- 0:35Welcome back the place where we think differently daily it's
- 0:38going on. Different thinkers, Man.

- 0:51Woo. So I am talking about autism and
- 0:54driving today because there's a lot of taboo about it.
- 0:56A lot of people think that people on the Autism special
- 0:58can't drive. They're unable to drive.
- 1:00There'll be bad drivers. How can they drive?
- 1:02And they have autism. And look, autism is a spectrum
- 1:05disorder. So there may be people on the
- 1:07autism spectrum who will never be able to drive because of some
- 1:10other learning difficulty that autism presents to them.
- 1:13But there are also lots of other people on the autism spectrum
- 1:16because it's a spectrum who will have lots of opportunities to
- 1:19drive and know, you know, errors in, in the way that they could
- 1:23actually formulate a learning plan to learn how to drive.
- 1:27Now this is absolutely fine. I know lots of autistic adults
- 1:31who drive and I know lot of autism.
- 1:33We don't drive, but I myself drive a car and I learned in a
- 1:38manual gear car. But I wanted to really talk
- 1:41about like overcoming the issue and understanding how do we come
- 1:44to solve the problem of like driving?
- 1:46Because driving is a difficult task and there's lots of people
- 1:50on the autism spectrum who want to learn to drive but then
- 1:54hesitant and and hesitate about it because they they think I'm
- 1:58not going to be able to drive because this and the other and
- 2:00blah, blah, blah. But I wanted to kind of put it
- 2:03out there saying that, you know, you will be absolutely fine
- 2:05driving. You just have to learn what I'm
- 2:07going to teach you in this video, which is pretty
- 2:09interesting. So when I was learning to drive,
- 2:13I felt like quite overwhelming. You know, you put it this way,
- 2:16you're you're not as a person. You have to kind of be around
- 2:20another person in a small proximity.
- 2:21You don't really know that well the driving instructor.
- 2:23Then you are in an environment that you can't really control.
- 2:26It's a car. It may smell like that air
- 2:27freshener, which you may or may not like.
- 2:29The environment may be too hot or too cold.
- 2:32You can't control that. The seat may not be as
- 2:34comfortable as you want it to be.
- 2:35All these sensory processing issues and you have social
- 2:38anxiety issues. And then on top of that you have
- 2:40to then drive a car. You're driving a vehicle and the
- 2:43anxiety of driving a vehicle for the first time is crazy.
- 2:45And you got all this stuff going on.
- 2:48On top of that, you've got to figure out how to drive the
- 2:50vehicle. And this is what's difficult.
- 2:53The learning to drive is quite simple when everything else is
- 2:56relaxed. But when you're in the autism
- 2:57spectrum, everything else is heightened to the level of like
- 3:00complete, like, ah, you know, I need, I need space.
- 3:03And it's very difficult to do it.
- 3:05But coming two terms with trying to listen to the instructor
- 3:08teach you how to drive a car. And they basically teach you
- 3:11from a perspective of just learn to drive the car right.
- 3:14But I figured out, you know, a few months into my driving
- 3:17lessons, that one of the things that helped me a lot, and this
- 3:19was kind of like the aha moment, This is like the secret to kind
- 3:22of really getting it was that the main thing was that I I
- 3:27needed to know how the car worked, right?
- 3:29I knew I knew what I was trying to do, like move the gears and
- 3:32my pedals and stuff. But then I was thinking to
- 3:34myself, why am I, what am I doing with these pedals?
- 3:36What's going on in the car? What?
- 3:37How does it work? And autistic people are logical
- 3:39thinkers, so they want to know how things work.
- 3:42They like to know the insurance and outs of stuff.
- 3:44So I decided to research how car gearbox worked and how the
- 3:49pedals worked and what was going on mechanically.
- 3:51And when I looked at that, it kind of made sense because I
- 3:53realized what I was doing inside the cockpit.
- 3:55This is like what going on in the engine and then it kind of
- 3:58all slot into place and made sense.
- 4:00So I was like the main thing that came out of this for me was
- 4:02realizing that I to to logically look at something, it's not just
- 4:06learning how to drive, it's learning how a car drives.
- 4:11You know, it's there's two things, it's learning how a car
- 4:13drives on learning to drive a car.
- 4:14But learning to drive a car is a lot easier when you know how the
- 4:17car is actually moving. Now that was like a proper aha
- 4:20moment for me. So if you're watching this
- 4:22right, and you're, you're artistic and you want to drive,
- 4:24learn how a car works, right? So if you're an autistic person,
- 4:28learn to drive a car or you're a parent of somebody who wants to
- 4:31learn how to drive, then present this to them in a way where you
- 4:35can say, well, why don't we just look at how a car drives?
- 4:38Why don't we look at the engine types?
- 4:40Why do we look at the gears, how the gears work, How does the cow
- 4:43move? Look at the INS and outs,
- 4:45because it's a well-rounded picture.
- 4:46If you're moving a piece of machinery, if you're operating a
- 4:49big piece of machinery, you're going to, going to, you're going
- 4:51to want to know how this is moving, How are you?
- 4:54What are you doing that's making it move?
- 4:55And that is the key to succeeding with autism and
- 4:59driving. And I know that you can do it.
- 5:01You know, another thing is that confidence.
- 5:03But you know you'll have so much more confidence when you know
- 5:05how to drive the car because you know how it's driving.
- 5:09All right, guys, if you have anything to add to this video,
