- 0:00Speaker 1: The 1110 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief Husker Buzz Edition
- 0:04Speaker 1: with Sean Callahan before tomorrow night's game in Lincoln. Sean,
- 0:08Speaker 1: let's go back 25 years ago because there was a
- 0:11Speaker 1: lot of conversation as to whether Nebraska would play a
- 0:13Speaker 1: football game that Saturday, right?
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it happened quickly. As you can remember, there was
- 0:19Speaker 2: a Tuesday press conference that they were going to have.
- 0:21Speaker 2: This is a regular weekly presser. Nebraska, I believe, was
- 0:24Speaker 2: ranked number one In the country at that point with
- 0:27Speaker 2: Eric Crouch and 9-11 happened, they called off the presser,
- 0:31Speaker 2: which then led to calling off the game a few
- 0:33Speaker 2: days later on Saturday. But it worked out that both
- 0:38Speaker 2: Rice and Nebraska were open. They had a bye week
- 0:42Speaker 2: the next week. So what they did was say, you
- 0:46Speaker 2: know what, we'll play then on Thursday at that point.
- 0:49Speaker 2: And Nebraska and Rice played a football game on Thursday,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and it was the first sporting event, major sporting event,
- 0:56Speaker 2: to happen in the country, if you can remember, when
- 0:59Speaker 2: they did that. And I think there was some thought like, man,
- 1:02Speaker 2: is it going to be a full house still? Will
- 1:04Speaker 2: Husker fans still come down? Because if I can remember correctly,
- 1:07Speaker 2: it was a 6 p.m. kickoff on a regular workday.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I had class. And I was also the student radio
- 1:15Speaker 2: sports director. So I finished the class until like 4 o'clock, 4.30,
- 1:20Speaker 2: then raced into the stadium, did our pregame show, and
- 1:24Speaker 2: the stadium was packed. I mean, that's what I'll always
- 1:26Speaker 2: remember about that night was, considering the circumstance, that Nebraska
- 1:31Speaker 2: fans were there, and it was a very emotional scene
- 1:33Speaker 2: in Memorial Stadium, a very patriotic tribute with the band
- 1:38Speaker 2: that they played after the game was over with. And
- 1:40Speaker 2: just one of those moments Husker games you'll never forget.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah, one of the things I really remember in the
- 1:47Speaker 1: wake of the attacks 25 years ago was any opportunity
- 1:51Speaker 1: after that to get together with people. Kind of had
- 1:53Speaker 1: a renewed sense of purpose and appreciation for it. And, yeah,
- 1:59Speaker 1: that Nebraska football game. But just over a week after
- 2:04Speaker 1: the attacks on that Tuesday, on Thursday, September 20th, Rice
- 2:08Speaker 1: comes to Memorial Stadium. By the way, we won 48-3. Yeah,
- 2:12Speaker 1: Nebraska was ranked number one. 25 years ago was a very,
- 2:16Speaker 1: very long time ago, it seems, on a lot of fronts, Sean.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So now Nebraska is kind of looking to see what
- 2:24Speaker 1: the 2026 campaign brings. And we got the Falcons of
- 2:28Speaker 1: Bowling Green coming to Memorial Stadium tomorrow night. Sean, what
- 2:32Speaker 1: are your keys to the game?
- 2:35Speaker 2: Key number one, play faster on defense. Obviously get off
- 2:38Speaker 2: to a better start, but just go out there and
- 2:40Speaker 2: fly around early in this game. Get quick three and outs.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Get off the field. Would like to see the drops
- 2:46Speaker 2: cleaned up with the receivers and the quarterback play. And
- 2:50Speaker 2: then just the procedural penalties, the special teams penalties, but
- 2:54Speaker 2: false starts and things like that. Running back to me, too,
- 2:58Speaker 2: is big. Just finding the right rotation, how that's going
- 3:01Speaker 2: to feel. I do think it's going to be different
- 3:03Speaker 2: a lot. They have three guys that can play, and
- 3:05Speaker 2: I think we easily can dismiss Isaiah Mosey from week one.
- 3:08Speaker 2: But it could very well be him that's the leading
- 3:10Speaker 2: rusher on Saturday. Went up front on defense. I think
- 3:13Speaker 2: that's another big part of this game for Nebraska. When
- 3:17Speaker 2: Nebraska's not blitzing, I would like to see their defensive
- 3:20Speaker 2: linemen get some wins and take control of the line
- 3:23Speaker 2: of scrimmage. And then give the crowd a reason to
- 3:26Speaker 2: get into this game. It's a night game. It's going
- 3:28Speaker 2: to be awesome weather. We've got the America 250 drone
- 3:31Speaker 2: show that's going to follow the game. Get this crowd
- 3:35Speaker 2: engaged here after especially sitting through one of the hottest
- 3:39Speaker 2: games a week ago, Memorial Stadium, we can remember in years.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I was talking to my uncle yesterday, and he said, yeah,
- 3:45Speaker 1: I went to the game. I had to go find
- 3:47Speaker 1: some shade in the second half. It was so miserably hot. So, yeah,
- 3:51Speaker 1: Husker fans have earned much better weather tomorrow night. That
- 3:55Speaker 1: drone show is going to be after the game tomorrow?
- 3:58Speaker 2: Correct. They will do the America 250 drone show following
- 4:01Speaker 2: the game, and it will happen pretty quickly after the
- 4:04Speaker 2: game ends. So, reason to want to stay in the stadium,
- 4:08Speaker 2: or at least be positioned somewhere where you can see
- 4:10Speaker 2: it when the game ends. I do know people that
- 4:14Speaker 2: sit in that north end zone. The drone shows are
- 4:16Speaker 2: hard because they can't see the drone show because it's
- 4:19Speaker 2: behind them.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it's got a bump over their head, but Um, yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 1: for anyone who's never experienced the drone show Memorial stadium,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and you're thinking that we want to leave a little
- 4:28Speaker 1: bit early. Do we want to stay for this? You
- 4:29Speaker 1: want to stay for it. It is absolutely world-class incredible.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And Sean, as far as the football goes, I get
- 4:36Speaker 1: a sense, even though we won handily looked much better, uh,
- 4:40Speaker 1: throughout the second half, certainly against Ohio last week. I
- 4:44Speaker 1: still got a sense that this team still feels like
- 4:47Speaker 1: they got a little bit of a chip on their shoulder.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Don't you?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Oh yeah. They're, It's unfinished business with this group. I
- 4:54Speaker 2: think last week, the way they came back at the
- 4:57Speaker 2: end and played was what you want to see. But
- 5:00Speaker 2: the start was not what you want to see. Some
- 5:03Speaker 2: of the things that procedurally happened and whatnot, you don't
- 5:06Speaker 2: want to see that. So I think you'll see Nebraska
- 5:09Speaker 2: come out pretty motivated to play. And the night crowd
- 5:14Speaker 2: really does get you fired up. I think for a
- 5:17Speaker 2: lot of these guys that are playing their first game, Calandria,
- 5:20Speaker 2: Jamal Rule, a night game atmosphere, you're going to see
- 5:24Speaker 2: a lot of guys come out ready to go.
