- 1:07Speaker 1: Brandon Vick Brandon, how you doing today, my man?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Pretty pretty, pretty good. I am amazed. Chris Stapleton did
- 1:14Speaker 2: our entrance. That is well done.
- 1:19Speaker 1: It's a new it's a new theme song for movie
- 1:21Speaker 1: Review Rewind. A little inside baseball here. Some of you
- 1:26Speaker 1: guys like if you've been listening to this show long enough,
- 1:28Speaker 1: you know we record these way in advance. The schedule
- 1:32Speaker 1: kind of got a little tricky this year, so this
- 1:35Speaker 1: episode's actually gonna come out in June, and we only
- 1:38Speaker 1: we recorded it two months ahead of time. But I
- 1:44Speaker 1: did get a new MacBook in between there, and all
- 1:47Speaker 1: of the all of the theme songs for our podcast
- 1:50Speaker 1: were lost on the old one. The problem is we've
- 1:54Speaker 1: already recorded episodes for like July and September and August
- 1:59Speaker 1: and October, even January and February of next year that
- 2:04Speaker 1: are all going to have the old theme song, but
- 2:07Speaker 1: this new one just for June, and then for August.
- 2:12Speaker 1: One of the August episodes will have that.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I didn't think about that. They're literally going to hear it.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Could from month to month for the rest of the year.
- 2:22Speaker 1: It's going to be like going back and forth between
- 2:24Speaker 1: the old song and the new one. So nice. That's yeah,
- 2:28Speaker 1: just a little peak behind me.
- 2:29Speaker 2: And now my next question is going to be are
- 2:31Speaker 2: you forty yet? But now people know it's been too
- 2:33Speaker 2: much in advance, so clearly you're still you're still in
- 2:35Speaker 2: your thirties.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Well, this is this is going to be released in
- 2:39Speaker 1: my birthday month when I will turn forty.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, your birthday month, yeah yeah yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I still I still don't know if I'm gonna do
- 2:45Speaker 1: anything for forty I mean, because my wife is like,
- 2:48Speaker 1: you need to do something big, and I'm just like,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I guess it depends on what it is, because I'm
- 2:58Speaker 2: kind of like that I would like to do like something,
- 3:02Speaker 2: but then I'm like, I don't want to have to
- 3:05Speaker 2: like drive somewhere and pay for parking, and I don't
- 3:08Speaker 2: want to like fight crowds, and you know, I don't
- 3:12Speaker 2: have I mean, we don't have that many friends now.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So, dude, I was thinking about it that the other day,
- 3:17Speaker 1: like so, and this is going to be news to you,
- 3:20Speaker 1: but I was thinking the other day my mother has
- 3:23Speaker 1: a big chest that she wants to move from the
- 3:27Speaker 1: garage into her bedroom and it's it's not heavy, but
- 3:31Speaker 1: it's too big for one person to carry. And I'm
- 3:35Speaker 1: not going to ask my seventy six seventy seven year
- 3:38Speaker 1: old mother to try and lift this. And so I
- 3:42Speaker 1: was thinking, like, Okay, well who do I call to
- 3:45Speaker 1: come help me move this? And in my head I
- 3:47Speaker 1: was like if Brandon can't do it. I genuinely who
- 3:53Speaker 1: you know?
- 3:53Speaker 2: Who you know? Who you would call?
- 3:54Speaker 1: Who? My dad? Yep?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Who is son years younger than your mother?
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yeah, so he.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Would do it, and in all fairness, he lives close.
- 4:06Speaker 1: He does, he does. I would not be it is
- 4:10Speaker 1: I almost said an older person. I don't want to
- 4:13Speaker 1: ask another older.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Person another Yeah. Yeah, yeah, but he's more handy than
- 4:19Speaker 2: you think.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Oh, I believe it. I believe it. But I would
- 4:22Speaker 1: feel guilty.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Well that's because I've got I've got an uncle that's
- 4:26Speaker 1: very handy too, and he's very eager to help as well.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And I'm like, I don't want to ask him to
- 4:30Speaker 1: come out here and move this. So but that just
- 4:33Speaker 1: goes to.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Show you I think I can move it, just to
- 4:35Speaker 2: so you know, I think I can move it.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But back in the day, it was like, I mean,
- 4:41Speaker 1: I remember when we moved out of our apartment, we
- 4:43Speaker 1: had like seven people there helping us move. And now
- 4:47Speaker 1: I don't even know. I don't even know that I could.
- 4:50Speaker 2: But also like and and and my wife and I
- 4:54Speaker 2: have talked about this about like whenever we moved from
- 4:56Speaker 2: our house to the other one, Like I don't want
- 4:59Speaker 2: to move all that shit. No, and him. Most of
- 5:02Speaker 2: the people that I know are my age. Anyone should
- 5:08Speaker 2: be doing it.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Do you remember when you me and Stephen mccash tried
- 5:11Speaker 1: to move our grille up the front yard around the
- 5:14Speaker 1: house to the back porch and we gave up halfway here.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah, a bone popped out of my arm.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And then I think, like our our other friend Ryan,
- 5:22Speaker 1: he's got a bad back. Yeah, I don't want to
- 5:24Speaker 1: ask him to help move.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, but by the way, younger than us.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Younger than us. But I'm just like going through the.
- 5:31Speaker 2: People that I slim pickings.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And I'm just like, man, we have gotten to the
- 5:35Speaker 1: age where just you know what, shell out the money
- 5:39Speaker 1: for the movers.
- 5:39Speaker 2: We should make our buddy Brett's kids help. Hey, you
- 5:43Speaker 2: think they're strong.
- 5:45Speaker 1: What's the point of having kids exactly help you move?
- 5:48Speaker 2: Exactly? My three year old cuts the grass and why
- 5:52Speaker 2: I hate yard work. But I think about that, like
- 5:55Speaker 2: as I get order him, like, I hope my kid
- 5:58Speaker 2: like kind of like some stuff for me, And then yeah,
- 6:02Speaker 2: you get his friends, assuming he'll have I'm hoping you
- 6:06Speaker 2: have some. Then I'm like I told, I told my wife,
- 6:11Speaker 2: I'm like, we're in we'll be in good shape.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I mean, how many times did my father, when we
- 6:16Speaker 1: were teenagers, have us doing stuff around the house or
- 6:20Speaker 1: at the shop.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Well, yeah, but you know what, your dad never really asked.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I don't think he really asked me to do that much.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I think you worked for him one day.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I did work for him one day, and Sanding, I
- 6:32Speaker 2: think he.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I think he thought for the rest of his days.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I think he thought that he traumatized you.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I just don't. I think I realized it's
- 6:42Speaker 2: that it's too much hard work.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I think I think he thought I'm going to get
- 6:48Speaker 1: a phone call from Mike and Debbie.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Yeah, Now, you know what's funny. I don't. It wasn't
- 6:53Speaker 2: a bad experience, but I do. I remember Sanding a lot.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Sand sucks man.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I don't know if it was. It was probably a
- 7:00Speaker 2: car or part of a car.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Yeah, we were working on a car. Then.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I think I don't even know why I did it.
- 7:07Speaker 1: We did it to get money for Kentucky Kingdom.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Oh was it for kid?
- 7:11Speaker 1: Oh?
- 7:11Speaker 2: Okay, all right, I did not.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Okay, We're going up there with another another buddy's friend. Yeah. Yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 1: and we had to we had to come up with
- 7:18Speaker 1: some money and my dad said, I'll pay you guys
- 7:21Speaker 1: such and such an hour.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I do remember going and I think I had met
- 7:26Speaker 2: one of the colorful characters that came around.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Oh man.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I honestly I couldn't. I couldn't tell you who, but
- 7:33Speaker 2: I there was definitely one dude. But but yeah, I
- 7:38Speaker 2: didn't know that's what it was for. But I do
- 7:41Speaker 2: remember standing yeah, and then I honestly I felt like
- 7:44Speaker 2: it was one of those like I feel like I
- 7:46Speaker 2: I went home and like your dad had to stay
- 7:48Speaker 2: and like basically do what he had asked me to do.
- 7:51Speaker 1: No I did, Oh, yeah, okay, well there you go.
- 7:55Speaker 2: But I thought we all went home together. Guess not.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Hey, I got I got too moour hours pay out
- 8:01Speaker 1: of that.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It's true because I remember thinking, I don't think Keeley's
- 8:04Speaker 2: gonna be like, hey kid, I don't think you did
- 8:07Speaker 2: that good of a job. And I'm like, I probably
- 8:09Speaker 2: won't go back. No, he may not ask me, But
- 8:12Speaker 2: I love that. On the flip side, is he thought
- 8:14Speaker 2: he was gonna get a call from my parents saying
- 8:17Speaker 2: my son he can't my son.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Has he exhausted? I think because he I remember I
- 8:24Speaker 1: remember him telling me like, I shouldn't have. I shouldn't
- 8:29Speaker 1: have if this was his first day doing this, I
- 8:31Speaker 1: shouldn't have put him in the in the paint booth
- 8:34Speaker 1: because we were in that paint booth.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah it was.
- 8:36Speaker 1: It was a metal building inside a metal building in
- 8:39Speaker 1: June in Tennessee.
- 8:41Speaker 2: So yeah, I do remember it being in the summer
- 8:43Speaker 2: because that's and I remember being Kentucky Kingdom was hot.
- 8:47Speaker 1: He had that couch in the office up front for guests,
- 8:51Speaker 1: and I remember we took a break there and he
- 8:55Speaker 1: came out and saw you, and I think that's when
- 8:58Speaker 1: he was like, don't He's like, I think you're done
- 9:01Speaker 1: for the day. And so I can remember. I can
- 9:05Speaker 1: remember it. I can remember it distinctly like you were.
- 9:08Speaker 1: You were like pale in the face, like it there
- 9:11Speaker 1: was there was.
- 9:12Speaker 2: It was probably a lot.
- 9:13Speaker 1: I remember thinking like, I'm gonna have to fight my
- 9:16Speaker 1: dad so that he doesn't make Brandon work anymore.
- 9:19Speaker 2: But then I'm thinking what was I doing?
- 9:23Speaker 1: We were no?
- 9:24Speaker 2: No, I mean like like I like, I worked at
- 9:28Speaker 2: a kmart going out of business when I was fifteen,
- 9:30Speaker 2: and then worked at Media plays.
- 9:31Speaker 1: So it must have been this was the summer before that.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Oh okay, this was like literally maybe maybe like a
- 9:37Speaker 1: month before.
- 9:38Speaker 2: CA Okay, okay, because I'm like, I'm kind of surprised,
- 9:42Speaker 2: but I do remember doing it. But then I'm like,
- 9:44Speaker 2: was I not working because I would have been like
- 9:46Speaker 2: I would have been fourteen. Yeah, but okay, all right,
- 9:49Speaker 2: do you.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Know what it was? The summer of two thousand and two.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I know we're talking about a movie tonight, but you
- 9:56Speaker 2: know what's kind of crazy to me? And this isn't
- 9:59Speaker 2: like because I'm I'm turning forty as well in September.
- 10:03Speaker 2: There's a lot that I don't quite remember anymore.
- 10:07Speaker 1: That's why I've started journaling, like try to every time
- 10:10Speaker 1: I think about something like this, I'll jot it down,
- 10:12Speaker 1: even if it's just a sentence or two. Like remember
- 10:15Speaker 1: when you and Brandon worked at the shop for a
- 10:17Speaker 1: day to get money.
- 10:18Speaker 2: For What's crazy is I remember the standing part and
- 10:21Speaker 2: going there, but I could not tell you why, and
- 10:24Speaker 2: obviously I couldn't tell you when. But there's times where
- 10:27Speaker 2: like and I mean, you know this, but I have.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I've told countless people about stuff like yeah, you know,
- 10:33Speaker 2: I went and saw this, and they're like, yeah, I
- 10:35Speaker 2: saw it. With you, and I'm like, oh, now, I
- 10:37Speaker 2: could chalk that up to where I see a lot
- 10:39Speaker 2: of movies and I don't quite remember if who was there,
- 10:42Speaker 2: especially towards the end when you know it was kind
- 10:45Speaker 2: of hit or miss on who went anyway? And then
- 10:47Speaker 2: it's just went by myself.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 2: But then there's times where like you have been like
- 10:51Speaker 2: you have quoted something to me and Brett has told
- 10:54Speaker 2: me a full fledged story and I don't remember. I
- 10:57Speaker 2: don't remember saying it, I don't remembering up with it,
- 11:01Speaker 2: and it sounds like I was funny, but I I'm like,
- 11:08Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:09Speaker 1: But then, but you got to start writing these listen.
- 11:11Speaker 2: But it's like for you because you remember, like I
- 11:14Speaker 2: don't know, you have a great memory, and I do
- 11:16Speaker 2: and I do too, but only about certain shit. There
- 11:20Speaker 2: are certain things I remember when you and I were
- 11:22Speaker 2: in elementary school. But I but you tell me something
- 11:25Speaker 2: I said on the podcast a year ago, and I'd
- 11:27Speaker 2: be like, I guess it's for me.
- 11:29Speaker 1: It's like recollection of everything from like I don't know,
- 11:34Speaker 1: early two, like maybe two thousand and eleven or twelve before.
- 11:39Speaker 2: That, I can were out of college and everything what.
- 11:41Speaker 1: We were doing in August of two thousand and eight
- 11:43Speaker 1: kind of deal. But the last ten years have been
- 11:46Speaker 1: a blur. I just dug up a bunch of stuff
- 11:49Speaker 1: from when I worked at Service Source, and they're like
- 11:52Speaker 1: I had good by notes in there from people that
- 11:54Speaker 1: I don't even remember, and I got cards that I
- 11:56Speaker 1: had to kind of I kind of had to stop
- 11:58Speaker 1: and think for a little bit, like Okay, who is
- 12:01Speaker 1: this pert? Oh yeah that and it's scary.
- 12:05Speaker 2: One thing I haven't lost is that, like I'm not
- 12:09Speaker 2: on Facebook anymore, but when I would get when I
- 12:11Speaker 2: would see old pictures or you would find old picture something,
- 12:15Speaker 2: I can remember those times, like I can remember the
- 12:20Speaker 2: that summer or based off the highlights of my hair
- 12:25Speaker 2: where I was. But but yeah, I mean you you
- 12:30Speaker 2: guys have quoted stuff and I laughed and I'm like,
- 12:33Speaker 2: who said that? And You're like you did. I'm like,
- 12:34Speaker 2: I have no idea on some of it. But I remember,
- 12:40Speaker 2: like getting pissed at people when I was in high school.
- 12:43Speaker 2: I remember some funny stuff from people that we that
- 12:47Speaker 2: we used to hang out with, like I I can
- 12:50Speaker 2: I can get that and Eve when we talk about
- 12:51Speaker 2: working with your dad, but I had that's crazy that
- 12:56Speaker 2: it was before that time, but I probably, I mean,
- 12:59Speaker 2: I must have been fit, I guess.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And I remember going to Kentucky Kingdom because we did
- 13:04Speaker 2: the water part too. And you know what I remember
- 13:08Speaker 2: because there was about six of us.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Right, No, that was no, you're thinking of it, you're
- 13:13Speaker 1: thinking of King's Island.
- 13:14Speaker 2: There were four of us.
- 13:15Speaker 1: No, there were five of us total. It was me, you,
- 13:20Speaker 1: our buddy Mark, our buddy Mark's dad that drove us.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Oh oh yeah, No, that's not the one I remember.
- 13:26Speaker 1: You You don't remember Mark's dad telling us as teenage
- 13:32Speaker 1: boys getting the green light for this felt like we
- 13:35Speaker 1: were we had become men. But he convinced us when
- 13:39Speaker 1: we drove past a woman driving he said, y'all ought
- 13:42Speaker 1: to get her of trying.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, I remember that. And I want to say
- 13:47Speaker 2: I remember Mark's and father. I do, Anthony, I do remember,
- 13:51Speaker 2: and he was he was a cool guy, just like
- 13:54Speaker 2: I remember a buddy of ours father who was going
- 13:56Speaker 2: to take us to a movie, and he didn't want
- 13:59Speaker 2: us to go see that movie, so we just didn't go.
- 14:03Speaker 1: I heard last week.
- 14:04Speaker 2: It's been a long time, but yeah, I remember it
- 14:07Speaker 2: being kind of awkward that we just were at his
- 14:10Speaker 2: house and didn't find to take us. But I'm thinking
- 14:15Speaker 2: of King's Island. Did they have a water thing? I
- 14:19Speaker 2: just remember us guys, And I know this sounds silly now,
- 14:23Speaker 2: and I mean we also were laughing about it then,
- 14:26Speaker 2: but like we all had to ask for help to
- 14:28Speaker 2: get sunscreen on our backs. And I remember I think
- 14:33Speaker 2: it was Zach who I like, I and I and
- 14:37Speaker 2: of course I made it weird too, but I was
- 14:41Speaker 2: thinking that was Kentucky Kingdom. But you know what, back then,
- 14:43Speaker 2: Kentucky Kingdom was a legit theme park. Though yeah, I
- 14:45Speaker 2: don't think they had a water theme. Anyway, we.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Do have a movie to Sorry, sorry, well just well,
- 14:53Speaker 1: you know what, We'll put a warning up there, like, hey,
- 14:55Speaker 1: we got carried away.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Well, I'm just amazed. Fifteen minutes into the podcast.
- 15:00Speaker 2: You talk about age, and I don't give a shit
- 15:02Speaker 2: about age, But then I think about the things that
- 15:04Speaker 2: I remember, and then the things that people tell me,
- 15:06Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, okay, Like I think I would
- 15:10Speaker 2: be kind of surprised by some stuff that other people remember,
- 15:14Speaker 2: and Brett's a good example.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I think of that sometimes too, like how do people
- 15:19Speaker 1: in my past remember me?
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 15:22Speaker 1: Because there's there's always like that story about oh the
- 15:26Speaker 1: little girl that shipped in the middle of the gym
- 15:28Speaker 1: floor in Gladeville Elementary.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Yes, and I still remember you hitting that one girl
- 15:33Speaker 2: with your sock. Like I'm telling you, there's things that
- 15:36Speaker 2: I could like this yesterday.
- 15:38Speaker 1: What do they remember about me?
- 15:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, if they.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Remember me at all, you know, it's kind of kind
- 15:43Speaker 1: of weird.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I do think there's a time where I'm sure I
- 15:48Speaker 2: offended people and they quit being friends. I'm yeah, yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 2: And there's things in high school where I know I
- 15:58Speaker 2: said stuff that I'm sure it wasn't great. Oh yeah,
- 16:03Speaker 2: I wasn't a bully, but I but it was very
- 16:05Speaker 2: you know, it was.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Well you would say henah shit and never tell anybody
- 16:09Speaker 1: you were just correct.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that was kind. That was the joke was that
- 16:14Speaker 2: I said it and then I wanted people to believe it,
- 16:17Speaker 2: just like I told people my dad was the Undertaker
- 16:19Speaker 2: and I never.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And that he played slamball and that he played slam
- 16:22Speaker 1: told people he played slam.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Because I did watch that and it was pretty awesome. Well,
- 16:28Speaker 2: this has been a fun memory. Let's make this a
- 16:32Speaker 2: separate podcast.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I should just stop recording and we'll start over.
- 16:36Speaker 1: The Virgin Suicides nineteen ninety nine's directorial debut from Sophia Coppola,
- 16:44Speaker 1: feature feature.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna say I was looking as well,
- 16:47Speaker 2: and she she dabbled. But first feature film for Sophia Coppla.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Who is the daughter? I think she's a daughter of
- 16:56Speaker 2: for daughter, I don't know if she's a niece.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Okay, technically got its run in the States in two thousand,
- 17:06Speaker 1: but oh really it it was a darling at can
- 17:10Speaker 1: in nineteen.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Okay, can I knew it did some film festival stuff.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it had that run. Released in May of nineteen
- 17:18Speaker 1: ninety nine, and if you need a refresher, The Virgin
- 17:22Speaker 1: Suicides follows the lives of five adolescent sisters in an
- 17:26Speaker 1: upper middle class suburb of Detroit during nineteen seventy five.
- 17:31Speaker 1: The events that unfold in the story are kind of
- 17:34Speaker 1: recollected by a group of grown men who were teenage
- 17:39Speaker 1: boys at the time that were in love with the
- 17:42Speaker 1: girls when they were teenage.
- 17:43Speaker 2: They were very infatuated with what were they like from
- 17:48Speaker 2: thirteen to seventeen?
- 17:49Speaker 1: Thirteen to seventeen girls? Yeah, the girls. We get a
- 17:53Speaker 1: young Josh Hartnett in this.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Which I I him, and I immediately turned to my
- 18:03Speaker 2: first of all, I don't I've never seen this before.
- 18:07Speaker 2: I have not seen this.
- 18:08Speaker 1: I was gonna ask you, no, no, no.
- 18:10Speaker 2: I didn't know if I should say that at the
- 18:12Speaker 2: top or not. But I have not. I knew about it,
- 18:16Speaker 2: and I think I've even seen some stuff about it,
- 18:18Speaker 2: but I forgot James Woods and Kathleen Turner were the parents.
- 18:22Speaker 2: But I saw Josh Hartnett and it wasn't the first scene,
- 18:27Speaker 2: but after a few scenes of him, I'm like, I
- 18:29Speaker 2: can't get over his hair. And my wife's like, I
- 18:32Speaker 2: think my dad had that hairdoo. I'm like, you know
- 18:36Speaker 2: who else had that hairdoo? And I googled it and
- 18:39Speaker 2: showed her and there's something about Mary when Ben Steelers
- 18:42Speaker 2: going to the prom, I showed her a picture. I'm like,
- 18:45Speaker 2: that's that's their hair. Yeah, that's the hair.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I I kind of thought this was earlier in Kirsten
- 18:55Speaker 1: Dunn's career than it was, but now I'm she started
- 19:00Speaker 1: so young, that she started so young. Yeah, but this
- 19:03Speaker 1: this one kind of felt like, I don't know, and
- 19:06Speaker 1: it was the start of a pretty active working relationship
- 19:11Speaker 1: with Sophia Coppola, Yes, throughout the years, but this was
- 19:16Speaker 1: kind of you could watch The Virgin Suicides and see
- 19:21Speaker 1: that this was going to be a precursor for her career,
- 19:27Speaker 1: Coppola's career. There's a vibe to this movie that kind
- 19:32Speaker 1: of stays consistent as a thread through a lot of
- 19:36Speaker 1: Coppola's films.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, this isn't too far off from
- 19:39Speaker 2: when Kirsten Dunz is in Spider Man.
- 19:43Speaker 1: It's not this was ninety nine. Spider Man was two
- 19:46Speaker 1: thousand and two, So I mean, yeah, it's pretty' oh
- 19:51Speaker 1: crazy beautiful was in there. I totally forgot about it.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I forgot about.
- 19:54Speaker 1: That, about that bring it on. As in two thousand,
- 20:00Speaker 1: Margie is in the is before that's in the Jams
- 20:03Speaker 1: ninety five okay, yeah, ninety six, and then she's in
- 20:06Speaker 1: interview with the vampire. How could oh yeah yeah yeah.
- 20:09Speaker 2: So and also the girl the youngest daughter who goes first.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Cecilia, Cecilia.
- 20:19Speaker 2: I sat there for a solid like five minutes. I'm like,
- 20:24Speaker 2: I've seen her in something and I don't know what
- 20:26Speaker 2: it is. I had to google it or I had
- 20:28Speaker 2: to go on IMDb, but she is young Jenny and
- 20:31Speaker 2: Forrest Gump Is that right? Yep? And she doesn't look
- 20:35Speaker 2: that much different now she has gone on and she
- 20:37Speaker 2: has been in some stuff and I guess she's.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Anna Rose Hall is the Actresses. Yeah, and I'm like
- 20:44Speaker 1: zombies Halloween.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So it's just crazy to see. And uh,
- 20:50Speaker 2: what's his name? Tuck? He's one of the boys that's
- 20:54Speaker 2: infatuated with her.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Tucker something to Jonathan Tucker. Yeah, uh as Tim Wiener, Yeah,
- 21:02Speaker 1: I didn't either. Glynn show in this, yes, Hayden Christensen.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Yeah, he's one of the boys that goes to the
- 21:13Speaker 2: problem with one of the other sisters.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Huh.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I told Brady, I'm like, I'm like, do you know
- 21:17Speaker 2: who that is? There's nothing like being excited for catching
- 21:20Speaker 2: like a young, somewhat Hollywood star and your wife has
- 21:25Speaker 2: no idea. I'm like, he does become Darth Vader.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Did you notice who the narrator was, Giovanni Ribisi? Oh?
- 21:35Speaker 2: Is that? And he I'm assuming he was Jonathan Tucker
- 21:41Speaker 2: at a later age. It seemed like things were being
- 21:45Speaker 2: told from that perspective. I also really appreciate the guy
- 21:49Speaker 2: they got to play, the older Josh Hartnett in that movie. Yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 2: I really appreciate that. But such a young, talented cast
- 22:00Speaker 2: and and honestly, the other I mean, obviously the vets
- 22:03Speaker 2: are James Woods and Kathleen Turner, but well, Dane DeVito's
- 22:07Speaker 2: in a scene and like you said, but but yeah,
- 22:11Speaker 2: there is a thread to Sophia Coppola's work because she
- 22:14Speaker 2: her next film would be Lost in Translation.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Yeah, which is one of my one of my favorite films.
- 22:18Speaker 1: That scene for the first time in recent years.
- 22:21Speaker 2: And I I I really we were talking off Mike
- 22:28Speaker 2: about like I remember liking Marie Antoinette, which was another
- 22:33Speaker 2: Sophia Coppola I would like to revisit that because I
- 22:40Speaker 2: no if I would feel the same. I just remember thinking, man,
- 22:43Speaker 2: that's a esthetic, like, well, it looks beautiful, but I
- 22:48Speaker 2: also feel like it it may have been boring.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I don't know, that's yeah, and so and I haven't
- 22:57Speaker 1: I haven't watched it since it was first So I'm
- 23:00Speaker 1: curious to revisit it as well, because a lot of
- 23:05Speaker 1: Kopola stuff I have kind of felt the same way
- 23:08Speaker 1: I felt about The Virgin Suicides, is that it just
- 23:14Speaker 1: one of the hallmarks of her as a filmmaker. To
- 23:17Speaker 1: me is that she really allows time and space for
- 23:22Speaker 1: moments to breathe. And I appreciate that, and it's one
- 23:27Speaker 1: of the things that I think is most endearing about
- 23:29Speaker 1: Loston Translation. But I think there are times when we
- 23:33Speaker 1: linger a little bit too long and my emotional investment
- 23:39Speaker 1: in the moment starts to wane a little bit, and
- 23:41Speaker 1: that's where that's where things can border on a little
- 23:45Speaker 1: bit of boring to me.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, And honestly, I think you can make
- 23:50Speaker 2: a case for that for in every film she's done.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Now, rather you're kind of into it and engaged in
- 23:58Speaker 2: that or totally you know, disconnected from it. But I
- 24:03Speaker 2: think that kind of shows all the way through, even
- 24:06Speaker 2: with The Beguiled, which I which I quite enjoyed, but
- 24:12Speaker 2: I think it's in I think it's in everything that
- 24:15Speaker 2: she does. So there is, but there's also there's a
- 24:18Speaker 2: certain kind of style that I like, Yeah, I'm with you,
- 24:22Speaker 2: and it's there in The Virgin Suicides, but it really
- 24:26Speaker 2: it really goes to another level starting with loss in Translation.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Yeah, And and to speak to that, it is like
- 24:32Speaker 1: the way it shot the music, the way it scored,
- 24:36Speaker 1: like it is a total style piece.
- 24:40Speaker 2: The way they come down in their prom dresses and
- 24:43Speaker 2: everything there is, there is a look to it. And
- 24:47Speaker 2: again this was I think this supposedly took place in
- 24:50Speaker 2: late seventies early eighties, like twenty five years so.
- 24:55Speaker 1: I like that. Who I like the sho of the
- 25:00Speaker 1: house too. The time lapse, oh kind of yeah, it
- 25:05Speaker 1: goes from day to night and the lights come on
- 25:07Speaker 1: and all that. Like, there are some really nice elements
- 25:11Speaker 1: of style in this movie that you watch and you say, okay, yeah,
- 25:16Speaker 1: this is going to be like if she keeps.
- 25:18Speaker 2: This up, this is going yeah, yeah, the Virgin suicides.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Tonally, I want to I'm curious to get your opinion
- 25:27Speaker 1: on because I'm watching the the opening scene and I'm like, oh,
- 25:33Speaker 1: this is, you know, nice summertime vibes, and it's well.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it opens upcurse. Is it a popsicle or a
- 25:39Speaker 2: sucker popsicle? And I think cherry sucker. But either way,
- 25:45Speaker 2: it's like a.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Man watering the yard. Everything's bright, vibrant and green. And
- 25:50Speaker 1: then the next scene is Cecilia in the bathtub with
- 25:54Speaker 1: her wrist and she survives that, but it does kind
- 25:58Speaker 1: of you know right off the bat, there's gonna be
- 26:02Speaker 1: a weird dynamic here. Yeah, it's something I felt a
- 26:06Speaker 1: lot throughout the film. It's very stylistic, it's a very
- 26:10Speaker 1: quirky film, but some of the humor is a little
- 26:14Speaker 1: unsettling that the subject matter is a little intense. Yeah,
- 26:19Speaker 1: but I think of like the scene when I'm spoiler
- 26:23Speaker 1: alert this is a twenty seven year old movie.
- 26:26Speaker 2: At yeah, point, we should be fine.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I think we're okay, but when Cecilia jumps out of
- 26:32Speaker 1: the window and lands on the fence and everybody's trying
- 26:35Speaker 1: to process it, and then the sprinkler goes off. Yeah,
- 26:39Speaker 1: and it's this like quiet moment and you're kind of
- 26:41Speaker 1: like like, I don't know about you, but I'm but
- 26:44Speaker 1: watching what.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Happens at a party. Yeah, the boys just leave. But
- 26:49Speaker 2: then I'm like, if they're fourteen or fifteen or so,
- 26:51Speaker 2: I mean, what do you like? There is kind of
- 26:53Speaker 2: this awkwardness, but then it's like what what do you do?
- 26:59Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 27:00Speaker 2: And how I mean, how do you expect kids to
- 27:03Speaker 2: react to that? And specifically these kids, because these kids
- 27:06Speaker 2: are the ones who are been spy I mean wanting
- 27:10Speaker 2: to get close to them for Yeah, it seems like
- 27:12Speaker 2: since they've lived across the street. So I think like
- 27:16Speaker 2: in moment, I noticed the sprinkler thing too, and I'm like, huh.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I see stuff like that, and I'm like, you know,
- 27:22Speaker 1: I like the larger theme here that you know, it
- 27:25Speaker 1: does kind of play into a teenagers kind of suck,
- 27:30Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, And it's like she sees the events
- 27:36Speaker 1: that unfold at this party and she's just like, I
- 27:38Speaker 1: don't this is this is top You're going to go
- 27:43Speaker 1: do this and it kind of kicks off the cavalcade
- 27:47Speaker 1: of events that follow. But I'm just curious about that
- 27:51Speaker 1: kind of vibe because we see it. It pops up
- 27:53Speaker 1: a couple of other times in the film throughout it
- 27:55Speaker 1: where it's like, I mean, even like when she survives
- 27:59Speaker 1: as early is when she survives the first suicide attempt
- 28:03Speaker 1: and she tells the doctor, well, obviously, doctor, you've never
- 28:07Speaker 1: been a thirteen year old girl. Yeah, it's like that's funny,
- 28:10Speaker 1: that's a nice little quick But then I'm thinking, you're
- 28:13Speaker 1: a little girl in the hospital because you cut your wrists. Yeah, So,
- 28:16Speaker 1: tonally speaking, did this movie work.
- 28:19Speaker 2: For you or I wasn't as I wasn't that thrown
- 28:23Speaker 2: off by it. And I think it's because, like it's
- 28:29Speaker 2: it's already kind of starting with the boys perspective of
- 28:33Speaker 2: this family that throughout and especially as as it ends,
- 28:42Speaker 2: there's a lot to still be answered for. Yeah, I
- 28:46Speaker 2: think there's hints of it, of what's happening, but what
- 28:50Speaker 2: actually drove them to that. Yes, I think Sophia leaves
- 28:57Speaker 2: it to where like you can blame the mother. Yeah,
- 29:00Speaker 2: but clearly there's more to it, I feel like. But
- 29:04Speaker 2: that's but we're seeing for better or for worse, we're
- 29:08Speaker 2: seeing what they interpret it as. And again, these are kids. Yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 2: so I feel like some things you could kind of take, like,
- 29:17Speaker 2: there's the one thing I felt like, and this I
- 29:22Speaker 2: felt like was the nice balance because I didn't quite
- 29:24Speaker 2: see it coming. But the way that it's first introduced,
- 29:28Speaker 2: it's almost like it's intentional. Is when it gets towards
- 29:34Speaker 2: the end and the boys come over and they're talking
- 29:37Speaker 2: to Kirsen Dunst and she's talking about how hey stay
- 29:41Speaker 2: here and wait for my sisters, and she's still flirty
- 29:44Speaker 2: and everything, even though something horrific has gone on in
- 29:48Speaker 2: that house and she knows what's about to happen. That
- 29:54Speaker 2: to me makes it more haunting than if you played
- 30:01Speaker 2: it up as maybe a straight sad, weepy drama, like
- 30:06Speaker 2: there's just something about that and then saying, oh, this
- 30:13Speaker 2: is what was going on. But there's also I don't know,
- 30:16Speaker 2: I think I just accepted it early on of the
- 30:20Speaker 2: kind of tone it's trying to set, but also the
- 30:24Speaker 2: way it kind of flirts with different genres where it's
- 30:29Speaker 2: almost like a a little bit of a it is
- 30:32Speaker 2: a coming of age story for sure, but there's also
- 30:35Speaker 2: this little bit of like a you know, there's there's
- 30:40Speaker 2: a piece of like before or maybe after, but like
- 30:45Speaker 2: a she's all that or oh the girl and oh
- 30:48Speaker 2: they're all you know, they're starting to get out of
- 30:49Speaker 2: their shells and oh they're starting to talk to boys
- 30:53Speaker 2: and oh their mom's letting them do like but then
- 30:58Speaker 2: it kind of it's turns back again and it you know,
- 31:02Speaker 2: it kind of starts with the curfew thing, which I
- 31:05Speaker 2: can't really ever really forgive Josh harten Itt for just
- 31:08Speaker 2: leaving her on that football field.
- 31:09Speaker 1: That's a dick that was yeah, but again kind of
- 31:12Speaker 1: a testament to teenagers fucking suck.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and he just says he loved her, but in
- 31:18Speaker 2: that moment it wasn't. But then it's the effects of that, Yeah,
- 31:23Speaker 2: not just like missing curfew, but what he meant to her.
- 31:28Speaker 2: And then it's kind of like, hey, Cecilia was right,
- 31:34Speaker 2: I feel.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Like adding effect to what you just said. There are
- 31:40Speaker 1: parts of this film that, the way it shot and
- 31:44Speaker 1: the way it scored, feel like a dream like state. Yes.
- 31:50Speaker 1: The reason I find that to be so compelling and
- 31:52Speaker 1: effective is because we have to go back to this
- 31:57Speaker 1: story being recalled by the boys as adults, and so
- 32:05Speaker 1: it allows you to kind of see the girls in
- 32:08Speaker 1: this sort of mysterious dare I say mythological sense? Oh yeah,
- 32:14Speaker 1: ethereal even that they saw them at the time. And
- 32:18Speaker 1: to me, that was where I really I really appreciated
- 32:23Speaker 1: this story was that using techniques in filmmaking to hammer
- 32:29Speaker 1: home and make you feel like you were seeing the
- 32:33Speaker 1: girls as the boys did.
- 32:35Speaker 2: I thought was a really it was very fantasy. Yeah,
- 32:39Speaker 2: and even when Josh Hartnett, who's mister Coole, comes in,
- 32:44Speaker 2: she here's a scare, that's she fallen head over here,
- 32:49Speaker 2: Like that's not Yeah, that's not how they That's not
- 32:52Speaker 2: how these girls are. And part of it, yes, is
- 32:55Speaker 2: their upbringing, but they also do know what what they
- 33:02Speaker 2: have they're not. They're not you know, they're not stupid
- 33:06Speaker 2: for thinking on how boys could perceive them. But there
- 33:12Speaker 2: is a there is a very fantasy light thing about it,
- 33:16Speaker 2: and I think that I I mean, looking back, that's
- 33:19Speaker 2: that's the opening scene is almost like a sure because
- 33:23Speaker 2: the boys sitting why they're looking, and then like even
- 33:27Speaker 2: as things kind of get darker, you know, they're spying
- 33:31Speaker 2: on them and seeing what she's doing especially and everything,
- 33:34Speaker 2: and so that's that is very true. And then but
- 33:39Speaker 2: there's also there is obviously there is a sadness to
- 33:42Speaker 2: the film. But but when she does it seems like
- 33:44Speaker 2: when the girls are finally having a good time and
- 33:48Speaker 2: kind of letting their hair down in a way, and
- 33:52Speaker 2: you know they're kind of punished for it, and there's
- 33:55Speaker 2: a sadness to it, but there's also a huge I mean,
- 33:58Speaker 2: the whole film is almost I mean rebellious, Yeah, rebellious.
- 34:03Speaker 1: You mentioned the film being set in the seventies. I
- 34:06Speaker 1: found this to be another nice artistic touch to the film.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Was Yah, all of the the seventies nostalgia, the music,
- 34:15Speaker 1: the music especially I can't remember the name of the
- 34:19Speaker 1: actual song, the Magic Man song when Yeah, we meet
- 34:22Speaker 1: Josh Hartnet's character for the first time was walking through
- 34:25Speaker 1: the high school.
- 34:25Speaker 2: That's perfect.
- 34:26Speaker 1: I thought that was really good.
- 34:27Speaker 2: H do you know what I And I've heard the
- 34:30Speaker 2: song before, but I had no idea who's sang it
- 34:34Speaker 2: or anything. But it's at their little party when Cecilia
- 34:39Speaker 2: the last thing Cecilia does, and it's a song called
- 34:43Speaker 2: the Air that I Breathe, and it's in the background.
- 34:46Speaker 2: It's like the Air I breathe. Yeah, And I'm like,
- 34:50Speaker 2: I told Britt, I'm like, I know that song. I
- 34:53Speaker 2: must have heard everything, I would say. I looked it
- 34:55Speaker 2: up it and for people that don't know, it was
- 34:57Speaker 2: a nineteen seventy four song from The Holly and I
- 35:01Speaker 2: have listened to it every day since then and I
- 35:04Speaker 2: love it.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it.
- 35:05Speaker 2: But but the Magic Man when he comes in, like
- 35:08Speaker 2: Sophia Coupla had a at a killer soundtrack.
- 35:11Speaker 1: I just nailed it. Like there's a few.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Other ones that they that come in. There's the Magic
- 35:17Speaker 2: Magic Man one when he's doing his thing.
- 35:21Speaker 1: But it's such a good scene, such a great sound yea.
- 35:24Speaker 1: And I like Josh Hartnett in this like because I
- 35:27Speaker 1: think he looks so awkward and it's like it's not
- 35:32Speaker 1: he's the heart throb.
- 35:34Speaker 2: And waiting from the zipp his balls up in his hands.
- 35:38Speaker 1: He's the heart throb at the high school. But at
- 35:40Speaker 1: the same time he plays it with this sort of
- 35:45Speaker 1: awkwardness that like he's still a teenager.
- 35:47Speaker 2: You know, it's just he thinks is cool and when
- 35:51Speaker 2: you if you get a little older, you realize like, oh,
- 35:54Speaker 2: it's a bit cringe. But you know what's crazy is that?
- 35:58Speaker 2: And I get it, and like part of it has
- 35:59Speaker 2: to be the hair, I'm sure, And who knows when
- 36:01Speaker 2: he filmed it, but you know, by the time you're
- 36:05Speaker 2: only talking about a couple of years later. He's in
- 36:07Speaker 2: the faculties in Halloween h two and he looks totally different.
- 36:11Speaker 2: It was he looks like a child, and then he's
- 36:15Speaker 2: kind of at least somewhat of a guy in those
- 36:19Speaker 2: other movies, so I'm assuming.
- 36:21Speaker 1: They had a real gross Burt. There was one scene
- 36:26Speaker 1: when he's in the car with the other boys, and
- 36:31Speaker 1: I'm kind of like, Okay, he looks like he's like
- 36:33Speaker 1: five years older.
- 36:34Speaker 2: When he's in the passage, like yeah, yeah, yeah, when
- 36:36Speaker 2: he tells them to be quiet or something.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Yet yeah, but otherwise I think, Uh, but.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Is it just me? He seems tall but he doesn't
- 36:43Speaker 2: even he seems taller in those faculty and like it's
- 36:48Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't But when he's with those
- 36:50Speaker 2: other which one of the kids is hating Christiansen who's
- 36:53Speaker 2: in the back, which.
- 36:54Speaker 1: I didn't even care.
- 36:54Speaker 2: It looks even yeah, like they do look like children.
- 36:59Speaker 2: It's it's when crazy.
- 37:01Speaker 1: When has the last when is the last time you've said? Boy?
- 37:05Speaker 1: I really enjoyed James Woods in this because I thought
- 37:10Speaker 1: I thought he you are right there?
- 37:13Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry, I thought.
- 37:14Speaker 1: He stole a few scenes as kind of like the
- 37:17Speaker 1: cringey dad, yelash teacher that.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Well, he's fresh on my mind because we did any
- 37:22Speaker 2: given Sunday.
- 37:23Speaker 1: But James Woods nineteen ninety nine, he was, he was
- 37:26Speaker 1: on point.
- 37:27Speaker 2: I loved his uh style, that's a very seventies dad, but.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Another nice touch to add to the atmosphere.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Uh.
- 37:37Speaker 2: When he is falling asleep and she says, hey, it's
- 37:42Speaker 2: time to go and he just like he's also awkward,
- 37:45Speaker 2: he just gets up and and then like and honestly,
- 37:48Speaker 2: I like I understood the scene. It felt out of place,
- 37:52Speaker 2: but I liked it when like it's brought up that
- 37:55Speaker 2: his kids haven't been there in two weeks, but he's
- 37:57Speaker 2: mainly just talking to those plants.
- 38:00Speaker 1: I think that's did you did you check out back? Right?
- 38:05Speaker 2: And I think that kind of is his character of like, well,
- 38:11Speaker 2: for prom when he's a chaperone, but he meets the
- 38:14Speaker 2: boys and the girls and and he is sort of
- 38:18Speaker 2: ignorant to it all. But I think more importantly it's
- 38:23Speaker 2: that Kathleen Turner wears the pan like if he could
- 38:27Speaker 2: have maybe be maybe been more like he kind of
- 38:31Speaker 2: stood up for some of it, yeah, instead of letting
- 38:35Speaker 2: like and there's there's attempts.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Yeah, but because he even tells Josh Harten, it's character like, well,
- 38:43Speaker 1: I'll do my best. When he's he's he says, I've
- 38:46Speaker 1: got to talk to my wife about yeah, yeah, letting
- 38:49Speaker 1: him go to prom. And he says, I'll put in
- 38:51Speaker 1: a word, I'll do.
- 38:51Speaker 2: My best, but yeah, and he does that little laugh
- 38:53Speaker 2: like it probably won't get far. Yeah, and it does.
- 38:57Speaker 1: You know who the boss is?
- 38:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and it does kind of. But and then when
- 39:00Speaker 2: like as as the film goes on, it's kind of
- 39:04Speaker 2: like he couldn't it Maybe it could have been prevented
- 39:09Speaker 2: if if he had a different approach to it, because.
- 39:13Speaker 1: I hadn't considered that perspective before.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Even understanding of what and of what this time in
- 39:23Speaker 2: their life means. But he can't he's not gonna he's
- 39:28Speaker 2: you know, he's not gonna win that war with his wife.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Yeah, the juxtaposition of him versus the teenagers in this film,
- 39:35Speaker 1: it's like he really is the more relatable, understanding character.
- 39:41Speaker 2: He is and and he's not, you know, James Woods
- 39:44Speaker 2: typically doesn't play that kind of guy. But boy, did
- 39:49Speaker 2: they get a great I mean, I wouldn't believe I
- 39:52Speaker 2: wouldn't mess with Kathleen Turner, so.
- 39:54Speaker 1: No, hell no.
- 39:55Speaker 2: But but I do think there's at least a a
- 39:59Speaker 2: piece of at that says if that dynamic was different,
- 40:05Speaker 2: could could those girls have lived a different life.
- 40:08Speaker 1: That's that's a really interesting point that I hadn't considered
- 40:11Speaker 1: with his with his character because.
- 40:13Speaker 2: He just you and I think Sophia makes a point
- 40:16Speaker 2: as far as the dynamic between the two, but also
- 40:19Speaker 2: who kind of overrules who? But also if we could
- 40:23Speaker 2: have had more of his approach, maybe maybe they're you know,
- 40:29Speaker 2: because they were in such quarantine, but you could tell
- 40:31Speaker 2: that he was, I mean, he was not in command.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Do you do you have a star rating for this
- 40:38Speaker 1: where you landed on it?
- 40:41Speaker 2: I mean I I didn't, but I would probably say
- 40:43Speaker 2: like a I'd probably say like a three, maybe three
- 40:47Speaker 2: and a half.
- 40:48Speaker 1: I gave it a three, three out of five.
- 40:50Speaker 2: I mean a three seems good because I mean, obviously
- 40:52Speaker 2: that's a good score. But and that is something where like,
- 40:55Speaker 2: like I said, Sophia Coppla, there's definitely signs of what
- 41:00Speaker 2: the filmmaker she would be, and going from from this
- 41:02Speaker 2: one to lost in translation, I think is rather impressive.
- 41:06Speaker 1: It is man.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Even though she still has those touches up to up
- 41:10Speaker 2: to now. Yeah, but but yeah, I would give it yeah, yeah.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Which I mean still like her, it's the style. But yeah,
- 41:21Speaker 1: I landed on a three out of five. Yeah. After
- 41:25Speaker 1: I watched the film, I went back to kind of
- 41:28Speaker 1: review the plot, and I caught myself thinking, Man, if
- 41:32Speaker 1: I had just read the plot before watching the movie,
- 41:36Speaker 1: this sounds like my kind of story. It sounds quite compelling,
- 41:42Speaker 1: quite interesting, and I think it's those moments that I
- 41:46Speaker 1: mentioned earlier, and I immediately my mind immediately goes to
- 41:50Speaker 1: the theater scene where Josh Hartnett and Kirsten Dunst are
- 41:54Speaker 1: in the theater flirting and like that is where stuff
- 41:58Speaker 1: like that. I'm like, all right, I get what you're
- 42:01Speaker 1: putting down. We can move on to the next thing.
- 42:04Speaker 1: And I think ultimately there were too many moments like
- 42:07Speaker 1: that for me that I caught myself like checking the
- 42:10Speaker 1: clock or checking my email.
- 42:13Speaker 2: It does feel a little longer than an hour and a.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Half to be an hour and a half. I'm like,
- 42:18Speaker 1: you know, this thing kind of drags in parts where
- 42:20Speaker 1: I don't feel like it should. So I landed on
- 42:23Speaker 1: like the plot sounds really compelling. The execution I think
- 42:28Speaker 1: left a little to be desired for me, and it
- 42:31Speaker 1: felt a little long when it really wasn't that long.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, No, I think it's fair. I think there's
- 42:36Speaker 2: a lot of you can take away. Yeah, I think
- 42:39Speaker 2: it's things you can take away just from style, storytelling performances.
- 42:44Speaker 2: But yes, I do think there it's not it's not again,
- 42:49Speaker 2: it's just not the film I thought it would be,
- 42:51Speaker 2: and it is slow, but there are things in there
- 42:54Speaker 2: that just are quite compelling. And in this story of
- 42:59Speaker 2: just in what is a tragedy, but this coming of
- 43:03Speaker 2: age and the fact of like what what could have been?
- 43:07Speaker 2: And what if, you know, James Woods was different, or
- 43:12Speaker 2: what if Josh Harten it didn't leave her on the field,
- 43:15Speaker 2: what if she got home. That's the stuff I like,
- 43:18Speaker 2: because it just thinks like, well, gosh, maybe that's maybe
- 43:23Speaker 2: that's the only change and it could have led to
- 43:25Speaker 2: just like.
- 43:25Speaker 1: How close were we to this tragedy not happening?
- 43:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but then I will say and again I
- 43:31Speaker 2: when I when it went off, I remember thinking it
- 43:35Speaker 2: there's definitely a a haunting part of it because just
- 43:41Speaker 2: then just to imagine that they all go in the
- 43:46Speaker 2: way that they did, and a lot of it really
- 43:50Speaker 2: struck me when she when Kristen Dunce is talking to
- 43:53Speaker 2: them at the front door.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Why because we know, like now we.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Know what's happening, and she's it's like this, I mean,
- 43:59Speaker 2: it's unfathomable. But I do again, never read the book,
- 44:06Speaker 2: but I do feel like there is the only thing
- 44:09Speaker 2: I would say even and yes, I agree it does
- 44:12Speaker 2: feel too long when it's shouldn't and there's things where
- 44:14Speaker 2: we kind of linger too much. But I think the
- 44:21Speaker 2: the idea of the boys telling the story and painting
- 44:26Speaker 2: their own picture of these girls and then ending up
- 44:30Speaker 2: you know what their fate becomes. Yeah, there is something
- 44:36Speaker 2: quite fascinating about that. That, and I I think it
- 44:41Speaker 2: does make a difference that there was a female director,
- 44:45Speaker 2: yeah telling that story.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Yeah, fair enough. In twenty fifteen, this ranked number thirty
- 44:52Speaker 1: nine on Entertainment Weekly's list of the fifty best high
- 44:56Speaker 1: school movies. Wow, I h this is not the first
- 45:01Speaker 1: movie I would think of when I think of a
- 45:02Speaker 1: high school No, yeah, no, because my mind goes to
- 45:05Speaker 1: like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Ferris Buehler's Day Off,
- 45:10Speaker 1: super bad stuff like that. But when you think about
- 45:14Speaker 1: it in those terms of it literally being set among
- 45:19Speaker 1: high schoolers, like, yeah, I mean it's hard not to
- 45:23Speaker 1: count it. But where do you think this will stand
- 45:26Speaker 1: for you in that genre of quote unquote high school
- 45:33Speaker 1: I don't think I would think of it this way.
- 45:35Speaker 2: I wouldn't, even though it's justifiable to put it in that.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Yeah, ten things I Hate about you?
- 45:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we sort of tend to think of
- 45:47Speaker 2: more lighthearted stuff too. Yeah, during this time, right, like
- 45:51Speaker 2: even like easy as you want to go with a
- 45:56Speaker 2: somewhat more recent one, Yeah, I mean, it wouldn't be
- 45:59Speaker 2: it wouldn't be in my top ten or top twenty
- 46:02Speaker 2: for sure.
- 46:03Speaker 1: We need to we need to put together like a
- 46:06Speaker 1: subgenre of high school movies that also has like stuff
- 46:09Speaker 1: like Ladybird in it and like Juno for example.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Oh, Juno's a good one.
- 46:16Speaker 1: We need like.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Well crafted high school Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Then I can I can get down with this being
- 46:22Speaker 1: pretty high on the list. I would think.
- 46:24Speaker 2: I think if you put it in those terms, because
- 46:26Speaker 2: now you're now you kind of have to get genre
- 46:29Speaker 2: out of your head and just say, Okay, if it
- 46:32Speaker 2: took place in high school, then this is what it is.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Because I feel like you can go from like we
- 46:38Speaker 2: talked about easy and fast times at Ridgemont High to
- 46:41Speaker 2: Juno to Friday night Lights.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I mean, mean, girls, you can't go.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Oh well, they people probably that's probably one of the
- 46:47Speaker 2: first ones they think of. But but yeah, and I
- 46:51Speaker 2: and I think this has staying power because of who
- 46:56Speaker 2: is directed by, and especially and listening against the rest
- 47:00Speaker 2: of the cast. But it's Sophia and Kirsten Dunt's first thing,
- 47:05Speaker 2: and they've gone on to do some tremendous work separately
- 47:09Speaker 2: and together, And I think for this to be a
- 47:12Speaker 2: feature film debut, does it means? It means more. I
- 47:21Speaker 2: think that this was her her first outing and she
- 47:25Speaker 2: was able to kind of tell the story that like
- 47:28Speaker 2: she did.
- 47:29Speaker 1: This has inspired me to go back and watch Marie Antoinette,
- 47:32Speaker 1: but to also go back and rewatch The Beguiled as well,
- 47:36Speaker 1: because outside of Lost in Translation, those are the two
- 47:39Speaker 1: movies that come to mind right away when I think
- 47:42Speaker 1: is Sophia Coppola. But I might like The Virgin Suicides
- 47:47Speaker 1: more than both of those if I go back, it's fresh.
- 47:51Speaker 2: I think The Beguile I think might be my favorite
- 47:54Speaker 2: of hers. And if I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure.
- 47:58Speaker 2: You know she did that movie, the Apple TV movie
- 48:00Speaker 2: on the Rocks with Bill Murray, Yeah, and Rashida Jones.
- 48:03Speaker 1: But I didn't realize she did a very Murray Christmas.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Yeah I didn't either. I saw that too, but she did.
- 48:07Speaker 2: I think she did one called Somewhere that has l
- 48:09Speaker 2: Fanning and Stephen.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I never saw I never saw that one. I
- 48:15Speaker 1: can well. I actually just closed out of all my
- 48:19Speaker 1: tasks about to Steven. I was about to send us
- 48:23Speaker 1: home from my.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Gosh, I know, and I kind of wanted to watch
- 48:26Speaker 2: that again.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Let's see here. It is somewhere.
- 48:31Speaker 2: He's in Blade Movies.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Stephen Dorf, Yes, so I Stephen dof el Fanning. I
- 48:40Speaker 1: feel like Chris Pan of Jackass fan. Michelle Monaghan is
- 48:46Speaker 1: in it.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Oh, hey, I know her. I would. I would. When
- 48:51Speaker 2: I look back, I think of The Beguile and Marie
- 48:54Speaker 2: Antoinette and then Lost in Translation is what I think of.
- 49:00Speaker 2: But I am wondering how like how they hold up?
- 49:03Speaker 1: Now? Yeah, did you watch the Mark Jacobs.
- 49:07Speaker 2: I haven't seen that yet. No, No, I'm shocked because
- 49:11Speaker 2: I don't even know if Bell Court anybody got it.
- 49:13Speaker 2: I haven't seen haven't seen it available at all, but
- 49:16Speaker 2: I would like to see it. I heard it's just
- 49:18Speaker 2: really just a showcase for Mark Jacobs. And they've been
- 49:21Speaker 2: friends for like, I don't know how many years. So
- 49:24Speaker 2: but yeah, I always and you know her and Kristen
- 49:26Speaker 2: dunts are. We're working on something together again. And I
- 49:29Speaker 2: don't know if you've got scrapped in but I'm I'm
- 49:32Speaker 2: curious because that they'll they'll work again. There's no way.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Yeah, well, any any parting thoughts.
- 49:39Speaker 2: We I'm happy, I'm happy we did this and I'm
- 49:42Speaker 2: happy to actually have sat down and watched it all.
- 49:45Speaker 2: It was a very interesting experience watching something like this
- 49:50Speaker 2: that it's okay to laugh, but it's also awkward and
- 49:54Speaker 2: it's also very sad.
- 49:57Speaker 1: Yeah, but.
- 50:00Speaker 2: I'm just more amazed of kind of the way that
- 50:04Speaker 2: it was done and the cast and seeing them back then,
- 50:09Speaker 2: and it's kind of like, you know, like I have
- 50:11Speaker 2: no problem with that casting at all. It really was
- 50:15Speaker 2: good works to her favor, and especially as like you
- 50:17Speaker 2: said of first film, I mean, I guess if your
- 50:19Speaker 2: dad is Francis Sporge, you can probably hit away with
- 50:22Speaker 2: this stuff.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Pretty sure. He was a producer.
- 50:23Speaker 2: I'm sure his wine minding or somebody paid for it.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's gonna do it for us. And this
- 50:28Speaker 1: month's episode, well, actually you're getting two episodes this month
- 50:32Speaker 1: because there's there's two Mondays in June. That's gonna do
- 50:36Speaker 1: it for this episode of movie review rewind on Nashville
- 50:39Speaker 1: Movie Dispatch. As a reminder, you can check out all
- 50:42Speaker 1: of our work at Nashvillemoviedispatch dot substack dot com. He's Brandon,
