- 0:56[SPEAKER_01]: Cory and crew.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_04]: Cori and Zech are interesting because they don't have on the safety.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_04]: So it kind of tells you upper management.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_04]: Does it?
- 1:06[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_03]: upper management.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_04]: Wow.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_04]: And they said that Zech has a secretary.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_04]: Ooh.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_04]: And so that in the other guys.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_04]: And I've seen some of the other guys out on the job.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_04]: And I've stopped and talked to them.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_03]: I know you do.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, it's a work concrete.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: You did.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_01]: Also, I'm shout out to Anderson Ford, 27 to I.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: 18, 30, 30, and they drive on concrete.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: They do.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: So they work together really cohesive there.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_03]: They're here and we thank them for coming to the mill and joining us.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_03]: Nice of those guys.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_04]: Very nice.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_04]: We'll have some spirited conversation with them.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_04]: All the time.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, Jake's playing golf now with court.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: I wish I said I couldn't I wanted to I just I can't say I'm not able I got to be dead that day.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you do.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: Mom's out of town parents out of town me.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, so that's gonna be interesting.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_04]: We should stop by and see the weather.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's passionate.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, come on.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: We have to get me in Scotland hanging out together.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: Just us too.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, well, it's not going to be off put if me and Bill showed us.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, she'd probably be hanging out pretty much at ease.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I was there for the earthy process.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, she'd be not at ease with me.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_04]: No, not at ease.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: We are joining the game field as we at tomorrow starts fall camp from Nebraska.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's obviously starting all around comfortable, but the man, the guru, the legend, Phil Steel joins this field in morning.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: I have to ask you off the bat.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: I have to assume making the magazine, the last couple of years has been impossible with the transfer portal and I, as it been truly impossible for you, Phil.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: The previous three years were a nightmare having to deal with that second transfer portal window and then having a rewrite 138 teams on the month of May and this year I talked to 133 of the 138 coaches out there.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: uh... and get all those calls in the month made it was her horrific this year no second transfer portal window i'd say every co-chair talk to a bit call and say hey fill how you do an expected me to say hey good co-chair myself i would say co-chair i'm doing great there's no second transfer portal window uh... to rewrite a hundred thirty eight teams in a month of uh... may
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: And you know what the coaches came back with, almost to a man.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: They almost said, Phil, we were more of a team this spring.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: The guys we were took into spring practice.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: We knew with the guys we were going to take into the fall.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: We could coach him harder.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: We could list him third string.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: And we knew they weren't going to transfer into players.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't have to worry about getting replaced.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think we're going to see a better brand of football this year.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_03]: feel steel joins us.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_03]: My name is Steve.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_03]: My question is, how long do you talk to these coaches on average?
- 3:34[SPEAKER_03]: You get pretty long conversations with head coaches of each school.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_03]: How long?
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: The average would probably come out to about an hour.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: What I do is I send over my team sheets and they have every player on them.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: and all my notes on every player and every stand on every player and a send them over to them and I say to the coach okay coach put me in order and tell me little some about the players are going to see the field this year and go over every player on the roster and they take they take a long time and that's uh... you know some calls uh... i i think i've had calls at last maybe thirty minutes sometimes but some last close to two hours depending on uh... i i i i know talking to coach Mike leech from Texas Tech
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: 2 hours and 45 minutes as he's walking the beach we would we'd get about an hour and 15 minutes of football conversation in there and and the rest of it would be other conversation interesting
- 4:28[SPEAKER_04]: Bill Bush, 97, the ticket.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_04]: I'm verclimped right now.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_04]: This is incredible.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_04]: My fandom of you is unbelievable.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_04]: I buy two every year of the magazines.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_04]: I get them at Barnes and Noble.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_04]: And so I get two of the magazine.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_04]: One goes me.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_04]: One goes to dad.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to show off your skill set here a little bit if we could San Jose State go.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the San Jose State's second year or third year for neumatololo, and you know, they lost a lot in the transfer portal this year, including their quarterback, who is a late food, while the Walker Eagle left for the ACC, was a late signing to Duke who needed a quarterback all of a sudden.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: And last year, they were an experienced team, they disappointed.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: This year, when you look at San Jose State, they're an inexperienced team.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: But keep in mind,
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: you know when I talked to him at Navy each year he talked he was one of those two hour coaches for a while there when I talked to him his first year at San Jose he was like fill I I don't know these guys haven't seen them and they actually had a surprising year they finished seven and six that year last year's three and nine was disappointing so my expectations are low they only have three returning starters this year but I did one remember that neama
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're gonna have a rebuilding year, but we'll see in the long run how it shakes out.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_04]: I have a question about a simple disease.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_04]: That's amazing to handle.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_04]: God, I filled and not know the team I was throwing now.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_03]: No, and he just nailed it.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_03]: He, he doesn't know this one.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, I gotta question about another obscure team, Nebraska.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: No, Nebraska.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: Let me know now.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: You caught me off guard.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that I did.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you got to prep me a little bit.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: No, you know the thing the thing I like about Nebraska this year guys is the quarterback situation I think that with three mobile quarterbacks like they have with clandery of the teeth and cankelin
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: They're in pretty good shape there and you can run your quarter back more knowing that you've got a good back that you don't have to change your offense for.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: Now with Latif, remember he came in and did great against UCLA.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: and then he played Penn State Iowa and Utah's defenses.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: Those are three really tough defenses and things then go well.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think it would be much better in a second year with Calandria.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know what really to expect for him.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: I've saw him when he was at Virginia, but you and I'll be last year.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: This guy was a playmaker, especially in the fourth quarter, dangerous with the legs.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: and then with Kayla and remember he transferred to Virginia was competing for the starting quarterback job last year.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: He's back.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I think they've got good depth of quarterback.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, the biggest question is who's going to replace him at Johnson?
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a Johnson in the early 1500 yards last year.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think there'd be more of a running back by committee.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: You're looking at Nelson, Mozi, rural, you know, what your model rules, you guys, looks like a home run hitter yet that 78 yard touchdown run in the spring game.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: you'll get a receiving core with Barney and Hunter back.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: I like the tight ends with Linda Meyer, the offensive line.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if they picked up two big transfers, one from LSU on Palma Benga and another one last year from Arkansas and Richard, both of those guys are in a folk caliber.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: They've got Justin Evans back at centers.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: They're in good shape there.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think defensive line, you don't have any stars, you have a lot of bodies.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they have any super stars on the defensive line.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: Linebackers, I'd really like to pick up a vote in Chambliss at Linebacker.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: This guy was dominant San Diego State over a hundred tackles last year.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: four and a half sacks and then the secondary looks good now the schedule is going to be tough.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean let's make some hay in the first five games.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think Nebraska can't start five and oh and as you know Nebraska tends to weaken a little bit down the stretch and that probably happened again this year.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_00]: Look at their playing in the second half of the year.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: Indiana at home to be a dog at Oregon.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: There'll be a dog there.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: The Washington game is big at home.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: That might get him at his six.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: Then at Illinois, there'll be a slight dog.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: They do play at Rutgers.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's winnable.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: Then they finish off with Ohio State and at Iowa on a Friday.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: Now Nebraska and you guys comment, help me here.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: When's the last time you'd be to ranked team?
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: You guys have the year off the day.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: We have a win.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_03]: 2016.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_03]: 2016.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_03]: September of 2016.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: I am going to call for them to beat a ranked team this year, and if that happens, then I think they top last year, seven went total, and the key is going to be a running back emerging and a defensive line, maybe to get a star or two, but I think with the more mobile quarterback and a Dana Holgerson offense, and I'm a big Matt Roll fan, I got to be honest with you, and I know last year was disappointing, seven and three and three blocks, then out the year, but I'm a Matt Roll fan, I think he's going to do well.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_03]: real quick question before the guys have a lot here.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_03]: I, how long was your conversation?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_03]: Was rule on the long side of your, you know, when you interview coaches, was he, how was your interview with Coach rule?
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: Not over now or no.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, not over now.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_03]: I would have expected it to be but anyway This is an example.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_04]: We're we're a sports show fill in right now.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_04]: You're kind of in Embarrassing us.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but with your knowledge Right right right.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_04]: There's more about Nebraska than I do.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_04]: Yes It's certain to me right off that concerns us a lot go ahead Jake
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm just curious which one of my Phil steel, of course, the legendary magazine.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: The college won't pre-bound.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm kidding.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: But for Nebraska, you mentioned that you think they get to get to eight wins and they get when their first game over ranked team in 10 years.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: We're trying to find excitement with this team.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think in the program, I think the fans are, they might, they like Kalandra, but it's hard to believe in this team to take that next step.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: What is the best chance for them to take the next step?
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: What needs to happen for that fill this season?
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think knock off a ranked team and improve the record this year and you've got to start five and all and I think the five and all start I've got a favorite by at least a touch on all five games.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: Michigan State I think is in a rebuilding mode Maryland not going to be easy to get a lot of players back from last year they've got a pretty good quarterback as well but Nebraska gets that one at home which is big and the North Dakota Bullying Green and Ohio I think all fall into the winnable category.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think knock it off a ranked team.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I've been really looking at the season that Washington game is big.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: Washington's really good this year.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if you look at the top of the big 10, you've got the big boys, the top three Ohio State Indiana Oregon, then I think you've got four teams that fall into that.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, these guys are possible playoff contenders and we're talking about USC, Michigan, Penn State, and Washington for a myriad of reasons, some due to schedule, some due to the talent that they have.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: So Washington's going to come in.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be highly ranked.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: They may only have one loss at that point and they're going to be considered a playoff contender.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big, big game at home.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: Both teams off a buy.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think of Nebraska wins that one.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: That'll be the ranked team that they beat right there.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Then I think he gained some confidence for the rest of the year.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it might be a little bit of a letdown spot.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_00]: The next week at Illinois and Brett Bielam always does a great job there.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think that Washington game if I was going to circle one game for Nebraska to really make this season and give them hope for the end of the year, it would probably be the Washington game.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_04]: Fill.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_04]: I enjoy you every done on Saturday.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_04]: I know you're doing two hours next week on Channel 84 and I'd love listen to you again this
- 11:47[SPEAKER_04]: but that big drop on Friday, late Friday afternoon on the Protect College Sports Act and and all of a sudden the big tin and the SEC jumping on board and agreeing to everything.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_04]: Just tell us your take on how big this is and we know it's not past yet but just what is your overall take and why do you think this came together so quickly when it said it was basically dead for the previous week?
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: So much needed for college football because the NCAA had basically lost all its power I mean every time a player wanted to play They told a lawsuit they beat the NCAA they had no power whatsoever if Congress passes this on all of a sudden You can actually have rules and college football all my goodness We have actually rules that you have to abide to then I think it's gonna be huge for college football So pretty pretty happy if that thing passes
- 12:37[SPEAKER_03]: Are you happy to see USC Notre Dame rivalry renewed?
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm all over.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm rivalry guy.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Nebraska, Oklahoma, we've got to get that thing going back together again.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: But thank you.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: With with USC, they're a team this year that I think is a legitimate playoff contender.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: No one I talked to Lincoln Riley and went over the roster with them.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: He said that the defense is the best he's had in his five years there.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: They had Gary Patterson as the defense coordinator that has a pretty dog on good defense of mind.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: Offensive that I got Jade May ever looks like he could be a first round draft pick.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: Last year they lost their top three running backs to injury.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: They had to go with a walk on a King Miller.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: King Miller at nearly a thousand yards, a good women Jordan back, King Miller.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_00]: They had in a couple of VHT true frosts in Sean Austin and to Sean Redu and then you
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: the receiving court Lincoln Riley always develops receiving court they're young but you'll know their names at the end of the year and then when you look at the schedule they host Oregon and they host Ohio State they were seven and oh and home last year if they pull off one of those two wins I think they've got a great shot of making a playoff and for Lincoln Riley sake I hope he does make the playoff because they're getting a bit of pressure there at USC
- 13:52[SPEAKER_03]: Is this the year fill that the SEC retains its rightful place atop the college football world with the national champion?
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if that's how you grade the top conferences by the national champ, then I don't know if they're going to get there this year.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: They could.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: I've got Georgia playing in the SEC title game.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think Kirby Smarts got one of his better teams here.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: They are actually under the radar for how loaded they are.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, uh, here's a tip for you guys.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: If you're looking for a dark horse Heisman candidate to start of the year right now.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_00]: Gunner Stockton's 20 to 1 odds for crying out loud.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: This is a guy that places best in big games.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: He is a 16 to 2 ratio against ranked teams.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: He's great enough for it now.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: Great in the fourth quarter.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: He's got an outstanding offensive line of run game around them.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: one of the best tight-end quarters in the country, a top-notch defense, I think Georgia competes for a national title, and that would settle, put stocked in up there, especially he shows big and some big games, but this year I actually went with the Notre Dame fighting Irish.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: And when you look at Notre Dame, when you look at Notre Dame, when you look at Notre Dame,
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: you know I'm a defense of guy and last year they held opponents to 95 yards for game below their average this year they got nine starters back on defense by number five rated defense of line number one linebackers number one DBs they're loaded best defense in the country now I'm also on the Joe Warlord committee
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: one of the twenty one award committees among and that you're more are in the offensive line I read number one in the country they've got four NFL candidates on the offensive line we're starting back they've got a veteran quarterback and c.j.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: car they do lose love in price of running back but they've got so much talent of running back with that offensive line I think they'll emerge and then you look at the schedule unlike Nebraska we talked about Nebraska's final seven games
- 15:40[SPEAKER_00]: I'm favorite in all 12 games.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think they run the table, they're able to play some backups, get healthy for the season.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe they're biggest obstacle might be overcoming that by week as we know in the two years that they've had the by week, a team sitting out three, four weeks versus a team that played last week.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: Only one coach coach should netty has been able to overcome the by week.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: It teams are one and seven after a by.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: If he can overcome the by week, which I think he will, I think the
- 16:07[SPEAKER_04]: Fill 12 teams or 24 teams playoffs go.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_00]: 12.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: If it's a yes, thank you.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: We agree.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_04]: We talked yesterday and we didn't.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: We just we just cannot get the 24 you know in the FCS our member a three year period.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you guys follow the FCS play us at all But there was a three year period where the third place team in the division in the colonial conference was playing for the title because they were the healthiest team at the end of the year Remember two years ago Notre Dame played Ohio State for the national championship, but
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: they were down their top office alignment and their top defense alignment.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: They probably would have been a much better game at the penalty.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: Let's not have these teams play five, six games and a playoff and see who's the healthiest at the end of the year.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: Let's have the best team want to see the health.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_04]: That makes total.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_04]: Wow, a little different take on this.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_04]: Phil, how many times do you just say to yourself Indiana just won the National Champion?
- 17:02[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, you're history in this.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, how, I'm, we're, we go over to the depth that it's still, I don't think it really, I still have a wrap my arms around it.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_04]: Just tell us what's like from it from a pro like yourself covering college football.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_04]: What it was like to see Indiana win the
- 17:17[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I thought one of the greatest head coaching jobs in college football, and I was honored that I used to get to talk to him was Bill Snyder, Kansas State.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_00]: Kansas State was the drags of college football.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody went to their games.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: They were on the verge of dropping down the FCS or at that time, D2, and no one there.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_00]: You're playing in Manhattan, Kansas, how do you even recruit players?
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: And then all of a sudden, Bill Snyder had him contending for a national title.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: almost on a yearly basis for a couple of years there.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: I thought you did a remarkable job.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: Guess what?
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: They have Kurt Signetti trumped that.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's remarkable.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going back to my first conversation with Coach Signetti.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: He was at James Madison.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: and James Benson was coming up from FCS to FBS.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_00]: So my first call to coach Signadium like, well, you're losing an all conference quarterback.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: You have no experience at the quarterback position coach.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: And you're taking a jump from the FCS to the FBS.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_00]: So we struggle a little bit of quarterback this year.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, Phil.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_00]: I've had for all conference quarterback every year I've been ahead coach.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: We'll have one this year.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: And guess what?
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: They had one that year.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_00]: So now every time he says something like that, I listen.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: And he remember when he said when he took the job at Indiana with that speech at the basketball game.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: He always looked out Ohio State, look out Michigan, we're coming for you.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: He is a remarkable head coach and I think having the Mark Cuban money there helped him a little bit.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: And in this he's a great recruiter and you know coaches that I talked to, we generally don't talk about other coaches, but a couple times I'll talk to them about.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: uh... acquiring town evaluating personnel for the transfers and a couple post coaches pointed out well signities the best at it signities the best at it so uh... i mean and he's the only coach to overcome a by-week for current allowed so i never thought i'd see in the end of win a national day guys i gotta ask you
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: Did you ever think Indiana had that many fans where they could take over stadium?
- 19:07[SPEAKER_04]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
- 19:31[SPEAKER_01]: Trump, I feel steel.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I speak to Indiana.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, Menosa goes there.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: He's the number one pick in the draft last year of Josh Hoover comes from TCU.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: How do you like that Fed at TCU at Indiana?
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: Which core is like better going there?
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: It meant those last year or who for this year to Indiana?
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's easy question.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'll take Mendoza.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, to get one of the highs from the remarkable year.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't actually going there.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: Those are my point.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: No, he did not.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, hindsight's 2020, but he going back to my first conversation with Coach Signetti.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: And then this year when I talked to him going over the roster, he said that Hoover's in the same spot, Mendoza was coming out of spring.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: So I liked that.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: And you're looking at a quarterback that's thrown for nearly 10,000 yards in this career.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_00]: So we actually have a more established career than Mendoza had coming in.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_00]: uh... and he's not gonna have to try to win the games like he did a teach you they've got the run game with turbo-richard kobi martin lee bb and if you followed uh... uh... coach dignity you know they always develops a cell run game they have the offensive line as well in fact every indiana the number three offensive line the country not only do they have charlie backer back a wide receiver and what a great finish he had last year for being thrown in line up
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: But they had Nick Marsh from Michigan State and you know Nick Marsh sort of underused a Michigan State because it didn't have great quarterback play I think he'll have outstanding season this year So they've got the offense.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think Hoover is going to do just fine In fact the end of the year when surprised me if he's in the high-spin mix, so it's a perfect fit Especially when you look at subbeddy in his history at quarterback's defensively they're solid and when you look at any and the season they sure guys
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have an underdog in any games.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: The only game I have a toss up is Ohio State at home.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: I've got that one rated even.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: They do have to play Michigan the very next week, so it's a top two game stretch.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_00]: Butternata, I think Indiana has a great shot at repeating it in the big ten this year.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_03]: I've felt you mentioned Georgia as a kind of a dark horse national.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_03]: It's something something some a team that people aren't talking about much.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_03]: Who else could be considered a dark horse national title threat?
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I wouldn't say George is a dark horse though.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_00]: They've been picked to win the SEC this year and they'll be, and when you look at the first ranking, they'll be in the top five.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: So what I do every year, guys, is in February.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: I go through and I do all my analysis and I say, okay, here are the preseason AP top 10 teams.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: These 10 teams will be in the AP top 10 now.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: I've only had a 95% success rate.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: There's been seven times in the last 15 years.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_00]: where I missed by one team, but I'm pretty confident that 95's are sick.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: That's pretty good.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty good.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: No, that's a number of filters so you know.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: And 95.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_00]: And anyway, so what I do at that point is I eliminate those 10 teams.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think you can't be a surprise team, you know, if you're in that, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 22:23[SPEAKER_00]: And so this year, I was like, okay, who was my number one surprised team?
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually a team that was picked six the NSEC this year.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: Alabama and I think, well, Alabama, but look how Alabama finished last year.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_00]: They got blown out by George and the SEC title game, blown out by Indiana.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: They couldn't run the football and also they lose their quarterback, tie Simpson and first round draft pick.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, what's the like about Alabama?
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing, what I like.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: is killing to borrow their first third year now third year.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: This is finally his team.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_00]: Remember to do dive in.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_00]: I got to be asked with you.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't take the head coaching job following Nick Saben because you're, how can you win?
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 23:00[SPEAKER_00]: You can win national titles and they'll still say, well you're not Nick Saben.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: But he took that job, he's a confident guy, and here's his record against ranked teams.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: How about 20 wins and just six losses?
- 23:11[SPEAKER_00]: This guy does his best in big games.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's got two really good quarterbacks in Keylon Russell and Austin Mack.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care which one wins a job.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_00]: I like them both.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_00]: They both have there.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_00]: plus his key line Russell is one of the top quarterbacks at high school dangerous runner awesome max been in the system for four years he was at Washington with their offense coordinator Ryan grew up when they were playing for the national title so either one's good you look at the offensive line of running back
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: They're good enough.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_00]: They'll have a run game this year.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_00]: They've got Ryan Coleman Williams back who is off last year.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't like 11 drops last year.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a chip on his shoulder and the defense is solid.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: And when I look at the schedule, I got him favorite in nine.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: I got three toss-up games.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have an underdog in any game.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: They get George at home.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_00]: They beat George on the road last year, and they also play App Tennessee and at LSU.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: Alabama's my number one surprise team.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_00]: I've got USC up there though too.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_00]: I've got USC up there's like my number.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think three surprise team this year So these are teams that nobody's talking about not even in the top 10 probably not in the top 15 at the start of the year I think they have a shot of making a playoff and once you make the playoff as we saw with Miami You got a shot of winning all Phil, who do you have in the group of six to make the playoffs?
- 24:22[SPEAKER_04]: Who would be who would be the team you're looking at that question to make a run?
- 24:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, naturally I've got Boise up there, but I went with a little bit of a dark horse this year.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: I went with Navy and you're like Navy and the playoff, but here's what I like about Navy.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when I talk to Coach Nubar, this is a fourth year at talk to him.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_00]: He had this quiet confidence to him, like some big is going to happen this year.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_00]: He likes both his quarterbacks.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: I lose their quarterback from last year in Blake Horevard.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: uh... but they like practice he likes practicing woodson and jackson good era so he feels comfortable there offensive line that everybody back defensively that loaded uh... with talent uh... that they've been normally like number eighty five of my experience shirt
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: this year, they're number 15 of my experience chart.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_00]: So it's more veteran, Navy team than usual.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_00]: And when you look at their schedule, they do have to play or force on the road, but they've had pretty good success against the Falcons.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: And they do have to play UTSA in San Antonio.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_00]: But when I talked to Coach Trailer, I was asking them why UTSA struggles with Army at home, because he's never loses at home in the Alamo dome, but he's lost twice to Army.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, Phil, San Antonio is a military town half the crowds rooting for
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I took that into account giving Navy a shot at winning at UTSA.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, I was just in San Antonio for a speaking thing for the second.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: And once again, people were telling me, this is military town, this is military town.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_00]: So Navy should have a good following for that game.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_00]: And then the one game though, Nunderdog in is Notre Dame, but if you're 11 and 1, you're the American Conference Champ, and you're only losses to Notre Dame, I think you make the playoff.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_00]: these are separate questions but I want to get back to Nebraska where are they on your experience chart Nebraska and what what's Ohio give me a thumbnail on Nebraska's opening game okay uh the brass guy my experience shirt this year number eight okay so he kind of liked that they were number 39 last year which was one of the reasons I was high and I'm but now they're all the way up at number eight which is uh even more reason the like them uh in that so and also
- 26:24[SPEAKER_00]: They're high on my homegrown chart and what the homegrown chart is this year is if you recruit players as freshmen turn them in the softwares junior seniors I did a study this year because I'm trying to grasp this whole transfer thing and doing a pretty good job
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: And the majority teams that were high in the homegrown chart last year finished with winning records and solid years, teams at the bottom, the ones that were bringing in 40-50 transfers every year.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: They finished with losing records.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I think you're much better if you're not.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_00]: You use the transfer portal, but you don't rely on the transfer portal and Nebraska finishes high there.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: Now with Ohio, they lost their head coach right after the regular season.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: But I tell you what, every time I talk to him, I don't remember the head coaches who the coordinators are, they have this Ohio attitude.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_00]: So John Housers are going to do a good job as a DC, they won their bowl game, did saw there, they got Nick Polis back at quarterback this year.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_00]: Now, he's taken over for a pretty good quarterback, Parker Navarro was a guy that
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: around the ball through to ball he was dangerous big part of their offense but uh... he's he can get the ball down the field a little bit more reads a defense as well he's a juckel coming in a red shirt at last year i think i'll have a good year he's six six two forty three so big guy
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: but he's not parking of our.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is sort of a rebuilt team when you look at the aisle.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: They're number 106 on my experience chart.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: They only have one starter back from last year's offense.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_00]: Four starters back from last year's defense.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: The defense will be good.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_00]: You're looking up front.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_00]: Watch a guy at defense attack on me and my adduques.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_00]: They call him Nemo.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to have a good year this year.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: And the Michael Molnars are star at the line backing core.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: But in that game, I've got Nebraska a three touchdown favorite.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I think the Huskers handle a aisle.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good game to play him game one because they are in a rebuilding mode and if you look in a aisle, I know that talking to their defense coordinator and their head coach last couple of years, they're defense usually starts slow.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_00]: And by the time they get to Mac play, that's when they're playing their best ball.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: So I look for them to start slow.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think Nebraska is a good day offensively.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_04]: OK, Phil, I want to ask you about this is a big topic on the ticket is start time to games.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_04]: And we're here, we're living with the 11am great games and they started 11 o'clock.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_04]: We don't like them.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_04]: We like night games.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_04]: Or we like afternoon games, I coach in the SEC so that 230 SEC game was an epic game every single week.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_04]: Tell us about your thoughts on start times and game times for games that really matter, I guess, what's your thoughts on it?
- 28:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and look at how Ohio State felt about hosting Texas last year.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: They were pretty upset.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_00]: There was a 12 o'clock game, definitely your nighttime games that crowd tends to be louder because they get juiced up during the day.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_00]: And you know what I mean by juiced up, right, guys?
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: And 11 o'clock in the morning when you're going to a game, they're just waking up college kids.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's about time to wake up is on the weekends, is that?
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think you get a much better home field advantage playing the game at night than you do at 11 o'clock in the morning and and that's proven Statistically I can tell you that my home field edge probably goes up a point if you're playing the night game because the crowd's gonna be louder Hey, Phil, you do a good job.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_03]: Hanne cabin games.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_03]: There's a there we're probably talking about the huge game and Lincoln on October 10 in Indiana, Nebraska
- 29:50[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I'm probably both be undefeated.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_03]: How do you, by the way, probably a new game?
- 29:56[SPEAKER_03]: How do you, how do you handicap that game?
- 30:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the good thing is after I put the magazine out each year, I actually go through and go through every single game for the upcoming season.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: And what I do is I take my nine sets of power ratings and see what they say on the game.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: Then I'll look at the matchups between the two teams.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_00]: Then I'll look at the series history between the teams.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: whole you know are you off a buy not off a buy things like that uh... area and you're third road game and four weeks thinks of that all that then i look at the matchups off that's a line versus defense of line and come up with my line on the game so do you want to know the number is yeah do
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: I have Nebraska a 14 point underdog.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think India has loaded both the office and defensive lines.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_00]: And if I have a question about the Nebraska, it might be that defensive line this year.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: Like you said, I don't see any real stars.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: So I do have Indiana favor by two touchdowns.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_04]: That's fair.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_04]: Phil, that's fair.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_04]: Anything that you did you did you get is like an agreement with those seconds.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_04]: Will you get free beer for life?
- 30:58[SPEAKER_04]: I'm sure you see it.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, what are the questions?
- 31:00[SPEAKER_04]: No, when you say you spoke for an event for those seconds, we were all pretty excited.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: yeah I am uh we're working on it so I'm hoping it's uh it was a lot of fun and uh do you be honest with you guys?
- 31:13[SPEAKER_00]: I had never had a docechis beer and so I went there.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm here.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_00]: Good.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_00]: It was like I'm like this is cool I'd like this so yeah it was it was great it was uh it was a really fun event and uh we're working on something uh you know uh so stay thirsty my friend.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_01]: That would fill we will let you go unbelievable stuff.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_01]: This is on much this is time extraordinary You made our whole month.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's only August 3 August 4th.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know how he rattles off those that information What's that?
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_04]: Thirty-say-say-say, guarantee it.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: Go ahead Phil.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of fun talking football with you All right, we're going Phil still guru.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_03]: Wait
- 31:54[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I, I don't know that will ever top that.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_03]: That's my only concern.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_03]: I'm Garth No, no offense anyway.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_04]: We're, let's sign off for the show.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's called the day.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_04]: It's called 34.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_04]: You have to have showmanship and we're done for the day.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_04]: Wow, Phil Krunk crushed it.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_03]: Not hurting my other interviews.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_03]: I thought this interview was as bad as good as I've ever heard him.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_04]: I can understand he was locked in and he can whew!
- 32:17[SPEAKER_04]: Rattle stuff off about Nebraska.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_04]: He's calling it Nebraska Station.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, calling him.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_04]: No, he just rattled off as a San Jose state.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_04]: Ohio.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_04]: Ohio.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_04]: Ohio.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: He's got a Nemo.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_01]: Nemo.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_01]: He knew that.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_01]: Got the nickname for a guy on the Ohio.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, it was of the coast in the coast in China.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's insane.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_04]: Come on.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_04]: That was the greatest amount of money that I've ever heard of.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_04]: Can you imagine doing a like a two-hour deal like it and for like those seckeys?
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, 30 of my friends, but it dropped the end of stuff with state.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: What is what it dropped?
- 32:48[SPEAKER_03]: He did.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_03]: I just thought it was Mesmer.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_03]: He knows so much and when he gives you a line on a game, it's well thought out like he has a system.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_04]: He was I think I think a test down or two, maybe two.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_04]: No, here's the system here.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_04]: Why is this?
