- 2:57Speaker 3: five zero zero a well, this past Thursday night during
- 3:00Speaker 3: they're regularly scheduled meeting the Kanawh County Commission. Uh, very
- 3:04Speaker 3: very busy, Natalie Tennant to Coreceiite being the first ever
- 3:08Speaker 3: Kanawh County Commissioner in the body's history. But it wasn't
- 3:11Speaker 3: the only news, as we now have a new County
- 3:13Speaker 3: Commission president. It is Ben Selango and he joins us. Now,
- 3:16Speaker 3: good morning, sir, good morning, Thank you for me well,
- 3:20Speaker 3: thanks for being here. Thanks for being here, mister Commission president.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Oh no, just call me Ben, call all right. So right,
- 3:27Speaker 3: let me add So how are this is going to
- 3:29Speaker 3: be a very very simple question. But I'm a simple guy.
- 3:32Speaker 3: How are presidents chosen? I mean it rotates, uh named
- 3:36Speaker 3: John out of a hat? Is like a foot race
- 3:39Speaker 3: has to strength. I mean, it's it's a vote.
- 3:41Speaker 6: Every January, we do the organizational meeting and uh we
- 3:45Speaker 6: vote and okay, it's it's not really something that you
- 3:50Speaker 6: I mean, we don't really lobby for it. It's not
- 3:53Speaker 6: it's never really been kind of a Honestly, it's never
- 3:57Speaker 6: been a big deal. The commission president sets the agenda,
- 3:59Speaker 6: but his historically, we've always anytime a commissioner wants something
- 4:03Speaker 6: on the agenda, they can get it there. That doesn't
- 4:06Speaker 6: mean they're going to win the vote, but they can
- 4:08Speaker 6: certainly get it on the agenda. So, I mean, it's
- 4:11Speaker 6: a it's a title. It really doesn't care the vote,
- 4:14Speaker 6: doesn't weigh anymore than the other two commissioners. It's it's
- 4:17Speaker 6: just a title. So you say it's it's a lot,
- 4:19Speaker 6: it's a lot more work. You know, commissioned President Lance,
- 4:22Speaker 6: we either did a he did a great job over
- 4:24Speaker 6: the last year. I mean, Lance is as sharp as attack,
- 4:29Speaker 6: very hard working and did a great job as president.
- 4:33Speaker 4: You know.
- 4:33Speaker 6: He came in at a time when there was a
- 4:35Speaker 6: lot going on, the kind of commission we had, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 6: there was just a lot going on, and he stepped
- 4:40Speaker 6: up and really took the reins and spent a lot
- 4:44Speaker 6: of time, you know, making sure that the budget was
- 4:48Speaker 6: worked out, that we didn't have any issues, and and uh, yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 6: he did a wonderful job.
- 4:53Speaker 3: But you are now the president.
- 4:56Speaker 6: Yes, as of Thursday night, they voted me the President's
- 5:00Speaker 6: So when I leave here, I'm going to head out
- 5:02Speaker 6: to the County Commission and we're gonna start talking about budgets.
- 5:05Speaker 3: All the fun stuff, the fun stuff. I want to
- 5:08Speaker 3: talk for a moment about Natalie Tenant being added to
- 5:10Speaker 3: the commission thus becoming been the first female commissioner in
- 5:14Speaker 3: the history of Kanawha County. In programming note, I was
- 5:17Speaker 3: texting with Commissioner Tenant on Friday. I'll try to have
- 5:19Speaker 3: her on this show, probably later this week when she
- 5:21Speaker 3: can get her schedule straight. Now, but let's talk about
- 5:24Speaker 3: adding Natalie Tenant to the team.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, Natalie has got so much energy and
- 5:28Speaker 6: she is She's an incredibly hard worker, lots of ideas,
- 5:32Speaker 6: so I'm excited to have her on. She obviously is
- 5:35Speaker 6: the first female, so she's gonna have a unique perspective.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Isn't that hard to believe though, in the entire history
- 5:40Speaker 3: of Kanawac County. I mean, if somebody brought that up
- 5:42Speaker 3: to me the other in the entire history of Kanawha County,
- 5:45Speaker 3: largest county in the state, that she's the first female.
- 5:49Speaker 6: And we also we elected the first female prosecutor. Okay,
- 5:52Speaker 6: there had never been a female prosecutor at Connaw County history.
- 5:54Speaker 6: So a lot of people don't know this, but Knaw
- 5:56Speaker 6: County is older than the state of West Virginia. I mean,
- 5:58Speaker 6: knag County was was part of Virginia and is I
- 6:03Speaker 6: think around seventy five years older than the state. And
- 6:05Speaker 6: so if you go back, I mean you're talking about
- 6:07Speaker 6: two hundred and some years where Kennall County has been around.
- 6:10Speaker 6: There's never been a female commissioner or a female prosecutor.
- 6:14Speaker 6: And that changed both at you know, at the same time.
- 6:19Speaker 6: And so yeah, we're anxious to and debrahsn is going
- 6:21Speaker 6: to do a great job and has been doing a
- 6:23Speaker 6: great job. And I think Natalie's going to bring a
- 6:26Speaker 6: lot to the table. Natalie likes to understand how things work,
- 6:30Speaker 6: and so she really gets down to the nitty gritty
- 6:32Speaker 6: and to the details of every issue. And she's already
- 6:36Speaker 6: started doing that well.
- 6:37Speaker 3: And she's somebody who's former secretary of State. She brings
- 6:40Speaker 3: a journalism aspect into it as a former TV news anchor,
- 6:44Speaker 3: and then she's run for other offices in the States,
- 6:47Speaker 3: So she brings a lot to the table.
- 6:49Speaker 6: She does, and she has a statewide perspective. I mean,
- 6:52Speaker 6: given that she was the Secretary of State for so long,
- 6:55Speaker 6: I mean, she knows elections, she understands budget. She'll do
- 6:59Speaker 6: a great job I think and brings a lot of
- 7:03Speaker 6: energy and a lot of unique experience to the Commission.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Talking with the new County Commission President here in Kanawk County,
- 7:10Speaker 3: Ben Selango, but Dave Island showing five Any Life brought
- 7:12Speaker 3: to you in part by Hustin's Pizza. This month at
- 7:14Speaker 3: your favorite Hustin's, get a large at Nitch Pepperoni Pizza
- 7:17Speaker 3: and any pizza bowl only twenty two to ninety nine.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Find your nearest Hustans for delivery pickupper dined in at
- 7:22Speaker 3: Hustons Pizza dot com. So what is it that's got
- 7:24Speaker 3: Kanawha County Commission President Bensulango excited about the county going
- 7:28Speaker 3: into twenty twenty five.
- 7:29Speaker 6: We've got a lot of projects going on and both
- 7:31Speaker 6: the exciting and nervous quite frankly, We've got you know,
- 7:35Speaker 6: the Judicial Anact. We're getting ready put that back out
- 7:37Speaker 6: to bid. The fifth floor is going to be bid
- 7:39Speaker 6: separately from the downstairs part of the Judicial and Acts.
- 7:42Speaker 6: That's a major construction project. It's going to go out
- 7:46Speaker 6: to bid pretty soon, at least the fifth floor, and
- 7:49Speaker 6: then we're going to do the first floor after we
- 7:51Speaker 6: do a little redesign. So that's going out. Obviously, the
- 7:55Speaker 6: Capital Sports Center we're working on that. We should be
- 7:58Speaker 6: able to announce the revised plan pretty soon. We're already
- 8:00Speaker 6: discussing dates on when we're going to do that, probably
- 8:02Speaker 6: going to be sometime in February. So that's a that's
- 8:05Speaker 6: a that's a gigantic project. I mean, that's something that
- 8:09Speaker 6: it's and.
- 8:09Speaker 3: It's a project that's kind of changed over the course
- 8:13Speaker 3: of time.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Yeah, it it definitely has.
- 8:14Speaker 6: When we announced it, you know, I thought we would
- 8:16Speaker 6: be able to get a lot more the property than
- 8:19Speaker 6: we were able to get. Construction costs we're a lot
- 8:22Speaker 6: lower at the time and we announced it. Now it's
- 8:24Speaker 6: up about forty percent thirty to forty percent depending on
- 8:28Speaker 6: your area. But uh, you know, the square footage for
- 8:31Speaker 6: construction is way up, and so we want to do it,
- 8:35Speaker 6: we want to do it right, but we also have
- 8:36Speaker 6: to keep our budget in mind and so that so
- 8:40Speaker 6: we just got to scale it back.
- 8:41Speaker 4: You know.
- 8:41Speaker 6: Eventually, if we can add on the additional parts, then
- 8:43Speaker 6: we will, but otherwise we're going to press forward with
- 8:46Speaker 6: the part that's going to bring people into town, you know,
- 8:49Speaker 6: the volleyball, the basketball, that's going to pack hotels, just
- 8:53Speaker 6: like the Shawnee Sports Complex has. We know which sports
- 8:56Speaker 6: travel you know, we've done, We've had studies done. We
- 9:00Speaker 6: pay attention to national studies and national statistics. We know
- 9:04Speaker 6: which sports will bring people into town to you know,
- 9:07Speaker 6: pack our hotels and pack our restaurants and have people shopping.
- 9:11Speaker 6: So that's that's kind of what we're focused on.
- 9:13Speaker 3: It just seems like that, oh, the last week, with
- 9:15Speaker 3: the weather and everything, everything's just kind of come to
- 9:16Speaker 3: a grinding halt. You know, there's been a whole lot
- 9:19Speaker 3: going on.
- 9:20Speaker 6: I think I was one of the only people on
- 9:21Speaker 6: Capitol Street on Monday. It was it was nasty out,
- 9:25Speaker 6: but yeah, you know, and our folks over to the
- 9:28Speaker 6: county have done a great job, and so of the cities,
- 9:31Speaker 6: you know, the City of Charleston, City of South Charleston
- 9:33Speaker 6: and all the cities have done a great job trying
- 9:34Speaker 6: to keep the streets clean and the sidewalks clear and
- 9:37Speaker 6: you know, keep everyone safe. And we even recognize a
- 9:42Speaker 6: couple of the county employees on Thursday for going above
- 9:45Speaker 6: and beyond the call of duty. Metro Namal one has
- 9:48Speaker 6: done a great job. I mean, the volume of calls
- 9:51Speaker 6: that they get during a storm like this. Uh and
- 9:55Speaker 6: uh so you know the Sheriff's department of course, but
- 9:58Speaker 6: uh yeah, last week was very challenging. I'm looking forward
- 10:01Speaker 6: to warmer weather well, and you're not going to have
- 10:03Speaker 6: it for very long.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I mean, we respecting temperatures like in the mid to
- 10:06Speaker 3: upper thirties, much like yesterday, but then we got colder
- 10:08Speaker 3: weather coming in. The good news is though, is as
- 10:10Speaker 3: of right now, it doesn't look like a lot of
- 10:12Speaker 3: whole lot of snow and ice. That's what we had,
- 10:14Speaker 3: just some limited, limited stuff there. Let's talk about some
- 10:20Speaker 3: of the problems, or at least the issues facing the
- 10:24Speaker 3: Canon County Commission in Cana County going into the twenty.
- 10:26Speaker 6: Twenty five PIA and the jail bill.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Those are the two biggest things. You know.
- 10:31Speaker 6: PIA, we're expecting probably an eight hundre thousand dollars increase
- 10:36Speaker 6: this year. We've got to figure out how to pay
- 10:37Speaker 6: for that. Jail bill has been trending upward. We had
- 10:43Speaker 6: some legislation put through a couple of years ago that
- 10:47Speaker 6: saved us some money, but unfortunately that's kind of creeping
- 10:49Speaker 6: up again. And so those are the two biggest costs
- 10:53Speaker 6: for the county that we have to really pay attention to.
- 10:55Speaker 6: We've got to make sure that we're doing all we
- 10:58Speaker 6: can to keep pi uh it's not affordable, but as
- 11:03Speaker 6: affordable as possible, so that we don't have to pass
- 11:06Speaker 6: that on to our employees, so that we don't have
- 11:07Speaker 6: to pass that on to uh, you know, additional costs
- 11:10Speaker 6: on the taxpayers. So that's kind of the biggest thing.
- 11:12Speaker 6: Making sure that our budget's under control is honestly, that's
- 11:15Speaker 6: the number one priority.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Do you foresee any any possible cuts come into the budget?
- 11:20Speaker 6: You know what, That's what I'm gonna chat about today.
- 11:22Speaker 6: I think there are some things, some discretionary spending that
- 11:25Speaker 6: we had done in the past that we may not
- 11:27Speaker 6: be able to do as much now this year, maybe
- 11:30Speaker 6: next year. So we're gonna we're gonna watch that. And
- 11:32Speaker 6: we've got to watch our revenue, see, you know, make
- 11:35Speaker 6: sure that revenues are coming in.
- 11:37Speaker 7: Uh.
- 11:37Speaker 4: But controlling costs.
- 11:38Speaker 3: You know, there's it's not rocket science.
- 11:40Speaker 7: You know.
- 11:40Speaker 6: You either increase your revenue or you have to decrease
- 11:43Speaker 6: your costs. That's how you balance a budget. Uh, so
- 11:45Speaker 6: one of the other.
- 11:46Speaker 7: Uh.
- 11:47Speaker 6: But the revenues as long as they are you know,
- 11:49Speaker 6: people are paying the taxes. We're getting that in h
- 11:52Speaker 6: and as long as our costs stay close to where
- 11:55Speaker 6: they are, we should be okay. But if we have
- 11:57Speaker 6: to cut expenses, we will again.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Canaan County Commission President of the new county. Is this
- 12:02Speaker 3: your first time as county commission.
- 12:03Speaker 6: For it is, I have been on the Commission for
- 12:05Speaker 6: eight years, and this is the first time that I've
- 12:08Speaker 6: been president.
- 12:09Speaker 4: So we'll see maybe the last time.
- 12:13Speaker 3: I'm not going to go there. I'm not going to
- 12:15Speaker 3: go there. Well, I mean, you know, here's the thing
- 12:16Speaker 3: about it is, you've got a good group of people
- 12:18Speaker 3: there with the County Commission, with Commissioner Wheeler, who you
- 12:20Speaker 3: the outgoing president. He's still on the commission, but he's
- 12:23Speaker 3: not going president. In my opinion, I think he does
- 12:26Speaker 3: a great job. I think Natalie Tennant's going to do
- 12:28Speaker 3: a great job as County Commissioner as well. So we
- 12:30Speaker 3: got you got a good group there.
- 12:31Speaker 6: I probably will be blowing up Commission Wheeler's phone from
- 12:35Speaker 6: time to time just to get his thoughts, and uh,
- 12:39Speaker 6: you know, the real thing is we've got great staff.
- 12:42Speaker 6: I mean, you know, losing Jennifer Harold when she moved
- 12:45Speaker 6: to South Carolina was a significant blow to the county.
- 12:49Speaker 6: But Jeremy Young has stepped up and he's doing a
- 12:51Speaker 6: wonderful job. I had him on the show a couple
- 12:53Speaker 6: of weeks ago. Ye yeah, I mean he is in
- 12:55Speaker 6: the you know, he was the county manager for Putnam
- 12:57Speaker 6: County and did a great job there. So we were
- 12:59Speaker 6: so glad to have him on board. And you know
- 13:02Speaker 6: the rest of our staff, they just do a remarkable job,
- 13:04Speaker 6: and they're hard working and they're not nine to five ers.
- 13:07Speaker 6: You know, it's you know, when you're when you're working
- 13:10Speaker 6: for the county, it is a honestly, it's more than
- 13:13Speaker 6: a full time job. And uh, you know, I think
- 13:16Speaker 6: Jeremy is he knew that from Putnam County, certainly understanding
- 13:19Speaker 6: it now.
- 13:19Speaker 3: And it's I will let you go on this. It's
- 13:21Speaker 3: a big day here in Charleston for the Sate of
- 13:23Speaker 3: West Virginia inauguration day going on. We got all these
- 13:26Speaker 3: different people in different positions, you know in the capital. Uh,
- 13:30Speaker 3: the ag commissioner was the only one that's keeping the
- 13:32Speaker 3: current job. You got a new Secretary of State, you
- 13:34Speaker 3: got new of course, new governor, you got you got
- 13:36Speaker 3: one one new congressman in the state. You got a
- 13:39Speaker 3: new senator in Jim Justice, so, uh, a lot of
- 13:41Speaker 3: changes in the capital, a lot of changes everywhere.
- 13:43Speaker 4: There have been a lot of changes.
- 13:45Speaker 7: You know.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I'm excited for uh Governor Patrick Morrisey.
- 13:48Speaker 6: I know he was sworn in last night at midnight officially,
- 13:50Speaker 6: and I think he's going to do a wonderful job.
- 13:53Speaker 7: He is.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Uh.
- 13:54Speaker 6: You know, I've witnessed how hard of a worker he is.
- 13:58Speaker 6: You know, there was one time Terry and I went
- 13:59Speaker 6: out to a restaurant and he was over there. He
- 14:02Speaker 6: had just a stack of papers. He was sitting there
- 14:04Speaker 6: eating by himself, making phone calls.
- 14:06Speaker 4: You know.
- 14:07Speaker 6: So I've seen his I've seen his work ethic. I've
- 14:10Speaker 6: talked to him numerous times, and I think he's going
- 14:13Speaker 6: to do a wonderful job.
- 14:13Speaker 3: And his County Commission, you know, the entire body. You know,
- 14:16Speaker 3: you you lean heavily on the Capitol for different things.
- 14:19Speaker 4: We do.
- 14:19Speaker 6: We we certainly do and uh, you know that's that's
- 14:22Speaker 6: another thing. Commission Commission Wheeler has done a great job
- 14:24Speaker 6: at is working with our legislative delegation and trying to
- 14:29Speaker 6: get legislation that's favorable to the counties, you know, helping
- 14:32Speaker 6: us save money, helping with safety, helping with our first responders,
- 14:37Speaker 6: Metro namal one with their retirement bill. Those are the
- 14:40Speaker 6: and and he has done an incredible job since he's
- 14:43Speaker 6: joined the Commission doing that. But I'm axious to work
- 14:46Speaker 6: with the new administration, you know, uh, top to bottom
- 14:49Speaker 6: and make sure that we are working well together. And
- 14:52Speaker 6: and I think Patrick Morris will do a great job.
- 14:54Speaker 3: All right, we'll be talking soon. County Commission President here
- 14:57Speaker 3: Kanawa County, Ben Slanga, appreciate you being here, banks Man,
- 14:59Speaker 3: Thanks a lot. It is a nine to twenty two

- 18:04Speaker 7: Good morning, Dave. How are you.
- 18:06Speaker 3: I am doing fine. I know it's a busy day
- 18:09Speaker 3: for you folks over there, just like it is for
- 18:10Speaker 3: us here as you're getting ready for the inauguration, So
- 18:13Speaker 3: I won't keep you too long. I do want to
- 18:15Speaker 3: talk about Mark Curtis, though. I mean, what a pro
- 18:18Speaker 3: genuinely good guy who's gonna be missed. And he picked
- 18:21Speaker 3: a heck of a great time to move to Florida.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I'll say that for him.
- 18:27Speaker 7: Yeah, we can always question his timing. Uh, but yeah,
- 18:30Speaker 7: I mean he uh you know what he had. He's
- 18:33Speaker 7: earned that and we're over and happy for him. He's
- 18:36Speaker 7: done in the sunshine, And you know, I just don't
- 18:39Speaker 7: want to he wants to do. I talked to him
- 18:41Speaker 7: several times and test it back and forth, and uh,
- 18:45Speaker 7: you know, I look at it this way. I could never, never,
- 18:48Speaker 7: ever fill Mark's shoes in this position, but I can
- 18:52Speaker 7: stand on his shoulders and there you go. That's sort
- 18:55Speaker 7: of that's sort of the way I look at it.
- 18:57Speaker 7: And uh, you know, so we had our first show
- 19:00Speaker 7: over this past weekend, working another one coming up this weekend.
- 19:04Speaker 7: So it never stops. Really.
- 19:07Speaker 3: So how long have you been at thirteen?
- 19:10Speaker 7: Almost twelve years? You'll be twelve years. What month is this, January? Yeah,
- 19:15Speaker 7: first week of February, you know, it'll be twelve. It's
- 19:19Speaker 7: hard to believe. Yeah, twelve years.
- 19:21Speaker 3: And of course the show inside Westervirginia Politics Air is
- 19:24Speaker 3: not only here but all over the state on the
- 19:26Speaker 3: next to our family stations in the DC market too. RJ.
- 19:29Speaker 7: Yes, it does have a responsibility there, but I try
- 19:33Speaker 7: to look at it, you know. You know this day,
- 19:35Speaker 7: we always in radio try to think of the whole
- 19:38Speaker 7: thing is we're talking to one person at a time,
- 19:41Speaker 7: and that's the way I kind of feel on this
- 19:45Speaker 7: particular platform. It's one if you are at a time,
- 19:48Speaker 7: and I try not to let my mind get wrapped
- 19:50Speaker 7: up in all the other things. We love our next
- 19:52Speaker 7: our stations in the state, and of course we're in
- 19:54Speaker 7: DC and we're going to do our best to serve

- 20:11Speaker 3: about your career in broadcasting. Of course, you remember the
- 20:14Speaker 3: West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame. It's in your blood, man,
- 20:17Speaker 3: just like it's in mind. Talk about your career as
- 20:21Speaker 3: a whole. How did you get to be Rick Johnson?
- 20:25Speaker 7: Well, I grew up here. I wasn't born here, but
- 20:28Speaker 7: I grew up in there in Kanawa County, went to
- 20:32Speaker 7: schools in Saint Alban's Parkway Elementary St. Alveust junior in
- 20:36Speaker 7: high school, took a couple of years at West Virginia State.
- 20:40Speaker 7: But I really at that point was already getting into radio,
- 20:43Speaker 7: and radio just consumed me full time. And so that's
- 20:47Speaker 7: that's where, you know, things got really on track for me.
- 20:51Speaker 7: And I did forty plus years on radio all and
- 20:54Speaker 7: right here in this market, everyone anywhere else, right here
- 20:58Speaker 7: in the Charleston market, and I just loved it. I mean,
- 21:01Speaker 7: when I was a kid, I listened to radio. I
- 21:03Speaker 7: think because not only the music, but also I loved
- 21:06Speaker 7: listening to the DJs. I loved listening to the jingles.
- 21:09Speaker 11: Uh.
- 21:10Speaker 7: It was just kind of I guess that was weird.
- 21:12Speaker 3: You know, No, same same here, buddies say, I mean,
- 21:14Speaker 3: and and people that are like we are don't even
- 21:17Speaker 3: as a kid.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Uh.
- 21:18Speaker 3: And I've told this story on the air before, back
- 21:20Speaker 3: in the eighties. Uh, you know, boomboxes worth thing, and
- 21:23Speaker 3: all my friends would record music from the radio and
- 21:26Speaker 3: would get upset when the disc jockey would talk. I
- 21:30Speaker 3: was recording the disc jockeys. I couldn't care less about
- 21:33Speaker 3: the music. I wanted to hear the and now I
- 21:35Speaker 3: was recording them doing the weather and traffic. That's how
- 21:38Speaker 3: weird I was. So don't come at me with that
- 21:40Speaker 3: weird stuff, Johnson. I'm right there with you, buddy, Okay.
- 21:43Speaker 7: I feel I feel much better now. That's how it's
- 21:47Speaker 7: some of things like you. In a way, it's in
- 21:49Speaker 7: our DNA and so it's just and opportunities happened for me,
- 21:55Speaker 7: doors open for me. I didn't. I didn't knock on
- 21:58Speaker 7: the door. Doors open for me, Like yeah, well, this
- 22:00Speaker 7: is another sign it's meant to be for me, and
- 22:03Speaker 7: so I just I wrote that wagon as long as
- 22:05Speaker 7: I could, and I loved every minute of it. I
- 22:08Speaker 7: love working down at eleven eleven Virginia Street East. Started
- 22:11Speaker 7: out at two stations at that twelve V one hundred
- 22:15Speaker 7: and our AM station in conn offs Age six eighty,
- 22:17Speaker 7: so we had two stations there. West Virginia Radio Corporation
- 22:21Speaker 7: bought us in the early nineties. We moved over to
- 22:23Speaker 7: Virginia Street with them and had a great career there
- 22:27Speaker 7: as well. So yeah, now, again very hard to believe,
- 22:31Speaker 7: twelve years in television news, but I work with a
- 22:34Speaker 7: really great group of people there at thirteen News. Great ownership,
- 22:39Speaker 7: great management. I'm not just saying that, I really really
- 22:42Speaker 7: do appreciate the opportunity to work where I am.
- 22:45Speaker 3: And of course you spent many.
- 22:46Speaker 7: Years there at thirteen News. Great ownership, great management. I'm
- 22:50Speaker 7: not just saying that, I really really do appreciate the
- 22:53Speaker 7: opportunity to work where I am.
- 22:55Speaker 3: And of course you spent many years behind the microphone,
- 22:58Speaker 3: and even since you've been over there, you've been kind
- 22:59Speaker 3: of behind the scenes. Now you're going to go on camera.
- 23:03Speaker 3: That's a little bit different for US radio people. And
- 23:06Speaker 3: it's something that I'm going to be fighted out here
- 23:08Speaker 3: real soon because next month or so, once they get
- 23:10Speaker 3: our new studio built and we move back into the
- 23:13Speaker 3: studio that you occupied for many years, the WCHS studio,
- 23:17Speaker 3: I'm actually going to be on camera as well. So
- 23:19Speaker 3: I got to get used to that's a little bit
- 23:21Speaker 3: weird having those cameras on you.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Man.
- 23:24Speaker 7: You know, it is something that it's all difficult to
- 23:28Speaker 7: working on that. But again, I try to imagine, I'm
- 23:31Speaker 7: just talking to one person at a time right now.
- 23:33Speaker 7: Don't worry about anything else. Just worry about that one
- 23:35Speaker 7: person who's watching, and it helps me calm down a
- 23:39Speaker 7: little bit. But it's a process, a learning process. And
- 23:43Speaker 7: I was thinking, I'm actually talking to you from my
- 23:46Speaker 7: car over here at the Capital Grounds in the Capitol
- 23:49Speaker 7: Parking Building getting ready for the inauguration of Patrick Morrissey
- 23:54Speaker 7: here as governor. And I remember I was over here
- 23:58Speaker 7: in nineteen seventy seven January nineteen seventy seven when Jay
- 24:02Speaker 7: Rockefeller was inaugurated and it was the coldest and I've
- 24:05Speaker 7: seen it, the coldest inauguration in the history of the
- 24:10Speaker 7: state of West Virginia and it was minus ten degrees
- 24:13Speaker 7: over ninth and during the day it was like around
- 24:16Speaker 7: six degrees above zero, So it was about six degrees
- 24:21Speaker 7: above zero when we were sitting over here behind the
- 24:25Speaker 7: Capitol Building for Jay Rockefeller's inauguration. So full circle, man,
- 24:29Speaker 7: circle of life.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Oddly enough, I was talking to your good friend of mine,
- 24:32Speaker 3: Speedy Bevans, about that earlier this morning. We were talking
- 24:34Speaker 3: about in and I talk every morning, and he was
- 24:37Speaker 3: talking about that nineteen seventy seven inauguration of Jay Rockefeller,
- 24:41Speaker 3: and that winner itself was brutal on on its own, right, Rick,
- 24:46Speaker 3: before we let you go. Now, the big question is locally,
- 24:48Speaker 3: and I got texts about it, and I know it's
- 24:51Speaker 3: something that's out of your control, but I gotta throw
- 24:53Speaker 3: it out there. I'm an Optimum subscriber. As of now,
- 24:56Speaker 3: I cannot see Inside Wes, Virginia Politics or any of
- 24:59Speaker 3: the other WKTV programming. I missed your first show, missed
- 25:03Speaker 3: one of my favorite shows yesterday morning, the CBS Sunday
- 25:06Speaker 3: Morning Show. I missed two playoff games, all right. One
- 25:09Speaker 3: of those, you know it was streamed the Saturday game
- 25:12Speaker 3: the Texans, and the charges was over on Nickelodeon with
- 25:15Speaker 3: the color commentary done by the folks for whatever they
- 25:19Speaker 3: are from the SpongeBob SquarePants. I tried to watch that.
- 25:24Speaker 3: I don't smoke enough pot for that to make any
- 25:26Speaker 3: sense to me. So I know it's out of your hands,
- 25:30Speaker 3: but is there any is there? Are we getting anywhere
- 25:33Speaker 3: with this thing?
- 25:34Speaker 4: Man?
- 25:34Speaker 3: Because again I had a text says we can't see
- 25:36Speaker 3: Rick Johnson on TV thirteen. Optimum has all next to
- 25:39Speaker 3: our stations blocked. What can you tell us?
- 25:42Speaker 7: Well, I can't tell you anything officially, of course, Dave,
- 25:44Speaker 7: I have no clue as what's happening in other parts
- 25:47Speaker 7: of the company. With all of this, I would suggest
- 25:51Speaker 7: that people go to our website, wowktv dot com, and
- 25:57Speaker 7: at the very top of our web h is a
- 26:00Speaker 7: big red and white banner that will tell you exactly
- 26:03Speaker 7: what you need to know as a viewer and what
- 26:05Speaker 7: you can do to help in this situation. And that's
- 26:08Speaker 7: what I would say. Go to wwktv dot com and
- 26:12Speaker 7: it's very simple to do this. Just take a minute
- 26:15Speaker 7: or so to see what's going on and how you
- 26:18Speaker 7: can get involved as someone who is if you're not
- 26:21Speaker 7: seeing your favorite programs right now, thirteen.
- 26:23Speaker 3: All right, Rick Man, congratulations of a new gig. I'm
- 26:26Speaker 3: sure you'll knock it out of the park as you
- 26:27Speaker 3: have always done on everything. You're one of my heroes
- 26:29Speaker 3: in the business. I do appreciate you being here and
- 26:33Speaker 3: the best of luck with everything, and good luck with
- 26:35Speaker 3: everything today. I know everybody's doing a double and triple
- 26:38Speaker 3: time in the world of media here in Charleston to
- 26:39Speaker 3: cover the inauguration today. Thanks a lot, my friend, and
- 26:43Speaker 3: good luck and we'll talk soon day.
- 26:45Speaker 7: Thank you very much.
- 26:46Speaker 3: All right, Rick Johnson, the new host of Inside West
- 26:50Speaker 3: Virginia Politics. You have that optimum thing. I mean again, you.
- 26:53Speaker 4: Know, it's people.
- 26:55Speaker 3: They get upset about things I got and I don't
- 26:58Speaker 3: pretend to have it like Rick, pretend to have any
- 27:00Speaker 3: inside information. I mean, people blame the cable companies and
- 27:04Speaker 3: others are blaming the TV station and so on and
- 27:06Speaker 3: so forth, and so I don't know what the I mean.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Hopefully they'll get it worked out. These things pop up.
- 27:13Speaker 3: If you're a cable subscriber, you know, from time to time,
- 27:16Speaker 3: and not even just cable, I mean you see it
- 27:17Speaker 3: on the other services, either direct TV or Dish or whatever.
- 27:21Speaker 3: People say that you know they're so and so this
- 27:24Speaker 3: station's going to go away, and if they can't get
- 27:26Speaker 3: it worked out, well it's real deal this time. And
- 27:30Speaker 3: they lost a couple of NFL playoff games as I
- 27:33Speaker 3: mentioned the other shows that are on. So I am
- 27:35Speaker 3: in hopes that they will get it, but they'll get
- 27:38Speaker 3: it fixed soon. Twenty six minutes away from ten to

- 29:06Speaker 3: I definitely look up to Rick Johnson. I mean the
- 29:08Speaker 3: stuff that he did with this company and again to
- 29:13Speaker 3: have that career and have it all here in Charleston.
- 29:20Speaker 3: It's something I mean, it really really is, and he
- 29:23Speaker 3: was able to transition to learn a basically it's media, yeah,
- 29:27Speaker 3: but there's a lot of differences between radio, television, newspaper,
- 29:31Speaker 3: the different forms of media, and for him to transition
- 29:33Speaker 3: into something totally different. I didn't realize until we talked
- 29:37Speaker 3: that he had been there that long for twelve years
- 29:40Speaker 3: over WWK TV thirteen and he's just he's killed it, man.
- 29:45Speaker 3: And and I'm very happy for him because inside Westervirginia,
- 29:49Speaker 3: politics is a is a very pivotal show in the
- 29:53Speaker 3: news market here, not only in the Charleston market of course,
- 29:56Speaker 3: as he said, it airs across the state of airs

- 31:53Speaker 3: great thing I like about News Nation. It's none of those.

- 37:34Speaker 3: of course, is the inauguration of a new governor, Patrick Morrissey.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Former STATEGP chair Conrad Lucas serving as a contact person,
- 37:42Speaker 3: I guess for the incoming Morrissey administration, and he's quoted
- 37:46Speaker 3: Andy at the website of several quotes in there. Morrissey,
- 37:50Speaker 3: of course, av three term West Virginia Attorney general. It
- 37:53Speaker 3: is going to be a busy day for the governor elect,
- 37:56Speaker 3: and it's already underway now. He was sworn in at
- 37:59Speaker 3: midnight last night, so everything today is pretty much ceremonial.
- 38:05Speaker 3: As we speak, there is a celebration going on. This
- 38:10Speaker 3: is a faith based breakfast going on at the Culture Center.
- 38:12Speaker 3: The swearing in. The ceremonial swearing in is at eleven
- 38:16Speaker 3: o'clock this morning. Governor Morrissey will then give his speech,
- 38:19Speaker 3: followed by several receptions to be held around the capitol.
- 38:21Speaker 3: At around one thirty, There's going to be a parade
- 38:25Speaker 3: in Charleston around the east end of the Capitol complex.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Twenty two bands will take part in this parade, local
- 38:32Speaker 3: high schools, whatnot bands of both WVU and Marshall. If
- 38:37Speaker 3: I'm correct about this, I think it's the first time
- 38:39Speaker 3: since two thousand and nine that would been when Joe
- 38:43Speaker 3: Manchin was inaugurated as government, first time that we have
- 38:46Speaker 3: had a parade like this with an incoming governor. So
- 38:49Speaker 3: again that's going to happen today at one thirty. More
- 38:53Speaker 3: stuff going on at the Culture Center after the parade,
- 38:55Speaker 3: and then what's being called a Celebration of West Virginia
- 38:58Speaker 3: concert will be held at the iotle Seem Convention Center
- 39:01Speaker 3: featuring the Marshall Tucker Band and Shenandoah. And then at
- 39:04Speaker 3: seven o'clock tonight there's a cocktail reception at the Coliseum
- 39:07Speaker 3: that by invitation only. Then the inaugural ball will start
- 39:10Speaker 3: tonight at the Cottleseum at nine o'clock. It's one hundred
- 39:12Speaker 3: dollars a pop to get in to that. And if
- 39:18Speaker 3: you didn't catch the whole schedule, you can read it
- 39:21Speaker 3: for yourself. We have a wv metro news dot com well,
- 39:23Speaker 3: of course, have coverage starting as part of talk Line
- 39:25Speaker 3: with TJ. Meadows and Dave Wilson. That having been said,
- 39:29Speaker 3: Governor elect Morrissey is already there's already some I don't
- 39:33Speaker 3: say problems. That's not the probably the not correct terminology,
- 39:39Speaker 3: but there are some issues that are going to have
- 39:42Speaker 3: to be worked out. One of those is because you'll
- 39:46Speaker 3: recall State Senator Mark Khunt was elected as the new
- 39:49Speaker 3: state Auditor. That's no faul of Patrick Morrison's, by the way,
- 39:52Speaker 3: he was elected as new state Auditor, so his seat
- 39:55Speaker 3: in the state Senate is going to open up, as
- 39:57Speaker 3: well as the seat held by Eric Nelson, both of
- 40:00Speaker 3: those guys out of Kanaha County. Senator Nelson has been
- 40:03Speaker 3: named as the new Revenue Secretary. So now the Kanawh
- 40:07Speaker 3: County Republican Executive Committee will send some names to the
- 40:11Speaker 3: governor Governor Morrisey to choose from, and once that's once,
- 40:14Speaker 3: of course, we get through all of today's activities. Morgan
- 40:17Speaker 3: Pemberton has a story posted about at wv metronews dot com.
- 40:21Speaker 3: She actually did an interview with Kanawah County Republican and
- 40:24Speaker 3: Executive Committee chair Diana Graves, and she says, there's already
- 40:28Speaker 3: all sorts of interest in the seats, as you may imagine,
- 40:33Speaker 3: and here's where it kind of gets complicated, all right.
- 40:36Speaker 3: The two districts with the openings are the eighth and
- 40:39Speaker 3: the seventeenth. Now seventeenth takes in more than one county,
- 40:43Speaker 3: further adding to the fund here, so there'll be other
- 40:47Speaker 3: folks involved in this besides just Kanawha County, all right,
- 40:51Speaker 3: And as we've seen in the past. Executive Committee will
- 40:54Speaker 3: again send those names to the governor and he will choose.
- 40:57Speaker 3: And I am hearing, I am hearing there some very interesting,
- 41:01Speaker 3: well known names being thrown out there, very very interesting
- 41:05Speaker 3: to day. I won't get into rumor and gossip on
- 41:09Speaker 3: the show, but I'm hearing some pretty pretty well known
- 41:13Speaker 3: names are being flown being floated about to replace Mark

- 44:58Speaker 3: again we are going to start talk line off as
- 45:02Speaker 3: we normally do. Correct, but we are going to be
- 45:05Speaker 3: breaking in. I understand you. I'll let you explain it
- 45:08Speaker 3: because I think Jeff Jenkins and Brad mclheney are going
- 45:11Speaker 3: to be part of that from the capitol and then
- 45:13Speaker 3: we just kind of transition to those guys.
- 45:15Speaker 15: Is that what's going on? Yeah, that's what's going on.
- 45:16Speaker 15: So We'll start at ten six. We'll check in with
- 45:18Speaker 15: Brad and Jeff. They are getting set up at the
- 45:19Speaker 15: Capitol as we speak. Excuse me a bit of a
- 45:22Speaker 15: horse and throg of my throat rather, and then we're
- 45:25Speaker 15: going to transition to various guests who will talk a
- 45:29Speaker 15: little bit about Jim Justice and his administration, but also
- 45:32Speaker 15: look forward to Patrick Morrissey's administration. One I'm particularly eager
- 45:36Speaker 15: to talk to. We'll talk with Mike McKenna. He is
- 45:38Speaker 15: a DC Republican operative columnist for the Washington Times. He
- 45:43Speaker 15: knew Patrick Morrissey back before Patrick Morrissey was in politics,
- 45:46Speaker 15: when he was a staffer on the hill and a lobbyist.
- 45:49Speaker 15: And we'll talk with Mike about the early Morrissey days
- 45:52Speaker 15: and get some history there that's always fascinating. And then
- 45:54Speaker 15: coming up at eleven oh six, the inauguration starts at eleven.
- 45:57Speaker 15: Of course, you'll have multiple people trickling down the stage
- 46:00Speaker 15: to be inaugurated. Six Board of Public Works members to
- 46:03Speaker 15: be inaugurated today, plus justices from the Intermediate Court of
- 46:07Speaker 15: Appeals as well as the State Supreme Court. So Jeff
- 46:11Speaker 15: and Brad will anchor that from there with Dave and
- 46:13Speaker 15: I also chiming in. We'll talk to people in the crowd,
- 46:15Speaker 15: various officials that may come up, so comprehensive coverage starting
- 46:20Speaker 15: at eleven oh six inside talk line and then running
- 46:23Speaker 15: until the end. So Metro News will continue coverage at noon,
- 46:27Speaker 15: when you normally go off the year. There we'll have
- 46:29Speaker 15: coverage for our affiliates. I'm sure we'll be live here
- 46:31Speaker 15: on five eight WCCHS as well, and Jeff and Brad
- 46:34Speaker 15: will cover all things inauguration at the Capitol from A
- 46:36Speaker 15: to Z. You know, I think it's it's going to
- 46:39Speaker 15: be very interesting to see how everything plays out with
- 46:43Speaker 15: the Governor Morrissey because a couple of things here, TJ
- 46:46Speaker 15: and you can agree or disagree, but it's my show,
- 46:48Speaker 15: so I'll cut your microphone. So you know, Morrissey, I
- 46:52Speaker 15: think no one is going to to disagree that Morrisey's
- 46:55Speaker 15: going to be a whole lot more engaged than what
- 46:57Speaker 15: Governor Justice was. I mean, because Morrissey is a from
- 47:01Speaker 15: what I know of Patrick, he is a very hands
- 47:04Speaker 15: on kind of guy. You're not going to see that disconnect.
- 47:07Speaker 15: I don't think that you had.
- 47:09Speaker 3: And look, I'm not saying this to be critical of
- 47:11Speaker 3: Governor Justice. I'm just saying it is what it is.
- 47:13Speaker 3: You know, he had a great staff around him. I
- 47:15Speaker 3: think the world of Brian Abraham. Brian and I grew
- 47:18Speaker 3: up together. Great great guy, did a fantastic job there.
- 47:22Speaker 3: But physically speaking, you know, Jim Justice, wasn't there a lot,
- 47:27Speaker 3: you know. And I think you're going to see the
- 47:28Speaker 3: opposite with Patrick morris He. I think Patrick Morrissey is
- 47:31Speaker 3: going to be He's actually going to, what I understand,
- 47:33Speaker 3: live in the governor's mansion, as a constitution requires, So
- 47:36Speaker 3: he's actually going to be there. It's gonna be a
- 47:39Speaker 3: little bit more hands on. Morrissey is known and I
- 47:44Speaker 3: don't mean this. There's no way I can say this
- 47:46Speaker 3: without making it sound bad. He's known as being very headstrong,
- 47:49Speaker 3: very stubborn, which is not necessarily bad things in the
- 47:51Speaker 3: world of politics. I mean, not necessarily bad things. So
- 47:55Speaker 3: there could be some issues with him maybe getting along
- 47:58Speaker 3: with other maybe not. I mean, look, I want what's
- 48:00Speaker 3: best for West Virginia, you know, bottom line, and I
- 48:03Speaker 3: don't want strife and fighting. I want people to kind
- 48:06Speaker 3: of kind of get along. I will say this that
- 48:10Speaker 3: I am hearing now, and I said I don't engage
- 48:13Speaker 3: in gossip, but I'm going to do this time because
- 48:16Speaker 3: I've checked it out and I've got pretty reliable sources
- 48:20Speaker 3: unless your ships. For now, I'm hearing that Crescent Gallagher,
- 48:27Speaker 3: and that's a name that people have heard in the
- 48:30Speaker 3: past with Americans for Prosperity, was tapped and was announced
- 48:33Speaker 3: as being uh the incoming press secretary with Governor Morrissey.
- 48:38Speaker 3: I am being told by several people, and I have
- 48:40Speaker 3: reached out to Crescent myself. I have not talked to
- 48:43Speaker 3: him UH that he has decided to stay put with
- 48:45Speaker 3: Americans for Prosperity. And again I'll try to talk to
- 48:49Speaker 3: him about that, but I but I am hearing that
- 48:53Speaker 3: that he is not going to take the job, that
- 48:54Speaker 3: he's going to stay uh with Americas for Prosperity. And
- 48:59Speaker 3: I don't know that I would read too much into that.
- 49:01Speaker 3: I mean, people have taken jobs and then went back
- 49:04Speaker 3: and talked to their family or just reconsidered it on
- 49:06Speaker 3: their own said yeah, this isn't for me. I think
- 49:07Speaker 3: I'm going to change my mind. It happens the time,
- 49:08Speaker 3: it happens all the time, but there's just more of
- 49:10Speaker 3: a magnifying glass on a TJ when you're into public eye. Sure,
- 49:13Speaker 3: and I'm sure that will become more clear as we
- 49:17Speaker 3: move on. I've heard the same thing.
- 49:18Speaker 15: I haven't talked to to Crescent, but you know, things
- 49:21Speaker 15: happen to your points, It's not unusual that some of
- 49:24Speaker 15: these changes will happen. I will say this, here's what
- 49:27Speaker 15: I'm looking for today. When I talk to people in
- 49:31Speaker 15: the Justice Administration, I'm hearing that there may be a
- 49:35Speaker 15: difference of opinion in how the state has been left
- 49:38Speaker 15: fiscally and financially. If you talk to the Justice Administration,
- 49:42Speaker 15: you will hear that all is well, everything's good in
- 49:44Speaker 15: the hood, as the governor typically says, and they believe
- 49:48Speaker 15: that from a fiscal perspective too. When you listen to
- 49:51Speaker 15: Governor elect now Governor Morrissey after being sworn in last night,
- 49:55Speaker 15: you'll hear a little bit of a different tune in
- 49:57Speaker 15: terms of Okay, how do we pay for where the
- 50:00Speaker 15: tax cuts? And so there seems to be a distinction
- 50:03Speaker 15: there between the two camps. So today, as the governor speaks,
- 50:07Speaker 15: I'm going to be listening for him to talk about
- 50:09Speaker 15: because he campaigned on this. He campaigned on tax cuts
- 50:13Speaker 15: and moving more toward dissolving the income tax. So I'm
- 50:16Speaker 15: going to be listening this morning to see what he
- 50:19Speaker 15: says on that. I'm going to be listening for cues
- 50:21Speaker 15: in terms of what he thinks he's inheriting and what
- 50:24Speaker 15: he plans to do. West Virginia has a lot of problems.
- 50:27Speaker 15: We have a foster care crisis in the state. We
- 50:29Speaker 15: have a problem with childcare availability, keeping people from working
- 50:32Speaker 15: in the state. So I want to be listening for
- 50:34Speaker 15: all of those key type issues. Will he say anything
- 50:36Speaker 15: about peia, How will labor and the teachers respond to
- 50:40Speaker 15: what he says if he says anything at all. There's
- 50:42Speaker 15: a lot to hear this morning on the podium, and
- 50:44Speaker 15: I'm hoping he addresses some of these things. May not,
- 50:46Speaker 15: may be a speech where things are more general, and
- 50:49Speaker 15: then you start to hear policy initiatives come later as
- 50:52Speaker 15: we get closer to session.
- 50:53Speaker 3: But again, I remain curious as to what this governor
- 50:56Speaker 3: will do.
- 50:56Speaker 4: And how he will do it.
- 50:57Speaker 3: And it's interesting the way that it's playing out, because
- 51:00Speaker 3: you know, with this being the year when the new
- 51:03Speaker 3: governor comes in, basically all of this hoopla and all
- 51:06Speaker 3: of this stuff going on today and then nothing happens.
- 51:08Speaker 3: You know, I don't say nothing happens. I don't mean that,
- 51:10Speaker 3: but I mean, you know, the session doesn't start till
- 51:12Speaker 3: what February twelfth, is that right? So he's got about
- 51:14Speaker 3: a month or so to get in, to get to
- 51:17Speaker 3: kind of get settled in and that sort of thing.
- 51:20Speaker 3: And some of his staff members don't work out or
- 51:23Speaker 3: you know, they decide in the situation I mentioned earlier
- 51:27Speaker 3: that he didn't. They don't want to be involved in it.
- 51:31Speaker 3: He can go a different direction. Let me not got
- 51:33Speaker 3: a texture totally in related to politics. I was talking
- 51:35Speaker 3: about this sock drop that we'll be doing. You'll be
- 51:38Speaker 3: out there with us, by the way, on the twenty third,
- 51:40Speaker 3: just so you know I will, Yes, you'll be out there. Well,
- 51:42Speaker 3: I'll be collecting socks to be given to the through
- 51:45Speaker 3: Union mission on the twenty third. Appreciate a text or

- 51:51Speaker 3: the text high tech technology here TJ and send it
- 51:54Speaker 3: over to Rob Reel from her sister station KWS if
- 51:57Speaker 3: anyone's interested, says the TEXTRA eight is the outlet has
- 52:00Speaker 3: heated socks for five dollars. These run eight forty nine
- 52:04Speaker 3: online from Walmart. If anyone could get one or two packs,
- 52:07Speaker 3: day would be perfect for the sock drop. And that's
- 52:09Speaker 3: eight is the outlet in Saint albans I appreciate the
- 52:11Speaker 3: text of letting us know that. I just want to
- 52:13Speaker 3: quickly say I've had a long relationship with Union Mission.
- 52:15Speaker 3: My grandmother introduced me to them when I was very young,
- 52:18Speaker 3: six or seven years old. Fabulous organization that does so
- 52:21Speaker 3: much in the community, and they are so deserving of
- 52:23Speaker 3: all the help that we can give them. So yeah,
- 52:24Speaker 3: I'll be there on the twenty three. All right, appreciate it.
