- 0:00Speaker 1: Oh, we have one more hour of the program, the
- 0:04updating the baseball for you.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Right now, Houston and Detroit tied at two.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Tiger's batting with the bases loaded and two outs on
- 0:11the top of the eighth inning. Most of the scoring
- 0:13has happened late in this contest. In fact, a basis
- 0:18loaded walk?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Is that what?
- 0:21Speaker 1: It was? A basis loaded walk issued by Josh Is
- 0:24that well? I said, no, I guess it was just
- 0:26time called out of that. So the base is still
- 0:29loaded with two outs. Yeah, it was a basis loaded walk,
- 0:32and the Tigers have taken the lead again.
- 0:34Speaker 2: It's three to two.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Josh Hater just issued a basis loaded walk with two
- 0:38outs in the eight Spencer Torklesen drew the walk and
- 0:43has just gone on the first base in Detroit has
- 0:44now gone back in front of Houston.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It is three to two.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Is the Tiger's bat in the top of the eighth
- 0:49inning with two outs, and that against Josh Hater, the closer.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So that's what's happened in this game. I say it
- 0:57was a basis loaded walk. Torklesen went down the first back.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Had just loaded the bases there and the graphic headed
- 1:02walks to the bases are still too two. Sorry and
- 1:05mena Panicastros fans there watching on a very very small
- 1:09monitor and it didn't have the out indicator listed on there.
- 1:13They do now. It's still just two two. It's not
- 1:15a three to two boggame. It's two two. The bases
- 1:18are loaded now though, as Josh Hater issued a two outwalk,
- 1:22so Tiger still batting two to two. Top of the eighth,
- 1:26two outs. Kansas City continues to leave Baltimore. It's one
- 1:29to nothing as the Royals lead the Ools. That's in
- 1:31the top of the second inning and that contest at
- 1:35the Oriel Park at Camden Yards, So we'll keep you
- 1:38updated on those Loalgworts head coach Steve Sarkisian took part
- 1:41in the SEC teleconference today and one of the questions
- 1:48that he was asked was about the thing about learning
- 1:53to play with emotion but not play emotion is It's
- 1:56something we've heard sark mentioned quite a bit in the past.
- 2:00He says, we want our guys to play with emotion,
- 2:02but we don't want them to play emotionally, and he
- 2:05explained how he came into that mindset, Like with so
- 2:09many other things, all roads lead back to Nick Saban.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I had a hard time putting it into words. O
- 2:16Saban more eloquently used this term that I'm referencing that
- 2:21I kind of took with me because it really resonated
- 2:23with me. I didn't know how to say it, but
- 2:26I knew what he was meaning. And then once he
- 2:28said it the way that he said it, like I said,
- 2:30it resonated with me. And I've kind of carried it
- 2:32with me ever since.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Okay, all right, that was That was one thing, and
- 2:35then one other question he was asked. And there is
- 2:38a lot of experience in this, and it's all about
- 2:42the backup quarterback. When Sartan played at BYU, really, even
- 2:47when he played at El Comuno Community College in California,
- 2:52he had been a backup quarterback and then and then
- 2:55had a great sophomore season. Then he went to BYU
- 2:59and rolled in initially as a backup and then became
- 3:02the starter and had a great finish to his collegiate
- 3:04career at BYU. Since he has been the head coach
- 3:09at Texas, he has had to turn to the backup
- 3:12quarterback on several occasions.
- 3:15Speaker 2: That has happened as well. So because of that, it has.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Been a situation where he's you know, you think about
- 3:24it when he had had some card on back and
- 3:27Casey Thompson was there and all of that sort of thing.
- 3:31And of course since Quinn yours has been the starter,
- 3:35he's had to turn to the backup quarterback, but that
- 3:37was due to injury Malik Murphy having to come on
- 3:39for Quinn the last couple of seasons and then of
- 3:43course earlier the season Arch Manning having to step in
- 3:47when Quinn was injured. So he was asked about that
- 3:51and about getting the backup quarterback's reps so that they
- 3:54can be well prepared for the eventuality if he has
- 3:58to go to a backup quarterback.
- 4:00Speaker 3: And when I was a starter, I never wanted to
- 4:02backup to coming to the game, even for a play.
- 4:05And I remember my senior year of college, I have
- 4:08been banged up and the coaches wanted to run a
- 4:12quarterback draw.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Honey, you're not.
- 4:17Speaker 3: They called the play, and they called the play and
- 4:19I scored a touchdown. So you know, I've got respect
- 4:22for a guy who's the starting quarterback and the rhythm.
- 4:25Speaker 4: That it's needed to play with.
- 4:26Speaker 3: So no, that's not something I've ever entertained.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Okay, so there it is, and some thoughts there from
- 4:36Loren's head coach Steve Sarkishan.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:39Speaker 1: In Houston, it has been broken open, at least for
- 4:45the moment. A big two out bases clearing double. My
- 4:54pinch hitter Andy Abanyez has cleared off the bases and
- 4:59the Tigers have taking a five to two lead on
- 5:01the Astros. Astros just recorded the final out of the inning,
- 5:04but at Bonyez with a basis clearing double to score
- 5:08three runs, and the Astros are down the six outs
- 5:11left in their season right now, going to the bottom
- 5:13of the eight. Tigers up five to two, having one
- 5:16game one yesterday.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Three to one. We'll keep you updated on that, all right.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Coming up next, we'll visit with the play by play
- 5:22voice of the Houston Texans, Mark Vandermir, to talk about
- 5:25the Texans and their battles in the AFC South. That's
- 5:28next when we continue here on this Wednesday afternoon on
- 5:30Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio.
- 5:34My good friend Mark Vandermir, the play by play voice
- 5:36of the Houston Texans, is probably a little more advanced
- 5:39and just dealing with yacht rock like I'm a hopeless
- 5:41yacht rocker there. But Mark joins us on the hotline,
- 5:44how you doing today?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Mark?
- 5:46Speaker 4: Are you kidding? I'm all over Ambrosia.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 5:49Speaker 4: I feel like driving up to see the show myself, Ambrosia.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Are you kidding?
- 5:53Speaker 5: I love yacht rock. I remember the videos. It was
- 5:57a series on YouTube. Did you ever see these?
- 6:00Speaker 4: No, you could still search them.
- 6:02Speaker 5: They didn't have the rights to the music, so maybe
- 6:04they got sued, you know, these days, it's a little tough,
- 6:06as you know, Craig.
- 6:07Speaker 2: But I love the hot rocks.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Well, my wife and I are hopeless yacht rockers, and
- 6:12like I said, we've we've been to see Little River
- 6:14Band and several other ones like that, so we're we're
- 6:17all about it there. So it's it's good. It's good
- 6:20to know that I've got some company in that category. Hey, listen, uh,
- 6:26the City of Houston, even if they lose out on
- 6:28the Astros here and they're down to six outs left,
- 6:32or rather three outs left in their season, down five
- 6:34to two of the Tigers in the night, if they
- 6:37even if they lose out on the Astros, they've got
- 6:39a hot Texans team right now or as I would
- 6:42also like to call a resilient group, marked with the
- 6:45way they bounce back from the game against Minnesota and
- 6:48really had to be resilient the game against Jacksonville.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Didn't they Yeah, they did, Craig, and you know they didn't.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Play their best ball.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Wasn't there a game.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Defensively, they were pretty solid through out.
- 7:00Speaker 4: They had some moments. They gave up a long run,
- 7:03but the big play of the game was Caln Bullock,
- 7:05the rookie.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Safety from USC running down Tank Bigsby inside the five
- 7:10and then they come up with a goal line stand
- 7:12at the start of the fourth quarter as a result
- 7:14of that, and that tipped the scales, I thought, even
- 7:17though it was sort of hurky jerky from there until
- 7:19the final drive, if the Jaguars punched it in and
- 7:22make it the two score game, I think we might
- 7:24be having a different conversation right now. The offense just
- 7:27took a little while to get going.
- 7:29Speaker 4: But CJ. Stroud, you know, he's one of these.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Guys, Craig, and they finally have that guy where the
- 7:35opponent has to be concerned if the ball's in his
- 7:37hand with time left on the clock and they're down
- 7:41to score whatever score to tie or take the lead.
- 7:44Speaker 4: You better watch out.
- 7:45Speaker 2: And c J.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Stroud does it again, leads them down the field and
- 7:48they win the game.
- 7:48Speaker 5: So three and one is a good start, even though
- 7:50they haven't played their best ball.
- 7:51Speaker 1: CJ was where I was going next, Mark, and I
- 7:53was going to ask you last year, such an explosion
- 7:56onto the scene, and I know the expectations from when
- 7:59you drafted that. I certainly the expectation is going to
- 8:01be there. And we talked about him last year and
- 8:03he had that brilliant rookie season. Safe to say, however,
- 8:08probably teams might be more geared up, amped up to
- 8:13try to defend him, and yet he continues to play really,
- 8:16really well. So have you seen the progression on how
- 8:20he's had to make the adjustment from rookie season the
- 8:23second year player, when teams have gone and defensives has
- 8:27made their adjustments to deal with him.
- 8:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, you know, statistically it's going pretty well
- 8:33so far. I mean, when you look at the record
- 8:35three and one and he's top five in the league
- 8:37and passing yards and all that, I think everything is
- 8:40in progress very well for year two for CJ.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Stroud.
- 8:44Speaker 4: The thing is they're not scoring as many points as.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I think they would like right now, and it's not.
- 8:50Speaker 4: As efficient and proficient as they would want, and a
- 8:53lot of that has to do with the offensive line.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Stroud himself, the things he's improved at. I think the
- 8:58processing is even better this year.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I think he understands way more about the game, even
- 9:03though he understood.
- 9:04Speaker 5: A whole lot last year. And the way he's moving
- 9:06around in the pocket Craig is superior to what he
- 9:10was doing last year, avoiding the rush, trying to create
- 9:12a little extra time in real estate in the backfield
- 9:16to launch accurate throws. He's doing that so well because
- 9:19the protection hasn't been quite as good as it needs
- 9:22to be. So we'll see if they can improve on that.
- 9:25I mean, in the Minnesota game, it's just a festival
- 9:27of errors as a pre snap stuff and holding penalties.
- 9:31They had one driver where they had third and fourth
- 9:33to twenty five and they ended up punting because they
- 9:36took four consecutive penalties. So they've got to clean that up,
- 9:40and I think they are in progress doing that. The
- 9:42penalty bug bit them a little more against Jacksonville or
- 9:44again additionally, so they have time to work on it.
- 9:48You'd rather learn while winning than the other way around.
- 9:51Speaker 4: So so far, so good.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Can some of the I don't know, for one of
- 9:55a better word sluggishness on offense be trace to having
- 9:59to deal with the in rebug in the backfield, not
- 10:01having a healthy Joe Mixon for a lot of the time,
- 10:04they're getting other contributors. Those of us who have cam
- 10:06Akers on our fantasy team were happy to have him
- 10:08as a substitute.
- 10:10Speaker 2: But does that, I mean, does it?
- 10:12Speaker 1: Can some of that be traced to what there's Jill
- 10:14trying to get going with the ground game?
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:16Speaker 4: Absolutely, because Joe makeson look so good.
- 10:18Speaker 2: In the open a ram for one.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Hundred and fifty nine yards against the Colts, and you know,
- 10:22Damian Pierce only had a few carries in that game,
- 10:24but look pretty good. And we haven't seen him since either.
- 10:26So you've been.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Without your top two guys, and so now what do
- 10:30you do? Well you go to cam Akers, who I
- 10:32think looks pretty good.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Daria Goodbowally is another player to watch out where he
- 10:36cut that game winning touchdown pass. There you are, Craig
- 10:39at the end.
- 10:40Speaker 5: Of the game. Inside thirty seconds, you're at the goal line.
- 10:43You need to score and in the offset I formation
- 10:47if Daria Googbiwally and British Brooks an undrafted rookie. So
- 10:52who would have thought that at the beginning of training camp.
- 10:54But that's the NFL, that's all of football. You have
- 10:56to use everybody on the roster. You never know who's
- 10:58going to contribute. And those guys run a play that
- 11:00gets to the game winning touchdown.
- 11:02Speaker 4: It was beautiful to see and.
- 11:03Speaker 5: It's a tribute to the way they put this whole
- 11:05thing together because not just the fifty three man roster,
- 11:08the practice squad, elevating guys, how you work with the
- 11:11people in your building, in your organization to manufacture wins,
- 11:15and that's what they do and.
- 11:16Speaker 4: That's what they've been doing here in the Nick Cassario,
- 11:18Tamiko Ryan's mini era were in and I hope it continues.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Is is it safe to say that at that moment
- 11:26what you're talking about, that's when you you and Andre
- 11:29wear turn and look at each other booth and go.
- 11:31Speaker 2: These guys in the backfield, did they come through?
- 11:35Speaker 4: Well? You know, Dara had that game last year against
- 11:38Tampa Bay where he actually kicked.
- 11:40Speaker 5: A field goal because Cannie Fairbarn was hurt.
- 11:43Speaker 4: So it's so interesting the contribution he can make. And
- 11:47you know, his sister plays for Dallas and the WNBA.
- 11:49She's outstanding. So the family was there and his sister
- 11:54was here and at least is.
- 11:55Speaker 2: A great moment.
- 11:56Speaker 5: So we were never that surprised about Darry pulling off
- 11:59something big because he's the ultimate role player for this team.
- 12:03But you need people like that up and down the roster.
- 12:06You need players to make those kind of contributions that you're.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Going to win.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Talking Houston Texans football with the play by play voice
- 12:12of the Texans Mark Vandam. You're here on sports Radio
- 12:15AM thirteen hundred Zone Martin. Let me get your thoughts
- 12:17on the defense through four ball games and what you
- 12:20see you really like in the areas they're still trying
- 12:22to clean up.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Well, obviously it could have got a whole lot better
- 12:26against Minnesota, but I think that was one of those stinker.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Games, and every team has them.
- 12:30Speaker 5: It just happens and you have to correct what went wrong,
- 12:33and I hope that it doesn't happen again. They had
- 12:35some tough moments in.
- 12:36Speaker 4: That game, but they were put in a sudden change
- 12:38right off the bat with a deflected pick and the
- 12:41rest of it. They did really well.
- 12:43Speaker 5: Against the run the first two games. I thought they
- 12:45did pretty well against Jacksonville, but they still allowed over
- 12:49one hundred yards. So they're going to find a way
- 12:51to stiff in in that way. I think what you're
- 12:54looking at is the unfinished product here. Will Anderson Junior
- 12:58two and a half sacks, good start for him.
- 13:00Speaker 4: The d tackles. They replaced the starters last year, and
- 13:04I think.
- 13:04Speaker 5: They're off to a pretty good start. But it's going
- 13:06to get better when you get the Nico Autry back
- 13:09from a suspension in a couple of games, because he
- 13:11can play the outside.
- 13:12Speaker 4: And the inside on the D line, and I think
- 13:14that's really gonna help.
- 13:15Speaker 5: You. Get Kurt Heinisch back this week. I think that's
- 13:18gonna help as well. Daniel Hunters Hunter has been good,
- 13:21but not who he will be.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Just yet for this team, so I think it's good.
- 13:25Speaker 2: On the front.
- 13:26Speaker 5: Aziz al Shier is just amazing. I mean, what an
- 13:29amazing guy, really good player. Played with Demiko in San
- 13:33Francisco for for Jamiko, I should say, but he's like
- 13:36Demko Ryans Junior and the secondary.
- 13:38Speaker 4: What can I say about.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Derrick Stingley, Junior outstanding lassater of the rookie from Georgia.
- 13:42Klen Bullock had a pick at his first ever game.
- 13:44He had that player that just talked about rookie safety.
- 13:47Speaker 4: So a lot of youth and I think that it's
- 13:49only going.
- 13:50Speaker 2: To get better, Craig, as they.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Play together and really start to.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Gel without question, no doubt.
- 13:56Speaker 1: The game, the headline game of this upcoming week in
- 14:00the NFL is the game you have against the Buffalo
- 14:03Bills on Sunday. How about your I remember last year
- 14:06during the playoffs we were talking about a Buffalo. But
- 14:08let me get your thoughts on this Bills team and
- 14:11they come off smarting a little bit after what happened
- 14:13to them in Baltimore last Sunday night.
- 14:15Speaker 2: How about your thoughts on this matchup with Buffalo.
- 14:19Speaker 4: It's always tough with Josh Allen because he's so good
- 14:22throwing and running, and he's one of these guys. You know,
- 14:25he's not Lamar Jackson.
- 14:26Speaker 5: They're different, but it's similar in that you have to
- 14:29worry about them running and throw it.
- 14:31Speaker 4: And I think with Alan, he's so physically.
- 14:34Speaker 5: So big, he's hard to bring down. You got to
- 14:37bring some friends to bring him down, and he's always
- 14:40a big part of their rushing attack, so that is
- 14:43highly notable when you play them.
- 14:45Speaker 4: They've replaced a lot.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Of guys on defense, and you know, I know the
- 14:48Ravens game didn't go according to their liking, but they
- 14:52got off to a pretty good start prior to that,
- 14:54and some of these defenders were playing pretty well. Now
- 14:56they've got some injuries that they got to deal with.
- 14:59I think what the Texas have to do, Craig, it's
- 15:01almost like the Longhorse, right, the long Horns are back, right,
- 15:04the long Horns are a hunted Now you have to
- 15:06get used to being the hunted, the team that everybody
- 15:09wants to be now. I guess with the Longhorns, people always.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Want to beat the Longhorse, So maybe that's the best example.
- 15:13But the Texans kind of snuck up on people just
- 15:16to use like outside looking in language last year. This year,
- 15:20they're not going to sneak up on anybody. But you
- 15:22have to be able to hold surf.
- 15:23Speaker 5: If you're one of these teams at home, you've got
- 15:26to be able to protect the turf and play another
- 15:28AFC quote power and deal with it. That's that the
- 15:31Texans deserve to be considered.
- 15:32Speaker 4: An AFC power yet, but they want to be that,
- 15:35and they do have the juice and the tools to
- 15:37be that. So go do it.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Go be it and beat the Buffalo Bills this week.
- 15:41And I think it's a marquee game for sure.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Texans have a ton of.
- 15:44Speaker 5: Primetime games, you know, with the Hall of Fame game,
- 15:47they have seven National Window games when you go back
- 15:50to the preseason, and they already played the Bears on
- 15:52Sunday Night Football. They got some good ones coming up,
- 15:55including a Dallas Monday Night or up in Big d
- 15:58in November. So it's all going to be really fun
- 16:00to watch. And it's a week to week.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Thing, as you know. I mean, every week feels like
- 16:04it's own little drama and season.
- 16:06Speaker 1: You know, Mark, One of the things I always enjoy
- 16:08visiting with you about is also the college game as well,
- 16:10because of your years as the voice of the Miami Hurricanes.
- 16:12Speaker 2: But do you still keep up with.
- 16:14Speaker 1: The Canes and where you on edge on that hail
- 16:16Merry thing that happened at the end of the game
- 16:18with Virginia Tech last weekend.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Not only do I keep up, but I'm listening to
- 16:23both radio calls. I'm listening to my buddies Josephaky and
- 16:26Don Bailey. I'm listening to Bill Roth of Virginia Tech
- 16:30to trying to get the different perspectives of things. So
- 16:33I was totally keeping up with that one. And I
- 16:35do keep up with the Canes as much as I can.
- 16:38You know, Craig, they haven't done anything since I've been there.
- 16:41I'm just going but.
- 16:43Speaker 4: They haven't had that kind of success that.
- 16:45Speaker 5: They feel is their standard, you know, And they've had
- 16:48some great starts and then they fizzle out.
- 16:50Speaker 4: So I thought, oh no, we're going to get another
- 16:52one of.
- 16:52Speaker 2: These when they were.
- 16:53Speaker 5: Down in that game, but they came back and won
- 16:56and you've probably watched.
- 16:57Speaker 4: But the quarterback ward is really good, so that can
- 17:00heal a lot of wounds. So I'm looking forward to
- 17:03seeing what they do the rest of the way.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it'd be a lot of fun.
- 17:05Speaker 1: But I'll tell you what, a lot of folks looking
- 17:07forward to this matchup on Sunday between the Texans and
- 17:09the Bills, and I'm right there at the top of
- 17:11the list, especially on an.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Open I gotta say though, before we say goodbye, I
- 17:15was at the Longhorn opener. My son is now at
- 17:20McComb School of Business, University of Texas. Okay, he's a freshman.
- 17:23And I went to the game and we listened to you.
- 17:27Speaker 2: We had you on the app.
- 17:28Speaker 5: And it's a great experience, unbelievable. And you know, I
- 17:31hadn't been to a Longhorn game in a while, so
- 17:33it was a lot of fun for me.
- 17:34Speaker 4: And he is so into it now he's bleeding burnt
- 17:37orange and it's a lot of fun.
- 17:38Speaker 2: All right.
- 17:39Speaker 1: The next time you do that, give me some notice,
- 17:41so we let me know you're coming. So we'd love
- 17:43to have you pop upstairs and say him, bring you
- 17:45some with us.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Listen. If he's in the Macomb school. The dude is
- 17:49serious about his academics. I'll just say that, you know,
- 17:53and you know that right all over it.
- 17:55Speaker 4: He's all over it. He is not like his dad
- 17:57put it that way. He is, oh diligent. He got
- 18:01elected to some freshman senate day. I mean, he's really
- 18:03into it. So it's fun. It's a great school. I
- 18:05love walking to campus, you know, I felt like, hey,
- 18:09this is a walking school. You know. He lives over
- 18:11on the West side and we walked all the way
- 18:13across campus, but.
- 18:14Speaker 2: It wasn't far.
- 18:14Speaker 4: I think it's a great place to go to school, obviously, and.
- 18:18Speaker 5: And you know, a great program and what a tremendous atmosphere.
- 18:21Speaker 4: So I'll look forward to going to some more games.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it'll be fun. It'd be great to see
- 18:24you again. Hey, have a great call this Sunday. Looking
- 18:27forward to the matchup, and I'll look forward to visiting
- 18:29with you again down the road.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I appreciate you taking the time, Mark, Thanks so much, Craig.
- 18:33Speaker 1: All right, you bet that's Mark Vandermere, play by play
- 18:36voice of the Houston Texans.
- 18:38Speaker 2: That's right.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And I knew that he had a son at you
- 18:42t had to know he was in the McCombs school.
- 18:43And I have to see my great guy. Always good
- 18:46to visit with him. And and the Texans got it,
- 18:51got it going right now, you like, are you impressed
- 18:54by what you've seen Khalil from the Houston Texans through
- 18:58four ball games? They're one loss uh is uh is
- 19:02to the Vikings a really good Vikings did.
- 19:05Speaker 6: Yeah, they're a real team. Yeah, I'm I'm pretty much.
- 19:08I'm very impressed Strouds killing it. I thought they would
- 19:11use digs more, and they're starting to use them a
- 19:14bit more. I think that he's an underused weapon for them.
- 19:17I've noticed sank Dale's taken a bit of the of
- 19:19a back seat their defense. Uh, I had to drop
- 19:23their defense in fantasy. Honestly, they were awful against the Jags.
- 19:27They they kind of snuck out of there with that win.
- 19:29But I think they're gonna be one of those teams
- 19:31that progressively gets better instead of staying in like the same, same,
- 19:35same level all season long. So I think they're I
- 19:38think they're in a good situation.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Good teams can find a way to win when they
- 19:43don't play their best, and I and I think that.
- 19:46I think that's the case. Obviously for the Houston Texans.
- 19:48They're in my opinion that well, it didn't have to be.
- 19:52In my opinion, they are far and away the best
- 19:55team in the AFC South. We'll see where it goes
- 19:58from there. Anyone else has gone, it's gone final in Houston.
- 20:02The Houston Astros season is over done, Benito. How about
- 20:08the Astros being swept on their home field in two
- 20:12straight by the Detroit Tigers.
- 20:15Speaker 2: They win this afternoon five to two.
- 20:17Speaker 1: The Tigers had that three run double by a Bonyees
- 20:20in the top of the eighth inning, and that was
- 20:22the separator. Houston actually had a two to one league
- 20:25but the Astros when they look back at it, they
- 20:27have three total runs scored in the two games combined,
- 20:33three total runs scored, and that ultimately is the undoing
- 20:38for Houston.
- 20:39Speaker 2: So their season is over.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Ranger fans like Cameron Parker and the other ones and
- 20:45my cards can rejoice, right, they're shot in fouts and overdrive.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Now it was a quick kill.
- 20:51Speaker 1: It was very, very quick and the Tigers, and what
- 20:55an interesting divisional series matchup you'll have belt matchup Detroit
- 21:02and Cleveland. I like it at two old school American
- 21:07League teams. I know, Cleveland goes by the Guardians. Now
- 21:10they're no longer the Indians, but it's still it's Cleveland.
- 21:12It's old school stuff. And so to be Detroit and Cleveland,
- 21:17and then whoever wins the Kansas City Baltimore. So here
- 21:20we'll go to New York and play the Yankees. So
- 21:23Astros are out and stunningly knocked out in two straight
- 21:28at Minute May Park by the Detroit Tigers, who win
- 21:32it all right, we'll keep you updated on the other
- 21:35game as well. We're gonna hear more from long worn
- 21:38men's basketball coach Rodney Terry as well.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Coming up. That's coming up.
- 21:42Speaker 1: We continue here on sports Medio AM thirteen under the
- 21:44zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Mark Vandermire played by Playboy.
- 21:47Speaker 1: So the Houston Texans for joining us there, and he
- 21:49said he loved ambrosia, so we throw back with a
- 21:52roll back here with a little more ambrosie here with
- 21:55you're the only woman there. So yeah, so going to
- 21:59that tomorrow night, so we'll see that. Somebody mentioned on
- 22:04the text line he said Journey nineteen eighty three Brian
- 22:07Adams was the opening act. I still left the T shirt.
- 22:09It's a little snug these days. I sold those T
- 22:12shirts that went on the on the road with Journey.
- 22:17We did City Park Stadium in New Orleans because they
- 22:20couldn't come to an agreement with the Superdome, so it
- 22:22was outdoor venue on the fourth of July, pouring rain.
- 22:26But we did that Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dallas, Houston, Norman, Oklahoma, Wichidaw, Kansas,
- 22:37Vegas for three nights at the Aladdin Theater. Let's see
- 22:43and then up into the Pacific northwest to Poka Tella, Idaho,
- 22:49and Boise, Idaho.
- 22:50Speaker 2: When we were in Pocatello, Brian Adams.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Was the lead act and he was a real he
- 22:58was just getting started and he was a real down
- 23:00to earth guy. This is how down to earth Brian
- 23:01Adams was. When we flew from New Orleans to Dallas,
- 23:05Me and the other three guys that I worked with
- 23:08on my particular crew with this with the T shirt
- 23:11vending thing working for the band. Brian Adams flew with
- 23:16us on Southwest Airlines. This is you know, he became
- 23:20a mega rock star, but he was just starting out then.
- 23:23That was when his first album and cuts like an
- 23:25Ikea and all that, and he was sitting on the
- 23:28sitting on the plane with us, just regular guy chatting
- 23:30with us. By the time we got to Pocatella, Idaho,
- 23:33U he had seen a few things and was pretty
- 23:39pretty loose with his conversation to the extent that he
- 23:42got up on stage opening up for Journey and what
- 23:46was then called the Mini Dome. It's a it's one
- 23:49of those old fashioned older dome stadiums.
- 23:52Speaker 2: It was concrete. It looks like an airplane hangar seats like.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Fifteen thousand, and they would hang the old post for
- 24:00the football team Idaho State plays at home football games there,
- 24:03they'd hang up from cables from the season the ceiling.
- 24:06There was no bottom bar that went up to the
- 24:08crossbar and it would just hang from the ceiling like that.
- 24:12We saw that at both ends. Always remember that. And
- 24:15it was called the Mini gone back there. It's got
- 24:16a corporate name on it now. But he was up
- 24:18there and he gets on stage, he goes, Poka jell Idaho,
- 24:21how about you sput?
- 24:22Speaker 2: Butts hey sput.
- 24:24Speaker 1: But people were kind of like kind of like is
- 24:27he kidding or what? But yeah, Brian Adams was the
- 24:32opening act. So there you go. So anyway, that was
- 24:41some memories there, and like I said, we're going to
- 24:43see and broschamor I let's hear some more from Long
- 24:47Worts basketball coach Rodney Terry, who's asked about a couple
- 24:50of guys, including Jason Kent is another guy that they're
- 24:55pretty excited about in his development.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Yes, Sid, I'll tell you what.
- 25:00Speaker 7: Uh you know Jason Kent, you know known his dad
- 25:02a long time dad was a was was a coach
- 25:05here at Houston Jellison at one time.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Mom worked on our campus at one time as.
- 25:10Speaker 7: Well, so very familiar with with the forty acres. He himself,
- 25:15going on, played a couple of years at Bradley, played
- 25:18the last two years in Indiana State. But he's one
- 25:20of those guys again that can make an open shot.
- 25:23He's an elite cutter, you know, we pride ourselves to
- 25:26being a really good cutting team. He's a space that
- 25:29got floor guy, a really good offensive rebounder, you know,
- 25:34has a body to play physical and get up and
- 25:36down the floor, you know, and stuff. So I think
- 25:38he brings that along with obviously a lot of experience
- 25:41as well, you know, and and hopefully the guy that
- 25:44wants to continue to try to play with the chip.
- 25:45Speaker 2: On the shoulder. Now.
- 25:46Speaker 1: One thing that coaches always stress and they talk about
- 25:49quite a bit is rebounding. The the art, the science,
- 25:53the effort, everything about rebounding. And Kirk bowles from the
- 25:57Austin American instead way it used to be the Austin
- 25:59Americans say are now the Houston Chronicle, Kirk asked Roddy
- 26:03about rebounding.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Does he want to see more out of.
- 26:05Speaker 1: His guys in terms of you know, crashing the boards
- 26:08and getting to the glass and getting rebounds.
- 26:10Speaker 7: A season, I think every team in the country goes
- 26:13into the year worrying about rebounding. Because what makes you
- 26:16a great team, makes you a great team, you got
- 26:18to be a team that takes care of the basketball.
- 26:20You don't beat yourselves, right, So value and taking care
- 26:23of the basketball. Physical mindset that allows you to play physical,
- 26:28all five guys blocking out, rebounding down, you know. You know,
- 26:33we want to try to play fast as well, where
- 26:36every time down we want to want.
- 26:37Speaker 2: To get a shot.
- 26:38Speaker 7: But and then you know, obviously having a really good defense,
- 26:41you know, and a big part of having a really
- 26:43good defense and finishing possessions is being.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Able to block out. So you know, we work at it.
- 26:48Speaker 7: We've got a great strength coach that's really done a
- 26:50great job with our guys body over the course of
- 26:52the summer to hope they give them a mindset to
- 26:55come out and have application on the floor to play physical.
- 26:59You know, when that's shot goes up, you look to
- 27:01hit somebody. If you don't get the rebound, your man
- 27:04doesn't get it, you know, and stuff. So a lot
- 27:06of times it's not the biggest team. We could roll
- 27:08out six you know, three or four or five seven
- 27:10footers does no good for us, Right, It's what's in
- 27:13your chest in terms of if you want to do it,
- 27:16can't you want to play physical, It doesn't matter what
- 27:18size you are, you know what I mean, we got
- 27:19good size, you know and stuff. But I do think,
- 27:23you know, on the perimeter, we've got good size. I
- 27:25think our guards are rebound down really well for us,
- 27:27and that'll be a plus for us because we'll be
- 27:30able to get up and down the floor and play
- 27:32fast the way we want to.
- 27:34Speaker 1: All right, And then there were a couple of questions
- 27:36about this new world that the Logworts are going into
- 27:40into the Southeastern Conference. One of the questions asked point
- 27:43blank was did he feel that the Big twelve is
- 27:48a better basketball.
- 27:50Speaker 2: League than the SEC?
- 27:51Speaker 1: Because the Big tef is, you know, it's got some
- 27:53good basketball programs in it and it's made some runs.
- 27:56And so it was asked, does he think that the
- 27:58SEC is behind the Big twelve conference in terms of basketball?
- 28:01And Rodney was saying absolutely not.
- 28:03Speaker 7: I think the SEC, you know, obviously has great leadership,
- 28:08with Greg saying he's done a great job came really
- 28:12building up the profile of the of the SEC from
- 28:15top to bottom of no Knights, all the great coaches,
- 28:19really good venues to play in, and really good players
- 28:22in the SEC. So they put eight teams in the
- 28:24tournament the last two years in.
- 28:26Speaker 2: The Big Twelve.
- 28:28Speaker 7: You know, we had eight teams in the tournament this
- 28:30past year. We had seven the year before. So you know,
- 28:34there's no drop off in the SEC. Man, We're right
- 28:37at the top. Were one of the best leagues in
- 28:38the country on basketball.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Stam one okay, and then one other thing about the
- 28:42SEC and just kind of diving into what the styles
- 28:45of play, and Rodney was asked, I do you notice
- 28:48anything appreciably different about how the SEC goes about its.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Business and playing as opposed to the Big Twelve?
- 28:54Speaker 7: Well, they think again, if you if you really get
- 28:56down to it now you're talking about you know what
- 28:58translates and tournament. You know, is the Big twelve more
- 29:03physical than the SEC? You know who files the most
- 29:07right when you when you get to the NCAA tournament.
- 29:10Speaker 2: You know, I think you start looking at those kind
- 29:11of things.
- 29:12Speaker 7: But I think there are teams in the SEC that
- 29:14play extremely physical. I mean We played Tennessee the last
- 29:17three years and been easily the probably the most physical
- 29:20team we've played on our schedule, you know and everything.
- 29:22So you know, I think there's you know, on any
- 29:25given night, you're gonna have to deal with some physicality.
- 29:27You have to deal with teams that could, you know,
- 29:29push the ball really fast in transitioning, the teams that
- 29:32can really score the ball.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Yeah, And as a result of that, they'll played Tennessee
- 29:37again now in conference play. Tennessee will come to Austin
- 29:40for one game after they have played them in some
- 29:45prior years and that, Hey, I want to do something
- 29:47before we get to the break here. Last week, all
- 29:52week long, we gave away opportunities, opportunities to win a
- 29:57pair of tickets to see Deftones, and we're going to
- 30:00do it again March twelfth at Moody Center. So what
- 30:04you do is, if you haven't already downloaded the iHeartRadio app,
- 30:07really easy to do and it's free.
- 30:08Speaker 2: You do that.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Then you search AM thirteen under the zone and you'll
- 30:11see the button with a little microphone. Little red button's
- 30:14got the microphone, and you tap that and you leave
- 30:16us a message with the keyword you heard on Monday,
- 30:19it was Deftones. Tuesday was Zone. Today's keyword moody. Moody
- 30:25is today's keyword, and so you leave us a voice
- 30:29message on our talkback features and hey, I was listening today.
- 30:32I heard the keyword is moody. And you'll be entered
- 30:35into the drawings as simple as that. We'll be back
- 30:38to wrap up today's edition of the program on sports
- 30:40Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. Updating the baseball going
- 30:46on right now in Baltimore. Kansas City continues to lead
- 30:50the Orioles one nothing. They go to the fifth. A
- 30:52great diving play by the second baseman Michael Massey with
- 30:57runners at first and second and went out, prevented a
- 30:59run from Austin the play, he was able to get
- 31:01an out at first, there were two in scoring position,
- 31:03and then a fly ball out into the inning. So
- 31:05it's still won nothing Kansas City as that goes to
- 31:08the top of the fifth.
- 31:09Speaker 2: If they win that game.
- 31:12Speaker 1: The Royals will have swept the Orioles on the road
- 31:16in Baltimore to move on, just like the Detroit.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Tigers did this afternoon. In case you didn't hear it.
- 31:21Speaker 1: The Tigers got a three run pinch hit double in
- 31:28the top of the eighth inning, and that brooke a
- 31:30two to two tie. They were actually down two to
- 31:33one going to the eighth. Then they had one run
- 31:34score on a wild pitch, and then the double coming
- 31:37off Josh Hater allowed three runs to score and the
- 31:41Tigers beat the Astros five to two.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Houston swept on its own field. They're done.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Season over season over, so right now, Danny Columbay is
- 31:50pitching for the Orioles as Kansas City bats in the
- 31:53top of the fifth and it's won nothing Royals as
- 31:56they bat.
- 31:56Speaker 2: In the top half of the fifth inning.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Detroit, by virtue of sweeping Houston, now goes to Cleveland
- 32:03that starts this week. Year old, your eyes lit up
- 32:05on that one. I told you that Khalil that they're
- 32:07going to play the Guardians of Tigers and Guardians Cleveland
- 32:10Detroit old school Russ.
- 32:12Speaker 2: I love it. I love the Vision Series matchup.
- 32:14Speaker 6: Were teams that were bad for a long time finally
- 32:18have their day.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I love seeing it. Yeah, well, it's it's happening, and.
- 32:25Speaker 1: The Yankees are awaiting the winner of this Baltimore Kansas City.
- 32:29Here by the way, in case you're won about the Yankees.
- 32:31Last time the Yankees won a World Series two thousand
- 32:34and nine. It's been fifteen years since the Yankees have
- 32:39won a series. I remember when the Dodgers won in
- 32:40twenty twenty, people said, I had the Dodgers would allow
- 32:42us to know first time in thirty two years.
- 32:45Speaker 2: They had not won since nineteen eighty eight.
- 32:47Speaker 1: So obviously I was very very excited about that when
- 32:50it did, when it did happen, about that, But Baltimore
- 32:53hasn't won a World Series since nineteen eighty three. The
- 32:55Royals won in twenty fifteen. This is their first postseason
- 32:58appearance since twenty fifteen when they won the World Series.
- 33:02Of course, Cleveland has not won the World Series since
- 33:05nineteen forty eight, longest gap. Remember they had the three
- 33:09to one lead on the Cubs in twenty sixteen and
- 33:11it got away from them. Well, now they will match
- 33:16up with the Detroit Tigers in a Division series. Listen,
- 33:19I'm out for the next two days, this being the
- 33:22open date. I'm taking care of a couple of personal
- 33:24business things. And then then I, like I said, We're
- 33:27going to yacht rocket up to the Metroplex tomorrow and
- 33:31see Ambrosia and john Ford Coley will do that.
- 33:35Speaker 2: But just going to enjoy a weekend.
- 33:36Speaker 1: I'll be back on Monday, starting with our long Worns
- 33:41Monday bringing you Coach Sarks news conference. Hopefully Cameron Parker
- 33:46will be back tomorrow Andrew Zimma will be in as well.
- 33:48Thank you, Khalil, appreciate you stepping into
