- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's talk about today's episode.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Today I'm going to be talking about how to find time to actually create your online course so that you can get it out in the world.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Because, and let's face it, we are all pressed for time, and this is one area that can be quite challenging.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Trying to find the hours in a day to get stuff done outside of running your business, raising a family, or just general day-to-day living can be really tough.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Now, time is one of those biggest roadblocks that stands between us and us actually reaching our goals.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: It's a never-ending cycle of everything that needs to be done, which can really stop us moving forward, and that sense of overwhelm can often lead us to just procrastinate and not actually get stuff done.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Trying to spin so many plates all at once can lead to us feeling tired, exhausted, and of course burnt out.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Now I spoke about this in my last episode, episode 33, how to overcome overwhelm in business.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: So if you haven't listened to that episode yet, then go and check it out because I talk about how overwhelm can stop us in our tracks and prevent us from making progress within our business and what we can do to combat that.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: I share three really easy and simple strategies to overcome in the overwhelm so that you can be more productive and effective in your business.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Now, the thing about overwhelm is that it's a result of our own behaviour.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: We do it to ourselves because overwhelm often stems from either trying to do too much stuff all of the time or trying to be everything to everyone or from not saying no when we know we should.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: It's the doing mode that is what often leads to the overwhelm.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Now being able to step back and look at your business from a wider stance gives you a more rounded perspective of your business, and when we have this perspective, it's easier to manage all of those things that need to get done because you can look in on them from the outside as opposed to being sort of caught up in the weeds of everything that needs to get done.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: It's that age-old saying of, I can't see the wood from the trees.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Well, you can't if you're stuck in the doing of your business.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: We need to take a step back and look at this thing that we're creating and where we're taking it and how it aligns with our vision.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Now, this then means you can make conscious decisions about your priorities as opposed to just constantly being that in that reactive mode of just doing tasks and being led by those tasks, but maybe choosing the wrong tasks that's not moving you forward.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: It's when we are in this reactive mode that we're most likely going to suffer the overwhelm, and when we're feeling overwhelmed, of course, the last thing that we want to do is take on any more projects, especially projects like creating an online course, because it can feel really overwhelming, and of course, you're going to be asking yourself, how the earth am I going to find the time to do it?
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: I'm already busy, I don't have time to create an online course.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: However, the reality is that when you're busy doing stuff in your business, you're not necessarily moving your business forward.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Yes, of course, you're doing stuff that is going to contribute to your business, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's been effective in terms of driving revenue or new sales.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Now, a classic example of this is Instagram.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: I've spoken to so many people that just get so overwhelmed with Instagram, they feel like they need to be creating videos and reels and all of that good stuff in order to communicate with their audience.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: But the problem with getting caught up with videos and Instagrams or um reels on Instagram is the fact that you're only looking at it from one angle, you're only looking at it from I need to be there because everybody else is, and Instagram tells me that videos are gonna be are going to help me be more successful with my marketing.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: But the problem is that it takes ages to create a really good effective reel.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And if you're spending your time creating reels and videos trying to build your audience on Instagram, you could be looking at you could be missing out on other ways that are going to be easier for you to grow your business because you're caught up in the weeds of having to learn Instagram, trying to learn how to create these reels, that you're actually spending a great deal of time in an area that might not actually be the best place for you.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not saying don't spend your time creating reels or anything like that.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, it really comes down to your goals, your marketing strategy, and where you need to show up.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: The point that I'm trying to make is that you need to do a lot of reels on a regular basis to generate movement with Instagram, and that of course requires time.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: But if you're somebody that is time poor, you may not necessarily feel as though you have that time to give, and so because you're choosing to be in somewhere that is requiring a lot of your time, it's worth asking the question: is this the best use of my time and is it really going to move my business forward?
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: It may be, it may not, but it's worth being aware of this because if you are one of those people that is saying, I don't have a lot of time, but yet you're spending a lot of time creating reels, it's worth just evaluating whether that's the best use of your time.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Now, social media is one of those rabbit holes that so many entrepreneurs find themselves caught up in because we're constantly being told that we need to be on social media to grow our audiences, to generate more leads, and to find new clients.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: And of course, to some extent, there is truth to that.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: But social media is also a time suck, it drains our time.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: How many hours have you lost simply by sitting at your desk scrolling through people's content, watching other people's reels, or creating your own content only to receive nada, to receive nothing, crickets, and yet you've spent so much time putting this amazing content together that to get that engagement, it becomes really tough.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Could you that time have been spent somewhere else, somewhere where you're going to see more of a return?
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: So, my point is that sometimes when we're in the doing mode of our business, we can place a huge amount of importance in areas of our business that are not actually as important as what we think, and then we can lose sight of what is important, like developing our business by creating new offers to attract new and existing customers, which in turn then grows your revenue.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Now, when it comes to creating new offers in our business, it can be really scary because if we're creating something new for the very first time, it can be really difficult to know how it's going to be received, and especially if you feel as though you don't have a lot of time, you it can lead to those feelings of overwhelm because trying to bring something new into the business when you feel like you don't have the time to really focus on it, which is why I wanted to really dive into this in this episode because there are ways to bring time back so you can actually focus your energy on where it does matter.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, so first let's talk about online courses.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: What are they and why should you create one?
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: So, for those of you who don't know, an online course is a really effective way for students to learn a new skill or gain new knowledge.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: It's delivered as an online study program that students work through at their own pace and from the comfort of their own home.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Now, online courses remove the barriers to learning because all the students need really is a device like a mobile or a desktop computer and an internet connection, and then they can learn whatever skills they want to learn just by simply logging on.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Now, the great thing about this from an entrepreneur's perspective is that it opens up this incredible opportunity because what is the one thing that all entrepreneurs have in common?
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: And of course, it's knowledge and expertise, which is exactly what is needed to create an online course.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Now, creating a digital course for your business is a great way to leverage what you know, it's a great way to take your knowledge and your skills and make money from it.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: People need what you have to offer, and online courses provide that opportunity for you to support and help more people and, of course, generate more money in the process.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: It also means that you do not need to be there in person to deliver the content so you get your time back.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Creating an online course is based on the build-it once and sell it on repeat model so that you can create that passive revenue in your business.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Now, for me, this is why I love talking about online courses because you can be really strategic with them.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: There are so many ways to leverage your online course to increase your revenue.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: However, that's another episode which I'm gonna that's going to be coming up in the future, so stay tuned because I want to talk about the strategic approach to making money through online courses.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: However, today I want to share with you five tips on how you can go about creating more time in your business so you can actually get your online course created and out in the world.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, so my first tip that I want to share with you is about getting your mind in the right place.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: I would say this is the probably the most important tip that I can possibly share with you because it's all about mindset, and we know that where our mind goes, we go.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Now, how many times have you stopped yourself from doing something because you said to yourself that you just don't have the time for it?
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: I'm sure it's a lot.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: I know it's definitely something that I find myself saying, but here's the truth: we do have time, we all have time because we all have the same 24 hours available to us.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: The problem is not that you don't have time, the problem is most likely that the time that you have is being spent elsewhere, which means it's not really a time issue, but maybe how your time is being managed.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: This, of course, can be addressed and fixed, but first, I think it's important to establish why something needs doing in the first place, why you want to create an online course, why it's important to you, and what it's going to do for you and your business.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Do you really truly want to create an online course, or is it just something that would be nice to have?
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: I think once you identify what camp it sits in, then you can make a decision whether it's actually something that it's worth committing to.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Now, if you identify it as a must-have, you must do this because you want to grow your business, you want to scale, you want to spend less time at your desk working for clients, then you need to connect to it on a deeper level.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: So it needs to be connected to that greater outcome.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Once you have that and you connect to it on a deeper level, it becomes easier because it then becomes a non-negotiable.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: You know, an online course is going to transform your business and make a difference to your life, therefore, it's a goal that needs to be committed to.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Once you know you're going to commit to it, it's going to be easier to get it done.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: When we identify something as being important, we find the time to focus on it.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: I think by establishing its importance in your business and in the future success of your business, then it's going to be easier for you to make sure it happens.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, so my second tip is about focusing in on one thing at a time.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: So, how many projects do you currently have on the go?
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: And are you effectively moving these projects forward, or are you finding that you're struggling because you have so many things that you're trying to get done?
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: Because when we have so many things on our plates, it becomes really difficult to actually move one thing forward because our attention is being split in all different directions.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: Now, what I recommend you do is write a list of the projects that you're currently juggling, and then next to each one, number them one to five.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: One being really important, and five being not so much.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: So I want you to number their priority because by doing this, you'll be able to establish what it is you have on your plate and how important it is to your business.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: If you find that you're focusing your attention on projects that are not actually that important, then it's worth thinking about putting those projects on hold so that you can focus in on where it matters.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: So, for example, if you've identified in your goals that creating a passive revenue stream in your business is important, but you're currently working on tasks or projects that are not working towards that goal, then maybe you're focusing in on the wrong tasks, and maybe right now what you need to be doing is looking at ways to bring passive revenue in and then start work on those kinds of projects.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: I think trying to achieve too many things in one go becomes counterintuitive because all you'll do is lose energy through trying to achieve so much without actually achieving any real results.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: If your priority for this year is to create an online course, then make it your priority by reducing your other commitments.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: It's much easier to pick one big goal, like creating an online course, and then focus solely on that.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Get that done, get that out in the world, you can then start making money, and then you can focus in on other things that then need to be focused on.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: So, my third tip is about blocking out time in your calendar.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Now, this really helped me when I created my very first online course.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: I made sure that every week I schedule time in my Google Calendar to work on my course.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Now, initially, I blocked in one hour a week and it was a non-negotiable.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: This was time that I was going to dedicate to working on my online course.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Now I chose to do this on a Friday morning because I knew that it was going to be a quieter day for me and it would give me something to look forward to at the end of the week.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: It also meant that if I got into my flow, then I could use the time at the weekend to continue working on it.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: So I knew that, for example, if I was working on a lesson and I needed to work on the resource, for example, and I and I didn't want to stop that process, then I could schedule in time in the weekend to get it completed, which really helped me to get things done.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: I think having structure helped me to feel in control.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: I need structure, I'm somebody that I like to know what I'm doing when I'm doing it, so that I know that it's going to be taken care of.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Now, working this way helped me to complete my course, but it also helped me to build up momentum so that I was constantly in that flow, that creative flow, where I was working towards it completing something.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: So before I knew it, I'd completed my course and I was selling it.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: And when I look back at that time, it wasn't always easy.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: There were always things coming in that were which I felt at times were trying.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: To derail me, but I made sure that having that time in my diary each week, I moved my course forward, I got stuff done.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Now, had that not happened, had I not been structured with my approach, then I wouldn't have completed my online course.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: And I think when we're developing new ideas, we need to give ourselves time and space to work on them.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: We need to put that time aside.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter whether it's an online course, a new workshop, or a program.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: For something to work, time needs to be spent in creating it.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: And blocking out time in your calendar will help you to get stuff done and achieve your goals.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: And once you block out their time, you can treat it like a non-negotiable.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: It's in the calendar, it's exactly like a client meeting.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: You it's going to happen no matter what.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: If it's in your calendar, it's going to get done.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: And I think by taking this approach, then you'll show up and you'll actually do the work and get it done.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, so what I recommend for you to do is at the start of each month, schedule in 30 minutes a week into your calendar.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: Get it booked into your calendar and treat it like a non-negotiable.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: When it's in there, it's going to happen, and that's when you're going to work on your course.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: If you can block out the same time each week, then it's going to be better for you because you'll know that, for example, on a Friday morning, you're going to be spending 30 minutes or 60 minutes working on your course.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: So you know that you don't have to think about it because it's in your calendar.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: And if you can book out the same day and time each week, it will help you to build momentum.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: By doing that, you can then forget about it because it's in your calendar, it's going to happen, which means you're going to get your course done.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: By blocking out time in your calendar each week, it will make a huge difference to you getting your course completed.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: My fourth tip is about keeping it simple.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: If the mere thought of creating an online course overwhelms you, then just break it down into small chunks.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Now we've already identified that overwhelm stops progress.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: So we need to manage that overwhelm.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: And the way we can do this is just keeping things simple.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Stop overthinking all of the things that need to be done in your online course and just focus on the things that need to be done here and now.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: So what I mean by that is if you are working on your first module, for example, and you are having lots of lessons in your module, just focus in on one lesson at a time and then break down the tasks that you need to focus on in that lesson.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Don't think about everything that needs to get done in your course because it will just lead you to overwhelm.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: By breaking down a big project into small bite-sized chunks, you can then focus your energy on just completing one task at a time.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Not only will you feel like you're moving forward, you'll also carry that feeling of feeling accomplished because you're getting things done and moving yourself towards your goal.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: This will then build your confidence and, of course, then keep you motivated.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Because it's really important to maintain enthusiasm when you're creating your online course.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Because what you don't want to do is burn yourself out and then lose interest.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Success starts by just taking one step at a time in the right direction.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: As long as you keep putting one step in front of another, you're going to achieve your goal.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: So break down your tasks, keep it really simple, and just focus on the things that need to be done right now.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Okay, so my fifth and final tip is to plan your day ahead of time.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Now, this is a really useful habit to adopt if you're looking to maximize your time through the day and be more productive because this requires you to plan your day out in advance.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: Now, what I recommend you do is spend the first 30 minutes of each day planning your day so that you can get really clear on what your priorities are for that day and then what needs to get done.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: This is going to give you control over your day, which will then help you to move towards your goal.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: Now it's all too easy to waste time doing things that actually don't matter, to get caught up in those tasks that are nice to do, but actually they're not really tasks that are going to move the needle and make a difference.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: So planning your day out in advance is going to help set you up for success because you can be conscious about the tasks that you actually spend your time on.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: So at the start of each day, I want you to establish three main goals that you want to achieve during that day.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: They don't need to be massive goals, they just go, they can be really small goals, it really doesn't matter.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: But these goals will feed into your greater goal and help you to move forward.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: So, for example, using the passive revenue example, if you know that your one of your big goals is to create passive revenue in your business, then you may choose to use one of your smaller goals during the day to just spend a little bit of time researching ideas, so you're actually building that in to your day.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Another example could be that you are in the middle of creating your online course, and your goal is to record video for module one, and you have five lessons in that module that require video, so then you'd be writing down on your in your day that one of your goals could just be to write the script for that video.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: What you're doing here is you're really breaking it down into bite-sized chunks, but you're planning it out in advance and then blocking time in your diary to do this.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: So you might decide you're going to schedule in 2 to 2:30 to start work on writing your script for that video.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Now, 30 minutes may not sound a lot, but if you were to do this every day, you're going to be spending two and a half hours a week on tasks that are really going to support your business.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, I've used an online course as an example, but to be honest, this works for anything.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: It's what I try and do every day, and since I've adopted this, it's really made a difference.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: I also use a business planner called Daily Great Nurse Business Planner, which I really use enjoying because I have it there in front of me and I can plan my day out.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: It's a really useful tool because it keeps me organized and in control of my day.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: It gives me a system and a structure to work to, which I find really useful.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: And what I really like about it is that it has a space in the planner each day to write down my key focuses.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: By using this system, not only do I stay focused and in control, but if I plan my day out properly, then I can always find 30 minutes to work on my business.
