- 0:07The Los Angeles Rams faced the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round of the 1980 NFL playoffs at Texas Stadium on December 28, 1980.
- 0:16Los Angeles finished the regular season with an 11-5 record under coach Murray Malavesi,
- 0:22and were looking to make it back to the Super Bowl after losing to Terry Bradshaw's Steelers in 1979.
- 0:28Dallas finished with 12 wins in 1980 under coach Tom Landry, the first and only head coach that the Cowboys had in their 21 years.
- 0:36This audio recording is from the CBS Radio broadcast featuring announcers Jack Buck and Hank Stram.
- 0:43The blank corral will kick off from our right to our left to get the game started. James Jones is deep. He's averaged 22-plus per kickoff return. He is flanked by Timmy Wilson or Steve Wilson and Timmy Newsom.
- 0:59The loser of this game is eliminated and the winner goes on to play either next Saturday or next Sunday.
- 1:08The game is set to be played on Saturday, Saturday, and Saturday in Philadelphia or Sunday in Atlanta.
- 1:14Meanwhile, the Eagles and the Falcons and the other teams which are not involved in the NFC have the week off.
- 1:20Here's the kick at the line drive sort of kick. It bounces to Jones. He took it on the one. He's back to the five to the ten.
- 1:27To the 15, to the left, to the 20. To the 25 and a five goes down.
- 1:31It's a very silly, a fine special teams player for the Rams and we expect the clip to be called. In fact, there are two flags down on the field.
- 1:38It's a long clip for the flags to drop Jack. And as you mentioned, there's a clip on the play. The Dallas Cowboys will bring the ball back.
- 1:46The officials I should say will bring the ball back and they will not have nearly as good field position.
- 1:50We should point out Hank that in these games the officials are under very, very tough scrutiny by their supervisors and they're not going to let anybody get away with anything.
- 1:58No, there's no question about that. The only thing, you know, we've talked about it many times as coaches.
- 2:02Jack, you kind of wonder, you kind of wonder about the crews. They pick individual.
- 2:12Let's look into this.
- 2:14First of all, number 71 on the return. First down.
- 2:19They pick individual officials and make up a team for playoff games on merit instead of letting the same team play.
- 2:28In the playoff, sometimes Jack can make a big difference.
- 2:31Now the Cowboys on a toss to Dorsett trying to go left gets to the nine yard line and is tackled at the 10.
- 2:38The line of scrimmage was the nine yard line and so Dorsett.
- 2:43Ain't only a yard or two on the first play, a toss to the left side. There were two flips on the kick return and one of them occurred way back at the 18 yard line.
- 2:53They were penalized half the distance back to the nine. Dorsett just got two and it's second and eight from the Dallas 11 yard line.
- 3:00Drew Pearson comes to the right. Tony Hill, the wide receiver, to the left side.
- 3:06Saldy is the tight end and he is on the right side. Splitbacks. Now they shift into the eye with Newhouse the up back.
- 3:13And Danny White on second down on a delay and a busted play. Hands off to Newhouse. He's tackled immediately and it will be third down and eight.
- 3:21He ran into the arms of Fred Dreier and Jack Youngblood. Two very good defensive ends.
- 3:25Yes, they really got off the ball very well that time and I think you have to be very careful when you're playing a game like this one
- 3:30that you don't try to put in too many new things and fool yourself instead of fooling the opposition. You don't have to do them nearly as well.
- 3:38I don't know what happened on that last play but there was a mix up and they made a big mistake and now it's third and long.
- 3:44Jeff Delaney checks in as the extra back. Greg Westbrook or Joe Harris the extra linebacker.
- 3:50Dallas found their own 11 yard line. Third down and eight. Dupree sets up on the right side.
- 3:56Ships into the shotgun. He has Preston Pearson and now he calls time out.
- 4:02He calls time out so the Cowboys really appear to be confused here at the outset of the game.
- 4:0813-22 remaining in the first quarter. The Dallas Cowboys have third and eight from their own 11 yard line.
- 4:13They've called a time out with a score nothing nothing. Let us take time out.
- 4:18Sam, as your accountant, I'm advising you to do something about your office copy.
- 4:22What's wrong George? He's replacing them all the time. That's expensive Sam and peculiar.
- 4:27But my copying needs keep changing so I have to keep changing my copier. That's the way life is.
- 4:32You have to get a big expensive inflexible copier that's just as big, just as expensive and just as inflexible as your last big expensive inflexible copier.
- 4:40That's life. That isn't life.
- 4:42Sam, next time get a sharp 800 series plain paper copier with microprocessor technology.
- 4:47Oh?
- 4:48The paper copier, the high speed copier, the reduction copier, it doesn't matter. Sharp copiers are all flexible.
- 4:54As you need change, you don't go out and get another copier, you add options. You need automatic document feeding, you get an option.
- 5:01You need electronic cold waving, you get an option. You see? Flexible.
- 5:06Now I see what they mean when they say sharp people plan ahead.
- 5:09For more information call your local authorized sharp dealer or 800-447-4700. In Illinois call 800-322-4400.
- 5:17They're going to make Dallas from their own 11 yard line.
- 5:22Six defensive backs have checked in there, including Ivory Sully and Jeff Delaney.
- 5:28That Delaney has come to be quite a force for the Rams.
- 5:31Yeah, they like him very much. He's a very active guy and he's played his collegiate football at Pittsburgh.
- 5:36Six foot 195, good player.
- 5:39And now the Cowboys shift into the shotgun formation.
- 5:45Preston Pearson sets up with Danny White.
- 5:48He always seems to get loose in these pass patterns. Motion by Butts Johnson.
- 5:53White has protection over the middle. It is caught and then he didn't make the first down.
- 5:58Billy Joe Dupree caught it at the 18 yard line and about a yard short of a first down.
- 6:03The hit by Ivory Sully and it's punting time for the Cowboys.
- 6:07You know, that kind of a pattern really is kind of a meaningless one, Jack.
- 6:10You ought to be aware of how far you have to go to get the first down. That time it was a yard short.
- 6:16He certainly could have gone a yard deep.
- 6:18You ought to go about two or three yards deeper to make sure that when you make the catch, in case you get tackled, you still make the first down.
- 6:23He came up to get about a yard short.
- 6:25Danny White who averaged 40 yards, almost 41 for Jack, kicks it to Leroy Urban.
- 6:31Urban is standing at his 45. A good snap, a little pressure.
- 6:35He gets a driving kick away. Urban takes it on his 39 yard line, runs right, he gets to the 40, tries to come back the other way, breaks one tackle,
- 6:43dancing around and returned the ball only three yards out to the 42 yard line.
- 6:47A 46 yard punt, a three yard return, Bruce Hother downfield to make the tackle, and the Rams get the ball for the first time.
- 6:54And they're in much better shape than the Cowboys were when they got it.
- 6:57Yeah, field position turnover is going to be a very important part of this game, Jack.
- 7:00And of course the Cowboys start around their own nine, the Rams on their 42.
- 7:05And any time the important thing is that you take advantage of field position, it's going to be very important for the Los Angeles Rams to take advantage of this situation.
- 7:13Ed Jones is playing as a fast foot, but he is playing a left defensive end.
- 7:18Here the crowd rooting Cowboys on.
- 7:20Ferragamo is the quarterback and he has Gerald Thomas and Cullen Bryant in the backfield with him.
- 7:26Picks the tight end as a motion, a toss to Gerald Thomas trying to get outside, got one yard, that's all.
- 7:32Larry Cole pursued, made the hit, brought him down.
- 7:35And by the way, Cullen Bryant is starting. He's had the flu and he lost 10 pounds this week, but he is answering the call.
- 7:41You know, one thing about using some practice time this late in the season, the efficiency of the way you play will not make much of a difference.
- 7:49And the fact that you've been able to rest some sometimes can be a big factor and help you tremendously.
- 7:54The rest of this part of the season is more important than work.
- 7:57Preston Dinnard comes to the left.
- 8:00Extra Clingsdale checks in as the extra defensive back for the Cowboys.
- 8:05Billy Waddy is starting. Bryant goes in motion.
- 8:08Here's a toss to Thomas, cuts back, got to the 45.
- 8:12Two yard pick up, it'll be third down and seven for the Rams.
- 8:16Randy White and Larry Cole playing the inside.
- 8:19Where are the tacklers on the play? Funny thing, Hank, all these people who weren't going to start are starting.
- 8:23Yeah, they got well over on the way over on the butt.
- 8:26You know, Jack, I'm surprised with that good field position that they didn't try to throw the ball on first and 10 and try to be on the attack and make something happen.
- 8:34Sometimes, you know, you play these games and you play with the fear of losing rather than the anticipation of winning and they can be a problem.
- 8:41Waddy, Dinnard, and Drew Hill are the wide receivers, third and seven from their own 45.
- 8:46And Ferragamo is going to put it up for the first time.
- 8:49Short drop, throws long down the middle. Gerald Thomas can't get it.
- 8:53He intended it for the back. Gerald Thomas, but nothing happened.
- 8:58The pattern was there, but the ball was overthrown.
- 9:01Yeah, it was there perfectly. I think they confused Ferragamo a little bit.
- 9:04They came up on the line of scrimmage and created the impression that they were going to blitz and they backed off and the ball was snapped.
- 9:10He had Thomas open down the middle of the truth right over the top.
- 9:16And Jones is back to get the punt. He's averaged 10 yards per punt return.
- 9:20Frank Corral, who averaged almost 40 yards a kick, will get it away from his 35 and the Cowboys will get the ball for the second time.
- 9:28Eleven minutes left in the first quarter. No score. Low snap, a good bounce, and there's a kick by Corral.
- 9:33He did a good job. Jones takes it on the 15. He's to the 20 running right.
- 9:38There's an alley. He comes to the 25, 30, 35, 40. He's to the 45. He is to midfield. He's down to the 45.
- 9:46He's down and tackled at the 42 yard line of Los Angeles. A big return by James Goh.
- 9:5343, I return, and what a super play.
- 9:57Jeff Delaney made the tackle at the Ram 42 yard line.
- 10:02This crowd is wild and the Cowboys should be fired up. We have 10-44 left in the first quarter.
- 10:08A timeout on the field. What a score. The Cowboys, nothing in the Rams, nothing.
- 10:13Hi, I'm Joe McConnell. And I'm Walter Pagans.
- 10:17Instead of talking to your tow truck driver this winter, have a chat with your Chicagoland Buick dealer about the 1981 Skylark X.
- 10:24And you're going to like what he has to say.
- 10:26Oh, your Buick dealers are talking your language. We're talking what you want in a car.
- 10:32You want front wheel drive to handle those brutal Midwest winters?
- 10:36With the 1981 Skylark X, you've got it.
- 10:39So we match the way we're talking. We like to see you walk in.
- 10:45So you're your Buick dealer right now. Your Buick dealer's talking your language right now.
- 10:51Here's real music to your ears. Your Buick dealer has plenty of Skylarks on hand right now.
- 10:56Four doors, two doors, any color.
- 10:58Oh, your Buick dealers are talking your language.
- 11:01Besides Buick luxury and front wheel drive, well your Buick dealer tells you about Skylark's economy.
- 11:07The Buick gas mileage is no foreign language.
- 11:10Your Buick dealers are talking your language right now.
- 11:13I saw one Dallas player, Hank, who was very smart on that kick return.
- 11:20He could have thrown a block, which would have sprung Jones loose all the way to the left sideline.
- 11:24He might have gone all the way. But it would have had to have been a clip.
- 11:27So he just laid off and said, go get what you can, kid.
- 11:30Yeah, you always have to be aware. You have to be close enough to him where you can touch his shoe or touch the front of his jersey almost to make sure you don't make a clip.
- 11:39Let's see if they throw the ball on first and tenth.
- 11:41The ball is at the Ram 42 with new house and doors set.
- 11:44And on first down, Danny White with Dupree the tight end is back to throw.
- 11:48He throws long, going far off. He's got it man and incomplete in the end zone.
- 11:54Incomplete in the end zone to Drew Pearson.
- 11:58Chasing on the play was the rookie cornerback, Leroy Urban, filling in for Pat Thomas.
- 12:03And that's where they wanted to go.
- 12:05I'm very surprised that Tom Landry would try to take advantage of a young defensive back like that.
- 12:11That's right.
- 12:13But he might do it again.
- 12:15And again and again and again. Yeah.
- 12:17We have 10 38 left in the first quarter. No score.
- 12:20The Cowboys have the ball for the second time. There was a flag down on that play.
- 12:24And Pat Haggerty marks it off. A 10 yard penalty.
- 12:28Back to the Dallas 48.
- 12:32Holding number 61. First down.
- 12:39And a holding call against the Cowboys.
- 12:43And it's first down and 20.
- 12:45Well that would have broken the hearts of the Cowboy fans had that pass been complete in the end zone.
- 12:50It's first and 20 now.
- 12:52And White gives the ball to new house inside to the 50. Got only two.
- 12:57It'll be second and 18. He ran it to Larry Brooks.
- 13:00But up front the Rams are with Jack Youngblood, Cody Jones, Larry Brooks, Fred Dreier.
- 13:05And Jack Youngblood didn't make the Pro Bowl team, Hank.
- 13:08And that's a surprise. But when you look at the other people who did like Al Baker and Dan Hampton and the others who did make it, why then you can understand it.
- 13:18Yeah. And it was. Leroy Salmon's the other.
- 13:20Yeah. And of course Youngblood, it's hard to understand why he didn't make it because he's really a terrific player.
- 13:25And a dominant factor in this Rams defensive team is that.
- 13:28Second down and 18 from midfield for the Cowboys.
- 13:32They're wearing their white jerseys here this afternoon.
- 13:34Here is Wyatt on a give. The door set pops over the middle. Gets two. He's driven back.
- 13:39And it'll be third down and 16. He ran into the middle of the line.
- 13:43Joe Harris, the linebacker, had checked in.
- 13:45Jack Reynolds, the leading tackler on the Rams club, jammed it up.
- 13:49Third down and 16 for the Cowboys to bring in Preston Derson.
- 13:53The Rams, the Rams are third. They're a very, very fine disciplined team on defense.
- 13:58Third in total defense. Fourth against the run and second against the pass.
- 14:03Very, very strong. And of course on offense, the Rams are number one.
- 14:07Total offense, one rushing and eight passing.
- 14:09Butch Johnson is one of three wide receivers. Tony Hill and Drew Pearson are the others.
- 14:15Two free splits out. They're in the shotgun.
- 14:17And there's six defensive backs playing on the Rams.
- 14:20Motion and White back to throw. Has a lot of time. Looks, dumps it off short, incomplete.
- 14:25Incomplete at the Ram 45 yard line. He tried to get it to Drew Pearson coming back over the middle.
- 14:30The ball was under throw and the Rams will get it for the second time after this punt.
- 14:34Pearson was open coming across the middle, but Danny White threw the ball falling away.
- 14:39He was not set. He was not anchored well. He could have thrown it, had more time to do it, but hurried himself.
- 14:44And for that reason threw the ball poorly on the play.
- 14:47Leroy Irvin is back inside his 20, waiting for the kick from Danny White, his second of the day.
- 14:52The line of scrimmage is the Ram 49. We have 904 left in the first quarter, no score.
- 14:58White, you know, likes to run out of these situations if he gets no pressure, but the Rams come after him and darn near block it.
- 15:04There's a booming punt inside the 10, bounces inside the five, bounces straight up in the air and it's down at the one yard line by Anthony Dickerson, the linebacker.
- 15:14The Rams are way back at their one after a 47 yard punt by Danny White, high into the air and a terrific bounce straight up in the air.
- 15:238.55 left in the first quarter with a score of nothing, nothing but straight timeout.
- 15:28At 50 miles an hour, half of the average car's horsepower, and hence half of the average car owner's gasoline dollar, is spent doing nothing but pushing air out of the way.
- 15:41Kind of makes you want to cry, doesn't it? Well, cheer up, because we at Buick have been working on the problem, as witnessed by the 1981 Buick Regal.
- 15:51It's not only better looking, it's even more aerodynamic than last year's, and what that does for economy is quite rewarding.
- 15:58In fact, the new Regal offers an estimated MPG of 21 and 30 highway.
- 16:03Remember, use the estimated MPG of the 21 for comparison. The actual mileage you get may be different. Actual highway mileage will probably be less than the estimated highway fuel economy.
- 16:15See a Buick dealer about buying or leasing a new Regal, and let the air push somebody else around for a change.
- 16:22Thanks to AM, the early swing in this game is when the Rams failed to take advantage of the good field position they had at their own 42.
- 16:37The first time they got the ball, they did nothing, had to punt now their way back at their own one yard line.
- 16:42Well, the other thing that's amazing, too, the Dallas Cowboys had the ball in the first 42, and they couldn't do anything with it either.
- 16:48Now they have a defensive advantage because, of course, as you mentioned, the Rams have the ball in their own one yard line.
- 16:53I think it's a good situation right now on first and 10 in that position.
- 16:58Keep both back and try to ball, try to ball deep, try to lift any barns or let cornerback something strong downfield.
- 17:04There's a tight formation for the Rams with the tight end on the right side, motion by Waddy.
- 17:12Ferragamo hands off to Thomas, hit at the goal line, just did get back to the line of scrimmage.
- 17:18And the Dallas Cowboys with it, Jones making deep penetration, stop to play cold, no game.
- 17:24This broadcast is authorized under rights granted by the National Football League and is intended for the private use of our audience.
- 17:31Any rebroadcast or the use of this broadcast without the express, rich consent of the Dallas Cowboys is prohibited.
- 17:38Second down and 10 from their own one for the Rams.
- 17:42They might try to do something wrong here in this situation, although it looks like the Cowboys are going to be in the zone coverage.
- 17:48Here's the pass. Ferragamo from the end, Jones throws long down the middle into Waddy.
- 17:53And he couldn't get it. It kind of looked like he didn't see it, eh?
- 17:56Yeah, it looked like he lost it, but he had a chance at the ball.
- 17:59He would have gone all the way with that one, but he looked like he didn't see the ball at all.
- 18:03And the sun does sit through the open roof of this Texas Stadium.
- 18:07I'm sure that Waddy never did see the ball because Ferragamo is right on the money with it.
- 18:11Yeah, he threw it right down the middle. He brought it in motion and brought him inside and then right up the middle.
- 18:16Beautifully thrown ball, but evidently he just did definitely lost it in the sun.
- 18:22It is third down and 10 from the one.
- 18:26They'll have very little punting room if they fail to make any yardage.
- 18:30The extra back is in there. Extra cling scale for the Cowboys.
- 18:34Ferragamo back to throw again from the end zone as time steps up.
- 18:38Throws outside, it's open and incomplete.
- 18:40He tried to get it to Gennard. Gennard had run away from cling scale, but that pass was off target.
- 18:46And the Rams will have to punt from their end zone.
- 18:49I like their approach to that one yard line.
- 18:51They're going to run it out of there against the Dallas Cowboys as big and strong as they are.
- 18:55They made a good effort to get it out of there with a big play, and they could have had they connected on two passes where receivers were open.
- 19:02That ball was the first time thrown very well, and the receiver, Waddy, did not see it that time.
- 19:08He had another opportunity to make the play with Gennard, but the ball was thrown a little too far out in front.
- 19:13Very little room. Frank Corral is at the end line waiting for the snap from Dennis Harrah.
- 19:18He got a bad snap the last time and a good bounce.
- 19:21He gets a low snap this time and gets it away. Jones is out and takes it at the 40.
- 19:26Down to the 35, up the middle to the 30. Got all the yards he could. Down to the 25 of Los Angeles.
- 19:32And striking position for the Dallas Cowboys with 7.58 remaining in the quarter.
- 19:38A 37-yard punt, a 13-yard return. They don't score nothing. Nothing much to take down out.
- 19:44Here's some good news about interest rates from GMAC, the financing people from General Motors.
- 19:50Even though the bank prime rate has gone higher and higher,
- 19:53you should know that most auto financing rates don't automatically go up with the prime rate.
- 19:57And that simply means this.
- 19:59The new Chevy, Pontiac, Olds, Duik, or Cadillac you've had your eye on is probably a lot more affordable than you think.
- 20:06Your GM dealer has the GMAC financing you need to make sure you get that GM car you're after.
- 20:11Check it out at your GM dealer today.
- 20:15One of the greatest is taking a day off, but you didn't want to take off today.
- 20:20Terry Bregdaw seems strange out there.
- 20:23Yes, Jack. Strange, but at the same time I'm enjoying the game.
- 20:26And what do you think here in the early going? Anything surprising?
- 20:29Well, I'm in a good field position by Dallas. The kicking game has been excellent.
- 20:34The inability, I think, of LA to capitalize on the big plays they've had.
- 20:37The guys open and right now I think they're a little bit unstable and they're not hitting them.
- 20:41But the guys have been there. Just took the passive, but they just haven't delivered.
- 20:45What are your wintertime activities going to be now and summertime activities till July?
- 20:51Well, I'm going to do with my quarter horses, do a little farming.
- 20:54I got a couple of movies I'm going to be doing and that's just about it.
- 20:58I mainly am going to rest. I'm tired. I'm going to take some time and rest.
- 21:02Thanks, Tram. You can see the open receivers up here very easily.
- 21:05Isn't it great? I wish I had this down there.
- 21:07Thank you, Terry, for joining us. And happy new year.
- 21:09Thank you. Happy new year.
- 21:10Perry Bradshaw. Cowboys go from their own 25-yard line and a first down with Newhouse and Dorsett.
- 21:18They shift into the eye, two tight ends, Dupree and Southey straight ahead, Dorsett.
- 21:22He spins for five. He got six as he stretched out to the 19-yard line.
- 21:27The first significant gain from scrimmage, Nolan Cromwell came up and got him along with Rod Perry.
- 21:33These Rams are very good teams defensively, although they are without Pat Thomas, a Pro Bowl selection this year.
- 21:39I'm sure if we go along in this game, we'll see a lot of the receivers of the Dallas Cowboys going at the Leroy Irvin,
- 21:47the rookie left cornerback number 47 who is playing for the injured Pat Thomas.
- 21:52Just inside the Ram 20-yard line, it's second down and four for the Cowboys and Danny White.
- 21:59This is Newhouse and he has hit at the line of scrimmage and dives for two.
- 22:03It'll be third and two coming up for the Rams with seven-ten remaining in the first quarter, no score, clock running.
- 22:12Up front is Jack Youngblood, Cody Jones, Larry Brooks, Fred Dreier for the Rams, Jim Youngblood, Jack Reynolds, George Andrews are the linebackers.
- 22:20Leroy Irvin, Rod Perry on the corner, Nolan Cromwell and Johnny Johnson are the safety miss.
- 22:26Third and two. Might try to fill this ball, Hank.
- 22:30Yeah, they could. They could go possibly for a play-action pass, but the way they started this drive, I think they're going to try to run it.
- 22:36They have three tight ends in there, including Doug Cosby.
- 22:39It's third down and two and Newhouse tries for the first down and gets it.
- 22:43He's inside the 15 and tackled near the 13-yard line up Los Angeles.
- 22:48A little powerhouse at 5-10, 2-15, waited for the hole, popped in there and spun for extra yards.
- 22:54They evidently, I'm talking about the Dallas Cowboys, evidently feel they can run at the middle of the Rams defense, and specifically at Jack Reynolds, the middle linebacker.
- 23:03They've done a pretty good job of it. They've had to earn everything they've gotten, but they've kind of stayed with that principle by going right at the middle of the defense.
- 23:11And I'd be very surprised now if they don't throw a play-eye, this would be a good time for a play-eye comparison first.
- 23:16And that was the first, first down of the game. The ball's at the Los Angeles 13 and Ron Springs is in the backfield with Dorsett.
- 23:24Two tight ends, Saldy and Dupree, and it's Dorsett getting only to the 11-yard line.
- 23:30And he had to leave his feet to get that yardage. He picked up two. It'll be second down and eight.
- 23:35And they continue to run right at the middle.
- 23:38Any particular reason for that, Hank? They're running into a strong performer in Jack Reynolds, the middle linebacker.
- 23:44They're running into two fine, unheld attackers, including Jones and Larry Brooks.
- 23:49But evidently they feel they can trap him there and try to work inside.
- 23:54And then maybe as the game progresses, work to the outside. But right now, this is what they're featuring running inside.
- 24:00Robert Shaw is the center. It's second down and eight from the Los Angeles 11 for Dallas, motioned by Pearson.
- 24:07And white back to throw on second and eight. No pressure into the end zone and complete.
- 24:12He threw it just out of the reach of Dupree, who seems to think that he was held up in the end zone, hanging on him.
- 24:18But I don't think that literally was Johnny Johnson, the rookie out of Texas.
- 24:22They had a mismatch that time. They had Drew Pearson on Nolan Clomwell, who normally is the free safety, had him playing man for man on the outside.
- 24:31And it looked like Pearson had a chance to make a play on the outside, but he threw inside to Dupree.
- 24:36And of course the ball goes into place.
- 24:38Just looking at the overall angle, it would seem that something bothered Dupree because everything else seemed to be right for the Cowboys.
- 24:44They had pretty good coverage though, Jack. It wasn't like he was wide open.
- 24:47It's third down and eight. Preston Pearson is in and Danny White's in the shotgun.
- 24:51Third and eight from the 11. Bill is to the left side.
- 24:56And Pearson to the right. And back to throw is Danny White. Looking, looking, looking. Throwing end zone into the corner. Heavy coverage. Incomplete.
- 25:04The ball could not have been caught. There was some bumping down in the end zone, but the ball was thrown out of the end zone, so there was no play.
- 25:11I'll tell you something, Jack. You talk about good coverage on the play, on the pass pattern.
- 25:15They had everybody fated in good shape, and he had plenty of time to throw the football.
- 25:19Usually when you have that much time to throw the football, you ought to be able to find somebody, but he couldn't and wisely threw the ball out of the end zone.
- 25:26And it comes back and they're going to try field goal now on a fourth and eight situation.
- 25:30Well within the range of Rafael Septien, his longest of the year, with 52 yards. He kicked 11 out of 17.
- 25:37Charlie Waters will hold the ball at the 18. A 28-yard try by the right-footed soccer-style kicker, Rafael Septien, trying to get the first points of this playoff game with 4.58 left in the first quarter.
- 25:53The snap is good. Waters gets it down, and Septien kicks it through. The Dallas Cowboys favorites in this game.
- 26:01Go on top, 3-0 with 4.55 remaining in the first quarter.
- 26:08And the second game coming up this afternoon will also be here on CBS Radio with Lindsay Nelson and Jim Kelly, with Houston playing at Oakland in the AFC wild card game at 4.45 Eastern time.
- 26:20That should be just about the time we're through. It's a New Year's Day tradition, the cotton ball on CBS Radio.
- 26:25And again this year, Hank Stram and I will bring you the play-by-play color analysis as Southwest Conference Champion Baylor University tries to hold back the Crimson Tide of Alabama.
- 26:35The cotton ball on New Year's Day will be back down here in Dallas. Hear it here.
- 26:40So don't forget Lindsay Nelson's cotton ball preview. You'll also hear it here on CBS Radio. Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS Radio Network.
- 26:52WBBM Chicago News Report, Radio 78.
- 26:56Dallas Cowboys lead 3-0 on a field goal by Raphael Septier. Hank, I think we should point out again what a fine athlete that fellow is. He's not a one-dimensional athlete.
- 27:11No, he certainly isn't. And of course we drafted him when I was at New Orleans. He drafted in sixth. But he's a racquetball player, a tennis player, a very fine football player, of course a kicker. But he's got a lot of ability and skill and it's no surprise that he's doing as well as he is for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 27:26Drew Hill, who returned one kickoff this year, 98 yards, for a score awaits for the kick from Septier. It's high, it's short, and it's taken by Hill on the 10-yard line.
- 27:36He runs left to the 15, to the 20, to the 25, and he's holding out about at the 27-yard line. The Rams will go from there and the linebacker, Bill Rowe, a rookie downfield along with Steve Wilson, to make the, so the kickoff went to the Rams, 27.
- 27:52You know, one thing you have to be very careful of is the coaching staff and the team. When you beat a team like the Rams did the Cowboys several weeks ago, you go back the next time and maybe you change the package, the package of the game plan. You say, well, we did this against them the last time. They'll be looking for that, so we'll do this. And sometimes you fool yourself instead of doing what you did so well.
- 28:12Center, Ritz-Saul is over the ball. Ferragamo has Cullen Bryant, Gerald Thomas in the backfield in the eye formation.
- 28:22Here he goes, he goes in motion to the right side.
- 28:23In motion, he fakes to Thomas, a pass by Ferragamo, and it is caught by Dennard at the 45 for a first down. A first down, and he turned around and made a one-handed grab that was superb under the coverage of Aaron Mitchell.
- 28:35Aaron Mitchell was very deep, and again, the way the Dallas Cowboys play, normally you ought to be able to throw the ball in front of and inside of, providing you get the pass protection. There was a good illustration of the ball was thrown a little bit behind, but a beautiful catch there.
- 28:50And that's the first first down for the Rams. They're at their own 45 yard line. Fairling's three to nothing.
- 28:56Oh, what a catch by Dennard. He made it look easy. It goes in motion, Ferragamo's short drop, quick pass outside, caught by Dennard, and a pick-up of six yards on the play, and that's what you were looking for, eh?
- 29:07Yes, I think you have to take what they give you. You have to be patient. That's what they like to do, and you must throw in front of those defensive backs to get them up a little bit quicker and then go for the downfield for the big play.
- 29:18I know you like the offensive line of Los Angeles.
- 29:20Well, you know, the Ram offense is so big. Doug Francis, 270, Kent Hill is 260, Saul is 245, Herra is 255, and Crater is 271.
- 29:30Second down and four. They're in Dallas territory now at the 49. And here's Ferragamo giving the ball to Cullen Bryant. He moves to the 48 down near the 47.
- 29:42He's got two yards, and it's going to be third and two for the Rams. Bob Bruenig tackled him. By the way, Rich Saul, the center, Kent Hill, the left guard, and Dennis Herra, the right guard, are all members of the Pro Bowl team.
- 29:55That tells you how good they are up the middle offensively.
- 29:59And of course the fact that they're the leading rushing team in the NFC is a strong indication of the kind of ability and skill they have, especially so since they lost so many of their key runners.
- 30:10They put in Terry Nelson, the other tight end, along with Victor Hicks. They're in the high formation third and two.
- 30:17Here's a toss to the running back Thomas, gets the first down and more. Down to the 40 to the 39 of Dallas, and that fella can come off the ball.
- 30:25We saw him first make his mark in the Monday night game at New Orleans. And what with the Rams losing any hill, it was Peacock, Wendell Tyler. What a godsend he was to the Rams.
- 30:37And he's listed at 510, 223, and I think he's more like 510, 235, or 240, but he's a real snootball. He's tough.
- 30:45We're down to 305 left in the quarter.
- 30:48If they throw the ball again on first and 10, they've got to flex defense with two people off the line of scrimmage. It's a good time to throw against Dallas. Here they do.
- 30:55Here's Ferragamo back to throw over the middle, and a flag is down. The pass is caught at the 25, and the play goes down to the 20.
- 31:01And out of bounds goes Preston Dennard, will check the flag. I have no idea what this flag is. It didn't come from the ordinary holding spot.
- 31:11It was downfield. There probably was an illegal chuck or something of a sort. As it turned out, Dennard caught the ball.
- 31:19Unforced for my conduct, number 50 defense, hands to the face mask. Unforced for my conduct against the Dallas Cowboys, Edie Lewis, number 50.
- 31:32What'd he do, Hank? Did you see it? No, I really didn't. I surely didn't. I was looking at the defensive back, and again, as I mentioned earlier, he's playing so loose over there, so deep.
- 31:40If you ought to be able to do just what they're doing right now, throw in front of him. They're going to tighten up a little bit now, just close to the end zone.
- 31:46Oh, they smoked. Look where they put the ball, down inside the 10, and it burst and goes.
- 31:50Number 50, hands to the face mask, put down.
- 31:57Charlie Waters, the defensive captain of the Cowboys, appeals and wants an explanation. Pat Haggerty walks away from him.
- 32:03It's a burst and goal at the Dallas 10-yard line. The 251 remaining in the first quarter.
- 32:13Whoever made the call was very decisive about it. There's no question about that.
- 32:18Now, Ferragamo and company failing three to nothing have a burst and goal at the Dallas Panthers.
- 32:23In the eye, look at the middle. Get to the up-back, Cullen Bryan, and he moves down to the 7-yard line.
- 32:28Trying the middle again, and now a flag goes down as the play gets rough.
- 32:34It was well after the play was over. A flag was caused about 20 feet into the air to make sure that everybody saw it.
- 32:43And Pat Haggerty is being called by the umpire. What happened?
- 32:48And we have enforcement-like contact against Dallas again.
- 32:55This time against Bob Rooney, the middle-back.
- 33:01It's a surprise that that's happening because you have to have a lot of poise, good concentration, all the time.
- 33:06But especially in a big game like this one, you cannot afford to give yardage away as easily as the Cowboys did on the last couple of plays.
- 33:15It is second down and goal.
- 33:20It must have been offsetting penalties out there, right?
- 33:23Yeah, they didn't move the ball, did they?
- 33:25No, they didn't move the ball, so...
- 33:27Hicks will come in motion, probably. Here he comes.
- 33:29He's got the ball from the 7 for Agamow on a toss for Thomas.
- 33:32He gets down to the 5 and lunges to the 1-yard line.
- 33:35What a fine run by the running back Gerald Thomas.
- 33:38Tackled by Randy Hughes and it's third and goal from a foot away.
- 33:42He made an excellent move that time. The play was designed to go outside, but the end came up the field.
- 33:47He cut inside. Great vision, excellent balance, and got the ball down to about the half-yard line.
- 33:52He stumbled and almost went down at the 6.
- 33:54Yes, and he got the ball on the goal line. It looked like they might give him the touchdown, but they didn't.
- 33:59Third down and goal from about a foot away for the Rams, who trail by the score of 3 to nothing.
- 34:05And it's so important when you get an opportunity, you've got to come out of there with 7.
- 34:09You've got to think 7. You can't be thinking 3. You've got to think 7.
- 34:12They're in the eye with Bryant and Thomas.
- 34:14They give to Thomas, following Bryant's touchdown as he hurdles into the end zone.
- 34:18The Rams go on top with 1.54 left in the first quarter, helped out by the unsportsmanlike conduct call against the Cowboys and D.D. Lewis.
- 34:32So Gerald Thomas gets the score, and that is his third rushing touchdown of the year.
- 34:38Los Angeles on top, 6-3. Frank Corral will try the extra point. He kicked 51 out of 52 during the season.
- 34:481.54 remaining in the first quarter.
- 34:51Well, they did a good job of throwing the football that time, and that's what you have to do against Dallas.
- 34:57You have to throw it and throw it and throw it, and get past Dallas and get all the green.
- 35:01But the kick is blocked by the Dallas Cowboys. The kick is blocked. It was a slow pass from Dennis Herra.
- 35:08Brownwell put it down well, but the kickers, Corral, got there a little too quickly.
- 35:16Now the kick is blocked, and the score remains 6-3 with 1.54 remaining in the first quarter.
- 35:23As today in the ball game, the Sun Bowl, Nebraska defeated Mississippi State 31-17, Purdue over Missouri 28-25,
- 35:33and the Liberty Bowl, the All-Pane Bowl score was Arkansas 34 and Tulane 15.
- 35:381.54 left in the first quarter.
- 35:50I think the Los Angeles Rams realize on that drive that they have to go back to what they did the last time they played them.
- 36:01They did it once. There's no reason why you can't do it again.
- 36:04Their big, strong offensive line can contain the defensive line of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 36:08They ought to be able to throw the ball extremely well if they had the pass protection that they,
- 36:12as soon as we really would get, and they executed extremely well on that last drive.
- 36:17Hank, it was simply a face mask call against D.D. Lewis to put the ball down to the 10-yard line.
- 36:23Un-sportsmanlike conduct. Here's the kick by Corral. Jones waits deep, and he'll return it from the 3-yard line.
- 36:31Up the middle to the 10, to the 15, to the 20 running right, to the 25-yard line, to the 30-yard line, to the 35,
- 36:38and he is out of bounds at his own 36-yard line. Another 5-6 return by James Jones.
- 36:44Leroy Irvin tackled him, and it's a good thing for the Rams that he did.
- 36:49And a good thing, he really did a good job of using the straight arm on that last play.
- 36:53Did you notice? And he got the much to yardage to cover because of it.
- 36:57Out to the Dallas 35 with 1-42 remaining in the first quarter. Jones is piling up some kick return yards here.
- 37:05Drew Pearson goes to the left. Tony Hellers to the right side. Dutree is on the left side.
- 37:15And Danny White has new house and door set in the backfield from his own 35.
- 37:20Motion by Pearson. Here's the gift to Dorsett running outside left.
- 37:24He moves out to the 40, to the 45, to midfield, out to the 45, and he is out of bounds at the Rams 41-yard line.
- 37:32A big run by Tony Dorsett. He is happy.
- 37:36Holds his fist still off to get out the back to the line of 7. Johnny Johnson bumps him out of bounds.
- 37:41A big run by Tony Dorsett. 23 yards.
- 37:47You know, Andrew is the right linebacker. He was in a good position. Nobody blocked him.
- 37:51It looked like he was in a good position to make the play, Jack, but he just didn't make the play.
- 37:56And of course, Dorsett ran right around the outside of him like he wasn't there and went down the sideline for a big game.
- 38:01Oh, he can motor and he has a little change of pace when he sees that area opening up. He can turn it on.
- 38:08And of course, the other thing great about Dorsett is he's a great daylight runner.
- 38:11In other words, whenever he sees a little seam from running room, he really puts it in overdrive.
- 38:16From the Rams 42, Dorsett tries it again and cuts back and gets to the 40. He picked up 2 yards.
- 38:20We have a minute and a half left in the quarter. The Rams are leading by the score of 6 to 3.
- 38:25And the clock is running.
- 38:28Andrew has done a good job that time, number 52, the right linebacker.
- 38:31They evidently feel they can do some good running on that side.
- 38:35I think basically people feel that you can run. If you're going to run against the Rams, you're going to run at the right end, dryer, and also at Andrews.
- 38:42And this is what they're doing. And of course, they did a pretty good job in the first play.
- 38:45And of course, it used to be Bob Wodzinski over there at that spot for their hands, but he left the football team.
- 38:51And George Andrews out of Nebraska is starting. It's second down and eight from the Los Angeles 40.
- 38:56A minute remaining in the quarter. Rams lead 6-3. And Danny White is back to throw.
- 39:02He's chased from behind. He gets the block. That helps. He throws over the middle.
- 39:06And it is incomplete at the 20-yard line and what a big hit.
- 39:10A big hit by Cromwell and the intended pass receiver getting up there as slowly as Tony Hill.
- 39:17Tony Hill looked like he had possession, but Cromwell really gave him a great shot, a great hit, jarred the ball loose,
- 39:24and it looks like something might have happened to him physically on the play talking about Tony Hill.
- 39:29That stops the clock with 42 seconds remaining in the first quarter, and it's going to be third and eighth for the Cowboys from the Los Angeles 40.
- 39:37White is only one out of five for seven yards. Farragamo three out of six, 44 yards.
- 39:43So Danny White starting off a bit slowly.
- 39:46You know, surprisingly so because they really haven't had much of a rush on him at all.
- 39:49He's had all kinds of time to fill the football, but hasn't thrown it very well.
- 39:54Dave Southey becomes a wide receiver now to the right side with Pearson.
- 39:57Butch Johnson is the third wide receiver. Preston Pearson is in there.
- 40:03And here is White on third and eighth. Back to throws, steps up into the pocket, throws, incomplete at the 30.
- 40:10Incomplete, he tried to get the ball to Preston Pearson.
- 40:13Throwing a little bit behind him, but Pearson ordinarily will catch that ball.
- 40:16Covered by Lucius Smith, fourth down, punting time.
- 40:20And now we have a penalty flag down.
- 40:24And it may be roughing the passer.
- 40:27It looks like it is against the Rams.
- 40:31Roughing the passer against the Rams. That's an automatic first down and a major penalty of 15 yards.
- 40:37Down to the Los Angeles 25 yard line.
- 40:43First down, roughing the passer, number 51, first down.
- 40:49So instead of punting the ball, the Cowboys have it at the Los Angeles 25 with 37 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
- 40:57And the Rams leading six to three.
- 41:00Randy Hughes of the Cowboys has a dislocated shoulder. He will not be back.
- 41:06So they have lost both starting free safeties, Dennis Thurman and Randy Hughes, when the Cowboys are on defense.
- 41:14First down at the 25 yard line.
- 41:16They like to play action pass in this situation. I'll be surprised if they don't do that on this particular play.
- 41:22Tony Hill still not back in there. Butch Johnson the wide receiver.
- 41:26And on first down, White's going to throw straight back, looks, throws long into the end zone.
- 41:31It's open and it's complete.
- 41:33Every coverage but no play.
- 41:36Coverage by the rookie Johnny Johnson on DuBridge.
- 41:41Well it wasn't a play action pass, but it was a pocket pass and he was going to the play.
- 41:46And the young rookie safety man Johnson really did a good job of coverage on the play.
- 41:51You know you talk about play action.
- 41:53One fake handoff that safety man may take the one step up for the line of scrimmage that would do him in on a play like that.
- 42:00That's exactly right. You're hoping for him to take a little sniff of what you give him from a play action standpoint and hope to be able to throw on top of him, beyond him.
- 42:08But they elected that time to throw from the pocket, which is something that they don't do nearly as much as throw play action pass.
- 42:14Thirty-one seconds left in the first quarter. Rams leading six-three, second and ten Dallas at the Los Angeles 25.
- 42:20And he whites a new house trying to get up the middle and brought down for a loss of a yard on the play.
- 42:25And he was tackled by Joe Harris, the linebacker who just happened to pick that slot to penetrate.
- 42:32We talk about a guessing game. That's what it's all about.
- 42:34He gets right, you're in good shape, he gets wrong, you're in trouble.
- 42:37He gets right on the defensive call that time.
- 42:39I'm surprised they don't go after Leroy Irvin more.
- 42:42They did it early and had him licked.
- 42:44The defensive time to go after him is on first down, talking about the Dallas Cowboys going over at Leroy Irvin, the young defensive back.
- 42:52It'll be third down and eleven from the Los Angeles 26 for the Dallas Cowboys when we resume.
- 42:58That's the end of the first quarter with a score. The Rams six and the Cowboys three.
- 43:06Hi, this is Drew Piracy.
- 43:07You know a long time before I played wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys,
- 43:11I was the first quarterback for my high school team in South River, New Jersey.
- 43:14Being a high school football star was great. It was still tough being a teenager.
- 43:18I had to make some big decisions for myself, directing a college, planning my career, and even making a choice about drinking.
- 43:25Alcohol abuse is a real problem today.
- 43:27That's why it's so important for parents to help their teenagers with straight talk about alcohol.
- 43:32Like pro athletes, teenagers need good coaching, especially with big decisions.
- 43:36Having the right information when your teenager needs it can mean a difference between being a winner and not making the grade.
- 43:42That is a free booklet called Straight Talk About Alcohol that can help you help your teenager make the right decision.
- 43:49For your free copy, write Education Commission of the State, Box 687 Denver, Colorado, 80201.
- 43:56Send for your copy today and help your teenager be a winner for life.
- 44:01The preceding message on behalf of the Dispilled Spirits Council of the United States,
- 44:08furnished by the National Football League.
- 44:10We start the second quarter. Danny White is one out of five, seven yards.
- 44:14Ferragamo three out of six, 44 yards.
- 44:17First down, Dallas two, Los Angeles three.
- 44:20Rushing, Dallas 47, Los Angeles 23.
- 44:23Three penalties against the Cowboys and it cost them.
- 44:26One against the Rams. Each team is punted twice.
- 44:29And it's third down and 11 for the Cowboys.
- 44:33They're at the Los Angeles 26 yard line later today, also on CBS Radio Houston at Oakland.
- 44:39And then 20 of action next Saturday and Sunday, a total of four games.
- 44:44When the likes of the Eagles and the Falcons and the Browns and Buffalo, Minnesota will be in action.
- 44:55The Dallas Cowboys win this game.
- 44:57They will be playing at Atlanta a week from today.
- 45:02If Los Angeles wins this game, they'll be playing at Philadelphia next Saturday.
- 45:07All of the action on CBS Radio.
- 45:10Let's see what the Cowboys can come up with here.
- 45:13Tony Hill is back in there. He was injured earlier.
- 45:17He comes out and splits left.
- 45:19Cowboys are in the shotgun formation.
- 45:21They're inciting man for man coverage and it looks like they might try to throw the ball to a back, I would think, on one of those defensive backs.
- 45:28White's back to throw. A little pressure. Now he's rushed.
- 45:31And he provides the rush. Steps up and throws. It's wide open.
- 45:34Up by Fowley for a foul at the 10 yard line of Los Angeles.
- 45:39Guy Johnson tackles it.
- 45:41But you can thank Danny White for his ability to avoid the rush for that completed pass.
- 45:46By the way, the referee, Pat Haggerty, showed a good delivery straight and he didn't blow the play dead.
- 45:51Well, he had no reason to at that time. He didn't really get a good shot at the quarterback and Danny White.
- 45:55He showed a lot of poise and a lot of quick feet there to get out of the traffic and throw the ball like he did to the outside.
- 46:04But J. Saldy was wide open, but he was open only because they were so concerned about trying to get to Danny White.
- 46:09It is not first and goal. The ball is just outside the 10 and it's first and 10.
- 46:15They're trying to run up the middle.
- 46:17They have Springs in there with Dorsett. They give us the Dorsett.
- 46:22And he got only about a yard, maybe a half a yard.
- 46:27And Cromwell, the safety man, was gambling on the play and ran right into him along with Larry Brooks.
- 46:33And it's second down and nine.
- 46:37They really haven't succeeded in making a lot of yardage up the middle, but they continue to try.
- 46:41They did it again that time and only made a yard on that forward pass.
- 46:45They're keeping him at home, Hank. I don't know if they're trying to set something up.
- 46:49Well, there's a time to get him out of the house somewhere along the line. He can't keep it home all day.
- 46:54Tony Hill is to the left along with Drew Pearson.
- 46:58And it's second down and nine. Danny White's going to put it up. He's chased out of the pocket.
- 47:02Dorsett is wide open. He throws inside the 10 and it is caught at the seven yard line.
- 47:08The tackle made him Italy on Dorsett. Coming up was Johnny Johnson again.
- 47:12And White might have waited a little too long before he threw.
- 47:15Yeah, Dorsett was out there all by himself. But by the time he saw him, he drew some other folks.
- 47:20But he still was able to make the catch.
- 47:24It's going to be third down and six. The ball is at the seven of Los Angeles.
- 47:29We have 13 minutes left in the half. The Rams are leading six to three.
- 47:34The defensive play on the field on the part of both sides is quite stout, isn't it?
- 47:38Yes, it definitely is. They're excellent.
- 47:42Third down and seven. They're just outside the seven yard line.
- 47:47They're going to bump it in the outside.
- 47:50And down! Incomplete! To Tony Hill. Great position by Rod Perry. Incomplete.
- 47:56They were in a bump and run. And any time you see that in that position of the field, they're going to try to go up on top.
- 48:01He didn't throw it quite far enough on the outside that time, Jack. And he thrown it farther to the outside.
- 48:07It would have been an opportunity for him to make the catch, but he didn't. And for that reason, the ball is incomplete.
- 48:12Rafael Septien, who kicked a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter, will try his second field goal of the day.
- 48:21All 43 left in the half.
- 48:23I'm surprised that he would challenge Rod Perry instead of not going to the other side to Leeward Urban on the play.
- 48:28Leeward Urban is playing in place of Pat Thomas, who is injured.
- 48:32A pro ball cornerback.
- 48:34They have Nolan Cromwell, Pat Thomas, and Rod Perry out of their defensive secondary, all in the pro ball for the Rams.
- 48:42This will be from the 16, so it's a 26-yard tie with Charlie Waters holding.
- 48:50Now the whistle stops play. They're down to the 32nd.
- 48:54They're down on the 32nd clock and a whistle sounds and a delay of game against the Cowboys.
- 48:59That will make it a 31-yard try.
- 49:02Hank, even when that pass was incomplete and it became fourth down, they hesitated for a long time on the Cowboy sideline before sending the field goal unit on the field.
- 49:12Yeah, evidently they were deliberating a little bit about whether they should go for it or not, and decided against that and went to decide to go for the field goal.
- 49:20Now the line of scrimmage is the 12, making it fourth and 11.
- 49:23I don't know how many different ways you can kick a field goal, why there should be that much indecision on the play.
- 49:28Sepien kicked one through from 28 yards earlier, and now this one will be held at the 20 by Charlie Waters.
- 49:36It'll be a 30-yard try.
- 49:39We'll wait for the snap.
- 49:45Everything quiet. The snap is good. Waters gets it down. Sepien kicks it through.
- 49:50And they have a tie game with 12-40 remaining in the half.
- 49:55A ram touchdown and a block extra point to Dallas Field Goals, and with the score tied 6-6, let's take time out.
- 50:24We'll be right back.
- 50:55This Bud's for you.
- 50:58Anne Heiser Bush, St. Louis.
- 51:02Thanks, fam. I hope this good weather prevails Thursday, New Year's Day, when we're back down here for the cotton ball game.
- 51:08Just so it doesn't turn out to be like it did several years ago when the Notre Dame and Houston played.
- 51:13It's very, very cold. It'll be a baler in Alabama here on CBS Radio on New Year's Day.
- 51:18The game kicking off, and Drew Hill is the deepest for the Rams. 12-40 left in the half, score tied 6-6.
- 51:25Nothing determined at this point as to who will be eliminated this afternoon.
- 51:35Here is the kick from Sepien. It's a boomer.
- 51:39High and deep and into the end zone, and Drew Hill says no thanks. It'll come off to the 20-yard line.
- 51:46Folks, Wynn Elliott is hard at work right now preparing a Super Bowl special.
- 51:53You'll be anxious to hear. A 20-part series capturing the excitement of NFL season past and present.
- 51:59Here it is, Super Bowl weekend, January 24th and 25th, with Wynn Elliott on CBS Radio.
- 52:07Dennis Thurman is in there at the free safety spot, with Randy Hughes out now with a shoulder separation.
- 52:14Vince Thuracamo has Nelson, his tight end, in motion, and he is back to throw.
- 52:23He sets up, has time, throws long over the middle, and it's caught at the 40 to the 45, and now a pummel.
- 52:28It's recovered, and it's kicked, and it goes out of bounds.
- 52:31And let's see who gets it as it belongs to the Rams at the 34, because the pass receiver was the last man to have possession of the ball.
- 52:42There again, Jack, there again was a great illustration of a player having an opportunity to just fall on the ball, and it would be Dallas ball, their possession.
- 52:53Instead, he did not fall on it and get this team in trouble by not making a play on the pummeled ball.
- 53:00Preston Denard caught the ball, so he was the last to have possession.
- 53:03He pummeled it cleanly, just popped out of his arms. The Cowboys had it, lost it, pumped it out of bounds at the Dallas 34.
- 53:10Aaron Mitchell had a chance to make the recovery.
- 53:13The ball is at the Dallas 34, and a first down for the Rams.
- 53:17Here is a delay to Cullen Bryant running right. He loses from the arc, and Randy White really dumped him, and then a flag went down.
- 53:25He's headed off to Cullen Bryant. He will drop on the line by Randy White.
- 53:30I think against Dallas, and I've mentioned it so many times, I think you have to throw, throw, throw, and then run in between, Jack.
- 53:34You cannot worry too much about your running offense against this team. I think you have to throw the ball.
- 53:39You have to run enough to keep him honest, but you have to throw the ball consistently.
- 53:42Holding against the Rams, the ball was at the 34.
- 53:46These holding penalties are seldom refused. It will be marched back to the 44.
- 53:55And it will be first down and 20.
- 53:59Holding against the Rams.
- 54:0812-18 left in the half.
- 54:16Having trouble with hearing the announcement from Pat Haggerty.
- 54:21Now the Cowboys go into their pass defense. They take out Brunig. They take out John Dutton.
- 54:27They take out Pee Dee Will.
- 54:30And the Rams have a long way to go. They're at the Dallas 44 with a first down.
- 54:36They stay on the ground with Cullen Bryan. It opens up inside the 40, down to the 35-yard line, and he got nine yards.
- 54:43And the Rams won against the Tendency and picked up a quick nine.
- 54:46It's really a good play because they're expecting you to throw the football.
- 54:49They've got their defensive backs in the game with the hope and expectation that you're going to throw the ball if you run it and block it properly while you're blocking against defensive backs instead of linebackers.
- 54:57And you ought to be able to make yardies.
- 54:59Bryan picked up nine and it's second down and 11.
- 55:03Mr. Klinkstale was the tackler. He's the rookie out of South Carolina State.
- 55:08Charlie Waters goes off the field for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 55:11Second down and 11.
- 55:13Back to the middle.
- 55:14And it is caught inside the 25-yard line.
- 55:18With a strong reception by Terry Nelson, the tight end.
- 55:21Many barns hanging out of it but couldn't stop him.
- 55:24And it's a first down for Los Angeles inside the Dallas 25.
- 55:28The middle was very open which was very obvious on the play and the important thing is that we, you know, it's not that we saw it up here.
- 55:33The important thing is the quarterback sees it quickly enough and he did and he's got a terrifically well, good release.
- 55:38Got rid of the ball quickly right in the middle area and picked up a nice game and a play.
- 55:42To the Dallas 23-yard line.
- 55:44Charlie Waters is back in there for Dallas.
- 55:46He's an integral part of their defense.
- 55:48Here is Ferragamo on the ground to Cullen Bryan.
- 55:51He moves down to the 21.
- 55:54And he was able to get two yards.
- 55:56Waters and John Dutton were the tacklers.
- 55:59That was a strong pass reception by Terry Nelson.
- 56:03He's been in and out of the Ram lineup with a recurring groin injury.
- 56:06He's caught only three passes before today.
- 56:08When the tight end releases from the line of scrimmage and sees that the safety men are deep or going in opposite directions, he's got to look for the ball quickly.
- 56:14He did that time and the coordination between the quarterback and the tight end was excellent.
- 56:18Waddy, despite a hip pointer, is playing.
- 56:20He's wide with Dinnard.
- 56:21Second and eighth.
- 56:22Ferragamo is going to pass.
- 56:24Good protection.
- 56:25He's hit.
- 56:26Now he throws it in the end zone and incomplete.
- 56:28And Ferragamo really took a wallop by conflicting Charlie Waters.
- 56:34Waters was really coming after him and Ferragamo just didn't get rid of it.
- 56:39And that was the back side.
- 56:43And that's what you don't like to have happen to you as a quarterback.
- 56:47You're looking intently downfield.
- 56:49You're trying to hit somebody in the slack to the right side.
- 56:52Never saw Waters coming and really took a shot in the back.
- 56:54Ferragamo is five out of nine for 86 yards.
- 56:58The ball is at the Dallas 21-yard line.
- 57:02Third down and eighth for the Rams.
- 57:04They're tied 6-6 here with 10-21 left in the air.
- 57:08Boy, look at that middle again.
- 57:11Ferragamo drops the throw, throws long into the left corner.
- 57:15Touchdown for Los Angeles.
- 57:17On the money to Preston Dinnard.
- 57:19No flags and the Rams go on top.
- 57:22He beat Aaron Mitchell on the corner.
- 57:24He certainly did and Aaron Mitchell fell on the play.
- 57:27Fell on the play and for that reason he was open, talking about Dinnard.
- 57:33But they've got a lot of ability, a lot of skill.
- 57:35And again, that time the pass protection was very, very fine.
- 57:40Ferragamo laid it right in the arms of Preston Dinnard who caught his seventh touchdown pass of the year.
- 57:47And as Hank called it for you, Aaron Mitchell hit the deck as he was trying to cover and Dinnard ran by him.
- 57:55The extra point drive by Corral was blocked earlier.
- 57:59Another little snap.
- 58:01Crammo gets it down.
- 58:02The kick is good.
- 58:03And the Rams have a seven-point lead with 10-17 remaining in the half.
- 58:09The Rams have never been behind and now they lead by seven points.
- 58:12We'll be back with a Los Angeles kickoff in just a moment.
- 58:15You know there's nothing more aggravating than having trouble trying to start your car on a cold winter day.
- 58:24The fault starts, it stops, and stalls.
- 58:30Well, heat fuel system dryer and antifreeze eliminates all that nonsense.
- 58:35Get your car ready for winter.
- 58:37Use heat to take out moisture caused by the hot, humid weather of this past summer.
- 58:42Heat eliminates moisture caused cross and sputters right now.
- 58:46Just add heat to your gas tank.
- 58:48It ensures quick start and smooth, trouble-free engine performance even on those icy below zero days.
- 58:55So buy protection right now.
- 58:57Buy a supply of heat fuel system dryer and antifreeze.
- 59:00A small investment for a driver's peace of mind.
- 59:03It's sold everywhere.
- 59:05Just look for the distinctive yellow bottle with the long, easy-to-pour neck.
- 59:08Heat, H-E-E-T.
- 59:11Ghost dog, buy heat.
- 59:16Los Angeles Rams overcame a holding penalty to go in for that score that,
- 59:20that running play Hank on first and 20 that picked up nine yards really helped them along the way, didn't it?
- 59:25Well that's always a fun thing. You know you have to run when they expect you to throw and throw when they expect you to run.
- 59:29And that's exactly what they did. They anticipated pass evidently.
- 59:32They ran the play up the middle with Colin Bryant. He picked up nine and they got a big chunk.
- 59:36And the big thing is you don't want to try to get it all back on one play.
- 59:39They were, they had 20 yards to go. They got nine of it back and then from there it went on in good shape.
- 59:43The kick by Corral coming up to get it is Jones.
- 59:47He took it on the seven. He's to the ten running right to the 20.
- 59:50He's out to the 25 and did not get to the 30.
- 59:53Tackle at his own 29. He's had some fine kick returns.
- 59:56And Joe Harris, the Ram linebacker, made the tackle with 10.08 remaining in the half.
- 1:00:01Los Angeles leading 13 to 6.
- 1:00:06Kickoff to the Dallas 29.
- 1:00:10What do you expect from the Cowboys here Hank?
- 1:00:12Has their approach been any different than you thought it would be?
- 1:00:15I'm surprised they're trying. They're spending so much time trying to run up the middle.
- 1:00:18That's really the surprising thing to me so far in the game.
- 1:00:20They concentrated a lot of their energy running up the middle.
- 1:00:23They haven't made a lot of yardage but they continue to try.
- 1:00:25Let's see if they continue to do it here.
- 1:00:27Doss is in at the defensive end spot for the Rams.
- 1:00:31Springs is in the backfield and here is White back to throw.
- 1:00:34And he throws the screen and it is caught by Dorsett to the 35 to the 40.
- 1:00:39He has the first down out to his own 44.
- 1:00:41He bobbled the ball, held on, got the blocks that he needed.
- 1:00:44Johnson and Comwell was hasting in.
- 1:00:46Finally stopped the play at the Dallas 44.
- 1:00:48They run that screen very well.
- 1:00:50Yeah, there's an off-the-play action fake.
- 1:00:52They faked to him and threw back.
- 1:00:54They faked to him and threw back to the opposite side, to the left side, to 20 Dorsett.
- 1:01:00He makes the catch and he was very close to his line at that time.
- 1:01:03Anytime you're that close, sometimes it's very hard for the quarterback to locate the running back or the receiver.
- 1:01:09But he didn't in that particular case and they succeeded in making a first down.
- 1:01:13White a first down pass from his own 44 over the middle and knocked down.
- 1:01:17A brilliant defensive play was made by the Rams and Johnny Johnson out of Texas, the rookie.
- 1:01:22They really like him.
- 1:01:24Very easy to understand why they like him.
- 1:01:26I talked to Kosserman recently and they asked for a grade on him on his defensive backs.
- 1:01:31He gave him a grade of 4.5, 5 being the best.
- 1:01:35And he's 4.5 they think at this stage of his career, which is really amazing for a defensive back and especially a rookie.
- 1:01:419.22 left in the half.
- 1:01:43The Rams are leading 13 to 6, second and $10 from their own 44.
- 1:01:48Here is White with a toss to Dorsett.
- 1:01:50It's open to the 45 to the 50.
- 1:01:52He is out of bounds and he did not get a first down.
- 1:01:55Here's Cheyenne with a first down by about a yard.
- 1:01:58And that was a second down play.
- 1:02:00It will be third and one for Dallas at the 47 yard line of Los Angeles.
- 1:02:05Jim Youngblood, the linebacker, got him out.
- 1:02:07The important thing, the reason that play was successful that time, Jack, was because they went on a quick count.
- 1:02:12The Rams were still moving trying to adjust to the formation and while they were doing that,
- 1:02:16they snapped the ball and they got around the outside before the defensive linebackers,
- 1:02:21the linebackers I should say, were able to recover and make a play on the outside.
- 1:02:26Now they measure to see if he made a first down. He is indeed less than a yard short
- 1:02:30and will be third down and one at the Los Angeles 47.
- 1:02:34And Seasons greeting strongmen and women around the world listening on American Forces Radio.
- 1:02:39And a Happy New Year to all from CBS.
- 1:02:429.16 left in the half.
- 1:02:46Cowboys started from their own 29. They had a screen to Dorsett, a run by Dorsett.
- 1:02:51They're into Rams territory at the 46, third one.
- 1:02:56Will they play it straight here or hank or go for a quick six?
- 1:03:01I would think, I would think that they would run the ball for the first down.
- 1:03:06I would think that's what Landry's going to do. Maybe in this game he might change, but I think probably he'll try to run the ball.
- 1:03:10They have Springs and Dorsett in the backfield.
- 1:03:13Rams are tough against the run and here's a quarterback sneaking a first down.
- 1:03:17Danny White went to the 45 of Los Angeles for a first down.
- 1:03:22White is 6'2", 192.
- 1:03:26Daniel is able to force his way behind Robert Shaw who's starting in place to go on Fitzgerald.
- 1:03:31Pat Dunovan and Jim Cooper are the tackles. Herb Scott and Tom Rafferty are the guards.
- 1:03:36I haven't been able to watch it Hank, but I suspect that Cooper's been doing a good job against Jack Younglook.
- 1:03:41Yeah, I think he has. I think he has been doing a good job.
- 1:03:44And Shaw at 6'4", 245 and played his collegiate football at Tennessee.
- 1:03:48This would be a good time for a, well I thought maybe they were going to throw.
- 1:03:50Here's the toss the ball and he's going to throw.
- 1:03:52He sets up and now runs.
- 1:03:54Then he is down to the 42 yard line and he picks up two, maybe three yards.
- 1:03:58Good coverage downfield. In fact they had double coverage on the man to whom he wanted to throw, Tony Hill.
- 1:04:03Cromwell was there, helped out by Rod Perry.
- 1:04:07He kind of had the feeling as soon as he got the pitch from the outside that he was going to try to throw the ball, the defensive backs recovered.
- 1:04:12And read it very, very well.
- 1:04:14And Tony Hill had no chance whatsoever downfield.
- 1:04:17And Dorsett wisely kept the ball and tried to get the most out of the play as he possibly could.
- 1:04:22Coming up on the eighth minute mark remaining in the half,
- 1:04:24Los Angeles is on top in this NFC wild card playoff game 13 to 6.
- 1:04:29And it is second down and seventh from Moran, 42 for the Cowboys.
- 1:04:34I'm surprised they haven't gone after Herb and more than they have.
- 1:04:37They haven't done that except from the first time.
- 1:04:39Here they go.
- 1:04:42By good care, Samantha, 23 for a first down right in front of your man, eh?
- 1:04:47Yeah, I was surprised they haven't done more of that.
- 1:04:49I don't know why they don't continue to do more of it.
- 1:04:51They did it twice in a game. They had him licked on a big play early and threw it over the top.
- 1:04:56This is only the second time they've thrown her in front of him, but I think you've got to challenge him and throw the ball at him as much as you possibly can.
- 1:05:02This is an official's timeout.
- 1:05:03The Cowboys have just picked up a first down at the Los Angeles 23 with 729 left in the half.
- 1:05:11And now they start the clock again.
- 1:05:13First down at the Los Angeles 23.
- 1:05:15White's picking it up a little bit. He's six out of 13.
- 1:05:23715 remaining in the half.
- 1:05:27Out come the Cowboys. The crowd comes alive.
- 1:05:31Saldy sets up his wing back to the left, springs in the backfield with Newhouse.
- 1:05:36This is a big time for a play I can pass.
- 1:05:38Down he goes in motion and here's Doris Set popping it up the middle.
- 1:05:41He's down inside the 15-yard line for a first down through the 11th. The ball came loose.
- 1:05:46And it belongs to...it belongs to Dallas. The play was whistled in.
- 1:05:52And it is a first down.
- 1:05:57Doris Set. Blue down to the 12-yard line. It is a first down to the Los Angeles crowd.
- 1:06:03The ball came loose and the play was whistled in.
- 1:06:05A kind of thing that the motion by Saldy confused the Rams and it was wide open up the middle.
- 1:06:09Well the thing they did that time, they played with a double tight end offense that time to make sure that the linebacker was on the line of scrimmage instead of off.
- 1:06:15They did a good job of blocking him. They got a seam and Doris Set did a good job on a delayed draw play from rollout action.
- 1:06:22First down at the 12-yard line.
- 1:06:26Pearson is to the right. Springs is in the backfield with Doris Set.
- 1:06:29First down at the Rams 12. It's 25 left in the half clock running.
- 1:06:33Rams leading 13 to 6 and on first down White gives the ball to Doris Set. A good block by Springs.
- 1:06:39He scores! He's in the end zone from 12 yards out.
- 1:06:43Rams win 7.
- 1:06:46Well they did a good job of blocking at the point of attack.
- 1:06:49The right tackle, Cooper, the right guard, Rafferty, the tight end beat 3.
- 1:06:54They all did a super job of knocking him off the line of scrimmage.
- 1:06:57It was a seam. Anytime you give Doris Set a seam, as I told you a minute ago, Jack, he sees running room.
- 1:07:02Boy, he really puts it in high gear. He did it that time and went right into the end zone.
- 1:07:06Unmolested for the touchdown.
- 1:07:08Warmwell, the safety man, was uptight at the line of scrimmage and Doris Set simply outran him.
- 1:07:14And now with Waters holding, set the end.
- 1:07:17Who's missed only one all year will try to tie it up.
- 1:07:21We wait for the snap. There's been some low snaps. This one was high. The kick is good.
- 1:07:26We have a tie game.
- 1:07:2913-0 with 6-6-8 remaining in the half.
- 1:07:32And with a score, Los Angeles 13 and Dallas 13, let's take time out.
- 1:07:37Here's how to talk your chauffeur into the idea of Buick's little limousine.
- 1:07:42The 1981 Century Savant. First, point out the Buick quality.
- 1:07:47Next, show him the elegantly appointed interior. Then point out the trim, intelligent lines, and V6 engine.
- 1:07:53If he argues that limousines are supposed to be large and expensive and the Century is neither,
- 1:07:58tell him when he starts making the payments that he can pick out the car.
- 1:08:02Wouldn't you be pleased by the power of Buick?
- 1:08:07This is Larry Zaca. In 13 years of pro football, I've seen some pretty tough guys up close.
- 1:08:13But I've never seen anything tougher on fuel bills than Whirlpool tight-fifth gas furnace.
- 1:08:17It's an induced draft gas furnace engineered by Whirlpool to meet the high cost of energy.
- 1:08:22So if you want to get tough with your fuel bills, get a tight-fifth gas furnace from Whirlpool.
- 1:08:27Take it from a guy who knows this is one tough furnace.
- 1:08:31So check your yellow pages for the Whirlpool gas furnace dealer near a fuse.
- 1:08:3871 yards, 8 plays for the Cowboys. Tony Dorsett, a big part of the drive.
- 1:08:43They took the kickoff at their 29 and screened to Dorsett to the 44.
- 1:08:47And then Dorsett ran to the 40, the pass to Pearson, set it up.
- 1:08:50Dorsett ran to the 12 and then took it in.
- 1:08:53We have a tie game, 13-all with 6-16 left in the half.
- 1:08:57Drew Hill is back to take the kick from Septian, who boomed it into the end zone his last time.
- 1:09:02Raphael kicks the ball high. It will be returned. And it is taken by one of the wingmen at the 10 to the 15
- 1:09:09and to the 20 and out to the 25 yard line. And a flag goes down as Lucius Smith returned to the 25.
- 1:09:16A flag is down. It's probably a clip.
- 1:09:20And Rans will be backed up. A clip against Los Angeles.
- 1:09:25Nasty crowd here. They're roaring.
- 1:09:28They sold more than 24,000 tickets the last couple of days of this week.
- 1:09:34Had a big sale two days ago of 12,000 in order to bring about the sellout.
- 1:09:41The ball's marked at the Ram tent.
- 1:09:45Crystal foul, 15-75 on the return for Sound.
- 1:09:54Three penalties against Los Angeles now, four against the Cowboys.
- 1:09:58Rans are way back at their 10 yard line with 6-07 left in the half and the score tied.
- 1:10:0413-all, Billy Waddy is wide to the left.
- 1:10:08Preston Dinnard is a wing to the left and now he comes in motion.
- 1:10:13And on first down, here's Ferricamo giving the ball to Thomas. Thomas cuts back and he is hit.
- 1:10:18And he got only a yard and a half.
- 1:10:21Well that's one factor in this game which hasn't become evident.
- 1:10:26That is the running of Gerald Thomas.
- 1:10:28And you can understand that against the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:10:31Well, here again, I think you can run against Dallas if you establish the pass early in this area of the field.
- 1:10:38You know, you're going to try to run the ball and try to get some yardage and get it out of there.
- 1:10:41That time Harvey Martin did a good job.
- 1:10:43But you can't miss. It's harder to run outside of Martin.
- 1:10:45Easier to run inside of him than it is outside.
- 1:10:47Here's a toss to Cullen Bryant trying to get outside. He's out to the 15, to the 18 yard line.
- 1:10:52And it will be third down and two for the Rams.
- 1:10:55Dallas up front as Jones, Cole, White and Martin.
- 1:10:59Or Dutton. Jones, Dutton, White and Martin.
- 1:11:03And the tackle on that trip was made by Dee Dee Lewis, the linebacker.
- 1:11:07Third and a yard and a half for the Rams at their own 18.
- 1:11:11And Martin that time got off his block very well and got a piece of the tackle that also helped him to play.
- 1:11:16We have five minutes left and a half.
- 1:11:22Cowboys fans know if they stop him here they'll get the ball and a punt.
- 1:11:25It's third down the yard and a half.
- 1:11:27And Ferragamo is going to pass.
- 1:11:30He looks, he looks, he looks, he looks, he looks.
- 1:11:32He throws long and the tight end can't get it.
- 1:11:35Walled Arnold was out there inside the Dallas 45.
- 1:11:38He just didn't have the speed to run under it.
- 1:11:40They called the right play and it would have worked.
- 1:11:43But the pass was overthrown just a drop.
- 1:11:45He had a chance to hit the receiver downfield.
- 1:11:48But Victor Hicks is the guy that was open on the play, number 81.
- 1:11:51He should have been satisfied just to get the first down.
- 1:11:53Hicks was open. He looked downfield, had plenty of time to throw the ball, threw it way over the top.
- 1:11:58But the guy that was open and should have thrown the ball to was Victor Hicks.
- 1:12:01He either made the yardage for the first down.
- 1:12:03Frank Corral will punt. He'll take the snap at his five and James Jones is back to get it.
- 1:12:07Dallas should be in good shape.
- 1:12:09Jones stands inside his 45 to get it with 4.43 left in the half scored tie.
- 1:12:13A good snap from center.
- 1:12:15The kick by Corral is not too hot.
- 1:12:17And Jones takes it on the 44, runs right, gets to midfield, turns the corner a little bit.
- 1:12:21He's down to the 45. He's down to the 40 yard line and out of bounds.
- 1:12:25He is out of bounds with the Los Angeles 40.
- 1:12:27A first down and Jones.
- 1:12:29Hicks returns are a big item in this game.
- 1:12:32A 39 yard punt, a 15 yard return.
- 1:12:35Four and a half minutes exactly left in the half.
- 1:12:38First down Dallas at the Ram 40.
- 1:12:41The score tie is 13 all. Let's take time out.

- 1:13:33But most of all, we make it simple to make your office more productive.
- 1:13:38Introducing Exxon Office Systems.
- 1:13:47At halftime on our broadcast, Brent Musburger will come along with Jim Finks, the General Manager of the Chicago Bears, John Jefferson,
- 1:13:54the fine receiver of the San Diego Chargers.
- 1:13:57And Brent will also offer his opinion as to who will reach the silver ball.
- 1:14:00He's a braver man than I am.
- 1:14:02The ball is at the Los Angeles 39 in a first down for Dallas.
- 1:14:06The Red Springs in the backfield with Dorsett.
- 1:14:11Scores tied 13-all.
- 1:14:13Excuse me, Jack. This would be a good time for a play-action pass on first and 10.
- 1:14:17Danny White, the quarterback, hands it off to Springs, and he goes down to the 37-2 yard pickup.
- 1:14:24Springs got two. Cromwell made the tack right.
- 1:14:27I can't understand when they've gotten good field position like they have right now. They've been very conservative on first and 10.
- 1:14:33You would think they'd go after people on the first and 10 situation with some kind of a forward pass.
- 1:14:39Not surprising to see Dorsett having a good game, is it?
- 1:14:41No. That's never a surprise because he's really one of the great running backs in the National Football League.
- 1:14:46He's got tremendous speed. And again, any time he has a chance to pick up yardage with his obvious running room, boy, he's really tough to tack.
- 1:14:54He's got a good game down and eight. Three wide receivers for the Cowboys out of the shotgun.
- 1:14:59Danny White sets up drills it over the middle end.
- 1:15:01And it's intercepted.
- 1:15:02And it's intercepted by Cromwell at the 30-35. He is out to the 39, the first turnover of the game, and the ninth intercepts him by Nolan Cromwell of the year on a deflected pass.
- 1:15:13What an alert play. Here's an illustration. I think a great player, a great athlete, can make this kind of a play.
- 1:15:19Cromwell was deflected, but his reactions were excellent. He was able to get the tip ball, ricocheted, makes the play, and takes the Los Angeles Rams right out of the suit.
- 1:15:32Twenty-sixth interception against Danny White this year.
- 1:15:35What's the Rams at their own 39? And Cromwell did not try to run it back for a touchdown, Hank. He made sure he kept the ball.
- 1:15:40That's exactly right.
- 1:15:42First down at the 39 for Ferragamo and Company. First turnover of the game. Ferragamo's pass over the middle, and it is caught out at the 49, probably for a first down by a diving Billy Waddy.
- 1:15:55It's very close to a first down.
- 1:15:58Coverage was by Benny Barnes, and it wasn't very tight.
- 1:16:01It never is very tight, and that's why it's so important that you throw in front of and throw at Benny Barnes and Aaron Mitchell, 31 and 34.
- 1:16:08You know, you ought to give your receivers a baseball glove, a catcher's glove, and just play catch, Jack, because you can do that the way those people cover on passes.
- 1:16:15Second down and one, a good down for the Rams to gamble if they wish. We have exactly three minutes left in the half.
- 1:16:23And on second and one with Bryant and Thomas Ferragamo's going to gamble. He throws down the left sideline, and a flag goes. Is a flag thrown or not?
- 1:16:31No, it's just a cap.
- 1:16:32Now the official lost his cap. The pass is incomplete. Charlie Waters was covering Dennard, and he gave him no running room.
- 1:16:40Dennard had to go out of bounds, and once you do that, you can't come back in and catch the ball.
- 1:16:44I kind of think that's why the official threw his hat down to make sure he was reminded that he was pushed out of bounds and couldn't come back and make the play.
- 1:16:50Two-fifty-three remaining in the half, and now the Rams will be in tenth.
- 1:16:54I'm picking up the first down. It's third down and inches on their own, 49.
- 1:16:59They have two big backs in there, Cullen Bryant and Gerald Thomas. And the tight ends are Nelson and Arnold.
- 1:17:08Here is the running back Thomas failing to get a first down, and a flag goes down. And another flag goes down.
- 1:17:15Gerald Thomas went rather deep. He was trying to get a first down on third and inches. He went deep, and the penetration was made by Bob Brunig, the middle linebacker.
- 1:17:23That's kind of a player's tough. It's always difficult to bring the ball from the left side.
- 1:17:28A holding against Los Angeles.
- 1:17:30Left side all the way over to the right side. It's a long time to hold those blocks. I've said it many, many times during the course of the season, and very few times you see them succeed in making that yardage because it's too far to go.
- 1:17:41It was third down and one, and now a holding call. And if the Cowboys decline it, the Rams will have to punt or gamble on fourth down.
- 1:17:51I would think they're going to decline the penalty.
- 1:17:54Holding. It is declined, and it's fourth down and one.
- 1:18:03And they're motioning from the Rams sideline. They want to see where the ball is, and they just cross them up here, Hank, and try to go for it.
- 1:18:12We have 2.48 remaining in the half. The Rams have not automatically sent their punting team on the field.
- 1:18:19They're going to call for a measurement. Ferragamo wants to know exactly how much room he, how much yardage he needs on fourth down.
- 1:18:26Mind you, the penalty has already been declined by the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:18:30Yeah, it's just a decision now as to whether the Rams are going to kick the ball or whether they decide to try to go for it on fourth.
- 1:18:35And it's about a yard, right on the nose, about a yard.
- 1:18:40That's what it is, is a rather long yard when you look at it. It's one yard.
- 1:18:44And now they're going to punt. It was a little too long to take a chance. What do you think of that strategy?
- 1:18:49Oh, I think it's the only thing you could do. I don't think there's any way in the world you could deliver the ball to the Cowboys at midfield.
- 1:18:54You've got to kick the ball and make them go the long way and earn what they get instead of giving it to them.
- 1:18:58The interception by Cromwell stopped the Dallas Drive, and then the Rams were unable to do much.
- 1:19:05They got one first down, but they couldn't get another.
- 1:19:08And the kicker is Corral, and Jones has been murder all day for the Cowboys. Back into his 11-yard line.
- 1:19:14A good snap from center, no pressure, and a rather low kick. And Jones took it on to 17 running right.
- 1:19:20He spins to the 19-yard line, and down he goes. Harris, the linebacker downfield with a hit.
- 1:19:25And we have 239 remaining in the half. A 36-yard punt, only a 2-yard return.
- 1:19:31The Dallas Cowboys, tied with the Rams, 13-all, are at their own 20 with 239 remaining in the half.
- 1:19:43Brent Musburger comes along at half-time. His guests will be Jim Finks and J.J. John Jefferson of the San Diego Chargers.
- 1:19:53Cowboys come out. Reggie Doss plays the defensive end spot. Armand Brooks, Fanning is in there, and Youngblood up front.
- 1:20:03For Los Angeles, motion by Drew Pearson, and a toss to Ron Spring.
- 1:20:08Ron's right, cuts back, 25 goes outside, 30 first down, and tackled near the Dallas 35 for a thick first down with 230 left.
- 1:20:17The next set-up that the motion are using is confusing. The Rams are a little bit on defense.
- 1:20:23That time, Irvin, that time had to play the strong position, the strong safety position.
- 1:20:29And Nolan Cromwell played on number 88. Drew Pearson, which was a mismatch, there's no force in this back side, and that's why they were able to make the yard as they made.
- 1:20:40As I saw Leroy Irvin chasing the motion, and the next moment you saw him bumping Springs out of bounds on the opposite side of the field at the 34.
- 1:20:48That's exactly right. They're putting pressure on him from a run standpoint, support standpoint, Jack.
- 1:20:52Two minutes left and a half, first down Dallas at their own 34. That was a 14-yard pick-up by Springs.
- 1:20:57A timeout on the field with the score tied, the Rams 13, the Cowboys 13.
- 1:21:02Hello Rusty Jones. Hey, how are you? Goodbye Rusty cars. Hi, I'm Rusty Jones.
- 1:21:10Who? What? Rusty Jones rust proofing. You know, I can save your car from rust.
- 1:21:15You can? Sure, because I'm more than just rust proofing. I'm the one option you can buy for your car that actually appreciates value.
- 1:21:22How's that? I'll stick with your new car, protecting it from rust for as long as you own it.
- 1:21:27And everybody knows a rust-free car is worth more trade inside. You really stick with my car?
- 1:21:32Day and night, winter and summer. No vacation? Not even a coffee break. No gimmick?
- 1:21:38Nope, I just want your car to stay rust free so you can say, Hello Rusty Jones. Goodbye Rusty cars.
- 1:21:47Hello Rusty Jones. Goodbye, goodbye, Rusty cars.
- 1:21:54Look for new car dealers that offer Rusty Jones Car Saver System. It's a sure sign they care.
- 1:22:01Thanks, Tram. Do you think we're watching a Super Bowl team in either one of these squads today?
- 1:22:07Yes, I think so, Jack. I think either one of these two teams could do extremely well.
- 1:22:12They've got outstanding records, good football teams, good balance, good defense, good offense, excellent kicking. They're both very capable.
- 1:22:20Down their own 34, a first down for the Cowboys, two minutes left in the half. Springs and Dorsett in the backfield, that combination has been going well.
- 1:22:28And on first down, the gibbons to Springs, pops it up the middle, comes to the 40. Good moves, he's out to the 44 yard line.
- 1:22:35And he picked up nine and he picked up ten and he got a first down to the 45.
- 1:22:41That was a counterplay, a misdirection play with the idea of trying to tell them on the idea that Dorsett was going to go to the right.
- 1:22:47And they get it back to Springs, coming back to the back side, the middle line back to pursuit, and that's exactly what you want on the play.
- 1:22:53Now White's first down pass steps up and drills it. It's caught inside the 40 for a first down, the tackle made by Leroy Irvin.
- 1:22:59They're picking on that rookie cornerback, Hank, and another first down as they mark the ball down at the Los Angeles 37.
- 1:23:06I'd be relentless in my approach as far as throwing a ball on 47. You can do that anytime you want to if you get them in single coverage.
- 1:23:13And I don't think Dallas has done nearly as much as they should have so far in this game.
- 1:23:18Now a timeout stops the clock with 1.28 remaining in the half charged against the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:23:25They used one earlier, they have one remaining. And we have 1.28 remaining in the half with the score tied at 13-0.
- 1:23:34How did they get that single coverage with Pearson in front of Leroy Irvin?
- 1:23:39They're just playing single coverage is all, Jack, and I think somewhere along the line they're going to have to mix it up a little bit more
- 1:23:44and try to help Irvin by zoning to that side to give him a little relief because I don't think he can cover one on one.
- 1:23:51And I think the Cowboys are beginning to find that out and they're starting to take advantage of it.
- 1:23:56Leroy Irvin is on the corner filling in for Pat Thomas. He's out with a bad ankle.
- 1:24:00Irvin is a rookie out of Kansas, 5'11", 180. Trying to cover Drew Pearson.
- 1:24:05He's a 6'1", 183 and a shrewd veteran. Danny White is 7 out of 14, one intercept at 79 yards.
- 1:24:12Ferragamo is 7 out of 13 for 118 yards and one touchdown. We've only had one turnover in this game.
- 1:24:19That was a Ram interception by Cromwell, his ninth of the year.
- 1:24:231.28 remaining in the half. Good game, Henry.
- 1:24:27Excellent game. Much, much better than the one we had a couple of weeks ago in Orange County.
- 1:24:3235 to nothing at one time in favor of the Rams, but not today.
- 1:24:35First down at the Los Angeles 37.
- 1:24:38I would go after Irvin right now. Look at him, he's on the line of scrimmage, bump and run.
- 1:24:41I throw the ball right on top and try to get a big play on him right away.
- 1:24:45Out of the shotgun, Danny White back to throw. He looks and he throws it long down the middle and it is incomplete.
- 1:24:51He tried to throw it on the outside and allow Bush Johnson to run under it.
- 1:24:55Nolan Cromwell stayed right with him.
- 1:24:57Second and ten. Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS radio network.
- 1:25:03WBBM Chicago News and Sports Radio 78.
- 1:25:10Second down and ten Dallas from the Los Angeles 37.
- 1:25:13Score tied 13 all. The Rams have never been behind in this game.
- 1:25:19They've had two touchdowns, but one of the extra points was blocked.
- 1:25:24And that extra point that was blocked may turn out to be a big part of this final score.
- 1:25:29Second and ten.
- 1:25:32Out of the shotgun with Preston Pearson in the lineup.
- 1:25:36White's going to put it up again.
- 1:25:38Sets up and looks, throws it and it's caught by Pearson.
- 1:25:41Inside the 35, they give him forward progress down to the 26 and that'll be a first down.
- 1:25:49A first down for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:25:52105 left in the half and Danny White has ample time.
- 1:25:57It is a first down at the 26 yard line of the Rams.
- 1:26:00White back to throw. No pressure.
- 1:26:02Sets up, steps up, throws it into the end zone and it is incomplete and out of the end zone.
- 1:26:07Intended for Drew Pearson who caught that last ball. Jeff Delaney was covering that time.
- 1:26:11Deep in the end zone is a problem too Jack. That's where the sun is peeking through.
- 1:26:15You look back into the sun and you have a hard time making a catch.
- 1:26:18The only place that's really a problem at this stage of the game, the end zone of the going in,
- 1:26:22the way the Cowboys are trying to make a score right now.
- 1:26:25A couple of passes to Preston Pearson to set it up.
- 1:26:28One to the 37, a pass to the 26.
- 1:26:31Second and ten now with 51 seconds remaining in the half. That's a lot of time.
- 1:26:36It sure is especially when you're on the 26 yard line going in.
- 1:26:40And the Cowboys have one time out remaining.
- 1:26:43White's come in from the bench for Tom Landry.
- 1:26:46Pearson goes to the right. Tony Hill is to the left.
- 1:26:50Book Johnson is the third wide receiver.
- 1:26:53Preston Pearson is in the lineup and it's second and ten from the 26 of L.A.
- 1:26:58Pearson sets up on a wing, double wing now.
- 1:27:01One on one over there on the left side.
- 1:27:03Here's White back to the middle.
- 1:27:05Stepped up in the pocket and throws and it is intercepted by the Rams.
- 1:27:09They have the ball out of their 26 yard line.
- 1:27:12Walks right into that ball, the second interception by the Rams with 41 seconds remaining in the half.
- 1:27:18They did a good job on the left side. Drew Pearson was knocked off his feet on the play.
- 1:27:22Couldn't get downfield.
- 1:27:24Danny White tried to locate a secondary receiver and Lucia Smith really did a super job of anticipating the thrown ball comes up with the interception.
- 1:27:31And that was his first of the year for the rookie out of Cal State in Fullerton, California.
- 1:27:36The second against Danny White and the 27th of the year intercepted against the Dallas quarterback.
- 1:27:43So a big play by Lucia Smith and the Rams have 41 seconds left in the half.
- 1:27:49They have three time outs left.
- 1:27:51They got a chance to get something in the middle.
- 1:27:53He's back to throw. Farragano.
- 1:27:55He's got a short caught by Guman at the 30 yard line.
- 1:27:58He's brought down right there in a pick up of four yards.
- 1:28:02Why was the middle opening?
- 1:28:03Well, they were very concerned about the outside receivers.
- 1:28:06The safety man Waters was way back deep naturally because he's trying to prevent the opportunity for them to make a big play.
- 1:28:12So they got to give you something in the middle.
- 1:28:14Second down and six from their own 30 for the Rams.
- 1:28:16We have 32 seconds left in the half. Scores tied 13 off.
- 1:28:20And let's pause for this.
- 1:28:24Weekends were made for sports.
- 1:28:26That's why we have two new editions of Sports Time beginning January 10th and 11th.
- 1:28:31I'm Bill Schweitzer.
- 1:28:33Saturday and Sunday morning I'll be here covering all the previous night's action.
- 1:28:36Previewing the upcoming events featuring interviews with the top players and coaches in the major sports.
- 1:28:40And all the excitement from the sports world on Sports Time.
- 1:28:43It's Saturday and Sunday morning beginning January 10th and 11th on most of the CBS radio network stations.
- 1:28:48Hear them here.
- 1:28:56Shortly after the game was tied on the touchdown run by Dorsett and the extra point by Septien.
- 1:29:03The Cowboys were on the move but Cromwell intercepted it.
- 1:29:06The Los Angeles 39 with 340 left in the half.
- 1:29:09I'll be darned if the Cowboys didn't get another drive going.
- 1:29:12And then here moments ago with 41 seconds left in the half.
- 1:29:15And now we have 32 remaining.
- 1:29:18An interception by Lucia Smith, his first of the year at the Los Angeles 26.
- 1:29:21So the Cowboys who were in close enough were a possible field goal to give them a halftime lead.
- 1:29:28We'll try to nullify the ram attack here in the final 32 seconds of the half.
- 1:29:33We're tied 13 off.
- 1:29:35And Ferragamo has Dinnard and Waddy to the right.
- 1:29:38Waddy goes in motion.
- 1:29:39Ferragamo's back to throw.
- 1:29:41He's run by Martin.
- 1:29:42He throws.
- 1:29:43It's caught by Cullen Bryant.
- 1:29:44Bryant did not get a first down.
- 1:29:46He's out to the 34.
- 1:29:47Charlie Waters threw him to the turf.
- 1:29:50And we have 22 seconds left in the half.
- 1:29:53And the Rams use another timeout and they have one remaining.
- 1:29:57Ferragamo can read that putz pretty well and get rid of the ball in a hurry.
- 1:30:00You know, he's got a very quick release, good vision.
- 1:30:03And really I think he's done a remarkable job.
- 1:30:05He's only played for two years.
- 1:30:06This is the second year of his pro career whereby he's played that much.
- 1:30:10And I think he's picked up everything extremely well.
- 1:30:13And he has a good receiving running back in Cullen Bryant.
- 1:30:19He's got a good running catch to the ball.
- 1:30:20He caught 53 prior to today.
- 1:30:22Yes, and they have a good, I think, communication between the quarterback and the receivers.
- 1:30:28They run good, precise routes.
- 1:30:30Lionel Taylor, who was a great receiver back in the days of the American Football League,
- 1:30:36I think has done a super job with these young receivers.
- 1:30:38And it shows that he's done a good job of teaching.
- 1:30:41Again this year, folks, CBS Radio Sports brings you the senior ball.
- 1:30:45The date is January 17.
- 1:30:47The American Football League players show their skills.
- 1:30:49The senior ball, Jim Kelly and Bill Walkerson describe the action.
- 1:30:52Here it's here.
- 1:30:54We have a 13-13 tie.
- 1:30:56Dorsett has carried 11 times, 73 yards.
- 1:30:59Probably won't get it again during this half.
- 1:31:03You never know, 22 seconds remaining in the half.
- 1:31:08Rams have never been behind in this game.
- 1:31:11And an extra point blocked after their first touchdown.
- 1:31:15Third down and two.
- 1:31:18Barragamo.
- 1:31:20As Drew Hillen is the wide receiver, they stay on the ground and get a first down.
- 1:31:24Cullen Bryant comes out to the 41-yard line, and the Rams use their final timeout with 17 seconds remaining in the half.
- 1:31:30They have a first down at their own 41.
- 1:31:33Bryant seems to be running rather well.
- 1:31:35I think he lost 10 pounds this week.
- 1:31:37He was struck with a flu.
- 1:31:39Well, I mentioned earlier that sometimes when you're off a whole week at this stage of the season,
- 1:31:43you get your legs back, you're very fresh.
- 1:31:45And even though you might have been sick, it all depends on how much weight you lost.
- 1:31:50But he looks good and fresh and has done a good job here this afternoon.
- 1:31:53He's in there with Mike Newman at the moment.
- 1:31:55They really have a dearth of running backs on this Rams club.
- 1:31:58We haven't seen much of the rookie Gerald Thomas.
- 1:32:00He's been piling up big yards, running for an average gain of 6.6 per carry.
- 1:32:06But it's tough to do against the Cowboys, and it's been more of an aerial game for Los Angeles.
- 1:32:12So Gerald Thomas, J-E-W-E-R-L, hasn't had a chance to strut his stuff.
- 1:32:18Now the Rams are out of timeouts and almost out of time here in the second quarter.
- 1:32:2317 seconds remaining in the half.
- 1:32:25First down at their own 40.
- 1:32:27We'll see some aerials now, one, two, or three of them.
- 1:32:30Yes, we surely will.
- 1:32:34Out they come with Waddy and Dinar to the right side.
- 1:32:38Drew Hill, the other wide receiver.
- 1:32:41Now the Cowboys play.
- 1:32:43Blitz is on.
- 1:32:45A delayed blitz.
- 1:32:46Farragamo throws long down the middle.
- 1:32:48Waddy can't get to it.
- 1:32:50Waddy can't get to it.
- 1:32:51They had a crossing pattern with Waddy and Dinar coming up to cover Steve Wilson and Dennis Thurman.
- 1:32:58Waddy didn't look like he knew where the ball was.
- 1:33:00It looked like he lost it some way and looked like he was confused on where the ball was thrown.
- 1:33:08Now we have 11 seconds remaining in the half and it is second down and 10.
- 1:33:15So time for another bomb or two for the Rams.
- 1:33:20The loser of this game is eliminated from the playoffs.
- 1:33:23If Dallas wins, they play at Atlanta.
- 1:33:25If the Rams win, they play at Philadelphia.
- 1:33:26I like the Rams approach.
- 1:33:27They're on the attack trying to make something happen.
- 1:33:30Now a timeout is called by Charlie Waters and the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:33:34They want to make certain about their coverage with 11 seconds remaining in the half.
- 1:33:38They don't want to be burned on some missed assignments.
- 1:33:42Now the Cowboys are out of timeouts.
- 1:33:44Neither club has one left.
- 1:33:46The Cowboys have six defensive backs in the game.
- 1:33:52Including Dexter Clinkdale.
- 1:33:54They've lost Randy Hughes today with an injury.
- 1:33:57Thurman, Waters, Barnes, Clinkdale, Wilson and Mitchell.
- 1:34:07All during the week and over the weekend, CBS Radio's top sportscasts do bring you timely and lively information on what's happening.
- 1:34:14Wynn Elliott, Jim Kelly, Brent Musburger, Ron Webber, Bill Schweizer, Howard David and Dick Stockton.
- 1:34:20CBS Radio Sports.
- 1:34:22Hear it here.
- 1:34:24James Tram and I will be right back down here on New Year's Day for the Baylor Alabama Cottonball game.
- 1:34:29And that should be one great football game.
- 1:34:31I talked to Cotton Davidson.
- 1:34:32He used to play for us and he's one of the coaches on the Baylor staff.
- 1:34:35Talked to him yesterday.
- 1:34:36He's very, very excited about this game against Alabama.
- 1:34:39They think they're very sold on their football team.
- 1:34:42They haven't gotten the recognition that they deserve.
- 1:34:45I think they're kind of the Roger Dangerfield of college football.
- 1:34:48But they're out to prove something this weekend.
- 1:34:50For a gamma back to throw and it's intercepted by Steve Wilson at the 45.
- 1:34:54He tackled it midfield and we have two seconds left and a half.
- 1:34:58Dallas gets the ball at midfield with two seconds left.
- 1:35:01That's the first ram turnover.
- 1:35:02Steve Wilson gets his fifth of the year.
- 1:35:06That extra defensive back really helped because there was deep coverage and he was able to just step right up and pick it off.
- 1:35:16He is brought down at midfield.
- 1:35:19With only two seconds remaining in the half, score tied 13-0.
- 1:35:23No more timeouts remaining.
- 1:35:25Breezer Club, final two minutes of this first half has taken a long time to play.
- 1:35:30Brent Musburger comes along here at halftime on CBS radio.
- 1:35:34And in addition, the Lincoln High School band from Bloomington, Minnesota is down here in Big D to entertain the fans.
- 1:35:42They've got a big bend formation which means they have three wide receivers on the right side, one on the left.
- 1:35:47Back in the backfield, back there with the quarterback.
- 1:35:50I'm going to try to throw something deep.
- 1:35:51Three men rush by the Rams and a flag goes down and White airs it out down inside the 10 in the heavy coverage.
- 1:35:58And it is intercepted by the Rams at the two-yard line.
- 1:36:02The play still goes.
- 1:36:03Here's Cromwell off to the 20-yard line, to the 25.
- 1:36:06Time has expired.
- 1:36:07Cromwell is out of bounds at the 30-yard line.
- 1:36:09And now we'll check the flag and see if indeed the half is over.
- 1:36:15No more time left on the clock.
- 1:36:19We'll see who the penalty is against.
- 1:36:21If it's against the defense, we'll have another play.
- 1:36:24If it's against the offense, there will be no more play.
- 1:36:27Yeah, I think it's against the offense, Jack.
- 1:36:29Offside, Dallas.
- 1:36:31Time has expired and the half is over.
- 1:36:35And that pass was intercepted and it's the third of the game charged against Danny White.
- 1:36:41There's the gun sounding the end of the first half with a score.
- 1:36:45The Cowboys 13 and the Rams 13.
- 1:36:47It's high and deep and Hill's going to return it from the four.
- 1:36:50He runs left to the five, to the 10, to the 15.
- 1:36:53He said he gets to the 20.
- 1:36:54He's out to the 25.
- 1:36:55No flag.
- 1:36:56And the Rams will go from their own 25-yard line, tied 13-all.
- 1:37:00Steve Wilson downfield to make the Dallas tackle.
- 1:37:0315-25 to our line.
- 1:37:06Larry Bethea that time had a good shot, number 76, to make an attack.
- 1:37:09He got down there in good shape, but he got all the way down the field and missed the tackle,
- 1:37:13the tackle that he should have made.
- 1:37:17So Ferragamo and company go to work.
- 1:37:19Ferragamo had one intercepted in the first half and he was 9 out of 17 for 128 yards and one touchdown.
- 1:37:26And Cullen Bryant, the up back, the full back, and Gerald Thomas, the tailback.
- 1:37:32And here is a give to Gerald Thomas and he is tackled after gaining two yards on a slam.
- 1:37:37The middle linebackers, Bob Bruening along with Randy White were there to make the hit.
- 1:37:42That was a good time, Jack, to throw the ball, go back into the pocket, throw the ball.
- 1:37:45Charlie Waters that time, number 41, was up like a linebacker that time.
- 1:37:49They were playing with three deep.
- 1:37:50They had no help whatsoever in the middle.
- 1:37:52And he had a good chance to make a big play in the pass situation.
- 1:37:54You said all season, Hank, that in order to beat him, you have to throw him first down.
- 1:37:57Yeah, you're not going to beat this team.
- 1:37:59You're not going to beat this team running the football at him.
- 1:38:01You've got to throw the ball and that's the way you win.
- 1:38:04Billy Waddy goes on the wing and comes in motion.
- 1:38:06And it's second down and eight.
- 1:38:07Now Ferragamo gives to Bryant.
- 1:38:09He'll have a goal nowhere.
- 1:38:10Harvey Martin, a loss on the play.
- 1:38:12Back inside the 25-yard line.
- 1:38:15And he lost four yards.
- 1:38:17It's tough, it's very tough to run outside on Dallas and especially it's very difficult to run with Cullen Blount.
- 1:38:24Cullen Blount is a better straight-ahead runner than he is a sideway runner.
- 1:38:27And for that reason, there was no chance of the play.
- 1:38:30And the thing that you have to be concerned about is when you run those kind of plays,
- 1:38:33where you don't have a chance, you really give the Dallas Cowboys a lot of enthusiasm on defense.
- 1:38:39He lost three yards as it turned out.
- 1:38:41Back to the 24 and it's third and 11 for the Rams.
- 1:38:45They have Waddy and Menard to the right.
- 1:38:47The middle is open.
- 1:38:49Miller is the other wide receiver.
- 1:38:50Dallas going to blitz.
- 1:38:51Here's a quick pass underneath.
- 1:38:53Outside to Billy Waddy.
- 1:38:54Incomplete and he had to knock it away from Steve Wilkin who had very good coverage on him.
- 1:38:59Incomplete and plenty of time for the Rams.
- 1:39:01You're right. He was playing pretty tight that time.
- 1:39:03They tried to throw the ball on top.
- 1:39:05Wilson did a very good job of covering Waddy on the play.
- 1:39:09And now they're in a kicking situation.
- 1:39:12Oh, you can really feel it swinging over to the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:39:15It hasn't been for those interceptions that came on top right now,
- 1:39:18but they're going to get the ball in great shape as James Jones hands it at 35
- 1:39:22waiting for the Frank Corral punt.
- 1:39:27This will be the fifth punt for Corral.
- 1:39:29He gets a good snap and a pretty good kick.
- 1:39:33It goes off to the left sideline and bounces inside the 40-35,
- 1:39:36taking on the 33 by Jones,
- 1:39:38and he has tackled across the 35 out near his own 37-yard line.
- 1:39:43Cowboys get it.
- 1:39:4413-14 left in the third quarter.
- 1:39:4643-yard punt, 4-yard return.
- 1:39:48This time Corral kicked it away from Jones and has been burning the Rams this afternoon.
- 1:39:53With the score tied, 13-all.
- 1:39:55Let's take time out.
- 1:39:57We'll have a listen.
- 1:40:27The coach who does it quite the way.
- 1:40:29What you do is right for you.
- 1:40:35For all you do, the king of kings is coming through.
- 1:40:46For all that you do and do,
- 1:40:50it's right for you.
- 1:40:54Anheuser-Busch, Bangalore.
- 1:40:56The first half, the Cowboys had the ball for 18, almost 19 minutes.
- 1:41:01The Rams had it for 11-09.
- 1:41:03And here the Rams kept it for less than two minutes before punting it away.
- 1:41:07And Henry, you can feel the momentum really swinging over to the Cowboys who are at their own 37.
- 1:41:11Yeah, it's changing a little bit, but it's a long way from being over, Jack.
- 1:41:14And I think if the Rams can stop him here,
- 1:41:17Gallagher should come out on the attack here.
- 1:41:19They should throw the ball.
- 1:41:20They should go after number 47.
- 1:41:22I would.
- 1:41:23And try to make something happen fast.
- 1:41:26New house and door set in the backfield and motion by Drew Gerson.
- 1:41:30And then contact was made by Jones as he reached out and touched the center.
- 1:41:34Now, whether he was drawn offside or not, I do not know.
- 1:41:37It is against the Rams and that'll make it first and five.
- 1:41:41Youngblood, Jones, Brooks, and Dreier playing up front for the Rams.
- 1:41:46Incroachment, number 76, defense.
- 1:41:54Call against Cody Jones, encroachment, moves the ball out to the Dallas 47.
- 1:41:59All of the plays come in from the sideline for Danny White.
- 1:42:03Robert Shaw at center.
- 1:42:05Otherwise, the offensive line is intact for the Cowboys.
- 1:42:09First and five, Newhouse popping it up the middle and Dreier nails him,
- 1:42:13but he came across the 45-yard line out to the 46 and he got three or four.
- 1:42:19It'll be second down and short.
- 1:42:22Newhouse to the 46.
- 1:42:23And it'll be second down and a yard and a half.
- 1:42:28We'll call it second down and two.
- 1:42:34Now it's looked a lot better when Springs was in there, didn't it, rather than Newhouse?
- 1:42:37Yes, that's right.
- 1:42:38He's got a lot more speed, a lot more quickness,
- 1:42:40and gives them an added dimension at that fullback position.
- 1:42:44Splitbacks, Newhouse and Dorstet from the Dallas 46.
- 1:42:48Second down and two. Motion by Pearson again.
- 1:42:51Danny White, the door is set on a slant right, and he is out to the 48,
- 1:42:55has the first down for the Cowboys, and into Jack Reynolds and Johnny Johnson.
- 1:43:00What a first down for Dallas.
- 1:43:03He popped in there pretty good.
- 1:43:04Yes, he did.
- 1:43:05And Drew Pearson that time was lined up on the right side, came in motion to the left,
- 1:43:08and the young defensive back Leroy Urban over there is a little confused seemingly,
- 1:43:13and you'd think they would be able to do some good running and passing from that formation.
- 1:43:17Dorstet is down on the field.
- 1:43:19He really popped in there with a very strong tackle by both Reynolds and Johnny Johnson,
- 1:43:23and Dorstet is not up at this moment.
- 1:43:2612-17 up in the third quarter. Score tied 13-0.
- 1:43:30And they take time to tend to Donnie Dorstet.
- 1:43:33Looks like he's going to be down for a while.
- 1:43:35He's taking time out on the field with his score tied 13-13.
- 1:43:39Donnie Dorstet along the sideline now, standing, trying to pull himself back together,
- 1:43:43just picked up the first down to the Dallas 49.
- 1:43:4712-17 left in the third quarter, and the score tied 13-13.
- 1:43:55Now Jones will run from Scrimmage along with John.
- 1:44:01And Mississippi State.
- 1:44:05On first down, Danny White.
- 1:44:08Stands Pearson in motion again.
- 1:44:11And tosses to Newhouse running left, cuts back, he's hit at midfield,
- 1:44:15and that's where he goes down.
- 1:44:17He picked up two yards.
- 1:44:18Jack Reynolds brought him down with a help of Fred Dreier.
- 1:44:24Neither club are really playing wide open football, are they?
- 1:44:29No, they're really not. They're really not on the attack like you think they would be, Jack.
- 1:44:35Dorstet comes back in now, and Jones goes out at second and eighth.
- 1:44:43And we had a flag down on the field, a late flag that I honestly didn't see,
- 1:44:48and yardage marked off back to the Dallas 44.
- 1:44:52A motion call against the Cowboys, making it first and 15.
- 1:45:03First and 15 at the Dallas 44.
- 1:45:08They line up in the eye. Pearson to the left, Tony Hillers to the right.
- 1:45:14The tight end is on the left side.
- 1:45:19And White gives the ball to Dorstet on a slant right.
- 1:45:22He talks across the 50, down to the 45 for big yards.
- 1:45:26It was first and 15, and it's now second down and four.
- 1:45:30Joe Harris, the tackler.
- 1:45:32He really whistled through there like the wind that night, didn't he?
- 1:45:34Got a good takeoff, good surge from the offensive line,
- 1:45:37saw the hole and took advantage of it, picked up 11 yards in the play.
- 1:45:41A beautiful run by Dorstet.
- 1:45:43To the Los Angeles 45 yard line.
- 1:45:4711-20 remaining in the period.
- 1:45:49Second down and four Dallas.
- 1:45:55Newhouse to Dorstet in the eye formation.
- 1:45:58Here's a give to Newhouse, the up back.
- 1:46:00He gets the first down to the 40 yard line.
- 1:46:03And Cromwell with a big tackle.
- 1:46:05The pace you know, right up in there.
- 1:46:07And Dorstet, Newhouse is upset that he didn't avoid that tackle because he'd gone for big yards.
- 1:46:12Yeah, Cromwell really, it's amazing to watch him play.
- 1:46:15He is really a super, super player.
- 1:46:18Nolan Cromwell, number 21, the free safety of the Los Angeles Rams.
- 1:46:21He's a great speed, excellent athlete, plays in the quarterback position at the University of Kansas,
- 1:46:25but he is a super, super athlete.
- 1:46:28That's 15 first downs for the Cowboys now, as opposed to 9 for the Rams.
- 1:46:33And a first down at the Los Angeles 40.
- 1:46:36They had to throw the ball here in first and 10.
- 1:46:37They got a good field position and they're doing a good job of making those linebackers stay in tight.
- 1:46:42Here it is.
- 1:46:43He's got it up, steps up, throws one downfield.
- 1:46:46Saldy has it and he's out of bounds at the 3.
- 1:46:49J. Saldy out of bounds at the 3.
- 1:46:52Over Nolan Cromwell, about who they were just talking, who was over there helping out.
- 1:46:58First and goal, Dallas.
- 1:47:00From the 40 to the 3 yard line.
- 1:47:03Play action pass right on the number.
- 1:47:05It was a good call, excellent call, but they have been running well.
- 1:47:08They got everybody concerned a little bit about the run.
- 1:47:10Take the run, threw it on top.
- 1:47:12Good play.
- 1:47:13J. Saldy making a reception, number 87.
- 1:47:15And now the ball's on about the 3 and a half yard line.
- 1:47:18Saldy could hardly wait for that ball to come down in his arms.
- 1:47:21He could only run out of bounds after catching it, but was the angle.
- 1:47:25Meanwhile, pressure by Jack Youngblood and Jim Youngblood on the quarterback.
- 1:47:29White, but he got it away and it's first and goal for Dallas.
- 1:47:32Trying to lead for the first time.
- 1:47:33This would be another good time for a play action pass.
- 1:47:35They think you're going to claim it in there.
- 1:47:37If you're going to throw one, the good time to throw it is on first and 10 from play action.
- 1:47:41Nice, Saldy to give to Newhouse.
- 1:47:43Tackle at the 2 yard line.
- 1:47:44He's about a yard and a half away as he's stopped by Reggie Dodd.
- 1:47:48They're going to try to punch it out, hey?
- 1:47:51Yeah, evidently so, but if you're going to throw a play action,
- 1:47:53the time to throw it already is on first and goal because they're in there tough,
- 1:47:58coming across the line of scrimmage, digging in to stop the run,
- 1:48:01and sometimes the play action pass opens up nicely.
- 1:48:04The Cowboys got this ball back at the 37 yard line.
- 1:48:08They have overcome a couple of penalties and they're down to the 2.
- 1:48:12Second and goal.
- 1:48:15White doesn't do much running or rolling out.
- 1:48:18He has Dorcent and Springs in there now.
- 1:48:21Springs can find the end zone.
- 1:48:23It's second and goal.
- 1:48:25Moved to by Saldy, a fumble and White falls on it and just was able to get it back.
- 1:48:31And it'll be third and goal on the fumble.
- 1:48:35It's a bad kind of waste of play.
- 1:48:40White fumbled the ball and could only fall on it after five.
- 1:48:46Third and goal.
- 1:48:50Nine-40 remaining.
- 1:48:53In the third quarter with a score tied 13-all.
- 1:48:56Certainly Dallas has been closing up for at least three points,
- 1:48:59but they won seven.
- 1:49:00They have first and goal at the three. It's third and goal from the five.
- 1:49:05Saldy is the tight end.
- 1:49:07Hill and Pearson are the wide receivers.
- 1:49:10White likely to throw and now they didn't beat the 32nd clock.
- 1:49:14And it'll be third and goal from the 10th.
- 1:49:16And they didn't have enough people on the line of scrimmage either, I don't think, that time, Jack.
- 1:49:19They only had six instead of seven.
- 1:49:21It's all the lineup in the backfield instead of on the line of scrimmage.
- 1:49:25Five-yard penalty for delay of game.
- 1:49:27Van Haggerty, the referee, marks it back out at the 10th.
- 1:49:30Third and goal from there.
- 1:49:33You're in game offense. Third down.
- 1:49:38And now the Rams put in Jeff Delaney at the back.
- 1:49:41Joe Harris, the linebacker. Lucha Smith, another back.
- 1:49:46Actually, if you're going to throw the ball on this situation, third down,
- 1:49:49you're better off on the 10-yard line than you are on the five
- 1:49:52because you've got more room to operate and more patterns to open up.
- 1:49:56And they're better off here now for that reason,
- 1:49:58for they're obviously going to throw the ball on third and 10.
- 1:50:01Six penalties for the Cowboys.
- 1:50:03It's third and goal from the 10-yard line.
- 1:50:05They go into the shotgun. Preston Pearson is in the lineup.
- 1:50:08They go into the double wing.
- 1:50:11And on third down, Hill goes in motion.
- 1:50:13White's back to throw. Pressure, pressure, pressure.
- 1:50:16He throws it. It's caught inside the 10.
- 1:50:18First set, touchdown!
- 1:50:20He hurled it over the tackler and went in.
- 1:50:22Tony Dorsett saw that goal line and he's alive.
- 1:50:26Dorsett was lined up on the wing that time.
- 1:50:28He came across the middle. He was open.
- 1:50:31And he made a gallon effort to get into the end zone for the touchdown.
- 1:50:34A good shot.
- 1:50:35Rob Perry is stretched out on the goal line.
- 1:50:37He hit Dorsett.
- 1:50:38Dorsett went right at him and sailed over the top of Perry despite the hit.
- 1:50:43And got the touchdown pass.
- 1:50:45Good for 10 yards in Dallas League for the first time in the game, 19-13.
- 1:50:51Second touchdown of the day for Dorsett.
- 1:50:56Well, they overcame three penalties on that drive.
- 1:51:00And started back at their own 37.
- 1:51:05Now the Cowboys have a 19-13 lead.
- 1:51:09With 9-11 remaining in the game.
- 1:51:13Long pass to Saldy from the 40 down to the 3.
- 1:51:18Set it up.
- 1:51:21And Rob Perry is still hurt.
- 1:51:23Missing from the ram lineup today is Pat Thomas on the left corner.
- 1:51:27Here's another Pro Bowl cornerback.
- 1:51:29Rob Perry stretched out on the goal line.
- 1:51:32Boy, that Dorsett.
- 1:51:33You could see it earlier in the game, Hank, that he was possessed.
- 1:51:35He had his mind made up. He was going to have a good game.
- 1:51:38And he's a champion.
- 1:51:39Oh, he is. But again, he's fun to watch.
- 1:51:41And he doesn't run with the same abandon when he's in traffic in trouble as he does when he has any kind of running room.
- 1:51:47When he's running room at all, he really fights for those holes.
- 1:51:50There's a timeout on the field with a score.
- 1:51:52The Cowboys 19, the Los Angeles Rams 13.
- 1:51:59Dallas trying to hike their lead to seven points.
- 1:52:01Waters will hold.
- 1:52:02Septien drives the extra point.
- 1:52:05Cowboys set.
- 1:52:06The snap is made. It's low.
- 1:52:08Waters gets it down.
- 1:52:09Septien makes it good.
- 1:52:11Seven-point advantage for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:52:13A while ago, Rob Perry was helped off the field.
- 1:52:17He walked off with help.
- 1:52:19And he wouldn't get much in the trade-in for him right now.
- 1:52:22He is really shaken up.
- 1:52:24And this Cowboy crowd is on his feet.
- 1:52:27The Cowboys are in the lead.
- 1:52:31The Cowboys are in the lead.
- 1:52:35The Cowboys are in the lead.
- 1:52:39The Cowboys are in the lead.
- 1:52:42Well, things have changed around.
- 1:52:44And now the Rams will have to come to life.
- 1:52:46The last time they had the ball, they kept it less than two minutes.
- 1:52:48They only get a first down and had to punch.
- 1:52:50That was at the outset of this second half.
- 1:52:52And they're under the gun now.
- 1:52:54We talked about a conservative approach earlier, Henry.
- 1:52:56It's not going to be any now on the part of Los Angeles.
- 1:52:58This might be good for them because it might get them out of that pattern.
- 1:53:00And they can go on the attack and make something happen.
- 1:53:03This particular series, it can be very important, Jack.
- 1:53:06The kickoff return, the field position can be vital.
- 1:53:09And they have to do a good job of moving the football on this drive or else they're going to be in trouble.
- 1:53:14Cowboys led by the score of six to nothing.
- 1:53:18And the Rams on top six-three.
- 1:53:21They missed the extra point.
- 1:53:24It's a six-six game.
- 1:53:26And Los Angeles went on top 13 to six.
- 1:53:29And it was tied at the half 13 all.
- 1:53:31And now Dallas leads 20 to 13 with 9-11 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:53:36It is Drew Hill, a real threat back there.
- 1:53:39He returned 198 yards for a touchdown this year.
- 1:53:42He's averaged 20 yards for return.
- 1:53:44Septien kicks it.
- 1:53:45And Drew Hill will wait for it and return it.
- 1:53:48From the three, running left to the five, to the ten, to the 15.
- 1:53:52He throws down, gets to the 20, or on to the 25, to the 30-yard line.
- 1:53:56No flags, and the Rams are in good shape.
- 1:53:58As Hill steps out at the 30-yard line, Septien made the tackle after kicking the ball.
- 1:54:04They did a good job of bringing the ball back.
- 1:54:06They have good field position.
- 1:54:07Now they've got to make something happen, be on the attack, move the football, and get some points,
- 1:54:12or else they're going to be in trouble in this game.
- 1:54:14Farragamo completed 59% of his passes during the season and had 30 touchdown passes.
- 1:54:22And you say, Hank, you have to throw it against the Cowboys on first down.
- 1:54:25Especially on first down. You certainly do, Jack.
- 1:54:28Rallying by seven, the Rams come out.
- 1:54:31Rips it all over the ball.
- 1:54:35And motion by Bryant to pull back.
- 1:54:37Back to throw, Farragamo swings it out to Thomas.
- 1:54:40Thomas gets to the line.
- 1:54:41He didn't get to the line as soon as he lost the arc.
- 1:54:44Darrell Thomas hit by Aaron Mitchell, the cornerback.
- 1:54:49Another pass to Thomas, lost one.
- 1:54:51He was looking that way from the time he took the step.
- 1:54:53Yes he was.
- 1:54:54And Randy White, number 54, the defensive right tackle,
- 1:54:57really did a great job of reading the block of the offensive linemen,
- 1:55:01and he was right out there in the traffic on the play that was thrown to the outside.
- 1:55:04No chance whatsoever.
- 1:55:06If you've got to throw the ball upfield, upfield against this Dallas team,
- 1:55:09you've got to throw it sideways, you've got to throw it north and south, not east and west.
- 1:55:13Second down and 11 from their own 29 for the Rams.
- 1:55:16They trail by seven.
- 1:55:18Farragamo waits for the snap, takes the snap, back to throw, to the left sideline,
- 1:55:23and it's complete and the flag is thrown.
- 1:55:25And an interference will be called against Aaron Mitchell, who bumped his man out of bounds.
- 1:55:29That was Preston Denard trying to go down the sideline.
- 1:55:32He tried to get the ball between the corner and the safety man that time.
- 1:55:37Aaron Mitchell was playing short, and the deep back, 32, was playing deep.
- 1:55:42Interference number 34, first down.
- 1:55:45But Mitchell interfered on the play, as you said, Jack, and first down for the Rams.
- 1:55:48It's a big break for them.
- 1:55:49The crowd booed slightly, but most everybody saw that,
- 1:55:52and the ball is marked down at the Los Angeles 41-yard line and a first down.
- 1:56:00An interference call against Aaron Mitchell on the corner.
- 1:56:04We have eight, 13 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:56:08First down Rams, Waddy to the right, Denard to the left.
- 1:56:12Tied in Nelson on the left side, and here's the running play,
- 1:56:15and Thomas, although he was tripped up, sails out to the 45-yard line.
- 1:56:20Dee Dee Lewis got one hand on his ankle,
- 1:56:23and Thomas picked up a snappy five-yard for Los Angeles.
- 1:56:27Steve Wilson is now playing the right cornerback, left cornerback for Aaron Mitchell.
- 1:56:35Second down, Thomas got four, second and six.
- 1:56:39I should say for Benny Barnes, I'm sorry.
- 1:56:44So Wilson playing that left corner, covering Waddy at the moment.
- 1:56:48Ferragamo back to throw, looks, throws it, batted down, incomplete.
- 1:56:51Big John Dutton, six-seven, got a hand on the ball, and it'll be third and six.
- 1:57:00Dutton, six-seven, 265.
- 1:57:03Long time with Baltimore, got his hand up, and Ferragamo, despite his height of six-three,
- 1:57:08was unable to get rid of the ball downfield.
- 1:57:11And he had a lot of time to throw the ball that time.
- 1:57:13Wasn't really a lot of pressure that time, Jack.
- 1:57:15The final perfect 33, playing in, far yard seven.
- 1:57:2164,533 here today.
- 1:57:26Most of them Dallas fans.
- 1:57:29Now they take the blitz, whether they're going to come or not,
- 1:57:31remains to be seen, I don't think they will.
- 1:57:33Third and six, Ferragamo back to throw, he's under pressure, he throws it,
- 1:57:36and it is caught for first down,
- 1:57:38coming right inside the 40 of Dallas, down to the 37.
- 1:57:42That was almost a late hit by Dennis Sermon.
- 1:57:45Gerald Thomas caught the ball, he's not reputed to be a great pass catcher or blocker,
- 1:57:50only a runner, but he did a good job that time, and got him down to the Dallas 37 yard line.
- 1:57:55Ferragamo, you have to give him a lot of credit again.
- 1:57:57That time he read what happened, got the ball to the open man, Joel Thomas,
- 1:58:02and they have another first down, a big play by Ferragamo.
- 1:58:06Again, forward progress to the 36 yard line.
- 1:58:08He had a pumping up right here again, Jack.
- 1:58:10Elson, the tight end on the right side.
- 1:58:12Thomas and Bryant in the backfield, and he's the first down pass by Ferragamo,
- 1:58:17short over the middle, caught at the 35, the tackle made immediately,
- 1:58:20and a gain of only a yard and a half or so.
- 1:58:23Ball caught by Cullen Bryant, wrapped up by Bob Brunig, the linebacker.
- 1:58:27One thing these Cowboys always have had,
- 1:58:32including the days when they had Hollywood Henderson and others,
- 1:58:36they have had linebackers who have been able to keep pace with those running backs,
- 1:58:39Edie Lewis has slowed down a little bit, but he makes up for a lot of that with experience.
- 1:58:43Yeah, he's very intelligent, very bright, and makes up for it, as you say, by knowledge,
- 1:58:48but he doesn't have the speed that he had before.
- 1:58:51Second down and eight, down to the Dallas 35.
- 1:58:53A lot of room on the outside left.
- 1:58:55And let's see what Ferragamo does.
- 1:58:57He delays the ball to Thomas, and one yard, that's all he got.
- 1:59:02Harley Martin was there, Thomas one yard, third and seven coming up.
- 1:59:095.55 remaining in the third quarter, the Dallas Cowboys have the lead in this playoff game, 20 to 13.
- 1:59:16The ball is at the Cowboy 34.
- 1:59:23Third down and seven for the Rams.
- 1:59:27Waddy goes to the left with Sennard, on the wide race, to the right is Drew Hill.
- 1:59:36And here's Ferragamo to throw, hash time, throws, and it is intercepted by Dallas.
- 1:59:42Dallas has the ball, running with the ball is Dennis Salmon after Mitchell intercepted.
- 1:59:47He's down to the Rams, 40.
- 1:59:49He's inside the 40 in Pacholet, a flag is down back upfield.
- 1:59:53Forward lateral, Jack, no play, a forward pass, it was not a lateral, it was a forward pass, and the play will go back.
- 2:00:00Mitchell intercepted, but Dallas will still keep the ball.
- 2:00:05Mitchell intercepted, and then lateral it off to, it didn't lateral it, he tossed it off to Dennis Salmon, a forward pass, as Hank said.
- 2:00:11I didn't spot that, Henry.
- 2:00:12Yeah, they did.
- 2:00:13No question about the fact that it was a forward pass on the lateral attempt.
- 2:00:21And that time Ferragamo was a little slow getting the ball to the receiver.
- 2:00:25Boy, he had his man wide open, didn't he?
- 2:00:27He had him open for a long time, by the time he made a decision to throw the ball, it was too late, and intercepted that time by Aaron Mitchell.
- 2:00:35The illegal forward pass on the return, first down.
- 2:00:39Mitchell's interception stands, the ball is at the Dallas, 30.
- 2:00:43First down for the Cowboys, 5.13 remaining in the third quarter.
- 2:00:48So the interception was the second of the day against Vince Ferragamo.
- 2:00:53The first one was meaningless for the end of the first half.
- 2:01:00So we have 5.13 left in the third quarter.
- 2:01:03Cowboys have the ball at their own 30.
- 2:01:05They have a first down, they have the lead.
- 2:01:06With the score, the Cowboys 20, the Rams 13.
- 2:01:09Let's take time out.
- 2:01:11Given your treathers, wouldn't you really rather have a quiet, luxurious, elegant car?
- 2:01:16One that comes standard with power windows, power seats, air conditioning, even an automatic overdrive transmission?
- 2:01:23And under the hood, wouldn't you really rather have your choice of anything from a V6 to an optional V8 or a diesel?
- 2:01:29You would?
- 2:01:30Or just the Abuse dealer, and ask for the 1981 Electra Park Avenue.
- 2:01:35Wouldn't you please leave by the power of Buick?
- 2:01:41Ready on set.
- 2:01:44Hi, this is Michael Landon.
- 2:01:45You know what goes on behind the scenes is important.
- 2:01:48Because if things don't work well here, they won't work well up front.
- 2:01:51Same with pictures. What's behind them can make a difference.
- 2:01:54So I get mine printed on Kodak paper.
- 2:01:56And it's always available where you see the Kodak paper sign.
- 2:01:59You can't miss it. It's the sign with that memorable face. Mine.
- 2:02:03You're on, Mr. Landon.
- 2:02:05Okay.
- 2:02:06Look for the Kodak paper sign when you get your pictures developed.
- 2:02:09And tell them Michael sent you.
- 2:02:12Here's the first down running play by Doris Sett.
- 2:02:15He moves across the, out from the 30 yard line.
- 2:02:18Out to the 32. He got a couple in the Rams.
- 2:02:21Or without Rod Perry, who's sustained a blow to the head.
- 2:02:24Lucius Smith is then replacing him.
- 2:02:26So two rookies are playing the corners for the Rams.
- 2:02:29You know, that time the Dallas Cowboys went on a quick count again.
- 2:02:32The first time they did that, they picked up 11 yards.
- 2:02:34That time they tried to do it again.
- 2:02:36Same play, same formation.
- 2:02:38And the Rams were a little bit more alert and ready for the play.
- 2:02:41And they only picked up two yards on that one.
- 2:02:44Second down and eight from their own 32 for the Cowboys with Newhouse and Doris Sett.
- 2:02:49The defense and the Rams have to come up with some kind of a big play on their part of the field.
- 2:02:54Interception, fumble recovery, something.
- 2:02:56Here's a toss to Doris Sett running left.
- 2:02:58Gets outside to the 35, 40.
- 2:03:00And out of bounds he goes.
- 2:03:02And his own 46 and that's a Dallas first down.
- 2:03:04Reynolds bumps him out.
- 2:03:06They're sending a, they're sending a,
- 2:03:10an outside receiver, Drew Pearson in motion to the right.
- 2:03:13And they're taking their best defensive back out of the play.
- 2:03:16Talking about Nolan Cromwell.
- 2:03:18He's on the other side of the field when they run to the left.
- 2:03:20And he's out of business and that's why they're doing such a good job of making yardage on the play.
- 2:03:24We saw that the other night with Danny Schell of the Pittsburgh Steelers, didn't we?
- 2:03:27Yes we did.
- 2:03:28Doris Sett has caught, carried over 100 yards now.
- 2:03:3115 carries, 102 yards for Tony Doris Sett.
- 2:03:34He was pumped out at his own 46.
- 2:03:37And he's replaced by James Jones now.
- 2:03:40The ball's marked down on the Dallas 46 yard line.
- 2:03:45Shaw snaps the ball.
- 2:03:47The give to Newhouse, picks his way to midfield.
- 2:03:49Down to the 45, down to the 40.
- 2:03:51He breaks it at the 39.
- 2:03:53He has another first down.
- 2:03:54At the Ram 38, a strong run by Robert Newhouse to the Los Angeles 38.
- 2:04:03The Cowboys are really dominating the line of scrimmage, which is very obvious.
- 2:04:06And this is tough when you run the ball this well against the Los Angeles Rams.
- 2:04:11You're doing a number on them up front.
- 2:04:12They're really demoralizing that game.
- 2:04:14And this is what I was talking about earlier when I said I thought that the Rams looked sluggish.
- 2:04:18You're tired and lethargic and now it's showing up out there, isn't it?
- 2:04:21Yes it is.
- 2:04:22The ball is at the 38 of the Rams.
- 2:04:25Cowboys leading 20 to 13.
- 2:04:27They have another first down.
- 2:04:28They're piling up first downs.
- 2:04:31And here is a touchdown pass by Whitey.
- 2:04:34He hears it out deep for Drew Pearson inside the five, incomplete.
- 2:04:38And he was thrown down then by Lucius Smith, the rookie cornerback.
- 2:04:43Incomplete.
- 2:04:44The ball hung up the bit.
- 2:04:46Smith was able to get there.
- 2:04:47Well he made up his mind he's going to throw the ball downfield.
- 2:04:50Salvi, the tight end, was open just like he was when he made the big play the last time they threw the same pass.
- 2:04:56And he was ready to open.
- 2:04:57See if they come back to him, Jack.
- 2:04:58He was really open on the play.
- 2:04:59We get word that Mike Hagman is out with an elbow injury being x-rayed.
- 2:05:03He was hurt on the interception return.
- 2:05:05Hagman is their starting left linebacker.
- 2:05:09Guy Brown will probably be featured when the Cowboys go on defense again.
- 2:05:133.28 left in the third quarter.
- 2:05:15Cowboys leading 20 to 13.
- 2:05:18They have the ball, second and 10 at the Los Angeles 38.
- 2:05:24And Dorstet is back in there.
- 2:05:27They haven't thrown a screen in quite a while.
- 2:05:29They go into the shotgun formation.
- 2:05:31And Danny White is back to throw.
- 2:05:33He looks and throws, dumps it over the middle.
- 2:05:35It's caught down to the 30-yard line.
- 2:05:37And it's going to be third down and two as the ball was hauled in by Tony Hill.
- 2:05:41Tackled by Nolan Cromwell.
- 2:05:43Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS Radio Network.
- 2:05:48WBVM Chicago News and Sports Radio 78.
- 2:05:55I think these Cowboys can come at you from a lot of different directions if they get a Perkins.
- 2:05:59Yeah, they're using a lot more formations than they did the last time they played them on Monday Night Football.
- 2:06:03That might have been by design rather than accident.
- 2:06:05Of course they were playing catch-up football most of the time,
- 2:06:07but they're really doing a number on the Rams at this stage of the game.
- 2:06:113-2 at the Los Angeles 30.
- 2:06:13Dreier and Youngblood are the defensive ends.
- 2:06:16And here is Dallas with a little boo-boo as Drew Pearson and Billy Joe DePree started in motion before the snap of the ball.
- 2:06:24It's against Dallas in Omega 3rd and 7th at the Rams 35.
- 2:06:34Ball starts, number 64, office.
- 2:06:392-42 remaining in the third quarter, which has been dominated by the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:06:46They made a drive for a touchdown and then Aaron Mitchell intercepted and stopped the Los Angeles return drive.
- 2:06:52The Cowboys lead by 7 minutes 3rd and 7th from the Los Angeles 35.
- 2:06:57Hill and Drew Pearson come to the left.
- 2:06:59Preston Pearson is in the lineup with Dorsett to double wing, shotgun, short punt, whatever you want to call it.
- 2:07:05White weight to the snap.
- 2:07:07And he's back to throw.
- 2:07:08He throws and the Blitz is...
- 2:07:10Pete Johnson, touchdown!
- 2:07:13They beat the Blitz touchdown Dallas on the pass to Bush Johnson.
- 2:07:18Johnson beat his man.
- 2:07:22All the touchdown.
- 2:07:23Lucia Smith was on a blitz and Danny White beat him.
- 2:07:27Boy, he threw the ball exactly like he had to throw it that time, right over the top.
- 2:07:31He read the blitz.
- 2:07:32Bush Johnson went into the post.
- 2:07:34He got the ball right to him beautifully.
- 2:07:36White, you see 20 and 23 both blitzing on the play.
- 2:07:41Johnson blitzing on the play and Lucia Smith also blitzing on the play.
- 2:07:4547 man head coverage, man for man.
- 2:07:48And he caught the ball over the rookie cornerback, over Jeff Delaney, the rookie safety man.
- 2:07:55And the Cowboys now lead 26 to 13.
- 2:07:59And they'll try for the extra point with 2.36 remaining.
- 2:08:02That was a 35-yard touchdown pass play from White to Bush Johnson, his fifth touchdown of the year.
- 2:08:07The extra point is just 14-point lead for the Dallas Cowboys with 2.36 remaining in the third game.
- 2:08:14In the third quarter.
- 2:08:16Oh, this game's hard to figure at times.
- 2:08:18Listen to the crowd.
- 2:08:31Mike, what's the big difference between this game and the game we saw on December 15th when the Los Angeles went out in front 35 to nothing?
- 2:08:38Well, another one, I don't think that the Rams came into the game with the same kind of attack as they did the last time, with the idea of throwing the football as much as they did the last time.
- 2:08:47They were a lot more loose, a lot more reckless, did everything with a lot more abandon.
- 2:08:52Today they haven't played that way.
- 2:08:55The Dallas Cowboys came up with a couple of big plays, caught them in a blitz that last time.
- 2:08:59And I think any time that you blitz this, feast your famine.
- 2:09:02If you get to the quarterback as great as you don't, why can't be a big play just like happened in the last year?
- 2:09:06When the Cowboys get you in a spot like this, leading by 14, they can really play defensively.
- 2:09:11Oh, yes they can because the best thing they do is rush the passer.
- 2:09:13And now they know you have to throw the ball to get back in the ball game and it puts a lot of pressure on your offense.
- 2:09:1870 yards, six plays, 35 yard touchdown pass to Butch Johnson.
- 2:09:25And they overcame a penalty along the way and they beat a couple of Rams blitzes.
- 2:09:29The Cowboys lead by 14, but there's a long way to go in this game.
- 2:09:32Drew Hill waits for the kick from Seth Piaz. It's high, short.
- 2:09:36Hill goes over and takes it on the 11 running out to the 20 yard line.
- 2:09:40To the 25, he's tackled at the 30.
- 2:09:42The Rams go from the 30 yard line, covered downfield by Bill Rowe, the rookie linebacker for Dallas.
- 2:09:53All put down on the Rams, 30 yard line.
- 2:09:57There's 27 left in the third quarter. 64,533 in attendance.
- 2:10:04The thing you have to be careful of here at this stage of the game too, the emotional level is very high as far as the Cowboys are concerned.
- 2:10:10You make a mistake and you get yourself in trouble again.
- 2:10:13They get another easy six or seven or three and then you're really in trouble. You got to be very careful what you do.
- 2:10:18There's a toss to Thomas and he blows out across the 35 yard line and he is down at the 37.
- 2:10:26He got six yards on the carry.
- 2:10:28Tackled by Ed Jones and Bob Bruning.
- 2:10:31Eggman is out of the lineup for Dallas. Guy Brown playing the left linebacker spot.
- 2:10:41Thomas carried for six yards. Two minutes left in the third quarter.
- 2:10:46Second down and four for the Rams.
- 2:10:48Here is Cullen Bryant. Stopped hold and then he broke a tackle and got a yard.
- 2:10:54It's going to be third down coming up. Third and long too.
- 2:10:57Randy White again did a super job of getting penetration, making the bump.
- 2:11:02I should say the hit. It wasn't a bump. It was really a hit.
- 2:11:05On the running back that time, Cullen Bryant.
- 2:11:08Third down and two from their own 38 for Los Angeles. They put in the extra tight end.
- 2:11:14Wal Arnold checks in a rookie out of New Mexico.
- 2:11:18Third and two Los Angeles. They trail by 14.
- 2:11:22They knocked the Cowboys out of the playoffs last year.
- 2:11:25Cowboys trying to return the favor.
- 2:11:27Trying for the first down. Thomas hurdles to the 40 and is driven back.
- 2:11:31Now let's see what kind of forward progress they gave him.
- 2:11:35They look pretty close.
- 2:11:36Yeah, I think they're going to mark it where it's going to be very, very close or else he made the first base.
- 2:11:40Yeah, he made it, Hank.
- 2:11:41They gave him enough forward progress, just shy of the 40 yard line, to the point where he does have a first down.
- 2:11:47They're going to measure and unless the field is crooked, he made it.
- 2:11:49Guy Brown and Steve Wilson were the tacklers on the play.
- 2:11:55Either that or unless the change got them elastic in it, why they shouldn't make it.
- 2:12:01And for the Los Angeles Rams, it is the first down at their own 40 yard line with 1-0, 7 left in the third quarter.
- 2:12:08Coast season NFL action is yours to enjoy.
- 2:12:11CBS radio sports brings you the AFC and NFC divisional playoffs next weekend.
- 2:12:15Saturday and Sunday, January 3rd and 4th.
- 2:12:18Also the conference championship games on January 11th.
- 2:12:21The Super Bowl is January 25th.
- 2:12:22The Pro Bowl on February 1st.
- 2:12:24You can hear it here.
- 2:12:26First down at their own 40.
- 2:12:28Motion by Nelson, the tight end and Ferragamo back to throw.
- 2:12:32He throws and it is incomplete.
- 2:12:34He overthrew his receiver inside the Dallas 45 yard line.
- 2:12:38Billy Waddy went high, couldn't get it.
- 2:12:40He was covered by Wilson, second and 10.
- 2:12:42Yeah, Ferragamo hurried himself that time.
- 2:12:44He had the right call, went right back to the down field against the defensive back.
- 2:12:50Had he thrown the ball lower, it would have been an easy reception.
- 2:12:54But he threw it much quicker than he should have thrown it and threw it way over the top.
- 2:12:58Ed Jones, who has a bad toe, leaves the line up and Bruce Thornton, third year man out of Illinois, replaces him.
- 2:13:05That left defensive end.
- 2:13:07Second and 10 Rams from their own 40.
- 2:13:10They trail by 14 points.
- 2:13:12On the second down, the delay comes to Thomas.
- 2:13:15Trying to get outside, he gets to midfield.
- 2:13:17He is out of bounds after picking up the first down at the Dallas 48 yard line.
- 2:13:23Billy, that's the first time he's had to hand in your running room all afternoon, Jack.
- 2:13:28To the Dallas 48 and a first down with 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter and the clock stops.
- 2:13:35Ed Jones comes back in. They ran right at the position vacated by Jones a moment ago.
- 2:13:44First down Los Angeles. It's a pretty good drive.
- 2:13:47They started at their own 30. They're at the Dallas 48.
- 2:13:50Nelson will probably come in motion to the right side here.
- 2:13:53No he isn't. He's taking it right there.
- 2:13:55Here is Ferragamo's pass down field, intercepted by...incomplete.
- 2:13:59Wilson had it, Bobbilt had dropped it. Incomplete.
- 2:14:03Boy that would have done a lot for the Cowboys, but Wilson who had it in his grasp, dropped it.
- 2:14:08He intercepted one earlier today. He has five for the year, but he didn't get number six.
- 2:14:12It's second and ten.
- 2:14:13Boy he exercised bad judgment to throw the ball into that kind of a situation that time.
- 2:14:17They were double covering the outside receiver.
- 2:14:20They had no chance whatsoever to make that play work.
- 2:14:23And they were very, very lucky that it wasn't intercepted that time by Steve Wilson, number 45.
- 2:14:28Second and ten from the Dallas 48 for the Rams. Trailing 27-13.
- 2:14:3337 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
- 2:14:36Rams going from our left to our right.
- 2:14:39It's second down and Ferragamo's going to put it up.
- 2:14:41He's rushed! He avoids the rush. He throws! Incomplete.
- 2:14:46And he just threw it away in front of Gerald Thomas.
- 2:14:49First he was rushed by Randy White, and then by Harvey Martin.
- 2:14:53He got away from both, throwing complete third and ten.
- 2:14:59Third and ten at the Dallas 48.
- 2:15:02Rams were halted by an interception the last time.
- 2:15:0531 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
- 2:15:08Cowboys lead 27-13. We were tied 13 all at the half.
- 2:15:17Bernard goes to the left, along with Drew Hill, Billy Waddy. Willie Miller to the right now for Los Angeles. Waddy is out.
- 2:15:25Ferragamo on third and ten is rushed. Steps up, runs.
- 2:15:2833 is open!
- 2:15:30And it is incomplete.
- 2:15:32He didn't throw a very good ball as he tried to get it to the back at the Dallas 40.
- 2:15:37He threw it way over the head of Thomas, and it's hunting time for the Rams up fourth down.
- 2:15:43This Cowboy crowd is rooting them out, the Cowboys, on all nine games they have played in this stadium this year.
- 2:15:50And it kind of looks like they're on their way again.
- 2:15:55Now back to get the putt is Jones at his 10.
- 2:16:00And a month from Frank Corral, snapped by Dennis Harris.
- 2:16:05He'll be in the Pro Bowl in Hawaii, and February 1st we'll be there for CBS Radio.
- 2:16:11Here's the kick by Corral. It's his best of the day.
- 2:16:14High and deep, and a fair catch is called for. It bounces inside the five, and it is downed at the five by the Rams.
- 2:16:20Jones did the right thing. He stepped away from the ball, but the Rams got the bounce.
- 2:16:24What an amazing bounce that was on synthetic turf. Normally it'll go over and into the end zone.
- 2:16:29That happened twice in the game. One time for the Dallas Cowboys, and one time for the Los Angeles Rams.
- 2:16:35That putt was 46 yards by Corral, dead on the Dallas Five, with 12 seconds left in the third quarter.
- 2:16:43Jeff Delaney is still in there. Pat Thomas is out, Rod Perry is out.
- 2:16:49Both cornerbacks are absent. Leroy Urban and Jeff Delaney are back there with Cromwell and Johnson.
- 2:16:56Now the Cowboys, leading by 14, have to make sure they hang on to the ball.
- 2:17:01They have Dorcent newhouse. Dawes playing the right defensive end in place of Dreier.
- 2:17:07And a double tight end.
- 2:17:10On first down, they give to Dorcent. He's hit and he lost a yard on the play.
- 2:17:15Reynolds, the middle linebacker, blowing in there and knocked him off his feet.
- 2:17:18And that'll mark the end of the third quarter. Second and 11 from their own four for the Cowboys when we come back.
- 2:17:24That's the end of the third quarter with a score. Dallas 27, the Rams 13.
- 2:17:30Jack Reynolds was shaken up on that last tackle, but he stays in there.
- 2:17:39And Rod Perry comes back in on the right corner for the Rams, and that will help Los Angeles.
- 2:17:43Yeah, that's very encouraging, I'm sure, for the Los Angeles Rams.
- 2:17:46First down, Dallas has 19. The Rams 13.
- 2:17:51Rushing 172 to 80. Dallas has the edge there. Passing, white 11 out of 24.
- 2:17:57179 yards, three interceptions. Marigammo, 12 out of 27. 48 yards, that's all.
- 2:18:03And two intercepts. Eight penalties against Dallas, four against the Rams.
- 2:18:07Dallas has had to punt only twice. Six punts for the Rams today.
- 2:18:14Second down and 11 from their four, and here's a give to the tailback Dorcent out to the ten.
- 2:18:19He comes out to the 14-yard line, making his third down and a yard and a half.
- 2:18:25Leroy Irvin tackled him, and that was a big play for the Cowboys.
- 2:18:28Yes it was, and a left tackle. Pat Donovan, Herbert Scott, the left guard, really did a good job of coming off the ball that time and knocking them off the line of scrimmage.
- 2:18:37They're both pro bowlers, Pat Donovan and Herb Scott, and it shows you how strong they are on the left side.
- 2:18:42Dorcent to the 14.
- 2:18:47Third down and a yard.
- 2:18:50This crowd, 64,000 plus, wants the Cowboys to get the first down.
- 2:18:55Timmy Newsom is in there with Dorcent, there in the high formation.
- 2:18:58Saldy on a wing. They give to Dorcent, almost fumbled, gets the first down out to the 20.
- 2:19:02He's out to the 25, to the 28, fumbled, got it back.
- 2:19:06Dorcent fumbled, almost fumbled, did fumble, got it back, but he has the first down of the Dallas 29.
- 2:19:12Isn't it amazing how many times people have an opportunity to fall into football, they don't do it correctly.
- 2:19:17The Rams should have had possession of the football that time, they did not fall into the ball.
- 2:19:21It bounced right back into the ball carrier's hands, Dorcent, I think, and they have possession first and 10.
- 2:19:31First down of their own 29.
- 2:19:39The Rams have been shut out here in the second half.
- 2:19:42We have 13-25 left in the game.
- 2:19:45James Jones runs, springs in the backfield. Here is a toss to Timmy Newsom.
- 2:19:51Timmy Newsom comes out to the 40-yard line and beyond the first down, out to the 43, and the Cowboys are ripping him up now.
- 2:19:57They get right that time, the middle linebacker was blitzing, he went to the right side, to the open side of the field.
- 2:20:03They ran to the opposite direction, there was no pursuit from the inside, from the middle linebacker.
- 2:20:07For that reason, they were able to make another big gain on the play.
- 2:20:1014 yards by Timmy Newsom, the rookie out of Winston-Salem State under 12.50 left in the game.
- 2:20:24Cowboys leading 27-13.
- 2:20:28They have come from their own five-yard line, out to their 44.
- 2:20:33And they'll be doing nothing crazy here.
- 2:20:36Staying on the ground, they give the ball to the tailback Dorsett following Newhouse, and he has really blasted down by Mike Fanning.
- 2:20:44Dorsett should be a little slow on getting up, but he got down to his 49-yard line and picked up five yards. What a whack he took.
- 2:20:50Boy, Fanning really responded well to that run and got a good shot on Dorsett, number 79, the defensive right tackle.
- 2:20:58Second down and five, and the old clock is killing the Rams now.
- 2:21:04Twelve minutes left.
- 2:21:07Second down and five for the Cowboys.
- 2:21:11Dorsett and Newhouse, you'll see the tight end.
- 2:21:14Newhouse, he gets Jarnett down to the 45. He gets down to the 41-yard line and another first down for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:21:24Newhouse did a good job of reading the block that time. He started inside, broke to the outside, popped through the hole,
- 2:21:30and picked up the yardage. Beautiful job of running on the part of Newhouse.
- 2:21:35Eleven-twenty-nine remaining in the game.
- 2:21:39...
- 2:21:43Cowboys have had the ball the outset of this fourth quarter, and they've kept the ball for almost, well, they've kept it for more than four minutes.
- 2:21:51They have now 23 first downs and a first down at the Ram 41.
- 2:21:56They're showing a lot of character here today. Dorsett running left is in trouble, cuts back, and he gets to the 40-yard line and works very hard to pick up one yard.
- 2:22:06...
- 2:22:08Holding against the Cowboys.
- 2:22:13Dallas holding. And the Rams will accept the penalty to slow down this Dallas running game. They've just been chewing up the clock and the yards and protecting their 27-13 lead.
- 2:22:30A big third quarter for the Dallas Cowboys with two touchdowns.
- 2:22:34...
- 2:22:38And he's had 87 as J. Saldy, the tight end, who is holding.
- 2:22:43Ball is at the Dallas 49. First and 20.
- 2:22:49Rod Perry is on the corner along with Leroy Irvin for the Rams with Cromwell and Johnson, the safety men.
- 2:22:56Here's a toss to Timmy Newsom. He tries to get outside, breaks the tackle, gets to the 45, gets to the 40, to the 35, got big yard.
- 2:23:04Very close for a first down. It's got to be second and two on a big run by Timmy Newsom, his second of the day.
- 2:23:11Jim Youngblood tackles it.
- 2:23:13He didn't understand why he ran over a couple of people there. Jack, he's 6'1", 227, a rookie from Winston-Salem State, and he did a super job of running on the last play.
- 2:23:21Even though it was first and 20, the Cowboys stayed on the ground and they picked up 18 yards on that run by Timmy Newsom.
- 2:23:27They're going to continue to run the ball. They're doing a good job of knocking them off the line of scrimmage and they're going to try to take as much time as they possibly can and they're doing a good job of it right now.
- 2:23:36Dallas has kept the ball for more than five minutes. They have a 14-point lead.
- 2:23:46And here is a give to the tailback door set. He gets to the 30. He picked up a couple.
- 2:23:52There's James Jones in there and he got a couple.
- 2:23:59Door set is carried for 132 yards and he comes back in.
- 2:24:04They have a good many more running backs than the Rams have.
- 2:24:08That's another first down.
- 2:24:11The Los Angeles 30-yard line.
- 2:24:14And that offensive line of the Cowboys is sparkling now.
- 2:24:17Yeah, they really are. Pat Donovan, Scott Shaw, Rafferty and Cooper are really doing a good job of knocking them off the football at this stage of the game.
- 2:24:249-22 left in the game.
- 2:24:26Cowboys leading 27-13. First down at the Los Angeles 30. Tony Dorsett to the 25, to the 20.
- 2:24:32He's down to the 15. He's down to the 10. He's down to the 7 and stops there.
- 2:24:37First and goal. Dallas door set tackled by Irvin and Andrew.
- 2:24:43And the Rams are poof.
- 2:24:45They really are. They're dying on the vine. You can look at the way they're walking around, bolting around after that kind of a run.
- 2:24:51They are really demoralized, it looks like.
- 2:24:54With 8-52 left in this game.
- 2:24:58First and goal for the Cowboys from the 7-yard line. They are really taking it to the Rams now.
- 2:25:05Nolan Cromwell had a chance to make the tackle. You don't see that happen very often, but he missed.
- 2:25:10Dallas overcame a holding flaw on this drive and they have first and goal. They have two tight ends.
- 2:25:15Cosby and Dupree, first and goal from the 7.
- 2:25:18Shaw the center.
- 2:25:20Springs in the backfield with Dorsett. The snap. White's going to throw.
- 2:25:24He is sacked back at the 15 yard line.
- 2:25:26And the ball came loose, but the play was dead. And Jack Youngblood got him.
- 2:25:30Came roaring in there as he beat Cooper the tackle.
- 2:25:33And he brought him down.
- 2:25:36Why would they do that, Hank?
- 2:25:38Why did they put it up after running at the length of the field? The flag is down.
- 2:25:42They had a bump and run on the outside and they thought they could get the ball outside for a big play and get one into the end zone.
- 2:25:46It was worth a try. It was a good play.
- 2:25:48Except they didn't block it.
- 2:25:50Guess wrong on the play.
- 2:25:51The ball is at the 7 first and goal. The flag has been thrown and yardage marked off against the Cowboys.
- 2:25:56Back to the 12.
- 2:25:59Delay of game.
- 2:26:00Delay of game. So the play did not count.
- 2:26:05Delay of game back to the 12. So the sack did not count.
- 2:26:09First and goal from the 12.
- 2:26:11Ten penalties against Dallas.
- 2:26:17At the Los Angeles 12.
- 2:26:198.21 left in the game.
- 2:26:21Boy, they kept the ball for a long time.
- 2:26:23Almost seven minutes.
- 2:26:25Look at that middle.
- 2:26:27Look at the middle.
- 2:26:28You might be changing the play.
- 2:26:30Here is White giving the ball to Dorsett.
- 2:26:32And he is spun down at the 11.
- 2:26:33He gained only a yard.
- 2:26:35Big Mike Fanning latched on to him.
- 2:26:37But.
- 2:26:39Time is way against the Rams now.
- 2:26:42Trial by 14.
- 2:26:43We're coming up on the 8 minute mark left in the game.
- 2:26:45So they have kept the ball.
- 2:26:47At this moment.
- 2:26:48Seven minutes and 12 seconds.
- 2:26:50And they still have it.
- 2:26:51The ball is at the 11.
- 2:26:56They have plenty of time remaining on the 32nd clock as the Cowboys come out.
- 2:27:017.45 remaining.
- 2:27:03Cowboys leading 27-13.
- 2:27:05At the Rams 11.
- 2:27:06Second and goal.
- 2:27:08White.
- 2:27:09Motion by Drew Pearson.
- 2:27:11Back to throw.
- 2:27:12Rolls right.
- 2:27:13Looks.
- 2:27:14He could run.
- 2:27:15He throws.
- 2:27:16Touchdown to Drew Pearson.
- 2:27:18Who whips the ball into the stands.
- 2:27:20Another touchdown for Dallas.
- 2:27:2211 yard touchdown.
- 2:27:24Last play.
- 2:27:25With the rookie Leroy Irvin on the corner.
- 2:27:28Drew Pearson.
- 2:27:35With the all time leading.
- 2:27:39Cowboy receiver having surpassed the record of Bob Hayes.
- 2:27:42Runs the score to 33.
- 2:27:4513.
- 2:27:477.31 remaining in the game.
- 2:27:49The Yankee will try the extra points.
- 2:27:5633-13.
- 2:27:58Dallas by 20.
- 2:28:02Wait for the snap.
- 2:28:03The Charlie Waters will get it down.
- 2:28:05And now it is a 21 point lead for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:28:0934-13.
- 2:28:12Looks like they go to Atlanta.
- 2:28:15In the game next Sunday in Minnesota.
- 2:28:17We'll go to Philadelphia next Saturday.
- 2:28:20Looks like it.
- 2:28:21With the score.
- 2:28:23The Dallas Cowboys 34, the Rams 13.

- 2:29:23Dallas kicking off with 70 and Drew Hill, the deep man for the Rams.
- 2:29:32With 731 remaining in the game.
- 2:29:34A deep kick into the end zone.
- 2:29:35Hill takes it from three yards deep and runs right to the 10 to the 15.
- 2:29:39Outside of the 20.
- 2:29:41And he is pumped out of bounds.
- 2:29:42At about the 22.
- 2:29:43What a drive that was by the Cowboys.
- 2:29:45Thank you.
- 2:29:46They started from their own five, at 95 yards, 11 plays, 7 minutes and 41 seconds as they kept the ball.
- 2:29:53Yeah, it's pretty incredible that you get a team in trouble like that, to have them on the four or five yard line.
- 2:29:57And they're able to go 95 yards and consume that much time.
- 2:30:01It's a great compliment to the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:30:03And, but a real surprise.
- 2:30:05You don't think they'd be able to do that.
- 2:30:07Dorsetta set a new Cowboy playoff record with 156 yards, surpassing the old record held by Dwayne Thomas.
- 2:30:14From their 22, Ferragamo with no choice but to throw his back to throw.
- 2:30:18He throws and it is caught by Thomas out near the 28 yard line.
- 2:30:22And he has dropped a substantial game for the Rams, but no first down.
- 2:30:26The ball is to the Los Angeles 28.
- 2:30:33And an injured player.
- 2:30:35Thomas, the rookie running back out of San Jose State has shown the ability to catch the ball.
- 2:30:45Doug France, the offensive tackle, has shaken up, has to leave.
- 2:30:48Irv Hankey comes in, a rookie out of Penn State.
- 2:30:527.06 left.
- 2:30:57And we have a timeout. 7.06 left.
- 2:30:59Timeout on the field with a score.

- 2:32:03Second and four for the Rams.
- 2:32:06A delay to Colin Bryant comes across the 30 out to the 32 and has the first down for Los Angeles.
- 2:32:11Packled by White and Martin.
- 2:32:14The Cowboys are giving all of those they want, Hank.
- 2:32:16Yeah, that's what they want.
- 2:32:17They want them to take as much time and travel slowly, take as much time on the clock, and that's exactly what they're giving them.
- 2:32:24The Tigers down for the Rams at their own 32.
- 2:32:27Doug France injured earlier back in there.
- 2:32:29625 left in the game.
- 2:32:31Cowboys leading 34 to 13.
- 2:32:35Garagamo, the quarterback.
- 2:32:38And the poor man right.
- 2:32:40He's back to throw, steps up, he's back into 25 yard line.
- 2:32:46Back at the 25 yard line, Randy White, Bruce Sparks, put the pressure on.
- 2:32:53Lost the seven yards.
- 2:32:56Hank, you don't have to have a lot of guts to say that the Cowboys have won this game.
- 2:33:01They lead by 21 points with six minutes left in the game.
- 2:33:05Yeah, I think we can go way out in the limps.
- 2:33:07Way out in the limps, Jack, and say they're going to win this football game unless a miracle occurs between now and the time the six minutes to last.
- 2:33:14Ball is at the Los Angeles.
- 2:33:1621, second down and 16.
- 2:33:19They stay on the ground and the running play to the 30, to the 35, to the 40 with Cullen Bryant.
- 2:33:24Ryan Tackle at the 40 by Larry Cole.
- 2:33:31And it is going to be third down to, you know, on the December 15th, the Rams beat the Cowboys 38 to 14.
- 2:33:43And now, the Cowboys lead 34 to 13.
- 2:33:47You explain that to me.
- 2:33:49Crazy game, isn't it?
- 2:33:51Third and two for the Rams.
- 2:33:53Barragallo, the quarterback, is going to put it up.
- 2:33:56He throws short. It's caught by Thomas. Has the first down out of the 47 yard line of Los Angeles, tackled by Mitchell and a flag goes down.
- 2:34:06And we have a holding call.
- 2:34:09It's something against the Rams.
- 2:34:17506 left in the game.
- 2:34:21Mike Higman has a dislocated elbow, so the starting left linebacker for the Rams, for the Cowboys.
- 2:34:27He won't be there for the Atlanta game next Sunday either.
- 2:34:32New playoff record for Charlie Dorsey. He's rushed for 156 yards, breaking Dwayne Thomas' record.
- 2:34:39Set against San Francisco back in 1971.
- 2:34:43The Rams were holding.
- 2:34:46And it's third down and 13 from their 30 yard line.
- 2:34:53Barragallo to put it up, a four-man rush.
- 2:34:56Barragallo steps up and draws, and it's caught by Dennard to midfield in a first down as he goes out of bounds at the Dallas 49.
- 2:35:04These Rams can do some things, but they haven't done enough.
- 2:35:07Five minutes exactly left in the game.
- 2:35:13To the Dallas 49 in a first down, exactly five minutes remaining in the game.
- 2:35:18Cowboys leading 34-13. They'll play at Atlanta next Sunday.
- 2:35:23That'll be the second game.
- 2:35:25Meanwhile, the Rams are out and Minnesota will play in Philadelphia next Saturday in the early game, 12-15 Eastern Time on CBS Radio.
- 2:35:37The Rams trying to keep the drive going. Barragallo about to pass. He throws long into very heavy coverage, and it is intercepted.
- 2:35:44Intercepted at the five by Dexter Clinkdale, the rookie, his first of the year.
- 2:35:49He's out of South Carolina State, and Barragallo just threw a jump ball down there.
- 2:35:55That's all it was yesterday.
- 2:35:57Anybody close to making that catch for the Los Angeles Rams?
- 2:36:004.51 left in the game.
- 2:36:02Cowboys have the ball at their own six on the interception by Dexter Clinkscale.
- 2:36:06And that against Barragallo is the third interception of the day.
- 2:36:10With a score, the Cowboys 34 in the Rams 13. Let's take time out.
- 2:36:14Standard 4.1 liter V6. Available 3.8 liter turbocharged V6. 5.0 liter V8 or 5.7 liter diesel V8. Front wheel drive.

- 2:36:32And Riviera's list of comforts and conveniences is, we submit, practically endless.
- 2:36:36The incredible 1981 Buick Riviera. The kitchen sink not available.

- 2:36:44Monday, high flying comedy and suspense on CBS television as Freebie and the Bean go after drug smugglers in the sky.
- 2:36:50I got plenty of sources over the border and a foolproof delivery system.
- 2:36:54When a pretty pilot bails out at 10,000 feet, it's time for Freebie to learn how to fly.
- 2:36:58Now what's going on? What are you doing with my airplane?
- 2:37:01I'm gonna get a citation for this, Bean. Trust me.
- 2:37:03What's that?
- 2:37:04Pull it out! Give it some power!
- 2:37:06Freebie and the Bean, a special night, Monday at 8, 7 Central Mountain on CBS television.
- 2:37:14Fox, the Houston Adult Club broadcast with Lindsay Nelson and Jim Kelly here on CBS radio will commence one minute after we're finished down here at Texas Stadium, where the Cowboys lead 34 to 13.
- 2:37:25Dallas has the ball at their own six.
- 2:37:29Don't forget we'll have the cotton ball at 2 o'clock Eastern time Thursday, New Year's Day here on CBS radio.
- 2:37:34Taylor and Alabama.
- 2:37:38White shifts his ball club into the eye, gives to the tailback, door set, starts one way, cuts back, comes out to the 10, got four.
- 2:37:47Door set for the four yard run.
- 2:37:53Coming up on four and a half minutes remaining in this game and the Rams can't do anything about their plight. They are finished for the year.
- 2:38:01They had an 11 and 5 record during the season.
- 2:38:06And now we have an injured player being tended to.
- 2:38:09With four and a half minutes exactly left in the game, Rod Perry is injured again for Los Angeles.
- 2:38:16Rod Perry of the Rams walks off injured.
- 2:38:19He'll need some of that Hawaiian sunshine on February 1st when he's there for the Pro Bowl.
- 2:38:23Hank, he's a good football player.
- 2:38:24Yes, he certainly is. And it's amazing the way the Dallas Cowboys dominated the second half. It was 13-13 at halftime and then three scores by the Dallas Cowboys in the third quarter.
- 2:38:34And I think the big thing really was when they took the ball in a 37 yard line and went 63 yards, door set going 10 yards for the touchdown.
- 2:38:43That kind of sets the stage for the second half and it hasn't changed one bit since that particular time.
- 2:38:51Danny White is still the quarterback. The ball is at the Dallas 10.
- 2:38:56Second down and six.
- 2:38:59Jones in the backfield with Newhouse. They shift, split back.
- 2:39:03Second down. The give is to Newhouse trying to get outside, cuts it back and picked up to maybe three yards, four minutes left.
- 2:39:10Now less than that. The tackle made by Mike Fanning.
- 2:39:16Newhouse sees the ball marked down at his 13 yard line.
- 2:39:2213-3.
- 2:39:26Rams not anxious to stop the clock. We're down to 3.35 remaining.
- 2:39:32Cowboys leading by 21 points, 34 to 13.
- 2:39:36As Hank mentioned, it was tied at the half. 13-all so the Rams have been shut out in the second half.
- 2:39:41Well, you can almost see it happening.
- 2:39:45There's a toss to door set running left tire to Jones trying for the first down and he gets it.
- 2:39:50Out to the 20 yard line, James Jones.
- 2:39:53They have a lot of fresh bags and it makes a difference.
- 2:39:56It certainly does and the offensive line, as I mentioned before, are really doing a good job of knocking the Lions off the line of scrimmage.
- 2:40:04For that reason, they've got some scenes to run into and they're taking advantage of what they see.
- 2:40:09Hank, 26 first downs for Dallas.
- 2:40:12Well, that's really something, isn't it?
- 2:40:14If we talk about a turnaround, it's hard to explain as we talked about a minute ago.
- 2:40:182.45 left in the game.
- 2:40:21Cowboys at their own 20 now with a first down.
- 2:40:27They have Jones and Newhouse in there.
- 2:40:30Shaw at the center.
- 2:40:32Saldy's a tight end and here comes Jones again.
- 2:40:35He is not down until he comes to the 25 yard line.
- 2:40:38He got five.
- 2:40:41Time back at that time, Jack Reynolds made the tackle or else he'd have been going for a larger game than that.
- 2:40:46And now we'll have the two minute warning before we have anything else because the Cowboys want the clock to run down.
- 2:40:51The Rams don't want to stop it.
- 2:40:53Don't forget later on, Houston at Oakland with Lindsey Nelson and Jim Kelly.
- 2:40:58We have exactly two minutes left in this game.
- 2:41:00A timeout on the field with a score.
- 2:41:02The Cowboys 34 and the Rams 13.
- 2:41:07We're here at Pencil, Tufo, Chevy City interviewing one of the more interesting monsters to make those monster deals on Chevy cars and trucks.
- 2:41:14Today it's Zomar Zircon, the eight foot tall green monster from the planet Zircon.
- 2:41:18He works in the used car department.
- 2:41:20Zomar, what brought you to Chicago land?
- 2:41:22I could not get a good deal on a used car on the planet Zircon.
- 2:41:27So you left your home planet and galaxy and traveled many light years searching and searching until your spaceship came to rest in the Chevy City used car lot
- 2:41:35where you became first a customer and eventually a member of the Monster Sales Team.
- 2:41:39That is correct.
- 2:41:40Chevy City has the best selection and prices in the universe.
- 2:41:44How do you like sports in general and the Chicago Bears football team?
- 2:41:48The Bears are peachy keen and I play nose guard on the Chevy City team.
- 2:41:53Peachy keen?
- 2:41:54Well, it takes all kinds.
- 2:41:55Folks, that's Zomar Zircon, one of the monster dealers at Pencil, Tufo, Chevy City, North Avenue just west of Route 53 in Glendale Heights.
- 2:42:02Saturday, Minnesota will play at Philadelphia at 12.30 Eastern Time.
- 2:42:10We'll be on the air at 12.15 on CBS radio next Saturday.
- 2:42:14And then Sunday, the 4th, Dallas will play in Atlanta on the air at 3.45 for that 4 o'clock Eastern Time game.
- 2:42:21Well, there'll be some good running backs on display in the Dallas-Atlanta game with Andrews and Kane over there with the Falcons.
- 2:42:26Yeah, they're ready to go after each other.
- 2:42:28I haven't seen Atlanta play all year long, so, and we still won't see them play next week.
- 2:42:34So we might not see them until Super Bowl time if they go that far.
- 2:42:38Here is another first down play and John Brickson out to the 40-yard line.
- 2:42:42He's not tackled until he came across the 45 out to the 47 with another Dallas first down.
- 2:42:48He's piling up some yards.
- 2:42:50Urban made the tackle.
- 2:42:53To the Dallas 47.
- 2:42:56What a blow through there.
- 2:42:58It's amazing the way the Dallas Cowboys have run against the Los Angeles Rams.
- 2:43:04They've really, really done a super job.
- 2:43:07If the Rams weren't worn out at the outset of the game, they are now.
- 2:43:12Meanwhile, an advantage for those other clubs sitting for the action next weekend.
- 2:43:15They're well rested.
- 2:43:16A minute and 20 left in the game.
- 2:43:18Another first down for Dallas out to their 47.
- 2:43:21They lead 34-13.
- 2:43:24And on first down.
- 2:43:26There is a handoff by White to Jones again, but nothing knowing this time.
- 2:43:33He was hit right at the line of scrimmage.
- 2:43:35No game.
- 2:43:37How much time is left?
- 2:43:3855 seconds.
- 2:43:40Another player too, and this one will be over.
- 2:43:42The Rams will be out.
- 2:43:43The Cowboys will play at Atlanta.
- 2:43:44That means Minnesota will play at Philadelphia next Saturday.
- 2:43:4927 first downs for Dallas in this game.
- 2:43:54Out of the 64,000 have departed the scene.
- 2:44:01Cowboys will have to run only one more play.
- 2:44:03It's second down and nine.
- 2:44:05They'll just snap the ball and White will do something very conservative.
- 2:44:09He tosses the ball and running with the ball is coming, breaking it down into 30.
- 2:44:15Down to the 25.
- 2:44:16He stays in bounds.
- 2:44:19He is tackled at the 19, and that will be the final play of the game.
- 2:44:23It will be another Dallas first down, giving them 28 first downs in the game and a victory in this wildcard playoff game over the Rams.
- 2:44:3224-13.
- 2:44:34The end of the game between the Cowboys and the Rams.
- 2:44:36The final score of Dallas 34, the Rams 13.
