- 0:00The natural seat of the guna of Satwa is in the mental being,
- 0:05rajas in the vital being and tamas in the physical being.
- 0:11This is not to imply that there are not times and situations
- 0:16where one of the other qualities comes forward in any of these
- 0:19three aspects of our external being.
- 0:22On the contrary, we can identify tamasic and rajasic elements in
- 0:26the mental being, as well as Sutwick and temasic elements in
- 0:31the vital being and Sutwick and rajasic elements in the physical
- 0:36being. The natural seat simply implies
- 0:41that the most prominent general location for a particular guna
- 0:44in action lies in a portion of the being that is prone to
- 0:48express the kind of characteristics associated with
- 0:53that guna. If we focus then on the physical
- 0:57being and the situation of the coming to the fore of the
- 1:01quality of Thomas, we can experience it as a dullness,
- 1:06unwillingness to do anything, emptiness, darkness, and a sense
- 1:11of nothing being able to move forward.
- 1:15For a spiritual aspirant, this is an extremely uncomfortable
- 1:19status, yet he may feel quite overwhelmed by the intensity of
- 1:24the darkness and the potential despair that accompanies it.
- 1:30In these moments, it is difficult for the seeker to see
- 1:33that there's any way out of this morass.
- 1:37It is important that he recognize that the gunas are
- 1:40always in motion and that none of them can hold the field
- 1:45forever. Eventually, the only solution is
- 1:49to keep going, putting 1 foot in front of the other and moving
- 1:54forward. However slow, however difficult,
- 1:58however tiresome, and however hopeless it seems.
- 2:03It may help to reflect on Milarepa's experience.
- 2:07Wracked by all consuming guilt for the suffering he had caused,
- 2:11seeking revenge through use of black magic, he sought out a
- 2:15guru to guide him towards spiritual realization.
- 2:18In one lifetime. The guru, rather than providing
- 2:23the teachings he was granting to other disciples, put Milarepa to
- 2:27work doing back breaking, building and then unbuilding of
- 2:31stone structures without taking any assistance, using his own
- 2:35physical body as the sole means of carrying out this work.
- 2:40This went on for some years and eventually Milarepa reached a
- 2:46state of extreme despair that he would ever get the necessary
- 2:50teachings and achieve the realization to the point that he
- 2:54even considered committing suicide.
- 2:59It was only after this long dark period that he was actually
- 3:02given the teachings which would eventually lead to a liberated
- 3:06state of consciousness. His tribulations go far beyond
- 3:11what most people immersed in the dull routine of the physical
- 3:15consciousness have to bear, and they went on for far longer than
- 3:20most people are stuck in that dull, meaningless routine of the
- 3:24daily round without seeming purpose or even energy to make
- 3:29it interesting or even remotely leading to progress.
- 3:35Srioro Bindu observes quote at the mercy of the external sounds
- 3:41and external bodily sensations. No control to drop the ordinary
- 3:46consciousness. It will the whole tendency of
- 3:50the being away from yoga. All that is unmistakably
- 3:55applicable to the physical mind and the physical consciousness,
- 4:00when they isolate themselves, as it were, and take up the whole
- 4:07front, pushing the rest into the background, When a part of the
- 4:13being is brought forward to be worked upon for change, this
- 4:16kind of all occupying emergence, the dominant activity, that part
- 4:22as if it alone existed, very usually happens.
- 4:26And unfortunately it is always what has to be changed, the
- 4:30undesirable conditions, the difficulties of that part which
- 4:35rise 1st and obstinately hold the field and recur in the
- 4:41physical. It is inertia, obscurity,
- 4:44inability that come up, and the obstinacy of these things.
- 4:50The only thing to do in this unpleasant phase is to be more
- 4:53obstinate than the physical inertia and to persist in a
- 4:58fixed endeavor, steady persistency without any restless
- 5:03struggle to get a wide and permanent opening made even in
- 5:08this solid rock of obstruction. End Quote Reference Sri Robindo,
