- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.

- 0:27Our current series is A Mysterious Business, bringing
- 0:31ministry and marketplace wisdom together.
- 0:34Back when I worked at a mortgage company,
- 0:37there was a moment between a senior manager
- 0:39and a new hire that I'll never forget.
- 0:41The senior manager was explaining something related to
- 0:44company policy or interactions with another business.
- 0:48I forget exactly what, but he interrupted himself
- 0:49and said to the new hire, do you
- 0:51know the golden rule?
- 0:53And it's not the one you learned in
- 0:54Sunday school.
- 0:55And I forget what the new hire said,
- 0:57but the manager went on to explain, he
- 1:00who has the gold makes the rules.
- 1:03Now I found this exchange, as brief as
- 1:06it was, so disturbing for a couple of
- 1:11reasons.
- 1:11One is that the statement, he who has
- 1:13the gold makes the rules, is itself a
- 1:14pretty cynical take on life and business.
- 1:17Kind of defies the idea that there might
- 1:18be a rule of law that applies to
- 1:20everyone equally regardless of wealth or status.
- 1:23And of course, it's good to be savvy
- 1:26to how often people with wealth can make
- 1:29their own rules and skirt accountability and things
- 1:31like that.
- 1:31But I would say that's a bug, not
- 1:34a feature.
- 1:34Exalting that insight about how often people with
- 1:37wealth can get away with things to the
- 1:38status of a golden rule, it's like, is
- 1:42that really the way we want to frame
- 1:43reality?
- 1:44But the second reason I found it so
- 1:46deeply disturbing is that the senior manager who
- 1:50said this was a Christian.
- 1:51And I knew him, I knew his faith,
- 1:53I knew his faith was genuine.
- 1:54And yet the way he said, it's not
- 1:57the one you learned at Sunday school.
- 1:58You kind of got this vibe that he's
- 2:00like, oh, you learned some nice things in
- 2:02Sunday school, some important things.
- 2:03But now we're going to tell you how
- 2:04the world really works.
- 2:05Now we're going to tell you what business
- 2:07life is really like.
- 2:08Here's the real golden rule.
- 2:10He who has the gold makes the rules.
- 2:13And it was so disturbing to me because
- 2:14I realized that this man, this businessman, even
- 2:18though he was a Christian, he did not
- 2:21see how he was letting the business world,
- 2:25the business culture of our nation, disciple him
- 2:29more strongly than he was letting Jesus disciple
- 2:33him.
- 2:34The idea that any Christian could say, oh,
- 2:36here's a golden rule you might've learned in
- 2:38Sunday school, but here's the real golden rule.
- 2:40What does that say about your attitude toward
- 2:42Jesus, the one who said what we call
- 2:44the golden rule?
- 2:46It says you think Jesus is nice, but
- 2:48maybe not very smart, that Jesus gives you
- 2:51some good values, but he doesn't really tell
- 2:53you how the world really works.
- 2:54And if that's your attitude towards Jesus, how
- 2:57can you really become his disciple?
- 2:59How can you live in reality as a
- 3:02disciple of Jesus, unless you are persuaded that
- 3:05Jesus knows best, that Jesus knows the way
- 3:08the world really works and that his teachings
- 3:10express the most fundamental truths about reality.
- 3:15So as we're kind of wrapping up this
- 3:17series about bringing ministry and marketplace wisdom together,
- 3:22I want to talk about the ways that
- 3:24that relationship can be really fraught, the ways
- 3:27that sometimes business culture and church culture intersect
- 3:30in unhealthy ways, ways that are unhealthy for
- 3:32both business and church.
- 3:34And then I want to look at, is
- 3:36there a way that's better?
- 3:38Is there a way that as disciples of
- 3:40Jesus, we can have a wholly healthy vision
- 3:43of life in the church and life in
- 3:45the business world that really does reflect the
- 3:48golden rule, that really does reflect what Jesus
- 3:50taught, do to others as you would have
- 3:53them do to you.
- 3:55I think there is, I think there's a
- 3:56way forward.
- 3:57But first, before I dig into all of
- 4:00that, I want to do a teacherly thing,
- 4:02which is to review.
- 4:03Since this is the last episode in the
- 4:06series, I want to review some of the
- 4:08kind of salient points that we covered.
- 4:10So this series was a mix of me
- 4:13just talking into the microphone, but then also
- 4:14some really wonderful interviews.
- 4:16So some of the points that I shared
- 4:18were this idea of a mysterious business, the
- 4:22idea that business can contain the mystery of
- 4:25God's presence in Jesus Christ.
- 4:27Or as Dallas Willard said, that business is
- 4:30a fundamental structure of love in the kingdom
- 4:32of God, that there's a structure there, something
- 4:35that contains the deeper substance of God's reality,
- 4:40his life and his love.
- 4:42And we see this taught in the Bible
- 4:44itself, like in Proverbs 31, that woman who
- 4:47works with her hands with pleasure, she takes
- 4:49joy in the work she's doing as a
- 4:51business person in her community in a way
- 4:53that blesses the whole community.
- 4:55So business at its best is this structure
- 4:58that contains the living life, the presence of
- 5:02God and expresses God's love for people in
- 5:05the community in very concrete ways.
- 5:09We looked at how there's some concepts from
- 5:12the business world that can kind of help
- 5:14us think about how we do our work
- 5:16as Christians, whether we're in a quote, unquote,
- 5:17secular context or in a ministry or church
- 5:20context.
- 5:20So this idea of like the five dysfunctions
- 5:22of a team from Pat Linceone, that trust
- 5:25actually leads to healthy conflict, which then leads
- 5:27to commitment.
- 5:28And if we're struggling with commitment towards something
- 5:30in our life with God, well, maybe we
- 5:32need to have some healthy conflict with God.
- 5:34Maybe we need to trust God enough to
- 5:35engage that conflict and then to that will
- 5:37lead to deeper commitment to God's way in
- 5:40our life.
- 5:40We talked about this idea of lead measures
- 5:42versus lag measures, which is often used in
- 5:44the business world when, when something fails, don't
- 5:47just look at the outcomes.
- 5:48Also look at, well, what were the lead
- 5:49measures?
- 5:49What were the things you did ahead of
- 5:51time that you had direct control over that
- 5:54maybe didn't lead to the outcome you had
- 5:56hoped for and yet how as Christians we
- 5:59should have a multi-generational view of lead
- 6:02measures and lag measures that as Jesus said,
- 6:05I sent you to reap that which you
- 6:06did not labor on, that we might have
- 6:09really great lag measures, right?
- 6:11A harvest, impressive results that actually doesn't really
- 6:14have that much to do with our effort.
- 6:15It has to do with the efforts of
- 6:16people in previous generations and their faithfulness to
- 6:19God.
- 6:19Or similarly, we might be faithfully putting in
- 6:22some lead measures of showing up where God
- 6:25has asked us to show up, of doing
- 6:26our darndest to make sure that things become
- 6:29what they're supposed to be in a given
- 6:31ministry or work context.
- 6:32And the results might not be very impressive,
- 6:34but that might be because the results are
- 6:37going to come in a subsequent generation.
- 6:39And so what matters is faithfulness, still being
- 6:41honest about how outcomes look and whether there's
- 6:44any way we can adjust what we're doing
- 6:46to, to foster greater fruitfulness, but trusting that
- 6:49God's purposes will carry the day even beyond
- 6:52what visible results we can measure.
- 6:55Speaking of measurement, one of the ideas we
- 6:58talked about is that we can't always measure
- 7:00everything that counts in our life with God.
- 7:02We looked at, uh, Sky Jitani's book, Immeasurable.
- 7:05And this idea that even in the business
- 7:08world, right?
- 7:08Like Ed Catmull of Pixar said this, you
- 7:10can't actually measure everything, but you want to
- 7:13measure what you can.
- 7:14You want to pay attention to the numbers
- 7:16so that you can treasure that kind of
- 7:18immeasurable heart of what the business is really
- 7:21about, right?
- 7:22That numbers can't ever fully capture what business
- 7:26is about because business is about love, business
- 7:28is about what's happening in a community.
- 7:31And yet the numbers matter.
- 7:33And so we want to measure, but not
- 7:35trust the numbers to trust the presence of
- 7:38God who brings about immeasurable and mysterious things
- 7:41in our midst, even in the business world,
- 7:43we talked about this idea of sacramental work
- 7:46that God gets things done through humble everyday
- 7:49stuff.
- 7:50And just like he does that literally through
- 7:52the sacraments, like baptism and the Eucharist, he
- 7:53can also do it through our everyday work.
- 7:55He can make our work, a conduit of
- 7:57his grace, someplace where his life and love
- 8:00is made known in the world.
- 8:03Similarly, we talked about how, as we deal
- 8:06with new tools that exist in the working
- 8:08world, like AI, we need to maintain that
- 8:10vision of God's life and love through human
- 8:13persons being what work is all about and
- 8:17not let a new technology displace the purpose
- 8:20of work.
- 8:21So we want to think about what it
- 8:23means to keep pace with God and with
- 8:25other people in our work that we can't
- 8:27just choose efficiency above all else.
- 8:30Even if AI might help us do that,
- 8:32we need to think about limits that might
- 8:34be placed on our work in order to
- 8:35honor human dignity, just like in the gleaning
- 8:37law and the Torah.
- 8:38And Pope Leo helped us kind of look
- 8:40into that with his encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, where
- 8:44he talked about the true transhumanism being participation
- 8:47in the divine nature.
- 8:48As people kind of look at AI as
- 8:50this thing that will bring in change in
- 8:52the future, they might be underestimating the power
- 8:54of human sin.
- 8:55Both individually and culturally to, to continue things
- 8:59like poverty and injustice and disease.
- 9:02New technology by itself is not going to
- 9:04help us overcome all these things.
- 9:05What we need is the grace of God.
- 9:07And we can become more than human in
- 9:10the sense of participating in the divine life
- 9:12by grace, because of Jesus Christ, that's what
- 9:15we need to focus on.
- 9:16And that can break through in our everyday
- 9:19work.
- 9:19So we talked about how, uh, when we're
- 9:22using AI just in practical ways, we probably
- 9:24shouldn't use it for writing.
- 9:26I mean, I kind of made that case
- 9:27that both for developmental reasons, as we're becoming
- 9:29human beings who communicate, we use AI at
- 9:32our peril because we might not learn how
- 9:34to write well.
- 9:35Uh, but also it changes the purpose, the
- 9:38meaning of communication among persons, when you throw
- 9:40a machine in the middle there, uh, in
- 9:41a way that I think is, is unhealthy
- 9:43for most work applications.
- 9:46We talked about character change and how, uh,
- 9:48in our culture, we've lost the language of
- 9:50character.
- 9:51But that's part of what God does is
- 9:53he, he transforms character.
- 9:55That's part of his life and love coming.
- 9:56And that, that true more than humanity is
- 9:58our character being transformed.
- 10:01And because of that, we should have an
- 10:03attitude like Pete Leonard of I have a
- 10:05bean coffee that somebody's record.
- 10:07Isn't the only thing you see about them,
- 10:09but that you can see what their character
- 10:10is like today.
- 10:11It's like Pete Leonard says to post prison
- 10:13people, uh, have you been to prison and
- 10:15are you living differently now than you were
- 10:18then, and he hires people into his company
- 10:20to make great coffee.
- 10:22Okay.
- 10:23Pete Leonard is one of those business leaders
- 10:25we looked at.
- 10:26So we also got to see other wonderful
- 10:28examples of business leaders living this out, like
- 10:30Eddie Smith jr.
- 10:31Who's putting a Grady white boats into a
- 10:34perpetual purpose trust instead of selling it for
- 10:36$400 million.
- 10:38Uh, we got to interview Joe Slawek of
- 10:41flavors of North America, who literally put Bibles
- 10:44in the foundation of the building that they
- 10:46built for that business.
- 10:47We got to talk with Alyssa Krause, who
- 10:48uses massage therapy as a kind of healing
- 10:51ministry in a for-profit business context.
- 10:53And similarly, Ben Andrews doing therapy.
- 10:56And even though he never intended to be
- 10:58an entrepreneur, finding that starting a business was
- 11:01the way for him to love and serve
- 11:03both his clients and his family, because he
- 11:06needed to pay the bills.
- 11:07So he needed that structure of the business.
- 11:09And he realized that it was possible for
- 11:11him to do that.
- 11:12And he would say to others who might
- 11:13be kind of unintentional entrepreneurs.
- 11:15Yes, you can do this.
- 11:16You can use business as a way to
- 11:18love other people.
- 11:19We got to talk with Tim cool.
- 11:21Um, who talks about, uh, how, uh, business
- 11:24facilities are tools, um, how their assets of
- 11:27ministry, um, and how in, in his own
- 11:31work, he's trying to help churches understand that.
- 11:33But then also in, in his business, the
- 11:35way he runs it, he's trying to practice
- 11:37this structure of love by doing profit sharing,
- 11:40by being generous in the community with the
- 11:41profits that they make that he views profit,
- 11:43not as an end in itself, but as
- 11:45a mean student, as a fuel that helps
- 11:47the machine of the business run.
- 11:50We had a couple other interviews in there
- 11:51too, not with business leaders, but with others
- 11:53speaking about business, like Justin Mertis, uh, from
- 11:56made to flourish, talking about the scatter tool
- 11:58and trying to help pastors ask the question,
- 12:01does the average person see themselves as part
- 12:03of God's story?
- 12:04Um, and those kind of this time tomorrow
- 12:07interviews that they do at his church, where
- 12:08somebody, an average worker from the congregation will
- 12:11share what they're doing this time tomorrow and
- 12:13how that's part of their life with God.
- 12:14We talked with Bonnie Christian recently about how
- 12:17business is part of public life.
- 12:18And sometimes that might have a point of
- 12:20tension with public policy, but more often we
- 12:23might just kind of feel awkward about our
- 12:24faith, but Bonnie saying we don't need to
- 12:25be ashamed about our faith.
- 12:27We don't need to be ashamed for those
- 12:28of us from this tradition about being evangelicals,
- 12:30but we can be winsome and bold and
- 12:32confident knowing what's going on in our churches
- 12:35in general is of the Lord.
- 12:37It's a good thing.
- 12:38Um, even as we're very honest about the
- 12:40flaws that need to be corrected and that
- 12:42the sins that need to be repented of.
- 12:45Okay.
- 12:46So that's our review.
- 12:48Those are some kind of like the ideas
- 12:49that we talked about in this series and
- 12:51some of the interviews that we did and
- 12:53the people we talked to, I hope some
- 12:54of this has been helpful for you in
- 12:56terms of thinking through what does it mean
- 12:58for you to steward that mystery, mystery of
- 13:04God's presence.
- 13:05So on that note, as we conclude a
- 13:08mysterious business, I want to focus on the
- 13:11mystery of God's presence and how that's so
- 13:13important to keep front and center, even in
- 13:15the business world.
- 13:17Uh, so the unusual take that I want
- 13:19to make here is that the church can
- 13:22be a business school.
- 13:23The church can be a business school.
- 13:25Now I don't mean for the how of
- 13:27business.
- 13:28I don't mean in a traditional sense that
- 13:29like you should go to church to get
- 13:30an MBA.
- 13:31Um, although maybe there are some churches out
- 13:33there that do something like that.
- 13:34Uh, what I mean is that the church
- 13:36is a business school for the why of
- 13:38business.
- 13:39A lot of young women, a lot of
- 13:41young men go and get MBAs at business
- 13:43schools all over the world.
- 13:44And they learn a lot about the how
- 13:46of business, but they don't ever learn about
- 13:48the why.
- 13:49They come away knowing how to get things
- 13:51done, but often doing it for very poor
- 13:53reasons with, with visions that might not be
- 13:55any more noble than simply making a lot
- 13:57of money.
- 13:58And they don't have that sense of that
- 14:00end.
- 14:01Um, that, that, yeah, profit is good.
- 14:03If it's a means to a good end,
- 14:05if it's a way to love others, if
- 14:08it's a way to love the community, but
- 14:10unless you have that, why, what's the point
- 14:13of the business that you're doing?
- 14:15So I think that the church can be
- 14:17a business school for the why of business.
- 14:19And in a couple of different ways, one
- 14:21is we can think about the church as
- 14:23a community.
- 14:24So the church includes a lot of business
- 14:27people, a lot of business people who love
- 14:29the Lord Jesus, who are members of the
- 14:31church, a great way to learn what it
- 14:34looks like to follow Jesus is to watch
- 14:37someone who loves Jesus run a business.
- 14:39You can learn lessons about life and business
- 14:42from the Christians.
- 14:44Like we've had a chance to do in
- 14:45this series, look at people like Joe, look
- 14:48at people like Tim, look at people like
- 14:50Alyssa, look at people like Eddie Smith, Jr.
- 14:52And learn from them.
- 14:54What does it mean to love Jesus?
- 14:55As you run a business, you can catch
- 14:58the why of business from others who have
- 15:01already gone on that journey in the church.
- 15:03So in that sense, church can be a
- 15:05business school, but then also even church as
- 15:09institution, right?
- 15:10Like Sunday morning church, the, the things that
- 15:12we do in the structure of the church,
- 15:13uh, the local church, that can also be
- 15:16a business school for the why of business
- 15:18in the sense that the local church at
- 15:21its best bears the mystery of God's presence.
- 15:26When you participate in the institutional local church,
- 15:29when you go to church on Sunday, when
- 15:30you listen to preaching, when you hear the
- 15:32word of God, when you partake in the
- 15:33sacraments, when you submit to institutional authority in
- 15:36the, in the form of elders and deacons,
- 15:38and depending on your tradition, bishops or apostles,
- 15:41you are participating in the community that bears
- 15:47the mystery of God's presence in the world.
- 15:51And that is so important because as you
- 15:54listen, as you pay attention to the mystery
- 15:57of God's presence in the world, that will
- 15:59shape how you do business.
- 16:02That will shape how you do your everyday
- 16:03work, regardless of whether it's in a business
- 16:05context or a nonprofit context or, or some
- 16:08other kind of unpaid work.
- 16:10And I have this quote, I found it
- 16:12in Sky Jatani's book, Immeasurable, uh, which we
- 16:15quoted earlier.
- 16:15Um, but it's from Richard Halverson, who was
- 16:18a former chaplain of the United States Senate,
- 16:20and he once said this, in the beginning,
- 16:24the church was a fellowship of men and
- 16:26women centered on the living Christ.
- 16:29Then the church moved to Greece where it
- 16:30became a philosophy.
- 16:32Then it moved to Rome where it became
- 16:33an institution.
- 16:35Next it moved to Europe where it became
- 16:36a culture.
- 16:37And finally it moved to America where it
- 16:40became an enterprise.
- 16:43Do you see what Richard Halverson is saying?
- 16:45He's saying the original vision of the church
- 16:47is a fellowship of men and women centered
- 16:49on the living Christ, the mystery of Christ,
- 16:51the mystery of God's presence right there in
- 16:53the community.
- 16:54But then what the church tends to do
- 16:56is to be shaped by the culture around
- 16:58it and become like the culture around it,
- 17:00regardless of what that culture is.
- 17:02So in Greece, it's a philosophy, in Rome
- 17:04it's an institution, in Europe it's a culture,
- 17:06and in America, it's an enterprise.
- 17:09So we, we run this risk in both
- 17:12business life and church life of letting the
- 17:15business culture around us tell us what success
- 17:19means.
- 17:20We run the risk of letting what, what
- 17:23Sky Jotani calls church ink take over.
- 17:25Thinking about success in business terms without reference
- 17:31to the mystery of Christ.
- 17:33In other words, we can get a bad
- 17:34why for business life and for church life
- 17:37that deforms us.
- 17:39So often in the business culture that surrounds
- 17:42us, what's prized is measurable results and profit,
- 17:46measurable results and profit.
- 17:47Can we measure all the business deals we
- 17:49did this year?
- 17:50Can we put numbers on everything we accomplished
- 17:52and how much money did we make?
- 17:54That's success.
- 17:55And when you take that mentality and you
- 17:57apply it to church, you get that buildings,
- 17:59butts and bucks model of church.
- 18:01How big are our buildings?
- 18:02How many people are in them?
- 18:03How much money are they giving?
- 18:04And if that becomes your definition of success,
- 18:06then church gets deformed.
- 18:07Right.
- 18:08But, but it's not just church that gets
- 18:09deformed.
- 18:10Running a business like that is also deformed
- 18:12because the essence of business cannot be captured
- 18:15in a bottom line.
- 18:15The way that business is a structure of
- 18:17love has to go beyond that.
- 18:20And so this is why church is a
- 18:21business school.
- 18:21As you go to church and when that
- 18:24church is stewarding the mystery of God's presence
- 18:26faithfully, you learn that that's what matters.
- 18:28And that gives you a why, not just
- 18:30for church life, but also for business life.
- 18:33That what ultimately most deeply matters about business
- 18:36is does this business convey the presence of
- 18:39God in the world?
- 18:41Does this business communicate God's love?
- 18:45And if so, that is the why.
- 18:46And then you apply all of your savvy
- 18:48how as best as you can to be
- 18:49a profitable business that serves that why of
- 18:52love in the community.
- 18:54So at its best, a mysterious business is
- 18:58a business that has learned the mystery of
- 19:00Christ, the mystery of God's presence from the
- 19:02church.
- 19:03Church is a business school.
- 19:05It's a place to learn the why for
- 19:06business and for life.
- 19:09So I want to conclude with just a
- 19:11kind of a commissioning prayer.
- 19:12This is from Paul's epistle to the Corinthians
- 19:17chapter 16.
- 19:18And as we think about the true golden
- 19:20rule, right?
- 19:21Do unto others as you would have them
- 19:22do unto you.
- 19:23I love this line that Paul ends on
- 19:25do everything in love, everything.
- 19:27It means do your business in love.
- 19:29Do your for-profit work in love.
- 19:30Do your nonprofit work in love.
- 19:31Do your unpaid work in love.
- 19:32Do everything in love.
- 19:34That's not just a nice statement.
- 19:36That is a statement conveying the deep truth
- 19:39of reality that we have access to in
- 19:41Jesus Christ.
- 19:42The mystery of the age is revealed in
- 19:44Christ that it is possible to live in
- 19:48God's presence in participation in his nature, living
- 19:51life of love for him.
- 19:52And for others.
- 19:53So with these words, we conclude our series.
- 19:57First Corinthians chapter 16, starting in verse 13,
- 20:01be on your guard.
- 20:04Stand firm in the faith.
