- 0:00Matthew chapter 27. Let us pray.
- 0:07Oh God Almighty, you're so good. Thank you Jesus for another day.
- 0:12Thank you for giving us life. Abundant Holy Spirit, I pray
- 0:16you'll come in and teach us. I decrease as you increase.
- 0:21Holy Spirit, I just pray that you'll give us the pure word
- 0:27today. Lord, I pray that you'll break
- 0:30down all of our preconceived ideas and notions of your word,
- 0:35God, and all the things that we've been taught by man, God.
- 0:39And I just pray, Holy Spirit, that you will teach us, Holy
- 0:44Spirit, you will guide us. Let this word jump off the pages
- 0:49and into our hearts and into our minds and let us hide it in our
- 0:52hearts so that we might not sin against you.
- 0:56Jesus, I pray that you'll be honored and glorified and
- 0:59magnified in the highest throughout all generations,
- 1:03throughout all lands and people groups.
- 1:06We thank you for your sacrifice. We thank you for your perfect
- 1:10life. We thank you for the indwelling
- 1:12of the Holy Spirit. We thank you for the helper,
- 1:15thank you Jesus and God Almighty.
- 1:18I pray that we will be a people that are found worshiping you in
- 1:22spirit and truth. Yes Lord, come quickly, we love
- 1:26you in Jesus name I pray, Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 1:33When the morning was come, all the chief priests and the elders
- 1:38of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to
- 1:42death. So we can see here that Jesus
- 1:46has been wrongfully arrested. We can see here that they have
- 1:52unlawfully held him through the middle of the night.
- 1:56We can see here that Judas has betrayed him with a kiss.
- 2:00We can see here that Jesus had lived a perfect, sinless life.
- 2:06He did not deserve this treatment.
- 2:08And we can see here that mankind is hostile towards God and the
- 2:13goodness of God. And we cannot stand whenever
- 2:19Jesus is exposing all of our sins.
- 2:24And what we do is we fight against him.
- 2:27What we do is we war against him.
- 2:29And we tried to diminish him. We try to get rid of him.
- 2:33And this is a picture of mankind and the hostility towards God
- 2:39and the goodness of God. Jesus had done nothing wrong.
- 2:43He didn't deserve this treatment.
- 2:46And you can see how these people were delusional in their
- 2:50approach to Jesus. They were delusional in their
- 2:54approach to God. And you can see how even in our
- 2:58day and even in our hour, you see it all around.
- 3:01You tried to give people sound doctrine, sound counsel, and
- 3:06they will not put up with it. They only want to amass to
- 3:09themselves the teachers that will tickle their ears and tell
- 3:13them that the prosperity gospel is what it's all about.
- 3:16And whenever it doesn't add up and whenever they fall from
- 3:20their high horse, there is so much suicide and there's so much
- 3:29desperation and there's so much of A falling away because God
- 3:35didn't behave in the way that they wanted him to.
- 3:39God didn't behave in the way that they were taught that God
- 3:43was going to if they would just send their money to whatever
- 3:48teacher was trying to teach them.
- 3:51And you can see it happening all around us.
- 3:54You can see it with this time where Judas was trying to amass
- 4:01to himself wealth through the teaching of Jesus, and it
- 4:05doesn't work that way. If you remember Jesus said foxes
- 4:09have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere
- 4:12to lay his head. Jesus never made it about money,
- 4:16friends. He never made his ministry about
- 4:20money. He never worried about it.
- 4:22He talked about money in a way that we should be safeguarded
- 4:27against all the cares of this world.
- 4:30We need to be safeguarded against the love of money.
- 4:35We need to be safeguarded against it.
- 4:38And here you can see the greed that is upon even the Pharisees
- 4:44and the Sadducees and the Sanhedrin.
- 4:46You can see it because Jesus was exposing them.
- 4:51Jesus was threatening their way of life, and they loved the
- 4:55green. They loved the seats of honor.
- 4:59They loved to exact their power over the masses.
- 5:06And you can see it here. It's all culminating in this
- 5:10moment. Let's not miss it, friends, too.
- 5:14And when they had bound him, they led him away and delivered
- 5:17him to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
- 5:20So the Jews did not have the power to execute.
- 5:25They had to give that over to the Roman government here.
- 5:29And they're going to tell Pontius Pilate a bunch of bogus
- 5:33charges, but they were going to 0 in on the ones that they
- 5:39thought were pertinent to Rome. And they're going to try to
- 5:43frame Jesus as some kind of rogue insurrectionist who was
- 5:50threatening Rome. And they were going to frame him
- 5:54in a way that it would look as if he was trying to usurp the
- 5:59authority of Rome, which we know Jesus came and lived a perfect
- 6:07life. We know that Jesus was here to
- 6:10rescue us for all of eternity. He was not so hyper fixated upon
- 6:171 government. He was hyper fixated on the
- 6:22entire world. And think about how we're still
- 6:25talking about Jesus today. We're still trying to
- 6:28marginalized and get rid of Jesus today.
- 6:31He turned the whole world upside down in 33 years. 3 Then Judas,
- 6:38which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, he
- 6:43repented himself and brought again the 30 pieces of silver to
- 6:48the chief priests and the elders.
- 6:51So you need to know that Jesus has already said it would be
- 6:54better for Judas to have never been born.
- 6:56We can see here in verse three that Judas was remorseful of
- 7:05selling a perfect man who had done nothing wrong.
- 7:11But here Judas still had not placed his faith in the Lord
- 7:16Jesus Christ. He just knew that he had done
- 7:19something wrong and he was remorseful of it for saying, I
- 7:28have sinned and that I have betrayed the innocent blood.
- 7:31And they said, what is that to us?
- 7:35See you to that they're saying you deal with that we we have
- 7:40paid you has nothing to do with us now it's all new 5 And he
- 7:47cast down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed and
- 7:51he went and hung himself. Think about that for a second,
- 7:54friends. There is no hope outside of
- 7:59Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is our only hope.
- 8:02Our hope is not in a political party.
- 8:04Our hope is not in the government.
- 8:06Our hope is not in our wealth and finances.
- 8:08Our hope is not in the peace and security.
- 8:11Our hope is not in the gated community.
- 8:13Our hope is not placed in mankind.
- 8:17Our hope is not placed upon ourselves.
- 8:19We're not going to be able to save ourselves, friends.
- 8:23Our hope is in Jesus Christ. And here Judas is a model of
- 8:28what happens when we make it all about this world, when we try to
- 8:33make it about the greed, it just leads to suicide.
- 8:37It just leads to desperation and depression and anxiety.
- 8:41It leads to all the plagues that you see all around you, friends.
- 8:45And Judas is a model of this. And here Judas throws the 30
- 8:50pieces back at them. Because what does it even matter
- 8:54in the end, friends? What does any of it even matter?
- 8:58If you're not right with God, what does any of this even
- 9:03matter? And what you're going to find as
- 9:06time goes on, Francis, These things must happen, but woe to
- 9:10the one whom they come through. What you're going to find as
- 9:13time goes on is what is it profit a man to gain the whole
- 9:18world, but to lose his soul. What you're going to find as
- 9:22time goes on are all these people that you look up to and
- 9:26you think to yourself, wow, what it must be like to live their
- 9:30life. What you're going to find
- 9:32friends is they live in a self-made prison cell and they
- 9:38cannot find any peace. And you should feel sorry for
- 9:44those people. But there are people who live in
- 9:48a tin house on the dirt floor that have more joy than most of
- 9:56the wealthy people that you'll ever meet that you aspire to be
- 10:00like. And that is factual friends.
- 10:06And here you can see Judas went and hung himself because there
- 10:10is no peace outside of God Almighty and he had betrayed God
- 10:17almighty. 6 The chief priest took the silver pieces and said
- 10:23it's not lawful for to put them in the treasury because it is
- 10:27the price of blood. Think about that for a second.
- 10:31They had not even relegated, they had not even put together
- 10:34the pieces that Jesus is God and that this was a time that we
- 10:41would still be talking about to this day.
- 10:44They had not even thought about it.
- 10:46All they were thinking about was the legal ramifications of
- 10:51everything. They were not looking at it from
- 10:54the altitude that you and I have from the full counsel of God's
- 10:59Word. Just think about it. 7 And they
- 11:05took counsel and bought with them the Potter's field to bury
- 11:11strangers in. And this was prophesied about.
- 11:14And we know that this field Zechariah talked about, and we
- 11:21can see that it is going to be ascribed to Jeremiah.
- 11:25There's no discrepancy here that Jeremiah had talked about it and
- 11:33that Zechariah had pinned it down.
- 11:36And we can see that it is all made congruent and beautiful.
- 11:43And we can see here, this Potter's field would have been
- 11:46the place where the Potter after making his pottery, if there
- 11:55were things that did not turn out after they were dried, if
- 12:01they didn't turn out in the way that he had desired and he
- 12:04didn't want to put a stamp of approval on, he was crushing
- 12:08that pottery and throwing it in this field.
- 12:12And it was a good for nothing field.
- 12:15And here you can see how the religious folk bought this field
- 12:20with the 30 pieces of silver that our Lord was bought with.
- 12:27He was betrayed with the price of a slave.
- 12:30And you can see it here. And how amazing is this word of
- 12:35God that we hold in our hands that 400 plus years from this
- 12:40moment it was all prophesied about.
- 12:42And you can see it living out and actually being fleshed out
- 12:46here. This is an amazing book,
- 12:49friends. This is an amazing book that can
- 12:53foretell the things that are to come.
- 12:56And there is no other publication.
- 12:58There is no other literature on planet Earth that has the track
- 13:03record of being able to predict itself to the exact degree that
- 13:09the Bible does. And if it has done it in the
- 13:12past, we can bet our bottom dollar that is going to do it in
- 13:17the future. Friends, all of the prophecies
- 13:21that are contained in this book, This is not to tickle the ears
- 13:26of the curious, friends. This is for our edification.
- 13:33We can trust that God's word is true.
- 13:37We can trust in it, friends. We do not need to look for
- 13:43discrepancies. We didn't.
- 13:44We do not need to look and see if there are things in here that
- 13:50don't mix. We need to just trust it,
- 13:52friends. And that's not blind faith.
- 13:55That's not us just being gullible, that is US believing
- 14:00that God Almighty is who He says He is and that we do not need to
- 14:05call any of it into question. We need to just trust that it's
- 14:08all going to work out in the end and that God is the one who is
- 14:14steering all of it into our future, our hope and our glory.
- 14:20Friends, they bought the the Potter's Field with the 30
- 14:27pieces. 8 Wherefore that field was called the field of blood
- 14:34unto this day. So you can see, as Matthew is
- 14:37pinning these words, they had started to call that field the
- 14:41Potter's field, the field of blood. 9 Then was fulfilled that
- 14:49which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet saying, and they took
- 14:53the 30 pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued,
- 14:58whom they of the children of Israel did value, 10 and gave
- 15:04them for the Potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.
- 15:08God knew all of this was going to happen before it ever
- 15:11happened. Don't miss it.
- 15:14God predicted all these things to the exact measure that they
- 15:18all happen. Don't miss it.
- 15:20We can trust that this word is alive and active and sharper
- 15:24than any 2 edged sword. And it's reading you, it's
- 15:27discerning you today friend. 11 And Jesus stood before the
- 15:33governor, and the governor asked him, saying, Are you the king of
- 15:36the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, You say
- 15:40it. Old Pontius Pilate went down in
- 15:46history as the man who allowed the Messiah to be murdered.
- 15:53We're going to see here this dialogue.
- 15:55And what you need to know is old Pontius Pilate here.
- 15:59He was taken aback by how Jesus was so calm and cool and
- 16:08collective under pressure, and Pontius Pilate had the authority
- 16:14to release him. He did not have to kill him.
- 16:18The Jews had no way of being able to carry out the death
- 16:24sentence upon Jesus. They needed Pontius Pilate, they
- 16:29needed Rome to do their dirty work.
- 16:32And here you're going to see this dialogue between a very,
- 16:38very hostile man who cared nothing for human life and
- 16:43disregarded any kind of sympathy.
- 16:47And here you're going to see the King of kings and the Lord of
- 16:51Lord, who gives all man any kind of authority.
- 16:56There's no authority that has been given to mankind but that
- 17:00which is given by God Almighty. And He allows it and He allows
- 17:05it for a season and for a time, and it all works out for the
- 17:10good of those who love God and who are called according to his
- 17:14purposes. Everything's working out exactly
- 17:16the way that it's supposed to. And here you're going to see
- 17:20Pontius Pilate completely unravelled and acting, acting in
- 17:27a way that is not like himself. He's going to be going back and
- 17:35forth in his mind of why in the world is this prisoner not
- 17:40behaving in the way of all the other prisoners that I've ever
- 17:43examined. And you're going to see him
- 17:45having to wrestle through all of those emotions and thoughts.
- 17:50Let's dive in. He said, Jesus said, you say it.
- 17:5512 And when he was accused of the chief priests and the
- 17:58elders, he answered nothing. He was the silent sheep led to
- 18:04the slaughter. He was silent before his
- 18:07shearers, Friends. He said nothing.
- 18:11Jesus said nothing. 13 Then said Pilate unto him, Do you not hear
- 18:17how many things these they witness against you?
- 18:20They're saying, Do you not hear all these charges that they're
- 18:22trying to frame you with? And here Pilate is starting to
- 18:27figure it out. Friends. 14 And he answered him
- 18:32to never a word, and so much that the governor marveled
- 18:35greatly. There it is.
- 18:37You can see how Pontius Pilate was marveling at the meekness of
- 18:44Jesus Christ. You can see here how Pontius
- 18:47Pilate could not believe his eyes and ears of how this man
- 18:54who had done nothing wrong was not trying to get out of
- 18:58anything. He sat silent before his
- 19:01shearers. Think about it. 15 Now at that
- 19:09feast the governor was won't to release unto the people a
- 19:13prisoner whom they would. So it was tradition that at the
- 19:18feast, Pontius Pilate would ask them what prisoner they would
- 19:25like for him to release. He had that power, friends.
- 19:29He could release anybody that he wanted to.
- 19:33He could condemn anybody that he wanted to.
- 19:37So here he is trying to figure out a way to release this
- 19:41innocent man who had done nothing wrong, who had lived a
- 19:44sinless, perfect life, and who was wrongfully accused and
- 19:49wrongfully arrested and wrongfully beaten.
- 19:54And you can see he's been spat upon here.
- 19:58And Pontius Pilate is trying to figure out how to release this
- 20:02man. 16 And they had then a notable prisoner called
- 20:12Barabbas. So Barabbas is a type of us
- 20:17sinners. Barabbas is like you friend.
- 20:23And here Jesus is going to die in his stead, just like he did
- 20:27for you, friend. Here you can see in this
- 20:30dialogue that Pontius Pilate went and chose the most
- 20:36despicable, disgusting human being in the prison cell, all
- 20:42Barabbas, and he put him up against the most perfect person
- 20:50who has ever lived, the only person who has ever lived a
- 20:55perfect life, Jesus Christ. And he puts the two side by
- 21:00side. And think about how this is a
- 21:04model of you, friend. You are the most despicable in
- 21:09comparison to Jesus Christ. There is no way that you could
- 21:13ever behave your way into heaven.
- 21:15And it is modeled here in this moment.
- 21:17Don't miss it. 17 Therefore when they were gathered together,
- 21:23Pilate said unto them, Whom will you that I release unto you,
- 21:27Barabbas, or Jesus, which is called Christ?
- 21:32So this Christ is the anointed one.
- 21:34This Christ, He's showing them that he is their long-awaited
- 21:39Messiah. He is the King of the Jews.
- 21:42He is the Christ the anointed. 1 And he puts them up against this
- 21:49murderer, he puts them up against this insurrectionist, he
- 21:54puts them up against this despicable, disgusting,
- 21:58deplorable human being, Barabbas.
- 22:03And he puts them side by side and says, Who would you want me
- 22:07to release? And he knew the answer.
- 22:09The answer of course, would have been give us.
- 22:13Jesus put that murderer back where he belongs, in the prison
- 22:19cell to be killed. And there's a lot of speculation
- 22:24that that third cross on the day that they hung those other two
- 22:28thieves side by side of Jesus, that that third cross that Jesus
- 22:32hung on was supposed to be Barabbas's.
- 22:37There's a lot of speculation in that camp.
- 22:39And so we can see here that Barabbas would have known that
- 22:45Jesus died in his stead. 18 And you can see it all playing out
- 22:53here. Listen to 18.
- 22:54For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
- 22:59So here Pontius Pilate had figured the whole thing out.
- 23:02He was a smart enough and an intelligent man to hold the
- 23:06office that he had there. And he had so much power, he
- 23:12within his own self, he acted as the entire counsel and he could
- 23:20make decisions on the fly. And you can see here how he
- 23:25thought for sure they would release Jesus because they had
- 23:30only delivered him up out of envy.
- 23:33And he was trying to play the game of putting the most
- 23:37despicable murderer that they had in view of the people.
- 23:44But things didn't go out because they were all delusional.
- 23:47They didn't go the way that Pontius Pilate hoped that they
- 23:51would. 19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife
- 24:01sent unto him, saying, Have you nothing to do with that?
- 24:06Just man? For I've suffered many things
- 24:09this day in a dream because of him.
- 24:12Can you imagine Pontius Pilate's wife being disturbed by a dream?
- 24:19Here you can see a Gentile who's receiving divine counsel.
- 24:25And there was so much going on in this moment.
- 24:30The crowds were shouting out here Pontius marveling at Jesus,
- 24:36and here you see Barabbas being brought out and standing side by
- 24:40side next to Jesus. And here comes Pontius's wife
- 24:47trying to get him to see that he is acting unjustly towards an
- 24:52innocent man. And she has received a dream
- 24:56that has told her that he's innocent.
- 25:00And here Pontius Pilate has to make a very hard decision.
- 25:05He cannot have a riot on his hands or he will be deposed.
- 25:08He cannot have a riot on his hands because then he will lose
- 25:13his position in his life. And here you can see that he's
- 25:17in between a rock and a hard place, and his wife is telling
- 25:21him don't have anything to do with this innocent man. 20 But
- 25:29the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitude that
- 25:32they should ask Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
- 25:36Imagine that here these chief priests and the elders are going
- 25:42through the crowd. The same crowd that cried out
- 25:44Hosanna, the same crowd that was hoping for a Liberator.
- 25:48The same crowd is going to cry out, crucify him, and look at
- 25:52how they're stirring amongst the crowd.
- 25:55Ask for Barabbas, ask for Barabbas, have Jesus crucified.
- 25:59Look at this. Look at how it all is playing
- 26:02out. And it is exactly the way that
- 26:05it was supposed to go, but God used it without excusing them.
- 26:11So Pontius Pilate doesn't get a pass.
- 26:13Judas doesn't get a pass. The chief priests and the elders
- 26:17don't get a pass. The people in the crowd don't
- 26:20get a pass. It's just exposing the sin that
- 26:23is within us, friends, and apart from Jesus Christ, there is no
- 26:28covering of our sins. We need the blood of Jesus to
- 26:31cover us from the top of our heads to the bottom of our feet,
- 26:35our palms, our faces and back. We need Jesus's blood friends
- 26:39covering us all the way, and we will only enter into the Kingdom
- 26:45of God through that blood. And here you can see that they
- 26:50were being exposed for all of their sinfulness, and they sure
- 26:54looked the part on the outside. And what are they going to say?
- 27:0721 The governor answered, and said unto them, Which of the two
- 27:14will you that I release unto you?
- 27:16And they said, Barabbas, how despicable. 22 Pilots said unto
- 27:23them, What shall I do then with Jesus, which is called Christ?
- 27:29And they all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
- 27:33What a disgusting response. There was other ways to die.
- 27:41This would have been the capital punishment that was unspeakable
- 27:47in modest crowds. This would have been things that
- 27:53people in the affluent society would not even speak of because
- 27:58it was so degrading, this form of torture before death.
- 28:06And this was only relegated to the most heinous crimes.
- 28:12And here Jesus is marked with sinners and thieves.
- 28:18He's marked with humanity as a whole.
- 28:23And you could see how he identified himself with mankind
- 28:28in this crucifixion. 24 When Pilate saw that he could
- 28:33prevail, nothing but that rather a tumult was made.
- 28:37He took water and he washed his hands before the multitude,
- 28:40saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person.
- 28:45See you to it. See, He didn't get to make that
- 28:47call. Pontius Pilate doesn't get to
- 28:50wash off the guilt of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only
- 28:57begotten here. Conscience is still guilty of
- 29:03condemning the Son of God to death.
- 29:09Only God can forgive our sins. 25 And then answered all the
- 29:16people and said, his blood be on us and on our children.
- 29:20They're saying, look, the guilt of all of this crime, let it
- 29:25fall on us. And we can see that being
- 29:27fleshed out in 8070 when God destroyed the temple, when God
- 29:32destroyed and dispersed the Jews.
- 29:35You can see it. You can see how they didn't even
- 29:38realize what they were saying in this moment.
- 29:42And it is only by the blood of Christ that we enter in. 26 Then
- 29:46released he Barabbas unto them. And when he had scourged Jesus,
- 29:53he delivered him to be crucified.
- 29:56What a small little verse that encapsulates such a brutality
- 30:01moment. This cat of nine tails that had
- 30:04pieces of bone and shards of glass interwoven into the
- 30:08leather braids. And it was a whip that had 9
- 30:13braided cords attached to it. And it had fragmentations of
- 30:18sharp objects that were designed to RIP open the flesh and to
- 30:25expose the nerve endings. And it was a brutal lashing of
- 30:3339 lashes. And you can see how it was meant
- 30:38to send the criminal into shock. There's so much here in this one
- 30:43little verse, this scourging, friends.
- 30:46It is not even to be mentioned much more in the Bible than just
- 30:50this, this ripping open of the Savior's body, friends.
- 30:56And how much power was in the blood being spilled upon the
- 30:59ground, friends? And it was for you and it was
- 31:01for me. And Isaiah said that he didn't
- 31:04even resemble a man after this scourging and they delivered him
- 31:11to be crucified. This was much more than just
- 31:14being nailed to a cross. This was this asphyxiation from
- 31:18the bodily fluids within his self.
- 31:21There's so much medical advice that has been written on what is
- 31:28happening in this moment of this scourging and crucifixion.
- 31:32Friends. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the
- 31:40common hall and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
- 31:44So this was after he had been scourged, Friends.
- 31:48And he's standing there and they strip him, and they put on him a
- 31:51scarlet robe, and they platted the crown of thorns, and they
- 31:56put it upon his head, and a Reed in his right hand.
- 31:59And they bowed the knee before him and mocked him, saying, Hail
- 32:03King of the Jews. This is a mocking of the Lord
- 32:06Jesus Christ. And it's no different in our day
- 32:09and hour. And look at how many people they
- 32:11make fun and they poke fun at Jesus, who is the only one who
- 32:17can save them of their sins. And look at the long-suffering
- 32:20of God, how he allows so much of this mocking to go on when he
- 32:25could take the very breath out of your lungs, when He could
- 32:28stop the very heart inside your chest.
- 32:30And he allows these mockers to go on.
- 32:33He allows them to wake up another day.
- 32:35He allows them to see creation. He allows them to taste just a
- 32:40piece of heaven on this earth. He allows them to keep going on
- 32:44in their lives and he allows allows them to amass the money
- 32:47and he allows them to continue to make link after link after
- 32:51link on the chains that wrap around them, that asphyxiate and
- 32:56the ones that destroy them and their noose that their own
- 32:59making makes where they hang themselves on friends.
- 33:02He allows them to keep going on and on.
- 33:06He allows this mocking to keep happening day after day after
- 33:10day in the media, day after day after day in the highest
- 33:14offices, day after day after today in the school rooms, day
- 33:18after day after day inside of people's houses and on their
- 33:22social media platforms, day after day after day.
- 33:26This mocking of Jesus that he allows friends, far be it from
- 33:31us, to mock the King of kings and the Lord of Lords.
- 33:34And there will come a day, friends, where every knee will
- 33:38bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. 30
- 33:48And they spat upon him, and they took the wreath, and they struck
- 33:52him on the head. And after that they had mocked
- 33:55him, they took the robe off of him, and they put on his own
- 33:59clothing on him, and they led him away to crucify him.
- 34:05So they had beat him beyond recognition, and then they dress
- 34:09him up and then they mock him, friends, and then they lead him
- 34:16away to crucify him. 32 And as they came out, they found a man
- 34:22of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear his
- 34:27cross. So Jesus was so weak, and he was
- 34:30losing so much blood. He was losing consciousness.
- 34:34He had was going in and out here and he can't even carry this
- 34:39crossbeam that weighed anywhere between 100 to 120 lbs here.
- 34:46And he's he is trying to carry it and he is falling down.
- 34:51And here they say, hey, go grab that man who was there from a
- 34:59different land. And here they grab hold of Simon
- 35:04and they make him carry Jesus's cross being 33.
- 35:12And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is
- 35:17to say a place of skull 34, they gave him vinegar to drink
- 35:21mingled with gall, and we had tasted thereof.
- 35:24He would not drink. We know that Jesus was thirsty,
- 35:28but they were trying to give him an intoxicating drink to numb
- 35:32the pain. This would have been some kind
- 35:35of narcotic and Jesus refused it because he wanted to have all of
- 35:40his senses aware of what was happening and what was going on.
- 35:43He did not want to be intoxicated. 35 And they
- 35:49crucified him and parted his garments, casting lots, that it
- 35:53might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet.
- 35:56They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did
- 35:59they cast lots. So we know this was all
- 36:02prophesied about. There was nothing missed on
- 36:04Jesus. He knew what he was doing and he
- 36:06knew exactly what was happening, and He knew that all this was
- 36:09going to happen. This is no surprise to him.
- 36:12But the disciples, He had told so many times what was going to
- 36:16happen, and they missed it and missed it and missed, missed it.
- 36:1936 And sitting down, they watched him there.
- 36:23So they were going to make sure that the disciples didn't come
- 36:25and try to steal him off of the cross. 37 And and set up over
- 36:31his head his accusation. This is Jesus, the King of the
- 36:35Jews. Imagine that they were speaking
- 36:38truth in this moment, but it was meant to be some kind of
- 36:41mockery. 38 Then were there 2 thieves crucified with him, one
- 36:46on the right hand and one on the left.
- 36:48So we know that one of these thieves were the one that
- 36:52entered into paradise with Jesus. 39 and they passed by,
- 36:57reviled him, wagging their heads. 40 and saying, you that
- 37:01destroyed the temple and buildest it in three days, save
- 37:04yourself, if you be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
- 37:08So here they're mocking him. The Jews here are saying, look,
- 37:12he said that you were going to destroy the temple and rebuild
- 37:16it. Let's see you do it.
- 37:18Let's see you come down off that cross. 41 Likewise also the
- 37:22chief priest mocked him with the scribes and the elders and said,
- 37:2642 He saved others himself. He cannot save if he be the King
- 37:31of Israel. Let him come down from the cross
- 37:34and we will believe him. How despicable is this?
- 37:37They were trying to say, if you come down off the cross, then
- 37:40we'll believe. You see, this is what happens
- 37:43with us and mankind. This is what happens whenever we
- 37:46test God in attempt to God. And we say if there is even a
- 37:50God, then we don't care how he acts, just let him act.
- 37:54Let him show us that he's real. And we mock him just to try to
- 37:59get some kind of negative attention from him.
- 38:01And when God in his long-suffering stays silent, we
- 38:06turn away, and we care nothing for God, but he loves us so
- 38:11much. 43 He trusted in God, let him deliver him now if he will
- 38:18save him. For he said, I am the Son of
- 38:20God. Again this blasphemy.
- 38:23He was accused. Jesus was accused of blasphemy.
- 38:26The whole reason they got him over to Pontius Pilate is
- 38:30because they accused him of blasphemy.
- 38:33And then here they are the ones committing blasphemy. 44 The
- 38:39thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the
- 38:42same in his teeth. So we know that one of these
- 38:45repented. One of these saw that he was the
- 38:48Son of God. 45 Now from the 6th hour there was darkness over all
- 38:54the land unto the 9th hour. So we can see this wasn't some
- 38:58kind of eclipse. This was creation groaning.
- 39:02This was creation morning over what was happening to their
- 39:06Creator. 46 And about the 9th hour Jesus cried out with a loud
- 39:11voice saying, Ella, ella lava Sabatani, that is to say, My
- 39:17God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 39:20He had this beautiful communion with God since the beginning,
- 39:24and here it was broken, because all of the sins of mankind was
- 39:28placed on him. 47 Some of them that stood there, when they
- 39:34heard it, they said, This man is calling for Elijah. 48 And
- 39:38straight way one of them ran and took a sponge and filled it with
- 39:41vinegar to put it on a Reed, and gave him to drink. 49 The rest
- 39:48said, Let me let us see whether Elijah will come and save him.
- 39:52So here they still had not believed on him as their
- 39:55Messiah. They had not put the pieces of
- 39:58the puzzle together. They were trying to see if the
- 40:01prophecy of Malachi was going to come true, if Jesus was just the
- 40:06forerunner for Elijah, because in Malachi it says that Elijah
- 40:10will come. And here, if they were listening
- 40:13to the words of Jesus, he said that Elijah had already come in.
- 40:16In the office of John the Baptist.
- 40:19And we know also that Elijah is going to come as one of the two
- 40:22witnesses in the end times in the Tribulation. 50 Jesus, when
- 40:30he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
- 40:33No one took it from him. He laid it down in his own
- 40:37accord. Friends, He gave up the ghost.
- 40:41They did not take it from him. 51 And behold, the veil of the
- 40:45temple was ripped into from the top to the bottom, and the earth
- 40:50did quake, and the rocks rent. So we can see that the veil that
- 40:55separated the holiest of holy places was ripped from top to
- 40:59bottom. No human could have ever done
- 41:02that. It was ripped by divine council
- 41:07and it was meant to show us that we have access, friends, through
- 41:12the blood of Jesus Christ, through the sacrifice of Jesus
- 41:15Christ, through the atonement of Jesus Christ.
- 41:18That we can be holy because He is holy.
- 41:21And we can enter into the holiest of holy places.
- 41:24And we can pray and we can stand, and we can gird up our
- 41:27loins, and we can come into the throne room boldly, friends,
- 41:33because of this sacrifice of Jesus Christ. 52 And the graves
- 41:40were opened, and many, many bodies of the Saints, which
- 41:43slept a rose. This was the sheave offering,
- 41:47this was the wave offering. Jesus was showing God.
- 41:52He says, look, it is finished, it is done.
- 41:58What an amazing moment this is. This is the culmination of all
- 42:03of history. Everything before pointed to
- 42:06this moment, and everything after points back to this
- 42:09moment. Friends, don't miss it. 53 And
- 42:15came out of the graves after his resurrection, after his
- 42:19resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto
- 42:23many, praise the Lord. Can you imagine the bodies of
- 42:27the Saints which slept? And they were rising up out of
- 42:31their graves? And they're going and appearing
- 42:34unto many, praise God. 54 Now when the centurion that was
- 42:40there with him, watching Jesus saw the earthquake and those
- 42:44that were done, they feared greatly, saying truly this was
- 42:49the Son of God. No, this is the Son of God,
- 42:52friend. This would have been one of the
- 42:54same who was just mocking him. And now through all of these
- 43:01events, he sees that Jesus is the Son of God. 55 And many
- 43:07women were there, beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from
- 43:10Galilee, ministering unto him, 56 among which was Mary Magladin
- 43:16and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of
- 43:19Zebedee. Children.
- 43:21It would have been Salome. And all these women, they
- 43:24actually got it right. Here his disciples had fled.
- 43:28Here He scattered the sheep when the shepherd was struck.
- 43:32And they're all in hiding and shaking because they see that
- 43:36their rabbi had been murdered. And they hadn't even really
- 43:41hearkened to all the times that he had told them that he was
- 43:44going to rise again. But look at how the women, the
- 43:47women stuck by him. Friends 57 When the evening was
- 43:52come, there was a rich man of Arimathea named Joseph, who also
- 43:56himself, which was Jesus's disciple.
- 43:59He was Incognito. He was part of the religious
- 44:03folk there, but he was a true follower of Jesus Christ.
- 44:07So you can see that it's not all hypocrisy within the religious
- 44:13people. There are some, but there are
- 44:16few who actually understand it. All friends, and are not just in
- 44:20it for their own profit and gain.
- 44:22And here you can also see a man who is not controlled by his
- 44:26possessions. Look at how few and far between
- 44:29this is. But it is possible, friends. 58
- 44:32He went to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus.
- 44:36Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
- 44:38Look at how he had sway, friends. 59 And when Joseph had
- 44:43taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. 60 He laid
- 44:47it in his own new tomb, which had cut out in the rock, and he
- 44:51rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre and departed.
- 44:55So this rock would have been in a groove, friend, and it would
- 44:59have been impossible for just one person to be able to roll it
- 45:03back. It would have been impossible
- 45:05for these three women to roll it back.
- 45:07It would have taken many strong men to be able to roll this
- 45:11massive stone through that groove, friend, and it was meant
- 45:16to keep the person in there that was not easily moved back and
- 45:21forth. 61 And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary
- 45:30sitting over against the sepulchre. 62 Now the next day
- 45:36that followed, the day of the preparation, the chief priests
- 45:39and the Pharisees came together unto Pilate. 63 Saying, Sir, we
- 45:44remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive,
- 45:48after three days I will rise again. 64 Command therefore,
- 45:53that the sepulcher be made sure until the 3rd day, lest his
- 45:57disciples come by night and steal him away, and say unto the
- 46:01people, He is risen from the dead.
- 46:03So the last error shall be worse than the first.
- 46:06Look at how these chief priests look at how they actually
- 46:10remember Jesus's words more than his own disciples.
- 46:15Think about that for just a second.
- 46:16In our day, in our hour, how many of us are ignorant to the
- 46:20word of God, who call ourselves believers and disciples of
- 46:24Jesus, but we're ignorant of the word of God?
- 46:27But the world out there, they're studying this word and they're
- 46:31not even believers, and they're studying it in a way to try to
- 46:35figure out how to sidestep and get around all of these
- 46:40prophecies. Go and read Psalms 2 that the
- 46:43nations are raging and they're going to try to throw off the
- 46:47shackles of religion. And you can see it all shaping
- 46:50up in our day and our hour. The enemy knows this word.
- 46:54All the way back in the garden. He knew the word and he tries to
- 46:57twist the words. Whenever Jesus was led out into
- 47:00the wilderness, he knew the word and he quoted the word.
- 47:03And we need to be students of the Word of God.
- 47:07This is the way that we are able to safeguard ourselves against
- 47:11the schemes of the enemy. Friends, you cannot just show up
- 47:14to church once a week. You cannot just throw on a
- 47:17podcast that you listen to to try to get fed.
- 47:20We need to be in this word, friends, for ourselves.
- 47:23Own this word for ourselves, friends.
- 47:26That is the way that we understand when the counterfeit
- 47:30comes across the table. 65 Pilot said unto them.
- 47:36You have a watch, go your way. Make it as sure as you can.
- 47:42So this would have been a rope that would have been waxed on
- 47:46each side, and it would have been sealed with the Roman
- 47:51authority, the Roman Empire, the entire authority of the Roman
- 47:57Empire would have been sealed upon this throne.
- 48:01And what they did by way, they actually authenticated Christ's
- 48:06resurrection by way of trying to make sure that it didn't happen.
- 48:13It makes it to where you and I can be sure that we know that we
- 48:17know that we know that we know, historically speaking, we know
- 48:21that we know that we know that we know that Jesus Christ
- 48:25resurrected from the dead. Friends, this is not some cool
- 48:30story. This is not some fable.
- 48:35This is not some storybook. This is the authority of God's
- 48:41Word. This is the spoken Word of God.
- 48:45And we can trust that it is true.
- 48:48We can trust that we can bank on it.
- 48:53We can bet our bottom dollar on it, friends.
- 48:57And here look at how Rome made it to where you and I can have
- 49:03the hope of glory. Look at how Rome and the Romans
- 49:10and all the empire made it to where when we read this, we can
- 49:14be sure because they put this seal on it.
- 49:19And there was no way that his disciples could have come and
- 49:24stole the body. There is no way that the Jews,
- 49:28whenever all of the new church was springing up that they would
- 49:33not have presented his body if they had stolen it.
- 49:37We can see and we can know and we can trust.
- 49:40There is no grave for Jesus Christ.
- 49:42You can't go to Jesus Christ grave today because we serve a
- 49:47God that is alive. We serve a Savior that is alive
- 49:53and active, friends and I pray that he's active in your life.
- 49:58We'll end on 66. So they went and made the
- 50:02sepulchre, sealing the stone and setting a watch.
- 50:08This watch would have been made-up of four soldiers, and
- 50:13two of them would have slept and the other two would have stayed
- 50:15awake, and their lives depended upon it.
- 50:19Friends, it was only by divine counsel.
- 50:25It was only by divine intervention that all of these
- 50:31things were happening, and they prove our faith.
- 50:35Friends, all of this proves that we're not being duped and it is
- 50:40trustworthy and true. What an amazing chapter in the
- 50:46Bible. I hope you've been blessed by
- 50:48it. I know I sure have many times.
- 50:51I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 50:52I love you. We'll see you back here
- 50:56tomorrow. God bless you.
