- 0:36SPEAKER_11: Mike Keith starts now.
- 0:40SPEAKER_09: Welcome to the show.
- 0:42SPEAKER_09: It's Monday, and that means we have a big orange rewind from Saturday's game with our own Brent Hubbs.
- 0:48SPEAKER_09: We visit with new Tennessee basketball standout Day Day Aims.
- 0:52SPEAKER_09: And of course, our Monday leads off with ball head coach Josh Heifel.
- 0:57SPEAKER_09: It's presented by Calhoun.
- 1:00SPEAKER_09: Josh, the style of your game against Texas on Saturday.
- 1:04SPEAKER_09: Did the flow of the game and the style of the game sort of go the way you expect it to coming in?
- 1:10SPEAKER_24: I wouldn't say uh exactly how we expected it to.
- 1:13SPEAKER_24: No, uh I thought our defense uh played extremely well uh after the first series, uh gave up some some things in the first series that uh we can match out and and uh do a better job on.
- 1:25SPEAKER_24: I thought special teams were solid uh majority of uh the football game offensively.
- 1:30SPEAKER_24: Uh, you know, we drive on the first one, um you know, miss an opportunity to maybe get seven out of that in that drive, um, but then you know, sputtered for a long majority of the football game.
- 1:42SPEAKER_24: Just 11 guys all doing their job at the same time.
- 1:46SPEAKER_24: It was kind of mix and match um, you know, for a majority of the football game.
- 1:50SPEAKER_24: And uh guys came in and you know, we learned from it and we gotta carry those lessons forward.
- 1:55SPEAKER_09: Sticking with defense for just a second, what did the defense do well to get so much pressure on Texas quarterback Arch Manager?
- 2:03SPEAKER_24: Yeah, uh got a you know, a handful of sacks, applied pressure all day long.
- 2:07SPEAKER_24: Uh, we're able to get them into some third and longs.
- 2:09SPEAKER_24: Uh that came from doing a really good job in the run game on first and second down.
- 2:14SPEAKER_24: Um, but I thought, you know, our pressures uh bottled up the quarterback, didn't let him escape a majority of the day.
- 2:20SPEAKER_24: Uh I thought our twist game, uh even in the run game, uh, you know, some of our run stunts uh, you know, performed really well.
- 2:28SPEAKER_24: K and Lee with a spectacular interception.
- 2:32SPEAKER_09: What has he really added to your secondary?
- 2:34SPEAKER_24: Yeah, a guy that has had experience, uh, has great confidence in himself, uh, has really developed uh from January through spring ball, but by the time he came back in training camp, a much more confident player in in what we're doing, uh schematically, greater understanding, and uh a guy that's a playmaker.
- 2:52SPEAKER_09: I want to talk to you about the punt return for a touchdown.
- 2:55SPEAKER_09: What really enabled that to open up and Quay Moss go 57 yards for a score?
- 3:00SPEAKER_24: Yeah, that was uh a challenge to that unit uh here, really the last couple of weeks.
- 3:05SPEAKER_24: Uh Quay's got great confidence back there.
- 3:08SPEAKER_24: Um the more time on task, the number of reps he's gotten continued to grow in that way.
- 3:13SPEAKER_24: Uh we were doing some really good things in the core, but we were losing some of the one-on-ones out on the edge against their gunners.
- 3:19SPEAKER_24: Did a better job uh giving some space for uh Quay to catch that thing and get it started.
- 3:25SPEAKER_24: And then we matched out bodies.
- 3:27SPEAKER_24: We played with good fundamental position and leveraged things the right way, and then you know, Quay's able to take it a distance.
- 3:33SPEAKER_09: I want to ask you about the onside kick.
- 3:35SPEAKER_09: Um, I know the league has sort of clarified a couple of things that go with uh you know, you've got to be at the 35, the the kicker can't move, those sorts of things.
- 3:44SPEAKER_09: A dropkick is legal though, on an onside kick.
- 3:48SPEAKER_09: How did you find out that Jackson Ross could dropkick in that way?
- 3:52SPEAKER_24: Yeah, really talented uh guy uh with both of his feet.
- 3:56SPEAKER_24: Um we were out there uh this is uh a year and change ago, and uh we were going through uh uh our specialized kicks uh during one of our practices, and he started just messing around and and doing it, and um became a real weapon and something that we've uh been rehearsing for a while now.
- 4:14SPEAKER_24: Wow.
- 4:15SPEAKER_24: I mean it's uh it's unusual to see somebody who can do that.
- 4:18SPEAKER_24: It is.
- 4:19SPEAKER_24: Uh he's really talented.
- 4:20SPEAKER_24: Uh obviously can kick right and left, and uh his ability to uh to play some tricks with uh with the ball, pretty special.
- 4:28SPEAKER_09: Forty-eight hours later, your review of how Faison Brandon played in the ball game.
- 4:32SPEAKER_24: Yeah, I I love that you know he continued to battle, competed, um, you know, gets nicked up early in the football game, resilient, comes back, um, did some things at a really high level.
- 4:44SPEAKER_24: There's some throws that he missed, some throws that he didn't let go, um, some things that uh he's gotta learn from and continue to grow in, and uh he had that mindset today when he came in.
- 4:54SPEAKER_09: All right, talk to me a little bit about the week that begins for preparation for the Alburn Tigers.
- 4:59SPEAKER_24: Yeah, uh a football team that's uh playing really well.
- 5:02SPEAKER_24: Uh they're extremely talented, um, you know, physical on the defensive line, uh athletic, second and third levels, uh offensively, a quarterback that's a dynamic playmaker.
- 5:13SPEAKER_24: Uh he's gonna be a plus one in the run game, so we gotta do a great job against him, and uh they're making plays out on the perimeter too.
- 5:20SPEAKER_09: Coming off your first loss of the season, what is your challenge this week to your Tennessee football team?
- 5:25SPEAKER_24: Yeah, the challenge for a football team is to not let one Saturday affect what happens when we come back into the building on Monday.
- 5:31SPEAKER_24: Uh whether you win or lose, you gotta flush it.
- 5:34SPEAKER_24: Uh as a competitor, everyone's gonna talk or everyone around you're gonna talk about, you know, what happened the previous week or flash forward all the way to to the coming Saturday.
- 5:44SPEAKER_24: Uh you gotta be in the present, you gotta prepare the right way, practice the right way to give yourself a chance to go play the way that we need to.
- 5:50SPEAKER_09: How do you uh as far as the team, not allow the conversation to be, say, all about offensive line play or all about you know not running the ball or all about this?
- 6:00SPEAKER_09: How do you make it a team thing to take forward?
- 6:03SPEAKER_24: Well, it in position, in unit, and in the team meeting, uh you gotta be real with guys or they're gonna see through that.
- 6:09SPEAKER_24: And uh we addressed uh the performance holistically, offensively, not up to our standard.
- 6:14SPEAKER_24: Um, opportunities to go change the game, win the game, uh, even at the end of the game.
- 6:19SPEAKER_24: And uh, you know, the five guys up front, yep, they gotta play better in the run game and in protection.
- 6:25SPEAKER_24: Uh but it's all eleven operating together.
- 6:27SPEAKER_24: Uh quarterbacks gotta be a piece of it, the tight ends gotta be a piece of it, your running backs and wide receivers play a part in it too.
- 6:35SPEAKER_09: Finally, the atmosphere at the ball game.
- 6:37SPEAKER_09: Phenomenal.
- 6:38SPEAKER_09: Yeah, the and the crowd being there.
- 6:40SPEAKER_09: I mean, it was amazing to walk back in after our television show, still an hour before kickoff, and the place is almost filled.
- 6:46SPEAKER_24: Yeah, I think uh administration is gonna do half-price drinks, uh, every ball, every ball game.
- 6:51SPEAKER_24: Uh uh, but uh the atmosphere was electric.
- 6:54SPEAKER_24: Uh I knew it would be our our fan base is uh second to none and uh a great home field advantage uh all day on Saturday.
- 7:02SPEAKER_24: We appreciate the time, Coach.
- 7:03SPEAKER_24: I appreciate it.
- 7:04SPEAKER_09: We've got more coming up on the Mike Keith show right after this.

- 9:16SPEAKER_06: Valvoleen instead of oil chain.
- 9:19SPEAKER_06: Expert twenty.
- 9:25SPEAKER_10: Out of here.
- 9:33SPEAKER_10: Out of here.
- 9:40SPEAKER_10: Out of here.
- 9:55SPEAKER_20: Some talent is part of protecting the quarterback.
- 9:58SPEAKER_20: Some talent is all in the water.
- 10:00SPEAKER_20: Some talent is making care of no one to protect it.
- 10:03SPEAKER_20: We protect each other.
- 10:05SPEAKER_20: We prepare to stay ready.
- 10:06SPEAKER_20: Protection looks different depending on where you stay.
- 10:09SPEAKER_20: Whether it's protecting the quarterback or protecting what matters at all, the responsibility is to study.
- 10:15SPEAKER_20: Best five methods.
- 10:16SPEAKER_20: Designed to expire, made to protect, driven, disturbed.

- 10:25SPEAKER_18: It was a normal day going to the game with my son, but this time it felt like a sledgehammer hit my chest.
- 10:32SPEAKER_18: The UT medical team knew exactly what they needed to do and just kept me calm throughout the process.
- 10:38SPEAKER_18: It was probably the most serious heart attack that you could have.
- 10:42SPEAKER_18: The team took care of me, worked quickly, efficiently, and I did catch the end of the game.
- 10:48SPEAKER_16: These are the stories of the region's academic health system.
- 10:53SPEAKER_14: The future doesn't stand still.
- 11:04SPEAKER_14: That's the power of natural gas.

- 12:25SPEAKER_09: The Mike Heat Show delivered by Uber Eats continues.
- 12:28SPEAKER_09: Brent Hudson, ballquest.com and the Ball Radio Network.
- 12:31SPEAKER_09: You've had more than 48 hours to digest Saturday's game against Texas.
- 12:36SPEAKER_09: Your final conclusions about the 20-17 Longhorn win.
- 12:41SPEAKER_15: Defensively, Tennessee was was really outstanding.
- 12:45SPEAKER_15: To win the rushing battle, the turnover battle, the third down battle.
- 12:49SPEAKER_15: A lot of things Tennessee did well.
- 12:51SPEAKER_15: They tackled really well.
- 12:53SPEAKER_15: They limited the big play ability of Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingle for the most part.
- 12:59SPEAKER_15: Three big plays cost him points.
- 13:01SPEAKER_15: But I thought defensively you come away with man, you love where where this defense is going and what they're getting done.
- 13:07SPEAKER_15: Offensively, just a really tough day all the way around.
- 13:11SPEAKER_15: Ineffective running the football.
- 13:13SPEAKER_15: You knew it was going to be a challenge.
- 13:15SPEAKER_15: The game was really fast offended for the offensive guys.
- 13:18SPEAKER_15: It felt like the entire day.
- 13:19SPEAKER_15: It felt like it was fast for the guys in the trenches, felt like it was fast for the quarterback.
- 13:24SPEAKER_15: It just didn't feel like they ever got their footing underneath them.
- 13:29SPEAKER_15: You know, you were always in third and long.
- 13:31SPEAKER_15: Every time you got a little rhythm, it seemed like there was a mistake somewhere along the way that that messed you up and put you behind the sticks.
- 13:38SPEAKER_15: Young quarterback had a young day, got to grow up in a hurry.
- 13:41SPEAKER_15: They've got to help him.
- 13:43SPEAKER_15: And the his teammates around him got to help him.
- 13:45SPEAKER_15: You probably got to help him a little bit with some play calling stuff too, to take a little bit of the pressure on him because there was a lot on him in that game as the game progressed because you just couldn't effectively really do anything else.
- 13:57SPEAKER_09: Special teams, obviously special in the course of that ball game, and that was one of the reasons from a very obvious standpoint, Tennessee was able to stay in it.
- 14:06SPEAKER_15: Well, Josh Heipel told his team at the half in the locker room, we're gonna go make a play on special teams in the second half.
- 14:12SPEAKER_15: Somehow, some way we're gonna make a play.
- 14:13SPEAKER_15: Let's go make a play and get back in this thing on special teams.
- 14:16SPEAKER_15: They they hung a punt up in the middle of the field, probably outkicked his coverage a little bit.
- 14:20SPEAKER_15: Quay Moss, you know, did a terrific job finding, you know, green grass and hitting it.
- 14:25SPEAKER_15: It was well blocked up all the way through.
- 14:27SPEAKER_15: Um the young freshman, Joel Wyatt, had a really good block.
- 14:31SPEAKER_15: No, you know, everything was perfect in the way you do it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_15: Nobody was hands to the face, nobody was pushing in the back, all of those types of things.
- 14:38SPEAKER_15: It was a huge play.
- 14:39SPEAKER_15: It was a really big moment, obviously, to jumpstart that crowd again, to give some juice to the sideline.
- 14:45SPEAKER_15: Um, then you go in the the onside kick.
- 14:48SPEAKER_15: Everybody's still wondering, is it a legal kick?
- 14:50SPEAKER_15: Is it not legal?
- 14:51SPEAKER_15: You know, you got some people saying you shit you can't do that based on the rules.
- 14:55SPEAKER_15: You got other rules experts saying it's absolutely legal.
- 14:58SPEAKER_15: You got every special teams coordinator around the country uh on Monday asking their kicker, can you do one of those?
- 15:04SPEAKER_15: Can we do that?
- 15:05SPEAKER_15: Trying to make sure that we can do that.
- 15:07SPEAKER_15: That's very hard.
- 15:08SPEAKER_09: I mean, do you remember when Doug Flutie dropped in his last NFL game, he dropped kicked an extra point and everyone was so amazed.
- 15:16SPEAKER_09: I mean, as long as the ball comes in touch with the ground, it's a legal kick itself.
- 15:21SPEAKER_09: Now, in terms of everything that goes with it, that's another story.
- 15:25SPEAKER_09: But I mean, that is really hard to do.
- 15:28SPEAKER_09: Um, there are very few people you'll ever meet who can kick who can also dropkick.
- 15:34SPEAKER_15: Yeah, and it was funny.
- 15:34SPEAKER_15: I was talking to Jackson Ross in the locker room afterwards for some interview stuff we were doing, and he was just completely nonchalant about it.
- 15:42SPEAKER_15: Like, I've been doing that since I was, you know, four years or five years old.
- 15:46SPEAKER_15: Like I've always just kind of just goof around with the ball and kick it.
- 15:49SPEAKER_15: Like it was the most nonchalant deal in his like it was totally like not a big deal to him.
- 15:55SPEAKER_15: You know, it's like a golfer hitting it 300 yards or a guy who always gets out of the sand, it never bothers him.
- 16:00SPEAKER_15: Yeah, okay, I just I dropkicked it.
- 16:02SPEAKER_15: Okay.
- 16:02SPEAKER_15: That's no big deal.
- 16:04SPEAKER_15: But both of them were completely effective kicks.
- 16:07SPEAKER_15: Oh, both of them were gonna work.
- 16:08SPEAKER_15: Yes.
- 16:09SPEAKER_15: It was that was the amazing part.
- 16:11SPEAKER_09: Well, the fact that he can spin a drop kick is crazy.
- 16:14SPEAKER_09: I I mean, if because the the long story short, the the ball has to come in contact with the ground.
- 16:22SPEAKER_09: And so that's that the point at which you kick the ball is when it comes in contact with the ground.
- 16:27SPEAKER_09: So coordinating that is hard, but then how you kick it, I I'm baffled.
- 16:33SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I am too.
- 16:34SPEAKER_15: But and and I wanted some explanation.
- 16:36SPEAKER_15: I wanted a little more detail, and he was very much like, yeah, I dropped it, hit the ground, I kicked it.
- 16:41SPEAKER_15: Like, it looked at me like it's not a big deal.
- 16:44SPEAKER_15: And I'm like, really?
- 16:45SPEAKER_15: Because everybody in the country is trying to figure out if their guy can do that.
- 16:48SPEAKER_09: Most can't.
- 16:48SPEAKER_09: Nope.
- 16:49SPEAKER_09: Most most people, 99% of the people who kick can't do that.
- 16:53SPEAKER_09: All right.
- 16:55SPEAKER_09: Furman, first game, expect you to win.
- 16:59SPEAKER_09: You do.
- 17:00SPEAKER_09: You're better than Georgia Tech.
- 17:02SPEAKER_09: You know that.
- 17:03SPEAKER_09: But they're a Power Force school, you respect their program, you're on the road.
- 17:08SPEAKER_09: You know that's a possible minefield for you, but you get through it and you win the ballgame.
- 17:14SPEAKER_09: You basically are just better than them and you get through it.
- 17:17SPEAKER_09: Kennesaw State expected to win.
- 17:20SPEAKER_09: You do.
- 17:21SPEAKER_09: You're playing Texas, they are way hyped in the preseason.
- 17:25SPEAKER_09: They beat Ohio State, they get to number one.
- 17:28SPEAKER_09: They're everything they were supposed to be.
- 17:30SPEAKER_09: You're an underdog.
- 17:32SPEAKER_09: It's not a huge shock that you don't win it, even though you're disappointed.
- 17:37SPEAKER_09: But if you told somebody at the start of the season you're three and one, they probably would have said, hmm, it's probably what I expected.
- 17:44SPEAKER_09: In some ways, Brent Hubbs, does the season start for Tennessee now?
- 17:48SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I think for this team.
- 17:50SPEAKER_15: I think in a lot of ways.
- 17:51SPEAKER_15: I mean, I I think my my belief or my thought with this team is has always been about how much do they grow.
- 18:00SPEAKER_15: And I think now is when you really start to see what that growth looks like.
- 18:04SPEAKER_15: And that's no offense to the first three opponents.
- 18:06SPEAKER_15: Sure.
- 18:06SPEAKER_15: But now you figure out where you're at and how much you have to grow as individuals, as position groups, as both sides of the ball.
- 18:15SPEAKER_15: I think the disappointment for Tennessee fans is just the concern you have offensively coming out of Saturday.
- 18:23SPEAKER_15: It had had that been a shootout, had that been you you lost on a fluky play here, or somebody went and made a play, I think there's a little bit of a different feeling.
- 18:32SPEAKER_15: I think the concern that Tennessee fans have coming out of that is wait a minute, maybe you're not where we as far along as you thought or hoped you would be at the quarterback spot.
- 18:41SPEAKER_15: Your offensive line had issues.
- 18:44SPEAKER_15: Wait a minute.
- 18:45SPEAKER_15: This is not what I thought this team was gonna be offensively.
- 18:48SPEAKER_15: Much more question marks coming out of this game.
- 18:52SPEAKER_15: I'm not stunned by some of it because I think Texas is really good on defense.
- 18:56SPEAKER_15: Really good.
- 18:57SPEAKER_15: You feel good about where Tennessee's at on defense, although they're gonna play better offenses, I think.
- 19:01SPEAKER_15: But the I think the bigger concern Tennessee fans have beyond the loss, and I don't think a lot of ton of people are shocked by the loss, but I think it's more of how the game played out.
- 19:12SPEAKER_15: Ten sacks, your inefficiencies on offense, I think is more of a red flag that people want to see some answers to starting to see.
- 19:19SPEAKER_09: All right, see if you believe this statement.
- 19:20SPEAKER_09: I I think the biggest challenge for the Tennessee staff in the last 48 hours is determining what that happened on Saturday was you and what happened on Saturday was them.
- 19:35SPEAKER_09: Because Texas really is that good.
- 19:39SPEAKER_09: They're good.
- 19:39SPEAKER_09: And and their personnel in certain spots is probably better than yours.
- 19:44SPEAKER_09: So what is you not executing the way you needed to, not making the right decisions, not using the right technique?
- 19:52SPEAKER_09: Potentially the personnel is not, this guy's just not going to be able to get it done the way we need to get it done.
- 19:59SPEAKER_09: And what is it about Texas that you say, listen, they're just that good.
- 20:03SPEAKER_09: We need to stay the course with what we're doing.
- 20:05SPEAKER_09: Well, I think it seems like that's the biggest challenge for any staff coming out of a game in September against a talented team.
- 20:13SPEAKER_15: Well, I think you're I think to your point the question is what's fixable right now and and maybe what's not immediately fixable.
- 20:20SPEAKER_15: And I think when you go back and you watch the game and they watch the game, they look and they see, hey, there's some open receivers, we miss some opportunities, there's some areas that the quarterback's got to go there, there's some other times in the game where you didn't give a quarterback a chance to make a play.
- 20:36SPEAKER_15: Um you gotta run the ball more effectively, you gotta figure out different ways to run the the ball more effectively.
- 20:42SPEAKER_15: And you you gotta you gotta look at the structures as Josh Hyper likes to say, and how Texas played you and what what could your counter to that be?
- 20:50SPEAKER_15: I think the biggest concern about what's fixable and what's not fixable is it wasn't like Texas sold out to Blitz a whole bunch.
- 20:58SPEAKER_15: They played a lot of three and four man front and still affected the quarterback and affected the passing game.
- 21:04SPEAKER_15: You have to be able to take advantage in the run game or something in the passing game to where people can't just play drop coverage, prevent you from having a bunch of deep shots and vertical shots, and still affect the quarterback with three and four man fronts.
- 21:19SPEAKER_15: That to me is what you have to fix.
- 21:21SPEAKER_15: And the question is can we fix that, or is that a personnel issue that we can't we can't block up front the way we need to block up front?
- 21:29SPEAKER_09: Are they going to see another pass rusher like Simmons this year?
- 21:34SPEAKER_09: So you see a guy, I mean, many people regard him as the best edge rusher in college football.
- 21:40SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 21:40SPEAKER_09: I mean he I mean he's that he's potentially a top ten pick in the draft in April.
- 21:45SPEAKER_09: So I guess my my question is he's so good, how much of it and listen, they didn't block him all the time, don't get me wrong.
- 21:53SPEAKER_09: But if you understand you're not gonna see somebody like that again, do you have to change everything?
- 22:00SPEAKER_09: You're doing based on the problems that he gave you.
- 22:04SPEAKER_15: Well, I think you have to, I don't think you have to necessarily change everything, but I think you have to deep dive into what was the quarterback's responsibility, what was the offensive line's responsibility.
- 22:14SPEAKER_15: But in this league, at this level of football, you you you got to avoid giving up 10 sacks a game.
- 22:20SPEAKER_15: You can't get sacked 10 times.
- 22:22SPEAKER_15: And so the question becomes how do you avoid how do you avoid that?
- 22:26SPEAKER_15: And you heard Josh Heipel say after the game, sometimes the quarterback's got to learn to play the next play.
- 22:31SPEAKER_15: Okay, that's throw the ball away at times.
- 22:34SPEAKER_15: You got to block it better up front at times.
- 22:37SPEAKER_15: That's where you have to get better.
- 22:39SPEAKER_15: Is when you watch that, there were too many plays where the play never had a chance because of the pressure that was playing, or the quarterback did not cut it loose in a tight window and throw the football.
- 22:51SPEAKER_15: That's what Josh Heipel and his staff are trying to fix today is avoiding 10 sacks, eight sacks, whatever that number is, and SEC play the rest of the way.
- 22:59SPEAKER_15: Because listen, Auburn doesn't have a Simmons, but they got a couple of guys off the edge going to play on Sunday.
- 23:04SPEAKER_15: Sure.
- 23:05SPEAKER_15: And so they're going to come after you and they're going to test you and they're going to see how well you can block.
- 23:10SPEAKER_15: Is it a fundamental thing that helps Simmons?
- 23:13SPEAKER_15: Was it just he's elite and he's better than everybody in the country?
- 23:16SPEAKER_15: Or were there some things you did poorly in your past sets or your help along the way?
- 23:21SPEAKER_15: That's the question.
- 23:22SPEAKER_09: Or some of both.
- 23:22SPEAKER_09: Correct.
- 23:23SPEAKER_09: Which is probably where the answer lies.
- 23:26SPEAKER_09: Absolutely.
- 23:26SPEAKER_09: As we go to break, uh, we've got the Nealin moment sponsored by Pilot, and it actually could have come from Saturday.
- 23:32SPEAKER_09: There were several special things that happened on Saturday.
- 23:36SPEAKER_09: But Friday.
- 23:37SPEAKER_09: Friday morning outside gate nine, champions corner, and they dedicate the statues to Doug Dickey for being coach of the 67 national champions, Philip Fulmer for being coach of the 98 national champions.
- 23:52SPEAKER_09: You were there.
- 23:52SPEAKER_15: What a special moment.
- 23:53SPEAKER_15: It was fantastic.
- 23:54SPEAKER_15: Uh both coaches were very humbled and very honored.
- 23:58SPEAKER_15: Uh both coaches gave great, you know, appreciative speeches.
- 24:02SPEAKER_15: And um Coach Dickey was Coach Dickey as he had.
- 24:06SPEAKER_15: As always, this is I got this.
- 24:08SPEAKER_15: I'll I'll take over and handle this now.
- 24:10SPEAKER_15: It it was just it was fantastic.
- 24:12SPEAKER_15: And you know, those were those were were coaches that for a young reporter that I dealt with, Coach Dickey as an AD, not as a coach, but he was Coach Dickey.
- 24:21SPEAKER_15: And to this day, he's Coach Dickey, and he always will be.
- 24:23SPEAKER_15: And Coach Fulmer was very patient and gracious with a very young guy trying to learn in this business.
- 24:29SPEAKER_15: Great to see both of those guys honored, but more importantly, I thought great to see so many coaches, teammates, people who were a part of their journeys as coaches at Tennessee be on hand to celebrate that moment.
- 24:42SPEAKER_15: It was a lot of fun.
- 24:43SPEAKER_09: It was a lot more of a crowd than I think what they anticipated in terms of the former players from 67 and 98 showing up.
- 24:51SPEAKER_09: Yeah, there was in a great way.
- 24:53SPEAKER_15: Yes, there were a bunch of people there.
- 24:54SPEAKER_15: I mean, and it was it was awesome to see.
- 24:56SPEAKER_15: It just tells you the respect that both those coaches have with their former players, with their staff, and even with people who used to work on this campus in administration or in many different ways that were there.
- 25:08SPEAKER_15: It was a lot of fun.
- 25:09SPEAKER_09: The Nealin Moments, sponsored by Pilot.
- 25:12SPEAKER_09: We've got more with Brent Hubbs coming up next on the Mike Keith show delivered by Uber Eats.
- 25:17SPEAKER_05: It is incredibly special to share this day with so many people who have meant so much to the University of Tennessee and our Tennessee football vols.
- 25:26SPEAKER_05: Coach Dickey and that 67 team re-established a standard for Tennessee football that future teams wanted to live up to.
- 25:36SPEAKER_05: This is a ring of honor of the legacy of Nealan's football family.
- 25:43SPEAKER_05: And that's the one thing that makes Tennessee very, very special.
- 25:46SPEAKER_11: Back with more Big Orange Insider Access, direct to the stores with the voice of the Valls.
- 25:53SPEAKER_11: And you, we are the Vall Network.
- 26:05SPEAKER_09: Freshman, playing in a game like he had never seen before in his life, which we knew would be the case.
- 26:13SPEAKER_09: We knew that would be the case when he was named the starter about five weeks ago, that when the Texas game came around, that would be an atmosphere like he'd never seen.
- 26:23SPEAKER_09: There would be things that and I asked Josh Eipel this question last week.
- 26:27SPEAKER_09: I said, How do you get him ready for things that he's clearly never seen in terms of what the competition is going to be like?
- 26:35SPEAKER_09: Unfortunately, that showed up on Saturday.
- 26:38SPEAKER_15: It did.
- 26:39SPEAKER_15: And you know, that's he's got to learn and grow from it really, really quickly because the the runway is not long here because you're in SEC play and you're going to stay in SEC play.
- 26:50SPEAKER_15: So I think the question that you have with Faison Brandon this week is where is where is he and learning and improving and growing really quickly?
- 27:01SPEAKER_15: Josh Heppel said in the offseason, one of the things he loved about Faison Brandon was how much he embraced the process of trying to win the job.
- 27:10SPEAKER_15: He also noted after the Furman game, you can't be satisfied just that you've won the job.
- 27:15SPEAKER_15: You've got to embrace it every week.
- 27:16SPEAKER_15: You've got to prepare harder each week than you even did back in the summertime.
- 27:20SPEAKER_15: So for Faison Brandon this week, it's about obviously getting healthy and being ready to go physically, but then mentally it's really taking the pictures that you saw and the things that happened to you and learn from them.
- 27:34SPEAKER_15: And some of that is when the windows, you know, what is an open window?
- 27:38SPEAKER_15: What's not an open window?
- 27:39SPEAKER_15: Throw in receivers opened.
- 27:41SPEAKER_15: Uh there were moments where his eyes I felt like dropped and it became a little bit of I'm gonna run around sort of like I did in high school type deal.
- 27:50SPEAKER_15: You can't do that in this league.
- 27:51SPEAKER_15: It's not all on him, okay?
- 27:53SPEAKER_15: And and I don't want to sound like the coach or Josh Ibel stand up here, but it does take everybody around him being better.
- 28:00SPEAKER_15: But he's gotta be better too, and he's gotta understand what's open in SEC play is different than what's open against Furman and Kennesaw State.
- 28:09SPEAKER_15: And I think that's a big growing point for him moving forward.
- 28:12SPEAKER_15: You're on the sidelines during the course of the game.
- 28:15SPEAKER_09: What did you think about his body language through the course of the game?
- 28:18SPEAKER_15: I uh you know, I thought his demeanor was calm.
- 28:20SPEAKER_15: I I didn't see great frustration, I saw disappointment, but it was immediate, you know, let me grab the iPad, talk to me about what we're seeing here and and kind of look at things that way.
- 28:31SPEAKER_15: So I I didn't I I didn't see a guy who was intimidated, I didn't see a guy who was overwhelmed.
- 28:37SPEAKER_15: Um it was fast, but he was trying to sort through it, and he was trying to sort through things, you know, what did I miss here?
- 28:44SPEAKER_15: That type of deal.
- 28:45SPEAKER_15: It's just when he got out on the field and the ball was snapped, everything for Tennessee's offense felt fast on Saturday.
- 28:52SPEAKER_15: Um that's why they just didn't have a rhythm.
- 28:54SPEAKER_15: If you get into a rhythm, maybe it slows down a little bit, but it meant the game never really felt slow for Tennessee's offense, and that's a growing point for everybody.
- 29:04SPEAKER_15: The trenches, a growing point for obviously the quarterback position.
- 29:08SPEAKER_09: And the clock management, too.
- 29:09SPEAKER_09: At the end, situationally, that was not optimum for how you want it to go.
- 29:14SPEAKER_09: It's kind of a weird deal.
- 29:16SPEAKER_09: The last play was not designed to be a Hail Mary, and yet, man, did he make a good throw to the end zone to give his receiver a chance?
- 29:24SPEAKER_15: You know, it's it's interesting.
- 29:25SPEAKER_15: There's things you look at and you say, okay, the the the out pattern to Design Brahm.
- 29:29SPEAKER_15: I mean, he's sliding a catch there, man, that's just a clock killer on that deal.
- 29:33SPEAKER_15: The 10 second runoff was rough.
- 29:35SPEAKER_15: You had a false start penalty, you had a holding penalty, you had a lot of bad things that, you know, just didn't help you.
- 29:42SPEAKER_15: The one thing I will say that I will give Faison Brandon for on the last play when the ball was snapped, and they were supposed to run a play there, he he did what he needed to do.
- 29:52SPEAKER_15: He understood it was the last play, and he had to try to get the ball to the end zone.
- 29:57SPEAKER_15: It wasn't a true Hail Mary, you didn't have everybody down there and all those things.
- 30:01SPEAKER_15: But from an individual awareness standpoint, Mikey didn't run out of bounds.
- 30:05SPEAKER_09: Well, and that's happened twice to Tennessee in the last six years.
- 30:09SPEAKER_09: So I I was gonna say there was a lack of awareness from quarterbacks on those two plays.
- 30:14SPEAKER_09: So this from an 18-year-old impressed.
- 30:17SPEAKER_15: Yeah, at least he I mean he understood that part.
- 30:19SPEAKER_15: The previous stuff did not get executed well, and there's there's coaching points and learning points, but he had enough situational awareness there to let's throw it into the end zone and see if we can get a miracle as opposed to air mailing it out of bounds or throwing a three-yard check down.
- 30:34SPEAKER_15: As I mean, he knew the clock was running out.
- 30:37SPEAKER_15: He had enough awareness at that point, and you didn't know because it felt so chaotic down there with everything that was going on with that series of plays.
- 30:45SPEAKER_09: Well, and two, the other thing, if the defensive back does not come over and tip it away, which was a nice play, by the way, Travis Smith's got a shot at that ball.
- 30:54SPEAKER_09: I don't know that he catches it.
- 30:56SPEAKER_09: I don't I mean there were two defenders standing on either side of it, but you gave your receiver, you didn't throw it out of the back of the end zone, you threw it in a place where you have a shot.
- 31:07SPEAKER_15: Well, and and at at that point, when it's a complete breakdown schoolyard play, I mean he he's rolling out, buys himself enough time, and figures out a way to get it down there, which which is all you could ask for.
- 31:19SPEAKER_15: I think the teaching moments for that offense and for everybody involved in that is just the three or four previous plays.
- 31:28SPEAKER_15: You know, it it's the it's the four yard out, you know, when your receivers are thirty yards downfield and they've got to get back to the line of scrimmage with the clock running.
- 31:37SPEAKER_15: You know, it it's the holding penalty, it's the offsides penalty, it's it's all of those things of hey, what what are we trying to accomplish here first and foremost?
- 31:46SPEAKER_15: You know, what what do we need 25 yards and we're gonna kick it?
- 31:49SPEAKER_15: Is that what we're doing?
- 31:50SPEAKER_15: Are we really gonna push it for a touchdown?
- 31:52SPEAKER_15: It's just a better awareness and a better management of that with everybody that is involved in in offensive football at that particular moment.
- 32:03SPEAKER_09: Improvement wise, has any group really come on more than the defensive line in the first month?
- 32:10SPEAKER_15: No, they they haven't.
- 32:11SPEAKER_15: You know, when you think about the question marks that you had with this defensive line, could they get home?
- 32:16SPEAKER_15: Could they pressure the quarterback?
- 32:18SPEAKER_15: Um You know, we heard Xavier Gilliam did really good things all offseason and there was a lot of excitement about him.
- 32:25SPEAKER_15: I I think he's uh he's been outstanding.
- 32:27SPEAKER_15: I think he's probably been better than even you thought he would be when you got into it.
- 32:31SPEAKER_15: But to me, when I look at the that group, it's really the emergence of of the sophomores and the returning guys here.
- 32:38SPEAKER_15: It's Tyree Weathersby, who's not a sophomore, he's a third year player, but he really lost a year with a hip.
- 32:42SPEAKER_15: He's certainly coming into his own.
- 32:44SPEAKER_15: You heard he had a great offseason physically.
- 32:47SPEAKER_15: He's starting to gain confidence.
- 32:49SPEAKER_15: You can see it in the way he's playing.
- 32:51SPEAKER_15: Marion Dye, I think Utley's playing better than what he's been playing in there, they're getting some snaps out of Isaiah Campbell.
- 32:59SPEAKER_15: They're doing some unusual things with Jeremiah Talander, excuse me, off the edge and being, you know, schematically doing some different things up there.
- 33:08SPEAKER_15: But you go back and watch it, they're winning one-on-one battles.
- 33:11SPEAKER_15: It's not just that everything's not a schemed up negative play.
- 33:15SPEAKER_15: There's some I just beat my guy.
- 33:17SPEAKER_15: And I I think Rodney Garner has got those guys playing with some great fundamentals, great with their hands, getting skinny at times, flipping their hips.
- 33:26SPEAKER_15: That they're playing well up front.
- 33:28SPEAKER_15: I mean, they really are.
- 33:29SPEAKER_09: William Enge and what's gone on with he being in the hospital and being very, very sick and it being a difficult situation.
- 33:37SPEAKER_09: I thought his linebackers stepped up for him on Saturday.
- 33:40SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I thought they played outstanding.
- 33:41SPEAKER_15: Um you can see Ariane Carter getting better and better each week.
- 33:46SPEAKER_15: That one was very important to that whole group.
- 33:49SPEAKER_15: Ariane Carter was one of the last linebackers to visit with William Inge before the team went to the hotel and and got settled in the game.
- 33:56SPEAKER_15: And it was just it was just Ariane and William having some conversations about things.
- 34:00SPEAKER_15: And uh I thought Ariane Carter made sure that group was really ready to play.
- 34:05SPEAKER_15: Um Amari Campbell's a is a good football player.
- 34:08SPEAKER_15: I mean, he's he doesn't necessarily do everything elite, but he's a good football player.
- 34:14SPEAKER_15: He's feels like he's more free than he's ever been in the system because he's got a lot of help around him and he's kind of turned loose to go make plays.
- 34:21SPEAKER_15: What that group has done, you you were asking me earlier about tackling, and what that group has done in the front seven, done by tackling well.
- 34:31SPEAKER_15: Now that group has tackled really well.
- 34:33SPEAKER_15: I think they had two or three missed tackles on Saturday, and they accounted in the front seven for like fifty something of the 69 tackles.
- 34:41SPEAKER_15: They were really good rallying to the ball, and they were really good tackling in any open space that you had.
- 34:48SPEAKER_15: Um nobody really slipped out of their grasp or got away from.
- 34:51SPEAKER_15: They played, I thought, with really good angles on Saturday.
- 34:54SPEAKER_09: Good stuff, Brent Hubbs.
- 34:55SPEAKER_09: He'll be back with us in just a moment with his hot take.
- 35:00SPEAKER_09: Looking forward to that.
- 35:01SPEAKER_09: The Mike Keith show delivered by Uber Eats continues right after this.

- 36:59SPEAKER_09: Calhoun makes it easy so you can focus on curing the Valls to victory.
- 37:04SPEAKER_09: Calhoun, a taste of tissue.
- 37:08SPEAKER_08: At Rackley Roof means we are not a one-man team.
- 37:12SPEAKER_08: We're actually not a two-man team.
- 37:13SPEAKER_08: Everyone is a critical part of the journey.
- 37:16SPEAKER_17: Championship teams are not built by one person.
- 37:19SPEAKER_17: Great companies aren't either.
- 37:21SPEAKER_04: Like the Vols, coaches and players need to learn to handle the pressure, including the pressure of success.
- 37:28SPEAKER_07: We invest in the next generation.
- 37:29SPEAKER_07: We invest in our community.
- 37:31SPEAKER_07: And most importantly, we invest in our employees.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: Want to change the world?
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: Change it one roof at a time.
- 37:38SPEAKER_04: Before I understood what nuclear truly meant, before I could use my mind to move a submarine, I had to be born for it.
- 38:15SPEAKER_23: Just better pick up tonight and your groceries will be ready.
- 38:24SPEAKER_22: What does the$7 big deal meal get you at stomach?

- 39:13SPEAKER_09: Brent Hubbs has his hot take of the week presented by Firehouse Subs.
- 39:20SPEAKER_09: I'm interested to hear this.
- 39:21SPEAKER_09: Moving towards October with a hot take.
- 39:24SPEAKER_15: Yeah, uh, I I think my hot take is that Tennessee finds their footing in the run game better.
- 39:30SPEAKER_15: Uh I think that this is an Auburn team that's given up some rushing yards, but I think Tennessee's uh commitment to running the football, maybe in some different ways.
- 39:39SPEAKER_15: Maybe not just some of the straight stuff.
- 39:41SPEAKER_15: Maybe there's a a wrinkle here and there.
- 39:43SPEAKER_15: Uh I I think Tennessee's ability to to to create yards behind the line of scrimmage in the run game, or maybe it's the wide receiver screen game, is gonna show itself back up.
- 39:53SPEAKER_15: I just think Tennessee's gonna run the football better this week.
- 39:56SPEAKER_15: I think they're gonna get to that 150 mark.
- 39:58SPEAKER_09: All right.
- 39:59SPEAKER_09: It looked like that Texas was just not gonna let Tennessee run on first down, that they were desperate to make it into second and long and then make it into third and long.
- 40:08SPEAKER_09: Do you expect Auburn will do the same thing?
- 40:11SPEAKER_15: Or will try to do the same thing?
- 40:12SPEAKER_15: I think they'll try to do the same thing.
- 40:13SPEAKER_15: I think the question is can Auburn do it with their base group or do they have to bring extra people to do that?
- 40:19SPEAKER_15: Do they have to walk a safety up closer?
- 40:21SPEAKER_15: Do they have to get more in the box?
- 40:24SPEAKER_15: Texas could play zone behind, and they played a lot more zone in the secondary than I think I anticipated, and probably a lot of other people anticipated.
- 40:32SPEAKER_15: They could do that because they won up front.
- 40:34SPEAKER_15: If Auburn, if I'm Auburn, I'm gonna try to see if I can do that.
- 40:38SPEAKER_15: If I can't do that, and then I have to commit more people to the box, then I think it lends to some greater success in the vertical passing game for Tennessee.
- 40:47SPEAKER_15: Tennessee has to get either more people in the box, or if the opponent's not gonna commit to more people in the box, they have to win in the run game against lighter boxes.
- 40:56SPEAKER_15: They couldn't do that against Texas.
- 40:58SPEAKER_15: I think they'll run the football better this week.
- 41:00SPEAKER_09: Yeah, Texas with that 370-pounder at nose tackle Jaffard and you know some of those other Watson and I mean they had some big people up front.
- 41:11SPEAKER_09: And they looked like an old school four-man defensive line in terms of how they chose to play it.
- 41:17SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 41:18SPEAKER_09: I mean, there was nothing really fancy or exotic about what they did.
- 41:22SPEAKER_09: Even when Tennessee went three wide, they they just said, here we go.
- 41:26SPEAKER_15: Yeah, and I think the thing that they did, again, they I think Will Muschamp had some other things in the bucket that he in his toolbox to get to, but when they figured out early in the game that they were going to be able to win up front with four and control the line of scrimmage without committing a bunch of extra people to the line of scrimmage, without walking safeties down in the box, they could handle it with four, then I think it changed the way they played.
- 41:52SPEAKER_15: I think the same thing happened with Jim Knowles a little bit too, when you look at what they were doing in the back end of the secondary and how they could protect themselves against some explosive plays with those wide receivers.
- 42:03SPEAKER_15: Tennessee's front seven was controlling the line of scrimmage in the run game.
- 42:07SPEAKER_15: And so what happened is both these offenses were trying to generate plays when they couldn't get the defense to react to what they wanted to do.
- 42:15SPEAKER_15: The defense said, we'll play base, we'll play a lot of our base stuff, and we don't have to change what we want to do here because we're controlling the line of scrimmage with the defensive fronts.
- 42:24SPEAKER_15: Both defensive lines really had control of that football game.
- 42:29SPEAKER_09: So my question to end with you is how excited is Brunt Hubs about seeing the smoky gray uniforms on Saturday?
- 42:35SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I think they're gonna be cool.
- 42:37SPEAKER_15: I mean, I do.
- 42:37SPEAKER_15: I think they're I think that, you know, I like them from the standpoint, and I wasn't sure I would, you know, when you were a little bit with the T not on the helmet, I wasn't sure exactly what all that would look like.
- 42:49SPEAKER_15: The thing I like about this smoky gray uniform, maybe more so than the others, and there's been some others in the past, this one pays great respect to the heritage and the tradition of Tennessee football.
- 42:59SPEAKER_15: Um, it's done it through gray, and some people will say, well, they didn't wear it, yeah, but it's the T, you know, it's the the the patch for for General Nealan.
- 43:09SPEAKER_15: There's there's great respect shown to the father of Tennessee football, if you will, and the creator of Tennessee football and Robert Nealin.
- 43:18SPEAKER_15: So I I I like the fact that it pays um, you know, it it it reflects the history of the program and it pays respect to the history.
- 43:26SPEAKER_09: What I like so much about it is it went all in.
- 43:30SPEAKER_09: It said, okay, we're gonna do this, and we're gonna do the stripes on the helmet like they used to have, and we're gonna make the helmet look like a leather helmet, and we're gonna incorporate things from the 20s, the 30s, the 40s, and the early 50s.
- 43:44SPEAKER_09: The UT, I think is kind of a neat thing.
- 43:48SPEAKER_09: And I when you saw the touches on all of it and the the Nealand Stadium on the sleeves and everything that went with it, I said, I I'm into that.
- 43:57SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's the details, the details, it's the details.
- 44:00SPEAKER_15: That all go back to the history of the program.
- 44:03SPEAKER_15: It's not a detail because it's a fashion look.
- 44:06SPEAKER_15: It's a detail that has a key point moment or a key part of the history of Tennessee football.
- 44:14SPEAKER_15: That's what I like about it.
- 44:16SPEAKER_15: I'm excited about it.
- 44:17SPEAKER_09: Brett Ups, thanks very much.
- 44:18SPEAKER_09: When we come back on the Mike Keith show delivered by Uber Eats.
- 44:21SPEAKER_09: Day Day Ames.
- 44:23SPEAKER_09: Yo, basketball's rolling.
- 44:26SPEAKER_09: It's time to go.
- 44:27SPEAKER_09: Hey, we're gonna play an exhibition game in two, two a little over two weeks.
- 44:31SPEAKER_15: Are you ready?
- 44:32SPEAKER_09: No.
- 44:32SPEAKER_09: But I like talking to Day Day Ames, and you'll like it too when we continue on the Mike Keith show right after this.
- 44:38SPEAKER_13: It's time for the Rackley Roofing recap.
- 44:41SPEAKER_13: Rackly Roofing, transforming the roofing industry and the proud official roofer of the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 44:48SPEAKER_12: Hey Vall Nation, it's Sarah Detweiler, and it's time now for the Rackley Roofing recap.
- 44:53SPEAKER_12: Number 17 Tennessee football went toe-to-toe with the top-ranked Texas football team Saturday afternoon in Neeland Stadium.
- 45:02SPEAKER_12: With the Longhorns escaping Rocky Top with a 20-17 victory.
- 45:07SPEAKER_12: The balls pulled within three on a 30-yard touchdown from Faison Brandon to Mike Matthews with just over a minute remaining.
- 45:14SPEAKER_12: Then Ariane Carter recovered the ensuing onside kick to give Tennessee one final chance.
- 45:20SPEAKER_12: Defensively, the balls held Texas to just 61 rushing yards while recording six sacks and 10 tackles for loss.
- 45:29SPEAKER_12: Elsewhere, number 13 Tennessee volleyball also battled one of the nation's best, taking number seven Texas to five sets Friday night at the Food City Center.
- 45:39SPEAKER_12: Kennedy Rogers led the Lady Balls with 16 kills and a career-high 12 digs in front of a program record crowd of over 9,200 fans.
- 45:50SPEAKER_12: And Tennessee Cross Country turned in a great performance at the Games Creek Classic.
- 45:56SPEAKER_12: With the men's team finishing second in a 30-team field, just six points behind number 16 Arkansas.
- 46:03SPEAKER_12: Nelson Moppy Satek led Tennessee with an eighth place finish in a college best time of 2250.3.
- 46:10SPEAKER_12: That was the Rackley Roofing recap.
- 46:12SPEAKER_12: Rackley Roofing, transforming the roofing industry in the proud official roofer of the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 46:19SPEAKER_11: Mike Key, Mike Key, back with more Big Orange Insider Accent.
- 46:24SPEAKER_11: We are the Mall Network.
- 46:45SPEAKER_09: The Chicago native comes to Knoxville after playing last season at Cal.
- 46:49SPEAKER_09: And in Tennessee and with Coach Rick Barnes, Day Day Ames believes that he has finally found a home.
- 46:59SPEAKER_09: And Tennessee certainly has some Chicago on this basketball team, which is really exciting.
- 47:07SPEAKER_09: What is Chicago basketball all about?
- 47:10SPEAKER_09: Guys who come from the Windy City?
- 47:12SPEAKER_19: Really just about the toughness.
- 47:14SPEAKER_19: You know, never back it down from nobody, no matter what your name is, who you is, what type of status you got, we come to play every time.
- 47:21SPEAKER_09: Where did you grow up playing basketball in Chicago?
- 47:24SPEAKER_19: Uh Southside.
- 47:25SPEAKER_09: Okay, so you're playing on the south side, go to an outdoor court, you go to a gym.
- 47:31SPEAKER_09: Where do you go play pickup ball?
- 47:33SPEAKER_19: When I was a kid, my pops used to take me to the outdoor court, you know, but then once I really started getting good, we start going indoors.
- 47:40SPEAKER_09: When you go play at the outdoor court, are you the youngest guy there?
- 47:43SPEAKER_09: For sure.
- 47:43SPEAKER_09: What do you learn from that?
- 47:46SPEAKER_19: Um, really just hard work.
- 47:48SPEAKER_19: You know, me and my pops used waking up like 6 a.m.
- 47:51SPEAKER_19: going outside, shooting for like an hour, two hours every day, and then after school going back up there and shooting some more.
- 47:58SPEAKER_19: So really just hard work.
- 47:59SPEAKER_09: And no autopsy, no foul?
- 48:02SPEAKER_09: So well, the term was uh unless someone was hurt badly, there was no foul.
- 48:08SPEAKER_19: Yeah, for sure.
- 48:09SPEAKER_09: So when you play in that style with that kind of toughness, you play through the whistle, you finish the shot, you understand what it takes, and that becomes just ingrained in who you are no matter where you play.
- 48:23SPEAKER_09: How much of your dad's background in basketball has carried to you, Day Day?
- 48:30SPEAKER_19: I think all of it.
- 48:31SPEAKER_19: You know, he the one that showed me how to dribble, so I feel like all of it for real.
- 48:35SPEAKER_09: When I watch you play, I sometimes say, is Day Day Ames a point guard?
- 48:40SPEAKER_09: Or is Day Day Ames an off guard?
- 48:42SPEAKER_09: Or is he both?
- 48:43SPEAKER_09: Tell me.
- 48:44SPEAKER_19: I think I'm both.
- 48:45SPEAKER_19: Okay.
- 48:46SPEAKER_19: You know, I can facilitate, I can score, I can do it all.
- 48:49SPEAKER_09: All right, what do you like to do best on the basketball court?
- 48:53SPEAKER_19: Um really both.
- 48:56SPEAKER_19: You know, I feel good getting my teammates involved, and I also feel good going for 20-30, so really both.
- 49:02SPEAKER_09: Tell me about um working with Terrence Hill and what that's like, because it feels like, and I again I'm just watching practice, so I don't know.
- 49:10SPEAKER_09: But it feels like he's a guy that can do both.
- 49:13SPEAKER_09: So when I watch you guys together on the court, sometimes it's like he's running the team, and then sometimes it's like you're running the team.
- 49:21SPEAKER_19: Do I get it right?
- 49:22SPEAKER_19: Yeah, you get it right.
- 49:23SPEAKER_19: You know, we both can switch off.
- 49:24SPEAKER_19: You know, he just like me, he can score on the ball and off the ball, and I could do the same.
- 49:28SPEAKER_19: So I feel like having him in the backcourt is me is real special.
- 49:32SPEAKER_19: So Miles Rubin's another guy from Chicago.
- 49:34SPEAKER_19: Did you know him growing up?
- 49:36SPEAKER_19: Yeah, we went to the same middle school.
- 49:37SPEAKER_09: Is that right?
- 49:38SPEAKER_09: The same middle school.
- 49:40SPEAKER_09: Uh-huh.
- 49:40SPEAKER_09: What was Miles like in middle school?
- 49:42SPEAKER_19: Same Miles, you know, big, tall, you know, you had a twin brother too.
- 49:46SPEAKER_19: We play all play on the same basketball team, they were the two big.
- 49:49SPEAKER_19: So you're saying.
- 49:50SPEAKER_09: Okay, so his Chicago edition, too, is another, from a mindset standpoint, a good thing.
- 49:56SPEAKER_19: Yes, uh.
- 49:57SPEAKER_09: All right.
- 49:58SPEAKER_09: As this team develops and pulls together with so many players coming from so many different places, what's the most important thing that's gotta happen as we get into the November, December headed toward conference play in January?
- 50:12SPEAKER_19: I feel like we all gotta have each other back, you know.
- 50:15SPEAKER_19: During any situation through adversity, we all gotta be together and stay together and be connected.
- 50:20SPEAKER_09: Does this team have a leader yet?
- 50:22SPEAKER_09: Has has somebody really emerged to that level?
- 50:26SPEAKER_19: I say DB, you know, stepping in, everybody's like transfer was new, and Dwayne, you know, he stood up.
- 50:32SPEAKER_19: Dwayne Brown.
- 50:32SPEAKER_19: Yep.
- 50:33SPEAKER_19: He stood up and helped us, you know, learn things a little quicker.
- 50:36SPEAKER_19: And T Roy, too.
- 50:38SPEAKER_19: So, no two.
- 50:39SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 50:40SPEAKER_09: Tell me about uh the player on this team that maybe has surprised you or caught your eye the most since practices began in the summer.
- 50:50SPEAKER_19: I say, I say the little freshman keys.
- 50:52SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 50:53SPEAKER_19: You know, um coming in.
- 50:55SPEAKER_19: Marquise Clark.
- 50:56SPEAKER_19: Yep, you know, coming in, you know, everything was new to him, but I feel like he's starting to really figure it out.
- 51:01SPEAKER_19: He's gonna he's gonna be a great player for sure.
- 51:02SPEAKER_09: All right.
- 51:03SPEAKER_09: You knew Juke Harris before.
- 51:06SPEAKER_09: I mean, you had what 31 against Wake in the last time you saw him?
- 51:10SPEAKER_09: So you've gone head to head.
- 51:12SPEAKER_09: What is Juke Harris for all the hype?
- 51:15SPEAKER_09: What is he as a player that you've gotten to know now that you're on his team, different than what you knew playing against him in the ACC?
- 51:25SPEAKER_19: I say he played hard, real hard.
- 51:27SPEAKER_19: You know, playing against him in the ACC, I knew that he was playing hard.
- 51:30SPEAKER_19: He getting rebounds, dunking it.
- 51:31SPEAKER_19: So I'm like, okay, there's gonna be a good teammate, right?
- 51:34SPEAKER_19: Here, this is somebody I could play with.
- 51:36SPEAKER_09: Tennessee guard Day Day Ames.
- 51:38SPEAKER_09: Uh, I know you have a lot of good friends at First Horizon Bank, and you're enjoying the relationship with them.
- 51:43SPEAKER_09: Have you gotten to know them?
- 51:44SPEAKER_19: Um, they are real nice people.
- 51:47SPEAKER_19: You know, um talking to them.
- 51:49SPEAKER_19: They was good people.
- 51:50SPEAKER_09: Good stuff.
- 51:51SPEAKER_09: Yes, sir.
- 51:51SPEAKER_09: First Horizon Bank helping us to bring Day Day Ames here for this visit.
