- 1:18Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I am Chad Noman, Chief Content Officer of the Action Network.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I am joined as always by my BFF, my companion
- 1:29Speaker 1: Professional Better, Simon Hunter. Simon. We're gonna pick up right
- 1:37Speaker 1: where we left off, and we talked about this all
- 1:39Speaker 1: year long, and I think a lot of people would
- 1:41Speaker 1: be interested to hear your perspective on it. But NFL
- 1:44Speaker 1: is the hardest thing because it's a sport. Everybody is betting,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and in professional betting, a lot of guys they make
- 1:51Speaker 1: their money in the sports no one's paying attention to.
- 1:54Speaker 1: They're betting tennis, they're betting baseball, they're bett in college hoops,
- 1:57Speaker 1: they're betting w n b A. Why bet the NFL?
- 2:01Speaker 1: Why focus on that? Is a professional better? I get
- 2:06Speaker 1: paid the most, and that's not course. Football is king.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And if I want to get a hundred K down
- 2:11Speaker 1: on a football game on Sunday, no problem. If I
- 2:14Speaker 1: want to get a hundred K down an NBA game
- 2:16Speaker 1: on a Tuesday, almost impossible. It's like the NFL books
- 2:21Speaker 1: are so happy to take big money because they want
- 2:24Speaker 1: to balance the books, and what do pros do? We
- 2:27Speaker 1: bet the books so like professionals, that's the hardest sport.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Like they hate me. They don't want me in their betting.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So like with runners, that's why I love New Jersey
- 2:35Speaker 1: so much. It's like I can have a runner with
- 2:37Speaker 1: twenty online accounts. Biggest can't even compare. That's why I
- 2:40Speaker 1: like again, I don't want to shoot on pros to
- 2:41Speaker 1: live in Vegas. Plenty of the guys I worked was
- 2:43Speaker 1: still live there. They can't touch betting a New Jersey
- 2:47Speaker 1: is professional. It's like if you're a sports better, this
- 2:49Speaker 1: is heaven. There's so many sports books. They all want
- 2:52Speaker 1: your money, especially someone like me who just bets home dogs.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So if you're someone like me, that that's professionally and
- 2:58Speaker 1: you bet NFL, which it's the hardest sport, like Chad
- 3:01Speaker 1: is soluted to. It's it's very hard. College basketball, women's basketball,
- 3:07Speaker 1: that's money maker right there. Like pros. I know they
- 3:09Speaker 1: do want women's basketball, some of them at but they
- 3:13Speaker 1: can't get down more than a thousand, two thousands certain books,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and they get banned constantly. They're runners. They're just some nobody.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Some book. Some books won't take more than than that
- 3:22Speaker 1: because it's just like they don't want to have too
- 3:24Speaker 1: much exposure to women's basketball. Chad just talked about. I
- 3:27Speaker 1: asked Bob, how can I make the most money in this,
- 3:29Speaker 1: Like what's the best thing to do? Like what sport?
- 3:32Speaker 1: And he told me what's the easiest sports? He told
- 3:34Speaker 1: me what the hardest sports and which ones I can
- 3:36Speaker 1: make the most money from. He said, like NFL it's hard,
- 3:39Speaker 1: but when you get the right system, it's really easy,
- 3:43Speaker 1: Like once you figure it out and you kind of
- 3:45Speaker 1: get to kind of get it going. And again it
- 3:47Speaker 1: depends on every season because it's always changing. Football is
- 3:49Speaker 1: always evolving. But yeah, for me, it was definitely a
- 3:52Speaker 1: money thing where it's like I can get paid the
- 3:54Speaker 1: most from clients and it's the it's like the biggest sport.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Like if I have a hundred clients, ninety of them
- 4:02Speaker 1: that NFL, maybe three of them that cricket and the
- 4:05Speaker 1: cricket girls. She makes a ton of money betting, But
- 4:07Speaker 1: there just isn't the demand, you know what I mean.
- 4:09Speaker 1: There's just like people just don't have the same kind
- 4:11Speaker 1: of interest for those kind of things. We had a
- 4:13Speaker 1: lot of questions about Parlays. We would talk about money line,
- 4:16Speaker 1: Parlay's money Line Underdog Parlays in the show a lot.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I went back and did the math on my betting
- 4:24Speaker 1: throughout the year. And this is tying in a lot
- 4:27Speaker 1: of what we talked about earlier, because it's about getting
- 4:31Speaker 1: to know yourself as a better and what makes you
- 4:33Speaker 1: comfortable and getting back to basics as you talked about
- 4:37Speaker 1: after a couple of things like getting in your head.
- 4:40Speaker 1: If not for the money line Underdog Parlays, I kept
- 4:43Speaker 1: chasing like I would have made so much more money.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And so you know, tell people the folly and the
- 4:51Speaker 1: joy of Parlays. Good idea, bad idea. This is to
- 4:56Speaker 1: the most basic gambler. Yes, never be a parley for
- 5:01Speaker 1: the rest of your life. You won't listen though, because
- 5:04Speaker 1: parleys are fun, so there's no real point in me
- 5:06Speaker 1: going into it. But yeah, it's if you're if you're
- 5:09Speaker 1: betting a hundred on a game straight like football example,
- 5:12Speaker 1: you like doing them Patriots, you bet a hunding them straight.
- 5:15Speaker 1: That's great. If you want to do a parley with
- 5:16Speaker 1: the New England Patriots, the Jaguars and all these other
- 5:18Speaker 1: teams thrown together, don't do more than five ten bucks,
- 5:21Speaker 1: like you're just every team you add, your number goes
- 5:25Speaker 1: down so much of winning. So I do parleys a
- 5:28Speaker 1: lot of time. I would say for our money line
- 5:30Speaker 1: round robin thing we do with the underdogs, that's more.
- 5:32Speaker 1: That's safe. You're paying for these underdogs because if you
- 5:36Speaker 1: just go to for three, you're gonna get your money
- 5:38Speaker 1: back in a little more. If you go for for
- 5:40Speaker 1: one on those money one underdog part like Brown Robbins,
- 5:43Speaker 1: that's crazy money. So I always tell people not to
- 5:46Speaker 1: do parley's, but I do them too because they're fun.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I just do it for such small, small, small amounts.
- 5:52Speaker 1: If I do twenty, you know, sixteen game parlays every
- 5:56Speaker 1: season every Sunday, like I'll you know, if I go
- 6:00Speaker 1: to sports but ill full a card out and do
- 6:01Speaker 1: like a five dollar or whatever it is, you're not
- 6:03Speaker 1: been at to make money. So the hardest part of
- 6:06Speaker 1: my job is this is a free show. When you're
- 6:08Speaker 1: doing a free show, people are always going to listen
- 6:11Speaker 1: to this and be like, Okay, if I'm gonna do
- 6:12Speaker 1: my own thing, I'm gonna trust myself, which I am
- 6:14Speaker 1: completely supportive of. It's your own money. When people pay
- 6:17Speaker 1: for my picks like win or lose, they're gonna ride
- 6:19Speaker 1: with me, which is great because usually we're gonna win.
- 6:21Speaker 1: They're not gonna right of me one bad week and
- 6:24Speaker 1: then the next week take off because I lost the
- 6:26Speaker 1: last week, and then all of a sudden, I go
- 6:28Speaker 1: four now and they go, I want to bet with
- 6:29Speaker 1: him now. Then I go whatever, two and three and
- 6:31Speaker 1: they're like, well, I could have gone and three. So
- 6:33Speaker 1: that's that's the constant fight with this kind of job,
- 6:35Speaker 1: with doing a free show like this, where my clients
- 6:38Speaker 1: like they're just it's all good all the time, Like
- 6:40Speaker 1: even when I lose, they're just so supportive. They're just
- 6:43Speaker 1: such good people. So I definitely think it's different when
- 6:45Speaker 1: you're paying for fix, but it's it's just more like,
- 6:47Speaker 1: you know, people listen to this show and it's kind
- 6:50Speaker 1: of like a guy like, I'm not always gonna be
- 6:51Speaker 1: right like I wish I could be, but this is
- 6:54Speaker 1: a real show with real picks, Like if we can
- 6:56Speaker 1: go about fifty percent, that's that's that's what I'm hoping
- 6:59Speaker 1: for this show, because yeah, we take a lot of underdogs,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and that's that's the key to doing what we do
- 7:03Speaker 1: is take underdogs. Covington Masmadog. The rivalry will be renewed
- 7:09Speaker 1: this Saturday night in Vandals. Sports book is making things

- 9:04Speaker 1: mentioned this a few times. You have a client list
- 9:07Speaker 1: people paying for picks. People are asking on Twitter what
- 9:10Speaker 1: is it tout you talked about that one of the
- 9:13Speaker 1: guys you used to work with started selling picks outside
- 9:17Speaker 1: sort of the the guidelines that are established by your syndicate.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It's a very nuanced difference. Explain the difference between being
- 9:27Speaker 1: a tout and having a client list. Alright, So a
- 9:32Speaker 1: tow would be these people listening, like it would be
- 9:35Speaker 1: if you're on social media, any type of social media,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and you are giving someone your money for their picks
- 9:41Speaker 1: and return. Which again, I I know people hate touts
- 9:45Speaker 1: and are bad about them, but I'm a big believer
- 9:47Speaker 1: and if you're good at something, you never do it
- 9:49Speaker 1: for free. Now you have types which it don't matter
- 9:52Speaker 1: if you win or lose. You just selling the story
- 9:56Speaker 1: that you know, go NBA, but the nets playing against
- 9:58Speaker 1: the sixers and you know, bet the six years he'll
- 10:00Speaker 1: show whatever ticket wins. Okay, you you'll only pay them once.
- 10:04Speaker 1: But that's all he really cares about was getting that money.
- 10:06Speaker 1: So someone like me, it's a little different where you know,
- 10:09Speaker 1: I could easily sell picks with people online. People offer
- 10:12Speaker 1: me money constantly. I like being free, but I'm sure someday,
- 10:16Speaker 1: why am I putting in eighty hours of work just
- 10:19Speaker 1: to post free pick on the internet. It's like, I
- 10:23Speaker 1: I make so much more money betting than anything I
- 10:26Speaker 1: could make doing in media. Like I do love media,
- 10:29Speaker 1: but like, am I gonna make a million a year
- 10:31Speaker 1: doing talk shows? And it's that I have no idea
- 10:34Speaker 1: but probably not. But selling picks, dude, like I could
- 10:37Speaker 1: make probably a million bucks. I mean, you're give me
- 10:39Speaker 1: such a big platform now, you know, if I just
- 10:41Speaker 1: wanted to charge a couple of hundred a weekend, I
- 10:44Speaker 1: can make really good money. But I just don't want
- 10:45Speaker 1: to do that because I'm make enough sports betting as this,
- 10:49Speaker 1: and I'm already selling picks to a group of people.
- 10:51Speaker 1: So do I have any issue coming out here any times?
- 10:53Speaker 1: Do my biggest bets and things like that. No, because
- 10:55Speaker 1: I've already bet them. So it's like it's not like
- 10:58Speaker 1: I'm going against my group I give out bets. I
- 11:00Speaker 1: still giving out my bets to my clients first, but
- 11:03Speaker 1: then I come on and do it. But my advice
- 11:05Speaker 1: to people just don't pay for fix. There's so much
- 11:08Speaker 1: free information out there where if you're on these people
- 11:11Speaker 1: that you're gonna bet what you believe anyway, Like you're
- 11:13Speaker 1: that stubborn. You think you know what you're doing. Regardless,
- 11:16Speaker 1: listen all these free podcasts. Actual Network has like five
- 11:19Speaker 1: football shows. Like, there's so many different places that give
- 11:22Speaker 1: you better information. Finally, who you like and who you trust,
- 11:25Speaker 1: who you kind of disagree with, because the first step
- 11:29Speaker 1: that coming a good sports better is realizing you don't
- 11:31Speaker 1: know anything. I don't care if you watch football every
- 11:34Speaker 1: Sunday you know every player's name. It's irrelevant. It's truly
- 11:38Speaker 1: irrelevant to what we're doing because we're just betting numbers.
- 11:40Speaker 1: We're not really betting names and faces like that. So
- 11:43Speaker 1: I just want people to be where paying picks because
- 11:45Speaker 1: of things like that. This relates to two things that
- 11:48Speaker 1: I wanted to talk about our final two topics for
- 11:51Speaker 1: part two of our podcast about answering your questions and
- 11:56Speaker 1: sort of pulling back the curtain a little bit on
- 11:57Speaker 1: the business. The first part is a lot people ask
- 12:01Speaker 1: what books should you read? And I think it relates
- 12:05Speaker 1: to you sort of talking about information. And the second
- 12:07Speaker 1: part is what habits are good and bad. I like
- 12:12Speaker 1: talking about the books because the books, I think lead
- 12:14Speaker 1: to how you think about it, how I think about it.
- 12:17Speaker 1: So if you have thoughts on and you mentioned sort
- 12:20Speaker 1: of listening to podcasts. It can be podcasts to the
- 12:23Speaker 1: material that you look at to help you informed decision
- 12:26Speaker 1: making and become a better analyst of risk, like I don't. Again,
- 12:30Speaker 1: it's not that I don't care about other people's opinions.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I just usually don't listen to anyone else's opinions during
- 12:35Speaker 1: football season because I don't want anything to screw with
- 12:37Speaker 1: my head, Like I already have enough pros calling me
- 12:40Speaker 1: giving me their crazy ass opinions and other ship they
- 12:42Speaker 1: want to talk about. Like there's some Betty shows that like,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I used to try to listen to some, but I
- 12:46Speaker 1: just didn't do it because it was just irked me
- 12:48Speaker 1: so much where it's like these guys are just talking
- 12:51Speaker 1: out there. So for books, I have a weird approach
- 12:55Speaker 1: to it where it's like, honestly, I've read a lot
- 12:57Speaker 1: of history books. I'm into like War two stuff, and
- 13:00Speaker 1: a lot of Navy steal books like about discipline, because
- 13:02Speaker 1: I think that's like, more than anything else, if it's
- 13:04Speaker 1: the most important thing to sports swetting is to discipline.
- 13:07Speaker 1: It's a very emotional thing. Like I have a system
- 13:11Speaker 1: and the I tried to go against him me and Chad,
- 13:13Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about the rest of my life. Unfortunately,
- 13:15Speaker 1: with the Kansas City Chiefs to go against the Bengals,
- 13:17Speaker 1: and it was like, not that I got two emotional,
- 13:19Speaker 1: but I definitely let it get the best of me
- 13:21Speaker 1: where it's like I should have just trusted my number,
- 13:22Speaker 1: trusting my system, taking a good number at seven and
- 13:25Speaker 1: a half of the Bangals, but I was just like, no,
- 13:28Speaker 1: like they're the most overhyped, old rated team that since
- 13:30Speaker 1: he's gonna roll, so I would definitely say I've learned
- 13:34Speaker 1: from all these different books. It's like, if you're gonna
- 13:36Speaker 1: read read books, Chad's gonna give you some good gambling stuff. Here.
- 13:39Speaker 1: To me, it's a lot of mental stuff, so I
- 13:41Speaker 1: don't want to get too weird, like are the War.
- 13:43Speaker 1: There's a bunch of different old school books you can
- 13:45Speaker 1: read that it's just good for your mental habits. That's
- 13:48Speaker 1: just as important as good good gambling information. Well, it's
- 13:51Speaker 1: interesting because I was gonna say the same thing, and
- 13:54Speaker 1: you and I didn't discuss this before we started the podcast.
- 13:56Speaker 1: But I don't read a lot of gambling books. You
- 13:59Speaker 1: know they are, there are good ones out there. There's
- 14:03Speaker 1: like the Logic of sports betting right by a guy
- 14:05Speaker 1: named Ed Miller. Really good sports betting book. There's a
- 14:10Speaker 1: great old book by Larry Merchant, who a lot of
- 14:13Speaker 1: older people will remember as the boxing analysts for HBO
- 14:16Speaker 1: for years. He did a book called The National Football Lottery,
- 14:20Speaker 1: which is as relevant today as it was when he
- 14:22Speaker 1: wrote it. In the nineteen seventy two he took thirty
- 14:25Speaker 1: dollars of in advance and spent the football season betting
- 14:28Speaker 1: to see how well he could do with it. But
- 14:32Speaker 1: I like the books I read are tangential to betting,
- 14:38Speaker 1: and they are about how people process decision making and
- 14:42Speaker 1: analyze risk. So the book Thinking Fast and Slow by
- 14:48Speaker 1: Daniel Kaneman is a book that I read. The Undoing
- 14:53Speaker 1: Project by Michael Lewis, which was about Kaneman and his
- 14:58Speaker 1: partner in education in economic theory, uh and sort of
- 15:02Speaker 1: their relationship, is a book that I read and liked
- 15:06Speaker 1: a lot. It's it's you know, even Moneyball by Michael
- 15:09Speaker 1: Lewis sort of makes you think about decision making in
- 15:13Speaker 1: an entirely different way. Hey, Chad, it's Matt Mitchell jumping
- 15:16Speaker 1: in really quick. I did ask around at Action Network
- 15:20Speaker 1: to see if anybody there had book recommendations. I do
- 15:23Speaker 1: know a lot of the people that asked this question
- 15:26Speaker 1: also wanted baseball books for the summer that related to betting,
- 15:31Speaker 1: and the four recommendations I received internally were Scorecasting by
- 15:36Speaker 1: Tobias Moscowitz, Trading Basis by Joe Peter, The Only Rule
- 15:41Speaker 1: It Has to Work by Ben Lindberg and Sam Miller,
- 15:44Speaker 1: and also Fooled by Randomness by see Nicholas Talb. There's
- 15:50Speaker 1: actual great book. I can't remember who wrote it. I'm
- 15:52Speaker 1: going to look it up what we're talking, but there's
- 15:54Speaker 1: a book called Traffic. It's all about um, how we
- 16:00Speaker 1: drive and how it leads to different how it reveals
- 16:04Speaker 1: different kind of decision making, and a lot is by
- 16:06Speaker 1: Tom Vanderbilt. A lot of it ends up being about
- 16:09Speaker 1: pack decision making and following the crowds, and traffic is
- 16:13Speaker 1: the most literal interpretation of that right. The reason why
- 16:16Speaker 1: traffic gens end up happening oftentimes on highways is because
- 16:20Speaker 1: people start merging too early and they don't use the
- 16:23Speaker 1: entirety of the road that is available, So you get antsy.
- 16:26Speaker 1: You merge as soon as you get sort of onto
- 16:28Speaker 1: the on ramp instead of going to the very end
- 16:31Speaker 1: where you get to keep the traffic flowing for as
- 16:34Speaker 1: long as possible, and then these traffic jams start. Right. So,
- 16:37Speaker 1: the idea of understanding how people make group decisions and
- 16:41Speaker 1: then trying to find a way to think differently about
- 16:44Speaker 1: that is as helpful for making for for sort of
- 16:47Speaker 1: developing good habits about betting as it is just reading
- 16:51Speaker 1: hey bet this? Uh that Actually I find to be
- 16:55Speaker 1: a lot less helpful when trying to exist in this
- 16:58Speaker 1: space and make good decisions in the space, which at
- 17:01Speaker 1: least a one final thing simon, what are your good habits?
- 17:06Speaker 1: What are your bad habits? Oh? Man, I would say obsession,
- 17:12Speaker 1: Like if you're obsessed with what you do and you
- 17:14Speaker 1: love it, I feel like, again you always have to
- 17:17Speaker 1: take time off, like like your boy right now, But
- 17:20Speaker 1: like when you're committed to something, you go all in
- 17:22Speaker 1: and you take time for loved ones everything like that.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But it's like that habit of being obsessed with things Again,
- 17:28Speaker 1: it could be it can be bad, like you can
- 17:29Speaker 1: let your life get out of control. Sometimes you have
- 17:31Speaker 1: to keep it, keep it a little contained. But it's like,
- 17:34Speaker 1: you know, we all have purpose and readers in life
- 17:38Speaker 1: and who knows the real purpose while we're here. But
- 17:39Speaker 1: it's like once I started getting into the lab quote unquote,
- 17:43Speaker 1: like really get into the numbers, and once my my
- 17:46Speaker 1: my model started working out, it's like I'm I just
- 17:48Speaker 1: started feeling like that feeling I'm exactly where I'm supposed
- 17:50Speaker 1: to be, Like I didn't feel like I was doing work,
- 17:52Speaker 1: even I was working eight hours eight hours a week.
- 17:55Speaker 1: It felt like I was having fun. And my biggest
- 17:58Speaker 1: habit during the season is Chad knows I'm always checking lines.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I'll wake up at the middle of the middle of
- 18:03Speaker 1: the night just roll over and just scroll through different
- 18:06Speaker 1: books and lines and just see what movement, what's happening,
- 18:09Speaker 1: checking messages, And it's like a good habit to me.
- 18:13Speaker 1: People would be not just to be positive about everything,
- 18:17Speaker 1: but it honestly helps me so much of what I
- 18:20Speaker 1: do with my job. Where it's like the Chad talked
- 18:22Speaker 1: a little bit about my worst bets, like I can't lie,
- 18:24Speaker 1: Like those are miserable dark days, like you lose a
- 18:27Speaker 1: ton of your own money and you're losing other people's
- 18:29Speaker 1: money that have been trusted you with a device, like
- 18:33Speaker 1: it would be like me telling you buy a big
- 18:34Speaker 1: time stock and a stock going to zero, it's like
- 18:36Speaker 1: the worst feeling in the world. I've just lost people
- 18:38Speaker 1: who's really harder and money. There's a lot of habits
- 18:41Speaker 1: in life, and I think that's a great thing about sports,
- 18:43Speaker 1: being a lot of it goes together. Half the people
- 18:45Speaker 1: that listen to this are gonna be forever chasing and
- 18:47Speaker 1: like that depresses the hell out of it makes me
- 18:49Speaker 1: super sad, But that's just it. They're either there are
- 18:52Speaker 1: a psychopath or they're just stubborn, and it's like, no
- 18:55Speaker 1: matter what, they're gonna keep doing what they do. You know,
- 18:57Speaker 1: if you know that we've had good years, we've had
- 18:59Speaker 1: good layup fronts, it's like they don't matter. They're always
- 19:01Speaker 1: just like, ah, this guy's a phony, nada da data.
- 19:04Speaker 1: It's that's that's probably the toughest thing where it's like
- 19:06Speaker 1: you gotta break habits to make that happen. So for
- 19:08Speaker 1: bad habits, I mean a lot of there's a lot
- 19:10Speaker 1: of obviously a lot of bad habs first betting, but
- 19:12Speaker 1: the worst one obviously is chasing. Like again, I've gone
- 19:16Speaker 1: I've gone to zero a bunch of times in my life.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You don't dwell on it. It's like you just you
- 19:21Speaker 1: just learned from it and then try to try to
- 19:24Speaker 1: change from that. It's like, stop putting a Harvard stunt
- 19:27Speaker 1: of your bank go into these bets. Like that's something
- 19:28Speaker 1: I had to learn early on because they'd be like,
- 19:30Speaker 1: say I was at ten K and all of a
- 19:32Speaker 1: sudden that five K because I had had ten bad
- 19:35Speaker 1: bets and I lost five K. I would just take
- 19:37Speaker 1: off five K and put it on one game and
- 19:38Speaker 1: be like, now I'm gonna double my money on this.
- 19:40Speaker 1: It don't work like that. It's just so hard to
- 19:42Speaker 1: do those kind of things. So, yeah, definitely bad habits.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Number one for me is people step chasing. Like, I
- 19:49Speaker 1: know you're sitting there right now, listen to this. Please
- 19:52Speaker 1: turn the page, start over. That money's gone. Stop chasing. Yeah, Chasing,
- 19:58Speaker 1: to me is the single worst thing you can do
- 20:05Speaker 1: as a better I mentioned earlier that Chargers Chiefs game.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I was totally chasing. I was aunty, I was upset
- 20:14Speaker 1: all those bad habits. It had been a bad weekend.
- 20:18Speaker 1: You're frustrated because you feel like you're doing good math,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you're doing the right things, and they're not going your way.
- 20:26Speaker 1: There are moments where after a betting weekend where it's
- 20:30Speaker 1: a Monday or Tuesday, and I'm still thinking about it
- 20:32Speaker 1: if it's gone bad, and I think to myself, be
- 20:34Speaker 1: a fucking professional, Like, obviously I'm not a professional better,
- 20:38Speaker 1: but I've been doing it long enough to know that
- 20:41Speaker 1: I'm not the guy who is betting more than I
- 20:43Speaker 1: can afford, which is the second thing, and being I'm
- 20:48Speaker 1: not the guy who can't shake it off and it
- 20:52Speaker 1: feels like I have to chase to make my money back.
- 20:54Speaker 1: If you're doing this, We've talked about this so many times.
- 20:57Speaker 1: If you're doing this, hopefully you're listening to this podcast,
- 21:00Speaker 1: it's because you're doing it for the enjoyment and to
- 21:02Speaker 1: do it for a long period of time. It's not
- 21:04Speaker 1: because you think you're gonna get rich, right, And I
- 21:08Speaker 1: say this to my kids all the time, because we'll
- 21:09Speaker 1: talk about betting, and it's a scary thing to talk
- 21:11Speaker 1: about betting with your kids. I remind them their college
- 21:15Speaker 1: funds aren't at risk. That we're not at risk of
- 21:19Speaker 1: not having food on the table, We're not at risk
- 21:20Speaker 1: of not being able to pay for the house. Like
- 21:23Speaker 1: we're doing it because we like the enjoyment. We're gonna
- 21:26Speaker 1: make smart decisions and if we lose a weekend, it's okay.
- 21:30Speaker 1: It's only pride. Like that's it right. Where where you
- 21:33Speaker 1: get in trouble is when you chase, when you overbet,
- 21:36Speaker 1: you try to make it back all at once. Like
- 21:39Speaker 1: you never hear anyone out of Action network talking about
- 21:42Speaker 1: trying to make it back all at once. These are
- 21:44Speaker 1: people who've been doing it for years. They bet a
- 21:46Speaker 1: very specific part of their bank roll. They know what
- 21:48Speaker 1: they're doing. Those are the lessons you take away. I
- 21:52Speaker 1: would say, those are the bad habits the good habit.
- 21:56Speaker 1: The one thing I would add is you have to
- 21:59Speaker 1: doing of work. Put enough work in, whether it's the
- 22:02Speaker 1: obsessive level that Simon is at or sort of the
- 22:05Speaker 1: daily level that I'm at, to understand what you're comfortable betting.
- 22:10Speaker 1: And I don't mean the money. I mean everyone is
- 22:13Speaker 1: good at something right. Everyone feels like athletically, oh you've
- 22:18Speaker 1: really good aim, or you've always been good at shooting
- 22:20Speaker 1: a basketball, or you can throw a great spiral, or
- 22:23Speaker 1: you've got great hand eye coordination, or you can put
- 22:25Speaker 1: whatever it is, the same thing and betting, there's certain
- 22:28Speaker 1: markets that you're gonna be more comfortable betting it, and
- 22:30Speaker 1: it takes you time to figure out how your mind thinks,
- 22:33Speaker 1: what your analysis tells you, so you truly understand what
- 22:37Speaker 1: you should be betting and where you're going to be comfortable.
- 22:40Speaker 1: And then, like when you should be tailing someone because
- 22:44Speaker 1: you feel like they're smart and you've got a little
- 22:45Speaker 1: bit on the side that you're comfortable betting, you should
- 22:47Speaker 1: with the majority of your money and make the majority
- 22:49Speaker 1: of your bets in the markets where you feel like
- 22:53Speaker 1: you've unlocked an advantage in some way. We talked about
- 22:56Speaker 1: all the time. Simon and I love home underdogs. We
- 22:59Speaker 1: love betting against the public. We love seeing how numbers
- 23:03Speaker 1: have moved and trying to tie our success into that um.
- 23:08Speaker 1: And then you can narrow down the teams that you
- 23:10Speaker 1: like based on those core principles. But you gotta find
- 23:14Speaker 1: your principles well, said Simon. We've done a lengthy interview.
- 23:21Speaker 1: We have broken it up into two parts. We have
- 23:24Speaker 1: told your origin story, the creation myth. We have gone
- 23:28Speaker 1: through how to become a professional better. We have gone
- 23:31Speaker 1: through touts, we have gone through habits. We have gone
- 23:34Speaker 1: through books you can read. You name it, we covered it,
- 23:38Speaker 1: and if we didn't, we got a long time till
- 23:40Speaker 1: football starts, so we can get back to it, we
- 23:43Speaker 1: can answer even more questions. For now, this has been
- 23:47Speaker 1: the Favorites podcast from the Volume Podcast Network for producer
- 23:52Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell, for professional better Simon Hunter, I am Chad Melman.
