- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark review podcast. I'm
- 0:13Speaker 1: Megan and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan. I'm Wendy. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: a former Hallmark hater. On today's episode, we are discussing
- 0:19Speaker 1: Kentucky Roses, which originally premiered on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday,
- 0:23Speaker 1: May twid and is currently available to stream on Hallmark Plus.
- 0:28Speaker 1: If you love Girls Gone Hallmark, I never want to
- 0:30Speaker 1: miss an episode from us. You should be following us
- 0:32Speaker 1: on Instagram, where, among other things, we do drop our
- 0:35Speaker 1: weekly schedule, and for even more regular communication from us,
- 0:39Speaker 1: you can sign up for our newsletter at Girls Gone
- 0:42Speaker 1: Hallmark dot com. Hey, we would love to hear from you.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Email us at Hello at Girls Gone Hallmark dot com.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We are dying to hear what you thought about Kentucky
- 0:51Speaker 1: Roses or anything else happening in Hallmark. Speaking of Kentucky Roses,
- 0:58Speaker 1: let's hear a synopsis. A greenhouse worker and the son
- 1:01Speaker 1: of Churchill Down's CEO form an unlikely pair coming together
- 1:07Speaker 1: to save the Kentucky Derby Rose Blanket and uncovering a
- 1:11Speaker 1: generational love story along the way. Here are my thoughts
- 1:16Speaker 1: on this synopsis. It's not technically correct. These two don't
- 1:21Speaker 1: come to get First of all, they're not an unlikely
- 1:24Speaker 1: pair one two. They don't come together to save the
- 1:27Speaker 1: Kentucky Derby with the rose blanket like he has like enough,
- 1:31Speaker 1: he has kind of something to do with it. But
- 1:33Speaker 1: they're not like drives are all over the place. Yeah,
- 1:35Speaker 1: I mean, that's not come on. I know, I know,
- 1:38Speaker 1: I think there could be a better synopsis here, because
- 1:41Speaker 1: this is not doing it. While Kentucky Roses was directed
- 1:44Speaker 1: by Claire Neediprum, who probably didn't write the synopsis, Claire
- 1:47Speaker 1: has twenty two directing credits with some of our homemark favorites,
- 1:51Speaker 1: including a Grand Old Aubrey, Christmas Villa Amorey and Savoring Paris.
- 1:55Speaker 1: You know who did write the synopsis? Who? I'm sure
- 2:00Speaker 1: chat GPT wrote it. Oh and seventy just copy and paste.
- 2:06Speaker 1: The script comes from Jamie Paccino. Jamie has thirty writing credits,
- 2:10Speaker 1: including several television series as well as several Hallmark movies.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Andrew Walker stars as Ash Taylor. We all know Andrew
- 2:17Speaker 1: from The Three Wisest Men and She's making a list.
- 2:20Speaker 1: This movie marks his ninety fourth acting credit. Odette Annabelle
- 2:24Speaker 1: stars as Sadie Moore. Odette has been in projects like
- 2:27Speaker 1: Supergirl as well as four seasons of Walker. This is
- 2:32Speaker 1: her first Hallmark movie. Gimmick Girls fans will recognize Greg
- 2:35Speaker 1: Henry as Frank reid Ash's dad. For a complete cast list,
- 2:40Speaker 1: please visit our website at Girls Gone Hallmark dot com.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Hey Wendy, what was your first impression of Kentucky roses?
- 2:48Speaker 1: Andrew Walker didn't just move the needle, He shattered this
- 2:53Speaker 1: smoucho meter with this one. Oh wow is up? It's
- 2:58Speaker 1: you know, we'll talk about it. I agree. When you
- 3:03Speaker 1: texted me like smoochimeter ten, I was like, I rewatched
- 3:06Speaker 1: the movie yesterday and I was like that might be
- 3:08Speaker 1: a twelve out of ten for me for real, And
- 3:11Speaker 1: I'm not talking. Well, okay, we'll talk about it. Okay,
- 3:14Speaker 1: it's in my likes. Definitely. My first impression is Andrew
- 3:17Speaker 1: Walker should have slow dancing as a requirement in all
- 3:20Speaker 1: of his movie. Oh I love that one. I love
- 3:23Speaker 1: it and I hard agree. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yes, Well
- 3:28Speaker 1: let's talk what we liked first. I just want to
- 3:31Speaker 1: overall say like I really enjoyed this movie, like I
- 3:35Speaker 1: watched it, no phone distraction, I just there was something
- 3:40Speaker 1: different about it in terms of like an elevated way
- 3:45Speaker 1: that I can't quite articulate yet, but I just thought
- 3:48Speaker 1: it was really good. I agree. I think it was
- 3:52Speaker 1: very well done. I was I was, I want to say,
- 3:55Speaker 1: pleasantly surprised. I don't know why I felt surprised when
- 3:58Speaker 1: I first watched it, but this movie was probably one
- 4:01Speaker 1: of the first advanced announcements we got this year about
- 4:05Speaker 1: what Hallmark was working on. And sometimes that's a big
- 4:10Speaker 1: exciting thing when we get an early announcement, and sometimes
- 4:12Speaker 1: I worry that maybe we're overhyped. I'm like, there's a
- 4:17Speaker 1: lot of brand partnerships happening with Mark lately, like Disney
- 4:22Speaker 1: and the NFL, and now we have the Kentucky Derby,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and so I was worried, but I was it's I
- 4:30Speaker 1: think this is an absolute must watch. I agree. Here's
- 4:34Speaker 1: my true thoughts on this type of movie. Last year,
- 4:39Speaker 1: we had a similar fictional horse race movie, uh huh,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and overall wasn't like that great the Hat movie. Yeah,
- 4:49Speaker 1: the Hat movie. This movie, like this is how you
- 4:53Speaker 1: do like a horse race movie in my opinion, very
- 4:57Speaker 1: little focus on the horses. Yes one, I mean, we
- 5:00Speaker 1: did have a horse story a part of it which
- 5:04Speaker 1: I liked, and I will talk about that in a
- 5:05Speaker 1: second too, But what I liked about it was that
- 5:10Speaker 1: this movie pulls us in to the world of the
- 5:14Speaker 1: Kentucky Derby, specifically like the artistry behind it that we got,
- 5:20Speaker 1: the landscaping, the flowers, the iconic rose blanket, all of
- 5:24Speaker 1: it feels intentional and genuinely interesting to someone like me
- 5:28Speaker 1: who loves like gardening and design. Like all this kind
- 5:32Speaker 1: of detail was like catnip to me as someone who
- 5:37Speaker 1: loves that kind of stuff. So from the jump, I
- 5:40Speaker 1: was like, very excited, and I kind of wish I
- 5:44Speaker 1: knew it was going to be kind of about the
- 5:47Speaker 1: behind the scenes of it all before going into the movie,
- 5:50Speaker 1: I might have been more excited. So I was pleasantly surprised.
- 5:57Speaker 1: But the biggest thing that I loved piggybacking off of
- 6:03Speaker 1: this is that it highlighted something we don't often think about.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Like everybody shows up for Derby Day for the hats
- 6:09Speaker 1: and the mint jewel lips and the horse racing and
- 6:11Speaker 1: all that stuff, but there is like this visual magic
- 6:14Speaker 1: of Churchill downs that doesn't just happen. It's like a
- 6:17Speaker 1: team of people who do it and maybe who don't
- 6:19Speaker 1: get recognized for it, and I just thought it was awesome.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I totally agree with you. I liked in the opening
- 6:25Speaker 1: of the movie we get like b roll of Kentucky
- 6:28Speaker 1: Derby's past. I loved that. And then they really do
- 6:32Speaker 1: a good job of telling the whole story surrounding the Derby.
- 6:36Speaker 1: And sometimes when we have movies that are focused on
- 6:40Speaker 1: real events, they'll have like weird exposition, but they just
- 6:43Speaker 1: wove all of those little events in. You know, when
- 6:46Speaker 1: you have thunder over Louisville that was done in a
- 6:49Speaker 1: really fun, sweet way, and all the other small events
- 6:53Speaker 1: leading up to the Derby. They even talk about the Oaks, which,
- 6:56Speaker 1: by the way, after you and I recorded the other day,
- 6:59Speaker 1: when I was wearing my Kentucky Derby T shirt from
- 7:01Speaker 1: the Andrew Walker collection, I went to Costco and when
- 7:05Speaker 1: I was in Costco, the guy in front of me
- 7:06Speaker 1: turns around He's like, oh, Derby's this weekend. I was like, yeah,
- 7:09Speaker 1: I know, and then he's like, yeah, there's another race
- 7:12Speaker 1: on tonight, the Oaks. And I was like, oh no,
- 7:14Speaker 1: You're like, I don't EnL like anything you're talking about. Fortunately,
- 7:17Speaker 1: this guy was like schmoozing everybody in line at Hosco,
- 7:20Speaker 1: so he didn't focus on me for too long. I
- 7:22Speaker 1: didn't know how to be like, I'm just here for
- 7:23Speaker 1: the homewark of it all. But there are people who
- 7:26Speaker 1: are so enmeshed in this world and I think this
- 7:28Speaker 1: did I think this? What's the word of they did?
- 7:31Speaker 1: Write by the Kentucky Derby And for me, not someone
- 7:34Speaker 1: who knows a whole lot about the experience beyond the
- 7:36Speaker 1: hats exactly, I was like, Oh, this would be such
- 7:39Speaker 1: a fun event. Oh, actually, did my parents My parents
- 7:44Speaker 1: were recently in Louisville, like last year? Did they go?
- 7:48Speaker 1: I think they got a tour? Actually, And I was like,
- 7:51Speaker 1: how fun would that be? Now thinking about it, I'm like,
- 7:54Speaker 1: that would be so fun. Yeah, does the tour take
- 7:57Speaker 1: you to the Greenhouse? I don't know. I'm gonna have
- 8:00Speaker 1: to ask them. Now, I don't think they got a
- 8:02Speaker 1: tour now, I'm thinking they got a tour of something else,
- 8:05Speaker 1: like Louisville's Slugger the Baseball Factory. Oh uh huh, so
- 8:10Speaker 1: you know, totally different a little bit. This feels like
- 8:14Speaker 1: a fun destination spot. Yeah, what's happening at Churchill Downs?
- 8:18Speaker 1: Throughout the year. I don't know. I think they have
- 8:21Speaker 1: other horse races there throughout the yearly, just not the
- 8:24Speaker 1: big one, you know. Can we talk about horse racing
- 8:27Speaker 1: for a second. Sure? So horse racing makes me a
- 8:30Speaker 1: little uncomfortable, I'll be honest, not my favorite sport. I
- 8:34Speaker 1: really appreciated that even though this movie takes place around
- 8:39Speaker 1: an iconic horse race, there's very little actual horse racing involved.
- 8:43Speaker 1: That really worked for me. Like we see the horses,
- 8:45Speaker 1: we see the companion goats, there's lots of talk about,
- 8:47Speaker 1: you know, rehabilitating retired race horses. I loved all of
- 8:52Speaker 1: that and I was like, Okay, I can handle one
- 8:54Speaker 1: race on my screen. Yeah. I think that was a
- 8:56Speaker 1: smart move by Hallmark making this considering people who are
- 9:01Speaker 1: one who are just not into the sport, but two
- 9:03Speaker 1: who feel weird about it like us. I think that
- 9:06Speaker 1: was really smart, and it is like a super different
- 9:09Speaker 1: angle to take because you think it's gonna be a
- 9:11Speaker 1: horse racing movie, right, Yes, Yeah, let's move on. I
- 9:15Speaker 1: thought Odette Annabelle was a freaking standout. She was fantastic.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I thought her performance as Sophie was natural and very
- 9:25Speaker 1: lived in, just a good actor. She wasn't just delivering lines.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I thought she was really making some believable choices, like
- 9:33Speaker 1: in her reactions to things. Yeah, her interactions with her friend,
- 9:37Speaker 1: the way they talk felt very real. Yes, her mom
- 9:42Speaker 1: an adult to an adult you know, adult mom, adult child,
- 9:46Speaker 1: felt very relatable. I thought I would love to see
- 9:50Speaker 1: her in more homework projects. I just I thought she
- 9:52Speaker 1: was great. I was like, she can be. I know
- 9:54Speaker 1: she was like a leading lady in this movie, but
- 9:56Speaker 1: I think she can be a brand name. I think
- 10:01Speaker 1: so too. I hope she sticks around. Loved her, loved her. Oh,
- 10:05Speaker 1: in terms of her character Sophie, I also appreciated that
- 10:08Speaker 1: Sophie had a pass, but it didn't hijack the story. Yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 1: she had an X, but there was no like romantic baggage,
- 10:15Speaker 1: like cluttering things up. It just was like, Okay, this
- 10:18Speaker 1: is where she is in life now. It was acknowledged
- 10:21Speaker 1: and that's it. Loved it. I'm a big fan of
- 10:24Speaker 1: Odett Annabel. I was like, it's it's It makes me
- 10:26Speaker 1: a little nervous when we have a new actor in
- 10:28Speaker 1: one of these movies. She delivered in a big way.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Andrew Walker, It's just a damn delight in this movie. God,
- 10:36Speaker 1: he's on a run right now, don't you think so? Yes,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I do Birding with Benefits, Adventures, Adventures and Birding. Oh yeah,
- 10:45Speaker 1: that's what it was called. That's right. The novel is
- 10:47Speaker 1: called Birding with Benefits is the book, You're right, absolutely,
- 10:50Speaker 1: Adventures in Birding the PG version of Birding and Benefits.
- 10:53Speaker 1: He brought the heat in that movie. He's rising to
- 10:57Speaker 1: the top for me and everyone's like, yeah, duh, he's
- 11:00Speaker 1: like one of the number ones. But he was just
- 11:02Speaker 1: so delightful and he and Odette Annabell have fire chemistry
- 11:07Speaker 1: from day one moment one. And while there is a
- 11:12Speaker 1: little bit like nobody's really supposed to be here after dark,
- 11:15Speaker 1: it's flirtatious. They don't start from a place of contention. Yes,
- 11:19Speaker 1: my husband and I were watching an old fall Hallmark
- 11:21Speaker 1: movie and the lead female character is an actress II
- 11:25Speaker 1: a door, but she's such a shrew through the first
- 11:28Speaker 1: seventy percent of this movie. To the It is Andrew
- 11:31Speaker 1: Walker who's in it, and I was just like, stop it,
- 11:34Speaker 1: stop making these characters behave like this, like this is
- 11:37Speaker 1: not how people behave. And they were so cute and
- 11:40Speaker 1: at the bar when they're both like, oh, what do
- 11:43Speaker 1: I do? I'm gonna I thought that was very real,
- 11:45Speaker 1: Like if the guy that you think is cute shows
- 11:48Speaker 1: up at the bar and you don't know what to
- 11:49Speaker 1: do and you're nervous, and then when his little friend,
- 11:52Speaker 1: Ash's friend gives him like finger guns, when he goes yes,
- 11:55Speaker 1: it was just such a cute little rom com. I
- 11:57Speaker 1: was like, but it means yes romcom. You're right, absolutely,
- 12:02Speaker 1: I agree. I want to touch on Andrew for a
- 12:05Speaker 1: minute and then I'm gonna talk about their chemistry. This
- 12:08Speaker 1: might be one of my favorite performances from Andrew Walker. Yeah,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know, I'm a big fan of jingle Bell Run.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I think that was like the turning point for me.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Sure Kim. He feels very settled and confident on screen
- 12:23Speaker 1: again not just reciting lines, like he's really performing and
- 12:28Speaker 1: it is good to watch, Like it just feels good
- 12:31Speaker 1: to watch. And you know how you're like, oh, people
- 12:34Speaker 1: are like duh. You know, We've watched a lot of
- 12:38Speaker 1: Andrew Walker movies and some of the older ones. Admittedly,
- 12:41Speaker 1: the man is nice to look at, but I do
- 12:43Speaker 1: think like he was a little bit of a one
- 12:45Speaker 1: note delivery in those older films. Something is happening now,
- 12:49Speaker 1: like we're getting nuanced and warmth and characters that actually
- 12:54Speaker 1: react like a real person. For example, the dynamic with
- 12:58Speaker 1: the actors that play his parents in this movie, I
- 13:01Speaker 1: thought were some of my favorite scenes. Back to Greg
- 13:04Speaker 1: Henry as Frank Reid. I'm a huge Gilmore Girls fan.
- 13:09Speaker 1: What is his name? On that show mitcham Huntsburger, he
- 13:12Speaker 1: was giving mitchem Huntsburger light. For sure in this movie
- 13:17Speaker 1: he wasn't as terrible as a human being as Mitcham
- 13:20Speaker 1: Huntsburger is, But there was like that really nice tension
- 13:24Speaker 1: between these two characters, Ash and Frank. The dinner scene
- 13:30Speaker 1: is so good at the beginning of the movie. Agreed,
- 13:34Speaker 1: and I really enjoyed the mom to who always had
- 13:39Speaker 1: her son's back. I just loved it. Loved that and
- 13:44Speaker 1: the character of Ash. I thought, Okay, we got a
- 13:48Speaker 1: napole baby here, but I love the tension of I
- 13:51Speaker 1: don't want special treatment versus this is our family legacy.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Like if I thought it was very believable, not original
- 13:59Speaker 1: by Hallmark, but here in this movie I thought was
- 14:03Speaker 1: was really good. Now my thoughts on their chemistry, like
- 14:06Speaker 1: you're right from the jump, they were so cute together.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Of course we get that little bit of like conflict
- 14:14Speaker 1: towards the end through about the great grandparents' storyline. Yeah,
- 14:18Speaker 1: you know they have like you know, misunderstanding versions of history. Correct,
- 14:24Speaker 1: But what was amazing Like she got annoyed. She didn't
- 14:27Speaker 1: get like heated, or she didn't get too pissed off,
- 14:30Speaker 1: but she was like whatever, ending their conversation. And then
- 14:33Speaker 1: the next day what happens apologies all around? Yes, like
- 14:37Speaker 1: it just gets handled. Everybody makes nice And I mean,
- 14:42Speaker 1: this is what actual adults should be doing. Relationships don't
- 14:47Speaker 1: end over stupid stuff like that. Right, I thought it
- 14:51Speaker 1: was really good. Let me ask you this, How did
- 14:54Speaker 1: you like the dual timeline? I loved it. Tell me more.
- 15:00Speaker 1: My notes say this movie felt longer than an hour
- 15:02Speaker 1: and twenty minutes in the best way. When it ended,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I was like, I don't want it to be over right.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I thought they did a really nice They were telling
- 15:11Speaker 1: a lot of stories in this movie, and I thought
- 15:14Speaker 1: they did them justice. There wasn't it left me wanting more.
- 15:18Speaker 1: But there wasn't a story that I thought, oh, we're
- 15:21Speaker 1: missing a key piece of that for me to understand
- 15:23Speaker 1: what's going on, the writing was done in such a
- 15:26Speaker 1: way that we got a full picture of the Gloria,
- 15:31Speaker 1: the Gig and Charlie storyline, and I got a full
- 15:35Speaker 1: picture of the understanding of Ash's conflict with his parents
- 15:40Speaker 1: and of Sadie's motivations to do her own thing. I
- 15:44Speaker 1: was really all in on the Gig and Charlie of it.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I thought it was very interesting that doesn't really have
- 15:49Speaker 1: a happy ending. I know, and I obviously wouldn't work
- 15:54Speaker 1: because then they would be related. But I thought it
- 15:58Speaker 1: it told a realistic sounding story. Oh right up until
- 16:02Speaker 1: the finding of the blueprints. Of course, that's I'm willing
- 16:05Speaker 1: to accept that bit of serendipity. Same for the sake
- 16:08Speaker 1: of the plot. Same, but I thought otherwise I could
- 16:13Speaker 1: see this man not being strong enough to stand up
- 16:16Speaker 1: for the woman he loves and to give into what
- 16:18Speaker 1: his family wants him to be. Well, you know, you
- 16:21Speaker 1: and I are watching two PBS shows right now, especially
- 16:25Speaker 1: the Foresights, where it's not taking place in the same timeframe,
- 16:30Speaker 1: but it is kind of the same thing, like families, expectations,
- 16:34Speaker 1: and absolutely people who are not deemed good enough to
- 16:38Speaker 1: be together. Yeah, what did you think of Gigi and Charlie?
- 16:41Speaker 1: I loved it. I loved all of it. Yeah, I
- 16:44Speaker 1: thought it was so good. I didn't know what to
- 16:47Speaker 1: expect exactly it was. It was just like a touch.
- 16:51Speaker 1: It just added more context to the story. It wasn't
- 16:53Speaker 1: like we were watching like a totally full other movie
- 16:58Speaker 1: unfold within a movie. You know, they didn't just tell
- 17:02Speaker 1: it through letters and photos. They yes, they filmed those scenes,
- 17:07Speaker 1: which just makes it so much more rich. Yeah. You
- 17:10Speaker 1: know when they have the scenes and each family is
- 17:13Speaker 1: like talking about you know, they're looking through like the
- 17:16Speaker 1: photo album whatever, and they're telling the story, but then
- 17:19Speaker 1: we go back to the like flashback scene or whatever. Yeah,
- 17:23Speaker 1: it just was done so well, so well. Shout out
- 17:26Speaker 1: Claire Nita prom she's fantastic. I don't think she gets
- 17:30Speaker 1: talked to the director. I don't think she gets talked
- 17:32Speaker 1: about enough about being one of the better directors. And
- 17:35Speaker 1: then you look at what she's done. Yeah, you look
- 17:37Speaker 1: at her resume and you're like, well, damn, she's done
- 17:39Speaker 1: a ton of great movies. Absolutely. I have two more
- 17:44Speaker 1: little likes. I loved the Rose Blanket sequence. Okay, first
- 17:48Speaker 1: of all, I love like when like the community comes
- 17:51Speaker 1: together and you know, there's like a common goal and whatever.
- 17:54Speaker 1: But I thought it was really cool. We've kind of
- 17:56Speaker 1: seen that behind the scenes of like how they make
- 17:59Speaker 1: the blanket they're sewing that in. I bet it is
- 18:02Speaker 1: ceremonial like that. I bet they do have somebody who's like, Okay,
- 18:05Speaker 1: you get to sew the first rose in or whatever.
- 18:08Speaker 1: I thought that was so cool. I actually really enjoyed
- 18:12Speaker 1: the spire restoration storyline too, even though it wasn't like
- 18:16Speaker 1: it wasn't like a big player in the Yeah, yeah,
- 18:21Speaker 1: you know, I just I just was genuinely interested at
- 18:25Speaker 1: one point. And this is when I did you see that?
- 18:27Speaker 1: But they had a shot where there looked like there
- 18:30Speaker 1: was scaffolding on the spire and I was like, is
- 18:32Speaker 1: that real or did they do that in like post
- 18:34Speaker 1: production or is that fake scaffolding up there? So you know,
- 18:38Speaker 1: I was very curious. And then the last thing I
- 18:41Speaker 1: liked about this movie is that there's no villain here
- 18:47Speaker 1: in this movie. Hmm, well, hold on, no, I'm agreeing
- 18:52Speaker 1: with you, okay. I just thought the whole movie had
- 18:56Speaker 1: this hopeful tone about like people showing up for each
- 19:00Speaker 1: and people working together towards something and choosing better outcomes.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Like I walked away feeling good about humanity. Yeah, and
- 19:09Speaker 1: that that's why I don't think I wanted it to end.
- 19:12Speaker 1: I just was like, I feel so good watching this movie. Yeah,
- 19:17Speaker 1: these are people, especially Sadie and Ash, They're genuinely happy
- 19:21Speaker 1: for each other. They're genuinely willing to help each other out.
- 19:24Speaker 1: They're on each other's side. Ash's mom, there's no like,
- 19:28Speaker 1: oh she works in the greenhouse, like, she's lovely to
- 19:31Speaker 1: Sadie and welcomes her in and supports her career. I yeah, yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 1: She the mom had a line at the race. I
- 19:41Speaker 1: don't remember what exactly they were referring to, but she
- 19:45Speaker 1: said to Sophie. She goes, I'm so glad you're happy.
- 19:49Speaker 1: And I just was like, that's such a nice sentiment
- 19:52Speaker 1: to share with somebody, like I'm glad you're happy, you know.
- 19:56Speaker 1: I just thought it was real good, real good. I
- 20:00Speaker 1: have two tiny little likes. I speaking of the spire storyline,
- 20:03Speaker 1: I was glad they showed the realistic struggles of trying
- 20:05Speaker 1: to get the repair completed on such a tight timeline,
- 20:08Speaker 1: and that getting those materials would be a challenge, and
- 20:12Speaker 1: of course luckily Ash has a connection. But I think
- 20:15Speaker 1: that worked for me, you know, when his dad was like,
- 20:18Speaker 1: you know, you're just out here doing this podunk work,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and he was like, I'm making connections, Like I am
- 20:23Speaker 1: working for real people, and here's how it benefits me.
- 20:26Speaker 1: The resolution with Frank and Ash and the retired racehorse rehabilitation.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Ash kind of throws his dad for a loop by
- 20:33Speaker 1: announcing that publicly before he's really even discussed it with
- 20:37Speaker 1: his dad, but loved it. But Frank goes with it,
- 20:40Speaker 1: and I think that's a nice way for the two
- 20:42Speaker 1: of these guys to come together. I agree, Well, let's
- 20:45Speaker 1: take a quick break and come back and talk about
- 20:47Speaker 1: our wishes. I'm very curious to hear what your wishes are, Wendy,
- 20:59Speaker 1: because Milissa's very very short. Mine is really short too,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and it's a little bit random. The first one is,
- 21:06Speaker 1: you know, I've talked so much about like, oh, I
- 21:08Speaker 1: love all the behind the scenes of how the Derby
- 21:12Speaker 1: grounds come together, et cetera, et cetera. Right, I thought, oh,
- 21:16Speaker 1: they could have acknowledged like the people making that happen
- 21:20Speaker 1: a little bit. But because I'm I'm picturing like a
- 21:24Speaker 1: silent labor force who was like there, who is not
- 21:27Speaker 1: getting the recognition, But I did google it and I
- 21:32Speaker 1: had found out that they only have a team of
- 21:36Speaker 1: nine people truly at Churchill Downs who who do the landscaping,
- 21:40Speaker 1: like the grounds keepering, Yes, wow, isn't that crazy? And
- 21:45Speaker 1: us we're full full time. Seriously. I just I thought
- 21:48Speaker 1: it was really cool. That's was a wish as I
- 21:51Speaker 1: was watching the movie, as I was putting my notes together.
- 21:54Speaker 1: But don't you expect that team to be working at night? Yes?
- 21:57Speaker 1: Like Disneyland? Yeah, can you have? Seriously, one of my
- 22:01Speaker 1: favorite things to go to Disneyland is look at all
- 22:02Speaker 1: the landscaping. It's like one of my favorite things. I
- 22:05Speaker 1: think there's a tour that you can take there too
- 22:07Speaker 1: to see all that stuff, but I haven't done that.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I really want to do that. Aside from that, my
- 22:12Speaker 1: biggest wish is probably that Delilah could have been dialed
- 22:16Speaker 1: back a little bit. Sophie's Flora's boss. Oh uh huh.
- 22:21Speaker 1: She just her abrasiveness felt out of step for me
- 22:26Speaker 1: considering the whole tone of the movie. I mean, she
- 22:29Speaker 1: gets there in terms of like jumping in and being helpful,
- 22:33Speaker 1: but she's so abrasive with Sophie, Like I was like,
- 22:37Speaker 1: what's your motivation here, like why are you such a
- 22:39Speaker 1: hard ass? She is a hard ass. But even in
- 22:42Speaker 1: those early scenes, you know, when she's like, what are
- 22:45Speaker 1: you doing? She comes in and Sadie is putting together
- 22:49Speaker 1: arrangements with scraps and she kind of was like, I
- 22:52Speaker 1: don't want to be on social media. But then like
- 22:54Speaker 1: she offers her like the tiniest little like this emorsel
- 22:59Speaker 1: of support. Sure, I found her abrasive too, like I
- 23:02Speaker 1: would have a very hard time working for someone like that,
- 23:04Speaker 1: Like I need words of affirmation. I yeah, ordered a
- 23:08Speaker 1: needle point canvas that says are you mad at me?
- 23:10Speaker 1: And so that is where I live. So she would
- 23:15Speaker 1: be a very hard person for me to work for.
- 23:17Speaker 1: On the other hand, you know she's this, as you
- 23:20Speaker 1: said when we were texting, You're like, she's a boss bitch,
- 23:23Speaker 1: like she's built this business and she's well known. So
- 23:27Speaker 1: oh no, I don't think I said she is a
- 23:28Speaker 1: boss bitch. I think she just is a bitch. I
- 23:30Speaker 1: think that's what my tech said. Oh I read it
- 23:33Speaker 1: totally differently. Yeah, no, I don't. I don't love her.
- 23:36Speaker 1: I don't. I don't love her at all. But you're right,
- 23:39Speaker 1: she does throw a morsel towards Sophie. Oh, you said
- 23:42Speaker 1: this florist boss is such a bitch. I read it
- 23:45Speaker 1: so differently that when I went to rewatch it, I
- 23:48Speaker 1: was watching it with like that lens. That's so funny. Oh,
- 23:52Speaker 1: that's really funny. No, because like when Sophie comes out,
- 23:54Speaker 1: she's like, oh, I landed this last minute job to
- 23:58Speaker 1: do this fundraiser, and she's like, what are you thinking?
- 24:02Speaker 1: You can't use any of my stuff? Na. She just
- 24:05Speaker 1: was so mean. She was very mean. But I was like, well,
- 24:13Speaker 1: did Delilah think she had landed it as Delilah or
- 24:16Speaker 1: as Sadie on her own? I don't know. It was
- 24:20Speaker 1: a little bit unclear. Yeah, yeah, I didn't like I
- 24:24Speaker 1: didn't like that. I just didn't like it. I just
- 24:26Speaker 1: felt like she was outside of the box where the
- 24:30Speaker 1: whole movie was. I agree, it's incongruous a little bit, yes, exactly.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Let's talk about the viral video fix. I can see
- 24:39Speaker 1: how it could go viral, but I hate it where
- 24:41Speaker 1: she was like, let's record it and let's sit back
- 24:43Speaker 1: and see the magic. If you don't have a social
- 24:47Speaker 1: media following, who's seeing the video from people who are
- 24:52Speaker 1: in the trenches. I kind of was like, Okay, if
- 24:55Speaker 1: you had a social media following of all these people
- 24:58Speaker 1: in the industry and conte locals, sure mm hmm, but
- 25:04Speaker 1: nobody's gonna see that. Nobody even follows you, I know.
- 25:08Speaker 1: So yeah, unless she like tagged a bunch of people
- 25:11Speaker 1: who knows like these are like it is real niche though,
- 25:14Speaker 1: you know, like the Kentucky Derby Rose catastrophe. So that's
- 25:19Speaker 1: the one way you could feel like, well, people who
- 25:22Speaker 1: are able to help might activate. But yeah, and my
- 25:26Speaker 1: last wish is I clocked the winning horse storyline from
- 25:31Speaker 1: a mile away, Like you knew that this horse was
- 25:32Speaker 1: gonna win, right, I mean, of course I wasn't exactly surprised,
- 25:36Speaker 1: but I did cry. Yeah that was sweet. I liked
- 25:43Speaker 1: her little bestie. Yeah, what were you? What did you
- 25:46Speaker 1: wish for? Really only one other thing than what we've
- 25:48Speaker 1: talked about. And Sadie's mom in the beginning is kind
- 25:51Speaker 1: of annoying. Oh yeah, I was like, just leave her alone.
- 25:54Speaker 1: She's hustling, like, she's here working in the greenhouse, and
- 25:58Speaker 1: she's willing to work her way up from the bottom
- 26:00Speaker 1: to have the career that she wants. Why are we
- 26:05Speaker 1: pushing against this. Yeah, and I want grandchildren. The woman's
- 26:08Speaker 1: she's single, she just got divorced. Leave her alone. The
- 26:12Speaker 1: day that you hear me giving my kids a hard
- 26:15Speaker 1: time about grandchildren, please just smack me in the face. Okay,
- 26:18Speaker 1: you have my permission. Okay, let's talk. Did you see that?
- 26:21Speaker 1: All right? I want to talk about the kiss? Oh
- 26:25Speaker 1: we recently? Was it? I'll be seeing you that you
- 26:29Speaker 1: said like I had butterflies when yeah, and dah Tyler
- 26:33Speaker 1: said something, Yeah, I had this same freaking butterflies in
- 26:38Speaker 1: the pause before the kiss. Oh my good, Oh my god.
- 26:43Speaker 1: And I'm not talking about the final race kiss either,
- 26:46Speaker 1: the necklace kiss. Yes, wow, like just so good. It
- 26:52Speaker 1: was great, so good, so good. My other did you
- 26:57Speaker 1: see that? I like that homework said, don't forget who
- 27:00Speaker 1: we are. The jockey's wearing purple and he's got a
- 27:04Speaker 1: gold crown on his jockey good job. Didn't even notice. Yeah, Yeah,
- 27:09Speaker 1: I see you, I see you, Hallmark. I see what
- 27:11Speaker 1: you did there, especially when they were doing like when
- 27:13Speaker 1: they were pulling the numbers for like their race position,
- 27:16Speaker 1: and they hung up the little thing which was very cute,
- 27:18Speaker 1: and I had like a gold crown on his thing,
- 27:20Speaker 1: and I was like, Okay, I see, well, we mentioned it.
- 27:23Speaker 1: But when Greg Henry comes on screen, I was like,
- 27:25Speaker 1: Mitchem Huntsburger, what are you doing here? And I thought
- 27:29Speaker 1: that was a plus casting for this role. Same the
- 27:32Speaker 1: man has a bazillion acting credit, so he's been a lot,
- 27:35Speaker 1: but to me, he will always be Mitchell Huntsburger. When
- 27:39Speaker 1: Sadie goes to the flower Mart and she's trying to
- 27:41Speaker 1: source red roses for ashes mom's party, this is my
- 27:45Speaker 1: favorite thing to notice when they're not paying actors for
- 27:48Speaker 1: their speaking roles, because none of the people that she
- 27:51Speaker 1: speaks to speak back. They all just like do a
- 27:54Speaker 1: closed lip headshake, every single one of them. I was like, oh,
- 27:57Speaker 1: they did not want to pay them for a speaking
- 28:00Speaker 1: and finally we talked about this in our first impression.
- 28:02Speaker 1: But Hallmark did launch a jewelry line as a companion
- 28:07Speaker 1: to this movie, and I'm fairly certain that's the necklace
- 28:09Speaker 1: they're using in the movie. Is the Hallmark horseshoe? Yeah?
- 28:13Speaker 1: I think so too. Part of me is like I
- 28:16Speaker 1: kind of want to buy it because I love this
- 28:19Speaker 1: movie so much, But on the other side, I'm like,
- 28:22Speaker 1: I don't have any personal connection to like horse racing
- 28:25Speaker 1: or Churchill Downs or anything like that gold horseshoot necklace.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I know wear it from Luck. I like their other set.
- 28:32Speaker 1: They have these really cute study earrings that are super cute. Yeah,
- 28:36Speaker 1: the line is we talked, we kind of gushed about
- 28:38Speaker 1: it in our first impression. I thought it was very cute.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I thought it was well done. We'll leave a link
- 28:44Speaker 1: to those in the show notes if you want to
- 28:45Speaker 1: check them out. And we mentioned at the top of
- 28:47Speaker 1: the episode that Andrew Walker has a march line that
- 28:51Speaker 1: he's done in connection with this movie through Dressing Festive.
- 28:54Speaker 1: We did get shirts sent to us and we're going
- 28:57Speaker 1: to link those. They're very cute. So I was showing
- 29:00Speaker 1: my husband the other day because I was wearing it,
- 29:03Speaker 1: and I was like, do you do you recognize what
- 29:06Speaker 1: my shirt is. He's like, oh, yeah, Churchill Downs. But
- 29:09Speaker 1: then didn't ask like, why are you wearing Yeah, I
- 29:13Speaker 1: was like, Andrew Walker dressing Festive synthis tools. Aren't they
- 29:17Speaker 1: so cute? Because they are cute. They're great shirt, they're cute,
- 29:21Speaker 1: and there's hats in the line too. There's one that
- 29:23Speaker 1: I really want. Yeah, well, maybe we are now the
- 29:28Speaker 1: president and vice president of the Andrew Walker Fan Club.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Maybe the Walkies move over. Everybody who was a fan
- 29:35Speaker 1: here before? Well, what did you rate Kentucky Roses five stars?
- 29:41Speaker 1: It's my favorite movie of the year so far. Wow,
- 29:44Speaker 1: that's high praise. I gave it five stars too. I
- 29:46Speaker 1: thought it was great, great, great. You know what's funny
- 29:50Speaker 1: I was thinking about. I'm like, what movies have I
- 29:52Speaker 1: given five stars this year too? It's this movie. It's
- 29:55Speaker 1: last week's Tyler Hines movie. And let me say, if
- 29:58Speaker 1: I gave it five stars, I didn't give it five stars.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I give it four point seven five which one Missing
- 30:04Speaker 1: the Boat, which was the Christmas Aha movie. And it's
- 30:07Speaker 1: funny that, like my top three movies of the year,
- 30:10Speaker 1: Tyler Turris and Andrew feature these big stars. Yeah, of course. Yeah. Hey,
- 30:15Speaker 1: thanks for listening to this episode of Girls Gone Hallmark.
- 30:17Speaker 1: We'll be back next time with more Hallmark reviews. Goodbye bye.
- 30:35Speaker 1: All right friends, Before we go, just a quick heads up,
- 30:38Speaker 1: you're about to hear some ads. These little gems help
- 30:40Speaker 1: us keep the show running and the Hallmark love flowing.
- 30:43Speaker 1: So do with that info what you will grab as
- 30:46Speaker 1: neck hit the skip button or maybe, just maybe listen
- 30:50Speaker 1: in and discover your new favorite product. Bye.
