Speaker 1: What's up UF fans.
• 0:01
Speaker 2: Thank you for joining us here on SEC football addiction.
• 0:04
Speaker 1: We are presented by prize picks.
• 0:06
Speaker 2: We're all new users who play a $ 5 lineup and win,
• 0:09
Speaker 2: get $ 150 in lineups instantly using our code HMA.
• 0:15
Speaker 1: There is a, I'll call it strange, maybe.
• 0:19
Speaker 2: Energy. It's very high stakes energy that surrounds Florida Gators
• 0:24
Speaker 2: football right now is The new season finally gets here.
• 0:28
Speaker 2: Thank God that there's football back and it's not just
• 0:31
Speaker 2: us talking about it. On one hand, there is a
• 0:34
Speaker 2: pretty genuine excitement that always comes with a fresh coach
• 0:38
Speaker 2: resetting things and a brand new clean slate. On the
• 0:43
Speaker 2: other hand, this program is carrying the weight of several
• 0:46
Speaker 2: exhausting years that have tested everyone's patience. Between the massive
• 0:51
Speaker 2: behind-the-scenes transitions and familiar faces that are trying to write
• 0:56
Speaker 2: their second acts elsewhere and also unprecedented off-field moves that
• 1:01
Speaker 2: are altering the look of game day itself, the entire
• 1:04
Speaker 2: operation is standing at a crossroads and we start to
• 1:07
Speaker 2: get our first answers tomorrow. Everyone wants to believe that
• 1:11
Speaker 2: this new foundation is built to last, but you guys
• 1:15
Speaker 2: know how thin the margin for error in this conference
• 1:19
Speaker 2: really is. Before the schedule gets relentless, there are major
• 1:24
Speaker 2: questions about where this team really stands and what this
• 1:28
Speaker 2: transition looks like behind closed doors. I've got a lot
• 1:32
Speaker 2: to talk about today, and it is almost game day,
• 1:35
Speaker 2: thank the Lord, so let's jump right into it. John
• 1:38
Speaker 2: Summerall walks out of the tunnel this Saturday, September 5th
• 1:41
Speaker 2: at 745 Eastern Time, and for the first time, he
• 1:44
Speaker 2: is the man Florida is following.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: The matchup against Florida Atlantic.
• 1:49
Speaker 2: Kicks off on the SEC Network, and the Gators enter
• 1:52
Speaker 2: as 27-point favorites. The crowd is projected to deliver the
• 1:57
Speaker 2: program's 19th consecutive sellout, which, after watching Florida football for
• 2:03
Speaker 2: the last few years, is a complete and utter hats-off
• 2:08
Speaker 2: moment to you guys. They're going to pack more than 88,000
• 2:12
Speaker 2: fans inside of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. There's a strange
• 2:16
Speaker 2: poetry in all of this because Summerall has stood inside
• 2:20
Speaker 2: of that stadium before, and he's never once walked away happy.
• 2:25
Speaker 2: As a visitor, he is 0-4 inside the swamp. He
• 2:29
Speaker 2: played linebacker for Kentucky in a loss. in 2002. He
• 2:33
Speaker 2: returned for another defeat in 2004. He was on that
• 2:37
Speaker 2: Kentucky sideline as a grad assistant when Florida won 26-7
• 2:41
Speaker 2: in 2006, and he was back on the Kentucky staff
• 2:45
Speaker 2: in 2020 watching the Gators secure a fourth victory against him.
• 2:50
Speaker 2: Reflecting on those visits, he recalled, he said, I remembered
• 2:54
Speaker 2: playing here in 2004 and how electric this venue is.
• 2:58
Speaker 2: He immediately turned that vivid memory into a direct challenge
• 3:01
Speaker 2: for this UF fan base. He said, when we play
• 3:04
Speaker 2: this Saturday night, there should not be an empty seat.
• 3:08
Speaker 2: He went on to add, if we want an elite-level program,
• 3:12
Speaker 2: which I think we all want, it takes everybody. Summerall
• 3:16
Speaker 2: is 44 years old. He was hired away by Florida
• 3:19
Speaker 2: from Tulane after compiling a 43-12 record with three conference
• 3:24
Speaker 2: championships across Troy and Tulane. He insists the magnitude of
• 3:29
Speaker 2: this stage will not shake his confidence. He said, I
• 3:32
  Speaker 2: don't get nervous. If I see a rattlesnake, I might
• 3:35
Speaker 2: get nervous, but I don't get nervous. I'm fired up
• 3:38
Speaker 2: to let our guys go out, cut loose, and play.
• 3:42
Speaker 2: If you spend any time around him or if you've
• 3:44
Speaker 2: consumed any of the multiple interviews he's done or anything
• 3:48
Speaker 2: you've seen from him this offseason, the one thing I
• 3:49
Speaker 2: can tell you about John Summerall is he seems incredibly
• 3:54
Speaker 2: genuine to me. I trust him when he speaks both
• 3:58
Speaker 2: on air and interacting with him in private settings. And
• 4:02
Speaker 2: I'm excited even as a rival to see what his
• 4:06
Speaker 2: tenure looks like, because he's the kind of guy that,
• 4:09
Speaker 2: you know, there's going to be bumps and bruises along
• 4:11
  Speaker 2: the way. I don't think anybody's projecting Florida as a
• 4:14
Speaker 2: 16 and O team that wins the national championship this year.
• 4:17
Speaker 2: And I'm excited to hear what his press conferences sound like,
• 4:21
Speaker 2: as opposed to the guy who used to put me
• 4:22
Speaker 2: to sleep last year and before.
• 4:25
Speaker 1: Something my kids can appreciate.
• 4:27
Speaker 2: His game day hype playlist leans heavily on ACDC and
• 4:32
Speaker 2: Chris Stapleton. Even in the buildup, he continually deflects the
• 4:37
Speaker 2: spotlight away from himself. He said, I'll be amped, but
• 4:42
Speaker 2: the day is not about me and it never will be.
• 4:45
Speaker 2: When it comes to his week one opponent, however, he
• 4:47
Speaker 2: was a little bit less relaxed. He said, I'd have
• 4:50
Speaker 2: been okay if we had a schedule against somebody that
• 4:53
Speaker 2: was a lesser talented team for week one. That candid
• 4:57
Speaker 2: admission makes sense because FAU is not a typical September warm-up.
• 5:02
Speaker 2: Under second-year head coach Zach Kittley, the Owls led the
• 5:05
Speaker 2: entire nation in passing with 340.2 yards per game last season,
• 5:11
Speaker 2: operating the fastest offense in all of college football. Quarterback
• 5:15
Speaker 2: Caden Veltkamp, a legitimate Maxwell Award candidate, threw for 3,641
• 5:18
Speaker 2: yards and had 24 touchdowns. He did throw 17 interceptions
• 5:25
Speaker 2: as well. His top target, Politnikov candidate Easton Messer, hauled
• 5:30
Speaker 2: in an incredible 104 receptions for over 1,000 yards. Summerall
• 5:35
Speaker 2: does hold fresh tape on this team, considering this Tulane
• 5:39
Speaker 2: squad from last year defeated FAU 35-24 back on November
• 5:42
Speaker 2: 15th of last season. Even so, his warning remained pretty blunt.
• 5:49
Speaker 2: You blinked and they're inside the red zone. Whatever the
• 5:52
Speaker 2: fastest there is, they're faster. Because of that rapid pace,
• 5:58
Speaker 2: his message to the locker room is deliberately simple.
• 6:01
Speaker 1: Go 1-0 this week.
• 6:04
Speaker 2: That narrow focus is critical for a roster carrying the
• 6:07
Speaker 2: weight of four losing seasons across the last five years,
• 6:11
Speaker 2: punctuated by a disappointing finish.
• 6:13
Speaker 1: Of 4-8 last year.
• 6:14
Speaker 2: Local outlet WRUF also raised a clear caution flag for
• 6:18
Speaker 2: anyone rushing to judge this team this Saturday, pointing out
• 6:23
Speaker 2: that SEC history shows opening week results rarely predict how
• 6:28
Speaker 2: a first-year coach's season actually ends. The true test for
• 6:32
Speaker 2: this Florida team will once again happen when they move
• 6:35
Speaker 2: past the first two weeks of the season. Yet the
• 6:38
Speaker 2: loudest question hanging over this roster has nothing to do
• 6:41
Speaker 2: with who runs out of that tunnel.
• 6:42
Speaker 1: It centers entirely on who will not be out there.
• 6:47
Speaker 2: Unfortunately, we are in a state of college football where
• 6:51
Speaker 2: the loudest stories are typically not the ones that have
• 6:53
Speaker 2: anything to do with the games. We've seen that in
• 6:55
Speaker 2: Baton Rouge and unfortunately in Gainesville, where there should be
• 6:58
Speaker 2: so much excitement around what is going on on Saturday,
• 7:02
Speaker 2: the most talked about player in Gainesville over the last
• 7:06
Speaker 2: couple of years. And certainly over the last week is
• 7:08
Speaker 2: now a thousand miles away. And the behind the scenes
• 7:12
Speaker 2: story of his departure is the piece of the story
• 7:14
Speaker 2: that almost nobody saw coming. Before I talk about that,
• 7:18
Speaker 2: I do want to give some love to our brand
• 7:19
Speaker 2: new show state of the state. You guys know Allie peak.
• 7:22
Speaker 2: I'm sure many of you are subscribed to her channel
• 7:24
Speaker 2: or familiar with her content. I'm doing a show with
• 7:26
Speaker 2: her and D money from Kane's insight. And it's really
• 7:29
Speaker 2: been a lot of fun. We're four weeks in, I
• 7:31
Speaker 2: look forward to the hour to hour and 15, hour
• 7:33
Speaker 2: and a half that we do every week. Allie will
• 7:35
Speaker 2: get to come on Sunday and do a victory lap.
• 7:38
Speaker 2: I'm asking you if you would. You don't have to
• 7:40
Speaker 2: do anything else. Make sure you go subscribe to that.
• 7:43
Speaker 2: We'd love to grow that channel and see that really
• 7:45
Speaker 2: balloon and kind of be a fun place where people
• 7:47
Speaker 2: can talk trashes. Miami certainly is the king of the state, unfortunately,
• 7:51
Speaker 2: for both you and I. Florida State's in the absolute gutter,
• 7:53
Speaker 2: and Florida's somewhere in the middle. Who starts to take steps?
• 7:57
Speaker 2: Who can catch Miami?
• 7:58
  Speaker 1: We'll see.
• 7:59
Speaker 2: But it's been a lot of fun to do it,
• 8:00
Speaker 2: and I'd ask you to go subscribe. Yahoo Sports' Ross
• 8:04
Speaker 2: Dellinger recently detailed the lowest point of DJ Lagway's tenure
• 8:08
Speaker 2: at Florida. It followed a painful five-interception performance during a
• 8:13
Speaker 2: 20-10 loss on the road at LSU.
• 8:15
Speaker 1: His mother, Nikita, rushed to Gainesville to.
• 8:17
Speaker 2: Find her son completely broken, describing him as depressed, angry,
• 8:21
Speaker 2: and crying on her shoulder. When she tried to reassure
• 8:24
Speaker 2: him that God's got you, he answered, Mama, I think
• 8:27
Speaker 2: God forgot about me. Her perspective on the fan base
• 8:30
Speaker 2: cuts straight to the core of the Billy Napier era.
• 8:34
Speaker 2: She said they thought about him as some kind of
• 8:36
Speaker 2: a savior, adding in that he's just a kid. The
• 8:39
Speaker 2: human element of that is real. I'll get to my
• 8:42
Speaker 2: point on Lagway in just a moment. He arrived, though,
• 8:45
Speaker 2: as the nation's No. 1 quarterback and No. 3 overall
• 8:48
Speaker 2: recruit in the 2024 class, sparking immediate whispers comparing him
• 8:52
Speaker 2: to Tim Tebow and Cam Newton. Instead, his 2025 campaign
• 8:57
Speaker 2: unraveled into an injury-riddled, mistake-filled ordeal. He explained on a
• 9:01
Speaker 2: podcast that his physical rehab dragged all the way from
• 9:04
Speaker 2: January to August, robbing him of an entire offseason to
• 9:08
Speaker 2: develop alongside his teammates. In an effort to regain his rhythm,
• 9:12
Speaker 2: he even brought his 7th grade trainer to Gainesville for
• 9:15
Speaker 2: 20 days just to feel like himself again. When Napier
• 9:19
Speaker 2: was fired, Lagway was left stranded in limbo. And once
• 9:22
Speaker 2: Summerall arrived, the schematic mismatch became undeniable as Lagway is
• 9:26
Speaker 2: a pro-style passer and the incoming system is an up-tempo spread.
• 9:30
Speaker 2: Seeing the mismatch, he entered the portal and CBS Sports
• 9:40
Speaker 2: subsequently reported a detail that caught many off guard. Lagway
• 9:43
Speaker 2: never really wanted to leave Florida, yet he was rarely
• 9:47
Speaker 2: a priority anywhere else. He eventually committed to Baylor. His
• 9:52
Speaker 2: father's alma mater located just two hours from home, reuniting
• 9:56
Speaker 2: with head coach Dave Aranda, who had recruited him in
• 9:58
Speaker 2: high school. He said, my dad always told me to
• 10:01
Speaker 2: go somewhere where you were wanted. I felt like here
• 10:06
Speaker 2: it was mutual love and respect both ways. I'm forever
• 10:09
Speaker 2: thankful for this place. Now, Aranda has said he was
• 10:13
Speaker 2: basically like F everybody. He was like F those who
• 10:16
Speaker 2: don't want to come to our games, F the media,
• 10:18
Speaker 2: F the people who don't want to be with us,
• 10:20
Speaker 2: F them all. Aranda pointed to that raw outburst as
• 10:24
Speaker 2: the turning point, marking the moment that Lagway finally opened
• 10:27
Speaker 2: up to his new coaches. I think DJ Lagway is
• 10:30
Speaker 2: an interesting case, and I don't know how much UF
• 10:32
Speaker 2: fans care, but it is a big moment this week
• 10:36
Speaker 2: that he's been highlighted.
• 10:38
Speaker 1: I think that Lagway ultimately... was asked to do too
• 10:42
Speaker 1: much under Billy Napier.
• 10:44
Speaker 2: I think there's an aspect, if I'm being real with you,
• 10:46
Speaker 2: not taking shots of UF and mostly its head coach
• 10:49
Speaker 2: and staff failing DJ Lagway. I also think that there's
• 10:54
Speaker 2: truth to the other side of the story too. From
• 10:57
Speaker 2: folks that I've spoken with close to the program, he
• 10:59
Speaker 2: was very much a loner. He didn't associate as much
• 11:01
Speaker 2: with his teammates. And I know they struggled. And I
• 11:04
Speaker 2: know that winning would have probably fixed a lot of things.
• 11:06
Speaker 2: But he just didn't seem to have the right mindset
• 11:09
Speaker 2: to come in and be the savior that Florida needed.
• 11:12
Speaker 1: He certainly didn't play like the savior they needed on
• 11:14
  Speaker 1: the field.
• 11:15
Speaker 2: What strikes me, though, is the PR team around him.
• 11:20
  Speaker 2: And that's where I'd spend just a moment, and we'll
• 11:22
Speaker 2: move on to something that's maybe a little more important
• 11:24
Speaker 2: and relevant to the Gators now. But I don't know
• 11:27
Speaker 2: why this story is coming out at this time. And
• 11:30
Speaker 2: I've got tremendous respect for Ross Dellinger. But there are
• 11:33
Speaker 2: certainly more pressing issues that are going on in college
• 11:36
Speaker 2: football than anything The way that a quarterback at Baylor
• 11:39
Speaker 2: felt about his previous stop. Most kids are in the
• 11:42
Speaker 2: transfer portal and then go to a new school because things.
• 11:45
  Speaker 1: Didn't work out.
• 11:45
Speaker 2: And no matter who the blame falls with. But for
• 11:48
Speaker 2: this to come out during game week and for DJ
• 11:51
Speaker 2: Lagway to be painted in this light, I think it
• 11:54
Speaker 2: doesn't paint him in a very good light. We know
• 11:57
Speaker 2: that Florida had problems. They fired their coach because of it.
• 12:00
Speaker 2: We know that Florida had issues. They now no longer
• 12:02
Speaker 2: employ the man that was responsible for them according to them.
• 12:06
Speaker 2: Coming out with this piece, to me, is a PR nightmare.
• 12:12
Speaker 2: It doesn't make Lagway look any better. It doesn't necessarily
• 12:15
Speaker 2: make Florida look any worse. I think Florida admitted that
• 12:18
Speaker 2: they had a problem at the top and moved on
• 12:20
Speaker 2: from it. And for this to come out just days
• 12:23
Speaker 2: before DJ Lagway will play Auburn, a quarterback that he'll
• 12:27
Speaker 2: see on the other sideline that beat him in the
• 12:29
Speaker 2: swamp last year, just feels off to me.
• 12:32
Speaker 1: But so did most of the DJ Lagway experience in Gainesville.
• 12:37
Speaker 2: However, though Florida lost its most famous player from the
• 12:40
Speaker 2: last two years, the program was quietly signing the biggest
• 12:43
Speaker 2: deal of its kind in college sports. And fans will
• 12:47
Speaker 2: see the proof of that the second the broadcast starts
• 12:49
Speaker 2: on Saturday night. Today, Friday, September 4th, Florida Athletics announced
• 12:53
Speaker 2: a multi-year partnership with Ripple that puts the XRP cryptocurrency
• 12:58
Speaker 2: logo directly onto the turf at Steve Spurrier Field. That
• 13:03
Speaker 2: on-field logo makes it officially and its debut is against FAU.
• 13:08
Speaker 2: The branding will sit prominently on each 25-yard line, complemented
• 13:12
Speaker 2: by further ripple signage across digital properties and event displays
• 13:15
Speaker 2: throughout Ben Hill Griffin.
• 13:17
Speaker 1: Here's the interesting part to me.
• 13:18
Speaker 2: Reporting from the Orlando Sentinel and Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellinger,
• 13:22
Speaker 2: who we just mentioned his article a moment ago, confirms
• 13:24
Speaker 2: the deal is worth roughly $ 5 million a year. It
• 13:27
Speaker 2: is believed to be the most lucrative field logo agreement
• 13:30
Speaker 2: in all of college sports. After the NCAA cleared the
• 13:34
Speaker 2: way for on-field advertising, Geico paid $ 1 million per game
• 13:38
Speaker 2: to put logos on the field for just Florida's final
• 13:41
Speaker 2: two home games against Tennessee and FSU. One year later,
• 13:45
Speaker 2: the annual revenue from that space is five times higher.
• 13:49
Speaker 2: AD Scott Strickland framed the agreement as a pretty natural fit.
• 13:52
Speaker 2: Florida has a long history of embracing innovation and technology.
• 13:56
Speaker 2: Ripple has established itself as an innovative leader in financial
• 14:00
Speaker 2: technology and and we're excited to welcome XRP to Gator Nation.
• 14:04
Speaker 1: The agreement is not merely a corporate check.
• 14:06
Speaker 2: Ripple will also fund financial and technology education programming for
• 14:10
Speaker 2: Florida student-athletes and the wider campus community, covering both traditional
• 14:14
Speaker 2: finance and digital assets.
• 14:17
Speaker 1: The timing behind this massive deal is no accident.
• 14:20
Speaker 2: Under the House settlement, universities can share about $ 20. 5 million
• 14:24
Speaker 2: per year directly with athletes.
• 14:26
Speaker 1: That started last July, a.
• 14:28
Speaker 2: Figure that climbs 4% every year through 2034 and 2035.
• 14:34
Speaker 2: In this landscape, sponsorship revenue is no longer extra money.
• 14:37
Speaker 2: It is survival money, and it turned into an arms
• 14:40
Speaker 2: race almost overnight. For fans watching at home, the practical
• 14:44
Speaker 2: upshot is pretty simple. The Swamp is going to look
• 14:46
Speaker 2: different on TV Saturday night as Florida plants its flag
• 14:49
Speaker 2: as the national leader in monetizing its playing surface. So
• 14:54
Speaker 2: the entire picture around Florida football this week is complete.
• 14:58
Speaker 2: You have a first-year head coach who is 0-4 in
• 15:01
  Speaker 2: your own building.
• 15:01
Speaker 1: As a visitor. You have a former No.
• 15:04
Speaker 2: 1 recruit rebuilding 1,000 miles away in a playing surface
• 15:08
Speaker 2: painted with crypto logos on the 25-yard lines. Every single
• 15:12
Speaker 2: piece points to the exact same unanswered question. After FAU
• 15:16
Speaker 2: and Campbell, the schedule stops being friendly. And that's when
• 15:19
Speaker 2: everyone finds out whether this new era that we've talked
• 15:22
Speaker 2: about with a new coach, a new quarterback, and new
• 15:25
Speaker 2: money is actually built to hold.
• 15:28
Speaker 1: We appreciate you guys for tuning in.
• 15:30
Speaker 2: I think Florida wins big, wins big on Saturday night,
• 15:33
Speaker 2: and really wins by as much as Summerall wants them to.
• 15:36
Speaker 2: We appreciate you guys a ton for tuning in. We
• 15:38
Speaker 2: appreciate our friends over at PrizePix. We're all new users
• 15:41
  Speaker 2: who play a $ 5 lineup, get $ 150 in lineups if
• 15:44
Speaker 2: they win using code HMA. We'll see you guys on
• 15:47
Speaker 2: the next one here on SEC Football Addiction.
