Latest / How To Protect The Ocean / US Opens Up Marine Protected Areas to Fishing: What This Means for Ocean Conservation
Transcript
- 0:01It seems as though every time I go away
- 0:03on vacation, there's some breaking news.
- 0:06And today on the breaking news is from
- 0:08the US that the US
- 0:09President Donald Trump wants
- 0:11to roll back fishery regulations in the
- 0:14Pacific remote islands of
- 0:16the National Monument so
- 0:17that they can be a bigger player in
- 0:21fisheries around the world.
- 0:23We're going to talk about why that's
- 0:24significant, why we're not
- 0:26surprised to hear this on this
- 0:28episode of the How to
- 0:29Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 0:31Let's start the show.
- 0:35Hey everybody, welcome back to another
- 0:36exciting episode of the How
- 0:37to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 0:38I'm your host, Andrew Lewin, and this is
- 0:40the podcast where you
- 0:41find out what's happening
- 0:41with the ocean, how you can speak up for
- 0:43the ocean, and what you
- 0:44can do to live for a better
- 0:45ocean by taking action.
- 0:48On today's episode, we're going to be
- 0:49talking about the US
- 0:51fisheries rollback so that it
- 0:53allows for I guess what US President
- 0:57Donald Trump wants is
- 0:58global dominance, especially
- 0:59in the Pacific on fisheries latest
- 1:02announcement coming out of
- 1:03the White House saying that
- 1:05they want to fish more
- 1:07in the Pacific right now.
- 1:10They are contributing about 25% of the
- 1:12amount of fishing that
- 1:14goes on in the Pacific, and
- 1:16they want to open that up.
- 1:17And how are they going to open that up?
- 1:19They're going to open it up in their own
- 1:20waters that is protected.
- 1:22The Pacific Remote Islands
- 1:24Marine National Monument.
- 1:26I've been rehearsing that I didn't really
- 1:28get it off the bat,
- 1:29but the Pacific Remote
- 1:31Islands Marine National
- 1:32Monument is going to be opened up.
- 1:34It's 400,000 square acres of water,
- 1:38pristine coral reefs
- 1:39that's home to marine mammals,
- 1:40sea turtles, sharks, fish, coral reefs,
- 1:44seabirds, all sorts of
- 1:46things that make this wonderful
- 1:48habitat just beautiful.
- 1:50It was originally protected in 2009,
- 1:52designated in 2009, and
- 1:54then it was later expanded in
- 1:562014, which was amazing.
- 1:58People don't realize how long it takes
- 2:00for these national
- 2:01monuments to be designated.
- 2:03The planning, the workshops, the
- 2:05stakeholder engagement, the
- 2:07public comment, everything
- 2:08that goes into it.
- 2:09It takes years, if not decades, to be
- 2:12able to make sure that
- 2:13these are implemented and
- 2:15not only implemented
- 2:15properly and managed properly.
- 2:18And that's what it's been doing.
- 2:19It's been managed properly for the last
- 2:2010 years or even more
- 2:22since it was designated.
- 2:23So to see that the environmental
- 2:26regulations are going to be rolled back
- 2:28is really disappointing.
- 2:30We're going to see this happening more
- 2:31and more in the U.S.
- 2:32As they, you know, we know Donald Trump
- 2:34is not somebody who
- 2:35wants to have environmental
- 2:37regulations.
- 2:38This is a very common thing to see with
- 2:41Republicans or conservatives
- 2:43around the world where they
- 2:45think that economic prosperity is
- 2:47hindered by regulations.
- 2:49It does slow down the process, no doubt
- 2:51about it, as it should
- 2:52and as it's designed to do.
- 2:54It's designed to make sure that people
- 2:56are thinking about the
- 2:57environment, making sure
- 2:58that people do the proper assessments
- 3:00around the environment
- 3:01to ensure that they're not
- 3:02destroying the environment and their
- 3:04quest to get money or
- 3:05their quest to develop.
- 3:06And that's what we
- 3:07have to be careful about.
- 3:08We've seen collapse of fisheries before.
- 3:12We will see collapse of fisheries again
- 3:14if they are not managed properly.
- 3:16Protected areas are there to make sure
- 3:19that fisheries can prosper,
- 3:22just not in certain areas.
- 3:24Marine protected areas are
- 3:25designed to enhance fisheries.
- 3:28I know it sounds weird, but when you
- 3:30protect an area of 400,000
- 3:32acres, you allow fish within
- 3:34that area to prosper.
- 3:36And then that there's a spillover effect
- 3:38from the borders of that marine protected
- 3:39area that goes outside the borders and
- 3:42that allows fishermen to prosper.
- 3:44And I think that's what
- 3:45really people don't understand.
- 3:47You need to protect and prevent
- 3:49extractive processes like
- 3:51fishing so that you can fish
- 3:53for a longer time and
- 3:54it's more sustainable.
- 3:56That's the key here,
- 3:57sustainability of fisheries.
- 3:59When you open up a marine protected area,
- 4:01it's like for
- 4:02fisheries, why bother protecting
- 4:04it?
- 4:04You're going to get
- 4:05destructive fisheries.
- 4:06You're going to get unmanaged fisheries.
- 4:09You're not going to have quotas.
- 4:11It sounds like you're not going to have
- 4:12management of any type of fisheries and
- 4:15you'll have short-term
- 4:16gain, but you're going to pay for it in
- 4:18the long term, which to be
- 4:20honest, a lot of governments
- 4:22don't really see.
- 4:23They look at the next four years.
- 4:24They look at the next five years in case
- 4:26of Canada's terms when
- 4:27we have our governments
- 4:28in.
- 4:29It's so frustrating when you see
- 4:31governments do this over
- 4:33and over and over again.
- 4:35It's like they're not paying attention.
- 4:37It's like they don't really
- 4:38care about the environment.
- 4:39All they care is economic prosperity and
- 4:42being number one, which
- 4:43is what we're seeing in
- 4:44this case here.
- 4:45So if the US wants to be number one in
- 4:48their fisheries in the
- 4:49Pacific, they would have
- 4:50to increase their catch by
- 4:5211.2 million metric tons.
- 4:57That's a lot of fishing.
- 4:58Currently in the Pacific, they sit about
- 5:00fourth or fifth in the
- 5:02standings, I guess behind
- 5:03China.
- 5:04They're number one, of course, and the US
- 5:07is currently probably
- 5:08taking out about two
- 5:09million metric tons estimated.
- 5:11They would have to increase 11.2 to even
- 5:14match the 13.2 million
- 5:16metric tons that China is
- 5:18taking out every year.
- 5:19And we know that China's fleet has had
- 5:21problems in the past.
- 5:22They're very controversial.
- 5:23They go all over the world in the
- 5:25Pacific, like different
- 5:26countries or outside different
- 5:27countries in the international treaty
- 5:30area and they will fish
- 5:32and they will fish without
- 5:34regulations.
- 5:34They will fish as much as possible.
- 5:36And I guess to compete with that, you
- 5:38have to do the same.
- 5:39You have to fish without worrying about
- 5:40management, without
- 5:42worrying about a lot of things.
- 5:43And that's a problem.
- 5:45That's a problem right there to be able
- 5:47to try and just be number one.
- 5:48This is an ongoing thing that the US
- 5:50wants to do, that they want
- 5:52to increase their self-reliance
- 5:53in a number of areas.
- 5:55And I guess now this
- 5:56is including fisheries.
- 5:57They currently import
- 5:5990% of their fisheries.
- 6:01And so they want to increase their
- 6:03domestic take, I assume, and so that they
- 6:05can be more self-reliant.
- 6:07So that makes sense in a way.
- 6:09But to do it by opening up a marine
- 6:11protected area doesn't make sense.
- 6:13It doesn't make sense
- 6:14for long-term prosperity.
- 6:16It doesn't make sense to protect this
- 6:18wonderful area that is pristine.
- 6:22Beautiful coral reefs.
- 6:23Like I said before, marine mammals
- 6:24protecting like, monk seals protecting
- 6:27sea turtles, protecting sea birds,
- 6:29protecting sharks, all these different
- 6:31species that it protects.
- 6:33And it's working.
- 6:34And now they're just going to open it up
- 6:36and we're going to see
- 6:38devastation in that area
- 6:39because industry has been wanting to get
- 6:42into that area for a long time.
- 6:44They haven't been able to.
- 6:45They've been strong proponents to be able
- 6:47to fish more and they're going to get it
- 6:50under this government.
- 6:51This is a time where you need to help.
- 6:55And to help is to contact
- 6:56your government representative.
- 6:58This is where it counts.
- 7:00If you don't want to see the Pacific
- 7:01remote islands marine national monument
- 7:04to be opened up to fishing, then it's
- 7:06time to contact your federal, your state,
- 7:08especially if you live in Hawaii.
- 7:10Representatives to say, hey, you know
- 7:12what? We don't want this. This is awful.
- 7:14This is a really bad idea.
- 7:15And there must be checks and balances to
- 7:18be able to open this up or
- 7:19to stop this from opening up.
- 7:21You know, maybe talk to your Congress
- 7:22person, talk to your senator.
- 7:24This is where it counts.
- 7:25And if you're not in Hawaii and you want,
- 7:28you know, somebody in Hawaii to listen,
- 7:31then talk to them as well, whether you're
- 7:33in that state or not, talk
- 7:34to them because it matters.
- 7:35Tell them the stories of what you want to
- 7:37see in terms of a sustainable ocean,
- 7:41especially in the Pacific.
- 7:42So that's the episode here from Jamaica.
- 7:44I hope you think about what's being done
- 7:46in the U.S. and it goes to
- 7:47show that voting matters.
- 7:48And if you want to protect the
- 7:50environment, you want to protect
- 7:52fisheries, you want to protect pristine
- 7:55environments and marine protect areas
- 7:56that have already been designated.
- 7:59Then we need to really make sure that we
- 8:01vote properly and remember this in two
- 8:04years when the midterms come in and to
- 8:06start to make a change.
- 8:08So that's it for today's episode.
- 8:09I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

- 8:12you're watching this on YouTube.
