- 0:00Speaker 1: And a new interview. President Trump tells sixty minutes he
- 0:02Speaker 1: will not negotiate with Democrats about rising healthcare costs until
- 0:06Speaker 1: they give Republicans the votes needed to end the shutdown.
- 0:10Speaker 2: You have helped end these government shutdowns in the past
- 0:13Speaker 2: when it came about, and you did it by bringing it.
- 0:15Speaker 3: They're good at it.
- 0:16Speaker 4: But I'm not going to do it by I'm not
- 0:18Speaker 4: going to do it by extrution. I'm not going to
- 0:20Speaker 4: do it by being extorted by the Democrats who have
- 0:22Speaker 4: lost their way.
- 0:23Speaker 5: Sounds like it's not going to get solved.
- 0:24Speaker 4: The shutdown. It's going to get solf you. Oh, it's
- 0:26Speaker 4: going to get sold. How we'll get it shub. Eventually
- 0:29Speaker 4: they're going to have to vote.
- 0:31Speaker 1: So that was the president's first interview with CBS since
- 0:33Speaker 1: he sued the network over what he called the deceptive
- 0:36Speaker 1: doctrine of an October twenty twenty four interview with Kamala Harris.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Let's go live right now to see it, as Chief
- 0:42Speaker 3: media analyst Brian Stelter, Brian, thanks so much for joining
- 0:45Speaker 3: a CBS News air. At about a third of that
- 0:47Speaker 3: interview on TV, they posted the rest online. What stood
- 0:52Speaker 3: out to you.
- 0:53Speaker 5: The most well, Number one, the lack of answers on
- 0:56Speaker 5: some key subjects that Trump rarely agrees to an in
- 0:59Speaker 5: depth interview like this, and maybe we're all seeing why
- 1:02Speaker 5: Trump had little to say. When Norah O'Donnell brought up
- 1:05Speaker 5: people living paycheck to paycheck and struggling with rising costs,
- 1:08Speaker 5: he suggested people should blame his presensor, Joe Biden, and
- 1:11Speaker 5: he made generic pledges about fixing healthcare and lowering the
- 1:14Speaker 5: price of gas. But he did have a very clear
- 1:16Speaker 5: answer when O'Donnell brought up the public shock about recent
- 1:19Speaker 5: videos of ice raids in cities like Chicago. Here's what
- 1:22Speaker 5: Trump said.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Well, I think they haven't gone far enough because we've
- 1:26Speaker 4: been held back by the judges, by the liberal judges
- 1:30Speaker 4: that were put in by Biden and by Obama. You're
- 1:33Speaker 4: okay with those tactics, yeah, because you have to get
- 1:35Speaker 4: the people out.
- 1:39Speaker 5: The president suggesting that ice officials should go even further
- 1:42Speaker 5: in those raids a really striking comment given what we've
- 1:45Speaker 5: seen from the new CNN polling about Trump's overall disapproval
- 1:49Speaker 5: and about many Americans discomfort with those immigration enforcement tactics.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Well, of course, Brian, this sit down comes with CBS
- 1:58Speaker 1: one year after the President filled out law suit against
- 2:00Speaker 1: sixty Minutes over its pre election interview with Kamala Harris.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I know you report on that extensively. During the interview,
- 2:06Speaker 1: he praised the new leadership of Paramount and CBS News.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Let's listen to that.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Sixty Minutes paid me a lot of money, and you
- 2:16Speaker 4: don't have to put this on because I don't want
- 2:18Speaker 4: to embarrass you, and I'm sure you're not. You have
- 2:20Speaker 4: a great I think you have a great new leader, frankly,
- 2:23Speaker 4: because the young woman that's leading your whole enterprise is
- 2:26Speaker 4: a great from what I know, I don't know about here,
- 2:29Speaker 4: she's a great prision.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So, between the lawsuit, public attacks and threats against CBS
- 2:35Speaker 1: station licenses, the President's tone towards the network seems to
- 2:38Speaker 1: have definitely taken a turn here, Brian.
- 2:41Speaker 5: Yes, very much.
- 2:42Speaker 6: So.
- 2:43Speaker 5: It is clear Trump is making it explicit he wants
- 2:45Speaker 5: these media owners, CEOs and leaders to be on his
- 2:49Speaker 5: side in his corner, in his camp. He punishes those
- 2:52Speaker 5: who are perceived to not be on his side any
- 2:54Speaker 5: rewards and flatters those he perceives to be his friends
- 2:57Speaker 5: and allies. In that clip, he references Marry Weiss, the
- 3:00Speaker 5: new editor in chief of CBS tho CBS News, although
- 3:03Speaker 5: not by name, he referred to being a great individual.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Weiss arrived just a few weeks ago, actually after this
- 3:09Speaker 5: interview had already been booked by CBS. But there's been
- 3:11Speaker 5: a lot of intrigue about Weiss and new Paramount CEO
- 3:14Speaker 5: David Ellison, and whether they are taking steps to ingratiate
- 3:17Speaker 5: themselves with the administration. Ellison donated to Biden last year,
- 3:21Speaker 5: but he did show up at UFC matches earlier this
- 3:23Speaker 5: year schmoozing with Trump's aides, and he also agreed to
- 3:27Speaker 5: hire an unbudsman at CBS, So there's been a lot
- 3:29Speaker 5: of intrigue about whether Paramount is trying to shift in
- 3:32Speaker 5: some ways or soften to appease the Trump administration. Ellison
- 3:36Speaker 5: is currently trying to buy CNN's parent company, Warner Brothers
- 3:39Speaker 5: Discovery to create an even bigger media empire, and so
- 3:42Speaker 5: far Warner's board has rebuffed Ellison's offers. It is telling
- 3:46Speaker 5: that so many reviewers and commenters about the sixteen Minutes
- 3:49Speaker 5: episode noticed the editing last night, because it was the
- 3:53Speaker 5: editing of the Harris interview that President Trump objected to
- 3:56Speaker 5: this time last year. Let me show you what Senate
- 3:58Speaker 5: Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on it on X overnight.
- 4:01Speaker 5: He said, maybe I should go ahead and file an
- 4:03Speaker 5: FCC complain about the editing of this interview. I'll use
- 4:06Speaker 5: the exact same language Trump lodged against Harris. At the
- 4:10Speaker 5: end of the day, this interview in sixty minutes was
- 4:13Speaker 5: edited for time, just like any network would normally do.
- 4:16Speaker 5: And I would argue Trump actually benefited from the edits
- 4:19Speaker 5: because it cleaned up some of his meandering comments and
- 4:22Speaker 5: his false claims. BAM.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Well, all right, Brian Stelzer giving a s excellent analysis
- 4:27Speaker 3: as usual. Thank you, very very.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Much, Stace. Sarah Fisher joins me now live in New York. Sarah,
- 4:32Speaker 2: A lot has transpired, including new ownership, following that twenty
- 4:36Speaker 2: twenty four CBS interview with Kamala Harris. So what is
- 4:39Speaker 2: the significance of the President now sitting down with the
- 4:41Speaker 2: same program that he sued and attacked, and what is
- 4:45Speaker 2: it saying? What is he saying about the interview today?
- 4:49Speaker 7: It suggests that the new owners of Paramount, the concessions
- 4:53Speaker 7: that they made Beyona to get this deal approved to
- 4:56Speaker 7: buy the company have appeased Donald Trump and the now
- 5:00Speaker 7: many things have occurred in the past few weeks since
- 5:03Speaker 7: that deal closed on August seventh. As Donald Trump mentioned,
- 5:06Speaker 7: they brought in a new editor in chief, a woman
- 5:08Speaker 7: named Barry Rice, who runs a blog called The Free Press.
- 5:12Speaker 7: They acquired that company it is considered to be much
- 5:15Speaker 7: more favorable to certain conservative ideals than CBS. Necessarily, they
- 5:22Speaker 7: canceled the Late Show with Steve Colbert that will go
- 5:24Speaker 7: off air next year. Many CBS's Sixty Minutes staffers have
- 5:29Speaker 7: protested about what they say has been overreached and a
- 5:33Speaker 7: lack of editorial independence at that show. And so Donald
- 5:36Speaker 7: Trump sitting down with CBS praising its new leadership, suggests
- 5:41Speaker 7: that they're happy with the changes in the concessions that
- 5:43Speaker 7: have been made. And of course it's puzzling to the
- 5:45Speaker 7: media community who worries that in order to get any
- 5:48Speaker 7: deal done in the media industry now you have to
- 5:51Speaker 7: make these types of const changes, if you will, to
- 5:56Speaker 7: sort of suck up to the administration.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And he's speaking out about that interview today. I believe
- 6:02Speaker 2: he posted on truth Social already. Obviously the issues that
- 6:06Speaker 2: he had with their previous interview with Kamala Harris was
- 6:10Speaker 2: what he thought was editing that he didn't think met
- 6:14Speaker 2: editorial standards. There has been a lot of pushback to that. Nonetheless,
- 6:18Speaker 2: CBS did agree to a significant amount of money in
- 6:22Speaker 2: terms of settling that deal. What is he's saying about
- 6:25Speaker 2: the interview today in the way that it's been published, Well.
- 6:28Speaker 7: He's much happier about it. I mean, the thing is,
- 6:31Speaker 7: when it comes to what happened with Kamala Harris, he
- 6:33Speaker 7: leveraged that interview to say that CBS engaged in essentially
- 6:39Speaker 7: voter interference. That then turned into an SEC investigation around
- 6:43Speaker 7: news fairness, and CBS ultimately settled sixteen million dollars with
- 6:48Speaker 7: him over it. Now fast forward to where we are today,
- 6:51Speaker 7: some of Donald Trump's most puzzling answers to that interview
- 6:54Speaker 7: did not actually air in the twenty something minutes on
- 6:57Speaker 7: CBS's broadcast. So you have Democrats now coming out and saying,
- 7:01Speaker 7: wait a minute, shouldn't we be filing complaints with the
- 7:03Speaker 7: SCC that this interview was edited in a distorting way.
- 7:07Speaker 7: It's kind of like the flip this script has flipped.
- 7:10Speaker 7: If you will be on a But ultimately, I don't
- 7:13Speaker 7: think anything gets actually done about it. You have a
- 7:17Speaker 7: Republican led SCC. You had the chairman of the FCC
- 7:21Speaker 7: responding to Chuck Sumer today who says that he should
- 7:24Speaker 7: file a complaint, basically saying good luck with that. And
- 7:28Speaker 7: you know, maybe a consumer group could try to sue
- 7:32Speaker 7: to try to get something done, but I think that's
- 7:35Speaker 7: highly unlikely that it goes anywhere.
- 7:37Speaker 2: All right, Sarah Fisher, always good to see you, Thank you.
- 7:40Speaker 6: I want to listen to this exchange between Nora O'Donnell
- 7:42Speaker 6: in sixty minutes and the President when she was pushing
- 7:45Speaker 6: him on grocery prices being higher.
- 7:50Speaker 2: They've seen their grocery prices go up inflation.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Oh you're wrong. They went up under Biden. Right now
- 7:55Speaker 4: they're going down other than beef, which we're working on,
- 7:57Speaker 4: which we can solve very quickly.
- 8:00Speaker 6: She's not wrong. David nor was right. Met He was
- 8:04Speaker 6: right about fruits and vegetables, baked goods, dairy. One thing
- 8:08Speaker 6: that has gone downs eggs, which is a good thing.
- 8:11Speaker 6: But according to his own government data, things are going up.
- 8:16Speaker 6: And again we don't need the data. Anybody who goes
- 8:18Speaker 6: to the grocery store. We all feel it.
- 8:20Speaker 8: Yeah, there's no doubt about it. And obviously, as you
- 8:25Speaker 8: and I have talked about a lot here, to me,
- 8:27Speaker 8: the economy, it's the ballgame here because it's where so
- 8:30Speaker 8: many voters are in terms of their priority obviously their
- 8:34Speaker 8: daily lived experience, but it's also where he has leaned
- 8:37Speaker 8: in to policy with the terrorists and China in such
- 8:42Speaker 8: an unprecedented and really aggressive way that doesn't seem to
- 8:46Speaker 8: be capturing and working for people. They don't see that
- 8:49Speaker 8: as a real success yet. I know this is going
- 8:52Speaker 8: to go before the Supreme Court this week, but to me,
- 8:54Speaker 8: the combination of yes, these are the economic factors at play,
- 8:58Speaker 8: but he's taken very pacific policies here that are not
- 9:02Speaker 8: catching on with the American people
