to Doherty and like tells him about these opportunities.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: And this is when he becomes like an official.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: And they want to like wire him up and all of that.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of the start.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: So he's got like the Malise thing on the back burner, and he's got Morris's acquaintances that he's gonna start like going.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: He's already talked about this rug.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: And the rug.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: So he's got like three, he's got like three projects going on.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: He makes it seem so easy compared to like Law and Order.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Well, he makes all these like basically he gets so far because he has all these connections.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: Which is like crazy because somehow he keeps them all separated and like no one.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: I'm just shocked that like nobody ever suspects him.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: That's the part that got me too, because I feel like in Law and Order, you get your butt this is real life and not Law and Order.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: So anyway, we go to the next chapter and he's made friends with Doherty.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: He's got um Mali Malay, how do you say his name?
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: Malisi.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: Malisi and Morris.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: And he agrees to meet one of Morris' friends for a quote job.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: And he gets mic'd and ready to record this interaction because he wants time to like shave off of like everything he's doing.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he wants to keep working for the cops, yeah.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: So he meets Parlotti in a parking lot, and this is like his first official job.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: And basically, during that conversation, Parlotti wants to rob a wealthy family in Long Island, and he needs a wheel man, which is like a getaway driver.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: But he doesn't end up calling Mayor back for this job, but the cops do get him on the wiretap.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: They hear him planning the robbery, and basically the plan of Parlottes is to show up, pretend that they're cops, break into the house, kill everybody inside the house, and take all the money, the jewels, the furs, and all of the art.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like, do you have to fucking kill everybody?
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: No, no, right.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: And then so he gets caught talking about this robbery, and then it basically switches to him in his new fancy doorman job with a bunch of hookers.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like another that's that's the other thing that I was like, what is going on with this book?
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: So, like, he's got to jump around a lot.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Well, it jumps around, but like he has all these jobs going on, but he's also supposed to be working as a doorman, and he also has all these relationships.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: I'm like, how does this guy have any time?
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: I don't think I think he's like he's working as a doorman all day, and he's also doing all these jobs, he's meeting the cops at all hours, he's doing these jobs, he's like with all these women.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what is when does he sleep?
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: She starts talking about Lisa, a hooker, and talking about her, and I'm like in my head, I'm like, is this Lisa gonna turn into Danielle later?
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: And then it's the same person.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: I always knew Danielle was Beverly Merrill because I remembered that from Real House House of New Jersey when they kept calling her Beverly.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: But I was just like, is this the same person?
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Is it not the same person?
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Because then we never hear about Lisa the Hooker every day.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: No, we never hear about her ever again, and we barely hear about the doorman job.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Then he does another job that he does is he goes with this guy to a Greek dance held by an old couple where they want to steal the cash box.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh my god.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: It's so weird.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: It's so bizarre, and then we need him as a hitman.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Like, that's another thing.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: So they need the guy, he need him to be the getaway car to steal these things.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: And then they talk about I was so he had so many things going on from Morris in this chapter.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: I was so confused.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's basically he's working like multiple jobs.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: He's getting a bunch of people like thrown under the bus.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: He's working with Doherty.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: And then also Doherty circles back and tells him that they ended up tracking down the Persian rug, and it wasn't worth$7,500.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: It was worth$50,000.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: This was like way, this was like 40 years ago.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: And it was made by like eight Persian children.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: And it had like biblical scenes on it.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Like it was like a really valuable rug.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: So for all of that work, like all those different cases that we just described, and the rug, he gets like his past cleared up basically, and they give him like 1500 bucks.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: So he's like over the moon.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: He's got like the only thing he has to take care of is like 75 fucking traffic tickets because he's such a horrific driver.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: Um, but all of like his serious charges they've like helped him with basically, and he got paid.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: But like they need him as a wheel man for this doorman thing at the club and robbing the old lady, and it's just like then while they're doing that, the car gets towed.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: It's just like a hot mess.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, his life is insane.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Yes, and then at that point, like Mo Malacey is like, Oh, I need you to check on my wife.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so like, right, so this is like the next phase.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: So, like, he gets all that cleared up, he worked for the cops, he helped them, whatever.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Now he is shifting into his personal life.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: So Malisi from the halfway house contacts him and wants him to go live with Alice in New Jersey and like watch over her, make sure she's not spending her inheritance.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like live with her and just make sure everything's okay until he gets out of jail.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: And basically, he's just like super worried that she's gonna spend her inheritance before she comes home.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: And so he agrees.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: Somehow, which is I do find that super weird.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: I find it weird because like sort of like a 70s thing where, like, oh, I need someone to take care of my wife.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: Was it still like I think he was just really paranoid about the money and wanted to know how much money she was spending?
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: How do you play that off to your wife?
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: That was what I was gonna say.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: It was weird.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: It's like she only met Kevin the one time when she visited at the halfway house and Kevin was there, and then she's like super excited when he just shows up at the door and he's like, Oh, Brian wanted us to live together for a few months, and she's like, Oh, welcome home.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, hey.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: Like, I found that to be super weird, but she just was obviously kind of but he says that Alice is a huge ditch, and then the house is in foreclosure, it's in like disrepair too.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: And he needs he needs to be there to help out, right?
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: And also, like, he notices that although Brian calls and is like super mean to Alice and like abusive to her, she's like in love with this guy, which is so gross.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: I feel so bad for Alice.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I do too.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Kevin never like tells her anything about what Brian has said about her.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: He just kind of pretends that he's just like a family friend and everything is fine, and he's like fixing up the yard and just like helping her out.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: During this time, Alice also lives with her friend Beth and Beth's son Bobby.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: So it's like Alice, the friend Beth, Bobby, and Kevin all living together in this one house, waiting for Alice's husband to get out of the halfway house.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: But Beth's husband is on trial for being a serial killer, not he's like a contract killer, so he's in jail.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: So that's why they're like living together.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: It's kind of insane, and so he moves in, Malaise can like convinces him to move in, not just like be there all the time.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, to like live there, right?
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: Check up on Alice, you know, like he's in contact with Doherty still, and Doherty is like, hey, by the way, Alice lives with Beth, help us get her husband.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: So there's still so right.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: So Beth's husband is a contract killer, but he hasn't been sentenced yet.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: They're still working on his case, but he's in jail.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: So Doherty wants this tape that he knows exists of the Robert Escher planning the kill with this guy's wife.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: So he's a contract killer, so he's a hired killer.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: This famous guy's wife wanted him dead.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: So Bobby was hired, and the cops know about this tape that exists.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: They're not being transparent of how they know the tape exists, but they know the tape exists of them planning the murder, and now they know that Kevin is living with Beth Eschert.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: So they want Kevin to find this tape that they know exists.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Kevin has a crush on Beth.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: So he does agree to this, but he's like torn about it.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he gets wired and he tries to ask Beth about this tape.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: Beth is acting like she has no idea that and that's basically like what we hear about it right now.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: He ends up, we go to like a different chapter, and he agrees to go undercover to meet with this guy, Boyles, who wants a hit attempt, and he knows this guy from Morris.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: And so he goes on to find out about this hit attempt and manages to get in to say what he needs is that he needs Kevin to whack his partner.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: And so now we want he wants it to make it look like a robbery, and now Kevin is wired up and again doing a job for Doherty on trying to get all these people in jail, trying to just make himself look good.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: Like be this undercover informant.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: He's worked for Morris, he knows Morris, and now he's gonna try and throw these people under Morris under the bus.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: And then it turns back to like, we're gonna make it look like a robbery, blah blah blah, and then goes back to Beth.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: Well, they end up catching up.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, they end up catching the bull, the what's his name?
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: The bowler bull guy.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: Um, so that case does end up going successfully back at the ranch.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: He's still having trouble with Beth.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: The cops are really pushing him to get this tape, and he's like, This is my personal life now, and he's like falling in love with Beth.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: And then somehow he finds the tape, like Beth leaves for the day, and he finds the tape, and then Beth comes back and is like, Oh, by the way, I told my husband I'm physically attracted to you.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: That part was so weird, yeah.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: It just throws you for a loop because you're like, wait, I was just reading about this guy who got his like this guy's partner busted for murder or like a contracted hit, and now I'm in part of a chapter that just switched, and now your roommates going to her husband saying that she's physically attracted to you.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: It's so bizarre, and then Esher is like, Well, now I need to meet Kevin.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: If you're attracted to him, I need to meet him.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: He gets into a car crash at some point, and then he goes and sleeps with Beth.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Like a very bizarre turn of events.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Well, he does go, so he turns the to close the loop.
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: He does turn the tape in, he finds it a credenza.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: That is true.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: Then he does agree to meet with Beth's husband in jail.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: He meets with him, and his husband oddly is like, Yeah, you can be with Beth and like watch over her until I get out of jail.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: So that's what happens.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: All is well, and then, like, yeah, basically, the second he gets home that night, he sleeps with Beth and they start a relationship.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: Disturbingly, Malise gets out of the halfway house on a furlough, and he's there visiting.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: He comes to the house and visits with Schofield, who's clearly his lover.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: He's a man from the halfway house and he's his gay lover.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: But they don't explicitly say that.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: They just let you figure that out.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: So, but they do imply that that's the reason why he's so like angry with Beth all the time is he's like hiding all these like feelings.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, Alice, yeah.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: He's like hiding all of these like feelings, and he has this like aggression.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: And all Alice wants to do is to hang out with her husband, who is like here on this furlough.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: And she tries to hang out with him and he like beats her to a pulp.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: It basically to the point where like Beth takes her to the hospital, is like, you need to leave him.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: Kevin takes Malacy and Schofield to a diner and is like, you need to fucking leave.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: Like, this is insane.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: And basically, they're like, No, we want to still want to go through this killing.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: So they try to like rope Kevin into this murder again.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: And Kevin says no, and then he just drops Malisi and Schofield back at the halfway house because they need to go back there and sleep.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: So this is like they were just out on a little visit, causing havoc, and then going back to the halfway house.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: So that's it.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: And then Kevin just goes back home.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: Nothing happened.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, I do have to say that as delusional as Alice is, it does sort of bother me that like Kevin's hearing all this stuff and he never has like a serious talk with Alice.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: No, and was like, your husband has now two times tried to get me to kill you.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: Like he just doesn't say anything.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: He just goes back and just continues to live there.
- 40:07SPEAKER_02: It's totally fine.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like sh this woman is still in like major danger.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: Like it doesn't make any sense.
- 40:14SPEAKER_02: And then he doesn't say anything to her.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: It drives me.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: They just go back and then they wake up the next day and everybody acts like nothing happens.
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: And like I know that part of it is Alice because she's like, oh, he's not.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: She's super delusional.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I just feel like if K I she is super delusional and she is abused.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: But I do think her having the relationship with Kevin and Beth, I feel like if Kevin had sat her down with Beth and been like, this guy's really dangerous, and he's now two times only he wants to kill you.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel like it would have made a difference, but he just never says anything.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, okay, he just they try to rope him in to this murder again at the diner, and he just says no and then drops them off at the halfway house.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: It's like, call the police, right?
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: Like, what are you doing?
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: And they don't go anywhere.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: No, it doesn't, but I just feel like this would have gone somewhere.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Like they were out on furlough, they he washed and beat her to a pulp.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: It's like something had just happened.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: She clearly would have had Mars.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: So different in the 70s, and I feel like that was just like part of life.
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: It's I mean, it's depressing, but I feel like espousal use wasn't as big of a thing.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: But anyway, after all that, Esher goes to prison.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he gets convicted of three life sentences.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: And because he helped turn in the tape that he found.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: And Beth is obviously heartbroken, but then he immediately moves in with Beth.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: Yep, they get their own apartment together in the Bronx.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Um, and then Mare does tell her that he did help convict her husband by turning in the tape.
- 41:53SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: And she's just like, okay.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is fine.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: And then he's like, you basically have to get your shit together and leave Esher because she won't divorce him.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: And he was like, if we're together, then you have to divorce him.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: Then somehow Esher gets convicted on two more murders, and he then gets asked to assist with a murder down by Schofield.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: Who was Malise's lover.
- 42:21SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: So he's now living with Beth.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: Eshert's out of the picture.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: He gets Kevin now gets roped into another investigation.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: He wants trying to bring down Schofields, which is Malise's lover.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: Schofields apparently got released from the halfway house, and they think that he murdered a prostitute.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: And they know that Mare is a known associate of Schofields.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: So basically, they offer him$500 to go get Schofield.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: To confess.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: To confess.
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: So he wears a wire.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: He goes to meet Schofield and get all the details off of this murder.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: And Schofield like very easily tells him like the whole story of how he murdered this prostitute with his bare hands.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: And Kevin gets it all on the wire.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: This is like Kevin's like, how do you just go admit this?
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: This is the thing too, like why I found the book so unbelievable.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: It's like he I could kind of see why he didn't necessarily suspect him as an informant, but how do you that easily just like give up this whole murder story?
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: I have no idea.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: He's just like, yeah, she like he just it's like they were just having a conversation, and he's just like, Yeah, I couldn't get it up, so I got mad at her, and I hit her over the head with a lamp and she wouldn't die, so I did all these other things.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: And it's like maybe just not worried at all of the story getting out.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: Like he just didn't seem to think there was any risk that he was gonna get caught for this.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: The way I saw it was Because he's such good friends with or good friends with Malaise and Alice that he just felt comfortable telling him this.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: It seemed like overly easy to get this confession.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: Um, well, I'm telling you, this whole book is just based on law, essentially.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: So then, like, so they have this all on wiretap, and the cops are gonna bring him to trial, and they're like, Kevin, you need to come testify now, and because you're gonna do that, we want to put you in witness protection, and they want to like move them to like the Dakotas, and Kevin's like, no, no way, yeah, it's not even gonna happen, right?
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: So he wants to do it, but he insists on just like moving to New Jersey instead, and the feds agree with him.
- 44:49SPEAKER_00: So he, Beth, and Bobby just like move to a townhouse in New Jersey, courtesy of the federal government, and but the government did not feel okay with him just moving to Jersey.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: No, and I don't see how that would like keep him safe, but he does like help get Schofield put away.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: But it doesn't, yeah, it's like he didn't change his name.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: He's living over in New Jersey.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm like, this isn't exactly what his protection, but yeah, they weren't exactly like supportive of that, but that's what he wanted to do.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: And so he gets out of the confidential informant game and he decides he's gonna go work for the railroad.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: But then he also gets in trouble trying to rob a bank with someone else that he met through I think Morris, and then he's trying to rob a bank and a regular cop sees him, and then uh Doherty and like the FBI have to like get involved to the cop, you need to back away, and then the bank robbery fails.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: But they somehow get the guy in the bank.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: Was this another case he was working on?
- 45:51SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, and he they were like, Oh, you can do this, and the cop gets told to leave the area, and then after that, he doesn't do much.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: And Alice and her, and then it skips to the point where Ali about Alice.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: Right, which we should get into, which is really sad actually.
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: So then, so yeah, he's like lightly helping out the cops, then he's like done helping them out, he's living in New Jersey with Beth, and then he and Beth are just like watching the news together one night, and they see this story on the news about Alice.
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: The news is that Alice and her new roommate, who is also another single mother with a child, are all murdered in their home and their throats were slashed.
- 46:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was uh it was not pretty for Alice, it was like beyond throat slashing for Alice.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: She was essentially mutilated.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 46:53SPEAKER_02: And he sees this and he tries telling them, like, I know it was Malaysi, it was all him, I've told you guys this, like you need to keep an eye on him, and you guys didn't.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: And it was one of the most brutal killings in the history of Bergen County, and there were 48 cops that were assigned to the case.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: And and the cops were like, Well, why didn't you come forward earlier?
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: And he's like, I tried to.
- 47:22SPEAKER_02: And this is the that's the part that's so sad is that he tried to say that he would kill him, like kill Alice, and it didn't work, and when she got beat up, he tried to say he will kill her, and nothing happened.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: So although he never spoke directly to Alice, he had talked to the police and they didn't do anything about it.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: There was a point where the cops did show up to her house on a tip and told her about like the tip that they had received, which was that she was gonna be killed, and she didn't do anything about it either.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: So the other part of this is so like he's trying to tell the cops that he knows that it was Malisi.
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: Also, Malisi is now out of jail.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: He hasn't been arrested yet because they don't have any proof, but he is trying to make all this money from like these insurance claims.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 48:19SPEAKER_00: And he's saying that there's a bunch of jewelry missing from the house.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: And Kevin's like telling the cops that he can confirm that this is all fraudulent because he had previously helped Alice pawn all of her jewelry for money, and he has the pawn receipts.
- 48:37SPEAKER_00: So he's saying that Brian's lying and this is all a scam to make money because he knows that she had sold that jewelry off before Brian had ever even got out of jail, and he kept all the receipts.
- 48:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know, which is crazy, which is kind of crazy, right?
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: Beth also knew of this too.
- 48:53SPEAKER_02: So him and Beth give sworn statements on this, right?
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: And are like, we know that he's full of shit.
- 49:00SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 49:00SPEAKER_02: Like he did it, right?
- 49:02SPEAKER_00: And they want Kevin to now wear a wire to go back and get a confession from Lisi, but Kevin can't because Malise may have heard that he ratted on Schofield because Kevin never went into witness protection, so now he can't help them on this case any further.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: But if he decided to live in New Jersey instead of the Dakotas, right.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: So Kevin just retreats back to normal life, and Malisi is still on the loose for a little while, and they just sort of like put a pause on the story.
- 49:35SPEAKER_00: Then he gets into drag racing and fast Corvettes.
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: Yes, and he gets really well known for these street races in um LA, right?
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: No, New York.
- 49:47SPEAKER_02: New York.
- 49:48SPEAKER_02: Like on a quarter mile, like white LA.
- 49:50SPEAKER_02: Fast and Furious.
- 49:52SPEAKER_02: But yes, yeah.
- 49:53SPEAKER_02: A quarter mile street racing thing.
- 49:55SPEAKER_02: He buys a Corvette and he soups it up and he ends up in a magazine.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: And at this point, it's like, can't do too much because he's so he's street famous for Corvette racing.
- 50:09SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 50:09SPEAKER_02: But then in the midst of all this, he gets a call that one of the guys he got to go to prison um a while ago gets out.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: Then Doherty tells him he wants to retire.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: So I actually will fill in my blanks.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, he gets famous for drag racing, yes.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: He's Corvette.
- 50:32SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah.
- 50:34SPEAKER_00: Then it's 1981.
- 50:37SPEAKER_00: So, like a couple years have passed since he's worked for the cops.
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: Um, he's retired from that life.
- 50:44SPEAKER_00: He's working at the railroad and then he's drag racing at night.
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: Nothing has happened yet with Malise.
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: But then in 1981, he hears on the news that Malisi's just shot in the mouth.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: Mare thinks that it's this guy, Mad Dog, from prison.
- 51:02SPEAKER_00: And his theory is that Malisi tried to hire Mad Dog to kill Alice when he couldn't find anybody else to do it, and Mad Dog never collected the money.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: So he goes to kill Malisi.
- 51:17SPEAKER_00: But this is just like a theory.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: So Kevin's like trying to share this, but he actually has like no proof that that's what happened.
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: However, Brian goes, I mean, Kevin goes to talk to Mad Dog and talk to like some other people that know him, and he finds out that that is true.
- 51:38SPEAKER_00: Malise tried to hire him to kill Alice, and when Mad Dog found out that there was also a kid living in the house, he was like, No, I'm not gonna do it.
- 51:47SPEAKER_00: And he was like mad that Malisi wanted to kill the kid.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: The street words mad dog saying, like, I don't kill kids.
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: Like it was just some random thing that he'd said, so then one thing led to another.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: And so he didn't want to do it and he backed out of it, but he still wanted payment for all the work that he had done thus far.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: Malise never paid him, and so mad dog tips off the police anonymously that there's going to be a murder at Alice's house.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: That's when the police try to warn Alice, she doesn't believe him.
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: Alice ends up getting murdered by Malisi, and then a couple years later, Mad Dog kills Malisi for never collecting on the payment, which is just like wild.
- 52:40SPEAKER_00: Like this is like two years later.
- 52:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's insane.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: And Kevin was already so shocked about Alice, and then, but he knew.
- 52:50SPEAKER_02: Like he knew from like acting the dog that it was most likely Mad Dog that had killed Malisi.
- 52:57SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 52:58SPEAKER_02: Anyway, he's still street racing.
- 53:00SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 53:01SPEAKER_02: And he wins enough money for even more cars.
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 53:05SPEAKER_02: And the case starts against Malisi.
- 53:09SPEAKER_02: That's set to get like they find out more of the insurance and how that's supposed to work.
- 53:14SPEAKER_02: And it just becomes like more of a tangled web of like how this is owed, what is owed, and how mad dog settled.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: Um, so after all of that, it sort of inspires Kevin to get back into the confidential informant game.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: So yeah, he kind of frames it as like he wants to get back into the game because he feels like so sad about this whole Alice thing.
- 53:41SPEAKER_00: Um, and he's sickened by it.
- 53:44SPEAKER_00: So then he just like volunteers this information to Doherty to get back into the game.
- 53:49SPEAKER_00: So he starts telling Doherty about this shop that's receiving stolen vehicles.
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: Doherty refers him to an FBI agent named Debelis, and Debelis offers him a thousand dollars to like get on this case.
- 54:04SPEAKER_00: And so he's back in the game.
- 54:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:08SPEAKER_02: It goes into this one cop who is the same age as Mayor.
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: How do you say his name?
- 54:18SPEAKER_02: Colinary.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: Colinary, yeah.
- 54:21SPEAKER_02: And so they're talking about Colinary's upbringing, and he always the VP of a motorcycle game, and he meets this woman, the woman that he ends up marrying to another person's motorcycle club.
- 54:35SPEAKER_02: And then they're like, Well, we need to arrange for you to meet with this person, and he's just a Corvette guy, and somehow they end up setting up a fake chop shop because he knows so many of so many of so many, but he wasn't always a cop.
- 54:51SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 54:51SPEAKER_02: It was basically like this is a chapter on how they end up making how he ends up finding his way to becoming a cop.
- 54:58SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 54:59SPEAKER_02: And because of his background, that's how he ends up becoming such good friends with Mayor.
- 55:05SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 55:05SPEAKER_02: Essentially.
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: And it's a pretty short chapter, but basically, just on that, he uses Mayor to like steal a car to get them into the chop shop.
- 55:16SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 55:17SPEAKER_02: But yeah, something just like short and easy at this point.
- 55:21SPEAKER_02: And then basically it goes into more about his relationship.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: It was a pretty simple thing.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: I think.
- 55:27SPEAKER_02: So anyway, his relationship with Bet though, they mention it briefly.
- 55:30SPEAKER_02: It's starting to go down the toilet.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she doesn't want him to be like working for the cops anymore.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: She just wants him to like work his regular job.
- 55:40SPEAKER_00: And their relationship is getting distant because during this whole time, which is really interesting, she's like becoming this like executive at a magazine.
- 55:50SPEAKER_00: And she has like her whole own career and it's really flourishing.
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: And she's also like annoyed with him for his confidential informant stuff.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: So like he's pretty certain that she's having an affair with this guy at work, and she's like not really trying to hide it either.
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: No, she brings him up, she brings him up all the time, yeah.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: So and suddenly takes up golfing, which is like his big thing.
- 56:14SPEAKER_00: So basically, like she's cheating on him.
- 56:17SPEAKER_00: Kevin knows, she sort of knows that Kevin knows, but they're just like not saying it, and that just like goes on for a while.
- 56:25SPEAKER_02: So, anyway, there is like this thing, and he gets called in to doing this heist.
- 56:32SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 56:32SPEAKER_02: And the whole thing is that he is supposed to just be their getaway driver.
- 56:39SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 56:40SPEAKER_02: And he was like, I don't know about this.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: He gets an odd feeling about robbing this jewelry guy who apparently brings in like thousands of dollars of jewelry from the store to his house.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: He's apparently like carrying a suitcase of jewels home.
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, every night or something.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: And basically, it turns out that it is a cop.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: He is like, Nope, I don't want to do this.
- 57:03SPEAKER_02: He abandons the three people that he's working with that night, and he leaves them, and they end up going back and doing it anyway.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: And it turns out they end up killing this cop who is also a jewelry guy, and he ends up getting pulled in because they think he is part of the heist.
- 57:24SPEAKER_02: And really, he was just the undercover cop, or like the confidential informant, trying to get these people arrested, but they want to throw him under the bus.
- 57:35SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: It just ends up this big thing, and Beth just gets more and more disappointed.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: And he ends up getting like a bad taste in his mouth because they're accusing him of the police are like accusing him of being involved when he was just trying to have like work on a case for them from the beginning.
- 57:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:57SPEAKER_02: And so he doesn't end up getting paid for this case.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: So he won't test it.
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: So then he sort he sort of like really steps away from things at this point.
- 58:08SPEAKER_00: Then he's like retreating back into just his normal, non-confidential informant life, and he like really starts like getting super serious about drag racing and develops a super close friendship with this guy named John Uribe, whose family is a part of a drug cartel.
- 58:27SPEAKER_00: John's like really fascinated with cars, and Kevin has this reputation for being this like really great dracer and this car expert.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: So, in exchange for Kevin's expertise on cars, John starts giving him Coke.
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah and Kevin tries it for the first time ever, and he's just blown away by it.
- 58:49SPEAKER_00: And it starts a love affair with Coke for the rest of his life.
- 58:55SPEAKER_02: A love affair of hookers.
- 58:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 58:57SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 58:58SPEAKER_00: He loves it.
- 58:58SPEAKER_00: He loves it both, he loves both of those things, and he starts cheating on Beth.
- 59:03SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 59:04SPEAKER_02: And it's all supposed to be like him realizing that Yuribe was a money launderer and shouldn't have become like such a thing.
- 59:14SPEAKER_02: And then it becomes a giant thing.
- 59:17SPEAKER_02: Good summary.
- 59:19SPEAKER_02: But he's just like, oh, I'm gonna get Yuribe because he's a money launderer.
- 59:22SPEAKER_02: And Yuribe offers him Coke, and he's like, Yay, Coke.
- 59:25SPEAKER_02: And then he's working on a car with his steps on Bobby, and then Yuribe gives money to Bobby for helping on his car, and it just becomes like this, like this whole conflicting tangled web with Yuribe.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 59:44SPEAKER_02: And he uses drag races to fund the dealing, and it just spins out of more than like money laundering.
- 59:52SPEAKER_02: At that point, that's when it becomes like drug dealing.
- 59:55SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 59:56SPEAKER_02: And then he ends up meeting a guy, Caldera, who's really a cop on modified assignment, and but he really just wants a bribe.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_02: And it turns into like this whole to-do.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_02: Like goes on disability, but wants to hold it account, like hold Caldera and okay.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_00: So all of that's to say is he's been working as an undercover cop for like 10 years.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: He's also like flirting with the line of the law himself for a while.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: His marriage to Beth is basically like shit at this point.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: And so there's a whole relationship there, essentially.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh what, hey babe, I love you, but like we have nothing left.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they've got nothing left.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_00: She's like annoyed with him.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: He starts hanging out with Yuribe, and this is like where we're gonna speed up because it's a very long book, and it's just more of him like helping with cases and things like that.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: But this is where enter Beverly Merrill.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_00: So he gets like really good friends with this guy who's in this drug cartel.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_00: He starts helping him out with cars in exchange for coke.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_00: He's never done it in his life.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_00: He loves it.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_00: At this point in time, like nobody thinks cocaine is like addictive.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_00: So he's kind of like like his doctor and like other people knows he does it.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Like he even went home and told Beth, and she was just kind of like, Oh, like sleep it off.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like whatever.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_02: It's not an addictive substance, whatsoever.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's getting these like crazy heart palpitations, and like they just they call them anxiety attacks, and it's like this is from doing coke.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_00: This is from doing coke.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_00: So yeah, he's doing a lot of drugs, and then he also starts like drug running with Yuribe from New York to Miami.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_00: Because like during this time, like a bunch of time passes, and Yuribe becomes like this like drug lord.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: Like he's got like a mansion down there and this big business and everything, and he's like inviting Kevin to come down with him.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_00: And Kevin's like still working with the cops.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, I don't like Yuribe never suspects this whole time that Kevin's wearing a wire on him.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or that he is friends with cops or does anything with cops.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_02: And when questioned, Kevin just has an excuse for everything.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_02: It's insanity, right?
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_00: And Kevin's also like not being the best guy either, because it's like he's doing the drugs, he's helping him.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_02: He's sleeping with a bunch of prostitutes, yeah.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_02: So he's so many prostitutes.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_00: He's like talking about how he's going down to Miami and having these like six ways and all this stuff, and I'm like, I roll.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_00: Anyway.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_02: Apparently, he was known for like having.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, I looked at the photos he dropped into the book, and I'm like, he wasn't exactly like a Casanova.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_00: He looked like this little red-headed Irish man.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_02: I had a lot of comments and the book, and someone Lacey looked like Charles Manson.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_00: He was creepy looking for sure.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_02: He straight up looked like Charles Manson.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_00: Um, right.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_00: So anyway, during these trips to Miami is where we meet Danielle.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_00: Bev.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_02: aka Beverly.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_00: Big Bev, yeah.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_00: Big Bev.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_00: The Versace clad elephant herself.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_00: Beverly Merrill, aka Danielle.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_00: Stop.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_02: And I need to know when did she officially change her name?
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_02: Before, like, housewives.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_00: Well, it was during the book because like she af okay, so like basically he meets her, falls in love with her immediately.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_00: Like, we'll go into detail about that, but like when he brings her back to New York, she goes through her whole court case, doesn't really get a big sentence, and then starts working at a strip club, still goes by Beverly, and then when she starts working at her second strip club, is when she starts going by Danielle.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_00: So it has nothing to do with the case.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_00: She just started going by Danielle.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_02: But I feel like they changed it because of everything that went on, or she changed it because of everything that went on, but she got her case specially approved to be in New York versus Florida.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_00: But she didn't like change her name and go to witness protection.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_00: Like the case had ended.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_00: She got her punishment, they moved in together, she worked at OnePlace's Beverly, they started fighting a bunch, she was cheating on him, she started working at a second strip club, and then she changed her name to Danielle.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_02: True.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_00: So, like, and she didn't officially like legally change her name, just her friend said, Oh, she's going by Danielle and works at a different club.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: So it's like, it doesn't seem like it had anything to do with the case.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_00: But anyway, like he meets her in Miami during these drug runs with Yuri Bay.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_00: She is just kind of like this high-end companion that's hanging out at the mansion.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_02: High-end companion in hot pants.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_00: Hot pants.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_00: And you can see her with her legs open on this giant leather armchair.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_02: You can see some things.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_00: And he can see a lot of things.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_00: He's like mesmerized by her.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_00: Like completely mesmerized by her.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_00: And they hook up the first night after this big adventurous night, and it's like the most explosive sex he's ever had.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, it wasn't like an abad, he was very into her.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_00: Like he was like, This is the love of my life.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: Having this hot sex, and then he goes back home to Beth.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, if Beth is also having this Lasyvious affair, it's kinda like I don't know she's been having her affair, but only because he's been an asshole.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: So she's been Carrying on with this guy at the magazine for quite a while.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: Like they could have gotten a divorce by now.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_02: But at this point, I feel like he's been having sex with post suits.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_00: It's like they've both been cheating on each other for years.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_00: I'm like, why are they even married?
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_02: Their kid isn't even a-stable man at the magazine who plays golf with you, or do you want the Coke addict?
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_00: Or she was previously married to a hitman, so I don't her taste in men is kind of I guess I would choose the magazine guy.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_02: Good point.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't know.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_02: Good point.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_00: Like, this woman is attracting a lot of interesting characters.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, so he falls in love with Danielle.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_00: The interesting thing is he never actually like goes into he doesn't go into too much about like his breakup with Danielle.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_00: Like he talks about like he ends up bringing her back to New York and helping her out with her own trial because she he finds out that she's like separately in trouble for the kidnapping, the extortion, the pistol lip, the wall.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_00: He helps her with her case because of all of his connections, and then they just start like living together, but he's like still with Beth.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: Then he like has this like drug-induced freak out at Beth and holds a gun to her head, so then she's finally like, okay, I'm done.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_02: Goodbye.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_02: But then he does that to Beth, and then he does it to Danielle twice.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_00: So that's the thing, is he starts to really like he's really like lost his damn mind.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_02: Like he brings is like 100%.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_00: Like I understand that they were both cheating on each other and having affairs, but he also like full-blown brings Danielle back to New York and wants to live with her before he's ended his relationship with Beth.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_00: It's like that was weird.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, the the thing that I thought that was weird about the club is like he knew this whole time that she was a stripper.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_00: A stripper, a companion of sorts.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_00: He knows this about her.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_00: He gets her the job.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_00: He gets her the job at the strip club, but then he goes, he gets jealous, and so he just goes to during her shifts to watch her dance.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_00: I'm like, that's a little weird, like to watch her dance.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_02: But she still manages to cheat on him.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_00: Apparently, she's sleeping with every man in the building.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_02: Their landlord, their next door neighbor.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_00: So he goes, so like he's done with Beth.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_00: He's full-blown in the relationship with Danielle.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_00: Now he's like obsessed with Danielle.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_00: Still betterly at this point.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_00: She's a dancer.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_00: He's very suspicious of her cheating on him because Beth cheated on him.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_00: Come to find out, so he wiretaps her phone like a psychopath.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_00: Somehow.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_00: Finds out that she's this part I sort of didn't believe.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_00: She took a phone call from every man in the building.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_00: I mean, like, I don't know if I believe that.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_00: I believe she wasn't faithful, but I don't think she was sleeping with every man in the fucking building.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_00: She was just getting a phone call after phone.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_00: Like, if he was basically living there, he's never heard any of these phone calls.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_02: Maybe she told them to like call them and a certain call.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_00: But like, how did they know the second that he left to go sit in his car?
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_00: Like, I thought it was very exaggerated.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_02: I'm like, maybe the keep it out the window.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_00: The landlord, I can understand because she probably just didn't want to pay rent, but I don't think she was sleeping with every guy in the building.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_00: No, but it was a little dramatic, and he's like sitting out in his car listening to the wiretap like a lunatic.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_00: So yeah, so then he starts getting like violent with Danielle, and then they just sort of break up.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_00: Like he doesn't go into anything, like he doesn't even talk about an official divorce.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_00: No, which is weird because they were married.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_02: But like for a year, right?
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_02: Like it wasn't very long.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_00: No, it wasn't very long, but he didn't like talk about when they got married or when they got divorced.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_02: Like the rest of his life was just on like hot mess.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_00: He has more relationships after Danielle that don't go very well.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_00: But anyway, this is why we're here is because of Danielle.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_00: So we'll just stick to that.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_02: The whole book, like, we skipped a lot to cover Danielle.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_02: But like Yuribe and he has to go help him, and then Yribe crashes his car, and then they aren't friends anymore because he turns Yribe in.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_02: And then his last person after Danielle turns out to get murdered by a serial killer.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, his last girlfriend after Danielle gets murdered by a serial killer.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_02: And he apparently met the serial killer, which I don't know.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like that's the thing is this guy just I'm like, how many things could happen to one person?
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_00: He seems like a really big storyteller to me.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_02: He does.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_02: Like the whole Yuribe thing, going to psychosis more than once, somehow becoming friends with him again, even though he gets in trouble.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_02: They're like BFFs.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_02: And then he goes and he meets Mary Catherine, and Mary Catherine becomes a drug addict.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_02: And then Mary Catherine meets a serial killer who's sleeping with her because she's pimping herself out for drugs.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_02: And then he meets her and then essentially like gets murdered.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_00: And she was on like 60 minutes.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_02: And then he goes through that and then it's like, wait, somehow you've been through two divorces.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_02: Someone murders like your old roommate and a kid.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_02: You've been part of like 20 hits, cars stealing, the robberies that you were never convicted of.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_02: And then your ex-girlfriend gets murdered by a serial killer.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_00: I guess after all of these stories, I'm so curious how you're still like those bank robbers should have been arrested back in 1971.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_02: Everything else he wraps up.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_02: It's just those that he doesn't.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_00: I feel like he didn't wrap up Danielle.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_02: He did a little bit.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_02: I mean Really.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_02: He threatens her with a gun twice and then.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and she was just like, I don't want to see you anymore.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_00: And he never talks about he they never even talks about how they actually got married.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_00: And then he never mentions that they got divorced.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_00: It's like they were actually married for a year.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but they were only married for a year compared to he was with Beth for so much longer.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_02: He talks about the ending of that, and then he talks about how everyone else went to jail.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_02: The only thing he does not talk about is the bank robbers.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_00: Well, he had loyalty to them.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_00: They're his first job.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_02: But I'm still saying, like, have everything we don't hear anyone else questioning him for the rest of the book.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_02: I'm just glad this chapter.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_00: I'm just glad the guy that stole the Persian rug was brought to justice.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_02: The$50,000 Persian rug sold by little kids in the Middle East.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_00: Well, because even the guy that stole it probably didn't even realize it was worth$50,000.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_02: No, he probably didn't.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_02: But I just Especially back in 1971.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_02: How much would that be now?
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_02: For a Persian rug.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_02: That was probably like over 100k now, at least.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_02: Uh way more than that.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_02: But yes.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_02: Anyway, if you guys are in for a fascinating story, this is definitely one of them.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_02: We skimmed over the end.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_02: This book was insane.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_02: If you like Law and Order, you like true crime, this is a book to read.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_00: And apparently, like after the whole book scene and table flip scene, Teresa and Jacqueline end up like having dinner with this guy.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_00: And there's like pictures of them like all hanging out, like laughing together when they were like investigating like Danielle.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_02: I don't understand their whole point in wanting to like know so much more of her background when they like already know I mean I don't think she's presenting her new self.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_02: She's got kids, she was a model.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I do think that this whole thing, like now that I've read the actual book, I'm like, if they I don't think any of them read that whole book.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_00: Because if they did, they would know that the book is not about her.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_00: And she's in like two chapters of it.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_00: And like I get that the way that she's portrayed is that she was like a stripper and did Coke, but it's like it was the fucking 80s.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_00: And everything.
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_00: Like, do you think nobody else on the Real Housewest of New Jersey did Coke in the 80s?
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_00: Because I'm pretty sure that that's not true.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_02: I'm pretty sure Dorinda has done Coke forever.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, I just like it's not a great portrayal, but it's also not like the world.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, like, they acted like this book was written about her.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_00: And it's she's like part of like a drunk cartel and all these things, and it's like she's a very minor character in the book.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_02: She is she's only married because of Yuribe, and we have so like a big portion of the book is about Yuribe himself.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_02: And yes, we know a little bit of her and how he if it wasn't for him, she would have probably ended up in jail for quite a while.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_02: Because of his connections.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_02: She doesn't show up until page 200 and something out of a 350-page book.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_02: Like there is not a lot, and the ending of the book is really more about like him getting his life on track after meeting Mary Catherine.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_00: I do think it was funny though, how in season one or two, when they talk about like how they've called her out for like being a stripper, she like tries to play it off like she was just like a burlesque dancer when she was obviously like some sort of escort and stripper.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_00: And it's like, at this point, just like own it.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_02: You weren't like a burlesque dancer in Miami and the 80s.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_02: She tries to say that it was a lie.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_02: Like, what'd she say?
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_02: There's two truths in the book or whatever.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that didn't make any sense at all.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_00: It's like she, yeah, she said there's two truths in here.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_00: One, I was arrested, and two, I did change my name.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_00: And it's like, well, then obviously there's more things that happened.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, why would you be arrested and why would you change your name?
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_00: We know that he's an exaggerator.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_00: I do think he's an exaggerator.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_00: But I do also believe she was a very good idea.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, at the same time, if you read the police reports according to like stuff they've read online and on Reddit and everything, so like there's obviously sources.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_02: She was arrested, actually, for the extortion, the kidnapping, and everything.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_00: It was just her and that one other guy.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_02: So she can say that it wasn't true in the book.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_02: According to the courts, she was actually brought like arrested for these things.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_02: And if it wasn't for Kevin, she would have been in a lot more trouble.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_02: A lot more trouble.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_02: Like if he didn't have the connections that he did, she would have gotten way more than just her probation.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_02: So who knows how she would have ended up on the housewives after that.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_02: Fascinating.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's definitely an interesting background to find out about housewife that you're not expecting at all.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_00: Like they definitely like hit the jackpot with that one.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_00: That is true.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, I wonder if there'll be like anything we need to know, like in like the upcoming.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_02: Anyone have a secret background?
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_02: Because like you don't want them to get in trouble, but I was looking at this thing and it was like all of the housewives mugshots, and so many of them have gotten in trouble.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_00: But a lot of them are in trouble after they've been on the show because of the publicity and the attention that they're getting from the show.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_00: So it brings the stuff that they're doing to light.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_00: But this is like waiting for the show.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_02: It's just very fascinating.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_02: But anyway, we enjoyed that.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_02: We're glad you guys, hopefully, you guys are gonna read it if you haven't read it with us.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_00: It's definitely interesting.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_00: Like it's not your run-of-the-mill housewives book at all.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_02: I would 100% recommend Cobb Without a Badge over Money Lies in the Housewives.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_02: Apples and oranges.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_00: If you're interested in hearing about the T about Melissa's store, I think it's interesting to read.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_02: If you don't want Melissa on the next season of Housewives, read Money Lies in the Housewives.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_00: I just think Melissa and Joe needed something else to talk about besides like arguing with Teresa and Melissa like not being at home enough.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, how many seasons are we gonna listen to this?
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_00: Well, did that really go on for seven seasons?
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_00: What else that what else has happened with those two?
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_00: Literally nothing.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_00: I don't like Joe.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_00: You just started hating him because of the cake thing.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_00: After that, over it.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_00: But I don't see that as offensive right now because of what we read in Jackie's book.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_02: He was still a douchebag, Jack, but that's okay.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_02: Anyway, go be a cop without a badge.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_02: It's a good one.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_02: We recommend it, and we will have more books and more podcasts.
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_02: And the premiere is right around the corner.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_02: So stay tuned for more.
- 1:19:36SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_02: Stay tuned for more Housewives Goss and Glitter.
