- 7:09Speaker 2: Don't forget sales at vtdashworld dot com if you want
- 7:12Speaker 2: to do some advertising with Central Format's favorite weekly newspaper,
- 7:17Speaker 2: Deb Phillips, Sweethearts and Heroes on a Wednesday morning, we
- 7:21Speaker 2: have been connected with them now for quite a bit,
- 7:26Speaker 2: a student empowerment and empathy activation team. And the best
- 7:32Speaker 2: part is they've got roots right here in from out
- 7:34Speaker 2: where it all started. They make great strides far beyond
- 7:39Speaker 2: the classroom by doing a lot of things, among them
- 7:44Speaker 2: spreading kindness I think first and foremost, spreading understanding empathy,
- 7:52Speaker 2: and one of the big things that they hang their
- 7:55Speaker 2: hat on is hope and in doing so, empowering children
- 8:02Speaker 2: to be the best that they can be, preventing hopelessness,
- 8:07Speaker 2: preventing suicide, preventing bullying in the classroom and outside of
- 8:14Speaker 2: the classroom. If your child's school is not yet connected
- 8:20Speaker 2: with Sweethearts and Heroes, I'm not sure what you're waiting for.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Get on Sweethearts and Heroes dot com as soon as
- 8:30Speaker 2: you can. The school year is going to be starting soon.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Josiah McKeon is with us, the brother of Brian who
- 8:40Speaker 2: was just on Aired Out a couple of weeks ago.
- 8:44Speaker 2: And Joe, welcome to aired Out man. It is a
- 8:48Speaker 2: pleasure to have you with me.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Yeah, Jaden, real great pleasure to meet.
- 8:53Speaker 3: You, buddy, I've heard so much about you.
- 8:56Speaker 2: First of all, before we even get started this morning, uh,
- 9:01Speaker 2: congratulations son. Becoming a dad? What is when? When did
- 9:06Speaker 2: you become a dad? Here for the what second time?
- 9:09Speaker 4: Yeah, second time? On twelve, twenty six, on July ninth.
- 9:14Speaker 3: July ninth, Man, you are you're in the thick of
- 9:19Speaker 3: it right now.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Brother, Oh man, you know it's funny you say that.
- 9:23Speaker 4: That's that's what my grandfather said my entire life. You know,
- 9:26Speaker 4: every new every new adventure in life. Ah, Joe, you're
- 9:32Speaker 4: you're in the thick of it now.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Yeah. Is that what he used to say? Seriously?
- 9:36Speaker 4: Oh yeah, every time I get into something and we
- 9:40Speaker 4: would we would talk and he would just, uh, he
- 9:43Speaker 4: would say, man, you're you're in the thick of it now,
- 9:46Speaker 4: and and I feel like there's more thick of it
- 9:51Speaker 4: to come.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Yes, there is, Uh, yes, there is.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Uh.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I'm a dad at fifty four. Only one little girl
- 9:57Speaker 3: and that is puff lent Tea.
- 10:01Speaker 5: How old is she?
- 10:02Speaker 3: She's ten?
- 10:03Speaker 2: Ben Oh my goodness, Oh yeah, late Bloomer for this
- 10:08Speaker 2: old fellow man. But it's a ride, it is a right,
- 10:11Speaker 2: and it will it is and will be the best
- 10:17Speaker 2: thing that you ever will be is a father.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Yeah, Now I believe that with my whole heart.
- 10:27Speaker 4: It's it's something I've always dreamed about and was blessed
- 10:33Speaker 4: with it unexpectedly, not children unexpectedly, but just the marriage.
- 10:39Speaker 4: And then you know, we had Raphael about two years
- 10:44Speaker 4: ago now, August thirtieth, twenty twenty three, and he's just
- 10:48Speaker 4: been a big part of my heart.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Yeah, man, that's that's so cool. You know, Leon was
- 10:55Speaker 2: telling me that you graduated with a Bachelor of Science
- 11:01Speaker 2: from the Pennsylvania College of Technology in william Support. Did
- 11:07Speaker 2: you think at any point that you were going to
- 11:11Speaker 2: become a circle beaverer for sweethearts and heroes after graduation.
- 11:18Speaker 4: No, not after graduation whatsoever. I always have enjoyed working
- 11:24Speaker 4: with students. It's been one of the things that I
- 11:27Speaker 4: really love to do. And I've known tom My whole life.
- 11:33Speaker 4: I've known about what he's been doing for a while,
- 11:36Speaker 4: maybe not quite as in depth as especially the last year.
- 11:40Speaker 5: And a half. But no, I didn't think I was
- 11:44Speaker 5: going to be down this road.
- 11:45Speaker 4: In fact, I've had the opportunity to talk to a
- 11:46Speaker 4: number of students, you know, who are thinking about just
- 11:50Speaker 4: their careers and what they're going to do, and they're
- 11:52Speaker 4: stressed out about it, but they have these dreams too,
- 11:57Speaker 4: and I've just been able to look at them and say, listen,
- 12:00Speaker 4: I graduated with a welding engineering degree, and now I'm
- 12:06Speaker 4: getting to play games with students and and just have
- 12:08Speaker 4: conversations like I didn't think I would be here where
- 12:11Speaker 4: I want to be, but but it was always a
- 12:13Speaker 4: dream of mine to do something like this.
- 12:16Speaker 3: And you and you love what you do.
- 12:20Speaker 5: I do I do.
- 12:23Speaker 4: I love having conversations with people I always have and
- 12:29Speaker 4: students in particular. I was a youth group leader for
- 12:33Speaker 4: a number of years and a camp counselor, and yeah,
- 12:38Speaker 4: I just I absolutely love it.
- 12:40Speaker 5: I like the especially, I love the circles. I love
- 12:43Speaker 5: the games.
- 12:45Speaker 4: I'm pretty competitive, so I get to you get to
- 12:48Speaker 4: play all these different games with students. But but I
- 12:51Speaker 4: really love the one on one interactions that this uh
- 12:54Speaker 4: that this job affords me. And getting to make these
- 12:58Speaker 4: connections even outside of a circle, whether it's after a circle,
- 13:02Speaker 4: whether it's playing a quick game of pickup basketball in
- 13:05Speaker 4: the gym with some students, and just getting to have
- 13:08Speaker 4: these one on one conversations is just really dear to
- 13:11Speaker 4: my art.
- 13:12Speaker 2: I love to say every Wednesday, when I have someone
- 13:16Speaker 2: on from sweethearts and heroes.
- 13:19Speaker 3: What is circle?
- 13:21Speaker 2: Because it's important that listeners have a clear concept of
- 13:28Speaker 2: what we're talking about, and not everybody is familiar with
- 13:32Speaker 2: with circle and how effective it is. What what's your
- 13:36Speaker 2: definition of it? Before we we dive into what a
- 13:39Speaker 2: weaver is?
- 13:42Speaker 3: What is circle?
- 13:45Speaker 5: Well Man, Circle is a process that allows.
- 13:54Speaker 4: The people, the participants within the circle to not only.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Hear other perspectives, but.
- 14:02Speaker 4: To grow empathy.
- 14:06Speaker 5: And it has a number of pieces to it.
- 14:11Speaker 4: When you talk about playing games with students, you know,
- 14:13Speaker 4: they're not just games. We call them activators, but they're
- 14:18Speaker 4: developed to help build some of these core competencies that
- 14:21Speaker 4: we're looking for human skills.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Uh.
- 14:27Speaker 5: And then you know, we get.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Into some questions brought by a weaver, but really they're
- 14:34Speaker 4: just questions.
- 14:36Speaker 5: To bring about conversation.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Between individuals and a group where everybody gets a chance
- 14:44Speaker 4: to be heard.
- 14:46Speaker 5: And yeah, it's in in in uh, in hearing different perspectives.
- 14:51Speaker 4: You You, it's almost impossible not to start wiring this
- 14:56Speaker 4: thing called empathy within your brains.
- 15:01Speaker 3: That's what uh, that's what Tom has said to me.
- 15:05Speaker 3: It is.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Literally impossible two to not rewire your brain or at
- 15:15Speaker 2: least kick those those existing circuits into overdrive when you
- 15:20Speaker 2: are forced to sit and listen to others and we
- 15:27Speaker 2: we we often, as you know, we often really never
- 15:31Speaker 2: know what's a hot button for someone and what's going
- 15:36Speaker 2: to come out of somebody's mouth.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I get surprised every day in my job. There's
- 15:43Speaker 4: there's not a circle that I do that. You know,
- 15:47Speaker 4: I don't find myself just going huh, I didn't expect
- 15:52Speaker 4: that from that person, or wow, I just have never
- 15:56Speaker 4: even thought about it. You know, there's an infinite amount
- 15:59Speaker 4: of perspective is out there and uh and so yeah,
- 16:04Speaker 4: I I hear stuff all the time that and and
- 16:08Speaker 4: I've pressed a few hot buttons myself, not knowing that
- 16:13Speaker 4: that was going to happen.
- 16:16Speaker 2: When you're when you're sitting around in a literally around
- 16:22Speaker 2: in a circle, and you are forced to to listen
- 16:27Speaker 2: to others and and tell their their stories, their perspective,
- 16:31Speaker 2: their ideas. Some might go on for a couple of seconds,
- 16:37Speaker 2: some several minutes. It was not easy for me, and
- 16:42Speaker 2: I've I've said this pretty much every Wednesday my first
- 16:45Speaker 2: circle experience. Uh, and Tom was part of that circle.
- 16:50Speaker 2: It was not easy for me to sit and just listen.
- 16:56Speaker 2: I mean my rules here on the podcast are you
- 17:02Speaker 2: jump in anytime you want to jump in you And
- 17:07Speaker 2: Tom was like, no way, Jose. That's uh, that is
- 17:12Speaker 2: the opposite of circle. When it's your turn to speak,
- 17:15Speaker 2: then you speak, but otherwise you're listening.
- 17:19Speaker 3: That's it's not easy to do, man.
- 17:23Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, it's it's it's not And I think that's.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Probably one of the number one things that students and
- 17:34Speaker 4: teachers alike, uh struggle with. Not not students sometimes have
- 17:39Speaker 4: an easier time than teachers because sometimes perspectives come out
- 17:46Speaker 4: that may not be kind, may not be in keeping
- 17:50Speaker 4: with how the classroom is run, and and and that
- 17:53Speaker 4: can be difficult. And I actually have actually just had
- 17:57Speaker 4: a couple of different conversations with some teacher this week.
- 18:00Speaker 5: I was in Whitney Point.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Finishing up a program actually finish next Monday that Pat
- 18:08Speaker 4: Fish started over there, some student teacher.
- 18:12Speaker 5: Circle training, and I had a couple.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Of conversations with some teachers who were just like, how
- 18:19Speaker 4: do you how do you sit there and just not
- 18:22Speaker 4: say anything, especially when other students are speaking out of
- 18:26Speaker 4: turn and saying mean things. And I think my first
- 18:31Speaker 4: and foremost thing is practice you know you you do
- 18:37Speaker 4: it so often that that that you learn and and
- 18:41Speaker 4: and I really it's it's tied to a core value
- 18:43Speaker 4: of mine, you know. But but to genuinely listen to
- 18:47Speaker 4: another human being.
- 18:49Speaker 5: And I learned this from Tom. But you know, I
- 18:52Speaker 5: learn through experience, but through time.
- 18:55Speaker 4: You know that when you cut other people off, that
- 18:57Speaker 4: can hurt their feelings.
- 18:58Speaker 5: Yeah, you know.
- 19:00Speaker 4: I I tell students, you know, when I tell them that,
- 19:04Speaker 4: I say, you know, I used to think that, you know,
- 19:07Speaker 4: it didn't hurt my feelings when I got cut off,
- 19:10Speaker 4: because I started telling students that when I first started this,
- 19:13Speaker 4: oh well, it doesn't hurt my feelings, you know.
- 19:14Speaker 5: But I found that can hurt other people's feelings.
- 19:17Speaker 4: But I did a little more soul searching on that
- 19:21Speaker 4: one and realized that what actually does hurt my feelings.
- 19:25Speaker 5: It just depends on the situation.
- 19:27Speaker 4: And I'll usually give the example, you know, if I'm
- 19:29Speaker 4: really excited about something and I'm going to go and
- 19:32Speaker 4: tell my wife, hey, dear, yeah, this this new thing,
- 19:37Speaker 4: this new tool that I got. It's so and then
- 19:40Speaker 4: she just starts cutting me off and talking about some
- 19:44Speaker 4: duckling or something that she's hatching.
- 19:47Speaker 5: It hurts my feelings.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Yeah, but it has to be somebody you know, that that.
- 19:55Speaker 5: That you know I have that relationship with.
- 19:58Speaker 4: But then I'll look at the students and say, but
- 20:00Speaker 4: you know, if you're go and cut me off, it's
- 20:03Speaker 4: it's not gonna hurt my feelings, you know, in this context.
- 20:06Speaker 5: But it's different for everybody.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Right, Yeah it is.
- 20:10Speaker 2: And man I am I am so guilty of that
- 20:15Speaker 2: at home and trying so hard to take whatever my
- 20:21Speaker 2: questionuents are that I might have and just put them
- 20:27Speaker 2: aside and wait for the right time, which is again
- 20:30Speaker 2: so hard for me to do because I'm naturally an
- 20:34Speaker 2: inquisitive guy. And when I sat in that circle with
- 20:38Speaker 2: Tom and those students at Peru, man, it's like I
- 20:43Speaker 2: needed I needed a pen and a paper, which I
- 20:49Speaker 2: didn't have and I always have and that drove me nuts, man,
- 20:54Speaker 2: like it it killed me. And and when when that
- 20:57Speaker 2: circle was over, I was just filled with with so
- 21:00Speaker 2: many questions that I was just over overwhelmed and just
- 21:03Speaker 2: locked right up.
- 21:05Speaker 5: Mmm, now now do you so?
- 21:07Speaker 4: You usually when you have a question, it comes up
- 21:10Speaker 4: and you ask it right, And I would imagine that's
- 21:13Speaker 4: one of the reasons why your podcast does so well,
- 21:15Speaker 4: and why you're so inquisitive because you're good at asking questions,
- 21:21Speaker 4: but so that was very difficult for you, hunh to
- 21:24Speaker 4: not be able to ask those.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, big time. Who's who comes up.
- 21:29Speaker 2: With the the start of a circle event that that
- 21:38Speaker 2: if you're hosting this, do you do you go into
- 21:43Speaker 2: it the day before or the hour before with a
- 21:49Speaker 2: series of questions to get the conversation started? Do you
- 21:53Speaker 2: know what road you're going to go down? Or do
- 21:55Speaker 2: you just kind of wing it?
- 22:00Speaker 4: And that's a that's such a great question, you know
- 22:03Speaker 4: because my my, you know, the people before me and
- 22:09Speaker 4: sweethearts and heroes are pretty much in circle related stuff
- 22:12Speaker 4: are pretty much Tom and Pat, and both of which
- 22:17Speaker 4: are really really good on the fly, especially Pat. I
- 22:22Speaker 4: don't know if it's because of his wrapping background or not,
- 22:24Speaker 4: but he can just just wing it. And and that's
- 22:31Speaker 4: been that's actually been kind of a challenge for me, because.
- 22:35Speaker 5: You know, you go into this, you know, middle school.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Classroom, and and you go into it with a plan,
- 22:45Speaker 4: and that plan doesn't work at all, you know, because
- 22:51Speaker 4: every circle is different. So I I mean I I
- 22:54Speaker 4: do go into a plan, mainly because I really hate
- 22:59Speaker 4: being stressed out.
- 23:01Speaker 5: And actually, even though I love.
- 23:04Speaker 4: My job, this job stresses me out a ton because
- 23:08Speaker 4: I want to do a good job and I want
- 23:10Speaker 4: to I want to give the students and the teachers
- 23:14Speaker 4: the best experience that I can, and as a weaver,
- 23:20Speaker 4: some of that, some of that is relying on you
- 23:23Speaker 4: and how you can set up a question, how you
- 23:28Speaker 4: can tie it to some vulnerability even with yourself, and
- 23:33Speaker 4: so you know, I do pretty much every circle I do,
- 23:37Speaker 4: I totally come up with at least a loose plan
- 23:40Speaker 4: of what I'm going to ask, because I want to
- 23:44Speaker 4: go in with something.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Most of the time I always ask the first question.
- 23:49Speaker 4: I come up with, and I don't always come up
- 23:52Speaker 4: with them. We have a whole list of questions and
- 23:55Speaker 4: sometimes I'll pick from there, but I'll almost always ask
- 23:59Speaker 4: that first question, and then dependent on how that goes,
- 24:04Speaker 4: will really my hope is that that, you know, something
- 24:10Speaker 4: in my soul will be struck and I will be
- 24:14Speaker 4: able to follow my curiosity on one of those things.
- 24:18Speaker 4: And honestly, it's pretty much every circle, at least somebody
- 24:21Speaker 4: will say something that will strike me, and like I
- 24:25Speaker 4: said earlier, I don't go oh, And usually then I
- 24:29Speaker 4: will try to frame or base off my question following that,
- 24:35Speaker 4: sometimes just three or four and I now I got
- 24:38Speaker 4: to pick one, right, especially when you're doing a circle
- 24:41Speaker 4: for forty minutes. I mean, you get that first question
- 24:44Speaker 4: out and if people want to talk, you might not
- 24:48Speaker 4: even get the next question, you know. In so but
- 24:51Speaker 4: that's yeah, I kind of go in with a lose plan.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Because I don't like being stressed out.
- 24:56Speaker 4: And if I have at least a plan of what
- 24:58Speaker 4: activator I'm going to do and what first question I'm
- 25:01Speaker 4: going to ask, I usually can calm my nerves down enough,
- 25:05Speaker 4: you know, to then get through that and see where
- 25:08Speaker 4: I'm at and then kind of go and follow my
- 25:12Speaker 4: curiosity from there.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I've asked Tom, and I've also asked your brother, and
- 25:22Speaker 2: I think I've asked Pat, and I'm going to ask
- 25:26Speaker 2: you now.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Have you.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Left a circle event, a circle experience with high school
- 25:36Speaker 2: students and been so you just said the word struck
- 25:42Speaker 2: and been so struck that it has distracted you from
- 25:51Speaker 2: the rest of your day or consumed you oddly enough
- 26:01Speaker 2: where you're you're almost in a fog for the rest
- 26:05Speaker 2: of the day. I've seen Tom, and I know you
- 26:08Speaker 2: have to where he's he was so impacted that he's
- 26:19Speaker 2: temporarily almost like a zombie.
- 26:24Speaker 3: He has to.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Purge, he's got to talk about his his experience or
- 26:32Speaker 2: digest it, process it in his own time. Have you
- 26:37Speaker 2: ever Have you ever been like that? Have you ever
- 26:40Speaker 2: left a circle group and gotten into your car and
- 26:44Speaker 2: don't even remember the ride home?
- 26:48Speaker 5: Oh?
- 26:48Speaker 4: Yeah? Actually, I find more so though with middle schoolers. Wow, yeah, yeah,
- 26:57Speaker 4: and and and.
- 27:00Speaker 5: A lot of times.
- 27:01Speaker 4: For me, I don't know that it's necessarily a profound
- 27:06Speaker 4: concept that I hear from a student as.
- 27:10Speaker 5: Much as a profound story.
- 27:13Speaker 4: That or or just a struggle or a challenge that
- 27:17Speaker 4: they that they share and circle that's just gut wrenching.
- 27:23Speaker 5: I think that's what does it for me.
- 27:25Speaker 4: I've never really had it, like if I had a
- 27:28Speaker 4: circle in the morning and then I had, you know,
- 27:30Speaker 4: five six more circles, and never really have it affect
- 27:34Speaker 4: me like during that part of my day. I'm not
- 27:37Speaker 4: sure why that is for me, but I usually go
- 27:41Speaker 4: through the circle and then the entire circle day, and
- 27:46Speaker 4: then yeah, when I get into my.
- 27:48Speaker 5: Car, it starts to that.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Then it starts to hit me and I start to
- 27:54Speaker 4: think back to to some of those things, some of these,
- 28:01Speaker 4: like I said that, the struggles are really the big
- 28:03Speaker 4: ones that that hit me and I and I have
- 28:08Speaker 4: to at least talk to my wife about him. And
- 28:13Speaker 4: usually I'll talk to Tom too because he he he's
- 28:17Speaker 4: been through a number of those as well. But but
- 28:22Speaker 4: yet the struggles that some of these students go through,
- 28:25Speaker 4: I'll hop in and I'll just I like the word ruminate,
- 28:31Speaker 4: ruminate on it and just chew it up over and
- 28:34Speaker 4: over and over again. Just think and think and think
- 28:36Speaker 4: about it. And uh, yeah, it's it's kind of a tough.
- 28:41Speaker 4: It's kind of a tough part of the job because
- 28:44Speaker 4: you you get to hear and see quite a bit
- 28:49Speaker 4: of damage sometimes. But you know, I've also had through
- 28:53Speaker 4: that some really incredible experiences where you know, that same
- 28:59Speaker 4: student comes back to me it says, hey, thanks for
- 29:03Speaker 4: the conversation.
- 29:04Speaker 5: I'm doing a lot better now.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think those are the even more impactful ones,
- 29:10Speaker 4: you know, where you're like, whoa, you know, I said
- 29:13Speaker 4: like five words to you and they're like, yeah, that's
- 29:16Speaker 4: what I needed.
- 29:17Speaker 2: It's that amazing, that's incredible. And you know, we should say,
- 29:23Speaker 2: first of all, I mean the fact that you guys
- 29:25Speaker 2: are bringing this program into schools is so fantastic because
- 29:33Speaker 2: schools are places where we're supposed to learn the curriculum,
- 29:43Speaker 2: and but there's so much more that's going on that's
- 29:49Speaker 2: affecting children that they're bringing to school with them, things
- 29:55Speaker 2: that they're carrying throughout the day, into the classroom, out
- 30:00Speaker 2: of the classroom, on the way to school, on the
- 30:02Speaker 2: way home, And the fact that you guys are bringing
- 30:08Speaker 2: something that is a different form of learning is really
- 30:15Speaker 2: cool and frankly, something that I wish that I had
- 30:21Speaker 2: when I was in middle school and high school. I
- 30:25Speaker 2: don't know if it's a reflection of the sign of
- 30:29Speaker 2: times or or what, but just the fact that man
- 30:32Speaker 2: life is not easy and what kids have to deal
- 30:38Speaker 2: with today is unbelievable. And like you said earlier, everybody
- 30:46Speaker 2: has a different and unique story experience. But a lot
- 30:55Speaker 2: of what you guys do, we should say in circle,
- 30:59Speaker 2: is not just serious stuff too.
- 31:01Speaker 3: There's a lot of laughter. There's a lot of.
- 31:04Speaker 2: A lot of fun frankly that can come out of
- 31:07Speaker 2: a circle experience.
- 31:08Speaker 4: Right, Oh yeah, you know, yeah, I actually it's it's
- 31:16Speaker 4: interesting to bring that up that that's actually what I
- 31:19Speaker 4: rely heavily on personally, I'm usually uh, goofy somewhat in
- 31:27Speaker 4: in my circles and I.
- 31:31Speaker 5: I'll actually get a lot of teachers that will.
- 31:33Speaker 4: Come back to me and be like, hey, like you
- 31:36Speaker 4: know that was that was nice, but like we just
- 31:39Speaker 4: laughed a whole bunch, like there wasn't any like deep stuff. Yeah,
- 31:44Speaker 4: we'll get there, you know, to take it. I'd much
- 31:49Speaker 4: rather get these students out of class a lot of times,
- 31:55Speaker 4: not for every student, but a lot of times, you know,
- 31:58Speaker 4: the place where they really just don't want to be
- 32:00Speaker 4: in class, Sure, get them out of it, have them
- 32:04Speaker 4: come down or go into their classroom. My favorite, though,
- 32:08Speaker 4: is when they have to come down and they come
- 32:11Speaker 4: into the room that I'm in and there's this circle
- 32:15Speaker 4: of chairs and they're like, what is this?
- 32:20Speaker 3: We have to look at each other.
- 32:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not doing anything, and and you know, they'll
- 32:28Speaker 4: sit down ahead. I can't I can remember this one time.
- 32:32Speaker 4: I can't even remember where I was, but the student
- 32:36Speaker 4: comes in high schooler just comes in and says, what
- 32:41Speaker 4: is this?
- 32:41Speaker 5: Is this therapy?
- 32:43Speaker 4: I was like, well, I'm just gonna have some fun. Well,
- 32:46Speaker 4: I'm not doing anything. He sits down right next to me.
- 32:50Speaker 4: It's like, this is so stupid. Why do we have
- 32:52Speaker 4: to I was forced to be here. I said, yeah, man,
- 32:55Speaker 4: me too. He said, well, at least you get paid.
- 33:00Speaker 4: I was like, well, yeah, touche, you got me there.
- 33:02Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure. He's like, I'm not doing anything.
- 33:05Speaker 4: By the end of the circle, he was begging his
- 33:09Speaker 4: teacher to come back with the other half of his
- 33:13Speaker 4: class that was going to come down right after that.
- 33:15Speaker 5: And he did.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Him and his buddy did, and they were the only
- 33:18Speaker 4: two that were really like this is so dumb and
- 33:21Speaker 4: and and so, you know, especially for a first time
- 33:24Speaker 4: circle man, when when when students come in, my goal
- 33:28Speaker 4: is to make him laugh, to have some fun, to
- 33:32Speaker 4: get introduced to me, introduced to circle. So I just
- 33:36Speaker 4: make a bunch of jokes and and.
- 33:39Speaker 5: Pull out my diaper that I carry around.
- 33:43Speaker 3: You know, what's that? What's what's the story with that?
- 33:47Speaker 5: Oh man?
- 33:49Speaker 4: When I was first starting, Tom kind of just had
- 33:53Speaker 4: this idea, you know, I had my son and.
- 33:55Speaker 6: He's like, dude, you should you should like put some
- 33:58Speaker 6: rice in a bag and put it in a diaper
- 34:02Speaker 6: and just start chucking in at kids, and like, you know,
- 34:05Speaker 6: like you should pull it out and be like, oh
- 34:07Speaker 6: I can't believe that's in there.
- 34:08Speaker 4: I was changing my son this, you know. Yeah, a
- 34:10Speaker 4: one made come up with this whole story. And I
- 34:13Speaker 4: remember I did it once at the first school. I
- 34:16Speaker 4: was doing them kindergarteners through maybe third fourth grade, and
- 34:23Speaker 4: you know, I was like, Okay, I'm gonna try it,
- 34:25Speaker 4: and it kind of fail miserably, but it kind of
- 34:28Speaker 4: morphed into this little skit that I do really and
- 34:33Speaker 4: I had my superhero briefcase.
- 34:35Speaker 5: I'm sure you've seen Tom's.
- 34:36Speaker 4: Yes, I'm not sure if you've seen Pats, but Pat
- 34:41Speaker 4: has one. There's only three in existence, I tell kids,
- 34:45Speaker 4: and my buddy Tom bought all three of them.
- 34:48Speaker 5: And Pat's got one. He's got a bunch of bracelets, dang.
- 34:52Speaker 4: I mean hundreds of bracelets dangling off of his and
- 34:55Speaker 4: they they're all from students. He's got a story for
- 34:58Speaker 4: each one of them, and he remembers them all and
- 35:02Speaker 4: then mine.
- 35:04Speaker 5: It's got some crazy can could I grab it for you?
- 35:08Speaker 3: Yeah? Please?
- 35:10Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 35:10Speaker 3: Absolutely, man, I love it.
- 35:14Speaker 2: We're chatting this morning with Josiah with sweethearts and heroes.
- 35:23Speaker 3: If yeah, look at that.
- 35:27Speaker 4: So that's got a bunch of bracelets. I decided to
- 35:31Speaker 4: go with stickers. You know, honestly, I told you I
- 35:34Speaker 4: don't like being stressed. What I ended up doing was
- 35:37Speaker 4: when I was first starting, I had a bunch of
- 35:40Speaker 4: questions printed out on a late from a label maker
- 35:43Speaker 4: and I stuck them on here, and then I stuck
- 35:46Speaker 4: this one on from the summit that we had, and
- 35:49Speaker 4: then students just started sticking more stickers.
- 35:52Speaker 5: There's just a ton of different stickers from different students.
- 35:56Speaker 5: But yeah, so this is this is mine.
- 35:58Speaker 4: And Tom had been carrying this around in the back
- 36:01Speaker 4: of his car for probably about ten years, and I
- 36:04Speaker 4: tell kids it was just jiggling around back there and
- 36:06Speaker 4: he was waiting for somebody to give it to. And
- 36:09Speaker 4: last last fall he decided to give it to me.
- 36:13Speaker 4: And I usually tell students I'm not sure why. He
- 36:16Speaker 4: gave it to me in a hotel parking lot and
- 36:18Speaker 4: then drove off and kids are like, did you check
- 36:22Speaker 4: what was inside of it? I'm like, no, I mean
- 36:23Speaker 4: it was time, Like, yeah, right, you're not going to
- 36:26Speaker 4: give me anything, you know, terrible, But yeah, then you know,
- 36:29Speaker 4: I usually tell him how special it is to me,
- 36:31Speaker 4: and then I'll what I'll usually do is say, hey.
- 36:34Speaker 5: This I'm going to open this up.
- 36:35Speaker 4: But this next thing that I'm gonna can somebody catch,
- 36:39Speaker 4: you know, because this next thing I'm gonna toss is.
- 36:40Speaker 5: Even more important to me than this briefcase.
- 36:44Speaker 4: And I inevitably get somebody and I'm like, now, seriously,
- 36:48Speaker 4: like I need you to promise to not let this
- 36:51Speaker 4: hit the floor. They're like, oh, okay, I promise, And
- 36:55Speaker 4: sometimes they're like sitting there like this. I'm like, dude,
- 36:57Speaker 4: get ready, like come on and uh, you know, I'll
- 37:00Speaker 4: grab it all silent line, you know, keep it away
- 37:03Speaker 4: from the students, and then I'll chuck it at him
- 37:07Speaker 4: and wrapped up diaper.
- 37:11Speaker 5: And I started out with rice inside of it.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Well that was gonna be a question that I had,
- 37:18Speaker 2: did you did you move to something else?
- 37:21Speaker 4: I did, because I was playing a game with it
- 37:25Speaker 4: and it hit the floor and the rice blew out
- 37:30Speaker 4: everywhere in the classroom and it was like.
- 37:33Speaker 5: Carpet too, it wasn't like hard floor.
- 37:36Speaker 4: And this this fifth grader gets up and gets this tiny,
- 37:40Speaker 4: tiny vacuum.
- 37:41Speaker 5: For the next five minutes, you know, like the kids
- 37:43Speaker 5: wouldn't stop the game. I'm like, no, no, no, like we
- 37:45Speaker 5: got to stop him, Like no, it's my time.
- 37:46Speaker 4: To shoot them because I had two others going two
- 37:49Speaker 4: other diapers and I'm like, no, like, we got to stop.
- 37:52Speaker 4: And I look over to the teacher and I'm like, oh,
- 37:54Speaker 4: I'm so sorry. Luckily I had somewhat of a good
- 37:58Speaker 4: rapport with her. Yeah, he's like, it's it's okay. But
- 38:03Speaker 4: the student, you know, cleaned it up. And I promised
- 38:06Speaker 4: myself that I wouldn't put rice in it anymore. So
- 38:09Speaker 4: then I started doing some really funky things, like some
- 38:12Speaker 4: homemade soap from my wife.
- 38:16Speaker 5: She makes homemade soap.
- 38:17Speaker 4: And the day after that happened to me, I was
- 38:20Speaker 4: back home and I had to go to another school
- 38:22Speaker 4: and it was in the morning, and I'm like, what
- 38:24Speaker 4: am I going to put in my diaper? I need
- 38:26Speaker 4: a diaper because it's my thing. I pull it out
- 38:29Speaker 4: and make everybody laugh. They freak out, they toss it,
- 38:31Speaker 4: they scream, sometimes they cry.
- 38:34Speaker 5: I tell students and they're like.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Like, well, you know, every now and then you throw
- 38:40Speaker 4: it to a student who was traumatized by their dad
- 38:43Speaker 4: chasing around with a diaper, and you know it's it's
- 38:46Speaker 4: a little much for him, and and so, uh, you
- 38:49Speaker 4: got to be careful. But anyhow, so I was out there,
- 38:52Speaker 4: headed out the door, and I saw this roum, you know,
- 38:55Speaker 4: piece of soap that my wife makes. She makes really
- 38:59Speaker 4: really amazing soap, but this one round when I stuck
- 39:01Speaker 4: it in there.
- 39:02Speaker 3: With some plastic bag, what color was it, I was
- 39:05Speaker 3: like a beige. It was just like a brown. It
- 39:10Speaker 3: wasn't brown, not quite okay.
- 39:14Speaker 5: Now, yeah, yeah, yeah it should have been.
- 39:16Speaker 4: But she she didn't really have a ton of brown ones.
- 39:19Speaker 4: So but I threw it in there just just for
- 39:21Speaker 4: that day, and I ended up keeping it in there.
- 39:23Speaker 5: At one point.
- 39:24Speaker 4: I had a bottle of ibuprofen in there because I
- 39:27Speaker 4: don't know, I guess I'm a little lazy, and I
- 39:29Speaker 4: was like, I don't know what else to put in.
- 39:31Speaker 5: So one of them was shaking, but I.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Stopped with the soap because I had a ninth grader
- 39:39Speaker 4: rip open the diaper found it in circle as I'm
- 39:44Speaker 4: doing this little gig and and they're like, can I
- 39:48Speaker 4: eat this?
- 39:49Speaker 5: Can I take a bite of it?
- 39:51Speaker 4: And I'm like, sure, bite of this soap? And it
- 40:00Speaker 4: it's like it's like kind of waxy, and it's like
- 40:03Speaker 4: he gets up and he hands it.
- 40:04Speaker 5: To his buddy.
- 40:05Speaker 4: His buddy takes a bigger bite of it, and the
- 40:07Speaker 4: teacher's just sitting there like what doing.
- 40:12Speaker 5: I was like, I'm sorry, I mean they asked me.
- 40:14Speaker 4: I mean, it's not toxic, sure, but it were just
- 40:17Speaker 4: stuck in their tea. And so I tell students, I
- 40:21Speaker 4: can't carry soap anymore in there, so you know right now.
- 40:26Speaker 4: I kept this little squishy stress ball.
- 40:30Speaker 5: It's perfect, but it's it's broken here.
- 40:35Speaker 3: Yeah, so I used it.
- 40:36Speaker 5: They wanted to use it as a talking piece, but
- 40:38Speaker 5: it was just squeezing out stuff. I was like, you
- 40:40Speaker 5: know what, I'll just put that in my diaper. But
- 40:43Speaker 5: the reason I have a diaper.
- 40:44Speaker 4: JD is and I always tell this to the students
- 40:48Speaker 4: once they freak out.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Say the reason I have it.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Is because I have a one and a half almost
- 40:53Speaker 4: two year old son, and right now I travel about
- 40:56Speaker 4: five days a week. I only really get to see
- 40:59Speaker 4: him on the weekend. But if you ever had to
- 41:02Speaker 4: change a diaper, and usually a kid or two raises
- 41:04Speaker 4: their hand, you know, if you ever had to change
- 41:06Speaker 4: a diaper, you know that the first one smelly, nasty, disgusting.
- 41:10Speaker 5: You change it real quick.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Sometimes I'll tell them I close my eyes to hide
- 41:14Speaker 4: it from the you know, I don't want the stinct
- 41:15Speaker 4: to seep into my eyes. Change it real quick, throw
- 41:18Speaker 4: a new one on, and now all of a sudden,
- 41:19Speaker 4: you have this half a little naked human being waddling
- 41:23Speaker 4: across the floor, and you just get this quick little
- 41:25Speaker 4: whiff of sure pampers yes and uh.
- 41:31Speaker 5: And so.
- 41:33Speaker 4: I get to pull this out every single day with
- 41:35Speaker 4: the students that I meet, watch their reactions, and then
- 41:39Speaker 4: when I get it back, I get to give it
- 41:40Speaker 4: a quick whiff and by this time, kids are like,
- 41:42Speaker 4: oh no, like no, no, and it just brings back
- 41:45Speaker 4: all these awesome memories that I have with my son,
- 41:48Speaker 4: not the changing part, sure running around and.
- 41:53Speaker 5: And so that's why I have a diaper, That's why
- 41:54Speaker 5: I chuck at the students. But you know, by the.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Time I'm done with that, you know, I've got I've got,
- 42:01Speaker 4: you know, twenty minutes to maybe even fifteen minutes to
- 42:05Speaker 4: ask my question.
- 42:06Speaker 5: And usually it's.
- 42:06Speaker 4: A solid question, but by that time, I've just got
- 42:10Speaker 4: students laughing.
- 42:11Speaker 3: Yeah. Right, ice breaker, Joe, Joe. Have you.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Have you at any point considered you know, like a
- 42:25Speaker 2: a chocolate pudding or pea soup or anything.
- 42:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I get students that say I should put Hershey
- 42:33Speaker 4: Bars in there, and.
- 42:34Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great idea, I think for me.
- 42:39Speaker 4: The challenging part with that is I just stick this
- 42:43Speaker 4: back in my suitcase and I I don't know, I
- 42:50Speaker 4: mean putting, I don't notice putting end up smelling. Does
- 42:56Speaker 4: does chocolate? I mean like, I just just use it
- 43:00Speaker 4: over like I have to change it every now and
- 43:03Speaker 4: then because they just get so busted up. But these
- 43:05Speaker 4: pampers they hold up so well. I can because I
- 43:08Speaker 4: games with these too.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Yeahs, Pampers should be sending you a free supply frankly
- 43:17Speaker 2: every week.
- 43:19Speaker 3: I want to know.
- 43:20Speaker 2: I want to know where you have opened your briefcase
- 43:24Speaker 2: forgetting that this diaper is in there, or maybe not
- 43:29Speaker 2: at the airport we're on a bus. Where where was
- 43:32Speaker 2: it when you've opened this and had others glance at this?
- 43:39Speaker 4: Oh when students that I haven't done a circle with
- 43:45Speaker 4: ask me to look what's inside of it, and you know,
- 43:49Speaker 4: I'm like yeah, sure, And they're going through and they
- 43:52Speaker 4: see all my action figures and then they get to
- 43:54Speaker 4: the bottom of it and there's this diaper and they're like,
- 43:57Speaker 4: what is this.
- 43:59Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, yeah, yeah, And then I have to
- 44:01Speaker 5: tell them the whole story.
- 44:02Speaker 3: But you know, because but but you know, forgot about
- 44:06Speaker 3: that one.
- 44:07Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, but really only that that probably only app
- 44:11Speaker 4: in the first couple of weeks that I started doing it,
- 44:14Speaker 4: Like this is like, this is probably and I didn't
- 44:16Speaker 4: mean for it to be this. It was supposed to
- 44:19Speaker 4: be a little bit of a gag, supposed to be
- 44:21Speaker 4: able to play games with it. But after I explain
- 44:26Speaker 4: why I have it. This is probably one of my
- 44:29Speaker 4: most used talking pieces, students are like all discussed to
- 44:35Speaker 4: buy it. And then by the time I'm done explaining it,
- 44:39Speaker 4: because you know, I'm opening up and being a little
- 44:40Speaker 4: bit vulnerable. Sure, and and and then they're like, let's
- 44:45Speaker 4: use the diaper, and I'm like, okay, awesome, sweet pa.
- 44:50Speaker 4: And I just think it's incredible, especially like middle schoolers,
- 44:54Speaker 4: like in in school and they're just passing around a
- 45:00Speaker 4: diaper and I'll look and him be like everything, you'd
- 45:02Speaker 4: be passing a dipe around in school, Like It's just
- 45:06Speaker 4: it's kind of like one of those unique things that
- 45:09Speaker 4: I would almost imagine I'm like one of the only
- 45:13Speaker 4: people in the world who gets to like.
- 45:17Speaker 5: Pass a dipe around with a bunch of mills.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Yeah, right, I got to ask you man. You know, first,
- 45:23Speaker 2: I want to tell you when one of the first
- 45:25Speaker 2: times that I met Tom, you know, he was he
- 45:32Speaker 2: was just speeling out all of these acronyms, and I
- 45:37Speaker 2: was a little overwhelmed, and I was like, Tom, you know,
- 45:44Speaker 2: it's like, do I have to write all these down?
- 45:47Speaker 2: And he said no, no, no, and he put his
- 45:50Speaker 2: hand on my shoulder and he said, someday you'll get it.
- 45:55Speaker 2: About a week and a half ago, I was faced
- 46:01Speaker 2: with a challenging situation and all of a sudden, out
- 46:12Speaker 2: of nowhere, unexpectedly, I said, hold on, possibilities exist, and
- 46:22Speaker 2: I couldn't believe it. I was like, there's hope right there.
- 46:30Speaker 2: And I'm like, Tom.
- 46:34Speaker 3: Was right. Have you ever had.
- 46:39Speaker 2: A student in circle say, hey, that's a great idea
- 46:44Speaker 2: and that's a great acronym. But quite honestly, I don't
- 46:50Speaker 2: have any hope.
- 46:53Speaker 3: The outcome is probably not going to be good.
- 47:02Speaker 5: I don't know if I had a student say that.
- 47:07Speaker 4: Blatantly right out in in a circle. I've definitely had
- 47:13Speaker 4: some students say, well, I don't have any super I
- 47:16Speaker 4: don't have a hero. There's there's nobody that that helps me.
- 47:22Speaker 4: You know, when we ask who's your favorite superhero? I've
- 47:24Speaker 4: had that happen. You know a number of times I
- 47:27Speaker 4: have had, you know, an occasion or two, you know
- 47:34Speaker 4: where students come up to me afterwards and say, you know, hey,
- 47:39Speaker 4: thanks for sharing. You know, I I thought about committing
- 47:42Speaker 4: suicide the other day, and and you know, then we
- 47:47Speaker 4: we talked through that, we go to a counselor Yeah,
- 47:50Speaker 4: I don't know that I've had a direct confrontation in
- 47:55Speaker 4: that way in a circle where a student goes there
- 48:01Speaker 4: there really is no hope. But you know, seeing as
- 48:08Speaker 4: you brought it up, I'd be willing to imagine that
- 48:11Speaker 4: that it will come down the road at some point.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys are all doing such great work. I'm
- 48:23Speaker 2: so impressed by hearing about everything and witnessing it myself
- 48:30Speaker 2: over in Peru, and I hope to have another opportunity
- 48:33Speaker 2: to do that with any of you. Frankly, you guys
- 48:40Speaker 2: are really doing incredible stuff. And like I said earlier,
- 48:45Speaker 2: schools that are not yet familiar with Sweethearts and Heroes
- 48:53Speaker 2: get in touch with them. Sweethearts and Heroes dot Com
- 48:56Speaker 2: is really the best go to that you should you
- 49:01Speaker 2: should have at your fingertips today. If your child or
- 49:07Speaker 2: your your school is not connected, and if they are,
- 49:15Speaker 2: take your testimony and share it to other schools. How
- 49:21Speaker 2: important the work is that you're doing to empower children
- 49:30Speaker 2: to be the best that they can, to be productive,
- 49:34Speaker 2: to be intelligent, yes, to learn things, of course, but
- 49:37Speaker 2: to carry with them hope, strength, encouragement, love, empathy that
- 49:47Speaker 2: they can give to others. And you guys are just
- 49:52Speaker 2: you're doing it, You're really doing it. And I'm so
- 49:55Speaker 2: impressed with all of you.
- 49:58Speaker 5: Well, we appreciate that, JD and really appreciate you and
- 50:01Speaker 5: and allowing us to come on here.
- 50:05Speaker 4: And you know, maybe next time there was one comment
- 50:07Speaker 4: I wanted you made a quick statement about you know,
- 50:11Speaker 4: maybe it's the sign of the times, and and uh,
- 50:13Speaker 4: i'd be I'd be interested to hear about, you know,
- 50:18Speaker 4: maybe more if there's any depth on you know, that
- 50:20Speaker 4: comment on your end.
- 50:22Speaker 5: I'd love to talk to you about that.
- 50:25Speaker 2: I would love to have that conversation. Man, When when
- 50:28Speaker 2: do you I mean, I'd love to get you and
- 50:33Speaker 2: Brian in here or you and and Pat? Yeah, when
- 50:38Speaker 2: are you gonna be out this way?
- 50:42Speaker 5: So I don't I'm not really sure.
- 50:45Speaker 4: Our schedule right now, you know, is being built for
- 50:48Speaker 4: this next year, but you know I would.
- 50:52Speaker 5: I would be more.
- 50:53Speaker 4: Than you know, I know, Brian isn't that far away.
- 50:56Speaker 4: I'm not even sure how far. I would technically be
- 50:59Speaker 4: probably three three, four hours, three hours maybe, but you
- 51:04Speaker 4: know I would love that, you know, whether it's with
- 51:07Speaker 4: Brian or Pat.
- 51:08Speaker 5: I would. I.
- 51:08Speaker 4: I really kind of was thinking about it before I
- 51:11Speaker 4: hopped on. I was like, man, I'm not really a
- 51:14Speaker 4: Google meet guy. Yeah, like, I'm not really a phone guy.
- 51:19Speaker 4: I like to be in person.
- 51:20Speaker 6: And I was thinking, oh, I'd be so sweet to sure, So.
- 51:24Speaker 4: I really think, yeah, let's you know, I'd be willing
- 51:27Speaker 4: to make the drive, but let's let's do it in
- 51:30Speaker 4: person next time.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Man, I would love to do a marathon circle live
- 51:42Speaker 2: unaired out with you and Tom and Rick and the
- 51:47Speaker 2: whole team. Wow, just us, no time restraints, live on

- 52:36Speaker 4: this morning.

- 52:42Speaker 2: you what a great guy. That's the kind of stuff
- 52:45Speaker 2: right there that.
- 52:48Speaker 3: That I love so much.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Having conversations like that incredible. Every Wednesday we bring Sweethearts
- 53:00Speaker 2: Heroes on with us and we have great conversations and
