- 1:08The vast majority of Saint episodes that are in circulation come from Vincent Prices nineteen
- 1:19fifty to fifty one running the role over NBC. However, this was actually
- 1:26his That was his third season as the Saint. His first was actually in
- 1:30Los Angeles over can X radio station, the local CBS affiliate that we have
- 1:40heard mentioned in some recent episodes. I'm not going to talk about lost episodes,
- 1:48titles or titles after this that were lost because we'd be here all a
- 1:55month reading them There were fifty one episodes in this run, which began on
- 2:00July ninth of nineteen forty seven and concluded on June the thirtieth of nineteen forty
- 2:08eight. This particular program is from October fifteenth of nineteen forty seven, and
- 2:15it's important to note that Price's brand as a horror actor hadn't been fully established,
- 2:23and at this point he was just a very much an up and coming
- 2:27Hollywood star who played a variety of different roles. I won't mention the title
- 2:32of today's episode just because it actually gives away the plot. So here now
- 2:38from October fifteenth, nineteen forty seven, is the Saint ticking easy never read,
- 3:01it's easy to look with him. Then you're using your hair to get
- 3:09ahead. When you broom your hair with trim hair conic or trim groooms hair
- 3:15in a handsome, natural way, sets your part of a man who's going
- 3:17places, and Tim does more than merely groom your hair. If the first
- 3:23and only hairs it made with pure virgin olive oil, Nature's fine of hair
- 3:27and scalp conditions, so trim conditions yourself as it grooms your hair tied.
- 3:32It's amazing new peptidic product. Yes, tie trim hairtning the thing they've gone
- 3:58down just created by left the shot her and those revillions from Book Magazine's emotion
- 4:01picture The robin Hood of BT and fime y'all comes to radio. Pay was
- 4:06greater than telling it got there, distant pipe says the thanks come in.
- 4:15Oh it's you again, asked me, ain't that's gonna be back? Answer?
- 4:20And I told you what the answer would be. The guy I like
- 4:24this town. I'm going to stick around a few more days and finished up
- 4:27my business here, like I said, saying it ain't your business. And
- 4:30the forces up the place to five grand for you to skip five grand,
- 4:34ain't test to leave Donald forget you ever been here? That's not my price.
- 4:38And the guy, I don't know what do you won't make an offer.
- 4:41I want the man who killed John Daniels Daniels treasure department guy. Yeah,
- 4:46what are you guys to do with him? He is a friend of
- 4:47mine. I want the boy to cut him down. The guy and he's
- 4:51one boy you ain't gonna get saved. Oh oh, the big shot that
- 4:56he didn't tell big shot did it? Is shot? And then I'll settle
- 4:59for him settled in your grave. First, you're gonna have to make an
- 5:02awful lot of first down step across that goal line. Mischief templing, Oh,
- 5:06I've got some take place. I expect to use reception against power sometimes
- 5:13works. The guy, they always says, Julius smart, I guess I
- 5:16heard wrong. Even guns toping, Uh, well just wait. You see
- 5:20what you gotta go through before you even get within hot calling distance is a
- 5:24big shot? What do you see? And to top it up, they
- 5:28ain't put two guys in this county, but know who he is? Who
- 5:30is the two my guy? Say, Martinians show the best undertakers. And
- 5:35who are the two guys who know who the big shot is? And the
- 5:39guy I'll come localos to say this gun's pitch poison flood poison man. That
- 5:43done looks good on you, the guy. They sort of rounds out the
- 5:46picture of what the well dressed bumb is wearing. This Jesus, say what
- 5:48you are saying. I'll show you what the well dressed snooper wears in its
- 5:50time, a preparated best keep back, thank you. I'll ask the lethal
- 6:00hardware that my collection the guard and if you don't got the sort of conversation
- 6:03piece. I want to hear you go into my collection too. I don't
- 6:08know, I know, but I'm not interested in your lack of formal education.
- 6:11It's the name of two people I'm concerned with. I don't know my
- 6:15arm look on my name. It was his name. She knows only thame
- 6:20me ever went for same name. Quite Rose ghosts to me. I'll figure
- 6:29if you don't the other name el Boston Alp. Yeah, I let go
- 6:34very well, My god, Rose hearing an elbow, I want to see
- 6:39it. So I ain't scoring. I guess this team, but I heard
- 6:42you the guard now that my old grandmother used to stay out for. Am
- 6:45out scared. I'm coming, Do I know you? Not yet? Rose?
- 7:06Come now? Rose? Is if the light to shut the door on
- 7:10a man. So I'll give you my word. I'm not a brush tails
- 7:12and why I haven't got a brush to one? Then I'll give you one
- 7:15strand mister I don't like super much, all right, So you're in.
- 7:20So what do we do now, Dan? Yeah, sure thing. You
- 7:26couldn't buy a song from, mate, not even a little song. A
- 7:29man's name the man behind the man behind the gun throws mister important. That's
- 7:34no small music, mister, that's the whole opera. Are you afraid of
- 7:39being? Two rounds and town? The best way to stay healthy is to
- 7:42say I'm scared of everyone. I'm even scared of you. Maybe I should
- 7:46have taken off the parking head when Halloween was over, like the rest of
- 7:49the children. You've got a bug. It's going to get you killed.
- 7:54And as you stop at the mess and the wrong kind of questions, what's
- 7:58your target anyway? By car the electric chair and I intend to dump my
- 8:03ammunition squarely in it. A man named John Daniels was killed by a man
- 8:07I'm going to meet very soon. You're dead. You're all dead. Always
- 8:13needed to make it legal for the buzzers and for you to lie down.
- 8:16Oh you're dead. As as long as I don't know, it won't hurt
- 8:20you can get better. Go. If anyone knew I was within ten yards
- 8:24of a guy has read how I do? Miss? They burned me down
- 8:26to please go? Where can I find the big shot? I never heard
- 8:31telephony? Big shot? You're bucking up the wrong tu don't. You're a
- 8:35morbid little girl? Like I said, in this town, death is always
- 8:41looking in on me. Anyone you meet can be the butcher. Even you
- 8:45don't go. I'm scared what if someone called it and they were what you
- 8:52weren't You just got into the fire STAPs. Don't get down what Rose?
- 9:03Well? Yeah, yes, I was tailed too bad. You were the
- 9:11one who had to be tagged. Well, mister Templar, I'm glad you
- 9:30decided to visit the office of the District Attorney voluntarily. It does say you're
- 9:33the embarrassment of mind picking you up, yes, mister Richard, but it
- 9:37also saves you the embarrassment of trying to pick me up. Why this sudden
- 9:41desire to entertain me, mister Richid, I'm not entertaining. I'm holding you
- 9:46for murder. I repeat why you were in the same room when Rose Taylor
- 9:50was killed out Well, the least I can do to uphold my oath of
- 9:54office, mister Templar, is to judge you as shall we say, material,
- 10:00Nice material, mister Richards. But it makes it badly sitting suit.
- 10:03Why was she killed because she was one of the two people who knew the
- 10:07name of your local head Crumbbell. She told you. I wasn't given enough
- 10:13time to convince you that she should before someone decided it was the fourth of
- 10:16July. But there are other ways to search him out and make sure he
- 10:20keeps his date, his dates, mister yeah, with the chair that men
- 10:26sit in only once I thinking John Daniels was a friend of mine from childhood.
- 10:31I was a pallbearer at his funeral, mister Richards, and so the
- 10:35bullet in his back made his coffin off the heavy. It got heavier in
- 10:39retrospect when I heard that district attorney had called the case close. Had I
- 10:45gone up every alley and they were all dead in there too many live cases
- 10:48that even my step I know. So I'm playing it my way. I've
- 10:52gone up the same blind alleys in the past few days. Now I'm in
- 10:54an alley with a freeway at the end of it. You mean you know
- 10:58who killed then? Yes, the number one, the big shot himself.
- 11:03Now all I have to do is learn his name. It is little and
- 11:07of course taking. I have to lock you up for your own safety,
- 11:11and you should, but you won't. In fact, you can now because
- 11:15I took the liberty to do a little past agency. What I told the
- 11:20newspapers that I'd be here both today to have a talk and tomorrow morning at
- 11:22ten o'clock to deliver a murderer. The people in this town might not approve
- 11:28of your not giving me the chance. All right, until ten tomorrow,
- 11:35I'll expect you, mister Templar, With or without jud I'll be here.
- 11:39I know you'll be here. The only question is will you be here dead?
- 11:46All the lot? Tampa time. Oh, you stitled me for a
- 12:05mommed I thought you were someone else, someone who couldn't possibly walk up to
- 12:11me on the street. Who her sister the late Rose Taylor's system is the
- 12:18temper? Does one call? You think? It doesn't matter? Why did
- 12:22you kill us? There's only one possible answer to that. I didn't.
- 12:24I don't believe you. No, don't reach that pocket point. Not that
- 12:30you're completely bored with life, bored. On the contrary, so far,
- 12:33my life with you has been one continual round of excitement. Next, I
- 12:37suppose you'll suggest we fly away to the couthing like that. Only I had
- 12:41the bar up the street did in mind as the laces to fly away to.
- 12:45I don't drink the people, I don't struck, So let's fly my
- 12:48way. Come and in case you're thinking of lingering. Remember I've got a
- 12:52hand on not possible, and the thing that it isn't convinced you didn't kill
- 12:56Rose. I bet it's the twenty five with the mother of Colonel Hammer.
- 13:00When it's a small gun, but when a bullets hit they feel big.
- 13:05Come where are we going? You? And you were delgate to all me
- 13:09and a mare girl with a mare twenty five. I wasn't delegated right back
- 13:13to the chelsey. I'd beg for the job because I was hoping you try
- 13:18not to come those was my own Come on, come on, one more
- 13:24question before I decide whether or not to be shot or Hi, jack whom
- 13:26are we calling us? Elbow? I'm a second he wants to see you
- 13:33rest your trigger finger. Lady, That's exactly what I feel like doing too.
- 13:52Hello, well, well, well, my old buddy is strain.
- 13:56I had Jackie bring you over because I want the warn you off that time.
- 14:01You want me to lay off and you want observing time, And I
- 14:03just smartened up. I don't fight off more than I can swallow no longer.
- 14:09I wants making the earlier rich. Who's the big bol How much you
- 14:13mean you're hell for money? Can you think of a better thing to get
- 14:16paid off in. I told you smartened up. I don't squeeze triggers for
- 14:20a living no more. Or what type of wrong doing to you specialize in?
- 14:24Now? And in terms of the big bosses books, you mean there's
- 14:28pats and cat black money and that, but that depends on how the books
- 14:33are kept. Say, I'll get a system. And the only guy knows
- 14:37who the big boy is, and I'm the only guy knows what it's says.
- 14:41It trusts me like a stimy twin that you repay hiss by Robbie.
- 14:46It's all in the record. Like I've been telling you, I smartened up.
- 14:50Nobody knows the things, but you'll tell Daniels. Look here in town
- 14:52on my private invitation. You mean you sent for the Treasury department. Sure,
- 14:58it's like this. The big boy pull was in seven figures a year
- 15:01on his businesses, and naturally he don't pay no taxes. And it's the
- 15:05whisker does a fortune to our uncle and back text stuff. Only our uncle
- 15:09don't know he's got it coming, so I thought he should. Out of
- 15:13patriotism, of course, yeah, out of patriotism. They always treated me
- 15:18so nice and leven was out of patriotism and then to understand, Yeah,
- 15:24that's what Uncle Sammy's got me in FORO for helping to catch a tax target.
- 15:30That was the boy got wise to what Daniels was up to and gave
- 15:33him one to the lungs. How fortunate he didn't get why you have?
- 15:37Yeah, but I've smartened up to I've smartened up. I think this came
- 15:43out feels black. Oh yeah, I don't expected that, Jack, How
- 15:46better get into these books? By the way, I'm going off now there
- 15:54is that a book to juggle all? Yeah, from one of the joints.
- 15:56I better opened the stuff and to this one. Hell stop it give
- 16:02out help. I told you things. Yeah, you're smartened up here,
- 16:19I'm afraid someone else is just a little smarter. You're listening through the same

- 18:21and back of the evening gown, particularly the ladder. And they shouldn't carry
- 18:26bombs around either, as long as you're wearing that particular evening gown. I'm
- 18:32fine to believe you. If you did serve up the bomb, didn't you?
- 18:37Books? You know the bomb smy ow yes? If the Boston is
- 18:45deaded in the city he named himself after the other answer that one. And
- 18:52even if you wouldn't tell me, all right, you are, I'm too
- 18:56younger guy like Rose, I'm not gonna I don't know. It's amazing how
- 19:02few people in this town are knit to knowing anything. Let's the graph in
- 19:07the public school system, no fear, the nervous system. The only thing
- 19:15people in this town aren't afraid of is getting arrest. They've been cities like
- 19:19this for jackies, and in nine cases out of ten, when the local
- 19:23must believe me was eliminated. The lessons that caship, the big hunky,
- 19:30that knocking the self problems I want to just swallow through. But I was
- 19:37beginning to enjoy our conda. Also the sell number five. I noticed you
- 19:44were enjoying pleasant memory. Where are you going when a kind of safety don't
- 19:48I'm leaving Tom don't be surprised if you get a postcard of the picture of
- 19:52the Arts of Triumph. Bye jackies, and good luck the other one that
- 19:57needs the luck. Okay, getting close is a good kid. I'll get
- 20:03him with a good kid. And thanks for the night. Yes, I
- 20:12don't know what you're talking where, missus Temper? How convenient of the newspaper
- 20:32to keep its reference files open at night? Are you a professional busy body
- 20:34or have you an extra grime Tooana the busybody, mister Temper, Nor do
- 20:38I have an extra grind? Nearly a gun to shoot? Mister Temper.
- 20:41You know some days somewhere a man will come up from me and a dark
- 20:45set nearly ask me for a life, and I doubt it. I'm afraid
- 20:48you're saintly stay in this world of pears and chaos is going to exclose,
- 20:52mister dol This time you've hooked up the wrong fire. You'll see nervous.
- 20:56Who are you? Does it matter? We'll be appointed such a time or
- 21:00I just like to know who it is that I am to come back and
- 21:03walk very well. I am known to the expatingly f who know me as
- 21:07the professor. I've had guns put on me by top Frank Kirk and corners.
- 21:12But I believe you're the very first. I don't think the disillusion you,
- 21:17mister Templar, but I was merely an assistant professor. If you don't
- 21:21mind the cars over there after you, please, no jokes, I assure
- 21:26you this is the most serious matter. Come here we are you will get
- 21:33him pleased. Oh add to you? Oh no, I forgot. You're
- 21:36not in much of a mood for joking, are you? No, not
- 21:38unless the joke is mine? Like, Oh, I'm just a little hard
- 21:45to pois. You could he save yourself some pullets and I tell you to
- 21:48drive the car, Stephen, not to offer suggestion. Okay, boys,
- 21:51where to the country First? We'll go to the place, Stephen. There
- 21:52are some questions. I want mister Templer to answer, questions that may require
- 21:57us sound to crue. Oh wake up, mister Temper. Oh so there
- 22:15really is someone like you. I didn't think I deserved that bad agree re
- 22:19ready, but unbound, mister Temper. For a moment, I was afraid
- 22:22I might have been a trip for two energetic on your skull, I hate
- 22:25to both, professor, but my skull has increased before by experts. In
- 22:29fact, it has more threads than it's been good riskports than his tired in
- 22:33front of your little jokes, I see unfortunate. They must be wasted on
- 22:37me. See I'm a humorless man. So I've noticed I brought you here
- 22:40to ask you some questions. Mister Templer. I should have warned me,
- 22:42Professor. I'm afraid I didn't come prepared for a quick I have various means
- 22:47of preparing you, mister Templer. So to begin to whom did you describe
- 22:52your suspicions concerning a certain man's identity? Certain man you wouldn't be meaning the
- 22:56big man, which is a head rack. I have reason to believe you
- 22:59know who he is. Whom have you been added in? Not prepared?
- 23:04Yeah? We either question once again? Yes, but something tells me you'll
- 23:08never pay me the sixty four dollars. I can't tell you how impatient I
- 23:12am for your answers as tempt that. See, after you've finished talking,
- 23:17I have other things planned for you. How nice if you take me a
- 23:19mere stranger? In total, I this I must remember the return all your
- 23:23courtesies when you want tie me talk? Right? Is the district? Yes,
- 23:30I read about your books whom you late the Northwest Mounts by bringing in
- 23:33your men of the district Attorney's pity you won't keep the table. What is
- 23:37it, Stephen? I thought you might be wanting to know, Stephen when
- 23:40I want to Stephens the door how many times? But I tell you to
- 23:44keep it toase you're fool? Do you know how I feel about an open
- 23:47door? But once came in course, if practically ain't any this time,
- 23:49but year anyway, you'll tell me of a professor of etomology. Three Stephen?
- 23:55Three? But what before I do something? We'll both be sorry for?
- 23:57Okay, okay, Oh you know it took me a little time to
- 24:02catch onto your particular type of insanity, Professor, but I did all.
- 24:06Now you'll miss a professor of entomology a the study of insects, and you
- 24:11study them so hard, Profess, you're cracked. You're not in the classroom
- 24:15now, your students in your specimen bottles. Professor, you're in the big
- 24:18league, now, in the world series. Professor. You got to know
- 24:21everything there was to know about insects, didn't you? You knew them so
- 24:25well you became afraid of it is something to get afraid of when you turn
- 24:30your imagination loose on the touching, Professor, when you consider how many millions
- 24:36of insects there are very human beings, Why on your sleep stop it?
- 24:41And I think I just almost stop it over there? Stops business, n
- 24:53time me. If you want me to help you, you have to,
- 24:56Professor. There's the first thing to do is to get all these fall in
- 25:18fighting things out of your mind. That all you have to do is looks
- 25:29like I'll be able to keep my date with the district attorney. After all,
- 25:33my old grandmother used to say, that's to you. So you kept
- 25:51your word. Mister Templar, You're here and the lot yes done here des
- 25:55quite the obstacle course of death, Brados, I've run through and daland it
- 26:00will talk me through. I'm sorry to say I don't see your prisoner,
- 26:02mister Templer. As I recall you were to dish up the head crumb.
- 26:07I suppose you couldn't bring him in. Now I couldn't bring him in,
- 26:11you see he already was. Then I beg your pardon, don't beg my
- 26:15pardon. The Governor's you want? And you know I don't think you get
- 26:18Are you crazy? No, just blow with it. It seems being a
- 26:22district attorney is a wonderful cover up a crumb, isn't it. You're insane,
- 26:26am I? You sound insane, mister Templer, rushing in here,
- 26:30threatening to kill me, calling me a crook, and demanding money. Oh
- 26:33oh, of course, I'd be perfectly willing to forget all of these things
- 26:38and the various other offenses. I find it so cozy you'll dream up if
- 26:42you'll just quietly leave town to pretend you whenever here you mean, just forced
- 26:47from my memory some of the happiest moment in my life. Mister. Oh
- 26:51no, you're asking too much, and it looks as though we've reached a
- 26:53stalemate, unless, of course, one of us choosers to get violent.
- 26:57Once I catch a murderer, mister Richards, I leave all further violence to
- 27:02the state execution once you catch him. Templar. Right now, you seem
- 27:04to be in the disturbing position of the hunter who caught a tiger of the
- 27:07tail. Put up your hands us. Oh you mean over my head.
- 27:11You're a butt crazy professor made me keep them at my side, Templar,
- 27:15who gave me away. It was a remark I heard, mister Richards.
- 27:18I was told that the only thing in this town people aren't afraid of.
- 27:26So I checked this disc attorney's record in the newspaper files. You have an
- 27:30abolable batting average rich people. Your people were literally getting away with murder.
- 27:37How clever of you did not just control the gang because you could set them
- 27:41free, and you also control the rack. I know, but you still
- 27:45have to prove your story. Mister templar, Oh, it's already done.
- 27:47I took the trouble that witch on your calm. I'm afraid our conversation wasn't
- 27:52very now, mister Richards, our personal before the police get your high?

- 30:33Well. The first half of the episode was very, very serious,
- 30:40and surprisingly so for The Saint, which under Vincent Price usually took a lighter
- 30:48touch, and I think we saw some of that in the second half of
- 30:53the episode, and I thought that that part was nasty don. The title
- 30:59of the episode was The Gangster District Attorney, which, as I said,
- 31:03gives away the title, so I hope you don't mind me not giving it
- 31:08to you at the beginning. Also, Jeff Chandler has another cameo. We've
- 31:14heard him in quite a few of those. We'll hear him a few months
