- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Dan Irvin.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Well, welcome back today to the Five Good Minutes podcast.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: We're nearing the conclusion of Genesis chapter 40 today.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And what we see is Joseph's interpretations of the dreams that the cupbearer will be restored to his position of prominence and power while the baker will die.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: And then three days later, this happens exactly as Joseph says it will.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: This is verses 20 through 22, if you want to take a look.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: And what's important about this, and I think something we can understand and know, is that sometimes the word of God, in this case, the interpretations of these dreams that came through Joseph from God, is not always the thing that we are delighted to hear.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: You know, I imagine for the cupbearer, he was delighted to hear this news, and the baker was obviously not.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And I think we can tend to think about God as if someone, if he loves us, if he's for us, then he'll tell us what we want to hear, what things that make us feel good.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And sometimes that's true.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: You know, in God's word we read that we are we are loved, we are forgiven, we are adopted sons and daughters, that we are never alone.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: These are beautiful truths and beautiful realities that we read, but but God's word also says things that maybe we don't particularly want to hear, is that our our sinfulness is more serious than we think, that we are incapable of saving ourselves.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: The Bible tells us that we're not basically good people who occasionally do some wrong things, but that we're sinners in need of God's grace.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: At our root, we are we are wretched.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: That's not the popular side of the message of God, but it's the reality.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: And you can think of it like you walk into the doctor's office and you have a serious condition that the doctor discovers, and the doctor says, Don't worry about it too much.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: I'm sure it'll work itself out.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Where in reality, the doctor knows that unless you get the care that you need, the medicine that you need, the remedy that you need, that you will certainly die.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: And you might feel better when you walk out of that room for the next few minutes if the doctor says, Don't worry about it, you know, nothing wrong here.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: But over the course of time, what will happen is that serious condition, if you're never told about it, if you're never able to get the proper care and treatment you need, that it will, your body will deteriorate and it will it will begin to take effect.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: It wouldn't be the loving thing to do for that doctor to withhold that kind of news.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: You see, the reality of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that we have to understand the tragedy, the fallenness of our own soul, of our own condition, before we can understand the good news, the greatest news of all time, that God moved into the world.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: He gave us his son, Jesus.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: And you know, the gospel doesn't begin by saying you're you're basically okay.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: The gospel says you are more wretched and broken than you could ever imagine, but you're also more loved and cherished than you could ever dream about.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: You know, oftentimes I think we we want one without the other.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: We want the forgiveness, but we don't want true repentance.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: We want grace, but we don't want to admit that that we really are in need of this grace.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: We want to think we're okay.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: But that's the thing about grace is that we can't understand our need for grace until we understand how much God the lengths that God went to to rescue us and save us.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: So imagine somebody, again, you can look at it one other way.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Imagine someone throws you a life raft and you're you're just sitting comfortably on the beach.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: You say, hey, thanks, but but I don't need that.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: But if you go into the ocean and get, you know, sucked out by the undertow, uh suddenly that life preserver becomes something of great need.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: You know, the gospel is a beautiful recognition that Jesus didn't come to make the the all right people even more alright or the healthy people even more healthy, but he came to rescue people that that could not rescue themselves.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: That is the story of the cross.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Jesus Christ, in his love for us and his grace for us, he he goes to great lengths to first tell us the hard news, but then to ultimately bring us back to him.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: You know, if this is true, if this is reality, the question to ask yourself today is will you let God do the work of changing your life with this life-changing news today?
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's news you've heard before, maybe it's it's new to you today.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: But the reality is that we have to understand the difficult nature of our own soul before we can understand the lengths that God went to to bring us back to Him.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: God, thank you for this reality, for this truth, God, that your gospel message is for me, the sinner who's in need of your grace.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: God help me to understand that today.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Amen.
