- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37As we look at this book, Revelation, it is completely
- 0:40different pretty much than any other book in the Scriptures.
- 0:43A matter of fact, there was a lot of controversy in the early
- 0:46church as to whether it should be part of the Canon.
- 0:49Now, the apostles, obviously they're the forerunners of the
- 0:53church, and what they were given is what we have today in our
- 0:56Scriptures. But there was a lot of confusion
- 0:59back then because of the inability to even begin to
- 1:02comprehend in the slightest way what this book was saying it
- 1:05that. I love spring cleaning.
- 1:08It provides opportunities for reorganization, for getting rid
- 1:12of excess clutter that I've held on to.
- 1:15And occasionally I'll rediscover some lost thing that I'd
- 1:19forgotten about. But sometimes I'll come across
- 1:22something that I'm not quite sure what to do with.
- 1:26The church at one point felt similarly about the Book of
- 1:29Revelation. Unsure if they should even keep
- 1:32it in the Bible today, Pastor Clark helps to unpack some of
- 1:36the true intent and purpose of this amazing book.
- 1:40Now here's Pastor Clark in Revelation chapter one with
- 1:43today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:47You just can't arbitrarily take what's in this book and try to
- 1:51make everything literal, because not everything is revealed yet.
- 1:54We're still waiting for some of these things to develop in the
- 1:57future. And there's an old term in
- 1:59seminaries in Bible college called hermeneutics.
- 2:03And hermeneutics is a study of how to interpret Scripture.
- 2:06And it says, when the plain sense of Scripture makes common
- 2:09sense, seek no other sense. But take every word at its
- 2:12literal meaning. Unless studied in the light of
- 2:14related passages, something else is indicated wise.
- 2:18And so when we look at this, we're going to look at it in
- 2:22regard to the related passages. But as we think about some of
- 2:27the things that John was going to be writing about, a lot of
- 2:30these symbols that he's speaking about really relate to personal
- 2:35and national entities at that time that they were living and
- 2:39what would eventually develop in the future.
- 2:41Many of these leaders are portrayed as animals.
- 2:44We see the symbolism of the Lamb and it refers to our Savior,
- 2:47Jesus Christ, the Lamb who was slain before the foundation of
- 2:51the earth. The dragon is referred, Satan
- 2:53himself and the beast, the demonic spirits and the mutant
- 2:57locusts, all these things that we'll read in time.
- 2:59He also discusses cities and they're depicted as harlots and
- 3:03a bride. And we look at Babylon and Sodom
- 3:06and Egypt and Jerusalem and in the context of those kind of
- 3:09things also at that time, as he looks at the symbols that he's
- 3:13been given, they represent political upheaval that will
- 3:17eventually occur and also terms of cosmic disruptions.
- 3:21We read in Matthew about the sun and moon, and also in Revelation
- 3:24being darkened, the stars falling, every island, the
- 3:27mountain disappeering. Also, the number 7 is used
- 3:30throughout this book and #7 refers to completeness and
- 3:34perfection in the Scriptures and throughout the Scripture,
- 3:38Deuteronomy, Psalms and Proverbs.
- 3:40This numbers used many, many times.
- 3:42In the Book of Revelation. This number is used to refer to
- 3:45the seven churches, the seven seals, the seven trumpets, the
- 3:48seven bowls, the seven thunders, and the seven beatitudes.
- 3:52There are beatitudes in the Book of Revelation and the first one
- 3:55we read the day about. Those who read this book are
- 3:58blessed, those who hear the words of the prophecy are
- 4:00blessed, and those who keep those things which are written
- 4:03in it. But the time is near.
- 4:05That's the first beatitude of the seven in the Book of
- 4:09Revelation. There's also fractions and
- 4:11numbers given like 1/3 multiples of 12, like the 24 elders before
- 4:16the throne and 144,000 witnesses during the time of the
- 4:20tribulation, the thousand year reign. 10 days, one hour, a
- 4:24little while he uses all these times.
- 4:27As we look at this book, Revelation, it is completely
- 4:30different pretty much than any other book in the Scriptures.
- 4:33Matter of fact, there was a lot of controversy in the early
- 4:36church as to whether it should be part of the Canon.
- 4:38Now, the apostles, obviously they're the forerunners of the
- 4:42church, and what they were given is what we have today in our
- 4:46Scriptures. But there was a lot of confusion
- 4:48back then because of the inability to even begin to
- 4:52comprehend in the slightest way what this book was saying at
- 4:55that time. But it is truly inspired by God
- 4:58as a prophecy. It identifies very clearly to us
- 5:02the name of its true author. It actually predicts the future,
- 5:06and it's an epistle in the apocalyptic mode that predicts
- 5:10events of the future under the inspiration of God, the Holy
- 5:14Spirit. Now, the reign of this emperor,
- 5:19the mission, he was a very, very terrible, mean ruler.
- 5:24He wanted to persecute the whole region, and Nero just had the
- 5:28ability to affect Rome at the time.
- 5:30But as the church grew, this man who was in charge, the emperor
- 5:34at the time, had the ability to deal with the whole area and try
- 5:38to destroy everybody that lived at that time.
- 5:41We study in history that Nicodemus was one of those who
- 5:44were martyred during this time of this reign of this evil
- 5:47emperor. Also Timothy.
- 5:49Timothy was out in the streets speaking against the ungodly
- 5:53role this leader and the things that were happening and the
- 5:55people came upon him and clubbed him and physically beat him in a
- 5:59couple days after his beating he he died.
- 6:01It's taught that John the Apostle was boiled in oil before
- 6:06he was sent an eggs out to this Isle of Patmos.
- 6:09And so he, as he said in verse 9, I'm your brother and
- 6:12companion in the Tribulation. He was experiencing the horror.
- 6:16And so as we look at these churches, they were all at
- 6:19different levels in their spiritual foundation as to how
- 6:23they were following Jesus Christ.
- 6:26As we study the book, you'll see there's a lot of allusion to
- 6:29other parts of the Bible, but there's not one quote from
- 6:32another book clearly defined in the Book of Revelation.
- 6:36There's imagery from hundreds of Old Testament passages, though
- 6:40it gives a symbol of 2 olive trees referring to the two
- 6:43witnesses in Chapter 11. It echoes Zechariah 43, 11
- 6:48through 14, referring to Zerubbabel and Joshua.
- 6:52There's hundreds of allusions to familiar images in the Old
- 6:54Testament from the book of Isaiah alone. 79 times alluded
- 6:58references Daniel 53 times Ezekiel 48 Psalms 43 times
- 7:03Exodus 27 times Jeremiah 22 Zechariah 15, Amos 9, Joel 8.
- 7:09The Old Testament was the foundation of what the apostles
- 7:13taught from. They didn't have everything like
- 7:16you and I have now, so everything they drew upon was
- 7:19the Old Testament scriptures. It also gives us the insights of
- 7:24the matrix that are set up in the book.
- 7:27Like for example it gives the illustration of the Babylonian
- 7:31exile and Exodus and also comparing it to the life of
- 7:35Jesus. We see an evil power in the book
- 7:37of Exodus persecuting God's people, Pharaoh in Egypt, but we
- 7:41see an evil power persecuting God's people in the Book of
- 7:44Revelation, the Antichrist. We see plagues of darkness and
- 7:48hail and locusts and boils and frogs and water and turn into
- 7:51blood in the book of Exodus. We also see this revealed in the
- 7:55Book of Revelation. It talks about being delivered
- 7:58by the blood of the lamb in the Old Testament.
- 8:00In the book of Exodus when the blood was put on the doorpost
- 8:03and the Angel of God spoke to the children of Israel, saying
- 8:06when God sees the blood, he will pass over that house that the
- 8:10blood is applied to and they will not lose the life of the
- 8:13first born. But we also see in Revelation
- 8:16and that we are delivered by the blood of Jesus Christ talks
- 8:19about the dragon, referring to the dragon in the Angel, the
- 8:23demonic forces of the devil in the Book of Revelation.
- 8:26Also in Ezekiel 29, three talks about the crossing of the Red
- 8:30Sea where they sang the song of Moses and they're redeemed will
- 8:34sing in the Book of Revelation the song of Moses and the Lamb.
- 8:38In Revelation 15, it also discusses the Tabernacle and all
- 8:42its furnishings in the book of Hebrews, it discusses that the
- 8:45earthly Tabernacle is a model of the heavenly counterpart.
- 8:50A matter of fact, when you want to learn about worship, and I
- 8:54think we all have a lot more to learn about worship.
- 8:57Even though we worship the Lord here in spirit and truth and we
- 9:00lift our hearts up to God. We're only we got a glimpse, a
- 9:03minor glimpse of what it's going to be like to worship in the
- 9:06Kingdom of heaven. But if you really want to see
- 9:08pure, divine, holy God centered in God ordained worship, you
- 9:15read the worship in the Book of Revelation.
- 9:17John describes the atmosphere, golden lampstands that are
- 9:21present in chapter 1 verse 12. Hidden man associated with the
- 9:25Ark of the Covenant in chapter 2 verse 17, the altar of incense
- 9:29chapter 8 verse 3 through 5, the Holy of Holies in Chapter 11
- 9:34verse one and 15 verse 8, and the Ark of the Covenant in
- 9:38Chapter 11 verse 19. We think about the birth of
- 9:42Christ and the death and the burial and the resurrection and
- 9:47his victory over Satan. A reference frequently in this
- 9:51book because it's all about Christ.
- 9:54His birth and ascension is depicted in chapter 12, verse 5.
- 9:58What's fascinating is when they talk about the two witnesses
- 10:02that will be on the earth during the time of the Tribulation,
- 10:05proclaiming the Kingdom of God and the coming of Christ.
- 10:08They mirror Christ's earthly ministry almost identically.
- 10:12Their ministry lasted 3 1/2 years.
- 10:15Christ's earthly ministry after the baptism was 3 1/2 years.
- 10:19Revelation 11/3 speaks of these two witnesses.
- 10:22We believe they are Elijah and Enoch.
- 10:25Some people believe Elijah and Moses, but Elijah and Enoch,
- 10:29those two were the ones that never tasted physical death.
- 10:32They were slain where Christ died, in Jerusalem, in the
- 10:35streets there in Revelation 11/8.
- 10:38After three days they resurrect from the dead in the sin in
- 10:42Chapter 11 verse 11 through 12. So a literal return of Christ at
- 10:47the end of the age is what we're looking at here and what we're
- 10:50preparing for as we study this, all four approaches and when we
- 10:54think about their views and how they look at things, in essence
- 10:57anticipate this except for the full preterist view.
- 11:00Now, one of the controversies in this book is the millennial
- 11:04Kingdom. People usually don't argue about
- 11:06what 666 means or who these two witnesses are with timing of the
- 11:11rapture. That's usually not the issue
- 11:12that divides the body of Christ. It's always surrounding this
- 11:15issue of a millennial Kingdom. Is it a figurative Kingdom?
- 11:19Is it a symbolic Kingdom? Or is it a literal 1000
- 11:22millennial reign? We believe it is a literal 1000
- 11:25millennial Kingdom. But even in the 2nd century, as
- 11:29I said earlier when they were debating some of these things
- 11:31and these centuries were closest to the days of the apostles,
- 11:35what's the meaning of this thousand year reign?
- 11:39Revelation 20 is probably the most debated and argued chapter
- 11:43in the Bible and this chapter mentions 1000 year reign of the
- 11:48Saints with Christ. Now there's 3 views of the
- 11:50Millennium. The first view is
- 11:53premillennialism. That's what we are.
- 11:55We are a premillennial pre Trib Bible believing church.
- 11:59We believe in a literal 1000 year reign of Christ on earth
- 12:04after his second coming. We believe that Christ will come
- 12:08to take his church one of this earth prior to the days of the
- 12:12wrath of God being poured out upon the earth.
- 12:14So we are pre Trib. We believe we will not be in
- 12:17this tribulation that will eventually come upon the earth
- 12:20and there's verses to support that.
- 12:22Like God has not appointed his bride to wrath.
- 12:26We'll get into that stuff from Thessalonians down the road, but
- 12:29the millennial Kingdom will be a time of international peace and
- 12:32justice. Christ will roll with an iron
- 12:35hand. The greatest ruler of all time
- 12:37will come and establish his reign on the earth at the end of
- 12:40that 1000 year period. There will be one last battle
- 12:43when Satan is released before the final judgment is poured
- 12:47out. Now there's 2 views of this pre
- 12:49millennial situation. You have the historic pre
- 12:53millennial view and the dispensational pre millennial
- 12:56view. We study the church fathers and
- 12:58it goes way back in time where the majority of the church
- 13:02fathers, those who were second to the apostles and some of them
- 13:06were ordained by the apostles. They believed in a historic pre
- 13:11millennial view. The dispensational pre
- 13:13millennial view view is an interesting perspective.
- 13:16And some of these things have become more alive actually in
- 13:19the 18th century, but they sort of brought together a lot of
- 13:23things that weren't really clear in earlier years.
- 13:26And I believe that as time goes on, as we have more Bible tools
- 13:30to study the scriptures, as we have more voices down through
- 13:33the history of time, a lot of the homework has been done for
- 13:36us already, which is a blessing. You get good commentaries and
- 13:39you get good scholars and you lay the stuff out and you you're
- 13:41able to then look at this whole thing and a very objective
- 13:44manner. Dispensational premillennial
- 13:47view. It differs from historic
- 13:48premillennial view and that it has an emphasis on the
- 13:51continuing centrality of the nation of Israel in God's end
- 13:55time plan and anticipates a rapture of Christians to heaven
- 13:59before the beginning of the tribulation.
- 14:01We would be in that camp. We believe that Israel is very,
- 14:06very important to the final combination of God's plan on the
- 14:09earth. People who would not have a
- 14:11historical pre mill view, people who would be all millennial
- 14:14would look at the church today as being the fulfillment of
- 14:18Israel and that the church in the New Testament is the
- 14:22revelation of what God had always intended because Israel
- 14:25had rejected Christ. But we know and Revelation 910
- 14:28and 11, Paul says, has God finished with Israel?
- 14:31No, he still has a plan for them.
- 14:34And we know that whenever Christ comes, it says every eye will
- 14:38see him. Well, how is that possible?
- 14:39Now we have satellites and we have GPSI mean everything is
- 14:43happening on the earth can be seen simultaneously by the whole
- 14:46world. And the Bible says that they
- 14:48will look up and see him whom they appears.
- 14:50And many people will we get saved and be born again at the
- 14:54second coming of Christ, referring to the many of those,
- 14:57the Jewish descent that will come and believe in him.
- 15:01So we believe these things. And as we go through the
- 15:04Scripture, I want to sort of give you the view that we have,
- 15:08but at the same time help you to understand why people have some
- 15:11other views so that you might have some friends.
- 15:13When you talk about these things, you're not ignorant.
- 15:15You understand why people have some various views and maybe
- 15:19make you a little stronger in regard to your own personal
- 15:21convictions about these things. Now the post millennial view,
- 15:24this is considered eschatology of hope and what they view is
- 15:28that Christ comes after the thousand year period.
- 15:30That's when his second coming occurs.
- 15:32The Kingdom is established by evangelism on earth.
- 15:35So in other words, all of us have such a great influence,
- 15:38impact on the world that the world begins to become Christian
- 15:41and not Pagan. Most people will become
- 15:43Christians prior to the thousand year reign of peace, before
- 15:47Christ returns and His second coming.
- 15:49And so they see the disasters of the past and also the things
- 15:54that are written in Revelation. They're more preterists in their
- 15:57view that all those things happened already.
- 16:00Well, I don't know about you guys, but I've been living on
- 16:02the face of the earth for 58 years.
- 16:04I don't see things getting better.
- 16:07I wish they would, but they're getting worse.
- 16:11And the Bible declares throughout the Scriptures that
- 16:14the things are going to get worse.
- 16:16That doesn't keep us from sharing our faith, bringing hope
- 16:19to people and seeing people's lives change because of the
- 16:22Gospel, right? We just don't give up and say
- 16:24there's nothing we can do. Things are going no, we have to
- 16:27have faith and believe because it could be another year, could
- 16:30be 1000 years before these things come to pass.
- 16:32But I sense that they're much closer than they've ever been
- 16:36before. Then this all millennial view,
- 16:39and this is a view of your Catholics and your Orthodox,
- 16:42your Anglican, some Presbyterians, some Lutheran's.
- 16:45This view is that the thousand year reign is symbolic, it's
- 16:49just a long period of time from Christ's initial coming to His
- 16:53second coming. They believe that the binding of
- 16:55Satan happened spiritually at the cross at the reign of the
- 16:58Saints is in the present age, and the loosing of Satan is a
- 17:02final period of deception coming on the world at the end of the
- 17:04age. They believe the second coming
- 17:06is what relates to revelation when it says fire from heaven
- 17:10that devours the wicked is the second coming.
- 17:12This is a view of Augustine and many of the reformers, but the
- 17:17early church fathers. And I've studied a lot of this
- 17:19stuff because I'm curious about it and why do people have the
- 17:21views that they have? And you go back and you'll find
- 17:25that many of those early church fathers were premillennial.
- 17:28They believed in a literal 1000 year reign and as we study this
- 17:32book, you'll, I believe, come to some of those same conclusions.
- 17:35What influenced the amillennial view were the Greek and Roman
- 17:40influences. They call it the Alexandrian
- 17:42philosophy at the time. And so that's why a lot of
- 17:44people began to receive or accept the amillennial view.
- 17:49I hope some of that help. But let's look at chapter 1
- 17:51again and verse 1, the introduction of 1st 8 verses.
- 17:54We're just going to look at a few of the verses this morning.
- 17:579 through 20 talks about the vision of the risen, glorified
- 18:00Christ, the Lord of the church. Verse 1, the revelation of Jesus
- 18:05Christ which God gave Him to show His servants things which
- 18:09must shortly take place. God's intention all the time for
- 18:13His people is to be alert and aware of what is on the horizon.
- 18:19He does not leave us ignorant. The reason people are ignorant
- 18:22today is that they don't study the scriptures.
- 18:24They don't listen to the scriptures.
- 18:26That's why people have so many wild and crazy ideas.
- 18:30But God's intention through the apostle John, given this
- 18:34revelation by the angels of God and by Christ himself, was that
- 18:39we might understand the things that will occur at the end of
- 18:43time. Now he says that these things
- 18:45will shortly take place. You might say, well, he wrote
- 18:49this over 2000 years ago. It doesn't seem like it's too
- 18:51short, you know, seems like it's a long time.
- 18:54Well, Peter tells us, especially in regard to the end of time,
- 18:57that one day with the Lord is like 1000 years and 1000 years
- 19:01is only one day. So we got 2000 years that have
- 19:05passed. And God's time, what we call
- 19:09Kairos, is 2 days. Earth time is chronological
- 19:15chronos, God's time is Kairos. And as a result, there has been
- 19:22little time that has gone by. From the perspective of the one
- 19:26that sits on the throne. The time is at hand and it's
- 19:30imminent. The Cairo's focus of God's
- 19:33timing is the expectation that Christ can return at any moment.
- 19:38And that's how the apostles live, and that's how we're to
- 19:40live. Jesus himself said, look up.
- 19:43Even when he was on earth, he said, your redemption draws
- 19:46nigh. And so John bears record of
- 19:49these things. He saw and he heard, and Jesus
- 19:51revealed these things to him. John saw it and he recorded
- 19:54these things without air, that Christ would be revealed for our
- 19:59benefit. And so he sent and signified by
- 20:02his Angel to his servant John, who bore witness or bear record
- 20:06to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ.
- 20:10All the things he saw blessed. Is he who reads and those who
- 20:16hear the words of this prophecy. I've talked to some people and
- 20:19they say, oh, I don't like Revelation.
- 20:20I'm confused or I think it's boring.
- 20:23How can anybody think this is boring?
- 20:24This is like the most exciting book they could read on the face
- 20:27of the earth. But people don't like reading it
- 20:30because it causes anxiety for some folks, which it should if
- 20:35you aren't a follower of Jesus Christ.
- 20:37But it's a blessing for us today.
- 20:39Even just the fact that if I did nothing else today, guys, and I
- 20:42just read this book to you and you listen to it and we live
- 20:46these things out. The blessings are promised by
- 20:48God. We're blessed whenever we read
- 20:52the whole Bible. But there's a specific blessing
- 20:55in regards to reading this book and to do this thing that it
- 20:59says. Now in the early church, they
- 21:02didn't have the Bible like this. So when the church gathered and
- 21:04they didn't gather in buildings, they gathered in homes, the
- 21:07teacher would read what was in the letters wasn't a bound book
- 21:12like this. It was pages.
- 21:14And the people didn't have this to look at.
- 21:16We're so blessed. You guys can pull out of the Pew
- 21:18or your own Bibles today and follow along.
- 21:21But back then, the people listened to the person who was
- 21:25reading it. One person would read this
- 21:27epistle while the others listened.
- 21:29And there was again, I said, promise blessings.
- 21:32So as we study this book in the days ahead, the most exciting
- 21:35thing for each of us. And I get discouraged sometimes
- 21:38when I see the things that are going on in the world and the
- 21:41government and the heartache and the horror and tribulation and
- 21:45the insanity of the economic system.
- 21:47Everything seems very unstable to me in these days, very
- 21:51uncertain. But one thing I do know for sure
- 21:54is that God's on the throne and that nothing is out of control
- 21:58because He's sovereign. Everything is coming along
- 22:01according to His plan. And the final triumph of God
- 22:05over sin and of Satan and the final safety of the believer in
- 22:09the Kingdom one day is 100% assured by the things that are
- 22:13taught in this particular book. As we study this book, we focus
- 22:17on one all the allegories assembles, the fascinating
- 22:21events, the judgments, all the focus on futuristic events.
- 22:26All well and good exciting, but this is what we focus on.
- 22:30The him who loved us, Jesus, the one who washed us from our sins
- 22:34in his own blood. That's the most important thing
- 22:38and has made us kings and priests to his God and Father,
- 22:42to him be glory and dominion forever and ever, all men.
- 22:48So today I look at you as students of God's Word, but I
- 22:54must also see you as kings and priests here today, as you would
- 22:57see me that way. We have been given a royal
- 23:01privilege to be called not only the sons and daughters of God,
- 23:07but to be called priests and kings.
- 23:10I don't have a big empire. You don't either.
- 23:13But He has the empire that extends throughout all the
- 23:18universe, and He's chosen you to be a priest and a king within
- 23:23His Kingdom. So as we look at what's going on
- 23:26today and the struggles and the difficulties, the best is yet to
- 23:29come, isn't it? For those of us who know Christ
- 23:31and are called according to His purposes.
- 23:34So I encourage you to read ahead.
- 23:35We're going to go slow through this book.
- 23:37We'll be working through this first chapter in the weeks to
- 23:40come. May the Lord open your heart.
- 23:42May He excite you about what He has planned to teach you through
- 23:45this, and may He cause the Person of Jesus Christ to become
- 23:49more real. I'm more alive to you than He's
- 23:52ever been before. That's my hope, my prayer for
- 23:54all of us. Thanks for being with us today
- 23:58here on Living Waters of Grace. We are in the Book of
- 24:01Revelation, and we find it fascinating how influential and
- 24:06involved the angels are in this book.
- 24:09They bring about whatever it is that God has instructed them to
- 24:13do, but it's through their actions that much of the
- 24:17judgements come on the earth. The angels are in submission to
- 24:20God as their authority, but He utilizes them in unique ways
- 24:25throughout this book. Like angels have a specific
- 24:28purpose from God, you have a unique purpose and plan to.
- 24:32God wants to use you in your life as a testimony to others
- 24:36and to bring others who are currently lost into the fold of
- 24:39God. God would love more than
- 24:42anything for all who are willing to come to Him for salvation.
- 24:46He wants it to be their choice, not a forced situation.
- 24:51This is the way God works, not forcing himself on anyone, but
- 24:55giving each person free will. If you're interested in learning
- 24:59about this choice that's free and that it's a gift, go to

- 25:14through what it means to be a follower of Jesus.
