- 0:01Well, I think leaving times are a special time because it's a transition, and so
- 0:05you're closer to the scene, you know?
- 0:08And so it's a time You are closer to the scene.
- 0:10So it's a time that you have more truths apparent, more love apparent, more sadness
- 0:18apparent, more suffering, more joy.
- 0:20Opens you up.
- 0:21Yeah, so your heart is really open.
- 0:22Cracks you wide open.
- 0:23You see the life thing in a way.
- 0:25Yeah.
- 0:25Yeah, that's totally true.
- 0:26Yeah.
- 0:28That's a very good way of putting it, actually.
- 0:31Yeah.
- 0:31It makes me feel seen.
- 0:34Yeah.
- 0:35Yes, I am cracked wide open.
- 0:44I arrived in Mexico City about a month ago.
- 0:47Give or take a few days.
- 0:50And for much of that month I've been in the mindset of a tourist.
- 0:54Albeit one who has an apartment here.
- 0:57I've been existing from excitement to excitement.
- 1:02From dopamine hit to dopamine hit.
- 1:06Rarely allowing myself the time to stop and just breathe.
- 1:10To process the reality of this new life of mine.
- 1:14To actually take the time to create a life here, instead of just pretending.
- 1:20Because when you're a tourist, you can stand on the outside looking in.
- 1:24You're kind of expected to, really.
- 1:26The glimpses you do get of the inside are fleeting and often somewhat inauthentic.
- 1:32You don't have to figure out where to buy toilet paper, or spatulas, because
- 1:37your brief time staying wherever you are staying won't require that, and
- 1:42in fact it rejects the mundanity of day to day life wherever you are.
- 1:48That's part of the fun.
- 1:48The fun of travel, right?
- 1:51Escaping your day to day life.
- 1:53Escaping the mundane.
- 1:55And for the last month, in spite of the fact that I've had to buy
- 1:58toilet paper and a spatula, that's largely where my head has been.
- 2:03A feeling that this isn't my real life, when in reality
- 2:08this is precisely my real life.
- 2:11This right here sitting in my apartment in Roma, on a Sunday morning, drinking coffee
- 2:15in a living room, that has gradually started to feel more More and more
- 2:19like my own, in spite of the books and plants and unfortunate motorcycle decor.
- 2:26This is where I live now.
- 2:28This is my normal life, in spite of its present abnormality.
- 2:33And I need to start living as if it is.
- 2:37I need to stop living on the outside of Mexico City and
- 2:40start living on the inside.
- 2:42I need to stop avoiding interacting with this place.
- 2:46I need to stop drinking so much.
- 2:48I need to stop distracting myself so much, I need to find a routine, I
- 2:52need to stop ordering food from Uber Eats, and it feels appropriate on
- 2:59this Easter morning, almost a month into my time here, that I do a reset,
- 3:05because isn't that what Easter's about?
- 3:07Rebirth?
- 3:08Reset?
- 3:09They both have re in it, so.
- 3:11I'm running with it.
- 3:12And I think that this is what Jesus would want, really.
- 3:15When he did the best magic trick of all time, came out of that tomb, and
- 3:20scared the shit out of everybody.
- 3:22Why isn't that in the Bible?
- 3:24If a friend of mine got crucified, died, and was buried, and then
- 3:28a few days later was alive, I would be freaked the fuck out.
- 3:35Pardon my French, but I don't think there's any indication in the Bible that
- 3:39people were like, whoa, what the hell?
- 3:41Jesus, what?
- 3:42I thought you were, you think there'd at least be one line that
- 3:45says, I thought you were dead.
- 3:47Maybe there is.
- 3:49I thought thoust was dead, said Jimmy, who's the apostle
- 3:54nobody ever talked about.
- 3:55Little Jimmy.
- 3:56Yeah, he didn't get the credit he deserved.
- 3:59He cooked most of the food, except for the body of Christ.
- 4:03Course only Jesus cooked the body of Christ.
- 4:06Usually they ate it raw.
- 4:08So anyway, that's what I've been thinking about this morning and this weekend.
- 4:15And um, I just got back from a yoga class and that feels like a good start.
- 4:22So here we go.
- 4:24Month two.
- 4:29I also made some new music.
- 4:34What's your overall opinion of Mexico City after what, five days here?
- 4:36I think it's all right.
- 4:37I wouldn't want to stay here.
- 4:39Oh, well.
- 4:40It's a little big.
- 4:41It is large.
- 4:42Yeah, it's a little crowded.
- 4:44Parts of it are very crowded, yeah, but parts of it aren't.
- 4:46Most of it's pretty crowded.
- 4:47You even think that the neighborhood you're staying
- 4:49in, Condesa, is, feels crowded?
- 4:51Just the way that, like, the, the traffic flows.
- 4:55Oh, there's a lot of traffic, yeah.
- 4:56Yeah, and that, that, to me, symbolizes crowded.
- 4:59Yeah, I wouldn't want to drive.
- 5:00No, not at all.
- 5:01No, we didn't try the subway.
- 5:03So that's true.
- 5:04It changed a lot of things actually because the subway I think in the middle
- 5:07of the day would have been just fine.
- 5:08Yeah, and that would have, um, but it's still a lot more crowded, you know,
- 5:12oh, yeah, it can be yeah, but I've never actually ridden the subway once.
- 5:15I think rather than the super long uber rides I think it
- 5:18might have actually been faster.
- 5:19That was fine.
- 5:20Yeah, I don't mind uber rides.
- 5:22But what was your favorite thing about your trip?
- 5:25I need to think you go first.
- 5:29That's the knife guy, by the way, you hear the whistle?
- 5:33He's riding a bike and he's got a knife sharpener.
- 5:34I saw, we saw a knife guy over by the tree.
- 5:38The museum the other day.
- 5:39It's the most random thing ever.
- 5:40Was that your favorite part of the trip?
- 5:42The knife guy?
- 5:42Uh huh.
- 5:43No, it really wasn't.
- 5:45Probably the cooking class.
- 5:46Oh, yeah.
- 5:47Yeah, that's true.
- 5:47I think that was probably my favorite.
- 5:49And, and the mariachi bands was fun, but it might not be my favorite.
- 5:52What was the mariachi band like?
- 5:54They were right up close, and it was very loud.
- 5:55We were at a restaurant.
- 5:56Yeah, we didn't get that much food, but.
- 5:58Well, you said you weren't hungry.
- 5:59Well, that's true.
- 6:00But then you ate lettuce one piece at a time for the entire time.
- 6:02Yeah, but the lettuce tasted really good though.
- 6:04Oh, he was?
- 6:05I didn't even see that.
- 6:05I ate all the lettuce.
- 6:07That's where it went.
- 6:20Thursday evening, and I'm feeling good.
- 6:24I just had my second Spanish lesson.
- 6:27And, after the first one that I had last week, I will be honest, I felt stupid.
- 6:36But this one, this second one, you know, I'd spent a lot of
- 6:38time studying over the week.
- 6:41And it went really well.
- 6:43It went really well, and I feel good.
- 6:45I feel like confident, and I feel like I'm gonna be able to learn this language.
- 6:50I mean, obviously not perfectly or at an incredibly high level right away,
- 6:54but yeah, and I really had a good week.
- 6:57My sister and my nephew were in town, and yeah, we had a really good time.
- 7:02Too much to really go into, to be honest, but one of the highlights I'll say
- 7:06was last night, when There's a square here, I think it's Girobaldi Square.
- 7:12There's all these mariachi bands in the square, and you can just
- 7:14go and rent one, if you want.
- 7:16Like, rent one for a weekend, take them home with you.
- 7:19I'm not entirely sure how that transaction works, because obviously
- 7:22I've never done it, but it's really quite something to see.
- 7:26And then there's a restaurant there.
- 7:27It's just an experience.
- 7:28There's just like four or five mariachi bands playing all the time, and I don't
- 7:35know, I feel like a lot of people, at least in the United States, who haven't
- 7:38been exposed to a lot of mariachi music, have a negative feeling about it.
- 7:42And maybe I had that feeling at a time as well, but I do not anymore.
- 7:47There's a real joy in mariachi music that you don't get in a lot of other music.
- 7:53A palpable feeling of joy.
- 7:54And I am all in for that.
- 7:58I don't understand a lot of what they're saying, of course.
- 8:00Not yet.
- 8:02But This restaurant, you know, they sat us at this table that was
- 8:06right in the middle of the action.
- 8:07So there's like a band playing right in front of us, like a eight
- 8:11to 10 person mariachi band playing right in front of our table for
- 8:15the entire time we were there.
- 8:16Like we had dinner and drinks and it was so much fun.
- 8:19Everybody loved it.
- 8:21And, uh, yeah, they played one song that was Somewhat inappropriate.
- 8:26And you learn the fuck your mother song at the, that I did.
- 8:30Yeah.
- 8:33we're gonna sing it on the 4th of July.
- 8:34Yeah.
- 8:35Yeah.
- 8:35And eat, uh, on the 250th anniversary.
- 8:38And only us and Rachel, Yvonne will know what we're talking about.
- 8:40Yeah.
- 8:40We're going to, we're gonna eat Mexican food and sing.
- 8:43We'll give, we'll say we're gonna on mariachi.
- 8:45We'll, we're mariachi Yvonne.
- 8:45We need a song sheet for this one.
- 8:47Right?
- 8:47Right.
- 8:47Can you give us a song sheet for Chinga two?
- 8:52He will be like, no, no, I cannot do that.
- 8:55. Rachel will be like, I'll get you one.
- 8:59. You know, Mia's in Spanish three or four or five already.
- 9:02I something I think.
- 9:03I think she wouldn't know yet.
- 9:04I don't know.
- 9:04I don't, that's, I don't think she's in Spanish five.
- 9:06I don't know.
- 9:07Think Spanish five is a class.
- 9:08Okay.
- 9:09What are you talking about?
- 9:09Somewhere?
- 9:10There's a class called Spanish five.
- 9:11Well, yeah, but it normally only goes up to like four.
- 9:13What are you talking about?
- 9:14Normally I can find many, many textbooks that are Spanish five.
- 9:19There's six and seven as well.
- 9:21Really?
- 9:22Yeah, it doesn't just stop at four.
- 9:24Yeah, but it's just like different levels.
- 9:26It's like one, two, three, four, and then one, two, three,
- 9:27four again, but just more.
- 9:29Why would you start go back to one again?
- 9:31Why wouldn't you just continue to go upwards?
- 9:34This is like Go on, Owen.
- 9:37Let's hear that.
- 9:38I need to gather my thoughts.
- 9:39Talk about something else.
- 9:39I get concerned about What about your schooling and your education
- 9:43when you say things like this?
- 9:44Don't distract him.
- 9:45I want to understand what the logic is here with 1, 2, 3, 4, and then
- 9:49back to 1 again if you pass 4.
- 9:50But no, but it's like a higher level of 1.
- 9:53Well number 2 is the higher level of 1.
- 9:56No, no, but it's like, it is 5, but it's just not called 5.
- 10:00There is Spanish 5, I promise.
- 10:02And 6 and 7 I would imagine as well.
- 10:04I'll show you pictures of the book.
- 10:05Huh, okay.
- 10:06Spanish level six.
- 10:07Yeah.
- 10:08Yeah, but it's level six.
- 10:10This is a class called Spanish six.
- 10:11I'm We'll look it up on the phone immediately when we stop this
- 10:18So that was great and then we went to this tower it's this very tall
- 10:22building by the Palais de Belle Arts It's one of the taller buildings
- 10:25in the city and you can go to the very top and there's like an outdoor
- 10:29observation deck and And It was amazing.
- 10:33It was beautiful.
- 10:34I'll put some photos and videos in the Patreon.
- 10:38But anyway, it felt like a really great way to end their trip and just
- 10:43a great day for me because earlier in that day we went to a Mexican
- 10:47cooking class that, it was incredible.
- 10:50What was so great about the cooking class?
- 10:51We cooked a lot and the food was really good.
- 10:54It was fun to learn about the food because we got, it was more than
- 10:57just the cooking, it was like the history and, and the, the history.
- 11:01Yeah, I forgot the chiles.
- 11:03Oh yeah, that was really good.
- 11:04That was really spicy though.
- 11:05Uh huh, some of it.
- 11:06Some of it was.
- 11:06It wasn't too spicy though.
- 11:07Well, some of them were pretty spicy.
- 11:08Some of them were pretty spicy.
- 11:09The habanero ones.
- 11:10Yeah.
- 11:11I liked making the tortillas.
- 11:13Yeah, that was fun.
- 11:14Yeah, even though I never made a perfect one.
- 11:16No, me neither.
- 11:16No, your first one, your first one was a disaster.
- 11:18Oh, well, yeah.
- 11:18Yeah, yeah, yeah, your first one.
- 11:20No, but you, you made some perfect ones because you had the better press than me.
- 11:24That's not why.
- 11:25That's very much why.
- 11:26It's not why.
- 11:27I made, every one I made was perfect even though my press was terrible.
- 11:30That's false.
- 11:31Yeah.
- 11:31Yeah.
- 11:32I thought making the salsa was interesting because every time I've made salsa it's
- 11:36been like just chopping up fresh tomatoes and fresh jalapenos and stuff and mixing
- 11:41it up in a bowl with a bunch of stuff.
- 11:42Yeah, that's not fair.
- 11:43That's not what happens at all.
- 11:44No, you're supposed to roast the tomatoes and then just squish it up.
- 11:47Yeah.
- 11:47Which is, yeah, we're gonna do that a lot easier than cutting it up too, frankly.
- 11:51Yeah, I bet you could do with some other things too, like with kiwi salsa.
- 11:55Oh, you guys, can you go ahead.
- 11:56Go crazy.
- 11:57That might be good.
- 11:58Be sweet.
- 11:58A sweet salsa.
- 11:59The toma Tomatillo.
- 11:59There's mango salsa, you know?
- 12:01Oh yeah.
- 12:01I've had mango salsa.
- 12:02Yeah.
- 12:02Good.
- 12:02That's very good.
- 12:03It's a mango.
- 12:03We get.
- 12:04It.
- 12:04Doesn't really taste like mango though.
- 12:05When we all go home for the 4th of July, we're going to make, for
- 12:08America's 250th anniversary, we're going to make a lot of Mexican food.
- 12:13So,
- 12:15it seems appropriate, right?
- 12:17Considering the political environment.
- 12:20And perhaps we'll hire a mariachi band as well.
- 12:22I don't know how much that costs in the Cleveland area, but if it's
- 12:24reasonably priced, if they can play patriotic music, I'm all in.
- 12:28We did a food tour where we just, one of these tacos we had was just like, they
- 12:34Roast it like cook it all day in this oil and then they like marinate the tortillas
- 12:38in the fat from the the meat And then you get the tortilla with the juice and
- 12:44the fat from the meat and then you get the meat and oh That was a good taco.
- 12:47Got me sick though Yeah, well, we don't know what got you
- 12:50sick something got you sick.
- 12:51Oh, yeah, and you couldn't poop for days died Yeah, tell us about the
- 12:54time you pooped It was magnificent.
- 12:57Was it?
- 12:57Even with the bidet, I clogged the toilet.
- 12:59It was Did you really?
- 13:00Oh, yeah.
- 13:01Was there a plunger?
- 13:02Yeah, it took me like three, three sessions.
- 13:05Oh, thank God I wasn't there.
- 13:07Yeah.
- 13:07That was the night I left him at home.
- 13:09I had a feeling.
- 13:09I was, I was a little worried.
- 13:11It was, it was bad.
- 13:12I thought it was never gonna go down.
- 13:14We're so similar.
- 13:15Um, I clogged the toilet this morning as a matter of fact.
- 13:17Uh, yeah, I've clogged toilets all over the world.
- 13:19I could do a whole episode just about that.
- 13:20I've gotten a bit better at not clogging toilets.
- 13:22How do you clog it with the bidet?
- 13:24I don't know.
- 13:25Have you pooped since?
- 13:26Uh, no.
- 13:27I'm not a very frequent pooper.
- 13:29Interesting.
- 13:30Actually, not at all.
- 13:31Huh.
- 13:31But when I need to poop, it happens.
- 13:33Well, I mean, that's Not when I, like, need to poop, but like,
- 13:37if there's a time where I should poop, it just sort of happens.
- 13:39What's the longest you think you've gone without pooping?
- 13:43I don't know.
- 13:44I want to say there was a time, maybe January last year or the year
- 13:48before, I might have gone maybe two weeks, and that was pretty rough.
- 13:53One time I was in Korea, I had to put my hand in a garbage bag, stick it
- 13:56in there, because I had no plunger.
- 13:59Yeah.
- 13:59So I just had to take it and start to take it on out of there.
- 14:05And we all, as well, got to watch the Orion spacecraft take take off in my
- 14:11apartment here in Mexico City, which felt like one of those memories that I'll
- 14:16kind of have with me forever, because it was a significant moment, you know?
- 14:19Space exploration moments are always pretty big, and we haven't
- 14:23gone to the moon in more than 50 years, so, I don't know.
- 14:27It was really, it was special to have my sister and my nephew
- 14:30here in my Mexico City apartment watching this momentous event.
- 14:34Oh, you went on the balloon ride, too.
- 14:35Oh, yeah, that was fun.
- 14:36It wasn't like As fun as I thought it was going to be.
- 14:39How, why did you think, how much fun did you think it was going to be?
- 14:41I mean, I thought it was gonna be cool, like you're way up in the sky.
- 14:43Right.
- 14:44Excitement.
- 14:45And what.
- 14:46It's just sort of like you're sitting there, you know.
- 14:48In your mind, what did you expect to be, expected to be?
- 14:51I thought it'd be more like, I guess, exhilarating would be the word.
- 14:55Oh, all right.
- 14:55Like, more like a, you know, like on a big zip line.
- 14:59We did that in Guatemala.
- 15:00Well, you've seen a balloon.
- 15:01When's the last time you, like, saw a balloon that was
- 15:03like, looked exhilarating?
- 15:05Never, but I don't really see hot air I don't really look at
- 15:07hot air balloons very often.
- 15:09I've never really seen one in person.
- 15:10Interesting.
- 15:11I mean, we were high above the ground on those zip lines.
- 15:14It's interesting that you're comparing an air balloon ride to a zip line.
- 15:17Well, I thought it'd be similar in excitement level to like a zip line.
- 15:21That's confusing.
- 15:22Because you're like way high in the air and you're like, Flying around.
- 15:25Right, I mean in that sense, why, is an airplane ride as exciting as a zipline?
- 15:29The similarity between a hot air balloon and a zipline is that you can sort
- 15:31of look around and see everything.
- 15:33You can look down and see everything.
- 15:34Interesting.
- 15:35But in an airplane, you only got that one window.
- 15:37Like, in a zipline, you know you're sort of just hanging
- 15:39out in the middle of nowhere.
- 15:40Next time you're here, we'll go do a zipline.
- 15:42They're the longest one in the world here somewhere in Mexico.
- 15:45Is it very long?
- 15:46It's four and a half hours long in one line.
- 15:48Well, yeah, all right.
- 15:49You have to bring lunch.
- 15:49You have to bring lunch and eat it while you're going.
- 15:51Yeah, yeah.
- 15:52Well, I'm glad you came to Mexico City.
- 15:54You should come by yourself, Owen, because then we could have some real fun.
- 15:56Oh, yeah.
- 15:57Yeah, go to all the What?
- 15:59Go to all the where?
- 16:01Gambling halls, of course.
- 16:02Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:03Gotta bet on the ponies again.
- 16:04He's not even old enough to rent a bike here.
- 16:06You can, you can gamble here at any age.
- 16:08Oh, okay.
- 16:09Yeah, yeah, anybody.
- 16:10All right.
- 16:10Maybe jet skis?
- 16:11You can rent the bikes.
- 16:12Jet skis.
- 16:13I don't know if there's anywhere to jet ski in Mexico City because the lake that
- 16:15it was built on is pretty much gone.
- 16:17Well, we could just like dig up part of the city.
- 16:19Okay, we'll do that.
- 16:20Any last things to say?
- 16:22Uh, God bless America.
- 16:24Wow.
- 16:24You have to Viva Mexico.
- 16:26Okay, that's better than what he was going to say.
- 16:30What were you going to say?
- 16:31I didn't say anything.
- 16:32What was I going to say?
- 16:33No, no, no, you have to say it now.
- 16:34Yeah, what did you think he was going to say?
- 16:35Yeah, you have to say it.
- 16:36Yeah, just the lyrics.
- 16:38Oh, oh, yeah.
- 16:39Yo chinga tu madre.
- 16:42Perfecto.
- 16:58Patricia invited me over a few weeks ago to her house to meet her sisters
- 17:03and her brother in law and their kids.
- 17:07And so, yeah, I went over and I had a great time.
- 17:10They're wonderful people.
- 17:11And, uh, at one point I was talking to the, her brother in law, um,
- 17:17whose name escapes me, but he is apparently a very big football fan.
- 17:23And when I mentioned to him that I'm from Cleveland, he was like, Oh, I'm so sorry.
- 17:29And I thought like, even in Mexico city, the Cleveland Browns reputation,
- 17:36It's, it's, it's still there.
- 17:38I, who knew how far that the reputation of the Browns went, but
- 17:42apparently it goes quite a ways.
- 17:44Oh!
- 17:45I finally threw my garbage away.
- 17:51I heard the bell.
- 17:53I looked out the window.
- 17:55I saw the garbage truck sitting about a block away.
- 17:58I grabbed my garbage.
- 17:59I walked down my stairs and I took that garbage right to that garbage
- 18:04truck Gave the guy ten pesos and he took my garbage and I felt like a
- 18:10king for about an hour Talked to an old friend of mine John tonight And
- 18:18I mean it was great to talk to him.
- 18:20It's always great to talk to him.
- 18:21He's a great guy One of the more wonderful humans I've had the
- 18:25pleasure of knowing in my 52 years.
- 18:27But, you know, I don't usually bring up the podcast to anybody because
- 18:31I feel like I don't want to be the guy with the podcast who talks
- 18:34about his podcast all the time.
- 18:36But he brought it up.
- 18:37So we talked about the podcast and, you know, we talked about
- 18:40episodes, different episodes.
- 18:42And I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that because I get so
- 18:46little feedback on this anymore.
- 18:48So When I first started the podcast, a lot of people were like giving me
- 18:51feedback because it was new and everybody was like, oh, yeah, I'd love that.
- 18:55But now that's died off.
- 18:57That died off months ago.
- 18:58And now it's just me continuing to pump out these episodes every week.
- 19:03And I just don't get a lot of email or, you know, I get some
- 19:07voicemails, which I really appreciate.
- 19:09And the emails that I do get, I really appreciate, but very few.
- 19:13So this is just to say that, like, if you are listening to this podcast
- 19:16consistently, or even now and again, or right now, this is the first time
- 19:20you've listened, it would mean a lot if you would just throw me an email
- 19:24at onefjefpod at gmail, just say, you can even just write, I'm listening.
- 19:28That'd be great.
- 19:29Because sometimes it feels like I am talking into the void here, you
- 19:33know, like I'm just talking to myself.
- 19:36And in a sense, I am talking to myself.
- 19:39And that's okay, because You know, we all talk to ourselves, whether it's in
- 19:43our head or out of our head, but my inner voice has always needed something to,
- 19:48has always wanted to be heard, I guess.
- 19:50My inner voice has always wanted to be heard.
- 19:53And this gives me a place to make it heard.
- 19:55But my inner voice is also one that is critical, self critical and full of
- 20:00doubt and full of insecurities and all the things that we all suffer from.
- 20:05And so it's hard for my inner voice to maintain a level of confidence.
- 20:10To continue to express myself, be earnest and so forth on this medium
- 20:18without any kind of feedback.
- 20:21So, John, thank you for that.
- 20:25And just for the conversation.
- 20:27When you do a move like this, it's really isolating.
- 20:31You know, it's isolating.
- 20:31Especially when you don't know the language.
- 20:33It's really isolating.
- 20:35And I took a walk tonight and I was thinking that maybe that's why
- 20:37I like Living in a foreign country where I'm a stranger, like, because
- 20:43like I've always been an outsider.
- 20:44I've talked about this on the podcast
- 20:49and maybe this living in a foreign country where I don't speak the
- 20:52language very well yet, um, allows me to continue to be an outsider.
- 20:57It's like my comfort zone, right?
- 21:00Which is weirdly ironic, considering all the talk I've released about
- 21:05getting out of one's comfort zone.
- 21:06Maybe this has been my.
- 21:09Maybe this whole move has been getting into my comfort zone.
- 21:14But it turns out my comfort zone is not all that comfortable.
- 21:16So, uh, maybe comfort zone isn't the right term for it.
- 21:22Perhaps happy place.
- 21:24Yeah, I like that better.
- 21:26Happy place.
- 21:27But I think there's some truth to it because, you know, I went and
- 21:31had dinner by myself at a, uh, at the movie theater down the street.
- 21:35And it was very crowded tonight.
- 21:37It's a Friday night.
- 21:38It was crowded.
- 21:39So I was sitting by myself at this table eating a pizza, and I couldn't understand
- 21:44anything, really, that anybody was saying.
- 21:46And I thought to myself, I thought, even if I wanted to be, like, friendly
- 21:50and interact with other people, like, it would go only so far.
- 21:53I mean, they probably speak English.
- 21:54Let's, you know, let's assume that they don't speak English,
- 21:57but it would only go so far.
- 22:03Although I did once have a extended conversation with two Ukrainian men on a
- 22:07park bench in Kiev years and years ago.
- 22:12Yeah, I was sitting on this park bench in Kiev, right on the Dnieper River,
- 22:17and, uh, There were these two Ukrainian guys sitting there, and I just tried
- 22:21to ask them what time the subway closed, because the subway closed at,
- 22:24I don't know, what time it was, 10 12.
- 22:26And I wanted to make sure that I got on it before I can get back, before I
- 22:30went to get a taxi back to the hotel.
- 22:32And we just struck up a conversation, but it was so broken English.
- 22:35Like, it was like drawing pictures, and we, you know, one of them kind of
- 22:38spoke English, the other one barely did.
- 22:41But like they invited me on their boat.
- 22:43They were sailors.
- 22:44I think they may have been gay, but there were sailors and
- 22:47they invited me on the boat.
- 22:48They gave me a tour of the boat.
- 22:49And we sat in the, um, unlike the bar slash dining hall or whatever of the boat.
- 22:57And I gave them a cassette of Bob Dylan that a friend had made for me
- 23:02and they put it into the sound system.
- 23:06And we sat there and drank vodka.
- 23:09For, I don't know, a couple of hours, like just shots of vodka
- 23:14and tried to talk to each other.
- 23:16And then at the end of the, you know, we got off the boat and the one dude
- 23:19gives me the shirt off his back.
- 23:21Gave me the shirt off his back.
- 23:23And I still have it.
- 23:24And when I was moving this recent time and I was like trying to get
- 23:27rid of things, like, that was one of the things I was like, I don't
- 23:29know if I can get rid of this.
- 23:31I've never worn it.
- 23:31It just wouldn't fit me.
- 23:33It was, you know, built like a sailor, this guy.
- 23:35I don't know.
- 23:36But I still have the shirt that the guy gave me off his back.
- 23:39It's called, it says like, Telavia Games on it.
- 23:41It's not a nice shirt.
- 23:42I mean, he probably didn't even want it.
- 23:43He was probably going to throw it away.
- 23:45But he's like, oh, I'll give it to this American guy.
- 23:47Anyway, I think that's all for this week.
- 23:49If I think of anything else to say, I will record it and add it.
- 23:52But yeah, I'm hungry now, so I have to get something to eat.
- 23:58But As always, thank you for listening.
- 24:00If you have any questions about Mexico City, about my experience, about, uh, any
- 24:05element of anything, you know, you can ask me about astrophysics if you want.
