Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Winston should know better
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So Winston Peters Winston Peter's escaped censure yesterday from the
- 0:05Speaker 1: speaker after his little outburst against a Green MP, who
- 0:08Speaker 1: let's face it, that green MP was a y happy
- 0:10Speaker 1: little interrupter in the house and he obviously got Winston's
- 0:12Speaker 1: goat in. Winston then led his mouth off, but his
- 0:16Speaker 1: escaped censer from the speaker. However, he's still being judged
- 0:19Speaker 1: in the court of public opinion. We had carmel Sepaloni
- 0:21Speaker 1: from Labor jumping up and down demanding he resigned or
- 0:24Speaker 1: be sacrigo, to go away, which is not going to happen.
- 0:26Speaker 1: He's just playing the politics. And then we had China
- 0:29Speaker 1: complaining to m Fat. You got to hand it to China.
- 0:32Speaker 1: They play a subtle ball. They know how to do
- 0:34Speaker 1: this sort of you know this, you know this conversation
- 0:38Speaker 1: between nations. They never mentioned Winston by name. They called
- 0:42Speaker 1: him a certain politician in their talks with m Fat
- 0:46Speaker 1: and on social media, and then the ambassador gave this
- 0:49Speaker 1: little zinger on the social media. The ambassador said about Winston,
- 0:52Speaker 1: sometimes a statement says more about the person than makes it,
- 0:57Speaker 1: That makes it than anything or anybody else. That was
- 1:02Speaker 1: subtle dig wasn't it. All of this did not deter Winston,
- 1:05Speaker 1: who doubled out and said he was defending democracy, which
- 1:07Speaker 1: is fine. As I said before, the Green MP was
- 1:09Speaker 1: being very interrupted in the House and you can do
- 1:12Speaker 1: that without that, you can actually defend democracy, though Winston,
- 1:15Speaker 1: without sounding like an ignorant, grumpy old man. And that's
- 1:19Speaker 1: what I think Winston should be most ashamed of. He
- 1:21Speaker 1: didn't have a clue about this MP. He didn't know
- 1:23Speaker 1: this MP has been in New Zealand's since he was eight,
- 1:27Speaker 1: that he's grown up in New Zealand, he's been educated
- 1:29Speaker 1: in New Zealand. He knows in New Zealand all over
- 1:30Speaker 1: the place. He doesn't want to go back to where
- 1:32Speaker 1: he came from because as far as he's concerned, he
- 1:34Speaker 1: comes from here. So that was just an ignorant dig
- 1:37Speaker 1: and it's up there with Paul Henry who asked for
- 1:41Speaker 1: a more New Zealand Governor General when the Governor General
- 1:43Speaker 1: he was talking about, Onion such Anan was born and
- 1:45Speaker 1: raised here, had the most amazing broad Kiwi accent and
- 1:48Speaker 1: had even been the president of Rugby League. You can't
- 1:50Speaker 1: get more New Zealand than that, Paul, And for both
- 1:53Speaker 1: of these men. All they did was look at the
- 1:54Speaker 1: color of the face and make a terrible assumption. And
- 1:58Speaker 1: there is a word for that which I'm not going
- 2:00Speaker 1: to use. And the thing is, they should have been
- 2:04Speaker 1: better prepped before they opened their big mouth and then
- 2:07Speaker 1: stuck their foot in it. For more from Early Edition
