- 0:00Hey guys, we have something unique for this week on the podcast.
- 0:03My 17-year-old daughter Kyra just got back from a speech tournament,
- 0:08the National Speech Tournament in Minneapolis,
- 0:11where her speech was 10th in the nation.
- 0:14She talked about lots of themes you guys are going to be familiar with,
- 0:16but wow, she just nails the idea of family as a team
- 0:19and the number one tool that will transform your family
- 0:22from a group of individuals into a team.
- 0:24So definitely listen to this one.
- 0:26Love for you guys to share this one around.
- 0:28Enjoy this.
- 0:28This is Kyra Pryor on the one tool that will transform your family forever.
- 0:33Ladies and gentlemen, the United States has just become number one.
- 0:38And what, you might ask?
- 0:39Well, we just passed Sweden in becoming the number one country in the world in single-parent homes.
- 0:47Our share is more than three times the global average.
- 0:50Not great, right?
- 0:51Well, this proves that whatever is happening to destroy the family is most advanced right here in our country.
- 0:59But I also have some good news.
- 1:00In this talk, I'll be laying out four points.
- 1:03First, I will
- 1:04reveal the hidden cause for the breakdown of the modern Western family.
- 1:08Second, you will learn the
- 1:09ancient tool that can heal the family.
- 1:11Third, I'll tell you how this tool has transformed my life.
- 1:15And finally, I'll give you a couple of steps to get you started in mastering this tool to
- 1:19transform your family.
- 1:21But first, allow me to introduce myself.
- 1:24My name is Kyra Pryor.
- 1:26I'm a
- 1:2617-year-old girl, and I grew up in a strange family.
- 1:30Now, you might be wondering, what could
- 1:31a teenage girl teach me about family?
- 1:34I mean, we all grew up in one, so we all kind of consider
- 1:36ourselves experts on how it works, but what if most of us were wrong?
- 1:41So what is wrong?
- 1:42What is
- 1:43the truth, and how can we fix what has been broken?
- 1:46These are all questions that my family has been
- 1:48trying to answer since before I was born, and after years and years of research, travel, trial,
- 1:54and error in studying the scriptures, the results of our efforts have finally begun to show
- 1:59that nothing shapes the family more than the table.
- 2:03So let's get into my first point.
- 2:05I will
- 2:06reveal the hidden cause for the breakdown of the modern western family summarized in three words,
- 2:11nuclear, nest, and narcissistic.
- 2:15For thousands of years we've existed in multi-generational homes,
- 2:18but we've replaced the multi-generational family with smaller fragile nuclear families.
- 2:24Now, the nuclear family is still important,
- 2:25but it was intended to be embedded inside these larger, stronger, multi-generational families.
- 2:30And this kind of multi-generational family used to function as a team
- 2:34who worked and worshipped together.
- 2:37But instead of building our families as teams, we've begun to build nests.
- 2:41Now, the nest is designed to self-destruct and start over every single generation,
- 2:47just like the name implies.
- 2:49Like a bird.
- 2:50And this has given rise to our third N.
- 2:53narcissism.
- 2:54The modern family is designed around the individual.
- 2:58The goal of the modern family is
- 3:00not to sacrifice for the team, but to launch the individual.
- 3:05I mean, think about it.
- 3:06A good family
- 3:07today means that you're a good springboard for individual success.
- 3:11But what if instead,
- 3:13everyone in your family was working towards one big, meaningful goal instead of hyper-focusing
- 3:18on this individual success.
- 3:21So what can a mom or dad do who wants to transform their fragile nuclear
- 3:25narcissistic nest into a multi-generational team on mission?
- 3:30The answer is found in my second point.
- 3:32There is a simple tool that does this.
- 3:34A single tradition that can forever transform the kind of
- 3:37family that you are building.
- 3:40And that is three generations around one table every week.
- 3:46Any family
- 3:46who implements this tradition will turn into a multi-generational family and begin to function
- 3:51more like a team than a group of individuals.
- 3:54And that team will seek out a mission.
- 3:57So my question for you is, how do I know?
- 4:00That's more of a question for myself, but how do I know?
- 4:04This credibility really matters in these kinds of speeches.
- 4:07How am I credible in this stance?
- 4:09Well, it's because I've seen it hundreds and hundreds of times with my own eyes.
- 4:15You see,
- 4:16I grew up in a strange family.
- 4:17My parents met in Jerusalem and they couldn't believe how
- 4:20consistently interconnected family dynamics were there.
- 4:24So years later, my entire family of seven
- 4:26returns to live in Israel.
- 4:28We were kind of like cultural archaeologists trying to understand why
- 4:31the Jewish and Arabic cultures created such strong families.
- 4:36In fact, Israel is the only
- 4:38developed country in the entire world that has maintained fertility above replacement rate.
- 4:44And years later, we finally found out why.
- 4:46And the answer is simple.
- 4:48Three generations around one table every week.
- 4:53The tradition that Jewish families call the Shabbat dinner is what makes their family dynamics different from ours.
- 5:00I remember when we lived in Jerusalem.
- 5:02Every Friday evening, you would see young families scurrying off to their parents' houses to experience the meal that began their day of rest together.
- 5:10and as the sun set, a quiet would settle over the whole city, so complete that if you listened
- 5:16closely, all you could hear was the sound of fathers chanting blessings over their wives
- 5:22and children.
- 5:24It was truly beautiful.
- 5:26So for as long as I can remember, my family has implemented
- 5:29this tradition and the older I've gotten, the more I've realized how essential it is to maintaining
- 5:33our dynamic as a multi-generational team on mission.
- 5:38This leads me to my third point.
- 5:39What has this tool done in my life?
- 5:41Well, for one, I feel like I actually know my grandparents.
- 5:45You know how some old people are always trying to tell stories
- 5:48or just share experiences that they've had whenever they get the chance?
- 5:52Well, this tool gives my grandparents an outlet to tell these stories
- 5:55and to pass them on.
- 5:57And now our table has reached the fourth generation
- 6:00with my siblings' children.
- 6:02So every time we gather around this table,
- 6:05meaning overflows the room.
- 6:08And I, as a teenage girl in this day and age, I feel like I'm actually a part of something big.
- 6:14Something that I didn't have to search the world to find, but that God has built right around me where I already am.
- 6:21But sadly, most teenagers don't get that experience.
- 6:25Did you know that researchers and statistics all agree that teenage well-being and the table are insanely interconnected?
- 6:34According to some research done by Casa Columbia,
- 6:38teenagers with less than three family meals per week
- 6:40are much more likely to engage in substance abuse.
- 6:44Along with that,
- 6:45did you know that almost eight out of every 10 teenagers
- 6:48experiences some kind of identity crisis?
- 6:51These things are awful.
- 6:53Our teenagers are sick.
- 6:55But thank God,
- 6:56these are all things I have never had to experience
- 6:59because I know my identity.
- 7:01I know who I am, and I know where I came from.
- 7:05Do you know all eight names of all eight of your great-grandparents?
- 7:09Statistically speaking, you probably don't, because only 4% of the population does.
- 7:14The only reason I know their names is because of conversations with my grandparents around this weekly table.
- 7:22So what?
- 7:23all these shockingly tragic facts, they show the very strong link between teenage well-being,
- 7:30individual well-being, and the table.
- 7:33So what?
- 7:34How do we begin healing our teenagers and teaching
- 7:37our children their identities?
- 7:39We master this tradition.
- 7:42I'll give you a couple of steps to
- 7:43get you started in my fourth point.
- 7:45First, pick a time to establish your multi-generational family
- 7:49meal every week.
- 7:50But if you don't have three generations nearby, catch this, this is very
- 7:54important, if you don't have three generations nearby, or if you don't have a healthy relationship
- 7:59with upstream generations, that's okay.
- 8:02Just start with two.
- 8:04You and your kids.
- 8:06But make it the kind
- 8:07of meal that your kids can't wait to bring their children, that is your grandchildren, to.
- 8:13Next,
- 8:13make it fun.
- 8:14I remember growing up, our weekly meal was the one time I was allowed to drink
- 8:18sparkling grape juice, and me and my sisters always loved dressing up for the occasion.
- 8:23Next, make it sustainable.
- 8:24Pick the time, food, meal that is most sustainable for you and your
- 8:28family.
- 8:29For some families, that's a Sunday afternoon.
- 8:31For others, it's a weekday evening,
- 8:32but set it apart as sacred and different from the rest.
- 8:36And finally, probably the most important one,
- 8:39make it meaningful.
- 8:41Bless the sons and the daughters.
- 8:43Tell family stories.
- 8:44Play a family
- 8:45game afterwards.
- 8:46Give yourselves time to develop this tradition according to your unique family
- 8:50dynamic.
- 8:51This meal is your canvas for crafting what makes your family special.
- 8:55But I can tell
- 8:56you this, as soon as you have it, as soon as you've established three generations around one table
- 9:02every week, you will begin to see your family transform before your eyes.
- 9:07Your family will go
- 9:08multi-generational and begin to function more like this team instead of a group of individuals.
- 9:14and that team will seek out a mission,
- 9:17therefore maximizing you and your family's impact
- 9:20on the kingdom and the world at large.
- 9:24Nothing shapes the family more than the table.
- 9:28Remember, the gospel story began around a table
- 9:32at the Last Supper.
- 9:33Our identities are transformed around the communion table
- 9:37and we look forward to a beautiful future around a table
- 9:40with our Heavenly Father at the wedding supper of the Lamb.
- 9:43So my hope for you and your family is that you would be able to experience peak family life,
- 9:49as described by the psalmist when he said,
- 9:52Thank you.
