- 0:00And we indeed are live at Bear Smoke Cow's Barbecue for another edition of the
- 0:04Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. Coach Mike Kavanaugh is with me. And who's this
- 0:08guy in the end? I hadn't seen it in a while, the House
- 0:10Hunter star at the House Hunter Star. That's right, the big TV star
- 0:14Adam Jardino is back with us after a lot of football duties. He'll be
- 0:18back with me Friday at BC. Thank god, I've been sick of talking
- 0:22to myself. As we sit here, talk to Yukon Hockey for the next
- 0:25hour. We'll also visit with Hudson Shandor, one of the two captains of
- 0:29the Huskies, and one of the alternate captains who's on a tear right now,
- 0:32Andrew Lucas, the defenceman from Alexandria, Virginia. First of all,
- 0:35CAF, good to see you once again. How you doing. Nice to
- 0:37see you, Bob. I'm doing well. Thanks, and I imagine the
- 0:40bus ride with home from Merrimack was pretty nice after what took place over the
- 0:45weekend. Getting a good split over a good Merrimack team. Well, it
- 0:48was certainly nice in the fact that we won, but I was still pretty
- 0:55I guess disappointed. I thought that was a weekend where we had a chance
- 0:59to win two games and we didn't give ourselves a chance Friday when we were
- 1:04self destructed. So that was still bothering me even Saturday night after the game.
- 1:10Yeah, games like that can get to you. I don't know what
- 1:12was said in the locker room, and that what stays in the locker room.
- 1:15You know what said stays. But it seems like from at least a
- 1:19player's perspective, the effort was substantially better on Saturday, and maybe message received
- 1:23well. The effort was pretty good up until eight minutes left in the third
- 1:27period on Friday night. I don't think Merrimack had a shot on net in
- 1:32the third period up until that point. And then, as I said,
- 1:37we you know, you took the five minute major. And it was more
- 1:41of a technique issue with Tristan on that penalty. It wasn't, you know,
- 1:47a selfish penalty or dirty penalty. It was just his technique was off.
- 1:53He's wound up going east west and he was all in on a hit
- 1:56and the kid moved a little bit and it was needed and there was no
- 2:00arguing in it, and I had no issue with the referees call of the
- 2:04league suspending him. I think it's a play that he was just maybe a
- 2:07little reckless as opposed to, you know, a dirty penalty. But either
- 2:13way, we almost had that thing killed. And even though they scored,
- 2:16you know, there's still three minutes left in the game. I mean,
- 2:19last year we had tied Providence up, you know, scoring two goals in
- 2:23the last three minutes, yeah, in a game, and this year we
- 2:27scored three goals in a minute, you know, the week before. So
- 2:31for us to take those penalties at the end and not give ourselves a chance
- 2:35to get back in the game, that's what was really frustrating. Rewinding the
- 2:38tape to the end of that second period. It was three to three going
- 2:40into the final minute, you were on the kill again and Merrimack scored what
- 2:45was eventually the game winner, but a go ahead goal with one point nine
- 2:49seconds to go in the period. So what is what did you perceive from
- 2:53the team heading into the locker room for that second intermission, because I'm sure
- 2:57that it's deflating, it just flat out obviously it's not a great way to
- 3:00go into the locker room. But we were fine we came out and played
- 3:04really well. As I said, they didn't have a shot on net I
- 3:07don't think in the first ten minutes. So we were playing really well and
- 3:12up until the point where we took the five minute major. Mike, I
- 3:15brought up a point second period. I think early second shots were like eight
- 3:19to nine to nothing early. I mean, you were really putting it on
- 3:21here. And I thought of something that you brought up with me with Ethan
- 3:24Hyder earlier in the season. There was a period I think maybe it was
- 3:29the Union game where you had thirty shots on goal in the first period and
- 3:31I think maybe he saw five, and we talked about that mental toughness to
- 3:35stay focused and in the game. And unfortunately second period, on the very
- 3:38first shot of the second period, puckets buy our Sindy, Sir Jev and
- 3:42then it was a downhill from there for him as he got pulled. But
- 3:46what's it, what's that mindset like for him? What's his mindset right now
- 3:50after the disappointment of Friday. No, I think it's just he's a competitor.
- 3:53He'll get back to work and you know, I think work on his
- 3:57process and he does, you know, Vince STILLETI does an outstanding job with
- 4:00our goaltenders, and he was on the ice with ur Sinny this morning working
- 4:05on just setting his feet and controlling his rebounds and just all details and aspects
- 4:13that go into being a solid goaltender. And it's fundamentals. A lot of
- 4:16times, you know, he makes those spectacular saves every now and then.
- 4:20But the goaltenders that are consistently and you know ninety two save percentage are the
- 4:27ones that are fundamentally sound. Right when you talk about Vince working with them
- 4:31with our Sinny, have you seen Ethan be able to pass some wisdom along
- 4:38as the elder statesman of that tandem. They certainly have a pretty good relationship.
- 4:42You know, I'm not necessarily you know, see that all or hear
- 4:48all their conversations together, but they do have a great relationship. All three
- 4:53of our goaltenders do, right, Mike, You got Andrew Lucas going on
- 4:58a hot tear right now, I mean, got the game winner low then
- 5:00he has scored that power play goal at Vermont and the four to one loss
- 5:04late in the game, but he has snowball. Then he's been aggressive picking
- 5:08his spots. I mean the goal he scored Friday was gorgeous, and then
- 5:12right place, right time for the game winner Saturday. Yeah, it was
- 5:15a great goal Saturday that you know what was really Tyler Helton brought this up.
- 5:19It was impressive. Was right before that goal was scored, they called
- 5:25us for icing, and I think they missed the call one. I think
- 5:28it went off our guys stick. But nonetheless, we were going to get
- 5:30to that puck first, so that I think the call should have been nullified.
- 5:35It shouldn't have been icing. But the kids nobody whined or complained about
- 5:41it. It was like, all right, we gotta go get defensive zone
- 5:43draw. Let's go make sure we get this draw. And we did.
- 5:46Chipped it out and then Samuel and Perceval won the race and that's what started
- 5:51the offensive zone play and it culminated with Andrew finishing it bar down. Yeah,
- 5:59and Andrew talk about that later as a Jake gave him a nice pass
- 6:01and Huskies win at four to three. Hey, look, Dan Connelly's here,
- 6:04nice Patriots at that's the old path, the Patriot logo. I like
- 6:08that. He's everywhere. He is everywhere. He wasn't Raleigh though he watched
- 6:12that game. I know that because I didn't see him there anyhow, we'll
- 6:15take a break later. Andrew Lucas and Hudson Shander will join us on the
- 6:18Yukon Hockey Coaches Show Bar with Cavin A moment you're listening from Bears Barbecue on
- 6:23Learfield. Stayless,
