- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. Ember Saturday, September 26 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of this Ember day, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month of the year, the Jews used to celebrate at the conclusion of the harvest, the feast of tabernacles, and lived during eight days under tents or huts made of foliage in remembrance of the nomadic life of the Israelites in the desert, which we hear about in the second lesson. This feast was preceded on the tenth of the month by the very solemn day of expiation called holy, which we hear of in the first lesson. On this day, the high priest purified himself in the basin which stood before the sanctuary.
- 1:11Then taking the blood of the victims, he entered the holy of holies and prayed near the mercy seat, which we hear of in the epistle or the sixth lesson. The Saturday in the September Ember week, formerly the seventh month of the year, recalls this feast both of penance and joy. The prophets Micaeus, Zacharias, and Daniel whose writings were read through during the night or vigil preceding the Sunday speak in similar terms of the salvation brought by God to those who atone for their sins and implore his protection amid the dangers that threaten them. The epistle shows the new alliance which Jesus Christ has established between our repentant souls and God by offering to him in the real holy of holies, which is heaven, the blood which he shed upon the cross to atone for our sins. In the same way as Jesus delivered the woman whom Satan had bound for eighteen years.
- 2:28And like the gardener mentioned in the gospel, the priests heal our souls and by their prayers and their untiring zeal, ward off from souls the rigors of divine justice making them produce sweet fruits of penance and good works. This mass is therefore imminently suited for an ordination. After the first lesson are ordained the porters. After the second, the readers. After the third, the exorcists.
- 3:08After the fourth, the acolytes. After the fifth, the subdeacons. After the epistle, the deacons. And before the last verse of the tract, the priests. Of today's commemorated saints, Cyprian and Justina, in the liturgical year, Dom Prosper Geringer writes the following.
- 3:38Whosoever ye be that are seduced by the mysteries of the demons, none of you can equal the zeal I once had for these false gods, nor my researches into their secrets, nor the vain power they had communicated to me. To me, Cyprian, who from my infancy was given up to the service of the dragon in the Citadel of Minerva. Learn from me the deceitfulness of their illusions. A virgin has proved to me that their power is but smoke. The king of the demons was arrested at the door of a mere child and could not cross the threshold.
- 4:25He who promises so much is a liar. A woman makes sport of the boaster who vaunted he could shake heaven and earth. The roaring lion becomes a startled gnat before the Christian virgin, Justina. Cyprian, who was first a magician and afterwards a martyr attempted by charms and spells to make Justina a Christian virgin consent to the passion of a certain young man. He consulted the devil as to the best way to succeed and was told in reply that no art would be of any service to him against the true disciples of Christ.
- 5:15This answer made so great an impression on Cyprian that grieving bitterly over his former manner of life, he abandoned his magical arts and was completely converted to the faith of Christ our Lord. Accused of being a Christian, he was seized together with the virgin Justina and they were both severely scourged. They were then thrown into prison to see if they would change their mind. But on being taken out as they remained firm in the Christian religion, they were cast into a cauldron of boiling pitch, fat, and wax. Finally, they were beheaded at Nicomedia.
- 6:06Their bodies were left six days unburied, after which some sailors carried them secretly by night to their ship and conveyed them to Rome. They were first buried on the estate of a noble lady named Rufina, but afterwards were translated into the city and laid in Constantine's Basilica near the baptistery. He who sought to ruin thee is now, O Virgin, thy trophy of victory. And for thee, O Cyprian, the path of crime turned aside into the way of salvation. May you together triumph over Satan in this age when spirit dealing is seducing so many faltering faithless souls.
- 7:03Teach Christians after your example to arm themselves against this and every other danger with the sign of the cross. Then will the enemy be forced to say again, I saw a terrible sign and I trembled. I beheld the sign of the crucified and my strength melted like wax. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 7:43The introit. Come in. Fall down before God. Bow the knee. Plead we with the Lord who made us.
- 7:55Who but the Lord is our God. Come. Rejoice we in the Lord's honor. Cry we out for gladness to God, our deliverer. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages.
- 8:21Amen. Come in. Fall down before God. Bow the knee. Plead we with the Lord who made us.
- 8:33Who but the Lord is our God? After the Kirier Eleison, the priest says, oramus, let us pray. And then, us kneel. All genuflect and the server responds levitate. Arise.
- 8:58And the priest prays the first collect. Almighty ever living God, who makest wholesome fasting into a bodily and spiritual remedy, we humbly entreat thy majesty to be appeased by the prayers of those who fast and to grant us succor both now and in time to come through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the book of Leviticus. In those days, the Lord spoke to Moses and told him, the tenth day of the seventh month is the day you are to honor by making atonement.
- 9:52It will be proclaimed holy, and you will fast on it as well as offering the Lord burnt sacrifice. During this day, you shall do no servile work. It is a day of atonement to win the Lord's mercy for you. If anyone does not fast on that day, he is lost to his people. I will rid the people too of anyone who does any work on it.
- 10:23It must be an unalterable rule with you at all times and everywhere to cease work on that day. It is to be all repose. The fast will begin on the evening of the ninth day, and from evening to evening you will rest, says the Lord Almighty. The first gradual. Pardon our sins, O Lord.
- 10:54Shall the heathen ask what has become of their God? O God, our savior, help us. Deliver us, Lord, for the glory of thy name. The second collect. Let us pray.
- 11:14Let us kneel. Arise. Grant us, we pray thee, almighty God, that by fasting we may be filled with thy grace, and by abstaining become stronger than all our foes through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the book of Leviticus.
- 11:52In those days, the Lord spoke to Moses and told him, this is how you will celebrate your week of feasting in the Lord's honor, in the time when the last of your crops have been gathered in from the fifteenth day of the seventh month onwards. The first and the eighth days will be all repose. And on the first day, you will pluck fruit from some favorite tree and branches of palms, leafy boughs and oziers from the riverbanks, and so keep holiday in the presence of the Lord your God. For a whole week every year, you will honor this observance, making it a law at all times and everywhere. It is to be kept in the seventh month, and for seven days you will live in arbors.
- 12:47The whole race of Israel will become tent dwellers to remind those who come after you that I bade the sons of Israel dwell in tents when I rescued them from the land of Egypt. I, the Lord, your God. The second gradual. God, ever our protector, do not disregard us now. Look favorably on these servants of thine.
- 13:22Lord god of hosts, listen to the prayers of thy servants. The third collect. Let us pray. Let us kneel. Arise.
- 13:39Keep watch over thy household, O Lord, we beg thee. Let thy bounty grant us those eternally life giving remedies which thy inspiration prompts us to seek. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the prophet Micah.
- 14:13With that staff of thine, oh, Lord, our God, tend thy people, thy own flock in a sequestered glade as thou didst long sense. A sight to make the Gentiles envy such sturdiness as theirs. Was there ever such a God so ready to forgive sins, to overlook faults among the scattered remnant of his chosen race? He will exact vengeance no more. He loves to pardon.
- 14:49He will relent and have mercy on us, quashing our guilt, burying our sins away, see deep. Thou wilt keep thy promise to Jacob. Show mercy to Abraham, the promised mercies of long ago, O Lord, our God. The third gradual. Relent a little, Lord.
- 15:21Be gracious to thy servants. Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation. The fourth collect. Let us pray. Let us kneel.
- 15:39Arise. Grant we pray thee, almighty God, that we may so abstain from the pleasures of eating and drinking as to fast likewise from our besetting sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the prophet Zechariah. In those days, the word of the Lord came to me saying, thus says the Lord of hosts.
- 16:23Once when your fathers provoked me to anger, it was my sure resolve to bring calamity on you, and I did not spare. Now I have relented, and it is my sure resolve to bless the people of Judah, to bless Jerusalem. But this remains to be done. You must deal truthfully with one another, Give just and faithful awards at the city gate. Refrain from plotting injury to one another in secret.
- 17:00Love the false oath no longer. All these are things I hate, says the Lord. And this word too the Lord of hosts sent to me. Thus says the Lord of hosts. Henceforth, the fasts in the fourth and fifth and seventh and tenth months shall bring gladness and rejoicing to the people of Judah, shall be high festivals.
- 17:33Only you must be lovers of truthfulness and peace, says the Lord of hosts. The fourth gradual. Welcome as incense smoke. Let my prayer rise up before thee, o lord. When I lift up my hands, let it be acceptable as the evening sacrifice.
- 18:03The fifth collect. Let us pray. Let us kneel. Arise. Thou hast appointed, o lord, this solemn fast to be kept to thy glory.
- 18:19Do thou, we beseech thee, comfort us in thy mercy, forgiving our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the prophet Daniel. In those days the angel of the Lord went down with Azarias and his companions into the furnace, And he drove the flame of the fire out of the furnace and made the midst of the furnace like the blowing of a wind bringing dew. But the flame mounted up above the furnace nine and forty cubits, and it broke forth and burnt such of the Chaldeans, the king's servants, as it found heating it.
- 19:22And the fire touched them not at all, nor troubled them, nor did them any harm. Then these three, as with one mouth, praised and glorified and blessed God in the furnace saying, blessed art thou, o Lord, the God of our fathers, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever. And blessed is thy holy and glorious name, praiseworthy and exalted above all for all ages. Blessed art thou in the temple of thy holy glory, praiseworthy and glorious above all forever. Blessed art thou on the holy throne of thy kingdom, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.
- 20:13Blessed art thou upon the scepter of thine divinity, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever. Blessed art thou who look into the depths from thy throne upon the cherubim, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever. Blessed art thou who walk upon the wings of the wind and on the waves of the sea, praiseworthy and exalted above all for ever. Let all thine angels and saints bless thee, and praise thee, and exalt thee above all for ever. Let the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all the things that are in them bless thee and praise thee and exalt thee above all forever.
- 21:05Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost. Praise worthy and exalted above all forever. As it was in the beginning is now and shall be through all ages of ages. Amen. Praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.
- 21:26Blessed art thou, O Lord, the God of our fathers. Praiseworthy and exalted above all forever. Here and not before in this mass, the priest says, dominus verbisum, the Lord be with you. To which the server responds, and with thy spirit. And the priest continues with the sixth collect.
- 22:00Ouramus, let us pray. O God, who didst allay the flames of the furnace for the three young men, in thy mercy, grant that we, thy servants, may not be consumed by the flames of sin, through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of saints Cyprian and Justina. Let thy blessed martyrs Cyprian and Justina ever lend us strength and protection, oh lord, for thou never ceases to regard with mercy those to whom thou give us such powerful aid through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 23:10Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews. There was an outer tabernacle which contained the lampstand and the table and the loaves set out before God. Sanctuary was the name given to this. And then beyond the second veil, the inner sanctuary as it is called, with the golden censer and the ark of the covenant gilded all round.
- 23:48In the ark rested the golden urn with the manna in it, Aaron's staff that budded, and the tablets on which the covenant was inscribed. Above were the cherubim, heralds of the divine glory, spreading their wings over the throne of mercy. We have no time to treat of these more particularly, but this was the general fashion of it. Into the outer tabernacle the priests made their way at all times in the performance of their duties. Into this other, only the high priest once a year.
- 24:31And even then not without an offering of blood for the faults which he and the people had committed unknowingly. The Holy Spirit meant us to see that no way of access to the true sanctuary lay open to us as long as the former tabernacle maintained its standing. And that allegory still holds good at the present day. Here are the gifts and sacrifices being offered which have no power where conscience is concerned to bring the worshiper to his full growth. They are but outward observances connected with food and drink ceremonial washings on this occasion or that instituted to hold their own until better times should come.
- 25:23Meanwhile, Christ has taken his place as our high priest to win us blessings that still lie in the future. He makes use of a greater, a more complete tabernacle which human hands never fashioned. It does not belong to this order of creation at all. It is his own blood not the blood of goats and calves that has enabled him to enter once for all into the sanctuary. The ransom he has won lasts forever.
- 26:05The tract. Praise the Lord all you Gentiles. Let all nations of the world do him honor. Abundant has his mercy been towards us. The Lord remains true to his word forever.
- 26:24A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At that time, Jesus told the multitude this parable. There was a man that had a fig tree planted in his vineyard. But when he came and looked for fruit on it, he could find none. Whereupon he said to his vine dresser, see now, I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree for three years and cannot find any.
- 26:58Cut it down. Why should it be a useless charge upon the land? But he answered thus, sir, let it stand this year too so that I may have time to dig and put dung round it. Perhaps it will bear fruit. If not, it will be time to cut it down then.
- 27:23There was a Sabbath day on which he was preaching in one of their synagogues. Here there was a woman who for eighteen years had suffered under some influence that disabled her, she was bent down and could not lift her head straight. Jesus saw her and called to her, woman, he said, thou art rid of thy infirmity. Then he laid his hands on her and immediately she was raised upright and gave praise to God. But the ruler of the synagogue indignant that Jesus should heal them on the Sabbath day, turned and said to the multitude, you have six days on which work is allowed.
- 28:15You should come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath. And the Lord gave him this answer. What? You hypocrites. Is there any one of you that will not untie his ox or his ass from the stall and take them down to water when it is the Sabbath?
- 28:39And here is this daughter of Abraham whom Satan had kept bound these eighteen years past. Was it wrong that she should be delivered on the Sabbath day from bonds like these? All his adversaries were put to shame by this saying of his and the whole multitude rejoiced over the marvelous works he did. The offertory. Lord God, my deliverer.
- 29:18Day and night I cry aloud to thee. Lord, let my prayer reach thy presence. The secret. Almighty God, grant we beseech thee that this sacrifice offered up in the sight of thy divine majesty may ensure to us the grace of fervor and may merit for us the enjoyment of a happy eternity. A commemoration of Saints Cyprian and Justina.
- 29:57Be appeased, we beseech thee, oh, Lord, by the gifts now offered and by the intercession of thy holy martyrs, Cyprian and Justina. Defend us from all dangers Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface, just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, Oh, holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God. Through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, The heavens and the hosts of heaven, together with the blessed Seraphim, joyfully do magnify.
- 31:02We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
- 31:36The communion. You will celebrate a feast in the seventh month to remind you of the days when I bade the Israelites dwell in tents after I had rescued them from the land of Egypt. I, the Lord, your God. The post communion. Let us pray.
- 32:05In us, we beseech thee, o Lord. May thy sacraments affect that which they signify. And may we one day see face to face him who now is hidden from us under these appearances. A commemoration of saints Cyprian and Justina. May this communion, oh Lord, cleanse us from guilt and through the intercession of thy holy martyrs, Cyprian and Justina, make us share in the heavenly healing through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost.
- 32:56God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Let us bless the Lord.
- 33:17Saint Cyprian, pray for us. Saint Justina, pray for us.
