- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to hunts rut Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White Tailed Woods and now
- 0:08Speaker 1: your host Spencer new Hearth. I'm Spencer new Heart and
- 0:16Speaker 1: this is Wired to hunts Rut Fresh Radio powered by
- 0:19Speaker 1: First Love. Welcome to Wired to hunts What Fresh Radio.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I am your host, Spencer new Hearth, and this week
- 0:42Speaker 1: I am joined by Mark Kenyon, but he is not
- 0:45Speaker 1: at his computer like he normally is. Why is that, Mark?
- 0:50Speaker 1: For very very good reason, Spencer's because I'm sitting in
- 0:54Speaker 1: a truck in Iowa, great White Tail state that I
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm here for rut Cation one, and it's very excited
- 1:05Speaker 1: about it. I like it. And this isn't just any
- 1:09Speaker 1: ordinary trip to Iowa though. You have a cameraman with you,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and in the morning, I'm gonna have a cameraman with me,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and so is Tony Peterson and so is claiming you
- 1:18Speaker 1: can talk about that, Mark, Yeah, yeah, man. We're kicking
- 1:22Speaker 1: off of a really cool project here. The four of
- 1:24Speaker 1: us are all hunting across the country. And I know
- 1:28Speaker 1: we tease this a little bit, I think last week,
- 1:30Speaker 1: but I'll read it again. The four of us are
- 1:32Speaker 1: all hunting this week. So November one through seven, four
- 1:36Speaker 1: different places across the country, and we will be telling
- 1:39Speaker 1: the story of that one week across our four storylines.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Our four experiences are diverse experiences, UM, and seeing what
- 1:47Speaker 1: the White Tail Rut can what it can give us.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Who knows? Who knows it's gonna happen. It's likely or
- 1:51Speaker 1: at least hopefully gonna be action packed. Uh, conditions look good,
- 1:55Speaker 1: at least from what I'm saying. I'm sure we'll talk
- 1:56Speaker 1: about that in a second, but but yeah, that's gonna
- 1:59Speaker 1: be getting filmed this week and then we will be
- 2:03Speaker 1: publishing that for the world to follow along with later
- 2:07Speaker 1: this month on the Meat Eater YouTube channel, So everyone
- 2:10Speaker 1: makes sure to stay tuned for that, make sure you
- 2:12Speaker 1: subscribed to the meta or YouTube channel to see how
- 2:16Speaker 1: this all goes down. So very very exciting and high hope.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So this week, that's right, first episode should be dropping
- 2:22Speaker 1: probably in like two or three weeks from now, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: I'm not certain what that date is, but by the
- 2:27Speaker 1: ann November, UM, the first episode or two of the
- 2:31Speaker 1: show is going to be out. UM. So we are
- 2:35Speaker 1: here though to talk about Buck movement, and it is
- 2:38Speaker 1: officially November. It is officially the rut for most of
- 2:42Speaker 1: the White Tales range. And I think Mark, there's something
- 2:45Speaker 1: that you do a good job of emphasizing when it
- 2:48Speaker 1: comes to hunting the rut, and that is that we
- 2:51Speaker 1: sort of think about this moment for like three sixty
- 2:54Speaker 1: five days a year, and then it gets here, and
- 2:56Speaker 1: maybe the ruts not happening like you expected it to,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and you can maybe overthink things and become pessimistic. Um
- 3:04Speaker 1: and and your rut isn't happening like a rut should.
- 3:08Speaker 1: In that case, I always hear you preach the kiss
- 3:11Speaker 1: method of hunting the rut. Go over that forest, Mark
- 3:14Speaker 1: what that means and why you think that's important for
- 3:16Speaker 1: hunting this time of year. Yeah. Yeah, I'm glad to
- 3:20Speaker 1: bring it up, Spencer, because it might be at least
- 3:22Speaker 1: at least for me, it might be the very most
- 3:25Speaker 1: important thing that I need to be reminded of every
- 3:27Speaker 1: single year come this time of year, because, like you mentioned,
- 3:31Speaker 1: we build up the rut so much, we have such
- 3:34Speaker 1: high expectations for it. There's so much written about the rut,
- 3:37Speaker 1: there's so much talked about when it comes to the rut.
- 3:39Speaker 1: There's so many shows about the rut. You know, there's
- 3:41Speaker 1: a million different ways your mind could go when you're
- 3:44Speaker 1: thinking about how the rut should be and how you
- 3:47Speaker 1: should be hunting during the rut, and what you should
- 3:49Speaker 1: be seeing and what you should be experiencing it. YadA, YadA,
- 3:52Speaker 1: YadA YadA. Like you said, you can get confused, you
- 3:54Speaker 1: can get paralyzed, you can get frustrated. Whenever I feel
- 3:58Speaker 1: any inkling of that, whenever I feel lost or don't
- 4:01Speaker 1: know what to do, or I don't know why things
- 4:03Speaker 1: aren't going the way they should be, I just remind myself,
- 4:05Speaker 1: like you mentioned, to keep it simple and to focus
- 4:08Speaker 1: on two step back and look at the foundations that
- 4:12Speaker 1: the pillars of hunting the rut, and those two pillars
- 4:15Speaker 1: for me are number one does. Focus on the does.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Whenever you're lost or stuck in the rut, go back
- 4:23Speaker 1: to that where the does. Where do the does spend
- 4:26Speaker 1: the most of their time? So that's doe betting areas typically,
- 4:29Speaker 1: or that's doughe feeding areas, And if you don't order
- 4:33Speaker 1: to start, that is a really really good place to
- 4:35Speaker 1: point to. So number one of the pillars of rhuting
- 4:39Speaker 1: success is no where the does aren't be there because
- 4:41Speaker 1: that's where the bucks want to be right now, bucks
- 4:44Speaker 1: are trying to find females that are ready to breed.
- 4:46Speaker 1: If you know where the does are, you know where
- 4:48Speaker 1: the bucks are going to be. That right there can
- 4:51Speaker 1: be the simplest solution to whole lot of problems. The
- 4:54Speaker 1: second thing I would like to focus on, the second foundation.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Second pillar, is any kind of travel corridor, funnel or
- 5:01Speaker 1: pinch point that focuses and tightens down dear movement, because again,
- 5:08Speaker 1: bucks are traveling a lot more than usual to try
- 5:10Speaker 1: to find those doughs. So they're trying to get from
- 5:12Speaker 1: Doe hot spot to do hot spot to do hot spot.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Anywhere the terrain or habitat or some kind of feature
- 5:19Speaker 1: constricts movement into a narrower than usual way, that's going
- 5:24Speaker 1: to be a good place during the rut. So two
- 5:26Speaker 1: things right there. If ever you're lost, look for one
- 5:29Speaker 1: of those two things. Or in a perfect world, if
- 5:31Speaker 1: you can get those two things combined, you really have
- 5:33Speaker 1: a dynamite ruts up. If you can be in a
- 5:36Speaker 1: pinch point that's maybe downwind of dough betting area, holy smoke,
- 5:39Speaker 1: sits your butt down there and just wait because good
- 5:42Speaker 1: things are coming. And and that's that's an oversimplifies view
- 5:46Speaker 1: of the rut, of course, but oftentimes you need to
- 5:49Speaker 1: just focus on the simple basis of things to get
- 5:52Speaker 1: your head right again, to get your recentered on the
- 5:55Speaker 1: right places to be. Because sometimes if you get too
- 5:57Speaker 1: much into the weeds, you get you just get bogged
- 6:00Speaker 1: down in it. So I like to do that. I
- 6:02Speaker 1: like to take a step back, keep it simple. Make
- 6:04Speaker 1: sure that any decision I'm making, any you know, should
- 6:07Speaker 1: I hunt this true or that true? Should I hunt
- 6:09Speaker 1: this spot of this spot? It's got to pass the test.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Does it fulfill one of those two pillars? Does it
- 6:15Speaker 1: check the box from one of those two things or
- 6:18Speaker 1: both of those two things. If it doesn't, then what
- 6:20Speaker 1: the heck am I doing there? It's oftentimes me getting
- 6:23Speaker 1: too fancy. You're trying to think I'm smarter than I am.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So so that right there, I think is is a
- 6:27Speaker 1: good thing for everyone to keep in mind over the
- 6:29Speaker 1: next couple of weeks. If you're ever feeling lost, fall
- 6:32Speaker 1: back on the foundations. Yeah. And if I were to
- 6:34Speaker 1: add a third pillar to this, I think that would
- 6:37Speaker 1: be just being in the woods, simply being out there.
- 6:40Speaker 1: It can be easy this time of year. If like
- 6:43Speaker 1: November one through five, it isn't happening for you. It
- 6:46Speaker 1: can be easy to talk yourself out of a haunt,
- 6:48Speaker 1: saying that the weather isn't right, or the moon isn't right,
- 6:52Speaker 1: or your trail cameras have gone cold or something like that.
- 6:55Speaker 1: But the realities these next two weeks are the best
- 6:57Speaker 1: two weeks of hunting for most of the country. Um
- 7:01Speaker 1: And you can't like get those days back when it's
- 7:04Speaker 1: all of a sudden December, and so be in the
- 7:07Speaker 1: woods as much as you possibly can for these next
- 7:09Speaker 1: couple of weeks. Um. And you do that, combined with
- 7:12Speaker 1: being around doughes and being around pinch points, good things
- 7:15Speaker 1: are gonna happen, for sure. Yeah, I agree, and and
- 7:19Speaker 1: thankfully this week we actually got pretty good conditions across
- 7:23Speaker 1: a lot of parts of the country at least, so
- 7:25Speaker 1: there's no excuse not to be in the wood. There's
- 7:27Speaker 1: no warm front like last year. There's nothing to complain about.
- 7:31Speaker 1: It's just good, good, good good. That's right. And the
- 7:34Speaker 1: hunters that you're gonna hear from this week giving you
- 7:36Speaker 1: your report or Josh Honeycutt from Real Tree in Kentucky,
- 7:39Speaker 1: Mike hun Sucker in Colorado, from Heartland bow Hunter, Alex
- 7:42Speaker 1: Comstock from whitetail DNA in Minnesota, and Clay Newcombe from
- 7:46Speaker 1: media during bear grease in Arkansas. And you're reading materials
- 7:50Speaker 1: this week, um. The first article is three Unconventional white
- 7:53Speaker 1: tailed rott hunting Tactics from Dylan Trump. Dylan introduces three
- 7:57Speaker 1: unorthodox tactics to implement for when you're rott haunts have
- 8:00Speaker 1: been very slow. How to Hunt the white tail rout
- 8:03Speaker 1: in Big Woods by Bou Martonic Bow goes over the
- 8:06Speaker 1: nuances of hunting big timber in November, which is his expertise.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And then what is the best day of the white
- 8:12Speaker 1: tail Rut? By me I interviewed ten big buck killers
- 8:15Speaker 1: and asked them for their favorite day of the rut
- 8:17Speaker 1: and there was a pretty consistent answer, which you can
- 8:20Speaker 1: get in that article. And then the last thing, which
- 8:22Speaker 1: is sort of what you just previewed, Mark, is the
- 8:24Speaker 1: Rules of the white Tail Rout an article that you
- 8:27Speaker 1: wrote where Mark goes over his kiss strategy and what
- 8:30Speaker 1: the four rules are that every white tailor should be
- 8:32Speaker 1: following this time of year. Spencer, what's your prediction for
- 8:37Speaker 1: the next seven weeks or seven days? Do you expect
- 8:43Speaker 1: a one through ten or what do you expect on
- 8:45Speaker 1: the one through ten rating? And what I was trying
- 8:47Speaker 1: to say there a second ago, do you expect one
- 8:50Speaker 1: tag failed? Two tags failed? What are you gonna put
- 8:53Speaker 1: down the ground this week? These next ten days, you're
- 8:55Speaker 1: gonna be a ten out of ten if if you
- 8:57Speaker 1: are anywhere that has a traditional white tail routs and
- 9:01Speaker 1: not in like the very deep South or something like that.
- 9:05Speaker 1: This is it. This, This is the ten out of ten.
- 9:07Speaker 1: It doesn't matter what the weather is doing, what the
- 9:09Speaker 1: moon's doing, stuff like that. Um, this is the best
- 9:12Speaker 1: going to get for my personal hunting. I'm gonna be optimistic.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna fill two tags between now and
- 9:18Speaker 1: the next time we record a Rout Fresh radio episode.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And uh, that podcast is gonna be real long because
- 9:25Speaker 1: because I'm gonna have a lot to talk about when
- 9:27Speaker 1: I come in with two less tags than now. Oh man,
- 9:32Speaker 1: you heard it here, Lazy Venture was gonna kill a
- 9:34Speaker 1: big old stinking buck in Montana and a big one
- 9:37Speaker 1: in Wyoming. Right, that's right, And you're gonna have one
- 9:40Speaker 1: in Iowa, an Tony's gonna have one in Wisconsin. H
- 9:44Speaker 1: Clay's gonna have one in Arkansas. Everyone's gonna have a
- 9:46Speaker 1: deer on the ground. Oh man, knock on wood, buddy.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I sure hope you don't come back to this one
- 9:50Speaker 1: next week and we all have nothing tagged. I know,
- 9:53Speaker 1: I know, all right, Mark, I will talk to you
- 9:55Speaker 1: next week. Sounds good, buddy, Good luck all right? And
- 10:00Speaker 1: joining us online first is Josh Honeycutt from Real Tree
- 10:03Speaker 1: in Kentucky. Now, Josh in Kentucky, what would you say
- 10:06Speaker 1: the bucket activity has been lately on a scale of
- 10:08Speaker 1: one to ten. Yeah, I mean for the past few days,
- 10:13Speaker 1: it's probably been a six and a half, maybe a seven. Um,
- 10:16Speaker 1: it was a little bit better at the end of
- 10:18Speaker 1: last week. Um. It kind of tapered off a little
- 10:20Speaker 1: bit this weekend, but uh yeah, I think that was
- 10:23Speaker 1: mostly weather related. What are you seeing for signmaking right
- 10:26Speaker 1: now in Kentucky. Yeah, rubs and scrapes are popping up
- 10:31Speaker 1: pretty rapidly, which is normal. It's time of year, um
- 10:35Speaker 1: for it. It's not it's not a peaks on yet,
- 10:37Speaker 1: but I'd say I'll probably get peaks on here within
- 10:40Speaker 1: the next few days in early November. Where do you
- 10:42Speaker 1: want to be running your trail cameras? As we approached
- 10:45Speaker 1: the rut. Yeah, I mean this time of year right now,
- 10:49Speaker 1: I still like those on the scrapes, but not for
- 10:52Speaker 1: much longer. That's that's fixing the change, you know. At
- 10:54Speaker 1: that point, I kind of like to have them on
- 10:55Speaker 1: pitch points, um, along trails that are on the downward
- 10:59Speaker 1: sides of of betting areas. Uh. But really anything that
- 11:03Speaker 1: just pinches deer down, um, because like the bucks are
- 11:06Speaker 1: gonna be traveling, uh from one spot to the next,
- 11:09Speaker 1: and they're gonna use the paths of least resistance so
- 11:12Speaker 1: long as the hunting pressure isn't preventing them from doing that.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So right now, I'm still like them on scrapes, probably
- 11:17Speaker 1: up until around November four, uh, and then that will
- 11:21Speaker 1: change to pinchpoints afterwards. This time of year in Kentucky,
- 11:25Speaker 1: are you doing any calling or decoying? Yeah, I haven't
- 11:29Speaker 1: done any newcoin yet, um, but that's gonna you know,
- 11:32Speaker 1: I've already filled my Kentucky buck tax. So I'm I'm
- 11:34Speaker 1: still in the Kentucky woods hunting with other or something.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I know what's what's happening out there. But I'll be
- 11:38Speaker 1: spending my time in Ohio and Indiana, um and and
- 11:42Speaker 1: I'll be doing a lot of calling and rattling as
- 11:43Speaker 1: well as some decoying there. What is a decoy set
- 11:46Speaker 1: up look like for you in Kentucky in early November
- 11:49Speaker 1: using a buck? Are you using a dough? Um? What
- 11:52Speaker 1: kind of area are you in? What's the posture of
- 11:54Speaker 1: the deer? I've never used a dough decoy, uh, I
- 11:58Speaker 1: know a lot of people have success with that. UM.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Almost always use a buck decoy. I like it set
- 12:04Speaker 1: up about probably about fifteen to twenty yards um. Some
- 12:08Speaker 1: people like to have a little closer, a little farther,
- 12:10Speaker 1: but I like it a fifteen to twenty that way.
- 12:11Speaker 1: If they hang up about ten yards past, if they're
- 12:14Speaker 1: still in in good range, you know, and uh, you know,
- 12:17Speaker 1: if they come in closer than that, I don't like
- 12:19Speaker 1: to have it ten That's just a little close for me,
- 12:22Speaker 1: especially if you're since falling or something like that, or
- 12:25Speaker 1: you have a little a little bit of a rogue,
- 12:27Speaker 1: uh win. But I like it about fifteen eighteen twenty
- 12:31Speaker 1: yards quartering slightly to me that way up a major deal. Generally,
- 12:35Speaker 1: if they approach that buck decoy, they're gonna approach your
- 12:37Speaker 1: head on. So that gives me either a broadside or
- 12:39Speaker 1: a quarter in a white shot in early November. Describe
- 12:43Speaker 1: your ideal set up when you're deer hunting in Kentucky. Yeah,
- 12:48Speaker 1: it depended on the situation. Every property is different, so
- 12:51Speaker 1: it's gonna be different from one from one property to
- 12:54Speaker 1: the next. But um, you know, from box hunting, I
- 12:57Speaker 1: like tight areas, pinch points where it condensed just your movement. Um,
- 13:01Speaker 1: come gun season, which are starts during the rut. I
- 13:04Speaker 1: like to be able to cover as much ground as possible, uh,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you know, to maximize the efficiency of the weapon you're using. Um,
- 13:11Speaker 1: that does come with a caveat though, you know, I
- 13:13Speaker 1: like to be in good quality betting cover as well.
- 13:15Speaker 1: So that's kind of an oxymoron there. But one of
- 13:18Speaker 1: the properties that I kind of crp so it's it's
- 13:21Speaker 1: bed and cover, but it's also if you get high
- 13:23Speaker 1: enough up in a tree, you can cover a lot
- 13:25Speaker 1: of grounds, so you have the best of both worlds.
- 13:27Speaker 1: So I like good thick, early successional brushy cover. Um,
- 13:32Speaker 1: but I like to also be able to see as
- 13:33Speaker 1: much ground as possible. But the you know, come gun season,
- 13:36Speaker 1: which starts this year in Kentucky around and I think
- 13:38Speaker 1: November those are gonna start locking down and they're gonna
- 13:41Speaker 1: be in cover. So that's what you need to be.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Whatever the best available bedding cover you have. Uh, that's
- 13:47Speaker 1: the spot. Historically in Kentucky, what's been your favorite day
- 13:51Speaker 1: of the rut? Yeah, I've never really had a favorite day.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I know a lot of people do. Um My, my
- 13:58Speaker 1: success has been kind of spread out. But the peak
- 14:01Speaker 1: breeding in Kentucky, he generally takes place November fifteen, dish
- 14:05Speaker 1: kind of around you know, maybe fifteen, sixteen seventeen, that's
- 14:08Speaker 1: kind of the average day. But the window is really
- 14:10Speaker 1: November tenth, twenty, and I really prefer the five days
- 14:14Speaker 1: that lead up to that. So I'd say, you know,
- 14:16Speaker 1: even though I don't have a favorite day, my favorite
- 14:19Speaker 1: window is probably November fifth to tenth going forward. Then
- 14:22Speaker 1: in the next week or so, what do you think
- 14:24Speaker 1: that bucket activity is going to be on a scale
- 14:26Speaker 1: of one to ten in Kentucky. Yeah, I think it's
- 14:30Speaker 1: gonna continually get better until around the tenth or so.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Um So it's only gonna gonna only improve from here
- 14:36Speaker 1: on out until about the tenth than you know, contray
- 14:40Speaker 1: to what people think. Every day in the woods doesn't
- 14:42Speaker 1: lock down at once, So you know, they talked about
- 14:44Speaker 1: the lockdown phase. It's more of a progression than than
- 14:48Speaker 1: a than a one day or two day events. So
- 14:51Speaker 1: not every dough in Buck's gonna be locked down simultaneously.
- 14:53Speaker 1: That's said. Whenever the bulk of the doz or an astress,
- 14:56Speaker 1: you're gonna see a little bit of a decrease in movement,
- 14:58Speaker 1: as people oftentimes uh suggest so uh, you know, I
- 15:02Speaker 1: think it's gonna improve up till around November tenth. Then
- 15:04Speaker 1: you'll see a little bit of a decline. But it's
- 15:07Speaker 1: still even though that's what people quote unquote says the lockdown,
- 15:10Speaker 1: it's still look very time to be in the woods.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Even though that's the case. You know, I think that
- 15:14Speaker 1: in November five to tenth, from time frame, you're gonna
- 15:17Speaker 1: see a ten. It'll probably drop down a little bit
- 15:20Speaker 1: after that, but yeah, I would say it'll be a
- 15:23Speaker 1: ten from November five to tenth, and probably from November
- 15:25Speaker 1: one to fifth it will probably be an eight or not.
- 15:28Speaker 1: All right, Josh, congrats on that great buck you killed
- 15:30Speaker 1: earlier this year in Kentucky. You good luck with the
- 15:32Speaker 1: rest of your fall, and thanks for joining me. Thank
- 15:35Speaker 1: you alright, and joining us on the line next is
- 15:38Speaker 1: Mike hun Sucker from Hartland bow Hunter in Colorado. Now,
- 15:42Speaker 1: Mike in Colorado, what would you say the bucket activity
- 15:44Speaker 1: has been lately? On a scale of one to ten, man,
- 15:47Speaker 1: I would say it's it's heating up. I would say
- 15:50Speaker 1: probably a seven right right about now. I've been hunting
- 15:53Speaker 1: the past week and it has been really slow for
- 15:55Speaker 1: the most part. And the switch seams really flipped just
- 15:59Speaker 1: a couple of days go. Um had a cold front
- 16:01Speaker 1: move in and Uh. The area that I hunt is
- 16:04Speaker 1: interesting because it's it's uh on the eastern plains and
- 16:07Speaker 1: so it gets cool in the evening. Um, it was
- 16:10Speaker 1: dipping down in the thirties, you know, and then but
- 16:12Speaker 1: it gets warm in the afternoon. So it was getting
- 16:14Speaker 1: up into the low eighties o our seventies, and so
- 16:17Speaker 1: a little bit of a cold front moved through and
- 16:19Speaker 1: that that seems to really just changed things. As far
- 16:21Speaker 1: as daylight movement, we were seeing plenty of doze uh
- 16:24Speaker 1: and small bucks and daylight, but finally, starting just a
- 16:26Speaker 1: few days ago, we started seeing some mature bucks really
- 16:29Speaker 1: cruising and starting to get pretty aggressive. What do you
- 16:33Speaker 1: notice about the differences when it comes to signmaking with
- 16:35Speaker 1: the white tails that you're hunting in the western Colorado
- 16:39Speaker 1: versus in your home state of Missouri. UM, as far
- 16:43Speaker 1: as sign and stuff, it's really not a whole lot
- 16:45Speaker 1: different there. They're they're you know, making rubs, tearing up
- 16:48Speaker 1: scrapes right now, UM, same as as they are in Missouri. UM.
- 16:52Speaker 1: You know, it's not too far from western Kansas. So
- 16:54Speaker 1: it's pretty pretty similar as far as signmaking. And you know,
- 16:57Speaker 1: as of lately that's what most of our our trail
- 16:59Speaker 1: cameras moved to. Scrapes. The bucks have been checking them
- 17:02Speaker 1: pretty frequent. UM, you know, just waiting for those first
- 17:05Speaker 1: first those that come in the heat. They're getting pretty empty.
- 17:07Speaker 1: What food sources are relevant right now in Colorado, So
- 17:13Speaker 1: the food source we've this has been a learning curve
- 17:15Speaker 1: for us this year. UM. This property is under development
- 17:20Speaker 1: essentially for at frags and so when the landoun appurchased
- 17:24Speaker 1: a few years ago, it was really underdeveloped. UM. And
- 17:26Speaker 1: they've really worked on the water rights and getting some
- 17:28Speaker 1: of these fields in the production. And so one of
- 17:31Speaker 1: the uh I would say the key focus for us
- 17:34Speaker 1: has been over a green tritoricale field which is um,
- 17:37Speaker 1: you know similar, it's like a winter week to forge
- 17:39Speaker 1: triticala bill still turn cows out onto and and uh
- 17:42Speaker 1: feed cows on. But the deer I've been hammering. I
- 17:45Speaker 1: know this time of year. In the past, you've had
- 17:47Speaker 1: a lot of success with decoying in bucks. So what
- 17:50Speaker 1: are your decoyest strategies in early November? Yeah, I mean
- 17:54Speaker 1: I can't think of a better time and use a
- 17:55Speaker 1: decoy than writing it right now at October early November, UM,
- 18:00Speaker 1: actual getting aggressive. They're starting to push each other around
- 18:02Speaker 1: and really established dominance, and I think that you know, uh,
- 18:05Speaker 1: this is this is the most opportune time to use one.
- 18:08Speaker 1: So I've been using a lot this past week. UM.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Had to success with some younger deer, but no shot
- 18:14Speaker 1: off with any sin of macure here yet. It seems
- 18:17Speaker 1: like Mike, you're often using your decoys on a field edge.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Are there every scenarios where you're using one in cover? No? Um?
- 18:24Speaker 1: So yeah, when it comes to decoying, I I like
- 18:27Speaker 1: to hear and be able to see the dear the
- 18:29Speaker 1: decoy from a long way away if possible. Um, just
- 18:32Speaker 1: because it's it's kind of like you know, ground blinds
- 18:35Speaker 1: at the depop up a double bowl or whatever in
- 18:37Speaker 1: the in a tight area and uh, the deer see
- 18:39Speaker 1: they're gonna kind of freak out, um, and so hi,
- 18:42Speaker 1: I don't don't want to catch them off guards. Usually
- 18:44Speaker 1: I'm using it in open areas a lot of times
- 18:46Speaker 1: in areas off of like where the main you know,
- 18:50Speaker 1: concentration of deer is going to be. Because I'm sure
- 18:52Speaker 1: if you've ever used the decoy before, you know, the
- 18:53Speaker 1: dose can get real curious and get down when and
- 18:56Speaker 1: then pook off the decoy and kind of ruin your hunt.
- 18:59Speaker 1: So um, Fortunately in Colorado they've been very tolerable. But
- 19:02Speaker 1: those really don't pay much attention to the decoy in
- 19:04Speaker 1: the books. Um, you know, if they're get in that
- 19:06Speaker 1: comfort zone area and you call at them and get
- 19:09Speaker 1: them fired up there and they're coming in hot, tell
- 19:11Speaker 1: us about the posture of the decoy for early November.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Are you going one antler or two antlers? What are
- 19:17Speaker 1: you doing with the tail, what are you doing with
- 19:18Speaker 1: the ears, et cetera. So that do I use the
- 19:21Speaker 1: Dave Smith DSD posturing buck decoy. So it's always a
- 19:24Speaker 1: posturing position. The years are are in a pinback position. Um,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I usually use both handlers. I guess you could just
- 19:31Speaker 1: throw one on there either way. Um, you know it's
- 19:34Speaker 1: a it's a baskular at hundred and five and eight point,
- 19:36Speaker 1: you know, trashy little brows. So it's um, you know
- 19:40Speaker 1: it's it's just perfect, like two year old type buck
- 19:42Speaker 1: and so, um, you're not gonna not gonna scare much
- 19:44Speaker 1: away with it. I don't feel like, especially if you're hunting,
- 19:47Speaker 1: you know, mature dominant here now in your home state
- 19:49Speaker 1: of Missouri, what is your favorite day of the rod
- 19:52Speaker 1: or your favorite stretch of days of the rock? You know,
- 19:55Speaker 1: November seven has been the most productive for me over
- 19:58Speaker 1: the years. Um, but I do love these next few
- 20:01Speaker 1: days coming up here. Um, basically this next week for
- 20:04Speaker 1: for Missouri. You know, every day before rifle season is
- 20:09Speaker 1: is you know the best days, because once rifles hits,
- 20:12Speaker 1: it's just a whole different season. So I believe we
- 20:16Speaker 1: open on I want to say, like the thirteenth this year, so, um,
- 20:21Speaker 1: you know, the seventh kind of lies right in the
- 20:22Speaker 1: middle of that sweet spot. But um, you know that's
- 20:25Speaker 1: been the most productive day for me, is the seventh.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Describe your ideal set up if you're in a tree
- 20:30Speaker 1: stand on November seven? What are you overlooking? Why are
- 20:33Speaker 1: you in that area? Why are bucks want to be
- 20:35Speaker 1: in that area? So usually by November seven, I'm diving
- 20:39Speaker 1: into some cover, usually uh hunting mornings, um, you know,
- 20:43Speaker 1: hoping to catch tier coming back to betting areas on
- 20:46Speaker 1: the downward side of a betting area. You know, a
- 20:49Speaker 1: lot of times when bucks are gonna um, you know,
- 20:51Speaker 1: they're they're just cruising looking for a hot day. They're
- 20:53Speaker 1: gonna be trying to be as most efficient as possible,
- 20:55Speaker 1: So they're gonna circle the downward side of these known
- 20:59Speaker 1: betting areas and just sent check them. You know, they're
- 21:01Speaker 1: not gonna just trump through zigzagg through the whole bedding
- 21:03Speaker 1: area looking for a hot dough. They're just gonna be
- 21:05Speaker 1: proven spin checking. And so a lot of times I'd
- 21:07Speaker 1: like to get on the down one side of a
- 21:09Speaker 1: known bedding area UM with some sort of obstruction to
- 21:12Speaker 1: whether it's a creek or a or a ridge, um
- 21:15Speaker 1: to where you know you can hopefully attention to heat
- 21:17Speaker 1: here from coming behind you and catch him on on
- 21:19Speaker 1: a pretty heavily used trail that miss down wind going forward.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Then in the sex week or so, what do you
- 21:24Speaker 1: think that buck activity is going to be on a
- 21:26Speaker 1: scale of one to ten in Colorado? Oh, man, I
- 21:30Speaker 1: think it's gonna be. I think this next week. I
- 21:32Speaker 1: think it's gonna be the week. Man. It's the weather.
- 21:35Speaker 1: It's just long lining up perfectly. Um, we're kind of
- 21:38Speaker 1: unfeasibly warm for the most part. I feel like, uh,
- 21:42Speaker 1: you know, in Missouri and Colorado boath and so um.
- 21:45Speaker 1: I don't remember a time when, um, in the recent future,
- 21:49Speaker 1: at least in the recent past, um, where where the
- 21:52Speaker 1: ruts and the November and these weather conissions are lined
- 21:55Speaker 1: up as they as they are this coming week. So
- 21:58Speaker 1: if you got vacation time, I would get out and
- 22:00Speaker 1: get in a stand. It's gonna be highs in the
- 22:02Speaker 1: forties here in Missouri and Colorado is gonna be even
- 22:05Speaker 1: colder than that in the evening. But it's gonna be awesome.
- 22:08Speaker 1: I love the optimism. My good luck with the rest
- 22:10Speaker 1: of your season. And thanks for joining me. Thanks funny,
- 22:13Speaker 1: appreciate it alright and joining us on the line. Next
- 22:16Speaker 1: is Alex Comstock from Whitetail DNA in Minnesota. Now, Alex
- 22:20Speaker 1: in Minnesota, what would you say the buck activity has
- 22:22Speaker 1: been lately on a scale of one to ten, so
- 22:26Speaker 1: I'd say it's probably been about a tourist three. Things
- 22:28Speaker 1: have been very slow for me. I have not been
- 22:31Speaker 1: seen a sure Bucks at all. The only reason I
- 22:33Speaker 1: even give it a two or three is just from
- 22:35Speaker 1: reports from buddies at Hunt very close to me that
- 22:38Speaker 1: I've seen a little bit. But overall it's been really
- 22:41Speaker 1: slow from me so far. What would you attribute that
- 22:43Speaker 1: slow movement to right now in places that you're haunting
- 22:46Speaker 1: in Minnesota? I think I mainly attribute it to weather. Um,
- 22:52Speaker 1: it's been last year at this time, looking over you
- 22:55Speaker 1: know year to year weather information, we're blows and the
- 22:58Speaker 1: team ties in the upper twenties, low thirties, and this
- 23:02Speaker 1: year right now, we've had highs in the fifties and
- 23:04Speaker 1: sixties and lows in the forties and fifties. So the
- 23:07Speaker 1: weather it's just really not been ideal. So to encounter
- 23:10Speaker 1: some better movement, what do you think you need to
- 23:12Speaker 1: change about your strategy? Is to find a rutting buck
- 23:14Speaker 1: in the coming week. I'm hoping that this time of
- 23:18Speaker 1: year and weather it's going to help me with As
- 23:21Speaker 1: we move into the first week in November, temperature are
- 23:24Speaker 1: supposed to drop here, and based on what I'm seeing
- 23:27Speaker 1: out in the woods, you know, I've been not seeing
- 23:29Speaker 1: a ton of scraping activity compared to the years before.
- 23:32Speaker 1: And I just hope we're a week or so back,
- 23:35Speaker 1: you know, and that things are really going to ramp
- 23:38Speaker 1: up here the next week. Where are you running your
- 23:40Speaker 1: trail camera as we get into early November, I've still
- 23:44Speaker 1: got pretty much all of my trail cameras on either
- 23:47Speaker 1: scrapes or mox scrapes. That seems to be the best
- 23:49Speaker 1: for me. Even though as we moved into early November
- 23:52Speaker 1: and bucks are chasing a little more, I find that
- 23:54Speaker 1: scrapes are gonna be the best spot for trail cameras.
- 23:56Speaker 1: And then, uh, if you don't have among scrapes and
- 23:59Speaker 1: now I've got them, and you know, some type funnels
- 24:01Speaker 1: and stuff like that. What food sources are relevant right
- 24:05Speaker 1: now to deer and deer hunters in Minnesota, you know,
- 24:09Speaker 1: if you've got you know, late acorns dropping. Otherwise where
- 24:12Speaker 1: I'm at, um there are mountain ashberries and buck thorn
- 24:15Speaker 1: which they eat a lot. And that's you know, pretty
- 24:17Speaker 1: much the extent of it. Where where I'm at Historically
- 24:21Speaker 1: this time of year in Minnesota. Are you doing any
- 24:23Speaker 1: calling or decoying. I have started doing some calling. I've
- 24:27Speaker 1: had some pretty good success in the years past, especially
- 24:30Speaker 1: with rattling. Uh not anything, no success yet, but this
- 24:33Speaker 1: is right now at the time of year when I'm
- 24:35Speaker 1: starting to starting to do some calling, and and if
- 24:38Speaker 1: you've got a good setup for decoin. You don't have
- 24:40Speaker 1: a ton of good setups, but when you get those areas,
- 24:43Speaker 1: whether you're on a field edge or some type of
- 24:45Speaker 1: clearing or deer can see for a while, I think
- 24:47Speaker 1: this is probably the best time to be decoyed, when
- 24:50Speaker 1: you have a successful calling sequence in early November and
- 24:53Speaker 1: years past. What are some themes that are consistent among
- 24:57Speaker 1: those situations where you're able to call in a book,
- 25:03Speaker 1: you know, it's either you know, sometimes will be blind rattling,
- 25:05Speaker 1: but typically it's if you if you've got a loan
- 25:07Speaker 1: buck that you're seeing off in the distance, Um, you know,
- 25:10Speaker 1: if I've you know, it's very common where you see
- 25:13Speaker 1: something through the through September, you catch a glance, I'm
- 25:16Speaker 1: not sure I feel what it was, smack dandlers together
- 25:18Speaker 1: and you know, hopefully you can get that deer to
- 25:20Speaker 1: come in and check you out and that way you
- 25:22Speaker 1: get at least a better look and know what exactly
- 25:24Speaker 1: what it is in your state. Do you have a
- 25:26Speaker 1: favorite day of the rut or favorite stretch of the rut?
- 25:30Speaker 1: My favorite stretches probably that November three to the seven,
- 25:35Speaker 1: So that's you know, we're coming up on that, and uh,
- 25:38Speaker 1: that's definitely where I've seen to have the best activity
- 25:40Speaker 1: in the best hunts, you know, year over year during
- 25:43Speaker 1: that stretch at November three November seven. What is an
- 25:47Speaker 1: ideal set up look like for you in Minnesota? My
- 25:51Speaker 1: favorite set ups for sure are some type of pinch
- 25:53Speaker 1: or funnel with in between dough bet in areas you
- 25:56Speaker 1: know those bucks are just starting, you know, whether some
- 25:59Speaker 1: does are coming into stress or not. You know, those
- 26:01Speaker 1: bucks are really starting to check. And if you can
- 26:03Speaker 1: get in between betting areas, I think that's kind of
- 26:06Speaker 1: mine go to set up. If you're doing some in
- 26:08Speaker 1: Sason scouting this time of year, what are some things
- 26:11Speaker 1: that you're looking for. I'm just looking for concentrated buck signs,
- 26:15Speaker 1: you know, and if I can find areas with a
- 26:18Speaker 1: ton of rubs, ton of scrapes, that helped me even
- 26:21Speaker 1: if that sign is made night or even it's been
- 26:23Speaker 1: made in late October bucks are in that area general speaking,
- 26:27Speaker 1: And then that's right, like the key in on going forward.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Then in this next week or so, what do you
- 26:31Speaker 1: think that bucket activity is going to be on a
- 26:33Speaker 1: scale of one to ten in Minnesota? I would definitely
- 26:36Speaker 1: like to see it get up into that seven plus range,
- 26:39Speaker 1: just being how slow has been. You almost feel like
- 26:41Speaker 1: it's do that it's gonna just really pick up. And
- 26:44Speaker 1: I just hope things are going to break open here
- 26:45Speaker 1: pretty much any day. All right, Alex, I hope you're
- 26:48Speaker 1: wrong and you even get a ten out of ten,
- 26:49Speaker 1: But good luck with your haunts, and thanks for joining
- 26:52Speaker 1: all right, Thanks Spencer, all right and joining us online.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Next is Clay Nucom, who you know from meat Eater
- 26:58Speaker 1: and Bear Grease and all sorts of other places in
- 27:00Speaker 1: the Mediator network. Who is in Arkansas? Now? Clay in Arkansas?
- 27:04Speaker 1: What would you say the bucket activity has been lately
- 27:06Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten. I from personal observation,
- 27:11Speaker 1: I would have expected it to be a little bit
- 27:13Speaker 1: hotter right now. So I'm gonna give it a six, Spencer,
- 27:16Speaker 1: because I have yet to see a mature buck really honest,
- 27:24Speaker 1: you know, chasing those doing what you kind of expect
- 27:27Speaker 1: to see him do around here. Right now, this right
- 27:31Speaker 1: around Halloween is usually the best time for us. And uh,
- 27:36Speaker 1: I think it's gonna get real good. But I'm gonna
- 27:38Speaker 1: give it a six for right now. If you were
- 27:42Speaker 1: to put a name on this phase of the rod
- 27:44Speaker 1: in Arkansas, what would you say that it is? Right now?
- 27:47Speaker 1: Just the seeking phase. These bucks I'm starting to see
- 27:52Speaker 1: on trail camera mature dear on their feet in the daytime,
- 27:58Speaker 1: but not with a lot of times right now. I
- 28:02Speaker 1: mean I'm seeing mature bucks like Kendon does, but I
- 28:07Speaker 1: have not seen that this year. And I have seen
- 28:09Speaker 1: a couple of mature bucks on camera just kind of cruising,
- 28:14Speaker 1: and so I would call it. You know, they're they're
- 28:20Speaker 1: they're moving around looking for those first hot dose in
- 28:24Speaker 1: early November in Arkansas, where do you want to be
- 28:26Speaker 1: running your trail cameras? M m over a pile of
- 28:32Speaker 1: corn on private land, spencer, that's where you want to
- 28:35Speaker 1: put your true cameras. Um, that's not a joke. Really,
- 28:40Speaker 1: you can do it, and it's a great way to
- 28:42Speaker 1: get pictures of deer. Secondly, on scrapes the deer are
- 28:50Speaker 1: usually hitting scrapes really good. This year. I have not
- 28:52Speaker 1: got as many pictures of bucks over scrapes right now,
- 28:56Speaker 1: but that's where I want them, beds, piles of corn.
- 29:01Speaker 1: What other food sources are relevant for deer hunters right
- 29:03Speaker 1: now in Arkansas? Acorns big time. They're where there are acorns.
- 29:09Speaker 1: The deer hitting the acron's hard. There are large areas
- 29:14Speaker 1: that I found that don't have many acres, and so
- 29:17Speaker 1: the deer are, you know, they're they're hitting field edges
- 29:22Speaker 1: some more than I would usually expect them to this
- 29:25Speaker 1: time of year. And and we're not in an agricultural area.
- 29:28Speaker 1: We're we're just in kind of you know, we've got
- 29:32Speaker 1: a lot of cattle pastures and different things. But I
- 29:34Speaker 1: would imagine guys with food plots, which we don't have
- 29:37Speaker 1: really any improved land that we're hunting in terms of
- 29:41Speaker 1: deer improvement. Uh, food plots would be probably pretty hot
- 29:45Speaker 1: right now historically clay in Arkansas? What is your favorite
- 29:49Speaker 1: day or your favorite stretch of days of the white
- 29:51Speaker 1: tail rock? No? Remember fifth, six and seven, that that's
- 29:56Speaker 1: the time too in my opinion to kill one. I've
- 30:02Speaker 1: just I've killed deer on those the multiple deer on
- 30:06Speaker 1: those three days, just at different times, and the big
- 30:12Speaker 1: deer just seemed to be moving and they're typically with
- 30:15Speaker 1: a dough. They're they're with a dough during that time,
- 30:19Speaker 1: and that's that's when I like to hunt them. During
- 30:22Speaker 1: November five November seven, What is your ideal set up
- 30:26Speaker 1: look like in Arkansas? When you're in a tree sin,
- 30:29Speaker 1: I'm I'm hunting funnels during that time. I'm trying to
- 30:34Speaker 1: just find areas where I'm gonna see a lot of deer,
- 30:39Speaker 1: catch deer moving and the funnels for me on on
- 30:45Speaker 1: the private land that I hunt and I hunt national
- 30:48Speaker 1: forest some and in that it's totally different. But this
- 30:51Speaker 1: year I'm hunting mainly private up here, and that is
- 30:54Speaker 1: gonna mean little corridors between fields, the back corners of fields,
- 31:00Speaker 1: the heads, the big hollows, and just neck down topographic
- 31:07Speaker 1: features that draw deer in. And that's where I'm gonna
- 31:11Speaker 1: be sitting is in these little little funnels. Famously, Clay,
- 31:16Speaker 1: you had a set over rattling antlers that Steve broke
- 31:19Speaker 1: off in Texas on Meat Eater Season ten that we
- 31:21Speaker 1: then auctioned off in the Meat Eater Auction House of
- 31:24Speaker 1: oddities which you can find in our meat eater store. Now,
- 31:27Speaker 1: I know you have rattling antlers like that, but do
- 31:30Speaker 1: you use them a lot in Arkansas this time of year? Well,
- 31:33Speaker 1: I still haven't forgiven Steve for breaking my rattling antlers.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Number one. Yes, I do some rattling, but I won't
- 31:42Speaker 1: rattle much this week. I tell you the most success
- 31:46Speaker 1: I've had in Arkansas, which has been minimal. These there
- 31:50Speaker 1: just for whatever reason that I don't really understand. It
- 31:54Speaker 1: just they're not gonna respond like the deer in the
- 31:57Speaker 1: Midwest can do at times to rattle lame. I have
- 32:01Speaker 1: rattled in dere usually. I remember rattling in a good
- 32:06Speaker 1: buck on November the tenth one time. Um. I do
- 32:12Speaker 1: carry a synthetic set of a rattling device, and I
- 32:18Speaker 1: will tickle it every now and then, but I can't
- 32:20Speaker 1: remember the last time it actually helped me kill it.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Dear this time of year going forward, then, in this
- 32:25Speaker 1: next week or so, what do you think that bucket
- 32:27Speaker 1: activity is going to be on a scale of one
- 32:29Speaker 1: to ten in Arkansas. It's gonna be as good as
- 32:32Speaker 1: it it's gonna get. It's gonna be a ten because
- 32:36Speaker 1: we've finally got some cold weather. The weather has been
- 32:38Speaker 1: very warm in Arkansas, so we finally got this cold
- 32:42Speaker 1: weather coming in, which is great. Last year during this
- 32:45Speaker 1: time it is incredibly hot and there it was real
- 32:49Speaker 1: tough first week in November. This year, I expect it
- 32:53Speaker 1: to be as good as it gets, so I'm giving
