- 0:01Speaker 1: By the summer of twenty twenty three, mother of two
- 0:04Speaker 1: and positivity coach, April Holt had a following of over
- 0:08Speaker 1: two hundred thousand on TikTok. April built her quirky and
- 0:12Speaker 1: optimistic online image around her happy home life. Her post
- 0:17Speaker 1: told the story of overcoming adversity and manifesting great things.
- 0:23Speaker 2: But yeah, keep growing, y'all, keep manifesting and have a great.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Hammerk In late July, April was found unresponsive in the
- 0:32Speaker 1: bathroom of her home. She would die days later. While
- 0:36Speaker 1: law enforcement was content to categorize the case as a
- 0:39Speaker 1: tragedy of April's own choosing, the twenty nine year old's
- 0:42Speaker 1: mother knew better. This is the story of a mother's
- 0:47Speaker 1: unflinching fight for justice. Hi there, I'm Kevin, and welcome
- 0:55Speaker 1: to Just Thought Lounge. Today's case takes us to the
- 0:58Speaker 1: outskirts of Nashville, tennis See, where a young mother, entrepreneur,
- 1:02Speaker 1: and influencer met a questionable end. Let's take a look.
- 1:22Speaker 1: April Holt celebrated her twenty ninth birthday in early July
- 1:25Speaker 1: twenty twenty three. The young entrepreneur from Antioch had already
- 1:30Speaker 1: accomplished quite a bit in life. An independent lash technician,
- 1:35Speaker 1: April had left her job and launched out on her own,
- 1:38Speaker 1: building her own business and being her own boss.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Happy twenty ninth birthday to me.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I am blessed to experience another year of life.
- 1:47Speaker 4: I have lived through ten thousand, five hundred and eighty
- 1:49Speaker 4: five days.
- 1:51Speaker 1: As April reflected on her greatest achievements, she was most
- 1:55Speaker 1: grateful for family, particularly her two children, eleven year old
- 2:00Speaker 1: old Serenity and her seven year old son Denzel. April
- 2:04Speaker 1: was an engaged, loving mother. She shared the best of
- 2:07Speaker 1: her family life with the world through her TikTok account.
- 2:11Speaker 1: She focused on positivity videos, presenting a spiritual life and
- 2:16Speaker 1: coaching her over two hundred thousand followers on the value
- 2:20Speaker 1: of manifesting the life you want. Her videos were at
- 2:23Speaker 1: times motivating.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I just pray is saying good energy to anybody who's
- 2:29Speaker 2: seen this, I hope you at an amazing day on purpose,
- 2:32Speaker 2: be intentional and growth, just a little bit progress over perfection.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Sometimes they were goofy. Over the years, a few of
- 2:57Speaker 1: April's posts also became deeply honest and revealing. April's homeschooling
- 3:02Speaker 1: as a child was a particularly sore point. She posted
- 3:07Speaker 1: about what she described as her isolation from society. This
- 3:11Speaker 1: was an experience she learned from and overcame in her
- 3:15Speaker 1: teenage years. April and her husband, thirty three year old
- 3:21Speaker 1: don Van Holt, lived the ups and downs of their
- 3:23Speaker 1: marriage online. They shared their origin story friends that became
- 3:28Speaker 1: best friends, that became lovers and eventually husband and wife
- 3:32Speaker 1: and parents to daughter Serenity, whom April had when she
- 3:36Speaker 1: was a teen, and their son Denzel.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Nice question answer, right now, best friends that came first,
- 3:45Speaker 5: We are a friend. But honestly, if we were friends.
- 3:51Speaker 6: First, we weren't the last. That's been the base of
- 3:54Speaker 6: the whole relationship foundation that we were friends. And so
- 3:57Speaker 6: even through the bluishit weekend junk around and maintain that flush.
- 4:03Speaker 6: I mean, it's the word to our several So.
- 4:09Speaker 2: He really friend ever, the best, the best friend I
- 4:12Speaker 2: could ever ask for, and I'm married.
- 4:16Speaker 1: There were rough patches, including the period of separation that
- 4:19Speaker 1: Donovan mentions. The couple had also faced financial hardship, bouts
- 4:23Speaker 1: of depression, and serious health issues. Always positive, April framed
- 4:29Speaker 1: their story as a journey of the pair overcoming adversity.
- 4:33Speaker 1: The story that she told always ended with a love
- 4:36Speaker 1: and success. Not all of us are comfortable with sharing
- 4:42Speaker 1: our personal struggles online for the world to see. Indeed,
- 4:46Speaker 1: there are many reasons to be concerned for online privacy

- 6:14Speaker 1: morning of Friday, July twenty eighth, April spoke with her mother,
- 6:17Speaker 1: Jamie on the phone. Briefly. They had plans to see
- 6:21Speaker 1: the Barbie movie, but she couldn't make it that afternoon.
- 6:24Speaker 1: They agreed to meet at their church the following day.
- 6:27Speaker 1: It was just a few hours later that Jamie received
- 6:30Speaker 1: a phone call, one that she would never forget. Donovan
- 6:34Speaker 1: was on the other end. April had been rushed to
- 6:36Speaker 1: the hospital. He said their young son had found her
- 6:39Speaker 1: in the bathroom. She was in the shower, a plastic
- 6:42Speaker 1: bag taped over her head. April wasn't breathing.
- 6:50Speaker 7: We're going to go see the Barbie movie, she said.
- 6:52Speaker 7: Donovan has to work. I can't go to the movie,
- 6:54Speaker 7: but I'll meet you at church in Blast. This is
- 6:56Speaker 7: the Blast classroom tomorrow. The phone rang and it was Donovan,
- 7:01Speaker 7: and he said he was upset, kind of like a
- 7:05Speaker 7: panic upset.
- 7:06Speaker 8: He'said, we found April.
- 7:07Speaker 7: She wasn't breathing, and so she's an ambulance on the
- 7:11Speaker 7: way to hospital.
- 7:12Speaker 1: At the hospital, Jamie recalled, Donovan continued to act strangely.
- 7:17Speaker 1: He was not expressing the kind of distress and confusion
- 7:20Speaker 1: one would expect from a distraught husband. She thought he
- 7:23Speaker 1: allowed her to make all of the medical decisions regarding
- 7:26Speaker 1: April's treatment as they fought to save her. Jamie recalled
- 7:30Speaker 1: that Donovan held his head in his hands and he
- 7:33Speaker 1: rocked back and forth. After three days of further emotional agony,
- 7:38Speaker 1: on July thirty first, April had still not regained consciousness.
- 7:43Speaker 1: She was declared dead from her injuries. In November, the
- 7:49Speaker 1: autopsy report was released. The results were not what Jamie
- 7:53Speaker 1: had expected. The medical examiner concluded that the cause of
- 7:57Speaker 1: death was suffocation. The conclusion reached by the Metro Nashville
- 8:01Speaker 1: Police was that there had been no foul play.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Let's talk about how I'm gonna fake it till I'm
- 8:08Speaker 2: make it.
- 8:09Speaker 3: I put it on lash extensions because I had him
- 8:11Speaker 3: into breakdown the other night and I plugged.
- 8:13Speaker 8: All of my lashes off I think I can not
- 8:15Speaker 8: have a video.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Mean, if not, I I'm just putting for everything.
- 8:18Speaker 9: But yeah, let's get it to it.
- 8:20Speaker 3: So lately, I have been going through just a lot,
- 8:26Speaker 3: and I can definitely say that I'm in like a
- 8:29Speaker 3: depressed state, like I'm just overwhelmed, and I know that
- 8:34Speaker 3: like I'm manifesting more negative experience with all myself with
- 8:38Speaker 3: how I've been. So I have to get out of
- 8:40Speaker 3: this funk, so them to literally fake it till I
- 8:42Speaker 3: make it. And I've done this before.
- 8:44Speaker 1: This isn't This is the first time investigators informed Jamie
- 8:49Speaker 1: Dickerson that her daughter's case would be closed, there was
- 8:52Speaker 1: nothing further to investigate. Jamie rejected the decision outright. She
- 8:58Speaker 1: told investigators that she would get continue and walked out
- 9:01Speaker 1: on them.
- 9:02Speaker 7: After they closed April's case, DA and everybody agreed to
- 9:05Speaker 7: close it. I got up, marched out of that room,
- 9:07Speaker 7: and I said, I'm not done. I'm going to keep investigating.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Jamie knew her daughter well. She knew that both faith
- 9:13Speaker 1: and resilience were qualities that April had in abundance. Jamie
- 9:17Speaker 1: also believed that there was no way that April would
- 9:20Speaker 1: have chosen to leave her children. Someone had taken her life,
- 9:24Speaker 1: and Jamie believed that she knew exactly who that person was.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Two weeks prior to her death, April had filed for divorce.
- 9:33Speaker 1: This was not the first time the marriage had been
- 9:36Speaker 1: a rocky one. Indeed, the couple had originally sought a
- 9:40Speaker 1: divorce years earlier, leading to a three year separation.
- 9:44Speaker 10: Oh God, I saw the story is that we are
- 9:46Speaker 10: getting divorced because for a lot of decisions. It's my
- 9:51Speaker 10: best friend. I still love it to dive like, we
- 9:53Speaker 10: still got a child together. We're still going to be
- 9:55Speaker 10: hanging out most days of the week. But at the
- 9:59Speaker 10: end of the day, we got ship to do. You
- 10:03Speaker 10: feel she has a path to go. I got a
- 10:05Speaker 10: path to go, but I passed to pay her live.
- 10:07Speaker 2: We always going to.
- 10:08Speaker 10: Be next to you too, And who's to say what's
- 10:10Speaker 10: gonna happen in the future. All we know is right now,
- 10:13Speaker 10: right now, it's the best I mean, real time, is
- 10:16Speaker 10: the best decision for both of us.
- 10:18Speaker 7: She needs for me to do what I need.
- 10:20Speaker 2: To do so we can grow and heal and elevates
- 10:26Speaker 2: know our feelings. This is not a messy divorce or
- 10:28Speaker 2: anything like that. We don't do that this is like
- 10:30Speaker 2: I see like he said, this is my best friend
- 10:33Speaker 2: at the end of the day.
- 10:34Speaker 3: He has been before, the relationship, before the marriage, before
- 10:36Speaker 3: the kid.
- 10:38Speaker 7: So nothing.
- 10:41Speaker 10: Look at her like I would never lose this forever
- 10:45Speaker 10: for real.
- 10:48Speaker 2: So we're good y'all real, like for real promise.
- 10:53Speaker 1: April and Donovan separated, but never formally cut ties. They
- 10:58Speaker 1: continued to present a happy front to their followers, and
- 11:01Speaker 1: perhaps some of this was genuine, or perhaps they were
- 11:05Speaker 1: in a deeply unhealthy cycle, because after an extended separation,
- 11:09Speaker 1: the two decided to rekindle their romance and give it
- 11:13Speaker 1: another go. In their videos, they prided themselves on their
- 11:17Speaker 1: ability to forgive, to embrace open lines of communication, and
- 11:21Speaker 1: to grow as individuals while together. The darkest moments of
- 11:54Speaker 1: their relationship seemed never to reach April's TikTok account, but
- 11:58Speaker 1: the arguments must have escalated. Unlike previous occasions. When she
- 12:02Speaker 1: sought to separate in July twenty twenty three, April was
- 12:06Speaker 1: not backing down. She told her mother that she was
- 12:09Speaker 1: holding firm and leaving Donovan for good. Donovan must have
- 12:14Speaker 1: been just as certain. Jamie learned later that he had
- 12:17Speaker 1: pawned his wedding ring just a week before April died.
- 12:23Speaker 11: Me am I the drama. I don't think I'm the drama.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Maybe I am am I the fella.
- 12:29Speaker 11: I don't think I'm the villain.
- 12:32Speaker 1: On July twenty eighth, the day that April was found
- 12:35Speaker 1: unconscious in her shower, she and Donovan had been having
- 12:38Speaker 1: an argument. The details of their disagreement remain unclear. That morning,
- 12:44Speaker 1: Denzel heard his parents fighting, but he could not distinguish
- 12:47Speaker 1: the words that were being exchanged. He later recounted to
- 12:51Speaker 1: his grandmother what he recalled from that horrible day.
- 12:56Speaker 4: On July twenty eighth, she woke up, drank her cap
- 13:00Speaker 4: journaled as usual, enjoying her peaceful morning, hugged and kissed
- 13:05Speaker 4: her seven year old son, Denzel, and her and her
- 13:08Speaker 4: husband then went into the bathroom and began to argue
- 13:11Speaker 4: and fight. My seven year old grandson put his ear
- 13:15Speaker 4: to the door and heard his parents fighting, and he
- 13:17Speaker 4: looked underneath to see both of their feet. He then
- 13:21Speaker 4: listened some more, but he couldn't understand what they were saying,
- 13:23Speaker 4: and so he then ran to his room. His dad
- 13:27Speaker 4: shortly after came into his room, and he got him
- 13:30Speaker 4: dressed and he fed him, and he then had him
- 13:34Speaker 4: go check on his mom. He asked him to go
- 13:36Speaker 4: check on his mom when one was then called. We
- 13:39Speaker 4: got to the hospital and she had no brain function
- 13:44Speaker 4: and no blood flow to her brain. We did not
- 13:47Speaker 4: find out about the bag, which was not disclosed to
- 13:49Speaker 4: us for over six hours. In that time, her husband
- 13:54Speaker 4: had went back to the apartment two times, not knowing
- 13:57Speaker 4: what was I don't know what he was doing there.
- 14:00Speaker 4: On July thirty first of twenty twenty three, my daughter
- 14:05Speaker 4: was pronounced dead and I want justice.
- 14:13Speaker 1: What followed was a fight that Jamie would need to wage.
- 14:15Speaker 1: To apply public pressure to get the attention of the
- 14:18Speaker 1: Nashville Police as well as the DA's office. She began
- 14:22Speaker 1: with seeking exposure. Jamie sought out local news stations, she
- 14:26Speaker 1: reached out to area celebrities, and she posted about the
- 14:30Speaker 1: case regularly on her social media. It was an uphill battle.
- 14:34Speaker 1: After the investigation had been officially closed, it became difficult,
- 14:39Speaker 1: if not impossible, to gain any traction in the media.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Coverage of April's case on the mainstream outlets at that
- 14:46Speaker 1: time completely ceased.
- 14:49Speaker 7: A guys, I wanted to let you guys know something
- 14:51Speaker 7: which I don't understand if I'm doing something wrong or
- 14:54Speaker 7: how I reach out. But there has not been one
- 14:58Speaker 7: news channel in the local Nashville area that has picked
- 15:01Speaker 7: up April Hold's story my daughter, not one from day one.
- 15:06Speaker 7: And it's been fourteen months, and I've reached out to
- 15:09Speaker 7: Channel two, Channel four, Channel seven, Channel five, channel any
- 15:14Speaker 7: channel out there, including I've reached out to many of
- 15:17Speaker 7: the celebrities that are out here. Not one will even
- 15:19Speaker 7: respond or take anything on, including I've reached out.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Jamie did not only campaign online. She requested the full
- 15:29Speaker 1: case file and began researching. By launching a formal complaint
- 15:33Speaker 1: with the Community Review Board in Nashville, Jamie forced a
- 15:36Speaker 1: full review of the handling of April's case. Eventually, the
- 15:41Speaker 1: Metro Nashville Police Department launched a second investigation. Four months later,
- 15:46Speaker 1: they returned with a forty seven page report. The reinvestigation
- 15:50Speaker 1: did not prompt a change in the categorization of the
- 15:53Speaker 1: case or the nature of April's death. However, what it
- 15:58Speaker 1: did provide was a wealth of detail for Jamie to scrutinize.
- 16:03Speaker 1: She combed through the report and related documentation over many hours.
- 16:08Speaker 1: The days turned into weeks and months while Jamie worked
- 16:11Speaker 1: through what was available and tried to make sense of
- 16:14Speaker 1: the evidence she had to work with. Meanwhile, the grieving
- 16:18Speaker 1: mother also aimed to provide a stable in support of
- 16:20Speaker 1: home life for her grandchildren. She posted about taking Serenity
- 16:25Speaker 1: and Denzel to grief counseling. She shared how their nightmares
- 16:28Speaker 1: kept her and her husband up at all hours. Jamie
- 16:32Speaker 1: also spoke openly about her own grief, even publishing a
- 16:36Speaker 1: book about her bereavement process entitled Grieving through Grace and the.
- 16:42Speaker 7: Proceeds that come from this book will also be publishing
- 16:46Speaker 7: a children's book called Brief with Me and that will
- 16:49Speaker 7: be the next one that will be in the series,
- 16:51Speaker 7: and then Grieving through Grace the next chapter is the
- 16:56Speaker 7: one that will follow this book.
- 16:58Speaker 1: She also became an advocate against domestic violence. Many of
- 17:02Speaker 1: her insights highlighted the complex dynamic at work in many relationships.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Abuse does not always look the same or the way
- 17:10Speaker 1: we expect it to. During this period, there was also
- 17:14Speaker 1: the struggle to keep the children together. In the months
- 17:17Speaker 1: following his wife's death, Donovan Holt relocated to Texas. Not surprisingly,
- 17:23Speaker 1: he wished for his son to join him there, and.
- 17:27Speaker 8: He didn't come with on that trip to go drop
- 17:30Speaker 8: him off with his dad. She said she just couldn't
- 17:32Speaker 8: do it. Who he was crying? Who he didn't want
- 17:39Speaker 8: to go? He was, he was crying and saying he
- 17:41Speaker 8: just he said, Grammy, I'll do anything I can to
- 17:44Speaker 8: try to stay with you. I don't influence him in
- 17:47Speaker 8: any way with his emotion. He's often told that I do,
- 17:52Speaker 8: and I on that other side, but I would never
- 17:55Speaker 8: do that.
- 17:56Speaker 9: I want him to have an opinion of his own,
- 17:58Speaker 9: and I want him to be happy, no matter where
- 18:00Speaker 9: that is, whether that I just want him to be
- 18:03Speaker 9: happy and have a fulfilling childhood and so and I
- 18:07Speaker 9: want him to be with his sister.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Jamie's relationship with her former son in law was growing tense.
- 18:13Speaker 1: In April of twenty twenty four, Jamie ceased her posts
- 18:17Speaker 1: detailing her concerns over April's case, announcing that she had
- 18:20Speaker 1: been placed under a gag order. While her online advocacy
- 18:25Speaker 1: took a necessary pause, Jamie's dedication to seeking justice for
- 18:29Speaker 1: April nonetheless moved forward with full force. Initially, investigators had
- 18:37Speaker 1: claimed that April showed no signs of trauma stemming from
- 18:40Speaker 1: the incident that had caused her death. According to Jamie,
- 18:44Speaker 1: there were visible signs on April at the hospital that
- 18:47Speaker 1: suggested this was not true. April had noticeable bruises. The
- 18:52Speaker 1: autopsy recorded marks on her neck, her thighs, and her ankles.
- 18:57Speaker 1: She even had a gash on her inner thigh. The
- 19:00Speaker 1: most significant piece of evidence in this report, which was
- 19:03Speaker 1: overlooked by the initial investigation, could not be ignored. There
- 19:09Speaker 1: was only one set of fingerprints on the bag taped
- 19:12Speaker 1: to April's head, and there was only one set of
- 19:15Speaker 1: fingerprints on that duct tape. Those fingerprints were not April's.
- 19:20Speaker 1: They were a match to Donovan Holt. In September, Jamie
- 19:24Speaker 1: confronted her former son in law directly with the information
- 19:27Speaker 1: that she had uncovered. During this conversation, Donovan confessed, Now.
- 19:34Speaker 7: I said, you can tell me the truth or I'm
- 19:36Speaker 7: going to go meet with the cold case team.
- 19:38Speaker 8: Next Thursday and have this reopened. I'm not shocked.
- 19:41Speaker 7: I don't have that emotion because I've been literally doing
- 19:44Speaker 7: this for a year knowing what happened.
- 19:46Speaker 8: I already knew.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Jamie went to the police with the confession, which she
- 19:50Speaker 1: had recorded. In light of this development, April's autopsy was
- 19:54Speaker 1: reviewed and its conclusion finally changed. The manner of death
- 20:00Speaker 1: was formally recategorized to a homicide. On September twentieth, twenty
- 20:09Speaker 1: twenty four, the MNPD announced that Donovan Holt had been
- 20:13Speaker 1: arrested in San Antonio after he confessed to killing his
- 20:17Speaker 1: wife directly to detectives. Donovan was indicted by a grand
- 20:21Speaker 1: jury for reckless homicide, evidence tampering, and false reporting.
- 20:27Speaker 12: I also want to update you that there has been
- 20:29Speaker 12: an arrest. The detective called me and did tell me
- 20:32Speaker 12: that Donovan Holt has been arrested in the state of
- 20:36Speaker 12: Texas for the homicide of April Holt. He is being
- 20:40Speaker 12: transported back to Tennessee, and so that is the update
- 20:46Speaker 12: for now. We do have him in handcuffs and he
- 20:50Speaker 12: is being transported back. So now we're just waiting for
- 20:54Speaker 12: the next steps.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Donovan was transported from Texas to Tennessee and held on
- 20:59Speaker 1: a seventy five one thousand dollars bond pending an arraignment
- 21:02Speaker 1: hearing scheduled for October twenty third. After speaking with the
- 21:06Speaker 1: Nashville Colt case Unit, any ambiguity that remained in the
- 21:10Speaker 1: case was resolved. The thirty three year old told police
- 21:13Speaker 1: the same version of events that he had conceded to
- 21:16Speaker 1: his former mother in law. He had angrily strangled his
- 21:20Speaker 1: wife in the heat of an argument. To conceal the crime,
- 21:23Speaker 1: he had dragged her into the shower, positioned the bag
- 21:26Speaker 1: over her head, and taped it in place. Then he
- 21:30Speaker 1: left her to make lunch for their son. Only after
- 21:33Speaker 1: Denzel had eaten, he asked him to check on his
- 21:36Speaker 1: mother and proceeded to call the ambulance. April's children are
- 21:44Speaker 1: with their grandmother, who has reported that they are doing
- 21:47Speaker 1: as well as one could expect under the circumstances. Some
- 21:51Speaker 1: days are better than others. Jamie has thanked her supporters
- 21:54Speaker 1: on social media for supporting her and the family through
- 21:58Speaker 1: this horrific ordeal. Her fight, it seems, is not quite over.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Jamie is currently campaigning to have the murder charge against
- 22:06Speaker 1: Donovan increased from reckless homicide to first degree murder.
- 22:12Speaker 7: I am trying to get the charges increased. There's no
- 22:14Speaker 7: reason that they are as low as they are. There's
- 22:17Speaker 7: no reason that they shouldn't be a first degree instead
- 22:20Speaker 7: of reckless homicide. There shall also be child endangerment added
- 22:24Speaker 7: to these charges, and so that is my that's my
- 22:27Speaker 7: next uphill battle that I'm trying to fight. I should
- 22:33Speaker 7: have a new DA which will be my third one
- 22:35Speaker 7: now sometime next week that will be assigned to this case,
- 22:39Speaker 7: and so I will just be on them and making
- 22:41Speaker 7: sure that I can do everything that I can to
- 22:43Speaker 7: get these charges increased.
- 22:45Speaker 1: That was the tragic story of April Lynnholt. Thank you
- 22:52Speaker 1: once again for joining me, and a special thanks to
- 22:55Speaker 1: Alicia Rockland and naw Man for joining the member's lounge.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I'm Kevin, this is just thought lounge, and I'll see
- 23:03Speaker 1: in the next one.
- 23:06Speaker 11: When the scene plays, tell me who the screen saves.
- 23:08Speaker 11: I can hear the crimes repeat. Gotta take my time
- 23:11Speaker 11: because these crimes get deep, but these stories can't hide.
- 23:13Speaker 11: Let me find my seat, Kevin, go ahead and settle in.
- 23:16Speaker 11: Gotta be selective, doing all the research, keeping it objective,
- 23:19Speaker 11: always being effective. Can say he got a neck
