Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Tony Randle is the sort of brain needed around the council table
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Tony Randall was exactly the type of person, the sort
- 0:03Speaker 1: of brain that you wanted sitting around a council table.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Is specially given the types who now seem to occupy
- 0:08Speaker 1: many of the seats. It's very sad to hear of
- 0:11Speaker 1: his passing my condolences to his family and those knew
- 0:15Speaker 1: him well. For those who didn't, Tony was a counselor
- 0:18Speaker 1: and Wellington. He sat in the northern Ward. He was
- 0:20Speaker 1: the guy you would call when you wanted to know
- 0:23Speaker 1: the facts of a case, when you wanted to know
- 0:25Speaker 1: the numbers. Tony was the guy who found just a
- 0:28Speaker 1: wee mistake in the council's modeling when they were lowering
- 0:31Speaker 1: speed limits in the Capitol. Remember that not a single
- 0:35Speaker 1: counselor or council officer, staff member, council paid Boffin picked
- 0:41Speaker 1: up on the mistake. It was out by two hundred
- 0:43Speaker 1: and fifty million dollars. Tony did. He consistently complained that
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Council wasn't fully funding Wellington waters projects, meaning the
- 0:52Speaker 1: pipes weren't getting fixed. He was only there since twenty
- 0:55Speaker 1: twenty two. He was analytical and not particularly partisan. Too
- 1:00Speaker 1: often you hear of local and national politicians getting into
- 1:03Speaker 1: office who probably shouldn't be there. They've no particular skills
- 1:07Speaker 1: or background to justify it. They're elected by a margin
- 1:11Speaker 1: of a few hundred or even a few dozen votes
- 1:13Speaker 1: by a public that doesn't really pay close attention to
- 1:16Speaker 1: the details. As a result, you get politicians who also
- 1:21Speaker 1: don't pay attention to the details. Tony Randall did, and
- 1:25Speaker 1: that's what made him special. Voters deserve more analytical thinkers
- 1:29Speaker 1: in local government who are across the facts and the numbers,
- 1:33Speaker 1: rather than ticking a box on their way into Parliament
- 1:36Speaker 1: all the United Nations where you get the sense that
- 1:39Speaker 1: a lot of these guys really wish they could be
