- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, y'all, welcome to another episode of Eating Wall Broke.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm your host, Coneen Witt, and today we haven't legend
- 0:06Speaker 1: in the building. Let the lord user tell the legend.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I literally d M called Bragg to all the friends,
- 0:14Speaker 1: all the comics that I knew, and was like, Yo,
- 0:16Speaker 1: you'll never guess who I have. I have earthquake in
- 0:19Speaker 1: the building. That's it, and I'm glad to be earthquake.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I'm telling you, I enjoy your comedy. I just enjoy
- 0:26Speaker 1: it is great. I laugh out loud, which not a
- 0:28Speaker 1: lot of comics can do for me. We're very few, kid,
- 0:31Speaker 1: but we won't. We won't say no names. No, we won't.
- 0:35Speaker 1: We won't. And I'm a critic problem. Um, so what
- 1:00Speaker 1: do you have us eating today? Well, I'm ready to
- 1:03Speaker 1: give you one of my legendary mills and it is
- 1:05Speaker 1: called the grilled cheese sandwich. You understand real cheese? Is it? Uh?
- 1:10Speaker 1: Had it when I was broke. I'm eating it down
- 1:13Speaker 1: that I'm rich, um two weeks ago for real? Yes,
- 1:19Speaker 1: you're like, okay, grilled cheese, go deep. Now are you
- 1:25Speaker 1: on those people that put the butter on the bread
- 1:27Speaker 1: directly or on the pan? No? I put it on
- 1:30Speaker 1: the bread, you spread it across the bread, and you
- 1:34Speaker 1: make sure. See when when I was broke, you know,
- 1:37Speaker 1: I didn't have individual slices of cheese like that government cheese.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Had to have a knife a jackhammer to get it off.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And it took like this playing right here. This ain't
- 1:49Speaker 1: gonna do it nine thousand degrees to milk it, you know,
- 1:53Speaker 1: to get it to milt. You know, I'm fresh on it.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But now I have money, you know, I see you
- 1:57Speaker 1: got the individual slice of cheese, the American cheese. Do
- 2:01Speaker 1: you still eat American cheese or do you get the
- 2:03Speaker 1: real cheese down? No, I eat that. I don't like
- 2:05Speaker 1: the real cheese. I didn't know that wasn't real cheese.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So please do not tell me that's not real cheese.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I just found that out when I was pregnant. Well,
- 2:11Speaker 1: please don't tell me it's real cheese. To me, Me
- 2:14Speaker 1: and that cheese ain't never had no problems. We ain't
- 2:17Speaker 1: gonna have no problem out to leave in your show. Okay, okay,
- 2:20Speaker 1: why don't you get started making the classic of all classics? Well,
- 2:25Speaker 1: first thing you have to do when you're doing you
- 2:27Speaker 1: got to get the bread right there. And you lay
- 2:30Speaker 1: it on there. You get this head with the buttom
- 2:33Speaker 1: and you have to come on through here and you
- 2:35Speaker 1: have to run it all the way across is evenly. See,
- 2:38Speaker 1: some people just put it right here. Then when you
- 2:40Speaker 1: eat your grilled cheese, you're sitting there, you gotta spack
- 2:43Speaker 1: of butter on there. Cholesterol, hot, blood pressure a lot,
- 2:46Speaker 1: but that's not a lot of people die stroke right there.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So you want to make sure spread it all the
- 2:51Speaker 1: way across, just like if it was mayonnaise when you
- 2:54Speaker 1: go out to restaurants. So you want those people that
- 2:57Speaker 1: you know, you get the butter and you slather it
- 2:59Speaker 1: on the bread when they bring it to the table. No,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I like to do it the same way I'm doing
- 3:03Speaker 1: right here. It's like a woman. You want to make
- 3:05Speaker 1: it even. You know, you put it all over. You
- 3:09Speaker 1: don't want to just give it just a piece of it.
- 3:11Speaker 1: If you wanted to have all of it. That what
- 3:14Speaker 1: I'm doing about. And then you throw this down here
- 3:16Speaker 1: by yourself. You just put it on a pan. Okay,
- 3:22Speaker 1: let me stop back back thinking to mind your business.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Let me get all up in your business. What was
- 3:30Speaker 1: going on at the time when you were eating drilled
- 3:32Speaker 1: cheese sandwiches because you had to. At what point in
- 3:36Speaker 1: my life when I was young my mother didn't cook?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Is it this one? O? Um? I see I was.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I was staying out your business. You wasn't. You just
- 3:47Speaker 1: had to tell me I turn on the wrong eye
- 3:49Speaker 1: and I would took you to rest. Um. Younger life
- 3:54Speaker 1: when I ate girl cheese is my mother worked a lot.
- 3:56Speaker 1: So this was the only dish that I could cook
- 3:59Speaker 1: for myself. Now that that in centiment to sliding underneath
- 4:04Speaker 1: the baller put two uh butter on a cinnamon on it. Anyway, Um,
- 4:11Speaker 1: as I got older to eat it quick meal, give
- 4:13Speaker 1: you what you need real good. Don't take the time
- 4:17Speaker 1: now where I'm at now just missing you know it?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Set it off? You know it would be good today.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Grill cheese ya, that's the thing. God damn it. Yeah,
- 4:27Speaker 1: I want a grill cheese sounds So that's how it is.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Do you eat out now a lot? I try not to,
- 4:33Speaker 1: but I do. I say about it three times a week.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I eat out other times. Um eat that all. Now
- 4:41Speaker 1: that you have more money, are you the type that's
- 4:43Speaker 1: like more restrictive with your diet? Because I noticed a
- 4:46Speaker 1: lot of celebrities, they'll they'll switch to vegan or you know, no,
- 4:52Speaker 1: I think I believe in moderation. I think anything of
- 4:55Speaker 1: too much is bad for you. I don't eat any fries,
- 5:00Speaker 1: fried food, any of it. Um. I try to stay
- 5:03Speaker 1: away from that. If I do it occasionally, here fry
- 5:06Speaker 1: here there, um bake everything and fish. I'm sorry. Yeah,
- 5:12Speaker 1: everything is baked as much as possible. Fry, fry, fry
- 5:17Speaker 1: and food. It's not good for you, especially man can't
- 5:19Speaker 1: keep this kind of complexion, you know, all that fried chicken.
- 5:24Speaker 1: As a comic, do you feel like there's pressure on image? No,
- 5:28Speaker 1: I don't. I think you're juice. Your jokes is the
- 5:31Speaker 1: number one UM product that you have. I mean, if
- 5:35Speaker 1: you stay funny, then whatever rapid come out don't matter,
- 5:40Speaker 1: you know what I mean? So you know, I mean
- 5:42Speaker 1: you look, you see obese comics that made it, such
- 5:46Speaker 1: as John Canny. You can be good looking, the d raised,
- 5:51Speaker 1: the beyond, I mean Bell Bellamy, those good looking brothers,
- 5:58Speaker 1: the average looking brothers such as myself, Cam the rest
- 6:01Speaker 1: of us. You know, that's kind of brother. So it
- 6:03Speaker 1: doesn't really matter. You know, Kevin is the most in
- 6:06Speaker 1: shape coming that we have, right now he's very physical,
- 6:11Speaker 1: um conscious, Well you know, brothers, you know, so it
- 6:14Speaker 1: is what it is. Our majority of your fans and
- 6:17Speaker 1: women are I believe they are black women. My favorite
- 6:21Speaker 1: thing God has ever put on this earth. I think
- 6:23Speaker 1: women are my number one and perily black women. I
- 6:27Speaker 1: really write my jokes to them. Yeah, quite honest with
- 6:31Speaker 1: So when you first got your start, so you you
- 6:33Speaker 1: you grew up in in I would say you're saying
- 6:37Speaker 1: like a low income household four right, We weren't pour
- 6:41Speaker 1: We just I had a mother and father which you
- 6:44Speaker 1: know raised man. We was right now you will say
- 6:47Speaker 1: lower middle class. You know what I mean. We never
- 6:51Speaker 1: missed for anything or um wanted anything. But we had
- 6:56Speaker 1: to planet. But no spontaneous ship like it's going vacation
- 6:59Speaker 1: at save up for it, that type of thing. See
- 7:02Speaker 1: what you're looking for now and let it brown a
- 7:04Speaker 1: little bits it brown right there, put the cheese on
- 7:08Speaker 1: top of it, butter the other one on there. Didn't
- 7:12Speaker 1: put that pressure on that. So why comedy, Like what
- 7:16Speaker 1: was going on where you transitioned to comedy or was
- 7:19Speaker 1: it like a couple of pivots and landing into comedy. No.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I was in the military for nine years, and I
- 7:26Speaker 1: wanted to do twenty years. But the war broke out
- 7:30Speaker 1: and I was like, man, I on mined on mind
- 7:34Speaker 1: practicing for war, but you'll talk about fighting for real.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I ain't your real soldier. You need to joined this
- 7:40Speaker 1: to get out of my motherhouse. Becauld have stayed and
- 7:43Speaker 1: they see to get shot at. So I had to
- 7:45Speaker 1: make a decision, you know, his true story. And I
- 7:50Speaker 1: turn on CNN. I remember like it was yesterday. And
- 7:52Speaker 1: you know how they always do the pole where is
- 7:55Speaker 1: the best city for black men to be for the best,
- 7:59Speaker 1: you know, the those opportunities for him to prosper in
- 8:03Speaker 1: the corporate world and anything, And they say Atlanta, Georgia.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And I've never been Atlanta, Georgia. I say that's where
- 8:09Speaker 1: I'm going. So I got three of my friends who
- 8:11Speaker 1: also did mony fight in the war, say, man, we're
- 8:13Speaker 1: going to Atlanta. And we moved to Atlanta, all four
- 8:17Speaker 1: of us, and shared the two bad room apartment and
- 8:21Speaker 1: each one of them went to find different jobs. And
- 8:25Speaker 1: I went out and tried comedy while I was still
- 8:27Speaker 1: collecting my unemployment from on Sam And uh, when did
- 8:33Speaker 1: you actually get that inkling that you wanted to do?
- 8:35Speaker 1: It though it was deep. See I'm not and see
- 8:40Speaker 1: for me, I don't make plans and stuff. So it
- 8:42Speaker 1: wasn't no epiphany this is what I want to do.
- 8:46Speaker 1: It was more of this is the best decision. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: tell young people all ain't I don't get the pressure
- 8:52Speaker 1: of what you should do, just put down what you
- 8:54Speaker 1: shouldn't do. I knew what I wasn't gonna do. I
- 8:56Speaker 1: an't gonna go to jail. I ain't gonna see I
- 8:58Speaker 1: no sell No, I wasn't gonna do this. Now everything
- 9:03Speaker 1: is open. So to get to answer your question is
- 9:07Speaker 1: comedy was the best decision that day, and a better
- 9:10Speaker 1: decision hasn't came this way. So it ended up being
- 9:13Speaker 1: my destiny or would you say your destiny my destiny?
- 9:18Speaker 1: When you're that as talent as you are, Well, I
- 9:22Speaker 1: guess what's the difference between purpose and destiny? Because I
- 9:24Speaker 1: would look at someone like you and be like, wow,
- 9:25Speaker 1: you found your purpose like you are. You know what
- 9:29Speaker 1: I'm saying. I mean, I'm different with that. I knew
- 9:32Speaker 1: I was going to be successful anything that anything, once
- 9:37Speaker 1: I decided what I wanted to do. But comedy is
- 9:39Speaker 1: one of the hardest, It would say it's not only
- 9:42Speaker 1: the hardest, but I would imagine you failed quite a
- 9:45Speaker 1: few times before you were good from the job. From
- 9:48Speaker 1: day one. You never had a bomb. You never had
- 9:52Speaker 1: a bomb. I had one hiccup, and this because it
- 9:55Speaker 1: was emotional. A good friend of my rest in peace. UM.
- 9:59Speaker 1: He portrayed me at the highest level, and I told
- 10:01Speaker 1: my agents and everything. Did not let him be on
- 10:04Speaker 1: none of my shows, No nothing, We don't have nothing.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And for some reason he was on my show and
- 10:11Speaker 1: UM who was at North Carolina and ten teams at college,
- 10:15Speaker 1: UM show and and I had just seen him, and
- 10:20Speaker 1: I haven't seen him since the time that he did
- 10:22Speaker 1: what it is and it threw off all everything. See,
- 10:25Speaker 1: I don't write, I don't have a set set. A
- 10:28Speaker 1: lot of comedians have a set set. I go up
- 10:31Speaker 1: there and it comes to me, and I followed where
- 10:34Speaker 1: it takes me and right there, that was one of
- 10:36Speaker 1: the times that it just didn't come and it was
- 10:40Speaker 1: it was frustrating, but I waver it through it. But
- 10:42Speaker 1: the bomb part, Wait a minute, are you still like that?
- 10:46Speaker 1: You still do your sets like that where you don't
- 10:49Speaker 1: so when we watch you on Netflix or what have you,
- 10:51Speaker 1: it's not like a pre I already knew what I
- 10:54Speaker 1: wanted to talk about, but it's never UM choreograph. Each
- 11:00Speaker 1: is to say this, this and this. It's a lot.
- 11:02Speaker 1: That's why I never watched my UM specials because I
- 11:06Speaker 1: always know I can come back like damn, I forgot
- 11:09Speaker 1: to do this. And I finally watched my legendary spot
- 11:14Speaker 1: um Um legendary special that was done by Dave Chappelle,
- 11:18Speaker 1: and I was like, damn, I forgot to put in
- 11:21Speaker 1: on January six, when I was back back, been like
- 11:26Speaker 1: I'm i'd be like John walking the back back. I
- 11:32Speaker 1: forgot all that part. It was a lot of partsitive forget.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I forgot. You didn't have to do like two different tapings.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I would assume we had to do too, right, I
- 11:40Speaker 1: did too, but it was two different days. One of
- 11:44Speaker 1: the day well, and Dave said that we did the
- 11:47Speaker 1: first one and he said, we don't even have to
- 11:48Speaker 1: do the second. We got it in one take quick, Yeah,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and we was there. We got that looks good. Then
- 11:56Speaker 1: you get a big you got to get the cheese,
- 11:59Speaker 1: gotta get it right here, right here, So you step
- 12:02Speaker 1: out into comedy in Atlianta, and then what happens, Well,
- 12:09Speaker 1: they had a historic comedy club and it was called
- 12:13Speaker 1: um it was called the Comedy Act Theater. It was historic.
- 12:19Speaker 1: You know, broke some may through. Robin Hurts had the
- 12:21Speaker 1: one here in l A. And they had one and
- 12:24Speaker 1: around him and black people. You know, you tell a
- 12:29Speaker 1: woman you're a comedian first day, then, were you gonna
- 12:32Speaker 1: be at the comedy act? I said, well, I'm not
- 12:34Speaker 1: at the comedy act. I'm down. You're working for a
- 12:36Speaker 1: white man, Charlie. You know the white clubs and the
- 12:40Speaker 1: well call me when you come to comedy act. So anyway,
- 12:44Speaker 1: I told her, I said, okay, Oh, I finally went
- 12:48Speaker 1: to the You had to go on open mic, and
- 12:50Speaker 1: uh proved that you deserve to be on that stage.
- 12:53Speaker 1: So I went there and proved it. He gave me
- 12:56Speaker 1: a date. He said, man, I'm a finally book you
- 12:59Speaker 1: have been asked. I said, look me, book me. Yeah,
- 13:01Speaker 1: tell me. I said, up, I say you're donna book me.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Say I'm gonna let you open up for Paul Mooney.
- 13:09Speaker 1: So I went to the girl. I was like, hey, Maan,
- 13:12Speaker 1: I finally got it. Come on, come and see me
- 13:14Speaker 1: this Friday. I'm on two shows. I ain't told a
- 13:17Speaker 1: girl to come she came in anything at the show.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I go up to the owner. I say, man, when
- 13:25Speaker 1: what time am I going? He said, you were't working
- 13:27Speaker 1: here there? I said, you said I was gonna work it.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I don't let nobody open up for Paul Paul and
- 13:33Speaker 1: I said you did say it. I said, I didn't
- 13:35Speaker 1: say it. In this comedian who was a good friend
- 13:37Speaker 1: of mine, stood up to him, say you did tell
- 13:40Speaker 1: him that his name was Sherman. Golden said, I think
- 13:42Speaker 1: you did tell him that. So um, he said, I
- 13:46Speaker 1: didn't tell us. The girl say, see how knew he
- 13:47Speaker 1: was lying? You know, damn comedian. So I said, that's
- 13:51Speaker 1: all right. So I called my mother and told her
- 13:53Speaker 1: what happens to this and this? And my mother that
- 13:55Speaker 1: she always do get me tough love. She said, why
- 13:58Speaker 1: are you upset? Whatever I told you? You can told
- 14:01Speaker 1: you when you're a little boy, you can't get mad
- 14:02Speaker 1: at a kid that don't let you ride their bike,
- 14:04Speaker 1: even if they promised you. So why you beat up
- 14:07Speaker 1: the other boy from not letting them ride your bike?
- 14:08Speaker 1: You even get your own comedy club or go somewhere
- 14:11Speaker 1: else somebody else. And that was motivated me to open
- 14:14Speaker 1: my own company club. I opened up Uptown Comedy Corner
- 14:19Speaker 1: and closed his club. That's crazy. I was wondering. I
- 14:24Speaker 1: was gonna ask you when when did the comedy club.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I was motivated to the point that I had nowhere
- 14:31Speaker 1: in Atlanta to perform and he had the only club,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and he jerked me around, and I thought I was
- 14:36Speaker 1: gonna get some sympathy from my mother, and she gave
- 14:39Speaker 1: me real hard love, like get your own. And that's
- 14:41Speaker 1: where I happened. And and I in turn, when you
- 14:46Speaker 1: got my club and called it Uptown Comedy. Yeah, I'm
- 14:51Speaker 1: still here today. I mean, I don't know no longer
- 14:54Speaker 1: on a part of it, but shout out to you uptown.
- 14:59Speaker 1: So but now you go from a comic on stage
- 15:01Speaker 1: to do in the business. And I'm sure there hasn't
- 15:03Speaker 1: been like a world one of education that you had
- 15:07Speaker 1: to pick up or how how did that whole trans well.
- 15:09Speaker 1: To be honest with you again, I try to tell people,
- 15:12Speaker 1: which you might look as as a slight or a dish,
- 15:15Speaker 1: could be the best blessing God that ever gave you
- 15:18Speaker 1: for me opening up my own club comedy act being
- 15:21Speaker 1: so strong. He told every comedian in the line of
- 15:25Speaker 1: black comedian if you work his club, you'll never work
- 15:28Speaker 1: my club. You can't work your black ball And you
- 15:32Speaker 1: know you got the biggest club, Minarge open up for
- 15:34Speaker 1: the first time. So what they did was I had
- 15:36Speaker 1: to do all the time and didn't have other comedians there.
- 15:39Speaker 1: When he said that, oh, that's still the rule for
- 15:42Speaker 1: a lot of comedians comedy clubs. You should do that
- 15:44Speaker 1: all the time. You work and prov you can't work
- 15:48Speaker 1: the funny Bone, you work comedy store, you can't work
- 15:53Speaker 1: I didn't know that. Yes, it's it's always because they
- 15:55Speaker 1: feel it's the competition. So if they're sitting hire, if
- 16:00Speaker 1: you go over there, pick what's out, and comedians like,
- 16:02Speaker 1: we just want to work. So they boy caught you
- 16:04Speaker 1: and they'll tell you right now, if you worked this
- 16:06Speaker 1: one club, you couldn't worked out and you know that
- 16:09Speaker 1: was the rule. So they wouldn't come work my club because, um,
- 16:14Speaker 1: because they didn't want to be, you know, excommunicated from here.
- 16:19Speaker 1: In l a comedy act, you gotta understand, Robin Hurd
- 16:22Speaker 1: was high the Tories. It was it was the staple
- 16:25Speaker 1: I'm Brandon club. So now you end up doing most
- 16:28Speaker 1: of your stand up and owning the club exactly. So
- 16:32Speaker 1: and nobody wouldn't do it. That's why me and Steve
- 16:34Speaker 1: Harvey is so tight. Called Steve because we was friends.
- 16:37Speaker 1: I said, none of these mothers would do my club,
- 16:40Speaker 1: and this and this and that. He said, fun, then
- 16:42Speaker 1: I do it, and he called me and he came.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And once he came, he was hosting showtime at the
- 16:49Speaker 1: follow at the time, and he did My club sold
- 16:54Speaker 1: him out. Everybody came to see him, but discovered me.
- 16:59Speaker 1: So from that point on, we was. We was rolling
- 17:02Speaker 1: and plus we was better. We was uptown. We had food,
- 17:04Speaker 1: we had that balet service. He was downtown and a
- 17:08Speaker 1: bad part of town, which was midtown when people are
- 17:11Speaker 1: breaking in the car. That's why I called my um
- 17:14Speaker 1: My Club uptown because at that particular time, black people
- 17:17Speaker 1: wasn't going on to Buckhead. It was staying away from Buckhead.
- 17:20Speaker 1: It was kind of like Cobb County and Marietta. Now
- 17:24Speaker 1: that's black people. I've just left Atlanta there there and then.
- 17:26Speaker 1: But back then, that's when them cocaine and people like
- 17:30Speaker 1: hit the line, don't bring your black heads up here.
- 17:33Speaker 1: It was Georgia, Georgia, Georgia, and um they told him
- 17:39Speaker 1: they can't. And I was from Washington, d C. Over
- 17:41Speaker 1: the hell you say we can't come up here, I'm
- 17:43Speaker 1: coming up here. So I went on and put my
- 17:46Speaker 1: club up there and called an uptown comedy Corner. How
- 17:49Speaker 1: did you finance everything? Well, you know what happened is
- 17:53Speaker 1: I had this partner, his name was Gary. He was
- 17:55Speaker 1: doing like um he was. He was doing one nighters
- 18:00Speaker 1: and one night is is just where you just have
- 18:03Speaker 1: comedy that night. He was doing them in like Taco
- 18:06Speaker 1: Max and little Speakeasies and shon. So I said, man,
- 18:11Speaker 1: we need to open up a club. And he was
- 18:14Speaker 1: like the club and like hen a black comic. So
- 18:18Speaker 1: I took him down to the comedy act and said,
- 18:20Speaker 1: look at this. They got four other people in here,
- 18:23Speaker 1: two waitresses, no food service, and bad and they used
- 18:27Speaker 1: the same comics for the whole months. If you see
- 18:30Speaker 1: this motherfucker this Friday and thurtaty, you don't see the
- 18:33Speaker 1: same act next Friday and hurdy and which is against
- 18:37Speaker 1: the law in being comedy. So he um he said,
- 18:40Speaker 1: I ain't beat. So he we both went out and
- 18:43Speaker 1: tried to get some people to um finance the club.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Of course, I went to all my brothers who's in basketball,
- 18:50Speaker 1: like Dion. I mean sports athletes like Dion and all
- 18:54Speaker 1: of them and all different, none of them an get
- 18:56Speaker 1: me no money. He found a plastic surgeon, the number
- 18:59Speaker 1: one last day surgery in the in Georgia in the
- 19:03Speaker 1: country at that time. He gave us a half a
- 19:06Speaker 1: million hours to start the club. And did you guys
- 19:09Speaker 1: know him or was it just around well he know him,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I didn't know him, and he was he a black guy?
- 19:14Speaker 1: Was he was wit and he financed half a million dollars,
- 19:17Speaker 1: gave us a half a million dollars to start the club.
- 19:21Speaker 1: First before he gave us the half a million dow,
- 19:23Speaker 1: he gave us like twenty dollars and say, I flipped
- 19:26Speaker 1: that twenty on comedy and show me y'all can make
- 19:29Speaker 1: money off of it, then I'll support y'all in um
- 19:35Speaker 1: for the club. So that's how we found Ricky Smiley.
- 19:37Speaker 1: We went down to Birmingham to do a one night
- 19:43Speaker 1: and ran into Ricky Smiley and let him open up
- 19:47Speaker 1: the show. He was the feature and birmingha ways from
- 19:53Speaker 1: and he uh, he was the feature. The dude who
- 19:57Speaker 1: his name is Gary, He was the m C and
- 19:59Speaker 1: I was they head line And we just did shows
- 20:02Speaker 1: down and flipped the money and came back to Dr
- 20:04Speaker 1: Thomas and bring you back sixty off the forty. He said, Okay,
- 20:08Speaker 1: y'all really can do this, and then he gave us
- 20:10Speaker 1: a half a million hours. And why didn't you guys
- 20:12Speaker 1: have the Steve Harvey connect at the time. Well, Steve
- 20:15Speaker 1: wasn't Steve at that part. That was because it was
- 20:19Speaker 1: before the club. It was he was doing Apollo and everything.
- 20:24Speaker 1: And plus his manager, Christo Petta, who owned a comedy
- 20:28Speaker 1: club itself, was it was. It was we could say
- 20:33Speaker 1: he was our counselor he was our consultant, told us
- 20:35Speaker 1: where to get the stuff at, how to run a
- 20:37Speaker 1: club and all that. We know, all the in the
- 20:40Speaker 1: nuance arounding the club. And he managed Steve at the
- 20:42Speaker 1: same time. And you know, once we got on our
- 20:46Speaker 1: feet and everything, we called Steve up and Steve came
- 20:49Speaker 1: in there for us and we turned it in and
- 20:53Speaker 1: from that one club, we made it out of Ti
- 20:56Speaker 1: about four to in Atlanta at one x is No.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Three in Alana, and one in Texas Downars Texas. Wow,
- 21:09Speaker 1: that's yeah. We was the first ones to ever do
- 21:13Speaker 1: one nighters for comedy for Black comics. Thank you flavor
- 21:16Speaker 1: the man. We was the first one down South to
- 21:19Speaker 1: actually say for tonight, it's gonna be a comedy show here,
- 21:24Speaker 1: not doing comedy between dancing and everything. Actually tonight is
- 21:29Speaker 1: a comedy night. Now, most comedy clubs don't. They make
- 21:33Speaker 1: their money off like alcohol too. Well, the double in it.
- 21:36Speaker 1: It all depends on how you um um structure to
- 21:39Speaker 1: deal a person of my status. If you know, looking
- 21:43Speaker 1: at it, you they probably asked for a guarantee of
- 21:46Speaker 1: a certain amount of money and a percentage of the board,
- 21:49Speaker 1: the percentage of the door eighty minus expenses, what I'm saying,
- 21:55Speaker 1: and then the liquor and the food is the clubs,
- 21:57Speaker 1: that's how they make their mine. So what did you
- 21:59Speaker 1: guys have to get a liqualizers? Of course, and that
- 22:02Speaker 1: wasn't hard to do. So much money. Well, that wasn't
- 22:06Speaker 1: hard to do because they was white. It would have
- 22:07Speaker 1: been harder to do for me if I did it,
- 22:10Speaker 1: you know what I mean, because the surgeon was like,
- 22:12Speaker 1: well the surgeon was white, and my partner was what
- 22:16Speaker 1: I mean, I'm Gary, he's white too. I was the
- 22:19Speaker 1: only chip in the cookie of this. So I was
- 22:21Speaker 1: the only black person bringing to a black um telling
- 22:24Speaker 1: it was a substitutent. I mean that wanted to see
- 22:27Speaker 1: black comedy, but I couldn't get nobody black to see it.
- 22:31Speaker 1: But then, you know, and let me be the callust.
- 22:34Speaker 1: So I was the phase of the company. I was one.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I'm in the streets tell him that I'm doing, and
- 22:41Speaker 1: I knew exactly what it needed to do. You gotta understand,
- 22:44Speaker 1: this is the time Chris Tucker had just started, you know.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Um Bernie had just was just hitting too, you know.
- 22:54Speaker 1: So we had everybody every comedian you ever grace no
- 22:58Speaker 1: stage at my club. My problem, my problem. So we
- 23:14Speaker 1: and everybody every comedian you ever grace at my stage
- 23:18Speaker 1: at my club. It was in the nineties. You got
- 23:20Speaker 1: under stand. That's when TLC and Goodie mob uh Ludicrous
- 23:26Speaker 1: was on the radio. Stidn't being a rapper? Um it
- 23:30Speaker 1: was Atlanta when Atlanta was Atlanta. Yeah, And I was
- 23:34Speaker 1: from out of town and so an opportunity and cashed
- 23:37Speaker 1: in on. Now, how did you end up staying passionate
- 23:40Speaker 1: about comedy while becoming like this, like impressive entrepreneur, Like,
- 23:46Speaker 1: how was it not distracting? Well, it really wasn't, because
- 23:50Speaker 1: that wasn't my aspect of the game. I personally, I
- 23:53Speaker 1: wasn't looking at it the entrepreneurship of it. I was
- 23:57Speaker 1: looking I finally got a place of opportunity to perform
- 24:01Speaker 1: and validate to was one of my biggest um hells
- 24:05Speaker 1: in life. Women black women. Yeah, I am a comedian
- 24:08Speaker 1: poaching here, I am, you know what I mean. So
- 24:12Speaker 1: the entrepreneur part of it, and never even I was
- 24:15Speaker 1: too young to even see that aspect of it, you know,
- 24:18Speaker 1: I was really ignorant to the fact of it. Was
- 24:20Speaker 1: like I got my own comedy club. I just got
- 24:23Speaker 1: out the military and then I got a club and
- 24:26Speaker 1: a hot city that that's bumping. I mean, it's beautiful
- 24:30Speaker 1: with nothing but us and they party the six in
- 24:33Speaker 1: the morning. You go over to Dominiques Club, Stay did
- 24:36Speaker 1: the four, go to Magic City, stay to five, didn't
- 24:40Speaker 1: go to one twelve, Stay there to eight in the morning.
- 24:42Speaker 1: And then it was just coming up with this Southern
- 24:46Speaker 1: music stylistic and big Boy and Andre through thousands tills
- 24:53Speaker 1: c it was. And you a major player when all
- 24:57Speaker 1: that ship is happening right there, you got money in
- 24:59Speaker 1: your pocket. And I never had to stand in on
- 25:01Speaker 1: line and get in the club and had the highest
- 25:04Speaker 1: one when Alexis, when Alexis first came out, had two
- 25:08Speaker 1: of them and living in Buckhead and the penthouse. So
- 25:11Speaker 1: the entrepreneur part of it, the business I didn't even see.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I was like ship rock and roll. I'm living all
- 25:21Speaker 1: that rest that my money packed him. You know, you're
- 25:24Speaker 1: looking at your partner and you get that in you
- 25:26Speaker 1: stayed behind the scene. I'll be the front man, and
- 25:29Speaker 1: we got a partnership. We're gonna get Dr Tom back
- 25:31Speaker 1: his money. And it spanned on and keep on going,
- 25:34Speaker 1: you know. And that's what it was. When did you
- 25:38Speaker 1: realize that you had officially arrived, Like was there a
- 25:42Speaker 1: pivotal moment where you were like, I'm in this game.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I'm in it. Um. I was at Steve Harvey's club
- 25:54Speaker 1: because he had his own club after you, after you,
- 25:58Speaker 1: I want minds first, and then he had his. I
- 26:00Speaker 1: think that's how I went correctly. But his was huge.
- 26:03Speaker 1: He held about fourift people mines on him, about two
- 26:07Speaker 1: n He had his own and it was in Dallas.
- 26:10Speaker 1: So I did for him what he did for me.
- 26:14Speaker 1: I came to performing his club and it was all
- 26:18Speaker 1: love at this point, no no competitive, no part of
- 26:20Speaker 1: me was like, oh, now he's opening club after I
- 26:22Speaker 1: opened the club. I'm just trying to understand. But you don't,
- 26:25Speaker 1: you know, you don't even see that when you're in
- 26:27Speaker 1: the midst of having a great time one thing about
- 26:31Speaker 1: to be a hater, you have to pay attention. I'm
- 26:34Speaker 1: not paying attention, you know what I mean. I don't.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I don't have no time to be looking at what
- 26:40Speaker 1: you're doing trying to get what I'm doing. To to
- 26:44Speaker 1: hate on somebody, you must pay attention to what they're doing,
- 26:48Speaker 1: you know. So that's not me. So I'm in the
- 26:51Speaker 1: me what I'm doing. I came out of the military
- 26:54Speaker 1: of you know, represent the United States, and now I
- 26:57Speaker 1: have self proclaimed but for myself of my name, enabled
- 27:01Speaker 1: into the greatest city and found a hustle, to be
- 27:05Speaker 1: quite honest with you, that was paying a lot of
- 27:07Speaker 1: money that I I was born with. I didn't have
- 27:10Speaker 1: to work at. I didn't have to just it was
- 27:13Speaker 1: they was paying me for being me. So when we
- 27:17Speaker 1: first get that, like, all right, So I didn't know
- 27:21Speaker 1: what my talent was until I went to Steve's club,
- 27:27Speaker 1: and then I learned the business of the game. Because
- 27:29Speaker 1: you get on stage based upon your credits. This man
- 27:33Speaker 1: been on Apollo Theater, It's been in the movie. I
- 27:38Speaker 1: got the hook up and anything. I had nothing at
- 27:42Speaker 1: that time. You had nothing. I had nothing. All I
- 27:44Speaker 1: had was he's funny and ship He's one of the
- 27:47Speaker 1: funniest bang out Steven so um. But Steve knew how
- 27:52Speaker 1: funny you were. Definitely, Yeah, definitely, So he knew you
- 27:56Speaker 1: were going to shut it down. He just so he
- 27:57Speaker 1: was like the one that kind of helped introduce you
- 27:59Speaker 1: to the world. Well, what he did was he showed
- 28:02Speaker 1: me was because when we got in the back, you know,
- 28:05Speaker 1: he wrong all the comedians and gonna like you came,
- 28:08Speaker 1: you know, say you go first, you do Fifth Team, minutes,
- 28:11Speaker 1: you're twenty, you're close to show. We're sitting here in
- 28:15Speaker 1: the back and he said, you go first, you go
- 28:20Speaker 1: featuring Quaking close to show. So the dude who's been
- 28:23Speaker 1: on Apolo and from New York's a man, I've been
- 28:27Speaker 1: on this, so, uh shouldn't I close the show? And
- 28:31Speaker 1: you know, Steve, what people don't know about Steve Harvey.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Steve Harvey has been Steve Harvey since day one. He
- 28:38Speaker 1: told him, Steve Harvey Club. If Steve Harvey said he
- 28:42Speaker 1: go last, he go last. So we're sitting back all
- 28:48Speaker 1: together comedians doing say, man, you really want to go
- 28:50Speaker 1: to talk to him? You know I'm who I am.
- 28:52Speaker 1: You might want to go up and tell him. You
- 28:54Speaker 1: know that I should hosted. You don't want that, I said, Man,
- 28:57Speaker 1: I'm telling her nothing. And you know he said that
- 29:01Speaker 1: to me, the one that wasn't. Yeah, what he was
- 29:04Speaker 1: saying was, I'm gonna make it easier for you. You
- 29:08Speaker 1: should go ahead and go because if you go behind me,
- 29:12Speaker 1: it's gonna be hell for you. You know, you're gonna
- 29:16Speaker 1: get boozed and it's gonna be an ass whoop. And
- 29:18Speaker 1: that's that's that's what you're don't know. So as leg yeah, yeah,
- 29:24Speaker 1: they're still a lot of community. If you put communities together,
- 29:27Speaker 1: we already know who's supposed to go in, and if
- 29:30Speaker 1: we see somebody with inferior talent behind, we look at
- 29:32Speaker 1: him saying, hey, you better say something. But if you
- 29:35Speaker 1: don't want to say thatthing going out there, because see,
- 29:37Speaker 1: all the credits you have don't matter. When you hit
- 29:41Speaker 1: that stage. You get the employer and you get the
- 29:43Speaker 1: patience for the first five minutes, but after that you
- 29:46Speaker 1: gotta bring that work, and it's right there where you
- 29:50Speaker 1: differentially between who's funny and who has titles, who's a
- 29:56Speaker 1: movie star but used to be a comic, who's the
- 30:00Speaker 1: TV star who used to be a comic, you know,
- 30:03Speaker 1: but who still is funny today? So the equalizer on
- 30:08Speaker 1: the stag, on the on the stage and speak for itself.
- 30:11Speaker 1: And that's what I was saying to him. I said, listen, man,
- 30:14Speaker 1: I ain't saying nothing. You heard what he said. If
- 30:16Speaker 1: you don't like where it is, then you go up
- 30:19Speaker 1: there and tell him. And he said, you know how
- 30:21Speaker 1: black people say I hate, then see when they tell
- 30:24Speaker 1: you I hain Then I mean, I gave your warning.
- 30:27Speaker 1: You're about to get it. So as a comedian, you
- 30:29Speaker 1: can sit back. I'm sitting in the back of the
- 30:31Speaker 1: room and just looking and I mean, this motherfucker putting
- 30:34Speaker 1: emphasis on every joke. Hey, you can tell a boy,
- 30:37Speaker 1: he well, you could think the cameras is on like this,
- 30:41Speaker 1: this is only wanted the documentary. I just looked at
- 30:44Speaker 1: him and said that ain't that ain't gonna be enough.
- 30:48Speaker 1: So I hit him on Wins and hit him on
- 30:50Speaker 1: Thursday and hit him on by Friday. He came around
- 30:53Speaker 1: the saying goddamn conclusions. He was like, man, who are you?
- 30:58Speaker 1: Who aren't you? And me and Steve still talk about
- 31:02Speaker 1: that to the day, but I'm gonna tell me who.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Steve has given me that type of UM reinforcement encouragement
- 31:13Speaker 1: a lot in my career. So that's when I knew.
- 31:15Speaker 1: I said, Okay, okay, I can really do this. This
- 31:19Speaker 1: is an option if I want to go down this row.
- 31:21Speaker 1: I got this. I'm not saying that's where I want
- 31:24Speaker 1: to know. That's why I when you know Chris, Chris
- 31:27Speaker 1: Tucker came to me before he left to come to
- 31:29Speaker 1: l A, like, come on, man, let's go to l A.
- 31:31Speaker 1: You need to leave this ship. Man, Let's go to Hollywood.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I said, come down, I just got ahead you from here.
- 31:40Speaker 1: He's from Atlanta. You're like, come on, let's go to
- 31:43Speaker 1: l A. I'm like, no, I'm loving this man, brand New,
- 31:48Speaker 1: It's bad. Let me man, ain't going You ain't gotta
- 31:53Speaker 1: pay for gas down This is because they let you
- 31:55Speaker 1: pump it first and then go inside and pay. Who
- 31:58Speaker 1: does that? I ain't are you? It's free ass gas.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I'm not here killing these country mamas. You know I'm slipping,
- 32:06Speaker 1: you know, what I mean. And I never saw that,
- 32:09Speaker 1: but I knew I had it in my back pocket
- 32:11Speaker 1: if that's what I wanted to do, you know what
- 32:13Speaker 1: I mean. So I just kept on playing. And then
- 32:17Speaker 1: as I started seeing when I had Steve in my
- 32:21Speaker 1: club for the first time and he sold out all
- 32:26Speaker 1: them shows and I wrote him a check for about
- 32:29Speaker 1: sixty thous it was like, it's this kind of money.
- 32:35Speaker 1: In this kind of money, you gotta understand it. Um,
- 32:41Speaker 1: he sold four shows out on side, the four shows
- 32:45Speaker 1: out on on Friday, four shows out on Sunday. It's
- 32:50Speaker 1: because the thirty two tickets, we hit them all over
- 32:55Speaker 1: the head for thirty five dollars. Thirty only put that
- 33:00Speaker 1: MoMA time he's taking. He's walking out there for about
- 33:04Speaker 1: sixty thousand dollars in a weekend. It all depends on structure.
- 33:09Speaker 1: And you're talking about sixty dollar dollars in nine so
- 33:13Speaker 1: that's about a hundred thousand dollars now, like six thousand,
- 33:20Speaker 1: fucking athlete. I'll say, Okay, so how did you end
- 33:25Speaker 1: up working with Chappelle? Like, what what's that story? Well, Chappelle, Um,
- 33:30Speaker 1: I'm at Chapelle. When I booked them at my club,
- 33:32Speaker 1: My partner whose name is Gary Books. Chappelle and I
- 33:38Speaker 1: looked at the books and I don't say how much
- 33:40Speaker 1: money be paying this motherfuck? I like, who is this? Mama?
- 33:44Speaker 1: Never heard him, know nothing about it, so he didn't
- 33:46Speaker 1: have his credentials then. No, he was just he was
- 33:50Speaker 1: baby Jesus. He was just baby Jesus. You know what
- 33:54Speaker 1: I mean. You you know what people don't understand about
- 33:58Speaker 1: Chappelle's And I try to tell him so much. Chappelle
- 34:02Speaker 1: is the comedy version. He's like Lebron in basketball. He
- 34:09Speaker 1: never had to go to college. Soon as he was born,
- 34:12Speaker 1: he was destined as the chosen one. He was in
- 34:15Speaker 1: there from fourteen fifteen and they he was here. So
- 34:19Speaker 1: I didn't know nothing that much about him or know
- 34:21Speaker 1: anything about it. Like I told you, I was in
- 34:23Speaker 1: my own world, having a good time in Atlanta. But
- 34:25Speaker 1: I said, who we got coming this week? He said,
- 34:27Speaker 1: we got this kid coming. His name is Dave Chappelle. Oh,
- 34:32Speaker 1: he was about eighteen young kids, and uh he was young.
- 34:39Speaker 1: And I said, well, you know how much we're paying him?
- 34:44Speaker 1: And they told me how much? What the fuck? Who
- 34:47Speaker 1: is this one? He told me? All I said, I right,
- 34:50Speaker 1: tell the manager they ain't gotta go pick him up
- 34:53Speaker 1: for press. I'm gonna take him from press. You know,
- 34:56Speaker 1: dog the dog you want to smell at ass? Who
- 34:59Speaker 1: this motherfucker? You know? You know what I mean? Man
- 35:01Speaker 1: for man? Let me So I go pick him up.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Great grilled cheese. Thank you. I picked him up. Embassy suites,
- 35:14Speaker 1: pick them up, get him in the car, and they
- 35:17Speaker 1: let you pick him up. Well you don't. You're the
- 35:18Speaker 1: owner of the club, right, owners the club always get
- 35:21Speaker 1: to pick up the challenge as you usually don't even
- 35:25Speaker 1: get the owner when the owner comes to get you.
- 35:27Speaker 1: You the ship news, just the manager or something like that.
- 35:33Speaker 1: So I go pick him up. It was a man
- 35:35Speaker 1: lane quake and man or whatever took them to all
- 35:38Speaker 1: the spot. You smoke, you smoke, Yeah, I smoke, you smoke.
- 35:43Speaker 1: I ain't. Let's roll a couple of bunts to go
- 35:45Speaker 1: to the radio. Get him the briefing on that. Still
- 35:50Speaker 1: I can't tell how great he is. See some comedians
- 35:53Speaker 1: trying to prove it be funny all the time. What
- 35:55Speaker 1: we call on you know that motherfucker's are fake. They're
- 35:58Speaker 1: trying to prove to you what they appetition is true.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Killers in our game don't say nothing till it's time,
- 36:04Speaker 1: because they already authenticated. They know who they are. I
- 36:07Speaker 1: didn't know that at the time, So I drive him around.
- 36:11Speaker 1: This is my fun, trying to come to do his show,
- 36:16Speaker 1: our host, do my ship, bring them back, and this
- 36:20Speaker 1: ship back. His first joke he came up. He said,
- 36:27Speaker 1: his joke was, how did they come up? How did
- 36:30Speaker 1: white people come up with the word nick? The most
- 36:34Speaker 1: brilliant should I haven't heard in my fucking life. The
- 36:36Speaker 1: other day he said, we need to call these coon
- 36:39Speaker 1: you know today now we need to call these coon something.
- 36:42Speaker 1: We gotta get something to ruggatory. They're having the biggest Tommy.
- 36:45Speaker 1: I gotta no goodness, no good don't you don't flow
- 36:53Speaker 1: off the tongue. Backstabbers, backslibbers, you know, put it in
- 37:05Speaker 1: the center centers. Get off of my port, you back stammer.
- 37:10Speaker 1: No man, that ain't it. Whooooo bit bob, nigger, nigger,
- 37:21Speaker 1: nigger rolls off the tomb. Get on you, nigger nigga.
- 37:31Speaker 1: I grabbed a bott of champagne, said that boy is great,
- 37:35Speaker 1: and it was a respect of the intellect of the joke.
- 37:40Speaker 1: And that's what I try to write. It's serious, but
- 37:44Speaker 1: you make it funny, but it's sister. Lets you know,
- 37:48Speaker 1: how did they come up with that? And look how
- 37:50Speaker 1: you put it in a community away so you can
- 37:53Speaker 1: digest it without being offended by and it's a beautiful
- 37:57Speaker 1: craftic when you're able to put that together. He was
- 38:00Speaker 1: doing that at an early age and he told me
- 38:02Speaker 1: that was the first time that he had worked a
- 38:05Speaker 1: joke out or told that joke was at my club,
- 38:07Speaker 1: and I was like, it's still one of the best
- 38:10Speaker 1: jokes having And you got to say that, Oh, Billy Bob,
- 38:16Speaker 1: how does it feel now having the Dave Chappelle Presents
- 38:18Speaker 1: on Netflix? It was career to find it career changing
- 38:24Speaker 1: And you're not understand my number one constituents who support
- 38:31Speaker 1: me as my people, and the support is there's no
- 38:35Speaker 1: words to even tell my gratitude for it. But professionally,
- 38:41Speaker 1: on the point is when you don't do mainstreams rooms
- 38:45Speaker 1: such as catcherizing, Star, comedy seller, comedy store, the people
- 38:53Speaker 1: who can elevate your career at a higher level don't
- 38:56Speaker 1: come where I tell my jokes at. Yeah. See, I
- 39:00Speaker 1: my constituents, my people, so I go where there we're
- 39:03Speaker 1: there they have and I entertained them well. But unfortunately
- 39:07Speaker 1: they don't have no TV shows, they don't have no
- 39:11Speaker 1: movie deals. So you just have to accept that, you
- 39:14Speaker 1: know what I mean? If you notice most of our stars,
- 39:19Speaker 1: you never seen them mother us until they was presented
- 39:24Speaker 1: to you in the show. So only your bernies and
- 39:28Speaker 1: the means and anything you've seen us come through your
- 39:33Speaker 1: neighborhood to get to that platform. Is that why you did?
- 39:36Speaker 1: Everybody hates Christ and all those guys, and no, I
- 39:39Speaker 1: just took advantage of the opportunity that was given to me.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Chris put me on the show, and he presented the
- 39:44Speaker 1: opportunity and he shared the plate which they knew he
- 39:48Speaker 1: was great, and he said, hey man, I know somebody
- 39:50Speaker 1: y'all might not have heard of him telling he's great.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Put him on. And that's the same thing they've done
- 39:55Speaker 1: for it. Because if you're not in that circle, like
- 39:59Speaker 1: I said, but forming in front of them, or have
- 40:01Speaker 1: somebody in the room to say, hey man, this is
- 40:04Speaker 1: motherfucker's funny and they believe in it, you could be
- 40:06Speaker 1: as funny as the fun you want to be. You
- 40:08Speaker 1: still ain't gonna get a shot on ABC. None of
- 40:11Speaker 1: the major curious because we don't own anything. Even when
- 40:14Speaker 1: we own BT, we didn't own by or even when
- 40:17Speaker 1: we're like running it and we're not, we're not running.
- 40:20Speaker 1: They're still not a student, not the game. They still
- 40:23Speaker 1: don't you know, they put BT up like comic. We
- 40:26Speaker 1: don't give our opportunity for you know, the comedians in
- 40:31Speaker 1: our community, but you still pick the motherfucker's who came
- 40:34Speaker 1: up outside of our committee. Don't disrespect to them because
- 40:37Speaker 1: you don't go down and go down to Compton to
- 40:40Speaker 1: find out who's performing at the club down and Compton.
- 40:43Speaker 1: That's killing you know what I mean? Why do you
- 40:45Speaker 1: think that is um job security? Faith afraid to um
- 40:52Speaker 1: make the wrong move because your decision you make with
- 40:56Speaker 1: the opportunity you for. So to be a decision maker,
- 41:00Speaker 1: you need to go with something definite, safe, that's safe
- 41:04Speaker 1: yours and plus, to be quite honest, you don't have
- 41:06Speaker 1: the authority to give a shot to somebody else on
- 41:09Speaker 1: that you need. You have to bring a name person
- 41:12Speaker 1: for them to give you the okay you can do it.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Do you think that's why it seems like that Steve Harvey,
- 41:17Speaker 1: the Dave Chappelle is there. I feel like all those
- 41:19Speaker 1: comics of that genre, and it could be just that
- 41:21Speaker 1: they all kind of came up at the same area.
- 41:23Speaker 1: But from an outsider, it looks like they you guys
- 41:27Speaker 1: all stick together and support each other and pull like
- 41:30Speaker 1: if if someone's not being recognized, you kind of like
- 41:32Speaker 1: pull them over the fence. Like now that they're out
- 41:34Speaker 1: the hole, they're you know, they're like, I'm gonna throw
- 41:37Speaker 1: you a line. You deserve it, you earned it, but
- 41:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna throw you the line since these other people
- 41:42Speaker 1: can't see it. Well. Most great comedians understand. One thing
- 41:47Speaker 1: only different between each great comedian is that one great
- 41:50Speaker 1: comedian got an opportunity and then cashed in on it.
- 41:55Speaker 1: There's so many difference. Once you get to the opportunity
- 42:01Speaker 1: and you cash in on it's more opportunity to come in,
- 42:04Speaker 1: and if you're not egocentric and you're not sitting there
- 42:07Speaker 1: worrying about it, you say, hey, man, this man is
- 42:10Speaker 1: just as great as me. Y'all need to check him out.
- 42:13Speaker 1: And those people down that opportunity thinking you're all great,
- 42:16Speaker 1: because like, hey, what about him? See him and you
- 42:18Speaker 1: wouldn't feel about giving him an opportunity that you struck
- 42:22Speaker 1: so hard to get, Gonna keep you from getting more
- 42:25Speaker 1: opportunity again that that I mean that you're gonna get.
- 42:29Speaker 1: And that's why most great comedians and the people that
- 42:32Speaker 1: you speak to d L. S or Steve Harvey, your
- 42:35Speaker 1: Bernie is your centric at the time, Chris rock Um,
- 42:39Speaker 1: Dave calv they don't mind giving it to it because
- 42:42Speaker 1: they understand once they was giving that opportunity. You know,
- 42:47Speaker 1: people are say, what was your big break? It ain't
- 42:50Speaker 1: calling big break? When was your great When did you
- 42:52Speaker 1: get an opportunity and you cashed in on it? That's
- 42:55Speaker 1: what it is, ain't it ain't No fucking thing is
- 42:58Speaker 1: a big break? What an opportunity came in and your cash?
- 43:03Speaker 1: Then on Jordan's Game for six three g he appathy
- 43:07Speaker 1: took the shot, he made the shot. The whole world
- 43:10Speaker 1: was there to see it. He submitted, Wow, that's that's
- 43:13Speaker 1: a great way to look at it. Actually, it's the
- 43:15Speaker 1: only way to look at I mean, because it's honestly,
- 43:17Speaker 1: because you're dealing with something that's subjective. What's funny to
- 43:20Speaker 1: you might not be funny to me. So I had
- 43:23Speaker 1: always people come to me that quick, why ain't you
- 43:25Speaker 1: never you don't want no TV show, You ain't got
- 43:27Speaker 1: no movies. I said, ain't like I turned the ship down.
- 43:31Speaker 1: I just hadn't had the opportunity to cash in on it.
- 43:34Speaker 1: And that's all it is. Do you write for shows ever? Oh,
- 43:39Speaker 1: is there a reason why you're against it? Because you
- 43:41Speaker 1: just said no, Like you're adamant too much time in
- 43:44Speaker 1: writing for somebody else for yourself every day? Is it
- 43:51Speaker 1: like if I had to be like a fly on
- 43:54Speaker 1: the wall, like a day in your life? What does
- 43:56Speaker 1: it look like? You get up seven glad to take
- 44:00Speaker 1: my grown as son to work? Why you have to
- 44:05Speaker 1: do that? Because that's how quality time. A lot of
- 44:08Speaker 1: people like Dan. Yeah, now how old is he'll be
- 44:12Speaker 1: twunny one June four? So that's like grown? But not
- 44:18Speaker 1: I was thinking, he's here from college, he got his
- 44:22Speaker 1: first summer job, and I enjoyed that, you know, I
- 44:28Speaker 1: enjoy you know, paid a lot of money for that
- 44:30Speaker 1: bride problem. Yeah, so I take him, drop him off,
- 44:49Speaker 1: and you know, I'm boxing and I invest in boxes.
- 44:53Speaker 1: I had to working out with that in and come back,
- 44:55Speaker 1: take my act to class at ten o'clock, then one
- 44:58Speaker 1: o'clock to do my radio show. Um quake House Friendly Plug. Yeah,
- 45:03Speaker 1: check out quake House number one radio show serious XM
- 45:06Speaker 1: coming houts laugh at our radio. Finished that at three,
- 45:11Speaker 1: come back and do another action session off of it,
- 45:14Speaker 1: and then the rest of it. Whatever. How do you
- 45:17Speaker 1: come up with the jokes though? Is it just living
- 45:19Speaker 1: everyday life and penning it? For me, my process is
- 45:23Speaker 1: just being informed. Read the newspaper. But man, but watch
- 45:28Speaker 1: the news, watch what's going on, going on, and then
- 45:32Speaker 1: formulate my opinion based on the information I get. Like
- 45:37Speaker 1: the joke of January six, watched it first thing, I'm like, boy,
- 45:42Speaker 1: I wish I was working that day as a Capital
- 45:45Speaker 1: city police. Believe me, they would have came off from
- 45:49Speaker 1: a step up because I'd have been like pat shooting man,
- 45:52Speaker 1: Like what are you doing saving democracy? Path I've been johning,
- 45:55Speaker 1: we can have and it's the truth. You know, he's
- 45:59Speaker 1: sitting down now side form it and you take that
- 46:03Speaker 1: and you run with it, and you just add other
- 46:06Speaker 1: stuff to that initial thought. Now side formulated, and once
- 46:12Speaker 1: the thought has evaporated, you go to the next story.
- 46:15Speaker 1: When do you retire a joke? When do you say,
- 46:17Speaker 1: you know what, fine? The world can have it? Um
- 46:20Speaker 1: min as always of it? Because I get tired of
- 46:23Speaker 1: saying it. And plus other stuff that happened. Yeah, Like,
- 46:26Speaker 1: so I know you have a lot of shows coming out.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Another plug um during everything with donniell Rolins get comes
- 46:34Speaker 1: see us. I want to come to your show. And
- 46:37Speaker 1: so of course I was asking. I was asking the
- 46:41Speaker 1: earthquake before we were taping. I was I was like,
- 46:44Speaker 1: you know, are you gonna say the same jokes? Because
- 46:46Speaker 1: a lot of comedians they say the same jokes, you know,
- 46:49Speaker 1: while they're working it out before they go to take
- 46:51Speaker 1: So I'm like, you know, if I were to go
- 46:53Speaker 1: to your show, what am I going to see? Am
- 46:55Speaker 1: I going to see the same material that I have seen?
- 46:57Speaker 1: And your response was no, that's blasphemy. Yeah. The rule is,
- 47:04Speaker 1: I don't know. There's a lot of comedians they know
- 47:09Speaker 1: whose is. Once you put it on TV, it's gone.
- 47:12Speaker 1: So you can't do it live. You don't suppose to
- 47:15Speaker 1: do a lot. You might say something from it or
- 47:20Speaker 1: very o that for some people that want to hear it.
- 47:22Speaker 1: On that point, but the totality of the set should
- 47:27Speaker 1: never be we ever be done again. So if if
- 47:31Speaker 1: you see comedians say a joke on video when you
- 47:35Speaker 1: go to the club, you shouldn't expect to see that
- 47:37Speaker 1: same job. I agree with that. No, No, that's the rule.
- 47:42Speaker 1: That's the rule. That's the rule. What are some comments
- 47:46Speaker 1: that you sold that number two years so we're not
- 47:49Speaker 1: singers can't come back? And do you know you're not
- 47:53Speaker 1: being honest that you can't go around and senior first hit.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Once you release it, it's gone. For me, I had
- 48:01Speaker 1: always replace them every year because I was going to
- 48:08Speaker 1: the same city every year. And they're not gonna pay
- 48:10Speaker 1: you another forty dollars for the forty dollars they paid
- 48:13Speaker 1: for the jump the phone. And if you don't have
- 48:16Speaker 1: TV movies, which I didn't have, and you're just getting
- 48:19Speaker 1: your your crowd and your audience, your constituents coming off
- 48:23Speaker 1: a word of mouth, you have to not only satisfy
- 48:30Speaker 1: the people who coming to see you again and raise
- 48:33Speaker 1: their expectation, but also meet the expectation of people who
- 48:37Speaker 1: they referred you to to tell you come see them,
- 48:40Speaker 1: so you don't have the luxury and say, girl, you
- 48:42Speaker 1: know him. You know he was in Frinday. Yeah, girl,
- 48:45Speaker 1: you know he's in Blackish. You don't get none of that. Yeah,
- 48:49Speaker 1: he's funny, and you gotta be funny. And black people
- 48:51Speaker 1: the hardest people to make laugh and coming that moment
- 48:54Speaker 1: just make me laugh the ship I can been doing
- 49:00Speaker 1: you over here with this bullshit that I could have
- 49:03Speaker 1: wrote this bullshit? Who are some of your favorite up
- 49:06Speaker 1: and comers that no one knows that you've been peeping? Oh,
- 49:11Speaker 1: let's give let's give the up and comers some love.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Let's see who you got who got your eye on
- 49:16Speaker 1: that we should be looking out for. I'm bad, that's
- 49:18Speaker 1: a bad question for me. I don't watch the comedians.
- 49:22Speaker 1: You don't what about your friends when I when we
- 49:27Speaker 1: work together, But when you're in the club, have you
- 49:29Speaker 1: gone out and seen somebody on stage where you're like okay?
- 49:31Speaker 1: Or you just hang out in the bath room. No.
- 49:33Speaker 1: The only reason why, I mean, I'll hang sometime, but
- 49:35Speaker 1: I hear a little bit and go because see, I
- 49:37Speaker 1: don't write. So when you're on right and you're coming
- 49:40Speaker 1: off of your head, you want to keep your thoughts pure.
- 49:43Speaker 1: You don't want to hear somebody else and watch theirs
- 49:46Speaker 1: and then's I constantly think you came up with it.
- 49:49Speaker 1: So the way to keep it that way from me
- 49:51Speaker 1: is I don't listen to nobody. That's so every joke
- 49:54Speaker 1: to come out of me came out of me. There's
- 49:57Speaker 1: no way I could have because I don't. I don't listen.
- 50:00Speaker 1: I feel like you're the jay Z rap. You know
- 50:02Speaker 1: you hear how jay Z like wraps in he doesn't
- 50:05Speaker 1: write his stuff. That's how you are, Yeah, the same way.
- 50:08Speaker 1: When I heard that from like Damn, that's that's why
- 50:11Speaker 1: you know, I said, we come to the same formally
- 50:15Speaker 1: to get our product by saying manufacturing way to come
- 50:20Speaker 1: to release talent. And it has always been that way
- 50:25Speaker 1: for me. I have never I tried it when I
- 50:27Speaker 1: first got into comedy, writing it down and rehearsing it
- 50:32Speaker 1: and to think about a joke. For me, it's not
- 50:36Speaker 1: gonna be. I just had to let it flow. So
- 50:38Speaker 1: you don't have to practice practice practice, I know, you know.
- 50:40Speaker 1: What I have to do is just be the best
- 50:42Speaker 1: of me and then take one take quick. But what
- 50:47Speaker 1: it is is like when I was doing for my
- 50:49Speaker 1: legendary show, I mean taping, I just said, I let's
- 50:54Speaker 1: let's let's just get shot and then give me what
- 50:58Speaker 1: day I'm be there and I'm gonna be my shoppers
- 51:02Speaker 1: and then I deal with the result. What I do,
- 51:05Speaker 1: it's not I don't I don't try to sicco certain
- 51:11Speaker 1: perfection on what they that is not what I just
- 51:14Speaker 1: try to be the best I can, the funniest I can,
- 51:17Speaker 1: and then you tape it and I deal with the
- 51:19Speaker 1: results of that. After being in this game a long time,
- 51:23Speaker 1: do you see it as work? No? I mean, like,
- 51:27Speaker 1: are there moments where you're like, oh, I gotta go
- 51:28Speaker 1: on the road, because of course, I mean it's the
- 51:31Speaker 1: occupational hasn't. Let's see my guard. It is so good
- 51:34Speaker 1: to me. He's instantly shows me where I could be
- 51:38Speaker 1: like I was one time. I was feeling that way,
- 51:40Speaker 1: and then I've seen this homeless dude. I swear that
- 51:42Speaker 1: motherfucker looked like me. Let's damn that look at me
- 51:46Speaker 1: out there thinking that cut damn trash shop looked like me,
- 51:49Speaker 1: had my mannerism, had my swag. I you know, of
- 51:55Speaker 1: course he was. He was not doing well. But I
- 51:59Speaker 1: looked at him and I seen him, and then it
- 52:01Speaker 1: made me say thanks again and gave me back to
- 52:04Speaker 1: where I'm usually at. Gratitude. I'm so gratified. I'm just
- 52:07Speaker 1: the gratitude. I imagine you're on the road a lot
- 52:11Speaker 1: and I'm almost rapping. I know, guys, um, I imagine
- 52:14Speaker 1: you're on the road a lot as a comic. What
- 52:17Speaker 1: do you do to pass the time? Sleep? No, damn it, man,
- 52:23Speaker 1: I believe in rest. I don't care, but nobody say.
- 52:26Speaker 1: I guess my rest is very important there. I'm not
- 52:31Speaker 1: know Christopher Columbus and what I mean. But I don't
- 52:34Speaker 1: just go out and explore ship. I mean, Dallas text
- 52:37Speaker 1: let me see what you didn't do that at any
- 52:40Speaker 1: point in your career? No another do um? I don't like.
- 52:45Speaker 1: I go to different things if I'm invited, but other
- 52:48Speaker 1: than that, I'm resting getting ready for work. It's like
- 52:53Speaker 1: a fight, man, I once because she since I don't write,
- 52:56Speaker 1: I have to protect my environment because the wrong ship
- 53:00Speaker 1: to throw me off, and then I'll be talking about
- 53:02Speaker 1: that all night. So I already know is so I
- 53:04Speaker 1: have to I have to keep it still sanitized. I
- 53:07Speaker 1: have to keep my my mood great and when it
- 53:11Speaker 1: needs to be. And that's why I'm talking on the
- 53:13Speaker 1: phone four hours before a show. So I don't want
- 53:16Speaker 1: you to mess with my my point of view. Yeah,
- 53:19Speaker 1: I could get protecting that mind space, especially if you're
- 53:22Speaker 1: not writing, and you have to protect that energy. You
- 53:25Speaker 1: don't want anything to put like you don't want to
- 53:26Speaker 1: get in a fight or argument with someone right before
- 53:28Speaker 1: you go, Oh, I didn't when I was married, man,
- 53:30Speaker 1: and I'll be up there talking nothing about the marriage
- 53:33Speaker 1: the whole So I'm like, damn, I don't see the
- 53:36Speaker 1: light come on because of light indicate you that did
- 53:38Speaker 1: your time? Like damn, its minutes the whole moment. It's
- 53:42Speaker 1: been killing, but the whole thing. And I say to myself,
- 53:45Speaker 1: that ain't even what I wanted to talk about. And
- 53:47Speaker 1: then I even though even though it killed, they killed,
- 53:50Speaker 1: But then I gotta find that point of view again,
- 53:53Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I gotta I gotta will
- 53:56Speaker 1: I was talking about what's that? What else it? Oh yeah, okay,
- 54:00Speaker 1: okay okay, And that's why I take all my shows too.
- 54:02Speaker 1: But anyway, um yeah, so I protected that over the years,
- 54:07Speaker 1: have learned to do that, and it's now it's definitely
- 54:10Speaker 1: I don't talk to nobody because there's big states now yesterday, prices,
- 54:17Speaker 1: you know what, call it my agent. You'll see did
- 54:20Speaker 1: you ever bump into or see or know whatever happened
- 54:23Speaker 1: to that guy that didn't put you up in the club. Yeah,
- 54:27Speaker 1: they're doing a documentary. Asked me to be in it.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Are you serious? I don't say no. I tell anybody,
- 54:39Speaker 1: I'll do anything for you as long as you tell
- 54:41Speaker 1: the facts. As long as you tell the truth, I'll
- 54:44Speaker 1: be a part of your documentary. Say you're the one
- 54:47Speaker 1: they turned quite down and he went and got them,
- 54:49Speaker 1: and I'm being your documentary. Tell the fucking truth. And
- 54:52Speaker 1: are they going to be able to say that you
- 54:53Speaker 1: shut down their club? And I don't know what they say,
- 54:56Speaker 1: but tell the truth. Just whatever I tell that for
- 55:01Speaker 1: any like women, anybody that's in my life, I'll be.
- 55:05Speaker 1: I will participate and your what it, your your book,
- 55:11Speaker 1: your movie, anything that I came because I am never
- 55:15Speaker 1: been ashamed of anything I have done. And I don't
- 55:19Speaker 1: know why what I've done, what I've done and the
- 55:21Speaker 1: things I have done, I had the reason to do it,
- 55:24Speaker 1: and I'm good with it, and everybody else can make
- 55:27Speaker 1: their decision. And I'm the type of person to be
- 55:29Speaker 1: quite honest with you. Nobody's opinions matters to me but God.
- 55:34Speaker 1: And so if me and him cool with it, who
- 55:36Speaker 1: the funk are you? So I don't, I don't. I
- 55:38Speaker 1: don't get caught up in that. And so when he
- 55:40Speaker 1: came with me and asked me to be in there.
- 55:43Speaker 1: I said sure, and I told him the same thing.
- 55:45Speaker 1: I said, down and tell the truth. Long as you
- 55:47Speaker 1: tell the truth. Now, now at blows it off. Say
- 55:51Speaker 1: what you did? And you is? You know you was?
- 55:53Speaker 1: The mother said quite couldn't in there, and and it
- 55:56Speaker 1: was a good move because it had you not did that,
- 55:58Speaker 1: I wouldn't have got my own club. So I'm not
- 56:00Speaker 1: mad at you. Not only I'm not manage you. I
- 56:03Speaker 1: would never be managed you because you don't determine my
- 56:06Speaker 1: futures even with by not letting me perform in your club.
- 56:10Speaker 1: How dare I think something that you did to me
- 56:13Speaker 1: will mark me in my life? You ain't shit, So
- 56:17Speaker 1: I'm not that dude. One thing I noticed about comics,
- 56:21Speaker 1: and this could be an observation that could be totally
- 56:23Speaker 1: wrong with, but some people will say, well, comics are
- 56:26Speaker 1: Maybe some people say comics are sad on the inside
- 56:29Speaker 1: or whatever. I think the common denominator from what I've
- 56:32Speaker 1: seen close up to knowing some being married to one,
- 56:34Speaker 1: having a brother, this one meeting you guys, I feel
- 56:38Speaker 1: like comics are honest. I feel like they love the truth,
- 56:44Speaker 1: like they thrive very well in the truth. I mean,
- 56:47Speaker 1: they put a sarcastic twist, but I feel like, for
- 56:49Speaker 1: some strange reason, they are able to handle the truth
- 56:53Speaker 1: on a significant level, whereas the rest of the world
- 56:56Speaker 1: like how You're like, I just want the truth? Do
- 56:58Speaker 1: you do you feel like that? I mean, some people
- 57:02Speaker 1: call self dedication and you know that what it truly is.
- 57:05Speaker 1: We acknowledge what it is, and we said, that's why
- 57:10Speaker 1: I said, these ain't jokes. From people be laughing at
- 57:13Speaker 1: the stuff I said, I'd be like, these ain't jokes.
- 57:16Speaker 1: But comics are some of the most hurt people in
- 57:18Speaker 1: the world, and a lot of no they are. Is
- 57:23Speaker 1: it because they're dealing in truth, well, dealing with there.
- 57:26Speaker 1: What I personally feel is they're dealing with their shortcomings
- 57:31Speaker 1: and their paying and they're sharing it. And the best
- 57:35Speaker 1: way it's didn't laying on the couch telling one person
- 57:37Speaker 1: and being charged a hundred dollars an hour. They were
- 57:41Speaker 1: ever stand on the stage and tell all y'all, charge
- 57:43Speaker 1: y'all a hundred dollars an hour. Wow, that's interesting. That's
- 57:47Speaker 1: a good way to look at it makes sense. Yeah,
- 57:50Speaker 1: lay on this couch another person who don't know you
- 57:53Speaker 1: read some books using your generosity, I mean generalization of
- 57:57Speaker 1: what do you think you is? What the diagnosed? Or
- 58:03Speaker 1: stand on that motherfucker and let it all. Y'all say
- 58:05Speaker 1: hear it? And I sit there and I reanalyzed it myself.
- 58:09Speaker 1: I ain't get paid for it. That's just our point
- 58:12Speaker 1: of view on it. I don't you know, I know
- 58:15Speaker 1: this mother a PhD. But ship, we'll make him smarty.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Don't know me, motherfucker. You don't know what it is
- 58:22Speaker 1: to have your brother do this to your brother, do
- 58:24Speaker 1: this to me speculating, Well, let me get all these people,
- 58:29Speaker 1: let them here and laugh at it. We're laugh at
- 58:30Speaker 1: my ship together, and I get paid for free drinks
- 58:34Speaker 1: and food. I remever take this one with that one.
- 58:39Speaker 1: And if I need medication, who got the cocaine? Got
- 58:42Speaker 1: the practice action? Because we find our own the liquor
- 58:46Speaker 1: and the rest of it. And um what I'm saying
- 58:49Speaker 1: is to um medicate. You know, I don't demons like
- 58:53Speaker 1: everybody else, so self prescribed. We don't go to the
- 58:58Speaker 1: doctor and go to CVS. We go see old Lego
- 59:02Speaker 1: in the bag with the ball. Yeah, I mean that
- 59:05Speaker 1: that that kind of sucks over. Yeah, that's life. I
- 59:08Speaker 1: mean a lot of my funers ain't going with this.
- 59:11Speaker 1: Just say they suppress it, camouflage, they deny it. Then
- 59:18Speaker 1: you want to choking you at three o'clock in the morning,
- 59:22Speaker 1: well before we close out out the stage, tod you,
- 59:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna choke it out and get on my net um.
- 59:33Speaker 1: What advice would you give to any comics trying to
- 59:36Speaker 1: get in the game, Be original and work anywhere that
- 59:44Speaker 1: you can work. You mean in comedy or like burking, No,
- 59:50Speaker 1: in comedy. Like for me, I used to go to bands,
- 59:54Speaker 1: you know, they had live bands, you know, band take
- 59:57Speaker 1: a break. I used to go to the the bar
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: like hey man with a band, take a prey. I
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: tell these jokes and entertain them, and it's changed for
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: fifty dollars something to drink this and and that's what
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: I do. So it gave me more stage, more different
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: than different crowds, different formers, different lists, and that I
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: got a drink, got fifty dollars every back. Then all
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: the hotels had bands and ship like that, you know,
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: a little them sing and all that, Hello, We'll take
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: a break to be right back with you. I go
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: in there and saying, let me do it. That's how
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: I did it. That's what I tell him. Anywhere, that
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: you can stand on stage and develop your craft among
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: people who don't that you will never come in in
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: there or in that life without you being on that stage.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: That's the best one because you'll find out your talent
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: is universal and it could be you can go anywhere.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: That's brilliant advice. I'm sure a lot of comics would
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: not think to do that. Well, they don't want to worry. See,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: I'm a thirty knight. I'm a thirty year overnight sensation.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Overnight success in thirty years.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: That's a long time. Thirty years. I mean you're thirty eight.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: I mean he was eight when I did it, you
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: know what I mean. I was gonna spend these thirty
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: years doing something, So why not this? You know what
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I mean? The person told me a long time ago.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: My mom used to say so. The friends said, uh, well,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: I was gonna go get my low degree time I
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: get finished. And I had the sixty five and my
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: mother said, well, how old would you be without it?
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Your mom's dope. She said, well, ain't it better to
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: be sixty five with it than without it? Because you're
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: gonna be sixty five periods shout out. So she was like,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: what you mean too late? It is never too late
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: or it took too long. This was gonna be the
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: time anywhere. This is what she was doing in the
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: time that God has giving you. So I never ever
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: looked at it was too late. And the greatest thing
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: about it, I always knew. The money never go down.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Uh they supposed to. We started at free. No, whatever,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: they can get the next dude who the top monther
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: get mold than that. That's how it works. It works
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: that way and entertainment, so the money go down. So
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: you have to be honest with yourself and see them
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: and say, hey, am I'm not as funny as they are.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: And if you feel you all and you just be
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: cool too, they come to your name till it's your turn.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: They call the eaves. But what if someone doesn't feel
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: like they're amongst the great yet, like they're just starting
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: out there? Like media, you know, you don't have to
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: be great. You just have to be confident and your
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: greatness it's not um validated by commercial success such as
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: TV show, movies and Arenas I tell the comedians all
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: the time, quality is not quantity. Quality is not quantity.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: In other words, just because one got ten thousand people
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: don't mean it's a better comment than me and my
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: three other people. Yeah, I'm just as funny as this mother.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: It's just more people know about him than I do,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: so I never look at him. You know, you know,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: quantity is not quality. Just because you can bring thirty
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: thou people to come and see you don't mean you're
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: a better coming for me that I can only bring
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: three hundred. Yeah, that's true. It's just that you got
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: a better way of getting out to the people to
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: let them know you, to come see you, to see that.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: And if we look deep in it, somewhere along the line,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: you had an opportunity that you cast in which opportunity
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I didn't. That didn't give me on the high level
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: for them to see that I too have the same
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: qualities that you have to justify the same quantity. You know,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: quality of people to come and see me. So you
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: keep your quality up and eventually you'll get the quality
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: it ac come and and and the best advice I
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: can give you, this ain't the reason you get in
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: the game. To be a comedian is your first thing.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: I just want to make people laugh. And if you
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: achieve that, then you are all that. You said that reason,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: that's the only reason laugh. That's what the community is.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna make you laugh. The money comes along with it.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I have friends all the time. I tell them, if
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: you put as much time as you do and the
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: women as you put in your jokes, you will be
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: a star. Women are the result of the joke, not
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: the motivation for the joke. So a lot of communities
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: get on stage just to get the women. No, you
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: get on stage to be funny. The result of being
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: funny equals the woman. You don't get up there, let
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: me be funny, so the woman come get you. And
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: most of them comedians never win because they lose when
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: I say the essence of it, just to be funny,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: when you're just sitting in your bathroom with them, with
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: your tooth for us telling the joke and the murdering,
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: sitting down and you were just waiting at that point
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: for it to be funny. I drove from my house
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: all the way down to this club, put my name
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: on the list, waiting, you know, saying you're joking your
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: mind a thousand times. It's gonna work. And this is
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: how it gonna be and you get up there and
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: they work this ship right. Then one minute turned to
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: two minutes. That's what you're in for ever return for
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: doing that at a higher level, then all the other
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: actually all other things come not right first. Man, I
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: gotta be a comic, so I can't get me a
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: te huge in them, and those usually fizzle on down. Wow. Wow,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: you're deep. Legends are deep. Well, thank you so much
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: for coming and blessing the set, feeding me a grill
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: cheese sandwich, class sick, and dropping some true gems. Now,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: I'm not going to become a comic, but I'm definitely
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: going to be checking out your show. If you all
