Transcript
- 0:11Hello, friends, It's Sean. Here it is, Thursday.
- 0:14It's the 22nd of August and we are continuing to read through
- 0:19the book of First Corinthians well, this month and then we'll
- 0:24head into Second Corinthians. But boy, the emphasis is pretty
- 0:28strong in this book, isn't it? Paul is really trying to tell
- 0:31his friends and Corinth that it's not about them, it is about
- 0:35the body of Christ. It's about them coming together
- 0:39as a community to live this life of worship to their God through
- 0:44Jesus. And this is a great reminder for
- 0:47us today. And today is a wonderful
- 0:49reading. Today talks all about spiritual
- 0:52gifts that we are given and the way that we all take on
- 0:56different roles in God's family. So friend, if you think I'm a
- 1:01bit lost in my my spiritual community and I'm not quite sure
- 1:05where I fit, this reading is for you.
- 1:08This reading says God has made you just the way you are with
- 1:12all your special giftings and abilities so that no matter what
- 1:16you bring to the table, it is something of great value that is
- 1:19unique to you that your community needs.
- 1:22You are important in that community, and this reading
- 1:25really does flesh that out. So let's hear it, shall we?
- 1:28Let us dive in as we read together First Corinthians
- 1:33chapter 12. Now, dear brothers and sisters,
- 1:46regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit
- 1:50gives us, I don't want you to misunderstand this.
- 1:54You know that when you are still pagans, you were LED astray and
- 1:58swept along in worshipping speechless idols.
- 2:02So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of
- 2:07God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by
- 2:13the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of
- 2:16spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them
- 2:21all. There are different kinds of
- 2:24service, but we serve the same Lord.
- 2:27God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the
- 2:31work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to
- 2:36each of us so we can help each other.
- 2:40To one person the spirit gives the ability to give wise advice.
- 2:44To another. The same spirit gives a message
- 2:48of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great
- 2:51faith to another and to someone else.
- 2:54The one spirit gives the gift of healing.
- 2:58He gives one person the power to perform miracles and another the
- 3:02ability to prophecy. He gives someone else the
- 3:04ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of
- 3:07God or from another spirit. Still another person is given
- 3:12the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is
- 3:16given the ability to interpret what is being said.
- 3:20It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts.
- 3:24He alone decides which gift each person should have.
- 3:31The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one
- 3:35whole body. So it is with the body of
- 3:38Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are
- 3:41Gentiles, some are slaves and some are free.
- 3:45But we have all been baptised into one body by 1 Spirit, and
- 3:50we all share the same Spirit. Yes, the body has many different
- 3:55parts, not just one part. If the foot says I'm not a part
- 4:00of the body because I'm not a hand, that does not make it any
- 4:04less part of the body. And if the ear says I'm not part
- 4:08of the body because I'm not an eye, would that make it any less
- 4:13a part of the body? If the whole body were an eye,
- 4:17how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an
- 4:20ear, how would you smell anything?
- 4:23But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just
- 4:28where He wants it. How strange a body would be if
- 4:32it had only one part. Yes, there are many parts, but
- 4:36only one body. The eye can never say to the
- 4:40hand, I don't need you. The head can't say to the feet I
- 4:44don't need you. In fact, some parts of the body
- 4:49that seem weakest and least important are actually the most
- 4:54necessary, and the parts we regard as less honourable are
- 4:58those we clothe with the greatest care.
- 5:01So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen,
- 5:05while the more honourable parts do not require the special care.
- 5:10So God has put the body together such that extra honour and care
- 5:15are given to those parts that have less dignity.
- 5:18This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members
- 5:22care for each other. If one part suffers, all the
- 5:26parts suffer with it, and if one part is honoured, all the parts
- 5:31are glad. All of you together are Christ's
- 5:34body, and each of you is a part of it.
- 5:38There are some of the parts God has appointed for the church.
- 5:41First are apostles. Second are prophets.
- 5:44Third are teachers. Then those who do miracles,
- 5:49Those who have the gift of healing, Those who can help
- 5:52others, Those who have the gift of leadership, Those who speak
- 5:56in unknown languages. Are we all apostles?
- 6:01Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers?
- 6:05Do we all have the power to do miracles?
- 6:08Do we all have the gift of healing?
- 6:11Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages?
- 6:14Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages?
- 6:18Of course not. So you should earnestly desire
- 6:22the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of
- 6:28life that is best of all. Thank you, Jesus, that you place
- 6:44us in your body, Your body of believers here around us, where
- 6:49you give U.S. special giftings and abilities, and Your Spirit
- 6:54enables us to do things in a way that no one else can and that
- 6:59your body really needs. And Lord, as we hear this
- 7:03reading, we hear Paul talk about those parts of your body who
- 7:08require extra care and love. Holy Spirit of pray that you
- 7:14would open our eyes and our hearts, that we would see those
- 7:19corners within our communities where the people are that need
- 7:25our special attention and our love and our care.
- 7:29And that we would have hearts big enough to want to provide
- 7:34that care and that love. Even though you know that some
- 7:38people can be tricky to love sometimes.
- 7:41But this is your way. This is your way that you
- 7:44tantalisingly tease at the end of this chapter that we're going
- 7:47to come back to next week to hear about your way of love, our
- 7:52Transformers from the inside out, so that we can transform
- 7:56your communities, so that these communities can transform our
- 8:00world for you and your glory. Because you alone deserve our
- 8:08worship, our praise and our efforts.
- 8:12We love you, our mighty and wonderful God.
- 8:14And it's in Jesus name that we pray.
- 8:17Amen.
