Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the Imperfect Impulse with Brie O'Connor.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Brie O'Connor.
- 0:08We are going to take a little left turn at Albuquerque here and
- 0:14get a little more
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: personal with our exercises this week.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: We're going to talk about getting started.
- 0:23Now,
- 0:24regardless of your artistic practice,
- 0:26I think we all have these ideas about
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: what sort of environment we need to work.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: The dishes need to be done,
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: or the to-do list needs to be conquered,
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: or I have to have total quiet and there's so many people at home,
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: or I don't have a perfect workspace,
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: or I need to leave the house in order to do it,
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: or I don't have the perfect tools.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: There are million and one reasons why we don't get started.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Sometimes those are legit,
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: like if you are into ceramics,
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: but you don't have a kiln or even clay to work with at home that is,
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: properly refined and all of that.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: That's going to be a legitimate obstacle for you.
- 1:25And it may seem insurmountable to go find facilities in which
- 1:31you can do that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: But...
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: When there is a will, there is a way.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: You don't necessarily have to sit there.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: And in the acting world, we call this playing the obstacle.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, God, I'm going to take a little sidetrack here.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: So for the non-actors out there,
- 1:55there is a very wise saying in the acting world that you can't
- 2:03play a negative.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: You can't play I am not something.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: If you are playing Little Orphan Annie,
- 2:14if you spend all your time thinking about all the things Little
- 2:19Orphan Annie is not,
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: she's not old,
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: she's not scared,
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: she's not
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Quiet.
- 2:33You'll spend a whole time focusing on this whole world of
- 2:37things that she is not,
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: but you're not drilling in on what she is.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: That makes it really unplayable as an actor.
- 2:48And you'll find that in your regular life that if you are
- 2:52playing the obstacle,
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: you will find yourself frozen every time.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Because if everywhere you turn there is a negative,
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: how are you going to find out what you are actually doing?
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: So as an actor looks at a piece of text and they might say,
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: okay,
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: I think I'm angry on this line.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: It's hard to play angry,
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: but you can think about,
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: I want to shake this person into reality,
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: or I want to
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: I want to violate them with my words.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: I want to explode my frustrations so that they feel them.
- 3:45Whatever that is,
- 3:47those are all off the top of my head and aren't particularly eloquent.
- 3:51But the point is that you have to find something that you can
- 3:56actually do in order
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: to move forward.
- 4:01So part of the thing that stops us from getting started is that
- 4:07we are mired in a
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: negative language.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: We are mired in the nots,
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: the things I don't have,
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: the things that I can't do,
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: instead of focusing on what is actually within your grasp.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: I'm going to put my glasses back on so I can see my notes here.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Hold on a second.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: So we'll say things like, I don't have enough time.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: I need hours to work.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Well, okay, that might be true.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: But what if you could dedicate 15,
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: 20 minutes a day to meditating on how you might want to proceed?
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: or planning for a creative project,
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: or outlining,
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: jotting down free-form ideas,
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: doodling,
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 5:01all kinds of things that you can do in a short period of time
- 5:05that will focus your
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: mind on the task that you want to accomplish.
- 5:11And if you can dedicate 15 minutes a day,
- 5:15you'll find that suddenly time opens up for you.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: So I like 15 minutes feels like a manageable increment of time.
- 5:27And the more you train yourself to handle that 15 minutes in a
- 5:31focused way,
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: the more things will become available to you.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: I promise you it's like magic.
- 5:41Now the other thought that we often have is,
- 5:44you know what,
- 5:44the vibe is off.
- 5:46The room is too bright or it's too noisy or there's too many
- 5:50kids running around I
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: can't focus I can't you know,
- 5:54there's all those Those noisy things that that we can't seem to
- 5:59get past Well,
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: then you can start to think about what can I do?
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Can I?
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Go work at a cafe Can I go to the library?
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Can I
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Put on noise-canceling headphones.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Do I want to work at like 5 a.m.?
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: You know, take your 15 minutes at 5 a.m.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: with a cup of coffee.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Anything to just give yourself time.
- 6:29Also,
- 6:30another thing that stops us from starting is this idea of
- 6:36finished product.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: That,
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: oh,
- 6:39that feels like too big of a project and I can't wrap my mind
- 6:44around the steps,
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: so I'm not even going to get started because I couldn't possibly.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: That's where you have to break things down and think, okay,
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: If you can just sit down and plan,
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: and that planning period may take several weeks,
- 7:05may take years where you sit down for 15 minutes a day and
- 7:09enjoy the visualization
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: of the project.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: When you're ready and you make space for it,
- 7:19it's amazing how that little wedge of time kind of cracks
- 7:24things open for you.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Now the to-do list,
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: all of the things that we have to do for other people,
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: this is definitely a mom artist trap.
- 7:37I've got to feed the kids,
- 7:40get them from school,
- 7:43take them to piano lessons.
- 7:46I've got to organize a play date,
- 7:47blah,
- 7:48blah,
- 7:48blah,
- 7:48blah,
- 7:48blah,
- 7:48blah,
- 7:48blah,
- 7:48blah.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: All of those things, they are true.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Those are real obligations.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: So I want to validate that for you.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Those are real obligations.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: However, can you imagine a world
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: where you can couple those obligations with opportunity.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: So you need to organize a playdate.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 8:15Can you organize a regular trade where you drop your kid off at
- 8:22the friend's house
- 8:23and then you have a little bit of time to focus on yourself and
- 8:29you trade so that
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: that time is equal between you and that other parent?
- 8:35Is there a way where you can incorporate your children into a
- 8:40creative project?
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 8:42certainly you're going to end up with quite a bit of randomness
- 8:47invested in your work,
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: especially if you are a visual artist.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: But that might be something that frees you,
- 8:56even if it's just teaching your kids a certain technique and
- 9:02doing it alongside them.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: and allowing just a little bit of free play.
- 9:08A little low-stakes play is really one of the most wonderful
- 9:14things that we can do
- 9:16for ourselves as creative people is to remove the pressure to
- 9:22perform perfectly.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: We can make creativity a habit.
- 9:30And that's something about the 15 minutes a day that I keep
- 9:35coming up with.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: You can,
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: use that to free write,
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: to meditate,
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: to make notes,
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: sketch in a notebook,
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: doodle.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Or expose yourself to art daily.
- 9:58And by that I mean not just,
- 10:00hey,
- 10:00look,
- 10:01there's a painting or I watched a television show.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: The idea that you expose yourself to art with your critical lens,
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: that will also help you remove some of those roadblocks.
- 10:20For example,
- 10:21I mean,
- 10:22most of us watch some amount of television in a day.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: So if you're watching,
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: a late night talk show or whatever,
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: and a joke made you laugh,
- 10:35why don't you go ahead and spend a little time just
- 10:38deconstructing that joke?
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: What about it was funny?
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Was it the delivery?
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: How did the delivery make the content hit the way that it did?
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Is it the construction?
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Is it the perfect placement of words?
- 10:57Is it the way the comedian's face looked when they said it so
- 11:02that they're sort of
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: conveying an opposite idea from the words that they were saying?
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: We encounter art every day.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: But if you take time to encounter art critically,
- 11:19that's another way that you can sort of open up your practice
- 11:26for yourself and be a
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: little bit more conscious with how you expend your creative energy.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: The more you do this as a habit,
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: the more creativity is going to present itself in your daily life.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, now we're getting down to the nitty-gritty of today's topic.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: We're going to talk about your inner critic.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: That voice that tells you, no, don't bother.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: You're too old to start on that pathway now.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: You didn't study as a child.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Or you haven't done that in years.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Or,
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 12:19whatever that voice that is telling you that you are not enough
- 12:26or that no one is
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: interested in what you have to say,
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: I'm going to ask you to befriend that voice.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: That voice has been a part of your life for a long time.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Have you ever visualized that voice?
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Here may be a chance where you can close your eyes,
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: or if you are so inclined,
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: you can doodle,
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: or you can write things down,
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: however your brain best processes this information.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: I want you to visualize that voice.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Give that voice a body.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Put it in your mind's eye.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Have you seen this body before?
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Are you familiar with it?
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Is it a totally new creation?
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: If it's sort of a monstrous amalgam of parts of things,
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: can you zero in on what those parts are and what they might mean to you?
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: What does that voice sound like?
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: I want you to really hear it.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: Is it an adult voice?
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: Is it loud and sonorous?
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Is it deep?
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: Is it high and squeaky?
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Is it timid?
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Is it angry?
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Really give shape to that voice that's in your head.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: And then I want you to treat that voice with care and concern.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: I want you to consider that that voice is not your enemy.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: That voice is
- 15:01Something that you have developed to protect yourself from pain,
- 15:09from rejection.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: That voice has been a little alarm bell.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: When did you first hear it?
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Can you go back that far?
- 15:31Is there an incident that comes to mind where that voice was
- 15:36really loud and insistent?
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: What was going on in your life at that time?
- 15:47Chances are you've developed this voice or have adopted this
- 15:52voice because it may
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: be the voice of someone in your life.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: that you've adopted this voice as a way to keep yourself safe from harm.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: And that's why I want you to treat this voice with care.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Because though it may be misguided,
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: and it may be using tactics that are harmful,
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: it came here to save you.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: And maybe this voice needs a little love and affection as well.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: So for this week, I want you to have a conversation with this voice.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: Talk to it.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: What is this voice afraid of?
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: And then I want you to address this.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: the fears of that voice.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Because once you hear it out, you may find out that this is not logical.
- 17:03Maybe this voice is speaking from a very immature place and you
- 17:11are now an adult
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: who can address this voice and calm its fears.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Give it comfort.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: And let it know that you have a game plan for this exploration.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: Let it know that you're in control and that you got this.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: Let it know that it is not only okay to not be perfect,
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: That it's okay to make mistakes.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: That it's okay to paint over or erase or even be frustrated.
- 17:59It's okay to not produce your best work because those are just
- 18:03stepping stones to
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: becoming a better,
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: more competent,
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: technically astute artist.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: That you can't get there unless you try.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: Soothe that little voice.
- 18:23Maybe create a ritual where every time it gets loud that you
- 18:29sit down and have a
- 18:30cup of hot cocoa or tea with that voice and you talk to it and
- 18:35you give it a cookie
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: and tell it a little sweet bedtime story and let it go to sleep.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Whatever ritual sort of
- 18:48is calming for you because the truth is that voice is part of
- 18:55you and it deserves
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: love and acceptance too.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: It's not here to hurt you.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: It's trying to help.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: It's a little foolish in its methodology but it's trying to help.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: That's our exercise for this week.
- 19:24If it's helpful for you to create a reminder of this
- 19:29conversation with this inner critic,
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: that's another opportunity for creativity.
- 19:35And maybe that's something that you can keep in a prominent
- 19:40spot in your creative space.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: So you can remind yourself that
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: That this voice doesn't have to control you.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: That this voice is part of you that needs nurturance and care.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: That's it for this week's Imperfect Impulse.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: I will join you again next week.
