- 0:07The Detroit Tigers faced the Oakland Athletics for a Tuesday afternoon game at Oakland Alameda County Coliseum on August 24th, 1982.
- 0:15Detroit came into the game with a 64-60 record under manager Sparky Anderson.
- 0:20But excitement around the Tigers was on the rise.
- 0:23The team had finished in second place during the strike-shortened 1981 season
- 0:27and was anchored by a solid core of youngsters including Jack Morris, Lance Parrish, Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Kirk Gibson, and newcomer Chet Lemon,
- 0:37who had been acquired in the offseason and a trade to the White Sox for Steve Kemp.
- 0:41Oakland had lost to the Yankees in the ALCS in 1981 and were now struggling in 1982,
- 0:47entering the game with a 56-70 record under manager Billy Martin, in which would prove to be his final year with the A's.
- 0:54This audio recording is from the Detroit Radio broadcast featuring the legendary announcers Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey.
- 1:24The Yankees are in the lead with a
- 1:271-2 pitch coming to Lou Whitaker.
- 1:31He all works off the third base side of the slant, feet close together, gets his sign from Heath, winds and pitches, and Whitaker hits a foul out of play in the seats down the lower.
- 1:42Wilson and Herndon are set to follow here in the opening inning. Each of those had home runs in the game last night, as the Tigers took the opening game of the two-game set.
- 1:55Keogh delivers, Whitaker swings and misses on a high hard one, struck him out.
- 2:01Glenn Wilson will be the Tiger batter.
- 2:17Young Settafielder has impressed a lot of observers since he came up from Evansville.
- 2:26Last night he had a home run, a single and a one, ended up with a two for four.
- 2:33Picked up a couple of our RBIs. Here's a line shot right to the glove of Gross, 40-ounce.
- 2:39The ball hit about as hard as anybody can hit one, but Gross was standing right in its path and he gloved it.
- 2:45Two down, Herndon steps up for the Tigers.
- 2:50Barry batting 292. 19 home runs and 69 RBIs.
- 2:59One of his home runs last night, he also had a single last evening.
- 3:03Right-hand batter backs off, it's in too close from the right-hand pitching Keogh.
- 3:09Jim and Kim and Joshua Cooper from Toledo, Tiger fans, here today.
- 3:16There's a foul back into the seat.
- 3:20Had a good bit of morning fog and overcast, it burned off about an hour before game time.
- 3:26And now the skies are clear and the sun is bright in Northern California.
- 3:31Herndon takes and pitches in close to the knee.
- 3:36Two and one, the County Tiger left fielder.
- 3:43Keogh into action, delivers. Swing and a foul back to the screen, 2-2 the count on Larry Herndon.
- 3:51The Tigers now have won seven and lost one against the Oakland team this year.
- 3:55They've handled them fairly easily.
- 4:00Jack Hummel out of the ballpark, the former Tiger trainer recovering from his hernia operation and in good shape.
- 4:08Herndon swings and the Nubs won foul at the plate.
- 4:14And McRiley wants to inspect the ball, he says it's alright, he'll keep it in play.
- 4:192-2 the count on Herndon. Another visitor today was Charlie Silberich, one-time Tiger coach.
- 4:28Working here with the Oakland A's now.
- 4:35Here's the motion by Matt Keogh, he pitches and Herndon hits a fly ball to the right.
- 4:40Armuth comes in and near the line running hard, makes the catch.
- 4:44And the Tigers go 1-2-3 in the first.
- 4:47In the half, fitting, those goals.
- 4:49This is Ernie Harwell and I'm pleased to have the Detroit Free Press as a sponsor of our 1982 Tiger broadcast.
- 4:56You know I have a lot of friends who've been Free Press fans for years.
- 4:59And the first thing they do when they get up in the morning is to turn the sports section of the Free Press.
- 5:04Creating the sports section is like having an instant replay right there at your breakfast table.
- 5:08Especially their baseball coverage.
- 5:10When it comes to baseball, the Free Press is in a league by itself.
- 5:14Complete, concise, interesting, informative.
- 5:17Did you know that they devote an entire page just to baseball every day of the week?
- 5:21You don't find that kind of coverage in many newspapers, but the Free Press has it.
- 5:26And I guess that's one reason why the Free Press is Michigan's first newspaper for sports.
- 5:31Get the Free Press delivered to your doorstep. Phone 222-6500.
- 5:36That number again, 222-6500.
- 5:40The Free Press. First. When you need it most.
- 5:45Thousands of people have gotten a slice of the good life.
- 5:48The exciting instant lottery game.
- 5:51But what about you? Are you one of those who think most of the prizes have been won by now?
- 5:56Point of fact, there are still millions of winning tickets left, including instant winners of $25,000.
- 6:03And the grand prize?
- 6:05A thousand dollars a week every week for the rest of your life.
- 6:09So don't miss your chance at the good life.
- 6:11Your chances were never better.
- 6:14Brought to you by the Michigan Lottery.
- 6:26Well, the Tiger rookie right-handed Jerry Ujjer heating up now. Jerry's won seven games in the last six. This is his 17th start.
- 6:36Talking about rookies. The Boston Braves won here back in 1937. Had two rookies who were 20-game winners.
- 6:45You don't find that very often. Lou Fetty and Jim Turner.
- 6:49You remember Jim a good bit later on was a coach for many years with the New York Yankees until he retired down to his home state of Tennessee.
- 6:59Ricky Henderson who is in the spotlight these days because of the way he's chasing Lou Brock's record.
- 7:06He's sent to break it. He's only three away from a tie at the moment. And he'll be leading off against Jerry Ujjer.
- 7:15There's a hand for Henderson as he's announced on the public address system.
- 7:20Batting 271, he has eight home runs and 45 RBI. He's walked 105 times.
- 7:27Already with about six weeks to go. Right-hander against the right-hander. No score for his fitting.
- 7:32And Ricky takes a ball low. Ball one.
- 7:41Jerry Ujjer trying to hold him off now. Here's the windup by Jerry. He delivers a low one.
- 7:47You may have heard Dan Petrie talking on our free game interview about how tough Henderson is to pitch to.
- 7:53Where that's the shrinking strike zone of his. The way he hits in the crouch.
- 7:58That's a good bit away from the plate. Right-hander against the right-hander. The 2-0 pitch.
- 8:04And Ujjer fires one outside. That ball three.
- 8:07And of course it's got to be in the back of the pitcher's mind. Don't walk this guy.
- 8:12And he turns around and right now he's within one pitcher putting him on.
- 8:17Jerry gets his sign, works again. Here it comes and he takes the strike. Got a fast ball over.
- 8:30Three-one, the count on the leadoff man, Ricky Henderson. He's attracted a large board of photographers down there.
- 8:37The motion and the pitch by Ujjer. He takes a walk. Ball four.
- 8:42Well we'll see the test right away from Bill Fahey. Diving for Lance Parrott.
- 8:52Gross will be the batter. One thing about hitting behind Ricky Henderson you'll find is the amount of fast balls.
- 8:59Ujjer has been using a change-up breaking pitch against left-hand hitters.
- 9:05Now whether he'll do it with Henderson on or not, we'll have to wait and see.
- 9:08Gross is hitting 247. Six home runs in 30 RBI.
- 9:13Leach holding on the bag with Ricky Henderson.
- 9:17You can hear the crowd beginning its rhythmic applause here as he fits DeGroce.
- 9:21Ricky with the lead. He goes. The pitch is high. Here's the throw by Fahey. Not in time.
- 9:26So and Fahey's number 116.
- 9:30Henderson has told everybody that he wants to break a leg of his home before they leave for the steps of Milwaukee.
- 9:45Now Gross out of the batter's box. That pitch to DeGroce was a ball.
- 10:03The Tigers really expect Henderson to go all the time.
- 10:09Stop being very subtle about it. He just takes off and goes.
- 10:14Now he's trying to get a lead in the second base. Ujjer appearing in to get the sign from Fahey.
- 10:20Jerry Setsun deals and it is a ball all the way. Ball two on Gross.
- 10:30After Wayne it'll be Dwayne Murphy.
- 10:36Malfield is straight up on Gross. He's a long ball threat.
- 10:40No score first inning. The Tigers went out one, two, three.
- 10:44Henderson led up with a walk here for the A's and stole second base.
- 10:51Now a 2-0 situation. Here's the set by Ujjer and the bluffs and Henderson handles back toward second base.
- 11:03I sure would like to have seen Ujjer throw the first when Henderson got the bag. He had a lead over there.
- 11:09I don't think he could have gotten back to the bag with any decent toss at first.
- 11:13Now here's the set again by Jerry ready to deal. The pitch to Gross is a low one and the Count is ball three.
- 11:23Henderson generally gets by with sheer speed. He doesn't worry as much as some base runners have in the past.
- 11:29Some great stealers about pitchers moves or establishing leads and all those other little
- 11:37things that come with stealing. He depends on his speed.
- 11:41There's a ball low and Gross has a walk. So Ujjer has walked two and sets the table for Dwayne Murphy, the left-handed batting setter fielder.
- 11:53Murphy batting 2-43. He's up there near the top on his club at home runs with 18. He has 75 RBI.
- 12:02He's the team leader in that department. Here comes Roger Craig out now. He wants to try to settle Ujjer down a little bit here in the first inning.
- 12:13Ujjer went five and a third innings in Anaheim and got the Tiger 8-6 victory over Ken Foch his last time out.
- 12:24That was last Friday night.
- 12:33Well the confab's over at the mound and Mr. Craig goes back to the dugout.
- 12:38The A's have a first inning threat thanks to a couple of walks. Tigers are pulling their end field up a little bit.
- 12:46And here's Dwayne Murphy at the plate. Now field is straight up and deep on Murphy.
- 12:56He stands a little more forward in the batter's box than most hitters.
- 13:01Ujjer sets and deals and it is a pitch out but the runners aren't moving. Ball one.
- 13:07They have put 15 doubles still so far this year.
- 13:25Here's the set. There's a throw to second and he is back safely.
- 13:30Camel ducks behind the runner Henderson and he slid back head first. Ricky makes all his slides head first.
- 13:42Now he edges off the bag. Lincolns that lead.
- 13:46Gross comes off first. Here's the set by Ujjer and a pitch all the way. It is a strike on the outside corner. One and one.
- 14:05Ujjer has no 1982 record against this team. In fact he has no career record against them.
- 14:17Murphy waits on the one-one delivery from Jerry. They go to the runners. They pitch his end tie for the third. He saves.
- 14:26Number 117 for Ricky Henderson. One short of time record. Gross failed in and picked up the back end of the double field.
- 14:45So that's three steals in this inning by the A's to by Ricky Henderson. One more and he will tie the all-time record set by Blue Rock.
- 15:03Man on second, man on third. The Tigers will play their end field back and it is a 2-1 count on Murphy.
- 15:21He's a set the pitch. It is a low one and Henderson is coming home. On the third goes Gross. The ball knocked down by May and it'll be scores a wild pitch.
- 15:35Knocked down by Bill. It bounced over to his left and the runners moved up one. Henderson gets a run.
- 15:41Gross takes third, one to nothing Oakland in the opening inning. And they have scored on two walks, steals and a wild pitch.
- 15:57End field are still staying back for the Tigers and the count is three and a one on Dwayne Murphy. Now Gross comes down the line.
- 16:07Here's the wind up by Uger. The pitch is a ball in the dirt. He walked in. That'll be the third straight walk up Jerry.
- 16:20Tony Armis will be the next man to bat. And the young Dave Rucker, the California left-hander, throwing in the both-man for the Tigers.
- 16:36End field playing back in double play depth on Tony Armis. Tony batting 240. 21 home runs and 69 RBI. Outfield is deep and straight up.
- 16:50The pitch to him is a low one and a good pick up by Fahey. Uger has had trouble locating the plate. It started when Henderson was up.
- 16:59He walked to Ricky, walked to Gross, walked to Murphy. The steals stand with Jim between and the Tigers find themselves behind one to nothing in the opening inning.
- 17:15Cabell came over the mound. Fahey went out to try to settle down the pitcher.
- 17:28Murphy has won for the last 17 times at bat. Right hand about a wedding. Here's the pitch and it is a ball and the runner first to Murphy goes.
- 17:39He'll make it easy. Now that'll be a steal for Murphy. It'll be the fourth steal of this inning.
- 17:55Murphy's got 24 of them.
- 18:02Armis steps away. They've got the infield still back with the runners down at second and third.
- 18:10Uger looking to third base and here's the pitch on the way. It is a strike on the outside corner.
- 18:16Didn't Gross steal home against the Tigers a couple of years ago? Yes he did. Jack Morris, wasn't it?
- 18:21Jack worked from the line up and Gross came in. A man who generally you don't count on as being a super base stealer.
- 18:30Armis still waiting. Gross down the line and the pitch is swung on at the left field. It is a foul ball into the bullpen.
- 18:40Almost a relief to see the bat make contact with the ball.
- 18:45Yeah you figure the Tigers might have a better chance. That's right.
- 18:51That's a crazy inning so far. The Tigers went out one, two, three.
- 18:55And now the Oakland A's that scored a run without the benefit of a hit or an error for that matter.
- 19:01And they've got runners at second and third and nobody down.
- 19:05And Armis at the plate and Tony swings up a ground ball to short.
- 19:09Trammell will go to first base with it. Armis is out. Gross scores and on to third goes Murphy.
- 19:15To nothing Oakland, the man at third one down. RBI for Armis on the bounce out to Allen Trammell.
- 19:22Number four, Dan Meyer.
- 19:25It's Danny Meyer the ex-Tiger playing first base.
- 19:34How field is straight up on Danny? Maybe a little bit over to the right field side on him.
- 19:41Batting 265 and he has eight home runs. 57 RBI's. It is a ball low.
- 19:50Murphy bluffing down the line from third on that pitch from Jerry Ujua to Danny Meyer.
- 19:55To nothing Oakland leads first inning.
- 20:05There's a bounding foul down toward the Tiger bullpen past first base.
- 20:17Meyer just safely in file of the last six games.
- 20:32Always a threat at the plate. Danny Meyer left hand about a waiting. Here's a bit. He takes a wide one.
- 20:40Two on the count on him. Remember that Meyer started out of the Tiger system with Bristol and really burned up the league that first minor league season.
- 20:49He hit 396 that year.
- 20:54Murphy down the line from third. Now Ujua may work off the set position this time. Let's see.
- 21:03Looking in now he goes for the stretch. Looks to third. He pitches. Meyer swings and misses at a low fastball.
- 21:11And the count on Danny is 2-2.
- 21:17He'll be followed by Davy Lopes.
- 21:31Ujua to the stretch again.
- 21:34And the pitch on the way. Swung on it to set a field deep. Wilson goes back.
- 21:39He's being tagged by Murphy. Wilson makes the catch.
- 21:43Murphy comes home. It's a sacrifice from Meyer. A 3-0 lead for the Oakland team.
- 21:49They have picked up three without a hit. The first three men walked and all three have crossed the plate.
- 22:00Davy Lopes will be the next Oakland hitter.
- 22:06Davy batting 2-5-3 with 11 homers. 36 runs batted in.
- 22:17Davy had a single and four turns against Dan Peetree at the opening game last night.
- 22:25Wind up by Ujua and the right-hander fires a fastball low. Ball one.
- 22:37Lopes cuts and balls it back into the seat behind the plate.
- 22:49Peetree's jumping out in front. 3-0 in the opening inning.
- 22:55Here's the motion now by Ujua. The pitch on the way. Swung on a line drive right to Cabela third for the final out.
- 23:02It's three runs on a no-hit. There were no errors. Nobody left. That would be it. One inning. Oakland 3-0.
- 23:09There are a number of insurance companies who use the word farm or farmers as part of their names.
- 23:14It's probably because many companies started in business insuring farms, ranches, people, and vehicles in the agricultural regions of our country.
- 23:22But there is only one organization with the name of Farmers Insurance Group, FIG.
- 23:28You may recognize their farmers agent commitment to always be fast, fair, and friendly.
- 23:34Or you may recognize the name of a farmers agent. These dedicated agents work and live near you.
- 23:40They are active in community affairs because they know that their success is tied to the success of the community.
- 23:47And they realize that their business is totally dependent upon satisfied farmers policyholders.
- 23:53Farmers and farmers agents work constantly to keep the cost of insurance down and the amount of protection up.
- 23:59An epsilon, he gave a call to Nick Brooks, 485-3880.
- 24:04Insult, Lion Tom Groom, 437-5309.
- 24:10Meet the enemy of your spark plug.
- 24:16Gas robbing sooty carbon.
- 24:20Motorcraft spark plugs fight the enemy.
- 24:23With Motorcraft's extended tip design plugs, carbon is burned away in normal driving in properly tuned cars.
- 24:29Motorcraft spark plugs from Ford for the future of your car for sure.

- 24:41People who know quality know the Honey Baked Ham.
- 24:44A ham so good it'll haunt you till it's gone.
- 24:47Honey Baked Ham in Detroit, Roseville, Troy and in Grand Rapids.
- 24:50The Honey Baked Ham Company.
- 24:54Mike Ivey will be leading off with the Tigers now, they went out 1-2-3 in the first inning against the right-hander Matt Keough.
- 25:02Ivey in the game last night hit the ball hard but didn't have a hit.
- 25:06First two times up he hit the long hard drives caught by the outfielders.
- 25:12Ivey, Cabell and Leach will be testing Keough and it is a 3-0 lead for Oakland.
- 25:18The Tigers are adding in the second.
- 25:21Here's a slow pitch to Mike, it's a little bit low ball one.
- 25:25The outfield deeps it up on him and the infield also backs.
- 25:30Keough right-hands one of the plates and Ivey takes the strike on the outside corner.
- 25:35Talking about hard hit balls, Burke shot and used to keep a scorecard when he managed to dodge it.
- 25:41And if you hit the ball hard you got credit just as much as if the ball had fallen in for a hit.
- 25:46Here's the pitch and it is swung on and Leach still has the base hit by Ivey.
- 25:51He reached out on that slow pitch and the line fell up to you for a single.
- 25:56This shot didn't pay too much attention to the actual box score.
- 26:00The ball was hit there on the line drive to third base.
- 26:03He figured that was good as a ball hit hard that wasn't caught in his scorecard.
- 26:08Here's Cabell coming into the mat.
- 26:13Tigers have a man on and nobody down, they trail free nothing.
- 26:16Enos didn't get a hit last night, he went 0 for 4.
- 26:20His batting average is 265.
- 26:25Couple of home runs, 32 RBIs with a lanky right-hand batter.
- 26:29He pops this one up, it's over to the second base position.
- 26:33He's under it, he gloves it and holding it first is Ivey.
- 26:44Cliff Johnson, the big first baseman DH of his Oakland team calls Mike Ivey ivory.
- 26:50Mike says he's been calling me that ever since I came to the big league.
- 26:58Here's Leach ready to step in now, 3-0 Oakland.
- 27:01Tigers have a man on and the man out in their second inning.
- 27:03Leach did not get a hit last night, he went 0 for 2.
- 27:06Had a couple of walks, batting 224 and he takes the ball outside.
- 27:14Rick has three homers, he's knocked in 12 runs this season.
- 27:19Outfield a right on him, key out and it is, it is a strike, a fast ball in above the knee.
- 27:27Here's Sam Wynip from Farmington Hills, out to see this series.
- 27:34Now the set by Matney pitches, slow curve, hangs outside.
- 27:42He's got a pretty good fast ball but you see him throw a lot of slow curves and a lot of sliders.
- 27:49He's another excellent fielder.
- 27:56Here's a tall right hander, kicks and deals.
- 27:58Here's a high fly ball, deep right it may go foul, down in the right field corner.
- 28:03It is a foul ball, a long one but foul.
- 28:07Let's pause briefly for station identification.
- 28:10This is a Detroit Tiger baseball netball.
- 28:12You're listening to the Detroit Tigers flagship station, the 50,000 watt voice of the Great Lakes.
- 28:17This is AM 76 WJR Detroit.
- 28:27A long, loud strike on Rick Leach.
- 28:31He hit that one way back of the seat but he pulled it foul by about 10 feet.
- 28:35Throwing a lap to try again, 2-2 the count on him.
- 28:38Key out of the set position pitches.
- 28:41It's a strike called, he's sitting there like that by the side of the road and watch that one go by.
- 28:47Stuck him out.
- 28:48The second strike out for the Oakland right hander, Key O.
- 28:54Here comes Len Jones who contributed to the Tiger attack last night with singles his last two times up.
- 29:012 for 4 in the Tiger victory over Oakland yesterday.
- 29:09It is a fast ball out and then ball on.
- 29:18Here's the set now by Key O.
- 29:21He pitches, there's his slider in for a strike.
- 29:24One and one.
- 29:25Key O will throw a screwball but he'll use that mostly against the left-handed.
- 29:31And the Tigers think he'll throw the slip ball once in a while.
- 29:35Here's a ball low, 2 and 1.
- 29:38Most teams figure most of the ace pitchers throw spitters.
- 29:43I think a lot of guys do around the league who don't get credit for it or blame for it.
- 29:48Depending on the way you root for them, there's a bounding ball to shortstop.
- 29:52Gloved by Stanley, he flips it over the ropes and the Tigers are out.
- 29:56And Di-V is fourth for the final out.
- 29:58No runs and one hit.
- 30:00No errors, one man left.
- 30:01And at the end of an inning and a half it is Oakland 3-D. Nothing.

- 51:32Got to keep them a little bit more off balance earlier in the year.
- 51:35He'd had a lot of problems with the left hand batter and he added that pitch to his repertoire.
- 51:41Now gross steps out and back in the batter's box here in Oakland wind up by you.
- 51:47He's got a pitchers and there's a fly ball to set a field of both and is there to his right.

- 52:37Basically a fastball hitter.
- 52:42Stand deep fairly close together with his feet. Here's a bit and he takes the ball outside.
- 52:50Tigers try to play pitch him with the breaking balls away from the plate.
- 52:56Now the motion of the pitch he is jammed with a fastball.

- 53:05Oakland third inning final appearance for the Tigers in this ballpark in 1982.
- 53:14Now the motion of the pitch it is high. It was a close one to do.
- 53:24In that nationally game the only major league game going on besides this one the Cubs are leading eight to four now in the eighth inning over the Giants.
- 53:33The Lars and Buckner have hit home run for the team. Jenkins and Gale with a started.
- 53:38Here's a fastball low and the county's full three to Gale has been relieved by Holland and the brining in that order.

- 53:56This will be the fifth walk issued by you.
- 54:03Tony Armis drove home a run with a bounce out the travel to shortstop in the opening inning will be the batter.
- 54:13And they've got the infield to double play depth against Tony.
- 54:23You just stepping off the slab now not quite ready to go to work again.
- 54:34Murphy getting a lead draws a throw over there to a lead.
- 54:49And they pitch on the way there's a drive to left might be her and go back to the wall reaches makes the cat about as far back as he could go and retreating and holding at first is Murphy the ball dropped by Leeds.

- 55:21Well the infield can play back on Danny.
- 55:27Three nothing Oakland made their batting on the third inning against you.
- 55:37There's a toss over the first.
- 55:42No damage over there Murphy back in plenty of time.
- 55:56Is a fastball outside.
- 55:59Murphy has been on on two straight walks.

- 58:59I think he got up there and realized it wasn't his bat.
- 59:03Excuse me come turned into the plate.
- 59:07He'll be followed by Ivy and Cabell in the fourth inning.
- 59:12Matt Keough is struck out three has not walked anybody and allowed to hit.
- 59:16There's a looper toward left field that'll be a hit for Herndon one half of a mid of Henderson he charged then played it safe.
- 59:23And Larry is on with a leadoff single.
- 59:32I think we've had a reminder about a station break.
- 59:34So let's get ready to slip one in here.
- 59:36Let's pause for station identification.
- 59:38This is the Detroit Tiger baseball network.
- 59:40This is the 50,000 watt voice of the Great Lakes and the flagship station for the Detroit Tigers.
- 59:45You're listening to AM 76 WJR Detroit.
- 59:56Here's Mike Ivy.
- 59:58Ivy has singled the left of the first Tiger hit in the second inning.
- 1:00:02Herndon at first the pitch to him and it's taken low and outside for ball one.
- 1:00:07Keough with 10 wins 16 defeats.
- 1:00:12That's that kind of a dotted record one year he had 17 losses and only two victories.
- 1:00:21Ivy swings and pops it up the short right field backpedaling his lopes.
- 1:00:25He gives way to Armis and Tony just not too far back to second base position makes the catch.
- 1:00:35There's one out with Herndon at first and Nina's Cabell will be the batter.
- 1:00:38He goes out to talk to Keough.
- 1:00:45He's had some problems with control this year but he's not evident in any here so far in this game.
- 1:01:07They toss the first base Herndon gets back.
- 1:01:12Second round to see if there's going to change.
- 1:01:15We got some announcement about somebody with stomach spasm.
- 1:01:17Another toss to first.
- 1:01:18Larry is back.
- 1:01:26See any change defensively but I can note here's the pitch.
- 1:01:28It's a pitch out and not much of one.
- 1:01:30Cabell drops the bat at the plate.
- 1:01:33He's had stepped way to his right reach back toward the plate.
- 1:01:42Nina's is having a conversation with Mike Riley about that.
- 1:01:46He's jabbering away as standing outside.
- 1:01:56Herndon at first with one down here in the Tiger fourth inning.
- 1:01:59Three nothing A's they scored without a hit and a first inning on three walks, four stolen bases, a wild pitch and a bounce on the sacrifice fly.
- 1:02:11All contributing to the three runs.
- 1:02:13Cabell checks his swing and fouls it back.
- 1:02:18Two strikes on E.
- 1:02:31Herndon at first with a leadoff single.
- 1:02:33Ivy is hit a pop out to right field and now Cabell with a two strike count.
- 1:02:39They pitch to Enos fouled back into the stands up behind the Tiger dugout.
- 1:02:47Matt Keough comes from a fine athletic family.
- 1:02:51Of course his dad was a former Major League outfielder.
- 1:02:54Played with six different Major League teams.
- 1:02:57Now scouts for the Cardinals.
- 1:03:00But and his uncle Joe played with the A's and the White Sox.
- 1:03:05There's a swing and a miss.
- 1:03:06Cabell fouled throw the first back is Herndon.
- 1:03:10Four strikeouts for Keough.
- 1:03:11He gave him a change up and brings up Rick Leach.
- 1:03:19Our man, Rick Leach.
- 1:03:22Now with the ransom information about somebody with some stomach spasms and it turns out I checked the defense didn't see any changes there and didn't notice.
- 1:03:31But we're working with three umpires.
- 1:03:33Larry Barnett has been excused for the day pitches low for ball one to Rick Leach.
- 1:03:47He's really overshipped their outfielders on the Tiger hitters.
- 1:03:50They're shifting way to right on Leach and Rick takes the strike one and one.
- 1:03:58Leach took a call third strike his first time up.
- 1:04:02He went over to in the opener here last night.
- 1:04:09Toss over to first base and earned and get back and first.
- 1:04:15Matt dad Marty was not only a Major League baseball player but was perhaps one of the finest football players developed in this area.
- 1:04:26The old those days he was playing a triple threat tailback.
- 1:04:34Big leap for her in the first the pitch to Leach on the corner.
- 1:04:37It's a strike one and two on Rick.
- 1:04:39He goes back and grabs a handful of dirt.
- 1:04:42Flips it away.
- 1:04:56The pitch from Keough just a bit wide two and two.
- 1:05:04Keough has not had much luck winning here at home as record two and nine this year at home eight and seven on the road.
- 1:05:14But he's got three nothing lead today.
- 1:05:16Leach fouls it back to the screen.
- 1:05:25That's been giving up a bundle of home runs this season a total of twenty eight.
- 1:05:30So far this year last year he gave up of course a shortened season but he gave up eleven Leach takes it in the dirt it bounces away from heat but out in front of the plate.
- 1:05:41He just puts it back to Keough no advance by Herndon.
- 1:05:45The full count now on Rick and Keough figured that ball got damaged a little bit skipping in front of the plate off the shin guard of heat.
- 1:06:00He exchanges it.
- 1:06:03Not a cloud in the sky here.
- 1:06:05Well the Oakland folks and the Tigers came out the ballpark were almost apologizing about the weather.
- 1:06:12The natives they should know it would burn off and it sure did.
- 1:06:17Now the pitch there goes Herndon and it's taken outside for ball four and the Tigers get two men on the first time in the same inning.
- 1:06:28Leach at first turned in at second the first pass issued by Keough and he wants to have a talk with Matt.
- 1:06:34The batter will be Lynn Jones.
- 1:06:37Lynn had a couple of hits last night he had not played in the Tiger game in two weeks.
- 1:06:44A little strain of the right ankle and Lynn is playing in right field with Chet Lemmon suffering from a pulled hamstring.
- 1:06:55When he came through with a couple of singles up the middle last night and he hit another ball that was deflected for a double play.
- 1:07:03He hit that one harder than anything.
- 1:07:07Two on two off the pitch from Keough high and away ball one on Lynn.
- 1:07:21Herndon at second Leach at first.
- 1:07:24Keough delivers fouled back above the Tiger dugout into the stand.
- 1:07:32Now they're in the ninth inning at Wrigley Field now and it's still an eight to four Cubs lead.
- 1:07:39Giants an unhappy team these days they feel they got jobs a bit in St. Louis.
- 1:07:46And were beaten yesterday by the Cubs.
- 1:07:51They move back into contention with Atlanta failing ground ball off the leg of Keough it's worked toward third everybody is safe the bases are loaded.
- 1:07:59Gross picked up the ball near the line and he had no play anywhere.
- 1:08:03That was a shot hit up the middle again by Lynn and this time it came off the foot of Keough I believe.
- 1:08:09It'll be a base hit for Lynn Jones loading the bases for Bill Fahey.
- 1:08:18The Tigers with a chance to climb back in it here in the fourth inning have loaded the bases with two off.
- 1:08:24Fahey popped a foul to Danny Meyer his first time up.
- 1:08:28Bill subbing for Lance Parish here this afternoon on the spot right now at the plate.
- 1:08:36Here's the wind up by Keough the pitch he checks it's on the outside corner strike one goal.
- 1:08:50Well look the third the full line up Keough pitches ground foul he changed up on him and he just got a little piece of that he's out in front of it.
- 1:08:59Two strikes on Bill.
- 1:09:06One time infielder Matt Keough he played three years as a pro as an infielder before becoming a pitcher.
- 1:09:18Bases loaded with Tigers two strikes on Fahey two out the pitch to Bill.
- 1:09:23He swings and bounces a foul down past first base coach Dick Kraszyewski.
- 1:09:39Keough off the mound walked back up.
- 1:09:44Tigers have four hits off him but have not been able to score.
- 1:09:51Two strikes on Fahey Keough delivers ground foul again over toward the Tiger dugout.
- 1:10:02Fahey hanging in.
- 1:10:06Lance was in the initial lineup but he got the call out here at the ballpark and put his street clothes back on again and is headed back home catching a plane out of the Bay Area.
- 1:10:17The call that Arlen was in labor and hopefully about to expect to produce their second child.
- 1:10:26The join David here's the pitch to Fahey high for a ball that was a fastball from Keough.
- 1:10:36John Walkenfuss is suffering from a sprained ankle.
- 1:10:41He is helping out and in uniform and he's down on the bullpen.
- 1:10:47But not nearly 100 percent.
- 1:10:50Fahey is the man behind the plate here today and there's a wide one to Bill to two counts.
- 1:10:56He's up ready to throw. He likes to throw to the base.
- 1:11:07He does a far better percentage of cutting down runners than Newman who sees more action behind the plate.
- 1:11:15With a little better bat to two count bases loaded the pitch to Bill Fahey high from all three.
- 1:11:23Keough got two strikes on him. Fahey kept fouling him off.
- 1:11:27Now he's working. Finally he worked a couple of pitches that were just off the outside corner.
- 1:11:32That one was high.
- 1:11:38Now this will free the chains on the base runners.
- 1:11:46Well, Mary Garron starts the pitch. Swung on fly ball. The left field should be caught. Henderson is under it.
- 1:11:52He waits. He's got it. And the Tigers load them but leave them.
- 1:11:56And after three and a half innings, Oakland free, Detroit nothing.

- 1:13:00There's one chainsaw that continues to be the largest selling in the world and that says a lot about a steam.
- 1:13:06To be top saw, a steam's got to be rugged, hard working, smooth running and easy to start.
- 1:13:11So for the best selling steel chainsaw, check the yellow pages under saw.
- 1:13:15If that's the largest selling, hardest working cutting machine, then that can only mean
- 1:13:21That's right, it's a chainsaw from steel.
- 1:13:24Nothing works as hard as a steel.
- 1:13:29Today's Tiger game is being brought to you in part by the Michigan Bureau of State Lottery.
- 1:13:34But the game's not over yet. Baseball that is.
- 1:13:37Back to Ernie and Paul for more.
- 1:13:49Bottom of the fourth inning here at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum.
- 1:13:53Danny Meyer will be leading it off.
- 1:14:03Second time up for Whitey in the game, Danny had to sacrifice fly to drive in one of the three runs in the first inning.
- 1:14:09In case you joined us late, Wildness by Jerry Udger contributed to three Oakland runs.
- 1:14:15They still do not have a hit off Udger.
- 1:14:18Here's the wind up, the pitch to Meyer, swung on and popped foul down the third base line.
- 1:14:23Long run for Cabell. Can he get there? No, can't quite reach it down the bullpen.
- 1:14:27There's a lot of space to run behind first and third here at the Oakland Coliseum.
- 1:14:37Stands Bell back from behind the plate. Odd configuration in foul territory.
- 1:14:47Looks like a giant, weird sized keyhole.
- 1:14:54Now the wind up, the pitch from Udger. It's low and outside.
- 1:14:58One and one on Danny Meyer.
- 1:15:05Udger into the motion now delivers to the left hand hitting first baseman.
- 1:15:09It's just off the outside corner. Udger thought he had it.
- 1:15:13Two and one. Well he walked Ricky Henderson to lead off the ball game.
- 1:15:18Henderson stole second.
- 1:15:22Now the pitch to Meyer swung on a high foul fly to right.
- 1:15:26Racing is leeched but he won't get to this one. It's back in the stands.
- 1:15:31Getting back to that first inning he walked Ricky Henderson to lead it off.
- 1:15:34And Henderson stole second, number 116.
- 1:15:39He walked Wayne Gross. Then they pulled a double steal.
- 1:15:43Henderson getting his 117th. One within Lou Brock's record.
- 1:15:49Then a wild pitch brought home Henderson.
- 1:15:52And Dwayne Murphy walked.
- 1:15:55He stole second. A bounce out by Tony Armiscout in a run and a sacrifice fly by Meyer scored the other.
- 1:16:02Low and inside. Three to count now on Danny Meyer.
- 1:16:09Three walks, four stolen bases and a wild pitch in that inning.
- 1:16:13There's called strike three. Meyer started the first base and he's out of there.
- 1:16:18Second strikeout for Uger.
- 1:16:22Here's Davy Lopes who lined out the Cabell his first time up.
- 1:16:32Got a final now from Wrigley Field, the only other matinee in the majors today.
- 1:16:37The Cubs defeated the Giants eight to four. Eight runs, ten hits.
- 1:16:41The Giants had four runs and six hits.
- 1:16:44Rich Gale started and didn't last very long. He left in the second inning.
- 1:16:49There's a called strike on Davy Lopes.
- 1:16:53Gale the loser, five and thirteen and Fergie Jenkins hung in there after giving up three runs in the first two innings.
- 1:16:59He wound up with his ninth win against thirteen defeats.
- 1:17:04Strike two called on Lopes.
- 1:17:08Buckner homered for the Cubs today with two on.
- 1:17:10Sularz homered for San Francisco.
- 1:17:16The Giants have lost four in a row.
- 1:17:19Now the pitch. There's a called strike three. Lopes fooled and he doesn't like it.
- 1:17:24He's mad but he should be mad at himself.
- 1:17:26Beauty by Uger. He really broke one off.
- 1:17:35Two off. That'll bring up the left hand hitting D.H. Mitchell-Page.
- 1:17:40The Giants had climbed back into the Western Division race but
- 1:17:45had run up into trouble at St. Louis and Chicago.
- 1:17:48Swing and a miss by Page. He went after a pitch that was almost in the dirt.
- 1:18:02Here's the wind up by Uger. They pitch.
- 1:18:05Swing and a miss. He took another wild cut.
- 1:18:09A young fellow came up to me at the coffee shop here yesterday and said,
- 1:18:13who do you think is going to win it? The Dodgers or the Giants?
- 1:18:20I think many people consider the Giants to have a great deal of a chance but they have done a good job.
- 1:18:26Coming back into contention for a while. Here's the wind up.
- 1:18:29The two strike pitch. Swung on and missed. Three straight pitches.
- 1:18:32And Uger strikes out the side in the fourth.
- 1:18:35After four innings, A's three, Tigers nothing.
- 1:18:41You've got to reach deep inside.
- 1:18:45We've all felt it. Come on, bring out that pride.
- 1:18:50The challenge to make every effort count in all we do to bring out the best.
- 1:18:56Bring out your best. Bring out your best. Bring out your best.
- 1:19:05The challenge for us was to brew a light beer worthy of the king of beers.
- 1:19:10One with a clean distinctive taste. Budweiser Light lives up to the challenge.
- 1:19:16Bring out your best. Budweiser Light. Bring out your best. Budweiser Light.
- 1:19:24To brew Budweiser Light, it took time, patience, and a commitment to quality.
- 1:19:31But then the best never comes easy. That's why there's nothing else like it.
- 1:19:36Budweiser Light. And Heiser Bush, St. Louis, Missouri.

- 1:20:24Here's Alan Trammell to lead off with the Tigers in the fifth inning. With Ernie Harwell, this is Paul Carey at the Oakland Coliseum.
- 1:20:32Wind up of a brief two game stay here. Tigers won the opening game last night 5-1 behind the pitching of Dan Petrie.
- 1:20:39But trail three nothing as we move to the fifth inning today. Swing and a miss by Trammell.
- 1:20:44Keough has shown some excellent off speed breaking pitches. Matt has struck out four, walked one, and allowed four hits.
- 1:20:55The right hander kicks and pitches to Trammell. He runs up as though the bunt holds off at the ball. One and one on Alan.
- 1:21:05Trammell bouncing back from that shoulder ailment. Now the pitch from Keough. It's high.
- 1:21:19Two and one on Alan. That was Tom Brookens nursing a bad elbow. Tigers a little short.
- 1:21:28Swung on a fly ball to right field. Armas drifting into his right. Flips the glasses down. He's got it and there's one up.
- 1:21:38Now before Blue Whitaker bats lets pause for station identification. This is the Detroit Tiger Baseball Network.
- 1:21:44This is AM 76. The great voice of the Great Lakes and the flagship station for the Detroit Tigers. WJR Detroit.
- 1:21:59Wayne Gross inside at third. The pitch to Whitaker. He swings and misses.
- 1:22:04Lew doubled over the head of Ricky Henderson his last time up. One for two today. Keough working quickly comes back and it's in for a strike.
- 1:22:16Whitaker short and ran up at it and then just kind of faded away but it was right through the heart of the play.
- 1:22:23Two strikes on Lew. Now the pitch from Keough. He wastes one outside.
- 1:22:42One to pitch to Whitaker. Fouled back over the screen into the stands.
- 1:22:47One out nobody on here on the Tiger fifth inning. The Tigers moving on up the coast of Seattle tonight.
- 1:22:53They'll start a four game series in the Kingdom on Thursday night. We'll be on the air.
- 1:22:58Let's see the first three nights at 10 15 and I think it's a half hour earlier on Sunday at 9 45 Michigan time.
- 1:23:06Whitaker takes it outside two and two on Lew. Keough delivers. There's a punch to left foul back into the stands.
- 1:23:21He just reached out. Chopped at it. Remains two balls two strikes on Sweet Lew.
- 1:23:38Keough winds and delivers. There's another fly to left. It'll be foul and in the bullpen into the stands.
- 1:23:44Good catch by the man down in the corner. The A's have got some sore arms right now.
- 1:23:51We're talking about Jeff Jones heading today to Minneapolis to get a shot from Dr. O'Faylon there.
- 1:23:57And Mike Norris has an ailing shoulder. He's going down to Los Angeles to confer with Dr. Job.
- 1:24:05Swung on a high fly ball down the left field line. Left fielder Henderson in foul territory there. Makes the catch.
- 1:24:13Now Gross and Stanley and Henderson converge down that there are two down.
- 1:24:20And that brings up Glenn Wilson. Glenn is hit with two trips first time up.
- 1:24:25He had a screaming line drive right at the middle of Gross's third base.
- 1:24:30Glenn has hit safely in 11 straight games now and in 15 of his last 16.
- 1:24:40Keough ready to work. Play first pitch to Wilson. Swung on line drive right field. A base hit for Wilson. He keeps the streak going.
- 1:24:49Glenn is on with two out here in the Tiger fifth inning.
- 1:24:53Hit number five for the Tigers. That'll bring up Larry Herndon who's one for two.
- 1:25:01The Tigers will see the A's when they're back home next.
- 1:25:08Next Tuesday the Tigers begin a week long home stand.
- 1:25:12Three straight night games Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday against the Angels and the A's are in Friday night, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
- 1:25:19Herndon takes a low one from Keough.
- 1:25:22And for the opener of that series with the A's Friday, September 3rd.
- 1:25:29We'll have the chicken on our side.
- 1:25:31The A's will have the chicken on theirs and Fred Stanley.
- 1:25:35Now the pitch from Keough. Ground ball to Stanley. He underhands to Mopes for the fourth and second.
- 1:25:40That's all for the Tigers. No runs to hit the man left. After four and a half it's still the A's three. Tigers nothing.
- 1:25:49People who run in marathons are like highly tuned machines. They train, build their stamina, push themselves to the limit.
- 1:25:57They experience great physical stress. Rather like your car engine does.
- 1:26:02To help in all this they often have a special diet.
- 1:26:06At Marathon we understand this phenomenon and we've come up with a special diet for your automobile.
- 1:26:12It's called Marathon gasoline.
- 1:26:15You see all Marathon branded gasoline's have a very special additive that's injected in each delivery.
- 1:26:22This additive gives better mileage, lowers engine repair bills and cuts down on engine wear.
- 1:26:28Your Marathon man wants your automobile to win over the long haul.
- 1:26:33Treat your automobile to our special diet. It won't lose weight but it'll sure feel a lot better.
- 1:26:40Be a winner. Be a Marathoner. Marathon. Best in the long run.
- 1:26:47Win a 1982 Chevette. Play Tiger Chevrolet Grand Slam Cleanup.
- 1:26:51Pick up an entry in contest rules at any Metro Detroit Chevy dealer. No purchase necessary.
- 1:26:55If you're a licensed driver, 18 or over, just complete the entry and call with your selection of the Tiger inning for a Grand Slam home run.
- 1:27:01Between now and September 22nd a name will be drawn and announced on the air before each Tiger game.
- 1:27:06If a Tiger hits a Grand Slam during the inning named on the selected entry, he or she wins a new Chevette.
- 1:27:10Other prizes include a World Series trip, $100 cash and Tiger tickets.
- 1:27:15For the Grand Slam cleanup, enter now at your Metro Detroit Chevy dealers.
- 1:27:29Mike Heath will be stepping in to lead it off for the A's here in the fifth inning. Mike walked his first time up.
- 1:27:36Jerry Euger trailing 3-0 as a result of his own wildness in the first inning.
- 1:27:51He walked five and had one wild pitch and has struck out four, including the last three in a row. There's a wide one to Heath.
- 1:28:07Now Jerry into the motion, he kicks and fires. There's a base hit to right field.
- 1:28:12There's a hole between Whitaker and Leigh. Sharp play and one hop out of the infield.
- 1:28:17That's the first hit of the ball game for the A's.
- 1:28:29That'll bring up Fred Stanley with Ricky Henderson on deck. Stanley struck out his only time up.
- 1:28:42The bell sneaking in looking for the bunt. Here's a stretch by Euger.
- 1:28:47And the pitch he squares the bunt, takes it low and outside.
- 1:28:50Some of the folks around Oakland here were kind of perturbed and mad at Fred Stanley because he'd been getting some hits lately.
- 1:28:57As the number nine man of the batting order and getting on first base.
- 1:29:01He'd been walking and getting some hits and they didn't like that out of their number nine man because that clogged up the base pass in front of Ricky Henderson if he should get on.
- 1:29:11Here's the stretch by Euger. He goes to first base sending Heath back.
- 1:29:31Euger taking a little more time now. Right hand hitting Stanley waiting at the plate. Here's the pitch. He squares and bumps it foul down the first baseline.
- 1:29:45Jack Morris goes in the opener Thursday night at the Kingdome against Mike Moore.
- 1:29:52And I see Gaylord again this time around. He got called last night and was ejected from the ballgame by Plain Empire Dave Phillips for the alleged use of a spitter.
- 1:30:12I wonder where he got that idea. Now the set. They whooped the hole. Now the 1-1 pitch and it's low to Heath.
- 1:30:22Two and one on Mike. I beg your pardon on Stanley. Heath at first base after a base hit.
- 1:30:39The lead here in the bottom of the fifth. Little toss to first again.
- 1:30:53Outfield straight up on Stanley and not very deep. Here's the set. Now they throw the first. Leech was coming off the bag.
- 1:31:03Jackie Moore the first base coach out to have a word with the runner Heath. Jackie Brown I should say.
- 1:31:17There goes the runner. It's fouled back into the stand.
- 1:31:22I was right the first time. One time Tiger.
- 1:31:41So at the count of two balls two strikes Stanley swinging away on that 2-1 delivery. As they sent Heath let's see what happens here.
- 1:31:53Stretched by Uger. The runner goes the pitches popped in the air foul off first base. Leech chasing still racing after it.
- 1:32:02He makes a fine catch and then turns around to take a look to see what happened to Heath and he got back to the bag at first.
- 1:32:10A good over the shoulder catch by Leech. Well off first base and foul ground.
- 1:32:19Now that brings up Ricky Henderson. Henderson with two steals today in the first inning is one hundred sixteenth and one hundred seventeenth.
- 1:32:28Needs one to tie. Lugrock's record.
- 1:32:36Uger retired him on a foul fly to right his last time up.
- 1:32:46Heath is at first base with one up.
- 1:32:54Uger working from the stretch goes to first driving Heath back.
- 1:33:10Henderson swinging the bat starts to get into that lean back crotch of his.
- 1:33:16Here's the set the pitch to him swung on a five ball to center field should be caught Wilson with the glasses down looking up into that tough sky makes the catch.
- 1:33:25And Henderson is retired this time around as Heath is still at first base two out.
- 1:33:37The batter now Wayne Groves who has walked and fly to center. He's got all three runs on the first inning.
- 1:33:46Uger walked Henderson who stole second. Walked Groves.
- 1:33:52And they pulled a double steal two steals for Henderson. He scored on a wild pitch by Uger who walked Murphy who stole second.
- 1:34:00A bounce off the sacrifice fly getting in a couple of runs in addition to the wild pitch scoring one.
- 1:34:14Here's a stretch by Uger and the pitch to Groves hits a pitch out but no movement at first by Heath.
- 1:34:23In the second inning Heath walked and stole second.
- 1:34:30Bay he cut down Murphy attempting to steal in the third inning.
- 1:34:41Jerry delivers check swing at the call strike on Wayne Groves.
- 1:34:48Wayne was involved in the little melee the angels and A's had a week or so ago.
- 1:35:04Uger checking the runner the pitch to Groves swung on there's a high fly ball the right field not deep Jones over toward the line makes the catch.
- 1:35:13That's all for the A's no runs a hit the man left after five innings A's three Tigers nothing.

- 1:37:11Keough has managed to work out of some difficulties and for the five innings so far today set down the Tigers in order only in the first inning.
- 1:37:21There's Mike Ivy who has singled and hit the pop light a right.
- 1:37:30Trying to buy key all the pitch for the Tigers D.H. is in the dirt skips past he.
- 1:37:46Ivy hitting 232.
- 1:37:49I pitched to him half swing. Did he go. They appeal said no.
- 1:37:57The
- 1:37:59right side of the infield now Larry Barnett taking the rest of the day off.
- 1:38:02Derwood Merrill is over on the left and Mike Riley behind the plate.
- 1:38:06First time we've had a chance to see Rocky the season.
- 1:38:10From one team to another high fly ball left to center field Murphy is right there.
- 1:38:15Wait. He's got it. And there's one.
- 1:38:23It's going to be an important month in the life of Ricky Henderson certainly the month of August.
- 1:38:29I don't think you can play anybody ever had a month like one tiger did.
- 1:38:33Rudy York still holds the record for the most home runs in a single month.
- 1:38:39He hit 18 in the month of August and his rookie season back in 1937.
- 1:38:45What a month for Rudy Cabell ducks out of the way of a fastball.
- 1:38:51In that month of August 1937 York did not even get into the starting lineup until the fourth day of the month and hit 18 home runs.
- 1:39:03Drove in 49 runs in 30 games in that month.
- 1:39:07Cabell swings and pops a foul off first base Meyer chasing down toward the bullpen still raising.
- 1:39:12He can't catch up to it.
- 1:39:17Looking at York's record for the month of August in 1937 49 RBI.
- 1:39:23He hit 360 scored 27 times.
- 1:39:27He had four doubles and two triples slugging average for the month.
- 1:39:33Point eight nine five.
- 1:39:40One out. Nobody out on the tiger six Cabell swings a bouncer to gross at third.
- 1:39:44Good leap came down with it goes the first Cabell is retired.
- 1:39:54Brings up Rick Leach.
- 1:40:00Leach has struck out and walked.
- 1:40:04Tigers with five hits by five different batters.
- 1:40:07Whitaker has a double Wilson a single Herndon a single Ivy a single and Jones a single.
- 1:40:15Keough kicks and fires and it's on the corner strike one called on Leach.
- 1:40:30The motion Keough delivers there's a fly ball the left field down the line long run for Henderson he's getting there near the line makes the catch.
- 1:40:38And the Tigers are out in order in the sixth inning after five and a half still Oakland free Detroit nothing.

- 1:48:30Did you know the steel chainsaw
- 1:48:32the largest selling chainsaw in
- 1:48:33the world.
- 1:48:34That's because it's the best you
- 1:48:35can buy and because there's a
- 1:48:37steel dealer who stands behind
- 1:48:38every chainsaw sold.
- 1:48:40So for a chainsaw or we'd
- 1:48:41prefer to see your steel dealer.
- 1:48:43He's in the yellow pages under
- 1:48:44saw if that's the largest selling
- 1:48:46heart of work in cutting
- 1:48:48machines and that can only mean
- 1:48:50that's right.
- 1:48:51It's a chainsaw from steel
- 1:48:53doesn't work that hard.
- 1:49:01It's Farmer Jack savings time
- 1:49:02time to save on grade A backs on
- 1:49:04frying chicken legs just forty

- 1:49:08I'm not sure if I'm going to
- 1:49:10be able to get a little bit of
- 1:49:11a better shot.
- 1:49:16We can all go right.
- 1:49:17Right builder.
- 1:49:18I'm at Keough with nine complete
- 1:49:20games so far this season for the
- 1:49:22A's has been able to hold off
- 1:49:25the Tigers through the first six
- 1:49:26innings while he got a three run
- 1:49:28lead in the first it's still a
- 1:49:29three to nothing Oakland lead as
- 1:49:32we move to the seventh inning
- 1:49:33and back to the play by play.
- 1:49:34Here's Ernie Harwell.
- 1:49:35Thanks Paul.
- 1:49:36I get everybody the right hand
- 1:49:37and I think that's a strike
- 1:49:38called the seventh inning getting
- 1:49:40started.
- 1:49:41Now the Tigers have five hits
- 1:49:43they've had ahead of everything
- 1:49:44except the first one in the sixth
- 1:49:46inning in too close.
- 1:49:48He almost hit him one and one
- 1:49:49the count on Jones and they had
- 1:49:51one big threat.
- 1:49:52They loaded the bases on the
- 1:49:53fourth with two out and play.
- 1:49:55He retired when he had a three
- 1:49:56to pick to left field.
- 1:50:00Otherwise he had it pretty much
- 1:50:02under control.
- 1:50:03Matt Keough working with a three
- 1:50:04nothing lead.
- 1:50:06Jones that they line drive to
- 1:50:08left the base it fielded by the
- 1:50:10left field ahead of him and for
- 1:50:12the second straight game.
- 1:50:13Jones has two for two against
- 1:50:15this Oakland pitching.
- 1:50:17He's the only Tiger with two
- 1:50:18hits today.
- 1:50:19The others belong what a piece
- 1:50:20the Whitaker Wilson Herndon and
- 1:50:23Ivey they are the first born the
- 1:50:25Tiger batting order.
- 1:50:26Here comes a pay heat of the
- 1:50:27plate.
- 1:50:28He has got over to his bow the
- 1:50:30first and find it out.
- 1:50:32You'll be followed by travel.
- 1:50:34The infield is halfway up.
- 1:50:36They've got Meyer not holding on
- 1:50:38the bag with Jones at first base
- 1:50:41three nothing Oakland the Tigers
- 1:50:43batting in the seventh inning.
- 1:50:44There's a ball low it bounces out
- 1:50:46in front almost to the mound
- 1:50:47picked up by the pitcher.
- 1:50:49He oh he's back and not in time
- 1:50:51to Stanley and they almost got
- 1:50:54Jones.
- 1:50:55I'm sorry.
- 1:50:56Yeah.
- 1:50:57Get the second.
- 1:50:58I was a weird one.
- 1:50:59I hit in front of Heath and hit
- 1:51:01his shin guard or something.
- 1:51:03He popped out the out near the
- 1:51:05mound.
- 1:51:06He all the former infielder made
- 1:51:08a good throw and almost got him
- 1:51:09a second ball on the count on
- 1:51:13Bill Fahey outfield is straight
- 1:51:16up punching toward the middle on
- 1:51:18Bill Jones coming down the line
- 1:51:20from second base three nothing
- 1:51:21Oakland leading seven inning.
- 1:51:22They got all three of their runs
- 1:51:24up you during the opening inning
- 1:51:26three men walked and all three
- 1:51:28scored here's the pitch it is a
- 1:51:29strike call also in that inning
- 1:51:32that's a little bit of a
- 1:51:33benefit Ricky Henderson picked
- 1:51:36up two more stolen bases and now
- 1:51:39needs only one to tie the record
- 1:51:40of Lube Rock.
- 1:51:44Here's the set of the one one
- 1:51:46pitch is very wide to play he
- 1:51:48two balls and a strike and he
- 1:51:51wants a conference for this
- 1:51:52pitcher Mark and Chuck away from
- 1:51:57Sunnyvale California long time
- 1:51:59Tiger fan who used to live in
- 1:52:01the area and he is a hero in
- 1:52:03action so far they've not been
- 1:52:06able to get a run in they have
- 1:52:07left the six runners on the
- 1:52:09bases three of them in the one
- 1:52:11inning conferences over ready
- 1:52:16for action again it is a two one
- 1:52:18pitch to pay he takes a wide
- 1:52:21the fastball low on a three and
- 1:52:23one the count on Bill he or other
- 1:52:30quick worker come back and this
- 1:52:32one is a hit foul out of play in
- 1:52:34the third base side gentleman
- 1:52:41from Ben Mateo got that one on
- 1:52:43the first half both count on
- 1:52:48Fahey man on second Jones he
- 1:52:51led up with a single took second
- 1:52:52on the wild pitch here's the
- 1:52:53pitch Fahey swings as they fly
- 1:52:55ball to the right armistice
- 1:52:57there gloves it John sag heads
- 1:52:59the third is a throw by armistice
- 1:53:01to the growth not in time it
- 1:53:02bounced away from growth Jones
- 1:53:04starts the home and then jacked
- 1:53:05back as the pitcher Keough did a
- 1:53:08good backup job at third base
- 1:53:13they're throwing the ball to
- 1:53:14second claiming that Jones left
- 1:53:17too early low that takes the
- 1:53:19throw but the umpire says nope
- 1:53:21he did not go rocky road came
- 1:53:24down to make the call well the
- 1:53:26Tigers have one out of man at
- 1:53:28third and the better will be
- 1:53:29travel Alan is bounce the short
- 1:53:37and the flight of right field so
- 1:53:38far nothing Oakland has the
- 1:53:43three Tigers are trying to get
- 1:53:45back in this one on the seventh
- 1:53:46inning I'll feel the left on
- 1:53:48travel Jones off the bag at
- 1:53:50third let's see how Keough will
- 1:53:52work whether he'll go to the
- 1:53:53wind up yet he will not work to
- 1:53:55a set position he'll wind and
- 1:53:56then here's the wind up and
- 1:53:58here's the pit it is a ball in
- 1:54:00too close on travel right hand
- 1:54:11already pitches again and travel

- 1:57:25Hope run leading the Tigers
- 1:57:27three nothing the A's are coming
- 1:57:28back down the back of the inning
- 1:57:30you have the best of the strong
- 1:57:32game he had a lot of problems in
- 1:57:34the opening and he walked the
- 1:57:35first three men and all three
- 1:57:37scored since then he's given up
- 1:57:40a couple of walks but he's about
- 1:57:42only one single throughout the
- 1:57:43whole game and he has now struck
- 1:57:46out sick he struck out the side
- 1:57:48in the fourth inning and struck
- 1:57:50out two in the sixth inning his
- 1:57:53first strikeout had come in the
- 1:57:54second inning now Davey Lopes the
- 1:57:57veteran infielder will be the
- 1:57:58first man to face him in the
- 1:58:00seventh one other game this
- 1:58:03afternoon the major leagues in
- 1:58:04the National League the Cubs beat
- 1:58:05San Francisco Giants that's too
- 1:58:07straightforward them over the
- 1:58:08Giants they want it this
- 1:58:10afternoon at Wrigley Field 8 to
- 1:58:114 he is low and the right hand
- 1:58:14batters playing a long time left
- 1:58:17going back to the fence you'll
- 1:58:18have room he makes the catch
- 1:58:20about four feet in front of the
- 1:58:21fence one pitch and one down in
- 1:58:25the Oakland seventh inning
- 1:58:29Mitchell page will be the next
- 1:58:30man to bat left hand about it
- 1:58:36with a fly to right field and a
- 1:58:38strikeout as his record so far
- 1:58:42three runs one hit broke when
- 1:58:44they've made no errors the
- 1:58:45Tigers have no runs and six hits
- 1:58:51there's a foul that'll reach the
- 1:58:53seats on the third base side
- 1:58:58might he's waiting on deck
- 1:59:04page stands deep in the batters
- 1:59:06box better than he is the motion
- 1:59:09by Jerry you're doing he pitches
- 1:59:11it is a fastball outside one and
- 1:59:13one the count on him there's a
- 1:59:23drive to left and it'll be in
- 1:59:24for a hit the second hit off
- 1:59:25you just pages on with a single
- 1:59:31hit it'll bring up here who had
- 1:59:35the first hit he's also had a
- 1:59:37walk he likes the pitch inside
- 1:59:43basically a high fastball hitters
- 1:59:46Tigers try to pitch him long
- 1:59:47away majority of the major league
- 1:59:51hitters are fastball hitters and
- 1:59:53high ball hitters you find a
- 1:59:58batter in the majors that likes
- 2:00:00to pitch low pitch he is usually
- 2:00:02a left hand batter that's not
- 2:00:06absolute but it's a sort of a
- 2:00:10general rule here is the set now
- 2:00:12by you do the right hander
- 2:00:13delivers and the pitches into
- 2:00:15close ball one passionate and
- 2:00:25under one the one of each
- 2:00:26throwing in the Detroit bullpen
- 2:00:29and the double play depth against
- 2:00:30Keith three nothing Oakland
- 2:00:33league Tigers trying to get back
- 2:00:36in this one but Oakland batting
- 2:00:37now in the last half of the
- 2:00:38seventh they pitch his swing on
- 2:00:40hit the cabal so the vertical
- 2:00:42one relay to late you two for
- 2:00:44the price of one for the Tigers
- 2:00:46on the side out no runs one hit
- 2:00:47no errors and nobody left and at
- 2:00:49the end of seven it is Oakland
- 2:00:51three Tigers nothing does the
- 2:00:53word that mean anything to you
- 2:00:55no it's not how a baby chick gets
- 2:00:57born actually that is an
- 2:00:59accumulation of undecompo
- 2:01:01parts and other debris that can
- 2:01:02choke along the deck what it does
- 2:01:05is keep the rain air and
- 2:01:06fertilizer from getting down to
- 2:01:08the root system of your grass now
- 2:01:10we wouldn't bring up this nasty
- 2:01:11problem if your local snapper
- 2:01:13dealer didn't have a pleasant way
- 2:01:14to remove that a lot more
- 2:01:16pleasant than messing up your lawn
- 2:01:18with a power rake or messing up
- 2:01:20your back with a hand right the
- 2:01:22solution is the snapper high back
- 2:01:23lawn machine with the economical
- 2:01:25thatcher eyes or attachment the
- 2:01:27thatcher eyes are simply plucks

- 2:02:39Kaufman of it's the fatty Michigan
- 2:02:41out to see the Tigers in action and
- 2:02:43also Dennis and and the mayor who
- 2:02:45hail from Muskegon and Detroit and
- 2:02:48East Lansing Glenn Wilson or laid it
- 2:02:57off he has kept his hitting streak
- 2:02:59alive with one for three this
- 2:03:00afternoon a single his third time at
- 2:03:03bat prior that he had lined a third
- 2:03:05and struck out now faces a light handed
- 2:03:08Wilson Herndon and I've had to try to
- 2:03:11get it going the Tigers need pretty
- 2:03:13tight here in the eighth inning
- 2:03:15strange and totals right now no runs in
- 2:03:18six hits and nowhere to Detroit three
- 2:03:20runs and two hits for Oakland and no
- 2:03:22errors there's a curve into close he
- 2:03:25spins out of the way ball on the count
- 2:03:28on young Mr. Wilson batting three twenty
- 2:03:34six he hits a foul down the first base
- 2:03:37side coming over his teeth and the
- 2:03:40catcher makes the cap play 19 of his
- 2:03:54last 20 game here's Lance Perry
- 2:03:58I'm sad three hits last night Perry
- 2:04:10has been really jumping up into the
- 2:04:12leaderboard and plugging percentage he
- 2:04:14ranked third in the league now Tigers
- 2:04:21have their leadoff man on for the first
- 2:04:23time in the game the pitch to Perry
- 2:04:25one he struck out for Tigers have been
- 2:04:29a done a good bit of first ball hitting
- 2:04:32against him is a high fly to right
- 2:04:42should be caught harmless to his
- 2:04:44website he makes the catch dog had to
- 2:04:48play it side saddle because of that
- 2:04:50bright sun no clouds out there to act
- 2:04:52his background with a fly ball doing
- 2:04:54down nobody on in the Tiger eight
- 2:04:56here comes Ivey he picked up the first
- 2:04:58Tiger hit with a single in the second
- 2:05:00then flat out the next two times
- 2:05:12right hand standing deep the outfield
- 2:05:14pulled around the left on Mike three
- 2:05:16nothing Oakland leads in the eighth
- 2:05:18inning and he swings as a slow roller
- 2:05:20hit to the glove side of the shortstop
- 2:05:22family guns it over the first and the
- 2:05:24Tigers around one two three in the
- 2:05:26eighth inning Oakland comes to that in
- 2:05:28their eighth they make Detroit three
- 2:05:30nothing in times like these while you're

- 2:07:10You're on the mound right at the face of
- 2:07:12Fred Stanley who lead off the Oakland 8
- 2:07:14bidding Fred has got open two then
- 2:07:16Ricky Henderson and Wayne Gross will
- 2:07:18follow Billy Martin has his bullpen busy
- 2:07:22the left hander Tom Underwood and the
- 2:07:24right hander Brian Kingman throwing
- 2:07:26down there three runs in the opening
- 2:07:31inning for Oakland they scored on three
- 2:07:33walks all three men who drew a base on
- 2:07:36balls came in to score and that's the
- 2:07:38story of the game the pitch to Stanley's
- 2:07:40of all though Henderson picked up two
- 2:07:43steals in that first inning now has a
- 2:07:46hundred and seventeen one short of the
- 2:07:48all time mark you're ready to go to work
- 2:07:52the pitch to Stanley is a wide one ball
- 2:07:56to do it all on Fred 17,000 and 98
- 2:08:01paying to see this one
- 2:08:0617,000 and 98 that's the pay to fish in
- 2:08:09the Coliseum this afternoon bright and
- 2:08:11sunny here's a wide one ball three to
- 2:08:15Stanley the crowd doesn't like this they
- 2:08:18know that Henderson coming up next they
- 2:08:21don't want any and had a month on the
- 2:08:25bases in front of him here's the wind up
- 2:08:27by you and Stanley takes the ball all he
- 2:08:31wants
- 2:08:32that is the sixth walk of the year
- 2:08:36just three of them came in the first
- 2:08:41inning Billy Martin might be in the
- 2:08:45Ricky Henderson here Billy Martin might
- 2:08:49be in for Ricky Henderson that would
- 2:08:52be quite a move would probably just
- 2:08:56take Billy and throw him in the base
- 2:08:58if he did that he is Ricky at the plate
- 2:09:02now he has a walk a found out the right
- 2:09:05flight at center field he has stolen
- 2:09:08two bases red family at first base
- 2:09:11Henderson waiting at the plate and the
- 2:09:14pitch is a ball in too close up the
- 2:09:17middle pay he say he goes out the
- 2:09:20top of the injured through the
- 2:09:25baseball history throughout most of
- 2:09:29baseball history the base on balls has
- 2:09:31not counted as a time is bad the batter
- 2:09:34was first exempted from the time it's
- 2:09:36bad on the walk in 1877 right after the
- 2:09:40nationally got started and then 10 years
- 2:09:44later in 1887 a base on balls counted as
- 2:09:47a hit and there were there was a record
- 2:09:51number of 400 hitters that year you might
- 2:09:53imagine Henderson has over 100 walks
- 2:09:57already he is a bit there goes family
- 2:10:00there's a line back to the field base
- 2:10:02here Henderson feels it on one out
- 2:10:04family stuff the second to win on
- 2:10:07nobody down hit and run single and
- 2:10:11Henderson is one to last now gross will
- 2:10:17be the better three nothing off one
- 2:10:26they're batting in the evening they've
- 2:10:28got running that first and second and
- 2:10:30nobody down this crowd getting a little
- 2:10:39excited in field about halfway up
- 2:10:49growth stepping into the batter's box
- 2:10:51he's walked and flat out twice one of
- 2:10:55the three who scored a run in the
- 2:10:57opening three nothing Oakland and me
- 2:10:59eight walking a single setting up this
- 2:11:02scoring chance for the A's outfield is
- 2:11:05deep and straight away on growth you
- 2:11:09get a load of his pitching face at the
- 2:11:12mound he said to the photo second I've
- 2:11:19got family in a pick off Henderson not
- 2:11:22going anywhere and now Cabell's not a
- 2:11:26run to back and the winner connects
- 2:11:28the tag from a six family off and that
- 2:11:30opens up the gate for Ricky Henderson
- 2:11:38one to six to five to four so Henderson
- 2:11:54now has a chance to tie the record here
- 2:11:56in the eighth inning Oakland batting
- 2:11:59with a man on that Henderson at first
- 2:12:01base one man down way and growth at the
- 2:12:06plate the outfield is straight up
- 2:12:08here comes Roger Craig out he wants to
- 2:12:11come
- 2:12:15Billy Martin has come out of his dugout
- 2:12:20and as motioned over to his first base
- 2:12:23coach Jackie Moore to come in and talk
- 2:12:26with him there's a slight aroma
- 2:12:29emanating from the diamond Ernie on
- 2:12:31that last play Stanley did very little
- 2:12:35jockeying Henderson made no attempt to
- 2:12:38advance but it did clear the path down
- 2:12:42there ahead of him and another thing
- 2:12:45Cabell didn't look like he was too
- 2:12:47anxious to throw that ball and make the
- 2:12:49put up family off right so it was going
- 2:12:52on both sides but they set up what they
- 2:12:56wanted I guess the A's did and that
- 2:12:59makes any situation well all the
- 2:13:04conferring has been concluded and we are
- 2:13:08ready for action on the diamond Henderson
- 2:13:10is at first base he needs the one stolen
- 2:13:14base to tie the record I'll move rock
- 2:13:17and you're ready to pitch to him Ricky
- 2:13:23has a lead here's the set he draws a
- 2:13:27throw he's back there
- 2:13:38Wayne growth digging in Ricky Henderson
- 2:13:40draws another throw this is a low one
- 2:13:42and a good pick up by me he almost threw
- 2:13:44that one away so all the eyes are focused
- 2:13:47on Ricky Henderson play nothing the
- 2:13:49Oakland A's lead the Tigers in the
- 2:13:51evening one man out Henderson trying to
- 2:13:53get a longer lead at first base and
- 2:13:56toward the second another foot here's the
- 2:13:59set you hold it there's another throw to
- 2:14:02first he's back safe
- 2:14:08and Wayne growth steps out of the
- 2:14:09batter's box outfield is straight up on
- 2:14:14growth and deep Henderson edging off
- 2:14:18again a longer lead for Ricky is the set
- 2:14:24by the right hander you just there he
- 2:14:27goes a pitch out here's a throw he
- 2:14:29slides he is out at second base baby
- 2:14:33cutting down and Ricky Henderson
- 2:14:35disagreeing with the call by the umpire
- 2:14:39there was Merrill but he is out he did
- 2:14:42not tie the record on that one
- 2:14:46satisfying play of the game right there
- 2:14:51Ricky walking out second field is
- 2:14:53building the call with their own
- 2:14:55Merrill is umpiring now back a third
- 2:15:09in his forensic
- 2:15:12he's going at it pretty hot and heavy
- 2:15:14W.F. on his show for a gang now
- 2:15:17their man Henderson has been cut down he
- 2:15:20did not tie the record here this
- 2:15:22afternoon at least not for now
- 2:15:25Martin has a few more words to say to
- 2:15:28the Texans
- 2:15:29Gerard Merrill and now walks away back
- 2:15:31to his dugout
- 2:15:36yeah that's the new record he's been
- 2:15:38caught 39 times already
- 2:15:41so he was trying to tie Lou Brock and
- 2:15:44he beat Tycon
- 2:15:52you out in the eighth inning and they
- 2:15:54wind up by you Joe Gross takes that it
- 2:15:57is a ball though so the little cameo
- 2:16:01performance is over for the moment and
- 2:16:04we go back to the big action of the
- 2:16:06ballgame the wind up by you do the
- 2:16:08pitch is a ball outside three at all
- 2:16:12the count on growth
- 2:16:23do down nobody on here's the motion by
- 2:16:25you just and the growth Texas strike
- 2:16:36Jerry ready again wide and deals
- 2:16:38growth takes it is low he walked in
- 2:16:43the second walk of the sitting
- 2:16:49number seven of the game on future
- 2:16:55and Murphy will be the next man to match
- 2:16:57for the Oakland
- 2:17:13late holding on the bag with Wayne
- 2:17:15Gross here's the death by Jerry Murphy
- 2:17:19it's a fly ball to the right it's fairly
- 2:17:21deep Jones goes back and makes it over
- 2:17:23the shoulder catch to retire the side
- 2:17:26no runs one hit a couple of walks no
- 2:17:29errors one man left to go to the ninth
- 2:17:31inning Oakland three Detroit nothing

- 2:19:16Rapids more excitement at the Coliseum
- 2:19:20while we're away there Murphy the
- 2:19:22outfield is set something to do with
- 2:19:24Merrill
- 2:19:28and then Billy Martin got the same treatment
- 2:19:32Billy has been tossed out now they
- 2:19:35various members of the A's from their
- 2:19:38dugout throwing object out toward Merrill
- 2:19:42who's at third base and he's coming into
- 2:19:44the dugout and see what he can do
- 2:19:46so it's not over yet
- 2:19:48Boya the coach has come up the dugout
- 2:19:50steps he's trying to calm them down a
- 2:19:52little bit and here comes their own
- 2:19:54Merrill and talking with Boya
- 2:19:57Rocky roll one of the other umpires
- 2:19:59coming in and a third umpire Riley
- 2:20:02comes in Murphy was given the thumb
- 2:20:05he's not left the area now he is going
- 2:20:07into the they don't have a tunnel here
- 2:20:10they have an exit that is on the
- 2:20:12surface and you can see him come into
- 2:20:14that exit way and head for the tunnel
- 2:20:16and then the comma
- 2:20:23now most of the A's have gone back to
- 2:20:25their fielding position
- 2:20:29all this stemming from the caught
- 2:20:34stealing of Henderson in the last
- 2:20:39inning we're going to have some
- 2:20:41changes in the outfield
- 2:20:46McKay is going to go to play second
- 2:20:48base and Lowe is going to play center
- 2:20:50field I think yeah that's right
- 2:20:54Lowe is in center Henderson stays in
- 2:20:56left Armistead right
- 2:21:00and McKay takes Lowe's place at
- 2:21:02second base
- 2:21:06Murphy was the first one apparently
- 2:21:08when he went out to a center field he
- 2:21:10said something to do with Merrill as he
- 2:21:12passed him and then offended Mr.
- 2:21:14Merrill and he gave Murphy the thumb
- 2:21:17and then the Billy Martin came out and
- 2:21:19he was really angry he began to jump up
- 2:21:22take his cap off and go through all
- 2:21:24kind of gestures and the Merrill gave it
- 2:21:26to Billy too and he has left the
- 2:21:28front of the right now for station
- 2:21:32identification this is a Detroit Tiger
- 2:21:34made sport ever this is the 50,000 watt
- 2:21:36voice of the Great Lakes and the
- 2:21:38flagship station for the Detroit Tigers
- 2:21:40you're listening to AM 76 wjr Detroit
- 2:21:5470 A's are still up on the top dugout
- 2:21:56staff yelling out to a door with
- 2:21:58Merrill Kingman is falling in the
- 2:22:00bullpen as we get ready for the
- 2:22:02night that he was three runs in the
- 2:22:04opening inning on three walks those
- 2:22:07stolen bases two of them by
- 2:22:08Henderson has a three nothing lead
- 2:22:11trying to even the series and
- 2:22:13Cabell will lead it off against
- 2:22:15Keogh so far has blanked the
- 2:22:18Tigers you know waiting on the
- 2:22:21first pitch and here it comes he
- 2:22:23takes it for a strike he has topped
- 2:22:25the second struck out and bounced
- 2:22:27the third over three for the Tigers
- 2:22:29third baseman today there's a slow
- 2:22:32pitch into close one and one on
- 2:22:34Cabell after Cabell and it'll be
- 2:22:36late to then Jones Keogh coming
- 2:22:39right back fire there's a bounding
- 2:22:41ball to third a gross has an easy
- 2:22:43chance so the buyer he got him one
- 2:22:46away and the last six and seven
- 2:22:50have gone down in a row against
- 2:22:52the slants of Keogh since the
- 2:22:55single by Jones and started the
- 2:22:57seventh inning here's late he
- 2:22:59struck out walked in five to left
- 2:23:14there's a strike call a breaking
- 2:23:16ball over
- 2:23:17the third outfield slam in the
- 2:23:23right on Rick and the infielding
- 2:23:26back except for gross at third
- 2:23:28and the left hand about it takes
- 2:23:29one in the dirt of the count even
- 2:23:32one and one three nothing Oakland
- 2:23:39you have allowed only three hits
- 2:23:41but Oakland got three runs without
- 2:23:43a hit in the first inning Leach
- 2:23:46swings to two balls on a strike
- 2:23:56Keogh end of action that it is
- 2:23:58Leach swings there's a fly ball
- 2:24:00that should be caught it in the
- 2:24:01center field look is there
- 2:24:03finding the sun makes the catch
- 2:24:05for the out and they are two down
- 2:24:07in the Tiger night
- 2:24:11Lane Jones head into fourth and
- 2:24:13then single the next two trips
- 2:24:14to put three
- 2:24:22you can hear some of the Oakland
- 2:24:24fans getting on Mr. Derwood
- 2:24:27Marrow the third base umpire
- 2:24:29here's the pitch to land it is a
- 2:24:32strike a hard flatter on the
- 2:24:34outside corner Oakland three
- 2:24:37Tigers nothing to do down on the
- 2:24:39Tiger night inning Keogh deals
- 2:24:41there's a fly ball to left it
- 2:24:43should end the game Henderson is

- 2:24:59some people say that all
- 2:25:00gasolines are created equal but
- 2:25:03when you buy gasoline at a
- 2:25:04Marathon service station you may
- 2:25:07be in for a surprise you see we
- 2:25:10have a special kind of fuel
- 2:25:12treatment that makes a whole lot
- 2:25:14of difference every time we
- 2:25:16deliver Marathon gasoline we
- 2:25:18inject a top quality fuel additive
- 2:25:21this additive gives Marathon
- 2:25:23customers better fuel economy a

- 2:25:57you may have thought of your
- 2:25:58friendly neighborhood Bonanza
- 2:25:59restaurant is just a great place
- 2:26:01for steak well we're certainly not
- 2:26:03going to argue with you about that
- 2:26:04they're proud of their sirloin and
- 2:26:06their T-bones and their rib eyes and
- 2:26:08their chopped steak but they also
- 2:26:09want you to know that Bonanza is a
- 2:26:11great place for shrimp and chicken
- 2:26:12and fish and barbecue ribs and great
- 2:26:15meals for the kids and our
- 2:26:16fresh tastic food bar that puts
- 2:26:18ordinary salad bars to shame so
- 2:26:20don't think of Bonanza as just a

- 2:26:24Bonanza as a great place to get a

- 2:26:28the A's wind up splitting with the
- 2:26:31Tigers in this short two game
- 2:26:33series by winning the second game
- 2:26:35here this afternoon three to
- 2:26:36nothing on a six hit shutout by
- 2:26:39Matt Keough Keough racking up his
- 2:26:4111th win of the year against 16
- 2:26:43losses but Jerry Uger allowed only
- 2:26:46three hits in the ballgame
- 2:26:48and the Tigers are in the lead
- 2:26:50by one to one and the Tigers are
- 2:26:52in the lead by one to one and the
- 2:26:54Tigers are in the lead by one to
- 2:26:56one and the Tigers are in the
- 2:26:58lead by one to one and the Tigers
- 2:27:00have three hits in the ballgame
- 2:27:03but his own wildness in the first
- 2:27:04inning was his undoing the
- 2:27:06scoring all three runs in the
- 2:27:08first without benefit of a hit
- 2:27:10and that proved to be enough as
- 2:27:12they won it three to nothing
- 2:27:13three runs three hits for Oakland
- 2:27:15no errors.
- 2:27:16They left three men on base.
- 2:27:18The Tigers had no runs six hits
- 2:27:20no errors and the Tigers left
- 2:27:22seven men on base.
- 2:27:24You're going the distance
- 2:27:25six, walked seven, including three walks in the first inning, and uncorked one wild pitch
- 2:27:31in the first.
- 2:27:32Akio went the distance for the tenth time this season and struck out four, walking one.
- 2:27:40The game took two hours, twenty-four minutes before 17,098 here at the Oakland Alameda
- 2:27:46County Coliseum.
- 2:27:47The big story, Ricky Henderson and his pursuit for the all-time base stealing record set
- 2:27:52by Lou Brock.
- 2:27:53He needed three coming into the ball game.
- 2:27:56He got two in the first inning and then was cut down in the eighth inning.
- 2:28:01A call that precipitated, a continuing argument resulting in the ejection of Henderson's outfield
- 2:28:09teammate, Duane Murphy, and manager Billy Martin as the Tigers came to bat in the ninth
- 2:28:14inning.
- 2:28:15I'll be back to recap the scoring and how it went here at Oakland in just a moment.

- 2:30:03Well, the story of this game really was written in the first inning, although there were some
- 2:30:09later episodes, but they did not really have anything to do with the eventual outcome of
- 2:30:13the contest.
- 2:30:14In the very first inning, rookie Henderson, the leadoff man for Oakland, came into the
- 2:30:18game with 115 stolen bases.
- 2:30:22He wanted to at least tie if not surpass Lou Brock's record of 118 stolen bases while the
- 2:30:29club was still at home because after this game today, Oakland goes on the road.
- 2:30:34Well, Henderson drew a walk from Jerry Euger to lead off the first inning.
- 2:30:39Euger just trying to work that outside part of the plate, didn't find it.
- 2:30:43Henderson gets on first base.
- 2:30:44Now Bill Fahey started behind the plate for the Tigers today because just prior to game
- 2:30:49time, Lance Parrish got the call from Detroit that his wife Arlyn was in labor and expected
- 2:30:56to produce their second child shortly.
- 2:30:59So Lance got out of his uniform, in the street clothes, and went to the airport to head back
- 2:31:05to Detroit.
- 2:31:06Well, Bill Fahey was called upon to help keep Henderson honest on the bases and it was up
- 2:31:12to Jerry Euger to help out too, but Jerry wound up walking Henderson right off the bat.
- 2:31:17Well, Henderson on the very first pitch to Wayne Gross took off and stole second base,
- 2:31:22number 116.
- 2:31:26Then Wayne Gross had a walk finished off to him.
- 2:31:29That put runners at first and second.
- 2:31:32And then they pulled the double steal.
- 2:31:35Henderson moving to third, Gross to second.
- 2:31:37So it was Henderson's 117th stolen base.
- 2:31:41With Dwayne Murphy at the plate, Euger, still wild, unable to get the ball in the strike
- 2:31:46zone, threw a wild pitch and that permitted Henderson to score the game's first run.
- 2:31:52Gross moved over to third on the wild pitch.
- 2:31:55Well, he finished off a walk to Murphy, three straight walks.
- 2:32:00And then Murphy stole second base.
- 2:32:05So that was the fourth steal of the inning.
- 2:32:07And Tony Armas had a grounded at tramily at only one play at first base.
- 2:32:12As Gross came in to score the second run, Murphy moving to third.
- 2:32:16And Danny Meyer came up, hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Murphy with the third run
- 2:32:21of the inning.
- 2:32:22Three runs in, no hits.
- 2:32:24Well, the A's wound up getting a single in the fifth inning from Mike Heath, a single
- 2:32:29in the seventh from Mitchell Page, and a single in the eighth from Henderson.
- 2:32:34And that was the other episode.
- 2:32:36With one out, with nobody out, Fred Stanley led off with a walk.
- 2:32:41Henderson singled him to second base.
- 2:32:44Then Stanley got picked off second base.
- 2:32:45That cleared the path for Henderson to try to tie the record of Lube Rock.
- 2:32:51Now he took off after several throws to first by Jerry Uger.
- 2:32:54And on a pitch out, Fay, he gunned him down.
- 2:32:57A very close play at second base.
- 2:32:58And the A's argued Henderson didn't believe he was out.
- 2:33:01Neither did Billy Martin, who came out for a little show then, came back into the dugout.
- 2:33:06Then as the Tigers came to bat in the ninth inning, Dwayne Murphy said something to Derwin
- 2:33:10Merrill, made the call at second base on his way to center field.
- 2:33:14And he was ejected from the ball game.
- 2:33:16Well, Martin came out and he got a ejection as well.
- 2:33:20He's quieted down and the Tigers went out one, two, three in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:33:25And the A's had won the ball game three to nothing.
- 2:33:27So Ricky Henderson is still one short of tying the record.
- 2:33:30And he'll go on the road.
- 2:33:32The A's now headed for Minnesota to, or rather for Milwaukee.
- 2:33:38And it is expected that Henderson would break the record there this weekend.
- 2:33:43But not against the Tigers this time.
- 2:33:47Tigers are off tomorrow.
- 2:33:48They're going to move up the coast to Seattle to open a four game series on Thursday night.
- 2:33:51So much for this game.
- 2:33:52I'll be back to check the scoreboard and schedule in just a moment after these messages.
- 2:33:56For 1982, Chevrolet has been selling more new trucks than anyone.
- 2:34:14And it's no wonder when you have a truck like the new size Chevy S-10.
- 2:34:18There's never been a truck like it before.
- 2:34:24Now during the Chevy truck sales drive, special incentives to dealers make possible savings
- 2:34:29of hundreds of dollars on U.S. 10 and Chevy love pickups.
- 2:34:33Plus full size C and K 10 and 20 pickups.
- 2:34:36You must take retail delivery by September 22nd.
- 2:34:39Check the savings now during the Chevy truck sales drive and you will see why.
- 2:34:44Once there was an oil company that had a big idea about a very good product.
- 2:35:04The name of the company was Marathon.
- 2:35:06And the name of the product was gasoline.
- 2:35:10The big idea was to give Marathon's customers something extra every time they visited a
- 2:35:16Marathon service station.
- 2:35:18The extra was the highest grade fuel additive available.
- 2:35:23They injected this long distance additive during every delivery to a Marathon service
- 2:35:28station.
- 2:35:29This long distance additive helped to give greater gasoline mileage, cleaner, smoother
- 2:35:34running engines and lower maintenance costs.
- 2:35:38Right when Marathon thinks big, it thinks big for its customers, not for itself.
- 2:35:44That way Marathon customers are happy customers.
- 2:35:47That's the big idea.
- 2:35:50Be a winner.
- 2:35:51Be a Marathoner.
- 2:35:52Marathon, best in the long run.
- 2:35:57Pretty much an off day in terms of day ball in the major leagues.
- 2:36:08One game in the American National League this afternoon at Wrigley Field.
- 2:36:11The Chicago Cubs spotted the Giants a three to nothing lead then rallied for five runs
- 2:36:16in the second inning.
- 2:36:17And the Cubs went on to beat San Francisco eight to four.
- 2:36:20Eight runs, ten hits, no errors for the Cubs.
- 2:36:22Four runs, six hits, two errors for the Giants.
- 2:36:25Perky Jenkins started and survived a shaky start.
- 2:36:28He went long enough into the eighth inning before giving way to Bill Campbell.
- 2:36:32And Jenkins got his ninth win against 13 defeats.
- 2:36:35Campbell earning his seventh save.
- 2:36:38Rich Gale was the San Francisco starter and the former royal didn't last long.
- 2:36:42He was relieved in the second inning.
- 2:36:46Holland came on, then Bryning took over in the sixth.
- 2:36:48Gale the loser, five wins and 13 losses.
- 2:36:51Sularz homered in the first inning for San Francisco his first of the year.
- 2:36:55And Bill Buckner hit a three run homer of the Cubs in their five run second inning,
- 2:36:59his eleventh of the season.
- 2:37:00A 13,712 at Wrigley Field.
- 2:37:04Coming up tonight San Diego plays at Pittsburgh.
- 2:37:07The Dodgers are at St. Louis.
- 2:37:08Philadelphia at Atlanta.
- 2:37:10Montreal is at Cincinnati.
- 2:37:11And the Mets play at Houston.
- 2:37:13The Atlanta Braves have regained first place.
- 2:37:17That is a share of it in the National League West by coming back after losing 19 out of
- 2:37:2221 ball games.
- 2:37:23They have rebounded winning five in a row now.
- 2:37:26I think four of them by one run.
- 2:37:28And they have come back into a tie for first place with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 2:37:33San Diego now three games off the face in third place in the West.
- 2:37:36Now in the East, St. Louis currently holds a three game lead over Philadelphia.
- 2:37:41The Cardinals hosting the Dodgers in a big series there at St. Louis.
- 2:37:47In the American League all the action coming up tonight.
- 2:37:50Chicago at Cleveland.
- 2:37:51Toronto is at Baltimore.
- 2:37:52Also in the East.
- 2:37:53Minnesota at New York.
- 2:37:55And Kansas City at Texas.
- 2:37:57Milwaukee at California.
- 2:37:58Boston at Seattle.
- 2:38:00And in terms of the standings, Milwaukee now with a five and a half game lead over the
- 2:38:05Boston Red Sox.
- 2:38:07Baltimore seven and a half back.
- 2:38:09The Tigers by losing this afternoon have slipped back into a virtual tie with the Yankees for
- 2:38:14fourth place at ten games off the face.
- 2:38:18In the Western Division, California hosting Milwaukee again tonight as a two game lead
- 2:38:22over Kansas City, the Royals busy at Texas.
- 2:38:25I'll be back for more from the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum.
- 2:38:29After these messages.

- 2:40:37R.A. Tigers so far have played five games out here on the West Coast.
- 2:40:40They have managed two wins and three defeats, splitting with the A's in a two-game set.
- 2:40:45Losing today, three to nothing, as Matt Keough blanked the Tigers on six hits.
- 2:40:50And winning his 11th against 16 defeats, Jory Udger going the distance as well for the Tigers.
- 2:40:55Suffered his seventh loss.
- 2:40:57He's won seven.
- 2:40:58Three runs, three hits for Oakland.
- 2:41:00Still runs six hits for the Tigers, who left seven on compared to three for the A's.
- 2:41:05The story in the first inning in this ball game, when Udger pitching to Bill Fahey, a
- 2:41:10late replacement behind the plate.
- 2:41:12Knowing Ricky Henderson was after the all-time stolen base record, did not get the ball over
- 2:41:17in the first inning.
- 2:41:18Walking Henderson, he stole second, his 116th.
- 2:41:22And then after Wayne Gross walked, they pulled a double steal, number 117 for Henderson.
- 2:41:28With Dwayne Murphy batting, Udger uncorked a wild pitch, preventing Henderson to score.
- 2:41:33And Gross took third.
- 2:41:35And Tony Armis then bounced up to get in one run, another run to make it two-nothing.
- 2:41:40And the sacrifice fly by Danny Meyer scored the third run of the inning.
- 2:41:43And that was all the scoring in the ball game, as Udger gave up only three hits.
- 2:41:48But his wildness and inability to keep the base runners in place in the first inning
- 2:41:53enabled the A's to score three times.
- 2:41:55The Tigers now move on to Seattle for a four-game series after a day off tomorrow.
- 2:41:59They'll send out Jack Morris in the opener Thursday night against Mike Moore.
- 2:42:03Morris with a record of 14-12.
- 2:42:06Moore has won six and lost 10.
- 2:42:08Our broadcast coverage for the first three nights from Seattle will begin at 10.15 Michigan
- 2:42:13time.
- 2:42:14That's it from Oakland for 1982.
- 2:42:16For Ernie Harwell, this is Paul Carey saying so long.
- 2:42:19Once again, the final score, the Oakland A's three, the Detroit Tigers nothing.
