- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to on Base Live in your Bleacher Report app.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm your host, Mookie Betts, and today we have a
- 0:07Speaker 1: four time All Star, twenty nineteen NL Rookie of the Year,
- 0:12Speaker 1: and a two time Home Run Derby winner, Pete polar
- 0:15Speaker 1: Bearra Alonzo. Thanks for coming on, bro. Hell yeah, look
- 0:20Speaker 1: Florida this you know. I'm really excited to have you
- 0:27Speaker 1: on here and get to talk to you because I
- 0:28Speaker 1: got we got to play on the WBC together and
- 0:30Speaker 1: I really got to kind of see a little bit
- 0:33Speaker 1: of your personality and whatnot and so but we'll get
- 0:35Speaker 1: into that for sure in a little bit. I want
- 0:38Speaker 1: to start off a playing a game called on base,
- 0:40Speaker 1: off base. Whether you're in or out, you'll you'll get it.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So all right, warming up with a sledgehammer is the
- 0:47Speaker 1: best way to warm up, I believe you.
- 0:51Speaker 2: On base.
- 0:52Speaker 1: So I seen so it was I don't know, like
- 0:56Speaker 1: the seventh inning, I don't and I've seen the Brandon
- 1:01Speaker 1: Neimo holding this sledgehammer, And the first in my head
- 1:04Speaker 1: was what is this?
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yes?
- 1:06Speaker 1: And so why well.
- 1:09Speaker 2: So I uh so this off season, like I did
- 1:14Speaker 2: a lot of sledgehammer work.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Oh so this started from you?
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yes? Oh okay, so he just well, okay, okay, storytime, storytime.
- 1:23Speaker 2: So basically I was just doing some drills in the
- 1:25Speaker 2: off season, like, uh, do you do heavy bet heavy
- 1:29Speaker 2: bet work stuff like that. Okay, So sledgehammer it's the
- 1:33Speaker 2: same thing, but it like really emphasizes it where you
- 1:35Speaker 2: have to really be connected. You have to really kind
- 1:39Speaker 2: of be firing for certain things in your body to
- 1:42Speaker 2: grab and things move fluidly in the swing. And if
- 1:47Speaker 2: you if you swing it and things aren't connected or
- 1:50Speaker 2: you're not swinging it right, uh, then then it's gonna hurt.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So it forces your body to stay in the proper
- 1:57Speaker 2: stay in the proper like hold the proper positions while
- 2:00Speaker 2: you're while you're moving through your swing.
- 2:02Speaker 1: So and so and so.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Like the boys, I brought a sledgehammer spring training, and
- 2:08Speaker 2: like I'm hitting balls off the tee, hitting.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Front tops with with the sledge hammer, and then people
- 2:13Speaker 1: are yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I kind of like that, Like it helps you get
- 2:15Speaker 2: in that get in that position, in that body position
- 2:18Speaker 2: with your core and your legs, so you can really
- 2:21Speaker 2: increase like everything being in sync.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah, everybody uses it, or just a couple of couple
- 2:26Speaker 1: of people. Yeah, but it made the on deck back.
- 2:29Speaker 1: So that means enough people use it to make it
- 2:33Speaker 1: to the on deck made.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's made the cage bag every year and now
- 2:36Speaker 2: it got promoted to.
- 2:37Speaker 1: The deck back. Okay, so what about this The team
- 2:42Speaker 1: should play more classic rock to get hyped.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I mean I me personally, like I I like classic rock,
- 2:54Speaker 2: you know, like I'm certain some people do, but I
- 2:57Speaker 2: I would say, I'm I'm off base.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You're off base, so well, okay, so but I know
- 3:01Speaker 1: you you like classic rock for sure.
- 3:03Speaker 2: But I know, like a lot of people, like a
- 3:07Speaker 2: lot of people love like their bad bunny and stuff
- 3:09Speaker 2: like that.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you're a bad bunny guy that you look like
- 3:11Speaker 1: a bad bunny guy. I don't mind bad by Yeah,
- 3:13Speaker 1: I feel like everybody's the bagne, but you can't not.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Like Yeah, So like I feel like if I were
- 3:19Speaker 2: to turn I mean especially, a lot of guys would
- 3:22Speaker 2: hate it. I mean it's like they turn this, turn
- 3:24Speaker 2: this gringo music off. So like like they're fine with
- 3:27Speaker 2: like technos, but they would hate that.
- 3:30Speaker 1: You're right, definitely down, So we're off based on that. Yes,
- 3:36Speaker 1: what about this one? You should always use a flash,
- 3:41Speaker 1: like when you're walking in the dark. I'm gonna take
- 3:45Speaker 1: this one.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I feel like I don't want to say anything.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I feel like I'm on base. I have to be
- 3:51Speaker 1: on base now, you know, I really did. You know
- 3:55Speaker 1: how many times people like stub their toe on the
- 3:58Speaker 1: wall or on the bed or or whatever, and you
- 4:01Speaker 1: never think anything about it. You know it.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Impact, But now it impacts and like man, like.
- 4:07Speaker 1: You know, and it really sucked. It really sucked. And
- 4:11Speaker 1: you know, I just you know, I remember the seconds,
- 4:14Speaker 1: like right when you hit your toe and you know
- 4:16Speaker 1: it hasn't doesn't start hurting yet, and then the pain comes.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, you gotta.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So I knew I got it on a good one.
- 4:26Speaker 1: What what do you have any like weird injuries or
- 4:28Speaker 1: something that's nothing like that.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I'm I'm so back in college my sophomore year, we
- 4:38Speaker 2: had these like self feeding pitching machines. So before got dumble,
- 4:43Speaker 2: class went went to the field. We had a game.
- 4:46Speaker 2: This was a Tuesday game against USF. So I'm like,
- 4:48Speaker 2: all right, I'm gonna take some swings kind of early,
- 4:50Speaker 2: just kind of get my feels in, get my swings
- 4:53Speaker 2: in before before we start doing our pregame stuff. So
- 4:56Speaker 2: there was a cutball in the in the hopper and
- 4:59Speaker 2: the machine. Yeah, so you know when you feed like
- 5:01Speaker 2: a like a cut baseball into the machine and yeah,
- 5:04Speaker 2: moving all over this. Yeah, so this machine threw a
- 5:08Speaker 2: sinker from hell and this thing was gonna was gonna
- 5:12Speaker 2: hit me. So I just try and follow it off
- 5:14Speaker 2: just so to protect myself. Hits off, home plate comes up,
- 5:18Speaker 2: bashes me in the nose, and I have to wear
- 5:20Speaker 2: a softball helmet for the rest for the rest of
- 5:23Speaker 2: the year. And also I got to wear the softball
- 5:24Speaker 2: pitcher's mask and I'm like catching pop ups. I had
- 5:28Speaker 2: to take the man. Yeah. So yeah, twenty fifteen, there's
- 5:33Speaker 2: some there's some videos of me wearing a softball mask.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Like how could you see? And everything?
- 5:39Speaker 2: I raked with it, but anymore, it was like a
- 5:42Speaker 2: cone of shame, you know, like a dog when a
- 5:45Speaker 2: dog like, yes, it's not good.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Okay, what about this? The Tampa Bay Lightning will be
- 5:52Speaker 1: the next Tampa team to win a championship.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Definitely, definitely on base with that.
- 5:57Speaker 1: You're on base, big hockey guy. Yeah, I love the Bolts,
- 6:01Speaker 1: so you and from what I'm not a hockey guy,
- 6:05Speaker 1: but from what I've seen, Tampa is usually pretty good.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Is that Yes, they've been super consistent. They got they
- 6:12Speaker 2: got great, great talent. I think you go to the
- 6:15Speaker 2: games every once in a while. I do. Brandon point
- 6:19Speaker 2: and uh, Nikita Kuchirov. Obviously those that duo is is really.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Said their name, that's their names. So you you're friends
- 6:27Speaker 1: with them.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I know, I know Pointed really well. But my best
- 6:31Speaker 2: hockey buddy, I would say, is Patty Maroon. I don't
- 6:34Speaker 2: know Patty Maroon the big rig. So you did you
- 6:37Speaker 2: grow up playing hockey? I did not?
- 6:40Speaker 1: Just okay, okay, nice, okay, So uh, let's switch gears
- 6:47Speaker 1: the Mets. I've had a couple of guys on here,
- 6:50Speaker 1: and to my understanding, you got you all have nicknames
- 6:54Speaker 1: for sure. Yours is the polar Bear. The polar Bear. Yes,
- 6:58Speaker 1: for those who don't know where did this originate?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Uh, Todd Fraser. Todd Fraser, Yes, Todd Fraser, Yes. And
- 7:08Speaker 2: he's just he just he's just kind of Todd's a
- 7:13Speaker 2: guy like kind of just a loudmouth from Jersey. So
- 7:15Speaker 2: we were in twenty nineteen. This was my second big
- 7:17Speaker 2: league camp. I was between two, I would say in
- 7:22Speaker 2: my mind at the time, like two ultra veterans. Robbie
- 7:25Speaker 2: Cano was on one side, and then it was me,
- 7:27Speaker 2: and then it was Todd Fraser saw sandwich between these
- 7:30Speaker 2: two guys, and I'm just like trying to mine my
- 7:33Speaker 2: my business only speak when spoken to that. And then
- 7:37Speaker 2: Todd every day he's just go full force right at you,
- 7:42Speaker 2: and he's just just said it and then just yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Just and you you actually liked it.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a great, great nick nick could be a
- 7:50Speaker 2: ton of a ton of other other names, or you
- 7:54Speaker 2: could be a bad nickname, and that there's nothing worse
- 7:56Speaker 2: than when a bad nicknamesticks. So I'm very unfortunate. I'm
- 8:00Speaker 2: very lucky, Todd, thank you.
- 8:05Speaker 1: All right, So does Subtle have a nickname? Yet?
- 8:08Speaker 2: Everyone calls him Pacheco? Where Okay, that's his I think
- 8:12Speaker 2: that's his. Uh, it's a family name from his from
- 8:14Speaker 2: his mother's sides. But that's like he's either Juan Juanito Pachecko. Okay,
- 8:19Speaker 2: so Pa checko with a B P. Doesn't matter. You
- 8:23Speaker 2: just say it but checko, but checko, Okay, gotcha, got you?
- 8:25Speaker 1: Gotcha? And so if I say that to him, it's
- 8:28Speaker 1: it's probably over the line because I'm not on his team.
- 8:31Speaker 1: No over Well, no, it's fine. Okay, I'm gonna try
- 8:34Speaker 1: it today. We'll see, all right. So, in the spirit
- 8:38Speaker 1: of teams being really good, obviously you guys are playoff teams.
- 8:41Speaker 1: You added one Soto and now you guys have a
- 8:47Speaker 1: quote unquote big three with you Frankie Soto and really
- 8:51Speaker 1: all you guys are very your playoff baseball team, so
- 8:54Speaker 1: you know for sure, but being with those, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 1: the Met's Big three with you guys, how is that? Like,
- 9:01Speaker 1: how has that been?
- 9:02Speaker 2: Like?
- 9:02Speaker 1: Do you do you feel any pressure with that? Or
- 9:04Speaker 1: do you just like, how is it? How do you
- 9:06Speaker 1: guys play off each other?
- 9:07Speaker 2: It's awesome because like playing with these guys, it's like
- 9:11Speaker 2: the thing that I love about wand and I love
- 9:15Speaker 2: about Francisco. Those guys come ready to strap it on
- 9:18Speaker 2: every single day, and the way they post up, the
- 9:21Speaker 2: way they're consistent in their routines, they're the same cats
- 9:24Speaker 2: every single day, good, yea good or bad exactly, they're
- 9:28Speaker 2: still at the still in the cage. At the same time,
- 9:31Speaker 2: they're still in the weight room or in the training
- 9:33Speaker 2: room getting treatment, whatever they're doing. They are ridiculously committed
- 9:38Speaker 2: to their routine. They're committed to their process, and there's
- 9:42Speaker 2: a reason why like those guys like and it's not
- 9:45Speaker 2: just those guys, it's it's our team, it's our whole
- 9:47Speaker 2: it's our whole squad. And I think like from top
- 9:50Speaker 2: to bottom when you get a full group, and you
- 9:52Speaker 2: guys are kind of that way too. I from I
- 9:54Speaker 2: feel like you guys are ridiculously consistent. That's why I
- 9:56Speaker 2: feel like past two like you can just see like
- 10:00Speaker 2: like every time, every time, like good teams play, it's
- 10:03Speaker 2: just knockout, drag out because both guys or both sides
- 10:06Speaker 2: are so committed in their process and in the way they.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Can make you play good baseball. And so I know
- 10:13Speaker 1: Soto's kind of started off slow or whatever, and all
- 10:16Speaker 1: the allegations and all this stuff, and I'm not here
- 10:18Speaker 1: to talk about none of that. I just want to
- 10:20Speaker 1: put I want to hear your perspective on the guy
- 10:25Speaker 1: you saw every day, not the baseball, because the baseball
- 10:28Speaker 1: is going to be the baseball He's won Soto. Everything
- 10:31Speaker 1: is going to shake out how it's supposed to shake out,
- 10:33Speaker 1: oh for sure, But the guy every day, I would know.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I want to know about that because that that guy
- 10:39Speaker 1: is special and.
- 10:41Speaker 2: The reason why the reason why he's I mean, he's
- 10:44Speaker 2: he's a twenty six year old kid, but he's committed
- 10:47Speaker 2: to his routine. He's committed to his process. But the
- 10:49Speaker 2: end of the day, the kid eats, sleeps, and drinks ball.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Like he just is so committed to baseball, committed to
- 10:56Speaker 2: the game, committed to his craft, like like he like
- 11:00Speaker 2: one is like so dedicated to his craft, and that's
- 11:02Speaker 2: why he's like I mean, people think of him, he's like, oh,
- 11:05Speaker 2: he's like a super veteran, but really he's just a
- 11:07Speaker 2: twenty six year old that great he's been in the league.
- 11:10Speaker 2: This is his seventh, like seventh full year, eighth season,
- 11:14Speaker 2: and what he's been able to do and accomplish, it's
- 11:16Speaker 2: like it's because he's he's been so dedicated and such
- 11:21Speaker 2: routine oriented and he's owned it and that's why you
- 11:26Speaker 2: get the results on the field exactly.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And then on the other side, you start off hot,
- 11:31Speaker 1: been playing hot, been playing great, been playing normal, polar
- 11:35Speaker 1: bear baseball. What I believe that you believe you can
- 11:39Speaker 1: always do what has been different or has clicked or
- 11:45Speaker 1: whatever for you this year so far.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I feel like for me, I just want to feel
- 11:51Speaker 2: like myself pitched to pitch a bat to a bat,
- 11:53Speaker 2: and to be able to harness that and hold onto
- 11:56Speaker 2: that with like my mechanics, I don't really want to
- 12:00Speaker 2: for me, I just want to be able to no
- 12:01Speaker 2: matter what the release window is, whatever the visual whatever
- 12:07Speaker 2: the visual thing the pitcher is trying to create or
- 12:09Speaker 2: pitch shape or sequence as trying to do, it doesn't
- 12:12Speaker 2: matter if I hold on to my If I hold
- 12:13Speaker 2: on to my mechanics and I'm able to see the
- 12:17Speaker 2: ball in my go area, then it doesn't matter. Then
- 12:21Speaker 2: then I'm walked in. We're going, and I'm consistent at
- 12:24Speaker 2: back to a bat, pitch to pitch, and in game
- 12:26Speaker 2: to game, hold on to the fields, hold on to
- 12:29Speaker 2: the visuals.
- 12:30Speaker 1: And don't deviate in the Sledgehamer House.
- 12:34Speaker 2: And I mean, it's not the it's not like the
- 12:36Speaker 2: magic pill, but it's just one of this, but it
- 12:39Speaker 2: is one of the things that that does kind of
- 12:41Speaker 2: help lock in some fields for me.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Okay, So I want to go back to to baby Pete, like,
- 12:46Speaker 1: what what did you did you play other sports growing up?
- 12:49Speaker 1: What else did you do?
- 12:51Speaker 2: I played, I played football, I played lacrosse. Lacrosse. Yeah, yeah,
- 12:56Speaker 2: it was a lax bro.
- 12:57Speaker 1: That is that what it's called? Lax? Yeah, lax. Yeah,
- 13:01Speaker 1: So we got football, lacrosse.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I played basketball for a year or for two years,
- 13:07Speaker 2: wasn't that good at it? And I played soccer for
- 13:09Speaker 2: the middle school team. So yeah, so you played yeah,
- 13:13Speaker 2: super active. I mean I love, I loved playing sports.
- 13:15Speaker 1: What was which one was your favorite one?
- 13:18Speaker 2: I mean baseball?
- 13:18Speaker 1: But if I had to say baseball because he played baseball.
- 13:21Speaker 2: No, it's it really was. But my my close second
- 13:26Speaker 2: was was was football?
- 13:28Speaker 1: And you were you were good at football.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I mean I the best best I was was a
- 13:34Speaker 2: was a JV JV linebacker. That was about it.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Okay, but you loved it though I loved it.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Yeah it's great.
- 13:41Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean you're from Florida too, right, Yeah,
- 13:43Speaker 1: so that a lot of a lot of talent.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I mean I started getting recruiting letters for baseball as
- 13:50Speaker 2: a freshman, and I had no recruiting letters for being
- 13:53Speaker 2: a on JV.
- 13:54Speaker 1: You know, like so and so in high school? Like
- 14:00Speaker 1: was it was it difficult to change sports and stuff? No,
- 14:04Speaker 1: it was easy for you.
- 14:05Speaker 2: It's easy because like I just love to play. Like
- 14:07Speaker 2: for me, like I loved playing lacrosse, I love playing football,
- 14:10Speaker 2: I love playing baseball, So for me, it's like just
- 14:13Speaker 2: out there competing.
- 14:13Speaker 1: And so what did you work out?
- 14:16Speaker 2: I mean you work out.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I guess football.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Football, yeah, you have to, and then baseball you really,
- 14:25Speaker 2: I mean we're playing I think we only played like
- 14:27Speaker 2: three games, three games a week, so and then obviously
- 14:30Speaker 2: the off season, so you had time to work out.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And so then you get recruited and where did you
- 14:36Speaker 1: Where was your dream school that you wanted to go to.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Originally for the longest time, I wanted to go to
- 14:42Speaker 2: u n C.
- 14:44Speaker 1: The Guitar Hill, and you ended up going to I
- 14:47Speaker 1: ended up.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Going to so tell you how this worked out? So
- 14:51Speaker 2: I want to go to you and see and then
- 14:52Speaker 2: they're like, well we got somebody like we had our
- 14:56Speaker 2: first basement and then kind of switched over to like
- 15:00Speaker 2: some interest from Stanford. And then they're like, we actually
- 15:04Speaker 2: flew out there.
- 15:04Speaker 1: For Stanford, so that means you did like real good
- 15:06Speaker 1: in school.
- 15:07Speaker 2: I did, well, yeah, nice, So it's funny we actually
- 15:12Speaker 2: went out there for a visit, did the tour and
- 15:14Speaker 2: then just to get like just to be like, yeah,
- 15:16Speaker 2: see how the season goes.
- 15:18Speaker 1: So that was fun, okay.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And then and then I had I had two offers
- 15:26Speaker 2: on the same day after this one showcase after my
- 15:29Speaker 2: junior year, so it was Miami and Florida.
- 15:32Speaker 1: I'm like, well, oh nice, so you're gonna stay at home.
- 15:35Speaker 2: So I And for me, I was uncommitted after my
- 15:39Speaker 2: junior year baseball, so and went to I think it
- 15:43Speaker 2: was the East Coast Did you do the East Coast Pro?
- 15:45Speaker 2: So it was East Coast Pro, had a great, great showcase,
- 15:50Speaker 2: had a great game, and then Miami and Florida came
- 15:54Speaker 2: on the same day, and it's like, well, Florida, It's
- 15:56Speaker 2: like those are if you can just get on the
- 15:59Speaker 2: field at Florida and play, then you're gonna give yourself
- 16:04Speaker 2: a chance to go to the next level. So for me,
- 16:06Speaker 2: it's like best opportunity.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Miami wasn't like that.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I they I don't. I for me, like they weren't
- 16:12Speaker 2: going to the World Series Series as much. I mean
- 16:17Speaker 2: they had really good players.
- 16:19Speaker 1: But the pedigree of Florida it's crazy.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah. So for me, like I chose UF because it's like,
- 16:26Speaker 2: is it the is the easiest environment. No, it's a
- 16:30Speaker 2: challenge to get on the field. Uh, it's a challenge.
- 16:32Speaker 2: You got to earn playing time because dude, ore inner squads.
- 16:36Speaker 2: They were nice, they were Yeah, you gotta fight. You
- 16:39Speaker 2: gotta fight for playing time every every single every single
- 16:43Speaker 2: time you start that one hundred percent.
- 16:47Speaker 1: And so you go to Florida and how was it?
- 16:49Speaker 1: How was your experience?
- 16:50Speaker 2: No, it's I mean again, it is very I mean
- 16:53Speaker 2: you're there to you're there to to go to school
- 16:57Speaker 2: and and and win baseball games. That's it.
- 17:01Speaker 1: And darty every.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Once in a while when when you're allowed to. But yeah,
- 17:06Speaker 2: and definitely saturdays in the swamp were like the only
- 17:09Speaker 2: times we're allowed to darty and the swamp.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right, that's right. I mean that makes sense.
- 17:15Speaker 1: So so and did you could you have played football there?
- 17:19Speaker 1: You think?
- 17:19Speaker 2: Or no? Hell no? No?
- 17:23Speaker 1: Okay, so tell me about a football game, Like did
- 17:25Speaker 1: you go to football games?
- 17:26Speaker 2: And I know, yeah, it's sick, sick. So it depends
- 17:31Speaker 2: on what time the game starts. If it's like primetime
- 17:34Speaker 2: seven o'clock game, you got all day, all day.
- 17:36Speaker 1: To darty all day to all day and then and
- 17:39Speaker 1: then everybody's at the game that night.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Everyone rockets. And I mean seven o'clock games at the swamp.
- 17:45Speaker 2: I mean it's it's really an incredible experience.
- 17:49Speaker 1: You can fill it through the TV too.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think the twelve o'clock games, it's like
- 17:53Speaker 2: kind of just like it's kind of tough. Yeah, you
- 17:55Speaker 2: just wake up and it's just like gang yep.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that's to ear.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Okay, So then you get drafted, Uh, tell me take
- 18:03Speaker 1: me through that experience or process or whatever as you're
- 18:05Speaker 1: going through the draft and whatnot.
- 18:08Speaker 2: I mean, honestly, my junior year, I was just like
- 18:11Speaker 2: I gotta I was just on a mission to not
- 18:16Speaker 2: I mean draft, getting drafted was important, but the previous
- 18:19Speaker 2: year we were I think we so University of Virginia
- 18:23Speaker 2: knocked us out in the semifinals at the College World Series.
- 18:28Speaker 2: And once you get a taste of like that playoff baseball,
- 18:31Speaker 2: then like you get it, you get addicted to it.
- 18:34Speaker 2: And for us it's like we were I mean, we
- 18:38Speaker 2: had six guys drafted on the first day, but it's
- 18:40Speaker 2: like we had the talent we were supposed to win.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Then my junior we end up not winning. We ended
- 18:45Speaker 2: up going getting to the World Series, but then going
- 18:48Speaker 2: two games in a queue and sat on our way home,
- 18:52Speaker 2: which was disappointing. But the whole year, it's like, we
- 18:54Speaker 2: got to get back, we got to finish what we
- 18:56Speaker 2: what we started. Because to be able to hoist up
- 18:58Speaker 2: that trophy and play for a championship, I mean that
- 19:01Speaker 2: was really important. And then obviously along the way you
- 19:04Speaker 2: have success, and then the draft stuff took care of
- 19:07Speaker 2: took care of itself.
- 19:08Speaker 1: How was your minor league experience with the fun or
- 19:10Speaker 1: was it like a grind?
- 19:11Speaker 2: It was? I mean it was great. I mean, I
- 19:15Speaker 2: for me, I'm very blessed that I was able to perform.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I think I spent two and a half seasons, only
- 19:23Speaker 2: two and a half seasons did the fall league. I
- 19:27Speaker 2: had the luxury of being a college guy, so they
- 19:29Speaker 2: were like, okay, have success, we'll move you along a
- 19:31Speaker 2: little bit, which was nice.
- 19:35Speaker 1: So who who who did you play when college? Like,
- 19:37Speaker 1: were there any any guys in the that you played?
- 19:41Speaker 2: Dane Dunning he's with Texas, Harrison Bader, y'all are.
- 19:46Speaker 1: On the same team, Oh yeah, nice a J Puck.
- 19:50Speaker 2: And then we had a guy named Buddy Reed went
- 19:53Speaker 2: in the second round. Buddy Yeah, logan short first day guy.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Ah, y'all playing on the same team of yeah, kind of.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Uh and then I in junior year, Brady Singer, John Johnny, India,
- 20:09Speaker 2: Alex Fayato.
- 20:10Speaker 1: So when you go when you go see these guys
- 20:12Speaker 1: on the road, do y'all go to eat lunch or
- 20:14Speaker 1: anything together?
- 20:16Speaker 2: Not a whole lot, because I mean guys like for me,
- 20:19Speaker 2: like families, wives and stuff like that. So it's like
- 20:22Speaker 2: families first, but we always always see each other kind of.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Do y'all have like a little sign or something that
- 20:29Speaker 1: y'all did that you know, you know, you know, like
- 20:32Speaker 1: you know how Gator Trump?
- 20:35Speaker 2: No, No, nothing like that.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Okay, I'll figure it out.
- 20:40Speaker 2: It's a but a lot of guys that go through there. Oh,
- 20:42Speaker 2: shout out Jack Cocking Florida Gatoray.
- 20:46Speaker 1: So so you claim him because he went to Florida too.
- 20:49Speaker 2: And he went to and we went to the same
- 20:51Speaker 2: high school.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Oh so, y'all, y'all really are cool, which I ain't
- 20:55Speaker 1: met yet. No, we've this is you already know them.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Oh so y'all are real cool y'all at homeboys? Yes,
- 21:01Speaker 1: good for you, Good for you. So well, I've heard
- 21:04Speaker 1: he's really good. Obviously he well he's the number one
- 21:07Speaker 1: prospect right Yeah, so I'm sure he's got a lot
- 21:10Speaker 1: of pressure on him, but he's so talented.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I mean, he'll be fine.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Yeah, he'll be fine. He'll be fine. Plus he's got
- 21:16Speaker 1: you as a friend. So yes, So as you come
- 21:20Speaker 1: up with in the meds and now you've been are
- 21:25Speaker 1: you are you one of the longest you got to
- 21:27Speaker 1: be one of the longest tenured guys out there.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah. So there's three guys. So it's Nim's, Brandon Nemo,
- 21:34Speaker 2: Jeff McNeil. He's he lets me know every day that
- 21:37Speaker 2: he has two months more of big league service time.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Okay, he lets.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Me know every day. And and me, so me and Jeff,
- 21:47Speaker 2: Jeff has over seven years. This is my seventh year NIMS.
- 21:50Speaker 2: I think this is your I mean, he's he got
- 21:56Speaker 2: called up in sixteen.
- 21:57Speaker 1: He got to be a ten.
- 21:58Speaker 2: He's close to close to ten. Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Yeah, So and and I want to I want to
- 22:04Speaker 1: go through last year's playoffs and really through the end
- 22:08Speaker 1: of the season, because you guys really got started playing
- 22:11Speaker 1: well and you get into the playoffs and like there's
- 22:14Speaker 1: no real adversity, didn't really matter because y'all just kept playing.
- 22:18Speaker 2: We were playing for our lives from like first on.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And oh, so that's so you just got used to it.
- 22:24Speaker 1: So oh okay, all right, So do you think that.
- 22:28Speaker 2: That is yeah, we'refore Yeah, our team was forged by
- 22:32Speaker 2: adversity and because I mean we came from eleven games
- 22:36Speaker 2: under five hundred, eleven games back in the division or
- 22:39Speaker 2: from a wild coach eleven games under five hundred, and
- 22:41Speaker 2: like we were too talented and and we had all
- 22:45Speaker 2: the pieces, and it's like, we need to go and
- 22:49Speaker 2: for us to be able to accomplish something, we need
- 22:51Speaker 2: to go. And thankfully we were able to make it
- 22:53Speaker 2: happen day by day.
- 22:54Speaker 1: What do you think changed or I'm don't know, Yeah, yeah,
- 23:01Speaker 1: would think changed for you guys?
- 23:03Speaker 2: I think uh, I mean obviously being eleven games under
- 23:08Speaker 2: you have and and with the talent you look at
- 23:10Speaker 2: around at each other and it's like, man, we need
- 23:12Speaker 2: to be better.
- 23:13Speaker 1: That what that's not that that's not really like a
- 23:15Speaker 1: talk though, Like is that just understand.
- 23:17Speaker 2: There's a uh so it actually happened. Uh you remember
- 23:22Speaker 2: you were actually there? Remember the glove toss? Mmm? Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 23:29Speaker 2: glove toss in the stands? Yeah, what was going here?
- 23:34Speaker 2: Let me let's flip here, flip the script, flip here,
- 23:37Speaker 2: give me the pillow. So what was going through your mind.
- 23:40Speaker 1: When you saw so when he walked off, he walked off,
- 23:47Speaker 1: and we saw a dude throw his gloves in the
- 23:54Speaker 1: stands untucked to jersey, tucked to jersey, first throw the
- 23:58Speaker 1: glove in the stands the walk off. I was like,
- 24:02Speaker 1: you know what, there's no way they can beat us,
- 24:06Speaker 1: There's there's a look at this, there's no way, look
- 24:10Speaker 1: at this. This is this is the wildest thing I've
- 24:13Speaker 1: ever seen. And I love it. I love I loved it.
- 24:18Speaker 1: I loved it because he did not He did not
- 24:20Speaker 1: give a damn and you hardly ever like for a person,
- 24:25Speaker 1: for a guy to get to that mental head space.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Did you in the stands, bro.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Did you have to put your job back of your life?
- 24:32Speaker 1: Yes, we all did because it was like it was
- 24:36Speaker 1: like a slow motion uh just movie. Just this is unbelievable.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Never seen it and never seen never seen in the show.
- 24:45Speaker 1: And that was probably one of the best things for
- 24:47Speaker 1: you guys.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we had a it was kind of like a
- 24:51Speaker 2: after after that game. It was like a very it
- 24:53Speaker 2: was like a team. I wasn't there because Paxson drilled
- 24:56Speaker 2: me with the heater in the hand. I was I
- 24:59Speaker 2: was in the MRIM and but everyone else, all the
- 25:01Speaker 2: other boys were where they're having to come to Jesus moment.
- 25:05Speaker 1: That's what I mean. That's because that was the only
- 25:07Speaker 1: option you had after that, for sure, you know what
- 25:09Speaker 1: I'm saying, Like that was one or two ways. Yes,
- 25:13Speaker 1: and I will never forget that. And yeah, I mean,
- 25:19Speaker 1: I mean he's you know, obviously shout out, shout out
- 25:21Speaker 1: to him for firing you guys up and you know,
- 25:24Speaker 1: and doing what it would needed to be done. But whatever.
- 25:27Speaker 1: So I want to talk a little more about you
- 25:31Speaker 1: and and something that's personal to you, and that's home runs.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Love it.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Do you know how many home career home runs you have?
- 25:41Speaker 2: Uh? Two thirty something?
- 25:43Speaker 1: And how many do you want to hit? Like I'm
- 25:46Speaker 1: at like a goal that you said, you know.
- 25:48Speaker 2: I don't know, Like I just want to for me,
- 25:51Speaker 2: I want to play. I want to play through my
- 25:55Speaker 2: age forty season.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Okay, so age forty season. If you hit forty a year,
- 26:00Speaker 1: I think forty a years is real for you. I
- 26:04Speaker 1: don't even know how many what the math is on that.
- 26:07Speaker 2: I mean, ideally like it'd be great to play and
- 26:10Speaker 2: then whatever it ends up being, it ends.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Up being because like you don't worry about it, Okay, yeah, because.
- 26:14Speaker 2: For me, like you got to capitalize on a pitch
- 26:18Speaker 2: over the middle of the dish, Yeah that's it.
- 26:19Speaker 1: But don't you want you don't want to be a
- 26:21Speaker 1: homer though? I mean, I mean, yeah, you you love
- 26:24Speaker 1: home run, so I want to I want to know
- 26:26Speaker 1: more about it because then I mean I love homers,
- 26:30Speaker 1: Yeah I do, But like, like I not enough to
- 26:33Speaker 1: do the home run Derby and win it twice, you
- 26:36Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. Like, and you're going to keep
- 26:38Speaker 1: doing the home run derby too? Maybe would you? Would you?
- 26:41Speaker 1: Just that's your your event though, right? You love it?
- 26:44Speaker 2: I yeah, it's because like as a kid, it's like
- 26:46Speaker 2: one of the things that it was. It's always I
- 26:49Speaker 2: always wanted to do it, and it's like and for me,
- 26:52Speaker 2: I think like doing that it's like every once in
- 26:55Speaker 2: a while you have those like moments as a ballplayer.
- 26:57Speaker 2: For me, it's like eight year old eight year old
- 27:00Speaker 2: me would have been really really really proud and really
- 27:03Speaker 2: stoked to do this, you know what I'm saying.
- 27:05Speaker 1: And so tell me about that, Tell me about the
- 27:07Speaker 1: home run Derby and what and why you feel like
- 27:10Speaker 1: you're so good at it.
- 27:12Speaker 2: I for me, I think it's as much as it
- 27:15Speaker 2: is a like Homer thing, it's it's also like an
- 27:19Speaker 2: endurance and it's an endurance competition because you gotta you gotta,
- 27:22Speaker 2: you gotta outlast three rounds of pretty much swinging is
- 27:26Speaker 2: like taking taking really hard swings.
- 27:30Speaker 1: And you feel like you do that better than everybody.
- 27:33Speaker 2: I don't know because I I mean again, like if
- 27:36Speaker 2: I if I was like five for five, then.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you're sometimes, but I mean you just
- 27:40Speaker 1: feel like you know because I remember you. I remember
- 27:42Speaker 1: a while ago you said you were the best home
- 27:44Speaker 1: run hitter I in MVP and not MBP.
- 27:47Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Well, I know I believe, like yeah, like
- 27:50Speaker 2: I I think for me, I just want to be consistent.
- 27:53Speaker 2: I think for me, like in that in that event,
- 27:56Speaker 2: like I feel like I I truly it's one of
- 27:59Speaker 2: those things where I don't know.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I just you have the advantage you do. I can
- 28:05Speaker 1: always pick you.
- 28:06Speaker 2: I appreciate that.
- 28:07Speaker 1: I always feel like, you know, what, if Pete just starts,
- 28:12Speaker 1: it's always over.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just one it's like one click, one rhythm,
- 28:15Speaker 2: and then once it starts.
- 28:17Speaker 1: It doesn't stop, right, you know so, and I did it.
- 28:20Speaker 1: I did the home run every one time. And it
- 28:24Speaker 1: makes perfect sense what you mean by the endurance. And
- 28:26Speaker 1: you got to really be able to just barely swing.
- 28:29Speaker 1: And you guys use a heavy bat too.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Right, it's thirty four to thirty two.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I mean that's not that bad.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I've seen some guys they use like thirty threes
- 28:36Speaker 1: and thirty fours, yeah, to help to get over. And
- 28:40Speaker 1: there's no way I can do that, No way. So
- 28:44Speaker 1: I want to switch a little bit to your personal life.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Bro.
- 28:47Speaker 1: You you and your wife. Uh, you guys are expecting, yes, right,
- 28:54Speaker 1: and congratulations, thank you. So when does she do?
- 28:58Speaker 2: Uh, she's due, she's due later on. Yeah, there you go.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Uh she's due. She's gonna be due later on. She's
- 29:08Speaker 2: in week twenty twenty three right now. So you don't
- 29:12Speaker 2: know what she's doing. No I do.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I just oh, you don't want to say it? Yeah, okay,
- 29:16Speaker 1: all right, So she's due later on.
- 29:17Speaker 2: It's it's just gonna be it's gonna be kind of
- 29:19Speaker 2: a tough. We don't well, we're gonna have to trip. No,
- 29:23Speaker 2: we're gonna have So I'll put it this way. We're
- 29:25Speaker 2: gonna have to thread a needle. That's that's okay.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I mean, you know what, there's only one way to
- 29:30Speaker 1: do it. You just gotta do it, you know what
- 29:31Speaker 1: I'm saying. Gotta do what you gotta do.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 29:32Speaker 1: So, and it's a little boy. Yes, so are you
- 29:35Speaker 1: do you do you want a girl eventually? Eventually? Yes?
- 29:39Speaker 1: But you you wanted a boy first.
- 29:41Speaker 2: I mean, whether it's first or whatever, Like.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I wanted my I have to and I wanted my
- 29:46Speaker 1: boy first because I wanted him to protect his little
- 29:49Speaker 1: his little sister. Because I did want a girl and
- 29:51Speaker 1: got him back. Well, I feel like that's what it
- 29:54Speaker 1: is though. Well, I feel like the it's for you.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I feel like your your daughter. She's gonna run. Yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Yeah, and so it'll be fine.
- 30:03Speaker 1: I mean, it works for him, it's gonna be awesome
- 30:07Speaker 1: when seeing their relationship is a wonderful thing.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Really, when they get older, that's when that's when that's
- 30:13Speaker 2: when the yeah, yeah he's not Yeah, you're younger, you're
- 30:16Speaker 2: not baby brother, you're younger brother.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Yea, it'll be cool. Yeah you and it's dope having
- 30:22Speaker 1: a son. And I'm really excited for you because you're
- 30:25Speaker 1: gonna have a little boy. You're this dude. This little
- 30:27Speaker 1: dude is gonna watch every move you make.
- 30:30Speaker 2: I'm excited. I'm excited, but I for me, I just
- 30:34Speaker 2: can't wait to see, like what his personality is going
- 30:38Speaker 2: to be, like, see his personality, kind of see him
- 30:41Speaker 2: like I want to see how he is like as
- 30:44Speaker 2: an independent, seemed to start to think for himself. Like
- 30:47Speaker 2: I'm really excited for that, to see what what he becomes,
- 30:51Speaker 2: you know, like how he how he becomes, and you know.
- 30:54Speaker 1: What's crazy is like you're really responsible for that. So
- 31:00Speaker 1: it makes it tough. It's there, it is what it is.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Good luck. You know, I canna get any sleep. So
- 31:07Speaker 1: my advice to you is just like I almost don't
- 31:10Speaker 1: even try. Like when you wake up and he wakes up,
- 31:15Speaker 1: just get up dog because you're not going to go
- 31:17Speaker 1: back to sleep.
- 31:17Speaker 2: I appreciate you.
- 31:18Speaker 1: So the harder you fight it, the worse it gets.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Such is a ride with whatever whatever happens. So I
- 31:26Speaker 1: want to go to this off season. You signed a
- 31:30Speaker 1: two year to stay with New York with the Mets.
- 31:35Speaker 1: What is it about being a met that you just
- 31:36Speaker 1: love and you've been through You've been through some dark
- 31:41Speaker 1: times with the Mets and now obviously the SO side
- 31:47Speaker 1: going through.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Free agency, this was the this was the thing. So
- 31:51Speaker 2: I wanted to go be an environment where it was
- 31:55Speaker 2: we are we are going for it. We are trying
- 31:57Speaker 2: to win baseball games. We are competing, and we're trying
- 32:00Speaker 2: to hold up the trophy at the end of the
- 32:01Speaker 2: end of the year. Check you check that box? Uh
- 32:05Speaker 2: for me? Am I gonna get obviously at bats and
- 32:09Speaker 2: stuff like that, like check out. And then at that
- 32:12Speaker 2: point when I when I signed, like, okay, like are
- 32:16Speaker 2: we trying to win? Yes, but you have like what
- 32:19Speaker 2: about the personnel? How am I gonna fit with the personnel?
- 32:22Speaker 2: Am I gonna like? Are we going to have like dudes?
- 32:26Speaker 2: Right cause you can't just be one man band like
- 32:30Speaker 2: trying to trying to take on trying to take on
- 32:32Speaker 2: the league. Can't do that. It's not it's not sustainable
- 32:36Speaker 2: that way. So obviously we sign we signed Soto early
- 32:41Speaker 2: in the off season, and then you go through a
- 32:44Speaker 2: couple of other signings. You sign Clay Holmes, aj mentor
- 32:49Speaker 2: Sean and Iya and it's like, Okay, we got a
- 32:52Speaker 2: couple guys that were a part of that group that
- 32:55Speaker 2: are coming Ryan Stanick some some good some good arms,
- 32:58Speaker 2: electric arms. So I'm like, okay, this is this is legit.
- 33:04Speaker 2: So and then we get obviously Frankie Montas, Okay, another
- 33:09Speaker 2: good arm. So we needed because I feel like against
- 33:12Speaker 2: y'all in the playoffs, it's like we we shot every
- 33:14Speaker 2: bullet we had. Yeah, yeah, we shot every we we
- 33:17Speaker 2: emptied the clip. You guys, you guys.
- 33:20Speaker 1: We were good. Man, we were good.
- 33:22Speaker 2: But you guys had you guys weathered the storm. But
- 33:24Speaker 2: like for us, it's like, Okay, looking back on it,
- 33:27Speaker 2: it's like if we would have had some of these pieces,
- 33:29Speaker 2: I feel like we would have been better set.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Up easily because it's a different team. Like the guys
- 33:34Speaker 1: that you that's just a different team.
- 33:36Speaker 2: So check check check check and have the We have
- 33:41Speaker 2: the familiarity, which is great because they know me, I
- 33:44Speaker 2: know them, I know what I'm going to get. It's
- 33:46Speaker 2: not a different environment and and for me, like it's
- 33:53Speaker 2: playing for I mean, that organization is really special because
- 33:56Speaker 2: they've believed in me when I was a twenty year
- 33:58Speaker 2: old year old kid uh to get drafted. They believed
- 34:01Speaker 2: in me when I was a twenty four year old
- 34:03Speaker 2: kid like making a roster out of opening day. It's like, hey,
- 34:06Speaker 2: like they they kept me. They obviously, like they kept
- 34:10Speaker 2: believing me, and he didn't move me, they didn't trade
- 34:12Speaker 2: me or whatever. And then it's like, okay, we'll come
- 34:14Speaker 2: back in free agency. So we we appreciate that. But
- 34:18Speaker 2: all those boxes, like it's okay, I love playing for
- 34:23Speaker 2: the Mets, but like when you get to free agency,
- 34:25Speaker 2: you have to have a kind of a checklist. You
- 34:28Speaker 2: can't just go into it necessarily blindly. And for me,
- 34:32Speaker 2: I was very fortunate, very educated, and for me, I
- 34:35Speaker 2: was very convicted, and I know what my direction and
- 34:39Speaker 2: where I want to go in my crow. I want
- 34:40Speaker 2: to hold the trophy. I know you were able to
- 34:42Speaker 2: you were to do it what twice with with uh
- 34:45Speaker 2: with obviously La and then and then Boston. So that's
- 34:50Speaker 2: three it's three rings for you.
- 34:51Speaker 1: I know, it's it's it's pretty neat, pretty neat, but
- 34:55Speaker 1: I mean, you you to your point, like all those boxes,
- 34:59Speaker 1: it just takes boxes. And then sometimes throughout those years, bro,
- 35:03Speaker 1: it's just destiny, like you'll you'll see, Yeah, you know,
- 35:09Speaker 1: it's hard to explain. I can't explain that just right.
- 35:12Speaker 1: It just happens, and you'll see it. You'll see it
- 35:15Speaker 1: when it when it happens. But but it starts with
- 35:19Speaker 1: the checklist that you just talked about. Those guys, you know,
- 35:22Speaker 1: and so you guys are playing great man and you
- 35:25Speaker 1: know you're gonna be You're gonna be real. You guys
- 35:28Speaker 1: are going to be really good. I do got a
- 35:29Speaker 1: question your your folks, your grandpa he he went to Nyu.
- 35:36Speaker 2: He did. Yeah, so so growing up so he was
- 35:40Speaker 2: he grew up in Spain. Uh So during like the
- 35:46Speaker 2: weird times of like the Spanish regime. So the Nazis
- 35:48Speaker 2: like came into Spain. So great Grandpa got them out,
- 35:51Speaker 2: moved in New York and so then he became of age.
- 35:57Speaker 2: He enlisted in the US Army and fought World War Two.
- 36:01Speaker 2: He was in North Africa, did a campaign in Italy,
- 36:07Speaker 2: and we found all this out. He never talked about it,
- 36:09Speaker 2: but after he passed, we found his his medals.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Oh wow, okay, okay, okay, I bet that's super dope.
- 36:16Speaker 2: It's crazy. And then he went to n Yu used
- 36:18Speaker 2: the g I Bill went to n y U.
- 36:20Speaker 1: And your dad is and then was your dad.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Your dad was born and my dad was born and
- 36:26Speaker 2: my dad was born in Queens.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Where it was Queen's closer to you guys, or or
- 36:32Speaker 1: I don't know anything about anything.
- 36:33Speaker 2: We're so technically City Field is in Queens.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Dad he was born right there.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Yeah, so he got to leave the but growing growing
- 36:44Speaker 2: up like in New York, like working there, it's like, uh,
- 36:47Speaker 2: he he had vivid memories of being in Brooklyn, like
- 36:50Speaker 2: I think, and listening to uh, listening to games like
- 36:54Speaker 2: the Dodgy games on the radio. So he he was
- 36:59Speaker 2: he was a Dodgy. He was a Dodger. He was
- 37:00Speaker 2: a Dodger. Guy, was a Dodger guy.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Was it that he was a Dodger guy? Okay, got
- 37:04Speaker 1: you got you? Got you? So so like playing for
- 37:09Speaker 1: New York does that does that mean anything?
- 37:11Speaker 2: No? One that it's that gravitational poll or that destiny,
- 37:16Speaker 2: that kind of that that you're talking about. Where it's
- 37:19Speaker 2: like my so on my on my dad's side, that's
- 37:23Speaker 2: where my that's where my family, that's where my family was.
- 37:26Speaker 2: My dad was born there, like they eventually moved out,
- 37:28Speaker 2: they moved to Ohio, but my dad was born there
- 37:33Speaker 2: and all my dad's sisters were were born there. I
- 37:37Speaker 2: met my grandma there, so she was actually a receptionist.
- 37:42Speaker 2: I don't know how to type. I need a type papers.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Oh okay, that's good, okay, And I want to talk
- 37:49Speaker 1: that that's really that's really neat. That's really really neat.
- 37:53Speaker 1: But I do want to talk about like your secret
- 37:56Speaker 1: sauce and like secret sauce seeing and I remember you
- 38:01Speaker 1: said it was chocolate milk, chocolate milk and squats, squats.
- 38:04Speaker 1: What why is it chocolate milk and squats, Like why
- 38:07Speaker 1: that's not even like really that much of a secret.
- 38:09Speaker 2: No, it's I mean for me, I think I get
- 38:13Speaker 2: a lot of my powers, like derived from my my legs,
- 38:16Speaker 2: my lower half, my balance, so and squats. You need
- 38:20Speaker 2: to use your obviously, use your legs, use your core.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, there it is.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Dude, that that that the beard is throwing me off.
- 38:32Speaker 2: That's so that was. That was Wow, that.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Was like young and sexy peak. That was you was
- 38:38Speaker 1: trying to be cute with the beard.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Okay, well that's uh yeah, that was that was yeah
- 38:46Speaker 2: twenty nineteen.
- 38:46Speaker 1: That's back when beards were like in you know, beards
- 38:50Speaker 1: were the thing in baseball at one point.
- 38:53Speaker 2: I mean they still kind of they still they still are,
- 38:55Speaker 2: but like, but now I feel like the facial it's
- 38:57Speaker 2: like everyone's got a mustache.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, that's just kind of a game. Or they
- 39:01Speaker 1: let this just go crazy like Mountain Man. Yeah, you
- 39:05Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, which is cool, I get it.
- 39:06Speaker 2: You know, Base always the believers with like the big
- 39:09Speaker 2: Mountain Man. It's always.
- 39:12Speaker 1: I don't know why. I'm not sure why. So do
- 39:15Speaker 1: you participate in no shape November?
- 39:18Speaker 2: No?
- 39:19Speaker 1: Yeah, me neither. No if I let mine go. So
- 39:22Speaker 1: I do want to ask a couple. I gotta I
- 39:24Speaker 1: gotta get a little game to play. It's called Secret Sauce.
- 39:28Speaker 1: And uh, you're not going to get any of these right, Okay,
- 39:32Speaker 1: but I want to play, Okay, and you just got
- 39:37Speaker 1: to tell me the athlete who you think it is.
- 39:41Speaker 1: It could be any This is why it could be
- 39:43Speaker 1: any sport. The the the search results start, okay, Okay.
- 39:51Speaker 1: So this athlete throws up before every game, every NFL game,
- 39:58Speaker 1: so you know it's the NFL. He throws up before
- 40:00Speaker 1: every NFL game. We're just giving people the Secret Sauce.
- 40:07Speaker 1: We're bringing it. Yeah, there's no way you're going to
- 40:09Speaker 1: get this right. He throws up before every game.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Can I ask offense or defense?
- 40:19Speaker 1: Offense?
- 40:19Speaker 2: Offense? I feel like this is like either a running
- 40:28Speaker 2: back or a wide receiver. I feel like it's not
- 40:29Speaker 2: a quarterback.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So do you want to guess?
- 40:33Speaker 2: No, I don't want to tell.
- 40:34Speaker 1: All right, So Josh Allen, Josh Allen throws up before everything.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Doesn't that hurt?
- 40:43Speaker 2: Like? That?
- 40:43Speaker 1: Can't feel good? I mean, Josh, I'm questioning you a
- 40:47Speaker 1: little bit throwing up before games. Now, I know you
- 40:49Speaker 1: cod and you what do? What do? What you gotta do?
- 40:54Speaker 2: But man, oh good? Okay, all right.
- 40:58Speaker 1: So the next one, this athlete, I would say, didn't
- 41:07Speaker 1: didn't wash their socks throughout then throughout entire tennis tournaments.
- 41:13Speaker 1: So you know it's a tennis player. This athlete did
- 41:15Speaker 1: not wash their socks throughout entire tennis tournaments. I don't
- 41:20Speaker 1: know how true this is. I don't want to spread rumors.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Is the old school or newer?
- 41:27Speaker 1: She?
- 41:28Speaker 2: She? She is?
- 41:31Speaker 1: No nice try though. I mean, I'm just glad that
- 41:34Speaker 1: she tried. No Serena, Serena, Serena Serena. You know, like again,
- 41:39Speaker 1: this is all allegations, same socks, same socks. I mean,
- 41:43Speaker 1: I get it because baseball, we wear a lot of
- 41:45Speaker 1: the same clothes, but we wash it. You know what
- 41:49Speaker 1: I'm saying, Like tennis doesn't have clubbies, they may not
- 41:52Speaker 1: have plubbies. That's that's probably one of the is. She
- 41:55Speaker 1: probably is like you know what in her locker. You know,
- 41:58Speaker 1: nobody's gonna wash it. So I'm just gonna hang it
- 41:59Speaker 1: out up. It'll be dry by tomorrow and it'll be fine.
- 42:04Speaker 1: And these are my lucky size. Everybody has their lucky
- 42:07Speaker 1: socks or their lucky drawers or whatever that I've been
- 42:09Speaker 1: playing well and I'm not gonna change draws. I don't
- 42:11Speaker 1: care how many holes that are in these draws.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Well, and then until like I obviously like for me,
- 42:16Speaker 2: it's like I got lucky ones and then I get
- 42:18Speaker 2: scraped up on my knees.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Oh so then so if do you keep wearing them,
- 42:22Speaker 1: wearing them until the luck runs out or what?
- 42:24Speaker 2: Hell? Yeah?
- 42:25Speaker 1: Oh yes, a year. Yeah.
- 42:26Speaker 2: I think that's that's universal.
- 42:29Speaker 1: I think that's all sports is a thing. Like we
- 42:32Speaker 1: all are a little We're not super We're just stitious. Okay,
- 42:38Speaker 1: so this athlete wore his college shorts under his uniform
- 42:46Speaker 1: for every NBA game. No, you're not gonna get this
- 42:52Speaker 1: one either. Actually you may. You may just look up
- 42:55Speaker 1: and get this one NBA game out of shorts.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Kevin Garnett.
- 43:04Speaker 1: No, I thought you just look at Michael Jordan's Michael. Yeah.
- 43:07Speaker 1: I actually have heard this before, but I didn't believe it.
- 43:10Speaker 1: But now that it's on it made it to the iPad.
- 43:13Speaker 1: It's true. Oh, it's true. Okay, we'll finished the last one.
- 43:18Speaker 1: This athlete he ate chicken before every game.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Randy Johnson.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Wade Box. That's that. That's the same. Did you look
- 43:29Speaker 1: over here and see I can't? I mean that that
- 43:32Speaker 1: was a great, great guess.
- 43:34Speaker 2: So, oh, dug, I should know this. Wade Box played
- 43:39Speaker 2: high school.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Wade Box.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Chicken Man. I'm, I'm, I'm.
- 43:42Speaker 1: That was his nickname.
- 43:43Speaker 2: That's his Twitter thing, his chicken Man. Chicken Man. Yeah.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Okay, so his secret sauce is chicken. So does the
- 43:52Speaker 1: back to I want to go back to your secret
- 43:54Speaker 1: secret sauce? Do you have a certain amount of squats?
- 43:58Speaker 2: No? I mean, honestly, it's just you just do it
- 44:01Speaker 2: to feel good. Do it to feel good where you
- 44:03Speaker 2: feel powerful but not fatigued.
- 44:05Speaker 1: Okay, all right, and chocolate milk. Okay, if you lack toast,
- 44:08Speaker 1: then what I don't know. Then you're just screwed. You
- 44:12Speaker 1: just not can get it. Look at you in there.
- 44:14Speaker 1: So uh pete, Uh, you know, obviously we got a
- 44:17Speaker 1: game today, so I'm I'm let you ride, man, but
- 44:20Speaker 1: thanks for coming on.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Hey. I hope you go. I hope you go four
- 44:23Speaker 2: for four, four singles and then no RB I.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Oh wow, thank you. No steaks though, that kind of sucks,
- 44:29Speaker 1: but we're trying to win.
- 44:31Speaker 2: I hope you do.
- 44:31Speaker 1: You gotta win. You know what, I hope don't. You
- 44:36Speaker 1: don't hit singles. That's the problem. You hit four singles.
- 44:39Speaker 1: There's no way you're hitting four singles.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Why not?
- 44:41Speaker 1: Because I watched the line drive that went by me
- 44:43Speaker 1: yesterday and I saw how hard that was.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Yeah it was, dude. It's only ninety nine, I promise
- 44:52Speaker 2: when you said, when you said something about it, you're like, oh,
- 44:56Speaker 2: it's like you hit that really hard on you did. No,
- 44:58Speaker 2: it's only ninety nine.
- 44:59Speaker 1: It was only ninety nine, but you your your ass
- 45:03Speaker 1: was out ninety nine.
- 45:06Speaker 2: You could reach for it.
- 45:07Speaker 1: I did reach for it exactly ninety nine exactly. So uh,
- 45:10Speaker 1: you know what, I hope the same. I'll let you
- 45:13Speaker 1: hit a double, though, but you can't get the steak
- 45:15Speaker 1: on the double.
- 45:16Speaker 2: That stinks. Okay, you just want one double, I give you.
- 45:20Speaker 1: No, that's one double that counts as two knocks, So
- 45:23Speaker 1: a double. See that's the thing. You don't hit singles,
- 45:27Speaker 1: But you know what, I hope you hit an ass
- 45:29Speaker 1: out single over the second.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Basement, soggy, broken by, and.
- 45:33Speaker 1: You know what, just for the sake of it, I'll
- 45:34Speaker 1: give you one steak. I can't give you four hits though,
- 45:38Speaker 1: because I don't believe that four hits are going to
- 45:40Speaker 1: stay in the yard. Not all four, but a double
- 45:44Speaker 1: and a single and this single is going to be
- 45:48Speaker 1: the steak. Just that's it. That's all I can give
- 45:50Speaker 1: you three.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Okay, it's fine.
- 45:53Speaker 1: That's all I can give you.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Gentlemen's agreement.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Okay, thank you, bro. But anyways, yeah, thanks for coming
- 45:59Speaker 1: on the show Man again and I'm glad I got
- 46:01Speaker 1: to know you a little bit. And uh the I
- 46:05Speaker 1: love the passion and all the energy you bring to
- 46:07Speaker 1: the game. It's infectious and so the Mets are the
- 46:10Speaker 1: Mets are lucky to have you. And uh again, I'll
- 46:13Speaker 1: see you later on bro. Yeah see seven, seven ten,
- 46:17Speaker 1: all right, guys, thanks for watching the show and we'll
- 46:20Speaker 1: catch you next time.
