Transcript
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: This episode is for anyone listening who has a day job.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: It's common in the entrepreneurial world to view a day job as the enemy of a writing career.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: You have a boss, you have office hours, and you have job responsibilities that feel a million miles away from the writing you want to do.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Well, if you want to build a full-time writing career or gain more financial freedom, then building your own business is certainly a great goal.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: But while you're still in your day job, it's important not to view it as the enemy.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: There are two reasons for this.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: First of all, if you despise the place where you're spending eight hours a day, that's an awful lot of negativity coming into your life.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And a great place to start is by being grateful for employment that's helping to feed your family and providing some stability for your life.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: But there's another more important reason not to see your day job as the enemy.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And it's this your day job has lots of hidden opportunities to develop your talents and skills as a writer, business owner, and leader.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: For example, here are 10 possibilities.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Number one, develop a company podcast.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Number two, volunteer to make sales calls.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Number three, write marketing content like blog posts or newsletters.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Number four, teach a course on writing to your colleagues.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Number five, volunteer to edit content for other people.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Number six, write social media posts for your company.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Number seven, ghost write articles or letters for the CEO, the president, or your supervisor.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Number eight, film and edit videos.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Number nine, practice your public speaking skills in the next department meeting.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And number ten, compile an annotated list of books that have impacted your colleagues the most and circulate it.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Now maybe your ultimate goal is to develop your own full-time business.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And there's certainly nothing wrong with that.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: But in the meantime, there are golden opportunities staring you right in the face every single day at your day job.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Tony Robbins once said, the only person holding you back is you.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: So the way to start moving forward is not to spend all your time wishing you were somewhere else, but instead by using the opportunities in your current situation to help you become a better marketer, leader, writer, and communicator.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
