- 0:04Speaker 1: Hey, everybody. Guess what? It's foul territory. I'm Carl Ravitch.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I got my boy Todd Frazier, Flavor Frazier, Eric Kratz
- 0:11Speaker 1: down there, doling out dollars to watch kids play baseball.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Love that.
- 0:15Speaker 1: A little later on, Buck Showalter is going to join us,
- 0:18Speaker 1: as well as Zach Mizell, who covers the Guardians and
- 0:21Speaker 1: Major League Baseball. Gary Phillips, who covers the Yankees. The
- 0:24Speaker 1: Yankees season is over. Don't forget, everybody, press subscribe for us, please,
- 0:28Speaker 1: on whatever platform you're on. You check out all the
- 0:31Speaker 1: fresh merch designs, including player license gear at FowlTerritoryShop.com. All right,
- 0:37Speaker 1: broad brush 30,000 feet above sky, boys. It looks like
- 0:41Speaker 1: This expectation every year, Todd, that the Yankees are going
- 0:45Speaker 1: to compete for or win a World Series. I think
- 0:49Speaker 1: we need to change the narrative around that. The Yankees
- 0:53Speaker 1: are like 29 other teams. At the end of the year,
- 0:57Speaker 1: they're either going to be the one that stands or
- 1:00Speaker 1: like everyone else, they're not. I think this concept of
- 1:03Speaker 1: every year that we go into it and we hear
- 1:06Speaker 1: Aaron Judge or some other great players saying, well, When
- 1:10Speaker 1: we're not the last team standing, we failed. I don't
- 1:13Speaker 1: buy that bar anymore. That was George Steinbrenner. It wasn't
- 1:17Speaker 1: the current Steinbrenner. Where are you at on that?
- 1:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, listen, that's the goal for everybody when
- 1:24Speaker 3: they come into the year. And then sometimes you just
- 1:26Speaker 3: got to be realistic. The injury bug got this team.
- 1:30Speaker 3: And it started with Aaron Judge, the best hitter in
- 1:32Speaker 3: the American League.
- 1:33Speaker 2: This guy.
- 1:35Speaker 3: When he went down, it seemed like everything else fell down.
- 1:38Speaker 3: The Yankees found their ways a little bit without him there.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Talk about a kid in Ben Rice, how he came
- 1:44Speaker 3: into his own. He's going to get some AL MVP voting.
- 1:47Speaker 3: I don't think he'll necessarily win, but he's top five
- 1:50Speaker 3: in a lot of categories. Cam Schlittler is going to
- 1:52Speaker 3: get the Cy Young. There was a lot of good
- 1:55Speaker 3: things that happened with the Yankees this year, but a
- 1:57Speaker 3: lot of bad. I mean, the pitching was absolutely phenomenal,
- 2:00Speaker 3: as we always talk about, but the hitting was it
- 2:03Speaker 3: was few and far between besides a couple of different guys,
- 2:06Speaker 3: you know, trying to figure out, you know.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Where to put people. I mean, for me, I talked
- 2:10Speaker 2: about the infield.
- 2:12Speaker 3: They may had some big mistakes that happened during these
- 2:15Speaker 3: playoff games. And I think when you're talking about, you know,
- 2:18Speaker 3: play or world series or bus, I think you have
- 2:21Speaker 3: something going there, Carl.
- 2:22Speaker 2: It's been what? 17 years since 2009. Yep.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Since they won a world series.
- 2:28Speaker 3: And now, You know, everybody that comes into it is
- 2:32Speaker 3: always thinking the same thing, which is the right thing
- 2:34Speaker 3: to think about. But you got to be kind of
- 2:37Speaker 3: realistic and see where the cards are laying. And a
- 2:40Speaker 3: non-healthy team is going to be very hard, very, very
- 2:44Speaker 3: hard for a team to make the playoffs, if not
- 2:47Speaker 3: win a series.
- 2:48Speaker 2: You saw what they did against the Red Sox.
- 2:49Speaker 3: They were beaten up, but they played against a really
- 2:52Speaker 3: good raised team who was the better team, and they
- 2:55Speaker 3: definitely showed it throughout this whole series.
- 2:57Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 2:58Speaker 5: I think it's about, it's definitely about winning. And Carl,
- 3:01Speaker 5: you bring up a great point that I think back
- 3:05Speaker 5: when they won their last championship, they were the one
- 3:09Speaker 5: ahead of the game. They were ahead of the game.
- 3:11Speaker 5: And I know being in the organization that there is
- 3:15Speaker 5: definitely some looking around, like what other teams do.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And that's a good thing.
- 3:20Speaker 5: The difference is I think there's just a level of
- 3:24Speaker 5: execution that hasn't happened. Doesn't mean it can't happen. And
- 3:28Speaker 5: I don't think they are as far away as you
- 3:31Speaker 5: would say with, well, just like any 29 other teams.
- 3:34Speaker 5: I disagree. I think they come at it with the
- 3:37Speaker 5: intent of winning. And I can name off 10 teams
- 3:40Speaker 5: right now that started this season without the intent of
- 3:43Speaker 5: making the playoffs. And one of them was the Chicago
- 3:47Speaker 5: White Sox, who are possibly going to go to the
- 3:49Speaker 5: American League Championship Series.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So I think intent is still there. Execution hasn't been there. Yeah,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and I think it's a larger conversation. I do think
- 3:59Speaker 1: that for years when they were winning, they were competing
- 4:02Speaker 1: against a smaller group of teams. The idea that the
- 4:05Speaker 1: Brewers and the Rays are realistically involved in winning a
- 4:10Speaker 1: championship this year is a different narrative than what the
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yankees are going to win the World Series has always
- 4:17Speaker 1: been about. The game has changed. The organizations have changed.
- 4:21Speaker 1: The competition level has changed. And with that, Let's look
- 4:25Speaker 1: at the Brewers and the Rays. I'm sitting here thinking
- 4:29Speaker 1: right now... if the Dodgers didn't get hot, Kratzy, that
- 4:33Speaker 1: it would feel like the Brewers and the Rays were
- 4:36Speaker 1: the two best teams. Now, Los Angeles seemingly has kind
- 4:41Speaker 1: of flipped this switch, which they did last year, which
- 4:45Speaker 1: you guys played. We've all been told you can't flip
- 4:48Speaker 1: a switch in October. This is an organization that seemingly
- 4:53Speaker 1: plays to get to October and then finds a Max Muncy,
- 4:58Speaker 1: postseason dude. Kike Hernandez, we're good. Just get in October.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Freeman will come through. He always does. We have 11,000
- 5:06Speaker 1: pitchers that are better than most other teams, so it
- 5:09Speaker 1: feels like they almost have this button that they can flip.
- 5:13Speaker 1: But before that, Kratzy, it felt like, to me, This
- 5:17Speaker 1: is a Brewers and Rays World Series. I don't know now,
- 5:21Speaker 1: but to me, it's one of those three teams, and
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'm sorry that's dismissive of Guardians White Sox, but that's
- 5:27Speaker 1: what it feels like to me. That's okay.
- 5:30Speaker 5: How about first we get the full count with Marathon,
- 5:33Speaker 5: and we'll hit it real hard here in our full
- 5:37Speaker 5: count segment.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Look at you go.
- 5:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:39Speaker 1: It's a full count.
- 5:42Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Kratzy, by the way, Todd, did you see that? Kratzy,
- 5:50Speaker 1: producer and analyst, co-host, all of that. I like that, Kratzy.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I said it yesterday.
- 5:57Speaker 5: You might have missed the show because you don't watch
- 5:59Speaker 5: what Todd is on. Todd wasn't on yesterday anyway. But
- 6:02Speaker 5: there's three guys on every show. There's three people. There's
- 6:06Speaker 5: the good-looking one, the great analyst, and the great play-by-play.
- 6:10Speaker 5: We know you're the great play-by-play, Carl. And we know
- 6:13Speaker 5: that Todd is an incredible analyst when he's on YES.
- 6:17Speaker 5: We know who sells it. But to get to your question, Carl,
- 6:21Speaker 5: to get to your comment, your question, the Dodgers do
- 6:24Speaker 5: have that button. But that button is not just a–
- 6:27Speaker 5: everybody thinks this Dodgers team is just wash, rinse, repeat.
- 6:33Speaker 5: It's just going to be the same thing. They have
- 6:35Speaker 5: built this team to be what they are. Do they
- 6:38Speaker 5: spend a lot of money?
- 6:39Speaker 1: Absolutely, 100%.
- 6:40Speaker 5: We are not going to deny that. Have they– this
- 6:44Speaker 5: is like the fifth iteration of the Dodgers since they
- 6:47Speaker 5: won in 2020. They had Dave Roberts, you know, oh,
- 6:52Speaker 5: you know, they won a COVID-shortened season. It doesn't count.
- 6:56Speaker 5: They ended up losing, not making it in 21. You know,
- 6:59Speaker 5: they fall short until 24. Yeah, 24 when they won
- 7:04Speaker 5: the first one. And Dave Roberts, Max Muncy, all those
- 7:08Speaker 5: guys said, you have to make a change in the playoffs.
- 7:11Speaker 5: All that to make a change then the next year
- 7:13Speaker 5: where it's all starting pitchers. I say all that to
- 7:16Speaker 5: say this. I think other teams are afraid of making
- 7:19Speaker 5: those changes that need to be made in the playoffs.
- 7:22Speaker 5: And people see it as, well, the Dodgers just have money.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Dodgers just have a button they push and guys turn
- 7:27Speaker 5: it on.
- 7:27Speaker 1: No.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Max Muncy was the most productive batter in their entire lineup.
- 7:31Speaker 5: You know how many games he started of this last series?
- 7:35Speaker 6: Two.
- 7:36Speaker 5: He started two of the four games. So don't tell
- 7:39Speaker 5: me like, well, we've got to have this person out
- 7:42Speaker 5: there because he's been this guy. You've got to have
- 7:44Speaker 5: this person. You hit the right buttons. You have everybody
- 7:48Speaker 5: pushing in the same direction and you have a team
- 7:51Speaker 5: that's back in the NLCS.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And, and listen, like the Dodgers, you're talking about having
- 7:58Speaker 3: probably the best hitter that you're going to see in
- 8:01Speaker 3: our generation. He batted fifth at one point. This is
- 8:04Speaker 3: how good this team really is, and Shohei Otani. I mean,
- 8:07Speaker 3: they can do what they really want to do. They
- 8:10Speaker 3: have the pitching. Yamamoto, I mean, holy cow, man. The
- 8:14Speaker 3: guy is just turning it on again, especially on the road.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, we talk about all these dogs
- 8:22Speaker 3: that they have, and they're not winning games 10-1, 12-2.
- 8:26Speaker 3: They're nickel and diamond here and there, and they're getting
- 8:30Speaker 3: on on an error, you know, a fielder's choice. A
- 8:33Speaker 3: big knock by Teoscar Hernandez, you know, a base hit.
- 8:36Speaker 3: And I think that's what some teams should take out
- 8:38Speaker 3: of this. You've got guys that can hit the home
- 8:40Speaker 3: runs anytime they want, but they're finding ways to get
- 8:43Speaker 3: guys in on little base hits. Like, that's baseball. Get
- 8:48Speaker 3: a guy on, get him over, get him in. And
- 8:50Speaker 3: this is why Dodgers have won the last two World Series.
- 8:54Speaker 1: All right, so if we go back to the top
- 8:56Speaker 1: of the show, Todd, and we talk about the expectation
- 8:59Speaker 1: for the Yankees that would suggest that there is a
- 9:02Speaker 1: switch that any team, especially with talent, can flip. I've
- 9:06Speaker 1: been told for years sitting next to you guys and
- 9:08Speaker 1: many others, you can't do that. You don't have the ability.
- 9:12Speaker 1: That's impossible because the other team is flipping a switch too.
- 9:15Speaker 1: They're trying to get you all out. They have pitchers
- 9:18Speaker 1: that get you out. Does Jacob Mizorowski's switch not work
- 9:22Speaker 1: as well as Yamamoto's? So it's a struggle for me
- 9:26Speaker 1: to go with Dave Roberts peeks his head into the
- 9:29Speaker 1: hitters meeting, which he did successfully. before yesterday's game. And
- 9:33Speaker 1: I don't know, sprinkles magic dust on him. And all
- 9:35Speaker 1: of a sudden, Andy Pahez delivers a 99 mile an
- 9:38Speaker 1: hour shot back up the middle. It wasn't Betts. It
- 9:41Speaker 1: wasn't Otani. It wasn't Muncy. It wasn't Freeman. It was
- 9:44Speaker 1: the nine hole hitter. Is that the switch? Or in
- 9:48Speaker 1: this case, do they have the money and actually fortify
- 9:52Speaker 1: their roster with all these arms? But Pa has, you know,
- 9:56Speaker 1: wasn't a perennial all-star. I understand he is and has
- 9:59Speaker 1: that ability, but it's, it's, it's this concept of switch
- 10:04Speaker 1: that I think is a good subject about the Dodgers
- 10:07Speaker 1: and the ability of the Brewers who are there. Trust me,
- 10:11Speaker 1: they're in there flipping everything they can to, to try
- 10:13Speaker 1: to beat them.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:15Speaker 3: And I think personally, or not personally overall, like, All
- 10:20Speaker 3: these teams have an opportunity to go out and get
- 10:23Speaker 3: some of these big names if they want to. And
- 10:25Speaker 3: they always cry about small market, this and that. No,
- 10:28Speaker 3: they have the money. These teams have every possible way.
- 10:31Speaker 3: And they're going to sit back and say, well, we
- 10:33Speaker 3: offered them this. And this team came bigger. Well, you
- 10:35Speaker 3: do have an opportunity to do that. And I think
- 10:38Speaker 3: for the Dodgers, not only do they bring guys over,
- 10:40Speaker 3: but I think they do their homework. I think they
- 10:43Speaker 3: understand they're not just going to bring a dude over.
- 10:46Speaker 3: and bring them in, and all of a sudden it's
- 10:47Speaker 3: going to change the culture. And I think the culture
- 10:49Speaker 3: of the L.A. Dodgers has been absolutely ridiculously good. And
- 10:54Speaker 3: it starts with Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, to name
- 10:57Speaker 3: a couple guys. And then, you know, with the Latin side,
- 11:00Speaker 3: Teoscar Hernandez. They have a culture, and these guys really
- 11:03Speaker 3: love playing together, and they really love to win. And
- 11:06Speaker 3: I think you could see how exciting they are when
- 11:09Speaker 3: they get on bases with the little antics that they do, and.
- 11:12Speaker 2: How happy each person is to play together. With and
- 11:15Speaker 2: for each other.
- 11:17Speaker 1: And they're singularly focused.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I get it.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Shohei Otani probably does $ 100 million in off-field contracts, all
- 11:25Speaker 5: that stuff.
- 11:26Speaker 1: They are singularly focused. They are very rarely.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Distracted by things that are not going to get them
- 11:34Speaker 5: to win. You don't see those things cropping up for
- 11:38Speaker 5: the Dodgers. And that's not saying they're perfect. I'm not
- 11:41Speaker 5: saying at all that they're perfect. Everybody will start bringing
- 11:43Speaker 5: up the things that players they've had that have done wrong.
- 11:46Speaker 5: I get that part of it. But I'm saying they
- 11:49Speaker 5: try their best at that. And let's also make it
- 11:53Speaker 5: a real thing. It is hard to win a World Series.
- 11:56Speaker 5: They are not a perfect team. They have not had
- 11:59Speaker 5: a perfect run to their two World Series. Had the
- 12:02Speaker 5: Padres not fallen on their face two years ago, they
- 12:06Speaker 5: would have been knocked out by the Padres early in
- 12:10Speaker 5: the playoffs, and we would have still talked about, is
- 12:12Speaker 5: Dave Roberts the guy to get this team over the hump?
- 12:15Speaker 5: Last year, we can bring up countless times that the
- 12:19Speaker 5: Dodgers could have been beaten by the Blue Jays, that
- 12:21Speaker 5: the Phillies could have beaten them in the first round
- 12:23Speaker 5: had their vaunted bullpen not collapsed and given up three
- 12:29Speaker 5: leads in, or two leads in the best of three
- 12:33Speaker 5: series that they played them in. Like, it's just a No,
- 12:37Speaker 5: I'm sorry. It was an NLDS series that they played
- 12:42Speaker 5: them in, and they had three leads that they blew. So, like,
- 12:45Speaker 5: they're not a perfect team. They're winning right now, so
- 12:48Speaker 5: everybody sees them as perfect, and they're definitely able to
- 12:52Speaker 5: be beaten. It just hasn't happened yet because these guys
- 12:55Speaker 5: set a tone for what they want to do, and
- 12:57Speaker 5: they execute it so far.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Yeah. So, Otani, Mookie, and Will Smith go 6-for-43 in
- 13:05Speaker 1: the series. And to me... the best chance to get
- 13:09Speaker 1: a team like the Dodgers, and this is where I
- 13:11Speaker 1: think the money and the talent and the arms really
- 13:16Speaker 1: pays off, is in a seven-game series. Because I think
- 13:20Speaker 1: over a longer series, the team that's got the depth
- 13:23Speaker 1: and the qualities got the better chance than they would
- 13:27Speaker 1: in a three- or five-game series. So that being said,
- 13:31Speaker 1: for the Dodgers and the Brewers, now you're looking at
- 13:34Speaker 1: an LCS. Now you're looking at a team that knocked
- 13:37Speaker 1: the Brewers out. However, Todd, you're looking at a Brewer
- 13:41Speaker 1: team that we saw in Williamsport. It's an uber-talented team.
- 13:47Speaker 1: They got a kid that sat up there in the
- 13:49Speaker 1: booth with us, Jacob Mizorowski, who is beyond his years
- 13:52Speaker 1: in maturity. And look, he didn't have a great division series.
- 13:58Speaker 1: That wasn't his shining moment. But when you go into
- 14:02Speaker 1: a series with Mizorowski, with a bullpen... You guys talk
- 14:06Speaker 1: about culture and vibes with the Dodgers. There's no way
- 14:10Speaker 1: that the Dodgers vibe right now is any better than
- 14:13Speaker 1: Milwaukee's or Tampa Bay's. Now, you want to put the
- 14:18Speaker 1: argument of which comes first, great talent or vibe? I
- 14:21Speaker 1: know this. All three of those teams are vibing. And
- 14:24Speaker 1: I think for the first time in a long time,
- 14:27Speaker 1: the Brewers vibe and talent is enough to seriously contend,
- 14:33Speaker 1: if not beat, the Dodgers. You agree with that?
- 14:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I would, I would agree totally. And I think
- 14:39Speaker 3: this is a team right now. It starts with Mizorowski
- 14:42Speaker 3: Henderson to back him up in game two. These two
- 14:45Speaker 3: guys are absolutely phenomenal pitchers and they have.
- 14:48Speaker 2: A beautiful bullpen too.
- 14:50Speaker 3: I saw the, the couple of games that I did see,
- 14:52Speaker 3: it just seemed like when they were down, I think
- 14:56Speaker 3: it was two one or two nothing and three one,
- 14:58Speaker 3: they found a way to come back and call and
- 15:00Speaker 3: get a guy on base and you know, who has
- 15:03Speaker 3: a Contreras, the catcher back there, man alive, he was
- 15:07Speaker 3: on fire. So it's like somebody seems to always step
- 15:11Speaker 3: up for the Brewers, a base hit the left, a
- 15:13Speaker 3: single up the middle. And then their bullpen is ridiculous.
- 15:18Speaker 3: So I think they have the edge in bullpen. And
- 15:22Speaker 3: if that came down to it, I think hitting, they
- 15:25Speaker 3: don't have the biggest of names, but they got guys
- 15:28Speaker 3: that mash and put the ball in play and don't
- 15:30Speaker 3: strike out a lot. And that are ready for this.
- 15:33Speaker 3: And I think the Brewers, out of all the years
- 15:35Speaker 3: that they found a way and found a way to loss,
- 15:37Speaker 3: this is the year where they can say, hey, listen,
- 15:40Speaker 3: we are not going to lose this one. This is
- 15:42Speaker 3: our time. And it starts with Pat Murphy and management
- 15:45Speaker 3: and how great. And his interview last night, I saw
- 15:48Speaker 3: he seemed to be all in his feels and understanding
- 15:50Speaker 3: how good this team really can be.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. And quickly on the other side, Pratsy.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Acuna had tears in his eyes. They got a couple
- 15:57Speaker 1: of options on him the next couple of years. Look,
- 16:00Speaker 1: the Braves dealt with injuries to Strider and Schwellenbach. They
- 16:04Speaker 1: were banged up. Well, you want to put a sort
- 16:06Speaker 1: of a bow on the Braves here?
- 16:09Speaker 5: I mean, the bow on the Braves, they're a short
- 16:11Speaker 5: team because of the fact that it wasn't Acuna's fault.
- 16:15Speaker 5: It wasn't the fact that maybe Matt Olsen had one
- 16:18Speaker 5: of the more underrated seasons this year.
- 16:21Speaker 1: It wasn't because.
- 16:23Speaker 5: It wasn't because Austin Riley had a struggle this year
- 16:26Speaker 5: or Michael Harris, he had a career year this year.
- 16:29Speaker 1: It wasn't it.
- 16:30Speaker 5: To me, they were short on their pitching because they
- 16:33Speaker 5: were truly devastated by starting pitching injuries. And that permeates
- 16:38Speaker 5: into the rest of your team. And you can say, well,
- 16:41Speaker 5: the hitting did the blah, blah, all that stuff. No,
- 16:44Speaker 5: it permeates when you have a guy who closes out
- 16:47Speaker 5: one of your postseason games and starts two of them.
- 16:52Speaker 5: And it's Chris Sale and not much else from playoff caliber.
- 16:58Speaker 5: This is also still a very good team. And you
- 17:01Speaker 5: would question a little bit, Ronald Acuna. Does he not
- 17:05Speaker 5: show up in the playoffs? Is there more pressure on him? Yes,
- 17:09Speaker 5: there's pressure. He was hurt the year they won the
- 17:12Speaker 5: World Series. He once won himself.
- 17:15Speaker 2: I know him.
- 17:15Speaker 5: I know his drive to win. And he is a
- 17:18Speaker 5: baseball rat. But this will continue to haunt him until
- 17:23Speaker 5: he gets over that hump with this team. And no,
- 17:26Speaker 5: nobody's trading Ronald Acuna.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Stop with that. All right, speaking of trades, every time
- 17:32Speaker 1: a team loses, they get into conversations about, we've got
- 17:35Speaker 1: to shake this– Shake this tree, and that is certainly
- 17:39Speaker 1: something that the Yankees have every year that they don't
- 17:42Speaker 1: win the World Series. When we come back, Gary Phillips
- 17:44Speaker 1: is going to join us. And a reminder, full count,
- 17:46Speaker 1: fueled by Marathon, where fun runs on full, saved up
- 17:50Speaker 1: to a dollar a gallon with Marathon rewards. And to
- 17:53Speaker 1: follow Dodgers the rest of the postseason, make sure to
- 17:55Speaker 1: follow Dodgers Territory on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts.
- 18:00Speaker 1: They'll be doing postgame shows after every single game. Gary
- 18:04Speaker 1: Phillips when we come back with more on the Yankees.
- 18:15Speaker 1: All the record is powered by MLB, nine innings, 26.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Let's welcome on Yankee reporter for the New York Daily News,
- 18:22Speaker 1: Gary Phillips. All right, Gary. I mean, simple question. Is
- 18:25Speaker 1: Cashman out? Is Boone out? I mean, Yankee fans, they're wondering,
- 18:29Speaker 1: are we going to make massive changes here in light
- 18:32Speaker 1: of another non-World Series year? Or are those folks going
- 18:36Speaker 1: to be sadly disappointed?
- 18:40Speaker 6: Think they're going to be sadly disappointed, you know, just
- 18:44Speaker 6: to start with Cashman, keep it quick and simple. It
- 18:46Speaker 6: would be stunning to see anybody else in the general
- 18:49Speaker 6: manager's chair for the New York Yankees. So I fully
- 18:53Speaker 6: expect him to be back. You know, he has a
- 18:55Speaker 6: great working relationship with Hal Steinbrenner. I don't see any
- 19:00Speaker 6: sort of shake up there. And truthfully, I don't really
- 19:03Speaker 6: see that happening in the manager's position either.
- 19:06Speaker 2: You know, I'm.
- 19:08Speaker 6: Fans are obviously upset with Aaron Boone. There were a
- 19:11Speaker 6: lot of fire Boone shams after the final out last night,
- 19:14Speaker 6: but he still has another year on his contract. I
- 19:18Speaker 6: think I'll shoot the messenger here, but I think he
- 19:22Speaker 6: actually did a really good job during the regular season,
- 19:25Speaker 6: navigating the Yankees, numerous injuries and a bullpen that required
- 19:29Speaker 6: a lot of breakouts from different guys that you weren't
- 19:32Speaker 6: necessarily expecting to be high leverage relievers. And the Yankees
- 19:37Speaker 6: are going to, bake in that injury excuse like they
- 19:40Speaker 6: have in the past. I also think the potential for
- 19:45Speaker 6: an impending lockout plays a factor here. Does Hal Steinbrenner
- 19:49Speaker 6: want to pay two managers for what might be an
- 19:54Speaker 6: incomplete season or a partial season? It doesn't really seem
- 19:57Speaker 6: like something he would do based on just how he's
- 20:00Speaker 6: operated in the past. You also have to factor in
- 20:02Speaker 6: that if there is a work stoppage, a new manager
- 20:05Speaker 6: is going to have a very limited window for getting
- 20:08Speaker 6: to know his players, getting to know somebody like Aaron Judge,
- 20:12Speaker 6: getting to just communicate because there's restrictions on those sorts
- 20:15Speaker 6: of things during those periods, right? So I would be surprised.
- 20:22Speaker 7: In short.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Yeah, we talk about, or you brought up an excuse.
- 20:26Speaker 3: There was no excuse that they didn't hit. And I
- 20:29Speaker 3: think that was the biggest issue there. The pitching was
- 20:33Speaker 3: absolutely dynamite. can you talk to me a little bit
- 20:36Speaker 3: about what Judge kind of said in his comments? I
- 20:38Speaker 3: think what I kind of took from it was he
- 20:41Speaker 3: was kind of telling Cashman, bro, we need to get
- 20:45Speaker 3: going here.
- 20:45Speaker 2: We get some dogs.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Not saying these guys couldn't play, but they need to
- 20:48Speaker 3: get some players here that are championship-level caliber and some
- 20:53Speaker 3: hitters so they can shake it up and win a
- 20:56Speaker 3: World Series.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Yeah, so for those who didn't see Judge's comments after
- 21:01Speaker 6: the game last night, he made a mention of Needing
- 21:04Speaker 6: to be all in and go all in this offseason
- 21:07Speaker 6: when asked about how Cashman and Steinbrenner should respond to
- 21:12Speaker 6: another ALDS exit. And that prompted a follow-up. Does Judge
- 21:17Speaker 6: feel that the Yankees have gone all in enough during
- 21:20Speaker 6: his 11-year ringless tenure? And the first words out of
- 21:25Speaker 6: his mouth were, it's tough to say.
- 21:27Speaker 1: He didn't really.
- 21:29Speaker 6: elaborate on what he would have wanted them to do
- 21:31Speaker 6: differently in the past or what he would like them
- 21:34Speaker 6: to do moving forward. You know, it's a very, very
- 21:37Speaker 6: limited free agent class coming up, but I thought it
- 21:41Speaker 6: was also interesting that he brought up the phrase run
- 21:44Speaker 6: it back, which, you know, there was so much talk
- 21:46Speaker 6: about the Yankees retaining a largely similar roster this past
- 21:49Speaker 6: off season. And that was an idea back in spring
- 21:53Speaker 6: or an approach back in spring training that judge endorsed
- 21:57Speaker 6: and said he was on board with, but, Last night,
- 22:00Speaker 6: he was talking about a need to bring in new players,
- 22:02Speaker 6: new philosophies, new coaches, things like that, generally speaking, in
- 22:07Speaker 6: the sense that all teams do that every offseason or
- 22:10Speaker 6: try to do that every offseason. But that really wasn't
- 22:13Speaker 6: the case for the Yankees last winter. And they ended
- 22:17Speaker 6: up in the same exact spot that they were a
- 22:20Speaker 6: year ago against Toronto. So when Judge speaks, he typically
- 22:25Speaker 6: has a point and a message that he wants to
- 22:27Speaker 6: get across. He does not say things By accident, as
- 22:30Speaker 6: you guys know, he's 34 and just had a large
- 22:36Speaker 6: chunk of this past season taken away from him due
- 22:39Speaker 6: to injury. The work stoppage could take another chunk away
- 22:43Speaker 6: from him next season. He's running out of time to
- 22:45Speaker 6: win a championship and while simultaneously being, you know, an
- 22:51Speaker 6: elite top two player in the game. So, yeah, he
- 22:55Speaker 6: made it a point to kind of nudge the front
- 22:57Speaker 6: office last night.
- 23:00Speaker 5: But is it about because they brought back the same
- 23:02Speaker 5: team and they were the second best hitting team statistically
- 23:06Speaker 5: in the league last year. So bringing back the same
- 23:09Speaker 5: team isn't the issue. Aaron Judge isn't the issue. The
- 23:13Speaker 5: manager and the GM are not the issue. I agree
- 23:15Speaker 5: with every one of those statements. Is it the philosophy
- 23:20Speaker 5: or inability to keep up with what it takes to win?
- 23:25Speaker 5: And is the Yankees ability to make that shift? from
- 23:30Speaker 5: specifically offensively, from homer or bust and making the players
- 23:37Speaker 5: that they have, because that's all they're going to have,
- 23:40Speaker 5: be the team that can push them over the hump
- 23:43Speaker 5: in a game they need to win by one run
- 23:45Speaker 5: and not win it by a homer?
- 23:48Speaker 6: I'm not so sure that it's homer or bust being
- 23:51Speaker 6: the issue, but I do know the Yankees would like
- 23:54Speaker 6: to cut back on the amount of strikeouts. That's something
- 23:58Speaker 6: that Ryan Cashman talked about last winter, especially at the
- 24:02Speaker 6: bottom of the order and how that was going to
- 24:03Speaker 6: be a focus on improving that. And that didn't really happen.
- 24:08Speaker 6: I think there does need to be a little bit
- 24:10Speaker 6: more of a balance between contact and power. Home runs
- 24:15Speaker 6: are going to win you ball games in the postseason,
- 24:18Speaker 6: but there is also something to be said for having
- 24:20Speaker 6: a more balanced approach. And I think there's also something
- 24:24Speaker 6: to be said for, you know, that they just need
- 24:27Speaker 6: to figure out how to survive and stay afloat offensively
- 24:32Speaker 6: every time that judge gets hurt. I mean, in 2023,
- 24:35Speaker 6: when he goes down with a toe injury, that was
- 24:38Speaker 6: not a good remaining roster that they had in place,
- 24:42Speaker 6: a good remaining offense that they had in place. This year,
- 24:45Speaker 6: I thought there was plenty of talent to survive his absence.
- 24:50Speaker 6: And with guys like Ben Rice, who might get down
- 24:54Speaker 6: ballot MVP votes and Cody Bellinger, who's highest paid, clearing
- 24:58Speaker 6: the game this season, like they still faltered. They still
- 25:02Speaker 6: collapsed for long stretches of time. And that just can't
- 25:06Speaker 6: happen every single time that judge goes down with an injury.
- 25:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:10Speaker 1: And I recall as we're joined by Gary Phillips, who
- 25:13Speaker 1: of course covers the Yankees for the New York daily
- 25:15Speaker 1: news when he did, I was there, Booney, they got athletic.
- 25:20Speaker 1: They got more athletic than he kind of enjoyed that
- 25:23Speaker 1: style of play. He looks across the field and sees
- 25:26Speaker 1: the Rays play a more athletic style. He looks at
- 25:30Speaker 1: the Brewers, I'm sure, and they play a little bit
- 25:32Speaker 1: more athletic. The conversation around Jazz Chisholm and Trent Grisham,
- 25:38Speaker 1: who both, like anybody that has ever worn the pinstripes,
- 25:41Speaker 1: I shouldn't say everybody, 95% of them will always say,
- 25:45Speaker 1: of course, I want to come back. Like, who wouldn't
- 25:47Speaker 1: want to go back and play for them? How do
- 25:50Speaker 1: the Yankees then make the transition into, if it's apparent
- 25:54Speaker 1: what's in front of them, to become more athletic and
- 25:57Speaker 1: still retain a guy like Judge, Bellinger, who obviously can
- 26:02Speaker 1: hit really well, hope that Spencer Jones takes the next step.
- 26:06Speaker 1: How do they do that? Because in this world of
- 26:09Speaker 1: Major League Baseball, copycat is the thing. But it seems
- 26:12Speaker 1: very obvious to fans that the Rays were better, much better.
- 26:17Speaker 1: They don't have near the payroll. They have one superstar
- 26:20Speaker 1: in Caminero and Aranda, and Diaz are probably not considered
- 26:27Speaker 1: Yankee stars if they were on the Yankees. So how
- 26:30Speaker 1: do they do that? How do they make the transition?
- 26:33Speaker 1: Why do they see it and not be able to
- 26:35Speaker 1: emulate it?
- 26:37Speaker 6: I do think that they're hopeful. Some of the young
- 26:40Speaker 6: players that they have, like George Lombard Jr., like Spencer Jones,
- 26:43Speaker 6: who you mentioned, I think they are hopeful that those
- 26:46Speaker 6: guys are going to be key pieces moving forward, and
- 26:49Speaker 6: they would certainly bring some of that speed, some of
- 26:52Speaker 6: that athleticism Lombard, you would hope is a guy who
- 26:56Speaker 6: could provide contact back to ball skills as he develops
- 27:00Speaker 6: as a hitter, Spencer Jones, that might be a little
- 27:02Speaker 6: bit more wishful thinking, you know, just with his strikeout
- 27:05Speaker 6: and swing and miss tendencies, which he even acknowledged last night. Um,
- 27:09Speaker 6: but as, as far as who they bring in, you know, that's,
- 27:12Speaker 6: it's a great question because like I said, it's a
- 27:15Speaker 6: very limited free agent class. Now, Chisholm might end up
- 27:19Speaker 6: being the most talented hitter in this free agent class.
- 27:22Speaker 6: And that is more an indictment of the entire group
- 27:26Speaker 6: than it is anything to be said about his performance.
- 27:29Speaker 6: I don't expect him to be back. I don't expect
- 27:33Speaker 6: Trent Grisham to be back out. Jazz certainly has the
- 27:36Speaker 6: athleticism that we're talking about. Grisham does not. So I
- 27:40Speaker 6: would expect those to be two significant departures for the
- 27:43Speaker 6: Yankees this year, whether that, actually pans out or not
- 27:48Speaker 6: remains to be seen, but that's the indication that I
- 27:50Speaker 6: get as we go into the off season now.
- 27:53Speaker 3: I want to, let me just stick with this real quick.
- 27:58Speaker 3: I want to talk about a David Bednar right now.
- 28:01Speaker 3: And what do you think? I mean, he's up for
- 28:04Speaker 3: the qualifying offer. I think it's close to like 23 million.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Do you see the Yankees kind of giving him a
- 28:09Speaker 3: shot to come back and be, you know, I don't know,
- 28:11Speaker 3: maybe the closer, if not the closer, you know, a
- 28:14Speaker 3: reliever at the end of the day.
- 28:17Speaker 6: Think they should certainly be interested in bringing him back.
- 28:20Speaker 6: I would think they would be willing to extend him
- 28:23Speaker 6: the qualifying offer. As far as a long-term deal, it's
- 28:27Speaker 6: tough to say with this team because they haven't given
- 28:30Speaker 6: significant money in a multi-year contract to a reliever since
- 28:35Speaker 6: 2019 when they locked up Zach Britton and Adam Adovino.
- 28:40Speaker 6: It's been years since the Yankees have heavily invested in
- 28:44Speaker 6: a free agent reliever. It's something I even wrote about
- 28:47Speaker 6: last spring, last off season, I asked Brian Cashman, you know,
- 28:51Speaker 6: why essentially is this the organization's stance on paying relievers?
- 28:57Speaker 7: And he said, it's not.
- 28:58Speaker 6: And this is just how things have shaken out and
- 29:01Speaker 6: things like that. Now there is some credence, I guess,
- 29:05Speaker 6: to leaning on their pitching department and Matt Blake and
- 29:08Speaker 6: trying to find diamonds in the rough for cheaper prices.
- 29:11Speaker 6: We've seen that work out for the Yankees time and
- 29:13Speaker 6: time again, but you also need somebody that And I
- 29:18Speaker 6: think one thing the Yankees really like about David Bednar
- 29:21Speaker 6: is just his moxie and his embrace of the big
- 29:25Speaker 6: moments and the tough moments. And, you know, he's definitely
- 29:29Speaker 6: a guy who showed that he has poise and toughness
- 29:32Speaker 6: and can handle the bright lights of New York. So
- 29:35Speaker 6: if I were the Yankees, I would be very, very,
- 29:37Speaker 6: very interested in retaining him. With relievers in them, it
- 29:41Speaker 6: always seems to come down to price.
- 29:44Speaker 5: Well, that's definitely a different narrative than when Bednar came in.
- 29:47Speaker 5: Some people were afraid he would fold under it, and
- 29:50Speaker 5: he didn't. So that's great that he was able to
- 29:52Speaker 5: change that narrative. My question to you is.
- 29:56Speaker 1: We've talked about free agent. Who's the best in the
- 29:58Speaker 1: free agent class? Blah, blah.
- 29:59Speaker 5: That's always the narrative around the Yankees. But when I
- 30:02Speaker 5: go down the list, and I had to pull it
- 30:03Speaker 5: up myself so I didn't miss anybody, I go Ben Rice,
- 30:07Speaker 5: Aaron Judge, Austin Wells, Spencer Jones, George Lombard, Jason Dominguez,
- 30:13Speaker 5: Anthony Volpe, and I'm missing probably one more guy, all
- 30:17Speaker 5: had significant at-bats in the big leagues this year for
- 30:20Speaker 5: the Yankees, and they're all from the Yankees system. Are
- 30:25Speaker 5: they forcing that because, hey, you know what? The season
- 30:28Speaker 5: didn't happen like we wanted it to, but they did
- 30:31Speaker 5: have 93 wins. Are they forcing those guys to be
- 30:34Speaker 5: big leaguers and maybe trying to build from within? Or
- 30:38Speaker 5: is it something that, no, this is the team that
- 30:40Speaker 5: you're going to run it back and roll forward with.
- 30:43Speaker 5: We just had to add a little piece.
- 30:46Speaker 6: Well, look, I think every team, even the big spenders,
- 30:49Speaker 6: want to have some sort of balance between big contracts
- 30:53Speaker 6: and cost controllable guys. Some of the names that you
- 30:56Speaker 6: just mentioned were very successful this year and are success
- 31:01Speaker 6: stories for the Yankees player development. Other guys are tremendous disappointments.
- 31:07Speaker 6: I don't know that Jason Dominguez has a future in
- 31:10Speaker 6: New York anymore at this point, just to name him
- 31:13Speaker 6: as an example.
- 31:14Speaker 1: So I.
- 31:17Speaker 6: Think Hal Steinbrenner, just knowing what he has said about
- 31:21Speaker 6: payroll and $ 300 million figure and things like that, you know, yeah,
- 31:27Speaker 6: he would like to have some cost controllable contracts on there.
- 31:30Speaker 6: I think he would like to have a whole lineup
- 31:34Speaker 6: of Ben Rice's and a whole rotation full of Cam Schlittler's,
- 31:38Speaker 6: but that's just not going to, you know, you're not
- 31:40Speaker 6: going to hit on every single guy that you draft
- 31:43Speaker 6: or sign as an amateur or that you develop in
- 31:45Speaker 6: your own farm system. And it's clear that the Yankees
- 31:49Speaker 6: need an infusion of talent and they're going to have
- 31:51Speaker 6: to either spend on the select few attractive free agents?
- 31:58Speaker 6: Are they going to have to get creative and trade
- 32:00Speaker 6: for some impact players? Because clearly what they have right
- 32:04Speaker 6: now is not enough.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Last one for me. What is the optimism that Judge
- 32:10Speaker 1: is healthy whenever the season starts next season? This was
- 32:16Speaker 1: a lost season for Aaron Judge, and I know many
- 32:19Speaker 1: people will Connect the dots. We didn't have Aaron Judge.
- 32:23Speaker 2: We didn't win.
- 32:24Speaker 1: We need him. Players get reputations for not being able
- 32:28Speaker 1: to be on the field. What is the expectation? What's
- 32:32Speaker 1: the hope? What are some of the things they do
- 32:34Speaker 1: to try to keep him on the field for an
- 32:36Speaker 1: entire season?
- 32:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, with what he has now, just a
- 32:41Speaker 6: calf strain, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't
- 32:44Speaker 6: be ready on time whenever the season may start. There
- 32:48Speaker 6: was obviously risk of him doing further damage if he
- 32:52Speaker 6: were to come back this postseason in an expedited timeline.
- 32:56Speaker 6: A lot of talk about just how the muscle that
- 32:59Speaker 6: he had strained was part of the same kinetic chain
- 33:01Speaker 6: as his Achilles. And obviously it was a risk. It
- 33:04Speaker 6: would have been a risk to bring him back so soon.
- 33:06Speaker 6: And that's why the Yankees didn't want to do that.
- 33:08Speaker 6: You know, Aaron Boone said last night it was the
- 33:10Speaker 6: right thing to do as much as Judge might push
- 33:14Speaker 6: back against that or say otherwise, or say that he
- 33:17Speaker 6: wanted to be out there and was ready to go.
- 33:19Speaker 6: Like he wasn't, he suffered a moderate calf strain on
- 33:22Speaker 6: September 16th. You know, typically you're talking at least three
- 33:25Speaker 6: to six weeks of just recovery for that. But that said,
- 33:29Speaker 6: I don't see why that would prevent him from being
- 33:31Speaker 6: ready next season as far as staying healthy. That's, that's
- 33:35Speaker 6: the million dollar question. You know, do the Yankees get
- 33:39Speaker 6: him more DH days if, they move on from John
- 33:41Speaker 6: Carlos Stanton, you know, that that's certainly a possibility. Do
- 33:46Speaker 6: they just say like, no, no diving, no running into walls.
- 33:50Speaker 6: You know, I think that's, that's a much harder thing
- 33:52Speaker 6: to tell a player, you know, maybe, maybe they agree
- 33:55Speaker 6: in the moment, but when the ball is actually hit
- 33:57Speaker 6: and you got to go make a play, that that's
- 33:58Speaker 6: a tough thing to keep in mind. So I'm not sure.
- 34:01Speaker 6: I'm not sure how they keep him healthy. Like I
- 34:03Speaker 6: said before, he's getting older. He's a big guy. It's,
- 34:08Speaker 6: It's going to be a priority, obviously, but I'm not
- 34:11Speaker 6: sure exactly how they pull that off because some of
- 34:13Speaker 6: the injuries he's had have just been unlucky and unfortunate.
- 34:18Speaker 1: All right, my friend, Gary, thanks very much for being
- 34:20Speaker 1: with us here. We appreciate it. Yeah. And anytime judges
- 34:23Speaker 1: involved in staying healthy, it's not really a million dollar question.
- 34:26Speaker 1: It's like a hundred million dollar question. But for the
- 34:29Speaker 1: Yankees sake, let's hope let's hope he's able to stay
- 34:31Speaker 1: on the field. Appreciate it, buddy. Game-changing swings, momentum-shifting pitches.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Mike Trout's hit the plate, Kershaw's on the mound, and
- 34:38Speaker 1: a new generation of fireballers led by Paul Skeens. Prove
- 34:42Speaker 1: your stats, experience perfect contact, and clutch moments like never

- 34:49Speaker 1: app store today to download MLB 9 Innings 26. What do.
- 34:56Speaker 2: You think?
- 34:58Speaker 7: Well, our team does need some heat on the mound.
- 35:03Speaker 4: But we also need some power on the plate and
- 35:05Speaker 4: someone reliable in the infield.
- 35:06Speaker 7: I say we take Jimmy.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Yes!
- 35:13Speaker 6: Yes!
- 35:14Speaker 1: Yes!
- 35:15Speaker 2: Yes! Maybe next year, guys.
- 35:17Speaker 1: All right, boys. Let's jump ahead. Leave the Yankees for
- 35:23Speaker 1: a while. Buck Showalter is going to join us in
- 35:25Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Cleveland.
- 35:27Speaker 1: and Chicago. Eric, start with you. Yesterday felt like the day.
- 35:34Speaker 1: It's weird because you look at games like this, but
- 35:36Speaker 1: Parker Messick gets to go for the Guardians. If, in fact,
- 35:39Speaker 1: they win the game, it's Gavin Williams. Bizarrely, they're down,
- 35:43Speaker 1: and yet it feels like the momentum is all theirs,
- 35:46Speaker 1: and the White Sox had another of their bullpen games,
- 35:49Speaker 1: and it didn't work out. How do they turn this
- 35:52Speaker 1: thing around?
- 35:54Speaker 5: The White Sox, to turn it around, because it's weird
- 35:57Speaker 5: that you're saying a team that's up to one needs
- 35:59Speaker 5: to turn it around. But after yesterday, after yesterday, that's
- 36:03Speaker 5: the reason that teams that are afraid of the bullpen
- 36:07Speaker 5: days are afraid of bullpen days. Because what if somebody
- 36:11Speaker 5: doesn't have it? Like, especially now with the rules, like
- 36:14Speaker 5: you got to get three out, you got to get,
- 36:16Speaker 5: or you got to face three batters, that type of thing.
- 36:18Speaker 5: So I don't think the white socks need to panic.
- 36:22Speaker 5: I think the panic is still, if there's any panic
- 36:25Speaker 5: in this series, it's on the Guardians, but I think
- 36:29Speaker 5: it shifts in their favor because of who they have
- 36:33Speaker 5: on the mound, because of the fact that they, while
- 36:36Speaker 5: they threw their entire bullpen also, it wasn't 100% taxed
- 36:40Speaker 5: where I think Parker Messick's going to be able to
- 36:42Speaker 5: pick them up and keep them in the game. The
- 36:45Speaker 5: reality is the Guardians hit the ball hard even when
- 36:48Speaker 5: they were making outs, so everything are they starting to
- 36:51Speaker 5: see all these White Sox relievers a few too many times?
- 36:55Speaker 5: That's where, if I'm a White Sox catcher, I might
- 36:59Speaker 5: be trying to give each batter a different look, remembering
- 37:02Speaker 5: what they did because the guys were starting to make
- 37:05Speaker 5: better swings, better contact on the Guardians.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Frazier, they struck out 19 times yesterday. 19. 19. Can
- 37:16Speaker 1: we put our head in the pillow, wake up and
- 37:17Speaker 1: think like the ball is going to look like a
- 37:19Speaker 1: beach ball? Or are we in a funk all of
- 37:21Speaker 1: a sudden?
- 37:22Speaker 2: No, I wouldn't say.
- 37:23Speaker 3: I think it's first game at home there. And all
- 37:27Speaker 3: of a sudden, it's like the excitement of, man, we
- 37:31Speaker 3: are actually first game of winning. If they win, they
- 37:33Speaker 3: win the series there at home. And I think maybe
- 37:36Speaker 3: the excitement got to them a little bit. I'm not
- 37:37Speaker 3: counting this team out. I think this team is going
- 37:40Speaker 3: to beat the Guardians. And I think they're going to
- 37:42Speaker 3: move on. But I think they have to understand they
- 37:44Speaker 3: don't have to swing outside the strike zone.
- 37:46Speaker 2: They can calm down. They can relax a little bit.
- 37:48Speaker 3: The first inning yesterday, they had an opportunity to get two, one,
- 37:52Speaker 3: maybe two more runs. And now all of a sudden,
- 37:55Speaker 3: what was it, Maidroff? The right hander got up.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Yeah, Maidroff.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Maidroff got up there and the first pitch he swung
- 38:02Speaker 3: at was over his head and then he struck out
- 38:04Speaker 3: on another ball.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Like, slow down a little bit. Take your time. Maybe
- 38:08Speaker 2: take a pitch. Breathe.
- 38:09Speaker 3: And that kind of, got the guardians back to where
- 38:12Speaker 3: they needed to be. So one thing I saw the
- 38:16Speaker 3: left-handed pitcher from the guardians, those left-handers were really good.
- 38:19Speaker 3: So again, in Parker Messick, here we go. So, but
- 38:23Speaker 3: I do think the white Sox will calm down a
- 38:25Speaker 3: little bit today. And I do think ultimately they might
- 38:27Speaker 3: have an opportunity to win this series today.
- 38:30Speaker 5: But I don't think anybody was surprised by the fact
- 38:32Speaker 5: that they broke a record and striking out 19 times
- 38:35Speaker 5: in a post-season game. That that's the fear as a
- 38:38Speaker 5: white Sox fan that, well, this isn't really that far
- 38:43Speaker 5: off our norm. We were top three worst strikeout teams
- 38:47Speaker 5: in the game. And the guard had the guardians figured
- 38:51Speaker 5: out a formula. I think, I think Steven voting the
- 38:54Speaker 5: guardians helped. I thought, I thought Foster Griffin could have
- 38:58Speaker 5: just continued to mow through that lineup.
- 39:00Speaker 1: I think he had seven.
- 39:00Speaker 5: Punches, the most ever by a reliever in guardians in
- 39:04Speaker 5: Indian Cleveland baseball history. Like, I would be afraid that
- 39:09Speaker 5: they figured something out that is already there. Like these
- 39:13Speaker 5: dudes strike out and they strike out too much. And
- 39:17Speaker 5: the energy is going to be even more. The difference
- 39:19Speaker 5: is today, the energy and the pressure are going to
- 39:22Speaker 5: be there. So maybe this team needs that pressure to
- 39:25Speaker 5: be able to push us across the line. Good note
- 39:28Speaker 5: as we go to break here, the last time the
- 39:30Speaker 5: White Sox actually clinched a playoff series at home, like
- 39:33Speaker 5: Fraze thinks is going to happen, the Titanic, the big
- 39:36Speaker 5: ship that ran into the iceberg that led to that
- 39:39Speaker 5: great movie, was still six years away from being made.
- 39:44Speaker 1: By the way, it took a few years to make it,
- 39:46Speaker 1: but it was still six years away from actually being made.
- 39:49Speaker 1: That's the ship. It's not the movie. It's not Leo.
- 39:53Speaker 1: That's the ship. That's the last time they clinched at home. Carl,
- 39:56Speaker 1: Todd just asked.
- 39:57Speaker 5: Me on our thread that we have, he just asked
- 39:59Speaker 5: me how nice, he wanted me to ask you how
- 40:02Speaker 5: nice the Titanic was.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Like, you saw it? No, he didn't. I know he
- 40:07Speaker 1: didn't do that because he doesn't think that way. Like,
- 40:09Speaker 1: you just made that up. Dodgers, Brewers, Monday, White Sox,
- 40:16Speaker 1: Guardians versus the Rays. On Monday. So which ticket do
- 40:21Speaker 1: you want? You want Sunday in Milwaukee? You want Monday
- 40:24Speaker 1: in Milwaukee? Or you want game one race? Todd?
- 40:30Speaker 3: Nobody beats the Miz. Ain't nobody going to beat the Miz.
- 40:33Speaker 3: I want to see him pitch. And whatever day that is,
- 40:36Speaker 3: that's got to be Sunday, I would assume. That's the
- 40:38Speaker 3: guy I want to go see. And the Dodgers, I
- 40:40Speaker 3: would assume that would be, is that Yamamoto?
- 40:45Speaker 2: Or no?
- 40:45Speaker 1: It could be Snell. Oh, Google.
- 40:49Speaker 3: It could be anybody. I think anytime Mizorowski's pitching, I
- 40:54Speaker 3: want to go see. So I'm going to go to
- 40:56Speaker 3: game one for sure.
- 40:58Speaker 5: This matchup was waiting to be happened. You couldn't have
- 41:00Speaker 5: bought the seats on SeatGeek for back on August 2nd
- 41:05Speaker 5: when the Brewers didn't pull the trigger and trade for
- 41:07Speaker 5: Scooble to give them the absolute leg up in the
- 41:11Speaker 5: National League. And now Scooble's going to pitch in Milwaukee.
- 41:15Speaker 5: And I assume he's going to pitch against Mizorowski. And
- 41:20Speaker 5: there will.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Be some questions, a lot of questions, if it doesn't
- 41:27Speaker 1: go the Brewers' way. Let's put it that way. You
- 41:30Speaker 1: were looking for the Brewers to pull the deal, get
- 41:32Speaker 1: CeCe Sabathia again back in 08, and just have it
- 41:35Speaker 1: with his name Scooble on the back. You think they're
- 41:38Speaker 1: going to rue that day? No, I don't think they are.
- 41:42Speaker 5: I'm saying if Scooble gets them, and they beat the Brewers'
- 41:47Speaker 5: ace in Mizorowski, then they'll rue the day.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Give me Churio versus Scooble. Give me that plate appearance.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Give me Mizorowski against Otani right off the bat.
- 42:01Speaker 5: Right out of the gate. I mean, 105, his first
- 42:04Speaker 5: playoff pitch. Like, I don't even need that. You know
- 42:07Speaker 5: what I wanted to see? I wanted to see Scooble
- 42:10Speaker 5: versus Mookie Betts versus Otani versus Freddie Freeman. That sounds
- 42:15Speaker 5: like a World Series.
- 42:16Speaker 1: For the Brewers. All right, boys, I have a code
- 42:18Speaker 1: for you all. You can use code TERRITORY10, 10% off
- 42:21Speaker 1: your next set of tickets at SeatGeek, 10% off any tickets,
- 42:24Speaker 1: promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the link in
- 42:27Speaker 1: the description to download the app and have the code
- 42:29Speaker 1: automatically added to your account so you can use it later.
- 42:40Speaker 1: It is better than the box scores. We dive into
- 42:42Speaker 1: the Brewers Padres game last night, starting with what went
- 42:45Speaker 1: wrong ultimately for the Padres. You know, they pulled the
- 42:48Speaker 1: ripcord there and the parachute of Michael King in the
- 42:51Speaker 1: game before last night. So that, that saved them for
- 42:54Speaker 1: another game. And then they just ran out of gas.
- 42:56Speaker 1: They get the big hit when they need it. And
- 42:58Speaker 1: the Padres kind of died at the end. They went
- 43:01Speaker 1: over 21 at the plate to end the season, which
- 43:03Speaker 1: is the longest hit list drop by a national league
- 43:05Speaker 1: team to end a post-season all time. So, I don't know, Tal,
- 43:11Speaker 1: when you look at it, there were definitely days where
- 43:14Speaker 1: you looked at the Padres and you could sleep on
- 43:17Speaker 1: them and say, they could win the World Series. I mean,
- 43:20Speaker 1: they got dudes on that team, and yet they come
- 43:23Speaker 1: up short here again, and it looks like that team's
- 43:26Speaker 1: going to look different next year for sure. But what
- 43:28Speaker 1: went wrong?
- 43:31Speaker 2: Excuse me.
- 43:31Speaker 3: I think you look at this, before I go into them,
- 43:34Speaker 3: you look at this whole playoff atmosphere.
- 43:36Speaker 2: There's been some records broken.
- 43:38Speaker 3: I mean, Talk about the 19 strikeouts by the White Sox,
- 43:41Speaker 3: 0 for 21. Hitting hasn't been the greatest in this playoff.
- 43:46Speaker 3: I feel like if we're talking about some sort of drought,
- 43:49Speaker 3: there's been a drought of a lot of players. There's
- 43:52Speaker 3: been a few, but not that many where you're like, oh, man, bro,
- 43:56Speaker 3: these guys are crushing it at the plate right now.
- 43:58Speaker 3: Not a lot of teams have been doing that.
- 44:01Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 44:02Speaker 3: I think when you hear Padres, you're like, Man, this
- 44:05Speaker 3: team always has a chance to win a World Series,
- 44:07Speaker 3: but they just never, ever get it done. Expectations, again,
- 44:13Speaker 3: just another one of those teams where they have the
- 44:15Speaker 3: pieces to do everything. I mean, you talk about a
- 44:18Speaker 3: Fernando Tatis Jr. Took him 55 games at a home run,
- 44:21Speaker 3: and he still had a pretty good year. Machado, not
- 44:25Speaker 3: his best year. Yeah, just a lot of different things.
- 44:30Speaker 3: A lot of moving parts there. Their bullpen has always
- 44:32Speaker 3: been good. I can't really pinpoint... It just, they never really,
- 44:36Speaker 3: when they got the lead, they never really took it and, like,
- 44:39Speaker 3: you know, stomped on guys' throats, for lack of better words,
- 44:41Speaker 3: once they had the lead. It was always, you know,
- 44:44Speaker 3: nitpicking here. Oh, they came back another run. And it
- 44:47Speaker 3: was never that final cut where it's like, oh, man,
- 44:50Speaker 3: this Padres team, both pitching and hitting, are coming through here.
- 44:54Speaker 3: This is a team to be reckoned with. Not to
- 44:56Speaker 3: be reckoned with because they're that good. But it just
- 44:57Speaker 3: never happened.
- 44:59Speaker 5: I feel like this is, I mean, I don't know
- 45:02Speaker 5: if you guys get into the Marvel thing comics where
- 45:05Speaker 5: they start doing the metaverse and stuff, like where it's
- 45:08Speaker 5: just alternate reality. We could be having this exact same
- 45:11Speaker 5: conversation and the Padres are moving on from this series. Yes,
- 45:16Speaker 5: I can say, I'm not even going to talk about
- 45:18Speaker 5: the season. We talk about in the postseason, Manny Machado
- 45:21Speaker 5: showed up. Tatis hit a few big dingers, but outside
- 45:24Speaker 5: of that, he didn't really show up at the plate
- 45:27Speaker 5: as much. Yes, Ty France, who was one of their
- 45:29Speaker 5: better hitters, you know, going into the postseason, Did well.
- 45:34Speaker 5: Some bad things happened.
- 45:35Speaker 1: All that stuff.
- 45:36Speaker 5: This series was easily, easily the best series of the postseason.
- 45:39Speaker 5: And in my opinion, could possibly be the series that
- 45:44Speaker 5: is the World Series champion. And I say that with
- 45:49Speaker 5: little doubt that the Brewers were going to win the series.
- 45:53Speaker 5: But I think somehow the deployment of their bullpen didn't
- 45:57Speaker 5: work out. The deployment of their superpower didn't work out.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Because.
- 46:02Speaker 5: They got outpitched, and it seemed like the Brewers had
- 46:07Speaker 5: more depth, especially going into yesterday's game where Gasser starts,
- 46:12Speaker 5: and then you're like, oh, man, how are they going
- 46:13Speaker 5: to get the rest of their– whoa, how did they
- 46:15Speaker 5: get so many outs from those guys? You didn't even
- 46:18Speaker 5: see a Kyle Harrison who was going to be a
- 46:20Speaker 5: Cy Young candidate before he went to Las Vegas during
- 46:23Speaker 5: this season. Like, you didn't see– Mizorowski was in the bullpen.
- 46:27Speaker 5: He didn't have to come in. It just seemed like
- 46:29Speaker 5: the Brewers' depth got to the Padres a little bit.
- 46:33Speaker 5: But again, I think you could write the same narrative
- 46:37Speaker 5: and say, wow, I can't believe the Brewers lost this series.
- 46:40Speaker 5: That's how close I feel like this series could have been.
- 46:44Speaker 5: And it came down to a couple of key, huge moments.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, and you got to wonder how the
- 46:50Speaker 1: Cubs are feeling right now, because this was a Padre
- 46:53Speaker 1: team that was not playing very well. They were below 500.
- 46:56Speaker 1: They were in 11th place in July and they had
- 46:59Speaker 1: won 19 of 22. before they lost three or four
- 47:03Speaker 1: here to the Brewers. And the Cubs were part of
- 47:06Speaker 1: that victim. All right, so we got ourselves what appears
- 47:08Speaker 1: to be a real juicy, tasty NLCS. So let's get
- 47:13Speaker 1: to the predictions with Capit. It is presented by Lids. Kratzy,
- 47:18Speaker 1: which team, Cap, are you going to be repping between Brewers, Dodgers?
- 47:24Speaker 5: I already have it on because I think it's going
- 47:26Speaker 5: to be the eventual World Series champion. I think the
- 47:31Speaker 5: The Brewers are going to be the team that comes
- 47:34Speaker 5: out on top here. I was on the original team
- 47:36Speaker 5: in 18 that we fell short of the Dodgers in
- 47:40Speaker 5: Game 7. I don't think the Dodgers necessarily out-hit us,
- 47:46Speaker 5: necessarily out-pitched us that year. It was just they got
- 47:51Speaker 5: some key hits.
- 47:53Speaker 1: We did not.
- 47:54Speaker 5: And I think it's going to be the exact same
- 47:56Speaker 5: this year. As much as I don't like seeing teams–
- 48:00Speaker 5: The two best teams are in the National League right now.
- 48:02Speaker 5: Nothing against the Rays. I believe that this series is
- 48:06Speaker 5: the World Series champion. And I believe, as I'm wearing
- 48:11Speaker 5: my Brewers hat here, my Father's Day Brewers hat from Lids,
- 48:15Speaker 5: so sick, that I think the Brewers' depth in their
- 48:21Speaker 5: pitching staff is going to outlast this up-and-down Dodgers lineup
- 48:27Speaker 5: and outlast... the depth in the starting rotation that I
- 48:31Speaker 5: think the Dodgers have.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Very nice. Very nice.
- 48:35Speaker 3: So I got two hats here from Lids. I just
- 48:37Speaker 3: took my hat off. They're really nice. Kratzy, the more
- 48:40Speaker 3: I think about this, the more I think it's going
- 48:43Speaker 3: to be one of the most, it was going to
- 48:44Speaker 3: be one of the biggest series that was going to
- 48:46Speaker 3: go down in history as one of the best seven
- 48:48Speaker 3: game series that we're going to see. My only issue,
- 48:53Speaker 3: I'm telling you right now, I want this Brewer team
- 48:55Speaker 3: to win, but my only issue is Scooble twice, Yamamoto twice,
- 49:01Speaker 3: and I think they're not going to find a way
- 49:03Speaker 3: to beat those two guys. Yeah, I know they got Mezarowski.
- 49:07Speaker 3: I know they have Henderson. I know they have those guys,
- 49:09Speaker 3: but I'm going with veteran. I'm going with been there
- 49:12Speaker 3: before in seven games. I think I'm going to go
- 49:15Speaker 3: with the L.A.
- 49:15Speaker 2: Dodgers.
- 49:16Speaker 3: As much as I don't want to do this, I'm
- 49:18Speaker 3: going to say the Dodgers find a way to win
- 49:21Speaker 3: that series.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Which speaks to this conversation about the advantage that the
- 49:27Speaker 1: deeper team has in seven games. And you just articulated it. Great.
- 49:32Speaker 1: The idea that you get Yamamoto twice. and you get
- 49:35Speaker 1: Scooble twice, and we can throw Glasnow in there. Look,
- 49:40Speaker 1: I think the seesaw is pretty damn even here, and
- 49:43Speaker 1: I do think most of the country is going to
- 49:45Speaker 1: be rooting for the Brewers in that series, but I
- 49:48Speaker 1: do think the seesaw tends to tip a little bit
- 49:51Speaker 1: towards L.A. because over seven games, that extreme quality and
- 49:57Speaker 1: depth should overrun L.A. what the brewers are bringing and
- 50:02Speaker 1: the brewers are bringing a lot, but I think the
- 50:05Speaker 1: brewers are going to have the world with them. I,
- 50:07Speaker 1: I agree with you, Todd, on the amount of times
- 50:10Speaker 1: you get to parade Yamamoto and scuba out there.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:15Speaker 1: And five games, I'm all about the brew crew, seven games,
- 50:22Speaker 1: a different world. The home field advantage is a big
- 50:24Speaker 1: deal for Milwaukee. I mean, they're going to be going nuts.
- 50:27Speaker 2: I agree.
- 50:27Speaker 3: But I do think L.A. doesn't mind playing on the road.
- 50:30Speaker 3: I think that's one of their specialties.
- 50:33Speaker 1: You're right.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Yeah, especially in the playoffs. So, God, I would love
- 50:39Speaker 3: to see Milwaukee win. And I still think they got
- 50:41Speaker 3: a really good shot knowing who they are and how
- 50:44Speaker 3: they played. But history tends to side with this squad
- 50:48Speaker 3: right here. And you've seen what Milwaukee does sometimes. So,
- 50:51Speaker 3: hopefully it's different for Pat Murphy.
- 50:53Speaker 2: I'm rooting for him.
- 50:54Speaker 1: That lid looks good on you, by the way. Dodger guy, huh?
- 50:57Speaker 1: West Coast.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Hold on. It fell down.
- 51:01Speaker 1: West Coast. Dodger Frazier. He's definitely a West Coast guy, Carl.
- 51:05Speaker 1: You've worked with him enough.
- 51:07Speaker 3: He puts on a nice blue hat.
- 51:09Speaker 2: I like the white.
- 51:10Speaker 1: I like the white. Hey, Frazier, I just saw your
- 51:13Speaker 1: boy Johnny Mack just put his house up in Malibu
- 51:16Speaker 1: for 35 mil. Any interest?
- 51:19Speaker 2: Who did?
- 51:20Speaker 1: John McEnroe's got a house in Malibu right on the water.
- 51:22Speaker 2: 35 mil. You're the only one here that can buy
- 51:26Speaker 2: that house. No, no, no.
- 51:29Speaker 1: No, no, no. My cabin is presented by Lids. That's

- 51:52Speaker 1: presented by Fox One, the Athletics 21 and 24 Ohio
- 51:56Speaker 1: Sports Writer of the Year. Reporting Live is presented by
- 51:59Speaker 1: Fox One. We are with Zach Meisel, the senior writer
- 52:01Speaker 1: for The Athletic, covering the Guardians and Major League Baseball.
- 52:04Speaker 1: White Sox lead this series 2-1. Cleveland won the game
- 52:07Speaker 1: last night 9-3. There were a lot of good things
- 52:09Speaker 1: that happened for the Guardians, including striking out a lot
- 52:12Speaker 1: of White Sox hitters. One of the things that may
- 52:15Speaker 1: have flown under the radar because he hasn't been what
- 52:18Speaker 1: you'd expect, was this resurgence of Jose Ramirez. Now, given
- 52:23Speaker 1: his injury, Jack, and the idea that yesterday he put
- 52:26Speaker 1: together one of his best postseason games ever, is it
- 52:30Speaker 1: an injury that you think he can kind of put
- 52:33Speaker 1: in the back of the car and carry on from here?
- 52:38Speaker 1: Is it a momentum type game? Or is this really
- 52:41Speaker 1: something that's hit or miss and it depends how it
- 52:43Speaker 1: feels when he wakes up? That one.
- 52:47Speaker 7: What's up, guys?
- 52:48Speaker 4: I think it's, You know, I've never broken my hammate bone,
- 52:52Speaker 4: so it's hard for me to relate to, you know,
- 52:55Speaker 4: if it was a sprained ankle or something, maybe everybody
- 52:57Speaker 4: on their couch could understand what he was dealing with.
- 53:00Speaker 4: But I know as a hitter, he feels it on
- 53:04Speaker 4: certain swings. He feels it, he said, when catching certain pop-ups.
- 53:07Speaker 4: And every day is kind of a journey, you know.
- 53:11Speaker 4: He doesn't know, like, when it's going to be most
- 53:13Speaker 4: uncomfortable for And if you look at his numbers, he
- 53:16Speaker 4: came back in late July. He had a sub 600
- 53:19Speaker 4: OPS the final two months, but there were pockets in
- 53:22Speaker 4: there where, you know, like in late September, he had
- 53:25Speaker 4: four consecutive multi-hit games.
- 53:28Speaker 7: And you guys know this, like.
- 53:29Speaker 4: He can affect the game in so many ways where
- 53:32Speaker 4: it doesn't have to be power. You know, you saw
- 53:34Speaker 4: it yesterday. He made a great diving stop at a
- 53:37Speaker 4: key moment. He stole a base. He sprinted home on
- 53:40Speaker 4: a contact plane, manufactured a run, dropped in a couple hits.
- 53:44Speaker 7: So, I think that's been the big thing.
- 53:47Speaker 4: I was looking at his career playoff numbers, and it's
- 53:50Speaker 4: been kind of disappointing.
- 53:52Speaker 7: I was trying.
- 53:53Speaker 4: To think of what his signature moment in the playoffs is,
- 53:57Speaker 4: and he's had a couple of home runs at key times.
- 54:00Speaker 4: But there's not that one late in the playoffs where
- 54:03Speaker 4: everyone can point to and remember, hey, remember when Ramirez
- 54:06Speaker 4: put the team on his back and hit that three-run
- 54:08Speaker 4: homer in the eighth inning on October 22nd. And when
- 54:13Speaker 4: I was looking through his game logs and trying to
- 54:15Speaker 4: find the signature moment, the one stat that stood out
- 54:18Speaker 4: to me the most was before yesterday in 47 career
- 54:21Speaker 4: playoff games, Jose Ramirez had two stolen bases. This is
- 54:25Speaker 4: a guy who steals 35-40 every year. So he's been
- 54:29Speaker 4: kind of uncharacteristic in October, and it's difficult for him
- 54:34Speaker 4: to be the player he wants to be right now
- 54:35Speaker 4: because he's not 100%, but he reminded us in Game
- 54:38Speaker 4: 3 yesterday that that there are still ways for him
- 54:42Speaker 4: to contribute. And he stole that base, had a couple
- 54:45Speaker 4: of hits, and he was key.
- 54:48Speaker 5: We heard all about Dave Roberts sticking his head in
- 54:51Speaker 5: the hitters meeting and sprinkling the magic dust in the
- 54:54Speaker 5: Dodgers hitters. Went, oh yeah, now we can have great
- 54:58Speaker 5: at-bats against Chris Sale. Was there a meeting that Steven
- 55:01Speaker 5: Vogt or somebody said, because They hit yesterday. They hit
- 55:06Speaker 5: against all the exact same pitchers that they've been dominated,
- 55:09Speaker 5: but they all did it in the same way. It
- 55:11Speaker 5: was low liners to the opposite field that we hadn't
- 55:15Speaker 5: seen at all in the series. Is that something that
- 55:19Speaker 5: was a concerted effort?
- 55:21Speaker 1: Do you know?
- 55:22Speaker 5: Or was it something that they made the actual adjustment
- 55:27Speaker 5: to what they weren't doing in the first two games
- 55:30Speaker 5: of the series?
- 55:32Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, you guys know this from.
- 55:35Speaker 4: Your hitting coaches are your therapists a lot of the time, right?
- 55:37Speaker 4: And so they believed as game two went on that
- 55:43Speaker 4: they were on the right track and they were hitting
- 55:47Speaker 4: the ball harder and they were not getting rewarded with
- 55:49Speaker 4: it until Joe Adele hit one 413 feet off the
- 55:52Speaker 4: wall and center that narrowly missed being a home run.
- 55:56Speaker 4: But they left that game feeling that even though they
- 55:59Speaker 4: didn't have the results, the approach was so much better
- 56:02Speaker 4: in game two. than it was in game one, you know,
- 56:05Speaker 4: in game one, Grant Taylor through the final four innings,
- 56:07Speaker 4: he only needed 42 pitches and the guardians were just
- 56:10Speaker 4: up there hacking. And, um, even in the ninth inning,
- 56:13Speaker 4: just all three guys struck out on curve balls in
- 56:16Speaker 4: the dirt. So they felt like the at-bats are better
- 56:19Speaker 4: in game two. And then it's up to the hitting
- 56:20Speaker 4: coaches to push that narrative of just stick with this.
- 56:24Speaker 4: I promise it's going to turn around like we're doing
- 56:27Speaker 4: the right things. We've already made strides in this series.
- 56:30Speaker 4: And so then you get to game three, and in
- 56:32Speaker 4: the first inning, Jose Ramirez hits one 108 off the bat.
- 56:34Speaker 4: Gritchick makes a diving catch, and you're thinking, you know,
- 56:37Speaker 4: there might not be enough time for it to turn around.
- 56:39Speaker 7: Who knows?
- 56:40Speaker 4: And the baseball gods have a funny way of working
- 56:43Speaker 4: where the hit that allows everybody to exhale is Joe
- 56:48Speaker 4: Adele just hitting a grounder down the right field line
- 56:51Speaker 4: that results in a three-run triple. So you never know
- 56:54Speaker 4: when that dam is going to break, and I think
- 56:57Speaker 4: the good hitting coaches probably– are the ones who can
- 57:00Speaker 4: tell you just trust the process and you believe them.
- 57:03Speaker 4: You buy into it. You're convinced of it. And I
- 57:06Speaker 4: think that played a part in turning things around in
- 57:08Speaker 4: game three. And once they saw that first big hit drop,
- 57:12Speaker 4: you know, from there, it felt like everybody was comfortable
- 57:15Speaker 4: and they had good at bats the rest of the game.
- 57:17Speaker 4: You know, they walked 10 times yesterday. I think that's
- 57:20Speaker 4: the key. They were facing elimination and didn't feel like
- 57:23Speaker 4: they were pressing.
- 57:24Speaker 7: They were patient.
- 57:26Speaker 1: You mean they actually swung at pitches in the zone
- 57:28Speaker 1: instead of ones that were outside the zone. That's a
- 57:30Speaker 1: novel thing. Before we get the next question to Zach,
- 57:33Speaker 1: I want to ask Frej, because Zach brought it up, Todd,
- 57:36Speaker 1: how many therapists have you seen over your baseball career
- 57:41Speaker 1: that helped put you in the right frame of mind?
- 57:44Speaker 1: This is a big hot-button topic. You know, private hitting coaches,
- 57:49Speaker 1: the team's hitting coaches. Who in the world are you
- 57:52Speaker 1: listening to? Or did you only listen... to the guy
- 57:55Speaker 1: in the mirror. How'd that work for you?
- 57:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't have anybody.
- 58:00Speaker 1: I didn't think so.
- 58:01Speaker 3: No, it was just, I would make a phone call
- 58:04Speaker 3: to my brother or something because he's been there before
- 58:06Speaker 3: and have a conversation. But other than that, it's up here.
- 58:10Speaker 3: You know, I'm not saying, a lot of people might
- 58:14Speaker 3: have some issues.
- 58:15Speaker 2: That's fine. Like, yeah, you want to get some help.
- 58:17Speaker 3: But for me, I was mentally strong and understandably I
- 58:20Speaker 3: look myself in the mirror and I just remember stuff
- 58:22Speaker 3: my dad used to say back in the day, you know,
- 58:24Speaker 3: who you represent, you know, your family, your name and
- 58:27Speaker 3: all that stuff.
- 58:28Speaker 2: And that's basically what I did.
- 58:30Speaker 3: So, yeah, I mean, listen, people have that now and
- 58:34Speaker 3: there's a lot of avenues they can go to. So
- 58:37Speaker 3: that's just part of the game right now. My question
- 58:42Speaker 3: that I wanted to talk about a little bit now
- 58:44Speaker 3: that the momentum kind of switched a little bit. Do
- 58:47Speaker 3: you see this Cleveland Guardian team making waves here and
- 58:51Speaker 3: pushing to win not only game four, but get back
- 58:54Speaker 3: home and win game five? I mean, momentum is a
- 58:57Speaker 3: huge thing here. How do you see this one really
- 58:59Speaker 3: playing out if you had to decide?
- 59:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:04Speaker 4: So with the caveat that the atmosphere should be electric
- 59:08Speaker 4: and this time of year, you absolutely never know what
- 59:11Speaker 4: hits are going to fall in or if a pitcher
- 59:13Speaker 4: is going to have it on a particular day. This
- 59:16Speaker 4: game four was always the game that was going to
- 59:19Speaker 4: be set up most favorably for Cleveland because they've got
- 59:22Speaker 4: Parker Messick on regular rest. He's their ace and the
- 59:26Speaker 4: White Sox are with their pitching chaos and leaning so
- 59:30Speaker 4: heavily on the bullpen, they've got to do this for
- 59:33Speaker 4: a second day in a row, which they haven't had
- 59:36Speaker 4: to do a lot of in the post season. So,
- 59:39Speaker 4: you know, Hagan Smith's going to start for them, but
- 59:41Speaker 4: Hagan Smith threw 21 pitches yesterday and they've tried to, to,
- 59:44Speaker 4: to coddle him a little bit. So how sharp will
- 59:48Speaker 4: he be? You know, we've seen Sean Newcomb get used
- 59:51Speaker 4: a ton. Grant Taylor is rested and that's big for Chicago.
- 59:55Speaker 4: So he can certainly go, you know, two, three, who
- 59:58Speaker 4: knows how many innings, but they're going to have to
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: piece this together. The white socks, you know, with Jordan
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: Hicks and Eric Fetty and Anthony K and, uh, they
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: used a lot of pitchers yesterday. And meanwhile, the guardians
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: can throw Parker Messick for however long he, he can go.
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: And they've got Kate Smith lurking at the backend. So
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: it feels like this is one, the guardians were always
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: hoping would play out this way. Um, and then you
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: can send it to a game five where anything can happen.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: So it's set up well, but also these two teams
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: all year, they've now played 16 times. It feels like
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: every single game has been dramatic and come down to
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: one key pitch here or there. So I would expect
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: more of the same tonight.
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: If the Guardians lose tonight, does it lean back to
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: the fact, I know the score wasn't 9-3 at the time,
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: But it's going to be because their pitching got tired
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: or they didn't hit, whatever it is, but leaning back
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: to Foster Griffin coming out of that game. Did that
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: feel a little scripted by a manager in Steven Vogt
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: that I don't see scripting things just because of how
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: dominant Foster Griffin was at that point in the game?
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: Yeah, it could be.
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: You know, they didn't tip their hand at all on
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: what they were going to do. We had seen Daniel
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: Espino and Joey Cantillo kind of be the partnership that
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: they were leaning on in that role over the last
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: few weeks. And it had worked really well. And then
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: you see Foster Griffin was warming up like two pitches
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: into the game. And so they clearly had this plan
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: for a little bit. And I think everybody was surprised.
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: Stephen Kwan said he had a jump scare when he
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: watched Foster Griffin jog in in the first inning. He
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: didn't even know Foster Griffin was in the bullpen. The
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: guy hadn't pitched in two weeks. So, I don't know
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: if they just didn't want to press their luck just
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: because he was so effective and they didn't really know
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: what to expect from him. There's one wild card here,
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: and I'm not quite sure what to make of it yet.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: I don't know what they're going to do. But, you know,
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: Gavin Williams, Stephen Vogt said he was unavailable yesterday. Yesterday
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: would have been his day to throw a pen. Gavin
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: said he did not throw a side session. He did
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: not throw a side session, and he actually spent the
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: game in the bullpen. He threw 98 pitches in game two.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: He would be on regular rest for game five. I'm
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: just a little curious if he's available in the bullpen
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: and they might not trust Hunter Gattis right now, as
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: you said. They used a ton of guys in game three.
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: So if you need to bridge the gap to Cade Smith,
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: do you go with Gavin Williams for an inning or
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: two and just say, we're just trying to survive. We're
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: just trying to get to a game five and we'll
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: figure that out. if we do it, if we do survive.
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: I'm very curious to see what, what the plan is there.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Interesting. I mean, that's, that's a good seed to plant
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: in there and we'll keep an eye on where he
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: starts the game. And if he's out there, boy, I
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: can't think of a more fine line. It's a one
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: run game and the guardians are down in the fifth inning.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Is he the guy you go to to keep it one?
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: You got to chase a win because you got to
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: get a win and there is no game five, but
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: In an ideal world, obviously, like it worked out for
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Mizorowski and the Brewers, you have him available for that game.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: You've got a pretty cool feature that came out in October.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: You just talked about kind of interesting teammates, roommates, bedfellows.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: Tell us a little bit about Vogt and Arnerich and
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: how that whole thing works. I think that's pretty interesting.
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's the manager and the bench coach, and
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: it's hard to tell the difference between the two.
- 1:03:39Speaker 7: They look the same.
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: They're about the same size, similar age. the same exact
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: beard with like patches of gray in the same spots.
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: It's uncanny. And so they've, you know, they've, this dates back.
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: About four or five years where Arnerich was coaching in
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: Seattle for a while.
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: Um, he started.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: Hearing from more and more people, you know, you look
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: like this guy on, on the A's Steven vote and
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: they had never met and then vote retired. He was
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: interviewing for a coaching position with the Mariners and lo
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: and behold, these guys are on the same staff. So
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: they became good friends that year. Steven Vogt bought him
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: a pair of Step Brothers socks, you know, with Will
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: Ferrell and John C. Reilly, and they joked that they
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: were like those guys. And then Craig Albernaz was Vogt's
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: bench coach in Cleveland. Albernaz goes to Baltimore to become
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: their manager. Vogt needs a bench coach. Arnerich is the
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: perfect fit, right? So Arnerich shows up to his interview
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: in Cleveland. He lifts his pant leg. There are the
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: Step Brothers socks with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly's
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: faces on them. So, you know, Steven Vogt lives, he's
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: managing in Cleveland. His family still lives in the Pacific Northwest.
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: He's lonely for a few months of the year when
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: the kids are in school. So Arnerich got the job.
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: Vogt said, hey, want to move in? I got a
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: spare bedroom in my basement. Arnerich said yes. And it's
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: become like therapeutic for them. You know, they go home
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: after a long day at the ballpark. They sit on
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: the couch. They turn on a West Coast game. They
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: debrief about the game that just happened. They plan ahead
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: for the next day. And those are conversations most people
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: have at the ballpark. But I think sometimes when it's
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: a long day at the ballpark, you just want to
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: go home and sit on the couch and you can
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: talk shop there. So it's been a fun relationship. I
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: think it's helped both of them. And, you know, they,
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: you know, they've joked votes. Family went back to the
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: Pacific Northwest at the start of September because for the
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: new school year, Arnerich was staying at a hotel for
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: a couple months. He moves back in and they both joked.
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: Now we're going to start winning. And lo and behold,
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: that's what happened.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: And you mentioned Hunter Gattis. Can you elaborate a little
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: bit more? Because yesterday looked uncanny. Unlike Hunter Gattis, where
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: it was almost every pitch was lost glove side, glove side.
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: Was there something that he's been dealing with? Has he gone.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: Through this throughout the year? Because I haven't seen every
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Guardians game.
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I think he just didn't have command and maybe
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: was trying to be too fine with his slider. And
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: the problem was there was traffic and he just hit
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: back-to-back guys.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: It was... I.
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: Can imagine the pressure you're feeling when you don't have
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: your command and you're trying to figure out how to
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: get ahead of a hitter and you have to because
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: the bases are loaded. But if you don't have it
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: and you're trying to place this slider perfectly and, you know,
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: then he's... he's hitting guys and he's bringing in a
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: run and it's, it could go haywire really quickly. So
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: the key for him, like he's, he's always been so
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: good at just throwing strikes and getting ahead. Like he
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: doesn't have the most overpowering stuff and his strikeout numbers
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: for a backend reliever are not, they're not going to
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: jump off the page.
- 1:06:54Speaker 7: So when he doesn't have.
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: It, you know, and the problem is, you know, the
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: rules now you got to face three batters. I think
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: we could tell from batter one that he didn't have
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: a yesterday and, So now you've got.
- 1:07:06Speaker 7: To pick the right spots to use him.
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: The White Sox have such a good balanced lineup of
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: lefties and righties, guys they can turn to off the bench.
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: Randall Gritchick against a lefty, Ben Intendi against a righty.
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: So you have to pick your spots, I think, not
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: just with him, but like Eric Sabrowski in Game 2.
- 1:07:24Speaker 7: It was a similar deal.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Quick question for you. I know that they're focused on
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: each other, and certainly from your perspective, they're dealing with
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: the White Sox. I'm wondering... when and if the Yankees
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: and Rays' conversation came up, was there any feeling from
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: the room about the outcome of the series, about who
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: was the better team, about any of that, who we'd
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: rather face, yada, yada, yada? How aware were they of
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: the other series going on?
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: No, I think they just wanted to know what time
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: they were going to play game four. They certainly know
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: those teams well, right? It feels like the Guardians.
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: In recent years, the guardian season has ended against the
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: Yankees in the post season quite a bit lately. And
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: the guardians and rays have made a ton of trades
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: over the years. Junior common arrow obviously came from Cleveland's
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: organization when he was a teenager. So there's plenty of
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: familiarity there as well. So no surprises, I think like there,
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: but you know, they're, they've got a lot on their plate,
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: just trying to dig out of the hole that.
- 1:08:28Speaker 7: They created for themselves in this series.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: So, If they are fortunate enough to advance, who knows
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: what pitchers will be available when, but I think they'll
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: just be thrilled and relieved that they have a chance
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: to sort all that out.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: They got a chance to live for another day. We'll
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: keep an eye on Williams.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Good story.
