- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37We believe that most of the prophecy that we read in
- 0:40Revelation has yet to be fulfilled and it awaits future
- 0:43fulfillment. We look at everything from
- 0:46chapter 4 to the end of the book as a very short period before
- 0:50the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. The main point though, when we
- 0:54study this book is to realize that the Book of Revelation was
- 0:58written to be understood, not to confuse people.
- 1:01There is much light that can be given to you as you study this
- 1:04book. My great grandmother loved
- 1:06puzzles. Despite her dementia.
- 1:08She could knock out a puzzle quicker than most and attempted
- 1:12many puzzles, some big, some small, and all with varying
- 1:16success. Without the box, however, it
- 1:19becomes much more difficult. Similarly, the Book of
- 1:23Revelation becomes difficult to comprehend without an
- 1:26understanding of the bigger picture.
- 1:29In today's message, Pastor Clark helps us start to assemble the
- 1:32pieces of John's visions that he has recorded in this final book
- 1:37of the Bible. Now here's Pastor Clark in the
- 1:40Book of Revelation chapter one with today's edition of Living
- 1:44Waters of Grace. The Book of Revelation.
- 1:47A lot of different views and different parts of the body of
- 1:50Christ. Confusion for some people.
- 1:53Some people getting arguments and debates about what this book
- 1:56means or what it's all about. I'm not going to do that.
- 1:59I'm not interested in arguing about the Bible, you know, I
- 2:03just want to follow the Lord. Just have a simple walk with the
- 2:07Lord and love him and do what he tells me to do and not argue
- 2:10about things that people seem to get uptight about.
- 2:13So we want to approach the book from a very practical point of
- 2:16view, a very simple point of view, and at the same time do
- 2:20justice to the theology and the history and the teachings of
- 2:24this book by the person of the Holy Spirit.
- 2:28So I'm going to give you some background information today,
- 2:30and I hope it won't prove boring to you, but I think it's
- 2:33important to have a infrastructure of basis, a
- 2:36foundation of understanding the book and what it is conveying.
- 2:40The word revelation comes from the Greek word called the
- 2:44Apocalypse and that is the unveiling and the uncovering of
- 2:48what has not yet been seen or revealed up until the time that
- 2:51this book has been given by the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:55It's called the Revelation of Jesus Christ.
- 2:58Now the Apostle John wrote this book as he was spoken to by the
- 3:02Angel of God and at times Jesus Christ directly.
- 3:07And as a result of that we have some similarities that we can
- 3:11draw upon from some of his style of writing.
- 3:14He's the one that wrote the Gospel of John.
- 3:17He also wrote the three epistles.
- 3:19Of course, John the Apostle, the beloved one of Jesus Christ, He
- 3:22had a tremendous relationship with the Lord.
- 3:25And so this book, as it says in first one, the revelation of
- 3:29Jesus Christ, which God gave to him to show his servants things
- 3:32which must shortly take place, things will eventually soon take
- 3:37place. There's four approaches or views
- 3:40historically of how to interpret this Book of Revelation being
- 3:44predictive prophecy. The first reference that I want
- 3:47to share is called the historic approach.
- 3:50And the historic approach was sort of the Protestant view of a
- 3:55lot of people down through the ages, from the time that John
- 3:58wrote this book till the fulfillment of the second coming
- 4:01of Christ at the end of time. The people that take the
- 4:05historic approach look at the fulfillment of the truths and
- 4:08revelation as a process of progress going from the time of
- 4:14Christ's ascension to the time that he returns.
- 4:18And this has been unfolding over the last 2000 years.
- 4:22That's an approach. Another view is the preterist
- 4:25view and the preterist believe there's two types of preterist,
- 4:28the full preterist and the partial preterist.
- 4:31The full preterist would actually say that everything in
- 4:34Revelation has already been fulfilled.
- 4:37That's crazy. But they believe the second
- 4:38coming of Christ occurred after the destruction of Jerusalem in
- 4:42AD 70 and that we're living in a Kingdom age now.
- 4:45And I don't know about you, but if this is a Kingdom age, I'm
- 4:47going to have to like look for a different savior because this
- 4:50ain't working, right? So for me, that's absurd.
- 4:52You know, I've met people to have that view and it's
- 4:55heretical. I remember Paul declaring about
- 4:58those in the time that he was living that proclaimed that the
- 5:03Lord had come and that the people had missed the rapture.
- 5:06And I mean this. And he said that these people
- 5:08come to overthrow the faith of the week and they're not
- 5:12biblical people. Also, we have the view of
- 5:15partial preterist and partial preterist.
- 5:17See the final chapters of the Book of Revelation yet to be
- 5:20revealed. So they're obviously not in the
- 5:23same camp as full preterist. They are looking forward to the
- 5:26second coming of Christ. I think like the Bible answer,
- 5:29man Hank, he's one of those guys that are considering himself as
- 5:32a partial preterist. I don't know when people call
- 5:35themselves a Bible answer man, and they claim that they're
- 5:38speaking for everyone that believes the Bible, think it's
- 5:41shaky. I think he has some valuable
- 5:43things to say, but there's some things that he says that I don't
- 5:46think you're rooted in sound biblical exegesis.
- 5:50And then there's a spiritual approach.
- 5:52And this is the group of people that look at everything in
- 5:54Revelation is symbolism or allegory.
- 5:57They see it as a drama depicting transcendent spiritual
- 6:01realities. They see these historical events
- 6:04throughout the ages rather than time specific fulfillments.
- 6:08And they believe that revelation can be a part of any age.
- 6:11So those are three of the major views.
- 6:14Our view is a futuristic approach and nowadays people
- 6:18that you listen to on the radio that you might like or respect,
- 6:22like of course, Chuck Smith, Calvary Chapel, John MacArthur,
- 6:26Charles Stanley, Chuck Swindoll, guys that you hear on the radio
- 6:30that are still sound, David, Jeremiah that are very similar
- 6:34in their approach and teaching the word that we are here all
- 6:37are futuristic exegetical Bible teachers.
- 6:41And so we believe that most of the prophecy that we read in
- 6:44Revelation has yet to be fulfilled and it awaits future
- 6:48fulfillment. We look at everything from
- 6:51chapter 4 to the end of the book as a very short period before
- 6:55the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. The main point, though, when we
- 6:58study this book is to realize that the Book of Revelation was
- 7:02written to be understood, not to confuse people.
- 7:05There's much light that can be given to you as you study this
- 7:09book, as we study it in the light of other prophetical books
- 7:12like Daniel, Ezekiel, Joel, and others.
- 7:16So when you're studying this book, we encourage that, as John
- 7:20promised, there's a special blessing for those who read this
- 7:23book and hear the book and do what it says.
- 7:27So that's the most important thing.
- 7:29Now, when we look at futuristic events, they are, to be honest
- 7:33with you, somewhat obscure. When you read certain things,
- 7:36you sort of in your own mind, think, well, how will this come
- 7:39the past and how will this actually work out?
- 7:41And you have some questions, which is good.
- 7:44And if you have questions as opposed to thinking you know it
- 7:46all, that's a good thing because you want to approach this book
- 7:49with humility, understanding that there's still some things
- 7:53that need to come to pass. And you'll definitely know them
- 7:56after they come to pass. But before they come to pass,
- 7:59sometimes you know, you're looking through a glass starkly.
- 8:01You just don't know for sure yet.
- 8:02But the bottom line we one thing we do know for sure is that
- 8:05Christ is coming back again. He promised he would come back
- 8:09again. So to gain a correct
- 8:11understanding of this book, first of all you have to
- 8:14recognize that this book was written as an epistle to a
- 8:17certain group of churches at the time that the apostle John was
- 8:21living. It was very, very important, the
- 8:24things that he was addressing because they were given to him
- 8:27by Jesus Christ. And the churches at that time
- 8:30were in disarray just like they are today.
- 8:32You could take those seven churches of Revelation and
- 8:35compare them to churches in our time and you could say, well,
- 8:38what kind of church is Calvary Chapel, you know, and you would
- 8:41be able to hopefully look at that list and line us up with
- 8:45hopefully the Church of Philadelphia that still has a
- 8:47little faith and is persevering. Hopefully you wouldn't say,
- 8:51well, recoveries like Laodicea, that would be a real horrible
- 8:55thing to be in a church like that prior to the return of the
- 8:59Lord. But in the last days, it talks
- 9:01about many falling away from the faith as we've studied in Jude
- 9:04and the epistles of John, giving heed to seducing spirits and
- 9:08doctrines of demons, people who are believing things today that
- 9:11they wouldn't have believed 20 years ago.
- 9:13And so I believe that we are moving more toward the days of
- 9:17Laodicea. Matter of fact, it says when the
- 9:19Son of Man comes, he says, well, I even find faith on the earth.
- 9:24And this the great falling away is the tragic thing where people
- 9:28will no longer value the truths of the word of God.
- 9:31They'll no longer find a need to worship God.
- 9:34They'll have many other things that are capturing their
- 9:36attention and they'll begin to slip away from what is really,
- 9:39really important. But this book addresses the
- 9:42specific needs and interests and issues at the time that it was
- 9:46written, what these people were actually going through.
- 9:48But it also needs to be understood how it's applied to
- 9:52the circumstances and the days that we're also living.
- 9:55And if you look at the book that way, then you're able to more
- 9:58objectively transfer certain truths to our own times with our
- 10:04own specific needs and issues. So Revelation is a book of
- 10:08prophecy that's designed to encourage you, to warn you, and
- 10:14to comfort you. Now, if you're a believer today
- 10:17and you're walking with the Lord, and as the old hymn says,
- 10:20it's well with my soul, you can be totally engulfed in
- 10:24everything this book's teaching because you're anticipating and
- 10:26looking forward to the return of the Lord.
- 10:28If you're backslidden or you're not following the Lord or you
- 10:32don't know Christ yet, this book can be a horror for you because
- 10:36it will begin to expose you to some very, very serious things
- 10:40that await those who are without Christ.
- 10:43And if it's what brings you to Christ and gets you saved,
- 10:45that's a good thing. You know, God doesn't use
- 10:48illustrations to destroy you. He writes these things that you
- 10:52might be saved. So chapter 2 and three, as we
- 10:56will eventually look at that will give us a history of the
- 10:58testimony, as I said, of the seven churches of Asia Minor.
- 11:02But as I said, this message of revelation is given to comfort
- 11:05the persecuted people at the time that they were living.
- 11:08The persecution on the face of the earth during the days of the
- 11:11apostles was unbelievable. The Roman Empire was evil.
- 11:15All it wanted to do was destroy and martyr the Christians.
- 11:18And so John is writing this book not only to educate them about
- 11:23what's going to eventually happen, to comfort those who are
- 11:26persecuted, afflicted in their righteous walks, and also called
- 11:31a repentance to those who are straying.
- 11:34So chapters 4 through 22 will give you a predictive analysis
- 11:38of the events that will be occurring after these things are
- 11:42established. Now, the Book of Revelation is
- 11:45apocalyptic literature. As you see this, you might say,
- 11:47man, what in the world is that? It looks like some guy's on an
- 11:49LSD trip or something. You know, it's just very, very
- 11:52bizarre, the symbolism and the metaphors that are used in that
- 11:56kind of stuff. It's like other than this world,
- 11:59but as we study it, we're going to see that even though it's
- 12:02apocalyptic and it's expanse, it's very, very practical and
- 12:06many things can be actually seen as literal.
- 12:09Apocalyptic literature during the time of John was very
- 12:12popular. There was other books that were
- 12:14written that weren't considered part of the Canon or the Bible
- 12:18that we have today. And so they talked and they use
- 12:20this kind of writing back then and it reveals certain mysteries
- 12:24about heaven and earth, about man and God, about angels and
- 12:28demons and the life of the world today and the world to come.
- 12:31So all these things are part of what you're going to be getting
- 12:34exposed to in this book. It's a very, very important
- 12:37book, especially for these days that we're living.
- 12:40The book was written in the times of intense persecution
- 12:43somewhere around 96 AD, where you had different Antiochus
- 12:48Epiphanes, you had Cyrus, you had Nero and had Dormition.
- 12:53These different world rulers at the time were Roman empires and
- 12:57they were ungodly. And so their whole focus was to
- 13:00destroy this new group of people called Christians.
- 13:04John talks in verse 9. He says I'm your brother and
- 13:07companion in this tribulation and Kingdom and patience of
- 13:11Jesus Christ. So he's in the situation himself
- 13:13as well of understanding the times that they're living in,
- 13:17great suffering at that time and also great suffering that's
- 13:21lying ahead for those who will still be on the earth after the
- 13:25rapture, martyrdom, recurring theme throughout this book, the
- 13:29number of people who have died for their faith since the
- 13:32inception of the gospel. Is this unbelievable?
- 13:35We're fortunate enough to live in a country where at this point
- 13:38in time, we're not being hung on crosses or burning oil.
- 13:42Now, what's interesting here, these seven churches were in
- 13:45what today is considered modern Turkey.
- 13:48Now, if anybody knows anything about Turkey today, it's
- 13:50primarily an Islamic country. 90% of the population in Turkey
- 13:57is Islam. There's only a few Orthodox
- 14:00Christians left there in that country.
- 14:02And that country initially was one of the Seas of the early
- 14:05church. Constantinople, one of the
- 14:07largest churches built in our history, was built in that
- 14:11particular country. And now it's this, a museum.
- 14:15But as we look in this book, the vision of John is imagery that
- 14:20you just in your own mind, outside of looking at Movies
- 14:23Now, going to the theater, we're all familiar with monsters and
- 14:27Dragons and that kind of stuff. But he uses all these pictures
- 14:32in this book to convey deeper thoughts.
- 14:36And there's also a lot of numbers that are given in the
- 14:39book, names depicting the conflict between good and evil.
- 14:43Now, symbolism in the sense of me just making it up as I go
- 14:46along, I think it means this. I think it means that I'm not
- 14:48going to do that to you. I'm going to give you some
- 14:51history from other books of the Bible that will help connect
- 14:54some of the symbolism and make it more literal.
- 14:57But you just can't arbitrarily take what's in this book and try
- 15:01to make everything literal because not everything is
- 15:03revealed yet. We're still waiting for some of
- 15:05these things to develop in the future.
- 15:08And there's an old term in seminaries and Bible college
- 15:12called hermeneutics. And hermeneutics is a study of
- 15:15how to interpret Scripture. And it says when the plain sense
- 15:18of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense.
- 15:21But take every word at its literal meaning unless studied
- 15:24in the light of related passages, something else is
- 15:27indicated otherwise. And so when we look at this,
- 15:31we're going to look at it in regards to the related passages,
- 15:35But as we think about some of the things that John was going
- 15:39to be writing about, a lot of these symbols that he's speaking
- 15:43about really relate to personal and national entities at that
- 15:48time that they were living and what would eventually develop in
- 15:52the future. Many of these leaders are
- 15:54portrayed as animals. We see the symbolism of the Lamb
- 15:57and it refers to our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Lamb who was
- 16:00slain before the foundation of the earth.
- 16:03The dragon is referred, Satan himself and the beast, the
- 16:07demonic spirits and the mutant locusts, all these things that
- 16:10we'll read in time. He also discusses cities and
- 16:13they're depicted as harlots and a bride.
- 16:16And we look at Babylon and Sodom and Egypt and Jerusalem, and in
- 16:19the context of those kind of things also at that time, as he
- 16:23looks at the symbols that he's been given, they represent
- 16:27political upheaval that will eventually occur and also terms
- 16:31of cosmic disruptions. We read in Matthew about the sun
- 16:34and moon, and also in Revelation being darkened, the stars
- 16:38falling, every island, the mountain disappearing.
- 16:41Also the number 7 is used throughout this book.
- 16:44And #7 refers to completeness and perfection in the Scriptures
- 16:49and throughout the Scripture, Deuteronomy, Psalms, and
- 16:52Proverbs, this number is used many, many times.
- 16:55In the Book of Revelation, this number is used to refer to the
- 16:58seven churches, the seven seals, the seven trumpets, the seven
- 17:02bowls, the seven thunders, and the seven beatitudes.
- 17:05There are beatitudes in the Book of Revelation and the first one
- 17:08we read the day about. Those who read this book are
- 17:11blessed. Those who hear the words of the
- 17:13prophecy are blessed, and those who keep those things which are
- 17:16written in it for the time is near.
- 17:19That's the first beatitudes of the seven in the Book of
- 17:22Revelation. There's also fractions and
- 17:24numbers given like 1/3 multiples of 12, like the 24 elders before
- 17:29the throne and 144,000 witnesses during the time of the
- 17:33tribulation, the thousand year reign. 10 days, one hour, a
- 17:38little while he uses all these times.
- 17:41As we look at this book, Revelation, it is completely
- 17:44different pretty much than any other book in the Scriptures.
- 17:48Matter of fact, there was a lot of controversy in the early
- 17:50church as to whether it should be part of the Canon.
- 17:53Now, the apostles, obviously they're the forerunners of the
- 17:57church, and what they were given is what we have today in our
- 18:00Scriptures. But there was a lot of confusion
- 18:03back then because of the inability to even begin to
- 18:06comprehend in the slightest way what this book was saying at
- 18:09that time. But it is truly inspired by God
- 18:13as a prophecy. It identifies very clearly to us
- 18:17the name of its true author. It actually predicts the future,
- 18:21and it's an epistle in the apocalyptic mode that predicts
- 18:25events of the future under the inspiration of God, the Holy
- 18:29Spirit. Now, the reign of this emperor,
- 18:34the mission, he was a very, very terrible, mean ruler.
- 18:39He wanted to persecute the whole region.
- 18:43Nero just had the ability to affect Rome at the time.
- 18:46But as the church grew, this man who was in charge, the emperor
- 18:50at the time, had the ability to deal with the whole area and try
- 18:54to destroy everybody that lived at that time.
- 18:56We study in history that Nicodemus was one of those who
- 19:00were martyred during this time of this reign of this evil
- 19:03emperor. Also Timothy.
- 19:05Timothy was out in the streets speaking against the ungodly
- 19:09role this leader and the things that were happening and the
- 19:12people came upon him and clubbed him and physically beat him in a
- 19:15couple days after his beating he he died.
- 19:18It's taught that John the Apostle was boiled in oil before
- 19:22he was sent an eggs out to this Isle of Patmos.
- 19:26And so he, as he said in verse 9, I'm your brother and
- 19:29companion in the Tribulation. He was experiencing the horror.
- 19:33And so as we look at these churches, they were all at
- 19:36different levels in their spiritual foundation as to how
- 19:41they were following Jesus Christ.
- 19:43As we study the book, you'll see there's a lot of allusion to
- 19:46other parts of the Bible, but there's not one quote from
- 19:50another book clearly defined in the Book of Revelation.
- 19:54There's imagery from hundreds of Old Testament passages though it
- 19:58gives a symbol of 2 olive trees referring to the two witnesses
- 20:01in Chapter 11 at Echo Zechariah 43. 11 through 14 referring to
- 20:08Zerubbabel and Joshua. There's hundreds of allusions to
- 20:11familiar images in the Old Testament from the book of
- 20:14Isaiah alone. 79 times alluded references Daniel 53 times
- 20:18Ezekiel 48 Psalms 43 times Exodus 27 times Jeremiah 22
- 20:24Zechariah 15 Amos 9 Joel 8. The Old Testament was the
- 20:30foundation of what the apostles taught from.
- 20:33They didn't have everything like you and I have now, so
- 20:35everything they drew upon was the Old Testament scriptures.
- 20:40It also gives us the insights of the matrix that are set up in
- 20:45the book. Like for example it gives the
- 20:48illustration of the Babylonian exile and Exodus and also
- 20:52comparing it to the life of Jesus.
- 20:54We see an evil power in the book of Exodus persecuting God's
- 20:58people, Pharaoh in Egypt, but we see an evil power persecuting
- 21:02God's people in the Book of Revelation, the Antichrist.
- 21:05We see plagues of darkness and hail and locusts and boils and
- 21:09frogs and water and turn into blood in the book of Exodus.
- 21:12We also see this revealed in the Book of Revelation.
- 21:16It talks about being delivered by the blood of the lamb in the
- 21:19Old Testament. In the book of Exodus, when the
- 21:21blood was put on the doorposts and the Angel of God spoke to
- 21:24the children of Israel saying when God sees the blood, he will
- 21:28pass over that house that the blood is applied to and they
- 21:31will not lose the life of the first born.
- 21:34But we also see in Revelation that we are delivered by the
- 21:37blood of Jesus Christ. Talks about the dragon,
- 21:40referring to the dragon in the Angel, the demonic forces of the
- 21:45devil in the Book of Revelation. Also in Ezekiel 29 three talks
- 21:49about the crossing of the Red Sea where they sang the song of
- 21:52Moses and the Redeem will sing in the Book of Revelation The
- 21:57song of Moses and the Lamb. In Revelation 15 it also
- 22:01discusses the Tabernacle and all its furnishings.
- 22:03In the book of Hebrews it discusses that the earthly
- 22:06Tabernacle is a model of the heavenly counterpart.
- 22:11A matter of fact, when you want to learn about worship, and I
- 22:15think we all have a lot more to learn about worship.
- 22:18Even though we worship the Lord here in spirit and truth and we
- 22:22lift our hearts up to God, we're only we've got a glimpse, a
- 22:25minor glimpse of what it's going to be like to worship and the
- 22:28Kingdom of heaven. But if you really want to see
- 22:29pure, divine, holy, God centered, God ordained worship,
- 22:36you read the worship in the Book of Revelation.
- 22:39John describes the atmosphere golden lampstands that are
- 22:43present in chapter 1 verse 12, hidden man associated with the
- 22:47ark of the covenant in chapter 2 verse 17, the altar of incense
- 22:51chapter 8 verse 3 through 5, the holy of holies in Chapter 11
- 22:56verse one and 15 verse 8, and the Ark of the covenant in
- 23:00Chapter 11 verse 19. We think about the birth of
- 23:04Christ and the death and the burial and the resurrection and
- 23:10his victory over Satan. A reference frequently in this
- 23:13book because it's all about Christ.
- 23:16His birth and ascension is depicted in chapter 12, verse 5.
- 23:21What's fascinating is when they talk about the two witnesses
- 23:25that will be on the earth during the time of the Tribulation,
- 23:27proclaiming the Kingdom of God and the coming of Christ.
- 23:31They mirror Christ's earthly ministry almost identically.
- 23:35Their ministry lasted 3 1/2 years.
- 23:38Christ's earthly ministry after the baptism was 3 1/2 years.
- 23:43Revelation 11 and Three speaks of these two witnesses.
- 23:46We believe they are Elijah and Enoch.
- 23:48Some people believe Elijah and Moses, but Elijah and Enoch,
- 23:52those two were the ones that never tasted physical death.

- 24:01We're going through the challenging and also intriguing
- 24:04Book of Revelation. Whether you're a fan of reading
- 24:07ahead in books of fiction, there's such a benefit to
- 24:09reading ahead in the Bible to read about how it all ends.
- 24:13But in an interesting turn of events, the Book of Revelation
- 24:17is not really the end, but rather the beginning.
- 24:22It's the end of life as we know it here on earth.
- 24:25But there's so much to look forward to for what comes after
- 24:29all the judgement of the earth and those who reject God.
- 24:32There's a lot to work through, and it can be heartbreaking to
- 24:36read through the intense judgements and wrath that will
- 24:40come on those who hate God with all their might.
- 24:43The thing is, God has given chance upon chance to these
- 24:47people. They don't want it.
- 24:49So the outcome is that there are judgments and consequences for
- 24:53those who've rejected the good news and the gift of salvation
- 24:57that's offered through Jesus's death and resurrection.
- 25:01Are you one who has heard about these things but doesn't really
- 25:05want it because you want to live life on your terms?
- 25:10Trust me, living for Jesus is so much better.
- 25:14That doesn't mean it will be easy.
